Editor’s View
Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking
Return Of Town Councils Back On The Cards? Voices of protest were doomed to remain unheeded re-establish town councils in every county across Ireland. “Our Bill will create a Commission under the Local Government Act to review the geographical distribution of proposed town councils. This Commission will also examine their powers and how they are financed. The purpose of this is to provide a sound, fair basis to further legislative for the re-establishment of town councils,” said Deputy Brassil. So what would this mean for Kil-
larney? The purpose of the Bill is to empower local communities by enabling towns across Ireland to have a strong voice to fight their corner. Of course, that’s not to say reform wasn’t necessary but the approach to local democracy back in 2014 was very much “throw the baby out with the bathwater” as abolishing town councils has left many urban areas without a voice. Let’s hope any new system will give power back to communities and es-
Safety
Time For A New Pedestrian Crossing At Mission Road? SINCE Killarney House Gardens were opened, flocks of us have been descending on the wonderfully welcome attraction on a regular basis. Killarney’s answer to St Stephen’s Green has surpassed every expectation as waves of people segue from the town centre through the gates at the Mission Road entrance near the statue to Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty. The natural crossing point is at the exit of the Beech Road/New Street car park, so it seems unfair that pedestrians are forced to depend on the goodwill of motorists as they scurry across like the fabled mice at crossroads.
As it happens, the issue was highlighted a the recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District, with Councillor Michael Gleeson calling on Kerry County Council to give an update on the development of such a crossing. Kerry County Council replied that an assessment would be carried out to determine if the location meets the criteria for a pedestrian crossing and if so an application will be submitted to the Transport Infrastructure Ireland. The survey will be undertaken during July 2017.
Drinks Industry Warns Legislation Will Damage Kerry Festivals A CLAMOUR of dissent greeted new measures proposed in the Public Health Alcohol Bill (PHAB) to restrict advertising. The Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI) fears that the Alcohol Bill will endanger the future of Kerry festivals such as Puck Fair, saying it will effectively ban sponsorship. The idea of disgusted festivalgoers thwarted in their plans to enjoy modern-day Bacchanalian revels was the first that sprang to mind but cartoonish concepts aside, there is ground for concern. The measures if implemented will
also undermine Government support for the creative industries and the role of the arts which support economic growth and balanced regional development, according to the drinks industry. The drinks industry provides almost €8.5 million in sponsorship to over 50 arts, sporting and cultural events around the country which is essential to their viability and sustainability. Festival organisers are extremely worried. You see, it’s impossible to avoid the presence of alcohol at festivals, concerts and cultural events. The legislation was first put forward
by Leo Varadkar during his time in the Department of Health, though Marcella Corcoran-Kennedy was rebuffed when she tried to get the legislation through the Oireachtas. Speaking about the impact of the advertising restrictions Patricia Callan, director of ABFI said: “The Listowel Races and Puck Fair are flagship events in the Kerry’s tourism calendar attracting a combined total of 130,000 visitors to the county annually and directly benefiting the local economy to the tune of €20 million.” Surely a common-sense approach can be found?
tablish a fair system. I recently paid a visit to Kerry County Council’s Killarney Municipal District improved facilities for the public and new meeting room at Killarney Town Hall. It brought home to me how the main strength of town councils lies in their accessibility and the personal touch. Local governance nurtures an enhanced sense of pride and ownership and of course allows for targeted use of resources.
Facebook Reaction
ALMOST a century of local government was wiped out in 2014 as a result of the Local Government Reform Act. But like Cassandra, the famous prophetess of Classical mythology, the voices of protest were doomed to remain unheeded as time ran out for the 80 town councils across the country, including those in Killarney, Tralee and Listowel. The silent assassination was all the more bizarre considering the uproar that can ensue when a rural community is threatened with losing a post office or a garda station. This week it was revealed that a new Bill could give power back to local communities. The return of Killarney and Tralee Town Councils, and potentially Listowel, will be on the cards if the Dáil votes to support a new Bill. Kerry Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil made the prediction as Fianna Fáil put forward The Local Government (Establishment of Town Councils Commission) Bill 2017 which aims to
Local Reaction To Our Online Story “Two chances – nil and none. Every house in Killarney should hang a sign on their gate for the next elections to let those responsible know. Who got rid of town councils. FF said that they were about to do it. FG and Labour did it. Sad to see 14 million going out of Killarney every year. Never to return. We see all other towns in Kerry improving at our cost. Disgrace.” “The town council in Killarney should never have been disbanded.” “Hope it happens. Killarney needs its council back.” “It’s a great chance to get a new young fresh council.”
Meitheal Magic IT WAS a case of from the drought to the deluge for Killarney’s Tidy Towns volunteers on Monday. Despite the dismal weather conditions, there was a good turnout for a hugely successful meitheal. Team Killarney pulled out all the stops to ensure the town looks its best for the bumper weekend in Killarney. All are welcome to a major clean-up on Monday morning at 7am, meeting at Lidl car park.

Remembering Annette A MINUTE’S silence will be observed at the start of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle at 7am tomorrow. The 9,000 participants will pause and remember their comrades who have lost their lives on Irish roads this year. This year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is dedicated to the memory of Killarney native Annette Mannix. The 48-year-old, who was one of 11 cyclists to lose their lives on Irish roads in 2017, had planned on undertaking the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle for the first time this year, in aid of the Kerry branch of Down Syndrome Ireland. Annette was a member of Killarney Cycling Club died tragically in an accident on the Killarney Bypass just a few short weeks after purchasing a new bicycle to take part in the event.
Strength In Numbers Now in its 34th year, Ireland’s biggest one-day fundraiser is run by 2,000 volunteers, who will help over 9,000 cyclists fuel up on over 24,000 sandwiches, 20,000 litres of water, and over 36,000 bananas. Some 30,000 teabags and 1,000 litres of milk are needed for the essential cuppa as participants cover the 180km/112-mile route. It’s raised €11.9 million to date and tomorrow’s event will benefit 10 charities.
Five Kilcummin Brothers Saddle Up For Cycle POISED to pedal their way around the iconic Ring of Kerry tomorrow are five Kilcummin brothers, Robert, Morgan, Ivor, Micheal and Martin. The five are gearing up for their second year participating in the event. All five did intense training, covering
WHILE the weather may be “in the lap of the gods”, to quote Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle PRO Cathal Walshe, organisers hope the 34th annual event will be a safe and enjoyable one. And there will be many famous faces among the 9,000 big-hearted lords and ladies of the Ring who will come under starter’s orders at 7am tomorrow in Killarney. Former Taoiseach Enda Kenny and his son Ferdia will be saddling up for the event, both having completed it several times over the years. Indeed, in 2013 Enda was accompanied on the route by Leo Varadkar, who would go on to succeed him as Taoiseach this year. Another seasoned cyclist embarking on the event is Kerry native and RTÉ’s southern editor Paschal Sheehy. World Champion and Olympic athlete Sonia O’Sullivan and former Galway GAA dual star and philanthropist Alan Kerins will both use pedal power to generate funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital. Former chief superintendent of Kerry Gardai Pat Sullivan and his wife Maura are also poised to complete the 180km route. “The main message is safety. We want everyone to enjoy the day and come home safely; it’s not about speed,” Cathal Walshe told Killarney Advertiser. The fun will begin this afternoon from 2pm to 10pm with registration at Beech Road. There will also be an exciting expo area in association with O’Sullivan Cycles. Meanwhile, Beech Road will be the place to be tomorrow throughout the day where you can cheer and support the cyclists as they cross the finish line and receive their medals.
over 100km a week in preparation for the gruelling course. “We look forward to it and this cycle is a great way of making a difference as it does so much for Kerry charities,” said Robert who said the five brothers would cycle together for most of the route.

Munster Final
Bumper Weekend Is ‘A Godsend’
Summer Celebration For Aisling & Maire
PALS Aisling Doyle and Maire Murphy took time out to enjoy an ice cream to celebrate Aisling generating over a thousand euro for Down Syndrome Ireland. Aisling, who describes Maire as her inspiration, raised an amazing €1103.72 for the charity. The daughter of Mary T and Derry Doyle, from Ross Road, Aisling organised three ice cream parties as part of the HB Ice-Cream Funday campaign in aid of the charity. The 16-year-old held events at her own school, St Brigid’s Secondary School, Killarney, as well as at St Brendan’s College, Killarney, and organised fundraisers with the Killarney Girl Guides and Brownies. She was helped by her friend Mairead O’Connor.

IT LOOKS like Killarney is about to experience the biggest weekend of the year. Some 9,000 cyclists and their family and friends are converging on the town for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle tomorrow, while thousands of Kerry and Cork football fans will be beating a path to Fitzgerald Stadium for the Munster Football Final clash on Sunday. The keynote GAA fixture alone is estimated to be worth at least €10 million to the town. Between the Munster final, the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and the July 4 celebrations on Tuesday, it’s forecast that close to 100,000 people will arrive in Killarney, with tills ringing out in local hospitality and retail sectors as a result. In addition, the Munster clash is seen as a prime opportunity to impress the IRFU as Ireland awaits
a decision on its bid to host the Rugby World Cup. Fitzgerald Stadium is included in the Irish bid as a venue. “It’s a godsend as we weren’t supposed to have the Munster final originally,” Conor Hennigan, business development manager with the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce told the Killarney Advertiser. Mr Hennigan, who is also a member of the Fitzgerald Stadium committee, added: “These events are a very very welcome boost.” Killarney Chamber seized the opportunity as soon as Killarney was named as the venue for the Munster final and immediately invited IRFU bosses to Killarney to showcase how well the town copes with such big occasions. “These events being great atmosphere, colour and banter and zero trouble,” added Mr Hennigan.
A Promise Kept
BACK in 1993, Jeremy Russell of Concord in North Carolina performed in the St Patrick’s Day parade in Killarney with the Concord School marching band. The town made such an impression on him that Jeremy said if he ever got married, he would return to Killarney on his honeymoon. True to his resolve, he arrived during the week with his wife Susan. Concord was one of Killarney’s first twinned cities in the United States and among the first delegation to visit were Sean O’Grady, Murt O’Shea and Dermot O’Callaghan. “Unfortunately Murt and Dermot are no longer around but Sean O’Grady and I were delighted to welcome Jeremy and Susan on Saturday,” said Sean Counihan, chairman of the Killarney Town Twinning Association. “Killarney has gained two new ambassadors!”

IN SEPTEMBER, Killarney Advertiser highlighted how members of the Kerry branch of the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association were concerned that Deer Lodge was lying idle. Well, this week it emerged that residents will move into the brand-new €13 million facility, on St Margaret’s Road, on July 11. “Above all, opening Deer Lodge will be a tremendous move for the people currently living in the out-dated and entirely unsuitable O’Connor Unit,” according to the HSE. The opening of Deer Lodge will mean that there will be an overall increase of eight beds in Mental Health Services in Kerry, and there will be a corresponding increase in staff number of 28.5. In terms of the ratio of staff to residents, there will be a total of 65.46 WTE (whole time equivalents) for 40 residents. An additional €1.15 million has been allocated for staffing to ensure the safe transfer of residents. The Labour Court issued a binding recommendation last month in relation to the opening of this important and much-needed facility. The issue was referred to the Labour Court after agreement was not reached at
the WRC. Following a hearing last month (May), a binding ruling was issued by the Labour Court. The court found that “the most efficient way forward is for the staff to move to the new facility with immediate effect under the terms of the WRC proposal of April 18”. The Kerry Branch of the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association members agreed to cooperate with the transfer of services from the O’Connor Unit to Deer Lodge on July 11. But members continued to express grave concern in relation to the lack of nurses being assigned to Deer Lodge. “Thirty nursing staff will transfer back to Kerry Mental Health Services, but regrettably not a single staff member or resource from Cluain Fhionnain will transfer to a community setting or new service initiative in line with a Vision for Change,” said Cormac Williams of the Kerry branch of the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association. He added: “The PNA believes the management of Kerry Mental Health Service have once again missed a golden opportunity to do something, positive, constructive and worthwhile for both the services and staff of Kerry mental health services with the transfer of Cluain Fhionnain to a private care provider.”

Kerry Airport To Boost Its Security & Safety KERRY TD and Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, that he is allocating over three quarters of a million euro in Exchequer grants under his Department’s Regional Airports Programme to the Kerry Airport. This represents the first allocation of support in this year regional airport programme and the grants will go towards safety and security-related projects at the airports that have been approved to date by the Minister. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin TD said the grant “shows a firm commitment of the Government to continuing financial support for safety and security measures at the airport”.
“The National Aviation Policy 2015 acknowledges the role played by the regional airports in promoting a level of international connectivity to support the tourism and business sectors in their regions, and Kerry Airport continues to provide vital links in the region,” said Minister Griffin.

Kerry Mayor Opens
“With this grant Kerry Airport will be able to move forward with a number of safety and security features such as provision of Stop-bar and Additional Taxi-way Signage, and Taxiway Alpha.” Deputy Michael Healy-Rae also welcomed the funding of €769,000 for Kerry Airport. “This is a very welcome
increase from the €310,000 that was received in 2016,” said Deputy HealyRae. “I was very glad that when Minister Ross was in Kerry recently that he visited Kerry Airport, the airport is of paramount importance to the county and it is vital that these much needed funds are allocated to ensure that our airport can continue improving, raising standards in safety and all other aspects of the airport.” The Kerry TD added: “I was assured by the Minister when he was in Kerry after visiting the airport that the PSO would not be in danger this year, but, I also raised with him the possibility of an International PSO with an airport such as Amsterdam to increase worldwide connectivity for Kerry which would obviously open the doors for more business in towns like Tralee, Listowel, Killarney and Castleisland.”

Frankfurt Festival THE Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael O’Shea, joined the Mayor of Frankfurt Burgermeister, Peter Feldmann, in Frankfurt at the weekend to officially open the Frankfurt-Hoechst Castle Festival. The visit coincided with the selection of County Kerry as the international festival partner for 2017. The festival, now in its 61st year, is one of Frankfurt’s largest annual cultural events and runs for almost three weeks. There is a Kerry connection with the festival stretching back to 2009 when the first link was made between Hoechst and Tralee. In subsequent years the German Rose Selection has formed part of the festival programme and the two Mayors were on stage for the announcement of this year’s German Rose who is Áine Sullivan, from Dusseldorf, whose parents come from Dublin and Cork. The festival is a great opportunity to promote Kerry Tourism and Kerry Airport in Germany, according to Kerry County Council Tourism Officer, John Griffin: “There is a Kerry Tourism promotional tent located at the festival venue, staffed by Kerry tourism groups and German volunteers, on
each of the three weekends. Kerry dancers and musicians performed at the opening ceremony on June 24 and will return again on the final weekend, July 7 to 10,” said Mr Griffin. “Germany is Ireland’s largest continental source market with 620,000 visiting in 2016 and Kerry is their most popular regional destination. In the first four months of 2017, the number of German visitors to Ireland grew by a further 4% according to Tourism Ireland.” Kerry County Council and Destination Kerry, supported by Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland, are focussing on further increases in this regard. Already this year the various bodies including the Council have participated at the CMT Travel Fair in Stuttgart and ITB in Berlin. Ryanair, in addition to its long running Frankfurt-Hahn to Kerry service, will operate new direct flights from Berlin to Kerry Airport from November, and the new Lufthansa Frankfurt-Shannon service will also increase the number of German visitors travelling to Kerry. Kerry: 565 Young People Unemployed For Six Months Or More THE National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) has highlighted concerns at the number of young people across county Kerry who are unemployed for six months or more. New data from the Department of Social Protection show that the number of young people under 26 in Kerry in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance or Benefit for six months or more is 565. The NYCI, whose members work with over 380,000 young people nationwide, expressed concern at the figures. James Doorley, NYCI deputy director, said: “We are concerned at the number of young people who are unemployed in Kerry, particularly those unemployed for six months or more. This disappointing figure is mirrored at the national level, where we have over 11,711 young people long-term unemployed. “The EU Youth Guarantee Programme guarantees a work, education or training opportunity to any young person unemployed for four months or more. In 2013, the Government committed
to the implementation of the Youth Guarantee in Ireland. Yet four years on, despite the improving economy and labour market, we still have too many young people out of work,” explained Mr Doorley. The NYCI is calling on Government to develop an action plan under this scheme in order to reduce the number of young longterm unemployed to 5,000 – more than halving longterm youth unemployment by the end of 2018. Mr Doorley added: “We recommend an additional investment of €47.4m in Budget 2018 to reduce the number of young people long term unemployed by the end of 2018. This is the gross cost, as this investment would lead to reduced social welfare payments as more young people move into employment – saving €33.4m per annum. While the net financial cost would be €15m, the social, economic and community benefit of having over 6,000 more young people in gainful employment is incalculable.

At our Studio we use Depileve wax, which is the number-one wax in hair removal. Depileve includes hair inhibitors to reduce the rate of regrowth and is a hygienic, professional hair-removal system perfect for the face and body. As you prepare for your waxing appointment there are a couple of little tips we can offer. Let it grow. Patience is a virtue – give it at least a week and a half without shaving before coming in for your waxing app. On the day of your appointment, hop into the shower and exfoliate really well. This will help to loosen dead skin and lift trapped hairs. After waxing we have a couple of products to help soothe the skin. Our post-depilatory gel cools and moisturises the skin. It helps to close the pore dilated by heat. At Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio we cater for every man and woman’s needs when it comes to waxing. For more information or booking call 064-66 32966.

Two Mile Community National School Enrolment KERRY Education and Training Board invites parents to an information evening on Thursday, July 6, in the Two Mile School, Killarney, from 7pm to 9pm. The open evening will commence at 7pm with an information session on the Community National School (CNS) model and the role of the Education and Training Board (ETB). Parents will have a tour of the school, enjoy a cup of tea and meet with other interested families. A sample of the new uniform will also be on display. Any parents interested in registering their child will also be facilitated on the night. The local Two Mile Community Group, who together with Kerry ETB are organising the information evening, wish to warmly invite all interested parents for this school year or future school years. “We have worked tirelessly for the last year trying to find a way to make this happen and thanks to Kerry ETB and the Diocese of Kerry we are now in a position to open our doors again and hear the sound of children in our school in September,” said Lisa Casey of the Local Two Mile Community Group. Kerry ETB is a locally based State agency and is al-
ready the patron of eight post-primary schools and one post-Leaving Certificate college. The Two Mile Community National School will be the first primary school of its kind in Kerry. In the Community National School model the ETB is the employer of all the staff as well as the corporate body with overall responsibility for governance. The school will have a board of management with responsibility for overall strategic planning and policy development. Kerry ETB’s head office is in Tralee and the ETB is available to support and guide the school in a similar way to the support it provides for its post-primary school Killarney Community College. Another distinguishing feature of the CNS model is its multidenominational ethos. “The school will cater for children of all faiths and beliefs equally,” said Ann O’Dwyer, director of schools, Kerry ETB.” The school is accepting enrolments from junior infants to sixth class; contact Kerry ETB directly on 066-7121488 or 086-4183558 or by emailing cns@ kerryetb.ie For further information on the CNS model, visit www.cns.ie

CAO
College Applicants Have Until Saturday To Change Their CAO Course Choices Career guidance counsellor Billy Ryle explains the CAO ‘Change of Mind’ facility
THE State exams are done so the thoughts of relieved candidates are turning to holidays, summer jobs and travel. But before heading away the 80,000-plus applicants to the Central Applications Office (CAO) must focus on the CAO “Change of Mind” facility. CAO gives each applicant an opportunity, if s/he wishes, to register a change of course choices online by 5.15pm on Saturday, July 1. Many applicants are happy with their original course choices submitted to CAO by 1st February but others might have done further course research or simply changed their minds about the courses they would like to study. Whatever your reason for submitting a change of mind form, now is the time to do so. After July 1 you can make no further changes to your CAO application form. If you decide to submit a change of mind form, work on your choices before going online. Don’t tinker with your original list while online as it’s very easy to make a mistake. Start from scratch and prepare a new list of courses. Check the minimum course requirements and the special requirements for each course you are including on the change of mind form. Do not list any course which has been cancelled, but you may include any new courses which were announced after the 2017 CAO Handbook was published. All of this information is easily accessible on the CAO website, www.cao.ie. When you have finalised your choices, open up your CAO account via the “My Application” facility. Click on “Add Level 8 Course Choices” and/or “Add Level 7/6 Course Choices.” Then use the “New Courses” list to enter your new course choices. Remember that every choice is important and it’s advisable to fill up all ten choices in each category. The two course categories – Level 8 (Honours Bachelor Degrees) and Level 7/6 (Ordinary Bachelor Degrees/Higher Certificates) are totally separate from each other for the purpose of submitting a change of mind form. You may change one category and leave the second category unchanged or you may change both. On the other hand, you may decide to stick with the choices you submitted by 1st February last. Check that your courses have been updated by using the “My Application” facility by 5.15pm on 1st July. You may change your course choices free of charge as often as you wish up to the closing date. The final change of mind form that you submit is the one that will count for your CAO offers in August, so be very careful to check online before 1st July to make sure that all is in order. The Leaving Certificate Examination results will be delivered to schools on Wednesday, August 16. The results will also be available via Internet at www.examinations.ie from 12 noon on that day. Round One offers of college places will be available on the CAO website, www.cao.ie from 6am on Monday, August 21. The reply date for acceptance will be 5.15pm on Monday, August 28. Checklist • You have until 5.15pm on July 1 to avail of the CAO “Change of Mind” facility • Not all applications to CAO avail of the change of mind facility • Don’t list any courses which you haven’t researched. • Don’t apply for any course which you know that you won’t accept • Never apply for a course in which you haven’t the slightest interest • Work on your new list of course choices before going online • Check the requirements for the courses you are including on the change of mind form • The two course categories are separate from each other on a change of mind form • The remaining days provide you with a valuable window of opportunity • After the 1st July you can make no further changes to your CAO application form • SUSI online student grant application system for 2017/2018 is now open at www.grantsonline.ie, www.studentfinance.ie or www.susi.ie • The closing date for the prioritising of new SUSI grant applications is July 13 • Leaving Cert exam results will available on Wed., 16th August • Round One offers of college places will be available on Monday, August 21 • Junior Cert exam results will be available in mid-September

Brad Pitt Is Not Dating Sienna Miller or Elle Macpherson Ryan Reynolds jumps into action while flying into a kid’s birthday party for a scene in the upcoming movie Deadpool 2 in Vancouver, Canada. Ryan was spotted on set earlier in the day in his street clothes and his costume explains why only his hands had Wade Wilson’s makeup on them. That’s the only place he showed skin, except for the moment when his shirt flew up a bit and flashed his abs!
Rumors have been swirling that Brad Pitt has been linked to Sienna Miller and model Elle Macpherson, but none of the reports are true. Brad was at the Glastonbury Festival over the weekend to introduce a screening of the Netflix movie Okja, which he produced. Sienna was at the festival as well and they hung out in a group that included their mutual friend Bradley Cooper, among others. “They were all hanging out as friends,” a source told Us Weekly. “There’s nothing going on there.”

Facebook In Talks To Produce Original TV-Quality Shows Facebook is in talks with Hollywood studios about producing scripted, TV-quality shows, with an aim of launching original programming by late summer, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. The social networking giant has indicated that it was willing to commit to production budgets as high as $3 million per episode, in meetings with Hollywood talent agencies, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The company is expected to release episodes in a traditional manner, instead of dropping an entire season in one go like Netflix Inc and Amazon.com Inc, WSJ reported.
Fans all over the world are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first Harry Potter book this week, and for good reason. It’s hard for many to believe that Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone first came out in the U.K. on June 26, 1997. (It was released the following year in America under the new title, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, for those not in the know.) J.K. Rowling has an emotional message for harry potter fans on its 20th anniversary. Thanking followers for their “wonderful” support throughout her – and Harry’s – journey, Jo tweeted: “20 years ago today a world that I had lived in alone was suddenly open to others. Rowling isn’t the only person celebrating 20 years of the wizarding world – Twitter has also waved its magic technological wand for the occasion and created a very special emoji.

Responding to J.K Rowling’s tweet in predictable fashion, Morgan replied: “20 years of conning the masses with execrable literary hogwartwash. Congrats.” He wrote: “No idea what this means..but Google informs me Slytherins are ‘cunning, shrewd, ambitious & strong leaders striving to be their best.”

Transfer Of Services To Deer Lodge AT A branch meeting of the Kerry Branch of the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association on Tuesday, June 13, members agreed to cooperate with the transfer of services from the O’Connor Unit, to Deer Lodge on July 11, 2017. Members continued to express grave concern in relation to the lack of nurses being assigned to Deer Lodge and believe that this will cause a health and safety issue going forward for both staff and residents. Under the terms of the Labour Court Recommendation there will be a review of staffing in Deer Lodge after six months. The PNA has already expressed our concern on staffing to both the Mental Health Commission and Minister with Responsibility for Mental Health, Ms Helen McEntee, TD. Mental health nurses commenced the withdrawal from Cluain Fhionnain, Ballydribeen, Killarney, a 30-bed intellectual disability service in Ballydribeen, Killarney, on Monday, June 12. Cluain Fhionnain was opened in 2001 when 30 residents from St Finan’s Hospital transferred to the facility in Ballydribeen. Over the past 12 months 11 transferred out to houses in the community of other care homes and 3 more will transfer out to a house in the community in the coming weeks. Fifteen residents will remain on in

Cluain Fhionnain under the care of a private care provider name Home Instead. It is envisaged that the remaining residents will transfer out to houses in the community over the next 12 to 18 months. Thirty nursing staff will transfer back to Kerry Mental Health Services, but regrettably not a single staff member or resource from Cluain Fhionnain will transfer to a community setting or new service initiative in line with a Vision for Change. The HSE policy of closure, retreat and retrenchment within Kerry mental health service continues unabated, and services developments like 24/7 Suicide Prevention, 24/7 Crisis Intervention, Respite Care, Out-
reach remain a distant aspiration rather than a tangible reality within Kerry mental health service. Nurses from Cluain Fhionnain will be reassigned to fill existing vacancies in other parts of the county and reduce overtime costs. The PNA believes the management of Kerry mental health service have once again missed a golden opportunity to do something, positive, constructive and worthwhile for both the services and staff of Kerry mental health services with the transfer of Cluain Fhionnain to a private care provider. Cormac Williams, Kerry Branch, Psychiatric Nurses’ Association, Killarney

Presidential Salute For RTÉ’s Washington Correspondent RTÉ’S Washington Correspondent Caitríona Perry did her bit for the special relationship in the Oval Office on Tuesday when US President Donald Trump introduced her to new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. Caitríona was in the White House to report on the President’s phone call to congratulate Mr Varadkar on his new position, when the US leader beckoned her over and asked her to say hello to the Irish leader. “We have a lot of your Irish press watching us right now,” President Trump told Mr Varadkar, before turning to Caitríona and saying, “We have all of this Irish beautiful Irish press here. Where are you from? Come here, come here . . . “She has a nice smile on her face so I bet she treats you well,” the
President told the Taoiseach on the phone in a packed Oval Office as Caitríona, who was shooting the scene on her phone, made her exit. “He thanks you for the newspapers, Caitríona,” President Trump added. After her encounter with the US Commander in Chief, Caitríona told RTÉ Entertainment: “One minute we were outside the window and the next minute I’m meeting the President of the United States. “Usually we would shoot from outside the window of the White House and that’s what we were expecting today but instead we were invited inside to witness the President’s call to the Taoiseach. When we went in he was already on the phone but I must have caught his eye and he called me over.”
Bruton To Stop Catholic Schools Admissions On Basis Of Religion CATHOLIC primary schools will no longer be able to discriminate in favour of pupils on the basis of religion under plans announced by Minister for Education Richard Bruton. He told an Oireachtas committee on Wednesday evening that he plans to remove the “baptism barrier” in admission to Catholic schools. However, minority faiths – such
as the Church of Ireland – will be able to continue to select students on the basis of religion in cases where they are over-subscribed in order to protect their ethos. At present, over-subscribed publicly-funded schools can prioritise children of their own religion ahead of other children who live closer to the school. This has become highly con-
tentious, given that more than 90 per cent of primary schools remain under the patronage of the Catholic Church or other religious organisations. Mr Bruton set out that his preference was to remove the capacity for State-funded religious primary schools to use religion as a criteria in the admissions process in cases where they were oversubscribed.
Paddington Bear Creator Michael Bond Dies MICHAEL BOND, the creator of beloved children’s character Paddington Bear, has died at the age of 91. He died at his home on Tuesday following a short illness, a statement from his publisher Harper Collins said. Bond published his first book, A Bear Called Paddington, in 1958. The character, a marmalade-loving bear from “deepest, darkest Peru” who comes to live in London, went on to inspire a series of books, an ani-
mated TV series and a successful film. As well as Paddington, he also created characters including Olga da Polga, A Mouse Called Thursday and a French detective named Monsieur Pamplemousse. A sequel to the Paddington film will be released later this year. “So sorry to hear that Michael Bond has departed,” Stephen Fry wrote on Twitter. “He was as kindly, dignified, charming and lovable as the immortal Paddington Bear he gave us.”
‘We Just Want Time To Complete The Paper’ THE OIREACHTAS PETITIONS Committee has requested that the State Examinations Commission (SEC) appear before it, after a Junior Certificate student’s petition to make the English exam
30 minutes longer was warmly received by committee members. The petition first came before the committee in April, with chairman Seán Sherlock saying at the time that it had received considerable
attention. The petition, created by Tara O’Sullivan, has over 12,000 signatures. Her case is that changes to the structure of the exam made it harder to prepare for, more difficult to answer and almost impossible to do so in the two hours given.
Writing in TheJournal.ie, Tara said: “Before this year, the English Junior Cert exam was two two-and-a-half hour-long papers. These papers had a clear structure that students could prepare for. “When I understood that we were to do the English paper in two hours I was shocked.”

In The News Today Trump ‘Bleeding Facelift’ Tweet Criticised SENIOR US Republicans have joined condemnation of President Donald Trump over an attack he made on Twitter against a prominent female journalist. Mr Trump called Mika Brzezinski “low IQ crazy Mika”, in response to disparaging re-
marks about him on an MSNBC show. He also referred to her “bleeding badly from a facelift” and assailed her co-presenter Joe Scarborough. Senator Lindsey Graham said Mr Trump’s remarks were “beneath the office” of president.

Elderly Couple To Be Reunited THEIR pleas touched the nation when an elderly couple spoke on radio this week about their heartbreak at their separation. Now the Health Service Executive has said “arrangements are being made” to facilitate the transfer of a woman to her husband’s nursing home, after the couple were separated under the Fair Deal Scheme. In a statement, the HSE said her transfer would be made as soon as possible. It said it is liaising directly with the family in this regard. Michael Devereux, 89, and Kathleen, 85, applied as a couple for the Fair Deal Scheme. Mr Devereux was accepted, but his wife’s application was rejected. Speaking on RTÉ’s Liveline, he said that he struggles to sleep away from his partner. He said that it is the first time they have been separated after 63 years of marriage. The HSE said its “Social Care Division became aware of the
circumstances of the Devereux family through radio coverage on RTÉ 1. “Following this, the National Director for Social Care immediately initiated a review of Mrs Devereux’s care needs and the totality of her circumstances. “This review has commenced and will be undertaken as quickly as possible in the coming days. The review will take account of an updated clinical assessment as well as the provisions of the Nursing Home Support Scheme (NHSS). “In the meantime, arrangements are being made through the HSE’s transitional care service to facilitate Mrs Devereux’s transfer to her husband’s nursing home as soon as possible.” A spokeperson for Minister for Health Simon Harris said: “Minister Harris is pleased that this situation has now been addressed by the HSE with compassion and recognition for the family’s circumstances and looks forward to seeing Michael and Kathleen reunited.”
Anger At Fake Story About Baby A STORY about a miracle baby being rescued from the 16th floor of Grenfell Tower has angered social media users who shared it before finding out it was fake. Using a BBC “breaking news” image, a link to the story then sent people to a website bearing a “Metro” logo. Neither organisation had anything to do with the story. The author claimed that both London’s Metropolitan Police and Mayor Sadiq Khan had confirmed
the baby’s survival. But on social media, some users bought into the heartwarming story. When it appeared that the story was fake, social media users were furious at the trolls, who used the Grenfell disaster, in which 79 people died, to spread misinformation. Kerry Darbyshire tweeted: “What kinda sicko spreads a fake story about baby surviving Grenfell fire after 12 days. Despicable animals.”
KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL paid out over €1 million to elected members last year. The total figure includes allowances, expenses, attendances at conferences and
training seminars, as well as gratuities and ex-gratia payments to former councillors. The details are contained in the council’s annual report.
Killarney Has The Wow Factor This Weekend THE holiday feel in Killarney was enhanced this morning thanks to colourful new banners erected above the streets. The summertime banners, which have been put in place on all streets by the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, feature images of popular local visitor attractions. “We want the visitor to turn the
street corner and say ‘wow I’ve arrived in Killarney’,” said Killarney Chamber President Paul O’Neill.

Tech Anniversaries World’s First ATM Turns To Gold
FIVE decades since it heralded a transformation in the way people obtained cash, the world’s first ATM was turned into gold for celebrations of its 50th anniversary. The brainchild of Scottish inventor Shepherd-Barron, the first ATM (automated teller machine) was opened on June 27, 1967, at a branch of Barclays bank in Enfield, north London, the first of six cash dispensers commissioned by the bank.
IPhone’s 10th Birthday
TEN years ago yesterday Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone, taking the world of mobile phones to a completely different place. Nokia still ruled the roost and BlackBerry was busy pumping out keyboard-toting phones for business types. Tour De France Countdown Begins With Failed Drug Test
TREK-SEGAFREDO’S Portuguese rider Andre Cardoso tested positive for banned drug EPO just days before the start of the Tour de France. The International Cycling Union said the rider returned an adverse analytical finding
from an out-of-competition test conducted on June 18. The 32-year-old had been selected in the Trek-Segafredo’s nine-man squad for the Tour - which starts in Dusseldorf on Saturday - as a support rider for Alberto Contador, but has now been provisionally suspended. Erythropoietin, commonly known as EPO, is a drug that boosts production of red blood cells and in turns speeds the delivery of oxygen to muscles. Trek-Segafredo subsequently announced that veteran Spanish rider Haimar Zubeldia would take Cardoso’s place in the Tour squad.

HE excitement of Killarney Regatta spilled over from Sunday to Tuesday night as in what was a first in its history, a photo-finish race was scrutinised on the big screen before a live audience to determine the outcome. In dramatic fashion, the Muckross and Fossa crews crossed the finish line neck and neck, so the judging decision was postponed until the regatta dance, two days later, when a cheering audience relived the excitement as they gazed at replay on a big screen at the Killarney Oaks Hotel. “It was absolutely impossible to call on the day, there was such a photo finish,” regatta PRO John Kelly told Killarney Advertiser. In the event, it was Muckross that were declared the winners on Tuesday night. The weather conditions couldn’t have been better as packed attendance gathered for the 232nd annual Killarney Regatta at Mahony’s Point on Sunday. The Muckross and Flesk Valley rowing clubs enjoyed significant wins, while Workmen, Fossa, St Brendan’s and Commercial also enjoyed triumphs in various races. For Commercials their win in the novice sixes was their first taste of success since 1980. The best race of the day was the senior fours with both Muckross and Fossa and the finish was so close that the judging panel are awaiting their decision until the race is replayed on camera at the finishing line. “A special word of thanks is extended to the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club for the excellent facilities to the many firms who provided generous sponsorship and to the members of the Civil Defence who were present all during the day,” said Mr Kelly. Siobhan Burns, Workmen’s RC, was the winner of the Regatta Queen contest.

The Bookworm
Reviewed: The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney I DON’T KNOW why but I certainly didn’t expect this book to be what it is – a funny, feelgood yarn of family fortunes. It is set in New York and centres on siblings squabbling over their inheritance. In short, I could not put it down. The Nest is Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s debut novel and its protagonists, the Plumb family, are waiting for the eponymous nest of their inheritance, to be delivered when Melody, the youngest, turns
40. However, the irresponsible freewheeling eldest son, Leo, sets the scene for what’s to come in a wildly cinematic prologue. Amped up on alcohol and drugs, he abandons his wife at a society wedding to seduce a young caterer and aspiring singer. As he speeds off in his car with the teenager, he crashes. The fallout is calamitous and expensive. The ending is as movie-worthy as the beginning. Highly recommended.
Netflix - The Young Offenders
2016 was a great year for Irish movies with the likes of Sing Street and Room receiving praise worldwide. Another movie which won over audiences was the comedy The Young Offenders. If you didn’t get to see it when it was in the cinema then you’ll be delighted to hear that it’s now available on Netflix. Inspired by Ireland’s biggest cocaine seizure of €440 million off the coast of Cork in 2007, The Young Offenders follows
two Cork inner-city teenagers, Conor and Jock, as they embark on a 160km road trip on stolen bikes in the hopes of finding an unrecovered bale of coke. Unfortunately for them, their dreams of becoming millionaires are dashed when they come across some problems along the way, including a Garda and a drug dealer hot on their tails. All in all The Young Offenders is an absolute triumph and well worth a watch!

30.06.17 Graduation Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on the importance of dreaming
‘We Should Never Stop Believing In The Magic Of Life’ I WAS recently at home with my parents in Fossa for a visit and I left there feeling totally inspired! It was a combination of things that led me to feel this way. I decided to go for a stroll around the garden to see what my dad had done with it as I hadn’t taken the time to look around it in years. My father’s garden is a work of art in itself. Not only did I enjoy the beautiful plants and flowers, I also felt so connected to my own roots. I can’t describe how I felt but I didn’t feel like I was remembering what it was like to be a child, I actually felt like I was one again. I thought my neighbour Christina would run up to me any minute and we would go climbing trees or we might continue upgrading my secret home that we had put together behind the shed! I also felt in my heart that sense of wonder and excitement for life. That feeling that the world was my
oyster and all my dreams would come true. We often associate dreaming with children but I think this is one of the biggest mistakes we can make as adults. Why should we stop believing in the magic of life just because we have more responsibilities now? Surely that is even more of a reason to dream and hope and plan for great things. My parents have always supported my dreams, even during the times when my hopes have been dashed. I firmly believe that I will always be a dreamer and I hope that one day my children will come home to a place where they can reconnect with their own dreams. Home is where the heart is and the heart is where your dreams live. • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

Quality Choice,
S
UPERBLY appointed living accommodation is on offer at Number 3 Castlelough Avenue on Loreto Road. Launched to the market by DNG Ted Healy, it has already attracted brisk interest – and small wonder, given the quality on offer both inside and out. This detached property, built in 2002, has been fully refurbished and extended in recent years and now comprises 150 square metres of chic and comfortable living accommodation. The ground floor comprises an entrance hallway with a home office/study off it. The sitting room, finished in walnut flooring, connects to the large kitchen/dining area via a set of double doors. The sitting room comes with a large bay window and cast-iron fireplace with Stanley insert stove. The kitchen/dining room is finished with a tiled floor and boasts built-in display units. The fitted kitchen, which is hand painted, comes with integrated double oven, gas hob, extractor, fridge/ freezer and is completed with a large centre island with build-in kitchen presses. The kitchen opens out onto the new extension: a large family living space with double doors to the rear garden. The remaining groundfloor accommodation comprises a galley style utility room with fitted units and a fully tiled shower room. The first floor comprises of four bedrooms complete with fitted wardrobes. The master bedroom has en suite facilities. Externally the property has been maintained to an exceptionally high standard. The rear garden area has been landscaped with patio and raised planter beds. There is also the detached shed/garage. The property has a zoned oil central heating system with underfloor heat to the new extension and radiators elsewhere. Strong interest is expected by sole selling agent Ted Healy who has recently successfully negotiated the sales of three properties in the adjoining Rossdara development. “Demand in this area is strong at present. The fact this is a detached property is attracting a lot of interest,” said Ted. •
The property was launched to the market for €325,000.

IDS grow up so fast – in the blink of an eye they go from watching cartoons to making their own to upload to YouTube! Changing up your little boy’s room to a teenage dream can be a difficult time. Saying goodbye to all the toys you so lovingly bought can be a big change for you if not your tween. Here are some tips to help the transition. Keep it simple, especially if your space is tight modern furniture with clean lines gives a sense of space. A desk is a good idea especially if they use the room to study. If you have the space, a chair for reading (or
throwing clothes on!) is a must or go for a beanbag – great for chilling out. Hal Lou has an amazing Elephant Beanbag, which has a mattress inside and doubles up as a bed; great if they have friends over. Chose a neutral colour for your walls. Grey is still the neutral of choice for the foreseeable future and matches almost every colour. You can add an accent colour on cushions, or a chair, rug or print. Including your budding teenager in the design is a must – try and steer them away from the black walls though! But a large poster of their favorite band can make the space feel more like their own.
Storage The toys are gone but if there are a few that they (or you) don’t want to part with like cars or a Lego creation, put them on display on a bookshelf or funky metal cabinet with some glass doors (saves on dusting).
M
From Barbies To A Real-Live Ken ost of these tips are relevant for your teenage girl’s room – the accent colours may change but the basics are mostly the same. Maybe a dressing table could be included for all that makeup!

Baby’s Room
I
The Top Trends For 2017 In Nurseries BABY animal prints are a huge trend this year, and work well for both boys and girls. Check out floral wallpaper for the girls. Moving away from all the neutrals we love Jardin Crème designed by Nathalie Lete; it’s got such a bohemian style. If your taste is more subtle try Bouquet Bonbon wallpaper from the Little Greene Paint Company. Use a pop of colour by painting a piece of furniture in Mischief Pink. Little Greene is available from Corcoran’s Furniture Killarney.
F YOU’RE due a new arrival or are just moving baby to their own room, here are our top tips for decorating the space fit for your little princess or prince. Pick one thing you love – a picture, or throw, for instance –and work your room around it. Art is a great place to start; try one large piece or if you have smaller pictures, group them together for maximum effect. Don’t just restrict yourself to baby shops for your little one’s room. The chair, rug or art can all be bought from your favorite furniture shop, and the plus side of this is they will stand the test of time and won’t need to be changed out when baby grows. If you have the space a chair of some kind – preferably comfy – is a great investment. Choose something that has classic lines that can fit into another room in your home if you’re tight for space when you need to replace a cot for a bed. Choose a light you can dim or place a lamp in the room so when you check on baby you don’t wake them! Organization is key for your sanity; looking for wipes at three in the morning is not funny at all! A changing table or a great alternative option is a chest of drawers with a change mat on top, as it can be used later on for clothes storage. Babies are only babies for a very short time.

F1 Is Back To Its Best Rally
Rally Poland This Weekend FOR F1 fans, last week’s Baku race had it all, from yellow flags to red flags to safety cars to road rage to McLaren finishing in the points. The eventual winner was Daniel Ricciardo driving for Red Bull. At one point he was in 17th place but took full advantage of several safety-car stints and the numerous incidents to grab an unexpected win. Valtteri Bottas for Mercedes was second and at one point was last a lap down after crashing into Kimi Raikkonen and the 18-year-old rookie, Lance Stroll for Williams, was third but lost second metres from the finish line. But the excitement didn’t finish there, the championship rivals Hamilton and Vettel got involved in an incident of
their own that will likely bring an end to the good-natured spirit of this year’s title race. The former appeared to brakecheck Vettel, who immediately pulled up alongside Hamilton and ran his Ferrari into his flank to make his point just before the red flag came out. Brilliant! The gloves are off – it is about time. F1 has lacked passion in recent years. Max Verstappen’s engine failed, Daniil Kvyat’s Toro Rosso also ground to a halt. Felippe Massa’s William’s suspension failed while he was running ahead of Ricciardo. And the icing on the cake was Fernando Alonso bring home his McLaren in the points for the first time this year finishing in eight. What a race!
CITROEN has dropped Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle from its line-up for this week’s Rally Poland, with Andreas Mikkelsen instead joining Craig Breen and Stephane Lefebvre. Mikkelsen has stated that he is confident that he and Kris Meeke could have challenged for the 2017 World Rally Championship title for Citroen had they worked together all season. Volkswagen refugee Mikkelsen had made his Citroen debut in place of Lefebvre at the previous round in Italy. Mikkelsen has put his experience of the other two 2017 World Rally Cars he has driven into the C3 and believes he made “real progress” in a recent two-day test. Citroen has implemented two homologation changes for Poland: but Citroen confirmed that Meeke had been pushing for change in these areas. Killarney is also represented in this event by Rob Duggan who is contesting the JWRC in his Ford Fiesta. Rob is currently sixth in the JWRC going into this round 42 points behind the leader. Poland is the third round of a six-round championship with the remaining rounds in Finland, Germany and Spain. There are plenty of points available to Rob to climb back into contention and he has shown he has the pace of the front-runners in previous rounds.

Garden Magic Debby Looney
Debby Looney checks out what June has to offer THERE is nothing more restful than sitting back and enjoying the view of your herbaceous border in the summer – bees buzzing busily among the flowers, warm air heavy with the scent of roses and lavender, gentle breeze rustling through the foliage…idyllic. However my reality this year is vastly different. Tall Scabious, paeonies and Delphinium flat on the ground, despite grow rings and stakes. Foliage ripped to pieces by wind? Caterpillars? Rain? I am at a loss. All I can say is that high up here in Currow my garden looks like a hurricane went through it. So, my next project is creating a restful place, no matter what weather is thrown at us! To this end, there can be no other solution than a formal garden. Symmetry, hardy plants and minimum maintenance. There are different types of formal gardens. There is the traditional type, which can be seen in Muckross House at the restaurant. Beds in various symmetrical shapes are marked out, and the perimeters are planted either with Buxus sempervirens, box hedge for low edging, or Taxus baccata, yews for a higher edge. These need only be fed and clipped to shape, twice a year. The space within can then be filled either with summer bedding, or plants such as Nepeta, catmint, or hardy geraniums. In the autumn bulbs can be planted for a spring display. Roses can be planted in block colours, or herbs can be an option also. Grass can even be sown. Another type of formal garden is the knot garden, which probably originated in Tudor times. Geometric shapes are made by interweaving “ribbons” of plants. The best effect is had by using one to three different plants, for example, use box and Santolina for a silver and green look, or Berberis thunbergii ‘Inspiration’ intertwined with Berberis buxifolia ‘Nana’, for a burgundy/ green look. Features such as a topiary bay can be added for some height, or an obelisk or statue in the centre. These gardens can also be created from herbs, upright thyme and hyssop are ideal, especially if space is limited. Normally the space between plants would be covered with weed suppressant and decorative stone, so, apart from clipping, they really are low maintenance. There are no limitations to these gardens, except space and cost. The cost is relative to the length of “ribbons”, but additions can always be made at a later stage. Designs abound on the internet, but the Book of Kells is where I hope to find my inspiration! These types of gardens really are quite versatile, yes, the structure remains the same, but what can be done with the spaces is limited only by imagination. And best of all, neither wind nor rain will affect these gardens so they are ideal for the wet, weary, windswept gardener!

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally
Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels MATTHEW 10:37-42: Jesus never wanted suffering for anyone but he knew that if anyone was going to follow in his footsteps promoting love and respect for every person, they would meet with opposition. Fidelity has its price, but also rewards. Would you agree? The passage is a call to both radical and practical discipleship. When have you found that in order to achieve a certain objective you had to make it a priority, and then take the practical steps necessary to reach your goal? What were the benefits to you when you did this? “Hate” is prophetic exaggeration for the uncompromising loyalty Jesus seeks in disciples. There may be times when people make demands in conflict with fidelity to another relationship. This can be painful. When have you found that being clear about your priorities helped you in that situation? John Byrne OSA, Veritas

to pause and take stock of things. It can be hard to find time to reflect on how our faith is faring. When we do get a minute to assess things, do we find ourselves wanting? Many of us have the idea that we would like to live better lives, to be more caring, to help those in need. We would like to live up to what Jesus asks of us, if only we had time to do more. This desire to do better is an important element of our Christian journey. But often we imagine that this will require some sort of grand gesture or dramatic change of direction. If we are paralysed or overwhelmed by what we can’t do, Jesus has some good news for us today. A cup of water isn’t much, and offering hospitality to a stranger might not seem like a big deal, but that is where Jesus starts. Instructing his twelve disciples, he tells them that anyone who welcomes them or offers them a cup of cold water will be rewarded. What’s more, he adds that anyone who welcomes them in fact welcomes Jesus, the one who sent them. Small acts of kindness and hospitality have significance beyond what we might expect. No matter how busy we are, there are opportunities every day to offer a cup of water here, or a helping hand there. All these small things play their part in building up God’s kingdom. Tríona Doherty, Veritas

ROHAN (NEE FERRIS)
In loving memory of Aileen Rohan, late of Kings Park, Muckross Road, Killarney who passed away on 1st July 2016 If roses grow in heaven, Lord please pick a bunch for me, Place them in my Aileen’s arms And tell her they’re from me. Tell her I love her and miss her, And when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek And hold her for awhile. Because remembering you is easy, I do it every day, But there’s an ache within my heart That will never go away. Thinking of you always with love, your Husband Mark and Son Eugene. ‘My Heart Belongs to you’. Aileen’s First Anniversary Mass is on Friday 30th June at 6.15pm at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.
1ST ANNIVERSARY ROHAN (NEE FERRIS)
Aileen Rohan, Kings Park, Muckross Road, Killarney, who passed away on 1st July 2016 In loving memory of Aileen, our Dearly Beloved Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Daughter in law, Aunt and Best friend. Sadly missed by her Husband Mark, Son Eugene and all the Rohan and Ferris Families. We wish to convey our sincere gratitude to all who sympathized with us and took the time to call to the house, funeral home and cathedral over the weekend. Thanks to our neighbours, relatives and friends who helped us get through the sadness. Also thanks for the cards, letters, and phone calls and just being there for us. Thank you to the Doctors who treated Aileen through her illness Dr. Michael Moloney GP and Dr. John McCullagh GP, New St, Killarney, Dr. Michael O’Sullivan of CUH, Dr. Clare Faul of Hermitage Clinic. To Dr. Patricia Sheahan of Palliative Care Tralee. We just want to express our deepest gratitude you and your team for the excellent treatment, care, kindness and laughs you gave to Aileen during her final days. Thanks to The Staff of ‘The Mon’ and ‘The Mercy’ for taking such care of Eugene over the duration of Aileen’s illness. It’s great to know that Aileen knew you all.
In loving memory of Aileen Rohan (Nee Ferris), late of Kings Park and O’Kelly’s Villas, Killarney, who died on 1st July 2016. My wonderful daughter Aileen, God called your name so softly, That only you could hear, No one heard the footsteps, Of the angels, drawing near, You left this world so quickly, We still wonder why, The hardest part of loosing you, Is that, we never said goodbye. Miss you everyday Ails. Always on my mind, Love Mam xxx
Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep in a beautiful garden, Beneath a golden sky, Look around your garden lord, For an angel with a smile, She wont be hard to recognise, She must stand out a mile, Put your hand around her Lord, And kiss her smiling face, She is very special, And can never be replaced, We lost an Aunt, Godmother, Friend and sister, But our love for you Ails will last forever. Always loved and missed by your brother Eamonn, Sister-in-law Yvonne, Niece Niamh and Godson Ciarån. May you rest gently in Heaven. Anniversary Mass, Friday 30th June, 6.15pm in St.Mary’s Cathedral.

MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. G.S
A special smile, a special face, And in our hearts, a special place, Our memories we keep one by one, Things you’ve said and Songs you’ve sung, Bring a smile, sometimes a tear, But always a wish, that you were here, No words can tell, no tears express, The love, the loss, the emptiness, You are not just a memory, Or part of the past, You are ours to remember, As long as life lasts.
I am sending a dove to heaven, With a parcel on its wings. Be careful when you open it, It’s full of beautiful things. Inside are a million kisses, Up in a million hugs. To say how much I miss you, And to send you all my love. I hold you close within my heart And there you will remain. To walk with me throughout my life, until we meet again. To my beautiful cousin Aileen, miss you every day, lots of love Jude

On the first anniversary of Marys death, we her sisters, brothers, sisters in law, nieces and nephews wish to extend our most sincere gratitude to all those who sympathised with us on our sad loss. Always remembered by Karen It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone. A part of us went with you, The day God took you home. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place no one could ever fill. Always remembered by Laura God saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So he closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine.” Always remembered by Alan and Suzanne

MIRACULOUS INVOCATION TO SAINT THERESA, THE LITTLE FLOWER
Eternal Father, I thank you for the grace you gave to your servant, Edel Quinn, of striving to live always in the joy of your prescence, for the radiant charity infused into her heart by your Holy Spirit, and for the strength she drew from the Bread of Life to labour until death for the glory of your name, in loving dependence on Mary, Mother of the Church. Confident, O Merciful Father, that her life was pleasing to you, I beg you to grant me, through her intercession, the special favour I now implore..., And to make known by miracles the glory she enjoys in Heaven, so that she may be glorified also by your Church on earth, through Christ Our Lord. Amen. B.L
PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. B.L
PRECIOUS MOTHER OF JESUS Mother of Divine Grace, you can find a way, where there is no way. Please hear my prayer and grant me my request. (Say 6 times daily & your request will be granted). B.L
NOVENA TO ST. ANTHONY O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. Whisper my petition into the ear of the sweet infant Jesus who loved to be held in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Promise publication. B.L

Athletic and Celtic Play Out Stalemate in Tense League Final The Killarney rivals will have to do it all over again following a nervy nil-all draw in Mounthawk Park, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan Kerry Premier A League Final Killarney Athletic 0-0 Killarney Celtic There was a bit of an anti-climax in Tralee on Sunday as the much-anticipated all Killarney league final between Killarney Athletic and Killarney Celtic failed to produce a winner. Both sides had chances to clinch the title but, in general, defence came out on top in what must have been a fairly dour spectacle for the supporters. Celtic had Jamie Spillane sent off in the second half but Athletic were unable to capitalise on their oneman advantage in the closing stages. In fact, Celtic could well have won it themselves at the death but we just about managed to keep them at bay and force a replay.
You’d have to say that Celtic played the better football but I think we did a decent job of limiting their sights at goal Killarney Athletic’s Daithí Casey breaks away from Killarney Celtic defender Brendan Falvey in the Kerry Premier League Final on Sunday. Pic: Paudie Healy
A great crowd turned up at Mounthawk Park to see this one and the atmosphere was electric at times. Having two Killarney teams play a final back in Tralee is far from ideal but in fairness to the supporters they travelled in their numbers. Unfortunately, the players didn’t give them a whole pile to shout about. In the first half, we had an effort cleared off the line and Roy Kelliher did well to deal with Seán Cournane’s long-range shot but Celtic had more of the ball and had us constantly on our toes. A lengthy stoppage for simultaneous head injuries to Pa McGrath and Eanna Kavanagh did little for the flow of the game, and another serious knock in the second half left Will Courtney laid out for a good ten minutes. He was stretchered off to hospital where he was treated for concussion and he’s unlikely to be back in action for a few weeks. The game’s main talking point arrived with around 15 minutes to go when Daithí Casey was first to
a bouncing ball around 30 yards from goal. He nodded the ball forward and set off in pursuit but Celtic centre half Jamie Spillane brought him down to deny us a clear goalscoring opportunity. Spillane received his marching orders and Celtic had to play the rest of the game a man light. Possibly the best chance of the day subsequently fell to Athletic substitute Paudie Clifford but he was unlucky to see his header sail just over the bar. Celtic almost snatched it at the death when skipper John McDonagh’s vicious free kick was tipped onto the crossbar by Brian O’Connor. It was a quality strike and the save was just as impressive. All in all, though, it was a day for defenders as both sides opted to keep it fairly tight. You’d have to say that Celtic played the better football but I think we did a decent job of limiting their sights at goal. I would expect the replay to be a bit more open and with extra time to be played if necessary, and penalties, the fifth and final Killarney derby of the season could be the best one yet.
Athletic: Brian O’Connor; Brian O’Reilly, Paudie O’Connor, Eanna Kavanagh, Adam Moynihan; Michael O’Donoghue, Shane Doolan; Will Courtney, Daithí Casey, Seán Cournane; Shane Lynch. Subs used: Lukasz Polak, Paudie Clifford, Pauly O’Donoghue and Conor Farrell. Celtic: Roy Kelliher; Chris O’Leary, Jamie Spillane, John McDonagh, Brendan Falvey; Pa McGrath, Gary Keane; Wayne Sparling, Matt Keane, Peter McCarthy; Cathal O’Shea. Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy THE LIONS are still making the headlines as we are hitting the business end of the Tour to New Zealand. Last Saturday, the first Test took place at Eden Park in Auckland. The big news during the week was Warren Gatland’s selection of Munster Captain Peter O’Mahony as captain for the first test, a momentous honour for the Corkman. Following in the footsteps of Paul O’Connell and Brian O’Driscoll in the honour of captaincy, O’Mahony appeared determined ahead of the
big match, however a huge challenge awaited in Kieran Read’s men and Saturdays match turned out to be a disappointment for the Northerners. The All Blacks defence was instrumental in winning the game for them with the Lions conceding far too many penalties. Reiko Ioane scored a brace of tries for the home side, however Sean O’Brien’s touchdown from a fantastic 80 metre move will give Steve Hansen nightmares ahead of the second test next Saturday. Without a doubt Sean O’Brien’s try is one of the best tries the British and Irish Lions have ever scored and is well worth checking out on YouTube! The Irish National side won a third match last weekend away in Japan, following on from wins
over Japan and the USA already over the past few weeks. This tour gives Joe Schmidt the chance to give young blood the chance to impress. Keith Earls scored another try to become Ireland’s record scorer with 9 tries scored in one solitary season. I’m sure there are a few players, the likes of Earls and Zebo who are watching the Lions Tour and must be wondering what they could have offered against the All Blacks, especially Zebo, who played in the famous win at Soldier Field in Chicago where the Irish beat the All Blacks for the first time a few short months ago. With two tests to go, I’m sure they will watch to see if Gatland can muster a series win. Time will tell!

This year’s ROK is dedicated to the memory of the late Annette Mannix who lost her life recently in Killarney while cycling and to the 10 other cyclists who were killed on the roads of Ireland so far this year,” said Cathal Walshe, PRO of the ROK when I spoke to him recently. Huge work goes on behind the scenes to cater for the following logistics – 36,000 bananas, 30,000 tea bags, 24,000 sandwiches, 20,000 litres of water and 1,000 litres of milk. We wish the cyclists a successful trip around the scenic Ring and let safety be uppermost in the minds of all. Colm Cooper will start the cycle at 7am and it is a cycle not a race.
The maximum attendance for the Stadium has been set by the Health and Safety authority at 38,235 KERRY V CORK
The summer would not be the same without it and no better a spectacle than to see Cork and Kerry renew their rivalry in the Munster SFC final in Killarney or in Cork. It was due to be played in Cork this year to coincide with the official opening of the revamped Páirc Uí Chaoimh, but that job has not been completed, so the games were switched to Killarney. What an added bonanza that is for the local economy. The ROK cycle event is worth at least 20,000 bed nights to Killarney and you can expect up to 25,000 attendance at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. All of this is in addition to the normal busy holiday season which peaks in July and August. The maximum attendance for the Stadium has been set by the Health and Safety authority at 38,235. Cork football has been going through lean times especially for the past two years, so it is easy to see how Kerry could be lulled in to a false sense. Cork haven’t won in Killarney since 1995. They came close two years ago when a last gasp point from Fionn Fitzgerald the Kerry corner back drew the sides level. Kerry went on to win the replay. Many of the Kerry fans share the viewpoint that Kerry are raging hot favourites to win on Sunday, but Eamonn Fitzmaurice will be very wary of this. Cork go in to this game as complete underdogs. They beat lowly Waterford and Tipperary by just a single point in each game and that does not inspire much confidence.
Kerry goalkeepers Brian Kelly, left, and Brendan Kealy pictured at the Kerry team training session in Fitzgerald Stadium ahead of the Munster football final against Cork on July 2. Pic: Don MacMonagle
They will look to such players as Michael Hurley James Loughrey and the seasoned campaigners Paul Kerrigan, Donncha O’Connor, Michael Shields and Colm O’Neill. They will be without Brian O’ Driscoll who dislocated his shoulder in training.
KERRY’S BEST GAME IN 2017
Kerry’s best game this year was the division 1 national league final, where they beat Dublin by a single point. In the first half against Clare Kerry were quite poor and the scores were level at the interval. They were down to 14 men for the full second half, playing against the wind and went 2 points down early in that second half. However, they buckled down to the task on hand and won convincingly at the end. Midfield was a real weak spot. They will welcome back David Moran but who will partner him, the experienced Maher or the youthful Jack Barry? Anthony Maher lacks the pace that is needed for a Munster final so it would not surprise me if he does not start. The defence is strong enough with Peter Crowley the best on view in the Clare game. Up front James O’Donoghue showed great form and his free taking off his hands in the right corner was consistently good. That is very important now that Gooch has retired. Paul Geaney is fine as a free taker on his own side but has a poor record from the right corner. Geaney needs to be in top form to make sure that a high score is achieved. Will Stephen O Brien be on from the start? On the evidence in Ennis he should be in from the start in place of Barry John Keane who was very poor before he was taken off at half time. Keane has played his best football when he came on so often as an impact sub. Kevin McCarthy should start even if his contribution on the scoreboard is still poor enough.
CAUTION TO THE WIND
Cork will not relish the idea of a humiliating defeat to Kerry in a Munster final so they will throw caution to the wind and will be prepared to have a right go to dethrone the Munster champions. However, Kerry have the better options and will be fancied to
clinch the Munster crown.
KERRY MINORS
Kerry bid for four-in-a-row wins in their Munster final v Clare and all the form points to a Kerry victory, led by the very talented David Clifford.
BAGS AND TICKET SEARCH
Renewed awareness of security means that all bags will be searched. Spectators are advised to expect a Ticket and security search in the environs of the stadium and allow time accordingly. The advice of Kerry PRO John O’Leary is that if you do not need a bag leave it at home! Patrons should also note the early throw-in for both games The Minor game between Kerry and Clare throws in at 12 noon and the senior game between old rivals Kerry and Cork has a 2pm throw-in time.
STAND
There are approximately 5,500 Stand Tickets for distribution between the three competing counties when Season Ticket holders are deducted from the stand capacity. The majority of these tickets will be allocated to the competing counties. A limited number of stand tickets went on sale at the usual sources. Stand Tickets pre-purchased before midnight on July 1st cost €35 which includes the pre-purchase discount.
TERRACE

Terrace tickets, if pre-purchased before midnight tomorrow, cost €25. Juvenile terrace tickets apply to the Red section only. Killarney Celtic
AGM: Killarney Celtic had a big and enthused attendance at our AGM. The new committee is Chairman Paul Sherry, Vice Chair Brian Looney, Sec-
30.06.17 retary Suzanne Scully, Treasurer Liam Shine, Welfare Audrey O’Leary/Pat Rice/Mike Courtney Committee, Sheila McGillicuddy, Tim Jones, Linda Clifford, Mike Lyne, Denis Tucker, Padraig Daly Padraig Hartnett, Ramona Burchill - Social Media. Premier League Final: Killarney Celtic 0 Killarney Athletic 0: There was a huge exodus of people from Killarney to Mounthawk Park for the most eagerly anticipated League Final for many a year. Celtic made the better start, with Cathal O’Shea almost picking out Wayne Sparling for a goal and Gary Keane narrowly wide of target. A great ball from, Daithi Casey to Shane Lynch showed how dangerous our neighbours can be, but John McDonagh masterfully closed out the chance. A superb move involving Brendan Falvey (who was superb throughout), Matt Keane, and Peter McCarthy almost saw Cathal make the breakthrough. However, Athletic dominated the next ten minutes. Daithi Casey forced Roy Kelliher into saving a powerful free kick, William Courtney and Sean Cournane combined to give Mike Stam O’Donoghue a chance, Shane Lynch fractionally scuffed a volleyed effort that Roy gathered, and Roy then made the save of the game from Sean Cournane. A minute later captain John McDonagh had top be alert to clear a ball off ourt goal-line. The pendulum soon swung back in Celtic’s favour, with a mesmerizing run by Wayne Sparling yielding a corner and Cathal O’Shea’s header from a Peter McCarthy cross cleared off the line, but it remained scoreless at the break. Athletic had the better off the first half. Unfortunately, a fall saw William Courtney injured and eventually stretchered to hospital after being treated by Stefan McMahon and Suzanne Scully – we are all very lucky to have qualified medical staff on hand, because they were badly needed. Thankfully, William is on the way to a full recovery. Celtic kept the pressure up but couldn’t make the breakthrough, and the game turned in the 82nd minute when Jamie Spillane fouled Daithi Casey as the Athletic star was about to make a breakthrough and got a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. We were very much under the cosh after that, but managed to hold out with some superb defending and a high workrate. REPLAY: The replay will take place this Friday night at 7.30pm in Mounthawk Park, extra-time and penalties if needed. Hope to see you all there!
Killarney Golf & Fishing Club,
Men’s Club Club Captain Declan McCarthy on behalf of the whole club wishes to congratulate Luke Walsh on his selection on the Boys under 16 Munster Team, this is a fantastic achievement, and one that the whole Club is justifiably proud of, congratulations Luke. The Club senior team were in action in Tralee G.C. last weekend, and they won their first match against Glengariff by a margin of 4/1. This set up a match against the
very fancied home team of Tralee, and after a tremendous tussle, the outcome hinged on the 3rd match with Ian Spillane representing Killarney, and after a heroic effort Ian won his match on the 4th tie hole. Killarney then faced Ballybunion in the West Munster Area Final, which turned out to be a ding-dong affair, and although our 1st player out, David O’Donoghue lost his match by a margin of 7/6 his opponent Ed Stack was 3 under par for the 12 holes played. Simon Gallivan in the 2nd match was involved in a titanic struggle but he eventually succumbed to his opponent by a margin of 2/1. Donal Considine playing in his usual role of anchor-man won his match by a margin of 4/3, and result hinged on the 3rd and 4th matches, both of which were involved in nail-biting encounters, unfortunately Ian Spillane succumbed on the 18th green to lose his match by a margin of 1 hole. The final match on the course involved Joe McClean, and his match was called in from the 18th fairway, Team manager Seamie O’Connor is to be congratulated on this fantastic showing, which unfortunately just came up that little bit short. The Club competition on Sunday last was the Broderick Grass Machinery Specialists, sponsored Fourball better-ball competition, and the results were as follows. 1st Jamie Cronin (19) & Seamus Cronin (13) 47 pts, 2nd Dan O’Leary (14) & Liam Daly (19) 46 pts, 3rd Eugene O’Sullivan (4) & Donal Cronin (11) 44 pts and 4th Eoin O’Donoghue (9) & Padraig Sweeney (8) 44 pts. Our next Club competition will be the Moriarty’s Heather Restaurant sponsored singles stableford competition which is one of our Club exchange days, and a GOY competition, and will be played on Ballybunion Old Course on Sunday the 9th of July.

A meeting took place on Wednesday 20th June of the Lough Lein Working Group at the new council chambers in Killarney, comprising of stakeholder bodies in the catchment and coordinated by Kerry County Council. The meeting discussed a number of topics relating to the water quality and biological monitoring on the lakes. Of interest was the improvements presently being noted from the commencement of data sampling in 1982 to the records filed for 2016. The phosphate level recorded back then was 22 with a level of 9 being recorded in 2016. Other marker biological traits were also showing decline and to the naked eye, the transparency of the water column was improved from 1.2 meters in 1982 to 2.9 meters for Lough Lein. Incidentally the Middle lake had a level close to 4.9 meters and the upper lake approx 3.4 meters. Once we have further relevant information gathered post the meeting debriefing we will update our notes.
Killarney RFC Notes:
Touch Rugby takes place at Aghadoe every Tuesday evening between 7pm and 9pm. Touch is very similar to
tag except the tackle is effected by a one-handed touch, this encourages better pass timing and selection. It’s an ideal introduction for novices and a chance to develop open play skills for more experienced rugby players. The rule set we are playing currently is the most inclusive, for example girls are given two touches in open play so it really brings them into the game all tries are then worth 1 point as appose to “girls trys” being worth 2 points as in tag which tends to encourage girls to hang out on the wings rather than getting stuck in. People have taken to it quite well due to the simplicity. You can see the skill level improving with every play. So why not come along to Aghadoe and join in the fun. Contact Mike on 087-6489628 for details. Kids tag rugby continues every Saturday morning at our pitches in Aghadoe between 11am and 12 midday. Open to boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 12, tag rugby is proving to be great fun for all involved, introducing the kids to the skills needed while they make new friends and have fun. Contact coordinator Liam Murphy on 087414662 for further details.
Killarney Athletic
RESULTS: Premier A Final, Killarney Athletic 0-0 Killarney Celtic. We will have to do it again. A great chance late on for Paudie Clifford. Celtic had Jamie Spillane sent off. A great athletic team performance with Eanna Kavanagh , Paudie O Connor and Micheal Stam O Donoghue outstanding. TOMMY HEALY CUP: Killarney Athletic B 4-3 Ballyheigue B. Athletic opening the scoring when Damien McCormick converted from a Gary Moynihan header inside the opening 10 minutes. From the re start, Martin Crowley set Chris O Meara who calmly slotted the ball into the top corner. Chris wasn’t finished and a quick set piece moments later gifted Chris with another goal to give the Athletic boys a 3-0 lead after 30 minutes. Ballyheigue started the comeback in the second half and 2 tremendous goals brought them back in by the bare minimum before a late goal by Daniel O’Sullivan gave Athletic the cushion of a 2 goal lead before Ballyheigue got a cracking 3rd goal that was reminiscent of Denis Bergkamp type goal. Athletic now meet Strand Road in the coming week. LEAGUE FINAL REPLAY: The Replay of the Premier final against Killarney Celtic will take place this Friday night 30th June at 7:30 at the KDL grounds in Tralee. All support is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations and well done goes to all our rowers, coxes and coaches, whose hard efforts secured the defense of the McGillicuddy Points Cup for best overall club for a ninth consecutive year with five race wins. Silver and bronze were secured in the Junior Sixes and Fours but it was gold once more in the Minor Sixes. An impressive double soon followed in the Veteran Ladies and Men’s races. The big race of the day was a repeat of the 2016 two-way contest between Muckross and Fossa with our Muckross men victors of the Senior Sixes. A powerful display with clear water as the winning margin. Dr Crokes Club
DR CROKES 0-13 AUSTIN STACKS 0-8: Scores were very slow to come in the first quarter. Both sides missed chances but our opponents were more guilty than us as regards their finishing. The game was won by us in the second quarter. Stacks had led by two points to one after fifteen minutes but we sent over seven points from play without reply to go six points clear as we entered the end of the first half. Our opponents had a point in injury time to leave us in front 0-8 to 0-5 at the interval. We got a good start in the second half and sent over two points to go seven points clear by the 35th minute. Stacks responded with three points without reply to reduce our lead to four points. We had two points before the end of the third quarter to put us further ahead. Both sides had plenty chances in the last quarter and even though the Tralee lads outscored us by two points in the last fifteen minutes they still fell short by five points at the full-time whistle. Well supported by our regular players many of our young players served us very well. It was very encouraging that David Shaw, Billy Courtney, Mark O’Shea and Adam O’Shea got game time, having completed their exams.

A brace of points from Liam Buckley left the half time score reading Spa 1-06, Fossa 0-07. In the second half Fossa reeled off three points to take the lead, a Niall McCarthy goal gave Spa new impetus but goals from Liam Buckley and Lee Lenihan then handed the lead back to Fossa. Towards the latter stages of the half an Eoin Carroll goal Spa the platform to run out winners on a score of Spa 3-11 to Fossa 2-10. U16 COUNTY LEAGUE: Ballydonoghue 2-09 Fossa 6-12. Fossa played Ballydonoghue in the first round of the
County League Div. 6 on Wednesday evening. Ballydonoghue started the brighter and raced into a 1-5 to 0-2 lead. Gradually however the Talbot brothers gained control of midfield and supplied some great ball to the forwards. Goals by Joe Cahillane and Darren Cronin pulled Fossa back into the game. But it was 3-6 from play by Emmett O’Shea - who was the main tormentor all night - and a cracking goal from Killian Buckley that put paid to the Ballydonoghue effort.
