Killarney Revs Up For Summer THE sight of numerous smiling visitors, many still with suitcases in tow, strolling at their leisure around the streets and the Muckross Road during this May bank holiday weekend said it all. Summer has arrived. The mood around town has been very buoyant in the wake of the successful start to the season. Gone are the days when so-called boy racers ruined the atmosphere at this key time in the Killarney tourism calendar, playing spoilsports for everyone, especially the genuine fans and followers of the Rally of the Lakes. Driving or walking anywhere in the greater Killarney area during the rally is a pleasant experience these days, with a carnival atmosphere prevailing for the 2017 event’s opening and closing events. The clerk of the course, Anthony O’Connor, and Killarney & District Motor Club have hailed the 38th annual rally as a huge success and thanked all involved, as well as the Gardaí, residents and businesspeo-

ple. Indeed the feedback has been positive all round, and deservedly so. The policing plans in place in recent years have yielded excellent results, noted Sergeant Dermot O’Connell of Killarney Gardaí. Additional resources from Cork and Limerick played a part also, while Killarney & District Motor Club officials

together with members of the Gardaí highlighted the “Keep the Race in its Place” safety campaign in advance of the International Rally of the Lakes. With no reports of criminal damage at the weekend, and no major incidents, the weekend was a far cry from years ago when the undesirable “boy racer” element ruined the fun for all.

Compulsory Purchase Order For New Killarney Burial Ground

KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL has published the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for the new Killarney burial ground. Planning permission was granted in February for the site in Knockeenduff. New burial ground has been high on the agenda of council meetings for many years now as the cemetery at Aghadoe has only a limited number of spaces remaining.

Earlier this year, the majority of Killarney Municipal District councillors voted in favour of granting planning permission for the site of the proposed new burial ground in Knockeenduff. The site will have 2,315 plots, 150 car parking spaces, and will serve the population of 20,000 in Killarney’s town and hinterland for the next 35 years. Kerry County Council has now made

an order for the compulsory purchase of 8.6 acres of land needed to develop the burial ground. This order is about to be submitted for confirmation to An Bord Pleanála, which may decide to hold an oral hearing. A copy of the order can be viewed at the county council’s offices in Tralee and at Killarney Town Hall up until June 7.

Celebration Of Youth Ministry In The Diocese Of Kerry THE Diocese of Kerry will celebrate the commitment and dedication of 15 adults who have completed a training course in youth ministry tonight, as Bishop Ray Browne presents certificates to the participants at a graduation ceremony in John Paul II Pastoral Centre.

“This course has developed the confidence and competence of leaders to deliver effective ministry with young people,” said diocesan spokesperson Mary Fagan. “It also nurtures the personal and spiritual growth of leaders for ministry in today’s Church.”

Youth ministry is more than programmes and youth events, added Ms Fagan. “Enabling the gifts of young people will make a real difference in Church, society and the world at large,” she said “This course will equip leaders to reach out and undertake this key role with young people.”

Living In Fear

A KERRY COUNTY COUNCILLOR has claimed that elderly and people living alone are now living in fear. Councillor Cahill, who raised the matter at the April meeting of Kerry County Council, has called on the Minister for Justice, Francis Fitzgerald, the Minister for Rural Affairs, Heather Humphreys and An Garda Siochána to address the increasing number of break-ins and robberies throughout the county, as a matter of extreme urgency, by installing CCTV vehicle registration cameras at strategic locations, as this will be a huge deterrent to criminals and travelling gangs. Councillor Cahill said a community in County Louth carried out similar measures which proved to be very successful, reducing robberies by 100% during the first 12 months. The Fianna Fail councillor said: “Many of our elderly are living in fear and have a pike or a spade beside the bed at night when they go to bed, as a form of weapon for protection. I am aware of a case in the Killarney area where a man places animal traps inside all the downstairs windows and the front and back door, “ stated Councillor Cahill. “We are reliably informed that many of these roaming gangs are coming into our county from outside and this is one way of catching them.”

Community

Lights, Camera And Action In Killarney THE Killarney community programmes of both Kerry Parents and Friends Association and Saint John of God Kerry Services jointly hosted a pre-launch of a short documentary titled “Hear Us Now” during the week. The documentary, screened at The Malton Hotel, is about young adults with intellectual disabilities leading normal lives. It is also highlighting the challenges that they and their families face. The adults in question come from Killarney and its surrounding villages and towns. They attend the day service programmes in Killarney of either one of the organisations where they receive training and support. “The message we want to communicate is ‘People with intellectual disabilities are important and should be listened to’,” they stated. “We are trying to raise awareness and generate support from the wider community on real social inclusion.” They added: “Real social inclusion means interacting with others who are not paid staff, a family member or other people with an intellectual disability. Real social inclusion means access to a paid job, social roles and relationships with non-disabled citizens. “Real social inclusion means providing opportunities and the right amount of support to those who need it most to live as an independent life as possible. It is coming up with real solutions to a real problem.” The group called on businesses to think about including a person with an intellectual disability in their workforce and urged the community to think about how to involve them in mainstream clubs/organisations/ schools/colleges and being part of community life.

Fire Service Tackles It’s University College Kerry Killarney Gorse Blaze

UNITS from Killarney Fire Service swung into action on Wednesday night to tackle a blaze at the foot of Mangerton Mountain. The fire broke out shortly after 7pm on an area of commonage – which has been the scene of serious fires in recent years. Earlier that day the Department of Agriculture issued a red alert warn-

ing of extreme fire risk to forestry because of the low humidity and easterly airflows. However, gorse fires are down 30% on last year, it is reported locally. Killarney fire officers have attended gorse fires over the past six weeks in Tomies, Mangerton and Kilcummin as well as the Killorglin area.

A NEW university outreach campus has been established in south Kerry. This comes as a result of a unique higher education and community development partnership between Kerry County Council, University College Cork and South Kerry Development Partnership. Based in Caherciveen, the university outreach campus for higher education, research and entrepreneurship is called the Skellig Centre for Research and Innovation (Skellig CRI). The centre aims to provide locally based access to higher education and research opportunities with the longterm objective of increased employment and sustainable economic development in the area. The new partnership has seen Clíodhna O’Callaghan of University College Cork taking up a position based in Caherciveen to manage the centre. The outreach satellite campus offers a space for higher educational institutions to deliver education programmes, modules, research and fieldwork.

Inset: Clíodhna O’Callaghan.

“It is a space that fosters collaboration, community building, and a higher education research and entrepreneurial spirit,” she said. Skellig CRI is currently based in Caherciveen Library and will be formally launched in the coming months.

Words: Eve Kelliher Photos: Eamonn Keogh IT WAS a case of action stations for Team Killarney this week as the town got ready for a clean sweep thanks to the Killarney Looking Good 2017 campaign. The clean-up drive, which has Killarney Advertiser as its media sponsor, was launched by Killarney Mayor Councillor Brendan Cronin, at The Porterhouse on Plunkett Street, on Wednesday evening. “As a committee and volunteers you can take fierce pride in what you have achieved,” Cllr Cronin told the gathering. “It would be glorious to be successful again in the National Tidy Towns competition.” Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns chairperson Yvonne Quill paid tribute to the volunteers and to Killarney Advertiser for its continuing sponsorship as

well as thanking Pat Sheahan and his family for hosting the event. “We want to increase the momentum of Killarney Looking Good and would very much welcome new volunteers,” Yvonne told Killarney Advertiser. “In addition, judging for the National Tidy Towns competition is just around the corner, with judges set to visit next month.” Since Killarney won the National Tidy Towns Competition in 2012, it has “stayed at the top”, noted Ms Quill. “It would be lovely to win it again,” she told the gathering. Ministerial Salute For Kerry Expo

THE Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Mary Mitchel met with the Kerry EXPO team on Friday at the Rose Hotel Tralee, to congratulate them on their recent successful event in the INEC in Killarney. Minister Mitchel had high praise for the efforts made by the team to highlight the job opportunities in Kerry over the next three years. December 2016 saw the launch of a campaign to promote Kerry as a place to live, work and study. “The aim of the campaign set out to encourage visitors

to the Kerry region to consider moving to Kerry to fill a number of existing job vacancies particularly in the professional services sector,” said expo director Liz Maher. “Equally, the campaign sought to attract the attention of Kerry natives living abroad in a bid to instigate or nurture the thought of returning to Kerry to live and work.” As a secondary part of the campaign a number of employers exhibited at the recent Kerry EXPO held in the INEC in Killarney on April 9 along with organisa-

tions and institutions currently involved in the promotion of education and upskilling. Event organisers undertook a brief investigation of the job creation landscape in Kerry and assessed potential job creation over the next three years. Some 120 Kerry businesses participated in the initial survey which included, start-ups, SMEs and major companies in the Kerry region. The tourism sector is forecast to boom at national levels and Kerry plays a very integral part of the national average tour-

ism figure. According to early indicators, job growth in this sector is expected to reach 36%. “Responses to the survey indicate that business leaders are aware of these looming challenges, but most industries are already liaising with various stakeholders in an effort to anticipate growing skills needs,” added Ms Maher. Kerry EXPO organisers say that they are currently liaising with both the GAA and the diaspora to facilitate the channelling of the “Come Home to Work” message throughout mainland Europe, US and Australia.

WE JUST can’t wait to get on the road again for Ireland BikeFest 2017 which rumbles into Killarney across the June Bank Holiday weekend. Now in its eleventh year, Ireland BikeFest is an action-packed, three-day festival that attracts motorcyclists in their tens of thousands from all over the world to the Kingdom. The fantastic scenery, touring routes, hospitality and free entertainment

make it one of the must attend festivals of the year. All Set To Step It Out For Nathan’s Walk

IT’S GOING to be lights, camera and action for the hit drama ‘Patrick’ when it returns for one night only in the INEC in Killarney on Thursday, May 11. The powerful show had a hugely-successful run last year in Rathmore and the INEC when over 7,000 people witnessed the story of Rathmore native Captain Patrick O’Connor, one of the four Kerry men to die in the 1916 Rising. The show is going to be filmed live this time round and another sell-out performance is expected. Written and directed by journalist and writer Aidan O’Connor, a total cast of crew of 90 people bring the story to life through moving scenes and powerful renditions of some of classic songs like ‘My Little Grey Home in the West’ and Mise Éire. Despite several requests to take ‘Patrick’ to other venues around Kerry, Dublin, and London, the cast have decided to stay local and the May 11 performance will be the final showing of the amateur production. A civic reception was awarded by

Kerry County Council to the cast and crew last year and a special monument to Captain Patrick O’Connor was unveiled in his native townland on April 23. “The script, the story and the remarkable talent of the actors and performers has moved people beyond all expectations. It’s powerful to see history come so alive,” Aidan O’Connor said. “We’re back at rehearsals again and we’re all excited it’s going to be recorded live at the INEC this time round. I think it’s something people will cherish even more in years to come,” he added. The managing director of the Gleneagle Group and the INEC, Patrick O’Donoghue, said: “This is a fantastic production and a brilliant musical drama. We are thrilled Aidan and crew have decided to return to the INEC after an extremely successful run last year.” A matinee performance will be held for students on May 11 at 11am. The show that night is at 8pm. Tickets are on sale from the INEC Box Office on 064-6671555.

There’s Something About Mary THERE will be a super-early start for walkers in Killarney tomorrow, Saturday, May 6, as they line out for Nathan’s Walk/Darkness into Light. Nathan’s Walk will start at 4.15am at the Killarney Race Course and participants are invited to walk, jog or run the 5km route at their own pace. There will also be pre-registration at the Killarney Race Course today, May 5, from 5-8pm. You should bring proof of registration (either printed or on your phone) and arrive 30 minutes before the start time. Pieta House founder Joan Freeman has urged this year’s participants to invite others to join them on the symbolic walk.

“Darkness into Light is all about kindness. It’s an opportunity for people who have lost someone to suicide to actually stop thinking about their loss and help to prevent it happening to other families,” she said. The Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District Cllr Brendan Cronin praised the O’Carroll family and Pieta House for organising the event. Marie and Denis O’Carroll lost their 14-year-old son Nathan to suicide in 2007. “There’s great credit due to the O’Carroll family for launching this event in memory of Nathan and being so involved in it,” he said.

EVERY good wish to young Glenflesk lady Mary O’Sullivan who is a finalist in the No Name Club National Youth Awards this weekend. The black-tie function, at the Lyrath Hotel in Kilkenny tomorrow, will bring together teenagers and adult leaders to celebrate the work that teenagers are doing in communities across Ireland. Mary, who will be representing the Killarney No Name Club, is a Leaving Certificate student at Coláiste Ghobnatan in Ballyvourney. She plays football with her local club Glenflesk and plays basketball with her school, winning county titles in the Cork region. Mary has a keen

interest in music and sings with her local youth choir. She has won All Ireland titles in Irish dancing and has participated in various competitions including Scor and Fleadh Cheoil. Fluent in Irish, Mary can speak a variety of languages including sign language and Chinese. She has been involved with Killarney NNC for the past two years and in that time has taken part in many of the club activities. She has also helped to fundraise for the Surf2heal charity. Mary visited Medjugorje last summer as a volunteer and hopes to work with young people in the future.

Rathmore Builds On Its Strengths To Tackle Homelessness Words: Eve Kelliher

WITH homelessness hitting the headlines nationally, a community in Kerry is determined to do its bit to tackle the problem. The latest national figures for homelessness show there are now more than 7,000 people who are homeless in Ireland. Last Sunday, Rathmore Social Action Group (SAG) unveiled a renovated convent housing development. This building has been handed over to the SAG by the Presentation Sisters. Sister Mary Kelliher, of the Presentation Sisters, noted that the planning of this project, between the SAG and the Presentation Sisters, was firmly built on mutual trust and respect on the part of both bodies. “This trust is the cornerstone of what we are celebrating today and what will be enjoyed by all who will use this facility into the future,” said Sr Mary. Four Sisters will continue to live in a restored portion of the convent and it will also house four state-of-the-art apartments for local people who need accommodation. Aidan O’Mahony, famous on the football pitch and the ballroom floor, cut the ribbon in style! Incidentally, in his younger years, he was a member of the SAG. Jerh O’Donoghue, chairman and founder of SAG, informed the gathering of local people and Presentation Sisters that this first phase of the renovation was paid for in full by fundraising without any grant aid whatsoever. He reminded anyone interested to take part in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle or they could sponsor the cyclists. He also invited anybody interested in joining the SAG group to apply, the only prerequisite being that they would sign up to the ethos Aidan O’Mahony with Sr Genevieve, Sr Maureen, Sr Mary O’Brien, Sr Stella, Noreen Hickey, Sr Marie Kelliher cutting the of the group. tape to officially opening of the Presentation Convent Project by the Rathmore Social Action Group with friends and neigh- Parish priest Fr Pat O’Donnell blessed the buildbours of Rathmore Social Action Group in Rathmore on Sunday. ing.

International Experts Map Out The Future For Cars Quentin Willson.

THE future of connected cars, autonomous vehicles and electrics and hybrids was top the agenda at a car-tech summit in Killarney during the week. The Electronomous event, held at the INEC on April 27, was hosted by original Top Gear presenter and motoring rights campaigner Quentin Willson. “With diesel fumes in London fast becoming an electoral issue, Ireland’s Electronomous event is spookily well timed,” he said. “Electric and hybrid cars and vans are part of the long-term answer to air quality prob-

Tributes to Fr Pat Moore

KERRY was in mourning this week for one of its most popular clerics following the tragic death of Fr Pat Moore. Fr Moore, who was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer two years ago, passed away on Monday. Among those leading the tributes were former minister Jimmy Deenihan, a close friend of Fr Moore.

He described Fr Pat, who would have turned 60 next month, as “what priests are supposed to be all about, people who bring communities together”. A native of Asdee, Fr Moore had been parish priest in Duagh and Lyrecrompane for 12 years until he retired, for health reasons, in 2016.

lems.” International guest speakers at the event also included the managing director of BMW Ireland and the managing director of Volvo Ireland. The one-day conference was aimed towards industry executives, engineers, dealers, senior motoring executives, owners and operators of the lease or rental fleets, regulatory bodies, insurance companies, technology providers, product developers, telecommunication operators and car sharing and automotive mobility solutions providers.

He previously served in Killarney and Gneeveguilla. A well-respected poet and writer, Fr Pat wrote a book just last year about his health challenges, entitled Weathering the Storm. He was laid to rest on in Aghavallen Cemetery on Thursday following Requiem Mass in St Mary’s Church in Asdee.

Career Options

Summer Schools For Prospective University Students During the summer months some colleges and universities will be hosting summer schools for prospective students interested in studying at university, notes career guidance counsellor Eithne Teahan SUMMER schools at colleges and universities are geared mainly towards 5th and transition year students. The events are designed to give students an insight into topics of study or career areas that appeal to them to help them decide if they are on the right career path. They are also an opportunity to visit the college and to get a feel for what it is like. UCD, NUI Galway and Maynooth University are all offering similar style programmes based on the courses they each have to offer to new undergradu-

ate students. The UCD Summer School runs over four days from the 6th to the 9th June. You can decide to attend one or more days depending on your preference on the topics being covered each day. The week begins with taster lectures, workshops and information on career opportunities in such areas as Music & Social Science, Architecture, Languages and Science and continues by covering subjects in different college departments during the week ending with an exploration of the Classics, Medicine and Social Policy & Social

Work. The cost is €35 per day including a sandwich lunch. Further information and booking can be made at www.ucd. ie/myucd/summerschool. NUI Galway is also offering a similar programme to UCD with summer schools in Computing/IT, Business, Engineering, Law and Science. These are run on different dates from June 8 to June 27. There is no cost for many of these events and further information and booking details can be found at www.nuigalway.ie/summer-schools. The Maynooth University Summer

HUBBLE and its pictures have more than any other mission since the heady days of the Apollo space programme, brought the magic of space to the public. Hubble has probed the depths of space and brought its wonders to our desktops. It wasn’t always easy. Shortly after launch, astronomers eagerly waited for the first images to be sent back. When they arrived, they were out of focus, soft and blurry leaving all concerned quite upset. It turned out that the large mirror used to collect the light had a flaw. A trip to the opticians was in order, but since Hubble is over 500 miles from the Earth, a Space Shuttle mission with corrective optics or “glasses” and a crew of astronauts to fit them would suffice.

In 1993 astronauts fitted the new optics system and other instruments. Finally Hubble could perform as it was designed to, and the images it sent back were breathtaking. Images showing stellar nurseries, solar systems forming around distant suns, the planets in mesmerising detail, high resolution vistas of distant galaxies and the Hubble Deep Field images with over 10,000 galaxies packed into an area of the sky over 50 times smaller than the full moon. Each galaxy packed with hundreds of billions of suns. Pretty impressive. Hubble was designed to be an instrument of science and has helped shape our understanding of the universe in so many ways, but perhaps its greatest achievement has been in bringing the wonders of the universe back to Earth.

Zero-Tolerance Approach Is Effective

Low numbers of so-called “boy racers” in Killarney during rally weekend was a direct result of Killarney Gardaí’s hugely successful policing operation. Here cartoonist Martin Carey gives his humorous take on the Gardaí’s triumph.

Comment

KILLARNEY GARDAÍ said their May bank holiday weekend operation was a successful one thanks to a zero-tolerance approach that has been adopted in the past number of years towards “boy racers”. No major incidents were reported, stated Sergeant Dermot O’Connell, adding that this was largely due to the strong operation in force throughout the weekend. “We had additional resources from Cork and Limerick as well as the air support unit and Garda dog unit,” Sergeant O’Connell told Killarney Advertiser. The drop in anti-social behaviour and criminal damage (no criminal damage was reported at all this May bank holiday weekend) is a result of “the culmination of the last number of years of policing operations”, added Sergeant O’Connell. “We adapt the plan every year and review it following the weekend,” he said. “This year’s plan was the result of five years of constant updating and responding to the public’s needs.”

Words: Cormac Casey

LAST weekend saw the return of the rally enthusiast to Killarney, to spectate the 38th running of the Rally of the Lakes. However there was a very noticeable but welcome absence of one particular group, the “boy racer” brigade. This was a relief to the rally organisers, rally enthusiasts and locals alike. This was the culmination of years of cooperation between the Killarney & District Motor Club and the Garda

Siochána paying off. This weekend, the group of “boy racers” was reduced to a manageable level. These individuals were never unwelcome – but their anti-social behaviour was. The unfortunate reason for converging on rally events was simply a time and a place to meet on their calendar. The difficulty for the rally organisers was the public perception between the rally enthusiast against the “boy racer” – or more so their behaviour.

And their conduct was something from which all rally fans would distance themselves from. For the bona fide rally enthusiast it was disheartening to say the least, and there was a feeling that the detrimental effect that this was having on the sport could get to a point of no return. It was wonderful to see the rally run without the backdrop of this handful of individuals’ anti-social behaviour taking centre stage.

There is now an opportunity to build on the success of the 38 years of the Rally of the Lakes and Killarney as a premier event destination. Well done to Dermot Healy, past Rally of the Lakes Clerk of the Course who spearheaded the first campaign against these individuals, the current Clerk of the Course, Anthony O’Connor, the Killarney & District Motor Club and An Garda Siochána for tackling this issue head on.

Theresa May Admits Brexit Puts Everyone’s ‘Economic Security And Prosperity At Risk’ FAILURE in Brexit negotiations could risk Britons’ “economic security and prosperity”, Theresa May has admitted. If talks do not go the UK’s way “we risk the secure and well-paid jobs we want for our children and our children’s children,” the UK Prime Minister conceded in a speech outside Downing Street. In the same address she launched a fierce attack

on EU politicians, accusing them of meddling in the UK general election and trying to wreck Brexit. Ms May said: “Making Brexit a success is central to our national interest. And it is central to your own security and prosperity. “Because while there is enormous opportu-

Parishioners For ‘Disappointing’ Collection BEAUFORT parish priest Fr Fergal Ryan has said the response has been positive from parishioners after he sent them a letter asking them to improve their performance when it came to paying their “dues”. Fr Ryan hit the headlines locally and nationally last week after he sent letters to parishioners, telling them: “[I have] noticed that your contribution to the support of the income of your

parish priest is zero.” Parishioners in his Beaufort are asked to pay €5 a week to run their church and €20 six times a year (€120), towards the parish priest’s living expenses. But Fr Ryan was unimpressed when collection envelopes were sent back. He wrote to locals saying: “This is very disappointing. I hope you can do better and support your parish priest,” Kerry’s Eye reported.

nity for Britain as we leave the European Union, if we do not get this right, the consequences will be serious. “And they will be felt by ordinary, working people across the country. This Brexit negotiation is central to everything.”

The Sunday Times featured the story also at the weekend, and Sunday, Fr Ryan told The Irish Mirror he has got a very positive reaction after telling them to dig deeper. He said: “This matter is between me and my parishioners, it is a private matter, it has nothing to do with the general public. I’m not commenting any further on the issue.” However, when asked what reaction

he had received to the letters, he said it had been very positive. Father Ryan has been parish priest in Beaufort for the past two years, having been based in Caherdaniel for a number of years prior to his appointment there. Meanwhile, a survey carried out by The Irish Catholic last year found that most priests around the country receive less than the average industrial wage.

Tragic Loss Of Young Academic Grace McDermott Comment

Words: Eve Kelliher

THE heartbreak of Grace McDermott’s family has resonated across the globe this week following the lecturer’s death in a Limerick house fire. The young woman’s devastated relatives are now planning her funeral instead of her wedding and the same songs Grace wanted for her nuptials will be performed at her funeral. Grace McDermott was originally from New York but had been living in Dublin and was lecturing in the School of Communications at DCU. She also started the Women are Boring blog, a tongue-in-cheek title for a website which invited women in academic life to share their experiences. Grace had been in Limerick to take part in the Great Ireland Run to raise money for Barrington’s Hospital when the fire broke out at the house she was staying in. Her mother revealed that the accomplished graduate, who was in her 20s, had been planning her wedding when she died.

She told the New York Post: “Most of all she was planning her wedding to the greatest guy in the world. “Now we’ll be using the same songs, the same hymns that she wanted at her wedding, the same flowers that she wanted at her wedding, for her service.” Gardaí are not treating the blaze as suspicious The Irish Sun and Irish Daily Mail both report officers are putting the tragedy down to an electrical fault and phone charger. The fact that investigators believe an electrical fault involving a mobile phone charger may have sparked the blaze is cause for huge concern. The National Standards Authority of Ireland previously warned of the dangers of leaving of electrical devices on beds or sofas. While duvets and quilts often undergo flammability testes, the NSAI says devise such as phone chargers, laptops, hairdryers and hair straightners can rapidly become lethal if not used in the appropriate environment.

Dublin’s Tallest Office Building Will House 2,000 Workers DUBLIN’S tallest office building is to be built over the next two years at Point Square on the city’s docks. Developer Harry Crosbie originally owned the site that will house the Exo. State agency Nama appointed Receivers Stephen Tennant and Paul McCann of Grant Thornton in 2013 after taking control of his property empire, which owed up to €500 million. The Three Arena and the Bord Gáis Theatre were also caught in the receivership. Mr Tennant and Mr McCann plan to appoint a contractor to build the 73m structure, which could house up to 2,000 office workers once it is completed. Savills who are agents for the building begin

the search for potential tenants now that construction had moved a step closer. Brexit could draw more commercial tenants to Dublin, but this is offering welcome capacity, as the capital’s office market is already strong. Developer Johnny Ronan, now well out of Nama, is lodging plans to build the tallest building in Dublin on a site adjoining Tara Street railway station, topped by a restaurant and bar with panoramic views over the city. However there is a race to the top as this proposed tower would be higher than the Exo, rising to a height of 88m (nearly 290ft), compared to 59m (194ft) for Liberty Hall, which was Dublin’s tallest building for years until it was outstripped the Google HQ in Grand Canal Dock, at 67m.

‘Sorry to hear you’re standing down, sir.’ ‘Well I can’t stand up much longer!’ THE Duke of Edinburgh took a typically irreverent view on his own retirement today telling one man who said he was sorry he was standing down: “Well I can’t stand up for much longer”. Prince Philip made himself and a crowd of guests roar with laughter while with the Queen at an Order of Merit service at St James’s Palace just an hour after announcing he will end his public royal duties at the age of 95. Meanwhile, an incorrect article published after Buckingham Palace announced an emergency meeting yesterday suggested Prince Philip had died. The Sun newspaper posted a story online with the headline: “Prince Philip dead at 95, how did the Duke of Edinburgh die, etc etc.” The story read: “Prince Philip, otherwise known as the Duke of Edinburgh, was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II.” French media also mistakenly published stories wrongly suggesting the Duke of Edinburgh had died. The Sun deleted the article within minutes of publication, but it continues to appear in searches on Google, along with its opening lines: “He was the oldest-ever male member of the British royal family, a constant companion to the Queen. But who was Prince Philip?” The Duke of Edinburgh awards, which he set up in 1956 and are now the world’s leading youth achievement awards across 141 countries, are regarded as one of his most striking achievements.

New Appeal For Baby Alannah’s Mum To Get In Touch GARDAI have renewed their appeal for information on a baby girl found dead at a recycling centre this time last year. The infant’s body was discovered at the Greenstar recycling centre in Co Wicklow on May 4, 2016. Officials named the baby girl Alannah and a post-mortem ruled out the possibility of deliberate harm. It is believed baby Alannah was found about two weeks after her birth. One possibility is that she had been stillborn. Anyone with information can contact Bray Garda Station on 01-6665300 or the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111.

The conference will also include an address from Paul McNeive, a chartered surveyor and managing director of Hamilton Osborne King when the firm was sold to Savills for €50m. “Paul started his career as a trainee in the basement of the firm and not even the loss of his legs in a fire prevented him from rising to the top position to lead 250 staff,” said Anita.

International Rally of the Lakes 2017

Sam’s The Man & Local Drivers Impress

AN IMPRESSIVE drive over Sunday’s dramatic stages resulted in Monaghan-based Ford Fiesta WRC driver Sam Moffett securing his second victory in the International Rally of the Lakes in Killarney. Starting day two of the rally in third place, 2014 winner Moffett and his co-driver, Karl Atkinson, were some 26 seconds off overnight leader Roy White, in another Fiesta, and 18 seconds behind the Hyundai R5 of Robert Barrable. Once the roads dried late on Sunday morning, Moffett set about reeling in his two rivals and a string of fastest times through Kilgobnet, Caragh Lake and Rockfield put him in second position. When the under pressure White crashed out on the second run over Kilgobnet, Moffett took the lead and held on to add to his 2014 success. Speaking at the finish ramp at The Gleneagle Hotel on Sunday evening, the 2017 champion remarked: “On Saturday night I went back to my hotel and went through every note to make sure everything was right. After Moll’s Gap on Sunday, I knew I had to push. I went brave on my tyre choice and it paid off.” Co-driver Elaine Ní She was the top Kerry competitor in the international section of the rally, finishing tenth overall and topping Group N alongside Donegal driver Gavin Kelly. For her efforts, she was presented with the Maurice O’Donoghue memorial trophy – in memory of the late Killarney hotelier and rally enthusiast – on Sunday night. Killarney’s own World Rally Championship star Paul Nagle is a former winner of this trophy. In the national section, John McCarthy was the leading Kerry co-driver, guiding Donegal man Declan Gallagher to second overall after a twoday battle with winner Kevin Eves. Kenmare’s Vincent O’Shea and Killarney’s Eoin O’Donoghue were the top all-Kerry crew in the event. They finished sixth overall in their Ford Escort and took home the John Mullane trophy, the most coveted local cup in the rally, for their efforts. Killarney father and son Charlie and Johnny Hickey overcame fuel pump troubles on Saturday to claim eighth place in the national rally while Tadgh O’Sullivan and Eoin O’Leary were tenth and won class 13 in their Ford Escort. Of the other local crews, Andrew and Tara Duggan were class winner as were Kenny O’Neill and Ronald O’Riordan who had to change a clutch cylinder on Sunday in their Ford Puma. Gavin O’Grady and Alan Moroney were 17th in the national rally while Cyril Wharton and Helen Duggan won their class. Seanie Hickey and Noel Fleming were third in their class in their Toyota, one place ahead of the Subaru of Kevin Sullivan and Martin O’Riordan. Marking a historic 35th appearance in the Rally of the Lakes, Noel O’Sullivan won class 9 for the umpteenth time, while navigator Nicky Burke was celebrating his 25th start in the rally. Charles O’Neil and Tony McCarthy were second in the class while Pat Sheahan and Keith McCarthy were another local crew to make the finish. Shane McCarthy won the junior rally, held over the Saturday stages, in his Honda Civic.

Friends Generate €38K To Help Kerry People With Motor Neurone FROM high nellies to high office, the Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone Disease have proved both intrepid and inventive since they got together in 2011. A memorable cycle featuring vintage bikes was just one fundraiser, in 2012, and the chairperson of the group, Christy Lehane, very memorably made it his business to secure a promise from the Taoiseach Enda Kenny when he was on the campaign trail in Killarney to cycle in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle for the cause. And last Wednesday the group presented over €38,000 to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMDA) at a special gathering in the Torc Hotel, Lissivigeen. The secret to the success of the tightknit group is the fact that all have had relatives or loved ones affected by motor neurone disease. “There are always tears where Motor Neurone is concerned,” Christy told Killarney Advertiser. But tears turned to sense of achievement at the cheque presentation led by Christy and his committee who met with the CEO of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA), Aisling Farrell and regional development officer Marie Reavey. Neurone is to raise awareness of the disease and generate funds for IMDA. “Since our inception we have been inspired by the many Motor Neurone sufferers that we have met,” said Christy. “They have offered us great encouragement and support in all our endeavours. We have organised events such as a sponsored walk, high nelly cycle, ice bucket challenge and participation in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cy-

cle to name just a few.” Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. MND is often referred to as the 1,000 day disease as most people die within 1,000

days of being diagnosed. One person dies every four days from MND. The IMNDA provides specialised services for people affected by this debilitating disease such as equipment on loan, financial assistance towards home help, advice and home visits by MND nurse. Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone will hold a flag day in Killarney on Friday, June 23.

THE sunshine has spelled success for a number of talented young athletes across the greater Killarney and Kerry area lately. Children were out in force for local and regional Community Games events over the past week. The Community Games, sponsored by Aldi, was founded half a century ago. Since 1967, the Games have provided young people with the means and the opportunity to

utilise their leisure time in a healthy and productive way. “The organisation is child-centred and the focus is on participation rather than winning. Children take part in friendly rivalry, in a fun and healthy way,” stated a spokesperson. “To qualify for the National Festival - individual participants must first compete at an area, then at county and sometimes at provincial level.”

The team at Killarney Advertiser would like to wish all competitors the best of luck as thy get ready to take their place among 7,000 from across Ireland as they represent their county in Community Games National Finals in Abbotstown, Dublin, tomorrow, May 6. Best of luck to all involved and many thanks to all the mentors who have helped train the competitors over the last few months.

Squash

Majic Finale To Killarney Squash Season Words: Andrew Garnett THE 2016/’17 squash season drew to a close last week with the final competition played out before a large crowd in the Aquila Club. This is the only time throughout the season that the American Scoring System is used and for this reason makes all games very competitive and entertaining. Division 4 Ruairi Counihan played Stephen Hussey in a lively encounter in Division 4 with serve swapping on a number of occasions. This was a very entertaining affair and both worked hard to seize the initiative. However, it was Ruairi who managed to emerge with the spoils collecting his first title. Division 3 The Division 3 final saw Gleneagle Squash Veteran and Jacuzzi Connoisseur John McCarthy take on Keith Cronin. This was a brilliant game for the spectators. John, showing his experience, settled quickly and took a 2-0 lead. In the third game he had 7 match points but Keith dug deep to come from behind and take the game. This proved decisive as momentum switched in favour of Keith and he went on to take the remaining two games and in doing so sealed the match for himself. Division 2 The penultimate game of the night paired Kevin Smyth and Seán Morris, a tight encounter was expected here and that was exactly what ensued. The match was played at a frantic pace throughout, Kevin found himself with game points in the first and second games only to be pipped at the post by Seán on both occasions. However, parity was restored over the course of the next two games and those watching were delighted to find the match

going to a decider. Seán had a little too much for Kevin here and came away with an excellent win in what was a hugely entertaining affair for those watching. Division 1 The showpiece of the night saw reigning champion Majic take on Arthur and the handicap meant that he would begin with a small advantage in each game. As expected some of the squash on show

was top class and there were a number of very long rallies which had both men blowing hard after. The first two games were shared amongst the players but Majic took command thereafter and won the match on a scoreline of 3-1 and in so doing, retained his title. A special word of thanks to all those who participated in each of our seven competitions this year, it’s great to see so many

Best Foot Forward Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio turns the spotlight on foot health SUMMER means sandals, so make sure your feet are attractive and in tip-top condition before baring them to the world. Feet are designed to perform two major functions, support and mobility. Taking sufficient care of one’s feet is important at any age but more so in later life. Our feet are vital to health and mobility. A person is more prone to foot problems like corns, blisters and foot infections in later life, as the skin becomes thinner and less elastic. Foot problems will reduce mobility and if an older person does not take sufficient care of their feet they will walk less which will consequently reduce their independence, and limit exercise and movement. TOENAIL CUTTING This is important at any age, but as we get older the nails may thicken and become difficult or sore to cut yourself. We can cut them for you, pain-free. CORNS AND CALLUSES Corns and calluses are areas of thickened skin that develop to protect that area from irritation. They are usually caused by rubbing or excess pressure against part of the foot. It’s important

to test them correctly and have corns removed as they may cause other problems to knees or hips as they may alter the way we walk. INGROWN TOENAILS Ingrown toenails, the most common nail impairment, are nails whose corners or sides dig painfully into the soft tissue of nail grooves, often leading to irritation, redness, and swelling. TOENAIL FUNGUS Toenail fungus is an infection underneath the surface of the nail caused by fungi. The disease is characterized by a progressive change in a toenail’s quality and colour or thickness. It can be treated but it is important to be seen by a registered foot health practitioner. ARTHRITIS Arthritis is inflammation and swelling of the cartilage and lining of the joints, generally accompanied by an increase in the fluid in the joints. Each foot has 33 joints that can be afflicted with arthritis. Reflexology can help ease the symptoms. • Call Jill at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio for more information on 0646633966

Use Your Hands Nutrition consultant Padraig O’Connor has some advice on portion control PORTION control is a vital component of healthy eating that can help maintain a healthy weight and prevent certain diseases. Many parents often provide their children with serving sizes that match their own. However, everyone is different and everyone has different nutritional needs. So how can we create optimum portion sizes? Here is a good trick to manufacture an ideal plate for both you and a child without having to fall into the complicated world of calorie counting. Your hands can be a great indicator of portion control as they are proportionate to your body and always will be. Thus they make the perfect tool for measuring food. Here’s how: SERVING OF PROTEIN Use one palm for a serving of protein. Protein includes meats, fish, poultry and eggs. SERVING OF VEGETABLES Use one fist size for a serving of vegetables. Don’t be afraid to have more than one serving from this section as veggies

are full of nutritious micronutrients that your body loves. SERVING OF CARBOHYDRATES Use one cupped hand for a serving of carbs. Carbohydrates include: sweet potato, quinoa, rice, pasta, potatoes and lentils. SERVING OF FATS Use one thumb for a serving of fats. The reason this is lower is that fats contain more calories per gram than proteins or carbohydrates. These guidelines are a great way to control your portion size. An example of a plate for a child could be one palm of protein (their hand of course), one cupped hand of carbohydrates, one thumb of healthy fats and one-two fists of vegetables. Be aware that these are guidelines and can vary depending on the person. • Killarney native Padraig (Podge) O’Connor is currently based in San Diego where he works in the health and nutrition field. He is co-founder of Harvest Food and Nutrition, harvestfoodandnutrition.com

Garden Magic

Save Yourself Needless Work It seems that the longer the days get, the longer the list of jobs in the garden gets, says Debby Looney

EVERYTHING, including weeds, is experiencing a growth spurt. Conifers always look their best at this time of year, especially those with brightly coloured shoots such as Picea “Daisy’s White”. Top of the list, for me, has to be Abies koreana, a beautifully shaped conifer, with bright green new growth and bright purple-blue cones. It is a slow grower and suitable for medium sized gardens as a specimen. Herbaceous plants are all making an appearance, and Candelabra Primulas are spectacular now, with their tall spikes of multi-coloured flowers. They grow particularly well in moist shady areas of the garden, and they are slug resistant. For some weeks now bedding plants have been available, but to my mind it has been too early to plant them out. However, when the weather is fine, we can’t help ourselves! Do keep an eye on the weather forecast and cover any annuals with garden fleece, or even some hessian. There is a fantastic range of pots available to the gardener, ranging from enormous glazed pots, to very affordable high quality plastic ones. My favourites are still the basic terracotta pot, as I love the way they age. There are pots to suit every situation, from square fibreglass ones in which topiary looks stunning to brightly coloured stackable pots. When planting pots, we have always been told to put some drainage in the bottom, such as gravel. This works quite well, but the new way of thinking is to omit any drainage. When water draining through the pot suddenly finds itself with nothing to cling to, that is, when it hits the “drainage”, it actually stops moving downward, and in a bizarre way causes waterlogging! So, save yourself the trouble, and put your compost straight in! Mix in some water retaining gel, and slow release fertiliser, then water the pot before planting. The gel will swell so you can gauge whether you have put in enough compost. As a rule of thumb, I find three patio plants such as surfinias or bacopas, in a 14-inch basket is plenty. Fill in any gaps with Trailing lobelia, or other bedding in trays. If you put too much into a basket or pot, the result will be some of the plants dying due to lack of space!

Motors Rally Argentina Crash My Biggest Ever

Rally KRIS MEEKE says the crash that ruled him out of Rally Argentina was the biggest of his career. Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle’s Citroen rolled 14 times after they hit a rock on the outside of a flat righthand corner on Saturday. It was their second roll of an incident filled event, coming after their C3 was thrown into the air on the opening day when running second. Kris and Paul were taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the leg two crash. They were running 14th having re-joined under Rally2 following their Friday crash. Though having

problems on every rally this year bar their win in Mexico which itself was not without incident, they continue to show the Citroen’s pace in Argentina. They set a top-three time on every gravel stage they completed and took two stage wins on Saturday. Meeke’s teammate Craig Breen was forced to retire on Friday with a damaged gearbox. However an oil leak on C3 WRC during the Saturday morning service halted their day’s action. After further repairs their C3 WRC rejoined on the final day under Rally2 rules.

Rally Of The Lakes

History In The Making For Killarney Duo TWO Killarney men revved up for landmark anniversaries at this year’s Rally of the Lakes. Noel O’Sullivan of Muckross was competing in his 35th Rally of the Lakes at weekend. He finished 24th overall in the national rally and won class nine by one minute, fifty-three seconds. It was his 32nd time using his Mark 2 Escort 4497 ZB. Navigating for Noel was another seasoned rally entrant, Nicky Burke of Woodlawn, who was completing the event for the 25th consecutive time. “This was my 22nd time starting beside Noel and navigating for him,” said Nicky.

Lifetime Warranty For Lynk & Co Cars The ambitious Chinese brand, which will share platforms and technology with Volvo, aims to take on the likes of Audi and BMW but has an unconventional approach – including lifetime warranty and connectivity on all its cars. Usually only luggage and easy-to-fix appliances carry lifetime warranties, but not anymore. Lynk & Co Senior Vice President and former Volvo exec, Mr Alain Visser made the announcement in China. Visser boldly claimed the long term warranty and data connectivity, as well as

novel car-sharing functionality, will assist the company to reshape the landscape for premium brand customers. Sales will commence in China late this year with the Lynk 01 compact SUV. Lynk & Co will then launch in Europe and North America in 2019. As well as offering what is claimed to be the automotive industry’s first lifetime vehicle warranty, Lynk & Co also wants to be a pioneer in

car-sharing. Touch a button in your Lynk & Co vehicle and instantly others will know your vehicle is available for use and thus – instead of sitting idle – it can earn some cash. Lynk & Co insists it will “democratise car-sharing” by offering the automotive version od AirBnB. Lynk & Co is promising the world – can it deliver?

Fernando Alonso Passes First Indianapolis Test Alonso impresses as he qualifies for Indy 500 practice McLaren driver Fernando Alonso can now officially take part in the Indy 500 after completing the mandatory Rookie Orientation Programme. Fernando Alonso has been described as the “real deal” in an IndyCar after he successfully completed his maiden test to clear him to compete in the Indianapolis 500 at the end of May. Three days after a forgettable Russian GP when unreliability on the formation lap meant he was able to take the start, Alonso was in action 5,500 miles away on the famous oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the man-

datory Rookie Orientation Programme. Driving a Honda-powered Andretti IndyCar in McLaren’s revived orange colours, Alonso passed the various speed tests in around an hour of running to qualify for Indy 500 practice which begins on May 15 ahead of the May 28 race.

Support Groups In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels JOHN 10:1-10: In the Middle East, it was the task of the shepherd to find water and pasture and to ensure safety. In your life who have been the people who nourished you and gave you security? For whom have you done this? Important to the shepherd’s ability to give security to the sheep is the fact that he was known and familiar to them. They recognised his voice. Does this resonate in any way with your experience? We are familiar with the image of Jesus as the shepherd. The image of Jesus as the door (or gate) is not so familiar but is one that merits attention. Jesus presents himself as the door through which we pass and find life. What are the doors through which you have passed and found life: a situation, a place, a book, an experience, a person? For whom have you been a door to a richer life? John Byrne OSA, Veritas

MUSINGS THOSE who are drawn by God’s voice and determined to follow Jesus soon discover within themselves an irrepressible desire to bring the Good News to their brothers and sisters through proclamation and the service of charity. All Christians are called to be missionaries of the Gospel! As disciples, we do not receive the gift of God’s love for our personal consolation, nor are we called to promote ourselves, or a business concern. We are simply men and women touched and transformed by the joy of God’s love, who cannot keep this experience just to ourselves. For “the Gospel joy which enlivens the community of disciples is a missionary joy (Evangelii Gaudium, 21),” Pope Francis – Message for Vocations Sunday 2017. The first big moment of vocation is baptism. The anointing of chrism at baptism might be called the anointing for vocation. The baptismal vocation is for witness, love and service. This is expressed in ways in which people live out their baptism in married life, single life – and within the single life, maybe religious life or priesthood. In a place of silence, let the words ‘Come, follow me’ echo in your mind and heart. Lord, be with me as I offer myself in partnership with you to work in your world. Donal Neary, SJ, Messenger Publications

THE GOOD SHEPHERD “THE Lord is my shepherd.” How often have we sung this Psalm or heard it read and repeated the response? Its words are so familiar that sometimes we might not even think about what we are saying or singing. But the image of Jesus as shepherd is worth reflecting on, especially on this Good Shepherd Sunday. Four years ago on Holy Thursday, Pope Francis caused a bit of a stir when he urged bishops and priests to get to know their flocks, and to be like shepherds who “smell of their sheep”: “This I ask you: be shepherds, with the “odour of the sheep”, make it real, as shepherds among your flock.” The vivid image captured the imagination of many who heard it. But in evoking the metaphor of shepherd, Pope Francis was echoing the language of the Gospel extract we hear today, when Jesus describes himself as the good shepherd who knows his sheep. Jesus tells us that sheep recognise the voice of their shepherd, and that is why they follow him. This kind of trust could only be gained by a shepherd who handles his sheep, feeds them, and protects them – to the extent that he smells like them. That’s how well Jesus knows us, and it is because of how intimately he knows us, how much he has sacrificed for us, and how well he cares for us, that we are able to love and follow him in return. Tríona Doherty, Veritas

Remember Denis Galvin down at Ross Castle in the 1960s? At the time you could climb the spiral staircase to the top of the castle to see the beautiful views. There was a charge and Denis was the ticket collector. PIC SUPPLIED BY MOMENTS IN TIME

Friends Of Maureen Kelliher Say Thank You OVER the past few months, the Friends of Maureen Kelliher have been fundraising to help to make life a little easier for Maureen and her four children for the future. The most recent event was the 70s/80s night in the Kerry Way. Many, many people have travelled this journey with us since January and we are exceedingly grateful for your response, support and generosity to this very worthy cause. We would like to thank the MS Society, the HSE, the local community and wider communities, local businesses, clubs, local media and politicians for their generous support. It is with their help that life has become easier for Maureen and her family to cope with the circumstances they have been faced with. Thank you all sincerely. Mental Health Awareness Month SUICIDE continues to be of huge concern in the county and Kerry has the second highest rate in the country. Raising positive mental health awareness and reducing stigma are seen as key in helping to address suicide and get people talking about their mental health. I would like to raise awareness of a new campaign called the Green Ribbon which will take place this May. The campaign, which is managed by See Change and funded by the HSE’s Mental Health Division, aims to promote open conversation about mental health and challenge the stigma of mental health problems. It is the main national activity taking place under action 1.3 of Connecting for Life (Ireland’s National strategy to reduce suicide), “To reduce stigmatising attitudes to mental health and

suicidal behaviour at population level and within priority groups.” The campaign will see 500,000 green ribbons distributed across the country through partnerships with organisations like Irish Rail and Boots. Organisations are encouraged to distribute green ribbons to staff (these are free of charge) and to hold a Green Ribbon event to promote positive mental health. You can read more about the campaign at www.greenribbon.ie Julieann Lane, Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention, HSE Community Services, Rathass, Tralee

EU Ruling on Restricted Planning Laws I AGREE with Councillor Donal Grady’s assertion that an EU ruling could affect planning laws. Actually in 2005 the Law Society of Ireland warned that local authorities discriminating in favour of family members over planning permissions for one-off rural housing were breaking the EU law and the law reform committee of the society informed the Department of the Environment that positive planning discrimination in some cases breached the Irish Constitution and EU laws. In 2007 the EU wrote to the Department of the Environment asking it to show how its “local needs” rules do not break several internal market rules and are not discriminatory and breached Articles 43 and 56 of the EU Treaty which guarantee freedom of establishment and the free movement of capital. In view of the current housing crisis in Ireland and Kerry it is timely that people in need of housing be allowed to move to the areas of their choice whether it be urban or rural. Fifty years ago young couples seeking to build their own homes could avail of a grant allocation from both the Department of the Environment and their local authority to assist them to build a home on their own site to their own particular requirements and possibly some consideration could be given to having this incentive restored and allow young couples to choose their residency whether it be urban or rural and one with suitable community facilities for their children. John Kelly, Irish Rural Dwellers Association, Coolcaslagh, Killarney Editor’s Note: If you have an opinion you would like to air, you can write to Letters to the Editor, Killarney Advertiser, Unit 1C Park Place, High Street, Killarney, or email newsdesk@ killarneyadvertiser.ie All letters must be accompanied by a name, address and phone number for verification purposes. 3RD ANNIVERSARY NAGLE

To my loving father John Nagle, Brendan’s Place Killarney, Who sadly passed away on the 10th May 2014. The world has many heroes, You’d know them most by name. They give there best at what they do, So they deserve their fame.

It does not take a special day, For us to think of you, Each mass we hear, Each prayer we say, Is offered up for you,

But among all the heroes t His world has ever had, There is not admired more than The one that I call Dad,

We cannot bring the old day back, When we were all together, Our family chain is broken now, But memories live forever.

Perhaps not like the other s, He doesn’t look for praise He’s heroic in his special way, in his thoughtful caring ways.

Sadly missed and always loved by Breeda, Marie, Annette, Denis and Trish, daughter-in-law, sons-in-law and grandchildren.

Perhaps he is not as famous As the other you would see. But he is everything and so much more that heroes ought to be.

Anniversary mass will take place on Thursday 11th May at 6.15pm in St.Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.

He keeps his word, he’s a good as gold,on this you can depend. He’s honest and he’s loyal too and he’s also a true friend.

JESUS

When I hear about a hero and the great things they have done, It remind me of my father, He is the greatest one.

May your Sacred Heart Lord Jesus, be praised, glorified and honoured throughout the whole world now and forever. Repeat this 3 times. M.H.

I love you Dad. Love and Miss you Always, Becks And Liam xx

Treasured memories of Mike Kissane, late of Mausrower, Gneeveguilla, who passed away on 5th May 2016. No one knew that morning, What sadness the day would bring, When a heart of gold stopped beating, And we could not do a thing, You never said goodbye to us, Perhaps it’s just as well, For we could not have said goodbye, To someone we loved so well.

Grace Notes Music Is A Universal Language Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley examines where classical music fits in our society

MANY of you may know that my background is in classical singing. Sometimes the mere mention of the word “classical” in relation to singing can send people running for the hills! There is a common notion that this type of performance is very highbrow and not all that accessible. While I was knee-deep in my music studies I found myself constantly defending my idiom to those who, in my eyes, didn’t understand the world of music I lived in. Since having some distance from that world I have had many mixed emotions and opinions on the classical world and where it fits in our society now. People like Katherine Jenkins and Andre Rieu may have a classical background but they are often shunned by those in the classical circle

as they can be seen as having ‘dumbed down’ their performances to make them more commonly appreciated. Now that I am standing back from the topic I ask, what is so wrong with making the classical style of music more accessible and loved by more of the general population? I am proud to call myself a classical-crossover singer because I have finally come to the realisation that this is where I am most comfortable and where I can express myself best. I think if performers of all styles, be it classical, pop, jazz, trad, or crossover, could find a deep appreciation for each other’s art we wouldn’t have so many divisions between ‘us and them’. We are all doing the same job. We are all trying to evoke emotion and connect with our audience. I think we can all learn a great deal from each other. Music is a universal language and while we all have our opinions on what is the “best” type of music, we must respect all disciplines. Classical music is my background and I will always be an advocate for it and for all music. • Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

New-Look Legion Dig Out Big Win In Dingle The Legion team who defeated Dingle on Sunday. Back: Rob Leen, Jamie O’Sullivan, Seán McCarthy, Gavin Moriarty, KJ Griffin, Alan Moriarty, Donal Lyne, Danny Sheahan, Jack O’Neill, Denis Sheahan, Conor Culloty, Shaun Keane, Mike Cronin, Tom Moriarty and Conor Keane. Front: Ciarán Lyne, David Gleeson, Finbarr Murphy, Darragh O’Doherty, Billy McGuire, Chris Davies, Brian Kelly, Cathal Sheahan, James O’Donoghue, Jonathan Lyne and Aidan Slattery.

It’s early days but Alan O’Neill’s side are clearly playing with confidence, writes Adam Moynihan Club Championship (Quarter Final Replay) Dingle 1-11 Legion 1-12 LEGION travelled west on Sunday and secured their passage to the semi-finals of the Club Championship with a hard-fought win over Dingle. They also came home safe in the knowledge that their senior status would be guaranteed for another year at least, although, judging by their performance in this particular game, their ambitions for 2017 will be far loftier than that. In 2016, an opening day defeat to 13-man Dingle set the tone for what was a thoroughly disappointing campaign, in the end managing just three wins in seventeen attempts. This year, they’ve now won four and drawn one of their opening five games. It’s a remarkable turnaround, especially when you consider the player turnover from last year. New manager Alan O’Neill is without the services of the hugely influential Podge O’Connor (emigrated), centre back Damien O’Sullivan (suspended) and more recently key forward Jamie O’Sullivan (injured). Add to that the loss of some fringe players and you’d be forgiven for thinking that Legion might be light on able bodies this season, but that certainly doesn’t seem to be the case. With Tom Moriarty also out of commission last weekend, O’Neill handed youngsters Finbarr Murphy and Conor Culloty their first championship starts in the forward division and the two combined to devastating effect in the seventh minute.

The sides were level at three points apiece when Jack O’Neill, who was absolutely outstanding throughout, picked out Murphy with a precise pass. Murphy, in turn, teed up Culloty who showed excellent composure to settle himself before firing accurately to the corner of the net. As was the case in the drawn game, the first quarter of this one was very open with no shortage of freeflowing, attacking football. Legion looked particularly vulnerable at the back where two of the Geaneys, Conor and Paul, were typically troublesome. Jonathan Lyne was deployed as an extra man in front of Paul which worked quite well in general, but Conor was proving especially difficult to pin down. He kicked three points in the first ten minutes but some fine scores from Denis Sheahan, Billy McGuire, Conor Keane and James O’Donoghue, in addition to some improvements on the defensive end, kept Legion’s noses ahead at the break, 0- 8 to 1-7. Tomás Sheehy cut the lead to one with the first point of the second period before three-in-a-row from Donal Lyne, O’Donoghue (free) and Finbarr Murphy had Legion 0-9 to 1-10 to the good with fifteen minutes to play. With a sweeping, cross-field wind making point kicking difficult for both sides, you felt that Dingle might need a goal and they got it when Paul Geaney pounced on a loose ball to slot beyond Brian Kelly and close the gap to just one. This was a potentially nervous time for Legion but Conor Keane stepped up and responded with possibly the score of the game. Keane has a flair for the unorthodox and as he was running across the

pitch, ball in hand, about 25 yards out and under pressure from his marker, he unexpectedly prodded a low shot goalwards with the outside of his right foot. It was a bizarre effort but it somehow landed just over the black spot. Dingle battled back again, however, and points from Matthew Flaherty and Paul Geaney had them level with nine minutes to play. It was Keane who got the game’s decisive score with five minutes still on the clock when he intercepted a short kick out, raced in and opted to pop over a point when a goal was probably on as well. It turned out to be the right decision. Dingle pressed manfully for a late equaliser and appeared to have won a handy free when Paul Geaney went down under pressure from Danny Sheahan 21 yards out in the middle of the goal. The referee had other ideas and, to the dismay of the home crowed, he swiftly booked Geaney for diving. My understanding is that Sheahan accidentally clipped Geaney’s ankles and the ref got the wrong idea. Either way it was a big break for the visitors who held out for a momentous victory. It’s still very early in the season, of course, but so far the signs are good for this new-look Legion side. Next up is a semi-final against Kenmare Shamrocks in the Park on Sunday. Throw-in is 2.30pm. Dingle scorers: Paul Geaney (1-3), Conor Geaney (04, 1f), Tomás Sheehy (0-2), Tom O’Sullivan (0-1) and Matthew Flaherty (0-1). Legion scorers: James O’Donoghue (0-3, 1f), Conor Keane (0-3), Conor Culloty (1-0), Denis Sheahan (02), Donal Lyne (0-2), Billy McGuire (0-1) and Finbarr Murphy (0-1).

Kerry Club Championship Roundup Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald Dr Crokes 1-15 Rathmore 1-10 DR CROKES qualified for their sixth consecutive Kerry senior club football championship at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last where they defeated Rathmore with five points to spare. When they last met Crokes had to give way to Rathmore and the omens looked good for Rathmore early in this game. Playing in to the teeth of a very strong breeze to the dressing room they immediately scored a point from the throw in. Within two minutes they stretched that lead to 1-1. Paul Murphy was the goal scorer. Crokes could not get near the ball in the first five minutes until up popped Jordan Kiely to score one valuable settling point. Shane Ryan scored a point from a free to make it 1-2 to 0-I. Crokes used all their vast experience to settle down and they had points from Colm Cooper (2) and Kiely again. Shane Ryan hit a wonderful 45 to keep them in front. Daithí Casey was playing a captain’s role at midfield and scored a point followed by a point from a free by Colm Cooper. Brian Looney levelled the scoring with his point 0-6 to 1-3. Points by Ambrose O’Donovan and Colm Cooper made it 0-8 to 1-3. Rathmore clawed one back but Crokes were ahead from then onwards. Rathmore trailed by five points to 1-5 at the interval. SECOND HALF Rathmore were in a strong enough position at the restart aided by that strong downfield gale. Crokes brought in David Shaw for Michael Milner and Kieran O’Leary for Gavin O’Shea and they took the initiative. Two early points by Gooch and another point from the very impressive Jordan Kiely made it 13 points to 1-5. The game was decided in the next 10 minutes. Rathmore kicked four wides and Jordan Kiely was fouled in the square in the 40th minute. Team captain Daithí Casey blasted a great penalty shot past Kenneth O’Keeffe to put clear daylight between the sides 1-13 to 1-5. A point by Mark Reen and a great save by Shane Murphy from John Moynihan’s goal bound shot was all they could muster. Murphy deflected Moynihan’s shot for goal over the bar. It was 1-13 to 1-8 at this point but Crokes succeeded in denying the potent Rathmore full forward line of Shane Ryan, Eoin Lawlor and John Moynihan of possession Good work here by Michael Moloney, Alan O’Sullivan and Gavin White. The latter nullified the pre-match threat of Paul Murphy. The final winning margin for Crokes was 1-15 to 1-10. Word was coming through at half time from Dingle where the home side were neck and neck with the Legion leading 1-7 to 0-8. Conor Culloty scored the goal. Remember this was a replay. The sides could not be separated on the previous

The final winning margin for Crokes was 1-15 to 1-10

Sunday and home advantage installed Dingle as favourites, but Legion’s good form in division 2 of the county league was carried through. Paul Geaney levelled the scoring in the 44th minute when he scored Dingle’s goal. Now it was 1-9 for each side. It was nip and tuck in that final quarter.

With time running out Paul Geaney landed an equalising point, but Legion had the last say when up popped Conor Keane to snatch victory with a great point. Legion will now meet Kenmare Shamrocks and the winners will meet Dr Crokes in the senior club final. INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Castleisland Desmonds 2-12 St. Mary’s 4-10 Castleisland Desmonds visited Con Keating Park on Sunday 30th April for Round 2 of the Castleisland Co-Op Mart Intermediate championship. The last time these teams clashed, it made for one of the best games of the 2015 Intermediate Championship. Both teams were missing key players, St Mary’s Denis Daly and Castleisland Maurice Hickey. The day was dry, but a strong wind prevailed throughout. The visitors were fast off the mark with two points within the first five minutes. Sean Cournane had his goal chance blocked in the fifth minute, but was rewarded a few minutes later when he did rattle the back of the net. Castleisland proceeded to score 1-04 without reply, before Anthony Cournane scored St Mary’s first point in the 23rd minute. For the rest of the half, Castleisland remained dominant. However, a free from Bryan Sheehan and an injury time goal from Darren Casey were all that St Mary’s could muster. Half time score was 2-02 to 2-08. St Mary’s added two further goals in the second half. Paul O’Donoghue was fast off the mark in the opening minutes of the second half with two points from play, before Bryan Sheehan hit the back of the net. Castleisland were at a disadvantage, when centre forward Tomás Lynch saw his second yellow card. St Mary’s used this to their advantage and won easily. Templenoe 1-10, Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-11 Templenoe emerged victorious after a hard fought win over Glenbeigh/Glencar in the second round of the Castleisland Co-Op Mart County Intermediate Football Championship. The match was played on a poor day for football, with a blustery wind

and a wet pitch and with the rain just about holding off for the hour of football. The visitors opened the scoring when Gavin O’Grady pointed from a free, but Templenoe were playing the better football in the first half and a Killian Spillane point was quickly followed by a Brian Crowley goal. Some good work from Stephen O’Sullivan saw the ball passed across the Glenbeigh/Glencar goalmouth for Brian Crowley to palm to the net. Templenoe continued to play with a good tempo, and despite some poor wides, they kicked the following four points from Brian Crowley, Killian Spillane, Pat Spillane and Gavin Crowley. Pat Spillane’s point was the pick of the bunch, when he kicked a great long-range point from out near the stand sideline. On the 17th minute, Gavin O’Grady kicked another pointed free for Glenbeigh/Glencar and Tommy Cahill followed up soon after with their first point from play. Killian Spillane responded with a pointed free, and the last two scores of the half were kicked by Brian Crowley and Adrian Spillane to leave a half time score Templenoe 1-08, Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-03. In the second half Templenoe received two black cards in quick succession, when both John Rice and Teddy Doyle were sent to the line. Gavin O’Grady pointed another free, and Kieran Courtney soon followed up with a point from play to reduce the arrears to four points for the visiting team. A further Glenbeigh/Glencar attack saw Darran O’Sullivan in possession and driving at the Templenoe defence, but he was fouled just outside the square. Gavin O’Grady pointed the resulting free. Time was running out for the visitors, but Glenbeigh/Glencar kept pressurizing, and a Templenoe move trying to pass the ball across their own goal saw the ball spilled and narrowly toe-poked wide. Another pointed free for Glenbeigh/Glencar reduced the deficit to two points, but time was fast running out for the Mid Kerry men and Templenoe held on to advance to the County Intermediate Semi Final on a score of Templenoe 1-10, Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-11.

Boyle Win Twitter, Killarney Celtic Win Football Game FAI Cup (Qualifying Round) Killarney Celtic 1-0 Boyle Celtic KILLARNEY CELTIC are through to the FAI Cup for the first time in their history following a well-deserved 1-0 win over Boyle Celtic of Roscommon on Saturday night. It’s a serious achievement for the Killarney club, which makes it all the more unfortunate that the game earned national media attention for more trivial reasons. Sportsjoe.ie picked up on Boyle’s live Twitter feed from the game, which the popular website fairly generously described as “one of the great Twitter reports”. In a series of testy tweets, the Boyle account railed against the officials, the elements and alleged cynical play on the part of the home side. The tone was in keeping with complaints the Roscommon club had previously made about the timing of the fixture, specifically that the 7pm kickoff would discourage away fans from making the 300km trip south. In their defence, the refereeing decision which really got them riled up was fairly shocking. Trailing 1-0 well into the second half, a Celtic player played the ball back towards his own goal directly into the path of a Boyle attacker. Had play continued, the visitors would have been in behind the Celtic defence with a great chance of scoring. To their dismay, the linesman raised his flag for offside. Obviously the Boyle player couldn’t have been offside if the ball came off a Celtic player. What actually happened was that the linesman in

Words: Adam Moynihan question was in conversation with the Boyle right back on the opposite side and looked across just in time to see the ball rolling through to the attacker. He incorrectly assumed a Boyle player had made the pass and flagged for offside. Farcical but true. With regards to the other complaints, both teams had to deal with the wind, which was strong but not quite the “hurricane” they described. And if Boyle were leading 1-0 at home with a place in the FAI Cup at stake, would they be rushing to get footballs back onto the field?

These were all minor gripes really and most of the comments were made tongue in cheek, but they probably took it a bit too far when they called the locals “yokels”. Not to put too fine a point on it but I think it’s a bit rich for someone from Boyle, Co Roscommon population 5,110 and home of the UFO Society of Ireland - to call someone from Killarney a “yokel”. On the field, Celtic will be delighted that their tried and tested game plan of keeping things compact

in big matches worked to perfection. Boyle had some really good technical players and put together some nice one-and-two-touch moves but, when it came down to it, the central defensive pairing of Jamie Spillane and John McDonagh were resolute as always. With the protective shield of Gary Keane and Pa McGrath in front of them, Boyle struggled to create any meaningful chances and Celtic deservedly took the lead in the 21st minute when McGrath headed home an in-swinging Matt Keane corner. McDonagh hit the bar with a vicious 40-yard freekick ten minutes later and Matt Keane was unlucky to see his effort cleared off the line just before the break. It was well into the second half before Boyle troubled the Celtic goal, Roy Kelliher pulling off two quality saves in quick succession to preserve his side’s lead. The game finished 10 v 10 as a Boyle player picked up his second yellow (apparently for dissent, although it was unclear what had actually happened) in the 75th minute and McDonagh got a straight red for a wild challenge in the last minute of normal time. It was a crunching tackle and worthy of a red but I don’t think he was trying to do what he did; I doubt he’d risk being suspended for the biggest game in the club’s history for a tackle on the half-way line. Celtic now eagerly await the draw for the first round proper where they’ll naturally be hoping for a home tie against League of Ireland opposition. Celtic: Kelliher; O’Leary, McDonagh, Spillane, Falvey; G Keane, McGrath; Sparling, M Keane, P McCarthy; O’Shea. Subs: S McCarthy, Brady.

smalltalk

St Paul’s guard Philip O’Connor talks to Adam Moynihan about recovering from injury, his favourite sporting moments and getting his feelings hurt by Shane Horgan

Hi Flip. Thanks for talking to us. No problem, Ad.

the Cougars but that was only a hiatus until St Paul’s got back together.

You were injured recently. How’s the recovery going?

What’s your proudest sporting moment?

Pretty much recovered now. It happened back in October. I tore cartilage in the same knee I tore my cruciate before. I took my time with so it’ll hopefully be right for next season.

How did last season go with St Paul’s?

It went okay. We lost to Neptune, who are a good side, in the Intermediate Cup. Things kind of petered out in the league after that. Not the best year but not the worst either.

A few questions about your teammates… Who would you least like to get stuck in a lift with?

Easy one: Shane Horgan. He’d blame me for everything. It’d all be my fault.

Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder?

Most of our team are probably a bit old for Tinder so I’d have to give it to one of the young fellas. Maybe Mark O’Shea or Paul Clarke. I don’t know much about their Tinder game but they’d have to be better than all the old fogies.

I already know the answer, but who’s the biggest moaner? Definitely Shane Horgan again. No doubt there.

Never happy.

He’s just never happy. Always giving out from start to finish.

Who’s the worst-dressed?

I’ll have to go back to my underage days for this. We had a guy called Gary Coffey playing with us and he literally had every sweatband and headband and sleeve known to man, before any of us had ever seen them before.

And was he any good?

Yeah he was but you’d think he was in the NBA with all the gear!

Who spends the most time in the gym?

It’s between two really. The U-16 Schools All-Ireland in basketball. A lot of effort went into that team. And winning the Corn Uí Mhuirí final in 2008. We lost two finals before that so it was nice to win one.

And the most embarrassing?

There are two. I scored an own-basket in a schools game once. I forgot which way we were facing when the ball was thrown up after half time. So that wasn’t good! We played a minor friendly as well against Legion and the ball came in between me and Conor Healy. Conor won the race and did a Zidane turn before chipping the ball up and giving a Ric Flair “Woo!” as he ran off.

That is really embarrassing! If you had to compare yourself to an NBA player, who would it be? Derrick Rose. Always injured.

What are your five favourite sports in order? Basketball, football, soccer, golf and hurling.

Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at?

I don’t think I’d be good at hurling but I’d like to give it a go.

What’s the best sporting moment of all time? Agüero’s goal to win the league in 2012.

Do you have any nicknames? Flip or Lip.

I have to go back to the old days for this again and say Kevin O’Regan. He’s running the barbershop next to the Tatler there now. He’s a bit of a unit!

Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without?

If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for St Paul’s next season, who would it be?

Who’s the top man for the banter in the WhatsApp groups?

Cormac O’Donoghue. He was an Irish international and he could just do everything. Of the players I remember seeing, he was the one I’d most like to play with.

Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with?

WhatsApp. It’s pretty much used for everything now.

Shane Horgan tries, definitely. I think he hurts a few people’s feelings. He has certainly hurt mine a few times!

What’s your most-used emoji?

Mark Green. Crazy talented. He could score from anywhere. Just a really good player.

If you had to change clubs, where would you go?

Well, there’s only one other basketball club in Killarney! There was a year we didn’t have a team so I had to play with

Which three players from Ecuador have Premier League goals or assists this season?

Absolutely nothing. I can’t hold a tune at all.

Who’s the most famous person in your phone?

I actually have David Wallace’s number through work. I only needed it once. Still haven’t deleted it.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

When I was in school I had a shaved head and people called me ‘Scofield’ because of the guy from Prison Break, so Wentworth Miller!

I’m really disappointed no one is saying Jack O’Connell. Can you tell me a joke?

Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with?

That’s Mark Green again. He could jump out of the gym. A supreme athlete. He’d take off from the free-throw line and find a way to score.

Munster’s season is back Words: Liam Murphy on track! After defeat in the semi-final of the European Cup against Saracens at the Aviva two weeks ago, Munster were looking to finish the season with a flourish and push on for the home Semi-final in the PRO 12, when they took on Treviso in Italy last weekend. Having only lost three matches in the PRO 12 this season, Munster were sitting in second position ahead of the trip and a win would guarantee the next big game takes place at Thomond Park. In the end, maximum points were secured with a brace from Darren Sweetnam and tries from Simon Zebo, Alex Wootton and Jack O’Donoghue. Bleyendaal made three conversions from the boot. All eyes now turn to Thomond Park on Saturday the 20th of May as Munster take on Scarletts – one of the only teams to beat Munster this season. What a season this has been for the

men in red. Let’s hope they continue the run with a win in two weeks’ time! Closer to home, Killarney RFC Minis finished up our season last Saturday with a final training session, medal/trophy presentation and party at Aghadoe. Thankfully, the rain held off and Aghadoe was absolutely buzzing as over 100 children received medals, watched by their proud coaches and parents and had great fun. It has really been a fantastic season for the kids as they took part in blitzes right across the county, took trips to Thomond Park and to Cork to play Sunday’s Well. I have been reliably informed that the U12’s will never forget the tour of Collins Barrack’s in Cork! Also our U11’s played a match at half time at Thomond Park in the European Cup quarter-final. These occasions are a joy to behold and it is great to watch the kids train hard for these matches and play in front of their parents, peers and rugby fans. A huge thanks must go to the coaches who strive to make training fun and promote a love of rugby in the next generation. Well done to all involved!

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP REPLAY Dingle 1-11 Killarney Legion 1-12 While most people thought that a Legion win here in Dingle was a longshot the seniors certainly took an altogether different view of matters as they turned in another fine team performance. Built on a defence that was determined and aggressive - and they needed to be - the game swung from end to end. The opening quarter saw the sides swop score for score to leave it at 3pts.each when man of the match Jack O Neill turned over a Dingle ball and found Conor Culloty with a pinpoint foot pass and he cooly placed his shot to the net. The home side were stung into a response and a series of points saw the Legion go in at the break leading on a 1-7 to 8pts. scoreline.Nobody In the fine crowd doubted that this game would go down to the wire and so it transpired as the exchanges intensified. James O Donoghue’s movement dragged the Dingle backs out of position regularly thus opening the way for the other forwards who weren’t shirking from hard graft as they kept up the pressure on the Dingle backs. Having slipped into a 4pt.lead the Legion seemed to have made a decisive break but with 15 mins.left on the clock Dingle took advantage of a rare defensive mix up and duly punished it with a goal to leave the minimum in it.However Conor Keane produced a sublime point as he cut the ball with the outside of his boot whilst going away from goal to steady the ship. Dingle pushed hard and narrowed the gap to a single point but it was noticeable that they found it hard to overcome a resolute Legion rearguard and with their talisman Paul Geaney well marshalled by Danny Sheehan the clock ticked towards full time as both sides swopped points and with the clock just marking the third minute of injury time the final whistle blew to be greeted by loud cheers and immense satisfaction by the big and vocal Legion support that made the trip to Daingean Uí Chúis which was much appreciated by the management and team. Mother Nature dictated that fishing would play second fiddle to strong South East winds on Sunday last and in advance of the weather warning , we postponed the Batty O Brien Memorial Cup Competition . We will announce a new date in due course . For now we wish tight lines to our competitors taking part in the Munster Lake Competition this coming Sunday and hope that they will be able to take to the water and not fall foul of the weather ! As the angling season develops , unfortunately not all the stories coming from anglers are about a good catch - a number of anglers are reporting findings or sightings of rubbish being dumped on shores, banks and even being weighed down in bags in rivers ! . A reminder to all that the Kerry County Council Litter Hotline is 1800 326228 .Given that more anglers are now out and about on the water, it may well be that dumping will be spotted that is not visible from roadways etc and thus council officials may well not be aware of same. The Waters and Communities Office are hosting public meetings to discuss the natural waters of county Kerry over the coming weeks. Bláithín Ní Ainín Community Water Officer for Kerry will present information on the latest draft River Basin Management Plan for Ireland 2018 - 2021 along with details on how you can have a say. There will be discussion on local interests such as: water quality, angling, heritage, biodiversity, amenity use or issues affecting your local waterways. This is an opportunity to share your knowledge of your local waterways. Killarney meeting is taking place at

Revised dressing room/side-line guidelines: Please note that under age players are not permitted inside the dressing rooms prior to or after a senior game or inside the surrounding fence wire when a senior game is ongoing. This is to protect all parties involved. We ask parents and guardians to continually remind their children of this rule which will be strictly enforced. We appreciate your on- going support and cooperation.

Results FAI Senior Cup: Killarney Celtic 1 Boyle Rovers 0 Killarney Celtic have been thirsting for days like this ever since our inception 41 years ago. We have always tried to compete at all grades and last Saturday in an absolutely immaculate Celtic Park (thanks as always are due to Packie, Joe, and all their fantastic helpers as well as our unstinting Fás Staff), and again we had a massive crowd to get behind the team on their way to making history (thanks again to each and every one of you, and to the friendly and sporting Boyle supporters as well). Celtic made the better start and midway through the first half Pa McGrath got a bullet header onto a pinpoint Matt Keane corner to send Celtic Park into raptures. The job wasn’t done yet though, Brian, Eoghan, David, and all the players are around far too long to be caught that way, and it turned into a real adrenaline surge of a battle, both teams giving it everything in a great display of soccer – but Boyle couldn’t pull it back and Celtic go into the draw for the Senior Cup. I’ll allow fate to tempt on such a day – Cork City, Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers....any and all of ye are welcome to Celtic Park, and we’ll have the kettle on and sandwiches ready. Jimmy Falvey Youth Cup Replay: St. Brendans Park 1 Killarney Celtic 0 It was never going to take much to break the deadlock between two top quality sides who know each other so well – they have been rivals for titles all up along the way. On this occasion it was Park who made the breakthrough; fair play to them and we wish them well in the final. U15 Premier: St. Brendans Park 0 Killarney Celtic 3. Castleisland Mart Senior Club Championship

Our senior team travelled to Rathmore on Wednesday last and took part in an epic struggle with the hosts but unfortunately finished up losing by a single point. We were blitzed by a rampant Rathmore in the first twelve minutes and found ourselves trailing by 11 points after 15 mins. However the second quarter saw us take a grip at midfield and score some excellent points to finish the half trailing by 2-11 to 0-11. After a shaky first few minutes of the second half when Rathmore missed a couple of good chances we regained control and edged closer to the opposition as the half progressed. A well taken penalty by Kieran Murphy and an inspirational point by Philip Casey saw us draw level with minutes remaining but with extra time looming Rathmore raided once more and kicked over the winning score. There was heartbreak at the final whistle for our players, mentors and supporters but little consolation in their heroic efforts. We now face Dingle in a relegation battle on Sunday next @ 2pm in a venue as of yet to be decided.

GAA Golf Classic

Our annual fundraiser was a tremendous success on Saturday last in Killarney Golf Club. A course in excellent condition, a large number of teams and a great atmosphere made this an enjoyable occasion. We are greatly indebted to our many sponsors of teams and tee boxes, a hard working committee, Kilcummin Post Office and Rural Development Office Staff and our many loyal supporters who rallied to the call once again. This year we were lucky to have the sponsorship of a Kilcummin /Australian link which raised enough money abroad to pay for the course on the day. Anthony, Patrick and Killian O’Sullivan, sons of Paddy, Ballinamanagh, Kieran Lynch, Ronan O’Connor, Kevin McSweeney, Anthony O’Sullivan (Ulick) Inchicullane, Rosco Daley, David Healy and Sean O’Connor (Dunrine) are all living in Australia and were happy to support their home club. Winners on the day were a Jimmy O’Briens bar with a score of 61pts represented by Peter O’ Brien (9), Stephen Loughnane (18) and Michael Lynch (18). Team and tee boxes will appear on our website in the coming weeks.

U11 Castleisland v Mastergeeha. The boys had two games away in Castleisland on Saturday afternoon. All did well with John Hughes, Barry Collins, and Adam Whitty getting the goals.

U12 Mastergeeha 2 Listowel 2. In the close game the boys were two down at the start of the second half despite being the better side. After this Mastergeeha pushed forward and got a goal back when Alan O’Leary scored following a corner. With five minutes remaining Mastergeeha equalised when Sean Doolan finished well. In the closing stage Mastergeeha were unlucky not to get all three points when Eoin Kelly had a shot hit the cross bar. DIV 1B Mastergeeha 2 Windmill 1. In this game Mastergeeha got off to a great start with Carlo scoring after 10 minutes. However early in the second half the visitors equalised. In the final part of the game Mastergeeha pushed forward with Padraig Doyle getting the winner in the closing stages. U12 Kerry Community Games. Mastergeeha hosted the U12 soccer finals of community games on last Sunday. With a large number of games played on the Kilcummin were unlucky not to get a medal and showed great spirit throughout. East Kerry Junior League The last league round of games in the East Kerry Junior league, sponsored by Kerry Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Centre, Killarney, were played during the week. Rathmore went through to the division 1 league final against old rivals Dr Crokes, after coming out on top by a point against neighbours Gneeveguilla. Three goals were scored by the mid fielders in the first five minutes of the game and Gneeveguilla scored a late goal from Padraig O’Sullivan to leave one point between the sides at the end. Donnchadh McCarthy was a dominant figure throughout and scored into the top corner to put Rathmore ahead in the first minute. The evergreen Michael S Murphy replied after three minutes for Gneeveguilla. Tommy Sheahan got in on the act on the fifth minute and claimed a major for himself and Rathmore. Gneeveguilla dominated with the stiff wind for the remainder of the half kicking eight points to three from Rathmore. Michael S Murphy was most prominent with Jamie Brosnan and Damien O’Sullivan kicking good scores. The McCarthy cousins Donnacadh and Patrick were to the fore for Rathmore. Gneeveguilla were ahead at the break 1-9 to 2-3 In the second half Rathmore had the conditions (a strong sun, stiff breeze and a heavy hailstone shower) and with scores from Denis and Patrick McCarthy. In the fifth minute Donnacadh McCarthy had his second goal. However Philip Cremin scored a goal for Gneeveguilla on the sixteenth minute to leave a goal between the sides, Rathmore leading 3-10 to 1-10. Rathmore followed up with an additional four points while Gneeveguilla

05.05.17 claimed three points. The goal from O’Sullivan came late but Gneeveguilla did have a few chances to equalise the game in a frantic few minutes of injury time. 05.05.17 evening the A team, who were missing 4 regular starters, had a tough game with the hosts leading at half time despite some good play from the Fossa boys. Sam Buckley and Rocco Sheehan put in a great effort in midfield while Cian Myers was strong in defence. Ted Gorman kept the Fossa scoreboard ticking over and but for a few unfortunate goal opportunities being missed Fossa could have been right back into this game. However it would be fair to say that Ballymac were good value for their win. Scorers for Fossa on the night were Ted Gorman with 1-4, Rocco Sheehan with 1 -2, Aarron Coffey with a goal with Phillip Lyons and Scott Carlton contributing a point each. Final score Ballymac 4-12, Fossa 3-8. Next up for the U12 squad is the last game of phase 1 in the county league at home to Milltown/Castlemaine next Sunday the 7th at 6pm. Dr Crokes Club

Senior Club Championship Semi Final Played in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday 30th of April. Dr Crokes 1-15 Rathmore 1-10 Our opponents got a dream start with a goal and a point without reply in the first two minutes. With the strong wind at our backs we rallied with five points to Rathmore’s one by the end of the first quarter. This left the teams on level terms at this stage. We had three points in the first five minutes of the second quarter but our opponents also kept the scoreboard busy in the last ten minutes of this second fifteen minutes with two points to draw level. We had the last two points before the end of the first half for a half time lead of 0-10 to 1-5. A feature of this half were the two 45’s scored by Shane Ryan and Shane Murphy. It didn’t look likely that the two point lead we had would be sufficient to get us over the line as we had to face the strong wind in the second half. We had a great first ten minutes in the third quarter, sending over 1-3 without reply. The goal came from a well taken penalty by Daithi Casey. Rathmore got a grip on the game for the next
