Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

Why would someone fling litter around a grave? WHEN someone is visiting the grave of a loved one the last thing they want to see is litter strewn nearby – least of all on the grave itself. But that was the distressing scenario faced by Killarney woman Maria Klausner when she went to Aghadoe graveyard to tend to the resting place of her husband Albert during the week. “It is so disrespectful. There was rubbish everywhere,” Maria said. Dumping of rubbish at the graveyard is an ongoing problem, with bin charges set to make the situation worse, mourners fear. “All the rubbish is disgusting and disgraceful. People have no respect for the living, never mind the dead,” said Maria. Visitors to the graveyard encounter everything from shoes to household goods dumped there. Maria said it was particularly upsetting because her late husband had a

Litter louts have no respect for the living, never mind the dead passion for maintaining the environment in pristine condition. “My husband was born in Austria but he loved Kerry and Ireland was home to him. It would have upset him to see all the rubbish,” she said. “I was extremely upset. I try to keep the grave looking well and go up there every day.”

Maria promptly rang Kerry County Council on the matter. “I am not one to complain but out of respect for my husband I felt I had to,” she said. “I can’t understand such disrespect. I and other people have picked up rubbish from around graves so many times, not only household goods, but all kinds of rubbish.” When Killarney Advertiser contacted Kerry County Council on the matter, it stated: “There has been a skip at that location for some time to cater for litter generated in the graveyard. Kerry County Council is aware of some issues arising and is currently in discussions with the local voluntary graveyard committee to try to reach a more effective solution.” The question remains: How could even the most heartless of litter louts use a graveyard to dump their rubbish?

Tourism

Turning The Focus On Accessible Tourism IN JANUARY, Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Paul O’Neill told Killarney Advertiser how a priority of his term in office would entail making Killarney accessible to all. This community-wide aspiration is gathering momentum, with Killarney man Paudie Healy being elected to the European Board of Directors of the European Network for Accessible Tourism on Friday. Mr Healy, of Universal Access, Ireland, aid he was delighted to be elected to the 11-member board and thanked all the countries that voted for him. “I look forward to contributing to the ongoing development of tourism for all and especially to the development and rollout of the first global accreditation programme for tourism

service providers by the European Network for Accessible Tourism and also to contributing to the European organisation’s growth and expansion strategy globally.” Mr Healy, pictured, will play a key part n the new four-year strategy on the development of the European organisation globally. Mr Healy said he was delighted to be elected to the 11-member European Board of Directors and thanked all the countries that voted for him. The mission of the European Network for Accessible Tourism is to make European tourism destinations, products and services accessible to all travellers and to promote accessible tourism around the world.

M&S Volunteers Take On Rhododendron Challenge EARLIER this year, Killarney Advertiser turned a spotlight on the scourge of rhododendron in Killarney National Park. It’s an issue that has sparked concern and breast-beating for decades. Of course, action speaks louder than words and it was refreshing this week to see a group of colleagues from Marks & Spencer, Killarney, join forces to try to help address the problem as part of a workplace initiative. These volunteers donned their overalls and headed for Killarney National Park as part of the store’s Make it Matter plan, which aims to support communities across Ireland and the UK and help people live happier, healthier lives. The M&S Killarney team signed up for the Mountain Meitheal, which undertakes projects to protect and conserve mountain and forest areas in Ireland. To begin, four different M&S Killarney

staff members over the course of a week volunteered their time to remove rhododendron pods encroaching on other native plants thus killing flowers, helping to maintain sites throughout Killarney National Park. Tim Cahalane, Rhododendron Eradica-

tion Programme Manager at Killarney National Park, said: “Killarney National Park runs a year-round conservation maintenance programme preventing the highly invasive rhododendron ponticum from becoming re-established on important woodland and moorland habitats. Volunteers play a vital role in this project and we would like to thank the staff from Marks & Spencer for choosing to pledge their volunteer hours to this important task.” In addition to this, over 10 staff from M&S Killarney dedicated their time to paint and redecorate Fossa Community Centre. Paul Daly, store manager at M&S Killarney, said: “We believe that lots of the small actions from lots of people can collectively have a huge impact on a community. Our park is our national heritage and we are committed to ensuring its standards remain high.”

Sign Of The Times? WHERE there’s muck there’s brass, they say. But could the €50 note found wafting along East Avenue Road by an early morning litter-picker be a sign that good times are well and truly here? It definitely caused a talking point among the 12 Killarney Tidy Towns volunteers who were out bright and early on Sunday and Monday to clean up after the bumper weekend celebrations. The consensus was that it was the biggest sum found to date during a clean-up. Meanwhile, a group of vintners joined forces for the third year in a row to pay for street cleaning on Munster final day. Publicans and hoteliers on College Street hired a professional cleaning company to ensure litter picking remained constant in the area on Sunday. “It would be great to see this initiative replicated by other businesses in other parts of the town as we are all benefiting hugely from the influx of supporters,” said a spokesperson for Killarney Tidy Towns. “We would also like to pay a huge tribute to the council staff who were out over the weekend working tirelessly to remove enormous quantities of litter from our town.”

The Eyeporium Lash, Brow & Beauty Bar AT THE Eyeporium Lash, Brow & Beauty Bar, owner Josie McCannon specialises in eye beauty treatments, such as lash extensions, lash lifts, HD Brows, Eyeporium Signature Brows and regular eyebrow shaping and tinting. The Eyeporium also specialises in the hottest eyebrow treatment at the moment, microblading semi-permanent brows with world-renowned brand Phibrows. “I work closely with my clients to bring their brows back to full health due to over-plucking, ageing or health issues such as chemotherapy, hypothyroidism, alopecia, dermatitis and post-pregnancy hormone imbalances,” said Josie. “My brow rejuvenation treatments are very popular and successful with many women travelling from neighbouring counties for my services.” The importance of eyebrows to your face is paramount it’s all down to symmetry, says Josie. “We as humans are attracted to symmetry. Take celebrities,

for example; we find them very attractive. But it’s not always because they have a fine head of hair or their eyes have a cheeky twinkle; it’s often down to their face symmetry. If you were to draw a line down the centre of their faces, both sides would be almost identical,” said Josie. “But even if you have not been blessed with a mirror face, there is a way to fake it. When you have perfectly symmetrical eyebrows, your face looks more symmetrical. That is just some of the magic in perfect eyebrows and why I love them so so much. Sometimes, brows can be uneven naturally, and that is why we are beginning to see a rise in the semi-permanent methods.” Celebrities like Pippa O’Connor and

Michelle Keegan are choosing Phibrows, a microblading technique that lasts 12-18 months. “I was the first Phibrows artist to be certified in Kerry and I am constantly upskilling and training to give my customers the best treatments on the market. This treatment costs €259 and is a lifetime investment.” Josie offers this treatment completely free of charge to cancer survivors whose eyebrows have been affected by chemotherapy and radiation. “If any readers know of anyone who could avail of this please do not hesitate in contacting me. At the moment there is awaiting list fir this but all people eligible will be looked after,” said Josie. The Eyeporium also offers spray tan-

Hoop Dreams For Killarney

Basketball Legend Shane Battier Enjoys Killarney Visit

KILLARNEY is set to shoot for the skies as National League Basketball returns to town. It has been nine years since St Paul’s Basketball Club last featured in the league and the club and town are pulling out all the stops to place Killarney firmly on the map as Ireland’s premier basketball town. St Paul’s is now seeking support from the local business community to help finance the team. “We will be seeking sponsorship over the next month to help with the running costs. Any funds raised will help with coaching and recruiting foreign players,” said Aidan Quirke, chairman of the St Paul’s division one committee. “It’s exciting times for St Paul’s with our return to the National League. Killarney has always been a great basketball town with over 400 juveniles registered with the club presently.” A campaign will run over the next six weeks to put the necessary sponsorship in place to support the team along with self-generated fundraising initiatives. There will be 10 home games this season and the committee are planning to put on a show. “We want to make home games a great family experience. It’s going to be exciting and we want to get as many as people as possible to get the games with tickets starting €2 for U18s and €5 for adults,” said Aidan Quirke. The committee members are as follows: Tracey O’Shea – secretary John Brosnan – vice chair; Sean Brosnan/Mike Pierce – treasurers.

HE MAY be an instantly recognisable sports star across America but former NBA Basketball champion Shane Battier passed through Killarney almost anonymously last week. His towering presence of 6 foot 8 inches certainly made him stand out when he visited The Porterhouse on Plunkett Street with a group of golfing friends but it is safe to assume that most of the locals there didn’t have a clue who he was. Another group of Americans dining there did recognise him and alerted a staff member about the presence of a sports celebrity in the house. Despite enjoying his low-profile visit to Killarney, Shane kindly obliged to have his photo taken with Porterhouse staff members. Shane Battier is best known for his role on the all-conquering Miami Heat team that won back-to-back NBA Championship titles in 2012 and 2013. His former teammate and friend LeBron James is a global superstar and the greatest player in the world. Other famous players on that successful Miami team included Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Ray Allen. Battier (38) retired from a glittering NBA career after the 2014 finals. He is also well remembered for his outstanding college

career at Duke University, where he led his team to the 2001 National Championship under the guidance of legendary Duke coach and USA Olympics team coach Mike Krzyzewski (“Coach K”). Unfortunately it appears that Shane had left town by the time word filtered through to many of the local basketball enthusiasts about his visit. He is actually quite different to the average sports star and may have had some words of wisdom to offer to the news that top-flight basketball will return to Killarney later this year. Apart from his smart play on the court, Battier was once described as the most intelligent player in the NBA and even made a top ten list of the world’s smartest athletes. His knowledge and skills from his playing career combine well with his current role as the Miami Heat director of basketball development and analytics. Shane Battier definitely wasn’t the first celebrity to enjoy an anonymous visit to Killarney and he certainly won’t be the last. His visit is just one classic example of Killarney’s high ranking as a top global tourist destination. Hopefully the majestic scenery and wonderful hospitality that he enjoyed might inspire him to return again. He might even encourage his friend LeBron to visit!

Eduard Schmidt-Zorner accepts the chain of office from outgoing president Angela O’Connor.

Changing Of The Guard At Rotary APPLAUSE rang out in Gaby’s Restaurant on High Street on Wednesday for outgoing Killarney Rotary Club president Angela O’Connor who completed a highly successful year at the helm of the club. Rotarians welcomed Angela’s successor, Eduard SchmidtZorner as he accepted the chain of office. Originally from Dortmund in Germany and based in Milltown for the past 25 years, Eduard describes himself as “an adopted Kerry man”. “My main objective for the club this year is to have fun and to seek out opportunities for service - to increase recognition of our club both in the Rotary community, national and international,0 and in our community at large, to identify new charities, to keep close contact with responsible people in Killar-

ney, with the cultural scene and to visit our neighbouring clubs,” said the new president. Eduard, who is an artist and writer, joined Killarney Rotary after retiring from Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd, Killarney. “My way into Rotary would not have materialised without the support and advice from Killarney Rotarian Barry Murphy.” Eduard added: “When I look back into the history of our club, I am the first president of foreign origin, though I am Irish citizen now and proud of it, and I am an the oldest to go into the chair,” he said. “We are part of this community and we are respected and we are proud to help so many organisations in our area and all this combined with high level events which thousands of people in our community are marking in their diaries every year.”

Meet Kerry and Killarney’s New First Citizens Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Domnick Walsh

‘I Want To Be A Mayor That Is Representative Of The Wider Community’ PARKING and traffic management in Killarney are among issues Killarney Municipal District’s new cathaoirleach has highlighted since donning the chain of office on Friday. Councillor Niall Kelleher also pledged to focus on the need for improved safety at the Upper Lewis Road junction leading to the Killarney Bypass road, an issue on which Killarney Advertiser has strongly campaigned. This along with a number of other junctions such as Madam’s Hill, Coolcaslagh and Pike Hill, all need to be made safer, he said. “I welcome the new chain of office which is representative of the entire municipal district and it’s important because the town of Killarney and the hinterland, stretching to our other towns of Castleisland, my own native Rathmore and the wider communities, co-exist and are very much interlinked in our daily lives, whether through sport, through music, through work or through socialising,” said Cllr Kelleher. “I want to be a mayor that is representative of this wider community and to further promote inclusivity and dialogue among all groups, both commercial and voluntary.” Buildings like the Aras Phádraig and the Pret-

ty Polly site are of unique importance to the town, said Mayor Kelleher. “I want to ensure that these sites are developed and life brought back into them and creating employment for our town,” he said. Cllr Kelleher is also in favour of broadcasting council meetings on the Internet. He added: “I’m not afraid to work hard and I’m passionate about the work I do. I am never afraid to speak my mind but I won’t speak for the sake of it and if I feel it’s for the betterment of the people and the area we live in, I shall continue speaking out for the people and raising their concerns.”

Lift-Off For Killarney Ladies SIX Killarney ladies powered their way into the record books after they competed in the World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation World Championships. The women, all trained by Sean McCarthy at Phoenix Fitness Studio in High Street, travelled to Belgium for the big event. In the squat, Frances Arthur broke a world record with an 82.5kg lift, while Derina Kelliher notched a new personal best of 87.5kg and Melanie Aranda recorded a new personal best of 90kg. Frances Arthur broke a European record in the bench-press event the following day with a 50kg lift, while Diane Horgan and Derina Kelliher notched new competition bests of 60kg and 50kg respectively and Orlaith O’Driscoll recorded a very strong 47.5kg. On the third day, in the deadlift event, Orlaith O’Driscoll achieved a personal best of 110kg while Derina Kelliher and Shinann O’Sullivan both recorded competition personal bests of 107.5kg. Phoenix Fitness Studio has also purchased the exclusive Eleiko weights for those who are training for powerlifting competitions. “These are literally the best name in powerlifting equipment in the world,” said Sean. “We are in fact the only gym in Killarney that has them and one of only a couple in Kerry. Not only are we probably the best equipped gym in Killarney for powerlifting, in just one year we are one of the biggest powerlifting teams in the country with a group of 20 people, male and female, ranging from 15 to 42 competing in our next competition in September, one of which already holds two world records and one European record.” Check out www.facebook.com/PhoenixFitnesskillarney or call 085-7898123.

‘We Can Achieve A Lot,’ Says Kerry’s New Mayor KERRY’S new mayor has spoken of how he hopes much can be achieved during his term in office. A Fine Gael councillor in the Killarney Municipal District, John Sheahan was elected cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council at the annual meeting of the County Council on Friday. Cllr Sheahan, who has been a member of the council since 2007, was chosen by his colleagues to serve as cathaoirleach for the next 12 months. Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen (FG) has been elected as leas-cathaoirleach. Speaking following his election, Cllr Sheahan, who succeeds Cllr Michael O’Shea (FF), said he was honoured to take up the role: “To become cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council is indeed a great privilege. It is one which I am humbled to take on. I am very conscious that this is a role which relatively few people have occupied since Kerry County Council was established in 1899 so it is a position which I come to with great humility and respect for the role.” Addressing his colleagues at County Buildings,

Mayor of Kerry John Sheahan.

the cathaoirleach paid tribute to his predecessor, Cllr Michael O’Shea, and said: “I hope I will serve as a fair and effective cathaoirleach for the 12 months ahead and I am sure that, with your support, we can achieve a lot in the coming period.”

NEWS July 4 Celebrations

07.07.17 Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Dylan Clifford

Painting The Town Red, White And Blue FROM gunslingers to can-can girls, a carnival atmosphere prevailed in Killarney from morning till night on July 4. A dawn chorus featuring The Shire Men’s Choir got the celebrations started as a rousing rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner rang out at the town hall. As always, this proved to be a very emotional event as our American visitors joined Irish revellers to hold their flags high and sing their national anthem with pride. As Killarney 4th of July festival committee member Ollie Favier said: “The 4th of July is, to a lot of Irish people, what St Patrick’s Day is to Americans.” And from 7am until midnight, the entertainment was unstoppable. Killarney’s Main Street was Main Street USA as the Wild West Troupe, brass bands and dancers impressed locals and visitors alike as they went about their business. The town was a sea of red, white and blue as delighted crowds surged forth to line the streets shortly before 8pm to enjoy the 40-minute long parade. “This was the biggest celebration of America’s Independence outside of America itself,” said Ollie. “We wanted to show our American visitors how truly appreciative we are of them and also give a nod to our loved ones over in America celebrating the day.”

Fireworks & Time Travel DOC and Marty McFly whisked cinemagoers back to 1985 at Killarney House & Gardens for a special movie extravaganza as part of the Killarney 4th of July Celebrations on Tuesday night. Back to the Future lit up the silver screen at the scenic gardens but

before the screening drew to a close at midnight, a spectacular fireworks display illuminated the night skies. “We would like to thank Killarney House & Gardens and Kerry County Council for facilitating this amazing event with Kerry Film Festival,” stated the organisers.

‘I Thank My Kidney Donor For Giving Me This Opportunity’ KILLARNEY native Con Brosnan returned home this week after the experience of a lifetime and he was quick to pay tribute to the generosity of the organ donor who had made it possible. All had notched top-class performances at the 21st World Transplant Games in Malaga both on and off the competitive field. The Irish team won a total of 32 medals while at the same time demonstrating their zest for life, team spirit, sportsmanship and infectious goodwill while honouring their organ donors. The Irish team’s impressive medals haul includes 14 gold, 7 silver and 11 bronze medals from various sporting events.

The key to making great pizza, akin to a great beer, is in the process – the way each carefully selected ingredient is added to another and control of the environment in which these ingredients are mixed and stored,” says Barry Spellman of Killarney Brewing Company. Just five minutes’ walk from the town centre, it is open from 3.30pm, Tuesday-Sunday.

Killarney House Open After €10M Makeover

T

Pat Dawson, Manager, Killarney House and Gardens, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin, Harry O’Donoghue, Senator Paul Coghlan, Niall Parson, Architect OPW.

HE doors of Killarney House swung open on Monday morning as the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys, together with the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, performed the official launch. The three principal rooms of the house, which have been restored to their former glory, are now open to the public for the first time – the dining room, the living room/library and the drawing room. The house is being developed as the main visitor and interpretative centre for the National Park. In the depths of the recession, the €10 million project was announced in 2011 by then Minister Jimmy Deenihan and involved a major refurbishment programme for the House and its ornamental grounds and gardens. The project involved collaboration with the Office of Public Works as project managers and Fáilte Ireland. Now, the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Department for Arts have agreed a partnership to showcase its collections in Killarney House. Pat Dawson, manager, Killarney House and Gardens, paid tribute to Jimmy Deenihan, as well as his former boss Dan Kelleher who was “instrumental” in bringing the project to fruition, as was caretaker Harry O’Donoghue. “For those of you who remember the tradition of having the ‘station Mass’ in your home, you will know that a huge amount of work is completed in the final days before the event, with help from the neighbours,” Mr Dawson told the gathering. “A wise man told me recently that “if it were not for “the last minute” nothing would ever be completed on time!” Minister of State Brendan Griffin described the house and gardens, located within walking distance of the town centre, as “a vital link between the town and the National Park”. The leas-chathaoirleach of the Seanad, Senator Paul Coghlan, Ballydowney, Killarney, said: “The restored gardens were opened to the public last year and I am delighted that we are now seeing the opening of the rooms of the house with original furniture of Lord Castlerosse, Earls of Kenmare and ‘The Man Who Built Washington’, John McShain.” Killarney House and Gardens, Killarney National Park.

Killarney House At A Glance

Harry O’Donoghue and former minister Jimmy Deenihan.

KILLARNEY HOUSE, previously known as Kenmare House, was the seat of the Kenmare family until 1956. The Kenmare family are descended from Sir Valentine Browne, appointed Surveyor-General of Ireland by Queen Elizabeth I in 1559. In 1952, the seventh and last Earl of Kenmare died leaving Kenmare House and Estate to his niece Mrs Beatrice Grosvenor. In 1956 the House with a section of the estate was sold and eventually acquired by Mr John McShain, an American of Irish descent, who, with his wife, used the House Moira Murrell, Chief Executive, Kerry County Council, as a summer residence from 1958 until their deaths. with Tommy Cronin.

Third Generation To Work At Killarney House

Harry O’Donoghue and his sisters, Anne Moynihan, Noreen Healy, Pat Fleming and Eileen O’Donoghue with Minister Heather Humphreys.

IT WAS an emotional day for Harry O’Donoghue and his sisters Anne Moynihan, Noreen Healy, Pat Fleming and Eileen O’Donoghue as Killarney House was offically opened to the public. The family has very strong ties with Killarney House, having worked for both families that had resided there. Harry O’Donoghue is the third generation of his family to work in the Killarney Estate. He was a butler to the McShain family for 16 years until the deaths of John McShain and his wife Mary. The couple had enjoyed Killarney House as their summer residence from 1958 until 1998. What we now call Killarney House is a converted stable block of Kenmare House, built by Valentine Browne, the third Viscount Kenmare, in 1726. The original Killarney House was still unfinished in 1879 when fire caused extensive damage worth £2,000.

The Kenmares moved to the Isle of Wight until the 1890s when they returned to Killarney House. Fire struck Killarney House again in 1913. The Kenmares abandoned the ruined house and remodelled the stables of the 18th-century Kenmare House. This is the current Killarney House. It was here that Tim O’Donoghue of New Street got a job in 1914, as a reward for saving the life of Valentine Edward Kenmare (Lord Castlerosse) when they both served in the Irish Guards during World War I. Thus started a family tradition, with Tim’s son Paddy working as a butler for the Kenmare family, and his son Harry working on the estate under various employers from 1986 until today. After the deaths of John and Mary McShain, Killarney House fell into disrepair. And over the past six years, Mr O’Donoghue has played a critical role in its restoration.

Women Play A Key Role In Killarney’s Tourism Industry

Eileen O’Callaghan

Emer Corridan

THE Killarney tourism industry stands out as a sector that affords women the opportunity to be movers and shakers on equal footing with their male counterparts. Historically, Killarney women have played a key role running hotels, guesthouses, hotels, bars and shops. Each new generation has thrown up its own crop of household names as a variety of women become industry leaders until the time comes to pass on the torch to a new wave of talented and innovative women. Memories of the late Beatrice Grosvenor (1915-1985) may be dimming but, in common with her ancestors, the Earls of Kenmare, she did much to advance tourism in Killarney. Mrs Grosvenor was the driving force behind the opening of the Castlerosse Hotel in 1960. A drive-in complex modelled on the motel concept, it was the first hotel in Killarney to have a swimming pool. The first manager of the hotel was Elizabeth McCarthy, who still lives in

Killarney. Another key figure in the hotel trade was the late Sheila O’Donoghue, who started The Gleneagle Hotel with her husband, Paddy. Sheila was passionate about the hospitality business and

B&B Women Are The Unsung Heroes Of Killarney Tourism THE woman of the house, the driving force behind the B&B trade in Killarney town and valley, remains to this day, though in reduced numbers, a multi-tasker who runs a hotel in microcosm, often while raising a family at the same time. Among the early pioneers of this homely face of the accommodation sector was the late Kathy Guerin, Muckross Road, who started the guesthouse “Irish Cottage” with her husband, Con, in 1950. Kathy and her contemporaries were enterprising women motivated at first by the opportunity to raise some extra cash to educate their children. They went on to bring the traditional Irish welcome to an art form, becoming unofficial tourism ambassadors along the way. Mary Guerin described her mother as a “total professional” who believed the customer was always right. “She absolutely loved working in the guesthouse,” Mary said. “Every summer evening, the gorgeous aroma of freshly baked brown bread, scones and apple tarts could be smelt wafting from the kitchen for afternoon teas and suppers and as a welcome with a cup of tea.” Mary recalled a Christmas Day when the house was not open for guests and some Germans arrived to the door. Kathy said there had to be “room at the inn” for them and gave them her own dinner. Her New York-based son, Denis, remembered chatting to Kathy on the phone only to hear the sound of the receiver banging against the wall – Denis calling from NY forgotten as Kathy attended to her guests. Kathy continued working in ‘Irish Cottage’ until she was in her mid-80s.

Marie Chawke

Eileen O’Callaghan, The Fáilte Hotel, both of whom illustrate the theory that a passion for your job keeps you young. “Our relationship with our guests and people is still the most important thing,” Kay Randles said. “It’s important to give people a good welcome.” Hotelier Kathleen O’Regan Sheppard became an “accidental host” after she left the public service and opened Kathleen’s Country House 35 years ago. “Tourism is akin to show business,” Kathleen said. “Regardless of the weather and how one feels the show must go on and the visitor welcomed.” Cahernane House Hotel general manager Emer Corridan classes interaction with the public is one of the most enjoyable aspects of her job. “A cliché I know, but really, talking to people is so enjoyable when you are interested in people and their lives,” she said. “I love not knowing what each day will bring – and it’s always different in a hotel but it makes for an exciting and unique job.”

Tracy Coyne

Tracy Coyne has traded a banking career to work in the family business, The International Best Western Hotel. Tracy enjoys working with brilliant people who share the same passion for Killarney and Kerry. “Tourism allows me to meet people from all corners of the earth and join them as they glimpse the wonder of my world through their eyes,” she said. “Women are naturals when it comes to hospitality,” she said. “We are life’s carers – we welcome, we feed and we build relationships with others.” Marie Chawke ran the Aghadoe Heights Hotel with her husband, Pat, for 14 years up to January 2015. She is now engaged in consultancy work in Ireland and Dubai. “To be a great hotel or guesthouse means not only having all the basic requisites of a welcoming environment, top-notch product and exceptional service in place, but also taking steps to innovate and create something extra and memorable,” Marie said.

RACE DAY PREPARATION As it’s less than a fortnight to the big day, your body and mind may feel tired. This is all normal and you are not alone. Below are a few tips to help you prepare for race day. TRAINING Let your legs and body recover from all the training you have been doing in the build up to the race. It’s time to start ‘tapering’, in other words, starting to decrease the mileage (but keep up the intensity or pace) gradually in order to be as fresh and raring to go come race day! Now is a good time to incorporate some ‘race pace’ into your training, for example, if your goal is to run around 2 hours for the half marathon (9 min 10 secs per mile) then do some runs at this pace. It’s a great way of getting the body used to running at this pace and come race day it will stand you in good stead. Don’t forget to warm up and cool down after this though! If you have a niggle then rest for a day or two, our bodies are a great indicator if something’s not quite right so we should listen to it. Two weeks out and I can assure you that no fitness will be lost at this stage. STRETCHING Keep your muscles nice and relaxed by doing some stretches,

✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓

use a foam roller or do some pilates or yoga. You can check out some of our useful yoga stretches along with other useful information on our Run Killarney YouTube channel.

HYDRATION AND NUTRITION Don’t drink too much water the day before the race, try to drink fluids regularly throughout the week. A good indicator if you’re well hydrated is if your urine is straw coloured. Any darker, then up the fluids a little. Focus on eating a healthy diet in the week leading up to the event. You can then look forward to after the race for the indulgences to commence! Try to ensure you have a healthy balance of carbohydrates, protein and good fats and also limit your intake of sugar. Energy gels are a great way of providing energy during activity but the golden rule is to try these out before the race to see what works and what doesn’t. There are loads of products out there and some will suit different people. RACE INFORMATION Get to know bus and race start times. (All this information is available on www.runkillarney.com)

Search Is On For Other Planets The hunt for other planets in the universe is going full steam ahead with thousands of planets having being found in orbit around distant suns, says Trevor O’Donoghue

TELESCOPES and technology are progressing at a breakneck pace allowing us to probe the light from these distant worlds for traces of gases that might signify life. Probes in our own solar system are busy looking for the signs and signatures of life. In addition a number of earth based radio telescopes are getting in on the act, gathering data from far away stars in the hope of finding an artificial signal, which would mean extra terrestrial intelligence. The volume of data gathered is staggering and the amount of computer power needed to crunch the data is also staggering. But here lies an opportunity for citizen scientists with a computer and an internet connection to get involved. SETI@home is an internet-based, public volunteer programme that anal-

yses radio signals in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). It has been running since 1999 and involves the user downloading a small software programme that runs as a screensaver when the computer is not being used. The programme receives chunks of data recorded from radio telescopes and analyses them for artificial signals. The results are then sent back to base and a new piece of data downloaded. The programme run by The University of California, Berkeley has millions of users worldwide, but so far hasn’t turned up any signals. However, there is no reason to be discouraged, as it has only covered about 2% of the sky so far. The get involved simply Google SETI@home and start looking for aliens from the comfort of your sitting room.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Taoiseach’s ‘Sock-Off’ THE BBC coined it “sock diplomacy” as the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, wore a pair of maple leaf socks for his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Mr Trudeau looked in fine form as he enjoyed a laugh with Leo, his first official visitor since becoming Taoiseach. The pair were pictured ahead of talks at Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park – where Mr Varadkar

appeared to come second in the ‘sock-off’ with Mr Trudeau opting not to wear leprechaun stockings. Mr Trudeau’s arrival was arranged two months on from Mr Varadkar’s predecessor Enda Kenny meeting him in Montreal. The Canadian Prime Minister reckons both Canada and Ireland should cash in on Brexit and Donald Trump’s US presidency by encouraging people and businesses to relocate.

Drug Seizure In ‘Sophisticated Grow House’ In Kerry GARDAI investigating the sale and supply of controlled drugs in the Kerry area have seized cannabis plants and dried cannabis. Gardaí from Listowel carried out a planned search of a house in Moyvane on Monday afternoon. During the course of the search cannabis plants at various stages of maturity and dried cannabis with a combined estimated street value of up to €350,000 (pending

analysis) was discovered in what is described as “a sophisticated grow house”. A male in his 60s was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Listowel Garda Station. He has since been released pending a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions. The scene was preserved and technically examined.

Trump ‘To Confront Theresa May Over Terminally Ill Baby Boy’ DONALD TRUMP is reportedly planning to confront Theresa May over the case of terminally ill child Charlie Gard. The White House is expected to raise the issue of the 11-monthold boy’s treatment in a oneto-one meeting with the Prime Minister at the G20 summit. The US President said this week he would be “delighted” to help Charlie, who is being cared for in London, after a UK court ruled his life-support machine should be turned off. The Vatican also offered to treat the young boy amid growing

international attention on a lengthy legal battle between his parents, who want to take him to the US for experimental therapy, and doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Downing Street is preparing for the subject to come up in a meeting with the President at the gathering of world leaders in Hamburg, the Daily Mail reported. Their talks are likely to be dominated by the North Korea missile crisis and a post-Brexit trade deal, but Number 10 was said to be compiling a detailed

briefing on Charlie’s case in anticipation of questions from Mr Trump. Charlie suffers from a rare genetic condition which causes brain damage and muscle depletion and no one can be certain whether or not he feels pain, GOSH has said. Successive legal attempts by Charlie’s parents failed as judges in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court in London ruled in favour of doctors, while the European Court of Human Rights declined to hear the couple’s appeal.

Churches To Fall Silent THE day is “not far off” when some churches will fall silent on Sundays as the Catholic Church in Kerry faces dwindling numbers of the clergy.

The Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne warned that it will soon be no longer possible to celebrate Masses at the weekend in every church in the Diocese of Kerry.

In The News Today Killarney Is Oldest Large Town Raids On Motor Insurance Providers Over Alleged Cartel Activity

INSURANCE companies, brokers and representative bodies for the industry were raided on Tuesday morning as part of investigations into alleged price fixing in the motor insurance industry. It is understood that 45 officers the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) and the European Competition Directorate raided the main motor insurance providers. The unannounced, early morning raids are part of an investigation into the sector, according to the

Irish Times. Kerry Sinn Fein TD Martin Ferris says he hopes an investigation into alleged price fixing in the motor insurance industry will result in lower premiums for drivers. Deputy Ferris has also praised the campaign organised by Killorglin’s Kian Griffin, whose Ireland Underground group has highlighted the high cost of car insurance for young motorists. Martin Ferris knows a 19-year-old in this county who drives a 1.6 litre car and was charged €9,000 for insurance.

Snake On The Plains Of Meath

A SNAKE HAS been spotted on the loose in Fordstown, Co Meath, this week. Local Fianna Fáil TD Shane Cassells posted a photo of the snake to Facebook, stating that several local residents spotted it in Fordstown. Speaking on RTÉ Radio One’s Morning Ireland, Kevin Cunningham of the National Exotic Animal Sanctuary (NEAS) said that looking at the photographs, the reptile appears to be a corn snake. “The snake has been seen as far as we can ascertain for a least three weeks on one or two occasions,” He said. He asked any local residents who spot the snake to approach it with caution, take a photograph of it and call NEAS or a local veterinary. “A corn snake is not dangerous, it’s a non-venomous snake,” he said.

This is 1.3 years older than it was five years ago, when the last census was taken. The profile data shows both the numbers of pre-school children and young adults have fallen while the numbers of those aged over 65 have grown by more than 19%.

Irish Women Injured In French Car Crash TWO Irish women have been seriously injured in a road collision in northern France. The women were among a family of eight involved in the incident which occurred in Beaumont-en-Auge on Wednesday, accord-

ing to local media reports. French newspaper Ouest-France reported that one of the women was airlifted to hospital in the city of Caen in a critical condition. An 18-year-old woman is also said to be in a serious condition.

Woman’s Body Recovered From Sea THE body of a woman has been recovered from the sea at the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare. The discovery was made on Thursday afternoon by members of the public who had been hiking the popular cliff trail. It is understood the hikers first found a rucksack on the clifftop and soon afterwards

spotted what they believed to be a body in the water below. Gardaí and the Irish Coast Guard were alerted to the incident. Coast Guard volunteers launched a boat from their base at Doolin while a land team made its way to the cliff top by road.

Protesters At G-20 Summit In Hamburg “Like most animals, if you approach it and it feels threatened it will bite you, possibly, but not in the sense that it will inject venom into you.” The snake is most likely to appear in warmer weather, according to Cunningham.

Rob Kardashian Could Face Criminal Charges ROB KARDASHIAN could face criminal prosecution for posting a series of explicit photos of his former fiancée Blac Chyna on Twitter. The since-deleted photos, some of which Kardashian re-shared several times as Instagram removed them from the website, showed Chyna’s nude body. Kardashian, the son of the late Robert Kardashian, was suspended from the site after also sharing a string of posts accusing Chyna of cheating on him, taking advantage of him financially and taking drugs. Reviewed: Marlena by Julie Buntin LIKE Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend, Marlena focuses on the complexity of female friendship. The debut novel by Julia Buntin, it opens with the narrator, a 15-year-old girl named Cat, hurtling toward Lake Michigan in a car that’s going far too fast. The driver is Marlena, two years older, strikingly beautiful with a “sly, feline face, all cheekbones and blink”. She drowns, Cat reveals after only

a few pages, in “less than six inches of ice-splintered river, in the woods on the outskirts of downtown Kewaunee, a place she had no reason to be at twilight in November.” The rest of the book becomes an attempt by an older Cat to exorcise Marlena’s imprint on her own life—to consider the intoxicating thrill of Marlena’s wildness, and whether Cat could have done more to alter her trajectory.

Netflix - Nobody Speak – Trials Of The Free Press

When the online tabloid Gawker posted a surreptitiously filmed sex tape of professional wrestler Hulk Hogan, it ignited a high stakes legal battle that pit privacy rights against the American first amendment. The staggering verdict bankrupted Gawker and its founder Nick Denton, but also exposed a shadowy figure behind the scenes -- Silicon Valley

venture capitalist Peter Thiel. Nine years earlier Gawker had outed Thiel on its site and the furious billionaire had been waiting for his chance to destroy them. Are the very wealthy thwarting the First Amendment to silence critics? In an age of extreme inequality, how vulnerable is a free press that has lost most of its traditional sources of income?

Belleek Pottery is one of Ireland’s top five visitor attractions, says Catriona Kennedy of O’Callaghan Coach Holidays NESTLING on the banks of the River Erne, Belleek Pottery is an imposing building. Home to the world-famous Belleek Fine Parian china and also to one of Ireland’s top five visitor attractions, it was established in 1857 and holds a very special place in the cultural and commercial heritage of County Fermanagh. In 1853 John Caldwell Bloomfield, owner of the Castlecaldwell estate, commissioned a mineral survey of his lands. It discovered that in an area approximately eight miles from Belleek at Larkhill, there were sufficient deposits of Feldspar and Kaolin (china clay) to make mining commercially viable. A crushing mill was built at Belleek on the site of an old corn mill and where there was waterpower from the River Erne to drive the machinery necessary to process the raw

Beauty

materials. These materials were exported to England and a large contract was established with the firm of Kerr & Binns of Worcester, later to become Royal Worcester. It was through this link that John Caldwell Bloomfield, Robert Williams Armstrong and later David McBirney met. Each of them was to contribute vital elements to the foundation and success of the Pottery- land, expertise and finance. The resulting company was known as David McBirney & Co. In 1858 construction of the main pottery building started. Join O’Callaghan Coach Holidays on their Donegal, the Walls of Derry, Belleek Pottery and Daniel O’Donnell tour from Monday, October 9, to Thursday, October 1. Contact Catriona on 064-6631095.

Ordinary solutions

THE first stage of the Universal Contour Elite Wrap sees a warm detoxifying clay applied to the skin which helps cleanse, reduces appearance of cellulite, stretch marks and aids the removal of harmful toxins from the body. Warm sea clay is applied to skin, followed by bandages (using a specific wrapping technique) are applied firmly to help lift, tighten and improve skins texture. Exclusive to Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio, we offer the added benefit of the Elite straps which provide a pulsing current. This has three settings: Reshaping, Toning and Anti Cellulite. This current works on the muscle helping to tighten skin and open pores allowing the clay to penetrate deeper. A heated blanket is wrapped around you while the wrap works. We recommend the clay to be left on the skin after the treatment as it stays in the pores and therefore more detoxification and tightening can continue for two-three days. A course of three is recommended for best results. Aftercare is important. Drink plenty of water and make sure you follow a “clean eating” plan after the wrap. These are vital to maximise the inch-loss benefits. Contact Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 0646632966.

07.07.17 Bin Charges

Flat Fees Dumped Noel O’Reilly, KWD Recycling, analyses the new household waste collection changes THE Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughten, confirmed that a more flexible framework for waste collection charges have been approved by Government. All-in flat-rate charging for household waste will be phased out as customers renew or enter new service contracts. Companies will no longer be able to offer “fixed rates” or “flat fees”. Under the new arrangement waste collectors will be given the flexibility to continue to offer, or to introduce a range of incentivised pricing options to their customers. These options include elements or combinations or standing charges, and weight bands, and weight allowance charges. So what can you do to reduce your weight? Think in terms of reducing, reusing and recycling. The following are tips how to reduce your waste footprint and save money.

HOME COMPOSTING

Remove your garden waste from your waste bin! You can reap a heap of benefits from composting including: cutting waste expenses and saving money. On average, food and garden wastes make up over a third of the contents of your rubbish bin.

Grass weighs a lot and increases weight in your bin.

The true cost of food waste is difficult to put a number on but the average Irish household is binning between €400 – €1,000 worth of food each year. Did you know each carrot you throw out costs you 12c, a head of lettuce is €1.00 and a slice of bread is 10c. So the next time you throw out a slice of bread, or that bag of salad left in the back of the fridge, think about how this all adds up to money from your pocket going into the bin; see www. stopfoodwaste.ie

RECYCLING

Before buying items, look out for compostable and recycling symbols on packaging. Try to buy goods with less packaging or leave packing in the shop if allowed. Invest in a refillable water bottle, coffee cup and lunch box. Follow a list of recyclable materials accepted by your waste collection company. Place a “no junk mail” sign on your letterbox. If you are unsure contact your local supplier who will be happy to advise you on what your options are and how to reduce your weight.

Puck Fair

Launching Puck Fair 2017, at ‘The Diaspora Lady’ statue on Iveragh Road, were 2016 World Coastal Rowing Champion Monika Dukarska, Caitlin Horgan, Puck Fair Queen, Lily-Sue Eyers and Declan Mangan, Chair of Puck Fair. Pic: Don MacMonagle

IT’S a promise that rings out across the globe every year as Killorglin people now living away from home resolve to be back for Puck as they plan their return around Ireland’s oldest festival. It was fitting then that the town’s monument to the diaspora, on Iveragh Road, was the location this week for the launch of Puck Fair by 2016 World Coastal Rowing Champion Monika Dukarska, who is aspiring to qualify for the Olympics. Monika joined forces with Puck Fair queen Caitlin Horgan, lady-in-waiting Sue Eyers and Declan Mangan, chairman of the Puck

Fair committee to launch the 2017 programme. One time I remarked to a friend who hails from the Mid Kerry town that Puck is like Christmas for its denizens. She looked at me in alarm, informing me: “No, for us, Puck is way bigger than Christmas!” Puck Fair runs from August 10-12 and the three-day extravaganza attracts visitors from all over Ireland and the world including the Irish diaspora, who come to see the coronation of the wild mountain goat and enjoy 36 hours of free family entertainment. Hosting A Summer Party

SUMMER TIME and the living’ is easy – or so the song goes! But if you want to make the most of the July and August sunshine, you will probably be putting in place a game plan to host the perfect summer get-together! Don’t worry – with just a little preparation, party planners will enjoy a stress-free lead-up to that

all-important do. The beauty of organising a seasonal celebration or barbecue in Killarney is there really is an enormous amount of expertise locally to help you ensure yours is the summer soiree no one wants to miss. Party planning can be overwhelming, but the savviest hosts

and hostesses have a few tricks up their sleeves that make it possible to entertain, worry-free. Follow our guide below and all you’ll really need to concern yourself about at the event itself is making the most of that quality time with family and friends. Because isn’t that what parties are really all about?

Party

Three Weeks Before Create the concept

Decide on your party theme. Will you be hosting a family-friendly barbecue or a sophisticated cocktail night? Decide on a location, date and time. Create handy lists that you can continually update throughout the planning process. These will include a master to-do list, and a cost sheet that outlines your budget and a shopping list.

A Fortnight Before Invitations

Create a guest list and decide whether online invitations or mailed invitations are appropriate for the event. Be sure to include the who, what, when and where; a suggested attire is usually much appreciated by guests.

Plan your menu Plan a menu based on seasonal ingredients. Berries, fresh herbs and farmers’ market veggies are at their peak during summer months, so think of ways to incorporate these types of produce into each area of the menu, from appetizers to desserts. Choose dishes that can be prepared in advance, leaving only one or two that need last-minute attention. Survey your serving pieces to ensure you have the

proper vessel for each dish you’re preparing. Inviting guests to contribute their favourite summer dishes lightens the load and brings a fun, collaborative feel to the event.

For the drinks Keep it casual. Embrace the idea of a self-serve bar or iced-down beers in a galvanized bucket. Sangrias and margaritas are a summertime favourite and can be prepared ahead of time, allowing guests to serve themselves. Set drinks out in a punch bowl or glass drink dispenser for easy access and a pretty presentation.

For the decor Pick a palette. Summer is the perfect time to embrace brighter colours in sunny combinations. Incorporate them into your party through decorative details like paper flags and linens.

A Week Before

Start prepping

Cross off any ingredients or party supplies still remaining on your shopping list. Use this week to knock out any prep that can be done ahead of time, like assembling favour bags, handwriting place cards and arranging a buffet setup. If you’re setting up a buffet, use a sticky note to label each serving piece in advance with what item will be served on it. This ensures that each dish has a place and the buffet is perfectly arranged.

The Day Before Set the scene

Give the event space a thorough cleaning. Put up decorations and set the scene. Prepare any dishes that can be refrigerated and won’t perish overnight. Even if your party is outside, remember that guests will be coming inside to use the bathroom. Beautify this space by removing all personal belongings from the counter and placing a gorgeous bottle of soap and high-quality paper napkins near the sink.

The Day Of The Party Final touches

Bring it all together by setting the table, finishing final food preparations, putting beverages on ice and lighting candles. Give yourself plenty of time to get party-ready before guests arrive. Don a gorgeous outfit, add festive accessories, and toast to the success of your fabulous summer party!

Recruit help Have a friend or relative come over early to assist with setup, replenishing dishes and pitching in during clean-up.

Credit Union Offers Promotional Rate THIS week, Killarney Credit Union launched its new loan product – the “Connect Loan” for members who have never borrowed from the credit union before or haven’t in the past three years. The credit union is offering a very competitive interest rate of 6% (6.2% APR)* with this product, to encourage its members to think about borrowing from the credit union. We have introduced the Connect Loan for new borrowers or previous borrowers to get them to connect with us here in the credit union. Nearly half of our members haven’t ever borrowed or borrowed recently from us and we hope that by offering a good rate of interest will encourage them to come in and apply. There are many advantages of a credit union loan including flexible repayment terms, free loan protection, no fees or charges for processing your loan and better rates than many oth-

er credit products such as credit cards or overdrafts. We offer a huge amount of convenience for new borrowers as well, with full online banking facilities and direct debits for loan repayments. A decision can be made on your loan quickly, often on the same day. We consider all loan applications on the members ability to repay the loan, which is of paramount important”. The “Connect Loan” is now available in all Killarney Credit Union branches at Beech Road, Park Road and Kenmare. You can also make a quick loan enquiry online www.killarneycu. ie and a loan officer will contact you back. For a 2,000 loan over 24 months, with a variable rate of 6% and typical APR of 6.2%, with 24 monthly of €88.65, the total amount repayable will be €2,127.30. Mark Murphy CEO, Killarney Credit Union

‘Chaotic Road System Is Recipe For Disaster’ THE recent tragic accident in the Gap of Dunloe should, in my opinion, start a debate about the reality of driving through that very scenic road. On May 30 an American tourist who cycled through the Gap collided with a jeep carrying sheep. Sadly, the accident was fatal and the lady died at the scene. I know that Don, her husband, has recently written to the Department of Transport, with a hope that Janet’s death will prevent similar tragedies occurring again – if only we are willing to learn from it. I must say I share his hope, especially being a frequent visitor to the area and witnessing the badly designed, chaotic road system of the Gap and the struggle of its users. Today’s reality leaves a lot to be desired and frankly, I’m surprised that accidents like this one don’t happen more often. At the entrance to the Gap, there is a sign – read by nobody and executed by nobody – stating who is and who isn’t allowed to enter the very narrow road. Since it is ignored, walkers, cars, bikes, motorbikes and horse carriages all go together. The amount of road rage and confusion between them on each and every single day (especially now, in the season) is enormous. Residents/farmers drive fast, rushing through the Gap and ignoring the fact that tourists in their rental cars often struggle to manoeuvre at all. Cyclists and walkers

are constantly forced to stop on the side of the road, letting cars and carriages out. Add the fact that nobody knows who has the right of way and picture horses in the middle of it all – it’s a recipe for disaster. Going forward however, I’d suggest replacing carriages with electric rickshaws or minibuses and in the season, only a limited number of them should be allowed in the Gap at one time. The only people with unlimited access to the road during the day should be walkers, residents, farmers and perhaps cyclists (subject to discussion). The Gap is in a desperate need of more bays, so that you don’t have to stop every time you see a car that is a kilometre away. Bays, bays and more bays. On both sides of the road. Mirrors at bends were suggested also by Don Theiler, the husband of tragically killed Janet. The bend that she died at is just calling for one. If we want to bring road system of the Gap to a level where everybody is enjoying their time and nobody is risking a stressful day, to say the least – we need to start a discussion. I hope I’m not the only voice out there, wishing decision makers dedicated their time and faced the problem. It is not a recent one – the situation in the Gap has been escalating for years. 07.07.17 Out & About

Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley casts an eye over local singers and musicians

Michael and Morris Bowler in Reidy’s.

In Praise Of Homegrown Talent I SPENT a number of years studying performance in Dublin and during that time I was lucky enough to work and study with some of Ireland’s best up-andcoming singers. One might assume that all the best performers gravitate to our country’s capital but you couldn’t be more wrong. Recently I have become very aware of the number of extremely talented people living and performing in our own town and around Munster. The amazingly talented Gemma Sugrue has spent the last number of months singing with Jenny Greene and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. This whole project is such a great step forward for music in Ireland as it combines so many different musical genres and musicians from completely different disciplines. Gemma also runs a hugely successful school called Voiceworks and her knowledge of the ins and outs of singing seems endless. Living locally we are very lucky to have two great male

singer-songwriters, Tom Lucey and Cathal Flaherty. They have both recently released new songs along with music videos and I have to say I was both moved and impressed by what I heard. On an international level the local brother-sister combo that are Greywind are Killarney natives Steph and Paul O’Sullivan. Their brand of music is so powerful and dramatic that it is hard to believe they began by writing material at home in Killarney and were picked up when a music company came across one of their songs on online. I cannot begin to imagine the number of talented local people out there but what I do know is that we need to support our local talent. We all hear that we should shop local. Well, I urge you this week to listen local! If you haven’t already, look up these fantastic artists and show them that homegrown talent is not only acknowledged but it is also supported. • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

Recipe

Of The Week WARM CHOCOLATE MOUSSE The Killarney Park Hotel head chef Heiko Riebandt shares his recipe for an afterdinner treat

INGREDIENTS

Eight eggs 150g sugar 50g chocolate powder 250g dark chocolate 50g butter Some butter and sugar for the rings

METHOD

Melt the chocolate and the butter in a bowl over warm water. Wisk the eggs with the sugar in a bowl over hot water till they are warm; be careful not to make scrambled egg! Then whisk the eggs cold; the volume should go up to three times the size. Add the chocolate powder inside the slight warm egg. Do not whisk too much. Add the melted chocolate and gently bring it under the whisked eggs. Fill it immediately into buttered and sugared rings set on greasing paper, this needs to happen fast because the mass will go hard. Don’t fill the rings too high the mass will rise to about the double volume. Cook in pre-heated oven at 190C for about eight to twelve minutes. Depending on the size of the ring, the middle should be soft ideal when you cut that it runs out.

JUNIOR World Rally Championship contender Rob Duggan has spoken of his disappointment after missing out on Rally Poland due to a sponsorship issue. The Junior WRC is contested over six WRC rounds – starting in Corsica, then Italy, Poland, Finland and Germany before finishing in Spain. The Killarney rally ace followed the season opening round in Corsica with the Rally Italia Sardinia in June in which he claimed sixth place. But the former Motorsport Ireland Young Rally Driver of the Year and his co-driver Ger Conway missed out on taking part in the Rally Poland stage last week because of what Rob describes as “a hold-up” in prize money funding. “We were

ready to go, but unfortunately it just wasn’t happening,” he told Killarney Advertiser. When Duggan and Conway clinched the DMACK Junior title in the British Rally Championship last year, the prize was to provide funding for Duggan to take a huge step forward in his rally career by tackling five rounds of this year’s World Rally Championship. “There seems to be a hesitancy with the prize and we have not received anything,” said the 24-year-old. The prize money was to come in three payments, with the drivers half-funding the drives, added Rob. “We have two rallies completed and have not seen anything. It is a shame,” he said.

Volvo Says All Models Will Be Hybrid Or Electric In Two Years VOLVO says in the next two years it will abandon basic petrol and diesels for mild, full hybrid and pure-electric powerplants. The Swedish car maker has announced it is turning its back on traditional petrol and diesel engines for an all-electrified future. Come 2019 and the Swedish brand says every single model it launches with come with either a 48-volt mild hybrid, full hybrid or pure-electric powertrain in its bid to cut fuel consumption and reduce emissions. Around 2023-2025 Volvo says it will not sell a single vehicle powered solely by an

internal combustion engine. Volvo confirmed it was readying five pure-electric cars that will be introduced from 2019-2021 which will include two high performance Polestar models. From 2019, the brand says even the most basic petrol or diesel will come with its new 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain, while more expensive models will be offered with a plug-in petrol or diesel powertrains developed from its T8 Twin Engine-powered S90 and XC90 models. Reducing overall emissions further, the Swedish car maker says it aims to have a “climate neutral” manufacturing facility in operation at its European, US and

Chinese factories. The move to an electrified future comes in the wake of some countries announc-

ing tougher emission regulations for diesels or outright bans in city centres.

LONG

In loving Memory of Noreen Long, late of Inches, Rathmore who passed away on July 6th 2016. Farewell Dear Mother Somewhere in our heart beneath all our grief and pain, is a smile we still wear at the sound of your dear name. The precious word is Mother she was our world you see, but now our heart is breaking cause she’s no longer here. God chose her for his angel to watch us from above to guide and advise us and to know that we’re still loved. The day she had to leave us when her life on earth was through, God had better plans for her, for this we surely knew. When we think of her kind heart and all those loving years, our memories surround us and we can’t hold back the tears. She truly was our best friend, someone we could confide in, she always had a tender touch and a warm gentle grin. We want to thank you Mother for teaching us so well and though the time has come we must bid you this farewell. Don’t think of her as gone away Her journey’s just begun… Life holds so many facets, This earth is only one. Just think of her as resting From the sorrows and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort Where there are no days or years. Think how she must be wishing That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness Can really pass away. And think of her as living In the hearts of those she touched, For nothing loved is ever lost And she was loved so much. Your passing has left the greatest void in our lives and we missed you every day. Lynda, Vicki, Tracy & Tanya.

Launch

Opening A New Chapter On Milltown IT PROMISES to be a night of memories and nostalgia in Milltown on Friday, July 14, when a memoir of life in the mid-Kerry village is published and launched by a local retired teacher and historian. Gwin for the Blue by Pat McKenna from Milltown recounts the happenings and characters of his native place in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s and is a lively and entertaining read. Recounting stories and anecdotes from the first twenty years of his life, the memoir charts an Ireland barely recognisable to the young people of today and tells of life in a rural village from the War years to the Swinging Sixties. The self-published book is described as a tribute to local people who survived the ups and downs of life “in spite of dungeon, fire and sword”. Pat’s stories include references to local landmarks like the Godfrey Estate and the formidable last member of that landed gentry family, Miss Phyllis, as well as recollections of the railway line through Milltown, school sports days, and the dominant position of the Catholic Church at the time. Pat McKenna was born in Milltown in 1943 and was educated locally. Having graduated from University College Dublin, he became a secondary school teacher and taught in Dublin, Tralee and Africa before retiring to his native village. “This memoir deals with my memories of Milltown from 1943 to 1963. It has stories from my childhood and tells of what life was like in the locality in those years,” said Pat. “I hope it will bring back memories for people and I hope everyone will enjoy it.” Gwin for the Blue by Pat McKenna will be launched at the Muintir na Tíre Hall, The Square, Milltown, on Friday, July 14, at 8pm by local author Owen O’Shea, and all are welcome.

Garden Magic Debby Looney

The summer holidays offer a prime opportunity to work on a project like a rockery, says Debby Looney THERE are many variations on a rockery: a slope with some large rocks in the way of the lawnmower, a level bed with a layer of decorative stone on it, or the side of a ditch. In reality, though, a rockery should be a free draining sloped garden, in which alpines can be grown. The free draining part is the most essential aspect of a rockery. The choice of plants is vast, and I believe this is a great project in which to involve children, as the plants are small and colourful, and the size of your rockery can be the size of a trough to the size of your imagination! There are a few simple steps to creating a beautiful rock garden. Firstly, you will need rocks! Many of us have them as soon as we dig a hole in the garden, but some may have to go to a local quarry. Then choose your site, ideally sheltered from the rain, close to a wall for example, and in a sunny spot. This is because, even though alpine plants are hardy, they do not like very wet conditions. Remove topsoil first. Place a good mound of rocks/bricks/rubble on the excavated site, creating the height and size, as well as the drainage required. If you have removed turf, lay this over the bricks, grass side down. A piece of old carpet can also be used. If you have neither, use some gravel before covering the rubble with your topsoil. Next, take a good look at your rocks. Always lay them so the strata or lines are horizontal. Decide whether you are terracing or whether the rocks are to be placed randomly. Lay them on the topsoil, firming them in with soil. Next make a mixture of compost and sharp sand or grit and cover the topsoil with about six inches of this mixture. Next plant you’re alpines, taking their eventual size into account! Some suitable plants are: aubrieta, campanula, primroses, snowin-summer and arabis for spring. In summer there is a glut to choose from: Lewisia, Phlox subulata, Sedum, Sempervivum, gentian, veronica, pratia, campanula, armeria, dianthus, erodium….the list really is endless! When you have placed a plant, surround it with a collar of grit, and when all are planted, topdress the whole rockery with grit or decorative gravel of a small size. For winter colour use some pansies, trailing ivy, and plant small bulbs. Many alpine plants are evergreen also. Rockeries are a great way to observe nature, and the format is contained enough for young children to be able to help in the maintenance… aka weeding! Of course, the rockery is easily converted into a fairy garden, a bit of woodworking may be involved to create fairy doors, fairy houses or fairy bridges.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Six Parishes In Kerry Without A Priest

FOLLOWING the retirement of Fr Eoin Mangan as parish priest of Knocknagoshel, that parish becomes the sixth in the diocese of Kerry to be without a resident priest. As he made the annual announcement of clergy changes in the diocese, Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne said: “As I said before it means that in that pastoral area no priest is fulltime in their own parish. Now part of their appointment is to serve in the parish that has no resident priest. In a short few years this will be the situation in all twelve pastoral areas.” All around the diocese, parishes, people, deacons and priests, are responding to this challenge, added Bishop Ray. “We are becoming more and more aware of the calling of the laity to serve their local church community,” he said. “There are good signs that all our pastoral courses and our parish meetings are bearing fruit. In the autumn three will be ordained as permanent deacons. I am confident that though we have fewer and fewer priests, we can continue to have the fullness of parish life everywhere.” Soon it will not be possible to have a weekend Mass in every church in the diocese, added Bishop Browne. The diocesan changes take effect from July 19. Mgr Sean Hanafin returns from sabbatical to take on duties as parish priest of Ballybunion, while Fr Anthony O’Sullivan, who is on sabbatical until July 2018, will become PP of Brosnan. Fr Noel Spring moves from Ballybunion to take up appointment as parish priest of Castletownbere. Fr Gearoid

Bishop Ray Browne paid tribute to all the priests for their great service. “I admire their faith, their care of and commitment to the parish. What other group has a retirement age of 75 or 76?” he said. “Our parishes are also helped greatly by the willing assistance of our retired priests. It is wonderful how, year in year out, priests willingly agree to move parish for the good of the overall provision for all our parishes.” The first days and weeks of Easter saw the sad death of two active priests, Fr John Lucid who died suddenly and Fr Pat Moore who was ill for two years, added Bishop Browne.” They are greatly missed by their fellow priests, their many friends and by the people of Kilcummin, Duagh and Moyvane parishes. We are inspired by their lives,” he said.

Killarney Athletic Crowned Champions After 52-Year Wait The Blues just about managed to get the better of their crosstown rivals in a dramatic league final, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan Kerry Premier A League Final (Replay) Killarney Athletic 1-0 Killarney Celtic Daithí Casey’s late goal was enough to clinch the league title for Killarney Athletic on Friday night in front of a boisterous crowd in Mounthawk Park. It was an incredible night for Athletic as players, officials and supporters celebrated the first ever championship in the club’s history. As always, Celtic made us work very hard for the result and it’s a great source of pride for us that we were able to go toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the country. There’s no question that they played better football than us in both the drawn game and the replay (and probably every other time we played them

It seemed to take an eternity for Daithí to actually put the ball in the goal but when he did, there were great scenes as substitutes and fans flooded the field

this season), and they’re so well organised they’re extremely difficult to handle. Our tactic of sitting deep and hitting them on the counter served us well, even if it can be extremely frustrating to go long when we have players who are more than capable of playing out of the back. But at the end of the day, the way we set up got the job done and I suppose that’s the only thing that matters. There was certainly nothing strange or unusual about our goal. Eanna Kavanagh came out of defence and played an incisive long ball over the top and once Daithí broke free there was only going to be one outcome. It seemed to take an eternity for him to actually put the ball in the goal once he had lifted it over the keeper’s head but when he did, there were great scenes as substitutes and fans flooded the field. Celtic pressed manfully for an equaliser but I thought the old guard of Eanna, Paudie O’Connor

and Brian O’Reilly were immense in defence. I’m sure it’s of great benefit to a bunch of old fellas to have someone youthful like me alongside them at the back. (I’m 29 by the way.) Brian O’Connor was excellent as well in goal, especially in the first half when he dealt with a string of dangerous crosses, and to keep Celtic scoreless over two finals is a testament to how well he has been playing. In midfield, Shane Doolan and Michael O’Donoghue put in Trojan work as always, as did Jamie Doolan and Seán Cournane out wide. It’s difficult to be an attacker for us when we play Celtic because you’re feeding off scraps really but you knew Paudie Clifford and Daithí Casey were going to be dangerous if they got the right ball. We’ve had a very strong squad towards the end of the season and any one of our subs could have realistically started or at least came on and made a contribution. Shane Lynch deserves special mention in this regard as he started all season only to be dropped for the replay, but the management had to make a decision and as disappointed as he was, he took it well and played his part when introduced. It was a great occasion for so many former players and coaches and club officials and I don’t want to start naming people for fear of leaving someone out. Our chairman Mike O’Shea is one person I’d like to

single out for praise though. It’s a thankless job and he’s given us fantastic support all season. Michael Lindsay and JP Mullins are two guys who have given us a huge amount of help all year in terms of training and coaching and we wouldn’t have gotten over the line without them. And obviously our management team of Stuart Templeman and Alan Brady deserve a massive amount of credit for taking the job when no one else really wanted it. It’s a serious achievement to guide the club to its first title in their first season at the helm, especially when we were so poor last year. I also have to say that Celtic were incredibly gracious in defeat. I know they won’t want to hear it right now but they’ve actually given a great account of themselves this season and I’ve no doubt they’ll be back even stronger next time out. It was a great weekend to be a Blue. Hopefully we can go on now and win the double. Athletic: Brian O’Connor; Brian O’Reilly, Paudie O’Connor, Eanna Kavanagh, Adam Moynihan; Michael O’Donoghue, Shane Doolan; Jamie Doolan, Daithí Casey, Seán Cournane; Paudie Clifford. Charity Champions In The Saddle

Enda Takes A Tumble FORMER Taoiseach Enda Kenny was one of the casualties along the route of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Amidst heavy mist at Coomakista on Saturday, Mr Kenny was approaching a rest stop on the mountain pass between Waterville and Caherdaniel when he clipped the back wheel of the bicycle ahead of him and was flung from his bike But the former Taoiseach, who has completed the event on several occasions previously and who was this year taking part in aid of Derrynane Inshore Rescue, was not serously injured apart form a grazed leg and was swiftly back in action Several cyclists came off their bikes but fortunately none were seriously inured. The most serious incident concurred near Ladies View when a cyclist was thrown over a wall. The cycle was paused for around half and hour as the cyclist was treated at the scene before being taken by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry. Another accident occurred near Blackwater Bridge in which four cyclists were injured in a pile-up.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy SO IT looks like the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand is going down to the wire! The second test took was won in epic fashion last Saturday morning in Wellington, a much better game than the loss the weekend before for the tourists. Warren Gatland’s men clearly had their homework done, however they made pretty hard work of the game with all the handling errors and soft penalties given away. The Irish men again proved to be the proverbial

workhorses on the day with Tadhg Furlong and Sean O’Brien putting in epic performances. Furlong has been likened to a Sherman Tank in the New Zealand press, a true honour for the Leinster man and O’Brien affectionately known as the “Tullow Tank” was sublime. Johnny Sexton and Conor Murray put in a great shift with the latter scoring another try from close range to become the only Northern Hemisphere player to score a try in four tests against the All Blacks. A true danger man indeed. Some people will point out that Sonny Bill Williams red card was the difference however the All Blacks were their usual defiant selves and

put up a display which made you wonder who had the extra man. The first red card since 1967 for the All Blacks with Sonny Bill receiving a four-week ban, he has been vilified in the local press and has gone from proverbial hero to zero following this sending off. Here’s hoping weekends decider proved to live up to the hype and that the Lions can follow up on the series win 4 years ago in Australia. Garlands men will have their work cut out as the All Blacks will be smarting and like the injured wildcat, will pose a dangerous threat. Either way a mouthwatering decider is on the cards. Come on the British and Irish Lions!

Munster Double For Kerry

Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald

KERRY footballers completed the double of Munster championships, both senior and minor, at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last with plenty to spare. The seniors beat Cork 1-23 to 0-15 and the minors defeated Clare 2-21 to 0-3. That senior win stretches to 32 games an unbeaten run going back to 1995 when Cork defeated Kerry in the Munster final 0-15 to 1-9. The last time Cork beat Kerry in a senior championship was a year in which players such as Sean Powter, Sean O’Shea, Brian O Beaglaíoch and Michael Hurley weren’t even born. In the senior game Kerry were in devastating form at the start of the game and after half-time scoring four points in both early periods. David Moran won the throw-in, made strides towards goal to set up the opening score. That went to 4 points to no score in as many minutes. At half-time Kerry led by 4 points, 11 points to 7, but then Kerry added on 4 points without reply and the game was over as a contest. Cork needed to score a goal to get back in to contention. They had chances but failed to pull the trigger at the vital moments. Paul Geaney did score the only goal of the game in the late stages. Remarkably Kerry shot no wide in the first 42 minutes. James O’Donoghue hit that first wide with more than half the game over.

to go through the back door. Last Sunday’s win completed the five-in-a-row of Munster SFC titles for Kerry. When will they be back in the Fitzgerald Stadium in a Munster senior final? 2021 at the earliest.

CHIEF SCORERS Once again Kerry’s chief scorers were Paul Geaney who shot 1-4 from play and another point from a free. James O’Donoghue hit three points from play and four from frees, yet the return from the other four starting forwards was very poor. Kevin McCarthy and Donnchadh Walsh got no score while Mikey Geaney scored just 2 points, one from play and one from a 45. Kieran Donaghy, the remaining starting forward got just one point. A return of three points from three of the starting six is a worrying statistic. What will happen on the day that Paul Geaney and James O’Donoghue will be targeted by vigilant defenders? All six forwards worked very hard but Kerry need a better spread of scorers from the forwards whose prime job is to notch scores. Four of Cork’s starting forwards scored, but their top scorer on six points was veteran Donncha O’Connor who came on at half-time. Only two of his points came from play and the other four from frees.

STEPHEN O’BRIEN Substitute Stephen O’Brien came on for Walsh at the interval and looked impressive running at the Cork defence and scoring three fine points. Johnny Buckley came on in the 41st minute for McCarthy and did well but did not score. Midfielders had their moments with Maher of Kerry and Maguire of Cork prominent. The six Kerry defenders all had their moments while the youthful Seán Powter from Cork caught the eye. In the 50th minute Killian Young was brought on for Fionn Fitzgerald who went down with suspected concussion after an unfortunate clash. The game was held up for at least five minutes while the medical people tended to the injured Kerry captain. Eamonn Fitzmaurice said that Fitzgerald’s recovery would be monitored.

Kerry are now through to the quarterfinals at the end of the month in Croke Park with the opposition coming from the qualifiers. Meanwhile Cork have

Kerry 2-21, Clare 0-3. The minor final curtain raiser was a no contest as Kerry now stretch to 21 consecutive championship victories. They have also won 3 All Irelands in a row and on this showing are favourites to extend that winning run. They were so much in top in this 24 point win that the selectors took the liberty to take off their talented captain, Fossa’s David Clifford in the 49th minute. He had scored 6 points at that stage as he continues to impress. Top scorer was Donal O’ Sullivan from Kilgarvan who scored 2-5 from play and a further three points from frees. Kerry goalkeeper Deividas Uosis and his six defenders had an easy day throughout confining Clare to just three points. Barry O’Mahony from St Senans and Diarmuid Connor from Na Gaeil were supreme i lár na pairce while all of the six starting forwards got their names on the scoring sheets. There will be much stiffer opposition going forward for Peter Keane’s young brigade, but all the signs point to further successes.

WEEKEND OF SPORT What a great weekend of sport was on offer last weekend. First off on the Friday evening was the Kerry Premier League soccer replay between Killarney Athletic and fellow town rivals Killarney Celtic. It was looking very much like heading for extra-time and a possible penalty shootout but up pops Dáithí Casey in the 84th minute to score the match winning goal and so it stood 1-0 as Celtic failed to snatch an equaliser. This was the first time ever that Athletic won the premier league title in its 52 year life span. Founding father Dan Harrington and many more Athletic stalwarts were very happy with this result. On to Saturday and the ROK charity cycle. Weather conditions were very difficult for the 9,000 who braved it all for charity. The Fitzgerald Stadium was the mecca for in excess of 32,000 spectators for the Munster football finals.

Paudie O’Connor

Killarney Athletic’s joint captain Paudie O’Connor talks to Adam Moynihan about winning the league, former Blues heroes and the team’s WhatsApp group

Well Paudie. Can you sum up Friday night? Mustang’s or the game? Nah, look, the game was a battle but we held them out and we took our chance when it came. It’s means a lot for the club obviously… It does, yeah. Especially the older generation like Don O’Donoghue and these guys who have been around for a long time. It’s nice for them. And we have the cup to think about now. Yeah we enjoyed the weekend but we can enjoy it more once the season is finished. There’s still more silverware there for us. Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Jamie Doolan because he’d be taking me off and I’d probably end up killing him. It’s a good impression though in fairness! Take it easy! Who’s the best at Tinder? Who’s single? Lynchy? Yeah but he’s red useless at Tinder. Probably Will Courtney so. He’s quiet but when he gets on Tinder he’s a lunatic. Who’s the biggest moaner? Alan Brady. Who’s the worst-dressed? I’d say probably me. I’m not the best in the fashion stakes. Who spends the most time in the gym? Probably Pauly O’Donoghue. He’s a bit of a beast that fella. If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for Athletic, who would it be? JP O’Sullivan. He was a good guy to go into battle with. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? Mark Pyne. He might do nothing for 89 minutes and then score the winner. He scored a lot of important goals for Athletic and you need a player like that to be successful. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? It’s a toss-up between Martin Beckett and Conor Spellman. If you had to transfer to another Killarney club, who would it be? I’d retire. What’s your proudest sporting moment? Last Friday night. And the most embarrassing? Monday night in the seven-a-side after a weekend of celebrations. If you had to compare yourself to a professional

soccer player, who would it be? Jamie Carragher. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? Table tennis. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? Robbie Keane’s goal against Germany in 2002. We were all in the Vintage. Do you have any nicknames? Mick O’Connell calls me Bambi because I was always falling over when I started playing for Athletic. A few people call me P.O. as well but that’s it. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? WhatsApp. The group? Yeah the Blues group. It’s ridiculous. It’d want to be closed down. Shane Doolan is relentless. What’s your most used emoji?

What’s the best show on TV? Love Island. The boys were on about it. I haven’t seen it… Oh you’ve got to get on it, yeah. What’s your favourite song at the moment? Blue by Eiffel 65 but we’re getting sick of it by this stage.

Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Kenny Dwyer. Who’s that? He’s from Kilcummin. He’s a bit of a local legend. What would you have for your last meal? My mom’s Irish stew. Who would play you in a movie about your life? Steve Buscemi. And last one: can you tell me a joke? How do you find Will Smith in the snow? I don’t know. Look for fresh prints. Good one! Thanks Paudie. No bother!

Sport Munster Final

07.07.17 Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: MacMonagle Photography

Munster Final Magic IT WAS as if the town didn’t bother sleeping all weekend. The carnival atmosphere of Saturday’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle celebrations blended seamlessly into Munster final day, and it was as if those familiar stalls bedecked with green and gold and red and white had sprung up overnight. Armies of fans clad in their county colours had started their steady march through the streets from early Sunday morning intent on seeing time-old adversaries Kerry and Cork do battle in the Munster senior football final and of course witness the Kingdom and the Banner County pitted against one another in the minor showdown. While the one-sided senior final will have been a disappointment for some (not least for the Cork fans as they headed back across the county bounds), Kerry’s success was sweet as captain Fionn Fitzgerald and Johnny Buckley hoisted the cup aloft before 31,836 spectators following their 11-point victory. The Kingdom were on top throughout and cruised to victory with ten different players finding the target as they brushed the Rebels aside with ease. The were well on their way to their 79th Munster title when they led by 0-11 to 0-07 at the interval having played against the breeze at Fitzgerald Stadium. From the get-go Paul Geaney was rampant, shooting a couple of points and setting up his cousin Mikey for a fine score, with James O’Donoghue also hitting the target.

Key Role For Clodagh

BRAVE Clodagh O’Shea played a crucial role at Sunday’s Munster senior football final as she led the Kerry team onto the pitch. Clodagh, who has been battling illness since being diagnosed with kidney disease in 2015, received a kidney from her father Tim before Christmas. The six-year-old has spent much of the year so far at Temple Street

Children’s Hospital in Dublin. However on Sunday she was determined to fly the green and gold flag high as she was special guest of the Kerry team. Clodagh held hands with Kerry captain Fionn Fitzgerald as the team exited the tunnel at Fitzgerald Stadium before almost 32,000 spectators. Pic: Eamonn Keogh

Munster Final

Minor Dominance A TWENTY-FOUR-POINT winning margin saw the Kerry minors triumph in the Electric Ireland Munster MFC final, Kerry 2-21, Clare 0-3. When Kildare scored a two-point All-Ireland quarterfinal win over the Kerry minors in 2013, few could have foreseen that more than three seasons of Kerry dominance would ensue. Jack O’Connor replaced Mickey Ned O’Sullivan at the helm that autumn, delivering two Munster and two AllIreland titles before moving onto

steer the under-21s. Peter Keane stepped into his shoes and both their provincial and AllIreland crowns were retained in 2016. Indeed, no team came within six points of Kerry last year. Not since Kerry’s 4-17 to 0-2 thumping of Tipperary in 1946 has a Munster minor football decider been so one-sided. David Clifford, the provider of 2-8 during the semi-final victory on Cork turf, helped himself to six points here before being withdrawn in the 49th minute.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

Following on from the recent meeting of Lough Lein Working Group, the water quality documents make interesting reading- a brief synopsis is as follows; Firstly, monitoring has not been as intensive as former years owing to a number of factors including retirements/ samples having to be sent outside county / economic pressure. At least monthly monitoring is taking place on principal sites. The health of a lake is measured by a series of parameters at various monitoring points - symptom parameters include Chlorophyll and Transparency, these two change depending on the amount of algae in water, the greater the amount of algae matter in the water means the less you will see through the water hence transparency is affected. Water Transparency (Mean Readings) for 2016 on the lakes - Lough Lein was

to a depth of 3.4 meters, Muckross Lake was 5.9 meters, Upper Lake was 4.2 meters, Lough Guitane was 4.8 meters. Nutrients entering the lake is also another important factor and the estimates for 2016 are as follows - Phosphorous lake inputs for Lough Lein. Flesk River accounts for approx. 62.9%, Folly Stream 6.3%, Deenagh River 6.8%, Long Range 23.9%. Finally, a quick reminder of our upcoming juvenile outing at Barryfinny lake on Friday night the 14th July commencing at 6pm - fishing until 9pm.

MUNSTER FINALS: What an experience for our boys and their families last Saturday in Limerick. Our u10 boys Gaelic met Limerick in their semi-final, and Limerick went on to become overall winners, so they were up against the best of the best. The same can be said for our u12 soccer team who gave competition winners Tipperary a run for their money in their semi-final clash. Well done to all. Community Games hasn’t seen the last of these lads! Thanks to all the parents who travelled, and to the trainers for their commitment to the teams. Finally, to all the volunteers at UL - it couldn’t happen without them.

Firies Community Games

The Community Games Munster Finals took place at the weekend in University of Limerick. Firies only had one team take part and this was in Skittles U16. Tipperary proved very strong in this event leaving Firies as runners up in the competition. Well done to Ciara Kearney, Patrick Kearney, Cian Sheahan, Quinn O Connor, Ronan O Mahoney & Michael Brosnan. Carmel Sheahan managed the team and thank you to Kerri Sheahan who trained the team. It was a new sport for some of the lads and they had great fun and enjoyed the whole event. Thank you to all the parents for assisting and bringing to training and being there for the team.

Kilcummin Community Games

Kilcummin had a vast array of athletes taking part this year with 22 participants turning up on a warm Saturday morning to compete. OUR U8: athletes set the tone with Aoife Doolan, Darragh Forde, Sé Kennedy and Dean Moynihan running extremely well in their opening heats while Daniel O’ Sullivan and Daragh Keane came 3rd and 1st in their heats respectively. These two gutsy boys sailed through to the semi-finals with Daniel running superbly and Daragh Keane deservedly making the final. A superb run from the determined Daragh saw him finish 5th in the final in what was a tight race and suggests great promise from this young athlete. OUR U10S: were next with Ava Moynihan, Cillian O’ Leary and Grace O’ Sullivan all performing well in their sprints while Robbie Casey qualified for the next round coming 2nd in his heat. In the 200m Kate Rahilly ran well while her companion Leah Forde qualified from her heat. OUR U12’S: relay of Kieran Nagle, Senan Kennedy, Dan Rahilly and Cian Forde were unlucky not to make the final while these boys all ran well in their individual races also. In particular Cian Forde won his heat in style and was unlucky to miss out on a medal in his 600m final. However, this is a huge achievement for an athlete that will be in this age category again next year and will be one to watch in 12 month’s time. Clíodhna Sweeney gave a tremendous performance as usual

Paul Ince (2 - Manchester United), Paul Parker (2 - Manchester United), Paul Scholes (11 - Manchester United) and Paul Warhurst (1 - Blackburn Rovers).

Killarney Celtic

At the Killarney Rugby Club Golf Classic last Friday were Mike Fuller (KRFC), Alan Kerins (Galway), Alan Cronin, William Morgan and Paudie O’Shea (all Cork) and Junior Finnegan (KRFC).

in the sprint while her older brother Micheàl’s performance was controlled as always in the longer distance race U16. The experienced relay of Colin O’ Leary, Turlough O’ Connor, Cian Foley and Dara O’ Callaghan gave a powerful display of running in the U14 category deservedly coming home with the bronze medal to add to their collection from previous years. Colin was unlucky to miss out in the final of his sprint while Dara executed some great throws in the shot putt. Outstanding performances from Turlough O’ Connor saw him make the final and here he finished 5th in a highly rated field, undoubtedly his best performance to date in the Community Games finals. Cian Foley came 3rd in the 800m race yet again running strongly in what was an extremely competitive line up and winning Kilcummin’s only individual medal from the weekend.

SUMMER SEISIÚN: The Comhaltas Summer Seisiún shows will be hosted by 21 Munster branches this summer and will be getting underway over the next two weeks across the province. The first part of the night promises a show with depth but variety as the various aspects of Irish dancing, solo and group instrumental music and singing in both Irish and English are showcased by a resident

group of performers. After a break for tea, the evening concludes with an informal session where audiences are invited to take to the floor for a Siege of Ennis or The Walls of Limerick. Join in a song or if you play an instrument please bring it along! PREMIER LEAGUE FINAL REPLAY: Killarney Celtic 0 Killarney Athletic 1. Celtic applied all the early pressure, including a series of corners, but couldn’t make the breakthrough. Wayne Sparling was only denied through a fantastic last second tackle. That said, Brendan Falvey and an impressive Matthew Moynihan, who replaced the suspended Jamie Spillane, had to be sharp and composed to avert danger at the other end. Matt Keane shot over, while Athletic keeper Brian O’Connor did well to safely gather a great cross under pressure from Stephen Hayes. An Athletic corner late in the half for Athletic was claimed to have crossed the line, but excellent referee Derek O’Shea had already awarded a free out. It was scoreless at the break after a really exciting passage of soccer, fast and highly skilled. Celtic again dominated the second half, but couldn’t break down the Athletic defense (they were absolutely superb all through). Celtic came really close when Chris O’Leary’s header flashed just over the crossbar. Disaster struck in the 83rd minute when Paul O’Donoghue slipped a ball through to Daithi Casey, and he produced a superb finish that not even Roy Kelliher could stop. Celtic pressed hard to level matters, but it wasn’t to be. We wanted, but Athletic got it – fair enough, that’s sport. We have always been strong rivals on the field, but we never once had to worry about any juvenile teams that we sent down to Ferndale and I think they would say the same in reverse. Both teams and clubs have a huge host of mutual friends in their ranks. Warmest congratulations to Chairman Mike O’Shea, mangers Stuart Templeman and Alan Brady, and all the Athletic players and supporters. There are several of those players that have graced Kerry soccer and Athletic jerseys and wore them proudly in lean years; we were never going to hand it to ye easy but there isn’t a one of us who begrudges ye. YOUTH LEAGUE FINAL: Listowel Celtic 1 Killarney Celtic 0. Celtic had more of the play but couldn’t turn opportunities into scores, although we had a great chance in injury time. We went 1-0 down early in extra-time and just couldn’t pull it back. U17 LEAGUE FINAL: Listowel Celtic 2 Killarney Celtic 1. Evan Jones scored a cracker for us on Thursday, but unfortunately Listowel got in twice to take

the title. It was a superb performance by manager John Vermiglio and his young team, and a really good, sporting game. Congratulations to Listowel Celtic. FIXTURES: That concludes the 2016/17 season. Míle buíochas to all our wonderful volunteers, supporters, and players. Enjoy the break – we’ll be needing your help again before long.

Killarney RFC Golf Classic

Killarney RFC held its annual Golf Classic at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club at the renowned Mahony’s Point course last Friday. 46 teams of four took part and a host of sponsors supported a very well run event. The cool windy conditions could not prevent some fine scoring with 2 scores counting on each hole and 3 on the 18th. 5th Prize went to Killarney School of English. 4th prize was won by the Bowlers Garage team; 3rd prize went to Junior Finnegan’s team half of which were from Gort, Junie’s old home town. Second prize went to early pace setters with 97 points - McDonagh & Associates. First prize went to Richard Walsh & Associates on a score of 98 points. Four retired sharpshooters came in with 96 points to take home super golf bags kindly sponsored by Walsh Brothers Shoes. Longest Men’s Drive on the index one 11th hole was won by cannonball hero Denis Pio Moriarty of “Heather” at the Gap of Dunloe. Longest ladies drive was won by irrepressible supreme Mary Geaney on the 9th. Nearest the pin was Limerick hurler and gentleman golfer Mike Leahy with a super strike to within 3 feet on the 12th. Finally, the ‘hole-in-one’ was not won and nobody got to Cycle home despite Noreen Coffey striking the pin on the stunning setting of the 18th green. Fantastic food was served up by Paul Cotter and his team at the Chapel with wonder burgers provided by Flesk Meats and chicken kebabs supplied by Tim Jones Butchers. A great spread was enjoyed by all and coolly washed down by a glass of Killarney Lager from the star Brewery. Our sincere thanks to all our generous sponsors, supporters and Killarney Golf Club for making it a super day in advance of the Ring of Kerry Cycle sand the Munster Final weekend. Thanks to the committee especially hard working Junior Finnegan and Captain Ger Moynihan.

Dr Crokes

County League Div. 1 - Round 7, Dr. Crokes V St. Mary’s, Played in Lewis Road on Saturday July 1st. We are still unbeaten in the Co. League Division 1 as a result of our comprehensive win over St. Mary’s. Both sides were missing a number of players but our replacements played very well on the day and this contributed in a big way. In this game Colm Cooper made his return after injury and was a great help to the younger players in our ranks. Our opponents started brightly but the only time they led in the game was in the early minutes. We got well on top for the rest of the first quarter and indeed right through the second quarter. St. Mary’s did have a good start to the second quarter when they sent over three unanswered points. We finished the remainder of the quarter well to go in with a good lead at half time. We had the first seven scores after half time and even though our opponents never surrendered and had some good scores, they were always playing catchup. St. Mary’s were competitive to the end but we ran out easy winners when the referee blew the full-time whistle.

points from the trusted boot of Emmet O’Shea. Kilgarvan/Tuosist put two points on the board before Emmet O’Shea struck for a beautiful goal. The second half was not as entertaining as the first, however there were good performances from Harry Buckley, Darren Cronin, William O’Brien and Jack Clifford in particular. Under 14: Firies 5-15 Fossa 5-11. Fossa came out at the wrong side of a very entertaining game played on Monday evening. Excellent goals by Harry Kelly, Darren Cronin, Ryan O’Leary and 2 more crackers from Conor Horgan put Fossa in the ascendency at the break. Unfortunately, Fossa couldn’t bridge the gap in the end. Congratulations: Congratulations and well done to David Clifford who captained the Kerry Minor team to a Munster Title on Sunday. Fossa had another star on the day with Alicia Burke giving a fantastic display in the Primary games at half time in the senior final, well done Alicia.

Killarney Legion

CO. LEAGUE: Beaufort 0-11 Killarney Legion 0-11. Jamie O Sullivan dominated our scoring in the first half with a supporting cast of Billy Maguire and Thomas Moriarty. A half time lead of 8 points to 2 was a fair reflection of that half. In the second period Beaufort upped the tempo but they were assisted by some haphazard defending as we’d showed no signs of our efficient and smart first half link up play. Jamie again had us ahead in the dying minutes but Beaufort playing with renewed spirit lofted over an equalizer which they hardly would have believed was possible at half time. U14 BOYS: Killarney Legion 5-10 Keel/ Listry 1-12. The u14 boys overcame the challenge from a physically stronger combination side to register another good win in the league. Making good clever use of the ball they managed to register a fine tally on the scoreboard. Goals from Jamie Alade, Darragh Fleming and a fine haul of three from Cian ‘’Chips’’ McCann set them up nicely as well as did some disciplined defending. A side that shows great promise with some fine prospects on board. FIXTURE: Co. Championship - Killarney Legion V West Kerry, Austin Stack Park, Sun.9th.July at 2 p.m. All support greatly appreciated. KERRY’S 79TH: Congratulations to Kerry and the three amigos on playing their part in Kerry’s convincing 79th Munster crown. Well done also to Cian Gammell who collected a Munster minor medal against Clare.

Spa scored three points at the start of the second-half, Kenmare replied with a winning point. The one point win puts Kenmare District in the semi-finals. Congratulations and well done to all athletes who took part and a special word of thanks to their trainers and parents for contributing to the development of these young athletes. SENIOR FOOTBALL: Kilcummin 2-6 Currow 0-17. Goals from Ian Devane and Donal Maher complemented by three fine points from Shane McSweeney saw us lead by six points at half time. However, we capitulated in the second half and Currow ran out easy and deserving winners.
