Words: Eve Kelliher
THE excitement was palpable as pupils from primary schools across the greater Killarney area converged on Killarney Garda Station on Tuesday for the launch of the annual Killarney Garda National School Seven-A-Side football Blitz. Throw-in for the big event will be in at 9.30am on Monday in Fitzgerald Stadium. The schools battling it out for top honours will be Presentation Monastery, Scoil Bhride Loreto, Lissivigeen, Annablatha, Loughquittane, Glenbeigh, Rathmore, Fossa, St Oliver’s, Barraduff, Duagh Tiernaboul, Boher-
bue, Kenmare, Kilcummin and Cullina. Organiser Garda Edmund Walsh said: “I would like to once again thank our kind sponsors, Tom Spillane, auctioneer, Killarney, Timmy O’Sullivan, Easi Clean, Glenflesk, Tom Tobin, Killarney Trophies, Daly’s SuperValu, Killarney, McCarthy’s Londis, Rathmore, and Kerry County GAA Board “I would also like to thank the staff of Fitzgerald Stadium and all the Kerry Gardaí who make this event possible on the day as well as the pupils, teachers and parents.”

Editor's View Words: Eve Kelliher ALTHOUGH June is well and truly under way you could be forgiven for thinking the start of summer had passed us by as we all found ourselves dodging the downpours. A veritable deluge during the Ireland BikeFest parade on Sunday did little to dampen onlookers’ enthusiasm so keen were we to catch a glimpse of as many of the hundreds of motorcycles participating as we possibly could. Days later, in similar fashion, teams of eager boys and girls darted forth in between the rain showers to line out to help Killarney Gardaí launch this year’s exciting primary schools blitz. Meanwhile, Killarney Municipal District welcomed a series of new appointments during the week; see our story in this week’s edition. This month sees celebrations unfold for our friends and neighbours in Park Place Apartments, happy 10th birthday to the team. Last but not least, best wishes to all State examination students who commenced their exams on Wednesday.
Window Smashed
Ploughing
Cairn Of Peace To Be Erected In Killarney A MONUMENT to commemorate Killarney’s staging of the second ever World Ploughing Championships in 1954 is to be built and erected in the town. Wherever the international competition is held, it is established tradition for the host venue to erect a cairn of peace to mark the event but, for a variety of reasons, that didn’t happen in Killarney 63 years ago when ploughing experts from throughout the world gathered to compete at the venue in Gortroe, Fossa. But now, thanks to the initiative of the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club – organisers of the annual South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show – the cairn is finally being commissioned. Club chairman Tom Leslie enlisted the support of Mayor of Killarney and ploughing enthusiast Cllr Brendan Cronin, who secured agreement from the Killarney Municipal District Council to provide a suitable site for the development. Council engineers Kieran O’Halloran and Breda Mulryan suggest-
THERE was an attempt to break into the Dr Crokes GAA Club shop on Wednesday night. Gardaí were notified after club members discovered a window had been smashed after a rock was thrown through it. “If anyone has any information please tell someone in the club in confidence,” said a club spokesperson. “It is your club, we need to protect it.” Anna Marie McHugh, World Ploughing Championships, Kieran O’Halloran, Kerry County Council, Anna May McHugh, National Ploughing Association, Brendan Cronin, Mayor of Killarney, Tom Leslie, South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show, and Breda Mulryan, Kerry County Council.
ed four possible locations and National Ploughing Association organisers, Anna May McHugh and her daughter, Anna Marie, visited Killarney this week to visit the four sites and to nominate their preferred option. The chosen location is a green space opposite St Mary’s Cathedral, close to the entrance to Killarney National Park on Mission Road, and work will now commence on designing the cairn which will be
floodlit by night. The McHughs were formally welcomed by Mayor Brendan Cronin at a lunch reception in the International Hotel. After the lunch the group visited the farm of John O’Leary in Aghadoe which commands a spectacular view of the site in Gortroe where the 1954 Ploughing Championships were held and they then visited the four proposed sites for the cairn.
Council To Discuss Killarney Bypass Safety Concerns With TII SAFETY concerns at the Killarney Bypass were discussed at the meeting of Killarney Municipal District on Wednesday. Solutions such as a roundabout, reduction in the speed limit, and elimination of right turns were put forward. The issue was being discussed following the death of cyclist Annette Mannix last month on the bypass. The area has been an accident blackspot for years. Kerry County Council management is to meet next week with TII.

Wait Is Over For State Examination Candidates
THERE were smiles of relief in classrooms across Killarney and Kerry over the past three days as students submitted the first of their papers as part of the State examinations. The long wait was over for more than 3,700 exam candidates in this county on Wednesday morning, with 1,811 sitting the Leaving Certificate, 79 completing the Leaving Certificate Applied, and 1,867 sitting the Junior Certificate. They are among a total of 121,000 examination candidates across Ireland. The Leaving Cert, in particular, got off to a good start for higher-level English candidates, as there was a broad welcome for what was described as a “student-friendly” paper.

Pres Girls Are A Class Act WELL done to the students at St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School who made a presentation to the Killarney branch of the Irish Cancer Society. The monies were as a result of a culmination of events that took place in the school throughout the year. Daffodil Day raised a significant amount through a bake sale, staff and students donning yellow attire and a raffle with many spot prizes
from the local community. “We would like to thank the following sponsors for the prizes including; The International Hotel, Four Star Pizza, Who’s 4 Shoes?, the Kilkenny Shop, O’Donoghue Fuels, Macs Ice-Cream Parlour, Park Road Pharmacy, Killarney Cinema, Mrs Anne Byrnes, Eason and Lidl,” said organiser and teacher Vivienne Buckley. The LCVP class also held a quiz for all second year stu-
dents of the school and donated their proceeds to the Irish Cancer Society. A special note of recognition to three students, Miriam Greene, Anna Fitzgerald and Aoireann Moriarty who most selflessly donated all of their profit from their market stall to the society. “St Brigid’s is delighted to be associated with this most important organisation whose volunteers do such admirable work,” added Ms Buckley.

SIX young Kerry men have been hailed as the perfect gentlemen as they proved they have what it takes to play a key role as escorts in this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival. Jackie Healy-Rae Junior (22), Thomas Lynch (28), Joseph Meehan (24), Sean O’Connor (26), Niall O’Hara (28) and Shane Thornton (27), who already impressed through an interview process at the Glen Royal Hotel in Maynooth in April, were put through their paces over the bank holiday weekend at the annual escort boot camp along the Wild Atlantic Way in Kerry. Kilgarvan native Jackie is the son of Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae, and is looking forward to taking on the coveted role of escort at the Rose of Tralee festival which runs from August 16 to 22. “It should be something a bit different!” he told Killarney Advertiser. Jackie, together with Thomas, Castleisland, Joseph, of Doon, Tralee, Sean, Waterville and Killarney, Shane, Listowel, and London-raised Niall, whose mum is from Camp and whose dad is from Leitrim, were selected to be among the 64 Rose Escorts at this year’s festival. They had to pass a number of endurance tests and team-building exercises before they could graduate as fully-fledged escorts. The Rose of Tralee International Festival’s Communications Manager, John Drummey, said: “The Rose Escorts spent three days in Kerry where they undertook a number of gruelling, yet fun, tasks to prepare them for the festival in August. It was not because the ladies love Milk Tray but because the lads prefer Roses.” The lads had to carry out a range activities including a hike over Mount Brandon – Ireland’s second highest mountain – cliff diving, water-skiing, cycling, turf-footing, abseiling, kayaking, surfing, ironing and sewing in order to prove they will have the stamina to be a Rose Escort.
Talented Dylan In The Frame
HIS eye for a memorable photograph has ensured Dylan Clifford’s talents have been in huge demand since he first picked up a camera. Of course, Dylan has been making a mark in the greater Killarney area as a press photographer for the past 12 months and his Out & About pages, capturing Killarney’s nightlife, have been a huge hit since they made their debut in Killarney Advertiser last year. The gifted snapper has now set up Dylan Clifford Photography, “I have been doing photography over nine years as a hobby and over a year now professionally,” said Dylan. “I cover weddings, christenings and Communions as well as doing portraits and all other forms of photography. ”Dylan recently completed a four-year BA in Multimedia in Cork Institute of Technology, and has garnered experience in photography and cinematography both professionally and academically. “Over
the past year, I have worked on multiple communions, weddings and family events. I have also worked as a press photographer for the Killarney Advertiser, where I cover the nightlife of Killarney in the ‘Out and About’ section. I like to take a unique approach to my photography combining both classic styles such as film and the modern possibilities of digital.” You can contact Dylan by calling 085-7630199 or emailing Dylancliffordphoto@gmail.com or on Facebook @dylan clifford photography.

Views On The News Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her monthly column
Getting Up Early In The Morning
Taoiseach-elect Leo Varadkar.
LEO VARADKAR might have enough Kerry influence not to forget the outer reaches of his kingdom entirely. From the dawn of Leo’s life as a minister, there is of course the ambitious doctor’s stalking horse, Brendan Griffin, TD, who has been close to Varadkar from the start, and rattling Enda Kenny’s position at every opportunity. But perhaps just as important is ex-Kerryman journalist and Varadkar’s closest advisor in press matters, Nick Miller. Miller, originally from England, worked in The Kerryman between 1998 and 2001, specialising in farming, no less, and was a senior reporter with the paper before moving onto the Evening Echo where he worked about 17 months before going to the dark side as we in journalism like to call turning into a press officer, and joining Fine Gael. The former journalist has been with the Blueshirts since 2003 and has been a close to Mr Varadkar, acting as his press advisor in all his ministries if I am not mistaken. In fact, it was as press advisor during a trip to Dingle where I heard Nick’s direct praise for Brendan Griffin and how well respected by Leo he was. That was well before Leo’s ambitions be-
came clear. On that occasion, at the late Paidí O Sé tournament, Leo in a rugby scarf confessed to knowing little or nothing about Gaelic football, but said he was taking an interest as Transport, Tourism and Sport minister. So now that our Leo is head political honcho in the country, there might be plenty of reason to hope Kerry the lost Kingdom will not be over-looked, as it most surely was under Enda Kenny. One thing that irritates me about the coronation of Mr Varadkar is this chorus, mostly by men, often gay men, of how historic and “remarkable” it is the son of an immigrant and a gay man has been elected Taoiseach or leader in Ireland. There is actually very little remarkable: The Spanish De Valera (is there something about the V word we Irish like?) was not only Taoiseach in what we consider a far from liberal age, that of the 1930s – but he was also widely believed to have been “illegitimate” a fate most unlikely to bring fortune, back then. Those rumours have never been put to bed, so to speak, and even his biographers failed to nail them. The story was Dev’s father was Spanish, spelt both Valero or Valera on documents (no mar-
riage cert has been traced), but he never knew him as he either died or left before he was born and Eamon was sent to Clare to be reared by his grandmother and uncle and aunt, afterwards winning a scholarship to Blackrock College. Varadkar, the son of a wealthy doctor with a privileged background, and it is to be assumed no money worries, would have to do a lot to trump Dev’s achievement in getting where he got; it is far easier to be gay today than the son of an unmarried woman or even a widowed woman back then, I would suggest. The bottom line is Varadkar, gay or straight, is a man and a very right-wing man with a starched blue collar at that. In fact, he may even be singing from the right hymn sheet in being gay. From my experience, it is no disadvantage in advancement in a lot of powerful circles in the western world to be gay. But the gay lobby have such a great racket made of how discriminated they are, we tend to overlook this fact. Would that women could make the same racket with the same effect. Now, were a socialist woman, from a poor or less advantageous background than Leo’s, to become Taoiseach – that would be remarkable!
Kerry Airport Flying High KERRY AIRPORT is flying high and is well supported it would seem. And a good thing too given the state of the roads. The Kerry to Dublin flights need to be more frequent and are often 70% full, but need to be better supported to justify a third Dublin flight. I took the plane to Farranfore recently on a return trip into terminal one in Dublin. The Kerry flights leave from the smarter terminal two. All very well except there is a 45-minute plus walk between the two terminals. And no internal connection if you hit it, as I did, after 5pm. The stairs was blocked off with a security guard turning away people like me who never read closed signs!! It seems to me extraordinary that the long haul between the two terminals in the one airport can’t be more accessible or that there is not even a shuttle... But what was even more annoying was the fact that after lugging suitcase up and down the paths in the rain, up and down flights of stairs etc to find that the plane actually leaves from terminal one! So after the marathon walk when you are checked through terminal two boarding gate for Kerry – you board a shuttle bus to be hauled back to terminal one from where you emerged in the first place! Surely some better system for regional passengers linking with terminal one can be arranged and give us a straight run at the plane. There were other things that annoyed me – apart from coming home to rain and wind – the younger of two air hostesses on the flight was pretty snooty. I was quite taken aback by her. You must put your bag up because that is an exit, she barked just as I was sitting down. And in fairness in the small Stobart plane I had not noticed there was a door near the seat in the first place. I have a problem with my elbow and pointed out that anyway the bag probably wouldn’t fit. “I’m not lifting it, I am not insured to do that,” she said. I thought I was hearing things…not insured? Anyway, she reluctantly did help to fix it when I had done the heavy lifting. They were insured to give a hand, she explained. It was my second flight to Kerry this year and I wasn’t too enamoured with the previous hostess either. It seems to me the Aer Lingus regional staff are less happy than their counterparts on foreign flights.

From Regional Flights
to Regional Fights
ONE of the reasons I hoped Simon Coveney might succeed in becoming Taoiseach was his understanding of the Cork and Kerry regions and his background in fisheries and agriculture and his familiarity with Kerry. The divide between the Pale and the south of the country especially could not be starker. Lesser-spotted Munster, I am beginning to call this province. Even our own public representatives of which we have so many, seem to forget all about us when they go to Leinster House and all undergo collective amnesia. I had noticed something similar about MEPs many years ago. They would come back from Brussels with new hairstyles, new glasses, slicker suits and plenty of talk, but little else. There is a real need for a regional focus in Munster and I would much prefer to see a strong regional council than a Dáil. While we have a regional assembly supported by the EU, with councillors from Kerry on it, it seems to have no bark let alone teeth. I rarely hear anything about it, or even from it, despite the fact I spent many years covering its predecessor the South West Regional Authority. I can’t understand why the case has not been made for a directly elected South West Munster Regional Council. Certainly I hear you see this would just add a new layer to too many TDs and senators already, but were the number of Oireachtas members to be reduced in Leinster House then there would be room for such an institution with better advocates and a common interest. Kerry especially is regarded as some sort of not-very-serious place – it usually evokes a laugh and then there is the expectation that if we don’t always amuse, then we must surely scandalise or entertain. I was listening to Philip King recently at Kerry County Council. A Cork man with a love of Kerry, he lives in Dingle. He spoke movingly of how communities like Dingle and west Kerry are being “hollowed out” – the well-educated young people are all leaving and not coming back so there was only the very old and the very young, was King’s point. I was most moved by his speech – it is what we have always known, but it needed to be said plainly and with passion. Few of us now can expect our children or our grandchildren to be near us. It is a way of life in Kerry. And we have accepted it, but that does not make it right. I can’t for the life of me understand why it has taken so long to improve the road network both to and within Kerry – it is the key to everything. It takes an hour or an hour and a half to leave the county. Yet generations of TDs and senators and councillors have failed to deliver a vital quicker service. Had we a stronger bond with Cork and Limerick it would be done and dusted by now. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, though, the roads around Killarney are simply a disgrace at the moment. The road to Ross Castle is all to one side, and like the Lartigue Railway, on horse carriage bus and car you would want to make sure to balance the passengers or they would keel over. As for the Mission Road: it is in such a shocking Third Wold condition it is truly living up to its name.
I was most moved by his speech – it is what we have always known, but it needed to be said plainly and with passion

New Staff Appointments In Killarney Municipal District WHILE councillors met in a newly revamped chamber at the town hall for the Killarney Municipal District meeting on Wednesday, there has also been a change in staffing in the district. The following changes in staffing in the Killarney Municipal District have come into effect this week: Maria Ní Cheallaigh, formerly of Killarney Town Council, becomes Tourism and Economic Development Officer, based in Killarney. Eileen O’Donoghue, a native of Killarney and formerly of Cork County Council, becomes the new Killarney Municipal District Officer. John Ahern, formerly of Water Services with Kerry County Council takes up the role of Killarney Municipal District Senior Executive
Engineer. Killarney Municipal District manager, Angela McAllen and Cathaoirleach, Brendan Cronin this week welcomed the new members of the Killarney Municipal District team to the Town Hall. All of the staff will be based at the Killarney Municipal District Offices, Town Hall. Eileen O’Donoghue, the new Killarney Municipal District Officer, said: “We each look forward to our new roles and hope to continue the strong tradition of service to the public by the Killarney Municipal District staff in the Town Hall. Together with the elected members we will work together for the benefit of everyone in the Killarney Municipal District.”
Celebrations
Happy Birthday To Park Place Apartments
Celebrating the 10th birthday of Park Place Apartments on High Street on Thursday were manager Paul O’Neill, staff and friends of the business.
KERRY FINE GAEL TD Brendan Griffin is widely expected to secure a junior ministry when soon-to-be-elected Taoiseach Leo Varadkar takes office. The pair have been friends since their days in Young Fine Gael and Deputy Griffin is regarded as a strong contender for a ministry. The Kerry TD was one of the first to call on Enda Kenny to step down as Taoiseach last year. “Obviously it would be a great honour to be called to serve at ministerial level and I would hope that such a position would result in a greater chance of positive results for Kerry,” he told Killarney Advertiser.
“Ultimately, however, the choosing of ministers and ministers of state is entirely the prerogative of the incoming Taoiseach and there are many talented individuals in the Fine Gael ranks competing for a very limited number of vacancies. “Regardless of the outcome, I am confident of having significantly enhanced influence on behalf of the people of Kerry and that Leo as Taoiseach will continue to be a good friend to Kerry, as he has proven to be in the past through his work as a minister, when he delivered many significant improvements for Kerry.” Inset: Deputy Brendan Griffin.
Breda Blossoms As New Kerry Rose EVERYTHING has been coming up roses for Breda O’Mahony from Rathmore. Breda, who was crowned the new Kerry Rose at the weekend, is looking forward to representing the Kingdom in the Dome during the 2017 Rose of Tralee International Festival in August. “It’s a dream come true,” said Breda, who was selected from 24 entrants at the Kerry Rose Selection in Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee, on Friday.
The 27-year-old is a lecturer in St Angela’s College, Sligo, having previously been a post-primary teacher in Dublin. She graduated with a degree in Home Economics and Religious Education. Breda says she didn’t expect to hear Daithi O Se announce her name. Some 64 Roses will take part in the 2017 Rose of Tralee International Festival from August 16 to 22, but the Kerry Rose is the only one guaranteed to appear on the live TV shows in the Dome.
Mayor Voices Concern For Patients & Families
THE closure of a five-bed ward in St Columbanus Home sparked outrage with Killarney’s mayor Councillor Brendan Cronin branding the situation “a total disgrace”. But the Health Service Executive has insisted that the closure of the Heather Ward is temporary and can be reversed if there is a demand for more beds. Councillor Cronin, told Killarney Advertiser: “This is a facility used by elderly or longstay patients and the closure is shocking. Numer-
ous Killarney-based families are looking for respite care for family members and are being told that there are no available beds. As far as Killarney is concerned the loss of one bed is dreadful but the loss of five is a total disgrace.” The Health Service Executive stated: “Cork Kerry Community Healthcare is happy to confirm that there is no overall reduction in the number of beds at the facility. However, there has been a reduced level of demand for beds in recent weeks.”

WALKERS WELCOME Every year we get lots of walkers taking part in the Run Killarney Half Marathon and the 10K. Walkers enjoy the opportunity to walk the route on the Ring of Kerry Road when the road is closed to traffic. Walkers would not get the opportunity to walk this route usually as the road would be too busy with buses and heavy traffic. No matter how long it takes you all event services will be available to runners and walkers. So if you would rather walk than run sign up now. Remember that a mile is still a mile regardless of the pace!!!
MOTIVATION TIPS FROM CHRIS GRAYSON EXPERT HALF MARATHON RUNNER ‘It’s six weeks to go, plenty of time to get some good training in. It is important over the last few weeks to focus and keep motivated. Most runners go through a stage where they can lack motivation (lose their mojo) don’t worry its totally normal! Keep reminders of why you are doing this and keep thinking about how good you will feel after the run. My advice is to run with a group, as friends can often be the best motivators or to go to your favourite place to run, get some motivational music on and hit the road. Try mixing up your training by using different routes and terrain because not only as this keeps it interesting and exciting it will also lessen the impact that road running can impact on the body. Here in Kerry we are spoilt for choice with the magnificent Killarney national park, the mighty Gap of Dunlop (my favourite place!) or one of our beautiful beaches to trot a few miles out whilst admiring the
views these places have to offer. Believe me I never get bored by doing this! Using a GPS watch or download one of the many mobile phone apps for runners (for example) Strava or MapMyRun can help your training in a huge way. By tracking your distance, pace, calories burned, speed and many more features adds so much depth and fun to your training. You can then download your runs to see your progress, elevation of the run, splits of miles and much more. These apps and watches also allow you to share progress and connect with other likeminded people via social media and is a great way of making new friends too. If you can’t seem to find your mojo no matter what you do, take some time off. A few days rest will revive you both mentally and physically and the chances are you’ll miss lacing up the runners and will be raring to go after this time.

Emotions can wreak havoc on an investor’s ability to build long-term wealth. Research company Dalbar Inc. found that over the most recent 20-year period, from 1991-2010, the average stock fund returned 9.9% annually, while the average stock fund investor earned only 3.8%. Great investors throughout history have understood that building long-term wealth requires the ability to control one’s emotions and avoid self-destructive investor behaviour.
Why does this happen? Here are some possible explanations Regret Theory: Fear of regret, or simply regret theory deals with the emotional reaction people experience after realizing they’ve made an error in judgment. Faced with the prospect of selling a stock, investors become emotionally affected by the price at which they purchased the stock. So, they avoid selling it as a way to avoid the regret of having made a bad investment. Mental Accounting: Humans have a tendency to place particular events into mental compartments and the difference between these compartments sometimes impacts our behaviour more than the events themselves. Prospect/Loss-Aversion Theory: It doesn’t take a neurosurgeon to know that people prefer a sure investment return to an uncertain one – we want to get paid for taking on any extra risk. That’s pretty reasonable. Here’s the strange part! Prospect theory suggests people express a different degree of emotion towards gains than towards losses. Individuals are more stressed by prospective losses than they are happy from equal gains. Anchoring: In the absence of better or new information, investors often assume that the market price is the correct price. People tend to place too much credence in recent market
views, opinions and events, and mistakenly extrapolate recent trends that differ from historical, long-term averages and probabilities. Over-/Under-Reacting: Investors get optimistic when the market goes up, assuming it will continue to do so. Conversely, investors become extremely pessimistic during downturns. A consequence of anchoring, or placing too much importance on recent events while ignoring historical data, is an overor under-reaction to market events which results in prices falling too much on bad news and rising too much on good news. Over-Confidence: People generally rate themselves as being above average in their abilities. They also overestimate the precision of their knowledge and their knowledge relative to others. Many investors believe they can consistently time the market, but in reality there’s an overwhelming amount of evidence that proves otherwise. Over confidence results in excess trades, with trading costs denting profits.
What to do? Implement an investment strategy with your financial advisor that is well thought out and sticking to it may help you avoid many of these common investing mistakes.

Ireland Bikefest Roars Into Town
SOME 50,000 biker fans of all ages revved up for action over the course of three days at Ireland BikeFest at The Gleneagle during the bank holiday weekend. A downpour failed utterly to dampen spirits on Sunday when motorcycles of all descriptions rolled through the town in the eagerly anticipated BikeFest Parade. Also on Sunday, there was a coveted prize on home ground for Joe Neeson from Killarney whose Harley Davidson motorbike won the vintage section at Ireland BikeFest. This year’s festival welcomed a record number of woman bikers from all over the world. To celebrate the growing popularity of biking among women, the Ladies of Harley® hosted two events – a meet and greet at The Brehon on Saturday and a Ladies of Harley® rideout on Sunday. Ladies of Harley® promotes female participation in motorcycling worldwide. “It can be daunting for anyone starting out, but it is especially daunting for women who may not know someone that shares their interest,” said Ladies of Harley® representative Fiona Carroll. “The number of women’s motorcycle groups is growing, and social media is helping to connect us all. Women are embracing biking like never before and we are encouraging and helping each other in any way that we can.” Last but not least, our four-legged friends got to enjoy the spotlight also as chic canines and their owners paraded in the INEC for the Ireland BikeFest dog show. Ireland BikeFest Killarney is one of Europe’s largest free, open biker festivals.
Several hundred bikers from all over Europe travel along ‘Mission Road’ Killarney on Sunday for the Ireland Bikefest parade. After touring ‘Indian file’ around the town the bikers headed back to the INEC to take part in the custom bike show competition.

WHEN the Aidan O’Brien-trained Wings Of Eagles romped to victory in the prestigious Epsom Derby last Saturday, it sparked great celebrations at Killarney Racecourse where there was a special interest in the big event. The 40/1 rank outsider caused a major sensation when he powered past the post in the elite event but it came as no huge surprise to those monitoring the proceedings from the Ross Road track where Wings Of Eagles won his maiden race last summer. The Epsom success provided O’Brien with a sixth Derby winner but the impressive colt had already caught the eye and tasted success in the competitive Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden in Killarney last August. A field of 18 lined up at the start at Epsom but

Wings Of Eagles was the toast of Killarney at the finishing post, edging out the fancied Cliffs of Moher with the short odds favourite Cracksman, piloted Frankie Dettori, beaten into third. He was the biggest outsider to win the Derby for four decades and the first winner at double-figure odds since 1998. “It was a fantastic win and we were all absolutely delighted to see it,” said Killarney Race Company Chairman Gerard Coughlan. “It just goes to prove the great quality of the maiden in Killarney and Aidan O’Brien certainly targets this course as a great test for his good horses.” Wings Of Eagles is now likely to compete in the Irish Derby in The Curragh on July 1 where the form of both the English and French derbies could be put to the test.

STEP it out with Killarney Walking Festival as it hosts a charity walk and a special sun “set” on Strickeen this evening, Friday, June 9. Proceeds of the event will go to the Kerry Parents & Friends “Buy a Bus” fund. The charity Kerry Parents and Friends has played an enormous role in the lives of families in Kerry, living with intellectual difficulties. The “Buy a Bus” fund is the initiative of Agnes Rooney, whose sister Mairead – cared for full-time by Agnes since their mother’s passing in 2015 – has Down’s syndrome, and has been helped by the group for decades. Agnes herself admits she’d be lost without the association’s assistance, which has led to her ongoing attempt to raise €60,000 to purchase a wheelchair-accessible bus for the charity. To date the present fleet of 17 buses are deteriorating with no funding for replacement. “These buses take Mairead and her friends to work, home, hospital appointments, social training, respite and holidays. They travel all over Kerry and truly support them and their families in ways that the greater community may not understand,” said Agnes. The charity walk departs Kate Kearney’s Cottage at the entrance to the Gap of Dunloe, at 7.30pm. Walkers will be asked to dance an entire Kerry polka on the summit, just bring a tin whistle and a bodhrán. The “Buy a Bus” campaign is also one of the beneficiaries of the Ring of Kerry Avril Rooney, Marie Kehoe-O’Sullivan, Agnes Rooney, Kayla and Ciara Roche, Denis O’Sullivan, John Charity Cycle this year. A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
War Of Words Erupts On Subject Of Killarney Roads Comment
Words: Anne Lucey
PERHAPS it was the move back to the old chamber in the town hall and the spirit of over 100 years of debate awakened but a furious row broke out at Wednesday’s meeting of the Killarney council with cathaoirleach of Killarney Brendan Cronin telling two councillors who raised questions about the state of the roads in Killarney, and that the exceptional town was not getting its fair share of funding “to form a new party called the negative alliance.” However, Cllr Donal Grady said there was no prouder Killarney man than himself. He would not be muzzled when he spotted issues that needed addressing. There was so much grass now growing on footpaths in Killarney what jarvey horses were in the town could graze on them he said and was able to produce pictures of the grassed margins in some housing estates for the media. Ross Road was in an awful state; €640,000 had always been set aside for cleaning Killarney – now that
sum had to clean all the other towns and villages as well as Killarney, he pointed out. Cllr Maura Healy-Rae said only two roads crews now served the district where there had once been six roads crews – and that six was before Castleisland was included in the new municipal district. “You’d drown in the potholes,” she said. However, Cllr Brendan Cronin rounded on both councillors saying, he heard only praise about Killarney, a tremendous amount of work was being carried out by the MD. “The two of ye now would be better off to formally launch yerselves as the negative alliance!” Cllr Cronin charged. A shouting match ensued and former footballer Cllr Michael Gleeson said criticising Killarney before the Tidy Towns judges visited was like downing the Kerry Team before and All-Ireland. Cllr Grady said Cllr Cronin (who pointed out he was 18 years a coun-

cillor) had only ever been passing through the town; and but for the wonderful volunteers and meitheals there were very few staff now to see to the upkeep of Killarney, including only one gardener. “I have good cause to protect Killarney because if I don’t, no one else will,” said Cllr Grady, who was born
in the heart of the town and is a former mayor of Killarney. Cllr Maura Healy-Rae told the chairman he was using bully tactics and was name calling! All she was doing was making a specific point, and she rejected his insinuations about negativity. Make yourself at home.
Bodies, Aircraft Parts Found In Search For Burmese Military Plane A Y-8 MILITARY plane vanished on its way to Yangon in Burma, reports Reuters. A navy ship found bodies and aircraft parts in the seas off Burma while searching on Thursday for a military transport plane carrying 120 people, a spokesman said. The Chinese-made Y-8 turboprop aircraft disappeared Wednesday afternoon about a half-hour after leaving Myeik, also known as Mergui, for Yangon on a route that would have taken it over the An-
daman Sea. It was raining, but not heavily, at the time. Nine naval ships, five army aircraft and three helicopters were searching for the plane Thursday morning, a military spokesman said. Gen. Myat Min Oo said the ship found two life jackets, three bodies and a tire that was part of an aircraft wheel. The bodies were of a man, a woman and a child. The wreckage was found in the sea west of the town of Laung Lone. The plane carried 106 passengers
Public Sector Workers In Line For Pay Hikes Of Up To 10% THE Government and public service unions have reached a draft agreement on a pay deal to succeed the Lansdowne Road Agreement. RTÉ reports that almost 250,000 public sector workers recruited before 2013 are set to receive pay hikes of between 6.2% and 7.4% over the next three years, and that about 50,000 recruited after 2013 will receive increases of between 7%
and 10% over the same time period. This latter group has less generous pension entitlements than their colleagues with longer service. Employees with smaller pensions will get the biggest pay increases. The pension levy introduced in 2009 will also be abolished, with public sector workers instead making higher pension contributions on a phased basis. The deal is reported to be worth €880m.
— mostly families of military personnel — and 14 crew members. Fifteen of the passengers were children. It is not unusual for such flights to carry civilians to offset transportation costs for military families stationed in the somewhat remote south. An announcement posted on the Facebook page of the commander of the military, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, said contact was lost when the plane was believed to be about 20 miles to the west of Da-
wei, formerly known as Tavoy. The military said Myanmar received the Y-8 plane in March last year, and since then it had logged 809 flying hours. The area is about 440 miles north of the last primary radar contact with Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which vanished on a flight from Malaysia to Beijing on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board. That plane is believed to have flown far off course and crashed into a remote area of the southern Indian Ocean.

Narrow Escape For Kerry Family A FAMILY from Tralee were just moments away from the terror attacks in London at the weekend. Donal Corcoran, his wife and their seven-year-old twins were close to the scene where eight people were murdered and dozens injured on Saturday. The family, who are now home safe and well, had been on
London for the weekend and had returned to their hotel room in the Premier Inn on Borough Market on Saturday night at the time when the attacks occurred. Earlier that evening they had dined at the same pub where the terrorists crashed before going on the rampage with knives.

Three Men Arrested In London Bridge Attack Terror Swoop ARMED police arrested three more people in raids on Wednesday night in connection with the London Bridge terror attack. At 10pm on Wednesday officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, supported by firearms officers, arrested two men on a street in Ilford. Eight people were killed in the London Bridge terror attack. A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of the preparation of terrorist acts (contrary section 5 Terrorism Act 2006) and the other, aged 33, was arrested for on suspicion of possession with intent to supply controlled drugs.
A third man was later arrested after a warrant was carried out at a residential address in Ilford. Khuram Butt and Rachid Redouane were shot dead during their attack. The man, aged 29, was also arrested suspicion of the preparation of terrorist acts (contrary section 5 Terrorism Act 2006). All three men have been taken into custody at a south London police station under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act. Searches of the residential address in Ilford, as well as a business address in Ilford are ongoing.
UK General Election 2017: Voters To Go To The Polls POLLS opened at 7am yesterday and counting started once voting ended at 10pm last night. A total of 650 Westminster MPs will be elected, with about 46.9 million people registered to vote. That is up from the last general election, in 2015, when there were 46.4 million registered voters. Some votes had already been cast, through postal voting, which accounted for 16.4% of the total electorate at the 2015 general election. People with an undelivered postal vote were still able to deliver it by hand to their lo-
cal polling station yesterday. Police have increased security at polling stations, including patrols by armed officers in some areas, following the recent terror attacks. The final results are expected this afternoon. Unusually, no local elections are taking place at the same time, so results might come through earlier than in recent general elections. In 2015 the first seat to declare was Houghton and Sunderland South, at 22:48 BST. To form a majority in the House of Commons one party must win 326 seats.
FORMER FBI director James Comey on Thursday accused President Donald Trump of firing him to try to undermine the bureau’s investigation into possible collusion between his 2016 presidential campaign team and Russia, according to Reuters. In the most eagerly anticipated US congressional hearing in years, Comey told lawmakers the Trump administration had lied and defamed him and the FBI after the president dismissed him on May 9. “During more than two hours of testimony, Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee he believed Trump had directed him to drop an FBI probe into the Republican president’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn as part of the broader Russia investigation,” reports Reuters. “Comey nevertheless did not make any major new revelations about alleged links between Trump or his associates and Russia, an issue that has dogged the president’s first months in office and distracted from his policy goals such as overhauling the U.S. healthcare system and making tax cuts. “Comey painted a picture of an overbearing president who he did not trust and who pressured him to stop the FBI investigating Flynn.
“After Trump fired Comey, the administration gave differing reasons for his dismissal. Trump later contradicted his own staff and acknowledged on May 11 he fired Comey because of the Russia probe.” Asked why he thought Trump fired him, Comey said he did not know for sure. But he added: “Again, I take the president’s words. I know I was fired because of something about the way I was conducting the Russia investigation was in some way putting pressure on him, in some way irritating him, and he decided to fire me because of that.” But Comey would not say whether he thought the president sought to obstruct justice but did say that Flynn was “in legal jeopardy” with the FBI investigation. “I don’t think it’s for me to say whether the conversation I had with the president was an effort to obstruct. I took it as a very disturbing thing, very concerning,” Comey told the committee. Trump critics say that any efforts by the president to hinder an FBI probe could amount to obstruction of justice. Such an offense potentially could lead to Trump being impeached by Congress, although the Republicans who control the Senate and House of Representatives have shown little appetite for such a move.

The Malton Rolls Out Red Carpet THE MALTON was the location last Friday for June’s edition of the Sean Moncrieff show on Newstalk 106FM. Sean Moncrieff hosted his popular Movies and Booze slot from 2pm until 4pm beneath the gilt-domed ceiling of The Garden Room restaurant. With a live audience in attendance,
guests enjoyed a day of live music, bike action from the Killarney Bike Fest and some familiar local personalities. Throughout the broadcast, Moncrieff was joined by wine expert Jean Smullen and broadcaster and film critic Sarina Bellissimo and the afternoon was finished off with a wine tasting event in the hotel.

Walkers Get Into Their Stride To Remember Eileen FRIENDS and family of the late Eileen Cronin, Cronin’s Yard, gathered for the first Memorial Walk to honour Eileen’s wonderful life and hospitality given to climbers, members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, Gardaí Siochána, and great friends, before and after their ascent of The MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. June 8 was Eileen’s birthday so it was fitting tribute that so many people turned out on what was a very challenging and wet day on Cnoc na Péiste. John and Esther Cronin, Cronin’s Yard Tea Rooms supplied the “tay and brack” and welcome after the climb, as Eileen had done for so many years. Eileen’s son John Cronin led the walk and Mike Ward laid a bouquet of flowers at the grotto on the summit of Cruach Mór.

‘Wake Up, Ireland, Re Deer Lodge, Before It’s Too Late!’ Mental Health Unit AS A British national now living in Ireland I was enraged and deeply saddened by the horrendous terrorist attacks that took place in Manchester on Monday, May 22. Seeing children being killed and hearing of a girl losing her legs was sickening. Twenty-two killed and over a hundred people were injured. I completely agree with Michael Healy-Rae’s letter to the Editor on May 26 in the Killarney Advertiser that said “Ireland must wake up to the fact we are not exempt from such acts of terror”. Last Saturday I watched in total horror three terror attacks unfold live on Sky News in less than two hours. The attacks in London have killed eight so far (eighteen still remain in critical condition) and forty-eight were injured. Everyone is in a state of revulsion at this evil and rightly so. Let me be clear – I am not against Muslims but very against this sick evil extremist ideology that seeks to kill others. I know there are good and bad people in every community and I highly commend good Muslims like Dr Majid, Head Surgeon of Manchester Hospital, who worked for 12 hours straight operating on a child to take out all the nails and shrapnel. He described this as “horrific” and he too was angry that this kind of atrocity could be done. I could see the pain in his eyes and I felt very sorry for him. He was on a video last week on www.bbc.co.uk
Another Muslim, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, has condemned the London attacks very strongly and described them as “evil and sick” and that he too is angry that Muslims could do this in the name of Islam. He also said that London “is a truly cosmopolitan city”. The British Prime Minister Theresa May has declared “enough is enough and that the UK is far too tolerant of Islamic extremism”. On Monday night a top police officer in the UK confirmed what I have recently realised – that the police need a radical new strategy to counter this terror. Tough action must be implemented. Evil must be stopped in its tracks with fierce determination and strength. My point is this – having watched recently the programme on 3e “Ireland’s terror threat” and now finding out on (June 5) that the second jihadi attacker in London Rachid Redouane was found to have previously lived in Dublin, Ireland must now wake up to the very real threat of Islamic terror here. I find this frightening and I do not want Ireland to suffer in the way the UK has. I want everyone to be protected and safe. Everyone. Of all faiths and none. I urge the Irish Government not to tolerate extremism in any form. Let us pray also for great wisdom for our new Taoiseach-elect Leo Varadkar. Killarney reader, Name supplied
I REFER to the guided tour of Deer Lodge the Minister of State with Responsibility for Mental Health, Ms Helen McEntee, received on her recent visit to Kerry. The nursing staff of Kerry Mental Health Service are completely opposed to the staffing model being imposed by the HSE within Deer Lodge, and are very reluctant to move into the unit under the current proposed staffing regime. The staffing model proposed of one third HCA to two third nursing staff is one more in keeping with the old age services than the mental health services, and the PNA believe this would be a retrograde step and a throwback to the pre 1930s era of low skill attendant/ keeper era with a custodial model of care that would not be in keeping with A Vision for Change and a higher skill modern therapeutic, rehabilitative, recovery model of care with the emphasis on the goal of discharge back to a community setting with supports. Deer Lodge will include a dedicated 10-bed unit for residents with endur-
ing mental illness with risk, including a forensic history. Residents with episodes of aggression/challenging behaviour will be cared for in this unit. The need for professionally trained clinical staff in the prevention, control and management of violence and aggression including professional restraint is vital. The rostering of clinically untrained staff to such a unit in the place of nurses would be unsafe from a health and safety viewpoint will result in higher number of adverse incidents, assaults and injuries to both residents and staff coupled with an environment of fear and tension prevailing within the unit. Deer Lodge will have a dedicated 10bed unit for rehabilitation. Under this model of care based on rehabilitation and recovery outlined and envisaged in A Vision for Change, the need for professionally trained staff with a background in rehabilitation and recovery is vital. They Say Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction… Apophenia is the human tendency to perceive meaningful patterns in random data and it occurs in a variety of guises, says Trevor O’Donoghue
WE’VE all had the experience of someone calling on the phone just when we were thinking about them, or meeting someone we haven’t seen for ages just after they popped into our minds. Or what about somebody passing on just as the clock stops, or the weather does something strange, or a bird flies into the house and won’t leave. The coincidence can seem remarkable and we often assign a paranormal significance to it, as if randomness or chance can’t possibly be enough to explain the event. But how many times have you thought about someone and they haven’t rung, or you haven’t met them. You don’t give it a second thought and so it doesn’t register in your consciousness. I’ve lost count as to how many times I had
to shunt a bird out of the house after it flew in a window. Thankfully, no one close to me has died while I was doing it and so I haven’t been tempted to lend any significance to it. Apophenia is the human tendency to perceive meaningful patterns in random data and it occurs in a variety of guises. Gamblers seeing patterns in the fall of the cards or the spinning of a roulette wheel, children picking out patterns in clouds, or a face in the grain of a timber door, or finding Jesus staring up from a slice of toast at breakfast are other well known examples. They say that truth is stranger than fiction, I would love to hear about any strange experiences or encounters that readers may have had that made you think twice. Be Pro Therapy Offers Wide Variety Of Body And Facial Therapies BE Pro Therapy opened in Killarney in January 2017, when Elaine Burke, a native of North Cork, moved to the area having lived abroad for many years. As an accomplished and experienced Massage & Physical Therapist and Cosmetic Acupuncturist with over 12 years’ experience, she is delighted to be able to offer her services in Killarney. BE Pro Therapy offers a wide variety of both body and facial therapies. Bodywork therapies will be customised on an individual basis and Elaine works with male and female clients of all ages, and children. She treats athletes to office workers, elderly and post-operative patients and more. Neuromuscular Physical Therapy combines a mixture of hands-on massage, trigger
point therapy, soft tissue release, myofascial release and Muscle Energy Techniques to relieve acute or chronic pain for a variety of conditions such a sciatica, frozen shoulder, TMJ and countless other musculoskeletal conditions. Elaine specialises in pain management and through therapy and advice the aim is to improve people’s quality of life, allow them to become more active and pain free and to replace traditional painkillers and drugs with these alternative therapies. Dry needling is one of the most popular services and uses acupuncture needles to reduce pain, swelling and expedite any recovery from muscular pain and dysfunction and is used in conjunction with Neuromuscular Physical Therapy to maximize results.
BE Pro Therapy specialises in massage for those suffering from stress, anxiety, depression and bereavement by blending therapeutic and relaxing massage techniques in a private, peaceful environment where one can experience both physical and emotional relief. It’s important to identify and correct any postural misalignment and muscular issues as early as possible in life and Elaine works on many younger children and teenagers who may be experiencing complications due to flat feet, for example. Along with therapy and correctional advice to work on at home or with other specialists where needed, it can provide a long-term alternative solution for progressing forward with the best possible chance for enhanced mobility, strength and performance. Elaine Burke, BE Pro Therapy.
Cosmetic Acupuncture BE Pro Therapy is an advocate for only using 100% truly natural products, that are not only natural but are extremely effective for all skin types. Cosmetic Acupuncture can help improve many skin conditions but is most popularly used for antiageing for cli-
ents starting in their 20s right through to those in their 60s and 70s. It can reduce bags under the eyes, reduce wrinkle depth, tone sagging jowls and give the skin a radiant glow. “Professional intradermal needles are used to create very small dermal needle punctures to the skin surface,” said Elaine.
BE Pro Therapy uses 100% natural products.
CONTACT DETAILS For details on services and more check out www.beprotherapy.com, “like” BE Pro Therapy on Facebook, www.facebook.com/beprotherapy/ or contact Be Pro Therapy by calling 083-8165566, or emailing info@beprotherapy.com
“As a consequence, the repair process releases numerous growth and healing factors that stimulate new collagen to be deposited under the skin surface. This is not to be confused with micro-dermal needling, a process that uses shorter needles and often leaves the skin red for days. Depending on one’s skin type most clients will leave the clinic with no visible signs of redness. A course of six sessions is advised for optimal results.” Cosmetic Acupuncture is also an exceptional alternative for management of active acne and can reduce acne scarring and even skin tone and balance oil levels. Traditional acne management pills and creams are notoriously harsh on the body and cosmetic acupuncture along with the use of our 100% Irish natural products from Nía provide a very effective alternative to this problem.
Central Location And Mobile Service THE private BE Pro Therapy clinic is ideally located on St Anne’s Road, at the top of High Street with ample free parking and within minutes’ walking distance from the town centre. can set up in minutes with a mobile table or treat you in your own bed where necessary. “Our mobile services are also an option for any tourists visiting the area who would prefer to enjoy quality treatments in the comfort of their own vacation rental property.” Elaine is known for her hands-on touch and combines this with clinical expertise to often provide relief where conventional methods have failed.

Grace Notes Take Your Listener On A Journey
A song is a heightened way of telling a story, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley
I HAVE always been more drawn to the lyrics of a song than its melody. My father and my fiancé both feel the opposite but for me, unless I can feel some sort of connection to the lyrics, I can be left cold by a song. This often leads to a heated debate when watching talent shows on TV in my house. The singers who I would describe as “powerhouse” singers have never really done it for me. I can certainly see that they are very talented and they have a very strong instrument, but, I often find all the belting and vocal acrobatics a little tiresome. I must make it clear that this is simply an opinion. When I am working with a student I always tell them that you must take the listener on a journey. Years ago someone told me, “You don’t give them starter, main course and dessert all at once. You give one course at
a time.” I loved that analogy and still use it today. In my eyes a song is a heightened way of telling a story. The combination of words and music can often get a message to travel right to the heart of the listener. I think I like singers like Glen Hansard and Damien Rice because they are not afraid to sing a story in a very stripped back manner. They have moments where they sing notes that some may say are rather harsh and ugly, but the story at that part of the song requires that. As singers, do we sometimes hide behind our vocal prowess? Do we lose the story in our attempt to impress? As singers WE are the instrument but we are also the human behind the story in that moment. Do we prefer our singers to be more singer or more human? • Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

Kilkenny Shop Killarney Launches Exciting New Wellness Department CELEBRATE Global Wellness Day in style tomorrow, June 10, with the help of the Kilkenny Shop and Christy’s in Killarney where you will discover a gorgeous selection of natural skincare and wellness products designed to combine beauty and wellbeing. Health and wellbeing have become a key focus of our daily lives, and skincare and beauty products are now following suit, as people begin to understand that the skin is a second stomach and conventional beauty products contain harmful chemicals and additives.
With this in mind, Kilkenny Shop and Christy’s have just launched a new Wellness Department with a carefully selected range of natural skincare and beauty products created to feed and nourish the skin and transform your body and wellbeing. The new products, which are now available in stores nationwide and online, are natural and organic and include skincare and beauty products harnessing the therapeutic properties of organic wild seaweed from Voya, nourishing and natural hand created skincare products by Dublin Herbalists, seaweed and essential oil based beauty products from Green Angel and relaxing wellbeing oils from Yogandha, many of which are sourced and handmade in Ireland. Melissa O’Gorman, head of buying at Kilkenny Group, said: “Wellbeing has become a key focus of our daily lives, particularly with the growth of mainstream interest in health foods and natural remedies from plants, herbs and flowers. This naturally translates into the skincare and beauty products that we all choose. Source, quality, ingredients and health benefits are now key decision factors, so we are delighted to launch a gorgeous wellness range that ticks all of these boxes.” Kilkenny is also now stocking a range of Pip Studios Makeup Bags, which are adorned with beautiful botanical and nature inspired patterns, who use the motto “Happy products for happy people”. And because the team at Kilkenny know that it is as important to feed the mind and spirit as well as the body, you can also pick up a range of wellness books and stationery to inspire more mindful living.

Sardinia: Round Two for Duggan
JUNIOR World Rally Championship (JWRC) contender Rob Duggan will start the second round of his 2017 campaign on this weekend’s Rally Italia Sardinia. The 24-year-old driver from Killarney will be looking to build upon his sixth place finish on the first round in Corsica. Sardinia is the first loose surface event in the JWRC calendar, has earned a fearsome reputation since it was first included in the World Championship calendar in 2004. Duggan however, remains unperturbed, despite the fact he will have a new co-driver for this rally. Tom Woodburn will slot into the seat normally filled by Ger Conway as Conway is getting married this weekend. Following a super special stage on
Thursday night, the 2017 Rally Italia Sardinia will start in earnest on Friday with eight stages, six stages on Saturday and finishing with four stages on Sunday. Following Sardinia, JWRC will travel to Poland, Finland and Germany before finishing in Spain. To keep up to date with Rob’s exploits visit www.robduggan.com and follow Rob on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Also participating in the headline act this weekend in Sardinia is fellow Killarney competitor, Paul Nagle, co-driving Kris Meeke in the WRC Citroen C3. Currently lying ninth in the WRC drivers’ championship with three retirements after six rounds will be hoping for better fortune this weekend in their troubled Citroen C3.

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels
JOHN 3:16-18: The reading evokes contrasting images of God, a God who judges and a God who saves. We might reflect on how our image of God has changed with the years. What has helped you to believe in a God whose will is that you should have eternal life? God sent his Son into the world for this purpose, that we might have eternal life. How has the story of Jesus helped you to have that kind of faith? The eternal life promised is life that survives all forms of death, failure, defeat and humiliation. What has helped you to have that sense of being alive, even in painful and disappointing circumstances? John Byrne OSA
Musings
TO TREAT cellulite it is necessary to stimulate the area in order to reduce the volume of fat that has become stored and to kickstart the blood flow and circulation which has become metabolically sluggish. Faradic electrical stimulation uses specific electrical waveforms to mobilise the connective tissue surrounding the pockets of stored fat. This stimulation triggers lipolysis whereby the fat cells naturally start to release the stored fat. Our unique Electro Cellulite Massager (ECM) combines the therapeutic benefits of a massage, with the effectiveness of micro-current therapy. It has been designed to pivot to the body contours to target your specific problem areas, thighs and bum. The stimulatory action of the ECM helps to break down fatty deposits, tone muscles and reduce inches. The unique design of the Electro Cellulite Massager utilises 24 conductive rollers that are electrically charged with micro-currents. These rollers are designed to pivot to the body contours of each individual targeting specific problem areas. The stimulatory action of the Electro Cellulite Massager helps to break down fatty deposits, tone muscles and reduce inches. A course of 12 treatments is recommended, with 2/3 treatments per week. This can vary depending on your individual needs and expectations. A monthly maintenance treatment is also recommended. The benefits of CACI Legs and Buttocks (ECM) are as follows: It contours the buttocks, lifts and tones the muscles, improves appearance of cellulite, breaks down fatty deposits stimulates circulation and Lymphatic drainage and smoothes skin.

ALL sorts of people are fond of repeating the Christian statement that ‘God is love.’ But they seem not to notice that the words ‘God is love’ have no real meaning unless God contains at least two Persons. Love is something that one person has for another person. If God was a single person, then before the world was made, he was not love. Of course, what these people mean when they say that God is love is often something quite different: they really mean ‘Love is God.’ They really mean that our feelings of love, however and wherever they arise, and whatever results they produce, are to be treated with great respect. Perhaps they are: but that is something quite different from what Christians mean by the statement ‘God is love.’ They believe that the living, dynamic activity of love has been going on in God forever and has created everything else.
Support Groups
If you think of the Father as something ‘out there’, in front of you, and of the Son as someone standing at your side, helping you to pray, trying to turn you into another son, then you have to think of the third Person as something inside you, or behind you. Perhaps some people might find it easier to begin with the third Person and work backwards. God is love, and that love works through human beings – especially through the whole community of Christians. But this spirit of love is, from all eternity, a love going on between the Father and the Son. From Mere Christianity by CS Lewis

THIS week Deloitte marked the 10th anniversary of its Best Managed Companies Awards, and invited Kerry companies to enter this year’s programme, in association with new programme sponsor Bank of Ireland. The 2008 launch of the first Best Managed Companies Awards coincided with the emergence of the global financial crisis and marked the beginning of a decade of unprecedented economic turbulence for indigenous Irish companies, operating all around the country, and exporting to the UK, Europe and further afield. The awards programme showcases the success of indigenous companies and acknowledges the contribution that they make to the Irish economy. The network of Best Managed Companies developed over the last decade now stands at 127, and 9 companies are marking a decade within the programme this year. These companies represent excellence in management abilities and practices across all the key functions of their business. Those who are successful and progress through the awards process will receive customised feedback and coaching from Deloitte and Bank of Ireland. Their strategy and capabilities are assessed through the coaching process, with an independent view and validation on their strategic direction provided. Winners also receive national and peer recognition, the opportunity to network at the gala awards ceremony and attend a symposium organised by the IMI. The ’Best Managed’ designation is an important marketing tool – but, perhaps most importantly, the awards provide a reason to celebrate the efforts of the entire company. For further information and details of how to enter the awards, visit www. deloittebestmanaged.ie. The closing date for entries is August 6. Companies that are successful at the end of this process will be announced in March 2018.

Killarney Native Among Winners At Bloom
Garden designers Tricia Harris and Seamus Furlong or A Space to Collaborate. Pic: Johnny Bambury/Fennell Photography
TWO Bloom medals, including a Best in Show Award, were awarded to garden designers and floral artists from Kerry at the prestigious Bloom flower and food festival in the Phoenix Park, Dublin. Killarney native Tricia Harris was awarded a silver medal for her show garden “A Space to Collaborate” created with architect Seamus Furlong. “A Space to Collaborate” is an urban garden which is located adjacent to the home of a maker. It is a creative sanctuary which is focused on its inhabitants and the interaction that is fostered through collaboration. The built structure represents home and the authentic connections and personal bonds that we develop. Seating areas offer a relaxing social space were experiences can be shared and ideas explored. Tricia Harris is a furniture designer creating unique, contemporary, design-led furniture who trained in the renowned National Centre of Excellence for Furniture Design and Wood Technology at GMIT Letterfrack. Additionally, Caherciveen-based company Kells Bay Gardens was awarded Best Nursery.
Debby Looney, right, with Sinead Grennan, CEO of Sonas Apc, at Bloom.
LAST weekend, every self-respecting gardener, landscaper and plant enthusiast in the country landed in the Phoenix Park to Ireland’s largest garden festival, Bloom. Again, I was among the crowds. I thought I was early, but at 10.30am people were already leaving, with carrier bags full of plants, which they, enviably, would have time to plant that day! Bloom is a fantastic opportunity for landscapers and nurseries to showcase their best ideas and products. The Postcard gardens were first on view upon arrival. These are small gardens designed by schools, charities or communities. They often combine youthful ideas with community spirit. Following on from these was the Sculpture garden leading in to the Grand Pavilion. It is here that most of us would fill our carrier bags! Many nurseries from across the country have stands here, but I must say that Kerry’s Kells Bay Gardens had the most beautiful exhibition there. The greenery of the ferns was an absolute breath of fresh air! For those who enjoy flower arranging, the Association of Irish floral Artists had a spectacular stand. On then to the show gardens. I am always in two minds when it comes to these types of exhibitions. Yes, they are beautiful, creative and inspiring. Yes, the plants used are perfect, interesting and colourful. One cannot deny the amount of work and planning that has gone into these gardens. However, do they really help the amateur gardener? The hard landscaping for most of these gardens is more costly, and has more engineering than the average house! What I noticed also, is that the plants used, though fabulous, would not be plants used in country gardens. Grasses and wildflowers were a recurring theme, something which probably appeals to people in cities… I am a great supporter of all plants which will help pollinators, and if the gardens on show at Bloom are an indication of the trend in which gardens are going, the bees have nothing to fear! I was speaking at length with Sinead Grennan, CEO of Sonas Apc, about the Dementia Friendly Garden, which really caught my eye. Using shades of lavender and cream, a combination of oldfashioned flowers, raised herb trough and shaded seating, this garden was restful and user friendly. Sinead gave excellent tips on creating a dementia friendly garden, for example, clear lines, smooth paths without shapes/ colours, and sturdy handrails in contrasting colours. All these ideas applied to any person in the family who may be getting older or have special needs. It is not something I have needed to think about, but my imagination was captured by this particular garden, and the concepts in it are applicable to many situations. One last small criticism I would have, is that Bloom is at the same time each year. The plants used are a recurring combination of grasses, verbascums, digitalis and alliums. Wouldn’t it be a challenge to have Bloom in September, or February? • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

We know your loss is as keenly felt as ours, and we owe you a debt of gratitude for your courage in performing before, during, and after the funeral ceremony. Milner’s Knockout Blow Sends Athletic To The Semis It took an audacious 90th minute winner from super sub Mike Milner to settle the latest instalment of the Killarney derby, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan Greyhound Bar KO Cup (Quarter Final) Killarney Athletic 2-1 Killarney Celtic KILLARNEY ATHLETIC are through to the last four of the cup following a dramatic victory over fierce rivals Celtic in Ferndale on Sunday. The visitors took the lead in the first half and were on top for much of the game, but goals from Daithí Casey and Mike Milner helped the Blues to a famous win that will live long in the memory. This was the third time we’ve played each other this season and once again the derby didn’t disappoint in terms of excitement. We came out on top back in March when two late goals sealed a 3-2 win, and Celtic got the better of us a couple of weeks ago, coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2. It was going to take something exceptional to top that first win up in Celtic Park but, fortunately for us, that’s exactly what happened. Celtic started much the brighter and had us on the ropes a bit early on. When Cathal O’Shea got in behind and coolly rounded Brian O’Connor to give Celtic the lead, you definitely couldn’t say that it was against the run of play. We were leaving ourselves a bit too open and Celtic’s attacking quartet of Stephen Hayes, Tony Brosnan (who replaced the injured Chris O’Leary in the first half), Wayne Sparling and O’Shea were floating around and finding space at will. We upped it a bit in the second half and when Daithí Casey latched on to Mike O’Donoghue’s knockdown and volleyed beyond Roy Kelliher, the sides were level. The last quarter was very frantic as both sides pushed for the killer goal. Things got heated on a couple of occasions but that’s par for the course in a derby game of this magnitude. Celtic were reduced to 10 men when Peter McCarthy received his marching orders following a kick on substitute Lukasz Polak, and that gave us a bit of a lift at a crucial time. Forward Mike Milner was introduced for the last 10 or 15 minutes and no one who was at the game will be forgetting his cameo any time soon. Mike hasn’t featured much for us this season because of other commitments but he has been buzzing at training recently and we definitely felt that he was going to have an impact for us when he came on. He was active from the second he got on the pitch but he was caught offside a couple of times before he finally broke the trap and got in behind.
The Killarney Athletic team who defeated Celtic in the cup on Sunday; back: Daithí Casey, Brian O’Reilly, Brian O’Connor, Eanna Kavanagh, Shane Lynch, Paudie O’Connor and Alan Brady (assistant manager); front: Shane Doolan, Jamie Doolan, Will Courtney, Adam Moynihan and Michael O’Donoghue.
Mike has been buzzing at training recently and we definitely felt that he was going to have an impact for us when he came on
With 90 minutes on the clock, Shane Doolan clipped an accurate through ball over the top for Milner to chase. He was way out on the lefthand side of the box with a defender marshalling him and there appeared to be nothing really on, except for maybe a cross, but Milner caught the ball sweetly on the half volley and fired an incredible shot across the goal and into the far top corner. It was a goal worthy of winning any game. Celtic pressed manfully but we just about managed to keep them at bay. After the match, Celtic were very angry with the referee for not awarding them a spot kick. With
the game deadlocked at 1-1, Cathal O’Shea went down in the box under pressure from Eanna Kavanagh and the away side were adamant that it was a penalty. My initial reaction was that it might have been a foul but my teammates reckon Eanna got the ball, and an ardent Celtic supporter who was at that side of the pitch admitted that he was of the same opinion. Celtic will now turn their full attention to the league and they’re still in pole position to clinch a place in the final. They play Dingle away tonight (Friday). We’ll face Castleisland in the semi-final in Tralee, possibly next week but we’ll have to wait and see. In the other semi-final, Mitchel’s Avenue will play Tralee Celtic. Next up for us is Listowel at home in the league tonight at 7.30pm. A win would go a long way towards securing a spot in the league final but we’ll have to be at our very best to come away with all three points. Athletic: Brian O’Connor; Brian O’Reilly, Paudie O’Connor, Eanna Kavanagh, Adam Moynihan; Michael O’Donoghue, Shane Doolan; Will Courtney, Daithí Casey, Jamie Doolan; Shane Lynch. Subs used: Lukasz Polak, Mike Milner, Eamonn Lavin and Philip O’Connor. Celtic: Roy Kelliher; Chris O’Leary, Jamie Spillane, John McDonagh, Brendan Falvey; Pa McGrath, Matt Keane; Stephen Hayes, Peter McCarthy, Wayne Sparling; Cathal O’Shea. Subs used: Tony Brosnan, Conor McCarthy and Stephen McCarthy.
09.06.17 Words & Pictures: Eamonn Keogh The St Paul’s Basketball Club Annual General Meeting in The Malton Hotel last Tuesday night was very well attended. Club Chairman Padraig Weldon informed club members about the process and work done behind the scenes in recent weeks that secured the return of national league basketball to Killarney. He said that the feedback and reaction from everywhere since the announcement was very positive and looked forward to the new season. Basketball Ireland have yet the announce the structure of the National League division one next season but it is possible that it may be a northern and southern conference style league system as there is a total of 15 teams. St Paul’s is one of four new teams that will compete in the league. The other new teams are Portlaoise Panthers, Ballincollig and Limerick Celtics. They will join existing teams Galway Titans, Neptune, Ulster University Elks, ITC Carlow, Team Kilkenny, LYIT Donegal, Sligo All-Stars, Keanes SV Killorglin, Fr Mathews, Dublin Lions and Radisson Blu UL Eagles. The Killarney side plan to acquire the services of an American player and are also likely to include at least two European players. The rest of the squad will be made up of local Killarney players including former Irish schoolboy internationals Philip O’Connor and Mark Greene while St Paul’s also hope to reach out to other clubs in the East Kerry area where a structured link would allow some of these players to play national league basketball. Padraig Weldon also stressed the importance of continuing the good work at juvenile level in the club and providing coaches for all underage teams. Committee members elected and returned to office on the night will continue to administer the club at juvenile level. Padraig Weldon will remain in office as club Chairman and will be assisted by Jim Delaney and Elizabeth Switzer (ViceChairpersons). Kathy Shine remains as Secretary and Treasurer Jean Courtney will be assisted by Theresa O’Neill. Siobhan Bennett is the new children’s officer. Special presentations were also made at the AGM to club members who enjoyed recent success at All Ireland schools level and community games. These included coach Kate Donnellan and players on the St Brigid’s Presentation team, Mia Heffernan (Presentation Miltown), Anne Moynihan (Intermediate School Killorglin) and Amanda and Darragh O’Brien and Shea Weldon, Fossa Community Games. Congratulations were also extended to underage players Jade Potts and Jamie O’Sullivan who played for the Kerry U-14 teams. Jamie’s U-14 boys team reached the All Ireland final while Jade went one step further with the U-14 girls team when her MVP performance led them to national success.

NBA FINALS The NBA in the USA has reached the exciting finals stage. Unfortunately our national broadcaster and many of the Irish media may be unaware of it but there is no better sporting spectacle happening anywhere in the world for the first two weeks of June. A global television audience of over 30 million people watched LeBron James lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to victory over Golden State Warriors in game seven of last year’s epic finale. This year’s finals bring the same two teams together again. In a series that could last for seven games, the first team to win four games will be crowned champions. The first two games took place in San Francisco last week with the Warriors emerging victorious in both. Two more games are scheduled to take place in Cleveland this week with game four set for this Friday night The home side will have to win at least one of these games to stay in the series. Depending on results the series could finish after four or five games or last for seven games until June 18. Cavaliers star LeBron James is the best all round basketball player in the world at the moment and a global superstar. ESPN announced their ‘World
Fame 100’ of the 100 most famous athletes in the world this week and LeBron is in second place squeezed in between Cristiano Ronaldo (first) and Lionel Messi (third). However Golden State Warriors possess the most entertaining player in the league in Steph Curry, already widely regarded as the greatest shooter of all time in NBA history. The Warriors are also boosted this year with the addition of former MVP winner Kevin Durant and possess a better all-round team but LeBron James is capable of anything to keep the Cavaliers in contention. All games are live on BT Sport TV and repeated the following day at different times.

Kerry’s Opening Bid For Sam Maguire Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald THE Munster Senior and Junior football semi-finals have been confirmed for Sunday next AT Cusack Park in Ennis. In the senior semi-final, Kerry will play Clare at 3.30pm with Padraig Hughes of Armagh in charge. This game will be preceded by the junior semi-final between Kerry and Limerick at 1.30pm with John Hannon of Clare the man in the middle. The Kerry senior squad spent last week away at a collective training camp and there are no reports of any new injuries. Peter Crowley has not played any football for the past few weeks as he is nursing a hamstring injury. The team has not been announced as we go to press, but we can expect it will be along the lines of the team that won the National League title at the expense of Dublin. The Dubs are still the team to beat as they hope to hold on to the Sam Maguire for the third year on the trot. They came through the first hurdle last weekend defeating a very defence orientated Carlow side, by 19 points to 7. Will Eamonn Fitzmaurice hand championship debuts to any of the Under 21 players surprisingly defeated by Galway? Clare beat Limerick in their opening game two weeks ago by just a single point, but it would be a surprise if Kerry lose on Sunday and have to go through the backdoor. Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy THE focus is well and truly on the British and Irish Lions these days. Every four years, the best rugby players from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales are selected to tour with the Lions. The tour rotates between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa and this year New Zealand are the hosts. In the 6 weeks that the tour lasts, the Lions will play 10 matches with 3 of those being tests against the All Blacks.
Listowel event is on Sunday, June 11 at 11am with fun and face painting from 10.15am and meeting at Listowel Community Centre. The Tralee event is on Friday, June 16, at 7pm, with music and face painting from 6.15pm. The meeting point is Tralee Bay Wetlands.

Division 1, Round 4 John Mitchels 0-08 Dr Crokes 1-11 Before the commencement of the game, John Mitchels U10 boys formed a guard of honour for both teams and there was a minute’s silence before throw-in for Francis Galvin, who passed away earlier this week. Dr Crokes opened the scoring with a point from Shane Murphy, followed by a point from a free from Chris Brady. Mitchels got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute with a point from a free from James Duggan, leaving the score at the end of the first quarter Mitchels 0-01, Crokes 0-02. Dr Crokes followed on with a point from play from Tony Brosnan, followed by a speculative high ball into the Mitchels square, which was deflected into the Mitchels goal by Paul Clarke. This was going to be the decisive score of the game. Dr Crokes opened the second half with a point from play from Jason Lyne, followed by a Mitchels point from play from Niall Sheehy. Dr Crokes scored a further two points and Mitchels pulled one back with a James Duggan converted free, leaving the scores going into the last quarter: Dr Crokes 1-08, Mitchels 0-05. In the last quarter, Crokes added on a further three points which were matched with points from Conor Hurley and George Bastible, both from play and a converted free by Alan O’Donoghue.
The other matches will be very tough affairs against Super 14 teams so Warren Gatland will have his work cut out. The Lions have not had a successful tour in New Zealand since 1971 and the 3-0 drubbing 12 years ago is something they won’t want to repeat. Warren Gatland has selected 41 players for this tour, however Billy Vunipola had to withdraw due to injury and will be a huge loss for the series. Last Saturday the Lions took on the New Zealand barbarians only 72 hours after a twoday flight; however jet lag cannot be blamed for the hugely underwhelming match which took place. A pretty poor match took place in all honesty but

Division 3 Round 4 County League Laune Rangers 0-10, Gneeveguilla 0-10 Nothing could separate the sides on Saturday evening as Laune Rangers and Gneeveguilla finished level in their County Senior Football League tie in JP O’Sullivan Park, Killorglin. These clubs have got to know each other very well in recent memory, as they have clashed in Divisions One, Two and Three of the County League in the past few years. Laune Rangers had the benefit of the breeze in the first half, and scored with their first possession of the game as Connor Clarke pointed. Gneeveguilla held Rangers out for much of the opening half, and the sides were level at 0-3 each with 15 minutes played – Padraig Doyle, Jamie Brosnan and Padraig O’Sullivan (free) scoring for the visitors with Colm O’Shea (free) and Shane McSweeney pointing for Rangers. Points from play were hard to come by in the second part of the half with both defences applying pressure. Padraig O’Sullivan and Colm O’Shea (2) traded frees before a late surge by Rangers saw Patrick Carey drive forward twice from wingback to score a brace of points to put Rangers ahead by three at the break. An early Padraig Doyle point for the visitors was cancelled out by a third for Patrick Carey. Gneeveguilla were much stronger in the third quarter though, and were level at 0-8 apiece by the 49th minute with points from Padraig O’Sullivan (free), Ciarán O’Connor and Michael Brosnan. Mike Frank Russell made up for an earlier missed free by slotting another to edge Rangers ahead, and Connor Clarke doubled the advantage for the hosts. Gneeveguilla kept their nerve though, and sustained pressure led to a couple of late frees. the 13-7 win is a win. Captain Sam Warburton said every game is a Test Match for the Lions and that’s how they are treating each game. The big thing for me was how well Owen Farrell played and took the match by the scruff of the neck when Johnny Sexton went off. Farrell is a class act and seemed to cope better with the Barbarians than Sexton, who took a knock in the first half. It will certainly be an interesting series. It’s a little strange watching a rugby match on a Saturday morning but there’s no complaints in my household as my boys were glued to the game also. Here’s hoping for better quality rugby over the next few weeks.

Kilcummin forward Noel Duggan talks to Adam Moynihan about a difficult start to the season, his favourite sport (it’s not football) and Kevin Gorman’s Road cords
Hi Noel. How’re things?
What’s your proudest sporting moment?
Not too bad.
I got a trial for the Kerry minors.
How’s the year going so far with Kilcummin?
And the most embarrassing?
Between injuries and everything it isn’t going great really. We’re out of the County Championship and we’ve to play Kerins O’Rahilly’s in the relegation final. Other than that, we’re up in the top half of Division 2 so that’s probably our main aim, to get promoted back to Division 1.
Kerry minor trials.
When is that Rahilly’s game likely to be played? The end of the year. After Rahilly’s go out of the County Championship, that’s when we’ll be playing. A few questions about your teammates…
Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? Philip Casey has Tinder Pro.
If you had to compare yourself to a professional athlete, who would it be? Djimi Traoré.
If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? ROG, Shane Lowry and Eddie Guerrero.
Latino Heat. What are your five favourite sports in order? Golf, hurling, rugby, women’s beach volleyball and football.
Fancy. Who’s the biggest moaner?
Would golf be number one?
Kevin Gorman.
Who’s the worst-dressed? See previous answer.
It would I suppose, yeah. I’d be interested enough in golf. I watch it most weekends.
What kind of stuff does he rock up in?
What are you playing off?
What would you sing at karaoke?
Remember the old Road cords with the flares? I think he has a couple of pairs of them left.
11.
Champagne Supernova by Oasis.
Who spends the most time in the gym?
Yeah I’m okay. I’m better at watching it than I am at playing.
Patrick Buckley. He’s massive.
This is a loaded question but if you could bring back one ex-player to line out for Kilcummin this season, who would it be? There’s a good few in town! But I’d have to say Tommy Brosnan.
Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? Shane McSweeney.
Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Brendan Kealy. He drinks almond milk.
If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? I live in Spa so I’ll say them.
You’re good enough so…
What’s your most-used emoji?
Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at?
What’s the best show on TV?
Rugby maybe?
Location, Location, Location.
What’s the best sporting moment of all time?
Who’s the most famous person in your phone?
Simon Zebo ringing Rob Penney to ask for the Munster captaincy. [It was a forfeit on the last Lions tour.]
Khan the Taxi Man.
Do you have any nicknames?
Anything from Rob’s Ranch House.
Dugs.
Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? Spotify.
What’s your favourite song at the moment? Mask Off - Future.
What would you have for your last meal? Who would play you in a movie about your life? Zach Galifianakis.
Can you tell me a joke? No, but I gotta make like Tom and Cruise. Slán.
Slán go fóill lad.
Fantasy Football
Conor Healy Claims Advertiser Fantasy Football Crown FANTASY FOOTBALL expert Conor Healy has scooped the top prize in the inaugural Killarney Advertiser fantasy football league. In a dramatic, late twist, Conor shot up the Serie A-dvertiser table in the closing weeks to see off fierce competition from some of the finest fantasy managers in town. He made Alexis Sánchez captain for the final gameweek which earned him 18 points, while big scores from Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Gabriel Jesus all contributed to his impressive tally of 93. Conor finished first with 1,267 points, just five points clear of Leo Nash in second. Niall McCarthy came third with 1,235. Gadge Murphy had been in pole position for the majority of the season but a disappointing run-in left him way down in ninth at the close of play.
The competition, which was free to enter, was very generously sponsored by Brian James and Conor picked up his trophy and winning prize of a voucher for a free suit, shirt and tie during the week. Patrick Moriarty, Sam Fagan and Alan McCarthy, winners of the March, April and May Manager of the Month awards respectively, also collected €50 vouchers for their efforts. Speaking after the prize giving, sports columnist and tournament organiser Adam Moynihan was full of praise for the winners. “Fair play to the lads,” he said. “Fantasy Premier League is a real test of your football knowledge and it takes a lot of time and effort to challenge for big leagues like this. Conor loves his fantasy football and he’s definitely a deserving champion. “We only started in January so it was great to get 150 entrants. With the

fantastic sponsorship we’re getting from Brian James, we’d be hoping for even more participants next season.” As for his own endeavours in the league, Adam was surprisingly up-
beat. “I’m happy with my 93rd place finish,” he insisted. “At the end of the day, some of my players let me down big time but I don’t think I should be held accountable for that.”

RESULTS: Greyhound Bar Cup, Killarney Athletic 2-1 Killarney Celtic Athletic 2-1 Celtic. A cracking cup win for our senior team against big rivals and neighbours Celtic this morning in front of a good crowd in Woodlawn. We never got going in 1st half and were lucky to be just 1 down at the break.. the Athletic boys started the 2nd half with a more intense effort and grabbed an equalizer through Daithi Casey. The introduction of Milner, Lukas and Lavin upped the tempo further for us and after a red card for Celtic it was the turn of Milner magic in the 90th minute to give us a heart stopping victory. U7/U8 TRAINING: U7/U8 Training is now finished for this season; a big thank you to the players, parents, and most especially the dedicated coaches. SOCCER TOTS: Our Soccer Tots Programme for boys and girls aged 4-6 starts in mid-June. This is an 8-week fun and friendly introduction to soccer under fully qualified and garda vetted supervision. RESULTS: Greyhound Cup: Killarney Athletic 2 Killarney Celtic 1 Our Killarney rivals took the honours in the Greyhound Cup after a real thriller in Ferndale this morning. Cathal O’Shea rounded the keeper and slotted home from a tight angle to give us a 1-0 lead at half-time. Celtic were the better side at this stage, with Matt Keane, Peter McCarthy, Wayne Sparling, and Cathal applying constant pressure, but the loss of the influential Chris O’Leary to injury early on was a factor in Athletics’ resurgence - Brian O’Reilly, Mike Stam O’Donoghue, and Daithi Casey were outstanding, and it was Casey who volleyed home a rebound for the equalizer. With some of the play becoming disjointed, Mike Milner curled in a brilliant winner,
giving the excellent Roy Kelliher no chance - in fairness, it was as good a goal as you will ever hope to see. Despite great efforts, Celtic couldn’t get in to draw level before the clock ran out. Disappointing to lose, but the superb quality of the play is something that will hopefully stand to both sides in the games to come as the league season reaches its zenith. FOOTBALL FOR ALL: Well done to our Football For All team and coaches who travelled to the AUL in Dublin for the FAI National Football For All Blitz. We had 30 players, 9 coaches & supporters travelling. It is all about inclusion, taking part & having fun. U10’S: Our U10s finished up a great season with a blitz at Woodlawn this afternoon. Ourselves, Inter Kenmare, and hosts Killarney Athletic each fielded 2 teams on a lovely bright day. Some great games took place with pizzas and soft drinks provided for the boys at full time. Thanks to JP for the hospitality. After playing soccertots, U7, U8, U9 and U10 these boys are now graduates of our academy and hopefully they will have many years playing with Celtic ahead.

A fine performance against Castlegregory ensured their route to the final played on the same night, despite losing crucial players to injury. Regrettably, their efforts weren’t to match a strong Churchhill side in the final of this division 1 clash. Well done to the players and management on a great effort.

Dr Crokes GAA
Dr Crokes1-11 John Mitchels0-8. Even though we had half dozen points to spare at the end this was far from a one-sided game. Our opponents had plenty of possession but failed to convert their chances as well as we did. This should not make us complacent, as we were not as clinical in our finishing as we can be. We set the pace from the start with two early points. Mitchels came more into the game after a sluggish start and ended up the first thirty minutes with three points to our 1-5. Our goal in the 24th minute was the changing score of the game. It resulted in a long ball into our opponent’s square that was punched to the net by Paul Clarke for a very good three pointer. Territorially the second half was very like the first with both teams sharing the possession stakes. We outscored John Mitchels by six points to five. The best point of the game came in this thirty minutes, a free by our goalkeeper from outside our opponent’s fifty-yard line and into a tricky breeze.
Spa Club
SENIOR CO LEAGUE RD 4: Spa 1-18 Beaufort 1-11: Spa secured two more Co. League points last Friday night with a home win against Beaufort. Beaufort were attacking from early on but David Carroll had a great
day between the posts, pulling of four saves in the first half. Mike O’Donoghue kicked Spa’s first point but Beaufort edged into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after 10 minutes. Another point from Mike O’Donoghue and three great points from Evan Cronin levelled the game 0-5 apiece. More scores from Evan, Cormac Cronin, Mike O’Donoghue and Mike McCarthy gave Spa the lead at the break, 0-9 to 0-8. David Spillane extended that lead on the restart but a Beaufort goal, after a scramble in the small square, edged the visitors in front temporarily. Points from Mike McCarthy, Mike O’Donoghue (2) and Evan Cronin followed before David Spillane’s first attack rolled across the Beaufort goalmouth and wide. Mike O’Donoghue pointed again before Spillane was on target with his second shot to move Spa ahead 1-15 to 1-10. Spa finished well with late points from Mike O’Donoghue (2) and Evan Cronin to win 1-18 to 1-11. LOTTO: Numbers drawn in the Torc 7,10,18,25. No jackpot winner. Next week’s draw will be in Mcsweeneys for €6800.

MUNSTER COACHING & GAMES U 12 COUNTY STADIUM BLITZ DAYS: Munster Coaching & Games are giving clubs an exciting opportunity to participate in a series of blitz days at County Stadia. The blitzes are for under 12 club teams and will be 11 a side with each club to bring 1 team. Each club will get the chance to play 3 games on the pitch against teams from other counties as well as a talk with a county player and a stadium tour. This initiative is in its 7th year and has been a very enjoyable day out for the clubs that have taken part in the past. The dates for the blitzes are as follows, July 18th/19th/20th: Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney (Football Blitzes), July 22nd: Gaelic Grounds, Limerick (Hurling Blitzes), July 25th/26th/27th: Semple Stadium, Thurles (Hurling Blitzes). We would encourage all clubs to apply for participation in at least 1 venue however as it is a great opportunity for boys to play in the same stadium as their idols. The games are about participation rather than winning and give coaches the opportunity to give all squad members a day to remember for the rest of their lives. Clubs who have any queries please contact Mid Kerry GDA P J Reidy.
Kilcummin GAA
CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE RD 4: Kilcummin 3-15 Listry 1-11. Kilcummin secured their second victory of the campaign at home to Listry on Saturday evening last. Two early goals from
Daniel Moynihan and Oscar O’Connor set us up nicely early on. However, an incident in the square that lead to our goalie getting black carded and a penalty given saw Listry come within a point of us after 15 minutes. However, to our credit we put it behind us and with Noel Duggan in great scoring form and Damien O’Leary Donal Maher and Chris O’Leary controlling things in defense we lead at half time by 2-6 to 1-2 having played against the breeze. The second half saw Listry rally briefly with two early points but with Matthew Keane and Shane McSweeney controlling midfield we never looked like losing this one. In fairness to Listry they never gave up and with fellows like Danny Wrenn, Jimmy O’Leary and Derry Aherne driving on they managed to score another seven points before the game was over. A great move saw Matthew Keane finish to the net for a third goal late in the game to round off a very competent display. Very heartening was the display of many of our younger players such as Paul O’Riordan, Jamie O’Donoghue and Oscar O’Connor who complimented our more established members. Team and scorers - Kieran Fleming, Donal Maher, Damien O’Leary, Mikey O’Shea, Daniel Moynihan (1-0), Chris O’Leary Jamie O’Donoghue, Shane McSweeney, Matthew Keane (1-0), Philip Casey (0-1) Daniel O’Leary, Paul O’Riordan (0-1) Oscar O’Connor (1-0) Noel Duggan (0-8) Richie O’Connor Subs used William Maher (0-1) Gavin O’Connor, Gavin O’ Leary, Tom O’Connor, Ian Devane (0-1) FIXTURE: Kilcummin Play Listowel Emmets in Listowel this Saturday at 7.30 pm GAA GOLF SOCIETY CAPTAINS PRIZE: 1st Muiris Healy 40 pts, 2nd Mike Leary 39pts, 3rd Joe Scanlon 38 pts, 4th Mike Casey 38 pts, 5th Denis J O’Connor 38 pts, Front 9 Donie Broderick 20pts, Back 9 David O’Riordan 20 pts, Longest Drive Tom Coleman, Nearest Pin Darragh Kelly.
