Killarney rallies to
support children’s hospital A KILLARNEY family joined forces with the community to make a difference to Temple Street Children’s University Hospital in Dublin. Teresa and Stephen O’Mahony, together with their daughter Alexis, 10 months, organised a hugely successful coffee morning in the Killarney Royal Hotel, raising an impressive total of €7635 for the cause. Alexis has a rare condition that means she must spend a considerable amount of time every month at the National Centre for Inherited Metabolic Disorders (also known as the national metabolic unit) at Temple Street Children’s
University Hospital in Dublin. “There we witness the first hand dedication, love and vital care provided to seriously ill children on a 24-hour basis,” said Teresa. Stephen said: “Four months ago Alexis eventually got her primary diagnosis of pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency which had up until then and continues to cause many other serious and dangerous problems for her.” This condition, which is quite rare, means Alexis’s body cannot break down food and it can also lead to lifethreatening complications. “We don’t know what the future holds, it’s about living in the ‘now’,” said Stephen.

Gilroy’s offers cost-effective and renewable technology to generate electricity LEADING company Gilroy’s is always looking for ways that can save its clients money. Its clients include businesses and individuals in the agricultural, commercial, hospitality, industrial and residential sectors. Gilroy’s will supply, install and commission one of its 11KWp photovoltaic (PV) solar system(s) for your business. PV technology is the cost-effective and renewable way to generate electricity wherever you are. The cost of the system will be
€20,000, ex VAT at 13.5%. “The price includes Gilroy’s doing all works including the paperwork for the ESB networks,” said Martin Gilroy. “We have 11KWHp and various size system(s) installed and commissioned throughout Ireland.” So how can you expect to benefit? An 11KWp system installed by Gilroy’s on April 1, 2015, has generated 12,650KWH of electricity over the first year installed saving the client €2,783 on their electric cost at €0.22 per KWH including VAT
at 13.5%. “This 11KWH photovoltaic solar system will save our clients in excess €139,000 on their energy bills over the next 25 years as all our solar panels come with a 25-year guarantee and have no moving parts so there is no maintenance required to keep a system generating electricity year after year,” added Mr Gilroy. “This system is giving return on investment (ROI) of 22.56% including tax incentive. Payback will be 4.18 years working on what has been generated with our 11KWH
system to date – plus taking the 40% Income tax, UCS at 8% and PRSI at 4% this is €1,300 annual tax relief for the first eight years.” In a nutshell, after five years the PV solar system has paid for itself. From this point the photovoltaic solar system will save you in access of €5,600 per year on your electricity bills. “The photovoltaic solar system is generating 12,650KWH of electricity per year reducing your Co2 Carbon footprint by 6,831kg per year,” said Mr Gilroy.
Rotarians celebrate International
Women’s Day in Killarney IT WAS a truly international affair as Killarney Rotary Club marked International Women’s Day yesterday. Hosted by Killarney Rotary Club President Angela O’Connor, it was the club’s second annual celebration of the date. Ladies (and some brave gentlemen) from the United States, Canada, England, Germany and Denmark attended. “Killarney Rotary’s partners for our other annual events attended including representatives of Football For All, The Stephen Lyne Foundation, Killarney Swimming Club, Skal and the Killarney Soroptimist Club,” said Angela. “This will be a fixture on our calendar from now on as it is such a great opportunity to showcase the achievements of local women as, without role models, young women and girls cannot replicate what they do not see."

Welcome to the Emerald City KILLARNEY’S buildings, both modern and historic, have been turning their counterparts in towns and cities across Ireland green with envy in recent years. It’s just magical to see the now-annual greening of Killarney. The build-up to St Patrick’s Day in Killarney has seen a whole host of
iconic buildings in the town bathed in a green glow. Each year landmark buildings such as St Mary’s Cathedral, St Mary’s Church of the Sloes, the Franciscan Friary, the Methodist Church and the Old Monastery take on an emerald hue. “The initiative not only aesthet-
ically brings the St Patrick’s Festival to life at night, it is much more than this,” said St Patrick’s Festival Killarney chairperson Anne Marie Kennelly. “It is so wonderful to bring such key landmarks in the community together and the churches have been very receptive to allow us green their
buildings.” The greening of the buildings is one of a number of initiatives in Killarney to celebrate St Patrick’s Festival. The family event includes a whole host of other fun activities, including storytelling, a treasure hunt, Kids Fun Zone, and most importantly the St Patrick’s Day parade.

Plaza chef James picks up bronze medal at national championships CHEF James O’Sullivan from the Plaza Hotel has scooped a major honour at the Catex Exhibition, Ireland’s largest hospitality and culinary event. James competed in the Chef Ireland competitions which are organised by the Panel of Chefs of Ireland and endorsed by the World Association of Chefs Societies. The Catex Exhibition provides an opportunity for Ireland’s most talented students to go headto-head with senior industry chefs in what is always a tightly fought contest across a broad variety of competitions. Now in its 51st year, Catex remains the biggest competition of its kind in Ireland and is an excellent opportunity for chefs and hospitality students of the future to showcase their talent in front of
some of Ireland’s leading food and hospitality professionals. James decided to take part in the Irish Fish Open and chose to prepare a dish of tea smoked trout with gremolata, crispy quail egg, Brandon Bay crab, red pepper puree, Ring of Kerry apple gel, pickled mooli, cucumber and apple. James says it took a few attempts to get all of the elements nailed down. “It was a slow and meticulous process trying recipes and developing new ones that would fit the 30 minute time allowed to both prep and cook the dish.” Reflecting on his achievement, he hailed the training he has received both during his studies and in the workplace. “It’s a testament to the excellent
training and support provided for me as a young commis chef by both IT Tralee and the Plaza Hotel that I could go and win this award, competing against senior chefs from all over Ireland just a year and a half after I first walked into the kitchen - with no experience of working as a chef or knowledge of how a kitchen was ran,” he said. “But through the continued support of all the chefs in the Plaza, especially my head chef and mentor Peter Guban, I continue to grow from strength to strength and am looking forward to competing in further competitions in the future.”

RIVERSIDE HOTEL prepares for night of French cuisine FANS of French food are in for a treat at The Bacchus Room Restaurant on March 21 as The Riverside Hotel hosts the Good France Dinner. Over 2,000 restaurants in five different continents will be participating in the global event, with each individual venue putting on a special menu on the night. It will be the second time The Riverside takes part in this unique celebration of French culinary delights and plenty of Killarney’s French population (and, of course, locals alike) are expected to attend. After the great success of the last Good France Dinner, The Riverside’s head chef Cyrille Durand was invited up to the French Embassy in Dublin where he met and dined with the French Ambassador. It promises to be another entertaining evening.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally
LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
JOHN 4:5-42: Jesus leads the woman along a wonderful journey towards a deeper, fuller human life. You can enter the story from the perspective of the woman. Recognise her resistance to growth, her complacency, her evasions, and her eventual acceptance, partial though it was, of Jesus. When have you, or others, made a similar journey in your relationship with God? With others? With your own self? The woman is attracted by what Jesus is saying, but from very human motives: the thought of having water in such a way that she did not have to come and draw it from the well. We too are attracted to Jesus by very mixed motives, some of them matters of personal interest – belonging, community, security. What have been the human motives that have attracted you to faith, prayer, religion, church and which have been stepping stones to a deeper personal relationship with Jesus? Perhaps we can also see the same movement in the growth of some of our human relationships. You can also enter the story with Jesus, the ideal leader, parent, teacher, or spiritual guide. Notice how he meets the woman where she is, needing her assistance; how he is patient with her, but also challenges her to grow to what she is capable of. John Byrne OSA, Veritas
BISHOP RAY BROWNE PAYS TRIBUTE TO BISHOP EAMON CASEY RIP
It is with sadness that I learn of the death of Bishop Eamon Casey. He was bishop of the diocese of Kerry from 1969 to 1976. His years in our diocese were a time of growth and expansion in terms of social services for youth and the elderly, for the poor and disadvantaged, also services to marriage and family. The Kerry mission to Kenya commenced. A major renovation of the Cathedral was undertaken. Bishop Casey was a driving force in all of this. It is hard to believe it is now over forty years since he transferred to Galway diocese. On behalf of myself and Bishop Bill Murphy and the whole community of the diocese of Kerry I sympathise with his family, his extended family and all who mourn him. “O God, almighty Father, our faith professes that your Son died and rose again; mercifully grant, that your servant who has fallen asleep in Christ, may rejoice to rise again through Him.” Bishop Ray Browne
THE DEEP END
IN THE words of Leonard Cohen: “Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything … that’s how the light gets in.” No one is perfect. This might seem like the most obvious statement in the world, but it’s important to remember. We live in a time when people’s thoughts and actions are more widely recorded and open to scrutiny than ever before. A small mistake can cost someone their reputation or livelihood. An opinion expressed, particularly online, can invite a world of insults. It appears to be easier than ever to take the moral high ground, and to dismiss a person entirely based on one thing we know about them. This is not the way Jesus treated people, and it is not how he sees us. The Samaritan woman Jesus meets is all too aware of what the Jews think of her. She is nervous when approached by Jesus at the well. But he sees beyond the label to the person, the woman with a life story and a context of her own. He engages her in intellectual conversation, listens to her, and wins her over. Jesus could tell the woman everything about her life, and he knows each one of us just as intimately. He knows our past and our faults, our ‘cracks’. That is why he is able to speak to us, if we resolve to try and listen. It is also an important lesson in how we should treat others.

The Hydra 3HA Facial from Sothys Cosmeceuticals This nourishing treatment will help to repair your skin after the long winter months, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio
INTENSIVE Hydrating Treatment is our solution to help quench thirsty skin and combat dehydration. A combination of hyaluronic acid and patented Boletus extract reactivates your natural hydration levels to reveal a more youthful complexion. Moisturizing serums, ultranourishing massage cream and an enveloping mask restore the skin’s natural softness and suppleness. This extremely hydrating facial incorporates deep cleansing with steamer and comedones (aka blackheads) extraction. It also includes a hydrating exfoliation (yes, it exists!), something that can exfoliate even the most delicate skin. It’s exactly what
our skin needs after a long winter with so much indoor heating, as well as damaging environmental effects like pollution and toxins. It's time to let your skin breath again. Rehydration of the outer layers of skin allows your homecare, e.g. moisturisers, serums and masks, to penetrate deeper down to the lower layers where the collagen and elastin need nutrients and energy for growth and repair. If the lower layers receive enough energy and nutrients, that will allow them to grow, blossom, plump and rise up to the outer layers, which in turn plumps out the surface of the skin and gives a glowing and youthful complexion.
Contact Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 064-6632966 for further details.

Dressing comfortably for your shopping expedition SERIOUS shopping is a serious business and it’s always good to embark on an expedition well prepared so you make the most of the experience. If you are in the market for a new outfit or new wardrobe, bear in mind that you will be taking off and putting on clothes a lot in fitting rooms so dress accordingly. FOOTWEAR Be sure to wear shoes that easily slip on and off. Constant bending over to tie your shoes or buckling them can waste a lot of time and takes the fun out of shopping. It also may reduce your likelihood of trying things on before you buy them (obviously a huge no-no!). Stretchy clothing Try to avoid wearing restrictive clothing. Stretch skirts and shorts as well as leggings are easy to slip on and don’t require zipping or

buttoning. Likewise give complicated tops or jackets a wide berth as these can cramp your style also on such expeditions! VEST TOP A simple tank or vest top can be essential. The perfect layering piece, it lets you see how items work with what is already in your wardrobe. Also when stores set a limit on garments you can bring into the fitting room, wearing your own camisole saves you an item. BRING YOUR OWN BASICS Wear the jacket or cardigan you wear most often. It’s easier to buy pieces for your wardrobe when you have your favourite articles of clothing with you. A cardigan is lightweight and easy to slip on and off, while still managing to keep you covered. Obviously avoid wearing a jacket if it is hot outside.

Help Cystic Fibrosis Ireland hit the ground running I AM writing to seek your support and that of readers of the Killarney Advertiser, for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland's biggest annual fundraiser. Cystic Fibrosis Ireland's One in 1,000 campaign sees one thousand women take to the streets of Dublin as part of the VHI Women's Mini Marathon on Monday June 5. The women of Kerry have been hugely supportive of our One in 1,000 campaign in the past and Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is hoping we can count on them once more in 2017 to raise funds for much-needed cystic fibrosis services. Cystic fibrosis affects the lungs and digestive system leading to shortness of breath and persistent coughing, and potentially life-threatening lung infections. There are approximately 1,200 men, women and children with cystic fibrosis in Ireland. Indeed it's fair to say that Ireland really is the world centre for cystic fibrosis, in that we have the highest prevalence and some of the most severe types of the disease. That's why I am asking the women of Kerry to get up and running so that together we
can help to stop this disease in its tracks. The VHI Women's Mini-Marathon offers a great opportunity to get fit and healthy. But for our One in 1,000 team there's also an important added benefit of raising funds and making a difference for a cause that's near and dear to their hearts. The biggest all-women's event of its kind in the world, the mini-marathon welcomes all ages, from teenagers to grandmothers, and all fitness levels, from walkers and joggers, to elite athletes. So no need to worry about being a gym fanatic! To register Cystic Fibrosis Ireland as your chosen charity, please contact us today on LoCall 1890 311 211 or visit www.onein1000.ie. The closing date is April 28 2017. Will you be “one in 1,000” and help Cystic Fibrosis Ireland hit the ground running? Philip Watt, Chief Executive, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, Via email
Progress on Pretty Polly site? AT THE recent Killarney Municipal Area meeting I asked if Kerry County Council had made progress in the matter of determining a future beneficial use for the site at Upper Park Road, formerly known as Pretty Polly. Kerry County Council replied that it has completed an environment assessment screening report and that the next stage of the Part 8 process is that of public consultation which will commence in 2017. The Part 8 is for the demolition and clearance of the building and site. The building now on site would not be suitable for use without significant investment. The existing building is singularly unattractive and is sitting on a prime site that will have great economic potential when the present structure is removed. I urge the council to progress the predemolition process with all due haste. Councillor Michael Gleeson, Clasheen, Killarney

Take Tiny Steps
to help premature babies
Eileen Creedon, Abby and Seamus O’Leary and their twins, Abimay and Gerard and daughter, Monica.
KERRY parents are being invited to put on their walking shoes for premature babies with the launch of a very special walk to raise funds for the Neonatal Unit at Cork University Maternity Hospital. Abby and Seamus O’Leary from Ballymakeera, Co Cork, who have family in Kilgarvan, last week celebrated the first birthday of their twins, who have had a difficult year after being born at just 28 weeks. The family are hosting a walk at the Top of Coom on March 19 to say thanks for all the support they received since the birth of the twins and to say a special thanks to the Neonatal Unit at Cork University Maternity Hospital. Abimay and Gerard were born on February 25, 2016. Gerard weighed only 1lb 11oz while Abimay was 2lb 6oz when they came into the world over three months early. Due to complications with the pregnancy and
WELL-KNOWN chef Mark Doe paid a visit to the third year students at Killarney Community College last week to give them an exciting two-hour workshop in preparation for their Junior Cert home economics exam. All of the pupils prepared, cooked and served different dishes while Mark helped them throughout each stage of the process. He demonstrated his expert chopping skills and showed them how to make garnishes and decorate sweet dishes. He also illustrated the correct method of flavouring dishes. Home economics teacher Ms Máire Keane was pleased with how the day panned out. “It was a huge learning experience for the students,” she said. “They thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.”
fears that baby Gerard would not survive a decision was taken to induce Abbey at just 28 weeks. “We were told at 25 weeks that Gerard may not make it so for the next three weeks I went for a scan twice a week to see was he and his twin both alive.” “It was such a traumatic and difficult time. We didn’t know what would happen,” recalls Abby. Following their birth the twins were immediately rushed to the neonatal unit at Cork University Hospital. “It was terrifying when they were born. They were so small and we didn’t even know if they would survive. ” The twins, who both suffered from heart conditions and underdeveloped lungs, remained in the unit for almost three months before they came home. During that time Abby and her husband,
Mark Doe of the ‘Just Cooking’ Cookery School with the third year home economics students in Killarney Community College.
Seamus, who also have a 14-year old daughter, Monica, spent every moment with their new additions to their family. Abimay was allowed home after 10 weeks and Gerard after 13 weeks. Last week the twins, who have since both undergo heart surgery, celebrated their first birthday and are looking forward to a bright future. Having seen first-hand the care at the neonatal unit the couple now want to give back to say thanks for all the help they received. They have launched "Tiny Steps for Preemie Babies” which is a 5k and 10k fun run at the Top of Coom pub this Sunday, March 19, at 12pm. There are two routes – a 5k and 10k both starting at the Top of Coom Bar and crossing the border from Kerry into Cork and back again. More details can be found on the Facebook event page Tiny Steps for Preemie Babies.

FRIENDS BREW UP SUPPORT FOR MAUREEN HEADFORD resident Maureen Kelliher was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in February of last year and since then, her everyday life has changed drastically because of her condition. Unable to walk without any support Maureen uses a walking aid constantly to help her go about her everyday life. “What most would take for granted like simply being able to sit in a car or do the shopping, is a struggle Maureen strives to overcome,” said her friend Mary McCarrick. “She has always been an active member of the community and though she remains one, her circumstances have become extremely different since her diagnosis.”
Members of the community turned out in force for the recent coffee morning in the Kerry Way organised by the Friends of Maureen Kelliher.

Her pals joined forces to form the organisation Friends of Maureen Kelliher and they are currently organising a few fundraisers. “The funds raised will make life a little easier for Maureen and her four children for the future,” said another friend, Ann Courtney. There was a huge turnout for two recent events in Glenflesk. The first was a card drive in the community all in February, and in the past fortnight, a coffee morning, in the Kerry Way. “The coffee morning organised by the Friends of Maureen Kelliher was a tremendous success. We thank all those who donated prizes and contributed to the baking and to everyone who helped out on the coffee morning,” said Mary. A special word of

STILL FUN TO BE HAD
ISN’T IT FUN TO IMAGINE JUST WHAT COULD BE OUT THERE?
Scientists have made some tremendous advances in recent years yet there are still a lot of unanswered questions and a lot more discoveries to be made, says Trevor O’Donoghue
BIOLOGISTS are discovering that life is not as delicate as we once thought. No matter where on Earth we look, we seem to encounter life. Hardy bacteria that can thrive in the harshest of conditions. From the extreme heat of thermal springs and deep sea hydrothermal vents to the harsh conditions found in nuclear reactors, bacteria and other microbes find a way to prosper. We have exposed bacteria to the harshness of space on the outside of the international space station, only to discover later that the bacteria hadn’t been killed off, but had survived the exposure and were able to grow again upon return to normal conditions. Meanwhile astronomers are making more and more discoveries about the world around us. Water seems to be everywhere. We have traced its signature in molecular clouds between the stars and in distant solar systems as they are being born. We suspect it is to be found in vast quantities, below the surface, on some of the moons of Saturn and Jupiter. The number planets that we know of in the universe is growing at a phenomenal rate. And we now suspect billions of Earth like planets in our own galaxy and immeasurable Earth like planets in the universe.

TALKING POINTS Kerry goes underground in Italy COMMUTERS on Milan’s metro system will be treated to a stunning image of the Great Blasket Island as part of Tourism Ireland’s latest promotion.
We haven’t heard signals from other worlds despite listening for decades. There are still a lot of unanswered questions and a lot more discoveries to be made. In the meantime, however, it is fun to imagine just what could be out there. •Feeling curious about the world around you? Email any science-related questions you might have to Trevor at ftrevorodonoghue@gmail.com or see http://www.trevorodonoghue.com
The billboard ads will reach an estimated 680,000 commuters, which is 39% of the population of Milan. It’s a joint campaign with Aer Lingus to encourage commuters to book their 2017 vacation to Ireland. The poster shows a stunning image of the Great Blasket and features an attractive airfare to Dublin, hopefully reminding Italians of why they should put the Emerald Isle at the top of their holiday wish list. The campaign is also running online, including on Facebook. Niamh Kinsella, Tourism Ireland’s manager in Italy, said: “2016 was the best year ever for tourism from Italy to Ireland. We welcomed almost 345,000 Italian visitors, up 7% compared to 2015. Tourism Ireland is determined to ensure that success continues and we have an extensive programme of promotions under way in Italy this year. Co-operative campaigns with key partners, like this one with Aer Lingus, are an important element of that programme to boost travel to Ireland in 2017.”
Of course with all this going on, it’s seems logical and tempting to infer that the universe must be teeming with life. Look at the number of planets that exist. Can we really be the only example of life in such a vast universe? As tempting as it is to believe that it is only a matter of time until our cosmic cousins pay us a visit, we should remember that we still know of only one example of life in the universe, and that is here on planet Earth. Speculation on the presence of life elsewhere, is just that, speculation. We are still unsure as to how easy or hard it is for life to get going. Is it common? Is life on earth a once off and a big fluke? We don’t know. We don’t know how life began, where life began and haven’t firmly defined when life began. We haven’t managed to create life in the lab.
The father of evolution Charles Darwin. Did life start in a “warm little pond” as Darwin suggested?

Garden Magic LAWN CARE March is the time to really start caring for your lawn, says Debby Looney
LIVING in Kerry is a real treat at this time of year when Magnolias shine. There are so many beautiful specimens in gardens, and it’s now that they’re especially spectacular. In February they are instantly recognisable by their large, soft flower buds reaching up to the sky, but in March we are treated to an unsurpassed show. Magnolia soulangeana will grow to be quite a tree, but Magnolia stellata is suitable for smaller gardens. For a shady spot in your garden (possibly under a magnolia!), I recommend Bergenias. These are evergreen, hardy, low-growing perennials, which are now flowering in many shades of pink. Pink Dragonfly, Bressingham white and Silberlicht are just a few of the many varieties available. Lawn care really begins in March. If your lawn is looking thin, or has a lot of moss, you may need to remove old thatch and moss in order to re-seed. There are a lot of types of grass seed: that which is suitable for a shady garden, or “tough grass”, and even “smart seed”, which incorporates a water retaining gel. However, aeration and nutrients are the key to a healthy lawn. If you are reseeding, and especially when sowing a new lawn, consider mixing in an amount of white clover. Clover fixes nitrogen in the soil, eliminating the need for chemical fertilisers, as well as providing bees with a great
source of nectar. White clover stays low, and will not ruin the look of your lawn. It is, in my opinion, definitely the way to go. I promised last week that I would go through a few specific fertilisers which are for sale. Sequestered iron or sulphate of iron is one which many people ask about. It helps ericaceous plants which are struggling to grow stronger and produce flowers. Apply in early Spring. Sulphate of ammonia is a fast-acting nitrogen supplement, greening up plants. Sulphate of potash is high in potassium which promotes flowers and fruit, as well as helping the plant to resist pests and diseases. Superphosphate helps to ripen fruit, and can be applied throughout the summer. Epsom salts are high in magnesium, which is needed for healthy foliage and is also very good for tomatoes. Fish blood and bone is a general fertiliser, but is “natural” as opposed to chemical. Bonemeal is also a natural product, and is excellent for root growth. Garden Lime is another important additive, especially if you have very acidic soil. Slightly alkaline conditions are especially good for cabbage varieties, as it prevents clubroot. As always, read the labels, and when you can use organic products, please do!

Detailed results will be shared, along with expert recommendations on grass quality and reseeding which will allow producers to maximise efficiency and reduce production costs. The My Grass Roadshow is running throughout the country from the 13th – 24th March. The events are

LeBlanc drives a German taxi, Harris crashes an old Volvo and Evans drinks soup
LAST Sunday week saw the return of the “new format” Top Gear. The “new format” is pretty much a return to the “old format” but technically it is a “new format”, as it is different to last year’s “new format”. Get it. There are a lot of very clever people in the BBC that knew how the Grand Tour vs Top Gear was going to play out. You can’t help but think that last year’s high profile failure was all orchestrated. Think about it, no matter what they did, they were going up against that phenomenal success that was Clarkson. Failure was inevitable. Fast-forward 12 months, Clarkson and company showed their hand. Now the BBC have the situation quantified. The “new format” Top Gear quietly sneaks back on our screens, no fanfare, no publicity stunts – just appears. Evans is gone and the old format is back.
However, what is interesting is how the media reported on the new show. They compared it to the 2016 Chris Evans offering, not Clarkson and company. Timing is everything. To coincide with the airing of the “new format” Top Gear, long lens pictures appear in the media showing Chris Evans sitting on a park bench looking forlorn drinking soup. The question that springs to mind, “How do they know it’s SOUP?” Because it says it on the press release. I can picture the storyboards in the BBC marketing department. Brilliant!! Marketers are very clever on how they get the media to deliver their message. But the idea is so simple. Stick with me on this one. For a comparison you first need two or more. Compare two, the second is the loser, compare three, the second is no longer the loser. But by the virtual fact that it is not a loser, second is now better. So the clever
Top Gear have firmly taken possession of their new/old format again, and inset, Chris Evans.
marketers in the BBC have created a second place position for the 2017 Top Gear at the expense of Chris Evans – that’s showbiz, folks… C’mon, this staging exercise pays well – surely you don’t think that he just hangs around in public parks for all to see. He is worth €65m, lives in a 17th century mansion with parkland gardens and a fleet of classic Ferraris at his disposal. Ooh! If you are interested, the “new format” was familiar Top Gear, which is good. The three personalities need polishing but that will come with time. Top Gear have firmly taken possession of their new/old format again. The show can only succeed from here. BBC marketers - Job done... 17.03.17 Killarney Advertiser

MEEKE AND NAGLE SURVIVE LATE SCARE TO TRIUMPH IN MEXICO NORTHERN Irish driver Kris Meeke and his navigator Paul Nagle from Killarney overcame a major hiccup to seal victory at Rally Mexico last Saturday. The Citroën drivers were in front going into the final day and extended their lead over Stéphane Lefebvre by 6.3 seconds in the penultimate speed test. With victory in sight as they headed into the final few turns, disaster struck as the C3 WRC ran wide on a long righthand corner. Amazingly, the car flew through a hedge at the side of the road and into a spectator car park. Meeke managed to keep his cool and get back on track before crossing the finish line with 13.8 seconds to spare. It’s the duo’s fourth win in the World Rally Championship following their
victories in Argentina in 2015 and Portugal and Finland in 2016. Director of Citroën Racing Yves Matton was mightily relieved with the outcome. “What happened is almost beyond belief, even if this kind of thing has occurred before,” he said. “At the time, there was some confusion as to what had happened; the onboard footage made it look like there had been a major off whereas the tracking system indicated that the car was still moving. When the car crossed the finishing line we were absolutely thrilled and all the tension and drama just slipped away.” Tyrone man Meeke admitted he was fortunate to recover from the mishap. “I think I might end up telling this story hundreds of times,” he reflected.
“I'm annoyed with myself for making that mistake. The car went wide after a big compression and we were very lucky. I quickly looked to get back on the road because I knew we could still win. That's the main thing: we showed the potential of the Citroën C3 WRC in securing the car's first win. I'm proud and delighted for the entire team. This result is for them.” Ford’s Sébastian Ogier finished second while Thierry Neuville of Hyundai was third. The victory propels Meeke up to sixth place in the Driver’s World Championship leaderboard on 27 points. Citroën are currently fourth in the Manufacturer’s World Championship with 55 points.

In loving memory of Patrick (Patsy) Cunningham Late of Friary Downs, Killarney, Who died on the 15th of March 2016. Softly in the evening, You heard a gentle call, You took the hand God offered you, And quietly left us all. The day you left us Our hearts just broke in two, The smallest part is still with us, And the biggest part with you. For the rest of our lives, We will miss you. Our secret tears still flow, Oh, how we really loved you, No one will ever know. We miss your smile, your joking ways, We miss the things, you used to say, And when old times we do recall, It’s then we miss you most of all. You were always there When we needed you, No task too great or small, With loving heart and willing hands, For us you did it all.

Cocoa Brown CEO backs Pres students’ wonder product A GROUP of transition year students from St Brigid’s Secondary School have caught the eye of some major industry experts with a revolutionary new beauty product. Abbie Cronin, Sarah Randles, Sarah Crowley and Fiona Casey came up with the product, named ‘What’s the Crack?’, for the Student Enterprise Awards and it was so popular amongst their classmates they began selling the product within the school. The purpose of ‘What's the Crack?’ is to repair broken makeup products and to disinfect make-up tools. CEO of Cocoa Brown Marissa Carter has lended her support by posting videos on Instagram and Snapchat demonstrating how to use the product to her 100,000 followers. The girls posted Marissa's video on their own Facebook page and it already has 6,000 views and has reached 20,000. Ellen Kavanagh Jones, founder of Waxperts, is
also a fan. The transition year students have been inundated with enquires from pharmacies and beauty salons nationwide and a marketing company from Belfast have expressed an interest in investing in the product. The girls are presently setting up their own website to take orders for the product. They can be contacted on Facebook (‘What's the Crack?’) or on Instagram @whats.the.crack. The product is retailing at €5.

HAYES THE HERO AS CELTIC STEAL FAMOUS WIN The Hoops are just one game away from a final at Aviva, writes Adam Moynihan
the
FAI JUNIOR CUP QUARTER FINAL KILLARNEY CELTIC 2-1 JANESBORO (AET) There was high drama at Celtic Park on Saturday night as a late extra-time winner from substitute Stephen Hayes sealed Killarney Celtic’s passage to the last four of the FAI Junior Cup. Opponents Janesboro were one of the pre-tournament favourites but Celtic more than held their own over the course of a gruelling encounter, and when Hayes pounced in the dying embers of extra time you certainly couldn’t say the Killarney side were undeserving of their victory. To be honest, the great game of football we were hoping for never really materialised. It was a very competitive, very tense match with flashes of brilliance and some moments of high drama but it definitely wasn’t one for the purist. As underdogs you would have expected Celtic to dig in and make it difficult for the visitors and that’s exactly what they did. The centre back pairing of Jamie Spillane and John McDonagh in particular were outstanding on the night and from one to eleven the home side’s application was spot on. They fell behind midway through the first half when striker John Tierney controlled and fired a powerful half volley into the top corner from 25 yards out. Janesboro improved thereafter but it remained 1-0 at the break. To the delight of the boisterous home crowd, Celtic equalised on the hour mark when Jamie Spillane attacked Matt Keane’s corner and powered his header beyond the keeper. The game opened up briefly after that but both sides squandered chances before the nerves really seemed to kick in.

With five minutes to go, veteran Peter McCarthy received his marching orders for shoving an opponent. It was unnecessary but, in fairness to the Celtic man, it was never a red card. With ten men you felt as though Celtic would have settled for extra time and penalties at that stage but they almost won it in stoppage time, substitute Conor Randall volleying wide with the goal at his mercy. Experienced winger Stephen Hayes, who was surprisingly dropped having started all of Celtic’s previous games this season, was finally called upon at the beginning of overtime and he was determined to make his mark. “I was disappointed [not to start] but I didn’t let it get to me,” Hayes said. “I felt that if I did get a chance to come on, I could hopefully do something that would help the team.” He got his big opportunity midway through the second period when a defensive mixup had Janesboro scrambling. Cathal O’Shea retrieved possession and when his
through ball deflected kindly into the path of Hayes right in front of goal, he couldn’t miss. Joyous celebrations followed, and Celtic held on for another historic win. Next up is a semi-final clash against Dublin giants Sheriff YC on April 8/9, and it will undoubtedly be their biggest test yet. The team from the north side are stacked with talent and are gunning for back-to- back national titles for the second time in six seasons. Tournament rules stipulate that in the semis that the team drawn at home, in this case Celtic, can play the fixture on any pitch in their home county apart from their own. Mounthawk Park (Tralee), Listowel and even Killarney Athletic’s pitch have been mentioned as possible venues but it was still undecided at the time of going to print. Although Sheriff are without question the biggest team left in the tournament, Hayes feels Celtic should be happy with the draw. “Isn’t now the time to get them? They have to come down here to Kerry. If we avoided them and we were fortunate enough to get to the final, we’d have to play them
up in their own patch,” he said. “But they have to come down to us, and they’ll be in for a battle.” Celtic: Roy Kelliher; Chris O’Leary, Jamie Spillane, John McDonagh (c), Brendan Falvey; Pa McGrath, Podge O’Connor; Wayne Sparling, Matt Keane, Peter McCarthy; Cathal O’Shea. Subs: Conor Randall, Stephen Hayes and Anthony O’Leary.

sport focus
Eamonn Fitzgerald previews the line-up of sport for the week ahead Dr Crokes will be bidding for their 2nd All Ireland club SFC title in Croke Park tomorrow, where they meet Shaughtneil in this eagerly awaited football clash at Croke Park. Throw –in is timed for 5.00 pm.Shaughneil have been the dream GAA club this year winning Ulster titles in senior football, senior hurling and in camogie. They won the All Ireland camogie title two weeks ago so this has given them a great fillip for the football decider. Cuala defeated them in the hurling at the All Ireland semi-final stage. BLANKET DEFENCE Shaughtneil were bitterly disappointed when they lost the All Ireland club final two years ago to Corofin and will have benefitted from that Croke Park experience. They will be operating a blanket defence and will have up to 10 players behind the ball to counteract the brilliant Crokes offence. It is not pretty but it is effective with their two central defenders Chrissy McKaigue and Brendan Rogers ready to break from defence and sally up field in search of scores. The onus will be on Gavin O Shea and Kieran O Leary to act as defenders when this duo starts their soloing up field. Colm Cooper will be doubly marked at all times so this should release another forward to set up a Croke score. Crokes have a very reliable goalkeeper in Shane Murphy, solid defenders in corner backs John Payne and Fionn Fitzgerald. Ambrose O Donavan had a great semi-final and a repeat performance alongside team captain Johnny Buckley will give sufficient possession to the dynamic forward division. Unfortunately, Eoin Brosnan has not regained full fitness due to that aggravating calf injury and he will be a huge loss. Luke Quinn is likely to get the call up from the bench. One hopes that Brosnan can enter the fray in the second half and earn a well-deserved au revoir in this his last season. Surely the team will make an extra special effort to win the title for the sake of Eoin and Gooch, such wonderful Croke players for so many years. The Crokes’bench is very strong and one can expect up to 5 subs being used adding badly needed fresh legs at strategic times in
the game. Maurice Deegan is the referee Form can be misleading going in to a game where so many variables come in to play. How many of the players on both sides will play up to form on All Ireland final day? What about the referee’s performance? I expect some cards will be issued by him, black or yellow when the ref is undecided in weighing up the situation, or the dreaded red. Deegan’s style of refereeing will not tolerate any wild tackling or persistent fouling, so both teams need to be cognisant of the importance of the referee’s performance. You need skill to win, but this needs to be complemented by Lady Luck on the big stage. In the Corofin game Crokes were gifted a goal when Gavin O Shea’s shot for a point fell short and dipped in to the net. Goals win matches and Crokes should be good for 2 if the blanket defence can be prised open. PAT O SHEA…BAINISTEOIR Pat O Shea scored the allimportant goal in 1992 when Crokes defeated Thomas Davis of Dublin by a single point. In 2007 he managed Kerry to lift the Sam Maguire. His infectious enthusiasm and management know-how would crown a wonderful contribution to his much beloved club, whose fortunes mean so much to him. Win, lose or draw he will be back to the Dr Crokes juvenile academy on Saturday morning coaching the basic skills of Gaelic football to 150 juveniles, some who are as young as Under 6. Mol an Óige agus tiocfaidh sí .Pat eats sleeps and delivers in so many ways for the Crokes that he can have the team able to deliver on match day.His teams are always match ready. Crokes have sprinted out of the blocks in all their games and that is Pat’s style to ensure that the opposition is forced in to playing catch up. In recent months The Nire, Corofin and Kenmare District experienced this explosive sprint from the first whistle. It’s a trait of the Pat O Shea's coaching and management style. Tosach maith leath na h-oibre agus comh maith le sin muna bhfuil ach gabhair agat bí i lár an aonaigh. One of the biggest factor in Crokes reaching this final is the input of bainisteoir Pat O Shea.
READERS’ PREDICTIONS During the week I spoke to a number of local GAA enthusiasts and asked them for a match prediction. First up was Councillor Michael Gleeson, who has the unique distinction of captaining East Kerry; they were crowned All Ireland club champions in 1971, the inaugural year of the competition. Donie Sheahan trained the 1971 team. MICK GLEESON “Having emerged from Munster on many occasions the Crokes must believe that their time has come. Undoubtedly the Ulster champions will, as always, be worthy opponents but the Crokes have vast experience and will be most determined to banish memories of narrow defeats. It would be most appropriate if the mascot in 1992, Colm Cooper, could match the achievement by his distinguished brothers that year”. Tracey O Shea ….Mother of substitute Brian and sister of bainisteoir Pat. “It will be such a great occasion for the Croke club, supporters & family members home and overseas to be back in Croke Park on St Patricks Day. To be honest every position on the Croke team will be a key position come the throw -in. We all know the physicality that Slaughtneil bring to the game but I think over the past few seasons Croke player have stood up and matched that part of the game. Hopefully football will win out on the day and once our lads leave it all on the field of play as they all have done to date, one point to the good will do us”. Sean Clarke. A mighty defender in the 1992 victory. His son Paul is on the 2017 Crokes panel. “Yes, I am confident we can win by 5 or 6 points, probably 2-11 to 1-8. They have been very focussed all the way through and I have been very impressed watching them in training under the watchful eye of Pat O Shea. We have some big boys in this team and they must show the way on Paddy’s Day. A lot will depend on the ref. I hope to God he will not allow pulling and dragging. “ No fear of that Sean. Maurice Deegan is the appointed ref and he sent 3 players off on black cards in the 2016 All Ireland replay between Dublin and Mayo. Noel O Leary,…. the towering midfielder on the 1992 team. “I am forecasting a 3 or 4 point win for Crokes, but they must turn up with the same dash and intensity that they have shown on the road to Croke Park. They are evenly balanced and have a great bench to call on, but there can be no complacency, as these Northern teams play it very tough, as we saw so often with Crossmaglen. Mikey Doody…the former great corner back of the match-winning shuffle. “I think it is going to be a very close game and a low scoring one. I expect our lads to come out on top because we have a good balanced team overall and we are the more skilful side. I go for 1-11 to 1-8 in Crokes favour. I wish all the lads the best of luck in the All Ireland final. The Wedge….Better known for his prowess with the white orb, but also for being a loyal black and amber supporter. “I have followed them to every match and I don’t care who they are playing, on their day they will beat anyone. They have great skill and the bottle to match that which you need to win the biggest prize in club football. I expect us to win by 5 points. It is extra special for Gooch. He really deserves this All Ireland medal with his club to add to those he won with Kerry and all those All Stars he won. He must have won 8 of them. He’s a class act, a true gentleman and a bloody fine golfer for the little he has played of it due to his football commitments. Bridie Cronin……The retired teacher from St. Oliver’s. She never misses a Croke match and is bursar for Fr Paddy at the Wednesday night-out for Croke cards. IN BRIEF • Congrats to Killarney Celtic who defeated highly rated Janesboro FC 2-1 in the FAI Junior Cup quarter-final in front of a huge crowd of spectators on Saturday last at the magnificent Celtic Park. See match report elsewhere in this edition. • Best of luck to St Brendan’s in their All Ireland semi-final on Saturday • My prediction is All Ireland successes for Dr Crokes and Cuala. That should make Des Cahill happy after his elimination from Dancing with the Stars on Sunday night last. He played with Dr Crokes when he worked as a staff reporter with The Kerryman in Killarney and he was also chairman of his home club Cuala, when he went to RTE Sport.

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald
Smalltalk Ahead of Friday’s All-Ireland club final legendary Advertiser columnist Eamonn Fitzgerald talks to Adam Moynihan about his beloved Crokes, his favourite players and their chances against Slaughtneil.
Hi Eamonn. Thanks for talking to me. It must be an exciting time to be a Crokes fan? It certainly is great to be in Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day with an All-Ireland at stake. The build-up has been marvellous. You have happy memories of the 1971 All-Ireland club final… Yes indeed, it was the inaugural year of the competition and I was fortunate to be picked in goal for East Kerry. We beat Bryansford, the Down champions, with plenty to spare. Ten of our starting fifteen had worn the Kerry jersey. It was a very strong team trained by Donie Sheahan. What’s your highlight of the Crokes’ campaign so far? The win over Corofin. Irrespective of the code, rarely has a manager got all fifteen playing so well and for each other. Pat O’Shea got 110% from everyone in that great win. Are you travelling on Friday? Cinnte. What do you make of Slaughtneil? Not since the time of Cúchulainn or Matt the Thresher did I see such a small parish do so well. Their hearts are in the right place in Slaughtneil. And the big question: Will Crokes do it? Yes. The potential is there and total dedication. Barring variables that can upset the best laid plans such as poor refereeing decisions and sending offs etc. Who’s your favourite current Crokes player and why? Over the years it has always been Gooch. No one comes near. He plays the game as near to perfection as is humanly possible. He is a joy to watch, a very special talent. Who is Crokes’ most underrated player and why? Payno, the small man with the big heart. Consistency personified. He has never left the Crokes down. Who’ll be the next Crokes player to play for Kerry? Take two. Shane Murphy and Gavin White Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? Mick O’Connell. Skill personified. If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? The Legion, of course. Always stay local. Their women are fantastic.

If you could meet any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? Seve Ballesteros, Mícheál ó Muircheartaigh and Jackie Kyle. Is there sport you never tried that you think you would have been good at? Rounders. What’s your least favourite sport? Cricket. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? Hopefully, when St Peter meets me at the Pearly Gates. His first and only question is, “Are you Crokes, or Legion?” Everything stems from that. Do you have any nicknames? Ask my former students. We spent 40 years together. What’s your favourite TV show? Prime Time. What’s your favourite film? The Magnificent Seven. Who’s your favourite singer/band? Luke Kelly RIP. No one can compare with him on Raglan Road and Scorn Not His Simplicity. What’s your go-to number when a singsong kicks off? An Poc ar Buile. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? My soul mate, Maura. What would you have for your last meal? Seafood pancake from the local International Hotel, by far the best I have eaten anywhere, thanks to chef Kristophe. Who would play you in a movie about your life? N’fheadar. Can you tell me a joke? This Smalltalk is far too serious to be even thinking of a joke. Thanks Eamonn!

Rugby news & views Ah well, that’s another 6 Nations over bar the shouting after yet another disappointing trip to Cardiff for the Men in Green. Joe Schmidt’s men went into Round 4 of the championship as favourites and would had one eye on the England match on St. Patrick’s weekend. People were writing off Wales as much chatter on social media turned to the big game with the old enemy before we even set foot in Wales. However Rob Howley’s men had other ideas. Usually Warren Gatland
would try some few mind games ahead of such a big match. However his deputy was up to the same tricks on Friday as they closed the room and watered the pitch to such a degree that the travelling Irish teams game plan went out the window. Ireland were expecting a fast and firm surface and would have planned accordingly, so it was 1 up to the Welsh before a ball was kicked off in anger. George North silenced his critics with a storming and hugely

Local clubs weekly round-up | Deadline Monday 5.30pm
Final words of encouragement were shared. The guys were ready and were determined to work for each other until the final whistle. Castleisland we knew would never give up easily. A hard battle for possession ensued from the start. The opening try was scored by centre Liam Randles with some great support work from the forwards at the 5 minute mark. A line break by Brendan O Donoghue with excellent line running on the outside by Rian Colleran nearly saw the second try but Rian was stopped yards from the line. Castleisland countered and a classic tackle by Mikey Moriarty on the Castleisland no 8 was a prime example of how to legally tackle and stop a bigger player. On 20 minutes a brilliant break by Tomas Clifford made the score 10 to 0. This proved to be the last score of the game. At half time Killarney knew that Castleisland would up the pressure and this was definitely the case. On numerous times Castleisland were held on the line by courageous defending from the Killarney boys. The crowd were very vocal in their support for their teams and the result was Killarney were West Munster U14 League Champions for 2017. The squad that lined out on the day were Adam Cronin, Brendan O Donoghue, Odeniz Koyun, Darren Cronin, John McCarthy, Ruairi Coughlan, Padraig Talbot, Bailey O Sullivan, Peter Walsh, Donnacha Grealy, Liam Randles, Thomas Clifford, Mikey Moriarty and Rian Colleran. James Kennelly, Samuel Behal, Sean Hickey, Shane McAllister, Josh Campbell, Harry Kelly and Cormac Rowe and while they did not step on to the pitch of play on the day remain a vital part of the team especially in raising the standard and fight for places in various positions. MINIS Last Saturday, our Minis hosted Listowel RFC at Knockreer on what was unarguably the finest day of the year.Knockreer was abuzz with kids, parents and coaches as we had teams from U7 to U12 play matches under glorious sunshine. We also made history last Saturday as we fielded our first girls team who played a girls team from Listowel - a first for Mini rugby in Kerry! Some amazing rugby was on display by all the kids and minis coordinator Liam Murphy would especially like to thank the parents who brought food on the day and helped out in distributing the food to the players and parents. There was a proverbial mountain of food and it was really enjoyed by one and all after a wonderful morning of rugby. Well done to all the coaches who work hard week in and week out and the hard work is really showing on the pitch as the kids play some wonderful rugby and even more importantly, really enjoyed themselves and had fun.

In the U16 40kg event young Adam Counihan performed well to take fourth position while in the U16 25kg event Darragh Forde was very unlucky to be just pipped but can be very proud of his 2nd place and silver medal performance. Kilcummin were well represented in the Swimming finals at Tralee Sports Complex last weekend. Well done to Zach Cronin and Diarmuid Moynihan who took part in the U10 Freestyle and to Grace O’Sullivan who participated in the U10 Backstroke. Young Daniel O’Sullivan performed very well in the U8 Freestyle – this was excellent experience for our young swimmers in what was a very competitive event. Well done on representing Kilcummin. Finally, Castleisland was the venue on Friday evening last for the Quiz final. Well done to Ailbhe Brosnan, Saoirse Sweeney, Ilona Sheehan, Olwyn Evans, Ewan Evans & Liam Kerrisk – whilst outside the medals this young team will no doubt benefit from the experience and will no doubt have more outings in this event. Next weekend it is the Gymnastics County Finals and we wish our competitors the very best of luck and hope they enjoy the occasion.
Mastergeeha FC
SENIORS PREM B Classic 0 Mastergeeha 2. Mastergeeha continued their good run in the league with a good away win on Sunday morning. With ten minutes remaining Mastergeeha scored again when Tommy O’Sullivan’s cross was finished well by Noel Moynihan. All played well. Killarney Celtic FC
KILLARNEY CELTIC REACH SEMI-FINAL! Killarney Celtic has a very proud history that now stretches over two score years, but there have been very, very few occasions to match a splendidly floodlit Celtic Park last Saturday night when we faced red-hot favorites Janesboro of Limerick in the FAI Junior Cup Semi-Final. A huge crowd of over 2000 people and a veritable army of volunteers ensured an electrifying atmosphere, with the Order of Malta again present to keep everybody safe. We soon learned why they were favourites. Janesboro were quite clearly a top quality outfit and had us under the cosh in the first half – in fact it took superb handling by Roy Kelliher and a brilliant defensive quarter of Chris, Brendan, Jamie and captain John, well helped by Padraig O’Connor in particular, to keep John Tierney, Shane Clarke, and lightning-quick Adrian Power from piercing our rearguard. On the half hour mark Tierney finally got through and Celtic were 1-0 down. Celtic had created some chances, with Peter McCarthy, Cathal O’Shea, and Wayne Sparling working relentlessly, but in fairness Janesboro looked certain to add to their tally at some point. Then Celtic really started to play..... We were much the better side in the second half and really took the game to them. This was brilliant soccer by both teams, instant control, very high tempo, every slight mistake pounced on – and we were well able for it. Home advantage definitely helped, especially with a huge army of Celtic supporters contributing to a fantastic atmosphere – all of Kerry, including but not limited to our fellow soccer clubs, really got behind us for this one and it really made a huge difference. 57 minutes, and a ball whipped across the square by Matt Keane....Jamie Spillane’s header was so powerful, I’m not sure anyone even saw it until it smashed into the Janesboro net. 1-1. Celtic were a bit unlucky to be reduced to 10 men at this stage, but such was the workrate, it felt as though they had 12 on the field. Janesboro proved their great quality, though, soaking up the pressure, and it was still deadlocked after 95 minutes. Extra-time. Tired bodies now on both sides, but no give in either team. Celtic had the upper hand but needed to prove it or we would be facing a dreaded penalty shootout lottery – at best. Janesboro were down to 10 men now as well – again maybe a little harsh on a night where the officials were top class overall. Jamie Spillane, the official man of the match (Jamie was brilliant, but so was every player in green and white) once again cleared his lines, a clever defence-splitting pass picked out the always-willing Cathal O’Shea. His shot was blocked, but only as far as Stephen Hayes....difficult chance, tight angle....he made it look easy, giving excellent keeper John Mulready no chance at all. Janesboro kept going. Credit where it is due, they definitely died with their boots on, but Celtic had the bit between their teeth now and when the final whistle sounded, that precious goal was still between them. Pack up your kitbags – Killarney Celtic are going hunting! A huge thank you to everyone who has helped us along the road; there’s far more than our great management and players involved in this team! Killarney Celtic: Roy Kelliher, Chris O’Leary, Bren-
dan Falvey, Jamie Spillane, John McDonagh, Pa McGrath, Padraig O’Connor, Wayne Sparling, Matt Keane, Cathal O’Shea, Peter McCarthy. Subs Conor Randall (for Wayne Sparling), Stephen McCarthy, Stephen Hayes (for Matt Keane), Robert Watson, Conall Murphy, Anthony O’Leary (for Brendan Falvey), Conor McCarthy Killarney Celtic have been drawn against competition favourites Sherriff FC of Dublin in a Kerry venue in the semi-final. CONDOLENCES One of the greatest days in Killarney Celtic’s history was tinged with sadness at one particular absence. The game was very competitive for 45 minutes with very little between the teams on the score board. SAFEGUARD SECURITY EAST KERRY SENIOR LEAGUE – ROUND 5 Killarney Legion 2-15 Dr Crokes 1-12 Killarney Legion came away with the league points when they played a young Dr Crokes team in a fast moving, open and sporting game under lights at Dr Crokes pitch on Friday night last. SPA 2-19 GLENFLESK 2-14 Spa had the better first half, starting with an early goal from Craig Hickey, and with Evan Cronin and Mike O’Donoghue on target, the home side led 1-12 to 0-6 at the break, the Glenflesk scores coming from Jeff O’Donoghue and Dara Roche. Glenflesk were stronger in the second half and hit over 6 unanswered points in the third quarter, as well as two goal chances. John Falvey found the net for Spa but Glenflesk replied immediately with a Padraig Healy goal and it was 2-14 to 1-13 approaching the final 10 minutes. Points from Evan Cronin and Mike O’Donoghue extended the Spa lead as Gavin Kelly goaled for Glenflesk in the final minutes of the game to finish 2-19 to 2-14 FOSSA 1-09 GNEEVEGUILLA 1-09 Played in Fossa, this was a hard fought game with an exciting last quarter, in which both sides battled to hold a lead and the game ended on equal scores. O’Shea goal. A scatter of points saw Gneeveguilla reduce the lead to 2 points, 1-1 to 0-2. Gneeveguilla created scoring opportunities only to have the ball trail wide. A brace of Fossa points, Tadgh O’Shea and Domhnaill O’Sullivan on target, gave the homeside a 5 point lead with the break approaching. However, Gneeveguilla finished the half the stronger and it was the goal that stood between the sides at half time: Fossa 1-4 Gneeveguilla 0-4. On the restart, Gneeveguilla took control and reduced the margin to a point, within 4 minutes -1-4 to 0-06. Fossa responded, creating a goal scoring chance but were denied by a great save from the Gneeveguilla Goal keeper, Patrick Riordan. Fossa keeper, Colin Myers, stepped up and pointed from the resultant 45m free. In a swift response, Don Murphy sent a long ball in to Cornelius Buckley who picked out Conor Herlihy. Conor tucked the ball away for a Gneeveguilla goal, and the visitors led 1-6 to 1-5, setting up an intense last quarter. It was tit for tat. Fossa equalised and went ahead a point. Fossa took the lead again with a pointed free and Gneeveguilla levelled the game with a pointed free – 1-8 a piece with 6 minutes remaining. A second yellow card, saw the visitors reduced to 14 players. A great high fielding by Dan O’ Sullivan gave Fossa a ‘mark’. The home side pointed from the free, giving Fossa a 1 point lead as the game went into added time. As time was running out, the excitement grew, Gneeveguilla pointed a free and that proved to be the last score of the game, which ended level. Fossa 1-9 Gneeveguilla 1-9.

BRIGHT START Enthusiasm, energy and lots of action were the by-words last Saturday morning at the Academy as it swung into action on a day borrowed from Summer. A fine crowd of lively children took to all parts of Derreen and it was as serious for those taking part as any All Ireland. While many who attended last year and previous to that had the look of veterans the newer crop could easily be distinguished by the over sized togs and jerseys not to mention the odd extra step when in possession of the ball which in many cases appeared to be the size of a beach ball. Many parents took advantage of the fine day to relax and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air while several others took part in the many coaching sessions all over the field. Remember there is always room for more should anybody desire to get involved - Tosnaíonn gach turas le céim amháin - every journey starts with a single step. GOODBYE TO DENIS While we enjoyed the spirit of the Academy it was tempered by the news that Denis O Sullivan,Pinewood had suddenly passed away. A terrible shock for his family and all those who knew him he was fondly remembered by many in the club who knew and played with him. The Killarney Legion Club extends it’s sincerest sympathy to his parents Denis,Theresa, and the O Sullivan Family on their sad loss,Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a Anam Dílis. LADIES Killarney Legion 3-5 Currow 5-9 Having fought back from 9 pts. down to leave just a goal in it the Ladies just ran out of steam as Currow rallied again to take the points. When one factors in that several senior players were on college duty it augurs well for the remaining campaign. SUPER LEAGUE RD.3 Killarney Legion 2-15 Dr. Crokes 1-12 The seniors continued their steady improvement with an away win in Lewis Rd. under lights. Goals from Conor Culloty and Jamie Sullivan helped them on the their way and once again the younger players got some valuable game time under their belts as the county league approaches. Mid Kerry Gaa
SENIOR LEAGUE ROUND 5 RESULTS Laune Rangers 3-5, Beaufort 0-10
Laune Rangers hosted Beaufort on Sunday afternoon in the final round of Mid Kerry League fixtures before the County Senior Football League begins on March 19th. Beaufort opened the scoring with a point but Rangers equalized with a well-executed Colm O’Shea free. An end to end opening quarter saw plenty of scoring with Beaufort leading by 0-3 to 0-2 with 16 minutes played. Beaufort wing back James O’Reilly got up field to point his side two ahead, but Rangers took the lead in the 24th minute. Rangers midfielder Shane Daly was then lost to injury while his opposite number Ronan Murphy suffered the same fate just minutes later. Neither player played any further part in the contest. Meanwhile, Rangers extended their lead with a second goal, as John Tyther lobbed the ball to the top corner of the net with a speculative effort from 30 yards. This saw Rangers take a four point lead into the break. Half Time Score:Laune Rangers 2-2, Beaufort 0-4. Laune Rangers began the second half as they had finished the first and, with virtually their first attack they nearly scored again as Shane Mangan hit the bottom of the post with a shot following some broken play around the Beaufort square. Rangers did not have to wait too long for the third goal however as John Tyther hit the net for the second time 5 minutes either side of the interval. Beaufort came back into the game and scored four points unanswered through Liam Carey (2) & Fergal Hallissey (2 frees) to leave three between the sides with Rangers leading by 3-2 to 0-8 with eighteen minutes to play. Rangers could have stemmed the flow of Beaufort’s attack during this period but for a number of missed frees in the windy conditions. Laune Rangers responded well to Beaufort’s flurry though, & scored three points unanswered themselves to double the lead. The final whistle was blown to see Rangers maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Full Time score:- Laune Rangers 3-5, Beaufort 0-10. KEEL 1-12 GLENBEIGH/GLENCAR 2-11 Glenbeigh/Glencar faced Keel away from home. The final score was Keel 1-11 Glenbeigh/Glencar 2-10 CHURCH GATE COLLECTIONS will be held in Glenbeigh/Glencar, Kiltallagh, Keel and Miltown this weekend 18th/19th March
