Killarney short film in line for Oscar nomination

Two Killarney natives are part of the team behind ‘Clodagh’, a film that has been shortlisted for the prestigious Academy Awards.

Jessica Guerin, from Beaufort, Killarney, served as Associate Producer and Production Manager on the film, while Siobhan Linehan of Dan Linehan's in Killarney contributed as Production Assistant.

‘Clodagh’, a heartwarming story about a lonely priest's housekeeper who discovers a young Irish dancer, has captivated audiences worldwide.

The film, shot on location in Ireland and featuring a talented cast including Bríd Ní Neachtain (‘The Banshees of Inisherin’) and Katelyn Rose Downey (‘The Nun’), has garnered critical acclaim and numerous accolades at film festivals globally.

"There was talk in early December about ‘Clodagh’ being predicted for an Academy shortlist but you never really think that it might be real! Being included in the official Oscar shortlist has blown us away,” said Jessica.

Jack-knifed truck forces road closure

The N22 Killarney to Farranfore road was closed in both directions on Sunday during the height of the severe snowstorm, causing significant traffic disruption.

The incident occurred at Brennan's Glen where a truck jack-knifed and partially blocked the road.

We must wait for official nominations to be announced but it's beyond exciting to imagine we could be waving the Irish flag in LA next March.”

The film's journey to the Oscar shortlist

“It's surreal but well deserved at the same time. A testament to the talent, vision and hard work of the cast and crew.

Killarney ranked fourth cleanest town

Killarney is in fourth place in the latest IBAL Anti-Litter League survey.

This result comes just over a year after the town introduced the 2GoCup, highlighting the potential impact of such initiatives. .

“Given the evident success of this initiative in Killarney, it is perplexing why other towns have not yet followed suit,” said Conor Horgan, spokesperson for IBAL.

The survey, which assesses litter levels

in 40 Irish towns and cities, designated Killarney as "cleaner than European norms." This marks a significant improvement from their 14th place ranking in 2023.

The report commended specific areas within the town, including the car park at Killarney Outlet Centre, the open space near Rock Road, and the well-maintained Main Street. Notably, the survey found no heavily littered sites in Killarney.

"We urge other towns to follow suit and

has been remarkable. It has been selected for prestigious festivals like Tribeca, Short Shorts & Asia, and HollyShorts, and has won awards at Cleveland Film Festival, Belfast Film Festival, and Cork Film Festival.

explore additional measures like a levy on disposable cups."

In contrast, Tralee, while showing some improvement, fell short of achieving "clean" status, ranking 28th overall.

The report acknowledged the efforts of Tralee Tidy Towns and local businesses but highlighted areas requiring improvement, such as Tralee Train Station. While the national survey results show an overall stagnation in litter levels, there are positive takeaways. The introduction of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) has led to a significant decrease in plastic bottles and cans found on Irish streets. The survey also found a decrease in litter blackspots, indicating improved waste management by local authorities.

This resulted in a lengthy traffic backlog extending as far back as the Cleeney roundabout in Killarney. Gardaí and council crews responded to the incident, and a snow plough and other equipment were dispatched to assist in clearing the road.

Some of the rural roads that emergency services had to contend with this week

Snowstorm highlights ambulance shortages in rural Kerry

This week’s severe snowstorm has highlighted significant resource shortages within the Health Service Executive (HSE) in rural Kerry, particularly in terms of emergency response capabilities.

Heavy snowfall left many residents in isolated rural areas cut off from essential services.

While the HSE was unable to deploy an all-terrain ambulance to reach those in need, community groups stepped in to fill the void. Killarney Fire and Rescue, the Order of Malta, the Civil Defence, and the Red Cross were on hand to deliver essential medications and food supplies to stranded households.

The situation reached a critical point when Killarney Fire and Rescue was called to transport a patient from the Killarney South Doc Clinic to University Hospital Kerry on Sunday during the height of the snowstorm.

The HSE lacked the necessary all-terrain vehicle to navigate the challenging road

conditions, forcing the fire service to assume this crucial role.

Cllr Martin Grady, who also serves as a fire officer, said there is urgent need for the HSE to invest in an all-terrain ambulance. "

This week's weather event should serve as a wake-up call," said Cllr Grady. "Living in the foothills of Ireland's highest mountains and with our proximity to the coast, an ATV ambulance would be invaluable throughout the year, not just during extreme weather events."

He called on the HSE to address these resource deficiencies and invest in the necessary equipment and personnel to ensure the safety and well-being of rural communities.

Street crews the unsung heroes

Killarney Municipal District crews were out in force early on Tuesday morning clearing snow and ice from the town's roads, streets, and footpaths.

Main Street was a key focus, with crews working to ensure safe passage for pedestrians and motorists.

Road sweepers were deployed to clear snow from roads near the HaHa, Muckross Road, and Mission Road.

Workers were also active on Lewis Road, addressing any remaining ice patches. A spokesperson for Kerry County Coun-

cil said: "As well as working to make Kerry's roads safer, Council crews have also been busy clearing and treating footpaths and cycle lanes in the county's towns. This is crucial to make this vital infrastructure safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and other active travel users, as we transition from snow and slush to a prolonged icy spell."

NPWS to expand educational facilities

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has submitted a planning application to Kerry County Council for the construction of a new nature education centre within Killarney National Park.

The proposed development, located in Torc, Muckross, will involve the demolition of existing shed structures and the conversion of a former stable building into a dedicated nature education centre.

The centre will include classrooms, science labs, offices, cloakrooms, sanitary facilities, stores, plant rooms, a pavilion structure, a bat house, and a glasshouse.

The proposed development will be accessed from the existing site entrance onto the N71.

In a separate planning application, the NPWS has also sought permission for a range of development works at Friars Glen Guesthouse in Cloghereen Lower, Muckross.

This includes a change of use from tourist accommodation and domestic usage to office usage, with associated internal changes; the construction of a staff carpark with low-level lighting; the construction of a 450sqm store; the installation of security gates at the entrance; and all associated site works.

StepAhead offers a solution for mentees ranging from secondary school students to recent graduates, providing them with invaluable insights from those with

Kerry Mountain Rescue Team assists community during snowstorm

Kerry Mountain Rescue Team has assisted the community during the recent snowstorm.

In addition to their usual mountain rescue duties, the team has been using their vehicles to help members of the public who were stranded or in difficulty on roads around the county.

They also played a crucial role in transporting healthcare workers to hospitals and medical facilities.

Meanwhile, the team has warned about the avalanche risk in the MacGillycuddy Reeks.

Significant snow accumulations have occurred on all slopes, and the avalanche hazard is likely to be high in certain areas

until thaw-freeze cycles consolidate the snowpack.

The team said that the primary danger currently lies in the approaches to all trailheads, where lying snow and ice are creating extremely hazardous driving conditions.

Kerry Mountain Rescue Team continues to monitor the situation.

fresh experiences in their desired fields.. This innovative concept gained recognition on the world stage last December. StepAhead was selected as one of only 10 projects globally to pitch at the prestigious Red Bull Basement 2024 World Final in Tokyo, Japan.

“To represent Ireland and to be recognised at the Red Bull Basement main stage among the top 10 finalists was an incredible honour. It demonstrated to us how universal the need is for good, real-world mentorship and guidance,” said Walsh.

“For the year ahead, our focus will be on advancing the development of the StepAhead platform and forging strategic partnerships to bring our vision to life, with the goal of formally launching the platform in Q3 this year. With a mission to re-engineer how people access career guidance, we believe StepAhead has the potential to make a significant impact not only in Ireland but around the world.”

Goal Mile on Christmas Day raises €1,162.50 for charity

The annual Goal Mile, held on Christmas Day, raised €1,162.50 for two worthy causes.

This year, the event raised funds for Goal, an international humanitarian organisation, and the Kerry-Cork Healthcare service.

Goal's 2024 Mile project is focused on providing lifesaving aid to refugees in Sudan. The funds raised will support the establishment of aid stations to provide food, water, and medical care to millions of people fleeing conflict and famine.

Locally, the funds raised will support the Kerry-Cork Healthcare service. This vital service provides transportation for individuals from North and South Kerry to attend medical appointments at University Hospital Cork and University Hospital Limerick.

"My sincere thanks to all who attended the event and contributed both in person

and online," said Anne Mangan, organiser of the event. "Such generosity was beyond our expectations and very much appreciated by both organisations. Míle Buíochas."

Tralee Sports Complex indefinitely closed following roof collapse

Tralee Sports Complex has been indefinitely closed to the public following a roof collapse on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to the facility at approximately 7am after the roof of the sports hall collapsed. The building was unoccupied at the time of the incident.

The building and grounds have been secured, and a comprehensive assessment is underway to determine the extent of the damage and the next steps for the facility.

Opened in 1977, the Tralee Sports Complex is a popular community hub, attracting over 300,000 visits annually. It offers a range of facilities, including a 25-meter swimming pool, a learner's pool, a sports hall, a gym, squash courts, handball courts, and astroturf pitches. The complex is a cooperative venture owned by Kerry County Council and the Kerry Education and Training Board and managed by Tralee Regional Sports & Leisure Centre CLG on a not-for-profit basis.

Jim Finucane, Chair of Tralee Regional Sports & Leisure Centre CLG said: "The

safety of our patrons and staff is our top priority. We are working closely with the relevant authorities to assess the situation and determine the next steps. We understand that this closure will cause significant disruption to the community, and we will do everything possible to minimize the impact."

The Tralee Sports Complex plays a vital role in the community, providing recreational and sporting opportunities for people of all ages. The closure will undoubtedly have a significant impact on local sports clubs, schools, and individuals who use the facility regularly.

The cause of the roof collapse is currently under investigation.

Browne’s Agri, Steel & Builders Providers expand into Southwest

Browne’s Agri Steel & Builders Providers recently completed the acquisition of O’Shea’s Merchant Business in Deelis Bridge, Cahersiveen.

The O’Shea family originally established the business in the 1950’s to cater for the local farming community and the then thriving turf-fired power station, which was located adjacent to where the business now stands.

Through the years the business devel-

oped from a grocery store to one of the leading suppliers of all things Agricultural and Building supplies in South Kerry.

The business thrived under the stewardship of Bernard O’Shea, son of Bat and Peg, until his untimely death in 2013.

After Bernard’s sad passing the business continued under Bat O’Shea, his able

assistant John O’Shea, Aine McGill and James Moran.

In April last year negotiations commenced between the O’Shea family and the management team in Browne’s. Bat and the O’Shea family were hopeful the ownership of the business would stay in Kerry hands and that their team and their customers would continue to get great care and consideration.

Browne’s have been operating the business since September 2 and have commenced with a plan of upgrading the shop, warehouses, and the rebranding of the business.

Browne’s General Manager, Dennis

O’Connor said: “I am delighted to have taken over the business, having met with Mr O’Shea and the O’Shea family, it was critical that we assured them that we would be able to look after the team and their customers, which having concluded a number of these acquisitions in the past, it is refreshing to see a business owner put the people who were key to growing their business at the top of their criteria for making the ultimate decision.

Browne’s has always had a strong customer base in South Kerry, and we are delighted that the new addition will allow us to strengthen that position and to offer our customer base an even better service in the future.”

Dromhall Hotel coffee morning postponed

The Dromhall Hotel has been forced to postpone its Nollaig na mBan coffee morning, originally scheduled for January 6, due to severe weather conditions.

The event, held in conjunction with the Killarney branch of Kerry Hospice, aimed to celebrate Women's Little Christmas with coffee, tea, and treats while supporting a vital local charity.

"We are disappointed to have to post-

pone our Nollaig na mBan coffee morning," said Bernadette Randles, "However, the safety of our guests and staff is our top priority."

Nollaig na mBan, a unique Irish tradition celebrated primarily in Cork and Kerry, marks the end of the Christmas season.

The Dromhall Hotel coffee morning was intended to provide an opportunity for women to socialise and enjoy a well-deserved break after the festive period while raising funds for the local hospice.

Wildfires ravage Los Angeles

Raging wildfires have engulfed Los Angeles County, leaving at least five dead, destroying hundreds of homes, and straining firefighting and water resources to their limits.

Over 100,000 residents have been forced to evacuate as hurricane-force winds and dry conditions continue to fuel the blazes, which have burned unchecked for two days.

A new fire erupted in the Hollywood Hills, prompting additional evacuations, according to Fire Chief Kristin Crowley. This brings the total number of active wildfires in the county to six. Among these, four major fires remain completely uncontained, with significant threats on both the eastern and western edges

of the city.

The Sunset Fire, located in the Hollywood Hills, has scorched 50 acres, endangering iconic locations like Hollywood Boulevard and its Walk of Fame.

While helicopter crews have slowed its spread with water drops, the fire could threaten landmarks such as the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory if it crosses the 101 Freeway.

Meanwhile, on the west side, the Palisades Fire has devastated 15,832 acres and destroyed 1,000 structures, stretching from Santa Monica and Malibu to Topanga Canyon before reaching the Pacific Ocean.

Officials report it as one of the most destructive fires in Los Angeles history.

To the east, the Eaton Fire has consumed 10,600 acres in the San Gabriel Mountain foothills, claiming five lives, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna reported.

Thick smoke blankets the skies over Los Angeles, painting them red in many areas, while nearly 1 million homes and businesses have lost power. Water shortages and depleted firefighting crews are compounding the crisis, particularly in affluent areas like Pacific Palisades.

Private forecaster AccuWeather estimates economic damages and losses from these fires exceed $50 billion.

"We simply don’t have enough firefighters to tackle fires of this scale across the county," said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone.

The fires have also disrupted daily life, with the announcement of Oscar nominations postponed by two days. As Los Angeles battles this unprecedented challenge, its residents and first responders face a gruelling fight to save lives and property.

Nearly half of Kerry cars fail NCT tests in 2024

Nearly half of all National Car Tests (NCTs) conducted in Kerry during 2024 failed the full test, reflecting national trends.

According to NCT data, 49% of the 60,000 tests carried out in Kerry resulted in failures, similar to the national average of 50% across 1.7 million tests. Cars that fail the NCT can receive a major fail, requiring repairs within 30 days before retesting, or a dangerous fail, prohibiting road use until repaired and retested. Cahersiveen had one of the highest rates of dangerous fails nationally, with 9% of its tests receiving this designation, ranking fifth in the country. Overall, 51% of Cahersiveen’s tests passed, while 40% had major fails. In Tralee, of the 25,000 tests conducted, 51% passed, with 41% receiving major fails and 7% dangerous fails. Killarney and Castleisland recorded similar results, with around 52% passing and 7% of vehicles receiving dangerous fails.

Trump hints at assertive foreign policy

In a recent press conference at Mar-a-Lago, President-elect Donald Trump outlined several assertive foreign policy initiatives concerning Greenland, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Panama Canal. Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland, citing national security and economic benefits.

He did not dismiss the possibility of using military force to achieve this goal, stating, "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity."

This proposal has been met with firm resistance from Denmark and Greenland.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirmed that Greenland is not for sale, and Greenlandic Premier Múte Egede emphasised their autonomy, stating, "Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale."

Trump also announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," asserting that the U.S. plays a predominant role in the region. He remarked, "We're going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring." This proposal has sparked reactions from neighbouring countries. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum humorously

suggested renaming the U.S. as "Mexican America," referencing historical maps to highlight the longstanding nomenclature of the Gulf.

The President-elect expressed intentions to reclaim U.S. control over the Panama Canal, criticising the current management and fees imposed on American vessels. He stated, "We should never have given away the Panama Canal. We built it; we owned it."

Panama's leadership has responded assertively. President José Raúl Mulino emphasised Panama's sovereignty over the canal, stating that the fees are justified based on operational costs.

New historic wonders revealed in Egypt

Egypt has revealed remarkable new archaeological finds, including 4,000-year-old tombs of elite officials and intricate artwork dating to the reign of Queen Hatshepsut.

These discoveries were made at the historic necropolis of Thebes in Luxor.

The artefacts, unearthed after a threeyear excavation in the Deir al-Bahari area on Luxor’s west bank, were announced by renowned Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, who led the project alongside Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The discoveries span the 15th dynasty (1650–1550 BC) to the influential 18th dynasty (1550–1292 BC), which produced legendary figures like Queen Hatshepsut and King Tutankhamun. Among the highlights are the intact remains of the valley temple's foundation from Hatshepsut’s funerary complex and vibrant bas-relief artwork. These pieces include vividly preserved scenes of the queen and her successor, Thutmose III, engaged in sacred rituals.

Ryanair enforces zero-tolerance policy on disruptive behaviour

Ryanair has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy toward disruptive behaviour on its flights by filing a civil claim against a passenger accused of causing significant disruption.

The airline has warned that this legal action will not be its last as it seeks to deter similar incidents in the future.

The case, filed on December 20 in the Circuit Court, seeks over €15,000 in damages for an incident that occurred on April 9, 2023. A flight from Dublin to Lanzarote was forced to divert to Porto, Portugal, leaving the plane grounded overnight. The diversion resulted in accommodation expenses for all 160 pas-

sengers onboard.

Ryanair's Chief Marketing Officer, Dara Brady, spoke on the importance of protecting passengers and crew from unruly behaviour, describing it as "unacceptable." He added, "This court action sends a strong message: if you misbehave or disrupt our flights, we will take action to safeguard our passengers and crew, who do an excellent job managing difficult situations."

Brady noted that disruptive behaviour can range from verbal abuse to physical altercations, often linked to alcohol consumption. He expressed confidence that the possibility of civil action or state prosecution would lead passengers to reconsider their actions.

Dr. Hawass, who personally unveiled the findings, described one of the carved reliefs as "the most beautiful scene I have ever seen in my life." He noted this discovery marks the first comprehensive program of temple decoration dating back to the 18th dynasty. Beneath the temple’s foundation, archaeologists uncovered ceremonial tools inscribed with Queen Hatshepsut’s name. Other significant finds include rock-cut tombs of Middle Kingdom officials and an 18th-dynasty tomb belonging to "the Overseer of the Palace" of Queen Tetisheri, grandmother of King Ahmose I. Ahmose famously expelled the Hyksos, a foreign group that had controlled the Nile Delta for nearly a century.

Additional findings include burial shafts containing wooden coffins adorned with 17th-dynasty feather motifs, children’s graves with toys, and more.

The announcement comes as Egypt works to reinvigorate its vital tourism sector. Last year, the country welcomed over 15 million visitors.

finds stay-at-home

parent's role valued at €57,140

New research by Royal London Ireland finds the annual equivalent salary of a stay-at-home parent is €57,140, up from €54,590 in 2023 and €40,560 in 2015.

The study assessed daily tasks like childcare, cooking, cleaning, and chauffeuring, estimating the cost of hiring professionals for these roles. Despite this significant value, a survey of 1,000 adults showed nearly 90% underestimated it. Only 11% believed the role was worth over €50,000 annually, while nearly a third valued it between €20,000 and

€30,000. Women were three times more likely than men to accurately assess the role’s financial worth. Census data from 2022 revealed 272,318 stayat-home parents in Ireland, with women comprising 90%. Karen O’Flaherty, Senior Propositions Executive at Royal London Ireland, stressed the economic importance of stay-at-home parents, noting a 43% gap between public perception and the actual financial cost of their contributions, which encompass childcare, household management, and emotional support.

Revenue collected €591m in compliance interventions last year

The Revenue Commissioners conducted 311,000 audits and compliance interventions in 2024, resulting in €591 million in payments to the Exchequer, according to newly released data.

This follows the publication of Exchequer returns, which revealed €107 billion was collected in taxes and duties over the year.

Revenue reported strong compliance rates across all tax categories. However, 256 tax avoidance cases were resolved, generating €46 million, while 20 criminal convictions were secured for serious tax evasion and fraud. Additionally, 74 tax settlements were disclosed in the list of tax defaulters.

The debt warehousing scheme, which ended on May 1, 2024, saw €3 billion of the €3.2 billion in warehoused debt either settled or secured through payment plans. Revenue highlighted that over 7,000 businesses failed to engage meaningfully to resolve their debts by the May 1 deadline, leading to their removal from

the scheme.

Revenue Commissioner Ruth Kennedy stated that 97% of agreed payment plans are being honoured, with monitoring ongoing. Beyond the scheme, €1.8 billion in unpaid taxes remains for collection, and Revenue’s debt management system is actively pursuing these liabilities. During 2024, 57,000 referrals to enforcement agents resulted in the recovery of €230 million.

Revenue also achieved significant results in combating illicit trade, seizing a record 112 million cigarettes worth €95 million. Additionally, 64,000 kilograms of drugs, valued at an estimated €215 million, were confiscated.

Goodbye 2024 – welcome 2025

2024 was an eventful year in the property market. Here at DNG Ted Healy we were acknowledged for our property marketing at the DNG Annual Conference & Awards, this coming hot on the heels of being named a branch office of the year in 2023.

We take great pride is being recognised for these awards as they are a testament to our clients that they are receiving the best in class service.

2024 was a year that saw continued shortage of available properties in the market. The number of second-hand homes available in the market nationally in Dec was less than 10,500, the lowest number recorded in 20 yrs.

Prices in the Munster Region increased by 9% on average, up from 7.1% in 2023 and 5.2% in 2022.

The average price of a home in Kerry is now €283,483, 11.6% up on 2022 and a whopping 41.6% up on pre covid fig-

ures.

The median price of a new home in Kerry now stands at €390,000.

So what is in store for 2025?

Expect continued shortage of supply – this will once again prove the biggest challenge in the market this year. On the demand side, falling interest rates are helping the affordability issue and supporting the appetite for many to buy. Population growth figures continue to increase and with a strong economic backdrop of rising employment and wages, demand will continue in the years ahead. The ongoing scarcity of new housing

units is having a ripple effect, constraining the number of 2nd hand properties entering the market – this is likely to continue.

It is unlikely we will see any big shift in either demand or supply in 2025. First-time buyers and downsizers will continue to compete against each other for well-located homes when they do become available. The market is likely to continue a-pace into 2025.

Here at DNG Ted Healy, we will have a number of new listings appearing on the market in the coming weeks – keep an eye on our various platforms for details as they arise.

We are always on the look out for more properties for our expanding database of buyers so get in touch for your free DNG valuation if you are considering selling in 2025.

College application deadlines for Leaving Cert students

2025 will be a very busy year for Leaving Cert students and their parents/guardians. Although final decisions can be made later in the year, there are important dates and deadlines coming up in the next couple of months.

These include application dates and deadlines for CAO, UCAS, HPAT, HEAR and DARE and in many cases the deadlines are final and non-negotiable so it is very important to take note of those which are relevant.

January 11: National Application Information Day for anyone applying to the HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) or DARE (Disability Access Route to Education). Information events are taking place in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) nationwide. See www.accesscollege.ie for details of all events.

January 17: HPAT online registration and payment must be completed by anyone applying for Medicine on https:// hpat-ireland.acer.org/

January 20: Deadline for CAO applicants to avail of the discounted fee of €30, applications after this date will cost €45. January 29: This is the equal consideration deadline for application to UCAS, the system for applying to universities in the UK. See www.ucas.com

February 1:Normal closing date for CAO applications. While changes can be made from May 6 to July 1 to course choices there are some restrictions. Students applying for ‘Restricted’ courses must include them by February 1st. This is also the deadline for any mature applicants (Over 23) and for anyone applying for HEAR or DARE to apply to CAO. Full details and lots of helpful resources are available on www.cao.ie

February 1: 2025 applications for Joint Tertiary Degrees will open and remain

Kerry Diocesan pilgrimage to Fatima - places available

open until September. This is a pathway which is outside of CAO and therefore is not based on points. For more details see – www.nto.hea.ie

March 1: – Deadline for applicants to complete the online HEAR and DARE forms through their CAO account. This is also the deadline for mature applicants to complete the relevant extra section of their CAO form.

March 15 – HEAR and DARE supporting documentation must have been sent and arrive by post to the CAO Offices. While these dates and deadlines are very important at this stage, there is no rush to make final decisions about course choices now and there will be time to change your mind as the year goes on. It is also important to remember that there are lots of other pathways open to school leavers and adults outside of CAO (and the deadlines mentioned above) which include PLC (Post Leaving Cert) courses in colleges of further education (FET), traineeships, apprenticeships, study abroad options and supported educational programmes.

The Kerry Diocesan are planning a 4-night pilgrimage to Fatima from May 11 – 15.

Organised by Barter’s Travelnet and led by Bishop Ray Browne, this is an extraordinary chance to experience the powerful atmosphere of Fatima firsthand.

Fatima is one of the most visited Marian shrines in Europe whereby the Kerry Diocesan were the first Irish Diocesan to travel to Fatima in 1983 led at the time by Bishop McNamara.

This year’s pilgrimage includes coach transfer from Kerry to Shannon Airport, return flights to Porto, four nights’ accommodation in a a four-star hotel including half board and finishes with a panoramic city tour of Porto on the day of departure.

Each year the pilgrimage partakes in the Vigil torchlight procession and the Feast Day celebrations.

During their stay, guests will get the opportunity to visit Aljustrel, to walk the outdoor stations of the cross, stopping

to see the site where Our Lady appeared on August 19, 1917 and where the Angel appeared to the children the year before the apparitions.

In 1917, three children, Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco reported seeing visions of Our Lady in a small town in central Portugal called Fatima.

The apparitions of Our Lady happened on the 13 of each month between May and October apart from August where Our Lady appeared to them in Valinhos on the 19.

The final apparition happened on October 13, Our Lady foretold in July that she would perform a miracle in October, and this was witnessed by 70,000 people. This miracle became known as the miracle of the sun.

Barter’s Travelnet ensures a seamless escorted pilgrimage experience, handling all travel arrangements and providing full support throughout the journey.

Crokes now Kildare bound after semi gets snowed off

- Kerry champs set for rescheduled semi-final as weather wreaks havoc

- Favourites Stacks dumped out of intermediate by Ballinderry

ALL-IRELAND SENIOR CLUB SEMI-FINAL

Dr Crokes v Errigal Ciaran Saturday 3pm Newbridge

Dr Crokes’ All-Ireland semi-final showdown with Errigal Ciaran of Tyrone was snowed off last weekend with the tie now down for decision tomorrow (Saturday) at 3pm at the new location of Newbridge.

The original date (Sunday, January 5) was scrapped 24 hours prior to throwin after the pitch at O’Moore Park in Portlaoise was deemed unplayable. The other senior semi-final between Cuala of Dublin and Coolera-Strandhill of Sligo was also postponed as the extreme wintry conditions left pitches around many parts of the country blanketed with snow. That game will now be staged tomorrow at 5pm in Breffni Park, Cavan. Both semi-finals will be live on TG4. Kerry intermediate champions Austin Stacks might be ruing the fact that the snow didn’t quite hit Dublin, which meant their All-Ireland semi-final did go ahead at Parnell Park as planned. Unfortunately for the Tralee club they subsequently fell to a surprising 0-11 to 0-7 defeat at the hands of Ballinderry of Derry. With talismanic midfielder Joe O’Connor ruled out with a grade 2C quad tear, Stacks were unable to live up to their favourites tag as Ballinderry booked their spot in the final where they will face Crossmolina Deel Rovers of Mayo. The decider will be played on Sunday at 4.30pm in Croke Park.

In other GAA news, the Killarney Legion have confirmed that former player and underage coach Nigel Shevlin will be taking over as manager of their men’s senior football team for 2025. The Louth native replaces the outgoing Garry McGrath in the hotseat. Shevlin will be joined on the sideline by Jamie O’Sullivan (coach), Chris Davies and Philip Gammell (both selectors). KJ Griffin will continue in his role as statistician for the team, a position he has filled for the last two seasons

Shevlin will be hoping to guide Legion to success in Division 1 of the County League, the Kerry Intermediate Club Championship and the O’Donoghue Cup.

The original tie was scrapped when the pitch in Portlaoise was deemed unplayable.

Historic National Cup semi for St Paul’s

PAUDIE O’CONNOR CUP

SEMI-FINAL

Utility Trust St Paul’s v Killester

Saturday 6pm

Neptune Stadium, Cork

| By Enda Walshe

The biggest game in St Paul’s history comes this Saturday when they face Killester in the semi-final of the Paudie O’Connor National Cup.

The cup is named after one of Killarney's greatest sons, the pioneering Irish international who changed the face of Irish basketball in the late 1970s. It was Paudie, of course, who introduced the first American players to the country and started a revolution in the game, the benefits of which are still being felt today. Outside of that he has also been lauded as one of the best Irish basketball players ever. He grew up only a stone's throw away from where James Fleming was

TEAM SPIRIT: Underdogs St Paul's are one step away from a National Cup final.

reared and that gives the St Paul's cup run some special significance.

Paul’s find themselves in the last four alongside the top three in the Super League at this juncture and, despite being ranked lower in the standings, they are there on merit.

The Killarney girls will come up against Killester, a formidable unit who sit third in the Super League table with a 70% win record. They accounted for UCC The Address Glanmire in a low-scoring quarter-final tussle. They trailed heading into the final quarter but a Samantha Haiby inspired charge got them over the line.

Haiby has been outstanding this season for the reigning league champions, averaging 23 points per game. She is likely to wield a big influence in this clash.

Irish international Michelle Clarke is another serious operator (second only to Haiby in the scoring stats) while Destiny Strother gives her US compatriot strong support. Hannah Thornton returned to the squad in mid-November and her

performance levels are steadily climbing. One area of concern for Killester has been the fitness of Ieva Bagdanaviciene who has sat out the last two weeks and they will be moving heaven and earth to give her a chance of playing.

For James Fleming the season has been a mixed bag. There have been huge signs of quality that show they can compete with the country's best, and the league clash with Killester is probably the best example of that. They put in a tremendous performance for 35 out of 40 minutes and led by five points. But they just fell short in the end, a trend that continued against the Liffey Celtics and Waterford Wildcats.

In their quarter final against Trinity Meteors they brewed up the perfect storm of defensive intensity and offensive efficiency to grab an epic win.

The squad Fleming has assembled provides flexibility with Alex Wittinger, Megan Ormiston and Gracen Kerr giving him a selection headache. The influence of

Lorraine Scanlon is still huge and alongside Denise Dunlea, Síofra O Shea and Meabh Barry they are the heartbeat of the squad.

Mathilde Diop will give Killester a different conundrum as she didn't face them in that league clash. The lionhearted Lynn Jones stood up to the plate against Glanmire at the weekend and alongside Meabh Barry they are the ultimate team players.

It remains to be seen if the weekend has come too early for Rheanne O'Shea and Leah McMahon - either player's availability would be a huge boost.

It is a tough task for St Paul’s but they have shown the necessary quality at plenty of stages throughout the season to date. It'll be a case of getting all the moving parts right on the night. If they can do that there's no reason why they can't push Killester all the way and maybe set up a historic cup final date against the winners of Liffey Celtics and Waterford Wildcats.

Killarney marksman Doolan makes Ireland U18 squad

Talented St Brendan’s College and Killarney Athletic youngster Luke Doolan has been selected on a 24-man Ireland U18 schools squad after impressing in a recent trial match against Bray Wanderers. Doolan scored one goal and assisted another during his 45-minute cameo, following on from his previous outing in green which saw him score twice in a match in Athlone. His performances have clearly caught the eye of his coaches and he will be hoping to be included in the final 18-man match squad for the upcoming friendly against

Australia.

The fifth-year Sem student has been in electrifying form for both the Athletic youths and senior teams this season, frequently bagging multiple goals in single games.

In November he scored a hat-trick for Brendan Moloney’s seniors in an FAI Junior Cup tie against Ballingarry, and in December he found the back of the net on five occasions for the youths against Waterford Crystal.

BOY IN GREEN: Up-and-coming Killarney Athletic striker Luke Doolan.

In conversation with pitch and putt star Damien Fleming

Success in sport is nothing new to the Fleming family on Lewis Road. Tadhgie Fleming won seven O‘Donoghue Cup medals with the highly successful Dr Crokes teams of the late 50s and 60s. The dashing, speedy half forward also won a Kerry Senior Hurling Championship medal with the Killarney team in 1969.

His son James excelled in the same wing forward position, winning eight O’Donoghue Cups and captaining Dr Crokes in one of his seven Kerry County Championship wins over a glorious decade. He was also a very good basketball player and is now a gifted coach with Utility Trust St Paul’s, steering them to the Division 1 title in 2023 and promotion to the Super League where they are operating this season. James was duly recognised at national level by being awarded the Manager of the Year commendation.

And his younger brother Damien has also hit the headlines by winning at local, county, national and international levels.

Earlier this week I discussed these phenomenal successes with Damien.

Eamonn Fitzgerald: Damien, the obvious question is why did you not opt for football, hurling, or basketball, instead going for pitch and putt?

Damien Fleming: Actually, I did play football at juvenile level and dabbled in basketball but once I started playing pitch and putt, I concentrated on it and knew it was for me.

When did you start?

I remember so well the day my father brought me up to Deerpark. I was five years old with two clubs that were too big for me then and a small ball. I liked it. I was hooked and instead of playing in the other parks, Deerpark was to become my favourite park.

What is the attraction of the small ball game?

Like all sports, it gives you an outlet for

competition. You need very little equipment, and the game can be played in an hour on your own or a little longer if a few are playing together. That’s an important consideration if leisure time is at a premium due to work or family commitments. I liked it and stuck with it, thank God, always with huge background support and encouragement from my mother Maureen, sister Louise, and my wife Sharon.

Many players start with pitch and putt and then switch to golf… I did both. I also played golf [Damien is too modest to say he played off a handicap of 5 when he was 18 years old]. It is a great game, but a round takes up half a day and in the pitch and putt I get this great vibe that spurs me on to do even better in every round.

Your successes at all levels right up to the World Cup have been phenomenal.

I love the game and I practice, which is essential. After all, it boils down to an accurate, well-judged pitch and a single putt as often as possible.

I remember playing golf on a few occasions with Derry McCarthy and once he got within 100 yards of the green, he was confident that at worst he would hole out in three shots: the green in one, and if it was anything within 10 feet it was invariably a single putt.

Yes, Derry was an outstanding winner at all levels and continues to be a great help and advisor to me and to anyone else who plays at Deerpark. He’s great sportsman and a pure gentleman who

does phenomenal work at Deerpark and it’s no fluke that so many other young players in the Deerpark club are winning national titles.

You are a very consistent putter. How do you manage so many single putts? Practice, practice, and the more you practice with purpose, not just lagging it up to the hole, the better you become. I have a routine that suits me, and I use the same stroke every time once I have taken all considerations into account such as a fast green, a borrow on the left, wind and other peculiarities. Then I putt with confidence and it works most of the time. Of course, you win some and lose others with the ball hanging on the edge of the hole waiting for a little wind for that lovely clink. Fortunately, most go in directly.

ACHIEVEMENT:

Damien Fleming and Derry McCarthy of Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club pictured with the National Men's Matchplay Championship Cup. They are the only two players from Kerry to win the prestigious title.

CHAMPION:

Damien Fleming of Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club after winning the National Matchplay Championship in Kildare in 2021.

What was your lowest round ever?

I often shot 39 or 40 but the lowest was 38 at one of my favourite courses, Rocklodge in Cork.

That was incredible, and I am told you were just 23 years old at that time? Yes, and everything has to go right for you on such a day, certainly a day to remember.

A very low handicapper once said to me that if wind and rain were the prevailing conditions on competition day, 80% of the players had no chance of winning. How do you manage when the weather is very bad? He is correct and I would say up to 90% could not bring in a winning score in such weather conditions. Most people don’t like playing in bad weather conditions, but I can manage it very well. Mentally you adjust and play different shots like playing low shots under the wind and allowing for a slower pace on the putts due to wet greens. That’s where your hours of practice pay off. There you learn the different types of shots to be perfected. I remember Gooch once saying that it’s great to have one very strong, accurate leg in football but you need to master both feet to give you better scoring options. David Clifford doesn’t turn it on in Croke Park on the big day without practicing endlessly with both legs in his local Fossa pitch.

There are so many highlights in your playing career. Three Irish Opens: Royal Meath in 2009, that memorable one at home at Deerpark in 2011, and Seapoint, Co. Louth in 2018. Three National Match Plays: Collinstown in 2011, Rocklodge in 2019, and Ryston, Kildare in 2021. And winning the World Cup with the Irish team in El Venderil, Spain. That must have been the top one. Success at international level in any sport is a major achievement.

Yes, that was great, but the one that gave me the greatest satisfaction was completing the Irish Double of Match Play and topping it off with Strokeplay in Glenville, Dublin.

That is a rare occurrence for anyone and again your modesty not mentioning that in 2018 and 2019 you held all major titles in the game, the two Nationals and Irish Open, a feat not done before. Most serious sports competitors follow a definite tried and trusted routine. You probably have a preference for a certain brand of golf ball. No doubt about that, always a Titleist Pro V and it must be a number 3 and that shamrock logo added for good luck.

Does it disappoint you that relative to other sports pitch and putt does not get decent coverage in the media even when there are national successes?

Not really, except for winning the World Cup which got little publicity. We are fortunate that Jason O’Connor (journalist) does such a wonderful job promoting the game and of course, he has won so much himself as a player and his work as a club officer at Deerpark is second to none.

Your sporting ambition for 2025, Damien?

Continue to enjoy the game, be as competitive as possible in all competitions, and I would dearly love to win the All-Ireland inter-county title with Kerry. That title has eluded us since 1986.

Take your cue from the Kerry LGFA. They won their All-Ireland in 2023 after a 31-year gap. Damien. It is great to interview you, you are such a talented achiever in pitch and putt at the highest levels. Keep those single putts dropping and you may well sign for an unbelievable 31 in 2025.

• Damien is married to Sharon, and they have three daughters, Caoimhe, Éadaíon and Grace. Best of luck to his brother James with Utility Trust St Paul’s in the National Cup semi-final away to Neptune this weekend. A win would be a huge boost.

I have a routine that suits me, and I use the same stroke every time. DAMIEN FLEMING

M.E.K. Conn McGlynn x2 James Marshall x1 Ryan Twomey x1. The Blues welcomed MEK to Woodlawn this morning. The cold weather didn’t affect either team as they played out an entertaining game of football. Both sides created chances, but it was James who opened the scoring for the home side after some great work down the right-hand side from Brendan and Kenneth. The away side responded and got an equaliser after a mix up at the back. Our boys responded when conn got his first of the day after a second assist from Kenneth. MEK continued to fight back and pulled 2 back from a corner and a free kick to go into the break 3-2 up. The boys started the second half well as conn continued his goal scoring form to get his second of the day. He could’ve had added more to his goal tally if it wasn’t for some excellent saves from the MEK keeper. Both sides were now fighting for a winner in this goal fest and with 20 minutes to go, it was the away side who got the goal to go ahead. With less than 10 minutes to go it seemed like it was going to be another game where we would lose after leading in the game but to be fair to our boys they’ve learned from those games and never gave up. Captain Twomey got the equaliser with a brilliant finish into the bottom left-hand corner in the final moments of the game after some excellent work down the right-hand side from Alan. Both teams pushed for a winner again, but it ended all square at the final whistle which was probably a fair result. Thanks to MEK for a sporting game. Massive thanks to Eamon O’Callaghan at Killarney Coaches who kindly sponsored half zips for our U16 ‘B’ team. Killarney coaches are located at Rockfield, Tralee Rd, Killarney and

aim to offer a 5-star travel experience. From family tours, golf trips, days touring from Killarney and much more. Contact info: 087 268 0000. Email: info@ killarneycoaches.ie.

U16 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 3-2 Park. Jamie Fleming 2, Alex Doolan. Our U16s welcomed Park to Woodlawn Saturday morning and in freezing conditions came away with all 3 points. Athletic started brightly and hit the front through a great strike from Jamie. Park struck back before half time to leave it 1-1 at the break. Our boys were playing some decent football in patches in difficult conditions and found themselves 1-2 down early in the second half. However, they regrouped again, and Jamie drew us level shortly after through a great strike. With 15 mins to go we hit the front again when Jack Fleming cut the ball back to Alex who finished well to the park net. FT Athletic 3 - 2 Park. Thanks to park for an entertaining game in difficult conditions for both sides and to Tom the ref for officiating on the day.

U12 BOYS DIVISION 1: Ballyhar A 2-1 Killarney Athletic B. Jacob Slowakiewiz x 1. On a cold Saturday morning the boys headed out to Ballyhar, in tough conditions the boys played brilliant, going up One nil at half time, in the second half Ballyhar put on pressure, and they equalised from a great header and then got the winning goal 10 mins after. The Athletic pushed for and equaliser but it was not to be on this occasion. The boys played really well today a battled very hard. They can be very proud of their effort. Thanks to Ballyhar for hosting us they deserved their win. I’d also like to thank the referee.

U13 GIRLS PREMIER: Killorglin 2-2 Killarney Athletic. Leah Heinemann x 1, Laura O’Sullivan x 1. On a cold January

morning our U13 girls made the trip to Killorglin. Down a couple of big players, we weren’t helped when Evie had to come off after 5 mins. We started brightly and a great move saw Leah put us 1-0. We had a couple of good chances, but the half finished 1-0. Early in the second half, we won a corner and the ball fell to Laura who shot from the edge of the box to the top corner. 2-0. From this point on Killorglin started to dominate and made it 2-1 shortly after. Lori made a good save and Killorglin hit the post twice in the same move. The equaliser came with 7 minutes to go when their player ran through and slotted home. Athletic looked dangerous every time we attacked but the game finished 2-2 and a fair result in the end. Thanks to Killorglin for hosted a great game and the ref for officiating on the day.

U14 BOYS PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 2-1 Iveagh. Max Moynihan x 1, Marck Cremin x 1. Our first game of the New Year & it was a hard-fought win against a good Iveragh side. Our first goal came from a Patrick O’Connor wide free kick, Max Moynihan made a perfectly timed run as the Iveragh Goalkeeper advanced with both players colliding, Max's bravery paid off with ball ending up in the Iveragh goal. Iveragh reacted and got a deserved goal within minutes to level up the game. Second goal came from a corner when Marc Cremin found space just inside the penalty area, letting fly a with a shot that found the bottom corner. 2-1 half time. Second half both sides had chances to score but were unable to find the crucial next goal. We saw the game out to take the 3 points and remain unbeaten in the league. Thanks to Iveragh for a good, sporting game. Thanks to the ref for a good game.

Killarney Celtic

U16 PREMIER: Killorglin AFC 4-2 Killarney Celtic. Kiernan Kelly, James Murphy. Celtic took the lead after 20 mins when James Murphy finished to the net. Killorglin responded with 3 goals before Celtic came back with a Kiernan Kelly goal. As Celtic pressed for the equaliser Killorglin broke away to clinch the game.

U16 DIV 2: St Brendan's Park 1-3 Killarney Celtic. Andrew Sheahan 2, Luke O’Shea. Celtic had a good win in Tralee last weekend as the 16B team started 2025 on a bright note.

U14 DIV 2: Killarney Celtic 4-2 Mastergeeha. Jack Kissane 3, Josh O'Donoghue. Celtic B opened the scoring through Josh O'Donoghue before Mastergeeha rebounded to lead 2-1 at half time. Celtic equalised with a penalty. Jack Kissane doubled his tally with the lead goal. Mastergeeha pressed but Celtic held out and counter-attacked with Jack Kissane finishing off to leave Celtic winners on the day.
