Reversal on funding decision for Killarney bypass project

The N22 Farranfore to Killarney Project will get €750,000 in funding in what seems like a reversal of a previous decision by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

A total of €30,141,110 was allocated for improving and maintaining Kerry roads by the government last month, but the much needed road that bypasses Farranfore and Killarney and deliver an improved road between the two towns was not included in the funding.

This led to several politicians and councillors hitting out at the decision.

This week it was announced by Transport Infrastructure Ireland that €750,000 was made available to the new road scheme. Four potential routes have been identified and the funding will be put towards the final steps in identifying the final preferred corridor and eliminating the other three.

“I am delighted with this news as it is long overdue. I have long been calling for this funding as it will release the corridors not selected and we can proceed with the project which is badly needed to ease Killarney's traffic gridlock. The completion of this economic corridor will also benefit the entire county by showing traffic to move more freely throughout the county and is warmly welcomed,” said Killarney Municipal District councillor John O’Donoghue. The announcement will be

welcomed by local residents too – they have been left in limbo since the four options were announced in May 2021. So far that is all that has been done and locals were unable to sell or buy property or apply for planning permission for new builds or extensions.

Landowners in Spa, Lissivigeen, Tiernaboul and Coolcorcoran could be affected as well as Spa GAA club, depending on which of the four routes is ultimately chosen.

“I am very glad that finally funding has been announced of €750,000 for the N22 which will allow the preferred route for the Killarney by pass to be selected,” said TD Danny Healy Rae.

“I had raised this in the Transport committee with Peter Walsh of TII, where he said it was not on the programme at all this year and again in the Dáil with a Topical Question with Josepha Madigan. I am glad that following this the Government changed their mind on the funding for the N22.

My daughter Cllr Maura Healy Rae had also been constantly raising this with Kerry County Council.”

Kerry Education and Training Board has lodged its plans to re-develop the former Pretty Polly site with the Minister for Further and Higher Education.

In November 2022 the Killarney Advertiser revealed that Kerry ETB has ambitious plans to turn the long-term derelict site into a Centre of Excellence in Hospitality Training, a Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Green Technologies, and a Regional Centre of Excellence for Lifelong Learning.

When completed up to 4,000 students could attend the new campus.

This week, the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Simon Harris, confirmed that his department had received a detailed application from Kerry ETB through Eolas.

“I am delighted to say we have now received a proposal through SOLAS, to rejuvenate and regenerate the old Pretty Polly site and turn it into a state-of-theart further education college, specialising in hospitality and culinary training, which

The Pretty Polly site where the new state-of-the-art KETB educational campus will be located.

is obviously at the heart of the economy and society of Killarney. I will meet SOLAS next week regarding these proposals, which are all due to be assessed between now and September or October, with an update due then,” he said after local TD

and Fine Gael colleague Brendan Griffin asked if there was any progress on the project.

The project proposed involves overhauling an existing factory site and transforming it into a state-of-the-art campus.

Breast cancer survivor Jacqui Tangney gets behind Daffodil Day

Killarney breast cancer survivor Jacqui Tangney is calling on her local community to go all in against cancer for the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day, which takes place on March 22.

In 2014, 39-year-old Jacqui Tangney was performing a breast self-check when she discovered a lump.

Jacqui was diagnosed with breast cancer and given a treatment plan, including surgery and chemotherapy.

Unfortunately, however, Jacqui struggled with issues connected to her breast reconstruction, with 2023 being her first year since without requiring any surgery.

“The Irish Cancer Society were amazing during this time and offered me so much support and advice, particularly the Support Line nurses. I found reading other patient’s stories on their pages re-

ally helpful, they made me feel much less alone,” she said.

“Recovering from cancer takes time but once you have family, friends and a good team around to support you, it makes things that bit easier. Although it was a frightening and extremely hard journey, not only for me but for my daughters and family, I wouldn't change a thing. I have learnt that each day is a blessing.”

“I would encourage everyone to please get out there on Daffodil Day, March 22, and show your support for those affected by cancer in your local community.”

Macroom bypass leads to increased traffic in Killarney

Traffic volumes on the N22 have significantly increased since the opening of the Macroom bypass, a Killarney Municipal District Meeting has been told.

Cllr Niall Kelleher called for revised safety works along the N22 corridor.

“A revised assessment should be carried out on all junctions joining the N22 from the County Bounds to the speed limit at Pike Hill, as well as the traffic calming measure at Glenflesk Village,” he told Wednesday’s meeting.”

He also called for the provision of a roundabout at Coolcaslagh and that this should be done at the same time as the upgrading of the road from MD O'Shea

St Oliver’s School traffic plan subject to funding

A solution to the parking and traffic flow at St Oliver’s School during peak times will depend on funding, a Killarney Municipal District meeting has been told.

Cllr Martin Grady has been pushing for a traffic management plan at the school, especially at school drop-off and pick-up times.

In August last year St. Oliver's National School received planning approval for the construction of a new one-way vehicular set down area, revised pedestrian facilities and the relocation of parking facilities.

Grady raised the issue again at this week’s Killarney Municipal District Meeting.

In December 2023, the Killarney Municipal District Office, in conjunction with An

Garda Síochána, held a meeting regarding traffic management with the staff representing St. Oliver's National School. “On foot of that meeting, the Killarney Municipal District Office is currently undertaking, traffic counts and speed and traffic flow surveys. These surveys are ongoing and will advise of any improvements, if any, that can be made to improve the traffic management at this location,” a council official told the meeting.

“The office will continue to engage with the school. In regard to parking, a planning application, which contained proposals to provide for a carpark, bus and car set-down areas for the school, has received full planning approval. It is our understanding that these works will proceed once they receive funding.”

roundabout to Pike Hill.

“There has been an increase yearly since 2020 when the Covid-19 restrictions lead to a significant drop in traffic volumes. Safety improvements are being implemented incrementally at Glenflesk with the introduction of a speed limit, speed indicator signs and new positioned traffic calming advance signs,” a council official said.

Regarding the suggested Coolcaslagh roundabout the official said: The Killarney ofice has previously submitted this road for funding from the Specific Improvement Grant but on that occasion was unsuccessful. The Municipal District Office will again highlight this particular road with the Department of Transport.”

T OWN TALK

Six empty premises set for re-occupancy

Six empty business properties in the town centre are set to be reoccupied in coming weeks.

There was concern earlier this year that Killarney was losing its edge in the town centre.

Several well-known town centre business shut their doors so far this year. Different reasons were cited including the lack of town centre footfall, the difficulty in sourcing and keeping staff and the growing cos of energy and going business in general.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce members attended a members’ lunch gathering in the Great Southern Hotel earlier this week.

There, the 70 members were told by Joint Chamber Presidents, Pádraig Treacy and Johnny McGuire, that six new businesses are set to take over vacated premises soon.

“Three new leases have been signed and the three others are at an advanced stage of negotiations,” said a chamber

statement.

Another major economic boost for the town is the return to the tourism sector of Hotel Killarney, which had been used as an accommodation base for asylum seekers and refugees.

“The property, upgraded to four-star, has undergone a massive €9 million redevelopment and refurbishment and 190 new-look bedrooms will be open for tourism business this year,” added the statement.

New figures published in the GeoDirectory commercial buildings report, for the fourth quarter of 2023 shows 11.9% of Killarney’s commercial property is vacant, well below comparable figures in Tralee which show a 19.6% rate.

The vacancy rate in Kerry in the final quarter of last year was 12.4% which means Killarney is below the county average.

Outdoor dining spaces under review

Outdoor dining spaces in the town centre are being reviewed ahead of the busy tourist season.

At Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District Meeting, Cllr Martin Grady called for unused outdoor dining areas to returned to car parking spaces.

A council official replied that all 2023 licence holders have been invited to submit applications for this year as well as to additional applicants who : “ expressed

an interest in making an application in 2024.”

“The Killarney Municipal District Office is currently reviewing all outdoor dining areas in the context of 2024 [Section 254] applications, including those not currently in use, and also additionally in the context of the ongoing detailed design stage of the Killarney Town Urban Regeneration and Development Fund Town Centre and Street Upgrade Project.”

End of an era for retirees at St Brendan’s College

It really was the end of an era at St Brendan’s College last week when three long-serving members of staff retired from the school.

Marking the end of a remarkable career, school secretary Carmel Fitzgerald called time on her 42.5–year employment at the school.

“She was the longest serving member of staff in the school,” said principal Sean Coffey.

Another retiree, Geraldine Cunningham, was on the school’s admin staff for over

ten years.

Accountancy and business studies teacher Mike Leahy was the third member of the college’s staff to take his final exams.

Teaching and management staff celebrated the occasion with a special retirement dinner at the Randles Court Hotel last Friday.

‘MICHAEL COLLINSA Musical Drama’ wows INEC audience

Killarney Musical Society is celebrating after its three night run of ‘Michael Collins – A Musical Drama’ was well-received by the local audience.

The play, based on the late Bryan Flynn’s book, music and lyrics, can only be secured by two musical societies each year, adding to the uniqueness of the Killarney show.

Michael Collins - A Musical Drama is a moving, dynamic, resonant piece of musical theatre.

It is the dramatization of a changing period of Ireland's history. It brings to life The 1916 Rising, The War Of Independence and The Civil War.

“At the same time it is telling an intimate, human love story and how love and politics inflamed the period. This musical drama has war, heroism, love, villainy, tragedy and triumph all wrapped up. It has a distinctly Irish voice. Such numbers as ‘Fly the Flag of Freedom ‘ had the hairs standing on the backs of the audience's necks and ‘Every Heart Awaken‘ brought tears to their eyes,” said Killarney Musical Society’s PRO Linda O’Donoghue.

Vintage Vibes, Modern Style

Hazel's Nuts About Vintage

Hazel's Nuts About Vintage is undoubtedly one of Killarney’s hidden treasures. The small shop, just off Plunkett St., is a haven for anyone interested in vintage, sustainable fashion, and unique statement pieces.

The vibrant and quirky shopfront pulls you inside to a treasure trove of pre-loved finds. Vintage clothing, antique jewelry, shoes, vinyl records, and quirky prints fill every bit of space in the shop. Although not the biggest shop, you could spend all day burrowing through the stock.

Owned and run by Hazel O’Malley, a Killarney local, the shop is the latest in a long line of O’Malleys to trade out of 1 Bohereencael Glebe. As part of our shop local campaign, we caught up with Hazel this week for a chat.

THE O'MALLEY'S

On the back wall of Hazel’s shop is a beautiful collection of old photos displaying a visual depiction of the many small enterprises the O’Malley family has run from the laneway, going back generations.

“None of your readers would be old enough to remember the first business my great grandmother, Katherine O’Malley, had here; it was an eating house back in the early 1900s. There used to be weekly fairs up College Square back in

those days, so she was perfectly placed to keep the fair-goers well-fed,” Hazel explained.

Pointing down the laneway Hazel said, “My distant relatives also ran a cooperage across the way, and you will find many of the wooden casks and barrels produced there in many of the town's local pubs. I’d say we had one of Killarney’s first taxi services and car hire businesses in town too. You could say the entrepreneurial spirit runs in the family,” Hazel joked.

So the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree with Hazel, but it did take her a while to make the leap from the steady job and income to the trials and tribulations of a small business owner.

MAKING THE LEAP

“From a young age, I had always wanted to own my own shop, but after studying History and Celtic Civilization in college, I worked in Community Development for a while. What really pushed me to start selling vintage clothing was the Celtic Tiger bust. I could see that people were buying

without thinking, over-consuming, and without a thought given to how sustainable it all was. I was dipping in and out of selling at vintage markets in Galway for a number of years, and I could see that people were becoming more conscious about reusing, recycling, and upcycling, and so in 2016, I decided to set up shop here,” Hazel explained.

SUPPORTING SMALL SUPPLIERS

Hazel is a huge supporter of small jewellery suppliers, and many of the items she sells come directly from independent designers. Hazel’s friend Ann Rohan makes her own pieces and supplies the vintage shop with unique pieces. She also works with an award-winning Dublin jewellery designer, ‘A Little Idea,’ who provides a range of hand-cut items. Hazel also stocks a range of prints designed by a local tattoo artist.

There is a big community of vintage sellers across the country now, and they have created their own little ecosystem. Customers are willing to travel around the country just to visit the different vintage shops. While buying vintage used to be primarily popular for older people, Hazel said that is not the case anymore. “So many young people are conscious of

sustainable fashion now. Because we are very active on social media and also sell online, we have a nationwide customer base. We would get a lot of young people traveling from Cork, Limerick, and Dublin because they have seen us online, which is lovely to see,” Hazel said.

LOCAL MARKETS

Hazel has also been actively involved in running markets in Killarney down the years and would love to see Killarney adopt a more regular market scene: “I ran a market with my friend Ciara O'Connor out the back of The Laurels for a while, and it was bustling. We had lots of fantastic traders attending, and there was always a great atmosphere. Young musician Donal Lucey used to come down and play some music because he wasn’t old enough to play in the pubs at the time. There was just a lovely vibe around it, and it brought people into town. I started out selling at markets, and it is a great way for young people to test the waters selling their items. I would love to see a bit of thought put into something like this again,” Hazel said. The shop, which was named in Hot Press’s top 100 businesses last year, is currently stocking up for the upcoming festival season, where young people will flock to the shop looking to find the perfect vintage wear that they know nobody else will have.

“Everything we sell has a story; it’s not about the label but the unique character of the item. Sometimes our customers will tell us what they are looking for; if they can’t find it, we will try to source it. Other times we come across an item and immediately know a customer that would like it, so we will buy it in and put it away for them. That’s the way we operate, and it works well for us,” Hazel explained. If you are tired of the same old look or you are looking for a sustainable way to refresh your wardrobe, Hazel's Nuts About Vintage is a must visit!

Recently awarded the position of Regional Staff Officer AND Regulatory Compliance & Standards, together with the huge responsibility of Assistant Regional Director of the Southern Region of the Order of Malta Ireland, Ambulance Corps, I decided to catch up with Anne Nagle, who said it is 'truly a privilege to be entrusted with this responsibility'.

A sure enough reason to visit Brendan's Place for a chat over a cup of tea with Anne, but on this visit, my ears were perked to hear all about Sam Browne!

So tell me about Sam Browne?

“Amongst many items of my Order of Malta uniform, my Sam Browne belt, which is over 80 years old, will make this St Patrick's Day Parade a very special one for me.

"It was worn by the late Joseph Looney, who passed away on March, 16 2022, a friend, colleague and long-standing member of the Order of Malta, Killarney. It was a huge honour to me, that me and my colleagues, Noel Lucey, Donal McCarthy and Mikey Fleming, were asked by Joseph, who was ill, to 'bring him home' from CUH. It was his wish to be escorted back to Killarney in our newest ambulance. The journey was short-lived as together we conversed with laughter and reminisced on the great times we shared as a team. Noreen had the tea and cake ready for us all and the chats continued with Joseph who had recently had two brand new Sam Browne belts made for himself and Noel Lucey. Such belts were not permitted to be worn by ladies, that is until the new uniform was introduced in recent years. The Sam Browne belt is a leather belt with a supporting strap that passes over the right shoulder, worn by military and police officers. I had negotiated being fitted for the new uniform for a while but the journey to Dublin was always on the long finger. To my great honour, Joseph handed me his older belt before leaving. 'I am entrusting you with

Anne Nagle – a legend of the Order of Malta

this belt. Will you please ensure you get the uniform to go with it?' ”

“Before Joseph, the belt had belonged to the father of John Tarrant of the Kerry Gems and also to Sean O'Keeffe, father of the Fáilte Hotel's Valerie. There is a memorial trophy in his honour each year at the St Patrick's Day Parade, the Sean O'Keeffe Memorial Perpetual Trophy."

So did you say yes to the dress and make the trip to Dublin Anne?

“I was fitted in Dublin recently and picked up my brand new uniform in Carrigaline as deliveries of other uniforms were being transported to the navy military base in Haulbowline Island, Co. Cork.

St Patrick's Day Parade in Killarney will be such a very special day for me. There is so much history and sentiment in my uniform. I have been a member of the

Order of Malta now for 45 years. I began as a volunteer and was commissioned in Killarney in 1983, where my mother, Hannah Bartlett, gifted me a pair of leather gloves which she could ill afford at the time.

I wear them with pride. For years she had a photo framed beside her bed taken on that day. It was only recently I decided I wanted to change the frame.

When I removed the back of the frame I saw her handwriting that read 'Anne I was so proud of you when you received your stripes. Love Always Mam'.

For many years, the uniform included a black tie which I borrowed consistently from my neighbour Con Keeffe (RIP) who worked in the Gleneagle Hotel. He soon stopped asking for it back, so this is another part of my uniform with great

sentiment,” Anne added.

What will your new position with the Order of Malta entail?

“The main role is compliance and to staff events in the southern region with over 14 units of volunteers. The main duties would be concerts such as Bruce Springsteen in Kilkenny, events at Pairc Uí Caoimh and our own Fitzgerald Stadium. I coordinate medical plans, rosters of volunteers at different levels and radio personnel. There are many meetings and plans to be passed ever before the events. For example, the Ploughing Championship will require 10 days prior, three days of the event and four days after. The field has to be completely empty before our work is complete. The best days at work are those where no one needs to be treated! You will never know we are there but when we are needed, then we are vital” Anne explained. Your dedication is truly honourable Anne. Where does your passion and drive over the last 45 years with the Order of Malta come from?

"It's a privilege to be part of such a wonderful organisation. Our thousands of members volunteer their time on a weekly basis to provide the highest standard of first-aid medical services at national and local events, training in life-saving skills and delivering community care initiatives, which is hugely rewarding for me. My hope is that my Sam Browne belt will be around for another 80 years. I haven't found 'my person' as of yet but it will be someone who will understand its sentiment, respectful of its history and of the people that have worn it over the last eight decades.

For this and many reasons, it will mean the world to me to wear Joseph's belt together with my new uniform at this year's St Patrick's Day in Killarney."

‘The Gobnaits’ return for special Lá Fhéile Pádraig film

After a break from public life, the ‘Muckross Gobnaits’ have returned, regrouped with new members and more outrageous ‘notions’ .

They’re on a mission to re-connect with some fascinating folklore and traditions which form the theme of this year’s St. Patrick’s Festival Parade - ‘Echoes of Killarney’ .

Background to this year’s chosen Gobnaits:

Fiona Carroll as ‘Agnes Mary Doody’works on the family farm in Muckross, feels a bit hard done by, keeping the family farm going. Their only brother, John J. Doody, ‘went off’ to the States. Her sister, Theresa Mary, ‘went off to do Teacher training’, and her older sister, Elizabeth Mary, (a former nun) now works in the local hotel.

Stella Moloney as ‘Theresa Mary Doody’ - went to Mary Immaculate College to become a national school teacher. She thinks she’s great! and teaches in Muckross School House.

Emer Corridan as ‘Elizabeth Mary Doody’ - a former nun, it was big news in the parish when she left!!! Being the eldest, she is very serious and manages the Caher-

nane Hotel - which is very posh.

THE PLOT

Both Agnes Mary and Theresa Mary, are home in the farmstead before the parade, discussing the stories about their great grandfather, Mike Doody, who worked for the Herberts of Muckross. He was selected to row the Queens Barge, hunting for the Royal Stag, on the Lakes of Killarney for Queen Victoria’s visit in 1861. Agnes Mary interrupts by telling Theresa Mary, that it was ‘Tangney’ who left the stag go, and ‘Lyne’ took the blame! Theresa Mary continues the story

‘They say the bugler sounded handsome on the lake that day. In fact the sounds could be heard echoing through the valleys and mountains of Killarney. Later they’re enjoying tea in the Cahernane Hotel. They spot a beautiful piece of Arbutus furniture made locally near Tomies Mountain, and while sleeping of the ‘tay’, Elizabeth Mary, arrives in and throws the sisters out!

PAINT LIKE A PRO: How to Revive Your Decking

Given our climate in Ireland, decking requires regular maintenance. We get a lot of questions at Pat McDonnell Paints this time of year about how to breathe new life into old decking. If you have decided it is time to spruce up your deck, check out our handy step-bystep guide below

STEP 1: PREPARATION

As with any paint job, you need to get the surface as clean as possible. You can use a multi-purpose solution like FARBEX Exterior Fungicidal Wash to remove any mould, moss, and algae. To do this – apply the wash to the entire area with a decking brush, making sure to scrub between the boards, leave for 15 minutes and hose off. Tip: Don’t use bleach cleaner as this can whiten and damage your decking boards. Leave the decking to dry for at least two days. While the decking may seem dry the day after, you risk sealing in any remaining moisture which can lead to cracking and splitting. If required, sand off any loose or flaking

areas. Run a cloth soaked in white spirits over the decking boards to remove any sanding dust.

STEP 2: CHOOSE THE CORRECT PRODUCT

Typically, your decking will have already been coated with Decking Oil, Decking Stain, or a Solid Decking Colour. The most straightforward option is to re-coat your deck with a similar product to what was used previously. If you want to change product completely, it’s best to speak with a member of our team who can advise you on the best options for your deck.

Sikkens HLS is my go-to product if you are looking for a stain or a solid colour.

TIP: Before starting, check the forecast

as you will need a few of days of dry weather to complete your project. Avoid very hot weather as this may cause the product to dry too quickly and not fully absorb into the wood.

STEP 3: TIME TO PAINT/STAIN /OIL YOUR DECKING!

Using a good quality paint brush (approx. 3 - 4” in width), apply the decking oil along the decking boards – always with the grain.

Tip: For an even finish, start at the furthest end of the deck and go in an S-shape, painting one or two boards at a time.

We recommend giving your decking two coats in March / April. After your final coat, if the gods allow it, leave at least 24 hours of good weather before you use it. At the end of September, give your decking a third coat to protect it from the winter weather.

"Late Late Toy Show" star passes away

Saoírse Ruane, the young girl who captured the hearts of Ireland with her appearance on the "Late Late Toy Show" in 2020, has passed away at the age of 12. She had been battling cancer since she was diagnosed at the age of seven.

Just 2,200 steps daily can contribute to a lower risk of early death

Good news for those who struggle to hit the magic 10,000 steps a day! A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that every additional step you take beyond 2,200 steps daily can contribute to a lower risk of early death and heart disease.

Researchers followed participants for nearly seven years, tracking their daily steps and monitoring their health outcomes. The findings revealed that people who walked between 9,000 and 10,500 steps daily had the lowest risk of early death. However, even those who only managed slightly above 2,200 steps showed a benefit compared to those who were more sedentary.

The study found a direct correlation between daily steps and reduced risk of early death and heart disease and that taking at least 2,200 steps a day provided a measurable benefit compared to a more sedentary lifestyle. The study found that even reaching 4,000 to 4,500 steps a day offered a substantial portion of the overall benefit while those averaging 9,000 to 10,500 steps daily saw the most significant risk reduction (39% for early death and 21% for heart attack/ stroke).

A man in his 70s was arrested following an incident during an unofficial Gaelic games referees meeting in a north Dublin hotel on Tuesday night.

Gardaí confirmed they were called to a commercial premises in Malahide following a report of a disturbance.

A man in his 70s was arrested following an incident during referees meeting in a Dublin hotel on Tuesday night, where

a firearm is alleged to have been brandished. It is believed the incident happened during a meeting of the Gaelic Referees and Officials Association at which a firearm is alleged to have been brandished.

Bringing back the woolly mammoth

The icy plains of the past might soon echo with the stomps of a familiar giant. Scientists are making significant strides in the field of de-extinction, with the woolly mammoth emerging as a frontrunner.

Recent advancements in gene editing technology and the increasing availability of ancient mammoth DNA are fueling optimism for the possibility of bringing this iconic creature back from extinction.

The project, led by Colossal Biosciences, a company dedicated to de-extinc-

tion efforts, aims to create a hybrid elephant embryo containing genes from a woolly mammoth. This embryo would then be gestated in an elephant surrogate mother, potentially resulting in the birth of an animal with mammoth-like features adapted for the modern world. While the technology is still in its early stages and significant hurdles remain scientists have successfully sequenced the complete woolly mammoth genome, providing a blueprint for their genetic makeup. The closely related Asian elephants serve as the surrogate mothers in this endeavor, offering a viable option for gestation.

Thousands escape Haiti prison

Port-au-Prince, Haiti - Haiti is facing a significant security challenge after a mass escape from the country's main penitentiary last Saturday night.

Local organisations report that heavily armed gangs stormed the prison, allowing an estimated 3,696 inmates to flee, representing 97% of the prisons population.

Haitian gang leader and former police officer Jimmy "Barbecue" Cherizier warned of “civil war” earlier in the week if Prime Minister Ariel Henry does not step down. Anger at the shocking levels of violence have led to several demonstrations

against the government, with protesters demanding the resignation of the prime minister.

Under a political deal, Prime Minister Ariel Henry was due to stand down by February 7, but planned elections were not held and he has remained in power since “If Ariel Henry doesn’t resign, if the international community continues to support him, we’ll be heading straight for a civil war that will lead to genocide,” Cherizier said.

Cherizier's gang has tried several times to seize Port-au-Prince's major airport to stop Henry from returning from abroad. It has also attacked prisons, police stations, ministers and other strategic targets.

Woman takes unexpected ride on shop shutters in Wales

An incident in Wales has gone viral this week, capturing the moment a woman gets unexpectedly hoisted into the air by a shop's security shutters.

Committee recommends assisted dying legislation

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Assisted Dying, established in 2023, has concluded its work and will recommend the introduction of legislation for both assisted suicide and euthanasia in Ireland. This marks a significant development in a long-standing and complex debate in the country.

The committee spent nine months considering submissions from various stakeholders, including medical professionals, religious groups, patient advocacy organisations, and the general public. They also studied experiences from other countries with existing assisted

dying legislation.

The committee's report, due to be published shortly, is expected to outline specific recommendations for legal frameworks governing both assisted suicide and euthanasia. These frameworks will likely address eligibility criteria, safeguard and healthcare professional involvement:

The committee's recommendation is a significant step, but the path to legislation remains uncertain with the public holding diverse views on this complex issue. Any final decision on whether to enact such legislation will lie with the Oireachtas, the Irish Parliament.

The woman, identified as 71-year-old Anne Hughes, was waiting outside a shop in Tonteg, Pontypridd, on the morning of March 4. As the shutters began to rise, her coat became caught in the mechanism, lifting her sideway and several feet off the ground.

The CCTV footage shows the surprised look on Ms. Hughes' face as she realises

her predicament. Thankfully, the shop manager reacted quickly, rushing inside to reverse the shutters and bring her safely back down.

Despite the initial shock, the incident has become a source of amusement online. The store itself shared the video on social media, adding the lighthearted caption: "The only thing going up in this shop is our staff, not the prices!"

Ms. Hughes, a regular customer at the store, took the incident in good humor.

"It was a bit of a shock at first, but I'm glad everyone found it funny," she said. "It's certainly something I won't forget!"

Beaufort Film Night returns with Irish comedy

Beaufort Film Night returns on March 15 in a new venue – Kilgobnet National School, Beaufort.

Beaufort Film Night is a non-profit community organisation founded by local film enthusiasts whose aim is to screen cultural English language and international language films, fostering an interest in and appreciation of these category of films, films that normally don’t get a general release screening in Kerry. Beaufort Film Night will screen the funny, charming and moving Irish-language film ‘Róise and Frank,’ at 8.30pm on the night.

It’s a rare film for all age groups (PG Cert), and is a must-see for dog lovers everywhere! The screening will coincide with Seachtain na Gaeilge and the film will have English subtitles.

From directors Rachael Moriarty and Peter Murphy, ‘Róise and Frank’ is set in the picturesque Ring peninsula in County Waterford.

Róise (Bríd Ní Neachtain), still in mourning following the death of her husband, Frank, is initially annoyed when a stray dog keeps mysteriously showing up at her door. But a series of eerie coincidences soon has Róise convinced that the dog is Frank, reincarnated.

‘Frank Madra’ soon proves a much-needed companion for both Róise and shy, hurling-loving local boy Maidhchi (Ru-

adhán de Faoite). But as the stray dog wins over the town, Róise’s neighbour Donncha (Lorcan Cranitch) is not so convinced…

Róise & Frank is a delightful Irish-language film for the whole family: a comedy-drama that will draw out smiles, tears and plenty of laughs from audiences. It has proven a hit at several recent festivals at home and abroad, including winning the critics’ award for Best Ensemble at the Dublin International Film Festival 2022.

The admission price is €7. As the film is rated PG, all ages are welcome but children under 16 years of age will need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

A reduced admission price of €4 will apply to patrons under 16. The admission fee will go towards covering the motion picture licence fee.

Films screened at Beaufort Film Night are carefully curated in order to appeal to a general audience. Beaufort Film Night is supported by Kerry County Council Arts Office and is working with Access Cinema, the Arts Council funded organisation which assists film clubs and film nights in Ireland with their screenings.

Teresa RANDLES is a former Head of Human Resources and now works as a Career Coach and Career Planning Strategist.

Why work experience is so important

At the beginning of 2023 I worked with a UK law student (2nd year) who had the opportunity, via his University, to apply for a Summer Vacation Placement with a Top 50 UK Law firm.

There were 10 places on the Scheme and the placement was for 2 weeks. It was an incredible opportunity. We did a lot of work together as the application process was robust - an application form, an on-line team-based exercise and finally an in-person interview. The student was successful and spent 2 weeks at the firm in Summer 2023. The 2-week placement involved research, drafting, a short legal based project and both a personal and teambased presentation. The student spent time in each Department and was appointed a mentor for the 2 weeks – the mentor stayed in touch with him for the following 12 months. I spoke to him at the end of the placement and his feedback was that he was 100% committed to a career in law, he had seen first-hand how the law was applied and he had some sense of what it was like to work in an office. Graduate vacation schemes/summer placements/work experience placements whatever they are called are invaluable. So why should you apply?

• They give first-hand experience of what the ‘real life’ profession is like

• There are opportunities to see how academic knowledge is applied in reality

• Gain some valuable insights, experience and knowledge of what working in that profession might be like

• Experience a firm’s culture and values

• Experience of working in an office environment, understanding how they work and function – the positives and the negatives

• Experience different management styles and approaches

• An opportunity to build professional relationships

• It’s an excellent opportunity to begin developing your professional network of contacts

• It will be on your CV and may set you apart from other candidates who do not have the same experience

• It may lead to further opportunities

So there are lots of reasons why you should apply for that work experience placement!

I have designed and run Graduate Summer Vacation Schemes in the past. If you are a student who would like to chat through an application, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 085 169 3541 or teresa@meetyourcareercoach.com

Kenmare hotel installs 50 EV charging points

Management at the Kenmare Bay Hotel deserve high praise for their initiative of installing 50 state of the art Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations at its hotel, according to Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill.

The hotel recently announced that it had installed 50 electric vehicle (EV) charging points.

“It is people like this who are the real drivers of our economy,” said the Rossbeigh based Councillor.

“I recently proposed that the Government provide supporting funding for

Hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses to install such infrastructure and I am delighted to see the Kenmare Bay Hotel is leading the race towards environmental sustainability in accommodation.”

“If EV's are the way forward, we must provide the infrastructure to power them. If our Tourism Industry is to continue to attract visitors to places like the Ring of Kerry, more EV charging stations must be installed pronto. I commend this great initiative on the part of the Kenmare Bay Hotel management, which will be an enormous boon to all of Kenmare and its surrounding area.”

Glorious hat-trick of awards for coffee cup scheme

The champagne has been placed on ice as it’s the coffee and tea drinkers in Killarney that have cause to celebrate following a stunning hat-trick of victories.

Less than a year after it was initiated, the ground-breaking Killarney Coffee Cup project has scooped three national awards in recognition of its remarkable achievement of preventing over 506,000 single-use cups from going to landfill or being discarded in the national park.

First up on the honours list was the Best Environmental/Ecological Category prize at the Local Authority Members’ Association (LAMA) All-Ireland Community and Council Awards.

The awards celebrate communities and councils working together, highlighting the great work done and recognising the phenomenal contribution made.

This was closely followed when Outsider Magazine selected the coffee cup project for the Eco Hero accolade while the Killarney initiative also won a major prize at the Bord na Mona sponsored Irish Green Awards.

The Eco Hero citation acknowledged that, previously, the town went through about 23,000 single-use cups a week –more than a million a year – adding up

to 18.5 tonnes of waste but now other Irish towns want to follow in Killarney’s footsteps.

In the Green Awards, the Killarney project scooped the Green Transformation Award and, in doing so, overcame stiff challenges from big players of the calibre of Aldi Ireland, Boston Scientific, Coca Cola and DPD Ireland.

The latter award was presented by Environment Minister Eamon Ryan, at a black tie gala in the Clayton Burlington Hotel in Dublin.

The three victories were brought about as a result of the magnificent community effort by the businesses and people of Killarney and visitors who support the campaign to end single-use coffee cup

use in the town.

There are now well in excess of 50 hospitality businesses signed up to and fully supportive of the coffee cup project and the local primary and secondary schools are also involved in sustainability projects spearheaded by the coffee cup project team.

In the summer of 2023, Killarney became the first town in Ireland, and one of only a handful worldwide, to ban the use of single use coffee cups and it is estimated that the prevention of over half a million cups in the period from July to December last year saved over 870,000 litres of water and 279 trees.

Louise Byrne, Sustainability Manager with the Killarney Park and The Ross Hotels, thanked everybody in Killarney for playing their part and for helping to put the town on the map as a national leader in sustainability practice.

Firies Parents Association night creates “lasting memories”

The Marian Hall in Firies was packed to the rafters as Firies National School Parents Association hosted a bingo extravaganza last week.

“The event was a testament to the tireless efforts of the Parents Association. Their hard work paid off. The funds will undoubtedly benefit the students of Firies National School, enhancing their educational experiences and creating lasting memories,” said teacher Eva Spillane.

Children from junior infants to third class, were treated to a cinema night within the cosy confines of the school.

“As the lights dimmed, their eyes widened in anticipation of watching the film. Treats and drinks flowed, and laughter echoed through the corridors” added Eva.

“And so, as curtains fell on this remarkable evening, Firies National School extend their heartfelt thanks to all who contributed, attended, and made the night such a resounding success.”

Celebrating the triple win are: Louise Byrne (Sustainability Manager Killarney Park Hotel), Elma Hegarty and Karena McCarthy (Killarney Credit Union), Marcus Treacy, (Killarney Park Hotel), Matt Farrell (Killarney Municipal District), Paul O'Neill (Killarney Plaza Hotel), Patrick O'Donoghue, (Gleneagle Group), Jason Clifford, (Dunloe Hotel), Michael Jacobi (Great Southern Killarney), Neil Grant (Brehon Hotel), Johnny McGuire (Joint President Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce). Working Family Payment

What is the Working Family Payment?

Working Family Payment (WFP) is a weekly tax-free payment for employees with children. It supports people who are on low pay. WFP used to be called Family Income Supplement (FIS). You must be an employee to get WFP. You cannot get it if you are self-employed only. To get WFP, your average weekly family income must be under a certain amount for your family size. The WFP payment you get is 60% of the difference between your average weekly family income and the WFP income limit for your family size. WFP is not taxed and it is not taken into account in the means test for a medical card.

Who is eligible to receive the Working Family Payment (WFP)?

WFP is a tax-free weekly payment for employees who meet the following conditions:

• Work 38 or more hours per fortnight (in any combination of hours). You can combine your weekly hours with your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant’s hours to meet this condition. You cannot use time spent in self-employment (or on Community Employment, Tús, JobBridge or the Rural Social Scheme) to meet this condition.

• Your job is likely to last at least 3 months.

• You have at least one child who normally lives with you.

• You earn less than the WFP income limit set for your family size.

• You must be employed, pay tax and PRSI in Ireland. Under EU regulations you may be able to claim WFP if your children are living abroad and are de-

pendent on you.

WFP is paid for one year (52 weeks) as long as you meet the conditions. It does not change if your earnings from work go up or down during that year. After 52 weeks, you can apply again for WFP.

What happens if my hours at work are reduced or I lose my job?

If the number of hours you work each week falls to under 38 hours a fortnight, you are no longer entitled to WFP. You should tell the WFP section of the Department of Social Protection (DSP) if this happens. If you lose your job, you are no longer entitled to WFP. You must tell the WFP section of the DSP.

If you move to a new job, your current entitlement to WFP will end and you must tell the WFP section of the DSP. You can apply again for WFP for your new job.

What happens to my WFP if I am on maternity leave?

When you are on maternity leave, adoptive leave, paternity leave or parent’s leave, you are entitled to be treated in the same way as when you are at work. This means that you can claim WFP if you meet the conditions of the WFP and already have a child. A pregnant woman who has no other children does not qualify for WFP until the birth of the baby.

You cannot continue to claim WFP if you take additional unpaid maternity leave or adoptive leave, or if you lose your job after returning to work, or if you give up your job.

You can continue to get your WFP with your Adoptive Benefit, Maternity Benefit, Paternity Benefit and Parent’s Benefit as long as you meet the qualifying criteria for both.

How is my rate of Working Family Payment assessed?

The DSP will assess your household income in a means test. It compares your total income to the WFP income limit for your family size. If you earn less than the WFP income limit, you may get WFP.

The combined income of a couple is taken into account when calculating assessable income. Because WFP is paid over 52 weeks, the DSP tries to calculate your average earnings over a similar period of time. Normally they will use your earnings up to the date of your application. If you are newly in employment, your average weekly income is calculated from when you started work with that employer. If your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant is self-employed, their income over the 12-month period before you apply is used to work out their average weekly income.

The WFP income test does not assess capital. This includes property you own, bank accounts and cars. However, rental income from the letting of property or land is assessed and you cannot deduct mortgage payments or other expenses. You can get up to €14,000 per year for renting out a room in your own home without it affecting your Working Family Payment. Drop-in to your local Citizens Information Centre and they will assist you to work out the means assessment and to see if you meet the eligibility criteria What are the Working Family Payment income limits from 4 January 2024?

Family Size Your weekly family income is less than:

One Child €645

Two Children €746

Three Children €847

Four Children €938

Five Children €1,064

Six Children €1,180

Seven Children €1,316

Eight or more children €1,412

Your WFP will be 60% of the difference between the WFP income limit for your family size and your assessable income If you qualify for WFP, you get a minimum of €20 each week.

If you are getting WFP, you may also be entitled to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance.

How to apply for the Working Family Payment

To apply, fill in an application form for Working Family Payment. You can get a copy of this form in your local Social Welfare Office or Citizens Information Centre. To make sure that your application for WFP is processed as quickly as possible, you should send your most recent payslips with your application form. You can also apply for it online at MyWelfare.ie if you have a MyGovID verified account.

Paul’s on brink of achieving Super League dream

St Paul’s Killarney will earn a place in next season’s Super League if they can round off their outstanding season with victory in the Division 1 Playoff Final in Dublin on Saturday.

Paul’s have been nothing short of magnificent throughout the 2023/24 campaign. They won 15 out of 16 league games to finish top of the Southern Conference, and then they emphatically beat Templeogue in last weekend’s Division 1 semi-final in Killarney. Rheanne O’Shea gave an MVP performance at the Pres Gym as she, Sofia Paska and Khiarica Rashid all chipped in with 16 points apiece in a 75-58 win.

“It was a great performance and we’re delighted with the win,” St Paul’s head coach James Fleming said. “Our defence

was excellent. We’ve worked hard over the last few weeks on it and the girls really implemented our game-plan against a very tough and well-drilled Templeogue.”

Standing in their way in the final are Swords Thunder, a formidable outfit who topped the Northern Conference thanks in no small part to the excellent contributions of Jasmine Walker and Jensen Caretti. Swords booked their spot in Saturday’s crunch decider by way of an impressive 68-57 triumph over the Limerick Celtics so both teams will

be rocking up to the National Basketball Arena in confident form.

Coach Fleming will be hoping that his squad can draw on the disappointment of last year’s final for added motivation. Paul’s came up agonisingly short against the Portlaoise Panthers 12 months ago. On Saturday they have the opportunity set the record straight and secure Super League basketball for the town of Killarney. If they perform as well as they have done all year, they will give themselves every chance of achieving their long-held dream.

SAINTS: Sofia Paska, Rheanne O'Shea and James Fleming are hoping lead St Paul's to the Promised Land of elite level basketball.

Morale booster for Kerry over old rivals Tyrone

As expected, Kerry were comfortable winners over Tyrone in The Park on Sunday last, much more comfortable than the four-point scoreline of 0-18 to 1-11 indicates.

One exaggerates to say they bounced back after that demoralising loss to Dublin at Croker the previous week; it was more like an exercise in recuperation. The team needed this morale booster, especially versus Tyrone who have had the Indian sign over Kerry on too many occasions, especially in the latter stages of the championship.

I doubt if anyone who knows anything about football ever questioned the ability of David Clifford, Footballer of the Year in 2022 and 2023, to recover his true form after his unsatisfactory display against Eoin Murchan. To err is human; to forgive is divine.

He had eight shots at the posts on Sunday last and he nailed every one of them. No wides. Most were from frees and for

me, the best of all were the two from 44 metres out early in the second half. Tyrone shot so many wides into the Dalton’s Avenue End against that very stiff breeze. Not so David Clifford. He drilled them perfectly thereby nailing down the coffin on Tyrone.

There was a brief Tyrone flurry when Ciarán Daly manufactured a goal in the 64th minute, but the outcome was never in doubt.

Captain Paudie Clifford’s first touches were well off, uncharacteristically fumbling the ball on occasion, but he still kicked three very valuable points. It was great to see Diarmuid O’Connor up his game at midfield to become the TG4 Laoch na hImeartha.

My Man of the Match was Gavin White.

It was wonderful to see him in full flight, scything upfield through the Tyrone central spine and passing to better-placed sharpshooters to score. Let’s hope that manager Jack O’Connor will not stifle his forward runs. Also, I feel that such runs should deliver a goal per game and White needs to have the confidence to pull the

trigger for the green flag. If the momentum is with him he should strike for goal. All through last year’s campaign, I advocated Kerry playing a Twin Towers full forward line of Clifford and Seán O’Shea close to the goal. Both have great physiques, skill and are proven score-getters. Keep them inside, two on two with their markers. Get the ball in quickly to them and the scoring dividends will come, particularly as both are great at claiming marks. With either of them, the ensuing point is guaranteed.

Then Dara Moynihan and Paudie Clifford can graft outside, popping up here, there and everywhere and supplying the ball to the inside duo. O’Shea was at number 14 on Sunday last but he spent too much of his energies back in his own defensive 45. He hasn’t the legs for that tracking back and there is no danger of a score when he plays that deeply.

I would have liked to have seen the promising Cillian Burke operating against Tyrone but he suffered a hamstring injury in training and that killed his chances of appearing. Brian Ó Beaglaoich has still

not recovered fully from the dreaded ‘hammer’ injury.

It does not surprise me that so many intercounty players are injured more often and for longer periods now because training load is too demanding, and what’s more the intercounty scene is too condensed.

Eighteen months ago, Mike Breen looked so promising and seemed to be a shoo-in, probably in the half-back line. Unfortunately for the Mid Kerry man, he has spent so much time rehabbing injuries.

Just two league games left for Kerry now: away to Roscommon and at home to Galway in the Fitzgerald Stadium on March 24. I expect Kerry to win both fixtures. It looks like a Derry v Dublin league final and it may well be a blessing in disguise for Kerry not to reach the decider. Jack has opted for the warmer climate of Portugal for a pre-All-Ireland series camp the week of the Division 1 final. Will those preparations be enough to deliver Sam?

Kerry superstars visit Reidy’s to talk football

One of the most popular GAA podcasts in the country came to Killarney last weekend for a special interview with Kerry superstars David and Paudie Clifford.

Presented by Meath journalist Tommy Rooney alongside former Kerry player James O’Donoghue and former Dublin player Paddy Andrews, The Football Pod by Off The Ball is usually recorded remotely but the lads were in Reidy’s for this one-off episode featuring Fossa’s famous footballing brothers.

The Cliffords were on hand to help launch the Killarney Club 7s, which takes place over the June Bank Holiday weekend at Spa GAA.

The Killarney Advertiser was granted exclusive backstage access to the podcast and speaking to this journalist afterwards, Tommy outlined why Off The Ball jumped at the opportunity to come down and meet with David and Paudie.

“We were delighted to get the opportunity to chat to the two lads,” he said. “We love the podcast that we have, catching up every Monday, but when we look back at the end of every year, the highlights are the roadshows that we do and oppor-

tunities like this: speaking to some of the most talented players in the game. “David and Paudie were great with their time and we were so excited to get the chance to talk to them. I hope people enjoy the podcast. It’s a really laid-back chat.”

Kerry and Killarney Legion hero O’Donoghue has successfully made the transition from player to pundit since stepping away from the intercounty scene in 2022. Tommy is full of praise for his colleague and his unique take on analysis. “He’s so natural at it. Some people can analyse the game but they can’t verbalise

it. James has the knowledge but he also has the ability to get it across in a way that’s really understandable. He brought a freshness to The Football Pod.

“I would consider Paddy and James as two people who are still very close to the game right now, but they’re able to separate themselves from it as well which is really good.”

In the relaxed setting of the Cobble Snug at Reidy’s, the Cliffords spoke to Tommy, James and Paddy about the town of Killarney, the Club 7s, and their contrasting paths to intercounty stardom.

The Football Pod featuring David and Paudie Clifford will be released on YouTube on Monday at 12 noon. The audio version will be available wherever you get your podcasts.

Fellow Kerry star Dara Moynihan was also in attendance for an interview with The Kerry Football Podcast, which will be released today (Friday) on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Moynihan is taking nothing for granted

After experiencing a stop-start intercounty career since making his debut in 2019, Dara Moynihan might be slowly but surely cementing his place in Kerry’s starting line-up.

The hard-working half forward started all eight of The Kingdom’s championship matches in 2023 and this year he has been selected for all five league matches to date, perhaps giving his best performance in last weekend’s victory over Tyrone in Killarney.

Going by those stats, he certainly appears to have established himself in manager Jack O’Connor’s best 15. But, speaking exclusively to this journalist on The Kerry Football Podcast, Moynihan indicated that he has no intention of taking his eye off the ball.

“I wouldn’t be going in with that attitude,” the 26-year-old says. “You can’t go in thinking that [you’re established]. “You have to go in with the attitude that you have to perform in every single training session because there’s a serious squad there. You need to be at the top of your game to keep your place. If your form dips, there’s a fella there to take your jersey.”

Competition for places is certainly fierce. Moynihan admits that as a starter you can feel other panelists breathing over your shoulder - and he firmly believes that’s a good thing.

“That’s what makes it enjoyable. That’s what improves the squad. If a player gets too comfortable, they’re obviously not going to perform. They need fellas chomping at the bit who are looking to take your jersey from you. It’s not like you’re fighting or anything like that. You just leave it on the [training] pitch and you’re the best of friends when you come off it.”

Moynihan counts himself fortunate to have several close friends on the panel, not least the Clifford brothers who he has known since childhood. Having

that support network in place has been a great help to the Spa man, especially when times get tough.

“I would have known David and Paudie before [we played for] Kerry. I’d also be very friendly with Seánie O’Shea and Graham O’Sullivan from the Kerry minors. We were together the whole time, through the U20s and stuff like that. It does help, knowing that you have friends there. Through defeats we’d always try to stick together. I think we’ve come closer together over the last couple of years.

“Tony Griffin (performance coach) coming in has helped with that as well. There’s a serious bond there at the moment. We’ve worked on it since he came in and I’m sure if you asked any of the other players [they’d say the same]. We’re all around the same age now as well. Over the years there could have been big age gaps.

“But that bond just comes from being together for the last five or six years anyway, you get closer to fellas naturally.” Moynihan was speaking to The Kerry Football Podcast as part of the launch of the Killarney Club 7s, an annual Gaelic football tournament hosted by Spa GAA Club. The event takes place over the June Bank Holiday weekend.

“The last few years have been class,” Moynihan enthused. “To be fair to Shane Cronin, Evan Cronin, Andrew Garnett, Mike O’Donoghue and everyone involved, they’ve put in serious effort. It’s a great day out for everyone and it’s a great fundraiser for the club as well.”

Moynihan discussed a wide range of topics during his appearance on The Kerry Football Podcast, including his glory days with St Brendan’s, getting injured just days before the 2022 All-Ireland final, and Kerry’s prospects for the rest of the season.

Kerry FC raise €39k for Fitzgerald family

Kerry Football Club presented the Fitzgerald family from Tralee with a cheque for over €39,000 before their game against Treaty United last Friday night at Mounthawk Park.

The club ran a very successful charity match on February 2 which saw a Kerry Soccer Legends team take on Kerry GAA Legends team in Tralee. The fundraiser was in aid of four-year-old Alex Fitzgerald who is currently receiving treatment in Crumlin Children’s Hospital for childhood cancer.

The total amount raised by the club was €39,268.34. There was a large crowd on the night and through ticket sales, a bucket collection and a very successful GoFundMe campaign, the club was able to raise a substantial amount of money. “I would like to thank everyone who donated to our fundraiser,” Kerry FC Sporting Director Billy Dennehy said. “The

reaction was incredible and I couldn’t believe the amount raised when we finished up the final count.

“I know this will go a long way towards supporting Alex’s care and I hope the hard work from the club can help the Fitzgerald family going into the next couple of months.”

On the pitch, Kerry were unfortunate not to snatch a draw as Ryan Kelliher’s missed penalty saw them fall to a 0-1 defeat, but they bounced back on Monday night by booking their place in the final of the Munster Senior Cup with an impressive 4-1 win over the same opposition. Ronan Teahan, Seán McGrath (two) and Daniel Okwute got their names on the scoresheet for Conor McCarthy’s team. They will play either Waterford or Rockmount in the final.

Tonight (Friday) they return to league action with an away fixture against Athlone Town. Kick-off is at 7.45pm.

League final still in sight for ladies

The Kerry ladies fell to a seven-point defeat to Armagh on Sunday (3-14 to 1-13) but they remain on course for a spot in the league final.

The reigning Division 1 champions have their fate in their own hands going into the final two rounds of fixtures; win both games against Meath and Galway and they will find themselves in another decider, more than likely against runaway leaders Armagh who have now won five out of five.

Declan Quill and Darragh Long have been experimenting with their team throughout the league and while their line-up is growing stronger by the

March means Cheltenham

It’s March and racegoers will be all set for the Festival of Racing at Cheltenham, running from March 12-15.

They are all big races at Cheltenham but the biggest one, of course, is the Gold Cup just a week from today, Friday at 3.30pm. It’s a huge test of stamina and skill for the jockeys to steer their mounts clear of trouble over the 3 miles, 2.5 furlongs, navigating 22 fences along the way. It will be an historic event, celebrating 100

years of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and you won’t want to miss it on TV. Many will travel to England for the festival. Last year, Galopin Des Champs, ridden by Paul Townend and trained by Willie Mullins, won the Gold Cup odds of 10/3.

Who can ever forget the glory days of Killarney’s own Jim Culloty? The local man achieved that remarkable three-in-a-row of Gold Cups on Best Mate making a lot of local punters happy, especially on High Street, close enough to his home base at Lewis Road.

In 2022 Rachael Blackmore made history as the first female jockey to win the prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup. Riding the talented horse A Plus Tard, she secured a spectacular victory, 15 lengths clear of the field. She also triumphed in the Champion Hurdle and in the Grand National. Unfortunately, Constitution Hill, the reigning Champion Hurdle winner, won’t be participating in this year’s Cheltenham Festival. Trainer Nicky Henderson announced that the horse’s recent struggles with fitness and illness prevents him from going to post on opening day.

week, they still held Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh in reserve until midway through the second half. They might have gotten something out of the game were it not for some errant shooting in front of goal. Katie Brosnan did find the back of the net for the visitors – she scored 1-2 in total - but at the other end Armagh were far more clinical. Goals by Aimee Mackin (two) and Caroline O’Hanlon fired them to victory. With Dublin just a point behind them in third place, Kerry will more than likely need to secure maximum points from Rounds 6 and 7 to make the final.

Next up for The Kingdom is another away game against Meath on St Patrick’s Day (Sunday week).

U12 CUP: Killarney Athletic 0-0 Mastergeeha. Mastergeeha win 3-2 on penalties. Our U12 girls bowed out of the cup at the quarter final stage this evening at home to Mastergeeha on a penalty shootout. Our girls dominated large parts of the game and came up against a very strong organised side in Mastergeeha, when we eventually broke through their defence, the final ball, or poor touch let us down at the vital moment. Their keeper pulled off a great save also with 5 mins remaining to keep it 0-0. With fading light we made the decision to go straight to penalties and Mastergeeha’s experience told and won on a score of 3-2. Congratulations go to the visitors on the victory and we wish them all the best in the semi-final and we also look forward to doing battle again in a couple of weeks in the league. The girls still have everything to play for in the league and remain unbeaten so far this season in that competition.

U12 BOYS DIVISION 1: Killarney Athletic B 1 Park FC 6. The boys worked hard and stayed competitive in the first half and were unlucky to go in 3-1 down at half time. Park came out strong in the second half, adding 3 more goals and ran out deserved winners in the end. Lots of positives to take away for Athletics however as an impressive undefeated streak comes to an end.

U12 PREMIER DIVISION: Iveragh Utd 3-1 Killarney Athletic. Another long road trip for this morning for our young blues. Sean Quill opened the scoring on 12 minutes when played in with a delightful through ball from Rory Moynihan. Athletic remained in control of the first half up to stoppage time when Iveragh pounced to send the sides in level. A strong wind whipped up through the second half and Iveragh pressure told with two quick strikes to put this game firmly in the home sides favour. The young blues didn't give up and knocked the ball around well to regain a foothold in the game but to no avail as the game finished 3-1 to the hosts. Thanks to Iveragh for a sporting fixture and best of luck for the remainder of the season.

U13 GIRLS PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 0-6 MEK. Extremely proud of all our young Blues today the score did not reflect the fantastic work rate our Girls put into this game they never hung their heads only battled to the end that is the definition of development and team-

work. Fiercely proud of each and every player today well done.

MEK Galaxy

WELCOME MR. CHAIRMAN: The club is delighted to welcome Maurice O’Meara as our new Chairman. Maurice succeeds Liam Healy who has stood down. We all wish Maurice the best in his new position!

GIRLS U11: A fantastic morning in Killorglin, great to get the girls out for two great games against Killorglin AFC and Killarney Athletic FC in these U11 games the girls did so well against the other two teams especially considering the majority of the girls are U10. The opposition was strong, but we battled hard and won one of the games too with some fantastic teamwork and goals from Méabh McClure and Charlotte O’Conner well done to all of the girls who worked so hard and are improving with each week.

GIRLS PREMIER LEAGUE U13: Killarney Athletic 0 MEK 6. Great game by our girls today, we faced a tough Athletic side who made our girls work hard throughout the pitch, today's game gave some girls an opportunity to play in new positions, and they played amazing Tara

and Sinead in the back line was great to watch them keep the Athletics pressure away from our goal keeper, Ada O’Leary show her goal scored side coming up the left wing, Great game by all players, Goals, Ava Harty4 Ada O’Leary 2, POM Ava Harty.

GIRLS U14 REGIONAL SEMI-FINAL: Newcastle West 0 MEK Galaxy 2. What a night for the girls last night, away to Newcastle West on a cold wet night, the girls showed how good they are in another great performance by every player, Newcastle West put our girls under a lot of pressure! but failed the break us down and our defence held strong and got our first goal in the first half, the second half was pretty much the same and lots of pressure from both teams, but once again the Galaxy girls showed there class and scored a second goal to finish the game off well done to every player on a tough physical game. Goals Izzy Lyons 1and Isabelle O’Connor 1, POM Fluer O’Niell.

U15 GIRLS PREMIER: Mastergeeha 3 MEK Galaxy 2. Scorer Fluer O’Neill 2. Our girls battled hard, in cold conditions, against a well organised Mastergeeha team. Fluer O’Neill opened the scoring against the run of play. But the home team replied. HT 1-1. Mastergeeha came out in the 2nd half flying and went 3-1 up. We responded with a fantastic finish from Fluer O’Neill. In the last couple minutes we pushed hard but couldn't break down the Mastergeeha defence. All our girls were excellent and worked really hard. Well done to Ulick and the girls, and to Johnathan, who refed a great game. POTM Doireann Beasley and Fluer O’Neill.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Kerry FC U17 women’s side who played their first ever League of Ireland Match against CK United winning 4-0. Ex MEK Galaxy players Maggie Quirke, Suvi O’Connor, Izzy McGrath and Orla Barrett all played their part on the historic win.

EAST KERRY LEAGUE: The seniors entertained Gneeveguilla early Sunday morning in the last round of the East Kerry league. Played in lovely sunshine, it was a very close game with scores at a premium. Fossa started well with points from Eoin Talbot, Tadgh O’Shea and Ruari Doyle. Gneeveguilla hit the front with a goal after 15 minutes, but Fossa replied almost immediately with a goal from Emmett O’Shea after excellent build up play. The half time score was all square at 1-04 apiece. Points from Harry Buckley, Emmet O’Shea and a great point from Matt Rennie had Fossa in front early in the second half. Shane O’Sullivan pulled off a number of superb saves, including one from a penalty kick but Gneeveguilla finished strongly and held on to win on a scoreline of Fossa 1-08, Gneeveguilla 1-09. This concludes the league, and they now prepare for their first game in Div 2 of the County league in three weeks’ time.

MINOR COUNTY LEAGUE: Our minors suffered heartache in Duagh on Saturday afternoon in the county league. Dylan O’Meara had the ball in the back of the Duagh net after a searing run from Fionn Doyle after 5 minutes, the same player had another goal after 15 minutes and at this stage they were in complete control. Jack Spillane, Fionn Doyle, Jack Hallissey and David Butler were controlling the defence superbly and giving great ball into the forwards but with the aid of a strong wind, Fossa should have had more on the board at the break as they had plenty of chances. They lead, 2-05 to 0-05 at half

time but the wind was a major factor in the second half. Duagh started to claw back the lead and even though the Fossa players defended gallantly, they found it difficult to get out of their own half. Fossa still had the lead after 23 minutes, 2-07 to 0-11 but Duagh scored two goals from the 29th minute onwards to take the spoils on a score of 2-12 to 2-07. It was very tough on our players as the scoreline didn’t reflect the effort they put in, they gave it their all in really trying conditions, especially in the second half. Team: Darragh Whelton, Luke McCann, Fionn Doyle (0-01), Jack Spillane, Jack Hallissey (0-01), David Butler (0-01), Conor O’Mahony, Mark Kennelly, Ryan Brady (0-01), Sam Clerkin, Cathal Breen, Derek O’Gorman, Ronan Bennett (0-01), Dylan O’Meara (2-0), Harry O’Connor (0-02), Charlie Griffin, Morgan O’Brien.

Killarney Rugby

U16 GIRLS: Killarney/Iveragh/Listowel U16 girls were away to Ennis RFC in the 2nd round of the Munster cup, sunshine followed a very wet and windy warm up. K/I/L dominated the first 20 mins with great phases and rucking and got over for the first try, quickly followed by another to see us up 10. Ennis quickly responded with 2 tries from their no12 who was a massive threat all day. Half time score 17

to Ennis 10 K/I/L. Two quick tries in the 2nd half had Ennis at 22 but K/I/L doubled down and scored to get back in the game 15 to 22. K/I/L back lines started to move the ball quickly and a fantastic run from K/I/L no 8 and followed by conversion had the game tied at 22/22. A fantastic back line move had us up another try but with only mins left Ennis ran in another try and conversion. Ennis now 2 points ahead, our girls rallied and put phase after phase together, fitness levels played a huge part. Ennis on the 8-yard line gave away a penalty for offside. Up stepped Eliza, captain, for a nail-biting kick and slotted it between the posts for the last play of the game to seal our win. Every single player in the team were responsible for this epic win but have to give a shout out to Isabelle, Keelin, Muireann, Danielle, Amy and Ciara for playing 6. Thanks to Ennis girls for a brilliant game, warm welcome and hospitalities afterwards. Next up Killarney /Iveragh / Listowel play the semifinals on the 16th March.
