Killarney Advertiser ‘Echos of the Past’ from 1974

The theme for this year’s St. Patrick’s Festival is ‘Echoes of Killarney Past’ and is the first in a series of three festivals that will also celebrate our town’s present and future. The festivities will showcase Killarney’s history and how we came to be a bustling tourist town, the folklore and Killarney’s characters in years gone by.

Homage will be paid to the historic significance of local heritage sites such as Inisfallen Island, the 7th-century monastic settlement on Lough Leane which was a haven for scholars and scribes from 640 AD onwards. Ross Castle, our 15th-century fortress that stands as a testament to the O'Donoghue clan's power at the time and, of course, Muckross House and Gardens.

In line with this year’s festival theme, we’ve been digging through our archives and on page’s 56-63 in this week’s magazine our readers can take a trip down memory lane when reading the St. Pat-

rick’s weekend edition from March 15th 1974. The Killarney Advertiser was only a year old at the time but even as early as then, Danny Casey had a vision to create a local magazine that would promote Killarney people and businesses as the town was growing into the leading tourist destination we recognise today. This vision remains, and we are proud to be still supporting the community through our dif-

ferent activities, more than 50 years on. As the only local magazine that is designed and printed in Killarney, we are delighted to uphold our long-standing tradition with the Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and St Patrick’s Day Festival Committee where we change our more recognisable red masthead and magazine cover for a vibrant, green wrap-around cover to promote the weekend activities.

Jessie Buckley in line to play Joanne Hayes in Kerry babies movie

Killarney actress Jessie Buckley has been shortlisted to play Joanne Hayes in a new movie about the Babies scandal.

Director Jim Sheridan has revealed that he is working on a big screen adaptation of the story that rocked rural Ireland in the 1980s.

The Oscar-nominated director in conjunction with screenwriter and producer David Merriman has written a script for the film.

On 14 April 1984, a newborn baby boy was found dead with a broken neck and 28 stab wounds.

The body was discovered on White Strand beach near Caherciveen.

Hayes from Abbeydorney, approximately 80 kilometres away, who was known to have been pregnant, was arrested. She was in a relationship with a married Tralee man named Jerimiah Locke. She and her family confessed to the murder of the baby but later withdrew their confessions and admitted instead that Hayes's baby had been born on the family farm, had died shortly after birth, and had been wrapped in a plastic bag and buried on the farm in secret.

Hayes was charged with murder, but the charge was thrown out by a judge, and the Kerry Babies Tribunal, headed by Mr Justice Kevin Lynch, was set up to investigate the behaviour of the Gardaí at the time.

The Gardaí insisted that Hayes had become pregnant simultaneously by two different men and had given birth to both children, killing the one found on the beach.

Although the Hates family were eventually cleared of any wrongdoing, the case raised serious questions about the culture of the Garda Síochána, and the treatment of unmarried mothers in Irish society.

Sheridan is keen for A-list actors to play the roles of Locke and Hayes in the film adaptation of the story.

According to the Sunday Independent filming will start later this year. Locations will include Tralee courthouse and a small number of local people will be cast in

St. Patrick’s Day is traditionally the start of the tourist season in town and we are involved in a range of activities over the coming weeks and months that will show our continued commitment to promoting all that is great about Killarney. Our recent Shop Local campaign is shining a well-deserved spotlight on businesses in our community. The 2024 edition of our “We Are Killarney” tourism magazine will be published in early April. The magazine, which is packed with features and positive stories, promises to be another big hit with visitors. The Killarney Advertiser and our sister company KC Print are proud supporters of local events and we are looking forward to the upcomming Rally of the Lakes, which we proudly support.

As we get ready for a bumper weekend of activities in town, the Killarney Advertiser would like to take this opportunity to congratulate outgoing St. Patricks Festival Chairman Paul Sherry on a fantastic tenure. We would also like to wish incoming chairman Jason Clifford and his committee all the best for this year’s festival and beyond. We look forward to capturing the festive celebrations in next week’s magazine, and continuing to support local causes and businesses throughout 2024. Lá fhéile Pádraig sona dhuit.

roles.

Sheridan told the Sunday Independent that there are three actresses whom he admires that he would love to play the role of Joanne Hayes: Emma Stone, Eve Hewson, and Buckley.

Dermot Healy to improve town’s retail offering if elected

Local businessman Dermot Healy will prioritise the town’s retail offering if he gets elected to the Killarney Municipal District Council in June.

Mr Healy was nominated by Fine Gael to run for the party in this year’s Local Elections.

The local branch of the political part held its selection convention last week at the Heights Hotel in Killarney.

Mr Healy got the party’s nod ahead of Abdul Kafir and Iqbal Mahmud, both businessmen and members of the Bangladeshi community in the town, but party insiders have not yet ruled out running a second candidate in the Local Electoral Area.

Dermot is also well known in local circles. He is very active in Killarney Chamber of Tourism and commerce and one of the main organisers of the 4th of July Parade. The long-time member of Killarney and

District Motor Club is a former clerk of the course of the Rally of the Lakes, and sits on Motorsport Ireland’s Motorsport Council.

“I will work on all aspects of the town and if I can do something to improve people’s lives, no matter what, I will do my best,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

“I would like to do something on the number of empty shops in the town centre, maybe attract big name retailers to the town to increase our offering.”

stakeholders regarding the proposed scheme.

An open day was held last week at the ANAM centre and a webinar has also taken place where Kerry County Council presented the plans for this

scheme. Plans and Particulars of the proposed scheme are available for inspection during normal office hours until Wednesday, March 20 at the Kerry County Council, & Area Office, The Town Hall.

Road safety upgrades at Knockanes National School

Knockanes National School is in line for outside remedial work in coming weeks.

Cllr John O’Donoghue pushed for upgrade works on the exterior of Knockanes National School including road markings and the upgrading of parking bays.

This week it was confirmed that the works will be done once the “weather permits”.

“I am delighted following my representations that the Council have agreed to carry out some remedial work in front of Knockanes National School in Glenflesk, including repainting the road markings in front of the school,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

“These had become quite faded and were presenting a safety hazard for parents and staff at the school. The work will be done shortly as soon as the weather permits.”

T OWN TALK

Three-year plan for St Patrick's Festival

The new chairman of the Killarney St Patrick’s Festival wants the town to tell a great story, over three years, with a wonderfully engaging chapter shared with the public each year.

Jason Clifford, who heads up the newlook and vibrant organising committee, said a three-year strategy and theme for the event will see Killarney telling a very relevant tale rather than just having people walking behind marching bands and banners with no connecting link.

This year the theme will be Echoes of Killarney’s Past which will recall the work of the monks on Inisfallen Island as they scripted the magnificent annals, the 1861 visit of Queen Victoria which put Killarney on the map as a premier tourist destination, the battles at Ross Castle and the rich history and culture of the town and its surrounds.

Next year the theme will focus on Echoes of Killarney’s Present and in 2026 the theme will be Echoes of Killarney’s Future.

“We feel it is important to create a journey and to tell a story and Killarney has a great story to tell,” said Jason who is general manager at The Dunloe Hotel and Gardens.

He said chairing the St Patrick’s Festival is a great challenge and he is delighted to be involved with such a progressive committee.

“Every year up to now I have been with my wife and kids standing on the street and watching and enjoying the St Patrick’s Day parade without ever giving a second thought to the incredible work that went on behind the scenes to make it all happen and bring it all together so seamlessly,” Jason said.

“This year I can really see and appreciate what really has to be done in advance.”

He paid tribute to his predecessor, Paul Sherry, who chaired the festival committee for a number of years and turned it into a magnificent spectacle.

“Hats off to Paul because he did such an amazing job. He is still an advisor to the committee and he is always at the end of the phone if needed which he often is because he has a wealth of knowledge,” he added.

Saint Mary's in line for €4.5k renovation project

Saint Mary's Church Of Ireland, Kenmare Place, is in line for a €4,668 funding makeover thanks to funding announced this week by Minister Norma Foley.

A total of €103,379.50 has been release under the Built Heritage Investment and a further €147,550 under the Historic Structures Fund for 26 projects across Kerry. The schemes fund a variety of repairs and renovation works to prevent deterioration, protect character, and encourage the re-use of protected structures. The schemes also provide important support for the employment of traditional craftspeople and conservation professionals.

St Mary’s will get €4,668 under the scheme while a period cottage on Port

Road will get €8,250 to be put towards a new roof.

Minister Foley said: "Our built heritage is a tangible expression of our history and culture, and a distinctive and attractive element of our towns, villages and countryside.

"These funded works within Kerry will have an added economic benefit by generating employment for heritage contractors and other skilled crafts and tradespeople in the locality and I very much look forward to the works commencing apace."

The biggest beneficiary in County Kerry is the renovation of Hussey’s Bar in Castleisland. A total of €77,550 has been allocated to that protected structure to replace lintels, repair the front façade, replace slate to rear of roof and to replace ground floor windows.

Killarney tribute to Charlie Bird

Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone have paid tribute to legendary broadcast journalist Charlie Bird who passed away on Monday.

The RTE broadcaster was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2021, He was devastated but he did not sit back and instead thought about how best he could fundraise and raise awareness of MND. In 2022 he organised the ‘Climb for Charlie’ and he selflessly climbed Croagh Patrick despite set-backs.

On the same day as the ‘Climb for Charlie’ event in County Mayo, Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone organised a similar event in Killarney National Park.

“It is with sadness that we learned this Tuesday morning of the sad passing of

Charlie Bird,” said Christy Lehane of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone.

“On behalf of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone, I offer our sincere sympathy to his wife Claire, children and grandchildren.

“Charlie Bird touched all our lives as an exceptionally talented journalist. People stopped to listen when Charlie was doing an interview, and he was not afraid to ask the hard questions. His hunger and passion as a journalist was inspiring.

“He was very open and honest about his Motor Neurone journey, and he carried the burden of his illness with dignity, strength, and inspiration.

“I think the Irish people were in awe when Charlie Bird reached the top of Croagh Patrick.

“In doing this he raised much needed funds for IMNDA and importantly he raised awareness and got people talking about this awful disease.

“Soon he mobilized the whole country climbing mountains and walking parks to raise funds for the IMNDA, who depend so much on fundraising as 86% of their annual budget comes from fundraising.

“Charlie Bird died living and was courageously campaigning up to the end and extending the hand of friendship to everyone he met along the way.

“We thank him and admire him for his courage and all he did for Motor Neurone Disease”

Rest peacefully now Charlie your work on earth is complete and you have left us an enduring legacy."

Killarney a hub for climate action programme

Killarney, home to the pioneering coffee cup project, has been chosen to be the first hub for the exciting new Climate Action Programme launched by Fáilte Ireland.

Additionally, it is also planning to be the first town in Ireland to provide community-wide energy monitoring, solar generation and benchmarking.

Killarney also has an initiative in place to become the largest Electric Vehicle charged destination in the country. Sustainable destinations lead to carbon reduction, cost savings and sustainable tourism and it is what locals and visitors want as they seek a better way to live and play.

Tackling climate change is one of the biggest challenges and opportunities facing businesses today. With rising costs impacting the sector, reducing

carbon emissions is a smart way to save money and boost a reputation as a sustainable tourism business.

A new plan – Vision Killarney: Ireland’s Most Sustainable Town 2030 – is about to be launched.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce is organising a meeting, at which the plan and the benefits available to businesses and individuals will be outlined.

It will be held in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Wednesday, March 27 at 6.00pm and everybody is welcome to attend and play their part in realising this ambition for Killarney.

Killarney’s Italian job for St Patrick

Killarney will take on the Italian Job during this year’s St Patrick’s Festival as the town plays host to a group of over 50 visitors from Verrès, a small town in the Aosta Valley to the north-west of Turin.

They will bring with them all the colour and the excitement of the historic Carnevale Verrès which is a huge hit every year.

Strong links between the two locations were forged in 2020 when Killarney architect, Davide Mosca – a native of Verrès – returned to his home place when he was chosen to lead the festivities for the four-day Mardi Gras style festival.

According to legend dating back to the 1400s, the Count and Countess left Verrès Castle to join locals in a pre-Lent village celebration and the colourful tradition has been upheld since then, with one native son invited to play the role of the Count every year.

It effectively saw Davide, a graduate of the University of Politecnico di Torina, who has been living in Killarney for over 20 years, being crowned King for Italy’s version of the St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Since then some of his friends, including Killarney St Patrick’s Festival committee member Paul Sherry, have returned to parade in costume at the annual Carnev-

ale Verrès.

The festival’s distinctive knights, costumed soldiers and drummers will now parade through the streets of Killarney on St Patrick’s Day and it promises to be a spectacle rich in culture and history.

The group of 50 – including the Mayor of Verrès – will arrive in Shannon Airport on Saturday morning while a delegation of four people will leave two days earlier, by land, with a minibus to ferry the parade equipment, including trumpets, drums, shields, flags, armour, crossbows, bows, cloaks and helmets.

They will remain in Killarney until Tuesday, enjoying the parade and all the festivities, and spend a night in Dublin before returning to Italy.

There will be a real international flavour to the VIP stand at this year’s Killarney parade with Mayor of Killarney Cllr Niall Kelleher joined by the visiting mayors from sister and friendship towns Verrès in Italy, Schlebusch/Leverkusen in Germany, Casperia in Italy, Pleinfeld in Germany and Kendal in England.

Town parade to be one of the biggest yet

If you could gather all that is good about Killarney together in one place then this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade is it!

Over 60 community groups, sports clubs and businesses will march through the town on Sunday afternoon.

It is one of the town’s biggest festivals but other gatherings like the 4th of July and Wander Wild festivals are represented too.

The town twining association has invited groups from Britain, France, Italy,

Sweden and the USA, as well as local groups representing the Ukrainian and African communities make the parade a truly international occasion. Add in nearly every sports club in the town, charity organisations, marching bands and vintage cars it is an occasion not to be missed.

The parade starts at 2 pm on Mission Road, and makes its way along East Avenue, College St and Plunkett St before finishing at the observation stand on Main St.

Fossa Two Mile Comhaltas will host its annual Rambling House on Saturday night.

The event ran last year after an absence of a few years as a result of the pandemic.

But the 2023 show was so successful the team behind the Rambling House decided to keep it going.

“We would like to extend a warm wel-

come with a cup of tea and our traditional brack to all and hope you will join us for a night of music, song and dance,” said PRO Jackie Hennessy.

“It's our main source of funding and is always very well attended by locals and from afar.”

The Rambling House takes place at the Castlerosse Park Hotel on Saturday (March 16) at 8pm.

Olivia's book published as Gaeilge in time for St Patrick's Day

Killarney author Olivia Hope has had her debut ‘Be Wild, Little One’, translated into several languages including Irish.

Illustrated by Daniel Egnéus, ‘Be Wild, Little One’ has travelled the world with American and Australian editions as well as translations into French, German, Greek, Chinese and Japanese.

In early February, Galway publisher Futa Fata translated her much-lauded debut into Irish – ‘Bí Fiáin, A Chroí’, just in time

for St. Patrick’s day.

‘It's incredibly special to have your story published, but nothing can compare to the pride of having your work translated in your national language. I'm especially pleased with Tadhg MacDhonnagháin’s translation as he has kept the rhythm and rhymes of the original story - which is no mean feat!,” said Olivia.

Successful Lions National Convention in Killarney

Keynote speaker Mark Lyon, Vice President of Lions Clubs International from Connecticut, USA, was the highlight of Lions Ireland’s National Convention, which took place in Killarney last weekend.

Mr. Lyon also presented Joan O’Connor from Faha with the prestigious Lions International Melvin Jones Award for her many years of service to Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club.

Hosted by Killarney Lions Club, the convention brought 250 visitors to the town, including 150 delegates from Lions Clubs in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain and South Africa.

“It was an honour to host the convention” said Denis Doolan, President of Killarney Lions Club.

“Our convention committee and all our club members did a fantastic job making sure the convention delegates and their families enjoyed their time in Killarney. Hopefully it will help Lions clubs all over Ireland to keep serving communities over the coming year.”

Every aspect of the Convention, which

took place at the Killarney Plaza Hotel, was as sustainable as possible; for example an app was used in place of paper information packs for delegates.

The delegations were welcomed to Killarney by Cllr Marie Moloney, Deputy Mayor of Killarney Municipal District, at a reception in the Anam Arts and Cultural Centre. Mayor of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr. Niall Kelleher officially opened the Convention, which featured a number of sessions on Lions environmental, social and community projects from around Ireland. A number of delegates took part in a golf event at Ross Golf Club, and spouses and family members of delegates enjoyed a jaunting car and boat trip to Innisfallen island.

The Convention was brought to a close with a black tie ball at the Plaza Hotel.

Kerry Airport passenger figures highest in 15 years

Kerry Airport’s passenger figures in 2023 soared to levels that have not been seen for 15 years with an increase of 18% on the total from 2022.

A total of 419,281 passengers travelled through Kerry Airport last year on flights to Dublin and overseas destinations in the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Portugal.

That was just 4,000 less than in 2008 which was the highest ever year of traffic since scheduled flights commenced at Kerry Airport.

The CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said: “More than eight million people have flown in and out of Kerry Airport in the 34 years since scheduled flights commenced in 1989. We’ve surpassed the 400,000-mark twice during that period – in 2023 and before that in 2008 when passenger figures peaked at 423,248. We were on an upward trajectory in 2019 before the aviation industry was decimated by the pandemic. The recovery has been achieved thanks to the commitment of the Kerry Airport Board, our hard-work-

ing management team and staff, the airlines who service the routes and of course, the travelling public.”

Flights to the UK - Manchester, London Luton and London Stansted - accounted for half of the overall passenger footfall in 2023.

The summer sun destinations in Spain and Portugal saw an 92% average seat occupancy in 2023 and booking activity is strong ahead of the commencement of the routes on April 1 and 4.

Kerry Airport recently announced that Chalair will return to the Kingdom to service three routes to popular summer holiday destinations in France commencing from 29th June 2024.

Such was the success of last summer’s weekly service to Brittany, Chalair decided to introduce 13 weekly flights between Kerry and Brest in Brittany and Caen in Normandy and 10 weekly flights to Pau near the Pyrénées until September.

Kerry Airport already serves Alicante, Faro, Dublin, London (Luton & Stansted), Manchester and Frankfurt Hahn with Ryanair.

Welcome reception hosted by Marie Moloney.

Mods & Minis

Styling Killarney’s kids for over 20 years

Mods & Minis is a one stop shop for kids’ clothes and gifts from newborn to 12 years, stocking a range of fashionable and functional clothing at a very reasonable price as well as Christening, Holy Communion and Confirmation outfits.

We caught up with Deirdre McCloskey this week as we continue to highlight local businesses in our Shop Local Awareness Campaign. Deirdre grew up in Blackthorn House, in High St, where her brother Sean now runs a popular gift shop. After graduating from college as a nurse, Deirdre worked in Dublin for a number of years, before taking up a position in UHK. After returning home to Killarney with her husband Thomas and children Sorcha, Thomas and Fionn, Deirdre noticed a gap in the availability of good quality, sustainable, reasonable priced fashion for children, and so she went about opening her own shop.

Mods & Minis celebrates twenty years in business this year, and Deirdre has had

some time to reflect on the many highs and the lows,

“It’s been a journey with up and downs for sure. Over the years we have added new locations and built up a good customer base. We also created an online presence which worked extremely well during Covid. Whether it’s finding new and sustainable suppliers or staying upto-date with the latest trends, we are always trying to look ahead.”

Mods & Minis moved location from Deerpark to the Outlet Centre last year and Deirdre and the team are very grateful to all of the customers that have remained loyal and followed them into town.

“We have gotten to know our customers and their children and even their grand-

SHOP LOCAL OFFERS:

children and our customers are so loyal. Killarney offers so much to those that live and work here. There is such a great mix of vibrant shops, good restaurants and of course we are spoilt for choice for scenic walks (and my dogs second that!)”

The children’s wear shop stocks seasonal clothing all year round with party dresses, occasional wear and baby gifts. They stock quality clothing from reputable and sustainable suppliers with brands like Name IT from Denmark, Babybol from Spain, BabyBoo from Cork and other Irish suppliers like Shoobees and LittleBowPip.

“Trends come and go but the quality of the clothes speaks for themselves. We pride ourselves on supplying clothes that stand the test of time. We have customers who tell us that the clothes they bought from us two, three, four years ago were handed down to younger siblings, which is a huge cost saving for parents” Mods & Minis are also a well-established

retailer for Communion wear and accessories, and Deirdre explained how customers have travelled from other counties to prepare for Holy Communion occasions.

“Customers can book an appointment online and our experienced staff put time aside to help make the all-important choices”

So what is the key to running a successful business for over twenty years?

“Customer service is key” Deirdre explains. “We pride ourselves on that. We offer a personalised shopping experience that simply can’t be matched by larger chain stores or online retailers. The store manager in Killarney is Betty Walsh, another Killarney native. She started out with us in the very first Mods & Minis store located in New Street. Betty takes ownership and pride in the store. Children often refer to it as 'Betty’s shop'. Over the years she has loved seeing kids grow up and move on through life.

"All our staff particularly love Communion time, seeing the children’s faces when they try on their Communion dress or suit is priceless. We book them in by appointment so we can spend dedicated time with them and not to rush the process. It is not long before some of those girls will be saying ‘Yes to a Dress’ again, albeit a wedding dress!"

We are coming up to St. Patrick’s Day, and as a 100% Irish owned business, Deirdre hope is for continued support for local businesses in Killarney.

“While costs rise for all, we will continue to offer quality clothing and gifts that last. Thanks to the Killarney Advertiser for the Shop Local campaign and we are delighted to be a part of such a diverse and resilient retail landscape in Killarney."

Mods & Minis are open all weekend, including St. Patrick’s day, so make sure to give them a visit in the Killarney Outlet Centre!

World Book Day at Holy Cross School

Holy Cross Mercy School was a sea of colour on Thursday March 7 as children arrived dressed up as their favourite character from a book. It was a fun filled day where children talked about their favourite book; visited the local library; walked to the local book shop (Eason) to exchange their World Book Tokens for free books; designed book covers; listened to World Book Day songs and took part in a World Book Day

Quiz.

“Celebrating World Book Day is one of the highlights of our calendar. We firmly believe that nurturing a love of reading is one of the greatest gifts we can give the children in our care. Exposure to quality children’s literature can ignite the children’s curiosity, imagination and understanding of the world around them. It lays the foundation for a lifetime of learning,” said Principal Mrs. Davern.

Kerry Ambassador Programme holds ‘Network Day’ for its founding Ambassadors

Last week, in conjunction with the Cantillon Conference and Kerry Business Leaders Dinner, founding Kerry Ambassadors from the Kerry Ambassador Programme were brought together for a day of valuable networking and engagement with their fellow Ambassadors, industry leaders and county representatives.

Launched in October 2022, the Kerry Ambassador Programme is a county initiative designed to drive economic growth through business events and raise Kerry’s profile as a global business hub. Kerry Convention Bureau lead this exciting initiative, in partnership with Kerry County Council, Failte Ireland, Kerry Tourism Industry Federation, Kerry SciTech and Prosper Kerry.

The day commenced with an invitation to participate in Munster Technological University Cantillon Conference, alongside 180 national and international industry leaders, economists, journalists, academics, and entrepreneurs at Ballygarry Estate Hotel, examining and exploring this year’s theme: Transforming to Secure a

Sustainable Future.

An exclusive early evening networking reception for the founding Ambassadors and Programme Partners was then held at The Rose Hotel where an update on the Ambassador Programme and newly launched unified place brand for Kerry was shared.

In a presentation given by Becky Hargrove, Manager of the Kerry Convention Bureau, it was highlighted that in the sixteen months since the programme has launched, through opportunities developed in conjunction with the Ambassadors, business events worth an estimated €2.9m to the economy have been confirmed, and another €3.9m of business opportunities are in the pipeline.

This reception was followed by an evening of celebration at the Kerry Innovation Centre’ Kerry Business Leaders Dinner, where the Ambassadors joined 200 invited guests to recognise and honour ambitious businesses and entrepreneurs’ success stories, including the award of Emerging Business Leader for 2024 going to founding Kerry Ambassador Mariana Kobal and her partner Shane Hassett from WAZP.

Becky Hargrove, Manager of Kerry Convention Bureau and Kerry Ambassador Programme lead said: “We were thrilled to bring our founding Ambassadors together for what was a wonderful day of networking and engagement, and to have an opportunity to share important updates with our ambassadors on both the programme itself and the recently launched place brand for Kerry”

“To be an ambassador is to advocate for Kerry. As demonstrated by the success achieved already, our ambassadors are using their knowledge and networks

to assist Kerry Convention Bureau and our industry partners in identifying new business opportunities for the County,” she said. “As Kerry continues to build and position its reputation as both a future focused premier business events destination and one of Ireland’s leading knowledge and innovation hubs, this collaboration with our ambassadors will serve to strengthen and deliver economic growth for the county.”

Kerry Convention Bureau (KCB) is a non-profit organisation specialising in attracting and developing convention, meeting and group business to the county and increasing the contribution of business and conference tourism to the Kerry economy.

It has a county wide membership comprising venues, hotels, activity and transport providers, travel companies and conference organisers who have joined forces to attract business events to the area.

‘SHEE’ ready to rock Main Street for Wander Wild

Killarney local David Sheerin aka SHEE will be playing a live DJ set on Main St. in Killarney as a part of this year's Wander Wild Festival.

Although David has been based in Limerick for the past eight years, Killarney has always been home. The DJ/Producer is looking forward to Saturday, March 23 where he plans to entertain the Wander Wild festivalgoers with a live DJ set. We caught up with David this week and started out by asking him about next week's event.

Well David, are you excited to be playing in your hometown next weekend?

Awh yes, I'm absolutely buzzing! A big thanks to Wander Wild for having me. Killarney has always been such an important part of my career. I ran my first ever event way back when I was 16 with a few friends in Mustang Sally’s nightclub. I actually had to sneak in cause I was underage! Wander Wild Festival

is running from the 22- 24 March and promises to be a cracking weekend of outdoor activities, workshops and events. My set at Base Camp for the Wander Wild Chillout, starts at 6 PM on Saturday. I am looking forward to seeing some of my friends and family from Killarney and I hope all of your readers can come out and support the event too.

Where did you get the DJ name SHEE?

My DJ name "SHEE" comes from my surname "SHEE-rin", I think its self-explanatory but a lot of people ask that question ha ha.

Are you doing music full-time?

Yes, I am currently a full time DJ and Producer. I have been producing music since the age of fifteen, and count myself very lucky to be doing this for a living now. Don't get me wrong, that comes with its ups and downs too! But I have been able to sustain a living doing the two things that I love the most.

What first sparked your interest in DJing and music production?

So I have quite a different story of how I got into music production! Growing up I didn't really play any instruments and wasn’t good at music in school, but I was into gaming and hanging out with

friends over the internet. I used to make gaming videos (before you ask, they are all taken off youtube ha ha). I used to edit the videos myself using other people’s tracks that I found online. One day I thought to myself, "how cool would it be if I made my own tune and put it in a video that I made". After that I downloaded some music production software and I just got hooked!

What sort of music inspired you?

Back then a lot of music I used to listen to was liquid drum and bass, but as I got more into producing, EDM became huge. The likes of Aviici, deadmau5, Porter Robinson and Daft Punk were all big influences for me as a teenager before I started getting into house music - which is where I started to think I wanted to do this as a full time career.

What are some of your most memorable gigs so far?

I'm so lucky to have played and experienced so many amazing gigs in my career already. It’s hard to pick the stand out ones cause each gig is different and I just enjoy the fact that I get to go up and do something that I love each time! If I had to choose off the top of my head I would probably have to say the 2 gigs at Electric Picnic festival last year, which were absolutely insane. The first gig that weekend I wasn't expecting too much of a turnout as it was on pretty early in the day, but everyone showed up and the sun was beaming down (a rare occurrence for an Irish festival) and the vibes were just beautiful. The second gig that weekend I played the famous "Rave in the Woods" stage which has been a dream stage of mine ever since I started attending festivals back in 2015. It was by far the biggest crowd I've ever played to, something between four or five thousand on a Sunday night, it was just incredible... I still haven't gotten over it! Is there a lot of travelling involved?

Yeah there is quite a bit of travelling involved. It's a huge part of being a DJ and sometimes can get a bit overwhelming. However, it’s also a huge blessing to get to travel the world and do what I love. DJing has given me the opportunity to travel to places like Canada, California, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Spain and more. The fact that I get to travel and

experience these places through my work is something that I never take for granted!

Where do you find inspiration for your music?

My usual creative process without getting too technical is starting off with a sample or a melody that I like and then building the track around that. I listen to quite a lot of music all the time and a lot of it isn't actually electronic music. I love listening to all sorts, from Indie to Jazz, hip-hop to techno and everything in between. Whatever I'm feeling that day. I get a lot of inspiration from different types of music!

If you could collaborate with any artist (living or dead), who would it be?

Great question! It would be a toss-up between Daft Punk and Flume for me. Both massive inspirations for my music and sound and are both my favourite artists. So it would be a dream come true to make a track with either of them!

What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry in Ireland first and then internationally?

The music scene in Ireland is definitely on its way back. I think it took a huge hit during Covid and is only starting to become what it was pre-pandemic. That being said, there is still massive room for improvement. The fact that the new late licensing laws are being pushed back further is having a massive impact on the night-time economy here. Internationally, I think the music industry is thriving. Electronic music is global which gives a lot of new opportunities to up-and-coming DJs and producers. Let’s hope Ireland continues to build on the incredibly talented music scene we have here!

What is the most rewarding aspect of being a DJ and music producer?

I think the feeling you get after a really good set or after making a tune is one of the best feelings. Also, being your own boss is nice and having the time to work on new music. Getting to meet so many interesting and friendly people in the music scene is also hugely enjoyable for me personally!

What advice would you give to aspiring DJs and music producers who are just starting out?

Stick at it! DJing and producing comes with highs and lows. When you go a few weeks without getting a gig, don’t panic! Everyone is in the same boat. Just keep motivated and keep pushing yourself, it’ll all be worth it in the end!

Starting everything from scratch is not scary when you have no choice

Anastasiia Garbera is a Ukrainian and a professional photographer with over 11 years of experience.

You see her with a camera on the streets of Killarney because she traditionally films parades as a volunteer for the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism or various events held by the Ukrainian community.

Anastasiia is always smiling and full of enthusiasm. She is putting a lot of effort into starting her favourite business - photography in Killarney.

And gradually, she has orders for commercial, wedding and children's photography.

Her Instagram is full of happy photos and you may think that her story is a fairy tale or a success story.

However, this is not entirely true. We caught up with Anastasiia over a cup of coffee to find out more about her life here in Killarney.

"It will soon be two years since I ended up in Killarney with my two sons. When the full-scale invasion of Russia began, my sons were eight and six years old, and we immediately found ourselves under occupation.

"For three and a half months we lived under the shelling and domination of Russia. Hiding in the basement of our house, it was scary when tanks drove down our street, and once Russian soldiers entered our yard with weapons and checked our documents and our political views.

"My children were very scared and I decided that it was time to leave my native home," recalls Anastasiia with tears in her eyes.

In the town of Zalizniy Port, Kherson region, in the south of Ukraine, Anastasiia had her own photo studio and her own

London photo wins Camera Club’s monthly award

Killarney members enjoyed another great competition last week with a fabulous array of architecture photos from across the globe.

Well done to Ade Desbrow who won the Unrestricted category with this unique image of a colourful office building in London.

“I was in London last September for the weekend and thought it would be a good opportunity to get some images of London landmarks, with the architecture competition in mind,” he said. “I set off quite early one morning and was walking from St Paul’s down Ludgate Hill. I went to cross the Old Bailey road to go and see the courthouse. This office block, across the road from the Old Bailey, immediately caught my attention, with the curved shape and the colours of the building. So, I had to take some photographs of it. It was just after 7am so the early morning light was an added bonus. From all the iconic landmarks I photographed that weekend this photo of a simple office block is my favourite.”

business.

She conducted wedding and family photography. By the way, in terms of population, the Iron Port is like Killarney, with 14,000 citizens.

"After we decided to leave Ukraine, I could only take a very small baggage. For me, the most important thing was to take a camera, so all I took from my belongings were just a few T-shirts," Anastasiia says,".

"My photo studio filled with expensive equipment, lights and scenery was captured by the Russian military in the first days of the war, and after the Kakhovskaya dam was blown up in the summer of last year, it was also completely flooded. The water level reached 12-14 meters and I understand that my studio, in which I have invested so much love and money, is completely destroyed. All I have left are unpaid loans for equipment and one camera."

Anastasiia is very active in learning English, raising two sons, and has just started out as a commercial freelance photographer.

With only one camera, she began her new chapter in history. The photographer takes on any orders and always finds time for volunteer work. Anastasia shoots food photography, photography for restaurants and bars, hotels, weddings, and plans to shoot communion and confirmation.

"I love people very much and always notice something beautiful in them. I am very happy when I can capture this beauty," Anastasia sums up our conversation. I really want to believe that we will see the name Anastasiia Garbera more and more often under different pictures.

Killarney Musical Society has had a wonderful week performing Michael Collins to huge crowds in the INEC this week.

Pride of place at St Brendan's goes to Colm O Brien, Michale Pingo, Bryn Flaherty and Stephen Wickham, students of the school and members of the cast. On Tuesday our 5th year Music, TY and LCA students enjoyed their trip to this historical musical which has proven a triumph for our local society. Well done boys, we look forward to many more performances of this calibre!

Engineers' Week in St Brigid's College

Last week saw Engineer’s Week being celebrated across Ireland, and also here in St. Brigid’s. Engineering challenges and projects were undertaken in various classes from 1st to 6th year. Tasks included ‘The Egg-drop Challenge’, where students designed and built a structure in an attempt to protect an egg dropped from a height from breaking. There were varying designs and varying degrees of success, so well done to those who managed to retrieve an unbroken egg.

The ’Spaghetti-Marshmallow’ challenge was another favourite, where students had to plan and create a free-standing structure using limited materials, to raise a marshmallow up to the greatest height possible without toppling. It’s amazing to see how heavy a fluffy marshmallow becomes when it’s perched on top of a tall skinny spaghetti tower!

Past-pupil Niamh Cronin spoke to classes about her work as a Civil Engineer with PUNCH Consulting Engineers. This was a very interesting experience as Niamh described how her studies at St. Brigid’s led her to a degree from UCC, followed by further study, and an exciting career that has taken her all over the world, including stints in Perth and Singapore. Niamh encouraged the girls to consider Engineering as a career path, an area that is traditionally male-dominated, as there is huge demand for engineers of all disciplines both at home and around the world. It is an exciting and evolving area, as engineering is essential to help us adjust to an ever-changing planet with increasing energy, infrastructure and climate demands. Thanks to Niamh for taking the time to come and visit us.

Kneecap boycott US festival over Gaza plight

Readers may remember an episode of The Late Late Show from February that saw the hip-hop trio Kneecap performing and sitting down in conversation, wearing pro-Palestine badges and clothing.

RTÉ had to release a statement after to say that, prior to their appearance, the band had agreed through their management not to wear the emblems – but then proceeded to wear them live on air in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

This week, the group have joined a

Cillian

After years of entertaining audiences with his captivating performances, Cork actor Cillian Murphy has finally reached the pinnacle of Hollywood recognition. At the 97th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday night, Murphy emerged victorious, taking home the coveted Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's biopic, "Oppenheimer."

Murphys masterfully captured Oppenheimer's brilliance, ambition, and the

growing list of artists boycotting SXSW

2024 Over its US Military Ties. The popular Belfast trio has announced they are pulling out of the upcoming South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas amidst controversy surrounding the festival's continued partnership with the US Army and various defence contractors.

Kneecap released a statement on social media earlier in the week, citing "unacceptable deep links the festival has to weapons companies and the US military." They specifically mentioned their

objection to sponsorships by companies such as RTX Corporation, a major defence contractor. The group highlighted the ongoing conflict in Gaza, stating that these sponsorships enable "a genocide and famine against a trapped population."

SXSW has yet to release a formal statement regarding the boycotts. However, in past years the festival has defended its decision to partner with the US Army, stating that the sponsorship helps fund educational and artistic programs for veterans.

Japan's rocket launch ambitions suffer setback

On March 13, 2024, Japan's space exploration efforts encountered a setback when the private company Space One's debut orbital launch attempt ended in failure. The rocket, named Kairos, exploded just seconds after lifting off from the Space Port Kii in Wakayama Prefecture.

The 18-meter-long Kairos, carrying a mock-up of a government spy satellite, blasted off shortly after 11:00 AM local time. However, live-streamed footage captured the fiery explosion just five seconds into the flight. Thankfully, no injuries were reported as all debris landed within the designated launch site. The company stated that the rocket's automated safety system detected an anomaly. Despite the setback, some within Space One expressed a positive outlook. Company President Masakazu Toyoda stated they were "taking what happened in a positive way and remain prepared to take up the next challenge."

internal struggle that came with ushering in the nuclear age. His emotional range, from the scientist's early idealism to his eventual burden of responsibility, resonated deeply with viewers.

This win marks a significant milestone in Murphy's career. A mainstay in Christopher Nolan's films, he has delivered memorable performances in movies like "Inception," "The Dark Knight" trilogy, and "Dunkirk." Despite his consistent excellence, an Oscar nomination had previously eluded him. The victory signifies a validation of his talent and dedication to

his craft.

Taking the stage, Murphy expressed his gratitude, stating, "I'm a very proud Irishman. This is for all the dreamers out there. We all live in Oppenheimer's world now. We're all living in the nuclear age that he created." He went on to thank director Christopher Nolan, calling their collaboration "the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you've taken me on over the last 20 years."

With this Oscar win under his belt, Cillian Murphy's career trajectory is sure to reach even greater heights.

Charlie Bird: A Legacy of Hope and Resilience

Irish journalism lost a giant with the passing of Charlie Bird on Tuesday. Bird, a veteran RTE broadcaster for 40 years, captured headlines not just for his news reporting but for his courageous battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and his subsequent fundraising efforts. Bird's career spanned over four decades, marked by his dedication to truth, empathy, and a commitment to holding power accountable. He was to the fore of a number of major events including the Stardust Fire, the IRA Ceasefire and the National Irish Bank Scandal.

Despite his acclaimed reporting abilities it was his fight with illness late in life that was most impressive. Diagnosed with MND in 2021, Bird faced his illness with remarkable fortitude. He used his platform to raise awareness about the debilitating disease, but more importantly, he embarked on a mission to raise vital funds for charities supporting those living with MND and mental health struggles. Bird's most impactful campaign was "Climb With Charlie." In April 2022, de-

spite the physical challenges posed by MND, he led a gruelling climb up Croagh Patrick. Joined by celebrities, fellow journalists, and thousands of ordinary people, the climb became a national spectacle, symbolising hope, determination, and the power of community.

The "Climb With Charlie" campaign smashed fundraising targets, raising a staggering €3.6 million for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House, a leading suicide prevention charity. Bird's inspiring journey resonated with people across Ireland and beyond, proving that even in the face of immense adversity, one can make a profound difference.

Leading tributes to the campaigning broadcaster, President Michael D Higgins said this week:

"As an intuitive journalist, Charlie identified with causes from below. His dedicated pursuit of the truth, and immense ability to build warm relationships that would last through life with all those with whom he came in contact, made him one of the outstanding journalists of his generation."

US House passes bill that could lead to ban of TikTok

The US House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday that could potentially lead to a ban on TikTok, the hugely popular video-sharing app. The bill, titled the "Securing Our App Stores Act," cites national security concerns as the primary reason for potentially banning the app.

The bill empowers the Commerce De-

EU law to ensure responsible use of AI

The European Union took a significant step towards regulating Artificial Intelligence (AI) this Wednesday with the adoption of the AI Act. This landmark legislation, hailed as the world's most comprehensive to date, aims to strike a balance between fostering innovation in AI and protecting citizens from potential harms.

The new act will ensure AI applications deemed a threat to fundamental rights, safety, or security are banned. This includes systems like social scoring used by some governments. It will also ensure that applications posing significant risks, such as AI-powered facial recognition software, require strict compliance measures. These systems will undergo rigorous testing and human oversight

to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability. It also outlines that AI applications with minimal risk face fewer regulations but must still adhere to transparency standards..

The AI Act is believed to be a significant step towards responsible AI development. It sets a global precedent for other countries looking to regulate this rapidly evolving technology. The legislation is expected to spur innovation in areas like explainable AI, where users can understand how AI systems reach their decisions. While the AI Act represents a major breakthrough, many experts in the field believe that balancing innovation with regulation will be an ongoing challenge. The Act also requires member states to implement its provisions into national law, potentially leading to variations in enforcement across the EU.

partment to review and potentially ban apps that pose a national security risk. While the bill doesn't explicitly name TikTok, it's widely understood that the app, owned by the Chinese tech giant ByteDance, is a primary target. US lawmakers have expressed concerns that user data collected by TikTok could be accessed by the Chinese government. TikTok has vehemently denied any such allegations, stating that user data is

stored outside of China and is subject to rigorous security measures. The potential ban comes amidst heightened tensions between the US and China. Concerns about Chinese intellectual property theft and data security have strained relations between the two superpowers. TikTok, with its immense reach and user base, has become a focal point in this ongoing geopolitical struggle.

The bill passed the House with a rare bipartisan majority but still needs to be voted on by the Senate. Even if passed by both houses, it would then require President Biden's signature to become law.

Classic car run with Killarney finish to launch on Monday

A classic car run that will finish in Killarney has been announced.

Millstreet Vintage Club will organise a road run on April 14 to raise funds for the Kerry Cancer Support Group Health Link Transport – popularly known as the Cancer Bus.

The club will launch the event at the Wallis Arms Hotel, Millstreet on Monday. (March 18) at 1.30pm.

They promise a scenic route that will finish in at the Gleneagle Hotel.

The Millstreet Club ran its second outing of the year last Sunday. Over 70 cars participated in a run over old Cork ‘20’ roads in North Cork.

However, Killarney Valley Vintage and Classic Club have an event pencilled in for the same day and it remains to be seen if both will go ahead on April 14 or if one of the two events will have to change dates.

Meanwhile the Roughty Valley Club will run an event on March 24, starting in Macroom and ending at the Top of Coom.

DNG Ted Healy shortlisted for prestigious marketing award

Hot on the heels of being named DNG branch of the year for 2023, DNG Ted Healy has now been shortlisted for The Michael Glynn Marketer of the Year for 2024.

The DNG Annual property conference and Property Awards takes place on April 19 in Tulfarris Hotel and Golf Resort in Co Wicklow.

The Michael Glynn award honours a branch that consistently delivers exceptional marketing performance for their clients, and is named in memory of one of the best property marketers in the business and a partner in DNG; he was head of franchising at the time of his sudden passing in 2019.

“It is a great honour to be shortlisted for this award, particularly after being

named as a branch of the Year for 2023. I knew Michael well since we first teamed up with DNG back in 2005 and we had a great relationship so it is particularly pleasing to be nominated in this category,” said Ted Healy.

Property marketing has evolved and changed dramatically in recent years.

At DNG, new technologies have been embraced to provide clients with bestin-class marketing packages for their homes.

“Covid lockdowns provided us with an opportunity to rethink and recalibrate our marketing offerings,” added Ted.

Quest Kenmare opens adventure race season

More than 1,400 adventure racers kicked off the first Quest Adventure Race of the year in Kenmare, Co Kerry on Saturday last.

Starting and finishing in the South Kerry town, Quest Kenmare takes in the stunning scenery of Molls Gap, the Kerry Way, Esk Mountain, and Kenmare town, along four different routes: 28km Challenge route, 43km Sport route, a 46km Dual route (new for 2024), and a 79km Expert route.

Race Organiser Oliver Kirwan said the continued popularity of Quest Kenmare is testament to people’s love of the event and adventure racing

“We have a special affinity with Kenmare and are delighted to always hold our first adventure race of the season here.

Thank you to all the businesses who operated outside their normal hours to accommodate participants and their supporters, Kenmare Marketing and Events Group and the volunteers who continue to give up their valuable time to make this event possible,” he said.

Jerry O’Sullivan of Kenmare Marketing and Events Group (KMEG) said, "Kenmare is very pleased to welcome the wonderful Quest Adventure series,

competitors and spectators to Town. The colour, vibrancy and business they bring to town is a very welcome boost as we enter a new tourist season."

Winners of the Expert route were Sebastien Giraud and local Kenmare woman Ellen Vitting, who both defended their titles successfully from 2023.

Winners of the Sport route were Paul O’Brien and Caroline McLoughlin. Winners of the Dual route were Barry Meade and Deirdre Harrington.

Winners of the Challenge route were Johnathan Berry and Louise Fogarty (see notes for full times and results).

Quest Kenmare and Elite Event Management are grateful for the ongoing support and partnership for this event from Kerry Marketing and Events Group, Kerry County Council, and local groups and clubs.

We are grateful to main Quest Adventure Series sponsor Volvo Ireland Cars, official snack partner All Real, and event partner Nuasan.

A job search strategy

Sometimes you arrive (for whatever reason) at the decision to start applying for a new role and sometimes the opportunity arrives unannounced.

So for anyone applying for a new role I recommend the following strategy –let’s call it a job search strategy. I always recommend that people sit down and think about what they want from their next role – the non-negotiables and the ‘might be nice to have’. This should include things like working from home/hybrid working/ travel/additional and more senior responsibilities (managing a team, client development etc), enhanced benefits, potential further promotion. Your CV should really be the hook to get people interested in you and invite you to interview. It’s your opportunity to showcase your skills (technical and people), expertise and achievements. It should be no more than 2 pages (that’s right 2 pages!!). NB some firms are now using AI to screen CVs so ensure the keywords in the job description are in your CV. Your LinkedIn profile should be upto-date and should reinforce who you are, your experience and network of contacts. There is a setting on LinkedIn that alerts recruiters (but no one else) that you are actively looking for a new role and you might want to activate that. NB this is not the Open to Work feature which appears on your profile picture.

Look at your routes to the job market. The first and most obvious is the

recruiter or head-hunter. There are a lot of excellent recruiters out there and I recommend you do some research and short-list 2/3 to speak to. Try not to have your CV with a lot of recruiters. Have an initial telephone conversation and if you are happy following that, send them your CV and have a follow-up call with them. Clearly articulate your experience and what it is you are now looking for. Keep in touch with them regularly so that they think of you when opportunities come up.

Job Boards are okay but can be demotivating – frequently sending your CV off and hearing nothing. The ‘Jobs’ section on LinkedIn can have some excellent roles and its worth using the search function regularly.

Approaching companies directly – check out the vacancies on their website or if there is nothing there then perhaps email a speculative application to whoever is responsible for hiring.

Finally, there is your own network. There will be people who know you and your work quite well, perhaps arrange a catch-up coffee with them and mention you are considering your career options and would be interested in their views – and see where that conversation goes!

Small claims procedure KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

What is the small claims procedure?

The small claims procedure (also known as the Small Claims Court) is a service which provides an inexpensive way for consumers and businesses to resolve disputes without employing a solicitor. It is provided by the local District Court offices. To use the service, the claim cannot exceed €2,000.

Who are the parties in a claim?

If you are making the claim, you are known as the claimant. The person you are claiming against is known as the respondent. Both the claimant and the respondent must be living or based in Ireland. If either party lives or is based in another EU member state, the European small claims procedure should be used.

How to make a claim?

To make a claim, you must complete a small claims procedure application form and return it to the District Court Office in the relevant area. This form is available from local District Court offices where staff can help you complete it. You can submit the application online, by post, or in person at a local District Court office.

It is important when completing the application form to give all the necessary information. This will help the Small Claims Registrar to process your claim. If no resolution can be reached, it will also make it easier to enforce a decree or court order, if one is granted.

The Courts Service website has more information on how to apply on its website.

Where to make a claim?

The small claims procedure is provided through local District Court offices. You make your claim to the District Court office in the relevant area. The relevant area is one or more of the following:

• Where the person you are making a claim against lives or carries on business

• Where the contract was made

• Where the damage to property took place

You will find a list of District Court areas on the Courts Service website. What types of claims are dealt with under the small claims procedure?

The procedure can be used to resolve consumer complaints and certain other types of disputes.

You can make consumer claims about:

• Minor damage to your property

• Goods or services bought for private use from someone selling them during business.

• The non-return of a rent deposit for certain kinds of rented properties, such as a holiday home or a flat in a premises where the landlord also lives.

The small claims procedure cannot be used to make consumer claims for

debts, personal injuries, or breaches of leasing or hire-purchase agreements.

Can a business claim against another business?

Businesses can make claims against other businesses relating to contracts for goods or services purchased. It does not apply to claims about:

• Breaches of leasing agreements

• Debt or liquidated damages

• Agreements to which the Consumer Credit Act 1995 applies.

How does the small claims procedure work?

The claimant submits the application form to the Small Claims Registrar either online, by post, or in person at a local District Court office. The respondent is notified of the claim and is sent a copy by post. The respondent usually has 15 calendar days to reply, but this can vary depending on the District Court office.

If the respondent disputes the claim and no settlement can be reached, the matter is set down for a hearing in the District Court. If this happens, you will receive a letter from the District Court office telling you the date and time of the court hearing, and the location of the court itself. The case will be heard in public as part of a normal sitting of the District Court. You may wish to get legal advice.

Under Irish law, a business is required to be legally represented if it goes to court. Can the court’s decision be appealed?

If either you or the respondent are unhappy with the decision of the court, you have the right to appeal to the Circuit Court. An appeal application must be made to the court within 14 days, but you can apply to have this timeframe extended.

The respondent is likely to have legal representation and the judge can award costs against you, so it is important to carefully consider any decision to appeal.

How much does it cost to make a claim?

It costs €25 to make a claim through the small claims procedure.

If your claim is rejected as not suitable for the small claims procedure, you will be refunded the fee.

If your claim is accepted as suitable for the small claims procedure, the fee is not refunded, even if your claim is successful.

In loving memory of our wonderful daughter Breda Walshe late of Bridgefield, Upper Lewis Road, Killarney, who died on 20th March 2023.

A golden heart stopped beating

Hard working hands at rest

God broke our hearts to prove to us

He only takes the best.

We often lie awake at night

When the world is fast asleep

And take a walk down memory lane

With tears upon our cheeks.

For no one knows the heartache

That lies beyond the smiles

No one knows how many times

We have broken down and cried.

You meant everything to us

A loving nature and a heart of gold

You were everything a daughter could be

One of the best this world could hold.

One gift in life you cannot buy

A gift so rare and true

Is the gift like the precious daughter

The gift we had in you.

Remembering you is easy

We do it every day

But missing you is a heartache

That never goes away.

No matter how life changes

No matter what we do

A special place within our hearts

Is always kept for you.

And the ache in our hearts will always remain.

Of all the special gifts in life

However great or small

To have you as our Sister

Was the greatest gift of all.

SUPERSTARS

Division One champs St Paul’s promoted to Super League

last week, so we were happy to live with limiting her a bit.”

Super League basketball is coming to Killarney following a dominant victory for Utility Trust St Paul’s over Swords Thunder in the National League Division One final in Dublin on Saturday.

Paul’s were nothing short of superb throughout the campaign and after topping the Southern Conference, seeing off Templeogue in the semi-final and then Swords in the decider, James Fleming’s side can look forward to dining at basketball’s top table when they reconvene for the 2024/25 season.

“It's great for the younger players in the

CELEBRATIONS:

club now to see the very best of Irish basketball next season,” Fleming told club PRO Enda Walshe. “It will be tough but it's exactly where you want to be.”

An MVP performance by American star Khiarica Rasheed was an important factor for the Kerry outfit. “We enjoyed the game,” Rasheed said. “We had a lot of fun out there the way we moved the ball and saw the shots go in.

“We were really homed in on Jensen Caretti and Jasmine Walker and we spent a lot of time in the paint trying to deny them. Jensen had a 40-point game

Fleming singled out Lorraine Scanlon for the role she played on the day, and he also heaped praise on the squad as a whole. “Lorraine limited Caretti and I thought she had a phenomenal game. We wore down Walker throughout by switching different players on her and that's difficult for any player to live with at this level. Sofia Paska was brilliant in the first quarter and Khiarica really deserved her MVP award.

“It really was a ‘win at all costs’ attitude the way they threw themselves at it. It's not about the eight or nine players rotating every week, it's about the likes of Liadh Tobin, Cliona Coffey, Aisling Counihan, Mary Kate Smith, Siobhán Burns,

Niamh Ní Chonchúir… And our unsung hero Meabh Barry who is the ultimate team player.”

Joint captains Rheanne O’Shea and Lynn Jones accepted the trophy on behalf of their teammates. “They were a tough Swords side,” Jones reflected. “It took everything we had in our arsenal to get there in the end. The scoreline maybe doesn’t reflect how tough it was. But we’re thrilled. Promotion secured. We’re delighted.”

ST PAUL’S: Sofia Paska (23 points), Khiarica Rasheed (18), Lorraine Scanlon (13), Rheanne O’Shea (6), Lynn Jones (5), Meabh Barry (4), Leah McMahon (2), Denise Dunlea, Niamh Ní Chonchúir, Cliona Coffey, Liadh Tobin, Siobhán Burns, Aisling Counihan, Síofra O’Shea.

Time to call it?

Kerry must figure out their priorities as league draws to a close

NATIONAL LEAGUE DIV 1

Roscommon v Kerry

Sunday 1.45pm

Dr Hyde Park | Live on TG4

Kerry are joint second in Division 1 of the National Football League with two very winnable games to go. Securing a place in the final is still achievable, if not straightforward.

However, speaking in the immediate aftermath of the Tyrone match a fortnight ago, Jack O’Connor didn’t exactly leave his audience with the impression that Kerry will be going all out for a top two finish.

“We’ll have a chat about how we go at the last two games, basically,” O’Connor said. “There are several different ways

you could go at it, but we’ll discuss that with the players and make a decision.”

The implication is that Kerry will look at the league table, weigh up their chances, consider all other factors at play, and potentially decide that the results of this weekend’s match against Roscommon and the final day fixture against Galway are not all that important. Perhaps management will decide that it would be better to use these opportunities to give minutes to players who are returning from injury, to reward squad players with game time, and to take a closer look at alternative options ahead of the serious business of the championship. In reality, although they are level on points with second place Dublin, it

seems a little unlikely that Kerry will qualify for the final even if they do win their final two games. Dublin play Galway away this weekend and they round out their regular league season with a home game against Tyrone. If they were to win both of those matches – and they will be firm favourites to do so – Dessie Farrell’s side will reach 10 points and they will trump Kerry on the head-tohead rule in the event of a tie.

OAK LEAF

Derry are currently on eight points with games against Mayo (who are also joint second - but by all accounts are not too keen on a final as they play in the Connacht Championship the week after) and Roscommon coming up in Rounds 6 and 7. One win should be enough for the Oak Leaf county to book their spot in the Croke Park decider. Like Dublin, they also hold the head-to-head advantage over Kerry.

Of course, the head-to-head rule doesn’t apply in the event of three-way tie. So, if, for example, Kerry were to finish up on 10 points alongside both Dublin and Derry, points difference will separate the teams. Derry and Dublin also hold the aces here as things stand: they’re both on +20 while Kerry are well behind on +3. Also thrown into the mix is the small matter of Kerry’s training camp in Por-

OTHER FIXTURES

tugal on March 26. The squad are set to spend a few days in Vilamoura the week of the league final, which takes place March 31. The manager has confirmed that the camp will be going ahead even if Kerry reach the final. Would such a camp be optimal preparation for a competitive match against a team like Derry or Dubin in Croke Park?

Naturally Kerry will be going out to win their games either way but all things considered it would not be surprising if O’Connor opted to give some minutes to players who haven’t seen much or any action this season. The likes of Shane Murphy, Stefan Okunbor, Paul Geaney, Barry Dan O’Sullivan and Darragh Roche could all use some minutes.

INJURIES

On the injury front, Tom O’Sullivan and Brian Ó Beaglaoich (both calf) are nearing a return and both would like to get back on the pitch as soon as possible. Cillian Burke and Dylan Geaney (both hamstring) are not expected to be in contention this weekend.

Unlike Kerry, Roscommon know exactly where they stand. They will need to win at least one of their remaining two games to have any chance of avoiding relegation. They have only picked up one victory so far this season – against bottom-of-the-table Monaghan – so they will need to find something special to turn things around at this stage. Elsewhere in Division 1, the most important match in Round 6 is between Ulster rivals Tyrone and Monaghan. After narrowly avoiding relegation several times over the years, Monaghan will finally fall through the trap door if they lose in Omagh on Saturday night.

Kerry’s long-standing

Eamonn Fitzgerald traces the roots of cricket in The Kingdom, going back to the days of the Cricket Field here in Killarney

Happy St Patrick's Day to all readers of this sports column. There is something special about sports beginning with the letter ‘c’. Immediately I think of canoeing, curling, CrossFit, climbing, cycling, camel racing, camogie, caid, and cricket. Let’s look at ‘cricket’. More about the other sports at some later dates.

Cricket has made a few rare enough appearances in these pages but it is the focus of this week’s column arising out of several queries I’ve had about how the Cricket Field in Killarney got its name. Just state the obvious: that is where cricket was played from the 1870s until the sport just faded away in Killarney for strong historical reasons. For the uninitiated, go to the end of Muckross Road and from the Flesk Bridge see what remains of the Cricket Field on the left bank of the Flesk River. It is still quite a sizeable green field, but much reduced with the expansion of housing in the Woodlawn area. A couple of weeks ago, the Irish Cricket team won their first ever test match by beating Afghanistan by six wickets in Abu Dhabi. That was a breakthrough because they had lost their first seven matches since they earned test status in 2017. Several countries claim that the game of cricket began in their land, but all the indicators are that England is the birthplace

of the game. Some form of it was played in the 1600s. Gradually it grew in other countries, especially where the British Empire held control. This led to the first test cricket match in 1877. Those tests are certainly a test of endurance as some can last up to five days.

The origin of cricket in Ireland is set in the history of its time, particularly in the 1800s when the native Irish peasants lived under the regime of the landed gentry who promoted the game of cricket and confined it mainly to their own class.

In O’Caithnia’s splendid work Scéal na hIomána (The Story of Hurling), he recalls: “In 1829 Crofton Croker walked down Flesk Road on a Sunday stroll with Killarney ADM Fr Edmund Fitzmaurice. They came upon a group of lads playing cruicéad na hÉireann (Cricket of Ireland).”

I expect that is the first recorded mention of cricket in Killarney. While cricket was quite common throughout Ireland and was an imported game for the English gentry, the County Kerry Cricket Club wasn’t formed until 1872, even though it was already played intermittently in some parts of the county.

Valentia Island was a case in point. Valentia Cricket Club played Tralee at the military barracks square in Ballymullen, Tralee. Later they played their games in

the local sportsfield (the present Austin Stack Park). Their colours were green and gold. Surprise, surprise. The Valentia team included the workers from Britain who came to the island to lay the famous Transatlantic Cable, all 3,500 miles of it, a remarkable feat of engineering at that time. After three attempts they succeeded in 1858. The company had a very active Valentia CC for the British workers. The locals were bemused at first, but in due course they also learned the basics of cricket.

KILLARNEY CC

The Killarney Cricket Club wasn’t founded until April 1887. There is a record of a match between Killarney CC and Major Henderson’s team played on the lawn opposite the Major’s posh residence in Glenflesk in the 1880s. Killarney CC also played two matches against the Middlesex Regiment stationed in Buttevant. Those games were played in 1888. There were also cricket teams in such unlikely places as Sneem, Ballylongford, Kenmare, Waterville, Cahersiveen, Milltown, Killorglin, Listowel, Tarbert, Causeway, Ballyheigue, Ardfert, Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West. However, they did not last too long in some of these areas.

The GAA was founded in 1884 and Dr

Crokes was founded in 1886. Patron of the new Killarney Cricket Club was Lord Kenmare who duly provided the Killarney Cricket Field on a nominal rent to promote the game. The Killarney CC team was very active and while cricket was the game of the gentry in Ireland, when their numbers dwindled in some locations some Irish tenants were included to make up a team. However, that was not widespread.

Anywhere the British were in the ascendancy they introduced the game of cricket. So, if there was a British garrison stationed you can be sure that cricket was played regularly. That was how soccer was also introduced to different parts of Ireland. Soccer was the sport of the garrison towns. A bonus for cricket was when the Trinity-educated well-to-do Irish graduates returning home. They played and supported cricket as a status symbol in society. The same can be said of rugby as it was played up to the 1960s. That has changed in current rugby circles.

Canon Tom Looney informed me that there is a strong cricket connection with his former parish of Kilcummin. It goes back to a ‘John Morphy’ from Ballinamanagh Kilcummin, who emigrated to Australia. Briefly, his daughter Florence Rose made the ‘Canberra News’ after Australia

72 15.3.2024
FIELD: The old Cricket Field, which was also used for football and rugby, as depicted by artist Niall O'Sullivan.

cricket connection

crushed England in 1882.

The Killarney Cricket Field also became the centre for Gaelic football where the local GAA games were played on the pitch leased from Lord Kenmare long before the Fitzgerald Stadium was built. It was also the venue for some stirring Kerry v Cork Munster finals and a venue for Killarney RFC.

Readers will recall the infamous Ban or Rule 27 of the GAA which forbade GAA members and players from playing foreign games (rugby, soccer, cricket, hockey). That was a big bone of contention right up until 1971 when it was abolished at the GAA Congress in Belfast. It became very much a cat-and-mouse game when spectators interested in those games had to avoid GAA personnel catching anyone breaking the Ban.

Ironically, Michael Cusack from Carron

in Clare was a well-known rugby player, starring with Trinity RFC. When he was teaching at Blackrock College, Dublin in the early 1870s he played cricket and when he set up his own school in 1877, he founded a rugby team with himself as secretary and trainer. Sevan years later he was a founding member of the GAA. Hence the stand in Croker.

Who can remember the spectators who viewed the local rugby match from the

Flesk Bridge?

Cricket is enjoying a revival and recently I viewed the beautiful new base for Kerry Cricket in Spa. No, not the famous football club in Killarney parish, but the Oyster Oval at The Spa, Tralee. Kerry CC won the Senior Munster Cup for the first time in its history in 2018 and were awarded the Munster Club of the Year for successes in the Munster Junior Cup and the Munster Junior T20s. Currently, they are playing in the above competitions and also in the Irish National Cup. No doubt the game has got a great boost with the increasing numbers of immigrants from countries where cricket is the national game. Will Cricket make an official comeback to Killarney? If so,

where will the games be played? Currently, who owns the Cricket Field? Níl fhios agam ach i ndeireadh na dála cricket in Kerry is on the up and up.

And so, back to the Killarney Cricket field off the Muckross Road, getting greener by the day. Wouldn’t the Bull McCabe have a field day claiming the famous field? The late great John B. Keane was so perceptive understanding the DNA of the Kerry psyche.

SPORT IN BRIEF

Cheltenham was centre stage this week.

Did you pick the winner for the Gold Cup?

Congrats to the Utility Trust St Paul’s basketball team who delivered a topclass display in the Division 1 league final at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght on Saturday. They put the Swords Thunder side to the sword with a whopping 23 points to spare. Well done to all concerned and further proof why Killarney’s James Fleming is one of the most sought-after coaches in basketball. Next season St Paul’s will be playing in the Super League.

The Killarney Cricket Field also became the centre for Gaelic football where the local GAA games were played on the pitch leased from Lord Kenmare

Meanwhile, the Irish bubble burst at Twickenham and it was well-deflated before that late drop kick. No Grand Slam but there is an early opportunity tomorrow (Saturday) to get back on track with the home game against Scotland which is scheduled to kick off at 4.45pm. Plenty of TV coverage for GAA patrons this weekend with 9 games on TV, including Kerry away to Roscommon on Sunday (TG 4). I expect Kerry to win that and conclude their league programme here in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday 24 March. Best of luck to Mercy Mounthawk in the Hogan Cup final.

Beauty from Okwute earns Kerry a point

A wonderful strike by Killarney man Daniel Okwute was enough to earn Kerry FC their first point of the 2023/24 season as they secured a draw away to Athlone Town last weekend.

Okwute gave the visitors the lead when he cut inside from the right and fired an unstoppable left-footed shot to the top left corner of the Athlone goal in the 55th minute. Unfortunately for Conor McCarthy’s side they were unable to hold on and pick up all three points as Dylan Hand equalised for Athlone in the 71st minute after Kerry failed to clear a corner. The home team had a couple of opportunities to win it down the stretch but Kerry held firm for a draw that lifts them off the foot of the First Division table.

Next up is a home match against Cobh Ramblers at 7.45pm tonight (Friday) in Tralee. Ramblers have won one, drawn one and lost one of their three league matches so far.

Of course, the sides met in the quarter-final of the Munster Senior Cup on February 5. Debutant Victor Udeze scored the all-important goal in a 1-0 win for the Kerry boys.

KERRY TEAM V ATHLONE: Antonio Tuta, Kevin Williams, Sam Aladesanusi, Andy Spain (C), Sean O’Connell, Daire McCarthy, Steven Healy, Sean McGrath, Kennedy Amechi, Ryan Kelliher, Daniel Okwute. Subs: Aaron O’Sullivan, Ethan Kos, Ronan Teahan, Cian Brosnan, Finn Barrett, Graham O’Reilly, Victor Udeze, Oisín Breen, Ferdia O’Brien.

Kingdom Warrior Kevin Cronin set for US debut

Kerry fighter Kevin Cronin will make his first appearance in an American boxing ring on Saturday night when he takes on Patrick Pierre in Dorchester in Boston.

The super middleweight from Milltown recently signed with Conlon Boxing and his first outing as part of the Conlon stable will see him take on veteran fighter Pierre, who is 41 years of age and has a record of five wins and 27 losses (17 by way of knockout).

The native New Yorker will bring plenty of experience with him but Cronin will

be confident of claiming the victory and improving his already impressive record of 6-1-1.

The match, which is expected to begin some time after midnight on Saturday night, will be streamed live on Cronin’s Facebook page.

Cronin has previously stated that it is his dream to stage a blockbuster fight at Killarney’s INEC by the end of 2024. This bout in Boston is the next step and the Kerryman will be hoping to navigate it with typical poise and professionalism.

Killarney Athletic

YOUTHS QUARTER-FINAL: Killarney

Athletic 4 Iveragh 2 AET. After 5 minutes in the second half a goal was given which all of our team would say was not a goal - however their shouts for justice that it was not a goal fell on deaf ears and a goal was allowed. We were under pressure from this and Iveragh played a fantastic defensive game and intercepted our play as much as they could. We were still in control but the cry from the sidelines suggested this could be a very unlucky game for our youths. With 10 minutes to go our linesman suggested pushing Hugh Dorian up from centre back to up front to John the incredible Luke Doolan to see could we level the game. A fantastic corner came with 6 minutes to go from Luke Doolan into the box where John O’Grady our incredible centre back struck the ball with his head with composure and confidence to blindside the goalie and score a cracker into top bins to score the equaliser. Definitely well-deserved and it was never going anywhere else but the back of the net. The boys were absolutely ecstatic and pushed forward, unlucky not to score in the dying minutes from Jake Nash, unstoppable in his runs. Extra time would normally mean a team with no subs are fatiguing but that was not the case for this team. They were poised and ready to push forward from tip off in extra time. Our midfield lead by Jack McCrohan with Evan Doona and Jake Casey were in control of the game and many passes were made but frustratingly it was not paying off. With 3 minutes to go in first half of ET Luke Doolan showed us his blistering pace and burst through midfield and made a very unselfish through ball to Oisin O’Sullivan who found the back of the net with beautiful accuracy. Iveragh showed their grit and determination and within 2 minutes their number 10 blasted a ball from the wing that unfortunately Caolan could do nothing about. It left us 2-2 at the end of the first half. Our back line were phenomenal and dominated play especially when it mattered most. John Murphy showed his speed and strength and ability to push forward for the entire game but be on the back line when he was needed. The new Denis Irwin he was been nicknamed. Bryan OConnor was outstanding in right back where no tackle was ever too much for him and his through balls outstanding. The second half started with pace and pressure. All to play for in the last ten minutes. David O’Brien crossed a great ball into Luke Doolan where he used his physicality and talent to find the back of the net. 3-2 to Athletic. Pressure was still on for both sides with them both knowing everything was still to play for. David O’Brien got the ball from a deadly accurate pass from Evan Doona, he took on the midfield and was almost assured

a goal, but the goalie took him out in the box and was lucky to get a yellow card. David placed the ball and banged it into the back of the net bottom bins. The ref blew up the whistle soon after and the win was secured to bring us through to the next round of the cup being the semi-final. You couldn’t pick a man of the match - it was definitely a well-deserved team victory lead by our captain Oisin O’Sullivan.

Killarney Legion GAA

EAST KERRY SUPER LEAGUE FINAL:

Our Senior Men captured the Division One East Kerry Super League title in an evenly contested game played in Glenflesk on Sunday afternoon. Will Shine opened the scoring with a point before Glenflesk hit back with two unanswered points. Cian Gammell replied to further scores from the home side as a period of dominance yielded minors from Peter McCarthy, Ryan O’Grady and Shaun

Keane. That saw the sides draw level, a trend that was continued in a tit for tat first half, leaving the teams side by side at half time, 0-7 each. Glenflesk assumed ascendancy early in the second half, before Shaun Keane set up Ryan O’Grady for the only goal of the game. Both sides exchanged points to leave the sides at parity as the hour drew to a close. In the 2nd minute of injury time Cian Gammell was fouled off the ball and Will Shine converted the free to leave the full-time score at 1-10 to 0-12. The James Fleming Cup was presented by members of the Fleming Family, Mike Pigott East Kerry Board and Geraldine Doran (Frank Doran Safeguard Security who sponsored the competition).

U17 BOYS: Last Friday evening, Direen played host to a very sporting manner as our U17 development group served up a great performance to better a very good Kenmare side who were having their first league game of the year. The defence and midfield were outstanding in their rearguard action but turnovers at the other end were keeping the game tight in a first half which finished 0-7 apiece. With the advantage of the breeze in the second half a small cushion was established, aided but the first goal of the game. Kenmare have some fine footballers and turned up the pressure eventually netting themselves to bring the sides neck and neck again. A few tactical adjustments in the final quarter yielded 2 goals which saw them home. To be fair to this group of players, they have trained hard in the worst of the weather and there is clear evidence of improvement in football and fitness across the board. Kenmare too have been itching for a game and showed their quality. Thanks to the referee who contributed to a great game and to supporters from both sides for encouragement. Killarney Legion 3-12 Kenmare 1-11. Our Division 1 team will have their next game this Wednesday, March 13th, followed by two games over the St Patricks weekend so plenty of minor action for the lads awaits.

KERI ANN HANRAHAN: Congratulations to Kerri Ann Hanrahan who lined out in midfield for the victorious UCC Lynch cup winning side.

Dr Crokes GAA

SHL: Dr. Crokes 0:08 Ballyduff 3:20. Our start to the 2024 County League was doused in a baptism of fire. Playing away to a very strong Ballyduff team, we were comprehensively beaten on the scoreboard which isn't a true and accurate reflection of the game. Featuring a number of debutants to Senior Hurling, we traded parity with the hosts in the first half and competed equally for possession. While Ballyduff did assert themselves as the half wore on, only four points separated the teams at the interval. On the resumption, Ballyduff went straight for the jugular with a brilliantly taken goal, coming after only 60 seconds. Reeling from Ballyduff's restart we shipped a succession of scores, including another superbly taken goal by one of Kerry's U20 stars. We refused to give up and every player battled vigorously and determinedly for every ball. As is often the case in hurling encounters, it was only in the last 10 minutes that the gap broadened into a chasm, and it has to be said that the home team played brilliant a brand of fast, direct hurling. Featuring six U20 Kerry players, this is certainly a team to watch out for in the future. Our boys can take encouragement and heart from the spirit shown by the players and the marksmanship of Mark Heffernan

MINOR COUNTY LEAGUE: Our minor was defeated by a very strong Knock/ Brosna outfit on Sunday afternoon. Fossa started well, Ronan Bennett scored a cracking goal after 8 minutes to put them ahead. It was nip and tuck after that, Knock/Brosna hit back for a goal in the 24th minute but points from Shay McCormick and Dylan O’Meara kept Fossa in touch but they were trailing by two points at the break, 1-07 to 1-05. In the second half, given that it was 13-a-side, it meant that there was plenty of space and Knock/Brosna’s strength started to show and they gradually pulled away with two well taken goals. Fossa, to their credit, never gave up. Derek O’Gorman defended magnificently all day, Jack Hallissey had to sacrifice his normal attacking role to man mark the Knock/ Brosna danger man, Conor Cahill, but they just could not break down a resolute opposition defence and try as they might, they couldn’t get the goal that was needed to get them back into this game. Final score, Knock/Brosna, 3-12, Fossa, 1-09. Team; Darragh Whelton, Luke McCann, Ryan Brady, Jack Spillane, Derek O’Gorman, Fionn Doyle, Conor O’Mahony, Jack Hallissey, David Butler, Sam Clerkin, Dylan O’Meara (0-06), Cathal Breen, Ronan Bennett (1-02), Mikey Moroney, Shay McCormick (0-01), Harry O’Connor, Morgan O’Brien.
