Construction on Rock Road for three months

Kerry County Council will commence construction works on new footpaths and cycle lanes on Monday.

The works form part of the overall footpath and cycle lane improvements on Rock Road between the Cleeny Roundabout and the bus and car park on Rock Road.

Specific traffic management systems will be in place to facilitate the construction of these works.

A one-way system will be in place on Rock Road for the duration of these works. Entry to Rock Road from Cleeny roundabout will be prohibited from 8:00am to 6:30pm daily on weekdays from Wednesday, April 24

Diversion signage will be in place directing traffic via the Bypass to Lewis Road for traffic going into the town centre and

via Hans Liebherr Road to St Margaret’s Road and New Road for Rock Road.

All residents and business on Rock Road will be contacted in advance of construction works.

“Every effort will be made to keep the disruption to the absolute minimum, however it should be noted that there may be some delays. The works are expected to be complete in three months,” said a council statement.

“Kerry County Council are continuing to enhance the public infrastructure in Killarney and wishes to thank members of the public in advance for their patience and cooperation during these essential works.”

Sixth person charged in Thomas Dooley murder case

A sixth person has been charged in relation to the murder of a Killarney man in Tralee in October 2022.

Thomas Dooley from Hazelwood Drive died in an attack at Rath Graveyard in Tralee when attending a family funeral. His wife Siobhan was also seriously injured in the same attack.

Several people have been arrested and this week’s latest development brings the total charged in relation to the murder to six people.

As part of the ongoing investigation into the fatal assault in Rathass Cemetery, Tralee, Co. Kerry on the 5th October 2022, Gardaí on Thursday, 18th April 2024, arrested a man aged in his 40s,” said a Garda statement.

“He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in Co. Kerry. He has been charged and will appear before a special sitting of Listowel District Court this morning, at 10:30am, Thursday 18th April 2024.

“This is the sixth person to be charged in connection with this fatal assault.”

Kerry v Cork match day

Kerry take on Cork in the first round of the Munster Championship at Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday.

This glamour tie always attracts a huge crowd and Cork fans will travel in their droves from the Rebel County. As a result there will be parking restrictions and traffic disruptions in the town on Saturday afternoon.

“Please be aware that the town will be bustling with activity, and traffic congestion is expected. Some parking

areas may reach capacity, so we recommend allowing extra time for your journey,” said a Garda spokesperson.

Parking will be available in the following areas near the stadium: New Street, The Glebe car park, Fair Hill car park, High Street, Rock Road car park and the Lewis Road car park.

Parking in the vicinity of Fitzgerald Stadium is reserved for residents with parking passes only.

Plans revealed for 249-unit Cronin’s Wood development

The first drawings of a proposed 249-unit housing development in Killarney have been revealed.

The development will be the largest Large-Scale Residential Development (LRD) to be granted planning permission by Kerry County Council since the scheme's inception in 2021.

Meitheal Architects, an award-winning architecture and urban design practice, secured planning approval at the Cronin's Wood brownfield site near Killarney town centre.

Spanning 7.9 hectares, the development will provide 249 homes, comprising a mix of dwelling houses and maisonettes ranging from one to five bedrooms. This mixture provides for a diverse variety of

living arrangements and ensures future adaptability.

“We are thrilled to have secured planning permission for this much needed development. This is the result of a huge amount of work and collaboration between designers, developers, and Kerry County Council,” said Patrick O Toole, Managing Director, Meitheal Architects .

“This project exemplifies our commitment to creating sustainable, community-oriented spaces that enhance quality of life. We look forward to collaborating with stakeholders to bring this vision to fruition."

Win tickets for Taylor Swift and support Palestine

Killarney For Palestine is raffling two tickets to a Taylor Swift concert in Edinburgh.

The group is raising funds for the Halaq family who are known to Kerry Friends of Palestine and who are currently displaced in tents in the Gaza Strip. Their homes were destroyed in the city of Khan Younis by Israeli airstrikes.

“It currently costs between €5,000 and €6,000 per person to be evacuated from Gaza,” said Susan Larkin of Killarney For Palestine.

To be in with a chance of winning the tickets for the June 8 concert all you have to

do is make a donation via the gofundme link below. A minimum €5.00 donation ensures entry to the draw which will be made on April 24.

Help needed to find owner of jewellery found in Fossa

A Killarney resident is trying to find the owner of a designer ring that she found outside her house a few months ago.

Kristy Nicholas, pictured below, found the ring on a footpath in the Lackabane Estate in Fossa on December 29 last. Since then she has exhausted all channels in an effort to find the owner including regular contact with the Gardai and local word of mouth.

“Since that time I worked to find the owner through word of mouth and by filing a report with Gardai. Since I've been unsuccessful,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “The owner could ring the Killarney Gardai station and provide details to be connected with me. To be reunited a description will be needed, such as the brand and designer and type of ring. It's quite an expensive ring so I'm really hoping to get it back to the right place.”

Kristy can be contacted on 087 3443500

Legion GAA club’s golf classic launched

Legion GAA’s club Annual Golf Classic will take place on May 3.

The popular event is run to raise funds for the club’s training and playing facilities.

“What an opportunity to play on one of Ireland’s most picturesque courses, the famed but equally fair O’Mahony’s Point where you will still enjoy the track regardless of your skill level,” said club organiser Sean Murphy.

“We are committed to providing our members and the broader Killarney community with the best facilities possible to enhance their health and wellbeing.

“Every week, hundreds of families use the facilities in the Club and over the past few years, these facilities have been upgraded substantially including excellent floodlighting, upgrading and resurfacing of our two main pitches and installation of a third smaller training

pitch as well as upgrading of gym facilities to incorporate all ages and sections of the Club.”

Entry fee for a team of three costs €300 Euro and a tee box can be sponsored for €100.

We are delighted also to welcome the Gleneagle Hotel and Apartments as the main sponsor of our Classic and we are very grateful to Patrick and the O Donoghue Family for their marvellous support.

Lack of street parking in Killarney

Outdoor dining areas that are not being used for that purpose should to parking bays according to Cllr Martin Grady.

The widening of footpaths stems back to the pandemic when social distancing was part of daily life.

Forced by pandemic regulations, outdoor dining became normal after lockdowns and the widened footpaths were used for seating a tables. However, not every widened footpath is being currently used for such purposes at a time when parking is at a premium in the town centre.

“Street parking is something that’s lacking and locals and businesses are suffer-

ing as a result,” said Grady, “ We need more 15 minutes spaces, disabled spaces, bus parking and loading bays. It’s a complete waste of ground. Everyone will benefit from this.”

Fitzgerald Stadium to become a boxing venue?

Fitzgerald Stadium could become a venue for international boxing tournaments. Former Olympian and current boxing promoter Michael Conlan was in Kerry this week.

He and his brother Jamie run promotion company Conlan Boxing and they are linked with local fighter Kevin Cronin.

Conlan visited Fitzgerald Stadium with a view to hosting major tournament there in the future.

The plan would be to create a temporary arena, with a capacity of around 6,000 spectators in the training pitch.

Cronin was been signed by Conlan Boxing an January this year.

He became the first ever fighter to be managed by Conlan.

He has an impressive professional record of 6-1-1, but has experienced a difficult period of late with a number of fights being cancelled at the last minute through no fault of his own.

It is hoped that teaming up with Conlan will open new doors for the super middleweight from Milltown, who always astated he wanted to bring top-level boxing to Ireland.

“We have some exciting plans for the year ahead and I look forward to [Conlan Boxing] guiding me to the top of the game,” Cronin said. Cronin’s participation in the 2023 Irish Boxing Awards Domestic Fight of the Year (against Jamie Morrissey) is thought to have encouraged Conlan to sign the Kerry boxer to his roster.

Social media regulations like the “Wild West” – Cllr John O’Donoghue

O’Donoghue, who is also a teacher, said: “This is also particularly relevant in the case of younger people, who can create accounts by falsifying their ages far too easily resulting in them being exposed to unsuitable, and in some cases harmful, content.”

A study from March of this year shows that 50% of children aged between 10 and 12 years of age have been exposed to harmful content online, be it content that is sexual, violent, promoting body issues or bullying.

“Reports of online abuse are becoming all too common and it appears that from a regulatory perspective, social media in particular is being run like a modern day Wild West with little, if any, attempts to control both what is being said and who is saying it. I am a firm believer, within reasonable limits, of the right to free speech, but I have a major issue with people being able to hide behind anonymous usernames while saying what they like.

“While this is bad enough for those subjected to online abuse, my main concern is that it is all too easy for young people to create online accounts the companies themselves say are for people older than them by falsifying their age upon creating the account.

“These platforms, which make billions of euros each year, are currently paying little more than lip service to the issue, and I feel the Government should threaten them with blocking their platforms if they do not get their act together. The only metric they are concerned with is how many users they have and the level of engagement they receive and I feel that were the Government to get tough with them, we would see them sort the issue out very quickly. “

SENSORY PLAYGROUNDS

O’Donoghue is also calling for the council to would, where requested, support any groups in our towns and villages wishing

“As a teacher I have seen at first hand both the positive and the negative when it comes to young people and Social Media. I consulted a member of the legal profession to see what, if any issues they had encountered in their profession. The following are the issues they have had people contact them regarding: Child grooming, Catfish and revenge porn, Defamation of character, Bullying of a minor, sale and supply of drugs and other crimes, phishing scams and scam sales. This person I consulted is not a character in a Netflix series but a solicitor working here in County Kerry. The list of issues is horrendous and it is simply unacceptable. It is high time that the Government imposed stricter guidelines on the social media companies.

to set up sensory areas in our playgrounds under any suitable funding mechanisms that become available. This would serve the colossal benefit of making our public amenities more accessible to all. He added: Accessibility to all aspects of society is a major issue for some and I feel we as a Council should lead the way in doing all we can to ensure all citizens of our State have equal rights. I am very fortunate to be a small part of a wonderful group working to make Killarney Autism Friendly to ensure those with additional sensory needs are catered for in our town. Many towns around the country have sensory areas in their playgrounds, and I am aware of the good work done here in Tralee by some of my colleagues here in the Town Park in this respect. The

reports from these Towns with sensory areas in their playgrounds from the users is one of gratitude that their child can access the areas like all the other children. No child in this State should ever have to feel grateful for simply being facilitated to access the same level of care or services as their peers, but the point still stands in that it shows the importance of what great things can be achieved by relatively small steps on our part. I ask that the Council would look favourably upon any request for assistance, be it financial or otherwise, if any groups come to them looking for it. Bunreacht na hÉireann details the rights of each child in the State to non-discrimination and we must do all we can to facilitate this noble ideal.

Cycling club mentoring programme launched

Killarney Cycling Club will begin its mentoring programme on Tuesday April 30.

The aim of the programme is to provide adults with an opportunity to gain skills and the experience of cycling as a group on the open road in a safer and enjoyable environment.

“If you are interested in developing your cycling but don’t feel ready to turn up on a Sunday morning for the club weekly spins this is an excellent opportunity to get started,” said a club statement.

“We are in the very fortunate position of having a club room since 2023 so the first two nights will be inside on static bikes looking at your position on the bike, gears and general good practice when road cycling. This will be followed by eight evenings on the road and participants will go from 20km to 70km with the guidance of experienced club members.”

The programme will begin at 6.45pm in the club house based in St Mary’s Parish Hall, V93HX44, on April 30.

Retiring Garda Sergeant began career in Killarney

Antoinette Cunningham, who retired last week from An Garda Síochána and the Association of Garda Sergeant’s and Inspector’s as their General Secretary, started her career 33 years ago in Killarney.

Sergeant In charge at Killarney Garda Station Dermot O’Connell paid tribute to her achievements and her unrelenting commitment to improving the policing environment.

As a former Chairman, Secretary and delegate of the Kerry Branch, Sergeant Dermot O’Connell worked closely with Antoinette in AGSI for many years/ “Her support for members of the Association was second to none. Antoinette always pursued what was right and just. Her ability, knowledge and professionalism was acknowledged both internally and externally by other representative bodies and also professional bodies,” he said.

“When Antoinette arrived here at her first station, the late Jack McGrath was the Sergeant In Charge.”

“As many know Sergeant Jack McGrath frequently walked the beat. During this time Jack shared much of his experience with Antoinette who proved her ability as a competent Garda to Sergeant Jack

McGrath. “

“Jack was very impressed by her ability, even at that early stage. He always spoke highly of Antoinette and followed her career path with great interest.”

Antoinette subsequently transferred to Limerick (Roxboro Road and Mayorstone Garda Stations). As a Sergeant she moved to the Garda College and completed a Master’s Degree in Adult Learning and a BA in Training and Education.

In 2021 Antoinette was honoured by University Galway with an Alumni Award for her significant contribution in the field of policing.

She became the first female member to serve with the Association of Sergeants and Inspectors at Branch level, National Executive level, President, Deputy General Secretary and finally General Secretary.

“On behalf of the Kerry Branch of AGSI I wish Antoinette the very best in whatever the future holds for her and her family,” added Sergeant O’Connell.

Incoming President Anne Hannan and outgoing Chapter President Tony Dunne presented a cheque to fellow member Mairead O’Sullivan, Deputy Manager of the Killorglin Family Resource Centre.

BNI Killarney Chapter’s donation to Killorglin Family Resource Centre

The Killarney Branch Business Networking International made a donation of €4288 to Killorglin Family Resource Centre.

The funds were raised during BNI Killarney Chapter’s Awards night and Charity Ball November.

Outgoing Chapter President Tony Dunne and incoming President Anne Hannan presented the cheque to fellow member Mairead O’Sullivan, Deputy Manager of the Killorglin Family Resource Centre.

“The money received from the BNI will help greatly with the increasing need for

therapies for children and adolescents. Young people are experiencing anxiety and stress in numbers like never before and the KFRC offers a number of therapies including play therapy and art therapy, and caters to those who self-refer and are referred through schools and partner agencies,” said Mairead.

“Our Management would like to thank those in the Killarney Chapter of BNI for awarding the Centre the charity seat and for the warm welcome and to all those in BNI who helped raise these much needed funds.”

Finally, the KC Print team were also nominated for their work on the Newbridge Silver Catalogue in two categories. The team have worked with this client for many years producing its highend catalogues.

The project also involved another Killar-

Thousands of volunteers take part in 12th Annual County Clean-Up

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jim Finucane has thanked the thousands of volunteers who took part in the County Clean-Up across Kerry over the past week.

Bags of litters were collected from the roadsides and towns and villages during the twelfth annual clean-up which was organised by KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council.

“This was another fantastic turnout for the County Clean-Up and shows how civic-minded many of our citizens are when it comes to keeping the county neat and tidy.

“‘Storm Kathleen’ on Saturday 6 meant that arrangements had to be adjusted a little bit but over the course of the past week, there was a major effort from Tidy Towns groups and local volunteers who

put the shoulder to the wheel,’ he said. ‘It would be great to harness the involvement of members of the public this past week by getting more people to sign up with their local Tidy Towns group or start a group in their own area and to get people out and about collecting litter more often.’

Cllr Finucane thanked KWD Recycling and their team for helping to distribute gloves and bags ahead of the Clean-Up and for arranging to dispose of the bags of rubbish collected. He particularly acknowledged the way in which the planned collection times for litter were readjusted because of the storm. Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling said they were delighted with the turnout and the positive attitude of all the participants. He thanked and congratulated local volunteer groups for their involvement.

SMALL TOWN, BIG IMPACT Wander Wild grabs the spotlight

Pat Chawke reflects on positive national exposure the festival generated for the town.

The 2024 Wander Wild Festival has left a trail of joy, adventure, and a lingering economic boost for our vibrant town. This celebration of nature, adventure, and community has not only captivated locals and visitors alike but has also proven to be a fantastic promotional platform nationally and internationally for Killarney town thanks to the incredible media coverage secured, key influencer engagement, and social media promotion.

When we established the festival three years ago our primary goal was to showcase Killarney as the outdoors capital of Ireland. We are uniquely blessed to have such fantastic natural resources right on our doorstep. We want to show people that Killarney town, the Reeks and the surrounding UNESCO National Park are a nirvana for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure seekers - highlighting our town's status as a premier destination for eco-tourism and outdoor recreation.

Throughout the festival, attendees were treated to a diverse range of activities on the lakes and mountains, in the park,

in our wellness hub and various venues around town. These experiences not only provided participants with unforgettable memories but also showcased Killarney's rich biodiversity and stunning natural resources, but also the importance of the National Park and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and community conservation efforts in preserving it. Moreover, the Wander Wild Festival acted as a catalyst for economic growth and vitality in Killarney Town. This year we worked hard on enhancing the evening programme and local businesses experienced increased footfall as festival-goers explored the town, attended evening festival events, dined out, and browsed our local shops. Accommodation providers reported very high occupancy rates, further bolstering the tourism sector in the off-season and contributing to the town's prosperity.

The success of the Wander Wild Festival in promoting Killarney Town underscores the symbiotic relationship between tourism and our community. We have significantly grown our social media audience and engage with them

throughout the year. We have grown our Instagram following by 60% since January alone, with our following now bigger than many national festivals that have been running for decades longer. ETC PR Agency, based in Killarney and Cork, managed the PR and advertising for the festival and we were delighted with the fantastic coverage. A key highlight was a 3-page spread in the Irish Times magazine in advance of the festival, with really positive messaging about the town and our offerings.

The outrageous quality of the online marketing produced by our committee and the images and experiences that they send out to the world will deliver soft and hard adventurers to Killarney throughout the year. That’s the Wander Wild tail.

We would like to express our gratitude to the People of Killarney, our Sponsors, the Local Authority, the NPWS, Fáilte Ireland, local businesses and partners, activity providers, volunteers, and attendees for their unwavering support and enthusiasm.

We invited key travel media and influencers both in advance of the festival and to the festival to experience the activities and the hospitality. They were full of awe and praise of all aspects, from the quality of guides and activities, the genuine passion and respect of everyone they met for the National Park, the hospitality, and the sustainable focus of the town. Dublin hotel price surge for Europa League Final

Dublin is gearing up for a major European football event - the Europa League Final on May 22nd, 2024. However, fans hoping to snag a hotel room alongside their match tickets might be in for a shock.

According to booking platforms like Booking.com, hotel prices in Dublin and the surrounding areas have witnessed a staggering increase. Properties typically known for affordability are now sporting inflated rates, with some list-

ings showing a mind-blowing 600% jump.

A two-bedroom apartment in Temple Bar, normally €950 for two nights midweek, is now €6,098 for the nights of May 21st-23rd - a staggering 542% increase. Even smaller accommodations haven't been spared. A double room in a one-bedroom Temple Bar apartment, usually €785 for two nights, is listed at €1,851 for the same period - a 135% rise. Hostels haven't escaped the price surge either. An eight-bed dorm room

in Smithfield, typically costing €668 for two nights, has been marked up to a hefty €4,563 for the Europa League final dates - a rise of 583%.

With these significant price hikes, fans hoping to attend the final should be prepared to spend a significant sum on accommodation. Those on a tighter budget might want to consider alternative options like AirBnB or staying outside the city centre, with good public transport connections to the Aviva Stadium.

Gigantic sea monster unearthed by amateurs

An incredible discovery by fossil enthusiasts has unearthed a piece of prehistoric history. The fossilized jawbone of a gargantuan marine reptile, believed to be one of the largest ever, was identified thanks to keen-eyed amateurs and paleontological expertise.

The story begins on the shores of Somerset, England, in 2016. A fossil hunter spotted a remarkable chunk of bone on the beach at Blue Anchor. Upon closer inspection, experts at the University of Manchester confirmed it belonged to a giant ichthyosaur, a marine reptile that dominated the oceans millions of years ago.

The plot thickened in 2020 when a father and daughter stumbled upon another, very similar, jawbone fragment on the same beach. It was this second piece provided crucial evidence for the researchers.

JP McManus’ philanthropy continues with €30m Amenity Donation

Philanthropist JP McManus and his family have delivered a major win for Limerick with the announcement of a €30 million gift to the Limerick City and County Council. This generous donation will see the hugely popular International Rugby Experience (IRE) become a permanent fixture in the city.

The IRE is a state-of-the-art, 30,000 square foot interactive experience that

celebrates the world of rugby. Designed to engage and inspire visitors of all ages, it offers a fully immersive and multi-sensory journey through the sport.

This €30 million investment by the JP McManus Charitable Foundation initially funded the IRE's creation. Now, Limerick City and County Council will assume ownership and operation after a due diligence process.

The IRE's addition to Limerick's existing tourist attractions, like King John's Castle

and the Limerick Greenway, is a boon for the city's tourism industry. Deputy Chief Executive of the Council, Gordon Daly, emphasized the exciting opportunity this presents to develop stronger tourism synergies and promotions.

By comparing the size and shape of the fossils to known ichthyosaurs, the team determined these belonged to a previously undescribed species. Christened Ichthyotitan severnensis, meaning "giant fish lizard of the Severn" (referencing the nearby River Severn), the creature is estimated to have reached a staggering length of 72 to 85 feet (22 to 26 meters) - longer than two double-decker buses! Dating back roughly 200 million years, Ichthyotitan severnensis swam the seas during the Triassic period. This discovery is particularly significant because it falls right before a major extinction event. "They were quite literally the last giants," says Dean Lomax, lead researcher on the project. Following this period, no ichthyosaurs reached close to this size again.

Irish Ranger Wing to Bolster UNIFIL presence in Lebanon

Ireland's elite Ranger Wing is set to deploy additional troops to southern Lebanon, bolstering the Irish contingent within the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

This follows discussions between the Irish government and the UN regarding the ongoing need for peacekeeping efforts in the region.

The government has decided to send the 33 soldiers with the 124th Infantry Battalion – which deploys next month to replace the 123rd that has been in Lebanon since November.

The 33 extra soldiers are forming what’s called a Force Protection Platoon – and

will be tasked with providing increased security for the entire battalion.

Ireland has a rich history of contributing to UNIFIL, with the first Irish troops arriving in 1978. The Rangers will join the existing Irish Defence Forces personnel already stationed in Lebanon, known for their professionalism and dedication to maintaining peace in the region.

The deployment comes at a time of heightened regional tensions. The Lebanese government faces ongoing economic challenges, while the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and heightened tensions between Israel and Iran will make the mission extremely challenging for peacekeepers.

Social Media up in arms over Rishi's shoe choice

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was shredded on social media by users and fashion watchers alike for his Adidas Samba look during a recent interview at 10 Downing Street.

People were upset with Sunak's footwear choice and asserted that "he had ruined it for everyone".

During the interview in which Sunak was promoting his government's tax policies, the UK leader was seen wearing the grey, white and black sneakers of the wellknown sportswear brand, paired with a

white shirt, navy chinos and black socks. After facing online backlash, Sunak issued a "fullsome apology" and said he had been a "long-time devotee" of Adidas for "many years".

Speaking on LBC Radio, Sunak said, "I issue a fullsome apology to the Samba community. But, in my defence, I would say I have been wearing Adidas trainers including Sambas for many, many years."

British GQ magazine said that "in a bid to present himself as young and hip, Rishi Sunak took an eternally cool sneaker and ruined it for everyone".

STARDUST FIRE INQUEST: Jury Finds Unlawful Killing

A Dublin jury yesterday (April 18) delivered a verdict of unlawful killing in the inquest into the Stardust nightclub fire of 1981. The tragedy, which claimed the lives of 48 young people, has haunted Ireland for decades.

The inquest, which reopened in 2009, aimed to establish the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the deaths. After extensive deliberations, the jury reached a landmark conclusion. Their verdict highlights the failures that contributed to the devastating loss of life.

Five men and seven women considered more than 90 days of evidence and testimony from well over 350 witnesses into the deaths of 48 people. While the verdict brings a measure of closure to the families of the victims, questions remain. The cause of the fire has not been definitively determined, and accounta-

bility for the events of that night is still being sought.

The inquest's findings are expected to reignite calls for a full public inquiry into the Stardust disaster. Campaigners, many of whom are direct relatives to the victims, believe a deeper investigation is necessary to uncover the truth and ensure such a tragedy never happens again.

Taoiseach Simon Harris released a statement following the verdicts, “The Government will consider this verdict in full and the recommendations of the jury. I want to acknowledge and thank the coroner, and her team and the jurors. Paying tribute to the family Harris added “48 young people never came home that night, but as Taoiseach I want to say this to their families; You never gave up on justice for them, you never let Ireland forget about them. They were never alone, and our country owes you a great debt for that.”

Taxi's down in 23 counties but Kerry bucks the trend

There's a growing concern about access to essential transportation in Ireland, particularly in rural areas. New figures from the National Transport Authority (NTA) reveal a significant decline in taxi availability across the country.

The report shows that the number of taxi licenses in operation has dropped in a staggering 23 out of 26 counties since 2019. This translates to a nationwide decrease of 1,033 taxis, with the total number falling from 27,393 to 26,360.

The border region has been hit the hardest, experiencing a 14.5% decline

in taxi licenses. County Monaghan faces the most drastic situation, with a staggering 26.5% drop - a reduction from 147 licenses in 2019 to just 108 last year. Other counties like Cork, Waterford, Clare, and Tipperary have also seen significant drops, ranging from 4.43% to 7.09%.

The counties bucking the trend including Dublin, which saw an increase of just under 1%, in Limerick numbers rose by almost 7% while here in Kerry they were more than 3% higher.

The Coalition is urging the NTA and the government to take action. They propose a 30% increase in taxi availability by 2027 to address the growing need.

Economic Impact of 10 years of the Wild Atlantic Way

Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin and Fáilte Ireland, in conjunction with Tourism Ireland, marked the 10th anniversary of the Wild Atlantic Way at Meitheal, the largest and most important trade event for the Irish tourism industry.

The Wild Atlantic Way, the hugely successful tourism brand developed by Fáilte Ireland in response to the global financial crash, was launched to the tourism industry at Meitheal in 2014, and over the last decade has become a globally recognised tourism brand and has provided an economic engine for the west of Ireland. According to a new report launched today, nearly 2 million

more visitors visited the Wild Atlantic Way in 2023 compared with 2013.

Tourism is now worth €3billion per year on the Wild Atlantic Way, an increase of 59% on 2013, and this growth has contributed to the creation of an additional 35,000 jobs, with tourism now supporting 121,000 jobs across the region.

Speaking at Meitheal, Catherine Martin TD, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts,

Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, said:

“This year, Meitheal is particularly special as we mark the 10th anniversary of the Wild Atlantic Way. Ten years ago, a vision for the future of tourism in Ireland was launched, a route that stretched for 2,500 kilometres along our rugged Atlantic Coast. This is now a household name and cements Ireland’s reputation as a must-visit tourism destination, and I commend Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland on their work in driving this success over the last 10 years.”

“For a small island, we have a huge amount to offer from world-class

Kerry World Rally Championship bid lost due to lack of funding

An opportunity for Kerry to host a round of the World Rally Championship has been lost due to the unavailability of government funding.

A local bid team that included former World Rally Championship co-driver Paul Nagle put forward an extensive proposition to Motorsport Ireland late last year. The local team put forward the North Campus of MTU Kerry in Tralee as the event’s main hub and that Killarney would host the fan zone.

It was confirmed by Motorsport Ireland in January that three locations, Tralee, Waterford and Limerick, would each host the event on a rotation basis between 2025 and 2027 if government funding was put in place. The promoters of the World Rally Championship set a deadline of midMarch to secure the funding so they could finalise the championship calendar. That deadline was pushed forward to Monday this week as the FIA World Council meets this week where a provisional 2025 calendar would be discussed.

With the funding not forthcoming by Monday evening, Motorsport Ireland issued a statement stating that Motorsport Ireland first approached the Government

back in early 2023 and in June of that year had a fruitful meeting with Minister Thomas Byrne and his colleagues where they presented how we can showcase Ireland on the world stage by bringing the World Rally Championship to Ireland for a three-year period.

In the meeting Motorsport Ireland were complimented by Minister Byrne that they were doing the right thing by coming good and early with respect to a funding request for a 2025 event.

“After the meeting we were referred to the Major Sports Events Unit whom we engaged with and submitted a full event screening application on October 6 2023,” said Motorsport Ireland president

Aiden Harper.

“To date, Motorsport Ireland have received no questions or feedback on any of the documents we submitted, despite multiple communications to the Department asking if additional information was required. To learn on the last day of our extension from the promoter that Minister Byrne’s Department now require another six months to undertake further independent assessments and analysis is very frustrating.

“From the beginning Motorsport Ireland have been very clear that March 2024 was the cutoff for receiving acknowledgment if we were successful or not in our request for funding. This deadline wasn’t

chosen by Motorsport Ireland, this was an operational deadline set by the World Rally Championship promoter. The demand for the limited number of slots in the WRC calendar is running at an all-time high and the promoter is in a position to choose host countries that are able to commit and thus benefit from a multi-year major event strategy. The promoter cut-off date must be respected so that they can plan their 2025-2027 calendar.”

Despite Motorsport Ireland’s early application the department said it needed more time to evaluate the bid paperwork. “It is important to note that a Government decision is needed in order to approve the allocation of the significant resources required for hosting major sports event, like the World Rally Championship, including in areas such as security, transport and other logistics. It should also be noted that any decision by Government to provide funding to support the hosting of major sporting events needs to be underpinned by an independent economic analysis and business case,” said Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

“In light of the need for more detailed assessment and further information and given that Motorsport Ireland proposes to host the World Rally Championship in a relatively short time, the Department is unable to commit to public monies towards supporting an event starting in 2025, given the need for further and thorough assessment.”

KCC students go to driving school

Last week, Killarney Community College TY students and 5LCAs spent the day in the sun, in Munster driving school Mallow, learning to drive, practicing the theory test and learning through hands on activities of the dangers of drink driving and speeding on our roads. Since 2019, people aged between 16 and 25 represent about 20% of all road deaths, despite making up just 12% of the population. Last year, over a quarter of all road fatalities were in that age group.

And it appears to be getting worse. Of the 61 people that have died on our roads in 2024 so far, a third were 25 years old or younger. The statistics show that young males remain the group most likely to be involved in a fatal collision. The students were very engaged and shocked at the info presented to them. It also gave them hands on experience and for many it was their first time behind the wheel of a car. Hopefully it helped foster safer drivers for the future.

'Soak the Teacher'

A ‘Soak the Teacher’ fundraiser event in aid of Eddie Sheehy's charity ‘The Kenya Education Project’ was held by the 2Red CSPE class in St. Brigid's recently. Mr Sheehy is a former member of staff in St. Brigid's and retains a strong connection with the school in which he was an esteemed teacher and guidance counsellor for many years. Laughter, wild excitement and water sponges filled the air, all in good spirit and for a very good cause. The longest lunchbreak ever was faced

by the brave volunteers from the management and staff, as they endured being pelted with various water-soaked missiles by the delighted students.

A day that will be remembered by all long after the schoolbooks are put away. 2Red CSPE class would like to thank everyone for their generosity and support, which raised the amazing sum of €771 for the charity.

Special thanks also to Ms A Quilter for assisting the students in organising the event.

On Friday 12th the book launch for 'Futures from the Past' took place in St Brendan's. The book was a result of a collaboration between the school's Writer in Residence students and a group of Active Retired writers in Tralee, both guided by poet Noel King. Sales of the resulting publication will go to support the great work being done by Kerry Hospice. The book is currently available for sale from St Brendan's at €9. Thanks to Poetry Ireland and the Arts Office of Kerry County Council for their support.

Kerry hope to start as they mean to go on

Kingdom welcome fierce rivals Cork to Killarney

MUNSTER SFC SEMI-FINAL

Kerry v Cork

Saturday at 4pm

Fitzgerald Stadium

Live on GAAGO

Summer still feels like a faraway dream given the dreary weather we’ve had lately but perhaps we might get just a little taste when old foes renew acquaintances in Killarney on Saturday. Yes, Kerry versus Cork has lost a lot of its sparkle. The good old days of sundrenched battles in the Park or in the Páirc are a distant memory; the new split season means no more Munster semi-finals and finals at the height of the summer. The green and gold against the blood and bandages is now very much a spring affair.

Roving ice cream vendors used to make a

fortune on matchday, striding up and down the slopes of the terrace, doling out Icebergers to the sweltering masses. This weekend, they would be better served peddling waterproof ponchos. Gone, too, is the air of unpredictability around the on-field action. Kerry have dominated the fixture for over a decade and they are eight-point favourites for this next encounter. Anything other than a decisive victory would be seen as a dereliction of duty on their part.

But, you never know. Cork’s form may have buffeted from pillar to post during the league (they lost their first three games before recovering and winning

three on the spin), and barring 2020 they have invariably fallen short against their neighbours to the west, but you just never know.

John Cleary’s men have shown a greater appetite for attacking play this season and in inside forwards Chris Óg Jones, Conor Corbett and Brian Hurley, they have three legitimate scoring threats who can whip up trouble at a second’s notice. The fact that Kerry’s regular full back Jason Foley is sidelined with an ankle ligament injury plays into Cork’s hands on that front.

Further out the field, Seán Powter will also need minding in his unorthodox centre forward role, and midfielders Colm O’Callaghan and Ian Maguire have the drive and know-how to upset any and all opponents who stand in their way.

As for Kerry’s midfield, Joe

O’Connor has been dealing with a niggle during the pre-championship break. He would be a loss if he ends up missing out.

On the other side of the coin, the reigning Munster champions have the reigning Footballer of the Year in their full forward line and with team captain Paudie Clifford and Seánie O’Shea also fit and raring to go, Jack O’Connor has three of the country’s top forwards at his disposal. Take your pick from the likes of Dara Moynihan, Cillian Burke, Paul Geaney and Killian Spillane to complete the front six.

When you also factor in Kerry’s record against Cork in Killarney – the Rebels haven’t won a championship match at the Fitzgerald Stadium since 1995 - you begin to see why the bookmakers are predicting a home win.

Kerry are unlikely to have it all their own way but if they are to be considered genuine All-Ireland contenders, they should start as they mean to go on by winning and winning with authority.

As they would say in Jack O’Connor’s native Dromid, tús maith leath na hoibre.

Ladies set sights on Munster glory

The Kerry ladies will get their 2024 Munster Senior Football Championship underway with a home tie against Tipperary in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday. The game, which starts at 1.45pm, forms part of a double-header with the men’s fixture against Cork.

Kerry will be eager to get back to winning ways following their defeat to Armagh in the Division 1 final a fortnight ago. Despite that loss, managers Declan Quill and Darragh Long will have taken plenty of positives from their league campaign. The fact that they managed to win five matches while resting several star players (unearthing some new options in the process) has to be classed as a success.

They may have reached the last two All-Ireland finals but Kerry’s record in Munster hasn’t quite been up to that standard. It’s seven years since they won a provincial title with old rivals Cork regularly trumping them during that period.

Burns: Return to September AllIreland finals possible

New GAA President Jarlath Burns has suggested that the All-Ireland Senior Football and Hurling Championship finals could return to their traditional September slots.

The GAA’s showpiece intercounty matches have been brought forward to July to facilitate the new ‘split season’, with club competitions taking over from August. The move has been met with mixed reviews. Some are pleased to see club players getting half the year to themselves without the distraction of elite intercounty games, while others feel the intercounty season is now too compacted.

Speaking on the new GAAGO show Ratified, Burns stated his belief that September All-Ireland finals could be back on the table in the future.

"There is a way of achieving that, going right back to September with the two finals," he said.

"The difficulty is the people who are going to have to compromise are the counties with their own championships. We missed the point with what the problem was. That problem is, if you are organising the Premier League fixtures, very simple, all you have to look out for are UEFA and FIFA fixtures."

mise to say to counties, we can work the master fixture schedule in and around this iteration of club organisation. If you do it this way there's where you play all your county games, there's where you will have your county players, there's where you will have your preparation.

"Build it all in. But if you want to continue with the old way that you had, don't come running to us."

This year’s All-Ireland finals will take place on July 21 (hurling) and July 28 (football).

Armagh native Burns also spoke of the need to rein in county board spending, and to monitor and regulate the amount of training GAA players are being asked to do.

When he led a GAA delegation to Pittsburgh to meet with the Steelers about the possibility of staging an NFL game in Croke Park, the topic of player welfare arose.

“They told us that after the Super Bowl, the closed season is run by the players’ union. They insist that happens and that no team is allowed to train,” Burns said.

The Kingdom should be in with a good shot of reversing that trend this season considering the fact that their near neighbours struggled in the league and wound up getting relegated. The Kerry women prevailed when the sides met in Tralee in February on a scoreline of 2-14 to 0-7.

First up for Kerry in Munster are Tipperary who finished fifth in Division 2 with a record of three wins and four defeats. In last year’s Munster Championship, Kerry beat Tipp by 2-8 to 1-5 with Danielle O’Leary and Emma Costello bagging the goals.

The ladies’ Munster Championship is run off on a round robin basis with Kerry, Cork, Waterford and Tipperary each playing each other once. The top two teams qualify for the Munster final. All four counties will advance to the All-Ireland group stage; the provincial champions will be the top seeds for that draw. Waterford will host Cork in the other Round 1 fixture on Saturday. Throw-in at Fraher Field, Dungarvan is at 3.45pm.

"If you are organising the GAA master fixtures plan you have to bump into 32 master fixture-making bodies, Higher Education, and multiply that by two as you have hurling and football. And then within that you have seven or eight different iterations of championships. It is totally ridiculous to think that we can organise a master fixtures plan around that.

"I think that would be a good compro-

“There are a number of ways that they do that. All of the GPS systems are licenced which means that the NFL can tell if any team is training by the fact that all the GPS systems are together at the one time.

“The second thing is there is a camera on their training ground that goes back to head office in the NFL and if there is one player out on that, the club could lose its licence to perform.

“When I rang counties and suggested putting a camera on centres of excellence last year, people laughed at me and said would you go away and catch a grip. But that's how stark it has to be.”

St Paul’s coach delighted with squad despite League Trophy

Utility Trust St Paul’s were unable to finish their 2023/24 season on a high by winning the League Trophy but coach James Fleming is nevertheless delighted with how the year panned out for his team.

Paul’s clinched promotion to the Super League by winning Division 1 in March and they looked to be on course for a memorable double when they made the final of the cup competition, but Swords Thunder came out on top of last weekend’s decider in Dublin. Swords won the game by 69 points to 63 at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght but as far as Fleming is concerned the defeat does not take the gloss off their glittering campaign.

“I couldn't be prouder of the players,” the Killarney man said. “They are a great team. Six weeks ago we were on ‘cloud nine’ after winning promotion so I suppose you could say we’re on ‘cloud eight’ now.

“This won't overshadow what has been a magnificent season for everyone.”

The Thunder victory was built around the terrific trio of game MVP Jensen Caretti, Jasmine Walker and Peggy Black, who inflicted the fatal wounds at crucial junctures.

Paul’s had some early foul trouble but Sofia Paska got the points on the board to get the Kerry side in level at the end of

the first quarter. The league champions looked to be in the ascendency in the second period with Denise Dunlea and Khiarica Rasheed on target but a couple of threes by veteran Aisling O’Sullivan meant the scores were tied once again by half-time (34-34).

Free throws by Lorraine Scanlon pushed Paul’s ahead at the start of the third but Swords began to assert their dominance as the quarter rolled on. They led by 10 until Dunlea drained a three, leaving a seven-point gap between the teams heading into the fourth.

Paul’s fought back and took the lead thanks to Rasheed and Rheanne O’Shea but the Thunder’s stars came good when the need was greatest. Paska tried to carry the load inside and she was able to cut the gap to two inside the final minutes, but Laura Fortune and Walker applied the finishing touches for the Dubliners. In the end, they prevailed on a scoreline of 69-63.

Khiarica Rasheed top scored for St Paul's with 19, closely folllowed by Paska with 16 and Dunlea with 14. Rheanne O’Shea had 10, Lorraine Scanlon 3 and Lynn Jones 1.

For Swords, Caretti, Walker and Black combined for 49 points, complemented by Aisling O’Sullivan on 6 and Laura Fortune on 5.

“They hit some massive shots, they are a good team with two great Americans,” Rheanne O’Shea reflected. “It was nip and tuck all the way but I suppose, after a long season, it was just a case of going to the well once too often.”

Lynn Jones also felt that the long season had taken its toll. “We just felt a little bit flat after a long year. There wasn't much gas left in the tank at the end. Of course we wanted to win today but we've had a great season and we can't lose sight of that.”

Crokes unveil new juvenile sponsor Fleming hails players after magnificent season

Dr Crokes GAA say they are “delighted” to welcome on board Utility Trust as sponsors of the club’s juvenile section.

The company, which is owned and run by club stalwart James Fleming, is providing new jerseys to all Crokes

underage teams. Fleming was on hand to present jerseys to the club’s minor team (pictured) who contested the County League Division 1 final on Tuesday.

“Dr Crokes are delighted Utility Trust have come on board to sponsor the underage section of the club,” Chairper-

son Eoin Brosnan said. “James Fleming had a long, distinguished career with Dr Crokes and James’ family have always been staunch Crokes people.

“We’re lucky that James is a position to sponsor us and help develop the stars of the future. We would encourage all our supporters and members to sup-

port Utility Trust and all our sponsors.” Dr Crokes Juvenile Chairperson Éanna Kavanagh echoed Brosnan’s sentiments. “Utility Trust’s commitment not only demonstrates their belief in our club but also highlights their genuine investment in the growth and success of local sports.”

World champion handballer Dominick Lynch speaks to Eamonn Fitzgerald about his glittering sporting career

Kerry’s male footballers have won 38 All-Ireland SFC titles and the Kerry ladies have won 11. The men lead the field, still well clear of Dublin on 31, while Cork are level with Kerry on the LGFA leaderboard. Tomorrow, both Kerry teams set out on the Road to Croker with a double-header of home games in the Fitzgerald Stadium. But what about Dominick Lynch, the 47-year-old Glenbeigh man who claimed his 37th All-Ireland last weekend? That and more (much more), including eight World Championships, 69 Munster Championships and a host of other titles. Who is this champion? Oscail an doras agus lig isteach an laoch. I interviewed Dominick earlier this week, but before I did I spoke with two men who know Dominick Well.

George Dennis, the dynamic driving force as Games Master for Kerry VEC over several decades, knew Dominick Lynch as a

student at Killorglin Community College and recalls Dominick’s prowess in sport.

“Dominic was a very dedicated student in Killorglin Community College and more importantly, he was a really nice unassuming guy,” George said. “Football was not Dominic's forte. Handball was his game and he was totally dedicated to training and perfecting his skills.

“At the time Glenbeigh had a very energetic handball club which provided an outlet for many students from the area. The Handball Court was Dominick's second home. He had some great games versus Tony Healy from Ballydesmond when they were both in their teens.

“Dominick was so determined that he was a winner. His achievements are an inspiration to all young boys and girls, showing that there is a far better healthy lifestyle to enjoy out there in this modern world of negative social and addictive influences.”

Kevin Griffin, a native of Glenbeigh and a staunch community worker for so many voluntary organisations in the county, spoke of how much Dominick’s achievements mean to Glenbeigh.

“There has been a great tradition of handball in the parish ever since world champion Fr Tom Jones PP introduced the game to the area, and was responsible for building the original alley,” Kevin noted.

“The people of Glenbeigh are very proud of Dominick’s achievements. He has brought great glory to the community since he started playing as a young boy. His success and commitment to handball in Glenbeigh has encouraged many young boys and girls to take up the game. He is a great role model for all and it is uplifting to see so many young people in the Community Centre where the handball court is located.”

And so to my conversation with the man himself…

My first recollections of you, Dominick, were of a very handy free-scoring corner forward with Killorglin CC, managed by teacher George Dennis, but you never progressed through the minor ranks for the green and gold geansaí.

I played a bit of football in school but it was no surprise, I suppose, that my interest was in the Handball Alley in Glenbeigh. My father was a very good player, and I must have been only 6 or 7 years old when I used to go to see him play and it started from there. Handball was my game and has been for the last 40 years. I love it. To be honest, I am addicted to handball, just like other addictions which are anything but healthy.

Fill me in on your preparations for last Saturday’s All-Ireland victory?

I had been in Croke Park the previous weekend and qualified. On the Thursday of the All-Ireland week, I hurt my back doing a job in Killarney (he is a self-employed landscaper) and I could hardly move. It was still awful stiff and very painful on Friday and felt I should pull out of the final. However, I held toughm hoping to God that it would be improved by match time. It wasn’t gone by any means but I was so close to conceding. But something still made me hang on.

Then on Saturday morning, there was a big improvement, still a bit stiff, but loose enough to take part. So, I headed for Croke Park for the All-Ireland 40x20 Masters Plus Championship.

That was hardly the best preparation for an All-Ireland final…

I had to qualify first on the previous weekend and I got through easily enough. I concentrated on my own game, and it all worked out fine. After the final on Saturday I sat into my (work) van and arrived home around half nine.

That gave you a well-deserved day off on Sunday.

Not at all. I followed my usual routine and was in the gym at the Castlerosse Hotel in Killarney at my usual time of 7.30am. Such dedication makes champions. But it wasn’t all plain sailing through the years. I remember you got into a lot of controversy with the Kerry Handball board who slapped a six-month suspension on you. How did that happen?

That was away back in 2001. I was playing for Kerry in the Munster 40x20 singles final in Cappagh, County Limerick on April the 7th. Kerry Group were the sponsors

handball

of the Kerry GAA teams at that time and still are, so I had the official Kerry Group logo on my singlet, but I had also the name of a man who also gave me some sponsorship. The Kerry Handball Board imposed a six-month suspension on me and that was regarded by most as a very severe punishment.

Did the Kerry Handball Board not cover all your expenses since you were representing the county?

Not at all, nothing until you got out of Munster, and they gave 100 euros. That didn’t go far to covering expenses to Dublin.

Now you are a self-employed landscaper and you had to forego earnings you would normally make on a Saturday which must be a heavy toll on the family finances. (Dominick is married to Evelyn and they have two young children Lucia and Dominick Junior).

Yes and on top of that I would be travelling to Dublin or other parts of the coun-

try. Even then diesel was very expensive. Look at the price of it now. Add in accommodation and meals. 300 euros wouldn't see you out of the trip. Mind you I am not complaining, as I do it all for the love of the game I love.

I recall that your father was also very annoyed with the severe sanction by the Kerry Handball Board. He certainly was. He was a fine player in his own right and so was my brother. There and then they walked away from handball and never again played the game or returned to the handball court. They were very bitter about my suspension, and they have hardly been at any of my own games down through the years since then.

The pressure on you to follow their example must have been very tempting. After all, you were a very high-profile player with a very bright future ahead of you and a big star for Kerry.

“After a lot of thought, I decided not to go away from the game I loved and that I might regret it later. I appealed the suspension, and it was reduced.

The rest is history. Kerry, Munster, All-Irelands and World Championships. You have been the shining star of not just your native Glenbeigh but winning titles just like the Kerry football teams. Any regrets?

Yes.

Tell us more.

What happened after that suspension. I kept going but my father and brother turned off handball forever. I have no doubt that if I had my brother with me in the doubles competitions, we would have won a lot together. We were certainly good enough to win. I am very fortunate to have Jack O’Shea to train with me and give me tough games three nights a week, the best preparation for

facing any opponent. Without Jack to drive me on, I don’t know if I would still be playing. He’s a mighty man.

At age 47 you must be thinking of retiring…

You must be joking. I am good to go for more. I’ll be upping the training for the World Championships to be held in UL next August. Three nights a week with Jack O'Shea and many more nights as well.

And no other competitions in between? Oh, sure the All-Ireland Championships are on in July and I’ll have a go at them leading on to the Worlds in August.

* * *

During Covid in 2021, I wrote a series of articles on handball and how strong it was in Killarney. Some visible signs of alleys are still there, in the Mon, the Sem, St Finan’s, and Ball Alley Lane, off High Steet close to Jack C's (John C’s) pub where the famous Fr Jones was never beaten in any game by anyone, an uncrowned World Champion. They are all silent now just as John Healy wrote so graphically in his book, ‘No one shouted stop’. Fair deuce to Spa GAA the only local GAA club catering for handballers, both male and female and they are making great strides in competitions.

MOTHERS AND OTHERS: A connection with the Cromane Mothers and Others group provided the opportunity for our counterparts to be one of only five Irish clubs to travel to Rennes in France to introduce them to a unique of football, GAA with a twist. Ladies from Wexford, Wicklow and Antrim headed aboard for what was heralded as a great initiative

to promote Gaelic football for women of all ages and ability. Outside of the onfield activities the hospitality was second to none and there was also time to view and visit the sights of the region. A great weekend was had by all, and the talk now is of a trip to the Spanish city of Barcelona in November.

SENIOR LADIES: Our senior ladies wrapped up a great week for Legion Ladies teams when they hosted Laune Rangers on Sunday morning in Round 2 of the Credit Union Donal Curtin Cup. Starting in strong fashion, they opened up an early three-point lead while playing against the breeze. Laune Rangers settled into the game, kicking their own scores as the half progressed before a well worked Legion goal made it 1-06 to 0-03 lead at the break. The visitors upped the intensity in the second half, but the defence held firm while maintaining the advantage. As the half went on, a few fresh legs were introduced with everyone contributing to a solid team performance. Another well worked Legion goal was followed by a Laune Rangers goal, and despite some late pressure, the ladies saw out the win on a scoreline of 2-08 to 1-06.

SENIOR MEN: Round four of the Credit Union County League has been confirmed for Kilcummin this Sunday April 21st with a 2pm throw in. The Senior B team picked up another win in Division 6 when they defeated An Ghaeltacht in Direen on Sunday afternoon. Final score Killarney Legion 1-9 An Ghaeltacht 0-11.

CHURCH GATE COLLECTION: Many thanks to everyone who collected, contributed and helped out with our Annual Church Gate Collection this weekend past. The flag day and Street collection is expected to be held in June. Míle buíochas arís.

U11 BOYS: Rathmore was the venue for the opening round of the U11 boys game and as is always the case at the Sliabh Luachra venue you earn your corn. Two fine games ensued and well done to coaches Andy O'Sullivan, Fergal O’Donnell and Kieran O’Shea for looking after the teams. Next up is Fossa, who travel into Direen on this Thursday, April 18th.

U15 BOYS: The U15 boys made it two from in Division 1 of the U15 County League. Following on from their impressive win over Glenbeigh /Glencar / Cromane they were equally empathic as they put a highly rated John Mitchels side to the sword. The win put them at the summit of the table and there is plenty of potential in this young team. Final score Killarney Legion 4-13 John Mitchels 2-7.

U15 BOYS DIV 9 COUNTY LEAGUE: The Green Team played their first game in County League in Glenflesk on Saturday evening against Glenflesk/Kilgarvan. All 19 boys played very well in a good win. They are out again this Monday, April 15th, at home against Na Gaeil.

U17 BOYS: The U17 Boys bowed out at the semi-final stage of Division 1 of the

County League. Facing neighbours Dr Crokes in Lewis Road they put in a spirited performance but ultimately were left to rue the absence of some key personnel, especially in the front line. They performed admirably throughout, leading by 0-5 to 0-4 at half time. The second half was equally tight, but a defining moment came around the three-quarter stage when the Croke's crossbar was rattled, with the sides level. And as if to underpin that moment, soon after the home side pounced with a superb goal to sway the game in their direction. Plenty solace can be gleamed from an extremely competitive competition and will give the team a real boost as they enter the County Championship on their own. Final score Dr Croke's 1-10 Killarney Legion 0-8.

U12 LADIES: On a rare fine evening our U12 teams entertained Dr Croke's and both sides served up some very enjoyable fare. In total 32 girls lined out in the green and white, and young Aindi and Evan made their refereeing debuts look seamless.

U16 LADIES: Both U16 teams were in action with the white team facing Spa in their opening game. A strong first half showing laid the foundation for a 7-12 to 2-8 win. The Green team had home advantage for their engagement with Beaufort. A score fest ensued and when the final tallies came they had their noses just in front. Final score Killarney Legion 4-16 Beaufort 5-12.

DEEPEST SYMPATHIES: The Club extends its sympathies to our Club Vice President Jimmy O’Leary and family on the sad passing of his son Michael. The Club also extends its sympathies to the family of Esther Duggan. Esther's son in law Donal O’Leary is our hard-working Juvenile Chairman while granddaughter Sinead plays with our U16 team. May they Rest in Peace.

LOTTO: Results Monday April 8th. Numbers were 8, 10, 11, 23. Bonus 19. No jackpot winner. Match 3s/Lucky Dips: Dermot O'Connor O’Kelly Villas; John Lyno Direen; Maria O’Sullivan online; Sheila Brosnan 21 Countess; Kitty Moynihan c/o Pat.

LGFA: Our Senior Ladies played their second game of the Dr. Curtin Cup with an away trip to Corca Dhuibhne on Sunday. Playing with the aid of a gale force wind in the first half, we settled quickly and goals from Kate Stack, Siobhan Burns, Laura O’Shea and Niamh Stack saw us build up a strong half time lead. A great team performance in the second half saw us overturn a number of attacks from our opponents with some strong defending in all areas of the field. With Sarah Cooper adding another goal, we finished winners on a scoreline of 5.11 to 2.3. Next up is an away trip to Scartaglen next Sunday.

Emmet Cronin and Rocco Sheehan ensured that we kept our 100% record in Division 6.

MINORS BOYS: Well done to our minor team who had a great victory over Beaufort in the county league semifinal in Fossa. They now play Currow in the final in the Dr. Crokes pitch on Monday 22nd April at 6.30pm.

MINOR LADIES: Our minor ladies started their County League campaign at home to Moyvane / Duagh. With only 6 minor players our numbers on the age are modest but with the help of our U16 & 15-yearolds we were able to field a young Fossa minor team with all our own girls, ably captained by Molly Collins. After a slow start and a free-flowing 1st half a single goal separated us at half time. While we played well and kicked 2-13 they built a fine lead throughout the 2nd half with goals at crucial stages. While the result didn’t go our way the girls put up a spirited performance and scored well against a very good Moyvane / Duagh side. With lots of learning on job, and new playing positions to try these next few weeks of minor games will be great for all our girls young and old. Well done to Seoladh Colleran who was part of the victorious Kerry minor team over Clare on Saturday in the first round of the Munster championship. U12 GIRLS: Fossa U12 girls had their first outing in the newly structured LGFA Go Games on Wednesday evening when Scartaglen came to Fossa. It was a great challenge and a very good learning experience, especially for the younger girls playing their first game at U12 level. Both Fossa teams improved as the games went on, played nice football and will take a lot from this experience. Thanks to Scartaglen for the game and to referees Anne and Lily O’Shaughnessy. The U12 girls travel to near neighbours Killarney Legion for their next game.

SENIOR LADIES: Fossa travelled to Glenflesk for Rd 2 of the Donal Curtin Cup. Fossa with the bare numbers faced a large home squad under new management. The home team chose the advantage of the wind for the 1st half and each side had plenty scoring opportunities. However, despite this distinct advantage Fossa finished the 1st half on top and went in with a handsome lead 1-05 v 2-07. Glenflesk started back best and scored early and often and raced into the lead out scoring Fossa 3-02 to 0-2 points. Now trailing 4-07 v 2-09 it would have been easy for our girls to fold but Fossa kept plugging away and with renewed energy and a little help from the wind Fossa rallied in the final quarter and kicked 3-03 to the hosts 0-3 points to see us post our first win of the season for the senior team and management. With some outstanding performances on the day all played their own part. Well done - next up Kerins O’Rahillys away.

UNDER 13 BOYS COUNTY LEAGUE: Fossa 1-10 Currow 4-05. Our Fossa U13 Boys team were back in County League action

against our East Kerry neighbours, Currow. The game was played on Fossa's main pitch which was in pristine condition and a credit to the hard-working groundsmen. Currow won the toss and elected to play with the wind in the 1st half and they started much better than their hosts and raced into an early lead. Our Fossa lads did not panic and as the half progressed, we were well in control, the highlight being a well taken goal by corner forward Eoin Murphy. As the half time whistle sounded the home team were ahead on the scoreboard 1-07 to 1-03 and with the wind to their backs in the 2nd half all was going according to the script. However, there is old GAA saying which goes something like 'Goals win Games' and unfortunately for Fossa the goals came Currow's way in that 2nd half. Against the run of play the visitors struck for three goals in the 2nd period and left Fossa with a mountain to climb. But our brave lads fought to the bitter end and just came up short in the end losing by 4 points on a final score line of 1-10 to 4-05. Our goalkeepers Noah Crawley and Colm O’Sullivan made some great saves on the night. Our full back line of Cian Riordan, Donnacha Coffey, Rory Salvator and Noah Keogh defended superbly. The half backs of Sean Doyle, Shea Driver and Charlie O’Meara showed brilliant effort throughout. Our midfielders Gerry Moroney and Aaron O’Sullivan caught some great ball and linked up very well between defence and attack. The half forwards of David Kennelly, Johnny Myers, George Nomikas, Tristan Cryan and Ryan Lynch worked themselves to a standstill, and our full forward line of Sean McElligott, Ross Cronin, Eoin Murphy, Cian Sheehan and Oliver Bagi were very lively all night. Next up for this team is away to Kerins O’Rahillys on next Friday evening. Congratulations to Currow and thanks for a most sporting game throughout. Finally, well done to our excellent match referee Sean Casey from Spa who provided a full team of officials on the night.
