Major expansion plan for Killarney Innovation Centre
Killarney Innovation Centre has received planning permission to add additional space to its innovation business Centre.
It is envisaged that the future extension will have a transformative effect for the business landscape of Killarney and the wider Kerry region.
The expansion of Killarney Innovation Centre will not just represent bricks and mortar, but a future commitment to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and growth within the community.
“It's important to reflect on the journey that has brought us to this point. Killarney has long been known for its natural beauty and cultural richness, but today, we embark on a journey to make it equally renowned for its dynamic business environment.
“The expansion of the Innovation Business Centre represents a significant investment in the future of our local economy. By increasing available business
space and facilities, we are laying the groundwork for a thriving ecosystem where start-ups and small businesses can flourish. This isn't just about physical infrastructure; it's about creating an environment where ideas can take root, where innovation can thrive, and where dreams can become reality.” said Sean Counihan KIC chairperson.
“The project is about more than just business. It's about community. It's about
creating opportunities for our friends and neighbours to pursue their passions, build their futures, and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of Kerry's economy.”
The future plans will have extensive facilities tailored to the needs of startups and small businesses, providing the tools and resources necessary to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs.
The build will have a total proposed floor area of 814 sq. m incorporated within
Fossa boy (13) in urgent need
The urgent medical needs of a Fossa boy was raised in the Dáil this week.
Liam Dennehy Quinn has scoliosis, a condition where the spine twists and curves to the side.
It can affect people of any age, from babies to adults, but most often starts in children aged 10 to 15. Scoliosis can improve with treatment.
Last December, Liam was was deemed to be in urgent need of an operation for scoliosis. He has been living in University Hospital Kerry for the past 23 days and is becoming more rigid and potentially
inoperable. He is at risk of needing two operations, rather than one, as well as longer stays in the hospital.
Deputy Healy Rae pushed Taoiseach Simon Harris to intervene in the case in the Dail on Wednesday of this week.
“His mother, Pamela, is worn out. His grandmother, Mary, is worn out. His life is in danger and his well-being is being jeopardised,” Healy Rae told the meeting.
“An unconfirmed date is being spoken about. It was given by a nurse after constant questioning by Liam's dear
a two-storey, split level build. Care has been taken to develop a design that elevates the character of the existing building, to deliver a considered and homogeneous assembly of architectural forms with a consistent typology. The building will incorporate sustainable elements such as biodiverse green roof system reducing the hard landscaping on-site, PV solar panel arrays for on-site micro generation and secure covered cycle storage to facilitate cycling as an active travel option.
Importantly, this project is a testament to the spirit of innovation that defines our community, showing that we have the power to shape the future of Kerry and to create a legacy that will endure for generations to come. In the Killarney Innovation Centre, the measure of our success will not be found in the buildings we construct, but in the lives, we touch and the business success that we inspire.
Conor O’Leary, manager of the centre added: “As a focal point for entrepreneurship and innovation in our community, the Killarney Innovation Centre has been at the forefront of fostering growth and development for local businesses.
The upcoming build project marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to providing state-of-the-art facilities and resources for entrepreneurs, start-ups, and established businesses alike.”

mother. What do we have to say or do in this Chamber to take care of this lovely 13-year-old boy? He is languishing in a hospital room in University Hospital Kerry because he is not well enough to go home. The 24-hour home care he needs is not there for him. I am asking the Taoiseach about this for a second time. I am not asking; I am on bended knee, begging him to please ask the Minister for Health to directly intervene before it is too late for this young boy.”
His family has gone through enough. I am not fighting with the Taoiseach or arguing
with him. He knows I am not criticising him. I am just asking him to please act for this young little boy.”
Harris said he will liase with the Minister for Health on the matter.
‘I thank Deputy Michael Healy-Rae for raising Liam’s situation on behalf of his mother, Pamela, and his grandmother, Mary,” said Harris.
“The Deputy raised this issue with me last week. He also wrote to me about it last week. I have been in contact with the Minister for Health in relation to the case. I will do so again this afternoon.”

Calls for an Autismfriendly playground in Knockreer
The Killarney Municipal District Office said it “would welcome a meeting with stakeholders to discuss any opportunities to broaden the universal access of Knockreer playground."
This follows a motion by Cllr John O’Donoghue at this week’s Killarney Municipal District Meeting.
He asked if the Council would commit to providing an Autism friendly area in Knockreer Playground.
“Accessibility to all aspects of society is a major issue for some and I feel we as a Council should lead the way in doing all we can to ensure all citizens of our State have equal rights. I am very fortunate to be a small part of a wonderful group working to make Killarney Autism Friendly to ensure those with additional sensory needs are catered for in our town,” he told the meeting.
“No child in this State should ever have to feel grateful for simply being facilitated to access the same level of care or services as their peers, but the point still stands in that it shows the importance of what great things can be achieved by
relatively small steps on our part. I ask that the Council would look favourably upon any request for assistance, be it financial or otherwise, if any groups come to them looking for it.”
A council official replied: “Kerry County Council are currently updating the Council's Playground Policy following recent consultation and continues to upgrade playgrounds including Killarney (Knockreer) Playground. Kerry County Council will continue to enhance access to play for children with a difference within Killarney (Knockreer) Playground, to include autism-friendly certified play equipment, as further funding becomes available. The Killarney MD Office would welcome a meeting with stakeholders to discuss any opportunities to broaden the universal access of Knockreer playground.”

Water Babies unveiled heart-warming tales of how swimming and playing in water have become transformative for babies and toddlers, aiding them in overcoming health challenges, enhancing their development, and bringing joy to their lives and their families.
Despite special needs and serious illness-
es, many Water Babies Little Heroes have demonstrated an astonishing amount of resilience and courage, defying the odds from their earliest years.
Rachel has emerged as a true Little Hero through her remarkable journey in the swimming pool at the Aquila Club.

Lack of footpaths at Madam’s Hill may endanger pedestrians
A local councillor is calling for the much-promised footpath to be built on Madam’s Hill before someone is seriously injured.
Cllr Brendan Cronin has again raised the issue, three years after he was first told that something would be done there.
"I am again calling on Kerry County Council to urgently rectify the present highly dangerous situation for pedestrians where there is no public footpath linking the new Madams Height housing development to the existing footpath on the N22 which is 200m away,” he said.
“It is clearly shown in the original planning, but in fact a footpath from the new housing development comes out to a
dead end at the public road. Back in a council meeting in March 2021 I requested the Council to construct this vital footpath for pedestrian safety on what is a very busy dangerous road
“Three years later nothing has been done which is totally unacceptable. Kerry County Council have, at the Madams Height and in the general Aghadoe area collected, substantial development levies which are supposed to be for improving local community infrastructure, I am appealing to Council management and engineers to use this money to build the required footpath from the Madam’s Hill junction to connect with the Madams Height development, Aghadoe before some ne is seriously injured."
St Brigid’s launch art exhibition
Students from St Brigid’s Secondary School host an art exhibition at Killarney Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht and Media on New Road.
'Personal Reflections' is an exhibition by Transition and fifth year students at the school.
This Exhibition is a collaboration of two projects, 'Artist in Schools' funded by a Kerry Arts Council, and 'Creative Engagement' funded by NAPD.
The projects were delivered by Artist and Art Director of the Art House, Tracy Sexton, and supported by Art teachers Alice Quilter and Fiona Archibald.
Both projects aimed to enhance students' art experience by developing their artistic skills, creativity, and personal ex-
pression through the process of drawing and painting.
“'Personal Reflections' offers a captivating exploration into the intertwining realms of Portraiture, Still Life and Personal Identity. Through self-portraits and objects, this exhibition delves into the complexities of how individuals perceive themselves and how they are perceived by others. Each painting reveals a personal narrative, inviting viewers to reflect on their own identity and the identities of those around them. From the striking gaze of a portrait to the quiet elegance of a still life, each piece serves as a mirror, inviting expression, introspection, and connection,” said Jer Lyons, acting PR Coordinator at St Brigid's.
The exhibition will launch on May 8 at 7.00 pm and will continue until May 24.

Áras Phádraig site plans due by end of June
Kerry County Council will publish plans on the future of the Áras Phádraig site by the end of June.
Cllr Brendan Cronin questioned the delay on the plans at this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.
He said: “At the end of 2023 we were informed that plans were very advanced for a new 300 seat auditorium with meeting rooms etc on the Áras Phádraig site and that the planning would be brought before us in the New Year along
with a design and assessment for a multistorey car park. What is the delay?’
A council official replied: “Detailed planning drawings and documentation have been prepared for a new Theatre with community space, a Public Plaza and a Primary Care Centre for the Áras Phádraig site. An assessment report is currently being prepared on the suitability of the Town Centre Car Parks to determine which site is most suitable for a the provision of a multi storey Car Park. This report will be completed by Q2 2024.”
National School hone sign language skills
While many of us were duped by the now infamous interpreter who bluffed his way into signing for Nelson Mandela's memorial service in 2013, there's no faking it for the pupils of Knockanes National School who have been honing their Irish Sign Language skills for three years now.
The school adopted International Sign Language as a third language in 2021, in tandem with its newly founded Special
Class for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Since then, children have engaged in a number of Irish Sign Language modules relating to home, school, hobbies, food, celebrations and other relevant topics with tutor John Patrick Doherty and the "Say Yes to Languages" primary school programme.
Teachers and Special Needs Assistance teachers have also partaken in after-school classes with John Patrick and are gradually incorporating ISL into daily communications as well as special events at school.

Back from Africa as tracked Irish Cuckoo lands in Killarney National Park
The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has confirmed that Cuach KP, one of the first Irish Cuckoos to be tagged as part of a Cuckoo Tracking Project, has landed home in Killarney National Park after a winter spent in the rainforests of the Congo Basin in Central Africa.
Cuach KP, along with two other Irish Cuckoos, was tagged in Killarney National Park in May 2023. He is the first to successfully make the 9,000km journey home for the summer months.
On arrival into Ireland on Monday, KP made a short stop in Fermoy before making his way back to Derrycunihy, in Killarney National Park, the place where he was originally tagged before his release. While the Cuckoo has been well-studied during the breeding season, very little is known about the routes they take once they head off on migration or where in Africa they spend the winter months.
The Cuckoo Tracking Project was set up by the NPWS together with the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) last year to better understand their migration patterns and the habitat pressures on the Cuckoo population. The birds were given names and fitted with satellite tags so that their movements could be tracked.
Over the course of Cuach KP's extraordinary 9000km journey to and from the Kingdom, he covered two continents and several countries.
The Cuckoo returns...Hoping to solve the intriguing natural mysteries of the Cuckoo - namely 'Cuach KP' is Sam Bayley, Conservation Ranger, National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan“We’re delighted that Cuach KP has found his way home to Killarney during the first year of this monitoring project. Cuckoos are such an intriguing bird and one that we associate with the arrival of summer. All of us at Killarney National Park are now hoping that the two other birds tagged as part of this project will follow and join him here over the coming days,” said Eamonn Meskell, Divisional Manager at Killarney National Park.
Sam Bayley, NPWS Conservation Ranger, who set up the Project in conjunction with the British Trust for Ornithology, added:
“Satellite tagging gives us a clear picture of the Cuckoos journey for the first time, to Africa and back to Ireland. KPs journey was a round trip of nearly 9000km ending with an epic sea crossing from north-
ern Spain direct to Ireland across the Bay of Biscay. Big sea crossings haven't been recorded in Cuckoos in Europe before, so that’s a really interesting twist.” Reports from the satellite tagging system indicate that other Cuckoos from the project are also on their way.
Cuach Torc is currently in the vicinity of Brittany. Cuach Cores was the last of the three to leave. The latest reports suggest that Cores left Algeria this week and is already making quick progress.
Cuckoos, or Cuach as gaelige, are a summer migrant to Ireland. Adult birds are resident here from April to early July, having spent the winter on the African continent. They are a unique bird in Ireland as they lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and have no involvement in raising their young. Across Ireland, the Cuckoo has seen a 27% reduction in breeding distribution between the first national census, Bird Atlas (1968-1972), and the most recent Bird Atlas (2007-2011).

The three local girls are due home om May 7 and Scorchers will host a homecoming celebration in the Killarney Court Hotel at 7pm that evening.
“We are delighted to be hosting a homecoming event for these ladies.

Brian Lawlor elected chair of IHF Kerry branch
Brian Lawlor, Group General Manager of the O'Donoghue Ring Collection, has been elected Chair of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF), which represents hotels and guest houses across the county.
Originally from Wexford, Brian has a hospitality career spanning over two decades, having previously held the positions of General Manager of the Killarney Plaza Hotel & Spa and Killarney Towers Hotel & Leisure Centre and, prior to that, General Manager of the Carriage House at Adare Manor.
Brian is a business studies graduate in Hotel and Catering Management from Waterford Institute of Technology.
“It is a great honour to have been elected Chair of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation. Hotels and guesthouses throughout Kerry make such a vital contribution to local and regional tourism, which supports over 16,000 livelihoods throughout the county. I look forward to representing them and working closely
with my IHF colleagues to engage with Government and industry partners to address the challenges we face head on, including the very high costs of doing business within our industry. This is an increasing concern and requires swift action from the Government,” said Brian who paid tribute to his predecessor Bernadette Randles.
“On behalf of my colleagues and fellow hoteliers in Kerry, I wish to acknowledge and thank Bernadette for her leadership and the immense commitment she has demonstrated throughout her tenure as Branch Chair. During this time, she has provided a strong voice for local hotels, advocating on behalf of our sector and wider tourism industry here in Kerry.”
Kilcummin estate has gone 20 years without a footpath
A 20 year fight to get a public footpath extended in Kilcummin was brought before a Killarney Municipal District meeting on Wednesday.
Both John O’Donoghue and Martin Grady sought updates on the footpath from Kilcummin Village to Páirc Chuimin.
“This has dragged on for years now which is unacceptable for the residents of the estate,” Cllr O’Donoghue told the meeting.
A Kerry County Council official replied:
“The provision of a public footpath between Páirc Chuimín and Kilcummin Village needs to go through the following phases, the acquisition of land, statutory approval and funding stream. Kerry
County Council has prepared a preliminary design and will engage with the relevant landowners with a view to acquiring the land by agreement.”
Grady was not happy with the response give that the issue is on-going for nearly 20 years – since around the same time the estate was built.
“Residents of Páirc Chuimín, Kilcummin are taking their lives in their hands going to school, the shop and Church,” he told the meeting.
“Infrastructure should be put in place first, such as footpaths and public lighting before a block is put to foundation. It should be a stipulation in the planning. It’s not the only place with this issue, Barraduff and Madam’s Hill has the same issue. Residents safety must come first.”

Killarney’s bid to win the coveted overall award in this year’s national Tidy Towns Competition is officially underway.
The 2024 Killarney Looking Good Competition was launched this week and hopes are high that, with a little extra effort by all involved, the town could have great cause to celebrate towards the end of the year.
Killarney was named Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town in 2023 but, interestingly, it finished just a single point behind overall winner Abbeyleix in County Laois. Killarney also scooped the regional award for the south west, the county award for Kerry and a gold medal for excellence last year. It improved its performance on 2022 by a whopping 14 points, rising from 361 to 375.
The competition adjudicators were rich in their praise for Killarney which they
described as a beautiful town with much to offer residents and visitors in terms of visual and recreational amenity, nature activities and heritage.
The Tidy Towns Committee, chaired by former long-serving councillor and keen environmentalist Michael Gleeson, includes senior local authority staff members, community activists, business leaders and dedicated Tidy Towns volunteers.
Over three decades after it was first initiated to help enhance the visual image of the town, the Killarney Looking Good Competition returned with a vengeance last year – after a pandemic-enforced absence – with a new committee, new categories, new sponsors and ambitious targets.
The project was first launched in 1991 and it grew in stature each year, culminating in some style when Killarney won the prestigious overall award in the 2011 Tidy Towns Competition.
Now 13 years later, Killarney is hoping that it will be a lucky 13 and that this could once again be the town’s glory year.
The Looking Good Competition will see awards presented in over 20 different categories and high achievers in the business and residential communities will be honoured at a gala prizegiving ceremony at the close of the tourist season.
The honours list will include the Yvonne Quill Award in memory of the late great businesswoman who was the driving force behind the Killarney Tidy Towns campaign for several years, and the Fr Michael Murphy Award in memory of the popular priest who played a huge part in Killarney, Kenmare and Sneem winning
the overall national award in 2011, 2000 and 1987 respectively.
In the business community, there will be awards for the best large and small commercial premises, best newly painted premises, best signage and the best retail award with prizes also for the most impressive hotel, public house, restaurant, café, guesthouse and best public building as well as the most improved premises. In the residential categories awards will go to the best large and small estates, best private residence, best roadside garden, best floral display and best friendly planting award.
Other categories include a green hospitality award, a corporate special responsibility award, a restoration award, best school and a special biodiversity award.
The Killarney Looking Good Competition is organised by Killarney Municipal District Council and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, with MD O’Shea & Sons the overall sponsors of the competition and O’Mahony Media Ltd the media sponsor.
The competition will run throughout the tourist season and businesses and residential areas will be monitored on an ongoing basis.

“I am thrilled to be supporting the Corcoran’s charity walk in aid of AADI, and I am looking forward to taking part on the day. AADI is a wonderful charity that makes a genuine difference to children with Autism and their families,” said All Ireland medallist James O’ Donoghue.
“The dogs help to reduce anxiety and to promote independence, with their priority being to make sure that the child is safe. We are lucky to live in one of the most stunning locations in Ireland, and the Gap of Dunloe is a walk that's not to be missed. I am looking forward to meeting all the fundraisers on the day in support of this very worthy cause.”
Áine Cattigan spoke about the importance of their AADI dog Buzz, and the difference that Buzz has made to their family, she said: “We as a family feel beyond grateful that Buzz has come into our lives. It is hard to put into words the difference that our phenomenal Autism assistance dog has made to us. When we go out in public, we are now safe in the knowledge that Buzz will help to keep Darragh away from harm. As they are joined by a lead tied around Darragh’s waist, Buzz prevents him from potentially bolting

into ongoing traffic, or from running off. Buzz also helps to keep Darragh calm, and they have a genuine bond that is a joy to behold. As Darragh’s mother, I am now able to go on outings with just the two of us without worrying, this allows my husband and my other sons to enjoy valuable family time together also. Buzz has changed our entire world; we are forever grateful for him, and we are delighted to support Corcoran’s charity walk for AADI in any way that we can.”
The aim of Corcoran’s Gap of Dunloe walk is to raise as much funds as possible for AADI, with a minimum fundraising target of €100 per person (this includes
the cost of the boat trip and lunch).
The event is pre-booking only, and Corcoran’s invite people of all ages to sign up and join this exciting day out for a truly worthy cause.
Registration on the day of the walk, for those who have pre-booked, will commence at 9.30am on Saturday, 8 June at Ross Castle, Killarney.
The boats will depart at 10.30am, taking all participants on an hour-long journey through the stunning lakes of Killarney. This will be followed by an 11K walk (approximately 2.5 – 3 hours) from Lord Brandon’s Cottage to Kate Kearney’s cottage, where lunch will be served
upon completion of the walk. Corcoran’s Furniture will provide a complimentary bus service back to Ross Castle for all those participating in the fundraising event. All funds raised will go directly towards the training of an assistance dog.
• To register for the walk, please contact AADI via: : www.autismassistancedogsireland.ie/ event/view/corcorans-gap-of-dunloe. Once registration is completed participants will receive an AADI fundraising pack and a t-shirt in support of the event.

Primary school children go behind the scenes at racecourse
To launch the 2024 racing season which gets underway on May 12, school children from St Oliver's Primary School and Presentation Monastery National School took part in a special Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) Racing Juniors education day at Killarney Racecourse last week.
150 fifth and sixth class primary school children got to go behind the scenes at Killarney Racecourse and meet Tralee-based trainer Tom Cooper who explained what his job entails as a racehorse trainer as well as a typical dayto-day routine for his racehorses, their exercise schedule and diet, and how he prepares them to run in a race. Jockey Gary Noonan brought the children into the weigh-room to show them the jockeys’ changing room and the kit jockeys wear and use on race days in-
cluding boots, back-protector, helmet and saddle.
Track Supervisor Mike O’Connor took the children on a course walk to see firsthand how the team prepare the track for a race meeting. In addition, farrier Timmy McGillycuddy was on hand to give children a demonstration.
“The HRI Juniors education days are a great opportunity for the next generation to learn about the horse racing industry, see behind the scenes of a racecourse and understand the variety

of jobs available which amount to over 30,000 nationally in the racing and breeding industry. We look forward to welcoming more schools to Killarney Racecourse in the future,” said Killarney Racecourse Chairman Billy O’Sullivan. The objective of the HRI Racing Juniors education days is to encourage an affinity with racehorses among the younger
generation and demonstrate the variety of careers available in the racing and breeding industry in Ireland.
HRI Racing Juniors education days are free to attend. To register your school’s interest for a HRI Racing Juniors education day at your local racecourse in 2024, please email: hriracingjuniors@ hri.ie.

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEYERSI Study finds Irish teens preference for mixed schools
A recent study by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has challenged the long-standing tradition of single-sex schooling in Ireland.
The research, focusing on "voluntary" secondary schools (those under religious patronage), found a surprising disconnect between student preferences and the current educational landscape. The key takeaway? Irish teenagers, regardless of whether they currently attend a single-sex or co-educational school, overwhelmingly favour mixed-gender learning environments.
Ireland boasts one of the highest rates of single-sex education in Europe, with roughly a third of secondary school students attending these institutions. However, the ESRI study paints a different picture of student desires.
Among students in single-sex schools, a significant portion (63%) expressed a preference for co-educational settings. This sentiment wasn't limited to just this group. Interestingly, even students already in mixed schools indicated a strong preference for the system, with 61% favoring a predominantly or entirely co-educational school system overall. The study also highlighted potential
drawbacks of single-sex schools. Students in these environments often felt their schools hindered opportunities for making friends with the opposite sex. This suggests that single-sex environments might limit important social development experiences during adolescence.
While students overwhelmingly favoured co-education, the study revealed a generation gap on the issue. Parents and school staff held different views. While some parents expressed a preference for single-sex environments, student voices emerged as the strongest advocates for change.
Devastating floods plague Kenya
Heavy rains lashing across Kenya have triggered widespread flooding this week, displacing thousands and causing widespread damage to infrastructure and livelihoods.
The deluge has affected numerous regions, with areas around Lake Victoria and the Rift Valley being particularly
hard-hit. Rivers have burst their banks, submerging homes, farms, and roads. Images and videos circulating online depict a landscape transformed by raging floodwaters, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
Thousands have been forced to flee their homes, seeking refuge in emergency shelters or with relatives on higher
Pee-stained denim sparks debate
The world of high fashion is no stranger to pushing boundaries, but the latest offering from design duo Jordanluca has some scratching their heads.
Their Fall/Winter 2023 collection features a pair of jeans with a prominent "pee stain" design, sparking a viral debate about fashion, taste, and the ever-blurring line between art and commerce. Jordanluca, helmed by designers Jordan Bowen and Luca Marchetto, isn't new to unconventional aesthetics. Their past collections have flirted with many contraverisal themes. This time, they've opted for a more literal interpretation of distress – a dark stain strategically placed on the crotch area of the jeans.
The jeans, unsurprisingly, went viral on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Reactions were mixed, with some finding the design humorous and a bold statement on societal norms. The hefty price tag – over $800 – added another layer of disbelief for some.
ground. With basic necessities like food, clean water, and sanitation now scarce, the risk of disease outbreaks is a growing concern.
Beyond the displacement, the floods have dealt a severe blow to Kenya's agricultural sector. Farmlands have been submerged, destroying crops and livestock. This poses a significant threat to food security, as many Kenyans rely on subsistence farming for their daily meals.
Hundreds find new accommodation as Dublin encampment cleared
Hundreds of asylum seekers who had been living in tents on Mount Street in Dublin city center were moved to alternative accommodation, marking the end of a monthslong encampment. The operation, conducted on Wednesday, May 1, involved government agencies and aimed to provide safer and more secure housing for those seeking asylum in Ireland.
The makeshift encampment arose near the International Protection Office (IPO) due to a shortage of available accommodation for asylum seekers. With limited capacity, the state is struggling to house
the growing number of people arriving in Ireland.
The dismantling of the tents and the relocation of residents were undertaken to ensure the well-being of the asylum seekers. The new locations, Citywest and Crooksling tented accommodation, offer improved living conditions compared to the streets.
However, the situation highlights the ongoing challenge of accommodating asylum seekers in Ireland. The government has pledged to increase capacity and find more permanent housing solutions. However, it remains to be seen how quickly these solutions can be implemented.
EV sales hit the brakes in April
The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has released its latest report on new vehicle registrations, and a concerning trend has emerged: electric vehicle (EV) sales plummeted by over 40% in April compared to March 2024.
This sharp decline casts a shadow over
Ireland's ambitious electric vehicle transition goals.
While overall new car registrations saw a 14% increase year-on-year, electric vehicles failed to capitalize on this growth. This raises questions about the reasons behind the sudden drop and the potential challenges hindering wider EV adoption in Ireland.
Be tick-aware this summer, warns HSE
With warmer weather approaching and more people heading outdoors, the HSE is urging the public to be aware of ticks and the risk of Lyme disease.
Ticks are small, spider-like creatures that feed on the blood of humans and animals. While not all tick bites transmit disease, they can carry bacteria that cause Lyme disease, a potentially debilitating illness.
The HSE's Health Protection Surveillance Centre have launched a campaign emphasising the importance of preventing tick bites in the first place. They recommend the following tips:
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when venturing into areas with long grass or woodland and tuck your pants
into your socks for added protection
• Apply insect repellent containing DEET to exposed skin, following the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
• After spending time outdoors, conduct a thorough body check for ticks, paying particular attention to areas like the armpits, groin, behind the knees, and the scalp.
Lyme disease is treatable with antibiotics when caught early. However, if left undiagnosed, it can lead to more serious complications affecting the joints, nervous system, and heart.
The HSE's advice coincides with Tick Awareness Day, observed on May 1st each year. This day serves as a reminder to take precautions against tick bites and protect yourself from Lyme disease.
Scientists reconstruct Neanderthal woman's face
Scientists have peered into the past and brought a face to life, meticulously reconstructing the skull of a Neanderthal woman who lived a staggering 75,000 years ago.
Nicknamed Shanidar Z after the Shanidar Cave in Iraqi Kurdistan where her remains were found in 2018, this discovery is shedding new light on our extinct cousins.
The process to revealing Shanidar Z's visage wasn't easy. Her skull had been shattered into over 200 fragments. Researchers painstakingly pieced together these fragile bone fragments, akin to reassembling a complex puzzle. This intricate process involved stabilising the remains in situ before meticulously removing them and undertaking the delicate task of reconstruction.
Shanidar Z isn't just a skull anymore.
By using sophisticated techniques to recreate facial features based on bone structure and archaeological evidence, scientists have breathed life into her image. This reconstruction is part of a new Netflix documentary, "Secrets of the Neanderthals," and is aimed at challenging traditional perceptions of Neanderthals as brutish and primitive.
Minister praises town that never stands still
If you build it, they will come. That was the positive message Education Minister, Norma Foley, had for business leaders when she addressed a Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce members’ luncheon on Monday.
She described Killarney as “the beating heart” of the tourism industry and she said she admired the fact that businesses in the town were so progressive, forward-thinking and cohesive.
“You never stand still – there’s always more to be done,” she said.
“I want to acknowledge the extraordinary role played by individuals and the collective to ensure Killarney remains a vibrant, attractive and economically dynamic place.”
The minister was speaking at Hotel Killarney which has just completed the first phase of a major €9.5m renovation with the provision of 120 superior bedrooms and family suites and a complete redesign of its ground floor operations, including a new restaurant, new bar and new lobby area.
Minister Foley said when she visited Scotland for St Patrick’s Day she was very taken by the manner in which tourism providers there spoke so positively of Killarney’s warm charm, its people and the excellence of the product it provides.
She said Kerry has now adopted a more cohesive approach to tourism and when Killarney is successful, the rest of the county also benefits.
“55 per cent of visitors to Killarney also go elsewhere in the county and the top three destinations after Killarney are Dingle, Kenmare and Tralee,” she said, adding that an economically successful
Killarney has a far-reaching spin-off.
“While Kerry is a county of many constituent parts, there is extraordinary power and there is an extraordinary opportunity in the collective,” the minister added.
“Kerry has a quality of life and a quality of place that is both inspiring and unique and Killarney, in particular, continues to grow and innovate every single day.”
Specifically praising the work of the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce,
Minister Foley said it is a tremendously proactive organisation that works very closely with the local authority, local businesses and the hospitality sector.
“Everybody is on the one page here and everybody has a role to play. Chamber’s leadership role is hugely important,” she said.
Teresa RANDLES is a former Head of Human Resources and now works as a Career Coach and Career Planning Strategist. How to manage your time
A key workplace skill is how to plan and manage your time effectively.
Manage your time (and perhaps the time of your team) properly to ensure projects are completed on time. Poor time management can affect the quality of work and can put you under unnecessary pressure. A lastminute. com approach is a poor one!
A person once said to me that the urgent tasks always get done but the truly important tasks often fall by the wayside. How do we avoid this from happening?
The first thing I recommend is taking a step back from the job/project/ study you are doing and think about the specific tasks/responsibilities and most importantly the priorities you have – how much time should they be taking, how much time in reality are they taking?
Also think about what time of the day you are most effective and productive – some of us are better in the early morning, others in the late evening. With this information you can begin to plan and schedule your time more effectively. Everyone should use a diary – preferably online. Some people use a colour coded system for important tasks or projects and if that works for you then that’s great.
The most important thing is that deadlines are diarised and, working backwards from the deadline, there are significant chunks of time in the diary to ensure that work is done. I always build in some contingency –just in case the deadline is brought forward or a priority changed.
I always recommend people look at their task list – do all tasks have to be done by them, can they be delegated? If they can be delegated, build in some handover time and catch-up time with the person you at delegating to.
Are you easily distracted by your phone – the news Apps, social media etc. If you are then mute them while you are working on a task. A ‘quick check’ on the news headlines can result in a 20/30 minutes being lost. Make good time management a habit, looking at your diary, checking your priorities, scheduling your time appropriately. Work should be easier to manage, you will be more productive and, hopefully, less stressed! Youth marshal programme unveiled ahead of Rally
Youngsters aged between 12 and 18 can now train to become junior rally marshals.
Motorsport Ireland will take another step in the implementation of their 2024 –2027 strategic plan at this weekend‘s Assess Ireland Rally of the Lakes. The third edition of its Junior Marshal and Junior Official training programme will be held in the Gleneagle Hotel on Friday afternoon.
This follows a similar move at the Mayo Rally and the West Cork Rally in March where over 30 Junior Marshals and Officials were in attendance on both occasions. Motorsport Ireland President Aiden Harper said in Mayo. "This is a great day for our sport where we have opened the doors to our Youth from all over the country. Youth are the future of our sport and by involving them with their parents and guardians from the age of 12 is a sig-
nificant way forward in our sport. We will continue to roll out training in this area as events take place all around the country."
A Junior Marshal is someone aged between 12 and 18 who will marshal alongside their parent or guardian. A Junior Marshal will not be eligible to marshal between start lines and finish lines, however they will be able to carry out the marshalling of service area, stage entries and exits and other areas of an event where cars are not in competition.
A Junior Official is someone aged between 16 and 18 who will act, alongside their parent or guardian as an apprentice official. This will help to attract more youth into the background team of motorsport events which is so vital for the safeguarding of our sport going forward. The training will take place at the Gleneagle Hotel on Friday at 5pm. To register email: training@motorsportireland.com
RALLY OF THE LAKES – local news
It is a special occasion for Noel O’Sullivan Sr, father of the rally’s top seed, as the Muckross man will start his 40th Rally of the Lakes out of 43 editions.
His co-driver Nicholas Burke will be alongside the 30th time and the organisers have allocated the Ford Escort Mk2 crew door number 40 to mark the occasion.
Noel O’Sullivan Jr and his driver Callum Devine are aiming for a hattrick of Rally of the Lakes victories this weekend.
The winners of the Rally of the Lakes for the past two years, and reigning Tarmac champions, are seeded at one in their Volkswagen Polo GTi R5.
The Derry/Kerry crew prepared for the event by finishing second on Saturday’s Maiden City Rally, Devine’s home rally, but that was a short six-stage sprint and the Rally of the Lakes, over two days, features 14 demanding stages.
The Rally of the Lakes opens with the iconic Molls Gap stage on Saturday morning - the famous test between Killarney and Kenmare features just once on the itinerary this year.
Two loops of The Healy Pass, Cod's Head and Ardgroom follow during the day, with Service in Castletownbere after each run over the Healy Pass.
The final stage of the day is Kilmackil-
Thomas Randles (Killarney & District Motor Club Chairman), Noel
O'Sullivan
and Cormac Casey (KC Print and Clerk of the course) at the launch of the Assess Ireland International Rally of the Lakes at The Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney on Sunday. The rally will take place on May 4th and 5th. Picture: Eamonn
logue before the crews head back to Killarney for the overnight halt.
Sunday's action is in the Rathmore and Gneeveguilla areas, east of Killarney, and features six stages in all, consisting of two loops of Gortnagane, Meentoges and Ballintourig, with one service in the middle of the day, at the Liebherr Container Crane factory in Fossa.
“I can't thank the dedicated team at Killarney and District Motor Club enough for their support over the last few months,” said Clerk of the Course Cormac Casey.
“We have the entry, we have the stages, we have the crowds coming, now all we need is a bit of fine weather to make it a perfect weekend.”
Devine and O’Sullivan will be followed over the Start Ramp in Killarney town centre on Friday evening by Killarney and District Motor Club members Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin in their Ford Fiesta Rally 2.
With two wins achieved so far this year on the Galway International and West Cork rallies, plus a second-place finish recorded on the Circuit of Ireland, Cronin, and Galvin head to their native southwest this weekend for the Assess Ireland International Rally of the Lakes as leaders of the 2024 Irish Tarmac Rally Championship.
Mike Neligan (Knocknagoshel) and John Hurley (Tralee) are also celebrating 40 years of motorsport. Their first rally was
the 1984 Rally of the Lakes.
Ken O'Neill and Ronald Riordan will contest their first rally together in six years in a newly acquired class 13 Ford Escort. Killarney and District Motor Club chairman Thomas Randles will have Darragh Lynch as co-driver for the first time. Darragh’s father Diarmuid was Randles’ regular co-driver for many years.
Three sets of local brothers are entered in the rally. Charlie Hickey will be co-driven by his daughter Charlene while his brother John will be co-driven by his daughter Michelle.
Fossa-based Sam Leach will drive a Honda Civic for the second time and his brother Robert is making the trip from Wexford to compete.
Ken O’Neill’s brother Raymond is also competing in an Escort.
The O’Donoghue family is well-represented on the entry list too. Colin is the top seed in his Escort, his father Kevin will drive a BMW M3, and his father-inlaw Tadgh O’Sullivan is out in another Escort as is Colin’s brother-in-law Kevin Kelleher.
Killarney-based Tipperary woman Louise Bourke is making her rally debut in a Reen’s of Rathmore-supported Peugeot 208. She is competing in the junior element of the rally which takes place across all six of the Sunday stages.

Boxing brothers win All-Ireland gold
PA CASEY 35KG
Pa Casey's journey to becoming an All-Ireland champion in his debut championship season is a testament to his talent, dedication, and the unwavering support of his family and coaches. From his roots in Killarney Pa's rise through the ranks of amateur boxing has been nothing short of remarkable.
Making his debut at the prestigious National Stadium, Pa seized the opportunity with gusto, dominating his opponents and earning a well-deserved place in the final. In a thrilling showdown against a talented boxer from St. Michaels Athy in Kildare, Pa delivered a masterful performance, clinching the national title with a commanding 5/0 victory.
JAMESIE CASEY’S FIFTH NATIONAL TITLE
His brother Jamesie’s stellar performance at the All-Ireland championships highlights his skill, determination, and strategic prowess in the ring. Competing in the J1 57kg category, Jamesie faced stiff competition throughout the tournament, but he rose to the challenge with
remarkable composure and execution.
Facing off against a skilled boxer from Dublin, Jamesie delivered a masterful performance, earning a hard-fought 3/2 decision and clinching the gold medal. His ability to adapt to different opponents and execute his game plan with precision was instrumental in his success.
In addition to the individual triumphs, Sliabh Luachra Boxing Club celebrated a collective victory, with a total of three gold, two silver, and one bronze medalists among the seven boxers entered into the championships. The club's success is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and support of its members, coaches, and sponsors.
The achievements at the All-Ireland championships follow a string of victories at the Munster Championships, where the club secured seven titles and four silver medals. The tireless efforts and commitment of the coaches, like James Casey Sr and including new additions James Linnane and Mary Murphy, have played a crucial role in the club's success, ensuring that boxers receive the training and support they need to excel in the sport.
Killarney Camera Club’s recent competition with the theme of ‘Natural Light Portrait’ proved very exciting. In the Unrestricted category two photographs finished on equal points in first place. Nikki Foley shared the top spot with Iryna Halaieva. Nikki’s photo which is titled ‘Winter Sun’ was taken on a very cold winter morning in Tipperary. “The morning winter sun was perfect to take a natural light portrait. My young model has been photographed many times since she was very small, and has perfected looking into the lens,” she said.
The apple of Iryna’s eye! Lots of faces with many different expressions were on view in Killarney Camera Club’s ‘Natural Light Portrait’ competition. The photo was taken in her home country of Ukraine five years ago. “This was my first environmental portraiture experience. I was lucky with the model, as David, my son, is a professional model, who immediately understood his mother’s idea for the photoshoot,” she said. “It took us little time to create a beautiful story and show everything as I had planned and visualised it beforehand. Golden hour and good weather conditions helped us to relax and just enjoy the process.”

The 5th & 6th Year KCC art students with Ms Mahony, their art teacher, and Doreen Duggan SNA took a trip to Siamsa Tíre in Tralee on Tuesday to see the exhibition titled ‘WORK’ from the Department of Creative Arts at the Kerry College of Further Education.
WORK is the culmination of the learners' efforts for the academic year. It was a proud moment for Ms Mahony as 3 of her art students
who did their leaving cert last year in Killarney Community College were exhibiting their art work - Jennifer Lyne, Lucas Bergman and Grace Myers. Jennifer and Lucas presented to students around and explained the work they had to complete. They were also on hand to answer any questions students had.
It was a great experience for senior students to see what work is completed in art courses in their own county.
Huge congratulations to Erin Doheny, class of 2023, for achieving the joint highest marks in the Leaving Certificate Design and Communication Graphics Exam! CLIFFORD
In loving memory of Ellen Clifford (nee O’Shea) Two Mile School, Killarney 6th May 2023.
As we lovingly remember our dear Ellen on her first anniversary, we, her family, express our deep gratitude to everyone who sympathised and supported us in our great loss.
Our thanks to everyone who called to our home, attended the wake and funeral, sent mass cards posted messages on line and contributed to Kerry Palliative Care in memory of Ellen.
We thank her friend Fr. Tom, Fr. Niall PP, and the other priests who concelebrated Ellen’s mass, said the rosary in our home and supported us in so many ways. Thanks to Jimmy, our sacristan in Fossa.
Thanks also to John, Jerry and Paud O’ Donoghue for the moving music at her funeral mass. Our thanks to Mike, Mary and staff in O’Shea’s Funeral Directors for their help and support.
We greatly appreciate the support of our neighbours, friends and community during Ellen’s illness and at the time of her death. This includes those who helped us prepare the house, supplied food and did so many practical, kind and helpful things for us. We will be forever grateful.
The guards of honour at her funeral were a lovely tribute to Ellen. We thank the GAA Community, led by Fossa, Ballymacelligott Club, Kerry Co. Board and senior team management and players and so many more from the GAA family in Kerry, East Kerry and further afield. There was great kindness and understanding shown to our family from our friends and colleagues in the GAA world.
Ellen’s colleagues from the Department of Justice (past and present) and colleagues from the NSSO were a central part of the guard of honour. They were also kind, supportive and helpful throughout her illness and we really appreciate this. Ellen was blessed with the loveliest of friends and thank you so much for the comfort and laughter you all brought to her.
We would like to thank the many people in the medical world who helped Ellen in the last years of her life, including her oncology teams in Kerry and Cork University hospitals, her doctor, Rosemary Kelliher, and the teams in Ross Medical Practice and Kennelly’s Reeks Pharmacy.
The Palliative Care team in Kerry University Hospital and the South Kerry Community Palliative Care were just tremendous in so many ways and the support from Margaret the night nurse at the end of her life made such a difference. You are all such good, kind and helpful people.
Eimear Hallissey, our neighbour and friend was a constant throughout and was an outstanding support.
Ellen is lovingly remembered by Dermot, Paudie, David and Shelly, and their partners, and Oigi, her much loved dad Pat, her sisters and brothers, her extended family, local community, and many friends.

5TH ANNIVERSARY
CRONIN
In loving memory of Brendan Cronin Mangerton Rd, Muckross, Killarney who died on 2nd May 2019.
The Harp that once through Tara’s halls
The soul of music shed Now hangs as mute on Tara’s walls
As if that soul were fled
So sleeps the pride of former days
So glory thrill is o’er
And hearts, that once beat high for praise Now feel that pulse no more.
No more to chiefs and ladies bright
The harp of Tara swells
The chord alone, that breaks at night It’s tale of ruin tells
Thus Freedom now so seldom wakes The only throb she gives Is when some heart indignant breaks To show that still she lives.

Foley back in the mix
Star full back returns to training ahead of Munster final
Kerry full back Jason Foley could be set for sensational return to the Kerry team after recovering from injury quicker than was originally expected. Worried supporters were lighting candles for the Ballydonoghue man when he went down with a nasty looking ankle ligament injury against Roscommon on St Patrick’s Day and it appears as though their prayers have been answered.
It was feared that the pacy defender was going to miss the entirety of the Munster Championship – if not some, or all, of the Sam Maguire group stage as well – but he is already back in training and apparently ready for action ahead of Sunday’s Munster final. Foley has been an integral part of Kerry’s defence for several years, starting 44 league and championship games in a row before that awkward landing in Athlone two-and-a-half months ago.
Tadhg Morley has slipped back into the full back line while his teammate has been in the treatment room but the consensus is that Foley will be needed to man the last line of Kerry’s defence if they are to mount a serious All-Ireland charge again this summer. Morley is more suited to the centre back role and repositioning him here would also free
up Gavin White to return to the wing. Whether or not manager Jack O’Connor opts to fast-track Foley back into his starting line-up remains to be seen. The Kingdom are overwhelming favourites to beat Clare in this weekend’s provincial decider at Cusack Park so O’Connor may decide to hold his firstchoice number 3 in reserve. Kerry are set to name their team this evening (Friday) at 8pm.
Another player who is in contention to make his comeback is dynamic half back Brian Ó Beaglaoich. The man from An Ghaeltacht missed most of the league with a hamstring injury and he was unfortunate to pick up an illness during the team’s pre-championship training camp in Portugal. Like Foley, he is now back training with the squad and as a regular starter throughout O’Connor’s tenure, it would be no surprise if he is recalled to the first 15.
O’Connor could well stick with the forwards who started against Cork but the likes of Paul Geaney, Stephen O’Brien, Tony Brosnan and Killian Spillane will be hoping to force their way into the conversation.
Kerry v Clare takes place at 1.45pm on Sunday in Ennis. The game will be live on RTÉ.
It was feared that the pacy defender was going to at least miss the Munster Championship

- Draw made at Croke Park for Sam Maguire group stage
- Kerry set for weaker-looking group if they beat Clare
The draw for the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (aka the Sam Maguire Cup) group stage was made in Dublin this week and, if they beat Clare on Sunday, Munster hopefuls Kerry will be heading for the weakest-looking group on paper.
The Munster champions – be they Kerry or Clare – will end up in Group 4 alongside the Monaghan, Meath and the losers of the Leinster final between Dublin and Louth. The Dubs are unbackable favourites to win their 14th consecutive provincial title so the Wee County will more than likely find themselves in Group 4 with neighbours Meath and Monaghan.
The trio will be joined by Kerry if Jack O’Connor’s men overcome the challenge of Mark Fitzgerald’s Clare at Cusack Park. They will be expected to do so, especially when one considers
the hammering they gave the Banner County in 2023. The Kingdom scored five goals en route to a 15-point win in Limerick and if they are as tuned in this time around as they were last time, they should secure an equally comfortable win.
The losers of Sunday’s Munster final will end up in a very challenging Group 2 with the champions of Ulster (Donegal or Armagh), Tyrone, and Cork.
In Group 1, the winners of the Connacht final between Galway and Mayo will come up against the losers of the Ulster final, last year’s All-Ireland semi-finalists Derry, and Westmeath.
Dublin will enter Group 2 with victory over Louth where they will meet the losers of Galway v Mayo, Roscommon, and Cavan.
If Kerry do advance to the Sam Maguire group stage as Munster champi-
ons, their first game will be against Monaghan in Killarney on May 18/19. They will then travel to Páirc Tailteann in Navan to take on Meath on June 1/2. Finally, they will travel to a neutral venue to take on the Leinster losers (possibly Louth in Portlaoise, in a repeat of their Round 3 fixture in 2023).
As was the case last season, the top team in each group will go straight through the All-Ireland quarter-finals with second and third moving on to the preliminary quarter-finals.
If Kerry lose on Sunday and wind up in Group 3, their first game will be at home to Cork, their second game will be away to Tyrone, and their final game will be at a neutral venue against the Ulster champions.
No prizes for guessing Jack O’Connor’s preferred route to the All-Ireland series…

Former Kerry footballer Eamonn Fitzgerald previews this weekend’s Munster final between Clare and Kerry
When will they be milking the cows in Clare next week? Will it be Monday or stretched out to the end of the week?
Jack O’Connor will remind the present Kerry team of what happened in 1992. When the final whistle blew, RTÉ match commentator Marty Morrissey, a Clare man, uttered that famous phrase: “And I can tell you that there won’t be a cow milked in County Clare for at least a week”.
The final score was Clare 2-10 Kerry 0-12. More about the Kerry men’s game versus Clare later in this article but first up it’s the Kerry ladies.
Imagine the psychological barrier the Kerry minor girls faced against Cork, the old enemy. Cork were bidding for their 14th such title in a row and had already
beaten this Kerry team in the group stages. It seemed a fait accompli, another title for the Rebels. Kerry had not won since 1995.
Kudos go leor to the Kerry youngsters who defeated Cork in Mallow on a scoreline of 3-10 to 0-13, especially to the seven from East Kerry: Aoise O’Donoghue, Kathryn Ryan (both Glenflesk), Grace Murphy (Rathmore), Andrea Murphy (Legion), Katie Doe (Firies), Leah McMahon (Dr Crokes) and Seodhla Colleran (Fossa).
The Kerry seniors also beat Cork at Brosna and they have now qualified to progress so their game against Waterford this weekend is really a dead rubber. It will be another opportunity for Darragh and Declan to give minutes to the substitutes.
REMEMBER 1992
Rosey, Séamus Moynihan, Perter O’Leary and others will not forget that upset when Clare stunned Kerry in 1992. Legion’s
O’Leary saved Kerry’s blushes early on when he stopped a penalty struck by Gerry Killeen, if memory serves me correctly.
Clare went on to score a famous victory. They had reached the Munster football final for the first time in 43 years and were seeking a title they had won only once previously - and that was in 1917. Kerry had 63 Munster titles. Then there was the Massacre at Miltown (Malbay) with a score of Kerry 9-21 Clare 1-9. Fact or fiction? It is one of those times when fact is stranger than fiction, but it is a fact.
That is not a prediction of the outcome of next Sunday’s Munster football final between Kerry and Clare at Cusack Park, Ennis. Nevertheless, it is a fact that Kerry hammered hapless Clare in the good old days of the Golden Years of Kerry football. Goals galore. Three from Pat Spillane, two from Bomber Liston and
one each from Mikey Sheehy and Shin (Vincent) O’Connor. As for the 21 points, that’s too long a story to tell. That was July 1st 1979. Miltown Malbay is a beautiful village in West Clare, the home of Willie Clancy, the brilliant Irish uilleann piper, flute player and whistle player. He is still remembered every July at the Willy Clancy Festival.
There will not be any such massacre in Ennis on Sunday in the Park named after Michael Cusack, the man from Carron who was a founding member of the GAA. Nevertheless, it will be a major upset if Clare can defeat Kerry. Recall last year's Munster final when the Clifford brothers
RIVALS: Paul Geaney of Kerry tussles with Cillian Rouine of Clare during last year's Munster final.

Photo:on the cards in Ennis
ran riot despite the circumstances under which they played. The final score was 5-14 to 0-15 at the TUS Gaelic Grounds in Limerick. Captain David Clifford led the way, accumulating a personal tally of 2-6, while his brother Paudie pulled the strings and orchestrated the magical moments for so many of those scores. Clare are no longer a pushover and have performed well at minor and U20 levels. Mark Fitzgerald is in charge, and he has made a difference. In the semi-final they proved far too good for Waterford, winning 2-20 to 1-9 away at Fraher Field, Dungarvan. That set them up for a repeat of last year's final. Top scorers againt Waterford were C Downes (0-4, one 45); E McMahon (1-3, one free), A Griffin (0-5), and M McInerney (1-2, one free).
The Kerry full-back line in particular will need to be very alert, especially with such a dangerous Clare full-forward line. Jason Foley has been back in training and Kerry may well start to give him game time before the serious business begins in earnest. If they don’t start Foley, Tiger (Morley) will wear the number 3 geansaí, as he did against Cok here in the Fitzgerald Stadium. It was wonderful to see All-Star Tom O'Sullivan back in action after a long layoff through injury. He waltzed upfield and scored his customary three points. Whatever about him scoring, I would much prefer to see him concentrate on his primary duty and that is to prevent the man he is supposed to be marking from scoring. I recall two glorious points he scored in the league game versus Mayo two years ago; his own man scored five. A leaking bucket will always beat the person coming from the well. Stay at home, Tom. You’re an All-Star defender. I appreciate that game play has evolved, and the traditional roles have changed for all players.
I also hope that Shane Ryan, a proven top-class goalkeeper, will refrain from straying far from his goal line. I realise that the role of a goalkeeper has evolved as have other positions. Now he is a key man in picking out a free Kerry player from the kickout, be that long or short. Since retaining possession at all costs, whether it means a pass back, lateral, or anything but going forward is par for the course in most games now, goalkeepers go outfield to assist fellow players who are under pressure.
No problem with that within the D, but much wants more and the temptation to progress further up field is great. However, the outcome is not a guaranteed dividend for the risk taken. The simplest of turnovers and even the greatest sprinter will not make it back to the
unguarded bearna baol. In recent times we've seen it with the hapless Ódhran Lynch caught stranded outfield and lobbed for not just for one goal but two, so Jimmy was winning once more with Donegal
There was a perfect example a few weeks ago in the Fitzgerald Stadium when the Tipperary ladies’ keeper was out in the middle of the park. Louise Ní Mhuirchearthaigh raised the green flag with a delightfully-placed 40-yard lob.
Cailin glic, cailín gasta. She isn't reigning Footballer of the Year for nothing.
Shane Ryan is too good a keeper to be caught AWOL. He has perfected the three key roles of a goalkeeper: stop shots, the judicious placing of the kickout to the most advantaged teammate, and controlling the backs. He mans the control tower and he is in the best position to alert his frontmen to possible or probable scoring chances. That’s why he is number 1 and of course, you won't see Clucko straying out from goal.
One of the recommendations that I have sent to the Rules Revision Committee is that a goalkeeper may not stray outside the D. Penalty for violation. Hop ball on the 20-metre line. Anything can happen in that danger area. I have other suggestions, but that’s for another article in the future.
Back to Cusack Park. I was disappointed in both of the Kerry midfielders against Cork. I expect a big improvement on Sunday.
Kerry scored five goals in last year's Munster final. Two will do this time.
Kerry’s goalscoring machine has dried up, mainly because the two Cliffords are not as dominant as Kerry needs them to be. Seánie O’Shea will hit six points and maybe a goal. Dara Moynihan is a much-improved player this year and can score. Two against. How about three against Clare, Dara?
This is Jack O’Connor’s 10th Munster final as a manager, and he knows better than anyone how tricky winning a Munster final can be. I wish him and his management the best of luck and hope that if Plan A is not working on the day, move to Plan B, but take corrective action early. On any game day, a player may not be playing up to his usual high reliable standard and gets the run-a-round from his opponent. Then move fast. If the right corner back is having a torrid day, switch him to the other corner. If he is still in trouble take him off. However, when the team is selected for the next game that same player should be started. Anyone can have an off day,
HARSH CRITICISM
I do feel that some spectators are very harsh on players who are struggling on a particular day. Does one ever know what personal worries, family commitments and considerations or a myriad of other reasons why the player is off form?
Last year the Cliffords said a final goodbye to their mother. They will also be remembering her on her first anniversary. In the Cork game, Seán Powter was played at centre forward but was withdrawn in the second half. He will be
taking his final exams in medicine in four weeks’ time. Priorities?
My good friends in Clare inform me that the curse of Biddy Early and her witchcraft only relates to the hurlers and losing a nine-point lead to Limerick is further proof of that. Limerick’s Drive for Five continues apace and that that will gladden the hearts of proud Limerick men in Killarney, Ray and Noel (from Doon).
KERRY HURLERS
Following that marvellous first round win over a very fancied Westmeath team, the Kerry hurlers steamed on against Down at Tralee, winning by eight points (0-26 to 2-12). Once again Maurice O’Connor was the scorer-inchief with 12 points.
The ultimate aim is to win the Joe McDonagh Cup, the prize that has eluded them so often. Next Sunday will be a real rest in a top-of-the-table clash versus Laois at Austin Stack Park. They will need home venue against Laois.
It’s great to see versatile Luke Crowley on the team at corner forward. His home club Glenflesk could have done with his scoring in their county football league game on Sunday last. He is much in demand by Glenflesk, the Kerry U20 footballers and the Kerry hurlers while balancing that with a very busy time in his personal life as he sits his first year exams in Dublin. The travel takes its toll on players.
His father John and grandfather Derry were great Kerry football stars in their respective eras.
Packed Mounthawk Park to host Kerry v Cork derby
All roads lead to Mounthawk Park, Tralee tonight (Friday) as Kerry FC welcome their prestigious neighbours Cork City to the home of football in the Kingdom. Kick-off is at 7.45pm.
Kerry’s eight-game unbeaten streak came to an end last week against Athlone Town. They fell to a 1-2 defeat as Kennedy Amechi’s first-half penalty wasn’t enough to earn any points for Conor McCarthy’s side; Ruben Ferreira and Carl Mujaguzi found the target to turn the tide in Athlone’s favour. After this defeat, Kerry currently find themselves in second last place in the League of Ireland First Division. Athlone, meanwhile, remain in sixth.
As for tonight’s visitors, they arrive as league leaders with an impressive re-
FRIDAY, MAY 3
cord of eight wins and four draws from twelve matches.
Cork came out on top of the reverse fixture at Turners Cross on opening night when a brace from Jack Doherty secured the victory for the Leesiders. They have gone from strength to strength since then and their early season form surely makes them favourites to earn promotion and return to the Premier Division at the first time of asking.
The Cork City match is the first game of a double header weekend for Kerry as they face Longford Town away on Bank Holiday Monday. Longford are the only team in the league with a worse record than Kerry. They are yet to win a game and the Kerrymen will be hoping to extend that winless run for one more week at least.
Kick-off at Bishopsgate is at 5pm.

| Nadal bows out at Madrid swansong
At the Madrid Open this week, an emotional Rafael Nadal lost 7-5 6-4 against Jiří Lehečka of the Czech Republic in what was likely to be his last match in the Spanish capital.
The 22-time grand slam champion is trying to rediscover some form after a spell that has been spoiled by injury problems. He is expected to wind down his glittering career before too long. Nadal was determined to play in Madrid on one final occasion in an attempt to clinch his sixth title despite lingering doubts about his physical condition. He won his first three matches at the tournament before losing to Lehečka in the fourth round.
“Today is an emotional day, of course, today is an unforgettable day in terms of saying goodbye to Madrid,” Nadal said. “But it’s one of the places – or even probably the place – where I’ve received more love and support during all these years.
“My career keeps going and I have my personal goals for the next couple of weeks.”
| Vunipola fined for resisting arrest in Spain
England international rugby player Billy Vunipola has been fined and handed a suspended four-month prison sentence for resisting arrest at a nightclub in Mallorca.
The Balearic Islands Superior Court of Justice said that Vunipola must pay a fine of €240 as well as €500 in compensation to the injured party after an express trial was held on Sunday.
The English player was charged with serious disobedience to an authority and resisting arrest.
“The accused admitted that he was in a nightclub in Palma where some police officers came because of a fight,” the court statement said.
“The young man [Vunipola] stated that he did not heed the orders of the police and at one point, as they tried to subdue him, he got over one of them, causing an injury.”
| Kane reveals Bellingham mind games
Harry Kane has revealed Jude Bellingham said "you're going to go left of the keeper" as the Real Madrid midfielder tried to put off his England team-mate before the Bayern Munich forward took his penalty in the Champions League semi-final.
Bellingham could be seen communicating something to Kane as the Bayern striker stepped up to take the spot kick in the 57th minute of the first leg. However the England captain scored his penalty to give Bayern a 2-1 lead at Allianz Arena - although Vinicius Jr later also converted from the spot as the match ended all square.
Kane said afterwards he did not hear what Bellingham said on the pitch but that the 20-year-old told him after the match.
“In the moment, I didn’t know what he said but I spoke to him after and he said: ‘I know you’re going to go left of the keeper'.
"On the pitch, I knew he was there but I didn’t know what he said. But I went left anyway.”

U17 CUP FINAL: The Park 0-4 Killarney Athletic. A solid win for the lads in this keenly contested Cup final in Tralee this evening. The Park started strongly, and the game was very even for the first 25 minutes. Jake broke the deadlock shortly after when he finished his rebound into the corner of the net via the post. This seemed to settle our lads and they began to get more of a foothold on the game. Luke then got his head to a back post cross to make it 2-0 just before the halftime whistle blew. We asked the lads to come out strong again at the start of the second half and we went 3-0 up after about 5 minutes when Liam O’Brien set Jake up with a great cross to finish to the net. Luke then turned provider with a lovely ball over the top for the onrushing Brian to control and finish to the net. The remainder of the game was us having a lot of possession and trying to control the game and see it out. The Park kept going and were unlucky not to get a goal towards the end. A brilliant squad performance all round and great to get some silverware in the cabinet for the club. A special mention has to be made for Cillian Murphy at the back, the quiet man from Muckross who is teak tough and has pace to burn. He was immense today. It was also great to see John Murphy lift the cup, Mr consistency who always gives 100%. Another man of few words but he made a great speech. We’ll enjoy tonight but then our focus will shift to the upcoming league final. Thanks to the Park for a very sporting game.
THE ACADEMY: We wrapped up the academy for the season this morning in glorious sunshine. We had John Fleming from Muckross Creamery onsite with a selection of ice cream for all. Big thanks to John for his patience and good humour in taking the time to make sure all kids and coaches got an ice cream and went home happy. Last but not least, a huge thank you to all the coaches who give their time each week and without whom the academy would not be possible. Enjoy the Sunday morning sleep ins for the summer and hopefully see you back again in September.

However it was St Brendan’s Park who nearly went in front after they hit the crossbar. Celtic went in front when Conor Doherty played in Cillian Scannell who ran on and finished to the net. Celtic were close again after JJ Landers put in a cross that only needed a touch. Shortly after Cillian Scannell placed JJ Landers whose shot was kept out by a combination of the keeper and the post. Cillian Scannell was just wide afterwards. Celtic led 1-0 at the break. Park came out and were close to equalising after good build up play, but it was Celtic who extended their lead through an OG. Celtic made it 3 when Conor Doherty placed Cillian Scannell who found the net from long range. Park never gave up but Celtic went 4up after Conor Doherty found the far corner. Celtic completed their scoring when Cillian Scannell put in a cross that went all the way to the net. Well done to the players and coaches for a fantastic season.
GIRLS: U17 Domino's Pizza Cup - Killarney Celtic 5-0 Dingle Bay Rovers. Ali Bowler 2, Amelia Carroll Kelly, Clodagh Moriarty, Michele O'Connor. Celtic led 1-0 at the break after Amelia Carroll Kelly scored late in the 1st half. With the backing of the wind in the 2nd Celtic began to dominate. Ali Bowler scored 2 before Michelle O'Connor had Celtic 4up. Clodagh Moriarty scored direct from a corner to complete the scoring. Well done to the players and coaches on a fine win.
U15 MARY LYNE CUP: Killarney Celtic 1-2 St Brendan’s Park AET. Ali Bowler. In a cracking contest Celtic just came up short after extra time.
U12 LEAGUE: Ballyhar Dynamos 1-5 Killarney Celtic. Leah Mannix 3, Seodhna O'Sullivan, OG. Celtic put in a strong performance to take the points last Sunday.

Killarney Legion GAA
SENIOR MEN: A tough battle ensued in Milltown in Round five of the County League. The County Intermediate Champions are formidable at home where you will earn every score. David O’Sullivan and Ryan O’Grady were looking sharp in the first half and alongside Will Shine they contributed the points which saw the sides level at half time, 0-5 apiece.
Cian Gammell put his stamp on the second half, his two points alongside substitute Finbarr Murphys brace helping to open up a 0-12 to 0-9 lead heading into the closing stages. There are few accurate forwards in the county than Eanna O’Connor and his two points narrowed it to the minimum, but a rearguard action ensured the two points headed back to Killarney. Rathmore are the visitors to Direen in Round 6, the game throwing in at 7.30 this Friday night, May 3rd. The Senior B team had a fine win over Ballylongford in Direen on Friday evening. It helped them bounce back from that disappointing defeat to Fossa. A solid team effort but young Daire Murphys input certainly stood out.
SENIOR LADIES: The senior ladies were in Donal Curtin Cup action on Sunday morning at home to ISG. The old sayings of goals win games and a game of 2 halves certainly to this game. Starting the game brightly and looking in charge with a commanding half time lead of 1-12 to 1-03, all looked in hand. But ISG started the second half on a better footing to score a brace of goals to keep in touch. Legion couldn’t capitalise on some good opportunities, and it was to prove costly. A couple of penalties led to more green flags for the visitors, and they closed out the game two points to the good. Final score Killarney Legion 1-19 ISG 5-09.
U12 GIRLS: Spa were the visitors to Direen on Tuesday evening where the two clubs both fielded two teams to put on a great hour of entertainment. With no games this week coming it's a chance to return to the training ground to tidy up some of the skills.
U14 GIRLS: The U14 Girls had their first competitive outing in Beaufort during the week. Having the better of the first half they held a four-point half time lead, but the Mid Kerry side put in a strong second half shift. So much so that it took a last-minute goal to secure the points. They followed that win up with a trip to North Kerry, Moyvane providing the opposition. A great team performance against a determined opponent saw them return south with the win.

Crokes GAA
SFL DIV. 1: Dr. Crokes 2:16 Glenflesk 2:06. Our senior footballers remain unbeaten after a comprehensive win over Glenflesk in round 5 of the Senior Football League. Cian McMahon opened the scoring with a fine point from play from the throw in. 1 minute later, Michael Potts was unlucky not to hit the back of the net after two brilliant attempts at goal, Micheal Burns subsequently tipped the rebounding ball over the bar. 4 minutes into the game Glenflesk were awarded a penalty, that Bryan O'Shea was unlucky not to save. We were awarded our own penalty 14 minutes later when Cian McMahon was brought down in the small square. Daithi Casey did well to convert from the penalty spot. We went in leading 1:11 to 1:02 at the break. We got the second half underway in the best way possible, with a Micheal Burns goal in the first minute. Again, just like the first half, Glenflesk got a second goal of their own in the 18th minute. Bryan O'Shea put on a great performance between post to pull off two more fantastic saves in the dying minutes of the game. We now sit at the top of the table going in to round 6. We led by 1-8 to 1-4 at half time following a penalty from Chris O’Leary after a trip on Mark O’Shea. Features of the first half were that we had eight different scorers and brought two fantastic saves from the Gaeltacht goalie. The second half saw a great struggle between the teams with the visitors getting two further goals and our lads responding with some great points. In the final moments Philip O’Leary secured the league points and we now look forward to the visit of Milltown Castlemaine this Saturday at 7 pm. Keith O’Leary (with two 45's) Chris O’Leary, Damien O’Leary, Gary O’Leary, Paul O’Shea and Philip O’Leary when introduced stood out on this occasion.

Glenflesk GAA
RESULT: Credit Union Senior County Football League Division 1 - Dr Crokes 2-16 Glenflesk 2-06. Match Report by Michael Healy. Dr Crokes showed why they lead the way in Division 1 of the County Senior Football League, with a dominant display at home to Glenflesk, who despite the defeat, played some positive football themselves, in an open game that saw 2 penalties scored, and 2 other terrific goals. The League leader’s started at a lightning speed, taking a 4-point lead early, with Micheal Burns getting 2 of the scores. Glenflesk’s first attack ended with a penalty opportunity, as Patrick Darcy was hauled down after being sent in on goal by Callum Cronin’s superb pass. Jeff O’Donoghue’s well struck penalty hit the net, and Glenflesk found themselves only a point down, despite hardly seeing any of the ball in the opening stages. They followed up the goal with 2 Ian Roche point’s, the second 1 almost being a goal. With Patrick Darcy having to go off after the penalty foul, Glenflesk struggled as an attacking force, and Crokes went on a run of 2 – 09 without reply. Daithí Casey burying his penalty for the first goal, before Kieran O’Leary classily flicked the ball up to Burns, who hammered the ball into the corner of the net early in the second half. Despite the torrent of score’s put on them, Glenflesk had moments of quality themselves. O’Donoghue cleverly dummied into space to fire over a classy point 1 instance, while Cronin once again found the net for the third game in a row, firing low to the net from a tight angle. The result though was never in doubt, as Glenflesk were shown the standard needed to compete consistently at the highest level in Kerry Club football. A tough experience today, on what has been an otherwise very promising start to life in Division 1 Football. 1. Eoin Moynihan 2. Denis O’Connor, 3. Daniel O’Brien, 18. Joe Rudden, 6. Emmett Finnan, 7. Michael Mullane, 8. Tommy Bowler (0 – 2), 9. Jeff O’Donoghue (1 – 1), 10. Callum Cronin (1 –0), 11. Kevin Bowler, 12. Jamie Moynihan, 17. Dara Fleming, 14. Patrick Darcy, 15. Ian Roche (0 – 2), 25. Jack O’Donoghue, 19. Eoghan Kelly (0 – 1), 20. Danny Lucey, 23. Darragh McCormick.
