LOCAL ELECTION 2024
The National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Board of Trustees of Muckross House, Killarney, have announced a comprehensive programme of events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the opening of Muckross House to the public, beginning on June 14.
Now one of Ireland's premier tourist attractions, the house was opened as a Kerry Folk Museum on June 14, 1964, and is run in partnership by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the voluntary Board of Trustees.
Local dignitaries, some current and former staff as well as some current and former Trustees will attend a formal ceremony at Muckross House, on the day. There will also be free admission to Muckross House and Muckross Traditional Farms throughout the weekend (14-16 June) where the guides and Traditional Farm staff will provide their usual high standard of interpretation for visitors. Several major developments have been undertaken by NPWS in partnership with the Trustees of Muckross House since 1964, including restoration work, the
The 17 candidates marks an increase of seven since the 2019 election and the highest number of candidates in living memory for the Killarney area.
Five years ago, 12,794 people cast their vote marking a turn-out of just over 60 percent.
There are over 40 polling stations in the district, the booths are open from 7am to 10pm, after which the boxes are
transferred to the county centre at Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre.
Counting in the Killarney area will begin around 5pm Saturday with the first count results expected around 8pm that evening.
Counting will continue on Sunday until all seven seats are taken. It is unlikely but not impossible that counting will also take place on Monday.

development of Muckross Traditional Farms, building the Muckross Schoolhouse, nurturing of traditional crafts, such as weaving, pottery and bookbinding, opening the Garden Restaurant and Craftshop and the development of an in-

An estimated one million people visit the Muckross area annually. Of these, 120,000 visit Muckross House, and 65,000 visit Muckross Traditional Farms. The Trustees of Muckross House current-
ly employ more than 100 people.
"While Muckross is an undoubted magnet for tourists, it is also a huge attraction for the local community who visit and support the facilities all year round. Local people have a deep love of Muckross and we hope they will take part in and enjoy our celebrations to mark this historic year,'' said trustees chairman, Marcus Treacy.
Meanwhile, two long-term signature projects related to music and dance are also planned by the Trustees of Muckross House as part of the celebrations. Composer J. J. O'Shea is composing a musical suite, telling the story of Muckross through music. Also, a traditional dance project, based in north Kerry and carried out 40 years ago by Dr Catherine Foley, is being revisited to see how the dance has evolved since then.

Construction to begin soon on new sports hall at Dereen
The three clubs behind the new sports facility at Dereen say they are hopeful that construction can begin later this year.
The new sports hall is a project spearheaded by the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club with an input and commitment from St Paul’s Basketball Club and Killarney Judo Club.
Last year Kerry County Council earmarked land for the community hall development which is adjacent to the Killarney Celtic grounds and Killarney Legion GAA Club.
Plans are in place for the construction of a single-storey building accommodating a double basketball hall, multi-functional room, changing rooms, toilets, a gym, storage rooms and a coffee room.
The development will also include a judo room, an outdoor playground, car parking and associated roadway improvements.
“‘We are delighted that the new development in Dereen is starting to take shape. It is expected that the builders for the

Paudie to be remembered at annual Garda blitz
The Girls Player of the Tournament in the annual Killarney Garda National Schools 7-a-side Football Blitz will receive the Garda Paudie Twohig Memorial Trophy.
The annual blitz takes place on Monday (June 10) in Fitzgerald Stadium.
A total of 22 schools will battle it out on the pitch in the competition, which is now in its 20th year.
New for this year is the Garda Paudie Twohig Memorial Trophy.
Garda Twohig was a hugely popular member of An Garda Síochána and was a much-loved member of the local community. He passed way in 2021 after a long battle with four melanoma.
One of the organisers, Garda Eddie Walsh from Killarney Garda Station, said:
"Every school looks forward to playing in Fitzgerald Stadium. We are very grateful to Der Brosnan and all his staff at the stadium. Thanks to Pat O’Sullivan chairman of Kerry County Board for his support.”
The blitz was launched at Killarney Garda Station on Thursday this week.
The launch was attended by current and former Kerry footballers including David Clifford, Tom Spillane, Aidan O’Mahony and Liam Brosnan.
Sponsors include Tom Spillane Auctioneers, Irish Drain Services, Kelly’s Londis (Rathmore and Milltown) O’Keefe’s Oils.
The Dylan Crowley Under 11 Memorial Tournament launch

Twelve under-11 teams will compete in the always popular tournament, they are Firies, Kilcummin, Rathmore, Legion, Listry, Kenmare, Glenflesk, Currow, Scartag-
lin, Cordal, Spa and Gneeveguilla. Games start at 10am sharp with the finals at 3pm.
“As always a great day of fun and football is promised while remembering a very special young man, Dylan Crowley who passed away at a young age,” said an event organiser.
Calls for water fountain scheme to reduce plastic bottles
There are calls to introduce a public drinking water fountain scheme it Killarney.
A new scheme was launched in Dublin this week by the Minister of State with special responsibility for Communications and Circular Economy, Ossian Smyth TD, and the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD.
The aim of the scheme is to reduce plastic bottle use and provide widespread public access to drinking water.
€2 million in funding from the Circular Economy Fund will be made available for the rollout of public water infrastructure through Uisce Éireann, Local Authorities and the National Federation of Group Water Schemes.
Initially the scheme will focus on the installation of drinking fountains within
public buildings, with future phases of the scheme to include the installation of drinking fountains in public outdoor spaces.
“Killarney needs water refill stations and these must be visible and signed,” said Green Party candidate Diarmaid Griffin. “I welcome to roll out of water stations and that sustainability is being encouraged in a very tangible way,”
“The health and environmental impacts of bottled water are becoming clearer all the time. The local council needs to be the leaders in encouraging sustainability by installing these water stations and making them easy to find,”
“Killarney is a single use coffee cup free town thanks to a grassroots initiative. Now local government and central government must put their shoulder to the wheel.”
Housing is a big issue
Housing continues to be one of the biggest issues facing our area despite the fact that there have been positive developments in Killarney and Barraduff.
That’s according to Cllr Maura Healy Rae who has been listening to the electorate on the doorsteps over the last few weeks.
She said: “There is substantial need for more social housing to address the waiting list which now has in excess of 1,500 applicants.
“Vacant and void properties need to be brought back into use.
“Furthermore affordable housing development needs to take place so that families and single people can have a realistic opportunity of purchasing a home.
“I have time and time again campaigned
for St.Finans landbank to be used for social and affordable housing development.
“I want to continue my work in this regard. I am very active in assisting elderly people and people with disabilities to make applications for housing grants to make their homes more suitable for their needs.”

Dangers of deer
Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill has again raised the dangers posed by deer wandering on our roads throughout the county.
He feels that since the major fire in Killarney National Park a few years ago, Deer have been dispersed away from their former home to practically every parish in Kerry.
“Everywhere you travel now, you come across deer crossing roads in the county, causing accidents and causing drivers to swerve to avoid hitting them. These animals by nature are unpredictable or skittish as one constituent described them and you cannot judge in which direction they will run to, when you come on them” said the Rossbeigh based Councillor.
"Every day I am hearing about deer jumping out onto the roads all around South Kerry. On a regular basis, you will come across Deer in Killorglin, Beaufort, Dromin, Cromane, Glenbeigh, Glencar, Kells, Cahersiveen and throughout the entire Iveragh Peninsula. I am hearing reports of accidents and near misses on almost a daily basis and there will be more major accidents and sadly, fatalities, if action is not taken.”
"Another issue of course, is the matter of insurance. If your sheep or cattle jump out onto the road, then you are responsible for any damage caused to a vehicle. If a deer jumps out and damages your car, you are left high and dry and this is not fair.”
“A deer round up and cull must be organised to ensure the safety of people travelling our roads. I am calling again on the National Parks and Wildlife Service to recognise the fact that many of our deer no longer live within the confines of Killarney National Park and to initiate a major drive to return these deer to their original environment where they can be successfully managed” said Councillor Cahill.
“With no natural predator in Ireland for deer, the herds are growing at a phenomenal rate, causing mortal danger to road users and spreading ticks that carry Lyme Disease. This is a major Health and Safety issue, which I believe, the Road Safety Authority must take into consideration. We must deal with Deer now.”
Healy calls for Primary Care Unit
at District Hospital
Fine Gael's local election candidate Dermot Healy has vowed to turn the existing Community Hospital into a Primary Care Unit if elected. With the new Community Hospital nearing completion on the Bypass Road, Mr Healy is concerned that the existing premises will join the list of derelict and unused public buildings in the town. Several buildings in the greater Killarney area , like St Finan’s Hospital, the Aras Phadriag and old Pretty Polly factory have become derelict despite years of promises that they would be turned into
€1.4m
in
funding for Kerry roads damaged by rainfall
Local election candidates have welcomed €1.4m in additional funding for regional and local roads in County Kerry damaged by persistent rainfall over the winter and spring months.
Minister of State Jack Chambers TD has announced €30 million in emergency funds to deal specifically with the impact of climate change, which has contributed to a deterioration in the surface quality of certain parts of the roads network.
Cllr Niall Kelleher, who is running in the Killarney local Election Area on Friday, said: “I’m delighted to receive confirmation from Fianna Fáil Minister Jack Chambers that €1.4 has been allocated for regional and local roads in Co Kerry.
“We need to keep our roads safe. This emergency investment will give Kerry County Council the funds necessary to repair potholes and other damage on our roads caused by the extremely
heavy rainfall over the winter and spring months.
“In persistent wet conditions, water seepage contributes to damage such as the development of potholes or pavement collapse.
"These funds will significantly improve the worst impacted areas of the road network."
Green Party candidate Diarmuid Griffin added: “I am glad that the effects of climate change on our road infrastructure is being addressed by the department of transport.
“Higher rates of rainfall in the past year have had an impact on road surfaces. This is particularly evident around Killarney.
“We need to make our roads safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. These additional funds will help remedy some roads.
“I hope that the funds are distributed fairly and used where needed.”
€200,000 funding to repair and upgrade the Jarvey Lane
A total of €200,000 is to be spent to repair and upgrade the Jarvey Lane which runs between Killarney town and the main entrance of Killarney National Park
The 1 km shared pedestrian/cyclist surface has been allocated funding under Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure.
Minister for Education and Kerry T.D. Norma Foley has welcomed confirmation of over €1 million in funding for several outdoor recreation projects in Kerry including the Jarvey Lane.
The investment, under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme will be key to enhancing forest walks, cycleways, rivers, lakes and beaches across the county.
It will also provide a boost to the local economy by attracting more visitors to our rural communities.
Minister Foley said that the facilities and amenities that the Government are providing funding for under this scheme
are making a real difference in communities right across Kerry.
“This announcement will hugely benefit the health and well-being of people of all ages and is so important in terms of attracting visitors to our towns and villages.
These amenities are here for us all to enjoy,” Minister Foley said.
The funding includes:
€445,140 Construction of a 1.5km extension to the Kilderry Wood Walk in Milltown in mid-Kerry, creating a looped countryside amenity walk of €200,000 to further extend the Ballyseedy Wood Amenity Trail
€200,000 to repair and upgrade the Jarvey Lane.
€198,000 for recreational support facilities at three Blue Flag Beaches: Ballinskelligs, Banna and Rossbeigh. This includes cycle stands, seating and picnic areas, drinking fountains, shower areas and lifeguard facilities.
something more useful.
The current Community Hospital on St Margaret’s Road could meet the same fate if it is not earmarked for future use.
Mr Healy believes it is a perfect location for an accident and emergency unit.
“To think that Killarney could have up to 30,000 people in the town during the height of the summer and that if they cut their finger and needed stiches they have to go to Tralee, Mallow or even Bantry to get seen to,” said Mr Healy.
“If elected I will make this one of my main objectives.”
Extension to Beaufort Burial Ground
It has been confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that a deal has been reached for the extension to Beaufort Burial Ground.
The Killarney Advertiser understand that contracts have been issued for signing and this should be concluded very shortly.
“I have continuously worked on this over the last council term and I'm glad that by the skin of its teeth it will be over the line before the new council term starts,” said Cllr Johnny Healy Rae who is contesting this week’s local elections in the Kenmare District.
“I want to thank everyone involved. I'm especially glad that I played my part in dealing with Kerry County Council and the landowner involved as much as I possibly could. I want to thank the land owner in a very special way for dealing with Kerry County Council on this parcel of land as it was not offered for sale but he has dealt with them in a professional and nice manor all the way along. “
“I also want to thank Kerry County Coun-
cil management and staff for all the work that they have put into this, particularly Moira Murrell, Martin O’Donoghue and Paul Neary, who played a leading role in concluding this.”
“I'm glad that the people of the parish of Beaufort will not have to be taken to another parish to be buried as it would be very hurtful to them not to be buried alongside their own loved ones.”
Eamonn Ryan sees mobility issues at railway station first-hand
Green Party leader and Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan visited Killarney Train Station this week to meet local election candidate Diarmaid Griffin and members of the Killarney Access Group.
The meeting began with the group telling the minister of the need for a bridge to link Killarney's Train Station with the adjacent Bus Station.
This has been a campaign of theirs for a number of years.
Minister Ryan then made the journey with the group from the train station, to see first-hand how people with mobility issues, wheelchair users, and pedestri-
ans must circumnavigate the Killarney Outlet Centre to reach the bus station.
“The need for a bridge with a lift is essential to join our town's two stations and make it more convenient and accessible for all,” said Griffin. “I was glad to be in a position to speak with Minister Ryan on this and other measures that will help transport in the town. We spoke about accessibility, traffic congestion and active travel during his visit and the Minister was very receptive and generous with his time'.
Minister Ryan concluded his stay with a canvass of the town where he spoke to many locals about the elections.
Honouring the Kerry women of the revolutionary period
Local councillor Marie Moloney is one of five female politicians behind a plan to honour Kerry women and their role during the Irish Independence and Civil War periods of Irish history.
Kerry County Council is to invite expressions of interest next week for the commissioning and development of a commemorative and artistic piece which will honour the role played by women in Kerry during the revolutionary period between 1912 and 1923.
The project follows a joint motion by the
five female members of Kerry County Council who called for the development and commissioning of a meaningful and lasting commemorative piece which would reflect the significant and diverse roles and activities of women and their involvement in the campaign for Irish Independence at the beginning of the twentieth century.
A Working Group, including the five female councillors, has been developing a design brief, and the Council intends to publish a detailed brief for the memorial next week and expressions of interest will be invited.

Provision should be made for people with severe disabilities
At a recent meeting of Kerry County Council Cllr Marie Moloney moved a motion requesting that in every Council and Housing Association build provision be made for people with severe disabilities who need housing.
Some people on the Social Housing list have either an adult or a child with very special physical needs. They need scope in their accommodation for the provision of a hoist on a track from bedroom to bathroom, some being peg fed who need specialised facilities.
“I have helped people who have had to wait a number of years while the Council Officials constantly viewed houses for sale in an effort to find a suitable house that could be adapted to suit the needs of the applicants,” she said.
“If every development by the Council and the Housing bodies built just one bespoke house to meet the individuals needs it would eliminate the need for a search for an adequate house. Kerry Council will provide such a build but unfortunately Kerry County Council build little or no houses in the Killarney Electoral Area but there is scope for Housing Bodies to build bespoke houses.‘

“With the Ring of Kerry cycle only four weeks away, this is the perfect warm-up, or for anybody looking for a really well run sportive while supporting Down Syndrome Kerry and Killarney Cycling Club.”

Book on school life in aid of Kerry Hospice
Following its successful launch in April, the book ‘Futures From the Past’ has been flying off the shelves.
A collaboration between students participating in St Brendan’s College Writer in Residence scheme and poet Noel King’s active retired writers, this book of poems and stories has already raised €800 for Kerry Hospice.
The money was presented to Cathal
Walshe of Kerry Hospice this week. Spearheaded by King, and facilitated by teacher Mary Denise Lyons, this volume gives an interesting insight into school life, past, present and future – and all for a good cause.
Futures from the Past is available from St Brendan’s College and O’Connor’s Newsagents in Killarney; Priced at €9, all proceeds go to Kerry Hospice. All remaining funds will be donated in September.
First recorded woodpecker family in National Park
In recent weeks, staff and visitors at Killarney National Park have been entertained by the iconic sound of unexpected visitors – the Great Spotted Woodpecker.
A breeding pair was confirmed for the first time to have produced a small number of chicks in the Park.
The chicks are becoming more and more vocal each day and preparing to fledge.
Sightings of the Great Spotted Woodpeakesr, (Mórchnagaire breac) continue to be monitored.
The woodpecker became extinct during the 17th century, however they have made a comeback in Ireland, colonising broadleaved woodland - their prime habitat - using their powerful beak and shock absorbing skull to carve out their home in the trees. Photos:

el of activity and the variety of creative fun filled activity on offer.”
Earlier in the year, the Arts Office at Kerry County Council carried out an extensive consultation with many young people in Kerry to see what they wanted to see in this year’s Cruinniú na nÓg and their feedback has informed this year’s programme.
Nationally, Cruinniú na nÓg has issued a call out for young people to ‘Dare to
create’.
The Kerry Creative Ireland Office issued an open call for artists and creatives to respond with ideas too for Cruinniú na nÓg.
There is something for all ages and creative interests in this year’s programme.
Some of the highlights include STEAM workshops, Crafts such a pottery, felting and printing, dance, music and theatre workshops and performances, creative writing and comic book workshops,
painting and puppet making workshops, and circus skills training.
“I am delighted to see so many quality events on offer, for free, to allow children and young people have time to enjoy a creative event,” stated Arts Officer and Creative Ireland Coordinator, Kate Kennelly.
“Hopefully many families and young people will take up what is on offer and enjoy finding a connection with creativity.”

Over 50,000 attend Ireland BikeFest 2024
Cruising, chrome and cracking good weather, Ireland BikeFest was the place to be across the June Bank Holiday weekend.
Over 50,000 visitors passed through the purpose-built Bike Village at The Gleneagle Hotel over the June bank holiday weekend making this, the 16th festival, the biggest yet. Visitors travelled from as far afield as South Africa and the US as well as from right across the UK and mainland Europe.
“We are delighted to report that Ireland BikeFest 2024 was a resounding success,” said Shane O’Driscoll, Festival Director of Ireland BikeFest. “It contributed to a bumper weekend for the whole of Kerry and further afield.”
“A special thank you to all of the organisations, sponsors, suppliers, food vendors and volunteers for your support and hard work in custom-building the only festival of its kind in Ireland. It certainly takes a lot of people to fuel a gathering like this, so a special thank you to Harley-Davidson® UK and Ireland, Fáilte Ireland, The Gleneagle Hotel, Destination Killarney Ltd., Kerry County Council, Waterford
Harley-Davidson®, Dublin Harley-Davidson®, Celtic Thunder Chapter Ireland, Gaelic Chapter Ireland, Belfast Chapter Northern Ireland, An Garda Síochána Killarney, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and all Killarney’s local businesses.”
Joy Quinn from county Galway was the lucky winner of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind raffle to win a Harley-Davidson Sportster XL883C PRL.
“Thank you to the big-hearted bikers and aspiring bikers who bought raffle tickets and made donations to support our work. We raised over €21,000 which will go towards the training of our incredible dogs.
Thank you also to our dedicated volunteers and the festival organisers for your support,” said Chris Bennett, Regional Development Officer with Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Killarney Club 7s
The sun was shining once again for an epic weekend in Spa for the third Annual Killarney Club 7s tournament.
Huge crowds descended on Spa for two days of football, food, fun and lots of live music. The 7-a-side tournament was hotly contested as 36 men's and ladies' teams from both Ireland and abroad battled it out to win the 2024 Cup & Shield titles.
The men’s Cup Final was won by Dunshaughlin Royal Gaels, while the Shield Final was won by Confey GAA who defeated Kildimo/Pallaskenry GAA on penalties. In the Ladies competition, the Cup Final was won by Clonakilty LGFA who defeated Castlehaven LGFA while the Shield Final was a local derby as Legion LGFA defeated the Spa Ladies.
“Well done to all the referees, officials and all the clubs that travelled to Spa this weekend and took part in 7s football tournament,” said club PRO Leanne
Cronin.
“Off the pitches, the kids play area was full all weekend with plenty of fun for the younger groups, the food court was busy for the full TWO days while the Heineken Tent was rocking all weekend with live music over the two days with acts like Super Céilí, Ruaile Buaile and Chasing Abbey.”
“Congratulations to everyone who made this another hugely successful and enjoyable weekend yet again. Credit to the brilliant committee who have spent months putting plans in place, and to all the volunteers who helped out this weekend without whom the event could not happen, and of course to all our sponsors, neighbours and local community who helped make it another incredible weekend in Spa.”

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEYDavid beats Goliath in "Big Mac" trademark dispute
Irish fast-food chain Supermac's has emerged victorious in its long-running legal battle with McDonald's over the trademark protection of the iconic "Big Mac" name in the European Union. The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled in favour of Supermac's, significantly limiting the scope of McDonald's trademark for "Big Mac."
The dispute began in 2017 when Su-
permac's challenged McDonald's broad trademark on "Big Mac," arguing it restricted their own expansion within the EU. The court agreed with Supermac's, finding McDonald's failed to demonstrate genuine use of "Big Mac" for chicken products, restaurants, and drive-through services.
This decision paves the way for Supermac's to potentially register its own trademark across Europe and expand its footprint. “This is a significant victory for small businesses throughout the world,”
said Pat McDonagh, Supermac's Managing Director. He characterized the legal battle as a "David versus Goliath" scenario, highlighting the challenges smaller companies face against industry giants.
McDonald's still retains trademark protection for "Big Mac" on beef and poultry burgers, but the ruling weakens their overall hold on the name within the EU. McDonald's has the option to appeal the decision within two months.
Arsenal fan found guilty of headbutting Roy Keane
In a verdict delivered yesterday, a jury found 43-year-old Scott Law guilty of assaulting former Manchester United footballer and current pundit Roy Keane.
Law, an Arsenal supporter, confronted Keane after a match, reportedly during a post-game punditry segment filmed pitch-side. The prosecution argued that Law approached Keane in an aggressive manner, leading to the headbutt. Keane, who testified during the trial, maintained he felt threatened by Law's actions.
Law's defense lawyer argued his client did not intend to assault Keane and that any contact was accidental. They also cast doubt on Keane's claims, suggesting his view of events might have been biased.
The judge, however, dismissed the defense's arguments, finding the prosecution successfully proved Law's guilt of common assault. Law is now awaiting sentencing.
Aer Lingus summer travel uncertainty
Travellers planning trips in late June or early July with Aer Lingus face potential disruption as the airline's pilots are currently voting on possible strike action. The Irish Air Lines Pilots' Association (IALPA) is locked in a dispute with Aer Lingus
over pay increases.
IALPA is pushing for a significant pay rise for its members. The union says they rejected a recommendation from the Irish Labour Court that would have increased pilot pay by 9.25%. Aer Lingus, on the other hand, considers the pilots' de-
mands for a 27% increase to be "entirely unnecessary."
The pilots' union is recommending their members vote in favour of "industrial action, up to and including strike action."
The ballot will run until June 12th, leaving travellers in limbo as they wait for the outcome.
Local authority announces loan for renovations
First-time buyers in Ireland seeking an alternative path to homeownership now have a helping hand.
The Department of Housing recently announced the Local Authority Purchase and Renovation Loan (LAPR), a new initiative aimed at revitalising vacant and derelict properties.
This program expands on the existing Local Authority Home Loan. Previously, the loan only funded the purchase of habitable homes. The LAPR broadens the scope to include both the acquisition and renovation of properties eligible for the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant.
There are hundreds if not thousands of empty or derelict housing units across Kerry, presenting an opportunity to increase housing stock while restoring neglected properties. The LAPR aims
to bridge the financial gap for first-time buyers who are willing to take on renovation projects.
"The extension of local authority mortgage lending to the purchase and renovation of all homes eligible for the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant will help people struggling to complete the purchase and renovation of a vacant or derelict property," said Minister O'Brien.
The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant has already proven popular, with over 8,100 applications received to date. The LAPR provides a natural complement, offering the financial backing necessary to turn these fixer-uppers into dream homes.
Eligibility for the LAPR hinges on meeting two sets of criteria: the standard Local Authority mortgage lending criteria and the specific project requirements outlined in the LAPR scheme.
Trial
begins for
six accused in Thomas Dooley murder
The murder trial of six individuals accused in the death of Thomas Dooley commenced this week at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork.
Dooley, a 43-year-old father of seven, was allegedly attacked and fatally stabbed at Rathass Cemetery in Tralee on October 5, 2022, while attending a funeral.
The prosecution, led by Dean Kelly SC, laid out the case against the six defendants. The prosecution allege that Thom-
ECB lower interest rates
The European Central Bank (ECB) announced a decrease in interest rates yesterday, marking the first such cut since March 2016.
The ECB lowered its three key interest rates by 25 basis points, bringing the main refinancing rate to 4.25%. This decision comes after a period of nine months where rates had remained steady.
The move reflects a shift in the ECB's monetary policy stance as inflation shows signs of significant decline. Since the Governing Council meeting in September 2023, inflation has fallen by more than 2.5 percentage points. The ECB now projects inflation to
reach its target of 2% in 2025.
“Based on our updated assessment of the inflation outlook,” stated ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos, “it is now appropriate to moderate the degree of monetary policy restriction.”
While inflation is on a downward trend, the ECB acknowledges ongoing challenges. Domestic price pressures remain elevated due to wage growth, and inflation is likely to stay above target for much of next year.
President Christine Lagarde reiterated the ECB's commitment to a data-dependent approach, suggesting future rate cuts will be determined on a meeting-by-meeting basis.
New Yorkers dazzled by Manhattanhenge
The city that never sleeps witnessed a different kind of brilliance this week as New York City celebrated Manhattanhenge.
Twice a year, the setting sun aligns perfectly with the east-west streets of Manhattan's grid, creating a stunning celestial spectacle. Skyscrapers transform into golden giants, bathed in the warm glow of the descending sun.
This natural wonder is a favourite among photographers and New Yorkers alike. Sidewalks become impromp-
tu viewing platforms as residents and visitors steal a moment to witness the magic. The first Manhattanhenge of the year happened in late May, and the city was treated to a second dazzling display this week.
The precise timing of Manhattanhenge creates a fleeting window of opportunity. For a brief period, the sun dips below the horizon, framed by the canyons of buildings on specific cross streets. This year, the best views were enjoyed from 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd, and 57th Streets, around 8:15 pm.
as Dooley suffered fatal stab wounds during an assault by multiple attackers in front of his horrified family, including his wife Siobhan who was also injured while trying to intervene.
The six accused have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Presiding over the case is Ms. Justice Mary Ellen Ring. Jury selection is complete, and witness testimonies have begun. The trial is anticipated to be lengthy, with over 200 witnesses expected to be called and potentially lasting up to two months.
Gaelscoil Faithleann win Cumann na mBunscol final
Girls from sixth class at Gaelscoil Faithleann were celebrating this week after winning Cumann na mBunscol Urban 2 Final for the first time.
Aoife Ní Chéilleachair captained the team and all girls played a very competitive but fair game as they overcame Firies National School in the final that was played at Tralee’s Austin Stacks club grounds.
The final score was 3-9 to Gaelscoil to 2-7 for the Firies team.
Top scorers on the night were Leah Ní Mhainchín who scored three goals and a point and Abbie Ní Scannláin scoring seven of the nine points. They were assisted by a strong group of
footballers and it was such a team effort from start to finish.
“Our girls had never won this competition before,” said School Principal Lisa Ní Iarlaithe.
“Comhghairdeas libh a chailíní iontacha. Go raibh maith agaibh to Múinteoirí Treasa agus Liadh who were girls coaches. All staff at the Gaelscoil are beyond proud of the wonderful performance of the young ladies.”
Killarney for Palestine clarifies 4th of July stance
Killarney for Palestine have moved to clarify a statement made by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce last week.
The group, which had made representation to the Chamber in relation to the 4th of July Festival, have taken issue with a number of the festival activities being cancelled, claiming that the listed activities were not the source of contention.
“We wish to highlight that at no point did representatives of Killarney for Palestine request the removal of the public showing of movies, the free concert or the
fireworks. When advised by the Chamber of the proposed removal of these events, Killarney for Palestine, among other things, advised that the removal of fireworks, live band and cinema is unnecessary and one of the main attractions for locals,” said Killarney for Palestine spokesperson Sally McMonagle.
“As far as Killarney for Palestine is concerned, the removal of the public showing of movies, the free concert and the fireworks is not in response to Killarney for Palestine concerns, but a Chamber decision unrelated to our concerns.”

Rob Duggan was the best of the Killarney and District Motor Club contingent at Sunday’s Lyons Motor Group Circuit of Munster Rally in Limerick.
On his first outing since winning the modified section of the Killarney Historic Rally last year the Aghadoe-based driver finished 14th overall and second in class 14. A faulty throttle positioning sensor was his only issue across the eight-stage rally in the Kildimo area.
Joined by fellow Killarney co-driver Kieran O’Donoghue for the first time, the Kerry crew had to give their best to local hero Chris O’Callaghan in the race for Class 14 honours.
“We did do course car together a good few years ago in Honda Civic and always said we would go for a proper run together,” said Duggan. “Kieran did a great job on the notes, he was comfortable from the word go.”
The rally was the fifth round of the Triton Showers-backed Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship and defending class 13 champions David Slattery and Denis Coffey were delighted to record their first finish since the Killarney Historic Rally.
Their 2024 season has been blighted by mechanical woes, a string of non-finishes in Mayo, the Rally of the Lakes and Birr means that the defence of their national title is on the back foot.
The Ford Escort crew were delighted to put that run of bad luck behind them and record third in class in Limerick.
“We are not fully over that bridge yet; we had intercom issues on the first loop but it is nice to get a finish too.”
They also won the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship 'Drive of the Day
Award' for setting the best Class 13 stage time on the opening test.
Other KDMC finishers included Class 14 contestants; Denis Hickey/Eoin O'Leary and Jack Kelleher/Michael White. Kerry Motor Club’s Paul Stryker and KDMC’c Edwin Walsh were sixth in Class 12 in their Toyota Corolla.

Housing commission issues a damning report
The Housing Commission, set up as part of the programme for government and tasked with examining varying housing issues, have issued a report this week which says that only a radical strategic reset of policy will work to address the current issues in the housing market.
The report clearly outlined some key points:
“A major issue of concern to the Commission is Ireland’s housing deficit,” the authors state, saying that emergency action is needed to combat it.
In an analysis of affordability by county, the Commission compares average annual earnings data for couples in each county looking to buy a home with house prices there.
The analysis finds that Wicklow, Dublin, and Kerry are the least affordable counties for people looking to buy.
The Commission recommends an increase in the proportion of social and cost-rental housing to meet current needs.
The report states that the private rental sector should be reformed in order to balance the rights of tenants and landlords
The Commission also states that market rents should be regulated “fairly and effectively by reforming the current system of rent regulation and establishing a system of ‘Reference Rents’.
The Commission further recommends reforms to the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) and the Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS), in order to reset them as short- to medium-term support measures for households eligible for social housing.

Where can I use it?
You can use your European Health Insurance Card in any European Union or European Economic Area (EEA) country
and in Switzerland. Currently, the EEA comprises of the 27 member states of the European Union together with Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein. As Andorra and Monaco are not part of the EU or EEA, your EHIC is not accepted there. You should get private health insurance instead.
Can I use it in the UK?
If you are an Irish citizen, you have access to healthcare under the Common Travel Area while visiting the UK. However, other EU citizens should continue to use the EHIC, which is still accepted in the UK.
How much does a European Health Insurance Card cost?
There is no fee for the European Health Insurance Card or a Temporary Replacement Certificate. Renewing a European Health Insurance Card is also free.
What if I don't have my EHIC before I travel?
If you don't have your European Health Insurance Card for any reason, you can get a Temporary Replacement Certificate. This Certificate gives you the same entitlement as the Card, but for a shorter period.
You can apply online for this Certificate, in-person or by post to your Local Health Office. You can only receive a Temporary Replacement Certificate for yourself.
What it covers
• Free or reduced cost public healthcare
in any of the EU and EEA countries
• A temporary stay of up to 3 months
• Pre-existing medical conditions
• Routine maternity care – if you’re not going there to give birth
• If you’re a student studying abroad, you’ll be covered for up to an academic year.
What it does not cover
• Private healthcare
• The cost to fly you back to Ireland
• Ongoing or permanent healthcare
• Medical expenses if your reason for going abroad is to have treatment
Will I have to pay anything for healthcare with my EHIC?
In some EU member states, you may have to make some payment towards the cost of the services you receive, just as people in that state do. You will not receive a re-fund for this or for private healthcare.
How can I get a refund from the HSE if I paid for healthcare while abroad? You may be able to get a refund if you had to pay because you did not have your EHIC card with you or because the healthcare providers charged you by mistake.
Apply for a refund by email. Send your receipts to E126.Refunds@hse.ie. Or email them to overseas.medservices@ hse.ie if you live in Dublin, Wicklow or Kildare.
The HSE will send an E126 form to the health authorities in the other state to
find out:
• If you used a public health service
• How much of a refund is due
When the HSE receive the completed E126 form from the other state, the HSE can see if a refund is due or not. Further information is available on the HSE website.
How do I apply?
You complete an application form and send the completed form to your Local Health Office. You can download the form or pick one up from your local Citizens Information Centre. If you have a medical card or drug payment scheme card you can apply on-line.
If you already had an EHIC but it has expired, you can renew it online if you have your old EHIC number and your PPS number, provided that your address has not changed.
If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie You can also contact us by telephone or email: Tralee: 0818 07 7860

Is this our year?
Kerry ladies set for another run at elusive All-Ireland
The 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Championship group stage gets underway this weekend and Kerry are hoping that this is the year their unlucky run in All-Ireland finals comes to end.
Declan Quill and Darragh Long’s side have just come up short in the last two deciders in Croke Park – against Meath in 2022 and Dublin in 2023 - but this year they will mount their All-Ireland charge as Munster champions after finally taking down Cork in last month’s provincial decider.
The significance of that victory cannot be overstated from a morale point of view and the girls in green and gold will surely be attacking these forthcoming group games with a renewed sense of vigour and purpose.
First up is an away match against Donegal on Sunday. Throw-in time in Ballybofey is 1.05pm. The match will be shown live on TG4.
The Kingdom will then be at home to
Waterford in their other group game. The top two teams from each threeteam pool will advance to the quarter-finals with the top seed earning home advantage.
In this weekend’s other fixtures, Armagh host Meath on Saturday, Cork are away to Laois on Sunday, and Mayo entertain All-Ireland champions Dublin, also on Sunday. Mayo v Dublin will also be shown live on TG4.
Last week, the LGFA and TG4 confirmed
live TV coverage of 15 fixtures in this year’s All-Ireland Championship, while all senior ties not shown live on TV will be live-streamed via the Spórt TG4 YouTube channel.
The LGFA also revealed that the 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship semi-finals will be played as a double-header at Glenisk O’Connor Park in Tullamore, Co. Offaly on Saturday, July 20.
Portlaoise confirmed as venue for Louth rematch
Kerry in strong position to top Group 4 after comprehensive win in Meath
The Kerry footballers will head to O’Moore Park in Portlaoise to take on Louth on Sunday week, just as they did 12 months ago when they beat the Wee County by 28 points.
Another win - or even a draw - would guarantee the Munster champions a place in the last eight of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. Defeat would see them slip into a preliminary quarter-final against a third place team from another pool. Kerry v Louth will not be shown on RTÉ or GAAGO.
Jack O’Connor’s men are in pole position in Group 4 following last weekend’s victory over Meath in Navan. David Clifford hit 2-2 and rampaging defenders
Tom O’Sullivan (0-2) and Brian Ó Beaglaoich (0-3) contributed stylish points as The Kingdom ran out 2-18 to 0-9 winners at Páirc Tailteann.
Clifford’s two strikes – the first an unstoppable bullet and the second a
half-deflected effort that squirmed over the line – were Kerry's first goals of the 2024 championship after the side failed to raise a green flag against Cork, Clare or Monaghan.
The result was never in doubt on Sunday although it did take a while for the favourites to open up a lead, and the final scoreline was perhaps a little flattering in some regards.
Meath remain pointless and they now face a do or die clash with Monaghan to see who will finish third and advance to the knockout phase, and who will be eliminated from the Sam Maguire.
A draw will suffice for Monaghan after they picked up a point against Louth in Round 2.
As for Louth themselves, they will have a home preliminary quarter-final if they draw or lose to Kerry. Of course, if they win, they will jump up to first place and move straight on to the quarters.
Elsewhere in the senior championship, Kerry’s neighbours Cork enjoyed a fantastic home win against Ulster champions Donegal in Páirc Uí Rinn. The Rebels put three goals past Jim McGuinness’ All-Ireland hopefuls en route to a 3-9 to 0-16 win and they now lead the way in Group 3 with Tyrone standing between them and a berth in the quarters. Whatever happens in their final match, Cork will advance from the group stage regardless.
Tyrone, who hammered Clare last weekend, and Donegal are still both in contention for that top spot.
Division 1 champions Derry are under serious pressure to stay in the championship following their demoralising 3-17 to 0-15 defeat to Armagh. Mickey Harte’s charges are bottom of Group 1 heading into the final round and they will need to beat Westmeath just to qualify for the preliminaries.
Armagh and Galway are out in front on four points each and a draw will do the Orchard County when the sides meet in Sligo next weekend.
As for Group 2, Dublin comfortably saw off the challenge of Cavan, banging in five goals in the process. They should face a sterner test when they play Mayo in Roscommon in Round 3. A draw or a win against Cavan will see Roscommon through to the next round.
Meanwhile, the All-Ireland minor football championship reaches the quarter-final stage this weekend with Kerry taking on Roscommon on Saturday at 6.30pm in Ennis.
The match forms part of a double header with Mayo v Cork (4.30pm). The other two quarter-finals take place at Breffni Park the same day. Dublin take on Derry and Longford face Armagh.

Photo: Michael P Ryan/Sportsfile.Football Review Committee must rein in the keepers
In Part 2 of his letter to Eamonn Fitzmaurice, former Kerry goalkeeper Eamonn Fitzgerald outlines his views on the role of the number 1
The goalkeeper plays a key role not only as a shot-stopper but also as the player in the best position to marshal his/her backs as the opposition mounts an attack in search of a score.
The modern kickout, introduced by Stephen Cluxton, is strategic in finding a teammate to start the move for a score at the other end. Since holding on to possession at all costs seems to be the sine qua non of the modern game, the preferred option for the goalkeeper is often to go short and then work the ball up the field over and back - and back again. Basketball and soccer.
Eamonn, you have the statistical evidence from the scientific survey of some years ago which revealed that two out of three kickouts were short. And by short I mean a 20-metre side-foot flick out to the cornerback on either side of him and in 50% of these taps the ball was handpassed back to the goalkeeper (which is no longer allowed).
My suggestion is that when the ball goes out of play after a score or a wide, the goalkeeper is not allowed to kick out the ball until the referee blows the whistle to restart play. Nowadays goalkeepers are well able to kick long and accurately. All kickouts could be taken from the furthest point of the D and travel beyond the 45. That is not a problem for modern goalkeepers. Players could still be allowed inside the 45, but the goalkeeper may not kick to a teammate within the 45. The penalty for transgression would be a throw-up at the D or a 20-metre free. A ball may not be passed back once it goes beyond the halfway line and that is key. Currently, some goalkeepers leave their goal line and travel even into the opposition’s half of the field. Too often a poorly executed pass is turned over and a smart forward will leg it and shoot into an unguarded goal. Heartbreak or hilarious, depending on your loyalties. I think of the image of the woman returning to her house already knowing that the loaf of bread was burning to a cinder, as Micheál O’Hehir described Mikey Sheehy’s famous goal against Dublin (“the greatest freak of all time”).
I suggest that the goalkeeper is not permitted beyond the D. Stay at home and concentrate on the primary duties of a goalkeeper:
KICKOUT KING: Dublin legend Stephen Cluxton revolutionised the kickout Photo: Seb Daly/ Sportsfile.CAUGHT OUT: Derry goalkeeper Odhran Lynch gets lobbed after straying from his goal
mind the gap and the bearna baol. This would avoid the farcical current situations where some goalkeepers are AWOL from their primary duties. Soldiers are suspended for such indiscretions and shenanigans.
SCRAP THE MARK
Scrap the mark as presently constituted. It is not fit for purpose. It was so loosely defined in its present format that strategists could exploit the weakness whereby a player could catch a ball cleanly at knee level and call a mark. Ridiculous. I favour equating a goal with four points and a point kicked from outside the 45 should be rewarded with two points. That does not apply to points from frees. It should also encourage players to attempt the long kick, especially with the aid of a strong breeze. It would also discourage players from fouling in that area. Scoring has a high entertainment value for spectators. Compare this with soccer where so many games end even without one score. Then you have 90 minutes of boredom. The late, observant Jimmy O’Brien said about a soccer match on TV: “You could go up to mass in the Friary and take your time before returning to the bar and still there wouldn’t even be a score. Nil-nil. Not for me.”
A goal currently merits the equivalent of three points, but it deserves more as a psychological boost to the losing team and a downer for the leaders at that time in the game. The defence has
been breached and the backs worry that another goal may follow. Reward the accurate long kicker with two points, kicked directly from the boot from outside the 45.
THE BLACK CARD
Black, yellow and red card systems should remain but the GAA must educate all concerned on what constitutes a black card etc. Referees are to be informed that persistent fouling by a player merits a card. In the first instance, the referee stops play and issues a warning first to the player and then a card follows, if the fouling persists. The game is football, not handball. On average 75% of all passes are handpasses and that is even true at All-Ireland final level. Allow the handpass as an important skill, but only allowed when players are going forward or the pass is executed going forward.
Review and change the master fixture list programme so that the intercounty fixtures are not demanding a result on the day. Avoid the unfair system of deciding a game on penalties. The overcrowded programme of games at the intercounty level and consequently on the club arising from the split season leads too often to the ultimatum to get a result on the day. Too often extra time does not suffice so it is down to penalties. Scrap some unnecessary competitions to free up more dates for replays.
TRAINING REGIME
In my view, GAA players train far too extensively, and the intensity is unsustainable for amateurs. At the intercounty level, players are committed to five nights a week, field, gym, pool etc. Some players go straight from work, travel many miles and it's midnight before they get home. Certain occupations militate against that level of commitment, especially farmers and the self-employed. What hope has a Galway player living and working on the Aran Islands giving that commitment?
What about the Leitrim players working in Dublin, travelling through rush hour traffic to get to Carrick-on-Shannon?
They might do the heavy training and pull a hamstring and face the return journey to Dublin with no hope ever of winning Sam, or the Tailteann Cup?
My suggestion is that the number of training sessions should be reduced and so should the team management composition. Many county teams have 15 or more personnel in their back-up. The cost is prohibitive to pay this retinue and the same trend has crept into the club scene. More often than not an ‘outsider’ is sourced from outside the club, hoping s/he will work a miracle and, in simple terms, win the championship. Silver shines, gold glitters and faraway hills look greener.
There are other aspects of the game that I think have merit but they need to be fully trialled and then assessed as to their value to improve football as a spec-
tacle. Play 13-a-side. The big plus is that it would free up space on the field, limit the opportunities for fouling and be a godsend at club level in the areas of significant migration.
Take South Kerry as an example. With so many players emigrating to Dubai, Australia, the USA, or migrating to Dublin, they find it hard to muster 15 for a team. It is happening wholesale at minor level and even at the younger ages. Clubs have to amalgamate to field a team.
Also trial the game without the traditional pickup, just as it is part of the LGFA game. One of the areas of play where players get injured is as they are about to execute the pick-up as per rule. He is at his most vulnerable, bending down. In comes the back, probably fractionally late, maybe going for the ball (or thereabouts) and the soccer-style sliding tackle leads to many ankle injuries. If the bout of play happens near a sideline the temptation is to put the opponent out over the line. Picking the ball off the ground would save injuries and speed up the game. Look no further than the LGFA. It works.
Sin an méid, Eamonn. Good luck with your rule change proposals for Croke Park and hopefully they will help bring back genuine lovers of football, who are increasingly absent from the terraces. Today’s opinions and the areas covered in last week’s edition are personal and the old saying could well apply to rule changes: nobody’s opinion is worthlesseven a stopped clock is right twice a day!

Utility Trust St Paul’s are already gearing up for the 2023/24 Super League season and this past week the club announced the arrival of two key signings from the United States.
Gracen Kerr and Megan Ormiston will link up with James Fleming’s freshly promoted side with both players hoping to translate their stellar college form to the Irish league.
Kerr (23) is a point guard who averaged 16.5 points per game last season, helping Kentucky State University to return to the SIAC Championship finals for the first time since 2019 in the process. She was named on the SIAC All Star team and was also honoured as Player of the Year.
St Paul’s say the Annsonia, Connecticut native is a team player who brings others into the game. She is also adept when faced with a hard press.
Ormiston (also 23), who hails from Murietta, California, graduated from the University of Nevada in 2023. At 6’3” she can play at both the four and five positions where her height can be utilised. In her
final year she started all 31 games and led the team in both field goals and field goal percentage. She averaged 10 points per game.
In her high school years she set a school record of 23 rebounds.
The Killarney club are optimistic that Kerr and Ormiston can combine effectively as the Division 1 champions try to hit the ground running at the highest level of Irish basketball.
Consecutive home wins for impressive Kerry FC
Kerry FC secured back-to-back home league wins for the first time in the club’s history when they defeated 10-man Treaty United at home in Tralee on Monday.
An early goal by Kennedy Amechi – who was played in by a beautiful disguised pass by Ryan Kelliher – sent Kerry on their way and they doubled their advantage not long after half-time when Treaty player Evan O’Connor turned Ronan Teahan’s cross into his own net. Treaty were handed a lifeline when the referee awarded a penalty in their favour with 15 minutes to go and Enda Curran stepped up and converted to make it a nervy finale for the vociferous home supporters. The fact that Curran
was subsequently red-carded for an incident that left Ethan Kos on the floor holding his face dampened Treaty’s spirit, however, and Conor McCarthy’s boys in green held on for three valuable points.
The victory came on the back of Friday night’s 1-0 defeat away to Cobh Ramblers but it did mark their second consecutive home win following the previous triumph against Finn Harps (2-0) a fortnight ago.
The Kingdom are now second from bottom in the League of Ireland First Division, two points ahead of Longford and just three behind Treaty in eighth. Next up is an away fixture against the students of UCD at Belfield. That match takes place tonight (Friday) at 7.45pm.

HEALY FAMILY U15 CUP FINAL: Killarney Celtic 2-3 Mastergeeha. Despite a fantastic 2nd half Celtic went down to Mastergeeha in the Healy Family Cup Final. Celtic opened well with the breeze at their backs and were unlucky not to go ahead but it was Mastergeeha who got the breakthrough. Celtic regrouped and created chances but failed to take them and it was Mastergeeha who struck again. Just on half time Mastergeeha struck for a 3rd goal. Celtic could have folded facing the breeze and being 3 down but instead they rose again in the 2nd half and Ignacy Truchan got Celtic moving with a great finish. Kiernan Kelly got the 2nd and Celtic piled on the pressure forcing Mastergeeha to defend resolutely. Celtic hit the crossbar with their last effort but unfortunately it was not to be and Mastergeeha took the honours.

Killarney Legion GAA
SENIOR MEN: A disappointing result in Round 9 of the County League when our neighbours Dr Crokes held the upper hand all through. The result, 1-15 to 0-7, now means a win against An Ghaeltacht in Direen next Sunday at 2pm is imperative if we are to preserve our top flight status. Team: Brian Kelly, Darragh O’Doherty, Danny Sheahan, Peter O’Sullivan, Cian Gammell, Jonathon Lyne, Rob Leen, Darragh Lyne (Capt) Jamie Alade, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Will Shine (0-1), Finbarr Murphy (0-3), Peter McCarthy, David O’Sullivan (02), Micheal Devlin. Subs: Shaun Keane (0-1) for Finbarr Murphy, Ryan O’Grady for Eoghan O’Sullivan, Conor Gammell for Peter McCarthy, Mark Heffernan for Rob Leen.
KILLARNEY 7s: The Senior ladies competed in the well organised and very successful Killarney 7s over the weekend to great effect. Solid performances throughout the weekend saw them qualify for the Sunday morning quarter finals, where two wins set up a final against the hosts Spa. In a thrilling finale they were first out of blocks to hold out for the win. Well done to the entire squad, Ted Healy, John McCarthy, Orla Culloty et all for representing the club so well. Congratulations to Spa on a very well-run event.
FEILE: The U15 Ladies are off to the regional Feile finals being held at Moyle Rovers GAA in Co Tipperary on Saturday, June 29th. There will be many fundraising initiatives to help fund the Feile adventure. We are asking all our members to donate their plastic bottles and cans to help raise funds. They can be dropped to designated points in the club grounds (only items displaying the Re-Turn symbol are accepted). The club will also host a bingo night on this Friday night, June 7th, in the Killarney Plaza Hotel. A fun night is planned and as with all club function we ask for the full support of the club. Rounding off a busy weekend there is a U10 girls blitz on Saturday where a bake sale will be held. So whether its bingo or buns your support is needed.
U11 BOYS: Phase 2 of the County Go Games kicked off for our U11 boys on Thursday evening in Ballyrickard where Kerins O’Rahilly provided the opposition. Two good games of competitive football ensued, and some very impressive skills were on display by both teams. A big thank you to all parents who travelled and to our hosts Kerins O’Rahillys, who had their teams well drilled and provided a great challenge on the evening. Also, like ourselves, it is good to see the youths of the clubs taking up the whistle and reffing the games.
U13 BOYS: Well done to the U13 Boys who qualified for their respective County League final with a tremendous win over Rathmore in Rathbeg on Sunday morning. In glorious weather they started well and led 2-8 to 2-2 at half time. An onslaught from the hosts was weathered early in the second period and some smart point kicking saw the advantage extended to 2-15 to 2-5 by games end. They now face Finuge next weekend in the final, in what promises to be an interesting clash. Best of luck to team and management.
Spa GAA
KILLARNEY CLUB 7s: The sun was shining once again for an epic weekend in Spa for the 3rd Annual Killarney Club 7s tournament. Huge crowds descended on Spa for 2 days of football, food, fun and lots of live music. The 7-a-side tournament was hotly contested as 36 men’s and ladies teams from both Ireland and abroad battled it out to win the 2024 Cup & Shield titles. The men’s Cup Final was won by Dunshaughlin Royal Gaels, while the Shield Final was won by Confey GAA who defeated Kildimo/ Pallaskenry GAA on penalties. In the Ladies competition, the Cup Final was won by Clonakilty LGFA who defeated Castlehaven LGFA while the Shield Final was a local derby as Legion LGFA defeated the Spa Ladies. Well done to all the referees, officials and all the clubs that travelled to Spa this weekend and took part in 7s football tournament. Off the pitches, the kids play area was full all weekend with plenty of fun for the younger groups, the food court was busy for the full 2 days while the Heineken Tent was rocking all weekend with live music over the 2 days with acts like Super Céilí, Ruaile Buaile and Chasing Abbey. Congratulations to everyone who made this another hugely successful and enjoyable weekend yet again. Credit to the brilliant committee who have spent months putting plans in place, and to all the volunteers who helped out this weekend without whom the event could not happen, and of course to all our sponsors, neighbours and local community who helped make it another incredible weekend in Spa.
Roll on next year!
RESULT: Spa and Rathmore met in a sunny Fitzgerald Stadium on Friday evening for Round 9 of the Credit Union Co League, with Rathmore edging out a two-point victory on the night. It was a game with plenty of goal chances for both sides and, for most of the last quarter, it looked like the teams might share the spoils, but Rathmore finished well to take the win. Final score Spa 0-13 Rathmore 2-9. Well done to our team and management and wishing all our injured players a speedy recovery. Spa play Kilcummin this weekend in the penultimate round.
U12 GIRLS: Spa U12 ladies showed great
improvement again last week against Legion in our second round of games. Well done to all the girls who played great football.
GAELIC MOTHERS & OTHERS: Spa Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others had their first game in Dr Crokes last week and there were great skills shown on the pitch. Coach Kieran McCarthy was delighted with the display, and we had 25 players togged out on the night. It was a tough game well matched, and we were delighted to have our first match under our belt! Well done to all the ladies and massive thank you to Dr. Crokes Gaelic4Mothers&Others for the warm welcome and the refreshments and chat after, we look forward to battling again.
Dr Crokes GAA
SFL DIV. 1: Dr Crokes 1:15 Legion 0:07. With two games left to be played, we have continued our winning streak and remain top of the Division 1 table, after a good win over neighbours Legion. It was our opponents who opened the scoring with their first of 4 first half points, through a David O'Sullivan point from play. Daithi Casey, who finished the game with 5 points to his name, replied a minute later. The crucial moment of the game came when Michael Potts was introduced as a blood replacement for Neil O'Shea. We worked well, and remained patient until Michael Potts found the ball and knocked it into the back of the net, giving us a 1:06 to 0:04 lead at the break. The second half saw another fantastic display of football from the home side with Mikey Casey, Gavin O'Shea, Tom Doyle, Daithi Casey, David Naughton and Brendan Falvey all stepping up to kick some great points. Legion played the remaining 10 minutes with 14 men after a black card incident, and we ran out comfortable winners in the end. Next up is Milltown Castlemaine away.

Glenflesk GAA
RESULT: Credit Union Senior County League Division 1 - Glenflesk 2-17 Laune Rangers 4-13. 2 early goals helped Laune Rangers to victory in Round 9 of the Credit Union County League Division 1, despite Glenflesk’s strong second half comeback. Patrick Daly got the opening score of the game for the visitor’s inside the first 2 minutes, finding the net with the help of the post. Gavin O’Shea then saw his shot come off the post again and deflect into the net. Eoin O’Sullivan then fisted over a point, when another goal chance was on. Glenflesk needed a response and got it from terrific point’s from Callum Cronin and Ian Roche. The rest of the half was evenly contested, with 2 more fisted points from Daire Clearly and Fiachra Clifford for Laune Rangers, with Glenflesk replying with 2 Roche free’s, and a superb outside of the left foot effort from Jamie Moynihan. The visitor’s with a deserved 5-point lead at the break. They pushed on again after the restart. Two lightning quick attacks ended with 2 more well taken goals by Oisin Birmingham and Gearoid Hassett. The returning Chris O’Donoghue then started Glenflesk’s fightback, calmly finishing low to the net, after being set free by Moynihan. Luke Crowley then set up Cronin for another goal chance. Once again he was clinical, and Glenflesk looked like they could achieve a result that looked impossible just a few minutes earlier. It almost got even better for them, only a superb save from Jason Browne denying Crowley another goal. 3 superb Bowler point’s kept Glenflesk in range as the end approached. Laune Rangers though, always kept the 2 to 3 points gap, and late points from Hassett and Birmingham confirmed their victory. They will be delighted how their return to Division 1 has gone. For Glenflesk, the second half performance was much improved, and the team will go into the final 2 round’s hoping to finish on a high.
