No change in Town Hall

The people of Killarney have elected the same seven politicians to represent the Killarney Municipal District for the next five years.

Just shy of 17,000 people cast their votes on Friday.

This represents a turnout of 61 percent of the 22,666 people eligible to vote in the district.

Maura Healy Rae topped the poll on 3,292 first preference votes to ensure she got elected for the second time. On his first election since getting co-opted on to the council Martin Grady was second past the post on 2,053 votes – a massive result for a first-timer.

Like Grady, John O’Donoghue was also contesting his first election and finished third on 1,574 votes but he had to wait to the second count to get over the line.

Brendan Cronin continues his fine tradition as a public representative and earned 1,423 votes and was to be the fourth elected. He will start his 25th year

CANDIDATES VOTES

in office when the first council meeting takes place in late June.

However, Cronin’s election marked the start of long night at the Killarney Count Centre. It was only after the seventh count and the distribution of several candidates surplus votes and elimination of several candidates that he made the cut. This trend continued into early Monday morning and it was only until after the 11th count that Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan and Marie Moloney got the nod. Neither made the quota but at that point it was obvious that surplus votes from sixth and seventh placed finishers Dermot Healy and Damien Switzer were not going to affect the outcome. The election was declared shortly after 2am on Monday morning.

Chamber looks forward to continuing relationship with council

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has congratulated the seven newly elected members of Killarney Municipal District Council and wished them every success when tackling their to-do list over the next five years.

The chamber said it enjoyed a very productive, progressive and positive relationship with the outgoing councillors, all of whom were comfortably elected for another term at the weekend.

“We worked really well with every one of

the previous council and the executive and we look forward to continuing that good relationship going forward.

“There are many projects which require the chamber and council to work side by side to deliver and Killarney is the big winner from that joint approach,” a statement issued by co-presidents Johnny McGuire and Pádraig Treacy said.

The chamber acknowledged that the outgoing council got through an enormous body of work, despite their plans being severely hampered by the Cov-

id-19 pandemic and the reorganisation, restructuring and enormous expense that entailed.

“There are a number of issues that the chamber would love to see given priority going forward and we will address them in due course but, for now, it is time for the elected councillors to reflect on what was a very testing, physically demanding but ultimately successful local elections campaign and to prepare for a new beginning,” chamber added.

The co-presidents also thanked the 10

candidates who were not successful on this occasion for having the courage to put their names on the ballot paper which is a significant privilege in a true democracy.

“They might not have made it across the line on this occasion but we thank each and every one of them for having such an interest in Killarney and its people that they were willing to contest an election for the honour of representing the town and its interests,” the chamber statement said.

Sustainable spirit at Eats + Beats Festival

This summer, Eats + Beats is taking inspiration from the wellknown coffee cup project and is aiming to be one of the most sustainable festivals in Ireland.

The not-for-profit music, food and arts event is organised by the Killarney Folk Collective and backed by local business man and adventure runner Kevin Leahy. Kevin is also the owner of The Black Sheep, an eco-friendly Killarney hostel that is already leading the way in sustainable hospitality practices.

The Killarney man has always been passionate about sustainability and has implemented a series of initiatives at his own establishment over the years which have greatly reduced his hospitality business impact on the local environment.

This year’s festival is set for Dunloe over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The festival location, which was a greenfield site, has now been transformed into a rewilding project. Trees planted as part of a European Union reforestation initiative will provide a rewilding back-

drop like no other. The festival grounds are surrounded by the beautiful Macgillycuddy's Reeks, it’s just the perfect natural

“We want to put on a festival that is kind to the planet. We have tried to identify as many areas as we can that will negate our impact on the environment. Food is a big part of what we do at Eats + Beats and so all food containers at the festival will be 100% biodegradable. Much of our festival decor will be made up of preused materials that will be given a new lease on life, transformed into vibrant decorations that add a unique touch to the festival experience. Reusable beer cups will also be used, eliminating the need for single-use items, and because our festival is out of town, we will have a shuttle bus from Killarney, reducing the amount of car journeys,” said Leahy.

T OWN TALK

St Oliver’s NS Bag It Bin It campaign

St Oliver’s NS are always willing to help their local community and when asked by Killarney Looking Good to do a project to strengthen the town’s case in the Tidy Towns Competition, the school jumped at the chance.

An ongoing issue on the footpaths leading to the school is dog fouling, causing problems for children and parents alike walking to school, as well as class groupings when they go on walks and on visits to the Church of the Resurrection.

An education and awareness project to attempt to minimize the extent and impact of dog fouling was suggested to the Killarney Looking Good Committee who felt that it was a great idea and badly needed.

Who better to lead the way in educating and making the public aware than Junior Infants.

There have been very interesting chats and discussions with and between all 3 infant classes in St Oliver’s. What you need to bring with you when bringing your dog for a walk, bagging and binning dog poo, what can happen if you leave the dog poo on the footpath etc. The intention of these engagements is that the infants learn this good habit for life and bring the message home to their family, friends and the general community.

The school is now at the Awareness Stage of what they are calling the Bag It Bin It campaign - making all students in the school aware of the campaign to ensure that all students know what to do when a dog fouls and to bring this message out to the greater Killarney community. In conjunction with this, the Bag It, Bin It message is being stenciled using biodegradable coloured spray on the footpaths leading to the school grounds.

Juno, the school’s My Canine Companion therapy dog is also lending a hand in promoting the idea.

The school is asking for the general public’s help – to spread the message “BAG IT - BIN IT”, so tell your friends and family what the school community is trying to promote, that they’re tired of walking (accidentally) on the dog poo and manoeuvering around it on trips to and from the school and that the general public can show great example to young people growing up in Killarney that it is simply not acceptable to foul our pathways.

Healy Rae, Healy Rae, so good they voted twice

Maura Healy Rae romped to victory in the Killarney Municipal District local election.

She topped the poll for the second time and hovered up so many votes that she could have been elected twice.

The Kilgarvan woman earned 3,385 first preference votes on a quota of 1785. This was just 185 votes short of a double quota.

Her 2024 tally marks an increase of 286 first preference votes over her 2019 total of 3,099.

“It is all down to hard work, the election campaign may have been for the last few weeks but I have been canvassing since last September,” she said.

“I have visited every house in the area, if there was no one home we go back. We

might celebrate tonight [Sunday] but it is back first thing Monday morning. They say one hundred thousand welcomes but I suppose I have to say 3,385 thank yous to all who gave me a number one and to all those who thought of me as second or third preference.”

The eldest daughter of Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae was co-opted onto Kerry County Council to fill the seat he vacated when Danny was elected to the Dáil in 2016.

She teaches English and history at St Brogan's in Bandon, County Cork and will now represent the Killarney municipal district for a third term.

John O’Donoghe third past the post in Killarney local election

He was co-opted onto the council in June 2021 following the retirement of his uncle and former councillor Michael Gleeson.

He is a primary school teacher from Muckross and was part of Gleeson’s backroom team for years.

“I can’t thank enough, the 1574 people who voted for me,” he said, “I hope this is a reflection on the work I have done for coming on three years now. But as they say, the next election starts now.”

O’Donoghue earned 1,574 first preference and was elected on the second

count after Maura Healy Rae’s surplus votes were transferred to the remaining candidates.

His uncle was on hand to see O’Donoghue elected at the first time of asking.

“I am delighted to see John do well on his first campaign,” said the former Mayor of Killarney.

“It can be very intimidating as he establishes his own credibility and policies but John and his team travelled the constituency very thoroughly and close to 1600 people have shown their faith in him.”

Damien Switzer says thanks

Fein candidate Damien Switzer has thanked the people of Killarney for putting “their faith” in him.

The first-time runner gathered 339 first-preference votes but was eventually eliminated before the election went to an 11th count.

He said: “I fought a good campaign, but it wasn’t to be my day. I am feeling proud at the same time that I put myself

forward in spite of the result. I was heartened by the fact that Sinn Féin’s final numbers topped 1000 votes [including running mate Caroline Kenneally], over double what was achieved in the previous election."

“Thank you so much to everyone who put their faith in me and gave me a vote. It’s been a pleasure. Well done to all elected candidates and I wish them success in their term as Kerry County Councillors.”

Martin Grady continues the family political legacy

Martin Grady's election onto Kerry County Council and Killarney Municipal District ensures that the Grady family presence continues in local politics.

The Grady family have an unbroken record of representing the people of Killarney that stretches back to the 1960s. He represents the continuation of the Grady family in local politics since his grandfather John who was first elected in 1963.

His uncle Sean (Donal’s brother) was the second member of the family to get elected.

Both brothers served together for some time but with the abolition of Town Councils in June 2014 the family decided that Donal would go alone and that Sean would retire.

Martin was co-opted into Kerry County

Council following the retirement of his father Donal last year.

This was the first time that Martin has contested an election. Back in 2019, Donal was elected on 1,324 first preference votes but his novice son exceeded that by 85 votes.

Martin was elected on the first count with 2,053 first-preference votes.

“I am overwhelmed,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “The people of Killarney have put their faith and trust in me. It is a special day for my family. The Gradys have held the town vote now for 25 years. But the work starts now, I owe it back to the people of Killarney.”

LOCAL ELECTION 2024

Brendan Cronin marks 25 years as a public representative

Brendan Cronin became the fourth politician to be elected in the Killarney Municipal District.

It took until the fifth count to elect the former Mayor of Killarney, after gathering 1,423 first-preference votes.

Following the distribution of Martin Grady’s surplus he increased his tally to 1,741 but this was still short of the 1,785 quota.

The fourth count was based on John O’Donoghue’s surplus of 27 spare votes and he gathered five votes.

Both William Leen and Diarmuid McGuickan were eliminated and there 50 votes were allocated in a fifth count.

However it went a sixth count, Alan O’Connor’s 120 votes were redistributed

after he was eliminated.

Even that wasn’t good enough and he was still one vote short until Natalia Krasnenkova was eliminated and her 157 were carried over.

He was elected on the seventh count gathering three crucial votes! This year marks his 25th in politics. He said: “[Getting elected] is a testament to my commitment to the people and the work I do. I give 100 per cent all the time. I am proud that our small area west of the Tralee road, in Fossa, Ballyhar and Listry, my home patch, that we have retained our seat on the council.

A farmer from Ballyhar, he followed his late father, PJ Cronin, into local politics and he has represented the Killarney Electoral Area since 1999.

‘Good morning councillor’

As Marie Moloney says: “No matter if you top the poll or take the last seat, the first day you turn up for the work everyone says good morning councillor.”

She said that in the run up to last Friday’s election, but it may well have been prophetic.

She and Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan were the last two to be elected to Killarney Municipal District.

They may have had to wait until the 11th count, in the early hours of Monday morning but their election ensured that there will be no change in Town Hall for the next five years as the people of

Killarney have elected the same seven councillors for the next term.

“It was a long night but I never had any doubts,” said Moloney. “Kilcummin came out in force for me.”

For the second time in a row O’Callaghan ran a low-campaign . He doesn’t believe in postering and advertising. He prefers the personal touch, meeting the people on the streets every day.

“I am both delighted and very humbled,” he told the Killarney Advertiser shortly after being elected in the early hours of Monday morning. “This is for my late dad, Dermot, who instilled the love of politics in me.”

Healy Raes on top in four out of five constituencies

It was a monumental election for the Healy Rae dynasty.

All three family members topped the poll in their respective electoral districts.

Michael’s son Jackie topped the poll and was elected in the Castleisland Electoral Area

Cllr Johnny Healy-Rae (Independent) son of TD Danny Healy-Rae has topped the poll in the Kenmare Electoral Area with 3,441 first preference votes.

Danny’s daughter Maura was the poll-topper in the Killarney LEA. She took a staggering 3,385 first-preference votes.

Meanwhile, Liam ‘Speedy’ Nolan, who contested the council election in the Listowel Municipal District with the backing

of the Healy Rae family, came within a whisker of topping the poll too.

He was elected on the first count with 2,223 votes, just 87 short of poll topper

Mike Kennelly. Independent candidate

Nolan - a very close ally of the Healy-Raes and long-time campaigner for the familygarnered 15.3% of the vote.

Michael told the Killarney Advertiser it was down to three things.

“Working, working, working,” he said. “A big part of the overall picture is Speedy’s election.”

They were not represented in the Corca Dhuibhne electoral area.

Kelleher elected for a third term – dedicates win to late grandfather

The current Mayor of Killarney Niall Kelleher has been re-elected to the Killarney Municipal District.

First elected in 2014 he will start his third term as a local representative on June 21 when the new council assembles for the first time.

He secured 1,640 first preference votes but had to wait until the ninth count – at 1am on Monday morning – to reach the

quota of 1,785.

Once Caroline Kenneally was eliminated he hoovered up 32 more votes.

Kelleher dedicated his election to his late grandfather Connie who passed away during the pandemic.

“He was the main reason I got into politics in the first place,” Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser.

“I am feeling very emotional right now as this was my first election without him.”

It took until late on Monday for the final election results across all six districts to be declared.

A request for a recount resulted in a delay in declaring the Kenmare result. That declaration came around 10pm on Monday resulting in all 33 seats being filled.

The new look council includes new councillors of which seven have been elected for the first time.

There are 11 Independents on the full council, Fianna Fail now hold nine seats, a loss of one.

Fine Gael also lost one and now have six seats in the chamber. Sinn Fein held on to their four seats. Labour retained tow seats and Kerry Independent Alliance held their sole seat.

A HOME FOR HUMANS & HOUNDS

Furnishing your new home with pets in mind

So you have just got keys to your new place – congratulations! But before the celebratory pizza boxes pile up, there's the exciting task of furnishing your space.

While you're busy dreaming of plush sofas and cozy armchairs, it's important to consider your furry companions as well. After all, this new home is theirs too! Here are some key considerations to ensure your home is a haven for both you and your pet:

• FLOORING

Carpet can be a nightmare for pet owners, attracting fur tumbleweeds and clinging stubbornly to muddy paw prints. Opt for hardwood floors, tile, or luxury vinyl plank flooring (LVP) for easy cleaning. These surfaces are also great for preventing the spread of allergens, which can be beneficial for owners with sensitivities. Consider adding area rugs in strategic spots for your pet to lounge on, washable of course!

22

• UPHOLSTERY SAVVY

Leather furniture might seem like a luxurious choice, but it can be a magnet for scratches from playful paws. Consider opting for stain-resistant fabrics like microfiber or tightly woven polyester. These fabrics are easier to clean and stand up better to enthusiastic tail wags.

• CAT CASTLES AND CANINE CAVES

Provide designated spaces for your pet to relax and feel secure. Invest in a comfy bed, ideally tucked away from high-traffic areas. For cats, vertical space is key. Install cat trees or shelves for them to climb, perch, and survey their domain. Scratching posts are a must for feline friends. This will help deter them from using your furniture as a personal sharpening station. Choose a sturdy post with a sisal or cardboard surface that appeals to your cat's natural scratching instincts.

• FOOD AND WATER STATIONS

Designate a specific area for your pet's food and water bowls. This helps them develop a routine and prevents spills in high-traffic areas. Consider elevated feeders for larger dogs to improve their posture while eating.

• STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Leashes, toys, and grooming supplies can quickly clutter a space. Invest in stylish storage solutions like baskets or ottomans with hidden compartments. This keeps your home tidy and prevents your pet's favourite chew toy from becoming a permanent fixture under the couch.

Furnishing your new home with your pet in mind doesn't mean sacrificing style. By incorporating these simple tips, you can create a beautiful and functional space that caters to both your needs and your furry friend's desires. After all, a happy pet makes a happy home (and a much cleaner one too!).

A guide to choosing the perfect

DINING TABLE for your home

When it comes to furnishing your dining space, few pieces are as essential and impactful as the dining table.

It’s not just a functional piece; it’s the centrepiece of family gatherings, dinner parties, children's homework and everyday meals. Choosing the perfect dining table requires careful consideration of various factors, from size and shape to materials and style. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you make the right choice for your home.

1. CONSIDER YOUR SPACE: Before anything else, assess the size and layout of your dining area. Measure the space to determine how much room you have for a dining table. Consider the flow of traffic around the table and leave

enough space for chairs to be pulled out comfortably. A good rule of thumb is to allow at least 90cm between the table and walls or other furniture.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE:

The size of your dining table should be proportional to the size of your dining area and the number of people you typically expect to seat. As a general guideline, allow 60cm of width per person, although this can vary depending on the shape of the table and the size of the chairs.

3. SELECT THE SHAPE:

Dining tables come in various shapes, each with its own advantages. Rectangular tables are classic and versatile, ideal for larger dining rooms and seating more people. Square tables are great for smaller spaces or intimate gatherings. Round tables promote conversation and are perfect for smaller groups.

4. MATERIAL MATTERS:

The material of your dining table will affect its durability, appearance, and maintenance requirements. Common options include wood, glass, metal, and composite materials.

• Wood is timeless and adds warmth to a space, offering a natural look that can complement various interior styles.

• Glass can make a room feel more open and airy.

• Ceramic tables are resistant to scratches, stains and heat making them highly durable and easy to clean.

Consider factors like ease of cleaning and susceptibility to scratches or stains when choosing the material.

5. STYLE AND AESTHETIC:

Your dining table should complement the overall style and aesthetic of your home. Whether your taste is traditional, modern,

rustic, or eclectic, there’s a dining table to match. Pay attention to details like the table’s legs, finish, and decorative accents to ensure it fits seamlessly with your decor.

6. FUNCTIONALITY:

Think about how you’ll use your dining table on a day-to-day basis. If you frequently entertain guests, consider a table with extendable leaves to accommodate larger gatherings. Storage options like drawers or shelves can be useful for keeping table linens, ware, or other dining essentials close at hand.

7. BUDGET CONSIDERATIONS:

Set a realistic budget for your dining table purchase, taking into account factors like material, size, and craftsmanship. While it’s tempting to splurge on a statement piece, remember that quality construction and durability are important for a piece of furniture that will see regular use.

8. TEST BEFORE YOU BUY:

Whenever possible, visit McElligotts stores to see dining tables in person. Sit at the table, envision how it will look in your space, and consider how comfortable it is for dining. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about materials, construction, and customization options.

In conclusion, choosing the perfect dining table requires thoughtful consideration of factors like size, shape, material, style, functionality, and budget. By taking the time to assess your needs and preferences, you can find a dining table that not only fits your space but also enhances your dining experience for years to come. Happy dining!

Choosing the right BATHROOM FOR YOUR HOME

Revamping your bathroom can have numerous benefits, improving functionality, increasing home value, reducing energy costs and enhancing your daily life. Here are four compelling reasons to consider:

Enhanced Functionality & Layout:

Updating your bathroom allows you to optimise the layout for better flow and efficiency, making daily routines easier and more comfortable. Upgrading your fixtures, such as showers, toilets, and sinks, can enhance your overall comfort with features like bluetooth integrated mirrors, heated floors, and advanced lighting.

Increased Home Value:

A modern, updated bathroom can significantly boost the value of your home. Bathrooms are often a critical factor in a home buying journey. Stylish, updated bathrooms not only make your home more functional but also more appealing should you wish to sell or rent your property.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability:

Installing energy-efficient fixtures, such as low-flow toilets and LED lighting, can reduce water and electricity consumption, lowering your energy bills. Using eco-friendly materials such as those found in Corcoran’s Furniture revamped bathroom showroom not only contributes to environmental sustainabil-

ity but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of your bathroom.

Personal Satisfaction and Well-being:

A bathroom remodel allows you to create a space that reflects your unique personal style, whether it's a sleek and modern walk-in shower room or a cosy and traditional bathroom, contributing to a more pleasant home environment and experience. A well-designed bathroom can provide a spa-like atmosphere at home, offering a private retreat where you can relax and unwind, which is essential for your mental and physical well-being.

PAINT LIKE A PRO: HOW TO PAINT EXTERIOR WALLS

Painting your walls is a great way to protect your exterior and boost your home’s curb appeal. If you want to refresh your exterior walls, but don’t know where to start read our guide.

BEFORE YOU START...

If you’re working with a freshly plastered surface, we recommend giving it about six months to fully dry out before painting.

STEP 1: PREPARATION

Before you grab that paintbrush, let's talk prep. Protect surrounding surfaces by laying down dust sheets and masking off features and fittings (e.g., windows, door frames etc.).

Next, give those walls a good scrubbing to remove nasty contaminants like dirt and mould. Once fully dry, scrape down the walls so there are no uneven surfaces.

Fix minor defects (e.g., cracks, holes, scratches) by applying an appropriate filler such as Prestonett Exterior Filler. Once dry, smooth it out with sandpaper and wipe away any dust.

STEP 2: CHECK IF YOUR WALLS NEED SEALING

A simple test is to run your hand along the wall. If you're left with a powdery residue, seal 'em up! Apply Ralston Wall

Primer to seal any unstable areas and to ensure that the first coat of paint adheres correctly. Dilute it with water by a ratio of 1:1, making sure to mix thoroughly. Apply the primer to your wall as you would a normal paint and give it roughly four hours to dry.

Tip: If your house faces onto the street, display “wet paint” signs so passers-by don’t get any nasty surprises!

STEP 3: PAINT!

Always use a masonry paint when painting your home’s exterior. Dulux Weathershield is made in Ireland and is perfect for our unique weather.

Tip: In recent years, more lime-based or breathable plaster has been used in Ire-

TOOLS FOR THE JOB

• Ralston Wall Primer (if needed)

• Exterior paint e.g. Dulux Weathershield or Ralston Siloxan Matt (for a breathable option)

• Prestonett Exterior Filler

• 2” Wooster Soft Tip Brush for cutting-in

• Dust Sheets

land. To ensure that you maintain the breathability of your walls, be sure to use a breathable masonry paint which will not unnecessarily seal your surface. We recommend diluting your first coat with water by about 10% and mixing thoroughly. Start from the top and work your way downwards with the aid of your cutting-in brush, masonry brush and roller. Allow to dry for 2-4 hours depending on manufacturer’s instructions. Then, go ahead and apply a second coat without thinning the paint, and maybe even a third depending on your wall's surface. Tip: Remove the masking tape after a few hours after painting as the tape glue might dry and damage fittings and windows.

• Corona Tuff Pro 9” Sleeve (thickness of sleeve and nap depend on your walls)

• Wooster 9” Roller Frame

• Deltec Masking Tape Extreme

• Harper & Green Blue Roller Bucket

• Extension Pole

• Correct ladder or equipment to safely access the eves, facia & soffit

Aer lingus pilots overwhelmingly vote in favour of strike action

If you have planned a Summer holiday and plan to get there by flying with Aer Lingus, you may have reason to be concerned.

Pilots with the Irish airline have decisively voted in favor of industrial action, including a potential strike, according to the Irish Airline Pilots' Association (IALPA). The vote comes after pilots rejected a 9% pay rise offer brokered by the Labour Court, instead seeking a raise of over 20%.

The ballot results were stark, with IALPA reporting that 97.7% of pilots who voted were in favour of industrial action. This strong mandate from the membership puts significant pressure on Aer Lingus management to reach a deal with the pilots' union. Both sides have acknowledged the potential for disruption to airline operations if a strike occurs. Aer Lingus has expressed regret at the prospect of a strike, highlighting the negative impact

it would have on passengers and other employees. The airline also emphasised its ongoing discussions with IALPA and its willingness to seek further solutions through the Workplace Relations Commission.

IALPA president Mark Tighe indicated that the union will announce its specific course of action "in due course." He expressed hope that Aer Lingus management will "come to its senses" and offer a more substantial pay increase.

Irish citizens ceremonies in Killarney

Over 4,800 people from 138 countries around the world participated in six citizenship ceremonies held at the INEC Killarney earlier this week. These ceremonies represent a significant milestone for these individuals as they officially became Irish citizens. The ceremonies were presided over by retired Justice Mary Irvine and Justice Paddy McMahon. New citizens undertook the Declaration of Fidelity to the Irish Nation and Loyalty to the State, officially pledging to uphold the laws and democratic values of Ireland.

Minister McEntee, speaking ahead of the ceremonies, highlighted their importance, calling them "wonderful celebrations" where Ireland welcomes its newest citizens. This week's ceremonies were part of a larger effort, with similar ceremonies having already taken place in Dublin in February and December of 2023.

Oxford study links Viagra to improved brain blood flow

A new study by researchers at the University of Oxford has shed light on a surprising potential benefit of sildenafil, the drug more commonly known by its brand name Viagra.

The study suggests the medication may improve blood flow to the brain, potentially aiding in the prevention of vascular dementia.

The research, published in the journal Circulation Research, focused on patients

at an increased risk of vascular dementia. This form of dementia is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, leading to damage and cognitive decline. The study found that sildenafil improved blood flow in both large and small blood vessels within the brain, as measured by ultrasound and MRI scans. Furthermore, it enhanced the blood flow response to carbon dioxide, indicating improved overall cerebrovascular function.

Dr. Alastair Webb, an associate professor at the Wolfson Centre for Prevention of Stroke and Dementia at Oxford University, highlights that this is the first trial to demonstrate sildenafil's ability to reach blood vessels in the brain and improve blood flow in at-risk individuals. Dr. Webb emphasises, however, that this is an early-stage study, and larger trials are needed to confirm the potential benefits of sildenafil in preventing dementia.

Roger and Brendan really into the SWING of things

A Killarney man who has been living in the US for over 30 years has maintained a very strong connection with his hometown through a novel golfing tournament which involves a regular challenge against local players.

Roger O’Sullivan, originally from Loreto Road and a member of the Rainier Golf and Country Club in Seattle, has linked up with another Killarney man, Brendan Keogh of SWING Golf, on several occasions to bring a group of golfers from the Seattle club to play a number of Kerry and Irish courses.

They compete for the Cider Cup which is their own unique take on the Ryder Cup. In 2010 Roger led a group of 18 golfers from the US to play in Ireland and they repeated the journey and the adventure again in 2012, 2014 and 2017.

They had another trip planned in 2020 but that was cancelled due to Covid but they returned again in 2022 and a group of 44 golfers were back in Killarney in recent weeks to test their skills on the Kerry courses and against local players.

“Since we first started doing this in 2010 we have had 102 different golfers travel from Seattle,” Roger explained.

“I met Brendan Keogh on one of my visits home and he travelled to Seattle, at my request, and organised sponsorship at my golf club.

“Since then our trips have been expertly organised by SWING Golf who book us preferential tee-times, set up the schedule and coordinate our bus drivers. We have never had an issue or anything to worry about. Being friendly with Maurice O’Donoghue, we have always stayed at Scott’s Hotel,” he added.

Irish athletics soar at European Championships in Rome

Irish athletes delivered a performance for the ages at the recent European Athletics Championships in Rome, securing their highest ever medal haul.

Leading the charge was Ciara Mageean, who delivered a tactical masterclass to clinch the gold medal in the women's 1500 meters. Her victory, the first European Championship individual gold for Ireland since Sonia O'Sullivan's two-medal haul in 1998, was a testament to her strategic racing and ability to perform under pressure. Ireland's golden touch didn't stop there. The newly introduced mixed 4x400m relay saw a sensational win for the Irish quartet of Tom Barr, Rhasidat Adeleke, Chris O'Donnell, and Sharlene Mawd-

sley. This historic victory marked a first-ever gold medal in this exciting new discipline.

Ireland's success wasn't limited to gold. Rhasidat Adeleke added a silver medal to the mix with a dazzling performance in the women's 400m. Not only did she secure second place, but she also smashed the national record, solidifying her place as a future star of Irish athletics. The women's 4x400m relay team added another silver to the tally, narrowly missing out on gold but setting a new national record in the process.

All eyes now turn to the Paris Olympics which start at the end of July, with the success at the Europeans sparking a lot of interest amongst the public.

The US visitors take on local players when in Killarney and this year there was 100 golfers playing on the Killeen course on the first day of their visit.

“The support of the locals has been incredible and I wouldn’t do this without them,” said Roger.

“There have been numerous friendships made over the last 14 years. We have supported a local charity on every trip and for the last two it has been the palliative care unit at University Hospital Kerry. This year we raised €5,100,” he said.

A former student at St Brendan’s College, Roger’s parents were Tony and Juliette O’Sullivan and his father was the head chef in the Gleneagle Hotel for over 20 years before the family purchased Danesfort Lodge at Woodlawn Cross on the Muckross Road.

Roger has been married for 20 years to Amy from Tampa, Florida and they have one daughter, Gracie.

Brendan Keogh joined SWING in the early days of its operation as financial operations manager, working alongside the late Paddy O’Looney.

A member of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club for 40 years, he is the current CEO and he will have served 33 years next September.

SWING, the brainchild of former Kerry Group chief, Denis Brosnan, markets and promotes the premier golf clubs in the south west and also runs an incoming golf agency.

Records show that the company has booked over 350,000 rounds of golf in the south west alone but it also facilitates golfers wanting to play elsewhere in the country.

RTÉ investigates reveal horse cruelty and food chain concerns

A bombshell documentary aired on Wednesday night’s RTÉ One's Investigates program titled "Horses: Making a Killing," utilised hidden camera footage and data analysis to expose alleged abuse of racehorses after they retire from competition.

The program's journalists infiltrated the industry undercover, capturing disturbing footage at slaughterhouses and auction houses. These scenes allegedly revealed mistreatment of horses, including rough handling and a lack of proper veterinary care. The documentary also raised concerns about the traceability of horses within the industry, suggesting a potential risk to the safety of the human food chain. Ireland is known worldwide for its rich horse racing tradition. However, "Horses: Making a Killing" shed light on the often-overlooked fate of racehorses after their racing careers end. Many

of these animals, some with significant earnings and prestigious accolades, are reportedly sent to slaughterhouses after they are deemed no longer profitable.

The documentary, which is available to watch back on the RTÉ player, went beyond undercover footage, also utilising data analysis to track the movement of thousands of horses through the Irish racing and slaughter industries. This analysis allegedly revealed a previously unseen connection between these two sectors, raising further questions about the industry's practices.

Horse Racing Ireland has said it’s “deeply shocked and appalled” by an RTÉ Investigates programme while agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue described the scenes in the programme as “abhorrent, distressing, and absolutely unacceptable” while going on to saying that “no stone will be left unturned in making sure the full rigours of the law are applied.”

Cullina: One school one final two teams

The Mid Kerry Primary games football finals were unusual in the sense that two teams representing the same school contested the final.

On Sunday last Cullina National School fielded a gold and a blue team.

The occasion was marked with a great supporter turn out, dry weather and an abundance of quality skills on show.

The game itself was nip and tuck with some fine individual battles all over the pitch with friends and classmates pitted as rivals for the duration of the game. The gold team pulled away in the second half and were deserving winners on the day with Capt. James Rooney raising the shield to great cheers. Picture Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan.

Final preparations ahead of 60th anniversary of Muckross House

Final preparations are underway this week to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the opening of Muckross House to visitors on June 14 1964.

A special day to mark the occasion is organised by National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Board of Trustees of Muckross House, Killarney on Friday. Staff at NPWS, Muckross House and Trustees will host several exhibitions, walks and guided tours in the vicinity of

the house. There will also be free admission to Muckross House and Muckross Traditional Farms throughout the weekend (14-16 June).

Sixty years on, it is time to celebrate the significant contributions of those who have made Muckross House what it is today: The guides, staff, a supportive community, the visitors and the legacy of the Bourn Vincent family. Over these six decades, thousands of people have collaborated to protect, preserve, and enjoy this unique and special property.

Energy information roadshow in Brehon

EirGrid, the operator and developer of the national electricity grid, will host its Energy Citizens Roadshow in The Brehon Hotel next Wednesday, (June 19) from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

Led by EirGrid, in partnership with ESB Networks and the SEAI (Ireland’s national sustainable energy authority) this event, which is free and open to the public, will inform local communities about retrofitting grants, community micro-generation schemes and plans to future-proof the electricity grid in the region.

Joining the panel is Deirdre de Bhailís, Manager of the Dingle Hub, a non-profit group that connects people and organisations, both local and national to develop innovative approaches to the many challenges brought on by climate change and biodiversity loss.

The roadshow will also host a range of local exhibitors showcasing the latest information about home energy efficiency upgrades, heat pumps and solar energy.

“This event aims to bring together communities and businesses across Kerry to learn how the southwest will play an integral role in the future of the electricity grid, while also learning more about the supports that are available at a local level,” said Sinead Dooley Head of Public Engagement at EirGrid.

Donegal driver, Declan Gallagher, and his Killarney-based co-driver, John McCarthy have taken a convincing victory on the Germaine's of Baltinglass Garda Síochána Motor Club Mini Stages Rally.

The Toyota Starlet crew were fastest on four of the event's six stages, and came home with 42.4 seconds in hand over their closest challengers, Jason Black and Karl Egan, who were also in a Starlet. The opening stage had seen Black and Egan to the fore, by 2.6 seconds, but Gallagher and McCarthy then went fastest on the next test, to move into the lead.

It was a remarkable time by Gallagher, 10.3 seconds faster than Black, and left the overall margin at 7.7 seconds going into the first Service. Gallagher and McCarthy continued to pull away on every stage thereafter from Black and Egan, who were unable to respond.

The outcome will leave the victors in a confident frame of mind ahead of the Donegal International Rally in two weeks time, where they are certain to be in the fight for Modified category honours. Black and Egan had in turn been com-

fortably ahead of the rest of the field throughout the day, although the gap to third placed Mark Alcorn and James McNulty (Ford Escort RS) did narrow to 8.6 seconds on the final stage. The latter crew had been coming under pressure to hold off Kevin Eves and Chris Melly (Toyota Corolla GT Coupé) in the battle for the final podium position, but just held on to the place, by 2.9 seconds, despite having to contend with a misting windscreen as the weather turned wet over the closing kilometres.

Speaking at the finish of the final stage, Gallagher was mindful of the value of the Baltinglass event ahead of his home international. "It's good seat time, it's great to come here after the disappointment of last weekend, we didn't get around the Circuit of Munster last Sunday and we had just started to get going there," he said. "We were a bit edgy here in the morning, but we settled in then and put new tyres on for the middle loop, and the rain came down for the last loop. I can't thank John enough, he played a blinder on the notes. We had a great day and it's a great rally, it was well ran."

Photo of “hidden gem” wins club competition

A photograph of one of Killarney’s hidden beauty spots was deemed the winner of Killarney Camera Club’s most recent competition.

Th standard was high throughout all categories but in the Novice category, Iryna Halaieva’s photograph of O’Sullivan’s Cascade, was deemed the winner.

“A waterfall is my favourite waterbody and long exposure is my favourite photographic technique,” she said. “I do my

LETTER TO EDITOR

Dear Editor

While reading a recent edition of the Killarney Advertiser, I had a good laugh reading about efforts to help traffic flow during one of the busiest weekends in Killarney.

Just who is taking traffic flow around Killarney seriously and is there any communication between the various agencies involved?

In the days leading up to that weekend, there was line painting taking place on the N72, right over the potholes and patching, and there was hedge-cutting along the R563 near Fossa, both at peak traffic times!

The perfect surface of the Rock Road has being dug up to create a cycle lane, was it really necessary to do it at this time of year?

Yet no safety improvements have taken place on the by-pass, even after all the fatalities and promises!

And speaking of the bypass, come big match day at Fitzgerald Stadium, it is allowed to be used as a carpark while

National role for Judo Club’s Tim Kelly

Killarney Judo Club’s Tim Kelly was elected as Honorary General Secretary on the national board; the Irish Judo Association.

This role includes acting as point of contact for all clubs within Ireland, working with Sport Ireland and overseeing the high-performance coaching during the

next Olympic cycle.

It has been a very few busy weeks for the club as the club begins to wind down for summer.

Muireann O’Brien earned her Black Belt on Sunday in Dublin last. Muireann has been training with the club since she was young and throughout the pandemic.

best to have as many waterfalls as possible in my photo collection. I heard a lot about O’Sullivan's Cascade and wanted to visit that hidden gem of Kerry. So, shortly before our club competition I went with a friend to Tomies Wood to photograph it. It was a dream come true for me.”

other events have to have a traffic plan in place, such as the park and ride during the Bikefest weekend. Is this fair?.

I don't think so.

No effort is made to tackle illegally parked cars at the bottom of New Street during funeral and school pick up times.

The lane markings leading into the towns roundabouts are poor condition or not marked at all, and some of those that are, actually contradict the rules of the road!

The towns pedestrian crossings are again poorly marked and again in some terrible locations, is there any more dangerous that the one located on the Hans Liebherr Road between Lidl and the Reeks?

I could go on, it's not rocket science or even that expensive to solve some of it.

I wish our newly elected Councillors the best, but you have an awful lot of work to do and a bit of common sense wouldn't go amis!

Yours, Brendan O'Shea, Listry

30 years of Innisfallen Island Mass announced

The annual special concelebrated Mass on Innisfallen Island takes place next week.

Next Friday (June 21), members of the public are invited to attend the Mass taking place at 6.30pm.

Now in its 30th year, the Mass was originally an idea by Geoffrey O'Donoghue who sadly died four years after it began.

"There was an Augustinian Monastery on Innisfallen Island and people, including priests and monks and they say Brian Ború, went out there to study. The lake, Lough Lein is called 'The Lake of Learning'," said his wife Mary who carries on the tradition in his memory.

"My husband Geoffrey was a descendent of the O'Donoghues and he wanted

to have Mass on the island. The O'Donoghues built Ross Castle and owned the lands and the lake surrounding it which was later donated by John McShane to the people of Killarney. He [Geoffrey] asked one of the friars and one day he got a call from the OPW that there would be a plaque unveiled to John McShane and they asked if the Mass could coincide with it. It was attended by Sr Pauline, John McShane's daughter, and has continued since until the pandemic."

She added that all the public are welcome to attend. Boats, which will have a nominal fee to cover their costs, will be carrying passengers out from 4pm onwards.

A whole new ball game

Football Review Committee propose radical new rules | Four points for a goal and new ‘two-pointer’ to be tested

The Football Review Committee (FRC) tasked with saving Gaelic football has recommended a raft of new rule changes that they believe can revolutionise the sport.

Amongst the proposals is an overhaul of the current scoring system that would see the value of goals increased from three to four points and the addition of a two-pointer for shots from outside a new 40-metre arc.

These and several other amendments to the playing rules will be trialled in the coming weeks in unofficial matches between senior intercounty teams who are

no longer involved in the Sam Maguire or Tailteann Cups.

As a spectacle Gaelic football has been subject to incessant complaints in recent years as supporters have grown weary of what they deem to be ‘negative’ play. A sport that was traditionally fast-paced and exciting has become slow and monotonous. The now commonly used defensive tactic of piling every player behind the ball has led to attacking teams holding possession in non-threatening areas, which in turn leads to long periods in which not very much happens. The stated brief of the FRC, which is led by former Dublin manager Jim Gavin and includes in its ranks former Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice, is to make Gaelic

football the most enjoyable amateur sport in the world to watch and to play. It is hoped that these new rule changes can achieve that goal.

With regards to the new scoring system, the potential advantages of increasing the reward for a goal are obvious, while adding the two-pointer from distance can help on two fronts. Firstly, it encourages long-range kicking, which is one of the most attractive and revered skills in the game. And secondly, it should draw defenders out a little further – they will surely close down prospective shooters on this new perimeter in an attempt to snuff out two-point attempts – which should free up space in and around the goal.

Many other changes have also been proposed. In brief, they include: amending the advanced mark so it can only be claimed inside the 20-metre line; forcing teams to keep at least three outfield players inside each 65-metre line; changing the black card rule to include cynical holding tackles when the player is not dragged to the ground; only allowing one player from each team to contest the throw-in; and forcing keepers to send kickouts beyond the new 40-metre arc. Gavin will present his final report to the GAA in October and any proposed new rules may be decided upon at Special Congress in December. Changes will come into effect for the 2025 season.

Kerry plotting direct route to last eight

ALL-IRELAND SFC GROUP 4

Kerry v Louth

Sunday 3pm

Portlaoise

Kerry might be favourites to safely advance to the quarter-finals by defeating Louth in Portlaoise on Sunday, but they surely won’t have it as easy this time around.

Twelve months ago Jack O’Connor’s side travelled to the same venue (O’Moore Park) to face the same opposition at the same stage of the competition and they went home happy following an utterly comprehensive 28-point victory. That win and Cork’s unexpected victory over Mayo allowed Kerry to sneak into first place and avoid the preliminaries. The picture this time around is far clearer: win or draw and The Kingdom will progress directly to the last. Lose and a home preliminary quarter-final awaits. Louth appear to have improved under Ger Brennan. After giving a good account of themselves against Dublin in the Leinster final, they beat Meath in Round 1 of the group stage and a draw against

DISAPPOINTED:

Danielle O'Leary and her Kerry teammates were pegged back by Donegal at the death. Photo: Ben McShane/Sportsfile.

Monaghan in Round 2 means they are now guaranteed at least one knockout game.

Accurate full forward Sam Mulroy is the focal point of their attack - he will more than likely be picked up by Jason Foley –and half back Conor Grimes is also effective, although he is apparently struggling with a hamstring injury.

One would suspect that the priority for Jack O’Connor will be to win playing well, while also getting all of his players through the match unscathed.

At the foot of Group 4, Meath and Monaghan square off knowing that the losers will be out, while the winners will be through to an away preliminary quarter-final.

Elsewhere, Cork will top Group 3 if they beat or draw with Tyrone (Saturday 3pm, GAAGO). If Tyrone win and Donegal fail to beat Clare (also Saturday 3pm), Tyrone will finish first. If Tyrone and Donegal both win, there will be a three-way tie at the top and the sides will be separated by scoring difference. Cork trail in this department and so will finish third in this event.

Clare can knock Donegal out of the championship if they win. Donegal only need a

draw to advance to the preliminaries. Groups 1 and 2 are a little less complicated heading into the final weekend. In Group 1, Galway and Armagh will fight it out for first place (Sunday 1.45pm, RTÉ) while Derry will look to keep their season alive by beating Westmeath (Saturday 7pm, GAAGO). Defeat or a draw would send the Division 1 champions packing. Mayo and Dublin are vying for top spot in Group 2 – they meet in Hyde Park on Sunday at 3.45pm (RTÉ) – and the winners of Roscommon v Cavan will clinch third (Saturday 5pm).

Ladies need to bounce back

ALL-IRELAND SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP 2

Kerry v Waterford

Saturday 3pm

Fitzgerald Stadium

The Kerry ladies will be looking to get back to winning ways against Waterford on Saturday following last weekend’s frustrating draw against Donegal in Ballybofey.

The Kingdom led with seconds remaining in treacherous conditions but a late Donegal free snatched a draw for the home side (Donegal 1-6 Kerry 0-9). It was a game that Kerry would have been expecting to win and the result puts a lot more pressure on them this weekend as they try to top the three-team group and earn a home quarter-final.

If they beat Waterford and Donegal do likewise next week, Kerry and Donegal will be level in first place on four points each. The top seed will then be decided by the head-to-head record between the teams. As this match was a draw, the deciding factor will be whoever scored the most points in that draw. That would be good news for Kerry as they scored nine points to Donegal’s six. When Kerry and Waterford last met (in this year’s Munster Championship), Kerry needed a late winner by Fiadhna Tangney to prevail by the narrowest of margins (1-8 to 1-7). If Waterford beat Kerry and then lose to Donegal, Kerry would be eliminated from the championship.

The Kerry squad has been boosted by the return of Síofra O’Shea who came off the bench against Donegal following a lengthy period out with a knee injury.

The Barbed Wire

Eamonn Fitzgerald tells the story of the famous Kerry v Louth match in the Frongoch internment camp in Wales in 1916

Portlaoise is not the happiest of venues for many of Kerry’s county, club and colleges teams, although the Kerry senior football team has done well there. They face Louth on Sunday at 3pm in the last of the ridiculous round robin series of games to qualify for All-Ireland series. No game is a foregone conclusion and even though Louth have produced some great results under Ger Brennan (who took over from Mickey Harte after the Tyrone man left the Wee County in undue haste), last year’s mauling by Kerry will not be forgotten.

Few spectators will travel from Kerry even with a direct train service, but Dublin-based Kerry migrants will travel down the motorway on that short spin to see if their side can deliver this year. Anything but a Kerry win would be a major surprise. Far more interesting than Sunday’s game was Kerry v Louth in Frongoch POW Camp in 1916.

Often referred to as the Barbed Wire final, it was the first time that Kerry played a final outside of Ireland, long before they lost the 1947 All-Ireland to Cavan in the Polo Grounds in New York. Even in prison, the Kerry roar succeeded. Ciarraí Abú.

PORTLAOISE

Portlaoise is best known for its maximum

security prison facility. Built in the 1830s, it houses about 120 people charged under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

And now to another prison centre, the scene of an unusual All-Ireland football final. At noon on Thursday, June 20, Mayor of Kerry Jim Finucane, in one of his last public engagements before bowing out of politics, will lead a small group of colleagues and internee descendants to unveil a significant Valentia slate monument on behalf of Kerry County Council in the Frongoch Museum in North Wales.

This will commemorate both the Louth and Kerry teams in the 1916 All-Ireland final, like no other final, the one played ‘Behind Barbed Wire’. All thirty-seven Kerry internees in Frongoch at that time are listed. Noel O’Sullivan, formerly from Spa, one of the great Spa GAA O’Sullivan family, is the driving force behind the big occasion. He is the head person in the Great Britain GAA Central Council. In other words, he is the boss.

Alwyn Jones is the owner of the Field of Dreams at Frongoch in Snowdonia where around 1,800 volunteers were interned after the failed (in some respects) Easter Rising of April 1916. He is a Welsh Nationalist County Councillor with Plaid Cymru committed to the independence of Wales

from the UK.

Fittingly, the monument in Valentia slate marks the ‘other Croke Park’ where the unofficial 1916 All-Ireland final was played between Kerry and Louth on June 27, 1916.

GAA historians Fr Tom Looney, who supplied the wording on the monument, and Fr John Ahern will travel to Frongoch for this very low-key historic ceremony. They had ancestors interned there in 1916. I am 100 % sure the BBC will not be covering the ceremony.

RIVALRIES

In recent years, Dublin have dominated the All-Ireland, over Kerry mainly, but in the early 1900s the big rivalries were Kerry v Wexford and Louth. Kerry beat Louth in 1909 and the Wee County won in 1912. Kerry won back-to-back All-Irelands in 1913 and 1914. Wexford won the first four-in-a-row from 1915-1918.

On November 13, 1910 Louth were awarded the 1910 All-Ireland title when Kerry refused to travel to Dublin for the final because of a dispute with the Railway Company. Cork won in 1911 and Louth won in 1912. Kerry won in 1913 and 1914, defeating Wexford, and then Wexford won four on the bounce.

These great rivalries drew huge crowds for the Croke Cup, a fundraiser which eventually raised enough money to buy

the site at Jones’ Road, the present Croke Park site as we know it today. The GAA hadn’t the money to buy it but Frank Brazil Dineen held it in trust until the GAA had collected sufficient revenue from the Croke Cup series of games which went to a replay.

The Railway Company, who sponsored the magnificent Croke Cup, stipulated that whichever team won it two years in a row would be the owners of the magnificent silver trophy.

Dr Crokes, then representing Kerry, were awarded the magnificent silver trophy and it is still a prized possession.

Indeed, the GAA had earmarked Elm Park in Dublin’s south side as a suitable site. That is where the current St Vincent’s Hospital is situated. What a lucky break and surely new GAA President Jarlath Burns is savvy enough to know that the proposed €100 ticket for the All-Ireland is far too expensive. Lead the row-back, Jarlath.

No official All-Ireland final as such in 1916 but the Wolfe Tone Tournament between finalists Kerry and Louth took place instead in that remote prison field in Snowdonia on the 26th of June 1,800 detained volunteers.

Joe Stanley, nicknamed ‘Printer to the Rising’, was Games Secretary in the camp and recorded how “Gaelic football has been taken up with a great degree of enthusiasm and a large number of matches are being played daily”. (The prisoners were allowed out for recreation twice a day.)

All-Ireland final

“Already a Gaelic football and athletic carnival has been held of which exciting games between representatives of Kerry and Louth was the principal feature. A narrow win for Kerry by a point indicates the closeness and interesting nature of the contest” reference - Gaelic Athlete, Vol.1X- No. 238.

They named their stadium ‘Croke Park Monument’. Former Uachtarán Aogán Ó Fearghail presided at the Provincial Junior Shield Final, Yorkshire v Hertfordshire, played there on June 18. Larry McCarthy unveiled the Croke Park Monument on the site on June 10, 2022 thanks to the welcomed co-operation of Alwyn Jones and family

IMPORTANT

Kerry historian Seán O’Mahony’s seminal ‘Frongoch - University of Revolution’ tells us how Billy Mullins (Kerry player/ internee) recalled Kerry v Louth as being the most important game played in the camp. “We can assume there was plenty of ‘needle’ in the game”. This sprang from the controversial 1910 decision to award that year’s All-Ireland title to the Wee County. Three years later both sides met in the Croke Memorial Cup final and replay which garnered all funds necessary to buy Croke Park held in trust by an under-pressure Frank Brazil Dinneen. The drawn game was played on May 3, 1913 and ended with Kerry four points, Louth 1-1. An attendance of 26,000 spectators created the biggest recorded gate receipts of £750 (old Irish currency), a record gate and one would expect the replay a fortnight later, but it was delayed until June 27. Why?

The reason was that the student priests at Maynooth had persuaded Dick Fitzgerald (his brother was Fr Patrick Fitzgerald) to delay the game until they had holidays from college so that they could attend the replay. Wasn’t it seanchaí Eamonn Kelly who said “priests have the power”… The teams in the Frongoch All-Ireland are listed and the Kerry team will be familiar to many readers of this column. The Kerry team was selected from its thirty-seven internees and included twelve of their county panel. Some Killarney people are descendants of these players (and internees): Dick Fitzgerald (Captain), Paddy Cahill (Vice-Capt), John Byrne, Michael Doyle, Dan Healy, Willie Horgan, Michael Knightly, Tom McEllistrim, JJ and MJ Moriarty, Billy Mullins, Pat O’Shea, MJ O’Sullivan, Michael Spillane and James Wall. The Louth team drawn from its thirty-eight internees included some nine of their county panel: Tom Burke (Captain), Tom Matthews (Vice-Capt), Wm. Atkinson, Nicholas and JH Butterly, Peter Clifford, Michael Donnelly, Willie Horgan, James Jennings, Thomas and James Kelly, Patrick Kerr, Joseph J Layng, Owen McGough, Art O’Neill and Dan Tuite.

THE LEPRECHAUNS

Many more competitions and games were organised in the camp with teams named after Rising leaders. They staged a Leinster final won by Dublin and a novel Inter-Camp series with four teams including ‘The Leprechauns’ - players of smaller stature coached and led by Dick Fitzgerald which won the final. Internee Séamus Ó Maoileoin wrote an excellent book entitled ‘B’Fhiú an Braon Fola’ and made this telling comment: “the drop of blood was worth it”. He was one of the small internees, aptly described as the ‘dríodar’, the dregs and leftovers, after all the bigger fellas were picked. These small fellas were jeered and rubbished, while the pick of the finest All-Ireland players were chosen first. However, Dick Fitzgerald took charge of the Leprechauns and even though his own playing days were over yielding, Ó Maoileoin said, “ Dick taught us every trick in the book and if the elite players had half of the fierce spirit and competitiveness of The Leprechauns they would surely have won. Not so because Dickeen had the ‘gliocas an tsionnaigh’ (‘the sagacity of a cute fox’),” wrote Ó Maoileoin. “A prison guard observed, ‘If that’s what

they’re like at play, they must be bloody awful in a fight’.”

All efforts to identify the referee have failed me so far, but I imagine the game resembled in great similarity with the old Irish game of ‘caid’, the rough and tumble precursor to football. Gaeltacht people such as Dara Ó Cinnéide and the Ó Sé brothers speak of the caid and not the peil or football. Hurling was banned; no place for an offensive hurley in this prison.

THE BIG FELLA

Michael Collins became great friends with Dick Fitzgerald, the chief organiser. Collins, the forerunner of Fine Gael, was an outstanding sportsman and swept the winning role in the 100-yard sprint (in just over 10 seconds), the long jump and the hop, step and jump. He could only manage second in the standing jump. Most of the internees were released by Christmas 1916. Charlie McGuigan wrote a well-known song about internment in the north, ‘The Men Behind the Wire’. “But every man must stand behind, the men behind the wire.” With a little play on the words of McGuigan’s song, the chant from Kerry supporters in the 1970s to drown out the Hill 16 roar was inspirational. On Sunday the few will stand behind Dwyer.

Best of luck to Kerry this weekend.

Moving on up

Promising runner Lynch earns scholarship at top American college

Killarney middle distance runner Oisín Lynch is taking inspiration from newly crowned European 1500m champion Ciara Mageean as he gets set for the next stage of his career in the United States. This week Lynch confirmed that he will be heading Stateside after accepting a scholarship at Adams State University in Colorado. The promising 800m and 1500m competitor caught the eye of coaches at the leading American college after representing Ireland in the Youth Olympics and also by winning two national titles in recent months.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, the 18-year-old Killarney Valley AC athlete, who is currently doing his Leaving Cert at St Brendan’s College, says he one day hopes to emulate Mageean’s heroics on the international stage.

“The Irish are on the up at underage and at senior level,” Lynch notes. “We have

been improving a lot in recent years.

When you see Ciara Mageean winning the 1500m it just shows that it can be done by Irish people.

“Sometimes Irish athletes don’t really believe in themselves when they’re getting knocked out of championships by English or European athletes. Mageean winning that European title is definitely something to drive me on. It shows that I can actually do it.”

DREAM

For Lynch, moving to the United States is a hugely significant step, and one that he has dreamed about making since he was a child.

“It’s unbelievable. I always hoped I could –––earn a scholarship. I worked hard over the last few years, so it’s nice to see that work paying off.

“I had a few schools onto me but when

Adams State got in touch, I sized it up and I knew it was a really good opportunity.

“The fact that the college is at 7,500 feet… That’s a crazy altitude. It’s double the height of Carrauntoohil. Altitude training has massive benefits for distance running and nowadays nearly every pro spends most of their year training at altitude. The chance to get that training for the next couple of years is great.

“And their athletics programme is unbelievable. Coach Damon Martin has been there for 40 years and he has coached 12 Olympians. Adams State is in the top 15 for distance in the country and the standard out there in America is very high.”

Killarney Valley AC has made enormous strides since building its new, state-ofthe-art facility in 2020 and Lynch is a

grateful beneficiary of that progress.

“I can’t thank the club enough. Going back a couple of years we were training on grass in parks. When you want to be a track runner, it’s just not the same.

After a lot of hard work by a lot of good people, we managed to get a 200-metre track in Killarney. That’s massive for us and it’s all we need for training.

“The coaches down there are putting in the hard work, including my dad (Con), Tomás Griffin, Jean Courtney, Jerry Griffin, Bríd Stack, Alan Delaney… I could go on. It’s a great club and there are some good athletes coming through. It’s an exciting time for Killarney Valley.”

After Lynch completes his Leaving Cert, he will start preparing for life as a college athlete. He will study kinesiology in Colorado and on the track he hopes to keep on moving in the right direction. That means getting his times down (his current PBs are 1.50.59 over 800m and 3.51 over 1500m), representing Ireland, and hopefully winning a national title in America.

“Obviously I’ll take every step as it comes,” the ambitious Kerryman says, “but the Olympics is the main long-term target, hopefully in LA in 2028.”

SENIOR MEN: Our Senior Men captured a precious two points against An Ghaeltacht in Dirren on a blustery Sunday afternoon. Playing the first first half with the elements in their favour, points from Will Shine (2), Shaun Keane (2), Rob Leen (2), Micheal Devlin (2), Eoghan O’Sullivan and Podge O’Connor helped to build up a healthy 0-10 to 0-3 half time lead. Rob Leen and Will Shine (3) added to their totals in the second period as a tight defensive showing kept the back door shut. James O’Donoghue plundered a late 1-1 off the bench with Cian Gammell slaloming through to kick another point. A big step forward but a positive result is still needed in Glenflesk to rubberstamp a place in Division 1 in 2025. Team: Brian Kelly, Podge O'Connor (0-1) Darragh O’Doherty, Peter O’Sullivan, Jonathan Lyne, Danny Sheahan, Rob Leen (0-3), Jamie Alade, Cian Gammell (0-1), Eoghan O’Sullivan (0-1), Darragh Lyne, Micheal Devlin (0-2), Will Shine (0-5), Shaun Keane (0-2), David O’Sullivan. Subs ..Billy McGuire, Darragh Fleming, James O’Donoghue (1-1), Peter McCarthy, Mark Heffernan. The last round is fixed for the weekend of June 22nd/23rd where Glenflesk is the destination.

FEILE FESTIVITIES: A busy week fundraising for the upcoming Feile competi-

tion in Tipperary on the last weekend in June. On Friday we had a bingo night in the Plaza which was brilliantly supported. We had a lot of spot prizes, generous donated by various businesses in the town and of course the night wouldn't be the success that it was without the work behind the scenes. Sharon O’Shea had a crack unit assembled for the event with MC Shane McSweeney keeping the show on the road. Once breakfast was digested on Saturday it was onto Direen for the Cake Sale. This was done in conjunction with what is now the Annual U10 Blitz. To say it was a success would be an understatement with the place humming all afternoon. Laune Rangers, Rathmore, Beaufort, Glenflesk, Firies and Dr Crokes all participated with the overwhelming consensus being we'll all be back again next year. No accident as the organisation was top class and come Saturday evening, everyone could take a wellearned bow.

U9 BOYS: An away day in Kenmare on Thursday evening saw 22 boys take part in three games against the hosts with great skill and teamwork on display from both sides. Thank you to Kenmare for hosting us.

U11 BOYS: Listry were the opposition in Direen on Thursday evening for the next game in phase 2 of the County Go Games. In conditions ideal for football, 24 boys took to the field to play 2 games against a hard-working Listry outfit. Special thanks to our 2 referees, Sean Pierce and John Keane and also to Listry for visiting. Up next, we play Spa at home in Direen on Thursday 13th June. The boys are improving week on week and their hard work at training is really telling. Keep up the good work!

U13 BOYS: No joy for our U13 Boys team in their County League final against Finuge. The experience of playing in Austin Stack Park will stand to them as will all the hard work the group have put in at the start of the year. A tightly knit bunch since they all joined the Academy, there will be better days ahead. Hard luck to the team and management.

U14 BOYS: We hosted Kilcummin in Round 2 of the U14 East Kerry League on Wednesday evening in Derreen. The boys had a good win with all the players working hard and displaying a high skill level, following up on the first round win over Keel / Listry. We have our final game in the league later in the month against Firies. Thanks to Kilcummin for a good game and to referee Brian Fleming for excellent officiating.

U14 GIRLS: Laune Rangers, away in the last fixture in County League Division 3, was always going to be the toughest test. Made a little more arduous by the absence of some regulars, a couple of our U12 girls were called up. Playing with the wind in the first half, the girls grew with confidence as the scores came freely. Leading at half by 2-9 to 1-5, it would take a renewed focus by the team for the sec-

ond half. But the girls kept up a mighty effort going throughout, pushing forward while defending well and always tracking back to support each other. Another full panel affair ensured a well-earned win on the day. Thank you to our strong U12s as well who managed a full pitch with ease. The future is bright with them on board! Final score 3-18 to 1-7.

Dr Crokes GAA

SFL DIV. 1: Dr Crokes 5:15 Milltown Castlemaine 0:04. With game to spare we have won the 2024 County League having remained unbeaten in our 10 games. We started off the livelier of the two sides with Liam Randles opening the scoring with a goal from play in the second minute. Our goals seemed to continue from there with Paul Clarke, Evan Looney and Mark Fitzgerald all stepping up with first half goals. We led comfortably going in at the break, 4:05 to 0:02. The second half was very much like the first and we continued to dominate the game. It was also a credit to the team to see 11 different players getting their names on the score sheet. A second half goal from David Shaw sealed the deal for us and secured the SFL title. We face Rathmore in our final game of the league at home on Sunday June 23rd.

COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 2: Fossa played John Mitchels in their last home game of the county league on Sunday. Fossa found it hard to get into their rhythm in the first half and Mitchells made all the running, this wasn’t surprising as they are fighting to remain in Div 2 next season. Fossa did open the scoring, but Mitchells hit back with three points in a row, Tadgh and Emmett O’Shea did keep the scoreboard ticking but Mitchells struck for a goal in the 22nd to lead at the break, 1-06 to 0-05. Fossa upped the work rate in the second half and began to reel in the lead, in the 7th minute, a clever knock down by Cian O’Shea lead to Matt Rennie crashing home the ball to the Mitchells net to bring his team right back into the game. This was quickly followed by a lovely left footed effort from Emmett O’Shea and a Darren Ryan score to push Fossa ahead. Dan O’Connell, who led by example all day, kicked a fine point, Harry Buckley won a lot of hard ball around the middle and Eoin Talbot worked like a trojan in the second half, winning several turnovers and was very unlucky not to score a goal after a brilliant interception. Mitchells tried hard but didn’t have enough of a scoring threat in this half and Fossa ran out winners on a score of 1-11 to 1-09.

Team: Shane O’Sullivan, Cian Doyle,

The Fossa boys played some excellent football in that first half to build up a commanding lead of 4-10 to 1-4 going in at the break. The Crokes boys came out fighting in the second half and put fierce pressure on the Fossa back line. However, the Fossa boys held firm and won out on a score line of 5-15 to 3-9. Special mention to the four U12 Fossa boys - Aaron, Ryan, Sean and Mark who made their debut with the U14 lads.

DOUBLES MATCHPLAY: Well one would be forgiven for thinking they were at Solheim Cup should they have stumbled across the Ladies Doubles Matchplay final on Tuesday last at Beaufort Golf Club. It was certainly going to be a tough match with Noeleen MacKessy and Marian Kerrisk taking on Laura Furlong and Gerr Collins. The excitement and nerves as both pairings headed off to the first tee, setting the tone for what was going to be an extremely interesting round of golf. It was shot for shot and hole by hole they turned the matchplay final into a thrilling event, with the winning score on the 18th hole coming down to the final putt for Noeleen MacKessy and Marian Kerrisk to claim victory. The match truly epitomised what club matchplay is all about. Congratulations Noeleen and Marian on your great win.
