EXCLUSIVE: Independent’s Day as new Mayor set to be announced

A new Mayor of Killarney is set to announced on Friday. A meeting will take place around 12 noon on Friday – shortly before this week’s Killarney Advertiser hits the newsstands.

The Killarney Advertiser understands that a pact has been made with independent candidates and they will seek the majority control of Killarney Municipal District council for next five years. It is understood that mayoral duties will be shared between the five independent public servants that were elected earlier this month.

The role will be passed to each candidate based on their results in the recent local elections.

In those elections a whopping 72 per cent of those that voted gave first pref-

erence votes to independent candidates.

As a result Maura Healy-Rae will wear the ceremonial chain for the next 12 months and she will hand over to Martin Grady this time next year. Grady will assume the role of Deputy Mayor for the next year.

It will be both candidates first time holding mayoral positions.

The remaining three years will be shared between Brendan Cronin, John O’Donoghue and Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan depending on their finishing position in the recent elections.

As a result of the pact, Niall Kelleher and Marie Moloney, both of whom held mayoral positions during the lifetime of the previous council, will lose out this time around.

OPINION: Killarney

Anyone who was stuck in Killarney traffic on Wednesday evening this week will know that there are serious problems in town, says Sean Moriarty.

I took one hour to get from the Cork side to the Tralee side of the Bypass road on Wednesday. Side roads like Lewis Road and Park Road were choc-a-bloc. As we gear up for the traditional opening week of the summer season, school is out, the exams are finished, and two of the biggest events of the year are on our doorstep meaning things will only

get worse.

is facing a summer of

The Celebration of Irish America Friendship Festival takes place on Thursday.

The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is set for Saturday. Both events bring the necessary evil of street closures.

The Rock Road works and the resulting one-way system is set to continue for another four weeks.

The first meeting of Killarney Municipal District is on Friday – can we ask our newly elected council to make both traffic and the long-awaited Killarney to Farranfore road scheme an absolute priority?

Killarney-born New York travel agent passes away

There was an air of sadness as news filtered through Michael ‘Stephen' Healy passed away peacefully at his Pearl River home June 20.

The New York-based Killarney man was best known as a travel agent in New York that brought thousands of American visitors and returning emigrants to Killarney over the years.

Steve was born on January 12,1936 in Kilbrean and grew up with five siblings on a farm.

His father, Michael died when he was two, and his mother, Catherine, raised the family on her own.

He attended Tiernaboul National School and St. Brendan’s College and enjoyed rowing and playing Gaelic football for his local clubs.

Steve moved to London in 1954 where he worked in a tyre factory.

In 1956, he immigrated to Chicago, and served in the US Army, gaining US citizenship.

Steve later made his way to New York City in 1957 where he met his best friend, Connie O’Sullivan.

Connie introduced Steve to his wife Anne on a blind date - ironic because they both hailed from Killarney!

In June of 1966, Connie and Steve opened their first of several travel agencies.

After residing in the Bronx for a few

years, like many immigrant stories preceding them, Steve and Anne moved to the suburb of Pearl River, in October of 1966, and raised four children together.

As time passed, Steve and Anne became active members of the Kerrymen’s Association, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Rockland Gaelic Football Club, the Irish Travel Agents Association, and St. Margaret’s Church, among other groups. Steve also loved returning home to his beloved Killarney to see his various Spillane and Healy relatives.

Steve is survived by his wife Anne (nee Carbery), children Sean, Liam, Tara and Colleen, siblings Mary Spillane and John Joe Healy and extended family.

The man who built America loved Killarney

John McShain, who died in September 1989 at the age of 93, was a charismatic building contractor who became known as the man who built America.

A bachelor’s degree graduate from the La Salle University in Philadelphia, during his incredible lifetime, the wealthy construction baron, racehorse owner and philanthropist was the main contractor in the $4.25 million reconstruction of the White House during the Truman years from 1949-1952.

He was also responsible for the construction of the Pentagon, the Jefferson Memorial, the Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park, the JFK Centre for Performing Arts, Washington National Airport and many other notable US landmarks. The records of the McShain enterprises in the United States became an important part of the collection of the Hagley Museum and Library which is an archive for commerce, industry and technology, in Wilmington, DE.

life in the priesthood, at the age of 21 he somewhat reluctantly took hold of the reins of the company, John McShain Inc, following the death of his father.

A close, personal friend of former President of Ireland, Seán T O’Kelly, and a regular visitor to Killarney, in the late 1950s John McShain acquired Killarney House and its sprawling 25,000 estate and he spent the twilight of his life there until his death.

In 1973, the McShains gifted the priceless Innisfallen Island, Ross Castle and 8,000 acres of parkland, mountains and lake to the State and an agreement was reached that, when Mr and Mrs McShain passed on, Killarney House and Gardens would be given to the Irish Government for a very nominal sum.

When his wife, Mary, died in 1998, their daughter Sr Pauline, carried out her father’s wishes and handed the keys and the deeds of the property to the people.

Born in Philadelphia in 1898, McShain was the youngest son of Slaughtmanus, Co. Derry-born Catholic immigrants, John and Catherine McShain. John Snr went to seek his fortune in America in

A lifelong Republican, John McShain also owned some of the world’s most valuable thoroughbred racehorses and enjoyed a string of top-notch successes in blue riband events like the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the Ascot Gold Cup, the Irish Derby and the St Leger.

John and Mary McShain are buried side by side in his native Philadelphia but their incredible legacy will always live on in their adopted home of Killarney.

McShain family’s contribution to be celebrated

The generosity of the man who built America also created a more spectacular Killarney and that incredible deed will be celebrated in great style in the town on Wednesday and Thursday next.

Killarney will always be extremely grateful to the McShain family, not only for the gift of Killarney House and Gardens, but for the donation of Inisfallen Island, Ross Castle and 8,000 acres of parkland, mountains and lake which John and Mary McShain presented to the town.

That remarkable kindness, when added to the generosity of the Bourn Vincent family in Muckross, helped to create Ireland’s first national park and enhance Killarney’s reputation as the country’s

Volunteers required for Celebration of Irish American Friendship festival

The organisers of the Celebration of Irish American Friendship that will take place on July 4 are looking for volunteers to help run the event.

The main event in the Celebration of Irish American Friendship will be a rousing street party with hugely popular local band Truly Diverse providing the music and everybody is being invited to join in what will be a beat on the street with

a stamp of trademark Killarney quality.

"The Celebration of Irish American Friendship will take place next week. We are calling for volunteer support from the community now,” said an event spokesperson.

“Be part of Killarney's vibrant volunteer community, no expertise required.”

If you are available to support on the day, send your name and number to the festival’s volunteer line 087 643 7596.

tourist capital.

The valued relationship will be very much to the fore during next week’s Celebration of Irish American Friendship with the captivating story of John McShain to be told, through poetry, music and song, in a special hour-long production at the Anam Arts and Cultural Centre on Thursday, July 4 (5.00pm).

Co-produced and choreographed by richly talented locals Noel Patrick O’Sullivan and Fiona Crowley, it will tell the McShain story through the thought-provoking poetry of Tim Buckley, the musical talents of Tony O’Flaherty and Miriam O’Sullivan, the voice of Mary Culloty O’Sullivan and dance courtesy of the Maureen Hegarty Academy.

“History will tell you what happened but a song will tell you how it felt,” Noel Pat-

rick O’Sullivan said.

This year also there will be an opportunity to remember the estimated six million Irish people who emigrated to the US since 1820, whose descendants now proudly describe themselves as Irish-American.

The big attraction of the Celebration of Irish American Friendship will, of course, be the spectacular parade on Thursday with fantastic floats, favourite Disney characters, beautiful princesses, marching bands and colourful cheerleaders.

The parade will start at Killarney Outlet Centre at 7.00pm and it will pass through Fair Hill, College Street, Plunkett Street and Main Street and several hundred people are expected to line the street for the gala occasion.

Killarney cleaner than European norms

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has said there is real cause for celebration this week following the town’s return to the top ten in the Irish Business Against Litter League (IBAL).

Killarney has been declared Cleaner than European Norms – the highest possible rating – and the adjudicators were lavish in their praise of the effort being made in the town.

Chamber noted that the judges were par-

ticularly impressed by the work put in to tackle the commercial bins storage area at the Glebe car park which was identified as a problem area in previous reports but it was awarded the top grade on this occasion.

The Chamber executive said there is great credit due to the management and staff and the elected members of Killarney Municipal District Council for successfully addressing that issue and to the outdoor staff who work tirelessly every day to continue the war against litter on

Great Southern again partners with the Ring of Kerry Cycle

Great Southern Killarney continue their longstanding support of The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle again as one of the main partners for this year’s event, taking place on July 6.

Now in its 42nd year, the cycle takes place along the scenic 170km Ring of Kerry route and supports a wide variety of worthy causes throughout the county, with Great Southern Killarney cycling on behalf of Brú Columbanus this year.

As well as continuing to support as a partner, Great Southern Killarney have their own milestone to celebrate.

“We are delighted to support The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle again this year. This

It was also very noteworthy, Chamber added, that very favourable mention was made of the campaign to eliminate single use coffee cups and Killarney is leading the way nationally in that regard.

It is now hoped that the government will introduce the long-promised levy on single use cups so that the rest of the country can benefit to the same extent that Killarney has.

“The most pleasing aspect of the entire report is that the IBAL adjudicators noted that there were no heavily littered sites in the entire town and that most of the areas inspected were deemed to be spotless and deserving of an A grade,” Chamber added.

year’s cycle shares a wonderful synergy with Great Southern Killarney, as the hotel celebrates 170 years in business this July, tying in perfectly with the 170kms of the route,” said Michael Jacobi, the Managing Director of the Hayfield Family Collection.”

“The Ring of Kerry Cycle is always a great day out for everyone involved and we are grateful for the great work of the organising committee and all the volunteers to make this such a memorable day for so many people each year. A number of our team are training hard at the moment, and we look forward to seeing everyone out there on the day.”

Killarney Legion Féile adventure continues

The Killarney Legion Under 15 Ladies Féile adventure continues this Saturday when they travel to Moyle Rovers GAA in County Tipperary, where they will represent Kerry in the Regional Féile finals for 2024.

Having won the Kerry competition in May, the girls now advance to the regional finals where they are drawn to play teams from Limerick, Wexford and Westmeath in the group stages.

A lot of hard work has been put in behind the scenes within the club to fundraise for the occasion. A club bingo night was a roaring success which was followed by the clubs annual Under 10 girls’ blitz during which a monster bake sale was held.

The club also embarked on a Re-Turn to Féile initiative, whereby members were asked to donate their plastic bottles and cans so the club could benefit from a ReTurn refund.

“Great credit goes to our Under 15 ladies on not only qualifying for the event but in the way they took ownership of the fundraising ideas we put in place to selffund the occasion,” said Ladies Chairperson Ted Healy.

“Special mention also to our young ladies families for the support received over the past few weeks. Of course these events don’t run themselves and would not have been possible but for the hard work of a group of volunteers behind the scenes and the support of all club members.”

“We are very grateful to all our sponsors who very kindly got behind our events in donating prizes for our bingo night and indeed to all who contributed the delicious home baking to our bake sale. “

“It has been great to see the club get behind this group of young women to ensure Saturday is a day that will live long in the memory.”

The team were presented with their new Féile gear at training on Tuesday night where the excitement was palpable.

Award

for Killarney Charity shop

Vincent’s Killarney has won the Team of the Year Award at the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul’s annual conference.

The awards were presented at the Vincent’s 2024 Retail Conference held earlier this month (6th June) in University College Cork attended by approximately 200 volunteers and managers from the Vincent’s network of shops throughout Ireland.

“Vincent’s shops are important to their local communities, generating surpluses that are used to support those most in

need in those communities and operating in a sustainable manner. There are over 230 SVP shops throughout Ireland, trading under the ‘Vincent's’ name.

Vincent’s shops are a hugely important aspect of the service SVP provides to those who seek its assistance. Not only do the shops provide goods at affordable prices and help reconnect people, disconnected by poverty, they also provide an income source for the Society, which is directed back into the local communities,” said an SVP spokesperson.

Local artist's exhibition moves to New Road

An exhibition by local artist Dolores Lyne has transferred to the Gallery at the Government Buildings in Dublin after a month at Killarney Library.

‘To The Letter’ is an exhibition of paintings and works by Lyne. They are inspired by a trove of family letters between two brothers, General Liam Lynch Chief of staff IRA and his brother Tom from 1917 -1923. The large folding canvases evoke the locations where the letters were written, the hard- to-find safe houses and remote farmsteads from the Cork and Kerry borders and beyond, a turbulent and dangerous time in Ireland’s history. The exhibition was originally commissioned as part of Cork County Council’s Decade of Centenary programme.

Pat Delaney Memorial Cup Golf Classic

St Pats East Kerry are running their annual Pat Delaney Memorial Cup golf classic at the Ross Golf Club on Saturday July 6.

The format is a 3 person scramble over ten holes and the entry fee is €120 per team. The entry fee will include a goody bag for each player and a cup of Tea/ Coffee and scone when the round is completed. Tee times are available from 8am.

Killarney Credit Union is the main sponsor of the event, in recognition of Pat having been a highly respected and effective Chairman of the Credit Union. Pat was a Chairman and Vice President of St Pats East Kerry and he started the annual golf classic over ten years ago as a fundraiser for the Club. Known for his

excellent organisation skills and a master salesman who enjoyed persuading the golfers of the Killarney area to take part in the event, he acted as master of ceremonies on the day, meeting and greeting every team prior to their games to ensure that everyone had an enjoyable day.

On the morning of the golf classic, back in June 2018, Pat sadly passed away. His contribution to hurling and to St Pats demanded that his legacy be commemorated. Pat had also made a major contribution to the Killarney Credit Union at a time of major change in their business, leading the two organisation, St Pats and Killarney Credit Union to combine and rebrand the annual golf classic in Pat’s name.

support and services offered by DSI Munster branches to their members. Such vital services include Speech and Language Therapy, Employment Opportunity, Occupational Therapy and other life enhancing aid to people with Down syndrome and their families.

“We have been eagerly anticipating the return of the Tour to Kerry this August, there’s lots of excitement for the pedals to turn again,”said John O’Connor from Down Syndrome Kerry.

30 years of Innisfallen Island Mass

The 30th anniversary of the annual special concelebrated Mass on Innisfallen Island was held last Friday.

A huge local crowd turned out for the special occasion and were ferried to the island by the boatmen of the Killarney lakes. Now in its 30th year, the Mass was originally an idea by Geoffrey O'Donoghue who sadly died four years after it began.

Gaelic Games commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh has passed away

RTE has announced that legendary Gaelic Games commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh has passed away at the age of 93.He was one of , if not the greatest GAA broadcasters of all time.

Although trained as a teacher, the Dingle native took up sports commentary at the 1949 Railway Cup Final on St Patrick's Day.

“He continued teaching up until the mid-1980s when he became a full-time broadcaster with RTÉ,” said an RTÉ statement,.

“Mr Ó Muircheartaigh took over as RTÉ Radio 1's premier radio commentator when Míchael O'Hehir retired from broadcasting in 1985.

“ His last All-Ireland final came in 2010, when he commentated on Cork's win over Down in the football decider, and he retired from broadcasting in October of that year,"

A well-known figure throughout the land, Ó Muircheartaigarh, visited Killarney many times.

One of his most-recent visits was in 2019 when the veteran GAA commentator told his best football stories and directed a workshop at the ‘Storied Kerry’ annual conference in November 2019.

Tributes pour in for “powerhouse” of Irish broadcasting

Tributes have been pouring in for the late Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh.

A native of West Kerry, Mícheál began his broadcasting career with a test commentary on a Railway Cup Hurling match at Croke Park in 1949, the first game of hurling he ever witnessed. From then to his retirement following the 2010 All-Ireland Football Final between Cork and Down, his was the voice for many generations of Gaelic Games supporters.

Micheál was very witty and had a remarkable turn of phrase. His GAA commentaries were thrilling, exciting and memorable.

He had enormous pride in the fact that Kerry people were everywhere. Everyone knew he was a true Kerry man, no matter where you would find him. We were truly honored as Kerry people to have him as part of our tribe.

Micheál has left a remarkable legacy that speaks to the richness of Irish tradition, Irish folklore, Irish culture, and of course, Gaelic Games, both football and hurling. He was a legend in his lifetime, and he remains a legend in his death

“He was a great Kerry man who had a unique voice and created excitement in all the games he commentated on,” said TD Danny Healy Rae. “It was better to listen when he commentated on the radio than to watch the game on the tel-

evision because there was more drama.

He was a powerhouse of a man.

TD Pa Daly said he was “irreplaceable”.

“He meant the world to so many who I know will all have his wife Helena and his children in their thoughts today,” said Daly.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill has expressed his sadness at the passing of the great Kerry broadcaster.

“You brought so much joy to Irish people here at home and throughout the world. You had such a wonderful, distinguished voice and added enormously to our national sports.

“Micheál was a gentle, soft spoken gaelgóir and his voice had such a beautiful melodic tone, that always drew you in to listen to his commentaries. And these were filled with the poetry and wit of a true Kerry genius.” said Councillor Cahill.

Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley said:

“I am saddened beyond measure to learn of the passing of Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh. He was a legendary figure in GAA circles, but he was a legendary figure in all our homes and in all of our hearts.

“He was synonymous with what it was and what it is to be a true and great Irish gentleman.

“His unique love of Irish language, culture and sport. His incredible civility and courtesy. His gentleness and his extraordinary compassion and kindness.

The very best of us and how we would like the world to see us.”

“He was an extraordinarily kind and obliging man. He was the most accessible individual. He never refused an opportunity to do some fundraiser or visit some part of the country where he could be a support to either individuals to families or to community.”

In Munster, Mícheál’s commentaries on the Munster Hurling Championship will live long in the memory as he described the feats of Christy Ring, Jimmy Smyth, Joe McKenna, Pat Fox, Ken McGrath and so many others to those listening far and wide.

Mícheál also broadcasted many mem-

orable Munster Football Finals, none more so than during Kerry’s Golden Years teams in the 1970s and 1980s and their annual deciders with old rivals Cork.

Munster GAA Chairman Ger Ryan said

“Mícheál was one of the most knowledgeable, most respected and best loved Gaels. His unique style, quick wit and sheer enthusiasm for our games always left the listener in no doubt about what was happening and wanting more, irrespective of the quality of the match.

“His love of and use of the Irish language was legendary and helped in no small way to keep our native tongue to the forefront of all who listened to his thousands of commentaries over the years.”

Some of Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh’s best one liners

Setanta Ó hAilpín....the original Setanta from the old Gaelic stories was ten foot tall, had ten fingers on each hand and ten toes on each foot but even he couldn't be playing better hurling than his namesake here today.”

…and Brian Dooher is down injured. And while he is, I’ll tell ye a little story: I was in Times Square in New York last week, and I was missing the Championship back home. So I approached a newsstand and I said, “I suppose ye wouldn’t have The Kerryman, would ye?” To which, the Egyptian behind the counter turned to me and he said, “Do you want the North Kerry edition, or the South Kerry edition?” He had both – so I bought both. And Dooher is back on his feet…

Colin Corkery on the 45 lets go with the right boot. Its over the bar. This man shouldn’t be playing football. He’s made an almost Lazarus-like recovery from a heart condition. Lazarus was a great man but he couldn’t kick points like Colin Corkery.

Anthony Lynch, the Cork corner-back, will be the last person to let you down –his people are undertakers.

The stopwatch has stopped. It’s up to God and the referee now. The referee is Pat Horan. God is God.

Dublin have scored two points, one from the hand and one from the land.

Teddy McCarthy to Mick McCarthy, no relation, Mick McCarthy back to Teddy McCarthy, still no relation.

I saw a few Sligo people at Mass in Gardiner Street this morning and the omens seem to be good for them. The priest was wearing the same colours as the Sligo jersey! 40 yards out on the Hogan Stand side of the field, Ciarán Whelan goes on a rampage… it’s a goal! So much for religion.

He grabs the sliothar, he’s on the 50! He’s on the 40! He’s on the 30… he’s on the ground!

Pat Fox out to the forty and grabs the sliothar. I bought a dog from his father last week. Fox turns and sprints for goal… the dog ran a great race last Tuesday in Limerick… Fox, to the 21, fires a shot – it goes to the left and wide… and the dog lost as well.

He kicks the ball lán san aer. Could’ve been a goal, could’ve been a point… it went wide.

I see John O’Donnell dispensing water on the sideline. Tipperary, sponsored by a water company. Cork, sponsored by a tae company. I wonder will they meet later for afternoon tae.

In the first half they played with the wind. In the second half they played with the ball.

1-5 to 0-8… well, from Lapland to the Antarctic, that’s level scores in any man’s language.

Pat Fox has it on his hurl and is mo-

toring well now, but here comes Joe Rabbitte hot on his tail… I’ve seen it all now, a Rabbitte chasing a Fox around Croke Park!

Stephen Byrne with the puck out for Offaly. Stephen, one of 12. All but one are here to-day, the one that’s missing is Mary, she’s at home minding the house. And the ball is dropping i lár na bpáirce…

Teddy looks at the ball, the ball looks at Teddy…

Mike Houlihan for Limerick. Houlihan, the cattle jobber. He had his jaw broken by a kick from a bullock two months ago. He’s back now. ‘Twas some bullock that broke Mike Houlihan’s jaw!

Danny ‘The Yank’ Culloty: he came down from the mountains and hasn’t he done well.

Seán Óg Ó hAilpín: his father’s from Fermanagh, his mother’s from Fiji. Neither a hurling stronghold.

Rory Darcy receives a fitting send off from St. Olivers National School

Mr Darcy was principal of the school for 19 years – up until 2021 when he took up a different role.

It was hoped by many, that he would someday return to the school, but instead he has decided to fully retire from teaching.

It was this that sparked last week’s special celebration.

“What a day it was! It all started with a beautiful mass in the Church of the Resurrection led by Fr Seán Jones and concelebrated by Fr Niall and Fr Jim. The miserable rain couldn’t dampen the

spirits as our school community came together to celebrate the retirement of our much loved former principal Rory D’Arcy,” said a school statement.

A gathering of retired teachers, past and present members of the parents’ council and school staff followed in the school hall where again the choir added to the event with a performance of a medley of songs rewritten to tell the story of Rory’s time in St. Oliver’s, all while photos depicting the same journey were shown on the big screen.”

50 years of the VW Golf to be celebrated at racecourse car show

It is the Germans’ favourite car, it has shaped a whole generation, created a new vehicle class and established itself as an international bestseller in over 70 countries with more than 37 million units sold. We love the Golf,” said Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer earlier this year.

The club is inviting owners of cars of 20 years or older to its Killarney Racecourse event on July 7.

€3.6million

The lives of children across Ireland will be improved in multiple ways through 122 RTÉ Toy Show Appeal grants announced this week, which were made possible by the generosity of viewers of last November’s Late Late Toy Show.

The response from Late Late Toy Show viewers to the appeal will help transform the lives of 1.1 million children, young people and their families in Ireland, with every county on the island benefitting from grants totaling €3.6million.

The RTÉ Toy Show Appeal began in 2020 and was inspired by the story of Saoirse Ruane from Kiltullagh Co Galway, who won the hearts of the nation

with her appearance on The Late Late Toy Show. Saoirse sadly passed away in March of this year, and RTÉ Director General Kevin Backhurst today spoke of

Saoirse’s enduring legacy with The Toy Show Appeal.

RTÉ Director General Kevin Backhurst said: “The RTÉ Toy Show Appeal is one

of the most important things that we do as an organisation. We are so grateful for the support of our Late Late Toy Show audience whose generosity has ensured that RTÉ can continue to make a positive difference to the lives of thousands of children, and their families across the island, north and south.

"Children have always been the inspiration behind the Late Late Toy Show and have, in turn, inspired the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal, not least, Saoirse Ruane who will be remembered as someone who made such a positive and lasting impact on us all. Her memory will live on through the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal and the many young lives that will be transformed.”

The RTÉ Toy Show Appeal, in partnership with the Community Foundation Ireland, announced today that five charities are to receive transformative grants of €120,000 each.

Killarney connection to United Nations Sustainable Development programme

Machaela O’Leary, Sales Manager for Too Good To Go, the world’s largest marketplace for surplus food, was celebrating the app being selected as a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Champion for the 2024-2025 Programme.

Michaela who hails from Killarney attended the event, which took place at the Camden Court Hotel in Dublin yesterday, and was hosted by Minister Eamon Ryan.

Too Good To Go has a selection of partners in Kerry including Bake My Day, Luna Bakery and Lir Café and participating SuperValu and Aldi stores.

The Sustainable Development Goals Champions Programme, spearheaded by the Irish government, is a testament

to the early and proactive steps being taken to create a more sustainable country at national level.

Too Good To Go’s inclusion in this programme is not only a recognition of past efforts but also a call to further action and collaboration aligning closely with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3: Halving food waste by 2030.

“Too Good To Go is so honoured to be an SDG Champion this year. Our mission is to reduce food waste, and we do this via our marketplace app, which connects people with local businesses that have unsold food.

It's staggering to think that 40% of all food is wasted—that's about 80 thousand meals every second! That's why we're dedicated to inspiring and empowering everyone to cut food waste, in line with SDG 12.3's goal to halve food waste by 2030,” said Machaela.

Calls for a dedicated Irish sports TV channel

A Kerry Fianna Fáil County Councillor is calling on RTÉ to liaise with the Government to push for a dedicated Irish Sports Channel, to be included in any financial

planning with regard to our TV Licence. Councillor Michael Cahill has claimed that Ireland has been poorly served with sport’s coverage on our national televi-

sion channels in recent times and with plans being made now to change the licensing system, a golden opportunity exists to ensure people can have affordable access to watch their favourite sport with Irish involvement.

“We are for the most part, a nation of sport’s fanatics and we follow our Irish heroes in an endless list of codes when we can. Recently, with the advent of streaming, not everybody can have access to watch even our own GAA games and I believe it is the duty of our Government and RTÉ to correct this anomaly,” said Councillor Cahill.

ment Officer at MTU, said, “We’re delighted to have H2 Compliance coming on board to sponsor the Athletics Club. Given that the company has had an on-campus presence at the MTU’s Rubicon for a number of years, it feels like a very natural partnership. We’re incredibly grateful to them for their investment in our athletes. I know that their support will be transformative for the club and will go a long way in helping MTU’s athletes to flourish.”

“The setting up of a dedicated Sports Channel within the RTÉ stable to date, has probably not come to pass due to financial considerations. But I believe that we now have the perfect opportunity to bring it forward with a review of our TV licence system ongoing," said the Rossbeigh-based Councillor.

"Many households are paying out hundreds of Euro annually to companies from other jurisdictions, to watch their favourite sport heroes and teams. We can now plan to provide this service with our own national provider and we can ensure our own sports can get widespread viewing here, interspersed with many other sports,” added Councillor Cahill.

Gaelscoil Faithleann says yes to French

Gaelscoil Faithleann celebrated the last day of the 'Say Yes to Languages' eight-week French module in style last week

Principal Lisa Ní Larlaithe was delighted to give the already bilingual children the chance to learn French this year and it proved to be a very enjoyable journey for all.

The 8 week module was introduced in primary schools in 2021 by Post Primary Language Ireland, PPLI.

Hélène Olivier-Courtney, director

of French For All Killarney School of French, has been delivering the modules in many schools across Kerry.

"It has been a wonderful experience to work under the national initiative. The goal is to instil curiosity and love for the language through enjoyable and creative activities that allow the children to be very proactive in their learning.

The initiative also promotes inclusion through team work and meaningful school projects,” she said. “It has been a treat to work with Gaelscoil Faithleann where principal, all teachers and SNAs were so interested and involved. This overall school approach has helped promote the discovery of French and the culture francophone as well as a

reflexion on the motivation to learn languages in general.”

“The sixth class students are now well-prepared for their language journey in secondary school.”

“The module will be extended to 10 weeks in 2024 and I am looking forward to delivering it in many schools again.”

CAO Change of Mind facility closes on July 1

The final CAO Change of Mind deadline is on July 1st at 5pm and it will not be possible to make changes after this deadline!

So it is really important that you take some time to look at the details of your CAO application, particularly your course choices ahead of the deadline. To use the Change of Mind facility you simply log on to www.cao.ie, click on ‘My Application’ and log in with your CAO number, date of birth and account password. You can add, take out and amend your course choices with the exception of ‘Restricted’ courses which for the most part can’t be added in at this stage. You may be permitted to introduce a restricted course which shares the exact same assessment procedures as a course you have applied for by 1st February but you will need to check with the relevant Higher Education Institution (HEI) before introducing such a course. Use the following CAO Change of Mind checklist as you review the details of your CAO application and make the necessary changes ahead of the final deadline on July 1st.

Check that all your details are correct including personal information, qualifications & assessment (including educational and exemption) details and course choices.

Take out courses that you are no longer interested in.

Include courses on both categories, Level 8 & Level 7/6. This gives you the best chance of getting 2 offers when the Round 1 Offers come out (the top choice that you qualify for on each list). You will then have to choose which one you prefer.

Fill in as many of the 20 choices as you can. You have the option to fill up 10 on both sides, which gives you 20 chances of getting a college place.

Check the Alert Lists on www.cao.ie.

Some very interesting new courses have been added in several colleges since the CAO Handbook was published last September.

Research the detail of every course that you are including on your CAO application – take particular note of entry requirements and modules so that you choose courses which you are able for, interested in and that suit how you

learn. This cuts down on the chance of making the wrong choice.

List your courses in ORDER OF PREFERENCE. This is the golden rule of CAO. No one knows what the points will be for 2024 until the day the Round 1 offers come out on August 28th and equally you won’t know your Leaving Cert results until they are issued on August 23rd. My advice is don’t try to second guess either of them and before 5pm on July 1st make sure that your course choices are list in ORDER OF PREFERENCE! This means listing your favourite course in your favourite college first, your second favourite next and so on down to number 10.

Include courses that you are confident of getting – ‘banker courses’, but make sure you are interested in the course content.

An Exceptional Late Application deadline applies only to existing 3rd level students who want to change courses and re-apply for new course choices through CAO. The closing date for such applications is July 22nd at 5pm.

Remember that you have lots of options open to you outside of CAO which are still taking applications – Further Education & Training options including Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses, joint tertiary degrees, apprenticeships, traineeships, national learning network courses and some study abroad options.

SUSI Student Grant Scheme

The Student Grant Scheme is the main financial support scheme for students studying in Ireland and abroad. SUSI has a helpdesk to assist applicants. The email is support@susi.ie and the telephone number is 0818 888 777.

Q. When does the application process for SUSI Grants open?

A. The student grant application process is open to all applicants since Thursday, 4th April 2024

If you submit your application before the priority closing dates, your application will be assessed as a priority. The priority closing dates are:

• 6 June 2024, for renewal applications

• 11 July 2024, for new applications

Q. Do you have to reapply for the grant each year?

A. Yes, you are approved for one year at a time e.g. if you are starting a 3 year course, you will have to reapply each year. If there is any change in your circumstances, you will need to let SUSI know.

Q. What do I need before starting my application?

A. You must make your grant application on-line. To register with SUSI and apply online for a student grant, you will need your Personal Public Service (PPS) number, an email address and a phone number. The applicant is the student not the parent.

Q. Do I need to know the course which I will be taking before applying?

A. No, you do not need to know what course you will be taking to apply online. If you ticked the SUSI box on your CAO application, the CAO will notify SUSI of the course that you have accepted

Q. Who qualifies for a student grant?

A. There are a number of conditions which applicants must satisfy and to qualify for a student grant, you must meet all the conditions of the scheme. These include:

• Nationality condition

• Residence condition

• Means test

• Approved course of study: you must be attending an approved course of study

• Progression: you must be progressing from your previous level of study

• Maximum period of grant assistance

You can get an indication of your eligibility by using the Eligibility Indicator on www.susi.ie

Q. What does the student grant cover?

A. Student grants are divided into Maintenance grant and Fee grants

Maintenance grants help students with their living costs. Fee grants pay tuition fees for students who do not qualify for the Free Fees Scheme. Fee grants can also pay the Student Contribution and the cost of essential field trips.

Q. What is taken into account in the means test?

The means test for a student grant in 2024-2025 is based on you or your family's gross income for the previous full tax year (2023). However, if you or your family have had a change of circumstances (which is likely to be permanent) since 31 December 2023 your changed circumstances will be taken into account.

Q. Is that the parent’s income only?

A. No, it is the parent’s income and the student’s income, however €7,925 of the student’s income which they earn outside term time is excluded. However if a student has job during term time at weekends for example, that income will be counted in the means test and added to the parents income.

Q. What type of limits apply to the grant?

A. Well, it varies, but if the student was coming from a family with less than four dependent children, in order to qualify for the maximum rate of grant the total net income in the previous tax year would have to have been €40,875 or less. However, if there is more than one student attending college from the same household, the limit may be increased by €4,950 for each student. You should talk with your local Citizens Information Centre and they will go through your particular circumstances with you.

Q. How much is the maximum amount of Student Grant?

A. The SUSI grant rate you get depends on the following factors:

• Your assessed means

• The distance you normally live from the college you are going to attend

• If you are a disadvantaged student If you normally live 30 kilometres or less from your college you get the adjacent rate. If you live further away than 30 kilometres, you get the non-adjacent rate. This is based on the distance of where you ordinarily lived in the year before you started college ie. your home address not college address.

The maximum non-adjacent rate is €4,292 (paid over 9 months €476.89 per month)

The maximum adjacent rate is €1,774 Disadvantaged students can qualify for a special rate of maintenance grant.

If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Killarney – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

You can also contact us by telephone or email.

SERIOUS BUSINESS

Kerry and Derry meet in eagerly anticipated quarter-final

After six months of prep work that included three games in the McGrath Cup, seven in the league, a training camp in Portugal, two games in the Munster Championship, and three more in the All-Ireland group stage, it’s time to get serious.

Finally, following 15 fixtures of questionable merit, Kerry’s quest to capture the 2024 All-Ireland title begins properly on Sunday. They will have to bring their best version of themselves to Croke Park to ensure that it doesn’t end on Sunday, too.

Standing in The Kingdom’s path are Derry, the side who gave them a good rattle in last year’s semi-final before eventually yielding in the closing minutes. The Ulstermen shot the lights out in the first half of that encounter but Kerry showed their character by holding

firm and finishing stronger, eventually winning an absorbing slugfest by two points (1-17 to 1-15).

This year, under the leadership of Tyrone man Mickey Harte, Derry beat Kerry in Tralee in Round 1 of the league before powering on to the Division 1 title in the spring. By this point they were considered serious All-Ireland contenders – understandably so having defeated both Kerry and Dublin – but they ran out of steam in the Ulster Championship, losing to Donegal by six points in the quarter-final.

That came as a shock but perhaps more shocking was their form in the All-Ireland group stage as they came up short against Galway (by four points) and Armagh (by 11).

They made it through in third place by getting the better of Westmeath and they were gritty in their penalty shootout triumph over Mayo in the preliminaries last Saturday. But their form has been inconsistent at best, so it’s difficult to get an accurate read on where they are.

The same can be said of Kerry, albeit for different reasons. Jack O’Connor’s men have won their last eight games in a row and so far they have navigated the championship with ease. The question is, who have they played? And, more to

the point, are they ready for a genuine contender? We'll find out when David Coldrick throws in the ball on Sunday afternoon.

Kerry v Derry forms part of a double header with Donegal v Louth (1.15pm). Both matches will be shown live on RTÉ. On Saturday, at the same venue, Armagh play Roscommon (4pm) and holders Dublin take on Galway (6.15pm).

Both of these games will be on GAAGO. It will be a poignant weekend at GAA HQ as players, officials and spectators pay tribute to the late Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, who sadly died this week aged 93. The Kerryman was the voice of the GAA and his inimitable style of commentary lit up so many games over the decades. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.

Are you doing the Ring?

It’s all systems go for the 42nd instalment of the Ring of Kerry charity cycle, writes Eamonn Fitzgerald

“Are you doing the Ring?” That is the frequently asked question at this time of year, as it has been for the past 42 years. It’s getting close now, just one week to go before the Ring of Kerry 2024 gets underway.

Jordan Lee, the Irish Paralympic high jumper will officially start the Ring of Kerry cycle on July 6 in Killarney. He is a member of the local Killarney Valley AC. What an inspirational athlete! He is preparing for his second Olympics, and he is undertaking all his training locally. Brendan Coffey, a member of the organising committee, informed me earlier this week that registrations are still open for the 2024 ROK, but there will be a cap of 4,500 cyclists because of the logistics involved and to ensure that all participants have a safe and enjoyable day on the 110-mile (171km) circuit. You can register at ringofkerrycycle.ie/ register-2024.

It is a cycle and not a race, so cyclists going on ROK for the first time should be mindful that the prime aim of this wonderful event is fundraising for so many deserving local charities.

To date, over €19 million has been raised by volunteers and there are so

many volunteers, not just the cyclists but the whole organising committee. It may appear to be a one-day event but the planning for the next ROK commences the day after each year's event so cyclists can enjoy that wonderful trip around the majestic Ring of Kerry.

Tier 1 beneficiaries this year are Comfort for Chemo, Focus Ireland, St Francis Special School, and Breakthrough Cancer Research. There are also Tier 2 and Tier 3 beneficiaries who will also receive funding.

The Irish Cancer Society are running the 170km MyWay which allows people to cycle 170km in their own area at their own pace over a few days.w

QUESTIONS

I did get answers to some questions that cyclists have, particularly those who may be doing the ROK for the first time. With the vast experience gained over 42 years of staging this mammoth charity event, the organisers have tweaked the structure of the day. Times have changed and E-Bikes have become more popular. E-cyclists who are raising money for their preferred charity are welcome to participate. However, they

should bring a spare battery to avoid queuing up at some charging points along the way.

The control centre in Killarney is in constant phone contact with key personnel such as Paul Curtis who heads up the mechanical backup team. Even a basic puncture can disappoint a cyclist but Paul and his team are only a phone call away once more.

On one of the years I did the ROK, we started at the International Hotel but my friend got his first puncture outside the current Easons. Swift support from the backup mechanics had him on the road very quickly until he reached Ballydowney Bridge. Puncture number two, and the third one came at The Gap Cross. Was he cross? Not at all. Such stoicism and then it was all good from there on. He had a tale to tell at the finishing line and said he was determined to finish after collecting so much money for his favourite charity. Once again the focus is on a cycle and a fundraiser for a charity. Can you start at another point away from Killarney and still cycle the 110miles? The answer is ‘yes’ but that cyclist will not have the comfort of the backup teams, road closures (only for a certain time)

and no sweep cars to get you out of trouble. The marvellous services of the Irish Red Cross, Order of Malta and the Civil Defence will not be able to service cyclists who start their ROK at points other than Killarney. So, the advice is to be in Killarney for 7.30am when Jordan will set you on your way.

If a cyclist for some reason or other is unable to complete the ROK, the sweeps will transport you and your bike back to Killarney. Fiona Carroll will be heading up the sweep operation.

The whole organisation allows up to 14 hours support but at 8pm all support systems will be stood down and any cyclist who for whatever reason has not completed the ROK will not have the benefit of backup services or traffic restrictions.

There are three official food stations along the cycle. These are located at Cahersiveen (72 kms), Kenmare (136 kms) and Killarney (finish). However, there will be plenty of facilities to stock up on water, bananas etc. along the route. There are also so many people along the Ring who provide drinks and sandwiches all out of the goodness of their hearts as their way of thanking cyclists for rais-

ing so much for charity. To all the cyclists, whether it's your first or 42nd ROK, enjoy the day and the camaraderie. Tóg go bog é. Remember it is the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, raising money and awareness for deserving causes; a cycle not a race. No yellow jersey or King of the Mountains. Enjoy and be safe.

GREAT CRAIC

I have enjoyed that ROK spin so many times, in all kinds of weather. Mostly good, but we also had wind and rain. Yes, it was an odyssey hugely enjoyable and great craic. Mind you there wasn’t too much opportunity for free-wheeling and that climb up from Waterville to Coomakista was a reminder that like life itself one meets the highs and lows. How did we face that challenge? How did Roche and Kelly manage the Category 1 climbs to the Pyrenees, Vosges Jura etc? Certainly, don’t try racing. Just drop down on the gears and tóg go bog é in a manner of speaking and there are great breaks on the trip. The first main food stop at Coláiste na Sceilge is a Godsend. Say hello to the CNS principal Maurice Fitzgerald, one of the all-time greats of Kerry’s football stars.

Coomakista provides a splendid vantage point from around the Grotto. The dropdown from there to Caherdaniel is one of my favourite views of Kerry. On your right is the broad Atlantic Ocean, surely one of the highlights of the well-marketed Wild Atlantic Way. There is Derrynane House, the home of Daniel O’Connell. What a journey he had by horse carriage to the London parliament in the 1820s. Before one gets to Castlecove on your right are the ruins of Lady Albinia Brodrick’s hospital at Ballinacoona, an amazing woman of royal stock in England who came to Ireland in 1915 and then disowned her royal riches, changed her name to Gobnait Ní Bhrua-

dair, fought in the War of Independence and in the Civil War, set up a co-op for the local farmers and lived to the age of 93, dying in 1955.

On to the famous Black Shop. Brendan Galvin is no longer alive to greet so many cyclists who marvel at his collection of monuments to local heroes. Take a breather there and on your right is a collection of famous local stars such as Olympian Eamonn Fitzgerald, who also won three All-Irelands with Kerry and of course the Iron Man of the Rás Tailteann, Mick Murphy. Them and many more. Take a breather. It’s worth it.

After a few kilometres, freewheel into Sneem, that delightful village. Say hello to Louis Moriarty, a veteran of many Rás Tailteanns, who cycled the Ring on his 80th birthday. Inspirational. He owns the Sneem Hotel.

I always found the section between Sneem and Kenmare challenging. No hills, but a dead road. Food stop in Kenmare and relish it. You will need it for that long six-mile pull-up to Molls Gap. Nearly there, just 15 miles, but don’t be fooled. It isn’t all downhill, but the views are spectacular.

Home to base in Killarney. A wonderful day on the bike and a good few bob collected for charities.

SPIN

And it all started 42 years ago when Denis Geaney and his friends met at the Grotto for their Sunday morning spin when cycling wasn’t as popular as today. More for a dare or for the craic they said they might try cycling around the Ring. They did and decided to do it for charity and over 40 years later the ROK has done so much for healthy exercise and raised over 19 million for deserving local charities.

It is a remarkable success story and volunteerism is at the heart of this marvellous fundraiser.

Healy family arrange blitz to honour Thomas’ memory

All roads will lead to Beaufort on Sunday, July 7 when the Healy family welcome clubs from all over Kerry to the Thomas Healy Memorial Football Blitz.

Talented young sportsman Thomas sadly passed away on July 7, 2021 at just 14 years of age and his family and friends will host the seven-a-side tournament in his honour, while also raising much-needed funds for the nearby St Francis Special School.

Proceedings get under way at 2pm at Beaufort GAA grounds with a fantastic day of football and entertainment in store.

Killarney golfer Tom Doherty has been selected on the Ireland team that will take part in the European Team Championships for Golfers with a Disability. Hosted by Germa-

Ireland captain Paul Kelly (Armagh) decided on the composition of the team after trials at Carton House and the completion of the ISPS Handa Irish Open for Golfers with a Disability in Roganstown.

The four-member team in full is: Ian St John (Tramore), Tom Doherty (Killarney), Cian Arthurs (Roganstown) and Dianne Conway (Shandon Park).

“I was delighted to take the phone call from the Team Captain Paul with the news that l made the team,” Tom told the Killarney Advertiser.

“We have two prep days coming up in Carton House where Golf lreland’s HQ is also located.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge in Germany where we will play different formats over three days: foursomes, greensomes and a fourball on the third day.

“It’s a great honour to represent my club and country at such a prestigious event.”

Those in attendance on the day will be treated to football, food and fun with a kids’ zone for the little ones, an auction with some great items going under the hammer, a raffle, and music from DJ Gavin O’Leary.

Kerry ladies drawn to face Meath again

Kerry will take on Meath in the All-Ireland quarter-final for the second year in a row following the draw for the knockout phase of the Ladies All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, which took place last weekend.

The match will be staged at Austin Stack Park in Tralee next Saturday, July 6 at 5.15pm.

The Kingdom won last year’s encounter at the same venue in atrocious weather conditions and they will be hoping for a repeat of that result (perhaps without the wind and rain) to keep their All-Ireland dream alive.

The other three quarters will also be played on July 6 with Cork hosting Waterford, Dublin hosting Galway and Armagh hosting Mayo.

Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR MEN: Our Senior Men rounded off their County League with a valuable win over Glenflesk at the East Kerry venue. A positive result was imperative to guarantee our top-flight status and early scores from Will Shine, David O’Sullivan, Darragh Lyne and Peter McCarthy set an early tone. The home side bounced back, and it needed an Eoghan O’Sullivan score to draw level. The defining score of the half came when Peter McCarthy pounced on a loose ball to give a 1-9 to 0-7 half time advantage. Glenflesk, shorn a few regulars, struggled to get any foothold in the second half and further points from David O’Sullivan, Cian Gammell, Rob Leen and Micheal Devlin put the seal on a 1-14 to 0-8 win. That coupled with Spas impressive win in Dingle saw the West Kerry side join An Ghaeltacht and Milltown Castlemaine in the drop. The first round of the Intermediate Championship sees a repeat of this game and both sides will be expected to be considerably stronger for that joust. A speedy recovery is wished for Billy McGuire, Will Shine, Podge O’Connor and Eoghan O’Sullivan who picked up knocks in the game. As it stands with Austin Stacks, Beaufort and Glenbeigh/Glencar all promoted to the top division, there will be eight Intermediate clubs in the top-flight. Team: Brian Kelly, Peter O’Sullivan, Podge O'Connor, Darragh Fleming, Jonathan Lyne, Danny Sheahan, Rob Leen, Billy McGuire, Cian Gammell, Micheal Devlin, Darragh Lyne, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Will Shine, David O’Sullivan, Peter McCarthy. Subs: James O’Donoghue for Will Shine, Dar-

ragh O’Doherty for Billy McGuire, Mark Heffernan for Eoghan O’Sullivan, Conor Gammell for Jonathan Lyne, Cathal Sheahan for Podge O’Connor. U14 GIRLS: Our U14 girls qualified for the County League Division 3 Final by virtue of a good win over Scartaglen in Direen during the week. From the starting whistle, the girls went out strong and demonstrated their attacking efficiency as they settled into the game nicely. Showing great teamwork and a ferocious work rate, we entered the half on a scoreline of 1-6 to 1-0 in favour of Legion. With the wind at our backs, the girls' confidence grew, and more scoring chances from long range were taken that led to victory. Thank you to the ref, John Purcell, and to Scartaglen. Later in the week they were crowned County League champions defeating Laune Rangers in a humdinger of a final in John Mitchels on Sunday evening. Playing against the wind in the first half, scores were hard to come by, but a resilient rearguard action saw then only two points in arrears at half time, 1-5 to 1-3. With the advantage of the wind for the second half, the girls upped their intensity. A quick goal to start the half, shifted the momentum while the work rate never waned. Laune Rangers though remained in the game but couldn’t find a way past the defence, who held them to only one point in the second half. The girls held out for a tremendous well-deserved victory on the final score 3-7 to 1-6.

First half goals from Mark O'Shea and Cian McMahon ensured that we took control of the game from early on. Fossa GAA

LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 23/06/2024 for a jackpot of €3,300 were 8, 10, 13, 19. There was no jackpot

winner. The €40 consolation prize winners were Anne Marie Sugrue, Online; Lorraine Friel, Online; Chloe McCarthy; Eileen Moriarty; Niamh Collins. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online via Clubforce. COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 2: The senior team completed their county league campaign with an away trip to Kenmare on Saturday evening. Fossa started brightly with scores from Harry Buckley and Emmett O’Shea before they were awarded a penalty in the 18th minute which Emmett O’Shea scored. Fossa led 1-05 to 0-03 at this stage and they looked comfortable, unfortunately they conceded two goals before half time to allow Kenmare back into the game and trailed, 1-06 to 2-06 at the break. Fintan Coffey and Emmett O’Shea scored two quick points on the resumption of play, but Kenmare had too much for them after that and closed out the game with a third goal in the 22nd minute to run out winners, 3-16 to 1-11. Overall, it has been a brilliant year for this team in their first season in Division 2, they have been well able for the step up and were not far off being in the running for promotion to Div 1. Players and management can be very proud of their progress and will look forward to the upcoming Intermediate championship. Thanks to the team sponsor, The Golden Nugget who have been very generous sponsors over the years and to the supporters who have travelled the county all year long. Team: Shane O’Sullivan, Gary Cronin, Dan O’Connell, Brian Myers, Cian Doyle, Rian Colleran, Dan O’Keeffe, Darren Ryan, Mark Donnellan, Harry Buckley (0-2), Michael O’Dwyer, Pauric Talbot, Fintan Coffey (0-2), Emmett O’Shea (17), Ted O’Gorman, Emmett Cronin, Ryan O’Leary, Sam Buckley, Cian O’Shea. CO LEAGUE DIVISION 6: Fossa B 1-10 Dr Crokes C 1-10. After 10 rounds of the Co League, Fossa senior B team, with 7 wins and 3 draws, won Div 6 of the Co League and are promoted to Div 5 for next season. Trailing at half time to Dr Crokes, 0-6 to 0-4, and conceding a further 1-2 early in the 2nd half, to go 7 points down, it was not looking good. However, a storming last 15 minutes saw us scoring 1-6 to go a point ahead going into injury time, only for Crokes to get an injury time point to draw level, the draw was enough to secure promotion. Fintan Coffey had a magnificent game scoring 1-5 from play and further points were added by Kevin McCarthy, Cian Doyle, Mark Donnellan, Ted O’Gorman and Dan O’Keeffe. Fossa B 3-11, Milltown B 0-7. Fossa B kept up their winning ways with a win over Milltown B in the last round of the Co League. A massive performance from Kevin McCarthy who scored 1-8, and further goals from Mark Dennehy and Richard Wallace paved the way for the win.

REGIONAL FÉILE 2024: Our Under 15 team made their way from a sunny Spa last Saturday morning shortly after

5.30am for the long trip to St Aidan's GAA Club in Ballyforan, Co. Roscommon. A breakfast stop in Ennis on the way up was a welcome stop. They met up with teammates in Ballyforan who had travelled via car and received their new Féile tops & shorts. They played 3 group games v Tooreen Camogie Club (Mayo), Padraig Pearses Camogie Club (Roscommon) and Drumgoon (Cavan), resulting in 2 losses & 1 win. This qualified us to play in the Shield semi-final v Markievicz of Donegal but unfortunately this resulted in a loss on a scoreline of 2-03 to 4-02. Fantastic performance by all players and we are very proud of every single one of them. Thanks to our coaches and mentors Claudia O'Donoghue, Kate Lynch and Jerry Cronin for all their hard work preparing the girls for the competition.
