Killarney to become the first town in Ireland to be single use coffee cup free
The move to reusables is estimated to remove over 1 million single use coffee cups from the town annually
The Killarney Coffee Cup Project was launched today as it announced plans to make Killarney Ireland’s first single use coffee cup free town. The decision to move to a reusable takeaway system has been taken following an agreement by 25 local independent coffee shops and 21 hotels.
It is estimated that it will remove over one million single use coffee cups from the town annually, or 18.5 tonnes of waste. The local independent coffee shops and hotels will no longer offer single use coffee cups from 31 July.
Killarney is recognised globally as Ireland’s leading tourist town with its surrounding National Park and UNESCO Biosphere as key attractions. Recent voluntary park clean-ups revealed that one of the most common forms of waste found in the Killarney National Park was single use coffee cups.
Recognising the negative impacts
this waste was having on the local environment, the local coffee shops collectively agreed that action was required. It is hoped that this new measure will have a visible impact on litter in the town and its surrounding environment.
While the new measures primarily promote the use of consumers’ own reusable cups, those that do not have a reusable cup will not be left without access to takeaway coffee. The participating coffee shops have also agreed to introduce a collective deposit system by partnering with 2GoCup.
The partnership enables customers to purchase a reusable cup for a €2 deposit which is refundable when the cup is returned at any of the participating locations in Killarney or at 350 existing locations nationwide.
The decision coincides with the introduction of the ‘Latte Levy’, an impending 20c tax on single use coffee cups. The introduction of a reusable model ensures that the price of
takeaway coffee will remain the same in the town for consumers.
Commenting on the move, Killian Treacy, owner of LUNA deli + wine, and spokesperson for the group, said: “We are delighted to be in a position to make Killarney single use coffee cup free. This was a really brave decision by our local coffee shops, but it is something that we are really excited by, particularly given we are the first town to introduce this measure. We believe other towns will soon follow suit when they see the positive impact this will have on Killarney.
“We are already seeing a lot of customers bringing their reusable coffee cups into our shops and believe Killarney is ready for this change. The decision has been taken for the collective good of the town by removing 18.5 tonnes of waste per year while also ensuring that the cost of takeaway coffee remains the same for our customers. We are really excited by this change and are proud that Killarney is leading the way with this important initiative.
“We have all benefitted from having the Killarney National Park on our doorstep.
It is a fantastic, free resource that locals access daily as well as being a major draw for tourism. We view this move as an opportunity for us to give something back by removing a significant source of litter from the National Park.”
Minister of State with responsibility for Public Procurement, eGovernment and Circular Economy, Ossian Smyth TD, said: “It’s great to see the town of Killarney taking the initiative. Killarney’s economy is tied to its beautiful natural environment and this scheme will reduce litter, save money on disposable cups for the businesses and save the public from paying the cup levy.”
Each of the participating coffee shops and hotels have agreed to sign up to the project on a 12-month basis. Customers can find out more about the project in any of the participating coffee shops or hotels or on their respective social media accounts.
The project has been supported by local partners including the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Kerry County Council, 2GoCup, Killarney Credit Union, WanderWild Festival and AIB.

| Community effort
The Killarney Coffee scheme is the work of many individuals and organisations.
Speaking at the official launch on Tuesday, Mayor Brendan Cronin said: “This is a shared vision of community goodwill of a community protecting its environment.”
| Boost for Tidy Towns
Each year the Killarney Looking good and Killarney Tidy Towns groups put forward an individual project to the judges of the annual Tidy Towns Committee. Past examples include the murals painted on various walls around the town.
The Tidy Towns judging panel award extra marks for such projects and next year, this new coffee cup scheme will be entered as the town’s flagship sustainability project.
| Yvonne Quill
The late Yvonne Quill was remembered at Tuesday’s launch. She was the driving force behind many of the town’s anti-litter projects until her sad passing last year. Scheme organisers said at the launch on Tuesday that she would be full of pride for such an initiative. “She is smiling down on us today,” said a spokesperson, “She would be delighted.”
• RELEVANT STUDIES:
A 2018 study by Recycling List Ireland found that Irish people throw out about 200 million single use coffee cups every year. That equates to an average of 22,000 cups an hour and 3,700 tonnes of waste each year, the equivalent to the weight of 148 humpback whales. This is categorised as entirely avoidable waste.
Furthermore, according to the National Litter Pollution Monitoring System, packaging litter is the second largest component of national litter pollution, recorded at 20.4%. Drink cups account for 1.7% of all litter pollution, while drink lids account for a further 1.5%.
It is estimated that 70% of Irish people own a reusable coffee cup.

“A bureaucratic hold up compromising the welfare of a vulnerable child” Daly
Sinn Féin TD for Kerry, Pa Daly, has condemned a continuing delay in providing a hoist to a Killarney based family for their daughter, Alexis O’Mahony.
Daly said:
“Alexis suffers from a pyruvate dehydrogenase, PDH, deficiency and she has a brain injury. She has cerebral palsy, quadriplegia, visual impairment, a subluxation of her hip and is at high risk of aspiration.
Alexis needs constant care from her family, including constant turning and daily washing to avoid bed sores. “This takes a tremendous physical toll on her family. Her whole medical team has said that she needs a ceiling hoist. Her family applied for one in 2020. The government policy had changed and while the structural works needed for the hoist are covered by the local authority, the equipment for the ceiling track hoist is not covered.
“I raised this issue on a number of occasions in the Dáil, in an effort to break the logjam that had developed between various government departments.
“I was assured in May of this year that a ‘Letter of Comfort’ had been provided to Kerry County Council so the installation of a hoist can be included in the Housing Adaptation grant scheme, which is administered by the Council.
“The Council also said it would prepare the administration work in advance of the regulations being signed off and that it expected the relevant regulations to be changed ‘imminently’.
“That was seven weeks ago.
“This week, I have been informed by the council that the relevant regulations have not been introduced and that the council will not be processing the grant until the new regulations are in place. This represents yet another unacceptable delay.
“As I said before in the Dail, I do not care if it is the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, or the Department of Health, the matter has not been sorted out.
“Promises were made but not fulfilled.
I spoke with Alexis's father Steven and I share his disappointment and frustration.
Alexis is now 20 kg in weight and the situation is getting increasingly worse for the family. A bureaucratic hold up compromising the welfare of a vulnerable childlike Alexis is simply not good enough.”
New Killarney councillor set for co-option next week
Martin Grady looks likely to be co-opted onto Kerry County Council on Monday
Martin is due to replace his retiring father Donal in the Killarney Municipal District. Donal attended his last municipal district meeting last week but council rules say that new members can only be co-opted during the order of business of a full meeting. The next full meeting is scheduled for Monday and the co-option is expected to be a formality.
Martin, a fireman with Killarney Fire and Rescue will be second new member of the Killarney Municipal District during its current term.
In June 2021 Kerry Independent Alliance councillor John O’Donoghue took up his seat on the council following the retirement of his uncle and former councillor Michael Gleeson on Kerry County Council. The next local election is set to take place next May and the final year will give Martin time to find his feet and prepare for the ballot.
Twenty years of visiting Spanish language school
A Spanish company that teaches English as a foreign language is celebrating 20 years visiting Killarney.
The Runwalkers, based in Valencia, has been bringing hundreds of Spanish students to Killarney for two decades.
From June to the end of August, there will be around 150 students learning English in Lissivigeen School and Killarney School of English run by Feargal Courtney and wife Nicola Bradwell.
“My brother, Rafael Soria, runs the com-
pany which celebrates its 20th anniversary going to Killarney town every summer with hundreds of students every year,” said his sister Amparo Soria.
“Now, the work they all do together I believe it's quite important to the Irish families that host students, for Spanish teens and adults that enjoy Killarney and its people and for the local economy too. “It has been a long time going to Killarney, my brother feels he's one local more and he loves to be there.”
Parents Steve and Teresa O’Mahony have found themselves in the middle of a bureaucratic mess as they strive to get vital equipment for their daughter Alexis.

New Community Recreation Area opened in Pinewood Estate
A new community recreation area, incorporating a multi-sport area, all age exercise equipment as well as seating and raised planting beds, was officially opened in the Pinewood Estate in Killarney on Friday.
The facility was funded by a LEADER grant of just over €78,000 through South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP) and approved by the LAG as well as match funding put up by the Pinewood Residents Association and a contribution through a lease on the site provided by Kerry County Council. The idea for the project came about through an earlier LEADER funded Feasibility Study undertaken for the residents by Paul O’Raw & Associates aimed at identifying the recre-
ational needs within the estate. Chairperson of SKDP Tony Donnelly, who performed the official opening said that this project is an excellent example of how communities, working with SKDP through the LEADER programme, can plan and develop new facilities in their areas that will be of benefit to all. He said that the project is a credit to the hard work and dedication of Eileen Mayes, Neil Coffey and all the other committee members of the Pinewood Residents
Association that they have succeeded in delivering this project for the area and he is sure it will be used by all the residents for many years to come.
Chairperson of the Pinewood Residents Association Neil Coffey said that they are delighted with the new facility and that it has been used extensively by the residents in the last number of weeks since it is operational. “The age profile of the Pinewood estate and their needs have changed over the years and the Residents’ Association were anxious to make use of the old basketball court to deliver a recreational facility that would support the needs of the people in the estate now and into the future” he said. Neil added that he wished to thank all

involved in the committee for their work on the project but also to thank Seán de Buitléar and the LEADER team in SKDP, Kerry County Council and Donal O’Neill as well as the LAG for their support and Cllr. Marie Moloney for her work in getting the project completed.

GAA Go criticised by Kerry TDs
Kerry TDs Brendan Griffin and Danny Healy Rae has questioned RTÉ and the GAA about the lack of free-to-air coverage of All-Ireland Champions Kerry this year.
The GAA appeared before an Oireachtas Media Committee this week.
Only one of Kerry’s six games so far in the All-Ireland Men’s Senior Football Championship have been shown on free to air channels.
The committee heard GAAGO attracts an
audience in excess of 120,000 people, with the smallest audiences coming in at between 1,000 and 1,500 subscribers.
“People are furious about it, really upset. These are people who build up the organisation over the years, driving their kids to matches, they feel they are really being short changed especially the older people,” said Griffin.
Earlier in the debate Healy-Rae said: "Kerry were short-changed this year as far as RTÉ is concerned,"
way as this is an invaluable emergency service. These vehicles and equipment have been stored in sheds in private ownership which are longer available,” she said. A council official replied: “Kerry County Council greatly values the important and significant service and
contribution made by the volunteers of Killarney Water Search and Rescue, that benefit the residents and visitors to Killarney. Kerry County Council will assist in every practicable way to help Killarney Water Search and Rescue address their concerns.”
The Kerry v Tyrone match, one of the biggest clashes of the season was only shown on GAA Go.

NPWS appeals to public to respect nature and wildlife
The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has today appealed to the public to keep their distance from vulnerable wildlife and to take great care when spending time with nature during the summer months.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service is also a partner of the Leave No Trace campaign and asks that the public familiarise themselves with the campaign’s guidance on good practices to avoid damaging vegetation, water bodies, soil and wildlife.
“We are delighted to welcome visitors to our national parks and nature reserves throughout the year. Many people don’t realise that areas such as sand dunes, lakes and woodlands are homes for wildlife that we’re working hard to
Kerry allocated €2.5m to end long-term vacancy and dereliction
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh
O’Brien TD this week announced that Co. Kerry would receive €2.5 million from a fund to end longterm vacancy and dereliction.
including those in Kerry. It will also provide more homes in urban centres where people can live close to local services, amenities and employment and, indeed, has the potential to be truly transformative.
protect and that wild animals and birds should not be upset in their natural habitat.,” said the Director General of the NPWS Niall Ó ’Donnchú.
“If you plan to visit areas of natural heritage this summer then please acquaint yourself with our advice available on good practice so you too can play your part in protecting nature. We’d also like to remind the public that anyone intending to film or photograph a protected wild animal must apply for a licence.”
New bus service to Waterville
The addition of another new bus route on the Ring of Kerry has been warmly welcomed by local Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill.
“This new service from Waterville to Killarney taking in Cahersiveen, Glenbeigh, Killorglin, Beaufort and Fossa, is a god-
send and opens new opportunities for local travel and tourism business” said the Rossbeigh-based Councillor.
“I am a big believer in increasing public transport, giving bigger choice and more opportunities for those traversing the fabulous Ring of Kerry in both directions on a Hop on Hop off basis."
The fund aims to transform locations across the country, promote vibrant communities in our urban centres and provide more homes where people can live close to local services and amenities. Announced as part of the quarterly Housing for All progress update, the funding will be available to Kerry County Council under the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF) and will act as a revolving fund meaning it can be replenished and used into the future
Minister O’Brien said:
“Today we are announcing details of a fund to specifically tackle long term vacancy and dereliction within towns and cities. This fund will help restore the urban heart of many of our communities,
“This Government has consistently said we will use every tool in our armoury to get to grips with our housing challenges and that is exactly what we are doing. Through this fund we will increase the pace at which vacant and derelict buildings are brought back into productive use as new homes for people.”
This fund complements a number of measures to tackle vacancy within Housing for All, the Government’s housing plan for Ireland which is available at www.gov. ie/housingforall. The plan’s overall objective is: ‘Everyone in the State should have access to a home to purchase or rent at an affordable price, built to a high standard and in the right place, offering a high quality of life.”
Five year waiting list for overcrowded tenants
Kerry County Council tenants in the Killarney Municipal District deemed to living in overcrowded accommodation could have to wait up to five years for an upgrade.
At a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting Cllr Maura Healy Rae asked: “Kerry County Council how many of its current tenants in the Killarney MD are in overcrowded accommodation and how long has each application for a transfer been on file?”
A council official replied: “There are currently 16 Kerry County Council tenants in the Killarney MD who have been approved for a transfer with a basis of need
as Overcrowded. The length of time these transfer applicants are on the list on the basis of need as overcrowded is on average five years.”

Killarney’s Garda calls routed to call centre in Cork
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice, Pa Daly TD, has outlined how he was contacted by a Killarney based constituent who was badly let down by the new Garda Control centre system.
Teachta Daly said:
“For many in Kerry, their local garda station is a comforting call away. It means
they are getting a sympathetic ear and someone with local knowledge. However under the new Computer Aided Dispatch II (CADII) system, calls are now routed to Cork City.
“One constituent, based in Killarney, contacted me recently to say she had witnessed a live drug deal in progress. Rightly alarmed, she rang her local station, which is a short distance away.
“She was directed to the Cork dispatch centre, whereupon the call rang out. She called again and managed to get someone in the Killarney station.
“However by the time her details were taken, the drug deal was over and those involved had fled.
“This is, plainly, not acceptable. Whilst I understand the need for reform and rationalisation of resources, the dispatch
of Gardai in what was an urgent incident did not occur, and an opportunity to intervene was missed.
“I will raise this matter with the Commissioner and the Minister for Justice, and in any new system, speed of response should be prioritised. Communities in Kerry will lose faith in this response otherwise.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Employing Young People
Many young people will be taking up summer jobs during the summer months so today Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Development Manager with South Munster Citizens Information Service looks at some useful information in relation to the employment rights of young workers.
Firstly, Deirdre, what information and supports are available for workers from Citizens Information?
We provide information, advice and advocacy across a broad range of topics and one of those is employment, including young workers. If we don’t have the answers, we will refer you to someone who does.
Who are classed as ‘young workers’?
Milltown’s Féile Lughnasadh launch
Féile Lughnasadh, Milltown’s annual celebration of culture and music, will be launched this Friday night.
The launch will take place on tonight (Friday) in Denny's Bar, Milltown, at 9pm. “We are invoking the ancient celebration of Lughnasadh to inspire our musical féile and create a fantastic weekend of trad and craic”, said organiser Owen O’Shea. “We’ve seen the world’s best in Milltown over the years, and this year will not disappoint, with another brilliant line up.” The festival kicks off on Thursday, August 3rd with a perennial Milltown favourite, the Club Amhránaíochta / Singing Club in the Plough Bar at 8:30.
On Friday, everyone is invited to join the festival parade, followed by the festival bonfire in the square and fun family activities.
The first major act, PÓLCA 4, are live on the Gig Rig at 9. The night continues with Club Lughnasadh, with craic agus ceoil in the Community Hall, with full bar and music. Local sessions will also be in full swing
in local bars.
Saturday will see guest musicians on stage from 7:30, with the festival’s main act, Frankie Gavin and Dé Danann live at 9.
Club Lughnasadh and local sessions will follow ‘til late.
Sunday starts at 12 noon with a Food and Crafts Market at The Square, and family fun including a magic show, craic with the Crafty Cailleach, all followed by “Dancing at Lughnasadh”, the open-air céilí with Uí Bhriain.
At 7.30 the Evans Family are on the Gig Rig followed by Four Winds at 9. The craic continues with local sessions and Club Lughnasadh.
“We are proud to have created a truly unique event, free and open air, bringing the best in trad to all in a family-friendly festival”, said treasurer Vincent Prendergast.
Young workers are people aged 14 to 18, who work for an employer. As they are generally in full-time education, they are protected by different employment laws than adults. This is to make sure their work does not put their health or education at risk.
The law also sets out different rules for young workers, depending on their age. Workers aged 14 and 15 are classed as ‘children’. Workers aged 16 and 17 are classed as ‘young persons’. Do employers have to receive proof of age and written permission from parents?
Before young workers can get a job, they must show a copy of their birth certificate (or other proof of their age) to the employer.
If they are under 16, they need written permission from their parent or guardian. This permission letter must be given to the employer.
Are there any restrictions on employing 14 and 15 year-olds?
Yes there are. By law, children aged 14 and 15 cannot be employed in regular full-time jobs. However, they can: Do light work during the school holidays (they must have at least 21 days off work during this time)
Take part in an approved work experience or educational programme (once the work is not harmful to their health, safety or development).
Work in film, cultural, advertising or sport (under licences issued by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment).
Outside school term time i.e. during school holidays, children aged 14 and 15 can work a maximum of 35 hours a week (or up to 40 hours if they are on approved work experience).
During school term time children aged 14 are not allowed work during school time, while children aged 15 can do 8 hours of light work a week.
Are there restrictions on employing 16 and 17 year-olds?
Young people aged 16 and 17 can work a maximum of 8 hours a day, up to 40 hours a week. If the young worker is under 18 and works for more than one employer, their combined daily or weekly hours cannot exceed the maximum number of hours allowed.
Young people aged 16 & 17 are only allowed to work between 6am and 10pm.
What are the rules in relation to rest breaks during the working day?
Children aged under 16 must have a half-hour rest break after 4 hours work and young people aged 16 & 17 must have a half hour rest break after 4.5 hours work. If you are aged under 16, you must have 14 consecutive hours off each day and 2 days off each week, while 16 & 17 year olds must have a daily break of 12 consecutive hours and 2 days off each week.
Can young people work in a licensed premises (such as a pub)?
A young people who are attending school can be employed on general duties in a licensed premises, such as a pub. It is important to note that general duties does not include selling alcohol at the bar or in an off-licence.
During school term, they can only work until 11pm on a day that is not immediately before a school day. For example, you can work until 11pm on Friday night if you are not in school on Saturday. However, you cannot work until 11pm on Sunday if you must be in school on Monday.
Employers who employ young people in a licensed premises must follow the Code of Practice concerning the Employment of Young Persons in Licensed Premises.
What is the minimum wage for young workers?
Since 1 January 2023, the national minimum wage is €11.30 per hour. However, not everyone is automatically entitled to get this. Workers under 18 are only guaranteed up to 70% of the national minimum wage, which is €7.91 per hour. Your employer can pay you more than the minimum wage if they want, but they are not required to by law.
Do these regulations apply to children or young people employed in their family business?
The working hours for young people are regulated by the Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act 1996 and it sets maximum working hours, rest breaks from work and bans late night working for young people under 18. The Act does not apply to children or young people who are employed by a close relative.

‘’Having battled with high hamstring tendonitis for 18 months, experiencing pain most days, limited physical activity and dependant on pain relief, I am now pain free after a few weeks attending Elaine and Kieran. Regular dry needling from Elaine, and massage with Kieran, has been a complete game changer in a very short time. I’m slowly returning to sport, and daily functioning is at a near normal level now. Delighted with my outcome. Highly recommend BE Pro therapy, Elaine and Kieran are top class!!’’

Thanks again Elaine and Kieran.’’
‘’I attended Kieran following a sprained ankle injury and I had previous tendon issues before that, Kieran is excellent and professional at what he does, straight away he made me feel at ease, he listened attentively and gave me the best advice he could. Cattle kept out of European Parliament emissions directive
Irish farms will not face additional red tape after the European Parliament Tuesday voted to maintain current rules and not bring livestock farms under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED).
The parliament retained the current rules under the IED – seeking to “reduce harmful industrial emissions” across the European Union – it will not extend the directive to cattle farms and will not ex-
tend it further to include more pig and poultry farms.
In a statement the European Parliament outlined that it had adopted its position to negotiate with the European Council “on new rules to reduce pollution and include large agro-industrial installations in the ecological transition”.
“With regard to livestock farms, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voted in favour of maintaining the current rules and including pig farms with
more than 2000 places for production pigs (over 30 kg) or with more than 750 places for sows. Poultry farms with more than 40,000 places for poultry, as well as farms with more than 750 normal heads,” it detailed.
The parliament rejected a proposal put forward by the European Commission last year to extend the scope of the IED to cover all farms with more than 150 livestock units.
Microsoft to cut up to 70 more jobs in Ireland
Microsoft have announced additional job losses which could result in up to 70 redundancies in Ireland. In February, the company said it would cut 120 jobs from its Irish workforce as part of a global cost-cutting plan. A further 60 redundancies were announced in March.
It is understood the final number of layoffs may be lower than 70, if workers are redeployed to other parts of the operation.
Microsoft employs around 3,500 people in Ireland across a variety of roles including operations, sales, engineering, and product development.
The tech sector has announced a series of job losses since the end of last year at firms such as Twitter, Meta, Stripe, Amazon, Intel, Google, Salesforce, PayPal, HubSpot and Dell.
NATO holds off Ukraine membership
NATO LEADERS HAVE dashed Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hopes for a clear timeline to join the alliance, saying they would offer an invite to become a member only when “conditions are met”.
At a Vilnius summit of the 31 NATO nations, secretary general Jens Stoltenberg insisted the alliance had never used “stronger language” to back Ukraine in its bitter fight to defeat the Russian invasion.
NATO leaders pledged that “Ukraine’s future is in NATO” and shortened the eventual process Kyiv would have to go through to enter the alliance.
“We will be in a position to extend an invitation to Ukraine to join the alliance when allies agree and conditions are met,” a statement said.
But the failure to go much beyond a 2008 vow on future membership appeared to be a bitter blow to Zelenskyy, who was in Vilnius to address an admiring crowd of Lithuanian supporters in a packed city square ahead of his meetings with the NATO leaders.
“It seems there is no readiness neither to invite Ukraine to NATO nor to make it a member of the alliance,” he declared on Twitter, after getting advance notice of the cautious language in the summit statement.

Ryanair departs UK Aviation Council branding it a "talk shop"
Ryanair resigns from the UK Aviation Council branded it as a “talking shop” which does not deliver benefits or reform for the sector or passengers.
Ryanair’s chief executive Michael O’Leary accused the organisation, led by Baroness Vere, of being “useless and ineffective” on a range of issues in recent months.
The council held its first meeting in February 2023, its second in April was postponed and the third took place on Tues-
day, Ryanair said.
Mr O’Leary, who said the resignation is with immediate effect, said: “If Baroness Vere wants to deliver change or improve UK aviation, then she should disband this useless council and work instead with the UK’s major airlines to deliver real and effective change, which will enable us to improve capacity and lower air fares for UK citizens and visitors.
“Instead, Baroness Vere prefers to waste her time, and ours, holding a quarterly talking shop, at which she promises action, but delivers none.”
Study shows global warming’s unexpected impact on fish size
A recent study disputes the idea that global warming will shrink water-breathing animals like fish, finding instead that warm water pollution creates larger, but younger fish due to increased growth and death rates.
A unique 24-year study on freshwater fish subjected to warm water pollution reveals alterations in growth and mortality rates, along with size modifications. As aquatic ecosystems become warmer, it is predicted that animals such as fish will grow faster at a young age but reach smaller body sizes as adults.
“Studies into the effects of warming waters on fish from large-scale, semi-controlled experiments in natural settings are rare, yet they can provide unique insights,” says lead author Max Lindmark, researcher at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences,
Department of Aquatic Resources, Lysekil, Sweden. “We used a unique study system to investigate how warm water pollution has changed the death rates, growth rates, and size of fish over many generations.” These fish, therefore, reached a size approximately 7–11% larger in the heated area at any age. Moreover, the authors say the increase in the growth rate of younger fish due to warm water was so pronounced that even if death rates were higher because of warming, and resulted in a younger overall population of fish, the average size and relative abundance of larger fish was still higher in the heated area. This trend conflicts with the prediction that global warming would shrink fish over time, especially the large and old ones. In essence, ecosystem warming instead led to younger, but larger fish in this study.
Are we better drivers with modern driver aids?
The advancement in drivers aids in recent years is only accelerating. Technology is advancing every day, making some everyday driving skills and tasks obsolete, for the better, or maybe not.
When performing certain skills and tasks, we need to ask ourselves will we be better or worse off with the aid of advancing technology. For example, a simple task of reversing our car into a parking space in most new cars today is assisted. We just follow the instructions, and in some cases the car will do the entire task for us. Today’s car is fully loaded with driver aids
from adaptive cruise control to autonomous emergency braking from blindspot warning to electronic stability control, forward collision alert, high beam assist, lane departure warning.
A simple example of driving a car without parking sensors can present a whole world of doubt.
There is no question, these aids add to a safer driving experience for all, but the question we have to ask ourselves, will all these driver aids diminish the our senses behind the wheel? Technology is there to help but the driver is ultimately responsible.

This weekend Kerry Motor Club and Ballyfinnane Community Hall Association will celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Ballyfinnane Hillclimb.
On July 15, 1903, the first-ever closedroad motorsport event in Kerry was won by Charles Rolls who later founded the Rolls Royce Motor Car Company.
The joint organisers have put together a motoring and motorsport festival with the mid-Kerry village set to be the hive of activity for two days.
The action starts on Saturday when the Kingdom Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club and the Irish Veteran Club host a road run of period (1900 to 1920s) and modern classics from Castlemaine village to their monument at the top of the original 1903 climb.
This event, while separate from the main action on Sunday, will pass through Ballyfinnane on Saturday morning from approximately 9 am to 2 pm.
The Kerry Motor Club event kicks off at 4 pm on Saturday with the safety inspections of the 50 or so racing and rally cars participating in the speed trial getting underway at Kerry Agricultural Services in the heart of the village.
Drivers and officials sign on will also
Massive traffic management plan in place for Festival of Speed
start at the same time in the Ballyfinnane Community Hall – volunteers from the association will be selling soft drinks and snacks at the hall throughout the weekend.
Later that evening a parade of competing cars, led by a lone piper and under Garda escort, will leave the community hall and proceed to a ceremonial start at the Shanty Bar.
This event, organised by locals, will get underway around 9 pm ahead of an evening of entertainment at the Shanty.
Some of the fastest cars ever seen in Kerry, including a Formula 3 racing car, several single-seater racing cars and a host of rally cars have signed up for the event.
“The support of the local people has been unwavering and without them, this event could not happen,” said clerk of the course Sean Moriarty.
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
On, Sunday, roads close at 8 am and an extensive traffic management plan will be in place for the day.
There are four access points.
CAR PARK A
Traffic approaching from the east side of Ballyfinnane should leave the N22 Tralee to Killarney Road at the Currans flyover exit.
Car parks will be signposted from this point onwards but the car park has been moved from the original one published in the programme and will now be located much closer to Ballyfinnane village. This eliminates the need for a shuttle bus at this point. No parking is allowed on the road approaching this car park, as this is the dedicated ambulance evacuation route. This road will be monitored by motorcycle marshals and tow trucks will be in operation.
CAR PARK B
Fans approaching from the Firies side will find a dedicated car park beside the Maine Bridge.
A free shuttle bus will run from this car park as the only available parking is some distance from the venue and the
approach road will be used as the official pit stop and service park
CAR PARK C
From the Castlemaine side, patrons will find a car park just to the west of Killtalagh Church. This is only accessible from the Castlemaine side and the Ballygamboom road will be limited to local and emergency access only.
There is no shuttle bus service from car park C but it is only a short walk to the paddock area and hillclimb start area near Aubee Bridge.
CAR PARK D
Fans approaching from Tralee and Farmer’s Bridge can access the event from the Quill’s Cross side of Ballyfinnane. A one-way system will operate on the Garraun road, with access to the event just north of Ballyfinnane.
The car park here is shared with the classic car show and there is also a dedicated disabled parking zone available to Blue Badge holders in the old creamery yard. Media should also access the venue from this point.

Youth club initiative by Killarney and District Motor Club
Killarney and District Motor Club have launched a new youth arm of the club.
The KDMC 2 youth programme is the idea of the club’s vice chairman Mike Shea.
He has roped in some of the club’s most experienced members like Paul Nagle, Noel O’Sullivan, Mikie Galvin and Rob Duggan to make the sport more accessible to younger members.
The competitors will host a series of informal chats and get-togethers, away from the banalities of club meetings and will share their experiences with young-
er fans.
“Let us all help our younger members and new members who just joined to enjoy all disciplines of motorsport or what ever route they choose, competing or on the organisation side of motorsport. We have an exceptional group of people ready to help the KDMC 2 youth program. Let’s have some fun doing it,” said Mike Shea.
The first event will be a navigational treasure hunt in the Faha area on July 21.
Paul Nagle’s vast experience as a World Rally Championship co-driver will be share with members of the Killarney and District Motor Club Youth Club. Photo: Red Bull Content Pool

Weathering hardships sent by the world
The trouble and the strife
It protected the smaller structures
That nestled by it’s side
Despite storms of physical depletion
Brought in by the tide
Waves of worry chipped away the surface
But the inner strength shone through A monument of pride and independence
That rock dear Helen was you
Your love is irreplaceable
Your sense of humour was unique You make us laugh, still to this day
With the remarks you used to speak
The winds of change blew fiercely And took you far away But now you live in paradise

Playing with a full deck
Kerry expected to be at full strength for tricky semi-final assignment
victory over Tyrone a fortnight ago and it would be surprising if O’Connor made any major changes to his line-up ahead of this weekend. (The team was due to be named on Thursday night, after this publication went to print.)
CONFIDENT
Ulster final and Monaghan snuck a draw against them in the All-Ireland group phase, but their results apart from that have been fairly definitive.
Reigning champions Kerry are just 70 minutes away from another All-Ireland final but we can’t get ahead of ourselves just yet. Standing in The Kingdom’s way are Derry, a tough outfit who can pose serious problems to any team.
The good news for those of a green and gold persuasion is that Jack O’Connor should have a fit and healthy squad to choose from on Sunday, barring any unforeseen injuries or ailments between now and then.
Killian Spillane of Templenoe has recovered from an ankle injury that ruled him out of the last four matches. He is expected to start on the bench. Kerry have no other injury concerns at the moment, apart from long-term absentees Stefan Okunbor, Joe O’Connor and Darragh Roche.
Kerry should come into this game in high spirits following that impressive 12-point
Derry will be confident, too. This is their second consecutive All-Ireland semi-final and they have rarely looked phased en route to the last four this time around. Armagh brought them to penalties in the
Ciarán Meenagh’s side defeated Cork by 1-12 to 1-8 in the quarter-final; a late missed penalty by star forward Shane McGuigan meant the scoreline wasn’t quite as emphatic as it might have been. Kerry and Derry have met just four times in the championship. The most recent encounter was in the 2004 All-Ireland semi-final when Kerry ran out 1-17 to 1-11 winners; Killarney’s Colm Cooper kicked six points (three from play) on the day. They also crossed paths in 1958 when Derry secured their only championship win over The Kingdom to date. Kerry prevailed in 1970 and 1976.
Kerry captain David Clifford has fond memories of playing Derry in Croke Park. He scored an incredible tally of 4-4 in the 2017 All-Ireland minor final as Kerry secured a fourth title in a row.
Current senior players Cian Gammell, Chris O’Donoghue, Pa Warren, Diarmuid O’Connor and Donal O’Sullivan also played in that match, as did current Derry seniors Conor McCluskey and Pádraig McGrogan.
LIVE
Tickets for Sunday’s semi-final were still readily available on Thursday. The match will be shown live on RTÉ with coverage starting at 3.15pm.
Kerry v Derry will be preceded by the All-Ireland junior final between the winners of New York v Warwickshire and London v Kilkenny. Those semi-finals take place tonight (Friday) in Abbotstown.
Saturday’s All-Ireland senior football semi-final between Dublin and Monaghan throws in at 5.30pm at Croke Park. The Tailteann Cup final (Meath v Down) will be the curtain raiser.

OPINION
Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues
Patience will be key against Derry’s all-out defence
Beating Tyrone was enjoyable and there are plenty of positives to take away from Kerry’s performance on the day but make no mistake, Derry are a very different prospect.
Tyrone have a reputation for bringing most of their players back when they don’t have the ball but everyone does that now, Kerry included. What distinguishes Derry from other teams is that they actually pack everybody, 1 to 15, behind the ball. They rarely leave any player forward. Their goal is to clog up the area inside the 45 and make it difficult for opponents to create scoring opportunities. This can be very frustrating, particularly for inside forwards who are eager to get some shots off. In the quarter-final, Cork found
it difficult to get their shooters into position. There were openings to shoot over the cover but Cork didn’t back themselves to take on those shots. When they got closer to goal, Derry applied the pressure and forced them into positions that weren’t optimal. In the end, they scored 1-8 and their conversion rate was just 37%.
Kerry have better forwards than Cork and they have players like David Clifford, Seánie O’Shea, Tom O’Sullivan, Paudie Clifford, Paul Geaney and Diarmuid O’Connor who can shoot from distance, so they are naturally better equipped to pick off scores than Cork are.
However, there will be times when the shot simply isn’t on and when that happens, Kerry need to be patient and make sure that the play ends
with a good look at the posts. Because when they give the ball back to Derry, it’s not easy to get it back off them. When Derry regain possession in their own third, they rarely counter attack at pace. Instead, they go backwards and sideways, allowing their forwards to get up into position. They normally defend with 15 back and attack with 15 forward. With goalkeeper Odhran Lynch joining in with the play to create a plus-one, it’s difficult to press up without leaving holes in your defence. You would expect Kerry to instruct David Clifford to stay up in the hope that they can force a turnover and create a goal chance, just as Galway did with Damien Comer in last year’s semi-final. Either way, Derry’s tactics can be frustrating for supporters as it generally leads to a slow, boring spectacle.
If this is how the game pans out it’s bound to frustrate Kerry because Kerry
prefer high-tempo, open games. They like teams running at them and kicking the ball in because it allows them to force turnovers, break at speed, and utilise their superior kicking skills.
At the same time, Kerry look like they have faith in their defensive structure and when they have that structure in place – which they will if Derry attack slowly – they will fancy themselves to keep the Ulster champions to a low score. Shane McGuigan and Ethan Doherty will need minding (possibly by Jason Foley and Paul Murphy) but other than that, Derry don’t tend to get many points from their forwards.
If Kerry can remain calm without the ball and keep another clean sheet, while also being patient when necessary at the other end, they should have enough to get over the line.

Kerry host All-Ireland champions in Tralee
Reigning champions Meath are the opposition for Kerry on Saturday night as The Kingdom look to secure a place in the last four of the Ladies All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. The match begins at 7.30pm in Austin Stack Park.
Jordan and Madie star in YouTube doc
Local track and field athletes Jordan Lee and Madie Wilson-Walker star in a new YouTube documentary that shares their inspirational story with a global audience.
In the short film, Killarney man Lee (23) and Canadian Wilson-Walker (26) tell the captivating story of how they both overcame barriers to become stars in the world of athletics.
Lee, a high jumper who was born with one hand, and Wilson-Walker, a long jumper who competes using blades, are living together in Kerry after initially meeting at the World Championships in Dubai in 2019.
“I went over to Dubai to win a medal,” Jordan tells the filmmakers, “but I came back with a girlfriend.”
The couple detail some of the difficulties they faced as children; Lee reveals that some kids labelled him a “monster”. Overall, theirs is a story of triumph over adversity, and how their relationship has blossomed alongside their sporting dreams.
The documentary, titled ‘Losing Our Limbs Saved Our Lives’, was created for the Truly YouTube channel, which has over 10 million subscribers worldwide. Since being uploaded on Saturday, the video already has almost 18,000 views. Search ‘Born Different’ to find the series. Killarney Valley AC congratulated their members on the documentary, commending them for “removing stigmas” around disabilities.
“We are honoured and inspired every day through their story.”
Celtic girls set for FAI Cup semi-final
Killarney Celtic play Salthill Devon in the FAI U17 Women's Cup semi-final at Celtic Park on Saturday. Kick-off is at 2.30pm.
After impressive victories over Riverside and Macroom in the earlier rounds, and a remarkable 5-3 comeback win over
a strong Aisling Annacotty team in the quarters, these young Celts are now on the brink of a national final.
Coaches Alan O’Sullivan, Dave McIndoe and Tanya McCormick and all the players would greatly appreciate support on the day.
Meath are on the hunt for three All-Irelands in a row but Kerry are considered slight favourites to win this hotly anticipated quarter-final, quite possibly due to home advantage.
Declan Quill and Darragh Long’s team overcame The Royal County when the sides last met in the league in February - Kerry prevailed by 1-18 to 0-9 in Brosna. Their last encounter before that was last year’s All-Ireland final which Meath won by nine points. That league win earlier this year helped Kerry to win the Division 1 title. Sub-
sequent championship victories over Cavan and Leinster champions Dublin clinched a home quarter-final. Meanwhile, Meath finished second in their group after beating Waterford and losing to Donegal.
If Kerry are to turn over the champs, they will need a massive team effort defensively and hope that key forwards Síofra O’Shea and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh can do the damage up front. The deadly duo have already scored 17 goals between them this year. O’Shea has registered 9-13 in 11 appearances while veteran Ní Mhuircheartaigh has racked up 8-62 in 13. For those who are unable to attend, Kerry v Meath will be shown live on TG4. The other quarter-finals (Galway v Mayo and Armagh v Cork on Saturday, Donegal v Dublin on Sunday) will also be live on TG4.
NEXT ROUND: The Killarney Celtic U17 girls have advanced to the semi-final stage of the National Cup.

The 'Tailteann' name
Ahead of this weekend’s Tailteann Cup final, Eamonn Fitzgerald charts the history of the Tailteann Games – including the story of a Killarney medalist from a century ago
The All-Ireland senior football semi-final between Dublin and Monaghan will be played on Saturday at 5.30pm with Kerry facing Derry on Sunday at 4pm. However, let’s not forget another important occasion in Croke Park: the Tailteann Cup final. So, what’s the big deal?
The Tailteann Cup is a major opportunity for the counties who have no hope of winning the Sam Maguire; it’s a stepping stone to join the big-hitters next season. Meath and Down will play each other in this year’s final. The modern day Tailteann Cup was first played for last year when Westmeath won. Where did they get the name ‘Tailteann’?
RICH MEANING
Most readers will be familiar with the Rás Tailteann, unfortunately reduced to the Rás in recent years. The derivation loses much of its historical significance.
‘Tailteann’ has a long and rich meaning, and I discovered a Killarney man who won a very coveted Tailteann Games medal in 1924. More about him later.
The Tailteann connection goes way back to ancient Irish mythology. Aonach Tailteann was the fair/festival of Taltiu,
where funeral games associated with the semi-legendary history of Pre-Christian Ireland took place. They were based around Teltown, a townland in County Meath between Oristown and Donaghpatrick Kells.
It was named for the Irish mythological figure or goddess, Tailtiu. Not too far away is Tara and Newgrange. So, it will be extra special if Colm O’Rourke can somehow manage to win the 2023 Tailteann Cup.
Kerry supporters will know Páirc Tailteann, HQ of Meath GAA. It is in the area of Teltown where the festival was historically known to be celebrated from medieval times up to about 1950.
HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY
The games were founded, according to the Book of Invasions, by Lugh Lámhfhada, the Ollamh Érenn (master craftsman or doctor of the sciences), as a mourning ceremony for the death of his foster-mother Tailtiu. Lugh buried Tailtiu underneath a mound in an area that took her name and was later called Tailteann in County Meath.
The event was held during the last fort-
night of July and culminated with the celebration of Lughnasadh, or Lammas Eve (August 1).
Modern folklore claims that the Tailteann Games started around 1600 BC, with some sources claiming it was as far back as 1829 BC.
It was more than just games. Marriage contracts were signed, but a Teltown marriage was regarded as an illicit marriage which could not last. The Tailtin Fair was held there in medieval times as a revival of the ancient Aonach Tailteann, and was revived as the Tailteann Games for a period in the 20th century.
TAILTEANN GAMES
The ancient Aonach had three functions: honouring the dead, proclaiming laws, and funeral games and festivities to entertain. The first function took between one and three days depending on the importance of the deceased. Guests would sing mourning chants called the Guba, after which druids would improvise Cepógs, songs in memory of the dead. The dead would then be burnt on a funeral pyre.
The second function would then be car-
ried out during a universal truce by the Ollamh Érenn, giving out laws to the people via bards and druids and culminating in the igniting of another massive fire. The custom of rejoicing after a funeral was then enshrined in the Cuiteach Fuait, games of mental and physical ability. Games included the long jump, high jump, running, hurling, spear throwing, boxing, contests in sword-fighting, archery, wrestling, swimming, and chariot and horse racing. They also included
x

competitions in strategy, singing, dancing and storytelling, along with crafts competitions for goldsmiths, jewellers, weavers and armourers.
The games also featured a mass arranged marriage, where couples met for the first time and were given up to a year and a day to divorce on the hills of separation.
ANNALS OF INNISFALLEN
Killarney’s own Annals of Inisfallen state that, "Muiredach son of Bran, king of Laigin, harried Uí Néill as far as Sliab Fuait, and the Fair of Tailtiu was held”. There is a complex of ancient earthworks dating to the Iron Age in the area of Teltown where the festival was historically known to be celebrated off and on from medieval times into the modern era. The games were known to have been held between the 6th and 9th centuries AD. The games were held until 1169-1171 AD when they died out after the Norman invasion.
In later medieval times, the games were revived and called the Tailten Fair, consisting of contests of strength and skill, horse races, religious celebrations, and a traditional time for couples to contract ‘handfasting’ trial marriages. ‘Taillten marriages’ were legal up until the 13th century.
GAA
The GAA's 1888 championships of football and of hurling were unfinished owing to the American Invasion Tour, an unsuccessful attempt to raise funds for a revival.
The Second Dáil approved a scheme in 1922, and after a delay caused by the Irish Civil War, the first was held in 1924. Open to foreigners of Irish heritage, the first games of 1924 and 1928 attracted some competitors fresh from the Olympics in Paris and Amsterdam.
The revived Tailteann Games were often referred to as the Irish Olympics. The levels competition was extremely high and I know that Éamonn Mac Gearailt, the Olympian (Los Angeles 1932), was one of the real stars in the early years of the revived Tailteann games. He was also a member of the great first four-in-a-row Kerry team.
The Games' main backer, Minister JJ Walsh, lost office when Fianna Fáil and Dev took power after the 1932 election, and public funding was cut. The 1932 games continued on a smaller scale against a background of the Great Depression and the Anglo-Irish Trade War, and then were allowed to die.
Jack Fitzsimons suggested reviving the Tailteann Games in a 1985 Seanad Éireann debate on tourism in Ireland.
The Rás Tailteann cycling race was founded in 1953 by the National Cycling Association (NCA), in opposition to the Tour of Ireland organised by the rival Cumann Rothaíochta na hÉireann (CRÉ). Cycling Ireland, the merged successor to both the NCA and CRÉ, still organises the Rás Tailteann annually, but it is usually known as "the [sponsor] Rás", or simply "the Rás".
Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan, the famous trainer of eight All-Ireland-winning Kerry teams, founded the Munster Colleges Athletics and that spawned more development.
The Irish Secondary Schools Athletic Association organised annual national championships from 1963 under the name ‘Junior Tailteann Games’. Athletics Ireland continues to use the name "Tailteann Games" for its annual schools inter-provincial championships. Also, independently, the Tailteann games are an inter-Gaeltacht event that includes other activities.
CONNO
The only local person I have been able to locate with a Tailteann Games medal was Con Healy, better known as Conno, the solicitor whose office was close to where the Dungeon shop is on College Street. He was a great friend of Dick Fitzgerald who lived on the same street.
Conno won the football medal in the 1924 Tailteann Games at Croke Park. Inscribed on the medal is ‘Football Con Healy,’ and around the rim is ‘Aonach Tailteann 1924, Baile Átha Cliath’, shown in the old Irish script and séimhiú. I suspect that Conno was a law student in Dublin at that time. I wonder if any readers of the Killarney Advertiser have a record of any more Killarney people who won Tailteann Games medals in the late 1920s?
CROKES WIN COUNTY LEAGUE
The 11th round of the Kerry County League was played on Sunday last with all games fixed for 2pm. No dead rubbers in this series with wins, promotion, relegation and survival throwing up all kinds of mathematical puzzles.
I gave reporter Murt Murphy the single word ‘brinkmanship’ at Milltown where Dr Crokes and Milltown/Castlemaine played out a draw. That suited both, but there was no pre-match deal as it took a last-minute point by Billy Courtney to earn Crokes a point (0-12 to 1-9). They led by two before the locals scored a penalty. Dr Crokes were crowned 2023 Division 1 champions just one point ahead of Legion, who beat beat Kerins O’Rahillys away.
Stacks beat Gneeveguilla away and now there will be a big clash between the two Tralee town sides in a relegation playoff. Whoever loses will drop to Division 2 next year.
Spa, Kilcummin and Rathmore retain Division 1 status, but Gneenvegiilla are going down along with Desmonds and the losers of the Tralee duel. Shades of last year’s county final…
HISTORY: The first modern Tailteann Games were held at Croke Park in Dublin on August 2, 1924.

Killarney Legion GAA
SENIOR MEN: The County League Division 1 campaign culminated with a win over a Kerins O’Rahillys side who them-
selves were desperate for the points to avoid getting lured into a relegation position. The upshot of the win is O’Rahillys now face town rivals Austin Stacks in a relegation play off. Victory was not enough to deny Dr Crokes the league honours, their draw over Milltown/ Castlemaine sealed the deal, but the manner of the performance was certainly an improvement on recent displays. A tight first half saw Strand Road go in with a two-point lead but a Peter McCarthy goal with ten minutes to go put us on the way to a 1-14 to 1-13 win. Team: Brian Kelly, Rob Leen, Danny Sheahan, Podge O’Connor (0-1), Darragh Fleming, Darragh O’Doherty, Kieran O’Donoghue (0-1), Padraig Lucey, Jamie Alade (0-1), Eoghan O’Sullivan (01), Jonathan Lyne (0-1), Finbarr Murphy (0-3), Will Shine (0-3), Jamie O’Sullivan (0-1), Peter McCarthy (1-2). Subs Billy McGuire, Shaun Keane.
CLUB AWARDS NIGHT: All roads lead to the magnificent Killarney Brewery this Friday night, July 14th, when we host our Annual Awards Night. An appeal is made to all members to come out and honour our recipients and enjoy a sociable and relaxing evening in the newly opened Brewery. Throw in is at 8pm.
SENIOR LADIES: Our Senior Ladies concluded their Club League programme with a full merited and hard-fought win over Clounmacon / Moyvane in Direen on Monday July 3rd. A strong first half showing, which yielded 1-10, sowed the seeds for the win and although the visitors battled hard in the second half, two well timed goals sealed the deal for the Legion ladies. The game was a send-off for Tara Murphy who is exploring Europe for the coming months. Safe travels Tara. Full time score Killarney Legion 3-12 Clounmacon/ Moyvane 4-3.
LADIES FOOTBALL UPDATE: Our U12 Girls teams had a successful week with both recording wins. The Green team hosted the always competitive MKL Gaels in Direen where a strong second half showing carried the points. The White team were in a blustery Reenard, and a late late show earned them the win. A great battle considering they played against the elements in the second period. There should be a good bounce in training after those efforts.
Spa GAA
FIXTURES: The 2023 Credit Union Senior Football League came to a close at the weekend. After an eventful competition with some disappointing results along the way we came over the last hurdle strong when we faced Ballymacelligott at home in Round 11. It did not come easy as both sides gave it their all, but it was the determination and drive from Spa that allowed us to end the game with a 2-point lead with a final score Spa 1-14 Ballymacelligott 1-12. Overall, we ended the 2023 competition on 11 points securing our position in Division 1 for another year. The next competition for this team is the Ker-
ry Petroleum Senior Club Championship which will start in August. In their group they will face Kenmare, Na Gaeil and Templenoe. Fixture dates and times TBC
BEST WISHES: We want to wish the Kerry ladies the best of luck when they face last year's All-Ireland champions Meath in the TG4 All Ireland Senior Championship Quarter Final this Saturday 15th July in Austin Stack Park at 7:30pm. Dr Crokes GAA
SFL DIV 1: Dr. Crokes 0-12 Milltown/Castlemaine 1-09. In a game where two sides couldn’t be separated, we were crowned Kerry Senior Football League champions. It was the home side who started the livelier, kicking the first 3 points of the game from play. It took until the 7th minute for Liam Randles to open our scoring and we proceeded to kick the following two points. Much of the first half was point for point with the game moving from end to end. We were happy to go in leading 0-06 to 0-05 at halftime. The second half was the exact same as the first with each side clocking up point after point. Successive points from Daithí Casey, Mikey Casey and Kieran O’Leary gave us a 2-point lead with only 5 minutes left to go. Milltown’s Sean Hogan was fouled inside the small square and the referee signed to the penalty spot. Bryan O’Shea was unlucky not to clear the ball having got a touch of the ball however, Eanna O’Connor converted this giving the home side a 1-point lead going into the dying
minutes of the game. Billy Courtney kicked a fantastic long-range point and the game’s final score, finishing the game level pegging and a point for both sides. Well done to all 44 played who played with the Div. 1 team this season, as well as the management and backroom team.
LGFA: Senior Club League Dr. Crokes 3:12 Rathmore 3:07. Our senior ladies travelled to Rathbeg on Monday evening. Our girls started slowly, and with Rathmore performing well, they held a 6-point lead at half time. A hugely impressive second half performance turned the game completely around and our ladies finished comfortably with a 5-point victory. U15B: Crokes 1-08 Listry 1-06. Our U15 team had a great victory away in Listry. It was a hard-fought victory and both teams battled to the very end.
LGFA U14: Dr. Crokes 3:08 Laune Rangers 2:06.
Fossa GAA
CREDIT UNION COUNTY LEAGUE: Fossa 2-12 Churchill 0-17. In a game where both teams needed to win, to keep their hopes alive for promotion to Division 2 of the men’s Senior County League, spectators were treated to a cracker. Churchill dominated the first quarter and raced into a 5-point lead, Fossa battled hard to stay in the game – and a long ball in from Harry Buckley to Fintan Coffey, broke in the square, and was finished to the net by Fintan to bring Fossa back in the game, two points from play from Tadgh O’Shea and a solo effort by Rian Colleran gave a halt time score line of Fossa 1-03 Churchill 0-10. The Churchill lead swayed, but they maintained a 4-point lead as the clock ticked to the 60-minute mark, despite a brace of points by Matt Rennie and the free scoring of Tadgh O’Shea, then the drama unfolded. Fossa goalkeeper, Colin Myers was left with no choice but to pull down the Churchill player as he headed for goal, black card for Colin and from the resultant free, Churchill restored their 4-point lead. Sam Buckley took over goalkeeping duties and from his kick out, Ruairi Doyle picked up the break, Fossa got a free, scored it, to bring the Churchill lead back to 3, Churchill won possession from their own kickout and attacked but kicked the ball wide. Another fine kickout from Sam Buckley, was magnificently fielded by Matt Rennie, long ball into the square, won by Fintan Coffey, foul, a penalty to Fossa. the spot kick was neatly tucked away by Tadgh O’Shea. The score was now tied but there was still time on the ref’s watch and from the Churchill kick out, the ball was intercepted by Darren Cronin – quick pass to Fintan Coffey and over the bar by the warrior and man of the match - Fintan Coffey. There was still time for one last Churchill attack, but Fossa defended well and hung on to win by the minimum. This was a massive performance from a Fossa team down a huge number of players, a special mention to the dad’s army of the team!! Mark

Glenflesk GAA
JERRY O’LEARY RECOVERY FUNDRAISER: Hi, my name is Kate O’Leary Crowley (sister of Jerry) and along with brother Teddy O’Leary, sisters Hannah O’Connell, Sheila Buckley and his mum Bridie and families, we would greatly appreciate your support in raising funds to help Jerry, his wife Bina, sons Gearoid and Mikey on Jerry’s journey to recovery. Obviously, Jerry's income is now hugely affected & ongoing medical expenses, rehabilitation & all adjustments needed to support him will prove very difficult financially. On the 12th June 2023 Jerry unfortunately had a fall which caused catastrophic injuries. He was taken to Kerry General Hospital and from there airlifted to the Mater hospital in Dublin where he underwent major surgery. He was critical & spent 2 weeks in ICU attached to a large ventilator and having one to one 24-hour nursing care etc. Jerry is at present in the Spinal Unit and is still being assisted by a ventilator. Jerry is now communicating with help of a voice box and getting very intense work done by medical team of physio, Speech and language, O.T., Orthopaedic, dietician, psychologist etc. & on a broad range of medication to help with very debilitating pain etc. Jerry is going to be in the Spinal Unit for the foreseeable future while still receiving one to one care until he can eventually be weaned off the ventilator and adjusts to food/fluids consumption going forward. The care he is receiving is mind blowing and all the medical team including the amazing nurses are just second to none. The plan is that hopefully he will be transferred to The National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire to help him make adjustments to his future daily life going forward. Also over a week ago his local community in Barraduff and Glenflesk along with huge numbers from afar came together with Fr Jim Linehan & Fr. Gérard O' Leary and had a beautiful healing Mass followed by a 24hr vigil for Jerry and family. The support, concern & love of Jerry shown by hundreds was amazing & so comforting to know how highly regarded Jerry is held. So on behalf of us all we would greatly appreciate any help at all ye can give to support our brother, his wife & children through this very difficult time. May God Bless ye all!
Kilcummin GAA
CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE DIV 1: Kilcummin 0-13 Rathmore 1-10. Well done to our senior team who secured their Division 1 status for next year after a share of the spoils against Rathmore on Sunday last. Focus now turns to Co. Intermediate
Championship which commences in August with a fixture against Laune Rangers.
CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE DIVISION
6: Credit Union Co League Division 6 Kilcummin 0-10 Milltown / Castlemaine 0-9. This was a very entertaining game played on Friday evening in Kilcummin as both teams displayed some great football and scores and it took a very late Damien O’Leary point to separate the teams. Well done to this team and mentors who are positioned around mid-table with two games left.
FÉILE: Congratulations to the Kilcummin U15 Boys who were crowned Féile Regional Cup Champions for 2023 at Tramore GAA, Waterford on Saturday 1st July. Kilcummin qualified for the Regional Finals after they won the County Title on Saturday 6th May at John Mitchels GAA with victories over Skellig Rangers, Beaufort and defeated Ardfert in the County Féile Final. At the Regional Finals in Tramore, Kilcummin had three group games against St. Kevins from Cork (004 to 0-03), local side Tramore (0-08 to 2-01) & Limerick representatives Kilmallock (5-01 to 2-02). Kilcummin flew the Kerry flag with great pride and with tremendous travelling support, won all their three group games to advance to the Féile Regional Cup Semi-Final. Kilcummin’s opponents in the Semi-Final were another local side, Roanmore from Waterford. Despite the breezy conditions, the Kerry side played very well with excellent passing and score taking to progress to the Cup Final, 2-04 to 1-01 the final score. The Féile Cup Final saw the two undefeated sides in the competition, Kilcummin & Shelmailers from Wexford, face each other in a classic final. Kilcummin once again played some outstanding football in a thrilling encounter to take victory on a scoreline of 1-05 to 0-05, as they were deservedly crowned Féile Re-
gional Cup Champions for 2023.
