Family of tragic Thomas Healy thank community for support

The family of a boy killed in a car crash three years ago have thanked their local community for supporting a football tournament in his honour last week, Thomas Healy, who was only 14 years old, died in a tragic car accident on Ross Road on July 7, 2021. Last weekend, and close to what would have been Thomas’ 18th birthday, his family organised a memorial football tournament at their local GAA pitch in Beaufort.

MEMORIAL

His parents Julie and Ger and his brothers first had the idea of a football tournament in the winter and the idea gathered pace early in 2024.

The Thomas Healy Memorial Football Blitz finally came to fruition last weekend. “What began as a glimmer of an idea way back during the winter months of November and December culminated at the final whistle on Sunday evening last in the beautifully manicured grounds and newly painted surrounds of Thomas’ beloved Beaufort GAA Club on what was his third anniversary,” said a family statement. “We, the Healy family, would like to sincerely thank each and every person who helped us to realise the dream of honouring our lovely son Thomas.

“It would be very difficult to thank every person individually, but over time, we hope we will be able to do so. We offer our thanks to all of you out there in the Community; you all know who you are - you might think your input was very little, but to us, every person’s contribution was meaningful and had a huge

bearing on what became one of the most successful events to be held in Beaufort Parish.”

CROWDS

The event was so popular and attracted such a crowd that one local described it as a “Beaufort Puck Fair”.

The weather held off too and the family were sure Thomas was looking down on them on the day.

“Our angel in the sky held the umbrella over the GAA grounds from start to finish. While it rained in the surrounding parishes of Killarney, Killorglin, Ballyhar and the Gap of Dunloe, and dark clouds threatened to spill over Beaufort, Thomas didn’t waver with his umbrella until we were on the final round-up of putting the grounds back to their pristine condition, and boy, did he douse us – but we didn’t mind getting saturated at that point,” added the family.

“To say that the Thomas Healy Memorial Football Blitz was a success is an understatement. It was phenomenal and ultimately, the real winners are us, the Healy Family.

“Over the past three years, we have experienced the support of the whole community, and this has been reinforced for the past few months and especially on

Sunday last as we witnessed their outpouring of support. It’s a testament to the esteem in which Thomas’ memory is held.

“I know we are biased, he was our gorgeous son and brother, but his name will live long into the future for many reasons, and one of those will be for the bringing together of a whole community where everybody pulled their weight, whether it was doing printing last minute, organising car parking, stewarding, or serving teas and home baking, there wasn’t a house in the Parish who didn’t contribute to the food-laden tables.”

The organisation of the event was a community affair.

“I really don’t think there was a family or friend who hadn’t an input in the day, whether it was the local businesses in the community who made their businesses mobile on Sunday and took them to Beaufort’s Pairc Ui Choclain,” added the family.

"We hope everyone who managed to get to Beaufort enjoyed the day, and we applaud the 12 teams and their management who turned up to take part. Most of these young men would have played with and against Thomas and it was a fitting tribute to Thomas that the Final consisted of his Football teammates from Beaufort proudly wearing their beloved Blue and Yellow, pitted against his soccer teammates, who lined out to play GAA for the day, in Thomas’ beloved Blue of Killarney Athletic. This brought back fond memories of hours and hours spent on

the sidelines of soccer and GAA pitches throughout Kerry and beyond.”

FUNDRAISER

As well as being a memorial to Thomas, the event raised vital funds for St. Francis Special School.

“St. Francis Special School would like to thank the Healy family, their friends and the Beaufort GAA Community. We are absolutely privileged and grateful to be the beneficiary of the full proceeds from the Grand Prize Draw which took place on Sunday following two months of ticket selling by the Healy family and friends,” said Keith Bradley, principal of St. Francis Special School.

“The Thomas Healy Memorial Football Blitz was a wonderful day, and the Event was a testament to the incredible community that Beaufort is and the high regard the Healy family is held in. The school prides itself on the importance of community spirit and being there for friends and families when needed, and those same values were clear to see on the day. Congratulations to everyone involved in creating such a fantastic event and a wonderful celebration of Thomas’ life.”

Chamber’s Bridget O’Keeffe to pursue other interests

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has paid tribute to the organisation’s senior executive, Bridget O’Keeffe, who is to leave the position to pursue other interests.

The Newmarket, Co Cork native, who previously held a key role with financial services giant Fexco, joined Chamber in February 2023 and she assumed responsibility for the day-to-day running of the organisation.

Bridget spearheaded a major restructuring of the Chamber with several new steering committees established to oversee issues such as advocacy, retail, sustainability, events, brand communication and membership.

During her term, she also helped to increase membership quite significantly. She greatly strengthened relationships with other stakeholders involved in the promotion of Killarney, thus ensuring a coherent approach to the reputational management of the town.

Bridget’s main priority was to ensure the Chamber’s new governance and development plan was successfully implemented and to ensure a collective and unified voice was heard in the promotion of the Killarney brand throughout the world.

She also developed a top-class new website for the Chamber and she was the liaison between the business organisation and other promotional stakeholders such as Kerry County Council, Fáilte Ireland, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation.

More recently, Bridget led the Chamber team in the organisation and running of the hugely successful Celebration of Irish-American Friendship, working closely on that project with her colleagues Katy Jacobi and Maureen Hegarty and the Chamber executive.

Chamber Co-Presidents Pádraig Treacy and Johnny McGuire thanked Bridget for her tremendous contribution over the past 18 months and for helping to

successfully reshape, grow and enhance the organisation.

“We are enormously grateful to Bridget for all she has done. We worked really well together and she had a fantastic relationship with Chamber members who hold her in very high regard,” they said. Chamber expressed delight that Bridget will remain on as a valued member of the Christmas in Killarney festival committee and as a volunteer for the many events that take place throughout the year, including the Tidy Towns and Killarney Looking Good campaign.

Bridget said she has thoroughly enjoyed working closely with the co-presidents, the executive, the staff, the many steering groups and, of course, the fantastic volunteers.

“Killarney Chamber is in great standing across a wide range of areas and it plays a pivotal role in supporting local businesses to make Killarney a wonderful place to live and work,” she said.

Killarney centre stage for Pride Festival

The award-winning Kingdom Pride in Kerry festival is back next week and Killarney will take centre stage.

Kingdom Pride will be celebrated in towns all across the county from July 17 to 21.

The organisation’s flagship Party in the Park event will be held again in Killarney House and Gardens, following the Pride march in the town centre on July 20.

This year, in solidarity with the people of Palestine, Kingdom Pride in Kerry is inviting the people of Kerry to come to show their unity by bringing Palestinian flags and kites to the march, and to the Party in the Park.

“Pride is a protest for human rights all over the world. Here in the Kingdom, we have been so lucky to receive tremendous community support from our allies and supporters, and we see the struggle for liberation of all peoples as a united cause,” said Daniel Quirke, chairperson of the organising committee.

“Our events have always welcomed

everyone, regardless of gender, orientation, religion, or nationality. We truly believe that together we can create positive change through caring for and loving one another. This year is no exception, and we look forward to helping to highlight the Palestinian cause, and to bringing people together to keep generating positive change for all people."

Events will take place in Cahersiveen, Listowel, Killorglin, Tralee and Dingle, and include an Irish comedy night with Áine Gallagher, an Irish-language movie screening, yoga, sea swimming, poetry and storytelling, bowling, pitch and putt, a lively drag night at the INEC, and plenty more for people of all ages.

“We do our best to keep tickets as lowcost as possible, and we have lots of events that are totally free to attend. It is important to us that people can share Pride with us, regardless of income. Especially with the rise of the cost of living putting a strain on people’s pockets,” added the chairperson.

Ardshanvooley author’s dark comedy makes TV premiere

A novel by a Killarney born author has been adapted into a series by Apple TV+ and was seen by millions worldwide this week.

Colin O'Sullivan was born in Killarney in 1974 and is now based in Tokyo, Japan where he works as a teacher.

His latest book, ‘The Dark Manual’, the third one in his portfolio, is a dark comedy that tells the story of a robot that befriends an Irish widow. Their unlikely friendship unravels the truth behind her husband’s death.

On Wednesday this week, (July 10) Apple TV released the first two episodes of ‘Sunny’, the adaptation of ‘The Dark Manual'.

The first episodes, starring Rashida Jones and Hidetoshi Nishijima (Japan’s most cherished actor), were screened to a huge worldwide TV audience.

American actress Jones is best known for roles in TV series like ‘The Office’. “I was very pleasantly surprised by the

success of the adaptation to screen. Initial reviews have been very positive, and everyone is very excited about it. Already there are talks of a Season Two but there are no concrete plans until September,” said Colin.

Colin’s parents, Pa and Betty O’Sullivan, ran the very successful Safe Hands Dry Cleaners in Killarney up to their retirement. His first novel, 'Killarney Blues' (2013), won the Prix Mystère, a prestigious crime fiction award in France. He also wrote 'The Starved Lover Sings' (2017).

'Dark Manual' was published in 2018. The new series will be a 10-episode half-hour dark comedy drama and was created by Katie Robbins and directed by Lucy Tcherniak, with Jones serving as executive producer.

Time to hold social media to account

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae TD has attacked social media companies for their failure to prevent the wholesale spreading of false information about various individuals.

The Kerry deputy pleaded with the Taoiseach Simon Harris during his speaker's time to ensure that the high bar to which print and broadcast media are held accountable is equally placed on Social Media companies.

“I want us to get back to telling the truth and being fair in our comments,” the Kerry TD said after he highlighted one such recent incident in which his late mother’s photograph was used in a distasteful way.

“They can say whatever the hell they like about me because it won’t worry me. It won’t take one minute out of my headspace. It won’t bother me.

“I don’t like it when they attack my family because they are my family. When they attack my friends, I don’t like that. But I am going to say this. My late mother died in 2015 and she was a highly respectable woman. She could speak seven languages. She never said anything bad about any human being. She supported all of us in every way she possibly could. And she was a nice lady.”

“When I saw one night her name being used in a derogatory way and in a political way, that pushed it over the line for me.”

“Why is it acceptable in the Ireland of today that people can go on social media platforms, and they can say whatever they like, about whoever they like? It can be members of An Garda Síochána, it can

A Kerry mystery: The curious

The urgent need for repair works to a South Kerry pier has uncovered a shroud of mystery over its ownership.

Kilkeveragh Pier, Portmagee is regularly used for aquatic activities such as swimming, rowing and fishing, but over many years, damage has been done through erosion and general wear and tear.

Residents have brought the issue to the notice of Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill, who says he is intrigued by the history of Kilkeveragh Pier.

“Apparently, this pier was built away back by Trinity College Dublin, which makes one wonder at the reasons and connections for it. It appears that Trinity College Dublin was a landlord in the region at that time and surely records must exist, showing to whom their property was disposed of or if any of it

be politicians.”

“They can say outrageous things, they can say hurtful things, they can attack people’s families, they can attack individuals,” Deputy Michael Healy-Rae TD said. Deputy Michael Healy Rae is now challenging the Taoiseach to tackle the behaviour of misuse of social media and the failure of social media companies to act and will pledge his full support.

He added: “Just because you’re a minister, just because you are the leader of a party, it does not mean you have to have lies accepted about you and that people can say horrible things about people they really don’t even know.”

case of Kilkeveragh

Pier

remains in their name,” said Councillor Cahill.

“But, the nub of our modern-day problem is, that Kilkeveragh Pier is not registered as being owned by Kerry County Council or any other organisation or by any of the neighbouring landowners.

Repair or refurbishment works are required there urgently and ascertaining

title to the pier could point us in the right direction as to how we should approach the task,” he added.

“Kilkeveragh Pier is obviously of historic significance and is a living outdoor facility for those who enjoy water activities, residents and visitors alike. The local Rowing Club built a boathouse there in 1965, which is still in use. Every effort

must now be made to save it and I will submit a Motion to the next meeting of Kerry County Council to seek a solution.” said Councillor Cahill.

“There is some research to be carried out yet to discover the story behind Kilkeveragh Pier, Portmagee and we must find a path to source funding for its repair.”

Memorial Golf outing for Killarney's 'Mr Hurling’

St Pats East Kerry Pat Delaney Memorial Golf outing was held at the Ross Golf Club on Saturday.

Very changeable weather alternating between warm sunny spells and heavy cold showers made conditions difficult for players.

Nevertheless, twenty teams of three player took part in the scramble over ten holes and returned very respectable scores.

The annual event is sponsored by Killarney Credit Union and promoted by St Pats East Kerry to commemorate Pat Delaney’s 40-year contribution to hurling in Kerry and also for his commitment to Killarney Credit Union which he served as a much-admired chairman. Pat O’Brien, vice-president of St Pats thanked the golfers, noting that very many return each year to support the smallest GAA club in Kerry. He

also thanked the many sponsors who contributed funds in support, in particular Killarney Credit Union and Home Instead. John Long, representing the Credit Union, welcomed the Delaney family and reminisced about Pat’s leadership of Killarney Credit Union before presenting the winners with their prizes.

Kerry Airport is the solution to severe overcrowding at Dublin Airport

As Dublin Airport officials continue to object to the passenger cap there could be an opportunity for Kerry Airport.

It is not just passenger numbers that are an issue. Why is Dublin Airport looking to add to an already overcrowded airport –which is in breach of its current planning permission too?

Car parking is now almost impossible in Dublin.

The average Kerry motorist passes close to Kerry Airport – and depending on the

route chosen, Cork and Shannon too, to the overcrowded airport.

Dublin Airport is limited to 32 million passengers a year, but officials want to increase this figure. Its madness!

All these issues should be enough to steer extra passengers away from Dublin and into the regional airports across the country.

Cork Airport has it sussed.

A recent press conference on Cork Airport’s economic impact announced a new scheme which will incentivise air-

lines to bring new routes to the Rebel County should they be unable to secure space in Dublin.

Daa chief executive Kenny Jacobs said: “There is no restriction in Cork Airport so if ten airlines tell us they wanted to move aircraft to Cork because of this incentive when they can’t get into Dublin, well then happy days.

sory construction playtime, STEM Toys playtime and Irish myths and legends themed arts and crafts.

“Allowing time to play for children at every age is crucial for their development. When children have the time and space to play without restriction, their imaginations can soar. Children are happiest and at their most vital and energetic when they play,” said Healthy Kerry Co-ordinator, Deirdre Hegarty.

The programme was launched this week by the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald.

The CEO of Kerry Airport John Mulhern has followed suit. Speaking on Radio Kerry this week he said: “Kerry Airport is capable of servicing additional passengers, aircraft and crew; adding there are no caps in Kerry, only the tweed kind," and that he has “invited more airlines to fly through Farranfore, to ease pressures on passenger numbers in Dublin.”

These noble ideas by Kerry and Cork Airports need political and industry support.

Local ladies cycle for Kidney Association

Four local ladies completed last Saturday’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle to support the Irish Kidney Association.

The four ladies - Edel Lehane from Gneeveguilla, Sinead Kelleher, Karina Kelleher and Karina’s daughter Eve Moynihan, from Rathmore, cycled the 170km to raise funds for the Irish Kidney Association as their families were impacted by kidney disease.

John Paul Lehane received a kidney donated by his brother in 2018 and the four cyclists were grateful to the family of the deceased donor for the kidney transplant Donal Kelleher underwent in June last year.

“We are delighted, it’s been a great day. The four of us stuck together as a team and friends all the way. We supported

each other up and down the hills, and on the hardest climbs what kept us going was thinking of how much tougher it is for all those people in organ failure and their families, so we pushed through,” said Edel Lehane after the four crossed the finish line together.

“The Irish Kidney Association has been very good to our family and have always supported us so it’s nice to be able to do this for the charity to help other families of patients like my husband John Paul and Donal also.”

Killarney women chasing All-Ireland camogie success

Two Killarney women will play for Kerry in Saturday’s Intermediate Camogie All-Ireland quarter-final.

The early anticipated tie, against Galway, is scheduled for Semple Stadium, Thurles at 4 pm.

Killarney Camogie club coach Kate Lynch (pictured)and junior club player Áine Devlin are both members of the Kerry Intermediate.

This is Kerry’s first appearance in an Intermediate All Ireland quarter-final and comes after an impressive campaign in the group stages, where they finished second.

Galway will be tough opposition, but this team is well used to defying the odds and revel in being the underdogs. Galway’s intermediates aim to become the county’s third team to reach an All-Ireland camogie semi-final this year. It’s the counties' first meeting since 2022 when the Tribeswomen were 2-17 to 0-6 victors on their way to All-Ireland success but the Kingdom did win Division 2A of the league in 2023 and played in the top flight this spring.

Muckross Rowing Club members on Irish teams for two major regattas

Six members of Muckross Rowing Club will compete for Ireland in two upcoming international events.

Rowing Ireland this week announced the Irish squads for the Coupe de la Jeunesse Regatta.

Daniel Fleming and Ian Coffey have both been selected for the Under 19 Irish squad to race at the Coupe de la Jeunesse Regatta for European junior rowers. The Coupe de la Jeunesse Regatta, involving 16 European countries, will be held over from over three days, August 9-11 in Racice, Czechia.

Four Under 23 university rowers from the Muckross club have also been selected as part of the Senior Irish squad for the Home International Regatta this month. Niamh Coffey (University of Limerick), Patrick Buckley (University of Limerick), Finn O’Sullivan (University of Limerick) and Ethan O’Neill (University College Cork Rowing Club) will take on the ‘Triple Crown’ event of rowing, competing for Ireland against crews from England, Scotland and Wales.

The Home International Regatta will be held on Saturday, July 27 in Strathclyde, Scotland.

All six Muckross rowers have earned their green jerseys following a lengthy and testing trial series on land and water which began in Autumn 2023 and culminated in final water trials at the end of June.

“Muckross Rowing Club sends its best wishes to the very talented Muckross oarsmen and women and all their crewmates as they fly the flag for Ireland this summer. The talented group build on a successful record in the sport,” said club

PRO Tim O’Shea.

Niamh Coffey is a multiple Irish and University Championship winner and has previously represented Ireland in the Under 23 European Championships.

In 2022, O'Neill rowed at Junior level at the Home International event and won a gold medal as part of the Irish quadruple scull crew in the 500m sprint event.

Both Buckley and O’Sullivan continue to compete at the highest level nationally with the University of Limerick Rowing Club, and join the Irish squad for the first time this year.

The international selections come at an exciting time before the Olympic Regatta in Paris, where Zoe Hyde (Tralee Rowing Club) will be among the largest Irish rowing contingent of 16 rowers to contest an Olympic Games.

Killorglin native Zoe has previously rowed for both Killorglin and Muckross rowing clubs and will race the Women’s Double event for Ireland with Alison Bergin (Fermoy Rowing Club) in Paris.

Famous surgeon to give a talk on his Gazza experiences

Kerry Healthcare Workers for Palestine is hosting a medical education evening to highlight the current crisis in the state.

The group is led by Killarney-based Women's Health Specialist Dr Brenda Moran. Kerry Healthcare Workers for Palestine is a voluntary group that advocates for peace and a lasting ceasefire in Gaza which is currently undergoing the most horrific bombardment in living memory. They hold monthly vigils outside University Hospital Kerry with other Healthcare Workers.

On Thursday, July 18, at the Brehon Hotel, the group will host Professor Nick Maynard, a leading Gastro-Intestinal Surgeon who has visited hospitals on the frontline in Gazza.

He will give a talk on the difficulties facing medical staff in Gazza during the current conflict.

“Professor Maynard has more than 25 years of extensive experience in his field of expertise. As well as being the immediate past president of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery of Great Britain and Ireland, he has also been travelling to Gaza for well over a decade providing medical education and train-

ing to Healthcare Workers there in both Al Shifa and Al-Aqsa hospitals,” event organiser Susan Larkin told the Killarney Advertiser.

“This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to hear a first-hand account of the dire condition of the healthcare system in Gaza currently and promises to be a fascinating lecture.”

Tickets can be pre-booked via the Eventbrite portal by searching ‘An evening with Professor Nick Maynard, Surgeon, on his experiences in Gaza’.

John Fitzgerald's incredible 55 years at the Great Southern

This week, Great Southern Killarney proudly celebrated John Fitzgerald's incredible 55-year tenure with the hotel, marked by a wonderful party with some surprise guests.

John began his distinguished career at Great Southern on July 1st, 1969, and has since become a beloved and integral ambassador for the hotel, where he has worked tirelessly and with unwavering dedication.

John's illustrious journey with Great Southern Killarney is marked not only by his long service but also by his extensive experience in the hospitality industry.

Over the decades, when the Killarney hospitality industry was a more seasonal affair, Great Southern encouraged team

members to broaden their horizons and share their knowledge.

This is something John took to heart as he brought his expertise to numerous European cities, including Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, and Paris, and even ventured across the Atlantic to St. Louis, Missouri.

His international experience has enriched his contributions to the hotel, enhancing the guest experience with a blend of global insight and local charm.

In 1970, during an exciting chapter in

the hotel's history, John was part of the team that hosted the cast and crew of the famous movie "Ryan's Daughter," who stayed at the Great Southern Killarney during the entire filming period. This historical event is just one highlight of John's long and storied career. Known for his great sense of humour, generous spirit, and ever-present smile, John is adored by both staff and guests alike.

His commitment to Great Southern Killarney is exemplary, and his hard work serves as an inspiration to everyone around him. John plays an invaluable part in guests' experiences, consistently going above and beyond to ensure memorable stays.

The team at Great Southern pulled out all the stops to celebrate John’s milestone, marking the occasion with a surprise party at the hotel, attended by team members past and present, friends and family. The event was made even more special, as John’s sisters travelled from America and Spain to surprise him.

"We are immensely proud to have John as part of the Great Southern Team," said Jamie Power, General Manager at Great Southern Killarney.

"His dedication, loyalty, and enthusiasm over the past 55 years have been nothing short of extraordinary. As we celebrate 170 years in business this July, I can’t think of a better person to represent the warmth and genuine hospitality for which Great Southern Killarney is famous. The wonderful reception and turnout for the party today is a testament to how loved and respected he is. Thank you, John, for being such a valued member of our work family, and an example for us all to aspire to."

J Mac John scoops prestigious business award

Established 19 years ago as Cartridge Company, JMAC IT & Office Solutions began by specializing in printing and office stationery.

In 2012, the company expanded into IT services, leveraging John’s background in Industrial Engineering, which includes workspace layout and ergonomics. This shift allowed JMAC to offer a comprehensive suite of office solutions. Today, JMAC offers a wide range of services to both individuals and businesses. These include expert advice on IT and printing, ergonomics, office layouts, and a full range of office equipment like shredders, printers, copiers, and scanners. John summarizes, "Companies want to focus on their core activities without distractions, and that’s where we come in."

The All Ireland Business Foundation

(AIBF) has recognized JMAC IT & Office Solutions as Kerry Business of the Year 2024 for their exceptional IT services and office design. After receiving All Star accreditation two years ago for Thought Leader in Ergonomics and Office Planning it was fabulous to receive the honour this year. The honour, based on rigorous criteria, underscores the company’s commitment to quality and customer service. AIBF’s Managing Director, Kapil Khanna, noted, "The accreditation, held by over 600 firms, is vital for SMEs that need formal benchmarks. We evaluate companies on trustworthiness, performance, and feedback from various stakeholders."

John expressed his gratitude: "We are thrilled to receive this recognition from AIBF. It validates our hard work and dedication over the years. Thanks to our small, dedicated team, we have earned this important seal of approval, which boosts our confidence for the future. Trust is at the core of our performance, especially the trust our customers place in us."

Recently, JMAC completed a new office layout for Finance for You, converting upstairs apartments into an open office and meeting room, while updating downstairs offices. Brian Leslie, the owner, praised JMAC: "The results have been brilliant. Working with John and his team, we explored numerous 3D layouts, colour schemes, acoustics, glass partitions, and furniture options to

find the perfect fit. Their expertise and attention to detail ensured that all our needs were met. I highly recommend John and his team to any business looking to revamp their office or to start up on an entirely new project”.

In addition to office layouts, JMAC conducts workplace risk assessments, focusing on ergonomics to ensure employee health and well-being, as required by the Safety & Health at Work Act 2005. JMAC’s IT services include WiFi installation, VOIP phone systems, hardware setup, cloud services, Office 365, and remote management. Marcella Rattigan, General Manager of Springfort Hall Hotel, shared her positive experience: "JMAC IT & Office Solutions manage our IT very efficiently. Their prompt response, top notch customer support and exceptional service and reliability make them highly recommendable."

Located in Old Market Lane, Killarney, JMAC offers great value on laptops, desktops (with Microsoft Office 2021 and antivirus included at no extra cost), printers, and other IT devices. They also provide repair services and a wide range of ink and toners.

In 2019, JMAC acquired Mailbox etc. Killarney (MBE), enabling worldwide shipping of various items, from paintings to golf clubs, alcohol, passports etc. Their slogan, "Big or Small, we ship it all," highlights their broad capabilities.

JMAC extends heartfelt thanks to their loyal customers, emphasizing the importance of shopping local for great value and service.

As small local retailer we are providing exceptional value to our customers. By focusing on affordable, reliable technology, we help our customers save hundreds of euros while ensuring they have the essential tools they need for their personal and professional tasks. Our commitment to quality and cost-efficiency, as well as our guaranteed aftersales service and reasonable repair costs should make us the go-to choice for budget-conscious shoppers looking for dependable tech solutions.

The Killarney Folk Collective (KFC), a passionate group of creatives, performers and musicians, are getting ready for their fourth Eats + Beats Festival, which promises to be bigger and better than before.

The exciting, not-for-profit event will take place outdoors in Dunloe, Killarney, offering a vibrant celebration of music, food, and arts.

The one day festival will be filled with live music, captivating performances, and a a range of cool art installations. Past festivals have featured renowned acts like Damian Mullane and Donal Dineen, alongside a showcase of talented local musicians and DJs. This year promises an equally impressive line-up with the popular Two Time Polka returning again, Kila and Megatrad, Cáit Ní Riain, Steve

4D, Kev O’Leary, Archive and Captain Birdsong ensuring a day of great tunes.

Food is a cornerstone of the Eats + Beats experience. This year's festival welcomes back crowd favourites like The Hungry Donkey, The Black Sheep, and Muckross Ice Cream, alongside a selection of exciting new vendors. Attendees can indulge in delicious local fare, catering to a variety of tastes and dietary needs.

Eats + Beats is aiming to be one of the most sustainable festivals in Ireland this summer. The festival location, which used to be a 9-hole golf course, has recently been transformed into a major rewilding project. Undeterred by the recent bad weather, the folk collective, armed with shovels, rakes and hedge cutters, have been working every Wednesday since April, carefully forging pathways and trails through the site grounds in anticipation of the large

crowds expected at the event. We caught up with one of the organising members, Colm Casey this week and asked him what people can expect on the day:

“It is going to be a pretty cool and unique experience. Festival goers will stumble on hidden coves and seating areas in the trees. Wandering through the forest, people will stumble on some art installations built into the natural landscape”

“The main stage, which is looking out into the Gap of Dunloe, will have some brilliant musicians and bands lined up, as well as some talented up-and-coming local artists like Lucy June and Faux Mystic. As the sun sets behind the Reeks we expect the DJ stage up on the hill to come alive. We have some cool natural structures built for the silent disco experience too. All in all it’s going to be a really cool day with a few surprises for festivalgoers too. We can’t wait to welcome everyone along and show them what we have been working on over the past few months”.

MUSIC ART WELFARE

The festival remains committed to showcasing a diverse range of musical talent. Attendees can expect a mix of rock, indie, trad, folk, electronic, and even a silent disco! The celebration of Irish music will continue with the inclusion of both established acts like Kila and Two time Polka, alongside up-and-coming local talents.

Food is a cornerstone of the Eats & Beats experience. This year's festival welcomes back crowd favourites like The Hungry Donkey, Gorilla Kitchen, The Black Sheep, and Muckross Ice Cream, alongside a selection of exciting new vendors. Attendees can indulge in delicious local fare, catering to a variety of tastes and dietary needs.

Festivalgoers can look forward to an array of art installations. The festival will feature a curated selection of works, with some surprises to be revealed on the day of the event. Festival decorations will be an artistic spectacle in themselves, most of which will be created from up-cycled materials, in line with the festivals sustainable ethos.

The festival prioritises the safety and well-being of all attendees. Partnering with Psycare Ireland, a mental health organisation focused on providing support at festivals and events, the festival will offer mental health resources and support services throughout the weekend. There will also be a sensory area and tent for autistic attendees.

Mayor Healy-Rae leads celebration of IrishAmerican friendship

Last week’s Celebration of Irish-American Friendship marked new Mayor Maura Healy-Rae’s first official public engagement since taking office.

Cllr Healy-Rae was the Grand Marshal for the spectacular parade that took place on July 4.

Healy-Rae waved to the crowd from a sleek open-top dream machine piloted by Sean O’Donoghue. The parade certainly had the wow factor with custom-built floats, marching bands, fun-filled Disney characters, energetic cheerleaders, Great Gatsby dancers and so much more and as free summertime entertainment spectacles go, Killarney proved yet again that nobody does it better.

Organisers Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce executive described the Celebration of Irish-American Friendship

as an overwhelming success that went down an absolute treat with visitors and locals who lined the streets in great numbers to join in the occasion.

The Chamber expressed particular gratitude to the numerous locals and business interests who played their part as volunteer stewards, ensuring everything went according to plan and that everybody had a celebration to remember.

The Chamber has also acknowledged the enormous role played by Kerry County Council, Killarney Municipal District Council and Fáilte Ireland in their support of this year’s festival.

Career Q&A

Thank you to everyone who submitted a question in the last few weeks. I will attempt to answer as many as I can here.

I have a second interview coming up. How will it differ from the first? The panel will be slightly different –you may meet more senior people. They will probably have prepared an internal note of the first interview, highlighting some areas they want to follow up with you. The second interview questions are likely to be more in-depth and you will be required to give more detailed answers. The interview will probably be longer. I always recommend that after your first interview you take time out to think about what went well, where you could improve and points that you wanted to make but didn’t – factor all of this into your preparation for your second interview. And always prepare some questions that you can ask the second interview panel.

How long should my CV be?

No more than 2 pages of A4. Keep the headings and formatting clear and concise.

Should I put my photo on my CV?

No, it’s really not necessary.

I have been working for 30 years –do I need to put every job I ever had?

No you don’t. I recommend the last 15 years.

Should I have a photo on my LinkedIn profile?

Yes, it’s the first point of contact someone will have with you – and the first thing they look at.

When should I join LinkedIn?

My personal opinion is when you start University/College or your first job. You can then begin building a professional network.

My manager thinks appraisals are a bit of a joke and doesn’t take them seriously BUT I want to get ahead in my career and I think they are important. What should I do?

That’s a difficult situation, but not uncommon. My personal view is to take ownership of the process, complete all the paperwork, give it to your manager in advance of the meeting and at the meeting steer the conversation and ensure that you come away with agreed goals and objectives you are happy with.

Do you recommend PowerPoint for presentations?

Yes, they are a useful tool – particularly if you are talking through complex graphs or financial results. However, be careful not to read the presentation from the slides. I also recommend not distributing the slides as a handout until after the presentation –as people will read the handouts and not listen to you!

Greenhouse gas emissions the lowest in 30 years

A 6.8% decrease in emissions was recorded in 2023, the lowest figure Ireland has experienced in three decades, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The report showed reductions ‘in almost all sectors’ according to the EPA. There was a 7.1% decrease in residential emissions, as well as a 21.6% decrease in power generation outflow. The carbon dioxide equivalent per person has also decreased, from 11.4 tonnes in 1990 to 10.4 tonnes in 2023. This data displays the largest yearly reductions in the agriculture and energy sectors, while residential emissions are

the lowest level since 1990. However, there has been a marginal increase in transport emissions by 0.3%.

‘“These are significant findings that signal the impact of climate action and decarbonisation measures across Ireland’s economy and society,” Laura Burke, the director general of the EPA commented. Burke also reports on the commitments of the Climate Act 2015, with reductions still well off the target of a 51% total reduction by 2030. “The data indicates a move towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the scale and pace required to meet our climate ambition of a 51% reduction by 2030.” Burke examines a healthy

progress in Irelands fight, but still a goal that is unattainable and outside our reach for now.

For 2024 and 2025, the EPA is warranting an ‘annual reduction’ of at least 8.3% of emissions for Ireland to stay within the first carbon budget. The EPA recognises the positive results for the year 2023 but warns that Ireland are “still well off track in terms of meeting EU and national 2023 targets”, saying that “we need to maintain and further build momentum.”

Palestinian president invited to address Dáil

In what will be a historic visit, Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian President, may visit Ireland and address the members of the Oireachtas.

This possibility is being explored by Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl and the Palestinian ambassador, on the back of Ireland’s formal recognition of Palestine earlier this year. If this comes to fruition, President Abbas would speak in the Dail and address politicians in Leinster House, marking a historical moment in the relations between Palestine and the rest of the world. This decision was made at a meeting of the Business Committee last week. Mr Ó Fearghaíl is strongly against and has ruled out extending a similar relation to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister. “I wouldn't contemplate for a minute inviting that man anywhere to anything. I think he's a leading part of an enormous, murderous campaign which revolts the Irish people, revolts us here in Leinster House,” Mr Ó Fearghaíl commented. A visit by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to Ireland is also planned, with a formal invitation being sent out this week.

Starmer ‘committed’

Newly-elected UK prime minister Keir Starmer visited Stormont on Monday, and is ‘committed’ to the Good Friday Agreement when confronted with the possibility of a referendum and Irish unification.

Claiming to ‘hit the ground running’ once in 10 Downing Street, Starmer has committed to visiting Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in his first few days of being PM. On Monday morning, Starmer arrived in Stormont and met with First Minister Michelle O’Neill of Sinn Féin and deputy First Minister Emma Lit-

Friday agreement

tle-Pengelly of the DUP. President of Sinn Féin Mary Lou McDonald warned Starmer not to “bury his head in the sand” when confronted with the possibility of a border poll and new political divisions. “All is changed here and changing,” she told the new PM on Monday. When responding to questions issued by the media on the promise of a potential border poll during his time in office, Starmer ambiguously replied, “This is provided for by the Good Friday Agreement, the framework is set out and I am absolutely committed to the Good Friday Agreement.” He continued,

“Today is a recommitment to that and to the approach and the role of the UK government in that as the honest broker.” It is evident that little new ground was broken however it is still early doors in the relationship between the new UK government and Northern Ireland. There was also discussions between Starmer and Sinn Féin on the urgency of Casement Park’s restructuring in light of Euro 2028, with O’Neill describing the joint-hosting of the tournament as a “momentous occasion for our people and economy.”

Oldest ever human art discovered in Indonesia

Cave-art, presumably of three human-like figures and a big red pig, has just been discovered in the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi. It dates back 51,200 years, 5,000 years older than the previous caveart discovery.

A team of Indonesian and Australian scientists made the discovery, which helps with the understanding of human evolution and the capacity for artistic and creative thought. “The painting tells a complex story. It is the oldest evidence we have for storytelling. It shows that humans at the time had the capacity to think in abstract terms,” Prof Maxime Aubert from Griffith University in Australia stated.

It is unsure what the painting represents. It includes three human figures,

one larger than the rest, and one upside down. Two of the three humans seem to be brandishing sticks, with one of the humans touching the pig’s head. An enigma of an ancient time that may never be truly understood, a guess may be a sort of hunting or feasting ritual. Although this creation isn’t the oldest example of ancient drawing (that being certain rocks in the Blombos Caves in southern Africa), it is believed to be the first ever discovery of representational art and abstract thought. “It is very romantic to think that at some point in that time something happened in the human brain, but I think it is more likely that there are even earlier examples of representational art,” Dr Henry Gee, senior editor of the published details, said.

Dublin Zoo's 17-year-old Asian elephant tests positive for EEHV

Dublin Zoo has confirmed that a third elephant, 17-year-old ‘Asha’ has tested positive for Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV). The virus is a type of herpes that can lie dormant for years before causing symptoms and has a very high mortality rate in animals under ten years old.

Asha's age may be an advantage in this situation. Because she is older, her body has had more time to develop antibodies to fight the infection, potentially giving her a greater chance of survival. EEHV is a serious and unpredictable illness, but with early detection and the right treatment, the zoo is hopeful for a positive outcome.

Astrophysicist shares visions after near-death experience

A prominent astrophysicist has recounted a profound experience after being clinically dead for seven minutes. The unnamed academic, who wishes to remain anonymous, suffered a lung haemorrhage that led to cardiac arrest.

Doctors revived him after seven minutes, during which time he says he had a series of visions.

While acknowledging the lack of oxygen to his brain likely caused the experience, the academic described seeing "a series of three oval ellipses, one at a time, suspended in a black void. The ellipses displayed beautiful landscapes, but the colours eventually turned a sickly yellow." This description deviates from more common near-death experiences, which often involve light, warmth, or a

sense of peace.

The academic, a seasoned researcher with over four decades of experience in astrophysics, emphasised that the neardeath experience has fundamentally changed his perspective on death. "I'm not scared of dying, not in the least," he stated. "Afraid of what comes before, sure, but nature makes dying easy."

Dundalk pioneers Ireland's first 3D-printed social housing scheme

Ireland is making history with the construction of its first-ever 3D-printed social housing units in Dundalk, County Louth.

This pioneering project, a collaboration between Louth County Council, Louth and Meath Education & Training Board (LMETB), Irish company Harcourt Technologies Ltd (HTL), and Roadstone Ltd, signifies a potential solution in addressing the nation's housing needs.

The project, located at Grange Close, involves the creation of three three-bedroom terraced houses, each boasting an impressive 110 square meters of living space spread over two floors. This innovative 3D construction printing technology (3DCP) promises a faster and potentially more sustainable approach to housing construction.

"We are proud to be involved in this very significant pilot project at Grange Close," said Joan Martin, Chief Execu-

tive of Louth County Council. 3DCP offers the potential to significantly reduce construction times compared to traditional methods. Experts estimate these homes could be completed up to three times faster, with a projected completion date of October 2024.

This project isn't just about speed; it also explores the potential for increased efficiency and sustainability in construction. HTL, the company leading the 3D printing aspect, has already successfully constructed two test houses at their facility in Drogheda. These initial builds provided valuable insights into the feasibility and effectiveness of 3DCP for social housing.

The success of this pilot project could pave the way for a wider adoption of 3DCP technology in Ireland's construction sector. This could lead to a faster and potentially more eco-friendly approach to tackling the country's housing challenges.

Supports for Carers

People providing care for family members often are so busy with their caring responsibilities that they do not always have time to look at what supports are available to them.

Some people do not even think of themselves as Carers as they consider their work as part of an unspoken promise to be there for loved ones when they need them.

The two main social welfare payments for carers providing full-time care are Carer’s Allowance and Carer’s Benefit. There is also an annual Carer’s Support Grant.

What is the difference between Carer’s Benefit & Carer’s Allowance?

Carer’s Benefit is a short-term payment paid for up to 2 years to people who give up employment to care on a full-time basis for someone who requires full-time care and attention. It is PRSI based and you have to have a certain number of PRSI contributions paid. People who are self-employed and paying a Class S PRSI contribution will not qualify.

Carer’s Allowance is a means–tested payment for people who are caring on a full-time basis for someone who requires full-time care and attention and will require it for at least 12 months. You must also satisfy the habitual residency condition to qualify for Carer’s Allowance.

What does ‘full time care’ mean?

A person is classified as needing fulltime care when they need continual supervision to avoid danger to themselves or they need continual supervision and frequent assistance throughout the day with normal bodily functions. For example, help to walk and get about, eat or drink, get washed or dressed. The Department of Social Protection will decide if the person needs full-time care. This decision is based on the information that the Carer provides on the application form

The person being cared for must have their doctor complete, sign and stamp the Medical Report, which is part of the Carer’s Benefit and Carer’s Allowance application form. This Medical Report is not needed if the person being cared for is a child who is getting Domiciliary Care Allowance.

Do you have to be caring for a set number of hours to qualify for a Carer’s payment?

The time spent providing care must not be less than 35 hours per week,

over 5-7 days. If you are away, you must be able to arrange full-time care for the person you care for.

Carer’s Benefit is for people who leave work to provide care. Does the person have to resign from their job?

No, the person does not have to give up their job if they are applying for Carer’s Benefit. The person can apply for Carer’s Leave from their employment. This leave allows employees to leave work temporarily to provide full-time care and attention for someone who needs it. You can take carer’s leave for a minimum of 13 weeks and up to a maximum of 104 weeks.

Carer’s leave from employment is unpaid but your job will be kept open for when you return.

You must have worked for your employer for 12 months without a break in employment. Employers are entitled to at least 6 weeks written notice from the employee of the intention to take carer’s leave.

How many hours can you work while on Carer’s Benefit or Carer’s Allowance and how much can you earn?

You can be employed, self-employed, in training or in education outside the home for up to a maximum of 18.5 hours per week.

If on Carer’s Benefit, the maximum amount you can earn is €350 per week after tax, PRSI & Union dues are deducted.

Currently, if you are single, €350 of your total weekly income is not taken into account in the means test for Carer’s Allowance. If you are married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting the first

Q. What is the Carer’s Support Grant?

The Carer’s Support Grant is paid annually to carers by the Department of Social Protection (DSP). It used to be called the Respite Care Grant. It amounts to €1,850.

It is paid once a year, usually on the first Thursday in June, for each person you are caring for. It is not taxable. You cannot be working outside the home for more than 18.5 hours or signing for Jobseeker’s Credits. You can apply for this payment even if you are not receiving Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Benefit.

If you are caring for more than person, you can get the Carer’s Support Grant for each person.

Q. What is the Long Term Carers Contribution scheme?

€750 of your combined total weekly income is disregarded.

This will change from June 2024. From then, the income disregard for Carer’s Allowance will increase to €450 for a single person and €900 for a couple. What is included in the means test for Carer’s Allowance?

The main sources of income included in the means test for Carer’s Allowance are any cash income and capital income – this includes savings, investments, shares or any property you have (but not your own home).

The first €50,000 of your capital is not taken into account. Any payment from the Department of Social Protection is not included in the means test

You can get up to €14,000 per year for renting out a room in your own home without it affecting your payment. Citizens Information staff can help you work out how the means test would apply in your individual situation.

Q. What is the qualifying condition for Half-Rate Carer’s?

If you are in one of the following situations, you may qualify for half-rate Carer’s Allowance:

Already getting Carer’s Allowance but also meet the qualifying criteria for another social welfare payment

Changed from another social welfare payment to get Carer’s Allowance

Caring for someone and being claimed for by a spouse, civil partner or cohabitant

Getting a social welfare payment other than Carer’s Allowance and caring for someone

You cannot get half-rate carer’s if you are in receipt of a jobseekers payment

Under the Long-Term Carers Contribution scheme, if you have been a fulltime carer for at least 20 years (1040 weeks), you can get Long-Term Carers Contributions to help you qualify for the State Pension (Contributory). A Long-Term Carers Contribution is the same as a paid contribution on your PRSI record for each week that you provide full-time care. The contribution makes it easier for a carer to qualify for the State Pension Contributory when they reach pension age.

Q. Are there any additional supports available to Carers that we have not already covered?

If you get Carer’s Allowance you may also get the Free Household Benefits Package (if you are living with the person you are caring for) and Free Travel. If you get Carer’s Benefit or Carer’s Allowance, at full or half-rate, you are eligible for a GP visit card.

If the person that you are caring for passes away, your Carer’s Benefit payment will continue for 6 weeks following the death, while Carer’s Allowance continues for 12 weeks.

There are also some tax credits e.g. the Home Carer Tax Credit. There is also an Incapacitated Child Tax Credit and if you maintain a dependent relative, you may qualify for the Dependent Relative Tax Credit. Contact your local CIC for more details as to whether or not these apply in your situation.

If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie You can also contact us by telephone or email: Killarney

Motor club helps a young newcomer settle into town

A young rally driver who now lives and works in Killarney is all set to drive her second-ever event having made her debut at the Rally of the Lakes in May.

Louise Bourke, 23, will be making a home county appearance this weekend as she competes in the Stonethrowers Rally, having grown up watching the rally.

The Clonmel native, who lives and works with Tricel in Killarney, got into the sport having watched her uncle Sidney Bourke compete over the years.

Fast forward to 2024 and she is now involved with the Killarney and District Motor Club, which helped her on her way to the Rally of the Lakes where she picked up the Novice Award in the junior class.

Huge turnout at annual classic and vintage show

Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club had a huge turn out for the annual Classic and Vintage Show at the racecourse on Sunday.

With an almost full attendance of 130 vehicles, with cars, jeeps and motorbikes as far back as 1936 there was something for everyone.

Along with the main show, there was also a display of Volkswagen Golfs which is celebrating 50 years of production.

At least one version of each Golf, from a 1974 Mk1 to a 2004 model was on display.

“Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club

would especially like to thank those who brought their pristine vehicles on the day to put on display for the general public to view. We are always amazed at the quality of Classic vehicles that come to our show."

"Also. the hardworking dedicated members who put in weeks of work behind the scenes to ensure the show runs so smoothly,” said club PRO Richard O’Donoghue.

The competition has a storied history in Killarney schools.

Back in 2007, St Oliver’s pupil Leon Hen-

nessy asked if the school could start a pitch and putt competition.

After much perseverance from Leon, teacher Noel O'Sullivan asked his colleague Tommy Galvin, who they dubbed as their ‘Minister of Sports’, and it was organised for June 2008.

As part of the competition the winner would receive the Brendan Walshe Shield in honour of the former principal of St

Oliver’s.

Tommy Galvin retired from teaching in 2021.

At this point it was decided to expand the competition and open it to all primary schools in the Killarney catchment area. It was decided to name the shield for this new inter schools' competition the ‘Tommy Galvin Shield’ as it would be a fitting recognition of Tommy’s work promoting pitch and putt and golf in the primary schools in Killarney.

Mr. Galvin was at the event and treated the students to some goodies afterwards and the weather was perfect for the event.

Kerry on cusp of All-Ireland final but stubborn Armagh pose real danger

Kerry v Armagh

Saturday 5.30pm

Croke Park | Live on RTÉ

Kerry’s loyal band of travelling supporters will be hoping for better fare in Croke Park on Saturday as their team fights it out with Armagh for a place in the 2024 All-Ireland final.

The entertainment served up in the five-point semi-final victory over Derry a fortnight ago was greeted coolly by some fans who deemed the encounter to be of the boring variety.

Of course, for Jack O’Connor and his players, winning is all that matters and in fairness to the men in green and gold they ultimately navigated the tie with little fuss. It’s a case of ‘needs must’ in the championship and it should really be considered a positive that The Kingdom were able to change up their gameplan and win against a potentially difficult opponent. They will need to be professional and clinical again this weekend. Armagh might be underdogs but Kieran McGeeney’s Ulster runners-up certainly pack a punch.

The Orchard County were not overly impressive in their 2-12 to 0-12 win over Roscommon in the quarters but they boast a stubborn defensive record having kept clean sheets in 12 of their 14 games so far. They also have highly skilled forwards like Rian O’Neill and Conor Turbitt, with the lively Oisín Conaty and Stefan Campbell also more than capable in front of the posts. O’Neill is a talismanic figure for Armagh but he was quiet against the Rossies and was taken off early. Kerry will

be hoping for more of the same but they should not count on it. The Crossmaglen playmaker is a talented individual and he will be desperate to make a mark in what will be his county’s biggest outing in almost 20 years.

Kerry should have more or less a clean bill of health with Graham O’Sullivan back in full training after recovering from his ankle injury.

The match will be presided over by last year’s All-Ireland final referee David Gough.

Kerry v Armagh will be preceded by the Tailteann Cup final between Down and Laois at 3pm.

The other All-Ireland semi-final will take place on Sunday at 4pm as Pádraic Joyce’s Galway take on Jim McGuinness’ Donegal.

In other intercounty football news, Mickey Harte has stepped down as Derry manager after just one season at the helm. Despite leading the team to Division 1 glory in the spring, Harte remained a divisive figure in the county due to his Tyrone roots and preferred style of play.

After a largely uninspiring championship that culminated in that quarter-final defeat to Kerry, Harte has announced that he will not be staying on.

Fermanagh native Malachy O’Rourke is rumoured to be in contention to take Harte’s place.

Kingdom banish Royals and advance to last four

Strong second half performance sees Kerry ladies through

LGFA ALL-IRELAND SENIOR QUARTER-FINAL

Kerry 0 - 16 | Meath 0 - 8

AUSTIN STACK PARK

The Kerry ladies emulated their male counterparts by advancing to another All-Ireland football semi-final on Saturday last, and like the men they, too, will face Armagh in the last four.

The parallels don’t stop there. The Kingdom have suddenly been handed the favourites tag after reigning champions Dublin were dumped out by Galway –which is exactly what happened in the men’s championship the week before. Neither camps will be getting carried away just yet but the ladies will certainly be delighted to have overcome Meath in the quarters. Played before a large crowd in Tralee, it was the proverbial game of two halves as the visitors used the wind to establish a narrow one-point lead by half-time.

Kerry were the better team in the second half, however, and with the elements in their favour they were able to race away to victory. Laoch na hImeartha Anna Galvin ran the show from midfield while Síofra O’Shea continued her impressive return from a serious knee injury by adding three points off the bench. Vikki Wall also entered the fray for Meath but the Ireland Rugby Sevens star was unable to influence the game in a major way.

Kerry managers Darragh Long and Declan Quill will be pleased with the way their side handled the game and they should be confident as they prepare for the All-Ireland semi-final against Armagh, which will take place in Tullamore, Offaly next Saturday (July 20).

The match will form part of a double header with the other semi-final which sees Galway take on Cork.

Ulster champions Armagh got the better of Mayo in their quarter-final clash at the Athletic Grounds with Blaithin Mackin scoring 1-3 in a 2-11 to 0-11 win. Elsewhere, Cork beat neighbours Waterford by seven points and, as mentioned above, Galway unexpectedly defeated Dublin by 3-7 to 1-12 AET.

Kerry to advance but don’t expect fireworks

Eamonn Fitzgerald shares his verdict on Saturday’s

All-Ireland

semi-final between Kerry and Armagh

Surprise, surprise. First, the all-conquering Dubs crashed out and now Limerick, the red-hot favourites to make the Drive for Five a reality came unstuck when the Rebels triumphed in convincing style at a packed All-Ireland hurling semi-final in Croke Park on Sunday last. Now it is an open fare with Cork and Clare both expecting to win the MacCarthy Cup.

But first up this weekend is the chase for the Sam Maguire with Kerry, Armagh, Donegal and Galway fancying their chances. The competition was blown wide open when the magnificent Dublin team eventually folded the tent, as Eoin Liston once described the end of a glorious era of football supremacy.

And let’s be truly honest, Dublin were special and contributed so much to the GAA. Yes, time to fold the tent. The circus is over for Dublin, just as it was for the Kerry of the Golden Years. But they will be back in 2025, most likely with a new boss.

Kerry will meet Armagh tomorrow (Saturday) at the ridiculous time of 5.30pm. Once more the GAA CCC showed scant regard for the logistics facing Kerry supporters on the trip to Croker. Saturday evening Dublin traffic from the motorway (Newbridge onwards) and the unsuitability of such a late train for Irish Rail passengers. They wouldn’t even be out of Croke Park after a possible penalty shootout to make the last train from Heuston at 7pm.

An extra late train has been organised but fancy the early hours of the morning for readers of this Killarney Advertiser or supporters from Valentia Island. Crazy timing once more.

Pé scéal é, let’s address the greetings and questions that have been coming my way all week, encapsulated in “well, will they do it now?” That’s loaded in meaning.

‘Well’ hints at serious questioning, and ‘will’ and ‘can’ are different concepts. Hark back to last year’s capitulation to a Dublin team that was there for the taking. Bemused foreign tourists can’t fathom out the local lingo. Well, the mission is to bring back Sam to its

Kingdom home. Last year’s submission to the Dubs still rankles and one wonders if the bitter pill was fully digested over the past year.

The current situation reminds me so much of 2014 when everyone expected the Dubs to win. Donegal did Kerry a big favour by dumping the Dubs and then Kerry went on to defeat Donegal in the final. Sam came home; it was just like the shock and delight of a parent when their immigrant offspring walked in home unexpectedly. Wow.

FOOTBALL GRIDLOCK

Kerry v Derry was a dreadful game. Getting a result is a euphemism for boring, pedestrian football, and gridlock for 90% of the match. That has been well unpacked in this and other sports articles. Job done, ugly but a passage to the final. It could be more of the same tomorrow with Armagh adopting the 14 men behind the ball on the slow road to China, enticing Kerry into an overcrowded opponent's area. I don’t expect a good-quality game, but I still expect Kerry to book the passage to the final.

Crucially Armagh are not winners per se. Are they chokers or just non-finishers, unable to breast the winning tape? How many times in recent years have they been like Mayo, the eternal bridesmaids, almost there but failing to close out games, more often than not in penalty shootouts? Mayo played delightful football; Armagh didn’t, but they had similar fates.

Winning is a habit and Kerry’s tradition in Croke Park stands up. Not last year, of course, the All-Ireland final they should have won against the Dubs side in decline. We had plenty of discussions on the same at Mícheál’s funeral last week.

NO GREAT SHAKES

We’re no great shakes was the consensus. I concur, but still feel Kerry can go all the way. They can mix it with the northern styles and did well eventually in the final quarter against Derry, giving some solace to all for the boredom of most of the game.

Kerry will certainly win if they do not concede a goal. That was the secret of

2022 when the Tally strategy worked like a dream. Tiger (Morley) closed off the bearna baol, ensuring that no runner was going to come through the middle unchallenged to have a potshot at Shane Ryan. He also positioned himself in front of Jason Foley who went on to play a blinder. However, the scourge of leaking goals through the central spine emerged once more this season, until the Derry game. The most recent time I saw Armagh v Kerry in the flesh was that league game at Tralee in 2023, when Kerry just stumbled over the line. Ar-

ing figures, more like scrambling to contain their opponents. Yes, Derry’s duo of Glass and Rogers are the best in the country, and it was into the second half before Diarmuid really got going.

DOWNSIDES

Let’s get the downsides out of the way. The brilliant Clifford brothers have not yet reached the dizzy heights of the past, even allowing for the treble marking and the nasty fouling by their opponents, ignored by the referee, who then opts for the easy decision. Give a yellow card to David and his marker. Guilty or innocent, the

magh’s style of play hasn’t changed. Two players in particular impressed me that night. Rian O’Neill is a clinical finisher and a delightful natural scorer of goals and points. Also, Jarly Óg Burns, son of GAA President Jarlath Burns, who operated at midfield is impressive. It will be interesting and important to see where Armagh will play O’Neill. I hope Paul Murphy will be tasked with man-marking him. Paul, a star in 2014, is ultra-reliable and deserves to hold his place on the starting 15.

Tom O’Sullivan can also do a man-marking job, but his first inclination is to go forward in search of a score at the risk of conceding points to his direct opponent. I’ve often referred to his delightful three points superbly struck with the outside of the foot while ignoring his primary function. Kerry do not have a reliable midfield. The two O’Connors from Tralee are the best we have, but not command-

punishment is the same. Injustice. David Clifford is a big strong boy and well able to look after himself but he needs protection from the referee. Will Jim Gavin address that issue? We’ll see.

Seán O’Shea is no longer the deliverer of seven points, five from frees. So, in this negative, dog-eat-dog contest where 14 points each may send it to a penalty shootout, who is going to score for Kerry?

At low water, the above trio should score eight points.

Tony Brosnan is a natural scorer and along with his great role of assisting scores, he is good for a few points. Add in two from midfield, at least three from the marauding Kerry backs via Ó Beaglaoich and others, and a few more off the bench from Burke and Spillane. Whichever team rattles the net will be well on their way to the final.

GEEZER’S RECORD

The downside for Armagh is that no matter how often they go to the well,

the leaking bucket kills their chances. Furthermore, Geezer has failed to win any silverware. He drew a blank in Kildare and despite all of his planning and toughness, he has failed to deliver in all big games in Ulster or on the national stage with Armagh.

Kieran Donaghy will be a help to give an insight into how to blunt the Kerry attack, but four years into this role with Armagh has also drawn a blank for Star. Jack O’Connor has a fine record, but to add to this I hope he takes corrective action early and does not wait until late in the game to make the necessary changes. Kerry were lucky to win in 2022 which was a straight shootout between two delightful kickers, David Clifford and Shane Walsh. Walsh destroyed Tom O’Sullivan in that final. Why Kerry selectors did not plug that gap early astounded me. Any great player can have an off day. Then move

him to the other corner where he may improve. If he doesn’t improve on that move, he needs to be replaced. That is not a criticism of Tom O’Sullivan, who is an All-Star defender, but of management who allow a leak to develop into a deluge of scores.

Spillane and Burke did so well against Derry. If things are not going well in the forwards or at midfield, bring in Burke, but do it decisively and early. He is a big, strong, direct player and I am reliably informed that he is right up with Gavin White as the fastest man in the

sprints. I would love to see him taking Route 1 to goal. At worst he will draw the foul; at best he will relieve David Clifford from some of those Armagh handcuffs and a goal may be on.

THE YAWNING OF THE DAY

It won’t be nice to watch over 70 minutes, but I still believe that Kerry’s class will eventually shine through. I am not so sure of what to expect in the other semi-final, but I fancy Donegal to set up a Kerry v Donegal final. What one hopes for, of course, is a real football final: Kerry v Galway. God protect us from an Armagh v Donegal All-Ireland final. Maybe it would be the Dawning of the Day for the northerners in search of Sam, but for the bored spectators in the other 30 counties and the Irish diaspora it would be more like the Yawn-

ing of the Day.

Is it any wonder that the Limerick v Cork hurling thriller sold out the 82,500 seats by Friday last? Limerick have been great champions. As for The Rebels v The Banner, now that is going to be a great final.

SADDENED

The unexpected death of Bracker (Tommy Regan) is a sad reminder. The memories of the clap of his two hands, the thumbs up and the all-meaning wink will live on. What a great uplift one got from meeting Bracker any day. To all the extended O’Regan family, comhbhrón ó chroí.

The news also came through this week of the passing of All-Ireland winning Galway manager John O’Mahony at the age of 71. Sympathies to his family and friends.

‘There’s definitely more in me’

Kerry woman Sarah Leahy chats to Adam Moynihan about her recent outing at the National Outdoor Championships in Dublin. The Killarney Valley AC sprinter competed with the best of the best, including new Irish record holder Rhasidat Adeleke.

AM: You took part in the National Championships the weekend before last. How was that experience for you?

SL: Atmosphere-wise it was absolutely amazing. Just very good energy all around. And coming out for the final, obviously, Rhasidat brought a massive crowd. So that was really cool to be a part of because I don't think there's ever been a crowd that big at nationals before. To be in the final where so many people were there to watch her was obviously amazing.

What about the race itself?

I came fifth and ran a time of 11.74. On the day, with the whole excitement of it all, I was actually really happy with that. I was a bit disappointed but I was like, it's a great day overall. I ran well, didn't get a

medal but I was really close. I didn't get the perfect start like I did in the heat. So I was a little bit behind, but I just managed to come fifth in the end.

A week on, the excitement has kind of worn off, and I think there's definitely a lot more in me. I could've pipped the third place But yeah, it is what it is. It was still good. I'm happy with it.

It was very tight for third place, wasn't it?

Yeah, it was two-or-three-hundredths of a second and it was a blanket finish for four of us. So it was close but no cigar. Not this time. I came fifth last year as well, so I was hoping for at least fourth this year, but it ended up being the same. At least it wasn’t sixth! And there's definitely more in me as well. Time-wise I’m just waiting for it to kind of happen a little bit. I believe it will. It was amazing to be in a race where a national record was broken. And the standard was obviously very high across the board. All the big names were there.

It was a very high standard, yeah. Going in we kind of knew that first and second were gone (to Adeleke and Sarah Lavin). Everyone else was battling for that third medal and only one person could get it in the end. (Mollie O'Reilly got the bronze.) We were all close.

But overall I was super grateful to be in the mix, especially in a race that was that big. It’s one that will go down in history. It was a massive weekend and it was very enjoyable.

Rhasidat is a massive superstar now. What’s it like to run alongside her?

Rhasidat is a great athlete and a very nice girl. As you can see in interviews, she's very humble. So to compete next to her, to literally be running in the lane right beside her, was amazing. I couldn't have asked for more from the day in that respect. I thought she might have ran sub-11 because she did it before but she still got a national record. To be part of that race was a big deal for me.

Athletics in Ireland seems to be in a good place, particularly after the success the Irish team had in the recent European Championships in Rome. Does it feel like the sport is getting more attention and more recognition these days?

Oh 100%. Support for athletics has grown hugely in the last few years and I think it'll continue to grow, especially with the

success that Ireland had at the European Championships. I think the Olympics this year is going to drive that on even more because we have such great athletes going. The support is growing and rightfully so. The athletes are really getting the recognition they deserve. I think the future is very exciting for athletics in Ireland. What about your own career? What's next for you?

I have one last race of the season left, which is at the AAI Games on Sunday in Dublin. I’m hoping to just get a good run out, a good time, and execute the race well. Training will continue until the end of July, I’ll get a month off, and then we're back training for indoors next year. I love indoors. I think I excel at that. There's European Indoors and World Indoors next year, so to qualify for them would be a huge, huge goal.

As for outdoors, I’d like to get on the Irish relay team, but I’ll be focussing on indoors first. It should be a good year. Are you enjoying it?

Yeah, I'm really enjoying it. I think sometimes you might put too much pressure on yourself and try to get a PB in every race but this year I've really learned that I've done the training, so it will happen when it happens. Just go out and run and let your body do its thing. And I'm actually really enjoying competing this year. I know I'm going to continue enjoying it for the next few years.

With the surrounding support of the club and coaches and my training group, it's all going really well for me at the moment. I have no complaints at all. I'm very lucky. Thanks for your time, Sarah, and all the best for the rest of the season. Thank you very much, Adam. It was lovely talking to you.

DONAL CURTIN CUP: Drama was in plentiful supply in Fossa on Monday evening last as the Senior ladies withstood a mighty challenge from a gallant Laune Rangers outfit to capture the Donal Curtin Division 3 League final. An elongated second half and a missed penalty from the Launesiders added to the tension but a sterling defensive showing was the cornerstone of the victory. The accuracy of Ciara Randles and Kate McCarthy embellished that workrate and when the need was greatest, they popped up with a vital intervention. Laune Rangers opened the scoring before Kate opened the Legion account. Orianne McGillycuddy then knifed through the Mid Kerry defence to set up Ciara Randles for a neatly taken goal. The same duo added further points, all needed as the Rangers' Sara Leslie kept her side in touch at half time, 1-3 to 0-4. With the wind in their favour, Laune Rangers made an impressive start, nailing five points in the third quarter. Kate McCarthy kept in touch and with Ciara Randles also on target the game was evenly poised heading into the final furlong. Laune Rangers were awarded a penalty close to home, but the well struck effort just went the wrong side of the post, much to the relief of the green and white supporters, especially since Kate McCarthy had hit a monster free to put them one point clear previous to the spot kick award. The final moments were heart in the

mouth stuff but a combination of good defending and ball retention when needed saw them close out an epic game. Final score Killarney Legion 1-8 Laune Rangers 0-10. Team: Amy Walshe, Shania Costello, Kiah Doona, Zena Shine, Ellen Coffey, Keri Ann Hanrahan, Chloe Hue, Kate McCarthy, Eve Coffey, Andrea Murphy, Aine Devlin, Ann Marie O’Sullivan, Orianne McGillycuddy, Lauren Carey, Ciara Randles. Against a strong 1st half breeze Fossa found it hard to convert the many chances created but did very well to hold a lead of 1-03 to 1-02 at half time. Fossa tagged on the first few points immediately after the break only for Kilcummin to goal again to level it up. Thereafter, it was score for score with Kilcummin going ahead with minutes to go. Fossa pressed forward and got three unanswered points in the final two minutes to seal the victory. It was a close-run thing throughout, but Fossa just did enough to run out winners 2-09 v 2-07. Well done to the entire Fossa squad, young and not so, those present tonight and to those away, they all played their part in this victory. Well done also to the new management team who are off to a great start.

U13 BOYS: Currow 4-11 Fossa 5-06. Our U13s headed the short distance over to Currow to face the locals in Round 2 of the East Kerry League. It was a perfect evening for football and the fine playing surface allowed for a fantastic game of open play. Currow started the brighter and raced into an early 1-02 to no score lead, the low flying Ryanair flights overhead seemed to distract our lads! Fossa quickly got into their groove and smashed home 4 quick fire goals before half time to only trail by the bare minimum at half time on a score line of

2-07 to 4-00. The 2nd half was a dingdong encounter with the lead changing hands on several occasions. When Ryan Lynch scored Fossa's 5th goal it looked like we were on our way, but somehow Currow eked out 2 goals of their own in the last few minutes to win an absorbing contest by 2 points. The game was a credit to both sets of players who gave the large attendance a great night's entertainment of honest open football, a game that was superbly reffed by Kilcummin's John Purcell.

Kilcummin LGFA

LGFA: The LGFA are celebrating their 50th anniversary on Friday 26th July. To mark this special milestone Kilcummin LGFA cordially invites everyone to an “Evening of Golden Celebrations”. On this special evening, Kilcummin LGFA will remember our late Vice Chairperson Ger Healy, who passed away suddenly last March. R.I.P. As everyone is aware Ger was the backbone of Kilcummin LGFA, He was not only our leader and our mentor but our loyal friend. In recognition of his total devotion, dedication and commitment to Kilcummin LGFA, a special presentation of a memorial plaque will be made to the Healy Family that evening. Ger will always be fondly remembered by all in Kilcummin LGFA. His absence is profoundly felt but his spirit, positive energy and legacy continues to inspire us, and his invaluable contribution will be recognised and celebrated on the 26th July also. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis. Members of Kilcummin CCE have been invited to perform and no doubt their performance will get all our blood pumping and our feet tapping. Glenflesk GAA

SYMPATHY: The death of Micheál O'Donoghue on Sunday 30/06/24 in his 88th year brings to an end a lifetime of active involvement in the Glenflesk/ Barraduff community. Born in Droumnaharee, Glenflesk, Micheál qualified as a National Teacher spending his first year in Carlow before returning to his native parish in 1957 to take up a teaching position in Barraduff National School, a post he retained for the duration of his long career. A highly respected member of the community, Micheál nurtured the fledgling G.A.A. Club in its formative years, becoming Treasurer in 1959 and subsequently Secretary until

1967. With his perspicacious attributes he quickly realised that the future of the Club lay with its young people: mindful of this he set about organising under-14 and under-16 football teams which competed with other Clubs in East Kerry. Micheal's leadership qualities and honest endeavour proved to be very useful particularly in the early years of the Club. He was a key facilitator in the provision of the Club grounds at Curreal and he edited 'Glimpses from the Glen' in 2001, a booklet commemorating the golden jubilee of the foundation of the Club. In later years Micheál developed a keen interest in golf particularly at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. To paraphrase W.B. Yeats: Micheál was the steadfast stone in the midst of the swirling stream. Micheál is survived by his daughter, Siobhán and his siblings, Florence, Jerh, Joan and Peg. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

LGFA: U14 County League Division 6 Shield Final - Milltown/Castlemaine 5-2 Glenflesk 3-7. A goal right at the end proved the difference as Milltown/Castlemaine got the better of Glenflesk in an entertaining Division 6 Shield Final played in front of a enthralled crowd at Fitzgerald’s Stadium on Monday 1st of July. The girls gave everything and just didn’t have the luck needed at times to win. There is a bright future ahead for this team though, and they should be proud of their performance.

Kilcummin

KILCUMMIN RURAL DEVELOPMENT: It was with great sadness that people heard of the passing of Jerry Mangan of Kilbrean. Jerry was a loving generous soul. He had a deep appreciation of the fields and native woodland on his farm. When the wood walk was first proposed he was generous and enthusiastic in his response. He spoke fondly of the generations who used the path on their way to school or to Sunday Mass. Part of his legacy to us is that we and future generations can enjoy what he loved from his earliest days. Míle Buíochas Jerry. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis flaithiúil.

VACANCY: A Vacancy presently exists on the Kilcummin Rural Dev. C.E. Scheme for the position of maintenance/ground person for Mastergeeha F.C. This position is a development opportunity and no experience necessary. Please contact your Local Dep. of Social Protection employment services/Intreo office to check your eligibility. To apply please forward your C.V. & P.P.S. number to The Supervisor, Kilcummin Rural Dev. Office by post or email info@ kilcumminparish.com. For information contact Helen on 089 4756774.

APPRECIATION FOR FR. SEAN JONES: It is with great sadness that the very popular Fr. Sean Jones is leaving Killarney Pastoral Area to take up his new ministry as parish priest in Waterville on July 17th. We will miss his friendly presence, encouragement and gentleness in his priestly vocation. If you wish to make a contribution towards a gift of appreciation, you may do so by handing it into the Parish Office or the Post Office. Thanking you.

KILCUMMIN LOOKING GOOD: With the impending arrival of the Tidy Towns Adjudicator expected over the next few weeks, we would ask all householders to make a special effort outside their houses to ensure it is presented at its very best. Please ensure if you are a dog owner that you take on your responsibilities associated with dog fouling on footpaths and park. We appreciate and thank you for your assistance and co-operation.
