George Bernard Shaw honoured at Muckross hotel

The link between Killarney, one of Ireland’s greatest playwriters and a Hollywood blockbuster were celebrated at a local hotel on Wednesday.

The Muckross Park Hotel and Spa unveiled an oil painting of George Bernard Shaw on Wednesday. The painting, commissioned by the hotel, was created by Donegal-based artist Mark McFadden.

Wednesday would have been the legendary writers 167th birthday.

It is said that wrote parts of his play ‘Pygmalion’ at Muckross Park Hotel in 1913.

The play was the springboard for the screen play for the 1965 Hollywood blockbuster ‘My Fair Lady’.

The movie, a musical comedy, and which featured Aubrey Hepburn, won eight academy awards.
