Bishop Casey’s Buried Secrets

In an investigation conducted by RTÉ, in association with the Irish Mail on Sunday, the former CEO of The National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland, Ian Elliott, described Bishop Eamonn Casey as "a sexual predator". His comments were given in a documentary that was broadcast on RTÉ on Monday night.

Reporter Anne Sheridan examined the Catholic Church's handling of allegations against the former Bishop of Galway, Eamonn Casey, who died in 2017. 'Bishop Casey's Buried Secrets' included an interview with one of Bishop Casey’s accusers, his niece, Patricia Donovan. Speaking for the first time on camera, she claims that he first raped her at the age of five and that the sexual abuse continued for years.

Ian Elliott, the former CEO of the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Irish Catholic Church, who has direct knowledge of Patricia Donovan’s complaint against Bishop Casey, told the RTÉ / Irish Mail on Sunday investigation that he found her account of what she experienced “entirely credible”, describing Bishop Casey as, on balance of probabilities, “an offender, a sexual predator.

The fact of the matter is that individuals have come forward and spoken about… numerous sexual activities, some consensual, others not. Many involved very young people. That is wrong and there is no justification for that, and it should have been stopped… Those that have been distressed and hurt should be helped and supported by the Church. That is a major priority.”

Patricia Donovan told the documentary: “Some of the things he did to me, and where he did them… The horror of being raped by him when I was five, the violence. And it just carried on in that vein… He had no fear of being caught. He thought he could do what he liked, when he liked, how he liked… He was almost, like, incensed that I would dare fight against him, that I would dare try and hurt him, I would dare try and stop him... It didn’t make any difference.

In 2019, Galway Diocese informed reporter Anne Sheridan that it

had received just one allegation of child sexual abuse against Bishop Eamonn Casey. It has since confirmed that, in fact, it had records at that time of “five people who had complained of childhood sexual abuse against Bishop Casey.” These independent accusations related to alleged events in every Irish diocese where Bishop Casey worked.

€100,000 SETTLEMENT

Bishop Casey's Buried Secrets also revealed how the Limerick Diocese paid over €100,000 in settlement to one of Bishop Casey’s accusers after Casey’s death. The current Bishop of Limerick, Dr Brendan Leahy, who has access to documents relating to complaints made in his diocese says: “I express deep sorrow and regret to anyone who has been wounded by clerical abuse, including the people referred to in this documentary. They deserve our respect, belief and support. Without commenting on any specific allegation, I have no reason to disbelieve any of the allegations made.”

In an exceptional public statement issued to the documentary, the Vatican confirmed for the first time, that Bishop Casey was formally removed from public ministry in 2007, following “allegations” which, RTÉ has established, included his niece Patricia Donovan’s complaint of child sexual abuse. That restriction continued for the last ten years of his life but was never publicly disclosed in Bishop Casey’s lifetime.

VATICAN SANCTIONS VIOLATED

The RTÉ documentary also discovered evidence that Bishop Casey violated the Vatican’s sanctions on several occasions, presenting himself in public as a priest in good standing across several years. Galway Diocese has confirmed this, but stated that the late Bishop Martin Drennan, who was responsible for policing the restrictions, reprimanded Dr Casey whenever he was made aware of such breaches.

DPP DECIDED NOT TO PROSECUTE

In early 2006, the Irish Bishop announced that Eamonn Casey was moving back to Ireland from England to retire. By this stage, the Vatican had now received at least two allegations of child sexual abuse against Bishop Casey. Although the DPP decided not to prosecute him,

Church investigations were ongoing. After repeated requests for information, the Vatican has now issued an exceptional statement to RTÉ, confirming that, by 2006, following unspecified “allegations”, “Bishop Casey had been requested not to publicly exercise the ministry” and that this was “reiterated formally” a year later. The statement also revealed that “He was never reinstated… in spite of insistence from him and on his behalf” and “regardless of the outcome of the civil procedures.” When RTÉ requested clarification from Archbishop Charles Scicluna, the President of the Vatican department responsible for handling complaints of child sexual abuse, he replied that: “Cases concerning Bishops are reserved to the Holy Father personally and only the Secretariat of State would be in a position to share information.”

DENIED ALLIGATIONS

Bishop Casey consistently denied all the allegations of child sexual abuse made against him. Although all the complaints were reported to An Garda Síochána, he was never charged with, or prosecuted for, any sexual crimes. He was prepared to go to court to defend his reputation after two of his accusers brought civil cases against him.

Despite his resignation as Bishop of Galway in 1992, he remained a Bishop until his dying day and claimed his removal from ministry was unjust. The documentary hears from friends, colleagues and supporters, who still find it hard to believe the allegations made against him. However the Vatican has declined to say what investigative process was followed or whether the sanctions it imposed on Bishop Casey were punitive or precautionary.

Bishop Casey’s niece, Patricia Donovan, tells the documentary: “I feel so absolutely and completely and utterly betrayed by the Church I was brought up in.”

Former President of Ireland Mary McAleese was legal advisor to the Irish Bishops on the day the story broke in 1992 about Bishop Eamonn Casey’s affair with a young woman, Annie Murphy, with whom he had a child. She tells the RTÉ documentary: "He was very beloved and there are people who are prepared to forgive everything. But then, maybe, do they know everything?"

The 1hr 22min documentary is available to stream and watch on the RTÉ Player

Ballyfinnane community comes together for

Kieran

The close-knit community of Ballyfinnane is coming together to support one of their own, 9-year-old Kieran. Diagnosed with a brain tumor at just 6 years old, Kieran faces a long and challenging road to recovery.

Kieran loves being outdoors on the farm and playing with his friends. When he was just 6, he began to have peculiar falls, sometimes occurring up to three times in a single week. Concerned, his parents took him to the doctor, leading to a series of investigations. It was then that the family discovered Kieran had a brain tumour, and his falls were actually epileptic seizures.

Shortly after this diagnosis, Kieran came under the care of Mr. Darrach Crimmins, a neurosurgeon at CHI Temple Street. A biopsy confirmed Kieran had a Pilocytic Astrocytoma, a brain tumor that occurs most commonly in children and young adults. From that point on, Kieran was closely monitored with MRI scans every three months.

Just after his 8th birthday, Kierans parents noticed that he was walking strangely and he had stopped using his right hand. An emergency MRI revealed that his tumour had grown, causing paralysis on his right side. Kieran underwent emergency surgery to remove part of the tumour. However, due to the tumour's location, it was impossible to remove it completely without risking permanent damage to his motor function and sight on his right side.

After surgery, Kieran faced a long road to recovery. During the rehabilitation phase, he had to relearn how to walk and complete everyday tasks. He worked incredibly hard and underwent extensive physical therapy to reach his current state.

Since then, Kieran has continued to be monitored with MRI scans every three months. In October, the family received

the distressing news that Kieran's tumour had grown back. The surgeon informed them that Kieran could benefit from a new piece of surgical equipment that allows for keyhole surgery on the brain.

This less invasive procedure would mean quicker recovery times and a reduced risk of infection, offering a significant advantage for Kieran and other children in similar situations.

Kieran and his family are from Ballyfinnane, a small rural community in Kerry with just one school, one community hall, and one pub, The Shanty Bar. Despite its size, the community is well known for it's heart, kindness, and togetherness. When some community members learnt of the family's situation, they wanted to help. Understanding the critical need for funds for the neurosurgery department at CHI Temple Street, they have decided to organise a fundraiser: "Together We Can for CHI Temple Street."

Organisers are calling on the people of Killarney and beyond to visit The Shanty Bar for a day of family fun and giving on August 31. Activities will include pig on a spit, kids' activities, live music, raffles, and lots of spot prizes. Tickets can be purchased locally, and all proceeds will go to the Neurosurgery Department at CHI Temple Street.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week Kieran's parents said "your support means the world to us and to many families facing similar battles. Let’s come together on August 31 and make this event a success for Kieran and all the children who need our help".

New sponsors come on board for Kilcummin GAA

Keane’s Jewellers have come on board as the sponsors of the new Kilcummin GAA Club training jerseys.

Susan Moriarty, manager of the Killarney branch on High Street, lives in Kilcummin and she said she is happy to be able to support her local club in its endeavours. “We are very happy to be in a position to sponsor Kilcummin and we wish them the very best of luck in all competitions

for the coming season,” she said. Kilcummin GAA Club was founded in 1910 and it has grown in size and stature. Club facilities now include three pitches, a state-of-the-art gym and a walking track. The senior men’s team are competing at intermediate level while the senior ladies are competing at junior level in Kerry. The club has a vibrant underage structure with teams for boys and girls in all age groups from under six to under 16.

Michael Fassbender to star in Soderbergh's high-stakes spy drama "Black Bag"

Killarney native Michael Fassbender is set to star in director Steven Soderbergh's upcoming spy thriller "Black Bag," slated for release in March 2025. The film promises to be a high-octane mystery, which is still shrouded in secrecy.

Details about the plot are scarce, but reports suggest "Black Bag" will delve into the world of international espionage. Fassbender will share the screen with another Academy Award nominee, Cate Blanchett. The impressive cast also includes Regé-Jean Page ("Bridgerton"), Naomie Harris ("James Bond" franchise), and Pierce Brosnan, another former James Bond himself. Fassbender is no stranger to intense roles. He's garnered acclaim for his portrayals of complex characters in films like "X-Men: First Class" (Magneto), "12 Years a Slave" (Edwin Epps), and "Steve

Jobs" (the titular tech mogul). "Black Bag" marks a reunion for Fassbender and Soderbergh, who previously collaborated on the psychological horror film "Presence," expected for release later this year. With a talented cast, a renowned director, and Fassbender's captivating presence, "Black Bag" is poised to be a must-watch for fans of thrillers in 2025.

Sem mourn the loss of former teacher Mary O'Donoghue

The St. Brendan’s College community is this week mourning the sudden passing of Mary O'Donoghue, a beloved former teacher at St. Brendan's College.

In a short statement on their Facebook page on Wednesday the school said, “We are deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of our former colleague, friend, and teacher, Mary O'Donoghue. Mary taught Irish and French in St Brendans College from 1992 until her retirement in 2022. Mary was a much loved teacher and friend to us all in St Brendans, and we are deeply saddened at her untimely passing. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.”

Further information sought on St Finan's Hospital site

According to correspondence released to Radio Kerry under FOI, the LDA confirmed to Kerry County Council that it has requested further information from the HSE about the St Finan’s site as part of its due diligence process.

The Land Development Agency (LDA) is seeking additional information from the HSE regarding the former St Finan's Hospital site in Killarney. The LDA is currently reviewing the site for potential

development as part of its next tranche of developable public lands.

The HSE-owned hospital closed its doors in 2012 and has since fallen into disrepair. Despite its deteriorating interior, the building's structure remains largely intact. However, refurbishment costs are estimated to be around €100 million, a figure deemed too high by Kerry County Council. Local councillors have long advocated for the site's redevelopment into housing.

JulyFest at Killarney Races delivered a fun-filled programme, fantastic crowds, spectacular views, top-class racing and an atmosphere that was not to be missed!

Monday kicked off the festival with lots of locals arriving at the track. Father and son Aidan and Joseph O’Brien were rewarded for the trip to Killarney, training four of the seven winners on the card for their independent training establishments. Another family affair also graced the winners’ enclosure when jockey Andrew Slattery rode Independent Expert to victory for his Father Andy Slattery Snr who trained the winner of the Torc Mountain Handicap. In the trainer’s post-race interview, Slattery suggested her next outing could be at the Galway Races “She is fit and well now and tomorrow morning I’ll enter her in a Galway festival handicap on the Tuesday. If she gets in, we’ll take our chances and if you’re not in you can’t win!”

Tuesday evening offered a good evening for punters with five of the seven races won by favourites, leaving the bookmakers licking their wounds on Ross Road, with a good spread of winners from all the top yards represented and a double on the card for Meath trainer Gordon Elliott who saddled the last two winners on the card.

Top jockey Rachael Blackmore got the upper hand on Red Glory, winning the KPH Construction Handicap Hurdle for trainer Henry de Bromhead in fine style, at 4/1

joint favourite.

Last but by no means least, the final day of JulyFest was an extraordinary day, both on and off the track. Ladies and gents from all across the country arrived in style to take part in the Lee Strand Best Dressed fashion event. Celebrity judges Jake Carter and Karen Byrne had a tough challenge whittling down their final sections in each competition.

Carly Murphy from Kenmare, was the lucky lady who claimed the much-coveted Lee Strand Best Dressed Lady title. The winning look was a stunning white suit from Phoenix V which she had purchased for her son’s christening, paired with a beautiful headpiece from Kerry

designer Carol Kennelly. Carly complemented the chic look with a gold bag and Valentino shoes that her husband bought her a few years back as a birthday present.

Delighted with her win and array of prizes including a specially commissioned crystal vase and a trip to Paris for two, Carly commented, “It’s all a bit surreal. I have never won anything and today has been so lovely. All the ladies, Lee Strand and Killarney Races have been wonderful, there is such a sense of community here. Winning has given me such a confidence boost after having two small children. I can’t believe it, I am over the moon”

In the gent’s category Sean O'Leary from Killarney came out on top with his winning look after carefully putting together some classic pieces from his wardrobe showcasing sustainability and style in spades. His prize included a specially commissioned crystal decanter and a trip for two to the city of Milan.

It was also his first ride back in over two-months as he returned from injury, much to the delight of the crowd. KIA to power Kíla on main stage

Eats + Beats Festival, which is taking place next Sunday August 4, has announced an innovative partnership with Kia Motors.

Kia is the Sustainable Transport Partner for the one day festival and will support the event by powering the main music stage using Vehicle-to-Device (V2D) technology. The stage, which will be graced by some well-known acts such as Kila, Two Time Polka, Kila and Mega Trad will be using Kia’s Vehicle-to-Device technology which allows electric vehicle owners to power external electronic devices in various environments using the vehicles battery as a generator. V2D allows 80% of the maximum battery capacity to be used to power external devices, which is enough power for a family of four, for up to five days, or in this case, a festival main stage for a full day.

The announcement re-enforces the festival organisers commitment to sustainability and creating a festival which is kind to the earth. The festival has already committed to 100% biodegradable food

containers, reusable beer cups and a free shuttle bus to and from Killarney town which will reduced the amount of car journeys being made. In addition, almost all of our festival decor will be made up of pre-used materials that will be given a new lease of life.

These items which either originate from recycled plastic or plant-based materials are just one measure being undertaken by the brand on their journey towards Carbon Neutrality.

Natterjack released in Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara, Ciarraí

Speaking at the release Minister Noonan said: "I’m delighted to be here today to release the final batch of this year’s toadlets, back into their natural habitat within these beautiful sand dunes at Inch.

This has really become an annual event for nature lovers in the Kingdom, and is such a great example of science and the local community working together to halt the decline of this iconic species, unique to Castlemaine and Castlegregory."

This is also the first time for our precious toadlets to be released into Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara, Ciarraí, Ireland’s newest National Park. All of us hope that the Páirc, with its spectacular sand dunes here at Inch is a place where they can continue to breed and thrive.”

Natterjacks are particularly vulnerable to predators and also depend on shallow ponds for their survival at an early stage of their development. The mortality of natterjack spawn and tadpoles in the wild can be greater than 90%. NPWS has been working with Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium over the past seven years to explore if captive rearing can be used to boost the natterjack population at Inch. Every year NPWS staff collect toad spawn and/or tadpoles from Inch in April and May and bring them to Oceanworld where they are reared in special holding tanks until they reach metamorphosis. In July and August they are released back into the wild by NPWS staff. The captive rearing programme at Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium has reduced

the mortality rate of this endangered species to less than 25%. 2,500 toadlets have been released back into Inch this year, including those released today. The release at Inch follows the establishment of Ireland’s eighth National Park, and first Marine Park – Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara, Ciarraí. The sand dune system at Inch is one of the largest and finest in Europe, and has long been recognised as one of the most important breeding sites in the country for Natterjack Toads. It is designated under Castlemaine Harbour Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area, and is surrounded by the Castlemaine Harbour Nature Reserve.

Kelly secures membership of key EU committees

Seán Kelly, MEP for Ireland South and Leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament, has secured influential positions on three of the Parliament's largest committees.

Kelly will serve as a full member of the Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committee and as a substitute on both the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) and Foreign Affairs (AFET) Committees.

"I was honoured to get such a high vote in the election, but now it's time to meet the expectations of the electorate and get to work," said Kelly. "This term, I will sit on three of the Parliament's largest committees, each of which are of key importance to Ireland."

Kelly highlighted the importance of the ITRE Committee in achieving Europe's Net Zero goals. "In this coming term, I will be retaking my seat on the Industry, Research and Energy Committee. We are at a critical juncture where industrial growth, technological advancement, and energy efficiency must converge to meet our Net Zero goals."

Kelly also underscored the importance of having an Irish voice in the ENVI and AFET committee. "The Environment

Committee shapes a substantial portion of the legislation that comes before the Parliament, making it one of the most active and influential committees. I felt it was important to sit on the Foreign Affairs Committee too as it is important to have an Irish perspective on the global stage, advocating for policies that not only protect our security and indeed energy security but also enhance our economic resilience and while upholding European values of human rights and justice abroad."

Michael Healy Rae concerned with delays to road works

Kerry counsellors were made aware this week that Kerry County Council were notified by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) that they are currently reviewing planned expenditure for 2024 against the overall budget for National Roads, Active Travel Schemes and Greenways. Until the review is complete Kerry County Council have been instructed not to proceed to tender with two projects in the Killarney Municipal District.

“I am particularly concerned as to what this means for the future of the two Killarney Municipal District projects - N72 Killalee Pavement Scheme; N72 Lackabane Pavement Scheme. This is a direct result of the reduced amount of funding for national roadway projects given by the Department to the TII at the beginning of this year and furthermore, the Departments preference to increase funding for Active Travel Schemes and Greenways” Healy Rae said.

The TII advised however, that work may continue on the preparation of pavement asset repair and renewal reports and detailed designs as well as tender documents for these schemes. Once the review of planned expenditure has been completed, TII anticipate being in a position to provide further information/clarification in relation to the progression of the four schemes.

Pa Daly calls for extension of CAMHS redress scheme

Sinn Féin TD for Kerry, Pa Daly, was commenting on the government’s proposed new Mental Health Act which Minister for State Mary Butler brought to cabinet this week.

Teachta Daly said: “Sinn Féin repeatedly called for the regulation of CAMHS by the Mental Health Commission, which the bill reportedly implements. This is an important step and I commend the efforts of campaigners.

“Whilst we do need to see the details of any proposals, there are other areas which the bill or the government could address. Most especially, this includes the extension of the redress scheme.

“As I have outlined before, former patients who received apologies or some form of admission of liability from the HSE are not eligible for the scheme. This includes cases in South Kerry where treatment commenced prior to July of 2016, as well as all of the North Kerry cases.

“To enable litigation and settlement of cases, the affected persons need to source independent medical expert reports, costing up to €3500 per report. The redress scheme being widened would help to address this.

“The legislative action the government is promising is important, but material improvements in the lives of those affected by the CAMHS scandal must be made at the same time. Prevention and justice must go hand in hand.”

Councillor calls for VAT reduction amid "slump in visitor numbers"

The Hospitality Sector in Kerry is in crisis this summer, with a major slump in visitor numbers arriving in the county, according to the Cathaoirleach of Kenmare Municipal District, Councillor Michael Cahill.

The Fianna Fáil man is calling for major supports to be put in place by the Government, to save the tourism industry here.

“In recent years our tourism industry has taken huge hits from Brexit, Covid and more recently the refugee crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The British find it more difficult to visit Ireland since Brexit, the Covid-19 Pandemic closed us completely, with a shortage of bed nights due to the need to house Ukrainian war refugees, and the US Presidential Election which has prevented many Americans from coming to Ireland this year, visitor numbers are way below normal levels” stated Councillor Cahill.

“The poor summer weather we are experiencing plus the cost of living crisis and the cost of electricity and car hire are also major factors. All of this is having a hugely negative affect on, not alone on accommodation providers, but also on restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, supermarkets, petrol stations, etc, and of course all of their suppliers” said the Rossbeigh based Councillor.

“I am calling for the immediate suspension of any increase in Rates and for the return of the 9% VAT rate for the Hospitality Sector, and for other business supports to be put in place as soon as possible, if we are to stem the out of control spate of business closures in the county,” stated Councillor Cahill.

"I am receiving reports from all around the county that visitor numbers are well back this year and that businesses are struggling everywhere, and we must do everything humanly possible to help them through this most difficult period," added the Fianna Fáil Councillor.

PAINT LIKE A PRO: HOW TO REPAINT KITCHEN CABINETS

Kitchen due a refresh? A lick of paint can instantly transform your kitchen and extend the lifetime of your cabinets. At Pat McDonnell Paints, we help customers achieve a full makeover at a fraction of the cost of a new kitchen.

STEP 1: PREP

As with all painting projects, preparation is key to achieving an attractive and long-lasting finish.

Firstly, protect the surfaces you don’t want to paint! Empty cupboards and drawers and remove all handles. Place dust sheets to protect your floor.

Over the years, grease, dirt and dust can build up on your cabinets. These wreak havoc on paintwork so it’s important to fully clean the units before picking up a paintbrush. Household cleaners leave a film, so we always recommend a degreaser or sugar soap.

Mask hinges and where the cabinetry meets walls and tiles. Deltec Gold Masking Tape ensures sharp lines and zero residue.

Tip: Always clean before sanding, as sanding can compress any dirt into your cabinets!

STEP 2: SAND

To improve paint adhesion, lightly sand your cabinets with fine-grade sandpaper. Once done, wipe down cabinets with methylated spirits to remove any trace of dust. Allow to dry.

STEP 3: FIX

Apply a quality filler to any imperfections (holes, cracks etc.) with a wet filling knife. We like using the Prestonett Filler Range – ask in-store for the right filler for your cabinets. Once dry, lightly sand and wipe with a clean damp cloth.

STEP 4: PRIME

Apply one coat of primer. The primer you use will depend on your cabinets, so check with one of our team for the best primer for your project. Leave plenty of time for the primer to fully dry, check the tin for drying times, we often advise leaving it overnight if you can. (Plus, it’s a great excuse to order a well-earned takeaway!)

Tip: For most kitchen cabinets, we rec-

ommend using Ralston All-Primer. Not only can this primer be tinted to the colour of your choice, but it is also biobased and kinder to our environment.

STEP 5: PAINT

For a smooth, durable topcoat, we recommend one coat of quality paint from the Ralston Aqua range in the colour and finish of your choice. Cut-in and apply your paint with a good quality brush or roller. Leave to dry fully before reaffixing cabinet doors.

Tip: If you feel a second coat is needed, it is important to allow each coat enough time to fully dry before applying the next coat. Don’t be tempted to put the cabinets back too quickly and risk an accidental smudge!

Check out Education and Training Options outside of CAO

Pathways to careers and courses open to school leavers and adults returning to education are extensive and varied.

They have been developed to provide greater choice, access and flexibility to learners and are designed to meet skills needs in the workplace which has changed considerably in recent years and will continue to evolve. These education and training routes are available across multiple sectors, suit a variety of learning styles and provide progression routes onto further qualifications or directly into the workplace. A key feature of such pathways is that entry is not based on CAO points and applications remain open at this stage of the year.

POST LEAVING CERTIFICATE COURSES

Colleges of Further Education (FE) are still accepting applications for courses in a huge variety of subject areas including business, ICT, social care, childcare, law, beauty therapy, art and design, applied science, healthcare, law, engineering, multimedia, sport and much more. These courses provide students with skills to go directly into the workplace and QQI FET/FETAC qualifications which allow them to progress onto colleges and universities here in Ireland, the UK and Europe. To check out the full range of PLC courses available and to apply, check out www.fetchcourses.ie . For those who are interested in progression routes onto Higher Education in Ireland, take a look at QQI-FET Applicant section of www.cao.ie . Individual FE college websites also have lots of information available on entry requirements, course content and career options. Applica-

tions are open up to early September but the advice is to apply sooner rather than later as spaces on popular courses fill up well in advance of that.

JOINT TERTIARY DEGREES

This exciting option which became available for the first time in 2023 allows students to start their degree in a FE college or local Education & Training Board (ETB) and after one or two years transfer to a partner Higher Education Institution (University) to complete the degree. Currently there are 29 degrees on offer nationwide across sectors and include nursing, business, IT, science, engineering and social work. For further details on courses, entry requirements and to apply see - https://nto.hea.ie

APPRENTICESHIPS

The number and variety of apprenticeships has been growing steadily in recent years and there are currently 75 different apprenticeships available across a huge variety of sectors including construction, arboriculture, electrical, biopharma, ICT, finance, insurance, logistics & supply chain, sales, agriculture, hairdressing, engineering, hospitality, healthcare, mechanics, auctioneering and recruitment. Apprentices are also paid while training and the ‘earn while you learn’ model is very popular with trainees, who can apply for apprenticeships year round as they become available. Applicants need to secure an apprenticeship through an employer who supports the ‘on-the-job’ aspect of the training, with the ‘off-the-job’ training

provided by ETBs nationwide. For more details see www.apprenticehip.ie

TRAINEESHIPS

Traineeships are a very attractive option for students who are in interested in work-based training in areas where there is an identified skills need and combine learning in the classroom and experience in the workplace to improve employment outcomes for participants. There are over 75 traineeships available nationally across a variety of industries including business, health and social care, constructions, engineering, transport and logistics, finance, hospitality, fashion and beauty, ICT and more. Traineeships start at various times during the year. More details can be found on https://www.solas.ie/programmes/ traineeship/ also from the local Education and Training Boards (ETBs).

NATIONAL LEARNING NETWORK

The National Learning Network (NLN) offers specialist training, courses and support services for students and adults who need extra support to progress in their education or into the workplace. This includes young people students who may not want to, or be equipped to, access traditional post-school pathways. A key aspect of the NLN is a welcoming and supportive environment, small class sizes and the flexibility for students to learn a pace which suits their needs. More information can be found on www.nln.ie

The program will showcase performanc-

es by Jimmy and Siobhan O'Brien and musicians Sonny Riordan and Jack Leahy. Additionally, J.J. O'Shea is composing a musical suite narrating the story of Muckross House, commissioned by the Trustees.

In the Muckross Gardens, NPWS Divi-

sional Manager Eamonn Meskel highlights the transformation from an overgrown park to the world-class gardens seen today. Marketing and Muckross Craft Shop Manager Paul Morgan shares the success of Mucros caps and scarves in the US market.

The challenges posed by rhododendron and deer numbers will be discussed with Conservation Ranger Tim Cahillane and NPWS Director General Niall O Donnchu.

Conservation Ranger Mary Sheehan details the cuckoo project, revealing the birds' journey from France to Ireland. Patricia O'Hare, the Trustees' librarian, emphasised the need for dedicated library, classroom, and exhibition spaces to support research and education at Muckross House. Catch the full story this Saturday with Frank Lewis at 9.00 a.m. on Radio Kerry.

‘Save Democracy’: Biden reveals the motives for stepping down

In a televised address from the oval office last night, Joe Biden revealed he needed to end his campaign in a bid to save US democracy, endorsing US Vice-President Kamala Harris.

Mr Biden addressed his country from the White House last night, detailing his presidency “merited a second term” but that “nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy”. Mr Biden, 81, has come under scrutiny recently from opponents and allies over the stamina of a second term, with some shaky moments from the oldest President in US history during the current Presidential race. However, Mr Biden, alongside wife Jill, son, Hunter,

and daughter, Ashley, has displayed his love for his position in the office, stating that “he loves his country more” and that he has “decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation.”

“That is the best way to unite our nation,” he added.

Biden continued his praise for US democracy, saying “The great thing about America is here, kings and dictators do not rule. The people do. History is in your hands.

The power is in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands.” Mr Biden did not mention any links towards mounting pressures he had received from opponents and allies and the White House has denied the weighing factor of the Presidents well-being, declaring that the

exit was “not about his health.” Mr Biden also stated that he will “finish the job for the American people” before the end of his term in January, calling Ms Harris an “experienced, tough, capable” partner." Mr Biden is the first sitting president not to seek re-election since Lyndon Johnson in 1968.

Ex-president and opponent Donald Trump is already online to voice opinions over Biden and Harris, calling the President’s speech “barely understandable, and so bad!” Ms Harris has already hit the ground running however, addressing various groups for their help in the election, and receiving over $81 million in donations, the largest single-day fundraising haul for any candidate in US history.

Race is on to contain 1.4m litre oil spill

A Filipino tanker carrying 1.4 million litres of industrial fuel oil has sunk off Manila, with an oil spill stretching several kilometres.

The tanker capsized and sank off Manila Bay in the early hours, with strong waves and high winds hampering response efforts. “We were able to rescue 16 out of 17 crew, one is missing” Transport Secretary Jaime Bautista told a briefing. Four of the rescued are receiving medical treatment. It is noted that an oil spill stretching about 3.7km was being carried by a “strong current” in an easterly direction. It is believed that the vessel’s sinking happened during a seasonal monsoon and Typhoon Gaemi’s heavy rainfall, which has bombarded Manila and surrounding locations in recent days.

The spill is currently being tracked in an effort to be contained by various environmental agencies. A similar incident occurred in February 2023, where a fuel tanker carrying 800,000 litres of oil capsized, leaving a spill that critically damaged hundreds of kilometres of life-diverse water, devastating the fishing and tourism industries.

Hairdressers not getting a fair cut

The Irish Hairdressers Federation (IHF) is calling on the government to reinstate the 9% VAT rate for the hairdressing industry.

The group argues that the current economic climate, coupled with rising costs, is putting immense pressure on salons across the country.

The IHF contends that the return to the reduced VAT rate is essential for the survival of many hairdressing businesses.

Increased energy costs, rising wages, and the overall economic downturn have significantly impacted the industry, and the federation believes that restoring the 9% VAT rate would provide much-needed relief.

Lisa Eccles of the Irish Hairdressers Federation, said: “We call on Government to freeze on further labour market policy measures that have a direct impact on our members.”

Ms Eccles added: “Some of our members have simply felt unable to continue their business and livelihood and have chosen to close their doors. At a time when the world’s energy costs are dropping, many of our members are baffled as to the high costs of energy which they have to absorb on a daily basis. We call on Government to take immediate action and provide extra support to salon owners across the country.”

RTE’s funding of €725m declared “not a reward” for mismanagement

The Government has agreed guaranteed funding of €725 million for the crisis-inflicted broadcasting company and has denied claims of ‘false reward’ and ‘the golden envelope’.

This decision has followed a year of governance and financial scandals which further propelled a long trend in declining TV licence revenue. Rival commercial broadcaster Virgin Media has criticised this Governmental decision, claiming it’s a “reward for inefficiency and all-round bad practice.” RTE director-general Kevin Bathurst dismissed the comments, saying that new procedures had been put in place to "make sure past mistakes don’t happen again,” claiming that “the funding was a reward for dealing with previous bad practice and setting out a new strategy”. RTE is ready to receive €225 million next year which will rise to €240 million in 2026 and €260 million by 2027. When questioned about the integrity of the

companies licence issues, Mr Bakhurst stated the organisation has a “moral responsibility” to demonstrate to the public that it is worth paying for.

Labour Senator Marie Sherlock, speaking on RTE’s Morning Ireland, has rejected that the funding was ‘a golden envelope’ and that the support was necessary in public service broadcasting. Sherlock has described the funding as “a sticking plaster” without any long-term vision. “I think there is an overwhelming sense that we have a sticky plaster now for the next three years, but there's no long term vision, no concrete vision for how public service broadcasting is going to be funded into the future. And I think there's a fundamental problem with that.”

Sherlock has addressed the risk of losing over 400 jobs with RTE, stating that it is in the plan for RTE to become a smaller organisation over the next five years. “I don’t believe that this is any sort of golden envelope” she added

The size of dinosaurs may have just changed forever

According to new scientific research, the Tyrannosaurus Rex could have been 70% heavier and 25% longer than previously imagined.

Conducted by Dr Mallon and Dr David Hone of Queen Mary University London, new computer-modelling studies have changed the outlook on the iconic T-Rex. The study assessed and compared the T-Rex with living alligators, chosen due to their large size and close resemblance to the dinosaurs. These

Paris to ignite Olympic flame this Friday

The world's sporting stage is set to come alive as the Paris 2024 Olympic Games officially kick off this Friday. Athletes from across the globe will converge on the City of Lights to compete for the ultimate prize in sports.

The opening ceremony, a highly anticipated spectacle, is set to take place on the Seine River, offering a unique and unforgettable experience for athletes and spectators alike. Paris has transformed itself into a sporting metropolis, with state-of-the-art venues and a renewed focus on sustainability. With over 10,000 athletes competing in 32 sports, the Games promise to be a

thrilling showcase of human athleticism. From the iconic Stade de France to the newly constructed aquatic center, the venues are ready to host the world's best. There is a lot of excitement building for Team Ireland this year. While the competition will be fierce, there are several Irish athletes who have the potential to bring home medals.

One of Ireland's brightest hopes is swimmer Daniel Wiffen. The Down native has been in exceptional form, claiming gold medals in both the 800m and 1500m freestyle at the World Championships. With his impressive performances, Wiffen is undoubtedly Ireland's best bet for gold in the pool.

Ireland's golfing duo, Leona Maguire and Shane Lowry, will also be carrying the nation's hopes. Maguire, with her consistent performances on the LPGA Tour, is a strong contender for a medal. Lowry, while facing stiff competition, has shown he can compete at the highest level and could surprise many. In track and field, Irish eyes and beyond will be on Rhasidat Adeleke who is undoubtedly Ireland's golden hope for the Paris Olympics. Her recent Diamond League victory in Monaco solidified her status as a serious medal contender. Beyond swimming, golf, and track, Ireland has the usual strong contingent in rowing and boxing. Kellie Harrington,

scientists now believe the dinosaur could have weighed over 15 tonnes instead of 8.8, and measured 15 metres long rather than 12. Dr Mallon detailed that scientists “really have no idea from the fossil record about the absolute sizes they might have reached. It’s fun to think about a 15 tonne T-Rex, but the implications are also interesting from an ecological perspective.”

The study factored in population size, growth rate, lifespan and other variables to document a reliable and noteworthy assessment. With this new technology, the search for the largest creature that ever existed (one of 2.5 billion lifeforms) may come easier, and may be 70% larger than the current largest-known.

“Some isolated bones and pieces certainly hint at still larger individuals than for which we currently have skeletons”, says Dr Hone.

the reigning Olympic champion, is undoubtedly Ireland's top medal hope in the sport. Her gold medal win in Tokyo solidified her status as a national icon, and she will be looking to defend her title in Paris. Other Irish boxers with medal potential include Aoife O'Rourke and Michaela Walsh. Both have shown exceptional talent and have consistently performed well on the international stage.

Ireland has a rich tradition in rowing, and the country has produced numerous world-class rowers over the years. While the sport is highly competitive, there are still hopes for Irish rowers to make a podium finish. Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy have been a dominant force in rowing. With multiple world and Olympic titles between them, they will be Ireland's primary medal hopes once again.

Visually impaired Grace to experience rally co-driving

A visually impaired Kerry girl is to get the chance to experience the thrill of a rally car passenger ride thanks to a Vision Sports Ireland initiative.

The Vision Sports Ireland Zero Limits Track Day returns to Mondello Park on Tuesday and Wednesday. This unique event provides blind and vision-impaired participants with an extraordinary opportunity to drive a dual-controlled road car around the Mondello Park circuit in the morning. In the afternoon, participants will experience

the thrill of being a rally co-driver as they sit in for passenger laps around the track.

Grace O’Sullivan from Firies returned to Mondello Park again on Wednesday after getting her first taste of rallying driving at the Zero Limits Track Day last year.

The Milltown Presentation Secondary School pupil has a rare condition called Stargardt disease.

“Participants get an extraordinary opportunity to drive dual control cars on the Mondello track in the morning and in the afternoon, they experience the thrill of being rally co-drivers,” her mother Mary

explained.

“This would not be possible without the support of all the volunteer rally drivers who travel from all over Ireland and beyond with their cars.

“For Grace or anyone in a similar situation, this is an amazing opportunity.

“Some people would never sit behind the wheel only for this event.”

“It also teaches anyone with a visual impairment that nothing is impossiblethere are no limits or no barriers just because you have an impairment.

“It is a very emotional day. If there is

something you want to do then there is a way around.”

Grace's hero, Paralympian Jason Smyth, who also suffers from the rare disease that is said to affect one in 10,000 people, is a Zero Limits Track Day ambassador. Grace met the five-time Gold medallist at Mondello Park last year.

Rallying runs in the family too; her aunt Siobhan’s husband, Stephen O’Connor, is a well-known local rally driver and member of Kerry Motor Club.

One of the main organisers of the event is Mayo woman Sara McFadden, a senior official with Vision Sports Ireland. She made history when she became Ireland’s first visually impaired rally navigator when she and her dad competed in the Imokilly Rally in Cork in July 2018. Vision Sports Ireland Zero Limits Track Day is run in partnership with Motorsport Ireland, Sports Ireland and the Windsor Motor Group.

Ladies Day all-day celebrations at Café du Parc

A sparkling evening of celebration awaited attendees of last week’s Killarney Races’ Ladies Day as Café du Parc teamed up with Taittinger to host an exclusive event.

The full-day event began at the racecourse, where the vibrant bar and cafe hosted its first-ever pop-up tent. Guests enjoyed Taittinger champagne, Valdo Bio Prosecco, Valdo Floral Rose, and bespoke cocktails in an oasis of greenery and florals. Attendees sipped on effervescent bubbles from the French champagne house while special guest appearances were made from best-dressed judges, Jake Carter and Karen Byrne. Promising a fittingly post-event finale for the social event of the season, the popular Killarney hangout laid on bubbles, bites and beats. Among the guests were Aidan O'Mahony and his wife

Denise Healy; Lucy Butler; and Annette O'Brien all who toasted the day with a curated selection of premium Taittinger champagnes: Brut Réserve; Prestige Rosé; and Nocturne.

Guests also tucked into colourful trays of Monkfish Tacos, Gambas Pil-Pil, and Café du Parc Croquettes paired perfectly with race-inspired cocktails including the Rhubart Trot and Pink Canter.

A special trio rendition performance from violinist Nicole Lonergan, dynamic percussionist Darragh O’Rourke and DJ Steven Howard created an electric atmosphere that continued late into the night.

How to leave your job

An unusual topic for this week’s column! One of my clients has recently been offered and accepted a new role. It’s great news for them and they are very excited at the idea of the new challenge.

BUT they are concerned about leaving their current role. They have been in their role for 3 years and are embedded into the firm and the firm are in invested in them. The reason for the move – lack of growth and opportunity.

When you work in an environment like that, leaving can be very difficult – you are invested in the firm, the culture is great, you feel a sense of loyalty to the firm and the people. BUT it is time to move on. So how do you approach this?

Firstly, check your notice period and then prepare a letter of resignation –try to make it a bit more than here’s my resignation and my leaving date is XX – perhaps thank the firm for the opportunities that you have had and how much you have enjoyed your time there.

Then I suggest you go and see whoever you report into. Explain that you have been offered a new role and have accepted it – that you have prepared a formal letter of resignation BUT you wanted to tell them in person. This will be appreciated. Undoubtedly, they

will be disappointed that you are leaving, and you may receive some form of counteroffer. This column is short, so I won’t cover how to deal with that. Once you have formally resigned, you will have to work your notice period. Sometimes firms will agree an early release but let’s assume they don’t. Notice periods are difficult, you want to start your new role and have lost interest in your current role – you might start treading water and not really doing anything. Try not to get into this mindset!

You will need to begin handing over your work to colleagues – do this professionally – people will remember how you do this and if you do it badly that’s all they will remember you for! Finally, the exit interview. This will probably be with HR. Prepare for it and engage with the process. People often use it as an opportunity to vent every frustration they ever had with the firm. If you feel like this, I recommend you prepare some honest and constructive feedback – and not an emotion-fuelled rant! Any message you are trying to communicate will get lost in the rant. If you have any questions on this or any other career related issue, please don’t hesitate to contact me on teresa@meetyourcareercoach or 085 169 3541 or follow me on Instagram and Facebook @meetyourcareercoach

Club season gets up and running

Senior and Intermediate Club Football Championships begin this weekend

After waiting patiently on the sidelines throughout the intercounty season, club footballers will get their chance to shine this weekend as the 2024 Kerry Senior and Intermediate Club Championships get up and running with games right across the county.

The action gets underway this evening (Friday) with the Intermediate clash of promotion hopefuls Kerins O’Rahillys and Laune Rangers at Austin Stack Park. Throw-in at the famous Tralee venue is at 7.30pm. (All other matches this weekend will be played on Saturday. Sunday is being kept free to allow players, officials and supporters to watch the All-Ireland

football final between Armagh and Galway.)

Rahillys and Rangers find themselves in a testing Group 2 alongside Listowel Emmets and Kilcummin, who will go toe to toe in Castleisland on Saturday (7pm).

One of the pre-tournament favourites, Austin Stacks, take on Tralee rivals John Mitchels in Strand Road at 4pm, while fellow Group 1 sides Glenbeigh/Glencar and An Ghaeltacht meet in Keel at 6pm.

In Group 3, last year’s beaten finalists Fossa go up against Beaufort in the Fitzgerald Stadium at 5pm, and Ballydonoghue face Castleisland Desmonds

in Brosna at 7pm.

Group 4 has a distinctly East Kerry feel to it with three of the four teams hailing from the district. Glenflesk play the Killarney Legion in Spa at 7pm while Gneeveguilla and St Mary’s do battle in Killorglin at 6.30pm.

The Senior Club Championship takes on a slightly different appearance in 2024 now that traditional Tralee powerhouses Stacks and Rahillys have both been relegated. County League Division 1 champions Dr Crokes and 2023 club champions

Dingle might be the front runners on paper and there will be great interest in their opening round encounter at Austin Stack Park (7pm). That match forms part of a double header with the other Group 2 tie between new boys Milltown/Castlemaine and Na Gaeil (5pm).

In Group 1, Spa play Templenoe in Glenflesk at 6.30pm and Rathmore take on Kenmare Shamrocks at the Fitzgerald Stadium at 7pm.

The Round 2 and Round 3 fixtures in the Senior and Intermediate Championships will be decided based on the results of Round 1.

The top two teams from each group in the Senior Championship will advance to the semi-finals and the top two teams from each group in the Intermediate Championship will go through to the quarters.

Determined Kerry book another date with destiny

Ní Chonchúir goal sees ladies through to third All-Ireland final in three years

LGFA ALL-IRELAND SENIOR SEMI-FINAL

Kerry 1 - 8 | Armagh 0 - 7

O’CONNOR PARK, TULLAMORE

The Kerry ladies will contest the LGFA All-Ireland Senior Championship final for the third year in a row following a tense and hard-fought four-point victory over Armagh on Saturday.

Kerry looked to be under pressure early doors as the Ulster champions ran up a 0-5 to 0-2 lead with Blaithin Mackin and Eve Lavery to the fore, but a wellworked goal by the industrious Niamh Ní Chonchúir gave the favourites a foothold in the game midway through the first half.

Points by Danielle O’Leary, Louise Ní

Mhuircheartaigh, Aishling O’Connell and Niamh Carmody followed as The Kingdom found their groove in the second quarter. They were ahead by five at the break (1-7 to 0-5) but the harsh sin-binning of captain Carmody for what was deemed to be a high tackle potentially left them vulnerable for the opening nine minutes of the second period. That second half was all about solidity as far as Kerry were concerned and with the resolute Kayleigh Cronin and Deirdre Kearney protecting Ciara Butler’s

goal, Armagh found it difficult to create openings.

Kerry were wasteful at the other end and only managed one score in the entire half, via O’Leary (free), but it mattered little as the Orchard County were unable to breach the green and gold rearguard.

In the end it was a measured and controlled performance by Darragh Long and Declan Quill’s side, although there is certainly plenty of room for improvement, particularly in terms of shooting accuracy.

Waiting for Kerry in the 2024 All-Ireland final are a Galway side who were good value for their 2-7 to 0-10 win over Cork in the other semi-final. First-half goals by Róisín Leonard and Ailbhe Davoren proved crucial for the Tribeswomen,

who are looking forward to their first final appearance since 2019 when they lost to Dublin.

The big match will take place on Sunday week (August 4) at 4.15pm in Croke Park. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster at a price of €30 for adults and €15 for juveniles, students and OAPs.

The Junior and Intermediate finals will also take place on the day with Fermanagh v Louth (Junior) at 11.45am and Leitrim v Tyrone (Intermediate) at 1.45pm.

The LGFA have confirmed that the referee for the Kerry v Galway match will be Carlow’s Jonathan Murphy. This will be Murphy’s second TG4 All-Ireland Senior Final, having taken charge of the 2020 decider between Cork and Dublin.

One of the greatest games of all time

Surely it must rank as one of the greatest hurling games of all time, that amazing All- Ireland hurling final at Croke Park as The Banner just squeezed out The Rebels after a titanic 90-minute (AET) spectacle of one of the world's top sports. For skill, endeavour, delightful scoring (Clare 3-29 Cork 1-34) and total commitment, this was a classic. It was covered by the BBC for the first time and when a clash of the ash resulted in players being carpeted, there was no protest or feigning injuries. They just got up and got on with the game that yielded 67 scores. How many international soc-

cer games would you have to watch to see 67 scores?

The famous story of Setanta unfolded once more. In ancient Ireland, the young boy Setanta was invited to a feast by his uncle, King Conor of Ulster. He encountered a fierce guard dog belonging to the blacksmith Culann. Using his hurling stick and ball, Setanta killed the dog in self-defence. Feeling guilty, he offered to take the dog’s place until a replacement could be found. This act earned him the name Cú Chulainn, meaning ‘Hound of Culann’. That was the spirit of last Sunday’s thriller. I don’t think this Sunday’s football final will be as entertaining or as skilful. Despite beating Kerry, I don’t expect Armagh to win. Galway get my vote.

Kilcummin to mark

50 years of the LGFA

The Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) is 50 years old, and a huge effort is being made by the Kerry LGFA to mark the Golden Jubilee.

Kilcummin LGFA is very progressive, and they are marking the occasion tonight (Friday, July 26) with an ‘Evening of Celebrations’ that will include a festival of games from 7-8pm, followed by tea and finger food in the clubhouse.

A special presentation will be made to the family of the late Ger Healy who passed away suddenly last March. Ger was the backbone of the LGFA in Kilcummin. He was the heart and soul of ladies’ football in the club, and it is very fitting to see him remembered. The night in Kilcummin is open to everyone.

Kerry winning the ZuCar Minor All-Ireland final against Cavan at O’Connor Park, Tullamore tomorrow (Saturday) at 2pm would be a great start to mark the Golden Jubilee. I have seen some of the Kerry LGFA games at all ages and have been

hugely impressed by the skill levels and the progression the young players are making through the juvenile ranks, right up to senior.

Kerry won the Munster minor final back in April and then had to wait for 10 weeks for the All-Ireland semi-final, but they showed no sign of the layoff by hitting Galway for early goals. They eventually won easily, 6-10 to 1-10. Local lady Leah McMahon, a terrific all-rounder, was among the goalscorers. Best of luck to the Kerry minors.

The Kerry senior ladies did what the Kerry men failed to do recently by beating Armagh in an All-Ireland semi-final. They are now through to their third final in a row. Defeats in the past two finals stick in the crá.

Galway showed by defeating the powerful champions Dublin that they will be tough. The Kerry bosses are shrewd operators and will plan accordingly. The omens are good for the Brendan Martin Cup to return to Kerry for the first time since 1993.

All Irish eyes on medal hopefuls

Eamonn Fitzgerald chats to Killarney Olympian Gillian O’Sullivan about Ireland’s chances of claiming silverware at the Paris Games

Shortly after this edition of the Killarney Advertiser gets to you, the readers, the Summer Olympics 2024, the biggest sporting event of the year, gets underway with the traditional, opening ceremony.

However, it will not take place in a stadium. Paris 2024 is breaking new ground by bringing sports into the city and the same will be true of the Opening Ceremony, which is set to be held in the heart of Paris along its main artery, the Seine. Along the 6km route, you will recognise some of the great sights of Paris. Look out for the Irish boat, one of 94. It is a strong Irish team of athletes.

In all about 10,500 athletes who have

prepared so diligently for the past four years are bidding for glory for their respective countries. It is wonderful that the athletes will be the centrepiece of the ceremony. (The Paralympics will be held later.)

So, what is it like for the athletes in this global event? Earlier this week I spoke with Gillian O’Sullivan, the well-known Killarney Olympian. Gillian is ever helpful and courteous in assisting research regarding athletics for this column.

EF: Gillian, you have experienced the highs and lows of sports, including in the Olympics. Your memories of Sydney 2000?

GOS: It was my first Olympics, and it was

memorable. Like all the other athletes I had trained and prepared diligently for the Race Walk. Sydney is so far away from Ireland that those Games were held in September that year, I suspect to coincide with the Australian weather at that time. Paris makes it much more convenient for the Irish team.

That was an extra challenge. We had to go to Australia much earlier and were situated in a training camp in Newcastle. Waiting for the big event to start was not easy. My parents made the long journey supporting me and that was wonderful. I also met up with some Killarney friends who were in Sydney at that time.

You ran a great race, coming in 10th in a world-class field of athletes. It was an amazing experience.

(Modesty prevents this former world record holder from mentioning her achievements, but she won the silver medal in the World Championships at Paris in 2003, which was the first time since 1995 that an Irish athlete had won a World Championship medal. She was also the first female Kerry Olympian in Sydney 2000. She set the world record in the 5000m in Santry in 2002 at the Irish National Championships.) Move on four years and the Olympics in Athens loomed ahead. You were written up as a real medal prospect for Ireland going so well in the preparations until… The training and races went well and I was happy with the progress. Injury

struck. At first, I had hoped it would ease, but it didn’t, and eventually I had to make the tough decision to pull out of the bid for the Olympics in Athens.

That must have been heart-wrenching after going so well, just like Jordan Lee had to pull out recently of the forthcoming Paralympics.

My heart goes out to Jordan. He is such a wonderful athlete. It cannot be easy for him after all his preparations.

Ireland has a strong team this time. Is it realistic that we can win medals? If so, whom do you fancy?

One must be realistic with over 10,000 athletes all top stars in their own sports in their own countries. Every event is so competitive. Ireland got a big gee up in the Europeans. Any medal of any colour would be great for Ireland. Ciara Mageean is going great as she proved in the Europeans. She is the 2024 European Athletics Championships gold medallist at the distance. Race tactics and timing are crucial. When does the athlete go into top gear?

Everything must go right in the races. You also need that bit of luck as the race pattern evolves. It is very tactical and the margins between winning a medal and being out of the medals is so thin. What about Rhasidat Adeleke?

Rhasidat is the first Irish woman to break the 50-second barrier in the 400 metres and at 22 years of age is a great prospect in a highly competitive event.

I expect Mageean and Adeleke’s medal hopes will determine if they also go in the heats of the relay… Kellie Harrington must also be in the mix for medals, as well as the rowing stars who have been top-class at world events. Maybe the Irish golfers Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Leona Maguire, and Stephanie Meadow will come through. Yes, and don’t forget Rhys McClenaghan the gymnast.

We will have to keep an eye out for him. Thanks, as always, for your time, Gillian.

Thanks Eamonn.

McCarthy relishing Bohs test as Kerry get ‘special’ cup draw

Kerry FC head coach Conor McCarthy is looking forward to one of the biggest games in the club’s short history after drawing Premier Division side Bohemian FC in the third round of the FAI Cup.

The historic match will be played at Mounthawk Park in Tralee the weekend of August 16-18.

“It's a great draw,” McCarthy told the club website. “It’s a massive opportunity for us to go out and test ourselves against one of the best in the country. Having it at home is special, the supporters are excited and deserve a special day like this.

“It’s exciting for everyone, to play someone like Bohemians here in Mounthawk Park. The boys are really looking forward to it.”

The Kingdom booked their place in the last 16 thanks to a 0-2 away win against Cobh Ramblers last Friday, with Cian Brosnan and Ryan Kelliher grabbing the all-important goals in the opening 12 minutes. A red card in the 62nd minute for Beineón O’Brien Whitmarsh

did little to help Ramblers’ chances but nevertheless it was a fine performance by the Kerry boys, who continue to impress in what is just their second season in the League of Ireland.

The other standout fixtures in the third round are Shelbourne v Galway United and Cork City v Derry City.

Kerry are back in league action tonight (Friday) as they make the short journey to Turners Cross to take on runaway league leaders Cork. Kick-off is at 7.45pm.

The Tralee-based club are currently second from bottom in the First Division, three points ahead of Longford and five behind Treaty United. With 12 games remaining in the 2024 season, they will be hoping to chase down Treaty and the other clubs in their vicinity, while simultaneously pulling away from last place, which is where they finished in 2023.

Remarkably, they have already amassed twice as many points (20) as they did in the entirety of their debut campaign.

Killarney girls attend Camán to Munster blitz

The Killarney Camogie Club U12 squad recently had a great day out at the TUS Gaelic Grounds in Limerick for the ‘Camán to Munster’ blitz.

The Killarney girls played three great mini games against Scariff (Clare), Tournafulla (Limerick) and Boherlahan (Tipperary). It was a fantastic experience for all involved. The players received a tour of the Limerick team's dressing room and were well impressed with the facilities. The club would like to thank a number of people for their support and help in organising the trip: the Munster Camogie Association, especially Jonathan and Kiara; the girls and the parents who travelled; and all the coaches and mentors for always giving their time and sharing their knowledge at training, matches, and events such as this one.

New Gaelic football rules to be tested in October

The Railway Cup, a once-prestigious competition in the 1950s and 60s, is making its return after the last final took place in 2016.

The Interprovincial tournament, featuring Munster, Leinster, Connacht, and Ulster, will feature the best players from each of the counties in four combined teams. However, these Inter-county players will have to be previously eliminated from the club championship.

These games will be used by the FRC (Football Review Committee) to trial the new rules that they want imposed on the upcoming Championships. The suggestions for the new rules were unveiled earlier this year, aiming to create an improved Gaelic football that becomes 'the most enjoyable amateur game in the world to play and watch'. These new rules cover thirteen different elements of the game. A new 40m arc will be composed, with 2 points being issued for any score from outside it. This new arc will be trialled in the hope of inspiring more players to shoot from distance. A goal will be upgraded to 4 points, also aiming to prompt more at-

tempts at goal. A score within the arc will remain at one point. Other changes will involve trying to nullify blanket and negative defenses. These include having three, interchangeable players from each team remain in their own half at all times. The advantage rule has also been modified, removing the five-second limit and allowing players to carry on after being fouled to allow quick, counter-attacking football. All of these potential suggestions will be narrowed to a shortlist for the upcoming interprovincial matches.

Croke Park will be the venue for the trial games in October, with the tournament being broadcasted that weekend also. It is believed that a Special Congress will take place in December to determine the changes, with all 2025 competitions having these enhancements in place. This will lead to a mid-season review, which if positive will lead to a full adoption of the rules by January 1, 2026.

Galway vs Armagh Match Preview

It's the first All-Ireland Final since 2010 not to feature Dublin, Mayo, or Kerry, and the very first final between Galway and Armagh in history.

A new, fresh Championship final will take place this weekend, with two hungry counties, neither of which have experienced lifting the Sam Maguire in over twenty years. With both rambunctious sets of supporters, it's safe to say the atmosphere will be electric inside Croke Park.

Armagh's recent momentum will come from their turn-around win over favourites Kerry, a dazzling display of fitness and efficiency spurred on by an incredible orange support. Talisman Rian O'Neill, currently in Player of the Year form, will be a likely source of class and composure that will steady the Armagh attack. It's hard to determine which of the many Galway defenders will pick up O'Neill, with many of Kerry's efforts ultimately proving unsuccessful. It is also clear that there is talent in the Armagh defense, quieting and stabilizing Kerry's forward fire-power. The use of substitutions by McGeeney was a key result in the navigation towards an extra-time win in the semi-final. Stefan 'Soupy' Campbell and Jarly Og Burns will be likely resources to bring off the bench, providing an intensity that could eventually tire Joyce's Galway.

Padraig Joyce, on the other hand, will be very happy in where Galway currently stand, having conquered Dublin and Donegal in fantastic fashion. The win

over Dublin in particular mirrors the Armagh victory over Kerry – sheer determination and resilience shown by Galway to quench a heavy-favoured Dublin side. Efficiency in Galway's shooting, as well as ruthlessness in turn-overs, proved too much for the boys in blue to handle. If talisman Shane Walsh is on form, then McGeeney's men could be in trouble, with Walsh scoring nine points in Galway's last final back in 2022. Joyce's other fire-power in Damien Comer, Matthew Tierney, and Robert Finnerty, will keep the Armagh defenders truly busy. Galway's intensity around the middle of the park, including Paul Conroy, Johnny Maher, and Cillian McDaid, bested the midfield of both Dublin and Donegal, and may do the same to Armagh also. There seems to be little weakness across all positions for Padraig Joyce.

This is one of the toughest calls for a Championship final in years. The teams faced earlier in June in a round-robin clash, resulting in a draw. The famous 2022 quarter-final saw Galway edge Armagh in penalties. It seems both teams are neck and neck. There is hunger for the Sam found in both sets of supporters, with Armagh's last and only win arriving two years more recent than Galway's back in 2003. The result could sway on the performance of the star-men. If Shane Walsh is firing, and Rian O'Neill is contained, then the victory could lie towards Galway; vice-versa, however, and the Sam could be coming home for the Orchard county.

The girls are continually developing their skills and all their practise is really telling ..Up next we are away to Rathmore date and times TBC.

U12 GIRLS: Our U12 girls were delighted to have our senior ladies' goalkeeper Amy Walshe at training on last Tuesday evening, and they gained great knowledge from her. They are really looking forward to having her up at training again while Amy also presented Robyn with her medal from last year. Kerry Minor and Legion senior player Andrea Murphy also came and spoke to the girls about her own successes with the club and county. She gave them great advice and tips. Andrea is going to come and have a skills session with the girls. They are two excellent role models for the girls within the club. Later in the week the girls headed to Currans amongst eleven other clubs from the county to the Kerry GAA Centre of Excellence. They took part in a blitz, part of a day of celebration, marking 50years of Ladies Gaelic football. Two teams took part and it goes to show that ladies football is going from strength to strength.

THANK YOU: We, the Healy family would like to thank the people of Beaufort and beyond for your unwavering support over the past three years. Thanks to each and every one of you who came out and supported The Thomas Healy Memorial Football Blitz 2 weeks ago. You may have travelled 100 yards, or you may have travelled hundreds of miles, but you came. As you all know, this celebration of Thomas' life was a resounding success, made possible by the wonderful support of the people of Beaufort and surrounding areas. You sold tickets, you bought tickets, you were stewards, provided car parking, and acted as car parking attendants. You baked (by the truck load), you served refreshments, you sponsored Main Prizes and spot prizes, and you gave donations to help towards the cost of running The Blitz. You made your business mobile for the day and catered to the unprecedented crowds. Thanks to all the Clubs and young men who took part so sportingly on the day. It was particularly poignant that the two teams who contested the final were Thomas' beloved Blue & Yellow of Beaufort and his other love, the boys in Blue of Killarney Athletic's soccer team showcasing their footballing skills on the day to win outright, the Thomas Healy Memorial Football Blitz Cup kindly sponsored by our Club Chairman, Maurice Foley. Thank you to the Refs, Physios, and First Responder Crew. Thank you Beaufort GAA for facilitating the Blitz and for all your help in the lead up to and on the day itself. Volunteering is flourishing in our lovely parish - thank you all.
