First time passports are currently taking 8 weeks to process so DON’T DELAY ON APPLYING
Following the HSE’s recent announcement that the reimbursement to people travelling to Belfast for a Catatact Procedure would be reduced, I raised the matter in the Dail with the Taoiseach and Minister for Health and the HSE. They have agreed to extend the date of changes for the reimbursement until the end of August 2024.
Therefore I am advising anybody who is in need of a Cataract Procedure to book your place NOW on one of the three buses that I have arranged during the month of August. Please contact myself or my office for full details and everything will be arranged for you.
I assure you that I will continue making strong epresentation until such time as the Government can provide a proper service for people in the Republic of Ireland. Until such time, the reimbursement needs to be reinstated to the full amount to ensure people can go to Belfast to get their sight back.

Controversial Port Road development gets green light
A significant residential development for the Port Road and St. Margaret's Road area of Killarney has been granted planning permission by Kerry County Council.
The development, by Portal Asset Holdings, will include 224 residential units, comprising houses, apartments, and duplexes.
The project has not been widely welcomed by residents or elected members of Killarney Municipal District despite a chronic housing shortage in the town.
Residents of the Millwood area made 50 different complaints to An Bórd Pleanála after previously raising concerns in April of last year when the planning application
was first lodged.
Speaking on behalf of locals, St Margarets Road resident Brian O'Callaghan said: “Kerry County Council have disregarded all our observations and concerns. We have appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanála and are wating for them to publish the appeals on their website.”
The plans outline a mix of housing options, including two-, three-, and four-bedroom houses, as well as one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.
Additionally, a creche, landscaping, road improvements, cycle paths, and upgraded stormwater infrastructure are included in the proposal.
To accommodate the increased traffic and pedestrian flow, new vehicular access and pedestrian entrances onto Port Road are planned, along with upgrades to the existing road infrastructure. The development will require substantial infrastructure work, including the relocation of ESB powerlines, the construction of a foul pumping station, and the installation of public lighting and bike stores.
A Natura Impact Statement has been prepared to assess the potential environmental impact of the project.
Social housing scheme approved for Killarney
Kerry County Council is to develop social housing project just off the Bypass Road.
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has given approval to build 67 apartments, 31 one-bed houses and 36 two-bed houses.
Planning permission is in place for this de-
velopment and the project will now proceed to project planning for its delivery.
“I am delighted to welcome this approval for much-needed housing in the Killarney area where demand for one and two-bed properties in particular is enormous. The majority of social housing applicants in the Killarney Municipal District are on the one- and two-bed waiting list,” said the

Kerry General election candidates
Two prominent local councillors could be added to the Fianna Fáil general election ticket.
The deadline for nominations was 5 pm on Wednesday this week.
Cllr Michael Cahill, who was elected in the Kenmare Municipal District during the recent local elections has already confirmed that he wants to seek national election.
Killarney Municipal District councillor Niall Kelleher has also received a party nomination.
It is not clear how many candidates Fianna Fáil will run in Kerry for the next General Election.
The party would target securing two seats in the Kerry constituency. With sitting TD and Education Minister Norma Foley set to defend her seat the party’s second or third nomination will need to complement her efforts.
The Healy-Rae duo of Michael and Danny will also run in the five-seater constituency.
Meanwhile, Sinn Fein has confirmed that Pa Daly will seek re-election but the party has yet to nominate a potential running mate.
The Green Parry will run Chloe Murphy. Fine Gael has not yet confirmed its runners but it seems Tommy Griffin could potentially replace his cousin, the retiring Brendan Griffin.

Muckross rowers race to gold for Ireland
With Irish Olympic rowers strongly in the hunt for medals in Paris this week, there was great excitement closer to home as another Irish rowing squad took on the annual Home International Regatta in Scotland.
The Home International event is the annual ‘Triple Crown’ contest for Irish rowing and brings together Senior and Junior crews from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales.
This year’s contest took place last Saturday at the headquarters of Scottish rowing in Strathclyde near Glasgow. Four rowers from Muckross Rowing Club were selected among the Irish contingent which also featured Nathan Guerin and his coach Heidi Giles of Tralee Row-
ing Club, challenging in the para rowing competition.
The highlight of the day for the Kerry representatives was in the Men’s Senior Coxed Four event, with Muckross rowers Patrick Buckley (Rookery Road, Ballyspillane) and Finn O’Sullivan (Headford) racing to victory for Ireland along with two of their university crewmates from the UL Rowing Club’s Christopher O’Donovan and Adam Grace. The talented quartet were joined by Noah Giltinan of Presentation Brothers
Rowing Club, Cork in the coxswain seat.
In an impressive display, the crew led from the first quarter to the finish of the 2 km race with England second, Scotland third and Wales in fourth. It was a great result for the UL and Muckross rowers, with Patrick and Finn making their international debut.
The triumph was among one of four race wins for Ireland with gold medals also won in the Men’s Senior Single, Men’s Junior Double and Women’s PR2 Para Single.
Joining Patrick and Finn among the Irish squad were Niamh Coffey (from Coolies in Muckross) and Ethan O’Neill (Gortagullane in Muckross), whose successful rowing careers also began as junior rowers for the Muckross club.
Niamh and Ethan have since progressed to senior level as university rowers, with Niamh recently graduating from the University of Limerick Rowing Club and Ethan continuing his studies at University College Cork.
In the Women’s Senior Pair event, Niamh was joined by fellow University of Limerick and Skibbereen rower, Alyssa Mannix.
In a close battle, the Irish Pair fought hard against a strong Scottish crew. Less than one second separated the Irish and Scottish boats racing into the final quarter but it was a Scottish surge which saw Niamh and Alyssa cross the line in second for a silver medal placing with England third and Wales fourth.
O’Neill was selected to race in the Men’s Senior Coxless Four along with Rohan Nolan (Queens University), Tiarnan Mc Knight (Commercial RC Dublin) and Thomas Stevens (Commercial RC Dublin).
Top honours in the event went to Scotland who battled closely with England in second, with the Irish four crew a strong third and well clear of Wales in fourth.
Debut album by Killarney songwriter Amano released
THREAD, the debut EP from Killarney songwriter Amano and Cork producer Kalabanx(Garry McCarthy/ GMCBeats), was due for release today (Friday 2).
The project was recorded at The Kabin Studio in Cork City.
Contributors to the EP include Liam Ó’Maonlaí on harp and vocals and Rónán Ó’Snodaigh on bodhrán.
Amano attributes her love of sean-nós and the Irish language to her primary school days in Gaelscoil Faithleann, Killar-
ney. She later began to craft her performance style during Friday recitals while at secondary school in the ISK, Killorglin. The magic and landscape of County Kerry are an enduring source of inspiration in Amano’s work from poetry to song.
Available on all major streaming platforms from August 2, an extended edit of THREAD including three additional live recordings will also be released exclusively on Bandcamp.
The EP’s striking artwork was co-illustrated by Irish artists Aoife Tierney and Darach Ó’Braonáin.

Killarney schools added to Hot School Meals Programme
Two Killarney schools have been added to the Hot School Meals programme.
The scheme was first set up in 2019 with a pilot of 30 schools but has now expanded to almost 2,200 primary schools nationwide.
Around 69 primary schools in Kerry are currently operating the Hot School Meals Programme and this is now being extended to a further 12 primary schools in the county.
Lisivigeen and Tiernaboul national schools have been added to the list in the Killarney district.
Minister for Education and Kerry TD Nor-
ma Foley has welcomed the expansion of the scheme.
“The Hot School Meals Programme has been a tremendous success and it is fantastic that it has now been expanded to another 12 primary schools in Kerry,” she said.
“We now have almost 2,200 primary schools on the programme and all remaining schools can apply to join for the next school year in September.”
There are 8,984 children in Kerry currently benefitting from free hot school meals and the addition of 12 more schools to the programme will increase this even further.

Rathmore teacher is new ASTI President
A Rathmore teacher has been elected as the new president of the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland.
Donal Cremin, teaches Technical Graphics, Engineering and Civic, Social and Political Education at Scoil Phobail Luachra.
Mr Cremin began his term as ASTI President on Thursday this week.
He will focus on making second-level teaching a more attractive career for young people during his term.
“Young teachers are voting with their feet and moving abroad or out of teaching for more sustainable careers,” he said.
“Enhancing the attractiveness of second-level teaching means reducing the cost of entry to teaching, providing recently qualified teachers with increased job security, shortening the 25-year salary scale, improving career-path opportunities for classroom teachers, and addressing teacher workload. These are some of my priorities for the coming year.”
He also said the ASTI has expressed
serious concerns to the Department of Education and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) about aspects of the redevelopment of the Senior Cycle.
Certain proposed changes to the teaching, learning and assessment of Senior Cycle subject specifications are out of step with real-world challenges, said the ASTI President. These challenges include the impact of AI and the fact that second-level schools are under-resourced.
“Teachers are passionate about their students and about the subjects they teach. What is taught, how it is taught and the resources available to students and teachers really matter. Teachers will engage positively when they know that students’ learning will benefit and that the proposed changes will work in terms of implementation in the classroom,” he added.
Calls for short-term lettings bill to be scrapped
Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has said that the government risks triggering a tourism crisis in rural Ireland in their efforts to solve the housing crisis with the Short Term Lettings bill.
The newly elected MEP has described the bill as ‘not fit for purpose’ and claims it is already damaging the rural tourism industry.
Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has called on the government to rethink the Short Term Letting Bill saying that while it is well-intentioned, it will damage the tourism market in rural Ireland.
According to Ní Mhurchú, there are flaws in the bill that are certain to do damage to rural tourism in Ireland, with no guarantee that it will bring about the intended release of properties back into the long term rental market.
“There are absolutely no guarantees that those short-term rental properties that are forced out of the tourism rental market will rent out their properties on the long-term rental market. Many of the tourism providers I have met with say that their properties are not suitable for the long-term market or that they have no interest in letting out their properties on a year-round basis,” she said. “We have no evidence that points to
the fact that this bill will bring 10,000 properties back into the long-term rental market. We do know that taking 10,000 short-term lets out of our tourism market overnight is sure to damage our rural tourism industry”
Ní Mhurchú criticised the fact that this bill has been hanging over tourist accommodation providers for almost 3 years, creating a sense of uncertainty in the market.
“Uncertainty is damaging tourism providers who are unsure as to whether they can take bookings for the summer 2025 period or not. This uncertainty is causing great stress and anxiety to tourism providers and is already having an impact on a tourism market that typically takes bookings up to 12 months in advance”
Ní Mhurchú says the short-term lettings bill is well-intentioned and may be more suitable to Irish cities but that its impact on rural Ireland’s tourism market has not been taken into consideration. Ní Mhurchú says that tourism providers are already under significant pressure given the cost of living crisis, higher VAT rate and poor summer weather.
Ní Mhurchú pointed to the views of Dr Sarah Hamill of the School of Law at Trinity College where Hamill said that this bill “won’t increase long-term rental supply.”
Gaza humanitarian lecture a sell-out
Oxford-based consultant surgeon
Professor Nick Maynard delivered a lecture on his first-hand experience in Gazza to a capacity audience at the Brehon Hotel last week.
Professor Maynard described in detail the horrific healthcare situation in Gaza, how he has treated patients with horrendous injuries without anaesthesia, how malnutrition is endemic in the population and how patients are dying in agony due to morphine shortages.
Basic sanitary and surgical equipment is
either non-existent or in scarce supply. Medical evacuations are also not being carried out frequently enough and the few partially functioning hospitals are overwhelmed daily with severely wounded patients, attendees heard.
“The evening was a great success, and actually ended up selling out,” said Susan Larkin Kerry Healthcare Workers, the group that organised the event.
“Professor Maynard has been receiving national attention in recent days with articles on his experiences.”

SUSTAINABLE LIVING: ECO-FRIENDLY DECOR AND PRACTICES
Our homes, often seen as personal sanctuaries, can also be significant contributors to environmental impact. However, they can also be powerful tools for positive change.
The concept of sustainable living extends beyond recycling and energy efficiency; it encompasses every facet of our lives, including the spaces we inhabit. By incorporating eco-friendly principles into our home decor and daily routines, we can minimise our ecological footprint while creating beautiful, harmonious living spaces.
The foundation of sustainable decor lies in mindful consumption. Before acquiring new items, consider whether they are truly necessary and if there are sustainable alternatives. Opt for second-hand treasures, repurposed
materials, and locally sourced products whenever possible. This approach not only reduces waste but also adds unique character to your home. Natural materials like wood, cotton, linen, and wool are preferable to synthetic fabrics, as they are biodegradable and often require fewer harmful chemicals in their production.
When selecting furniture and home accessories, prioritise pieces constructed from sustainable materials such as reclaimed wood, bamboo, or organic cotton. These choices support environmentally responsible practices and
contribute to a healthier indoor environment. Additionally, consider the durability and longevity of items. Investing in well-made, timeless pieces reduces the need for frequent replacements and minimises waste.
Lighting plays a crucial role in both aesthetics and energy consumption. Energy-efficient LED bulbs are a no-brainer, offering significant savings and a longer lifespan compared to traditional incandescent bulbs. Natural light should be maximised through strategic window placement and minimal obstructions. Incorporating plants into your home not only enhances air quality but also creates a soothing atmosphere. Sustainable living extends beyond the visible elements of decor. The choices we make behind the scenes have a profound impact on the environment. Opt for eco-friendly cleaning products that are free from harmful chemicals. Many household cleaners can be made using natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. Reducing water consumption is another essential aspect of sustainable living. Installing low-flow
showerheads and faucets, fixing leaks promptly, and collecting rainwater for gardening are effective strategies. Mindful consumption should also extend to textiles. Choose bedding, towels, and curtains made from organic materials or recycled fibers. Avoid products treated with harmful chemicals, as these can release toxins into the air and harm your health. When it comes time to launder these items, opt for eco-friendly detergents and consider air-drying whenever possible to reduce energy consumption. Creating a sustainable home is an ongoing journey, not a destination. It involves making conscious choices and embracing a lifestyle that respects the planet. By incorporating eco-friendly decor and practices into our daily lives, we can reduce our environmental impact, improve our well-being, and inspire others to join the movement towards a more sustainable future. Remember, small steps can lead to significant changes. Every conscious choice we make brings us closer to a healthier planet and a more harmonious home.
WARDROBE WONDERS
Finding the Perfect Fit for Your Space
Choosing the right wardrobe for your space is like finding the perfect pair of shoes—it has to fit just right while also sitting pretty. With so many options out there, there’s no excuse for settling for less than perfection.
Sliding wardrobes are the answer to small room woes. Their sleek doors glide effortlessly along tracks, saving precious floor space. Plus, they give your room a modern, streamlined look. After all, in a more compact space, who wants clunky doors that swing out and eat up half your room?
Wooden wardrobes are classic and versatile. Whether it’s rich mahogany or light oak, wooden wardrobes add warmth and sophistication to any space. They can be intricately carved for a traditional feel or smooth and minimalist for a contemporary vibe. And let’s face it, wood just smells nice.
Wardrobes with drawers are a godsend for the organisationally challenged. These designs come with built-in drawers, perfect for stashing socks, underwear, and all those accessories you swear you'll organise someday.
This setup means you can have everything in one place, reducing clutter and eliminating the need for extra furniture. The last thing you want is to trip over a stray sock on your way to bed. When picking a wardrobe, think about your space, storage needs, and style. For a small room, a sliding wardrobe with mirrored doors can create the illusion of more space.
On the other hand, a large bedroom can handle a grand, wooden wardrobe with ample hanging space and built-in drawers.
Ultimately, the right wardrobe should blend seamlessly into your space, offering practical storage solutions while enhancing your room's overall aesthetic. Because, let’s be honest, a wardrobe should be more than just a place to hide your mess; it should be a stylish statement piece.
Right now, you can get up to 50% off wardrobes (and all furniture, flooring, bathrooms, and carpets) in our 25 year Anniversary Sale. Don’t miss your chance to pick up stylish pieces with incredible discounts.
PERFECT SOFA
Tips and Considerations
When it comes to furnishing your living room, the sofa is likely to be the centrepiece of the space. A comfortable and stylish sofa can be the perfect addition to any home, but with so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one. Here are some tips and considerations to help you choose the perfect sofa for your living room.
1. SIZE AND SPACE
The first consideration when choosing a sofa is the size and space of your living room. You'll want to measure the dimensions of the room and determine how
much space you have available for the sofa. Consider the placement of other furniture pieces, as well as any doorways or windows that may affect the size and placement of the sofa. You'll also want to consider the number of people who will be using the sofa regularly, as well as any pets or children in the household.
2. STYLE AND DESIGN
The style and design of the sofa is another important consideration. There are many different styles to choose from, including traditional, modern, contemporary, and transitional. You'll want to choose a style that complements the overall design of your living room and reflects your personal taste. Consider the colour and texture of the fabric, as well as the shape and style of the arms, legs, and backrest. Recliners, corner sofas and accent chairs are all further considerations.
3. COMFORT AND SUPPORT
Of course, one of the most important factors in choosing a sofa is comfort and support. You'll want to choose a sofa that provides adequate support for your back and neck, as well as comfortable cushioning for your seat and arms. Consider the type of foam or padding used in the sofa, as well as the firmness of the cushions. If you have any back or neck issues, you may want to consider a sofa with built-in lumbar support.
4. DURABILITY AND MAINTENANCE
Finally, you'll want to consider the durability and maintenance of the sofa. Look
for a sofa made from high-quality materials that can withstand regular use and wear and tear. Consider the type of fabric or leather used, as well as the quality of the stitching and construction. You'll also want to consider the ease of cleaning and maintenance, especially if you have pets or children in the household.
In conclusion, choosing the perfect sofa for your living room requires careful consideration of size and space, style and design, comfort and support, and durability and maintenance. By taking the time to research and consider these factors, you can find a sofa that not only looks great but also provides comfort and functionality for years to come.
Welcome to 2024, where garden design merges style, sustainability, and comfort. This year's trends focus on creating inviting outdoor spaces with chic and cozy garden furniture, eco-friendly solar lights, and quality, lasting pots.
Chic Garden Furniture: Gone are the days when outdoor furniture was an afterthought. In 2024, garden furniture takes centre stage, offering a seamless extension of your home’s interior style into the great outdoors. Think plush, weather-resistant seating in neutral tones or bold colors, complemented by textured cushions and throws. Modular seating options provide flexibility, allowing you to reconfigure your space for intimate gatherings or large parties.
SOLAR LIGHTING: Lighting is not just functional; it’s transformative. This year, solar lights are illuminating gardens with both eco-friendly and aesthetic appeal. Whether it's soft pathway lights, elegant lanterns, or string lights draped over a pergola, these energy-efficient options create a warm, inviting atmosphere without the need for electrical wiring. Look for designs that incorporate motion sensors for added security and convenience. The trend leans towards subtlety—think delicate fairy lights intertwined with foliage or chic, minimalist fixtures that blend seamlessly into the landscape.
DURABLE POTS: A trend towards sustainability and longevity has influenced our choice in planters. Quality pots made from durable materials like terracotta, stone, and concrete are favoured for their timeless appeal and resilience against the elements. These pots not only provide a sturdy home for your plants but also add a sculptural element to your garden. Consider using them to create striking focal

points or to accentuate pathways and seating areas. Mixed heights and sizes add depth and interest, turning a simple plant display into a dynamic visual experience.
WATER FEATURES: The soothing sound of water can transform any garden into a tranquil retreat. In 2024, water features are making a splash with innovative designs that range from traditional fountains to contemporary water walls. For those with smaller spaces, sleek, self-contained units or compact
wall-mounted fountains offer a perfect solution. Water features not only enhance the sensory experience of your garden but also attract wildlife, adding a touch of nature to your space.
SUSTAINABLE PLANTS: This year’s plant trends are all about sustainability and biodiversity. Native plants, which require less water and care, are at the forefront, promoting a garden that thrives with minimal environmental impact. Flowering plants that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies are popular
choices, supporting local ecosystems. Additionally, edible gardens continue to gain popularity, with herbs, vegetables, and fruit trees providing both beauty and bounty. For a touch of the exotic, consider hardy tropical plants that can withstand various climates, adding a lush, vibrant feel to your garden. There might be too much info there but it’s some helpful tips that also direct people to our products. Maybe if we could mention somewhere that all of these products are available at Boyles of Killorglin.

Bank of Ireland posts €1.1 billion half-year profit
Bank of Ireland has announced a pre-tax profit of €1.1 billion for the first half of the year, marking a 5% increase compared to the same period last year. The strong performance was driven primarily by higher interest rates and a lower-than-expected impairment charge.
The lender's net interest income, the difference between what it earns on loans
and pays on deposits, surged as the European Central Bank (ECB) implemented a series of interest rate hikes to combat inflation. This increase in revenue has bolstered the bank's overall financial performance.
Myles O'Grady, the Bank of Ireland Group CEO, said that the bank is now half-way through its three-year strategy, adding that it is meeting or beating its targets and investing for the future.
On the mortgage front, Mr O'Grady said he believed the period of "competitive retrenchment" in the market had ended and that he expected other players to become more active as the rates environment turns a corner.
He said that while the bank expected to continue to grow its mortgage book, its share of the overall mortgage market would likely fall from the 41% share recorded at the end of June.
Murdoch dynasty in turmoil as family feud erupts over
media empire
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has found himself embroiled in a dramatic family feud as he seeks to solidify control over his vast media empire.
The battle for succession has pitted the 93-year-old patriarch against some of his own children, exposing deep divisions within the Murdoch family.
At the heart of the dispute is a power struggle over the future direction of News Corp, the parent company of Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, and other influential media outlets. Murdoch’s eldest son, Lachlan, is seen as the favoured heir apparent, aligning closely with his father's conservative ideology. However, other Murdoch children, including James and Elisabeth, have ex-
Japanese students hospitalised after consuming 'adult-only' crisps
A group of 14 high school students in Tokyo were rushed to the hospital after consuming a type of crisp labelled as "adult-only."
The incident has sparked concerns about food labelling and the consumption of highly spicy or potent food products among young people.
According to local authorities, the students, all first-year high schoolers, began experiencing symptoms such as nausea, stomach pain, and a burning sensation in their mouths shortly after consuming the crisps. Paramedics were called to the scene, and the affected students were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The crisps in question were reportedly labelled with a warning indicating they were not suitable for minors. However, the exact ingredients and the level of spiciness or other potent substances contained in the product remain under investigation.
pressed concerns about the company's direction and have clashed with their father over issues such as climate change and political polarisation. These differences have escalated into a bitter public dispute, with allegations of betrayal and misconduct flying between family members. The implications of this family feud are far-reaching with some media analysts speculating that the outcome of the power struggle could significantly impact the editorial direction of News Corp’s properties, as well as the company's overall business strategy.

Fuel prices to rise in Ireland as excise duty increases
Motorists across Ireland are bracing for a fresh financial blow as petrol and diesel prices are set to rise significantly from the start of this month.
The increase is attributed to the government's decision to reinstate excise duty on fuel, a measure initially introduced to cushion the impact of soaring energy costs following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The upcoming hike will see petrol prices jump by 4 cents per litre, while diesel will increase by 3 cents per litre. This marks the second fuel price increase in just three months, adding further strain on
household budgets.
Industry experts warn that the price hike could lead to a surge in cross-border shopping, with motorists opting to fill up their tanks in Northern Ireland where fuel prices are typically lower. This could have implications for businesses along the border, which rely on domestic consumption.
Opposition parties in government have criticised the government's decision to proceed with the excise duty increase, arguing that it will disproportionately affect low-income families and small businesses. Calls for targeted support measures to mitigate the impact of the rising fuel costs have been growing louder.
Fota Wildlife Park welcomes two new Meerkat pups US reaches plea deal with alleged 9/11 mastermind
The United States has reached a plea deal with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001, attacks.
Mohammed, along with two other accused co-conspirators, has agreed to plead guilty to multiple charges in exchange for life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
The plea deal marks a significant turning point in a case that has spanned over two decades. The military commission proceedings at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, had been plagued by delays and legal challenges, with victims' families expressing frustration over the protracted legal process.
Fota Wildlife Park is celebrating the arrival of two new meerkat pups! Born on June 22, to mother Biggy, the pups are already thriving and exploring their habitat.
Biggy, who came to Fota Wildlife Park from Dieren Park Zoo in the Netherlands in May 2023, previously gave birth to three pups last September.
The meerkat is a social animal that lives in groups called "mobs". They are known for
their cooperative behavior, with group members taking turns babysitting the young and foraging for food. Fota Wildlife Park is a conservation charity dedicated to preserving biodiversity and educating the public about the natural world.
The park is inviting the public to help name the two new pups with two conservation annual passes as prizes for the best name suggestions. For more information visit their website.

The Government have approved formal drafting of new legislation which could dispense with paper tax discs.
The Roads Bill 2024 will provide the necessary legislative basis to facilitate the flow of information so that local authorities, in their role as road authorities, may request, receive, and process road collision data from both the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána.
This data will enable road authorities to target areas where collisions are more prone to occur with investment and infrastructure. It is expected that this will support the delivery of the Gov-
ernment’s Road Safety Strategy 20212030 targets of reducing road fatalities by 50% this decade and achieving Vision Zero - no deaths or serious injuries on our roads - by 2050. Additionally, Cabinet has approved the drafting of the National Vehicle and Driver File Bill 2024. This Bill will focus on a number of issues, including provisions to allow for the abolition of the requirement to display a motor tax disc. AGS already have immediate digital access to motor tax information so this will
get rid of a now unnecessary validation of tax compliance. The legislation will also strengthen General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) for access to vehicle and driver data, remove the end date of declarations of non-use of a motor vehicle, and provide for some technical corrections to existing legislation. The National Vehicle and Driver File (NVDF) is the central register of vehicles and drivers, a database maintained by the Department of Transport. The NVDF is widely used by state agencies, including the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána for a variety of road safety purposes.

NOVENA TO ST. CLAIRE
Kerry
For patient Kerry, the time is now
Kingdom on the cusp of first All-Ireland since
They say three is the magic number. For Kerry, after all the misery, a small bit of magic certainly wouldn’t go amiss.
This team have been on an amazing adventure over the past three seasons.
From relative obscurity to a Division 2 title, then an All-Ireland final, then a Division 1 title, then another All-Ireland final, their rise has been nothing short of meteoric. Once also-rans, they are now bona fide frontrunners.
But their coronation as the new high queens of Gaelic football is not yet complete. One final step remains, and it's a step they have struggled with in their previous two attempts.
The mighty Meath beat them back in ’22 and top dogs Dublin blocked their path in ’23. This time it’s a tribe called Galway that stand between them and
their first All-Ireland title since 1993. They have waited patiently at the entrance for far too long. Now it’s time to smash down the door to greatness.
Darragh Long and Declan Quill’s side have exhibited pretty ruthless efficiency for most of this season. After succumbing to an impressive Armagh outfit in the league final (a final they qualified for “almost by accident”, in their own words), they went to on to capture their first Munster Championship since 2017 by beating traditional provincial powerhouses Cork in the decider.
A draw with Donegal in the All-Ireland group stage was a but a minor bump in the road and a brilliant performance against Waterford saw them through to the last eight. Meath were dealt with in the quarters,
as were Armagh in the semis, and the mood in the camp is said to be very positive ahead of Sunday’s winnertakes-all battle in D1.
Galway are a formidable opponent, however, and the Connacht champions will have plenty of confidence themselves after taking down the holders Dublin in the quarter-final (AET) and Cork in the semi-final.
In the pacy Olivia Divilly and the accurate Róisín Leonard they have two of the most dangerous forwards in the game right now and the Kerry defence will need to be on high alert if they are to keep the Galway women at bay.
Kerry will naturally look to Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh to provide leadership up front but they can also call on the fit-again Síofra O’Shea, Emma Dineen, Danielle O’Leary, Niamh Carmody and
1993
Niamh Ní Chonchúir to get the all-important scores. Hannah O’Donoghue, who came off the bench in the semi-final, is also capable of finding the back of the net.
Long and Quill were relieved that all their players made it through last Sunday morning’s session (their final fullon session of the season) unscathed and everything is in place for another crack at glory.
It is hoped that a large Kerry crowd will be in attendance at Croke Park for the LGFA’s flagship event of the year. The senior final will be preceded by the junior final between Fermanagh and Louth (11.45am) and the intermediate final between Tyrone and Leitrim (1.45pm). Tickets are available via Ticketmaster at a cost of €30 for adults and €15 for juveniles, students and OAPs.

Kerry to make it third time lucky
Eamonn Fitzgerald is tipping Kerry to beat Galway in Sunday’s All-Ireland ladies’ final
Will Kerry extend their losing run of consecutive All-Ireland final defeats or will they lift the Brendan Martin Cup in this special year, the Golden Jubilee of the LGFA?
Kerry were very impressive throughout the league and in the championship campaign. With Dublin knocked out by Galway their chances of victory are heightened.
Joint managers Darragh Long and Declan Quill have done a great job moulding this team into a winning outfit and after that defeat to Dublin last year, the focus has been on the 2024 All-Ireland.
Kerry were victorious on scoreline of 1-8 to 0-7 in the semi-final, but they did what the men failed to do and defeated Armagh. A Niamh Ní Chonchúir goal in the 16th minute was crucial as Armagh had

come flying out of the blocks. That strike steadied Kerry and by half-time they led 1-7 to 0-5. A powerful defence held firm in the second half to qualify for the final. Believe it or not, Kerry have not won this senior title since 1993. They won an unbelievable nine-in-a-row from 1982 to 1990 in the era of the great Mary Jo Curran. It is unlikely that string of successes will ever again be achieved so one title at a time will do nicely for Kerry, especially appropriate in this Golden Jubilee year.
Kayleigh Cronin and Ciara Murphy anchor
the defence. Anna Galvin is in great form at midfield and in the forwards Niamh Ní Chonchúir, Emma Dineen and Danielle O’Leary are great scorers. It is also fantastic to see Síofra O’Shea back free from injury.
The vastly experienced Niamh Ní Mhuircheartaigh is the reigning Player’s Player of the Year and an All-Star in 2012, 2013, 2022 and 2023. She will be closely marked as Footballers of the Year always are. Ask David Clifford.
VERDICT: Kerry to win this one in Croker.
Brave U18s just fall short against splendid Cavan
| By Eamonn Fitzgerald
A fantastic fightback by the Kerry minors came up just short as Cavan held on for a 4-11 to 4-8 victory in last Saturday’s All-Ireland final in Tullamore.
This is a splendid Cavan team backboned by the Breffni ladies who won last year’s U16 title and retained it this year. Cavan took control from the start and led 3-5 to 2-2 at half-time. That dominance continued and by the 50th minute, they had built up an imposing lead of 3-10 to 2-6.
The never-say-die attitude of Kerry made for a dramatic recovery, however, as they clawed back that 10-point deficit. It was a memorable comeback by Kerry and they had it down to just two points with 20 seconds remaining, before Cavan added their final score.
It was disappointing for the young Kerry ladies, especially Lucy O’Connor of Austin Stacks who scored three goals. There was also a standout display by Leah McMahon. I have no doubt that many of them will go on to taste success at senior level. Local clubs can be proud of their players: Aoise O’Donoghue, Kathryn Ryan (both Glenflesk), Grace Murphy (Rathmore), Seodhla Colleran (Fossa), Katie Doe (Firies) Leah McMahon (Dr Crokes) and Andrea Murphy (Legion).
It was Cavan’s first title while Kerry had won this grade in 1980, 1981 and 1985. They had never lost a final until Saturday last. The management team deserves great credit: Kristian O'Donovan (manager), Amanda Brosnan, Kerry Harkin, Cliona Coffey, Jonathan Griffin and the one and only Mary Jo Curran. What a great example for all players young and not as young. Maith thú, Mary Jo.

Club football is back with a bang
- Dingle and Rathmore off to positive starts in the senior - Glenflesk pip Legion in controversial intermediate clash
The Kerry Petroleum Club Championships got up and running last weekend with a full round of fixtures in both the senior and intermediate grades and the entertainment levels were through the roof at several venues around the county. Reigning senior champions Dingle went into their match with Dr Crokes as underdogs with the bookies after the Crokes won all 11 of their county league matches. To paraphrase Michael Jordan, Dingle must taken that personally because they were brilliant on the day and eventually ran out six-point winners. The Geaneys – Paul, Dylan and Conor – were on top form at Stack Park, although in fairness the Crokes can count themselves unlucky with regards to two penalty calls that went against them in the second half. Crokes will need to bounce back at home to a Milltown/Castlemaine side who defeated Na Gaeil in Round 1 without the services of the injured Cillian Burke. Dingle can march on towards the semi-finals by beating Na Gaeil in Páirc an Ághasaigh. In Group 1, Rathmore had a fine fourpoint victory over Kenmare in the Fitzgerald Stadium while Spa and Templenoe played out a tense draw in Glenflesk. The Killarney club host Kenmare in Round 2 with Rathmore travelling to Templenoe.
INTERMEDIATE
The battle of Legion and Glenflesk was surely one of the more entertaining ties of the round, although the townies left Tullig frustrated having given up a late three-point lead to lose by one. A penal-

ty by Darragh Roche levelled matters in the last minute of normal time before a fisted effort by Kevin Bowler gave Glenflesk an unexpected lead. There was still time for Legion to mount one final attack but when Cian Gammell’s shot fell short, the referee blew for full time – although, controversially, not before Legion’s Peter McCarthy had gathered the loose ball close to the Glenflesk goal.
Garry McGrath’s charges will need to beat Gneeveguilla in Derreen in Round 2 to keep their promotion hopes alive.
Gneeveguilla enjoyed a resounding win over St Mary’s in their opening fixture; the Cahersiveen outfit might find their away match against Glenflesk equally challenging.
In Group 1, Stacks and Glenbeigh/Glencar beat John Mitchels and An Ghaeltacht respectively. Stacks will be expected to make it two from two when they play the Gaeilgeoirs at Connolly Park, while on the outskirts of Tralee, Mitchels take on Glenbeigh/Glencar.
Rahillys and Kilcummin both had good wins in their Group 2 openers against Laune Rangers and newcomers Listowel. And finally, in Group 3, Castleisland Desmonds defeated Ballydonoghue and a late Paudie Clifford goal wasn’t enough to salvage a point for last year’s runners-up Fossa against Beaufort. Fossa are at home to Castleisland on Saturday and they need a result if they are to emulate last year’s amazing run to the final.

Kerry FC to host inaugural Golf Classic
Kerry Football Club will host an inaugural Golf Classic on Friday, September 20 at the beautiful Beaufort Golf Course. The club will swap the big ball for the small ball for one day only in a bid to raise funds for their six teams across the academy and senior structures.
Kerry FC was formed originally with a men’s U17 team before continuing to grow out to a full League of Ireland academy club. Back in November 2022, the club received a licence to compete in the senior league, entering a men’s team in the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division. The club has been going from strength to strength since and has now welcomed a women’s team at U17 level for the first time.
With some award-winning golf courses on the club’s doorstep, Kerry FC are delighted to reveal details of their first ever Golf Classic which will take place on the stunning parkland course in Beaufort, right in the heart of Mid Kerry.
Teams can now enter the event, which will be both a test of golf and an enjoyable and fun occasion for everyone. Teams of four are €250 while you can also sponsor a tee box for €100. There will be some fantastic prizes for the winners and a raffle and goody bags on the day.
Speaking at the launch of the Golf Classic, Kerry FC General Manager Seán O’Keeffe said: “We are delighted to be in a position to host a Golf Classic in 2024. It has been in our planning for several years, but last year being our first year in the league made it difficult to find time to do anything.
“Beaufort is a fantastic course, nice and challenging but also where some good scores can come in as well. So we are looking forward to welcoming everyone to Beaufort and Kerry for the event, we have a good number of teams entered already so I’m sure it will be a successful event.”
To enter or to sponsor a tee box you can contact Seán on 087 1890892 or Eamonn Foley on 086 8074886.

INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: A rip-roaring contest in Spa saw us lead all the way until the 60th minute but a late surge from Glenflesk, which yielded 1-1, swung the game in their favour at the eleventh hour. In what was a high-quality affair we went to the dressing room at half time 0-11 to 0-9 to the good. A Peter McCarthy goal midway through the second half looked to have set us on the road to victory until that late Glenflesk renaissance. Even in the dying embers of the game we were on the front foot searching for an equaliser, but the whistle blew time on our effort, leaving both players and management exasperated. Round two will see Gneeveguilla visit Direen on Saturday evening at 7pm, in what will be a must win game. Final score Killarney Legion 1-16 Glenflesk 1-17. Team: Brian Kelly, Darragh Fleming, Darragh O’Doherty, Rob Leen, Conor Gammell, Danny Sheahan, Jonathon Lyne (0-1), Cian Gammell (0-1), Jamie Alade, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Darragh Lyne, Micheal Devlin (0-1), James O’Donoghue (0-6) David O’Sullivan (0-7), Peter McCarthy (1-0). Subs used Denis Sheahan for Micheal Devlin. MINOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: The fixtures have been confirmed for the group stages of the Keane’s SuperValu Minor County Championship. We entertain Kenmare Shamrocks in Direen
on Monday August 5th while a week later we travel to St Kieran’s in the second round. A neutral venue fixture against Austin Stacks rounds up the group games. The top two in the group qualify for the quarter finals with third and fourth entering into the Shield competition. Plenty football ahead for our U17 Boys.
KERRY MINOR LADIES: No joy for Andrea Murphy and the Kerry minors as they suffered a two-point defeat to Cavan in a cracking final played in Tullamore. They left everything out on the pitch and can be very proud of their efforts.
SPEEDY RECOVERY: Both Billy McGuire and William Shine have had their respective ACL reconstruction surgeries, and the club wishes both of them well in their rehab after their first steps to recovery.
U15 BOYS: Our U15B Team narrowly lost out in the East Kerry Division 2 final on Wednesday evening in a very well contested local derby against Fossa A. The teams exchanged scores in the early stages and were level 1-2 to 0-5 after 15 mins. Unfortunately we lost a player to a red card at this stage leaving us down to fourteen players for the rest of the game. The boys battled well and at the interval trailed by a point 2-5 to 2-4. The pattern continued in the second half between two closely matched teams. The boys put in a massive effort down a player but in the end Fossa prevailed by three points for a deserved win. The boys have had a great East Kerry League campaign competing so strongly against good A Teams which is great for their development. We expect many of the players who played tonight to play a key role on our A teams in years to come.
SENIOR LADIES: The senior ladies continued their winning ways with a hard earned 2-6 to 0-6 win over Annauscaul/Castlegregory on Monday evening last. A goal in each half would prove to be the difference between the two sides. A final round engagement against John Mitchels this Monday July 29th in Tralee could see the team qualify for the final of the Corrib Oil County League.
Spa GAA
LGFA: Best wishes to the Kerry Senior Ladies Football team who play Galway in the TG4 All Ireland Senior Championship Final this Sunday in Croke Park. The LGFA is celebrating 50 years on the day also, it promises to be an exciting day in Croke Park on and off the field.
SENIOR LADIES: Spa ladies travelled to St Senan’s to play Finuge/St Senan’s in the 3rd round of the Corrib Oil Senior Club League. It was a tough game in very tough wet, cold conditions which contributed to a lot of handling errors and wides from both sides. Spa played some very impressive football and were
unlucky not to be closer at the final whistle. Finuge St Senan’s 4-06 to Spa 2-05.
LOTTO: Numbers drawn: 10, 16, 17, 19. No jackpot winner. Lucky dips €50 each: Mary Foran, Online; Denis Russell, Ardaneanig; Mike Mangan, Muckross; Orlaith Condon c/o Denis O'Connor Arbutus Next week’s draw is on Monday 5 Aug @ 9pm for a jackpot of €7,600. Play online via Clubforce.
SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURES: After a thrilling game against Templenoe we secured our first point in the competition when the game ended in a draw. FT score Spa 1-14 Templenoe 2-11. This week’s Kerry Senior Club Championship fixtures have been confirmed, we will play Kenmare Shamrocks Friday at 7.15pm in Spa.
NOTES: Any items for the Spa notes please contact Club PRO on 085 7762411 or email pro.spa.kerry@gaa.ie before 7pm on Sundays.
Dr Crokes GAA
SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 2:14 Dingle 3:17. We travelled to Tralee on Saturday evening where we fell short to our west Kerry opponents. We got off to a fantastic start with a beautiful goal from Mark Fitzgerald in the opening 2 minutes. It was in the 28th minute that Dingle got their own maximum through a Paul Geaney goal, which left us trailing 1:05 to 1:09 at the break. The second half proved more challenging than the first when Dingle came out all guns blazing. Another Dingle goal early in to the half, and various Crokes injuries meant that it was going to be a tough battle to get on top of our opposition. Kieran O'Leary struck a bullet into the back of the Dingle goal to narrow the margin ever so slightly. Unfortunately the gap was too much, and Dingle ran out winners in the end. Next up is Milltown Castlemaine at home at 7pm on Saturday 3rd July.

All-Ireland Final on Sunday. NOTES: If anyone has anything they want to add to our club notes please email pro.drcrokes.kerry@gaa.ie.
Kilcummin GAA
LOTTO: There was no winner on Monday 29th July of the Jackpot for €12,500. Numbers drawn were 02, 07, 10, 24. Consolation prizes of €50 went to Sinead & Marian, Thomas O’Sullivan, Darragh Brosnan, and Fr. Larry Kelly. The next draw will be on Monday 12th August for Jackpot of €12,750. INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Kilcummin 0-11 Listowel Emmets 0-09. Our seniors prevailed in this hard-fought encounter in Castleisland on Saturday evening with a two-point victory over Listowel Emmets. Emmets started strongly and were five points up before we got our first score in the sixteenth minute courteous Sean O’Leary. With further points from Sean again, Cian Foley twice and Kevin Gorman we were level after 20 minutes. Emmets responded with two points, but Cian Foley scored his third to see us trail by one at half time six points to seven. The second half saw Emmets again drew two points ahead, but Gary O’Leary responded immediately and when Emmets scored their ninth point they again led by two. However with twenty minutes remaining they were not to score again. Paul O’Shea added three further points and Danny Cronin one as we held on to win on a score line 0-11 to 0-09. We now face Laune Rangers on Sunday next at 1pm in Killorglin. On the day James Williams, Sean O’Leary, Cian Foley and Dan Moynihan impressed. EAST KERRY JUNIOR DIV 2 FINAL: Kilcummin 2-21 Firies 3-16 (AET). Our junior team had a great victory on Wednesday last, in what was an enthralling encounter by two teams who were focused on attacking football. They kicked some great scores and kept the attendance on edge until the final seconds of extra time. Both teams deserve enormous credit for this sporting game that swung to and fro for the full 80 minutes. A first half goal by Shane McSweeney after a fine solo effort and a clinical second half finish by Jack Fogarty were pivotal, as were the nine points scored by the excellent Padraigh Moynihan, but this really was a great team effort with all twenty players used, contributing handsomely to the victory. One has to mention the performance of Shane McSweeney who as well as giving a "man of the match" performance gave great leadership and encouragement to all the young players around him. A word of praise also to the mentors Tom O’Shea and Dara Lehane as well as the entire panel of players who have made great strides and commitment throughout the year. Well done to all.
Fossa GAA
LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 28/07/2024 for a jackpot of €4,050 were 2, 15, 20, 22. There was no jackpot winner. The €40 consolation prize winners were Deirdre O’Shea, Online; Kieran Coffey, Online; Seamus Fogarty; Geary McCormick; Lorraine MacSweeney. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online via Clubforce.
SENIOR LADIES: Our Senior Ladies travelled to Moyvane to play Clounmacon/Moyvane ladies football team in Rd 2 of the Senior club league. With only 15 players available it looked a tough assignment and so it proved. Our well-resourced opposition played well all over the field and while there were some nice passages of Fossa play they were deservedly well ahead at the final whistle. Well done to all the players and supporters who made the effort, and thanks to our hosts for the spirit raising refreshments afterwards. Next up for this group is ISG.
KERRY MINOR LADIES: Hard luck to Seodhla Colleran and the Kerry minor ladies who were defeated by Cavan in the All-Ireland final on Saturday. Defeats are always tough to take but well done Seodhla, you did your club proud.
INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Fossa took on Beaufort in the first round of the Intermediate Championship in Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday evening. On a perfect evening for football, Fossa opened the scoring with a David Clifford free, Beaufort replied with scores from Darragh O’Connor, and Fergal Hallissey before David Clifford levelled matters with another free after eight minutes. This was as good as it got for Fossa in this half, while they enjoyed a fair share of possession, they left a few scores after them while Beaufort kept the scoreboard ticking and they held led at the break, 0-8 to 0-2. Fossa needed a good start to the second half, but it was Beaufort who hit the ground running and they quickly extended their lead to 8pts with scores from Jack O’Connor and Ciaran Kennedy. Fossa finally shook off the shackles and three points from David Clifford, Emmett and Cian O’Shea gave them hope. Beaufort hit back with two points before a David Clifford free got Fossa rolling again, a lovely Michael O’Dwyer point was followed by points from Paudie Clifford and Emmett O’Shea to leave just three points between the sides. In the 23rd minute, Beaufort were awarded a penalty, but Shane O’Sullivan repeated his heroics from last year and pulled off a magnificent save in the Lewis Road goal. This gave Fossa oxygen and a brilliant run by Paudie Clifford ended with him crashing the ball to the Beaufort net to leave the teams all square with three minutes left. Both sets of supporters were excited at this stage as the teams traded scores before Ciaran Kennedy kicked the insur-
ance score for Beaufort in injury time to leave them victors on a score of Beaufort 0-14, Fossa 1-10. While Fossa will be disappointed to have lost, they can take heart from the manner in which they fought back from what looked like a lost cause early in the second half. With players only coming back from holidays and injury, they will be looking for a better performance in the weeks ahead. Team; Shane O’Sullivan, Dan O’Connell, Brian Myers, Sam Buckley, Rian Colleran, Kieran O’Sullivan, Dan O’Keeffe, Paddy Sheehan, Cian O’Shea (0-1) Harry Buckley, Matt Rennie, Darren Ryan, Paudie Clifford (1-1), David Clifford (0-4), Emmett O’Shea (0-3), Michael O’Dwyer (01), Fintan Coffey.

Beaufort Golf Club (Ladies)
RESULTS: While the Olympics is taking place in Paris and with so many people hoping to win and break records, the Ladies Club at Beaufort had one of their members present a new record at the club over the weekend. On Sunday 28th July as the sun shone brightly, a Gold Star was playing down the fairways and strutting her stuff on the greens of a beautifully manicured Beaufort Golf Course. Karen Tess blew the lights out at the weekends V-Par competition. Karen had a super victory with a tremendous score of 12 up. Playing off 18 (15.0WHI) Karen finished the front 9 with one over and followed the back 9 with birdies on the 11th and 16th leaving her just 3 over on the back 9. WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES: A word of appreciation and thanks to all those who were involved in the setting up and in the organisation of the celebration of significant anniversaries of marriage vows at last Saturday evening Mass: it was truly a powerful event as evident in the numbers attending from 25 years to 55 years of marriage together. First a special thanks to Siobhan and the team for their efficiency in coordinating the event. Thank you also to Fr Kieran for his eloquent words on marriage which he shared with us in the Mass and for joining the couples for tea and cakes afterwards. The Altar was beautifully set up with a banner and flowers which set the scene for marking the occasion, also giving Geraldine, our photographer an opportunity to capture the moment. Thank you to all those who put their mark on the banner. The music and hymns wonderfully reflected the occasion, to Mick from the Rural Development who prepared the hall. The celebration would have been incomplete without the work of the “Kilcummin parish bakers” with their array of different homemade cakes and sandwiches. Evidence of appreciation was acknowledged by the numbers in the community who attended the banquet and the cutting of the luxurious Wedding Cake. Míle Buíochas on behalf of all.
CEMETERY MASSES: Upcoming Cemetery Masses will be celebrated in the following grounds. New Cemetery Mass: Monday 5th August at 7pm. Old Kilcummin Mass: Wednesday 7th August at 7.30pm.
