Following the HSE’s recent announcement that the reimbursement to people travelling to Belfast for a Catatact Procedure would be reduced, I raised the matter in the Dail with the Taoiseach and Minister for Health and the HSE.

They have agreed to extend the date of changes for the reimbursement until the end of August 2024.

Therefore I am advising anybody who is in need of a Cataract Procedure to book your place NOW on one of the three buses that I have arranged during the month of August.

Please contact myself or my office for full details and everything will be arranged for you.

I assure you that I will continue making strong epresentation until such time as the Government can provide a proper service for people in the Republic of Ireland. Until such time, the reimbursement needs to be reinstated to the full amount to ensure people can go to Belfast to get their sight back.

Major rescue operation as tour boat runs aground on Lough Leane

The Killarney Water Rescue, Search and Recovery Unit led a major rescue operation on Lough Leane on Sunday.

A large tour boat with upwards of 70 persons on board had gone aground in poor weather conditions close to Innisfallen Island.

“On the afternoon of Sunday, August 4, Killarney Water Rescue, Search and Recovery Unit received calls from Valentia Coastguard, Killarney Fire and Rescue and the Gardai regarding an emergency on Lough Leane,” explained Killarney Water Rescue chairman Kieran Caulfield

“At the time we were out on the Upper Lake on a training session. We immediately returned to Fivemile Bridge where we launched [the training boat].

“We had to recover the boat and travel by road to Ross Castle due to the very low water levels meaning it was not possible to take the boat down Old Weir.

“While en route to Ross Castle we received word to stand down as the tour boat had managed to get off the rocks

and return to Ross Castle where the passengers disembarked safely.”

“This was a significant event and could have become a very serious situation. The response involved emergency services from Fire, Gardai, Ambulance and Killarney Water Rescue, Search and Recovery Unit, as well as NPWS Park Rangers on the scene.

It is worth noting the only service with Search, Rescue and Recovery capabilities on the water in the region is Killarney Water Rescue, Search and Recovery Unit.”

A chocolate factory for Killarney?

Killarney could have its own chocolate factory after a planning application to build convert an existing premises on Bohereencael near the Glebe Car Park was lodged.

The people behind the Dunloe Lodge on College St have submitted a planning application to Kerry County Council seeking permission for a number of alterations to a building on the town centre lane.

The proposed development includes converting parts of the first and second floors from residential accommodation

into areas for chocolate product preparation.

The ground floor will also see changes, with plans for a new advertising sign and alterations to the wheelchair accessible toilet in the café area.

The application also seeks permission for external changes to the building, including alterations to the elevation and raising part of the roof at second floor level.

If approved, the expansion will create a new space for visitors to experience chocolate making demonstrations.

Killarney Water Rescue urgently needs a Search and Recovery

Sunday’s dramatic rescue operation highlighted the urgent need for a permanent base for the Killarney Water Rescue, Search and Recovery Unit.

Since the retirement of several members late last year and early this year their equipment is stored in several volunteers homes, as they have no base. (KWR) chairman Kieran Caulfield is warning that the lack of a headquarters has hampered the units ability to react to calls. In July KWR was unable to respond to an emergency callout at Lough Leane and the Shannon based Rescue 115 helicopter attended the scene instead.

In November 2022 well-known boat operator Donal ‘Dux’ O’Donoghue called for a dedicated search and rescue boathouse to be built near Ross Castle, after two male kayakers were overturned in bad weather. The kayakers were able to get to Lamb Island and raise the alarm The volunteer KWR service launched their rescue boat from Dundag near Muckross, nearly 8kms from Lamb Island. Their boat is currently stored at a private house and once they get a call they must navigate the notorious Killarney traffic before they can launch their boat.

“It is crucial new volunteers come forward for the vital service to be maintained and available to respond in such emergencies. Volunteers need not have any prior experience as training is provided. Volunteer roles include Shore Crews, Boat Crews, Recovery Divers, Fundraising, Social Media and Bookkeeping for example,” said Mr Caulfield.

White-tailed Eagle chicks released into wild at Killarney National Park

Tánaiste Michéal Martin TD, along with Minister for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform Malcolm Noonan TD, released four White-tailed Eagle chicks back into the wild at Killarney National Park.

The chicks are the first of 27 to be released in various locations around the country over the coming weeks, as part of an ongoing NPWS programme to reintroduce this once-extinct species back to Ireland.

Speaking at Killarney National Park, the Tánaiste said:

“It is a remarkable experience to witness these majestic birds in their natural habitat here at Killarney National Park. I’ve been following this reintroduction programme with real interest since the first chicks were released here at the Park in 2007. The White-tailed Eagle is an important part of our biodiversity, but also our heritage. Their reappearance in our skies is a source of wonder and interest for local and international visitors to Killarney National Park.

I would like to thank the NPWS staff, landowners and international partners from Norway for their work on the programme. We are all invested in the survival of these rare and beautiful birds, and have a part to play in keeping them safe.”

Once native to Ireland, the White-tailed Eagle became extinct in the nineteenth century. The White-tailed Eagle is a bird of prey and plays an important part in protecting our biodiversity. Since 2007 NPWS has been working with international partners, landowners and communities to reintroduce this iconic species to Irish skies. As part of phase two of this reintroduction project, a number of chicks are being brought over to Ireland from Norway. They are cared for in safe and secure locations until they are ready

to be released.

Minister Noonan said:

“This Programme is one of a number of NPWS initiatives underway to restore our biodiversity. This is the second phase of this reintroduction project, and we now have evidence of White-tailed Eagles breeding in counties further afield - from the south of the island in Cork right up to Donegal.

Killarney is a special place for the Whitetailed Eagle. This year, in Killarney National Park, two chicks have successfully fledged for the fourth year in a row.”

All of the chicks are fitted with satellite tags so that their movements can be tracked as they disperse and establish in new areas. The chicks are vulnerable to external factors such as adverse weather conditions, avian influenza and disease, and illegal poisonings.

Niall Ó Donnchú, Director General with the NPWS said:

“This reintroduction Programme really is a flagship initiative for NPWS, as it reflects so many elements of our conservation work – time and care, using science and best practice, combined with strong community engagement and partnership.”

Eamonn Meskell, Divisional Manager NPWS, Killarney National Park said:

“All of us at Killarney National Park welcome the White-tailed Eagles returning to nest, breed and fledge their chicks. The Park provides the perfect nesting habitat, with its old, tall oak and pine trees, quiet surroundings and an ample supply of fish available in the lakes for their survival.”

Tánaiste Michéal Martin TD, along with Minister for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform Malcolm Noonan TD, with Divisional Manager National Parks and WIldlife Service (NPWS) Eamonn Meskell, released four White-tailed Eagle chicks back into the wild at Killarney National Park.

Killarney Oaks Hotel expansion plans

The Killarney Oaks Hotel has announced plans for a significant extension.

Hotel management has lodged a planning application with Kerry County Council to expand the four-star hotel on Muckross Road.

The hotel, renowned for its warm hospitality and stunning views, hopes to add 35 new rooms to cater to increasing

demand.

The expansion will also include new amenities such as a function room at first-floor level and a covered outdoor seating dining area.

The plans include a revised main entrance to the hotel lobby, an updated entrance to the existing function room lobby and new balconies to three existing first-floor bedrooms.

Crokes return to The Cricket Field to mark Street League centenary

Dr Crokes will be reeling back the years when the club celebrates the Centenary of the Killarney Street League.

The Street League was played for the first time in 1924 at the Cricket Field, Muckross Road when four teams, one each representing College Street, Main Street, New Street, and High Street took part.

The 2024 first-round games get underway at 6.30 pm on Friday at the Lewis Rd playing pitches and will continue each Friday.

SCHEDULE

Round 1: August 9, Lewis Rd. Round 2 August 16, Lewis Rd. pitches, 6.30 pm

Round 3: August 23, The Cricket Field, 6.30 pm (Muckross Rd, on the banks of the Flesk River) and at the Fitzgerald Stadium 7.30 pm.

Round 4: (final) August 30 at Lewis Rd.

The 100-year-old very valuable Silver Street Cup dating back to 1924 will be presented on the evening of the final by club president Jackie Looney followed by the annual Summer Barbeque - the club’s social highlight of the summer.

“We are making an extra effort with this year’s Street League to mark the centenary of this wonderful project linking our juveniles and adult members in Dr Crokes' summer celebration”, said David Byrne, Crokes Juvenile Secretary and leader of

the project assisted by a great backup team from the Saturday morning Academy coaching sessions.

Former Dr Crokes and Kerry Stars will coach each team. Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper is in charge of College Street, the High St manager is Johnny Buckley, former Kerry Ladies star Amanda Brosnan is the New Street coach and Kieran O’Leary is in charge of the Main Street team.

Will sharpshooter ‘Gooch’, the holder of five All-Ireland medals, repeat the College Street win of the inaugural 1924 final against New Street on the score of 4-4 to 2-1, refereed by Small Jer O’Leary, or will Brosnan, the former Crokes star with Kerry LGFA surprise everyone? New St were known locally as ‘The Boys below the Bridge.

Killarney mourns loss of beloved auctioneer and baker

The town was saddened to learn of the passing of John Buckley, a well-known auctioneer and former owner of a popular bakery on the High Street.

Mr. Buckley was a familiar and respected figure in the community, known for his fair dealings and warm personality. John made his mark on the town by running the successful Killarney Bakery for many years. Later he became a respected auctioneer. Outside of business, he was a director and chairman of the Killarney Race Company and a longtime member of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. He also served on the national executive of Fianna Fáil for several years.

Mr Buckley, of Aghadoe and formerly of Caherbarnagh, Rathmore passed peacefully on July 30. His funeral took place last Friday and Saturday. He is survived by his wife Patricia, children Shane, Denise and Orla, daughter-in-law Brigid, son-in-law Peter and many other relatives and friends.

of Dr Crokes.

“I wish to express my appreciation to David Byrne, our Juvenile Secretary, and all of his helpers for organising this historic Centenary project and for their thorough preparations for the next four Friday evenings, followed by the annual summer Barbeque for all of our members.”

The Tralee and Killarney rivalry kicked in immediately after College Street won the inaugural Street League.

Rock Street (later Austin Stacks) winners of the Tralee Town League challenged the Killarney winners. Paul Russell was only 18 years' old when he played at right corner back on the College Street team which won the 1924 Killarney Street League title. He impressed the Kerry selectors so much in the Street League that he went straight into the Kerry senior football team.

All-Ireland winner Buckley has mustered a fine High Street team but O’Leary, his former Kerry and Crokes colleague, will be encouraging Main Street to spring a surprise.

“Even though Dr Crokes was founded in 1886, and we had won the Kerry Senior Football Championship in 1901,1912,1913,1914, there was little or no football in Kerry during the War of Independence and the Civil War.

Young people longed for games and the Kerryman newspaper of October 18, 1924, reported that at a meeting of Dr Crokes Killarney, it was decided to form an Inter-Street League for the winter months and to present the winners with a silver Cup,” said Eoin Brosnan, the former All-Ireland winner and current chairman

Still a student at St Brendan’s College his first time wearing the green and gold was in the delayed 1923 All-Ireland final (played in September 1924), narrowly beaten by Dublin.

He was the automatic choice for right half-back and went on to win six All-Ireland medals by the age of 26, still the only Killarney man to do so.

In 1924 it was boys only who were catered for. The LGFA wasn’t formed until 1974 and it's fitting that the 2024 Street League caters for boys and girls. The latter are very prominent at the Saturday Academies.

Senior club player Kayleigh Cronin, AllStar and now All-Ireland LGFA winner as well as TG4’s Laoch na hImeartha in Kerry’s spectacular win at Croke Park on Sunday last will will be attending the games encouraging young girls to dream that one-day success can be theirs at Croke Park.

Muckross duo to contest European regatta for Ireland

Following the record success for Irish rowing in Paris, excitement is building once more for two talented rowers from Muckross Rowing Club who have been selected to don the green jersey.

Ian Coffey and Daniel Fleming are among a select group of just five male and nine female rowers who will race for Ireland at the Coupe de la Jeunesse Regatta for European Under 19 rowers.

The Coupe Regatta is an annual rowing competition that features crews from 16 European countries. This year’s edition takes place in Racice, Czech Republic from August 9 to 11.

The high standard of competition at the event has again seen a rigorous selection process within the competing nations.

Ian and Daniel’s selection journey began in the autumn of 2023 when a long series of trial events commenced.

In parallel with their ongoing club training over the winter season and through to the summer, both Ian and Daniel contested several national trial events on land and water, which saw the field of trialists progressively narrowed.

The final Irish crew selection was announced at the end of June.

Ian is the son of Emir and Maurice Coffey, from Coolies in Muckross and Daniel is

the son of Eileen and Joe Fleming from Faughcullia, Muckross.

Ian and Daniel have been rowing with their local club since the age of 12 and attend St. Brendan’s College, Killarney, where they are preparing to enter their Leaving Certificate year.

The progress of Ian and Daniel to the national stage has been supported and guided by a dedicated coaching group in Muckross, including Ian’s father Maurice, Elaine Daly, Noel Kelleher, Kieran Murphy and Micheal O’Suilleabhain.

The international selection for the Muckross duo is a testament to their dedication and commitment to training over recent years. This year, the rowers have challenged strongly in top national competition, including a gold medal win in the Lough Rynn Grand League Regatta in Leitrim in May.

At the Irish Rowing Championships in July, Daniel qualified for the A final of the Men’s Junior Single. In the final of the Men’s Junior Quad, Daniel and Ian finished fourth alongside clubmates Ronan

Fahy and Cillian Leslie.

On the third and final day of the Irish Championship Regatta, the duo were impressive winners in their qualifying time trial race of the Junior Double event, but illness denied Ian a chance to challenge in the final.

Since the national championships, the Irish squad for the Coupe Regatta has come together for a training camp based at the National Rowing Centre in Farran, Cork.

Joining Ian and Daniel for Racice are Adam Kenny (Athlone Boat Club) and Eoin Balfe (St. Michael’s Rowing Club, Limerick), making up the Ireland Men’s Quad crew. Richard Heaslip of Athlone Boat Club completes the Irish male lineup and will contest the Men’s Single.

The Women’s Quad and Coxless Four events feature strong Munster rep-

resentation with six of the eight female rowers from Cork and Limerick. At the training camp, Ian and Daniel are also in the company of fellow Kerry oarsman Sean Morris of Tralee Rowing Club, who has been selected to compete in the U19 World Championships.

“Everyone in Muckross Rowing Club is incredibly proud of the achievements of Daniel and Ian, along with their coaches. Since 1996, 11 Muckross rowers have been selected for the Coupe event. Ian and Daniel bridge a gap of 28 years since the club last sent a male rower to the Coupe when Sean Casey raced in the 1996 Coupe Regatta in Amsterdam. Sean later went on to represent Ireland at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 along with fellow Muckross rowers Paul Griffin and Cathal Moynihan,” said Muckross Rowing Club PRO Tim O’Shea.

Pedal for Grace will return for third year

Vision Ireland has announced that the hugely successful Kerry-based cycle Pedal for Grace event is returning for its third year on September 7.

Last year the event, held by Grace O'Sullivan's family and her local Village of Firies, raised over €25,000 for Vision Ireland services, services that ensure thousands of those living with sight loss in Ireland can participate in society.

ing support from our local community and beyond. It's something everyone in the Village looks forward to.

Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin TD and Fáilte Ireland have announced that Killarney Brewing & Distilling Visitors Experience is among the five venues awarded a total of €1 million through the Platforms for Growth Gala Dinner Venues Investment Scheme.

The investment has been allocated to five projects to facilitate the development of gala dinner venues of scale in four of Ireland’s business events hubsDublin, Kerry, the Shannon Region and Galway.

This investment will go towards the development and enhancement of the venues, to enable them to compete to win international business events for Ireland. It is estimated that €67 million worth of incremental business events could be delivered for the country over a 5-year period on the back of this investment.

Nestled on the shores of The Lakes of Killarney and surrounded by the National Park, Killarney Brewing & Distilling Co. is located on the picturesque Ring of Kerry with captivating panoramic views of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. It offers a full suite of versatile event spaces including modern gala dining for up to 250.

Gala dinners are a key component of international conferences, incentive trips, and large corporate meetings and Ire-

Killarney Distillery awarded Fáilte Ireland funding

land’s current gala dinner venue offering is not sufficient to deal with demand.

The Gala Dinner Venues Investment Scheme was established to accommodate demand in the market, and to ensure the sustainable growth of business events revenue, which is central to Fáilte Ireland’s sustainable tourism agenda.

FIVE VENUES NATIONWIDE

The venues receiving capital investment funding from Fáilte Ireland under the Gala Dinner Venues Investment Scheme are:

Killarney Brewing & Distilling Visitors Experience Limited, Kerry Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick Claregalway Castle, Galway

Custom House Quarter Ltd., Dublin

St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, Galway

Today’s announcement is the culmination of a competitive application process which began in 2022. The projects receiving investment were strategically selected under strict eligibility criteria, including an ability to deliver not only on capacity (350 diners for Dublin venues and 250 diners for venues in regional Ireland) but also on accessibility, in terms of their proximity to one of Ireland’s business events hubs.

The venues were also required to deliver on the ‘wow’ factor, which means they had to offer an exceptional venue, in a spectacular location, which would

instantly appeal to an international audience. The selected venues will be required to adhere to and promote sustainability best practice in the operation of the venue and should support the business events industry to deliver events complying with best practice environmental sustainability measures.

Minister Catherine Martin said: “The business events industry is a key component of Ireland’s tourism offering and driver of economic benefit for Ireland, with an estimated contribution of almost €800 million to our economy and supporting 20,000 jobs. Today’s investment announcement will ensure world-class venues are developed that will attract international business events to our key business events hubs. This is critical to strengthening Ireland’s reputation internationally as a leading business events destination and will have far reaching impact on Ireland’s tourism sector and the wider Irish economy.”

Paul Kelly, CEO of Fáilte Ireland added: “Business event delegates inject approximately three times more revenue into local economies than leisure travellers. Business events also benefit the wider tourism ecosystem by driving high-yield business often during mid-week and off-season periods, complementing leisure tourism patterns. The overall objective of this focused capital investment

scheme is to facilitate the development of ‘wow’ gala dinner venues of scale in Ireland’s premier business events hubs. We were encouraged to see the calibre of applicants and we are pleased that the five awarded projects will add truly best-in-class venues to the Irish venue portfolio.”

KILLARNEY BREWING & DISTILLING CO

Managing Director of Killarney Brewing & Distilling Co. Barry Spellman said: “We are delighted to receive this investment and vote of confidence from Fáilte Ireland. It will significantly enhance Killarney Brewing & Distilling's capacity to attract and host international business events. This development showcases our venue's unique 5-star 'wow' factor and Killarney’s breathtaking landscape. We thank Fáilte Ireland and Minister Catherine Martin for supporting our vision to deliver world-class gala dinner experiences."

The Gala Dinner Venues Investment Scheme is a part of Fáilte Ireland’s €150 million Platforms for Growth Programme, which falls under the Government's Project Ireland 2040 strategy. The Platforms for Growth Programme targets projects that have the greatest potential to grow tourism throughout the year.

Irish Kidney Association host coffee morning

The Killarney branch of the Irish Kidney Association recently hosted a successful coffee morning at Polly’s in The Ross Hotel.

The event was held as part of Organ Donation and Transplant Week to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation.

Attendees enjoyed delicious coffee and treats while learning about the critical need for organ donors.

Funds raised on the day will go towards supporting the work of the Irish Kidney Association and towards the upkeep of its dedicated holiday home near Muckross.

Kilcummin Bog Walks to get €16,000 in funding

A local amenity walk in Kilcummin will get €16,000 under the Peatlands and Natura Community Engagement Scheme 2024.

The Kilcummin Bog Walks is one of 36 projects nationwide and one of just three in Kerry to receive funding.

Malcolm Noonan TD, the Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform, announced more than €458,000 on Thursday.

“I am really impressed by the diverse and creative initiatives put forward by such active community and volunteer groups and environmental organisations,” said Minister Noonan.

“The Peatlands and Natura Community Engagement Scheme is a collaborative scheme which draws on the local community’s deep connection with our natural heritage. Through empowering local communities, we can safeguard our precious ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and mitigate the impacts of climate change, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come."

The funding can be put towards the development and maintenance of amenities or public outreach, such as the production of information booklets, brochures and training manuals, awareness and education and hosting of seminars with expert speakers.

Cahill hopeful

of Fianna Fáil nomination as Kelleher bows out

Councillor Michael Cahill says that he believes he is best placed to join Minister Norma Foley TD on the General Election ticket, in order to secure a second seat for the party in the constituency.

Cahill has been nominated by his Cumann and many members of the Fianna Fáil party in Kerry, to be selected at their Convention in Tralee next week

He said that taking into account experience, vote-getting ability, work ethic, geography, etc, he is best placed to win a seat in the General Election contest to represent the people of Kerry.

“I have shown myself to be a consistent vote-getter in Local Elections for over 30 years, which proves that I have been delivering for the people of South, Mid and formerly West Kerry for many years now

and they know that they can trust me to represent them and their families,” said the Rossbeigh based Councillor.

“I have worked hard for all my constituents for the 34 years that I have been a member of Kerry County Council and I believe I can continue this in Dáil Éireann, if selected by my party to run and secure a seat in the General Election. Living in Mid-Kerry, I am ideally placed in the middle of the constituency and easily accessible to all residents” said Councillor Cahill.

"I am 58 years of age and between my late father and I, we have almost 65 years of service given to our county and our people and yet neither of us have ever been given the opportunity to contest a General Election on behalf of the Party.”

Meanwhile, Killarney Municipal District councillor Niall Kelleher has confirmed he will not go forward for selection.

Kilcummin remember

Ger Healy at LGFA

50th celebrations

Kilcummin Ladies Gaelic Football Club joined clubs from all over Ireland to celebrate 50 years of the association nationally with a special night held in the club recently.

A large crowd attended what was a great evening including players from U8 up to Senior, Mothers and Others, parents, family and club members, friends and lots of people from the local community. The evening kicked off with a festival of football in which all teams participated. This was followed by fabulous refreshments in the club hall and lots of reminiscing about some of the great memories and highlights for Kilcummin LGFA over the years.

A very special part of the evening was devoted to remembering Kilcummin LGFA’s esteemed clubman, Ger Healy, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

A presentation of a memorial plaque was made to the Healy family to recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution Ger made to Kilcummin LGFA over the years.

He was remembered fondly on the night as not only a member of the club but its heart and soul and the large crowd gathered was testament to the high esteem in which he was held by everyone who knew him. G er held various positions on the LGFA Executive and as a mentor and coach to several teams over the years, and had an incredibly positive influence on all the players who wore the Kilcummin jersey.

Eats + Beats 2024 A magical weekend in Dunloe

Eats + Beats 2024, held in the beautifully rewilded setting of Dunloe, Killarney, was a truly unforgettable experience.

This year's festival was a harmonious blend of music, food, and nature, creating a magical atmosphere that captivated attendees from start to finish. The festival kicked off with a mid-morning drizzle, but this did little to dampen the spirits of the crowd. Local culinary stars Hungry Donkey, Gorilla Kitchen, and Muckross Ice Cream tantalised taste buds with their delicious offerings, while 9 White Deer and Pigs Lane kept revellers refreshed with a superb selection of beverages.

As the rain cleared, the festival truly came alive. All music stages showcased an impressive lineup of talent. Lucy June, Cáit Ní Riain, and Paddy Mulcahy delivered captivating original music, setting a beautiful tone for the day. Kez, An Draio, and Wild Notions continued to impress with their unique sounds. But it was the energetic performance of Two Time Polka that truly ignited the crowd. MegaTrad seamlessly followed, maintaining the high energy as the day turned to night. The festival's headline act, Kíla, delivered a mesmerising performance that left the

audience spellbound. Simultaneously, DJ sets from High Fidelity Sound, Moody C, Shiels, Captain Birdsong, Chris Carey, Steve 4D, Monkeys With Car Keys, Kev O'Leary and Archive kept the party going in the forest, creating an electric atmosphere that extended well into the night.

Beyond the music and food, Eats + Beats offered a truly immersive experience. Children ran free, enjoying face painting, dancing, yoga and crafts. The festival's artistic and decor team lead by Poppy Copeland deserve immense credit for transforming the site into a magical wonderland. Utilising primarily upcycled materials and lighting, they created stunning features that brought the festival to life, especially after dark.

The Killarney Folk Collective, the festival organisers, can be incredibly proud of their achievement. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week chief organiser Kevin Leahy expressed his gratitude to the local volunteers and businesses for their support and the many hours of stellar work put in by the Casey brothers Colm and Dan as well as Kieran Somers.

A special mention of thanks also went to O'Sullivan Sounds and The Rite Group who looked after the sound and lighting. Plans are already in motion for an even bigger and better festival in 2025.

The Kerry Ring

In my life I’ve travelled some, I’ve travelled near and far I’ve travelled here and there by plane, by train and motor car

Now there’s a spot that I’ve been in, its praises I must sing Where the Wild Atlantic ocean flows and it’s called the Kerry Ring.

From Killarney to Killorglin town where King Puck can be seen

To Glenbeigh village and to Kells on the road to Cahersiveen

To Waterville, Caherdaniel, Derrynane and Sneem so fair

To Castlecove, Valentia and the town of sweet Kenmare.

Yes, I’ve surveyed the hand of God on that rugged Kerry coast And speaking as an honest man, who is not inclined to boast The sights I’ve seen, they are supreme, God must love Ireland To make the Bull, the Cow and Calf and the lovely Silver Strand.

To make the bold old Mountain Stage, its beauty unsurpassed And I’m sure that when the world is o’er, he will leave it until last Its emerald landscape, sheer delight, its woodland hills and vales It’s a place that you could read about in a book of fairy tales.

The mountains high that touch the sky, where the scenery’s sublime

Where a gentle breeze can sway the trees, and all that’s still is time

It’s there I want my soul to be, when death an end will bring Once more to see, the majesty, that is the Kerry Ring.

Killarney Valley Athletics Club has set a new benchmark for excellence in 2024, achieving unprecedented success in national and regional competitions.

The club's athletes have garnered a remarkable 55 national medals and 128 Munster medals, setting a new record for the club. This extraordinary haul is a testament to the dedication, skill, and hard work of the athletes and coaches alike.

One of the standout features of this year has been the performance of the club's relay teams. Killarney Valley Athletics Club has had seven relay teams compete at the national level, showcasing their strength in teamwork and coordination. This achievement highlights the club's depth of talent and its ability to compete at the highest levels of Irish athletics.

The club's men’s senior 4x 400 relay team placed second in the national senior indoor championships and the U20 mixed 4 x 400 team were crowned national champions whilst setting a national championships record.

The club is also celebrating the crowning of ten national champions in 2024. These champions have excelled across a range of disciplines, underlining the club's versatility and comprehensive training programs.

The disciplines in which the club has achieved national medals are diverse, including all jumps—long jump, high jump, triple jump, pole vault—as well as all sprints from 60 meters to 400 meters, and middle-distance events up to 1500 meters.

This breadth of success speaks to the club's commitment to nurturing talent across all track and field events.

Killarney Valley Athletics Club's athletes have consistently represented Ireland on the international stage since 2017. This year, Dominik Wasila has continued this

proud tradition by being selected for Irish International representation in the long jump.

Wasila's achievement underscores the club's role in developing athletes who can compete and excel at the highest levels of international athletics.

In addition to their competitive success, the club's athletes have been recognized for their academic and athletic potential.

Several athletes have secured full athletics scholarships, furthering their education and training at prestigious institutions. Most recently, Oisin Lynch has taken up a scholarship at Adams State University in Colorado, joining the ranks of Killarney Valley athletes who have gone on to combine higher education with elite athletic training.

Looking to the future, Killarney Valley Athletics Club has set ambitious goals to enhance its facilities and support its growing membership.

The club is planning to build a dedicated pole vault training area, providing athletes with the specialized infrastructure needed to excel in this challenging discipline.

This new facility will be a significant asset, allowing for more focused and effective training sessions.

Additionally, the club is launching a fundraising campaign to maintain and repair its well-used athletics track as well as finance the building of the Pole Vault area. The track is experiencing significant wear and tear due to heavy usage, and continuous maintenance is essential to ensure it remains in top condition for training and competition.

The club is seeking community support to

build up a fund dedicated to these repairs and the Pole Vault construction, ensuring that athletes have access to high-quality training surfaces for years to come.

“The achievements of Killarney Valley Athletics Club in 2024 are a source of immense pride for the club and the local community,” said coach Jer Griffin.

“The club's record-breaking year is a reflection of its robust coaching programs, the dedication of its athletes, and the unwavering support from the local com-

munity.

“As Killarney Valley Athletics Club continues to build on this success, it remains a beacon of excellence in Irish athletics, inspiring future generations of athletes to strive for greatness while investing in the infrastructure necessary to sustain its legacy.”

St Paul's Basketball Club will be swapping their basketballs for orbs of a smaller version when they host their Golf Classic in Beaufort Golf Club on August 24.

This year's Classic will again be held in memory of the late Connie Brosnan. Connie, who passed away in March 2020, was a stalwart of St Pauls, serving as Team Manager in the 1990s for the team, tending to the squad's every need and more lately as the welcoming and friendly Venue officer at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. His affable nature led

to many friendships and Connie was of course a keen and avid golfer so it is apt and fitting that his memory should be associated with the Classic.

The event takes place at the picturesque and pristine Beaufort course and is open to teams of four for the great value of €300 per team. The sponsorship of a tee box for €100 is also available.

For further details on tee times or tee box sponsorship from Joey Sheehan on 087 6248383, Sean Brosnan on 087 2065133 and Maurice O'Donoghue on 087 6863269.

Heroes' welcome in Killarney for Kerry Ladies

A scene reminiscent of the county's storied football tradition, the Kerry Ladies football team made a triumphant return home to a jubilant welcome in Killarney on Monday evening.

After securing their first All-Ireland Senior Football Championship title in 31 years with a resounding victory over Galway, the team was met by thousands of adoring fans lining the streets.

The homecoming parade, which saw the team travel through the heart of Killarney, was a sea of green and gold as supporters young and old turned out to celebrate their heroes. A carnival atmosphere filled the air. The homecoming event was a fitting culmination to a historic campaign for the Kerry Ladies football team. Their victory has not only ignited a new wave of enthusiasm for women's sport in the county but has also captured the hearts of the county.

Irelands impressive new line of Olympians

Ireland’s impressive new line of Olympians is leading Team Ireland to its greatest ever Olympic campaign. With seven confirmed medals, there could be more to come.

Our greatest ever haul of medals, surpassing that of London 2012, places Ireland twelfth in the countries’ rankings on Day 13. Per capita, we are currently the most impressive nation, and we are not slowing down yet. We’ve broken records, solidified names in Olympic history, and introduced new stars to their respective sports. With a country of just over 5 million people, we sit higher on the medal table than the likes of Brazil, New Zealand, and Spain. At the same time, we are sitting just below the behemoth countries of Canada, Italy, and Germany. It is an equally impressive and exciting time for Irish sport.

Our new star swimmer, Daniel Wiffen, has reached unprecedented heights, surpassing any Irish swimmer in the past, securing a gold medal in the 800m freestyle and a ‘disappointing’ (according to Wiffen), bronze medal in the 1500m. It is understood that Wiffen is looking for more glory in the 10000m marathon swim down the river Seine, hoping to etch his name into Olympic and Irish history. Sligo’s Mona McSharry has also secured a bronze medal in the 100-meter breaststroke, becoming a two-time Olympian in what she claims will most likely be her last ever Olympics. It is Irish glory in a

sector where we have lacked previous success since the awkward campaign of Michelle Smith in 1996, promising great things for the future.

Staying on the water, Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy have written more history. Gold in the lightweight double sculls has sealed back-to-back Olympic golds for the Skibbereen men since Tokyo, with Paul in particular becoming a three-time Olympic medalist,

winning silver in 2016 alongside brother Gary. Evidently, the ‘pull like a dog’ tactic has worked again. O’Donovan is now our widest-spanning Olympic champion, carving his name into Irish sports legend, with Fintan McCarthy, sitting on two successive medals, not far behind.

The Pommel Horse, an intense series of artistic gymnastics, has a new Olympic champion, with the prestigious gold

Taylor Swift concert cancelled due to terror threats in Vienna away Home

Two people have been arrested following the cancellation of a concert that was set to hold over 170,000 people.

A 19-year-old and a 17-year-old have been arrested by Austrian police after alleged threats of Islamist attacks at the Taylor Swift three-night concert. It is understood that the 19-year-old had collected chemicals that may have been

used to make a bomb, a senior Austrian security official has stated. A third person, also 17, has been taken into custody as part of the investigation. Chemical substances and “technical contraptions” were found within the prime suspect’s home, who is believed to have pledged allegiance to a radical Islamic state group. The evidence of a possible attack prompted the final decision to cancel the concert.

medal falling into the hands of Down’s Rhys McClenaghan. Our most recent gold medalist so far, it was a medal almost three years in the making. Disappointment in Tokyo secured sweet redemption in Paris, a first-time Irish winner for the Pommel Horse that has opened Irish eyes to the craft and skill level of the sport. A story that began so unfortunately has reached a beautiful peak.

To continue this campaign of breathtaking achievements, boxer Kellie Harrington has just become a two-time Olympic champion, winning back-toback golds after defeating Chinese Wenlu Lang in an impressive lightweight final performance. Harrington has now etched her name into both Olympic and Irish history, her victory proving to be a swan song as she announced retirement just after.

As we stand, Ireland has not finished yet. Sarah Lavin is through to the semi-finals of the Women’s 100m hurdles, with Mark English qualifying for the Men’s 800m semi-final after reaching second in his heat. And after another impressive semi-final, Rashidat Adeleke is through to her final of the Women’s 400m, becoming the first ever Irish sprinter in an Olympic final.

Our athlete in the Women’s Heptathlon, Kate O’Connor, is also searching for history, competing in the 100m Hurdles, High Jump, the Shot Put, and the 200m.

To succeed in one sector of sport is hard enough, but it is truly stunning to succeed in multiple. With currently four golds and three bronze medals, we sit in a great place. It is a campaign to look back on with admiration for the performance of our athletes, with our largest group of Olympians warranting our largest group of medals.

Taylor Swift has yet to comment on the action, and organizers have said that fans will receive refunds for the tickets. It is believed that more people are involved in the terror threat, with “abstract danger” that is still a force that security is taking seriously. It is unknown whether a bomb was created, however, Austrian sources claim that the chemical substances found point towards the specific intent. “The threat could be recognized early on, tackled, and a tragedy prevented,” Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has said. “The situation surrounding the apparently planned terror attack in Vienna was very serious.”

Robot dentist completes world's first full procedure

The first human has recently undergone the very first automated dental procedure by a robot.

The fascinating technology, which includes a robotic arm, artificial intelligence, and 3D imaging, is “enhancing precision and efficiency of dental procedures” according to Chief Executive and Founder Dr. Chris Ciriello. It is claimed that with this technology, dental procedures such as crown placements and fillings could be completed in just 15 minutes.

The US-based company Perceptive un-

derstands that the robotic device is still a work in progress. It is also not currently on sale and does not have clearance from its regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Perceptive insists the technology is safe and reliable, claiming it will “transform dentistry”.

The success of the first human procedure is understood to be a groundbreaking development in dental care, sending shockwaves throughout the community. The development of such technology could potentially revolutionize how dental procedures are delivered.

Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner takes X to

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has initiated legal proceedings against X, formerly known as Twitter, over concerns about the platform's use of user data to train its AI models.

The case, filed in the High Court, alleges that X has violated the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by processing personal data without adequate legal basis and transparency.

At the heart of the dispute is X's AI-powered search tool, Grok, which is believed to have been trained on vast amounts of user data collected from the platform.

Cryptocurrency seizure and arrests in Dublin

A seizure of €6.5 million and the arrest of three people has just been made as part of an investigation into the darknet market and the growth of money laundering.

The two men, aged 23 and 49, as well as a 32-year-old woman, were arrested by Gardaí on Monday after the search of a house in north County Dublin. The cryptocurrency, which consisted of Bitcoin and Monero, was seized with a market value of €6.5 million. Other assets such as luxury watches and two vehicles were seized, with an overall value of €340,000.

Detective Superintendent Michael Mullen of the Garda National Cyber Crime

Bureau (GNCCB) stated: “The arrests of the three individuals and the assets seized are the result of a highly complex investigation into criminal darknet marketplace activities.”

The investigations into the offense demonstrate a determination to stop this new online source of criminality.

The ‘darknet’ that was shut down during this raid was described as an encrypted part of the internet that was not visible to the public without specific software, often used for illegal purposes. “I would also like to reassure the public that this darknet market, where illegal goods and services were for sale, is no longer in operation,” Mr. Mullen said.

Tsunami warning in Japan after 7.1 magnitude earthquake

A powerful earthquake measuring a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 struck off the eastern coast of the island of Kyushu, Japan, triggering a tsunami advisory from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Court

The DPC maintains that X failed to obtain explicit consent from users for this purpose and has not provided sufficient information about how their data is being used.

The data protection regulator is seeking a court order to halt or restrict X's processing of user data for AI training until it can demonstrate compliance with GDPR requirements. The case is expected to have significant implications for the broader tech industry, as it could set a precedent for how companies handle user data in the context of AI development. X has yet to issue a formal statement in response to the legal action.

The agency detected small tsunami waves along parts of Kyushu’s coastline. Since the Fukushima disaster of 2011, caused by an earthquake and tsunami, caution has been exercised in areas like Kyushu, which host nuclear power plants.

The quake most strongly shook Nichinan City and caused reports of broken windows at Miyazaki Airport. There have been no reports of casualties, serious injuries, or significant structural damage.

The primary concern is the potential for a tsunami following an earthquake of this magnitude. A tsunami warning has been issued for Japan’s coastal regions, urging the public to evacuate the water and coastal areas immediately.

The Killarney Matchmaker

The advantages of joining a matchmaking agency

My name is Eithne Buckley and I set up Twoheartsmeet Matchmaking Agency back in 2011.

I have spent the last 13 years matching single, separated, divorced and widowed people from their mid 30s to late 70s age bracket.

Here are some of the questions I get asked by people thinking of joining up. What criteria do you take into account when matching two people?

The main criteria are personality traits and values. Once I have someone within your ideal age bracket and location, these are the things I look for. I also compare physical attributes such as height and build as well as occupations, backgrounds, and level of education. What is your level of success?

As I take my work as a matchmaker very seriously and want to maintain the good reputation I have built up over the years, I am very successful and have a very high percentage of couples who stay together. On average, around 70% or 80% of couples that I match up, end up in a longterm relationship.

What is the difference between joining an online dating site and joining Twoheartsmeet?

As people pay a membership fee to join Twoheartsmeet, this shows they are serious about looking for a long-term partner. As they have invested money in joining up, they show they are looking for commitment and not just a casual relationship or one-night stand.

How many matches can I expect to get? I don’t limit the number of introductions I offer people. As long as I have someone who I think you would be interested in meeting I will allow you to see their profile and photo. If both of you agree to meet I will exchange first names and phone numbers.

What’s the next step if I decide I want to join?

We would make an appointment to meet up to complete the profiling. This takes place over a cup of coffee in a quiet corner of a hotel where we won’t be disturbed and takes between 60-90 minutes. What happens after the profiling is completed?

I will type up your profile and email or WhatsApp it to you so you can have a read of it and you can make any changes if you want. If it doesn’t work out with the first person you match me with, how long will I have to wait for a follow-up introduction?

It depends on your criteria. When I have someone else who I feel is a compatible match for you, I will send you their profile. We offer people a two-year membership package and you will receive introductions until you meet someone you want to stay with.

How to successfully start a new job

The reverse of my last column when I talked about how to leave a job, this time I am focussing on how to successfully start a new job.

So you have left your old job and, I hope, been able to take a break before starting your new role. Exciting times! This new role maybe more senior and involve a new level of responsibility that you may not be used to. The first thing I always recommend is up-dating your LinkedIn profile on your new role – a very easy way to tell your contacts where you have moved to.

The new firm should have a plan of induction in place to cover all the basics like IT, Finance, HR, Compliance, Governance, H&S etc. Do all the training required – don't skip any because you want to get stuck into the job. The training is there to help you do the job. Introduce yourself to everyone – remember you will be building relationships with all of your colleagues. If you are taking responsibility for a team, schedule some time to meet them individually. Listen to what they have to say before forming any quick judgements – they have been with the employer longer than you have.

Arrange to sit down with your own manager and agree priorities for the

first month, three months, 6 months etc. And make sure you have follow-up meetings to communicate how you are progressing, issues etc. Always manage your time properly – don't over promise and then under deliver –if you are struggling, speak up! If you make a mistake, tell someone. The longer you leave it, the more difficult it will be to rectify. And you never want to be in a situation where you are ‘covering up’ your own mistakes. Ask questions and get clarity on how things work – you are not expected to know everything! If you see things that can be done differently, try not to change everything on day 1 – understand why it’s done in this particular way and then, when you have the knowledge, begin to engage with people on a change process. And finally, never ever get involved in office politics or gossip! You won’t know anything about the history of the situation or the individuals involved and making snap judgments or giving opinions could be seen as unprofessional – which it is!

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Deferring payment of the Local Property Tax (LPT)

In certain circumstances, you can delay paying some or all of your Local Property Tax (LPT) until a later date.

This is known as a deferral. If you meet the deferral requirements, you can choose to defer the LPT until your financial circumstances improve or the property is sold. However, this does not mean that you are exempt from the LPT. Interest is charged on the deferred amount and the deferred amount remains a charge on the property.

If you qualify for partial deferral, you can defer 50% of your LPT and pay the other 50%.

DEFERRAL OF LPT BASED ON INCOME

You may qualify for full or partial deferral of LPT for a property you own and live in if your income is below a certain amount. You qualify for deferral each year based on your estimated gross income for the previous year. So, for example, if you were liable for LPT on 1 November 2023 (the liability date) you would estimate your gross income for 2023 to see whether you qualify for deferral or partial deferral of the payment in 2024.

If you claimed a deferral for a year and your circumstances change you must inform Revenue.

DEFERRAL FOLLOWING A DEATH

If one member of a couple who qualified for a deferral dies, the deferral will remain in place until the next valuation date (currently 1 November 2025) and the income of the surviving person is not taken into account until then. On 1 November 2025, the surviving person may make a claim for deferral of the tax. If you satisfy the conditions, you will qualify for deferral. If you do

not qualify for deferral after 2025, the amount that was deferred up to the end of 2025 may continue to be deferred. Interest will continue to be charged on the deferred amount in the usual way.

If you inherit a property from someone who is not your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant, Revenue may allow the deferral to continue if you apply for a deferral and qualify. The transfer of the property to you means that the tax deferred (plus interest) becomes payable at that point if you do not meet the conditions for a deferral in your own right.

DEFERRAL FOR PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVES OF A DECEASED LIABLE PERSON

When a person dies, their property passes to their personal representative. The personal representative then has the duty to distribute the deceased person's money and property in accordance with the will or with the laws of intestacy if there is no will.

The personal representatives of a deceased person may apply for a deferral of LPT until the earlier of either:

• The date on which the property is transferred or sold

• 3 years after the date of death

To qualify for deferral, the deceased person must have been the sole owner of the property but it does not need to have been their main residence.

DEFERRAL BASED ON PERSONAL INSOLVENCY

If you have entered into a Debt Settlement Arrangement or a Personal Insolvency Arrangement, you can apply for a deferral of LPT while the insolvency arrangement is in place. You must have formally agreed your insolvency arrangement with the Insolvency Service of Ireland and your Insolvency Case Number must be included with your application. You will have to pay the deferred LPT, including accrued interest, when the insolvency arrangement ends.

DEFERRAL BASED ON HARDSHIP

You can claim a deferral if:

• You have had an unexpected and unavoidable significant loss or expense and

• As a result, you are unable to pay LPT without too much financial hardship

You must disclose your financial circumstances and any other information required by Revenue.

Examples of the type of losses or expenses that may be considered include:

• Emergency medical expenses

• Major repairs that are unexpectedly needed to keep your house habitable

• Expenses due to a serious accident or the death of a family member

• The loss of your job

• A bad debt you incur if you are self-employed

INTEREST CHARGED

Any deferred amounts have interest charged on them at a rate of 4% a year. The previous deferral interest rate of 4% applied up to 31 December 2021. The rate of interest charged on all deferred amounts from 1 January 2022 is 3% per year.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A DEFERRAL OF LPT

You can apply for a deferral or partial deferral on the basis of your income when you make your LPT return. If you have already submitted an LPT return, you can apply to Revenue in writing by post or through myEnquiries. If you are applying for a deferral under any of the other categories, you must submit the LPT2 form. You can get further information from the Revenue Local Property Tax (LPT) Branch, Tel: (01)738 3626

If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie You can also contact us by telephone or email: Killarney Tel: 0818 07 7820

QUEEN OF CROKER

Legend Louise leads Kerry to long-awaited All-Ireland

LGFA SENIOR ALL-IRELAND

FINAL

Kerry 3 - 14 | Galway 0 - 11

CROKE PARK

For me, I Gotta Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas used to conjure up blurry memories of the Grand nightclub in Killarney – specifically standing around half-vexed, wondering if the DJ was ever going to play something good. Now it means something else entirely. When David and Paudie Clifford lifted Sam in 2022, the cheesy dance-pop hit was playing in the background. And again, on Sunday last, as Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh approached the Brendan Martin Cup with a smile so big and so bright it could light up the sky, it was the auto-tuned voice of BEP frontman will.i.am that echoed around Croke Park.

So, arguably the two greatest moments in Kerry football’s recent history will forever be associated with I Gotta Feeling. It might be a far cry from The Rose of Tralee but if they ever bring out an official Kerry GAA & LGFA soundtrack, it will have to be there (although maybe somewhere towards the end).

Louise’s long-awaited trophy lift was the high-point on a day of incredible highs for the Kerry ladies. Watching this legend, often referred to as the greatest Kerry footballer to never win an All-Ireland, finally reach the mountain top after 16 seasons was enough to bring a tear to the eye.

Earlier, when the final horn sounded, the 33-year-old made her way down from the Hogan Stand (she had been subbed off to a fitting ovation with three minutes to go) and skipped out onto the pitch like a schoolgirl running from her books on the first day of sum-

mer.

Retirement was on the cards 12 months ago when Kerry lost their second All-Ireland final in a row. If this is to be an ending for the flame-haired footballing goddess, it is an ending of the fairytale variety.

TEAM EFFORT

While it is appropriate to focus on Louise first, and her adoring teammates will be happy to stand back and admire her like the rest of us, the 2023 Players’ Player of the Year certainly did not win this All-Ireland on her own. Far from it, in fact; her form was not as spectacular this year as it was in previous years. She still showed her class – not least in the first half of Sunday’s final when she scored five consecutive points – but it was very much a team effort that got

Kerry over the line.

Galway’s strong running game looked threatening during the opening exchanges but it wasn’t long before The Kingdom’s defensive solidity came to the fore. Working together as a unit, they consistently and very diligently diverted the advancing opponents away from goal. Eventually, the only running Galway were doing was running out of ideas.

Kerry were already dominating when Aoife Dillane’s fortuitous goal gave them an eight-point lead right before half-time (1-8 to 0-3), and at no point in the second period did you ever feel as though the result was in doubt. In the end the margin of victory (12 points, 3-14 to 0-11) did not flatter the champions at all.

From 1 to 15 and beyond it was a sensational display. Goalkeeper Ciara

Butler’s kickouts were on the money. In defence, Eilís Lynch shadowed Galway’s primary scorer Roisín Leonard with typical care, precision and guile, giving up just one point from play. Kayleigh Cronin dominated any attacker who came near her and was deservedly named Player of the Game. Ciara Murphy was once again handed a specific marking role and she acquitted herself admirably. Aishling O’Connell – one of the team’s most reliable players all year - kept Olivia Divilly under wraps. Deirdre Kearney showed the resilience and physical toughness that makes her a much-valued teammate. Aoife Dillane was busy and deserved her goal.

At midfield, the experienced Anna Galvin led by example, and Mary O’Connell exhibited poise and composure beyond her years.

Up front, captain Niamh Carmody posed problems with her incisive runs. Niamh Ní Chonchúir put the team first, as always. Síofra O’Shea worked hard and used possession wisely. Danielle O’Leary was industrious and a constant menace. Emma Dineen had a great battle with the impressive Sarah Ní Loingsigh and finished up with 1-2, including a cleverly taken goal. Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh kicked 0-6 in total and in general her contributions were crafty and efficient, as per usual.

As for the subs, Hannah O’Donoghue’s brilliant goal came as a surprise to absolutely no one; she has been one of the team’s main scoring threats all year. Lorraine Scanlon was simply superb. Cáit Lynch added her usual enthusiasm and energy. And Katie Brosnan and Kate O’Sullivan also slotted in and played their part.

Huge credit must go to Darragh Long and Declan Quill who got basically all their calls right on the day, and all season, from tactics to team selection to in-game decisions and everything in

between. Their names are now etched into the lore of Kerry football, and deservedly so.

CONTRIBUTION

Winning this All-Ireland, Kerry’s first since 1993, is a fantastic accomplishment by this group of individuals but perhaps even more significant than the silverware is their overall contribution to ladies’ football, and to women’s sport in general, in this part of the world.

There was a time in the not-too-distant past when the Kerry ladies were an afterthought within their own county. Now, the team is front and centre, inspiring the next generation of Kayleighs and Síofras and Louises. And it’s not just young girls and women who should be feeling the effect. Male allies will play an important role as our female athletes continue to strive for equality and even within my own circles I have noticed an uptick in support for the Kerry ladies and for women in sport across the board. Having a winning team to latch onto certainly helps. We can take heart, too, from the large number of young male supporters who attended last weekend’s final at Croke Park. Boys like 6-year-old Rian Hickey from Barraduff who went viral after holding up a homemade sign that read “I’m a ladies man”. Thankfully Rian’s generation will be brought up to appreciate the inherent merits of women’s sport.

Like all creatures who fail to adapt, those who are unwilling to alter their perceptions will be left behind as the Kerry ladies and teams and athletes like them march on towards a future as bright as Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh’s smile.

Stunning triumph for superb Kerry ladies

Eamonn Fitzgerald’s shares his thoughts on the LGFA All-Ireland final as Declan Quill and Darragh Long’s team defeated Galway

As captain Dara Ó Cinnéide brought the Sam Maguire home to Kerry in 2004, he turned to his Corca Dhuibhne friend and fellow All-Ireland winner Séamus Mac Gearailt and captured the meaning of it all for players and supporters with a succinct one-liner. “I ndeireadh na dála, tá Sam sa mhála.” (“When all is said and done, Sam is in the bag.”)

Perceptive and articulate as ever in his native language, he pinpointed the importance of Sam residing in Kerry as often as possible. Kerry hadn’t won it since 2000 when they beat Galway in the final. Even four years was too long a wait.

On Monday last, Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh must surely have had the same sentiments when the victorious Kerry team of 2024 arrived at the Fitzgerald Stadium en route to a packed Glebe car park. So much of the sameness. Both are from Corca Dhuibhne, both native Irish speakers, and both brilliant players wearing the green and gold geansaí with pride and honour. Both sing off the same hymn sheet, booting the ‘caid’ over the black spot to propel Kerry towards winning ways. However, there are some differences. Dara won his three All-Irelands in 1997, 2000 and 2004. Louise won every honour in the game including All-Stars and Footballer of the Year but the All-Ireland had eluded her. She waited 17 long and frustrating years during a stellar career with Kerry LGFA to lift the Brendan Martin Cup for her first time at Croke Park on Sunday last, defeating Galway 3-14 to 0-11 in a thrilling spectacle. Kerry now lead the way with 13 Brendan Martin wins, just one ahead of Cork.

CAPTAIN NIAMH Niamh Carmody captained Kerry to ultimate success but Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh played a pivotal role, scoring six points in all (five in the first half). Kerry went into the dressing room with a commanding lead after those scores and that brilliant goal by Aoife Dillane who came from deep in defence. The Kingdom were in good stead at the interval, leading 1-8 to 0-3.

There were truly wonderful individual performances, and the kudos also goes to joint managers Declan Quill and Darragh Long. They were frustrated at being blown out of it for the last two years in the All-Ireland defeats to Meath in 2022 and to Dublin in 2023. They ensured that the horror of three consecutive All-Ireland final losses did not materialise.

During the league campaign they rotated the personnel, rested key players and gave game time to many more. No longer is it possible to win an All-Ireland with just the starting 15 and there was further evidence of that on Sunday last. Look what the bench contributed to the scoring (1-4).

This was a team effort with no weak link, consigning Galway to yet another galling defeat at Croke Park. Just seven days before, Pádraic Joyce’s dreams were sabotaged by a resurgent Armagh. Although Kerry racked up a huge score of 3-14, the foundation for this victory was in defence. All seven starters from Ciara

Butler, the ever-reliable goalkeeper, out worked together to shut out Galway.

Local lady Kayleigh Cronin gave an outstanding display at fullback. She gave an exhibition of that great skill in football, the block-down, which is sadly missing from so many of the current games which are destroyed by handpassing. It is a wonderful skill requiring timing, commitment and bravery, turning last-ditch defence into attack. She needed to be commanding as the Divilly sisters Niamh and Olivia seemed destined to breach the Kerry defence.

Little wonder that Kayleigh was awarded the TG4 Laoch na hImeartha award. More honours will surely come her way in the form of an All-Star.

When I spoke with Kayleigh after the game I first asked her to describe her feelings when the final whistle was blown. “I can’t put it into words all the emotions I felt, but most of all it was one of relief. After all the disappointments and the hard slog preparing all year to

have one more go at winning the All-Ireland took a huge effort from the full panel. Yes, it was worth it.”

It must have been extra special to win the Player of the Game award?

“Those awards are individual, and the only real award is the team one. We have total commitment from the full panel and that is why we won this one. It’s so precious, making up for the devastation we felt after losing the last two All-Ireland finals.”

ROUTE 1

Kerry did use the handpass to good effect when needed but it was Route 1 to attack that pleased the spectators most. Kerry used the quick kick pass into a superb scoring full forward line, and they delivered rich dividends. Let’s hope the other Kerry team will adopt that strategy in 2025 and bring David Clifford, Footballer of the Year and of several years, into play. The Bible says it straight. “Don’t hide your light under a bushel.” The men need to shine the light just as the ladies did. Premature redundancy is a terrible scourge, especially when it is self-inflicted.

That purple patch by Louise that yielded five points and the spectacular goal by Dillane sounded the death knell for hapless Galway. Her looping, dipping shot is one of the most difficult shots for any goalkeeper to save. And all Dearbhla Gower could do was pick the ball out of the net.

Kerry had the luxury of introducing such powerful subs, giving just rewards to brilliant players such as Hannah O’Donoghue, Louise Scanlon and Cáit Lynch. They must have been disappointed that they could not make the starting 15. O’Donoghue was just on the field a minute when she scored her goal after a great assist by Ní Mhuircheartaigh. She also added two points.

Hannah sent a brilliant pinpoint pass to Emma Dineen who scored Kerry’s third goal with just four minutes to go.

It was fitting that the long-serving Lorraine Scanlon scored a point when she entered the fray.

Long

For the record here are the Kerry heroines: Ciara Butler; Eilís Lynch, Kayleigh Cronin, Ciara Murphy; Aishling O'Connell, Deirdre Kearney, Aoife Dillane (1-0); Mary O'Connell (0-1), Anna Galvin (0-1); Niamh Carmody (0-1), Síofra O'Shea, Niamh Ní Chonchúir; Danielle O'Leary, Emma Dinneen (1-2), Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh (0-6, 0-2 from play). Mná ionaid: Hannah O'Donoghue (1-2), Lorraine Scanlon (0-1), Katie Brosnan, Cáit Lynch, Kate O'Sullivan.

BRENDAN MARTIN

Special mention and fulsome praise must go to Brendan Martin, the Tullamore native who played a pivotal role in organising ladies’ Gaelic football games and putting ladies’ football on a national basis during the early 1970s, leading to the founding of the LGFA 50 years ago. Let’s not forget Mick Fitzgerald, the Galway man who got involved in assisting camogie in Kerry but in 1974 along with Fossa’s Alex Rintoul (RIP) he picked the first Kerry ladies’ football team and promoted it to great heights when they won nine out of ten All-Irelands. Maith sibh, Brendan, Mick and Alex.

In the intermediate final Leitrim captured their title, a rare occurrence for that county, edging out Tyrone 3-11 to 3-10. In the junior final Fermanagh defeated Louth and the real match winner here was the Player of the Game Eimear Smyth who scored a whopping 1-9. That’s it as the Kerry LGFA takes centre stage in this week’s edition. There is plenty of other sporting action going on at the minute, especially with so much glory for Ireland in the Paris Olympics. Round 2 matches in the Kerry Club Football Championships were played and this weekend Round 3 games will decide which teams make it to the knockout stages. Kerry FC scored a memorable 3-3 draw away to Athlone Town, but they should have earned full points after holding a twogoal lead until Athlone drew level with goals in the 86th and 88th minutes. They have a home game this Friday night at 7.45pm but they have tough opposition in Cobh Ramblers.

Killarney Legion GAA

RESULT: Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Club Championship. The Senior Men bounced back from the opening day defeat at the hands at Glenflesk with a well merited win over Gneeveguilla in Doreen on Saturday evening. While it was the nature of the defeat, not the performance, that irked many in Spa, the overall showing against the Sliabh Luachra side was very efficient. Five players, namely James O’Donoghue, David O’Sullivan, Darragh Lyne, Darragh O’Doherty and Denis Sheahan all found the target in the opening half to open up a 0-9 to 0-6 interval lead. With a slight breeze to their backs, four more found their name on the

scoresheet. Peter McCarthy with four, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Rob Leen and Jamie Alade all combined to stretch the lead out to eight points, 0-17 to 0-9. Daire Murphy made his championship debut with three further scorers, the Gammell brothers and Jonathon Lyne making it a 0-20 to 0-9 victory. Next weekend sees a trip down south to Caherciveen where St Mary's lie in wait. A win would see us qualify for the quarter finals. Team: Brian Kelly, Darragh Fleming, Darragh O’Doherty (0-1), Peter O’Sullivan, Jonathan Lyne (0-1), Danny Sheahan, Rob Leen (0-1), Jamie Alade (0-1) Cian Gammell (0-1), Eoghan O’Sullivan (0-1), Darragh Lyne (0-2), Denis Sheahan (0-2), James O’Donoghue (0-1), David O’Sullivan (03), Peter McCarthy (0-4). Subs used Sam Benson for James O’Donoghue, Shaun Keane for Jamie Alade, Conor Gammell (0-1) for Peter O’Sullivan, Cathal Sheahan for Jonathan Lyne, Daire Murphy for Peter McCarthy.

KERRY LADIES: A huge congratulations to the Kerry Senior Ladies on their extremely impressive win over Galway last Sunday. It brought the Brendan Martin Cup to the Kingdom and ended a 31 year wait for All Ireland glory. A special mention to S and C Coach Eric McDonnell, whose daughter is an active member of our Saturday Morning Academy.

MINOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: The fixtures have been confirmed for the group stages of the Keane’s SuperValu Minor County Championship. We entertain Kenmare Shamrocks in Direen on this Monday August 5th while a week later we travel to Castleisland to take on St Kieran’s in the second round. A neutral venue fixture against Austin Stacks rounds up the group games. The top two in the group qualify for the quarter finals with third and fourth entering into the Shield competition. Plenty football ahead for our U17 Boys.

KERRY SOUTH DEVELOPMENT

SQUADS: Well done to Samuel Scroope, James Murphy, Ronan O’Brien, Mark Looney and Jack Culloty who all played with South Kerry in a comfortable victory over Cavan u15s on Saturday in Portlaoise. Jamie Fleming, Sean Lyne, Conor Moynihan and Cian Hegarty were also part of the U14 team that travelled to Kildare to face the host County and Westmeath. Jayden Hurley, who is also on the panel, missed today due to holidays. U16 LADIES: Our U16 Green team continued their Division Three County League campaign on Thursday evening with a visit to local rivals Glenflesk. Both teams are well used to each other and never fail to turn up a tough battle with no quarter asked or given, and so it played out again. On a warm evening, the game was played 13 v 13, which made for a wideopen game of football. Legion played with the aid of the wind and led at half time 7-04 to 3-03 with some excellently worked scores. Glenflesk was always going to mount a challenge in the second

half, and so it played out. With some well taken goals, they fought their way back into the game, but when our girls did carry it up the field, it yielded results on the scoreboard to keep us in front. In a tough encounter, there were a number of injuries, and we wish the wounded on both sides speedy recoveries. These teams never fail to serve up entertaining football of a high quality and did so again this evening with Legion running out winners on a scoreline of 9-08 to 7-08.

SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 0:17 Milltown Castlemaine 0:06. We welcomed Milltown Castlemaine to Lewis Road last Saturday evening where we put on a great display of second half football to keep them scoreless until the 1st minute of injury time. It was our opponents who started the game livelier, scoring the opening two points of the game. It wasn't until the 10th minute of the game that we got our first score through a Tom Doyle point from play. We pushed on from there and swapped scores for much of the half. We went in leading at half time on a scoreline of 6 points to 5 points. We dominated the second half and saw some fine scoring from Tony Brosnan, Fionn Fitzgerald, Alex Hennigan, Mark O'Shea and David Shaw. Credit must be given to the backlines who kept our opponents scoreless for the majority of the half. Next up we face Na Gaeil away next Saturday at 4pm in the last group game.

U16 GIRLS: Fossa U16 Girls were on the road again and travelled to deepest South Kerry for their latest game. Tousist GAA Club was the venue for our Division 1, Rd 3 match against ISG. With a few on holidays we travelled with a hardy group of 14. We played 13 aside and there was a lot of space available. ISG exploited this and created and converted some early goal chances. These early scores settled them, and Fossa were on the back foot. Our girls played themselves into the game and went in 2-02 v 0-06 only 0-2 points down at the break. A tough battle ensued in the 2nd half and ISG raced into a five-point lead with an early goal. A Fossa goal was really needed which duly came and a few well pointed frees tightened the game up. With four minutes to go we were two points down, we scored, we turned the ball over and at the death we scored again to level it up at 1-10 v 3-04. We were always behind and were never level until the final whistle. A draw, a great result in the circumstances, achieved with pure hard work and effort. Well done to everyone - warriors one and all.

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Fossa and Castleisland Desmonds served up a cracking game of football in this Intermediate Championship Rd 2 clash in Fossa on Saturday evening. Emmett O’Shea opened the scoring with a long-range point after two minutes before Desmonds replied with a Graham O’Conner free in the 4th minute. David Clifford kicked a free and a point from play by Emmett O’Shea pushed Fossa ahead again before the accurate Graham O’Connor replied for Desmonds. It was real championship football at this stage, both sides went at it and there were some super passages of attacking play. David Clifford kicked a monster point and Paudie Clifford landed two fabulous efforts to give Fossa a four-point lead at the 13th minute mark. Luka Brosnan hit two fine points from midfield for Desmonds and a Thomas Hickey free kept them in touch, Paudie Clifford was having a storming game and he set David up for two points with deft passes from the middle of the field. The decisive score in this game came in the 29th minute, a 30-yard pass from Cian O’Shea into David Clifford resulted in a fantastic goal to give Fossa a healthy lead at the break, 1-08 to 0-07. The high tempo was kept up by both sides in the second half’ Isaac Brosnan kicked a point for Desmonds in the 3rd minute, Emmett O’Shea and Matt

Rennie replied with two quick points for Fossa, Graham O’Connor kicked a free for Desmonds before two excellent Cian O’Shea points restored Fossa’s advantage by the 15th minute. Desmonds needed a response and driven forward by Adam Donoghue, they chipped away at the lead with frees from Graham O’Connor and points from Isaac Brosnan, Luka Brosnan, Domnic Finnegan and Brian Leonard. David Clifford showed all his guile and class with some tremendous movement and scores to keep Fossa ahead, they led by two points with time almost up. Desmonds pushed hard for a goal and nearly got it when a shot hit the inside of the post but stayed out, Michael O’Dwyer scored a great point after some neat build up play and then Cian O’Shea had a brilliant interception as Desmonds attacked again, he passed to Matt Rennie who gave a pinpoint left footed pass to David Clifford who sealed the win for Fossa with his ninth point of the game. Full-time score, Fossa 1-18, Castleisland Desmonds 0-16. Fossa will be delighted to have got their championship back on track after last weekend, it was a very solid display. Paudie Clifford gave an exceptional display of footballing genius, David does what we all know he can do with some breathtaking scores, Cian O’Shea gave a storming display at midfield and to a man, every Fossa player stood up and was counted when the need was greatest. We are away to Ballydonoghue next weekend in the last game of the round. Fossa: David Clifford 1-9 (4 frees), Emmett O’Shea 0-3, Paudie Clifford 0-2, Cian O’Shea 0-2, Matt Rennie 0-1, Michael O’Dwyer 0-1. Glenflesk GAA
