ARE YOU PLANNING YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAYS?
Currently in Kerry there are over 800 people waiting to have a cataract removed and the current wait time is almost 4 years
Would you like to have it removed by the end of August and have your sight restored ?
The HSE will change the reimbursement amount for a cataract removal on the 1st September 2024.
Is your passport in date? Is there someone in your family who never held a passport?
This will mean that any patient who travels after 1st September will only receive €863 as a refund compared to the current amount of €1900. So, I’m urging anyone who is considering travelling to please contact me or my office immediately, so you can travel before 31st August and get your full refund.
First time passports are currently taking 8 weeks to process so DON’T DELAY ON APPLYING
Following the HSE’s recent announcement that the reimbursement to people travelling to Belfast for a Catatact Procedure would be reduced, I raised the matter in the Dail with the Taoiseach and Minister for Health and the HSE.
They have agreed to extend the date of changes for the reimbursement until the end of August 2024.
Therefore I am advising anybody who is in need of a Cataract Procedure to book your place NOW on one of the three buses that I have arranged during the month of August.
Please contact myself or my office for full details and everything will be arranged for you.
I assure you that I will continue making strong epresentation until such time as the Government can provide a proper service for people in the Republic of Ireland. Until such time, the reimbursement needs to be reinstated to the full amount to ensure people can go to Belfast to get their sight back.

Five novices take their vows at Killarney Friary
A significant milestone was reached on Thursday this week as five young men took their first vows as Franciscan friars at the Killarney Friary.
After completing a year-long novitiate in Killarney, Brothers Christophe Samois (Belgium), Vianney Berlozot (France), Giovanni Haddas (Netherlands), Vincent McConnell (Canada), and Thomas-Maria Kessler (Switzerland) will made their professions on the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
The novitiate year is a formative period
for young men discerning a vocation to religious life. It involves prayer, communal living, and study, providing a foundation for future ministry.
The five novices have spent the past year immersed in Franciscan spirituality, theology, and history, as well as engaging in pastoral work within the local community.
Following their first profession, the brothers will return to their home provinces or countries to continue their formation before making their final vows.
Novice Master, Fr. Antony Jukes of Killarney Friary guided the young men throughout their novitiate, accompanying them on their spiritual journey.
The Franciscan Friary in Killarney has a long tradition of professions and welcomed the opportunity to celebrate this important step in the lives of these five young men.
Driver jailed for killing Killarney man while using phone
A distracted driver has been sentenced to six years in prison for causing the death of a cyclist. Terry Varndell, 37, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving following a collision that claimed the life of 26-year-old David Breen from Countess Road, Killarney, on October 26, 2021. Mr. Breen was cycling home from football when he was struck by Varndell's Vauxhall Zafira on the A286 Main Road near Chichester, West Sussex. The cyclist was tragically killed at the scene. Police investigations revealed that Varndell had been using his mobile phone in the moments leading up to the fatal collision. The court heard how the victim's family had been devastated by their loss, describing Mr. Breen as a "funny, caring, and loving" young man.
In addition to the prison sentence, Varndell was disqualified from driving for eight years.
The case highlights the devastating consequences of using a mobile phone while driving.
Still no money for Farranfore to Killarney road project
Deputy Michael Healy Rae TD has renewed his calls for the Minister for the Environment, Climate, Communications and Transport, Eamon Ryan, to commit a start date for the delivery programme for the N22 Killarney to Farranfore road project.
Despite the former Green Party leader admitting that Kerry County Council has enough money to progress their side of the project, Department money has not
been forthcoming.
This is something that has angered Deputy Michael Healy Rae TD who outlined the years of frustration for those affected by a delay of over 25 years.
“Known locally as the Killarney bypass project, It has already been on the table for more than 25 years. As far back as 2004 a route was selected but due to the economic downturn in 2008, the project was taken down,” said Healy Rae. “The project was progressed once again
in 2021 with a number of possible new routes identified of which none was selected, something that has caused great upset with landowners and residents along the routes who cannot sell property or apply for planning permission as their lands may be subject to a compulsory purchase in the future.
“For a man who is a great believer in communication, Maybe we can see some action. All we hear from the Minister is talk about his Department and Transport In-
frastructure Ireland communicating with each other but never anything committed despite promises that this project will be progress.
“The effect of the delay of the project can be seen each summer in Killarney which sees motorists come to a standstill for hours, something which has become unbearable for residents with a lot of pressure points on the junctions intersecting the current N22 primary road leading to accidents.”
Brothers Christophe Samois (Belgium), Vianney Berlozot (France), Giovanni Haddas (Netherlands), Vincent McConnell (Canada), and Thomas-Maria Kessler (Switzerland) with some of their mentors at Killarney Friary this week.

400 million audience for Killarney after BBC feature
Killarney has enjoyed a significant boost in global recognition following a glowing feature by renowned BBC journalist, Gemma Tipton.
The story had a potential reach of over 400 million people.
Published on the BBC website this week, Tipton’s article has placed Killarney firmly on the international travel radar.
Tipton’s piece highlighted the region’s natural beauty, including the iconic Killarney National Park, Lakes of Killarney, and Torc Waterfall. She also praised the town’s warm hospitality, vibrant atmosphere, and delicious cuisine.
The article’s impact is expected to be substantial, with the BBC boasting an average weekly global reach of 447 million people in 2023. Local tourism bodies anticipate a surge in visitor numbers as a result of this positive exposure.
Beyond its natural allure, Tipton also commended Killarney’s commitment to sustainability, highlighting the town’s ban on single-use coffee cups and the work of the Killarney Mountain Meitheal. The community group, founded by local sustainability pioneer Johnny McGuire, collaborates with the Tidy Towns on various environmental initiatives, including the removal of invasive species and the beautification of public spaces.
“It is great that on out tenth anniversary we have been acknowledged by such a prestigious publication,” said Mr Maguire. “It is great that this well-known journalist acknowledges the incredible effort by the business community that have made Killarney a sustainable town. pushing the boat out, and it is time that the government support this wonderful initiative by the small business of the town."
Parking crisis worsening traffic congestion in town centre
Independent councillor Martin Grady has called for urgent action to address the town's growing parking crisis, which he believes is exacerbating traffic congestion.
Cllr Grady claims that a shortage of parking spaces is forcing motorists to circle the town in search of a spot, leading to increased traffic congestion. He also highlighted the issue of residents being unable to park outside their own homes due to a lack of available spaces.
The councillor pointed to the removal of 80 parking spaces for outdoor dining as a contributing factor to the problem. He also criticised the impact of pedestrianisation and one-way streets on the town's parking situation.
While acknowledging the importance of tourism to Killarney's economy, Cllr Grady stressed the need to prioritise the needs of local residents. He proposed the construction of a multi-storey car park as a potential solution to the parking crisis.

Book signing at Bricín Craft Shop celebrating Irish-American Philanthropist John McShain
Author Alice McLoughlin will attend a book signing event at Bricín Craft Shop on Monday, August 19.
McLoughlin’s ‘More Precious than Gold’ book is a heartfelt tribute to Irish-American building contractor John McShain, whose philanthropic endeavours had a profound impact on both Ireland and the United States.
American millionaire John McShain owned the stately home from 1906 until he died in 1998.
On his passing, he left the house to the Irish State and the house and gardens are now one of the town’s top tourist attractions.
Known as the man who built America, McShain is renowned for constructing iconic landmarks such as the Pentagon and the Jefferson Memorial.
He also set up the McShain Foundation scholarship, helping those less well-off on the road to education.
McLoughlin was a recipient of a McShain Foundation scholarship and developed a close relationship with the McShain family.
This enabled her to leave her native Tinneranny in County Wexford and travel to Pennsylvania where she graduated four

years later with an honour’s degree in Psychology and English.
Through the altruism of her benefactor, she went on to post-graduate study at Villanova University and completed a Master’s in Counselling and Human Relations.
As an expression of her gratitude for this life-transforming opportunity, Alice began a long-term correspondence with her sponsor, a devout Catholic with Derry
Irish Rail service capacity frustrates cycling tourists
Cyclists looking to explore Killarney National Park by bicycle are facing a significant hurdle due to limited capacity on Irish Rail services.
One of the main entrances to the national park is less than one kilometre from Killarney Railway Station.
Currently there are only two designated bicycle spaces available on each Intercity train service into town.
With the growing popularity of cycling in general and the opening of greenways like the Kingdom of Kerry Greenways and the upcoming completion of the South Kerry Greenway, concerns are rising about the ability of tourists to combine cycling holidays with train travel. This issue, highlighted by Kerry Councillor Michael Cahill, restricts access for cyclists arriving by train and is forcing cycling en-
thusiasts to arrive in Kerry by car, adding to the already woeful traffic issues.
“This limitation on bicycle capacity on trains effectively cuts off a viable public transport option for many cyclists,” said Cahill. “Individuals who miss out on booking these limited slots or families traveling with multiple bikes are left without a convenient way to reach the greenways.”
Irish Rail’s website acknowledges the restriction, advising travellers to book online in advance. However, Councillor Cahill said that this solution is insufficient, especially considering the surge in interest in cycling tourism.
He has called upon Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan and Irish Rail to address the issue urgently. Increased capacity for bicycles on trains is seen as essential to fully support the growth of greenway tourism in Kerry.
ancestry. John McShain’s faith was central to his life, and it was founded on his education in Jesuit institutions. Through his work, he sought to honour his God in all he constructed.
In 1946 when his only child, Pauline, entered the convent, he accepted that he would not leave an heir and so he devoted vast wealth to various Catholic charities. In addition to her correspondence with John McShain, Alice got to know his
daughter, Sr. Pauline.
‘More Precious than Gold’, further traces the fortunes of the major legacy the McShains made to the Irish people in the form of Killarney House and the surrounding thousands of acres including two of the famous lakes of Killarney, Ross Castle, and Inisfallen Island. Following many decades of neglect Killarney House is now beautifully restored.
“One of my happiest and proudest moments was the privilege of delivering the address initiating John McShain into the Irish-American Hall of Fame at the Dunbrody Famine Ship in my native New Ross on September 4, 2019. Being able to say thanks for the myriad blessings bestowed on both sides of the Atlantic by John, surrounded by dignitaries from Kerry and by McShain’s family members from America and Derry was indeed‘More Precious than Gold’,” she said. Her book delves into the life and legacy of this extraordinary man, highlighting his contributions to architecture, philanthropy, and Irish-American relations.
The book signing event offers readers a unique opportunity to meet the author and learn more about the fascinating story behind "More Precious than Gold."
The book selling and signing is scheduled for between 11 am and 1 pm on Monday at Bricín Craft Shop.

Cyclists conquer Killarney as part of epic Tour de Munster
Killarney played host to a leg of the gruelling Tour de Munster last Friday.
The annual charity event, which raises funds for Down Syndrome Ireland, culminated in a challenging climb up Cork City’s iconic St. Patrick’s Hill on Sunday. Over 100 riders, including cycling legend Sean Kelly, embarked on the four-day journey through Munster, covering over 600 kilometres.

Choosing paint colours for a north-facing room - Our Top Tips
| By Tony Griffin Manager, Pat McDonnell Paints – Tralee
Did you know that the direction a room faces can have a dramatic effect on how colours appear? Read on for our top tips on paint colour selection for a north-facing rooms.
North-facing rooms typically receive indirect light, making them darker and emphasising cooler tones like greys, blues, and greens. However, these rooms benefit from the absence of intense shadows, creating a sense of stillness.
TIP #1: USE WARM WHITES
Warm whites with yellow or red undertones can brighten a north-facing room by counteracting its coolness. Hanging a large mirror opposite the window can further enhance this effect by bouncing light around the room.
“Some of my favourite warm whites for north-facing rooms include ‘DH Linen’ from Dulux Heritage and ‘White Tie No. 2022’ from Farrow & Ball.” - Arunima Dutta, Blanchardstown store.
TIP #2: INJECT POPS OF COLOUR
Add colour pops as accent pieces to inject vibrancy to the room. Select warm colours such as golden yellows, deep jewel tones, or plummy purples to create a stunning contrast against the cool light.
“A sample palette for a north-facing room could be a warm white such as ‘Roman White’, a warm-neutral like ‘Biscuit Beige’ and a deep, warm accent colour such as ‘Florentine Red’ (all Dulux Heritage colours).” - Anne Curtin, Pat McDonnell Paints Galway
TIP #3: ALWAYS TEST!
Every space is different, so always test with paint samples to see how they look
under your lighting conditions before committing to a colour scheme.
TIP #4: GO DARK
While it might seem counter-intuitive, one great option is to simply embrace the darkness. You can use dark colours such as 'Templar Grey’ from Colourtrend or ‘Crow’ from Ralston to create a cosy, cocooning feel. Soft furnishings in neutral colours and low lighting can offset the darkness.
TIP #5: CONSULT AN EXPERT
With so many factors to consider, choosing colours may feel overwhelming. For expert advice tailored to your space, you may wish to enlist the support of a design and colour expert. At Pat McDonnell Paints, we offer a free Colour Consultancy service. Our colour consultants will help you to create a palette that will bring out the best in your space.

Billy and Sharleen’s Tipperary Wedding Tale
WEDDING OF THE WEEK
In a day filled with laughter and love from start to finish, Sharleen Whitney and Billy Goulding tied the knot on Friday, August 9, at the stunning Kilshane House estate in Tipperary.
The couple, who met in Dubai in 2018 and got engaged during a safari in Kenya two years ago, were blessed with the sunniest day of the summer for their special day.
Hailing from Ennis, Co. Clare, Sharleen was a vision of beauty as she exchanged vows with Billy, a native of Killarney, surrounded by family and friends. The breathtaking setting of Kilshane House was made even more spectacular with the floral artistry and décor provided by Elderwoods floristry, while Memories of a magical day were captured by the talented Paul Duane photography, and Tom, of VowArt videography
A standout feature of the day was the custom-built Prosecco Wall, crafted by Sharleen’s good friend, Aine Kelleher, which was a hit with guests as they toasted the happy couple.
As is the case with any Irish wedding, music played a central role in the celebration, with the Honeyvoom Duo setting a vibrant atmosphere during the ceremony and reception. The Pearls wedding band then took over, keeping the dance floor packed late into the night. Both fathers of the couple (Andy and Tommy) will be glad to have their feet on solid ground again, having spent most of the night hoisted onto shoulders of the the wedding guests and paraded around the dancefloor.
Sharleen was supported by her bridesmaids Eleanor O'Dea, Amy Comerford, Kate O'Brien, and Laura Bugler. Billy was
joined by his best man Michael Griffin, along with groomsmen Shane Murphy, Stephen Devane, and Alex Courtney. As the night continued, Sax Appeal’s lively saxophone performance kept the energy high, and once he finished, the guests led a late-night singsong of classic Irish ballads and pop songs.
The couple was joined by their close-knit families, including Sharleen’s parents Caroline and Tommy, her brother Thomas, Billy’s parents Sheila and Andy, and his sister Chloe. After a day of joy and dancing, the celebrations carried on into a second day at The Locke Bar in Limerick.

Local Comhaltas branches shine at All-Ireland fleadh
Kilcummin and Glenflesk Comhaltas branches have brought immense pride to Kerry after outstanding performances at the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Wexford.
The annual celebration of Irish culture saw thousands of competitors from across the country vying for coveted All-Ireland titles. Amidst the fierce competition, Kilcummin and Glenflesk Comhaltas members shone brightly, securing multiple awards. Kilcummin Comhaltas enjoyed a particularly triumphant weekend. Their under-12 mixed set dancers were crowned All-Ireland champions, while the under-18 ladies set also clinched the top prize. Individual accolades included a third-place finish for Eoin Foley in button accordion and an All-Ireland title for Michael Healy in the 15-18 button accordion category.
Glenflesk Comhaltas also celebrated success with their under-18 ladies four-hand mixed and senior mixed four-hand ceili teams securing All-Ireland titles. Additionally, Rory, Éabha, Aoife, and Jack achieved third place in the mixed fourhand ceili under-18 competition, and Grace Angland secured second place in the under-18 piano. Both branches have expressed their gratitude to members, parents, supporters, and mentors for their unwavering dedication and support. To celebrate their achievements, Kilcummin Comhaltas will host an end-of-year celebration on August 25th at the GAA hall.

WHO declares global health emergency over Mpox
The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared a global health emergency in response to the escalating Mpox outbreak primarily affecting countries in Africa.
The decision follows a meeting of the WHO's emergency committee, which concluded that the rapid spread of the virus constitutes a significant public health risk.
The declaration, the highest level of
alert issued by the WHO, triggers a coordinated international response to contain the outbreak and prevent its further spread. Health officials worldwide are now tasked with intensifying surveillance, contact tracing, and vaccination efforts.
The recent surge in Mpox cases, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries, has raised concerns due to the emergence of a new, highly transmissible strain of
the virus. Experts warn that the situation requires immediate global attention to avoid a wider epidemic.
The WHO has emphasized the importance of equitable access to vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics, especially for vulnerable populations in Africa. Additionally, the organization is urging countries to strengthen their public health infrastructure and promote awareness about the virus to prevent further transmission.
Ukraine's border-push forces mass evacuations in Russia away Home
Tensions are escalating sharply along the Russia-Ukraine border as Ukrainian forces are making significant inroads into Russian territory. The crisis has prompted mass evacuations.
Authorities in Russia’s Kursk region, bordering Ukraine, ordered the evacuation of approximately 20,000 residents from the Glushkov district due to the
advancing Ukrainian troops. The move underscores the growing threat posed by Kyiv’s offensive, which has caught Moscow off guard.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed his forces had pushed several kilometres into Russian territory, capturing prisoners and aiming to create a buffer zone to protect border communities from constant attacks. Kyiv has
NASA stalled on astronaut return plan
NASA officials have confirmed that they are still grappling with the complex logistics of returning two astronauts safely to Earth.
The duo, currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), were initially scheduled for an eight-day mission but have been stranded in orbit due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.
The unexpected extension of their mission has presented NASA with a formidable challenge. Options on the table include repairing the Starliner for a return journey, sending up a replacement spacecraft, or utilizing a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. Each of these alternatives carries its own set of risks and complexities.
The space agency has emphasized the safety of the astronauts as its top priority and has stated that a decision on the return method will be made in the coming weeks. The prolonged stay in space is placing additional strain on the ISS and its resources, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
also launched a series of drone strikes targeting Russian military installations. Moscow has responded with heavy bombardment of Ukrainian border areas and vowed to expel Ukrainian troops. The situation has raised concerns about a potential escalation, with the potential for a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.
Western nations, while supporting Ukraine, have expressed caution about providing weapons capable of striking deep into Russian territory. As the conflict intensifies, the humanitarian crisis in the region is deepening, with civilians caught in the crossfire.
X (Twitter) ordered to pay €550,000 in unfair dismissal case
A former senior executive at Twitter has been awarded a record €550,000 in compensation after the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) found he was unfairly dismissed by the company.
The decision marks a significant win for the employee, Gary Rooney, who was let go following an ultimatum issued by Twitter owner Elon Musk in November 2022. Musk's email, titled "A Fork in the Road," demanded employees commit to a "hardcore" work culture with long hours and high intensity, giving them just 24 hours to respond.
Rooney’s refusal to click "yes" on the email was interpreted by Twitter as
a resignation, leading to the termination of his employment. However, the WRC found that the company's actions amounted to unfair dismissal, as the 24hour deadline was unreasonable, and the company failed to provide substantial grounds for termination.
The award, the largest of its kind in Ireland, highlights the potential risks for employers who impose drastic changes to employment terms without proper consultation. It also underscores the importance of fair treatment and reasonable notice periods in the workplace. Twitter has yet to comment on the decision and it remains to be seen whether they will appeal the ruling.
Steven Bartlett in hot water over misleading ads
High-profile entrepreneur and TV personality Steven Bartlett has found himself at the centre of controversy after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned two of his social media advertisements for being misleading.
The ads, promoting the nutrition brands Huel and Zoe, failed to disclose Bartlett’s financial ties to both companies.
The ASA ruled that Bartlett's position as a director at Huel and an investor in Zoe was material information that consumers needed to make informed decisions about the products. The reg-
House prices soar in Cork and Kerry
The housing crisis continues to deepen in Ireland as new figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) reveal a staggering 9.5% increase in house prices across Cork and Kerry in the past year.
This surge comes as the CSO simultaneously launched its new Eircode valuation app, providing homeowners with a tool to estimate property values. The latest data underscores the ongoing challenges faced by potential homebuyers in the region, with prices continuing
to climb at an alarming rate. The combined pressures of rising costs, limited supply, and increased demand have created an increasingly competitive market.
The CSO’s newly launched app offers homeowners a convenient way to assess the estimated value of their property based on its Eircode. While the app is seen as a useful tool for property owners, concerns have been raised about its potential impact on the already inflated market, as it could further fuel demand and price increases.
Festival-goers flock to Stradbally for Electric Picnic
Ireland's biggest music and arts festival, Electric Picnic, is kicking off a little earlier than usual this year, with over 75,000 festival goers expected to descend on the picturesque Stradbally Estate this weekend.
ulator emphasized the importance of transparency in advertising, especially when endorsed by influential figures like Bartlett.
This isn't the first time Bartlett has faced scrutiny over his advertising practices. In 2022, an ad for Huel on his podcast, "Diary of a CEO," was also banned for exaggerating the product's benefits. The controversy has sparked a wider debate about the ethics of influencer marketing and the responsibility of public figures to be transparent about their commercial relationships. Bartlett, known for his outspoken views on business and entrepreneurship, has yet to publicly comment on the ASA's ruling.
With a lineup packed to the brim with talent, it’s impossible to mention everyone, but headliners Kylie Minogue, Noah Kahan, and Calvin Harris are sure to draw massive crowds. Irish acts like CMAT, Lankum, Kneecap, The Wolfe Tones, and Bambie Thug are also must-sees. And there's even more to get excited about
with newly added acts including The Saw Doctors, The Mary Wallopers, Hermitage Green, Chasing Abbey, Jordan Adetunji, and Odhran Murphy. Met Éireann has forecast plenty of dry weather mixed with showers in the coming days ahead of festival weekend. Conditions over Electric Picnic weekend will be “as good as can be expected during this time of the year” with some risk of showers on Friday according to Met Éireann. The weather for the concert will be “overall dry with temperatures warming up over the weekend”, said Siobhán Ryan, duty forecaster for Met Éireann.

Fundraising weekend for injured racer Anthony O’Carroll
A fundraising weekend will be held in September to support motorcycle racer Anthony O'Carroll, who was seriously injured during the Southern 100 race on the Isle of Man in July.
O'Carroll, a rising star in the sport, has been in the intensive care unit of Liverpool's Walton Centre for Neuroscience since the accident. His family faces a long and expensive road to recovery.
To ease the financial burden, motorsport enthusiasts from Kerry Motor Club, Ballyduff Vintage Club, No Hopers Motorcycle Club, and Kerry Motorcycle Racers have
organized a fundraising event in O'Carroll's home village of Ballyduff, taking place September 13-15.
The full program will be announced soon, but plans include a racing motorcycle exhibition, a classic and rally car display, music, and entertainment. A classic car run, motorcycle ride-out, barbecues, a five-a-side soccer tournament, and a 5km walk will also be part of the festivities, welcoming the broader community.

Improving your outof-office experience
The perennial debate about work, out-of-office messages, and holidays continues to be a hot topic. It's a delicate balance between staying connected and truly disconnecting.
Many of us have been guilty of checking work emails on vacation, or even worse, taking on full-blown projects while supposedly on break. This not only impacts our enjoyment of time off but can also lead to burnout.
SETTING BOUNDARIES
The key to a successful vacation lies in setting clear boundaries.
Effective Handover: Prepare detailed handover notes for your colleagues. This ensures a smooth transition and prevents them from feeling overwhelmed or neglected.
Out-of-Office Clarity: Be explicit about your availability or unavailability. If you're checking emails, specify when and how often.
Limited Check-Ins: If you must check emails, allocate specific times for this task. Avoid constant interruptions
and distractions.
Digital Detox: Consider completely switching off your work devices to fully immerse yourself in your vacation.
COMPANY CULTURE

Deferring your State Pension (Contributory)
From 1st January 2024, a number of changes have been introduced in relation to claiming your State Pension (Contributory). One of these changes is that you can defer claiming your pension.
Q. What is deferring the State Pension (Contributory)?
A. The State Pension (Contributory) is paid to people from the age of 66 who have enough (PRSI) contributions. From January 2024, you can choose to start claiming your State Pension (Contributory) anytime between the ages of 66 and 70. Choosing a later start date is called deferring your pension. You can defer your start date up until you turn 70.
Q. Why would I defer the start date for my State Pension (Contributory)?
A. During deferral, you can continue to work and make PRSI contributions to increase your personal rate of payment or meet the qualifying condition of 520 (10 years) contributions for State Pension (Contributory).
This means that deferring your State Pension (Contributory) can help you to:
• Qualify for State Pension (Contributory) if you didn't qualify at age 66
• Get a higher rate of State Pension (Contributory) than what you would have got at age 66
Q. Who can defer their State Pension (Contributory)?
A. If you were born on or after 1958, you can choose to claim the State Pension (Contributory) anytime between the ages of 66 and 70.
Once you start claiming your State Pension (Contributory), you can no longer choose to defer your pension claim, even if you keep working. This is because you don’t pay PRSI once you start getting your pension.
Q. What are the current rates of deferred State Pension (Contributory)?
A. If you choose to start claiming your pension between age 67 and 70, you may be entitled to a higher rate of State Pension (Contributory).
Your pension rate depends on the age you are when you start getting your pension. If you don’t qualify for the maximum rate, you may get a reduced rate. The table below includes maximum rates based on January 2024 rates of State Pension (Contributory). There will be proportionate rates for qualified adults and children.
Q. How many PRSI contributions can I make during deferral?
During deferral, you can continue to make PRSI contributions to increase your personal rate of payment or meet the qualifying condition of 520 (10 years) contributions for State Pension (Contributory).
However, you will not be able to increase your contributions past the current maximum of 2080 (40 years). It is important to know how many contributions you have before you are going to drawdown your pension.
Q. How do I estimate the rate of my State Pension (Contributory)?
To estimate your State Pension (Contributory) rate, you can ask for a copy of your Contribution Statement on MyWelfare.ie. This statement includes all your PRSI contributions, including paid PRSI contributions and Long-Term Carers Contributions.
You need a verified MyGovID account to use this service. You can find information on how to estimate your State Pension (Contributory) rates on gov.ie. You can also contact your local Citizens Information Centre when you get your social insurance record and they will assist you to work out your entitlement.
Q. How do I apply?
You should apply for the State Pension (Contributory) no more than 6 months before your claim start date. If you apply late, your pension start date can be backdated 6 months only.
The Department of Social Protection will publish a new application form for State Pension (Contributory) soon. It will ask for the date you want to start getting your pension. This can be at age 66, like it is now, or any date between 66 and 70.
If you use the current SPC1 application form and you turn 66 in 2024, the Department will write to you asking what date you want to start claiming your State Pension (Contributory)
If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie
You can also contact us by telephone or email: Killarney, Tel: 0818 07 7820 Email: Killarney@citinfo.ie

Local clubs hoping to land knockout blow
Bumper weekend of football ahead as major competitions get serious
It’s do or die football from here on out as local clubs gear up for the knockout rounds of the Kerry Senior and Intermediate Club Football Championships, which get under way this weekend.
In the senior competition, all four favourites navigated the group stage to book their place in the semi-finals, although it was a close-run thing for Kenmare last weekend as they held on to earn a crucial point against Templenoe.
Rathmore had already qualified and they rested players for their final round robin match against Spa. The Killarney club
needed a big win and for the result to go their way in Kenmare but ultimately they were unlucky to miss out despite triumphing by a whopping 13 points.
Dingle finished top of the other group with an unblemished record following a 1-14 to 0-5 win over Milltown/Castlemaine. Dr Crokes’ four-point victory over Na Gaeil sent them through as runners-up.
All of that means that in this weekend’s semi-finals, Dingle will play Kenmare Shamrocks at home in Páirc an Ághasaigh (a repeat of last year’s final which
Dingle won) and Rathmore will host the Crokes in Rathbeg.
INTERMEDIATE
As always the Intermediate Club Championship appears to be quite open, although many observers have singled out Austin Stacks as favourites. As Group A toppers they have earned home advantage against Group D runners-up Legion in the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere, Kerins O’Rahillys will welcome Fossa to Strand Road, Glenflesk host Laune Rangers, and Glen-
beigh-Glencar travel to Beaufort. The final round of group games in the Junior Premier and Junior competitions also take place this weekend.
FIXTURES: Senior – Dingle v Kenmare Shamrocks (Saturday 6pm), Rathmore v Dr Crokes (Sunday 4pm). Intermediate –Beaufort v Glenbeigh-Glencar (Saturday 5pm), Kerins O’Rahillys v Fossa (Saturday 6pm), Glenflesk v Laune Rangers (Sunday 1pm), Austin Stacks v Killarney Legion (Sunday 4pm).

Scotts Lakers announce new head coach and new guard
Ron Howard has been named as the new Scotts Lakers head coach ahead of the 2024/25 season.
The Moreno Valley, California native will also take on the role of Youth Development Officer at St Paul’s, overseeing coach education and implementing a structure to provide the best environment for the club’s juvenile players to learn the fundamentals of the game. Paul’s say Howard’s ability to take on both roles is a “key component of his portfolio” as the club aims to provide a clear pathway from their academy through to their adult team.
Howard comes with an impressive CV with a background in both administration and coaching. He holds a BA in sports management and is currently pursuing his masters in the same field. The 40-year-old is seen as a dynamic and inclusive teacher and communicator. He has coached at youth, collegiate, and pro level internationally in Germany, Italy and China.
The American is taking over the Scotts Lakers head coach role from the outgoing Brian Clarke.
"I am tremendously grateful for the opportunity to serve as the new head coach at Scotts Lakers St Paul’s,” Howard said. “[The club’s] trust in my experience and belief in my vision means the world to me. I am deeply thankful for the warm welcome extended to my family as we

I am excited to be part of a team that is focused on fostering a spirit of unity and growth. I am committed to bringing my passion, dedication, and drive to the court.

FAI CUP: ROUND 3
Kerry FC v Bohemian FC
Sunday 4pm
Mounthawk Park
This is what it’s all about. When the founders of Kerry FC first dreamt of bringing League of Ireland football to the Kingdom, it was the prospect of going toe to toe with the big boys in Dublin that really got the heartbeat racing. While promotion to the Premier Division might still be some time away, the randomness of a cup draw always lends itself to the possibility of a fantasy tie. Something with a little prestige. After seeing off Cobh Ramblers in Round 2, Kerry were rewarded with Bohs at
home in Round 3. It could hardly get more prestigious than that.
Of course, the odds will be stacked against the league’s newest side. Bohs were established 134 years ago and over the course of their proud history they have won the league 11 times and the FAI Cup on seven occasions. They reached the final of this competition twice in the last three seasons, losing to St Patrick’s Athletic in 2021 and 2023. They are currently eighth in the Premier Division, just above the relegation places, but despite their disappointing league form so far this season they will still represent Kerry’s greatest challenge to date.
The Phibsboro-based club reigning league champions Shamrock Rovers in the last round as a Dayle Rooney penalty gave them a 1-0 win. Unsurprisingly, the keenly-anticipat-
ed Kerry v Bohs clash is a sellout with Mounthawk Park expected to be rocking for the visit of one of the biggest teams in the country. The match will be available to stream live via the LOI TV website a cost of €5.
All but one of the other Round 3 fixtures take place on Friday night. Cork City host Derry City, Shelbourne take on Galway United, Waterford play Athlone, Ballyfermot United face Wexford, Wilton travel to Louth to square off against Drogheda, and, in an all-Limerick clash, Treaty go up against Pike Rovers.
On Saturday, Sligo Rovers welcome the students of UCD to the Showgrounds.

They echo my own thoughts. For the past two weeks, the health of the Irish nation got a great injection of the feel-good factor. It was badly needed, the antidote to the summer weather of 2024.
What summer? Not the welcoming sun we expect in July and August, but just good days here and there, more there than here. It has been that way and now that Puck is over it is only a short while
before students return to school. There is plenty of bad news reported each day. The daily diet includes the ever-increasing deaths on the roads despite the efforts of so many organisations, the near-daily reports of murder, violation of personal rights and a whole lot of other negatives.
Still, the nation held its breath just like the Charlton era when Packie and David O’Leary did the improbable. We all knew who put the ball in the English net and Olé, Olé, Olé became the celebratory song of the Irish as it did on Monday last on O’Connell Street when an estimated 20,000 Irish sports fans
welcomed home the Irish Olympians of 2024. The 133 athletes did us proud in Paris, not just the medallists but the whole of Team Ireland. It was Ireland's most successful Olympics.
KELLIE, KELLIE
Work, play and meetings were on hold for the tense but golden moments when Kellie stepped into the ring for her final. Could she win back-to-back gold medals? She delivered as back home on Portland Row, her parents and neighbours swelled with pride, their hearts and not their heads. Her mother's one-liner hit the nail on the head.

Ireland
“Kellie is always the same Kellie to us win or lose, our Kellie.”
I know that part of Dublin’s northside is bedevilled by crime and drug trafficking. Ironically, Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch turned up to support Olympic gold medallist Kellie Harrington at a special homecoming event at Portland Row in Dublin. He was the one who had put money into the local boxing club. Yet out of it all Kellie beamed and returned to her day job in Fairview, not as a nurse, but an ordinary worker. She wasn’t born with a silver spoon in her mouth, yet she is the golden girl who lifted the Irish nation.
Fitzgerald worth in Paris
“A blight fell on my crops, my sheep and cattle died, The rents and taxes were too high, I could not them redeem, And that's the cruel reason why I left Old Skibbereen.”
is bright, writes Eamonn
Kellie delivered as back home, on Portland Row, her parents' and neighbours' hearts swelled with pride
RHASIDAT
Then there is Rhasidat Adeleke, who sprung to life in the European Championships, the new hope in sprints, where Ireland has never really made an impression. She was the first Irish woman to break the 50-second barrier in the 4 x 400m.
The Tallaght hero was magnificent as an individual and also in that dramatic relay team who were pipped on the line for bronze.
Sport can be very cruel. You don’t always achieve what you deserve. Fourth place in the Olympics is a lonely spot. Think back to Eamonn Coghlan and Seán Drea. So near and yet so far away from glory.
The difference between victory and defeat can be minimal. Páidí Ó Sé had a more colourful description.
FOSSA
Fossa native Kieran McCarthy was wellversed in the sport of rowing when he was growing up in Fossa. He is the sports editor of the Southern Star newspaper and he wrote a splendid book a few years ago, ‘Something in the Water’. It is a fine study of why Skibb has produced and continues to produce world class athletes in rowing.
The Ilen river runs by in Skibb and the man with the Midas touch enticed local men and women to sample the sport of rowing. That’s Dominic Casey. Dominic who? You won't see his name in lights or if you do he would shy away from it. Yet he is the human dynamo making Skibbereen Rowing the best in the country and increasingly on the world stage. Isn't that why the O’Donovan brothers were prepared to pull like dogs to claim glory?
Why weren’t the brother pairings in the same winning boat in Paris? Gary was totally honest. “Fintan was faster than me last summer.” Fintan McCarthy had come good, and the fastest duo went on the winning boat. Such magnanimity. Yes, Kieran was spot on explaining why the town of Skibbereen with roughly a population of under 3,000, akin to Kenmare, continues to win world titles. It wasn’t always like that in backwater Skibb. The well-known Irish song tells why an immigrant left his native West Cork town.
They will be flocking back to Skibb after yet another discovery that there is something in the water there.
It is not all glamour. Paul Griffin, a past Olympian from Fossa, said it may look great on the day of the big race with crowds urging you on, but you are all alone quite often in your training. He remembers one morning in particular as he headed down to the lakeshore for an early morning training session in January and he had to break the ice before pushing out his boat.
INJURY
Injury is the big burden of sportspeople and one’s heart had to go out to Ciara Mageean who went to Paris with realistic hopes of a medal but had to withdraw because of an Achilles injury flaring up once more. She won gold in the European Championships in Rome in preparation for the Paris Olympics. Killarney’s Olympian Gillian O’Sullivan made that very point in these pages prior to the Games. Gillian, of course, also had to withdraw from her Olympics in Athens due to a back injury.
“I’m absolutely heartbroken not to be able to compete in my third Olympic Games,” Ciara said. “I gave it everything to make it possible to be on the start line, but time was against me. I want to thank everyone for all their support.” Injury also impacted Mageean at the last Olympics in Tokyo as a calf problem contributed to her exit in the heats.
LOS ANGELES
We can expect many of these heroic Irish sports personalities to be in Los Angeles in four years’ time, and the phenomenal successes of Team Ireland at Paris in 2024 will certainly encourage more budding athletes to don the green geansaí for this small nation.
The 2024 Olympics are over, but there is more to come. Mark the dates in your diary. The Paralympic Games Paris 2024 will be held from August 28 to September 8. We previously mentioned the misfortune of brilliant local Paralympian Jordan Lee who had to pull out of the forthcoming event, which was gut-wrenching for him.
Sport does so much for the health of the Irish nation that whatever resources that can be supplied from the national coffers will be very well spent. Prevention is better than the catch-up cure. The current healthcare budget of €23.4 billion can be cut significantly by investing in the provision of better sports facilities. It’s a no-brainer.

Deerpark to stage 32nd Ricky Kelly Memorial
Excitement is building at Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club as they look forward to hosting their annual Ricky Kelly Memorial Three Ball Scramble event on the weekend of August 25.
This year marks the 32nd staging of the competition in the former club PRO’s memory after he pioneered the staging of its forerunner back in 1991, a year prior to his untimely death.
The Tatler Jack Bar are kindly backing the event once again this year as 2024 marks their 20th year as sponsor.
Play is in 18-hole cards with a total fee of €50 for two cards and a fee of €30 for one card. In order to be considered for the main prize, teams must contain at least one non-registered member of Pitch & Putt Ireland.
Times of play on Friday, August 23 are 2-6pm (last card); Saturday, August 24 10am-5pm (last card); and Sunday, Au-
gust 28 9am-4pm (last card). Presentation of prizes as well as evening entertainment returns this year on Sunday, August 25 and the club will announce further details of same nearer the time.
Last year’s winners were three brothers, the first time it has happened in the competition’s history, as David, Mark and Robbie Harnett all combined to take home the cup.
Following the event itself, the club will look forward to the return of ‘Night Time Pitch & Putt’ for the first time since 2016 on Saturday, September 21, further details of which will be announced in due course.
For the Ricky Kelly, those without Pitch & Putt Handicaps will be allocated handicaps by the organising committee and all those with queries are asked to contact the club in advance. The club invites everyone in Killarney and its environs to take part in this always popular event.

Sprinter Leahy sets new personal best
Killarney sprinter Sarah Leahy set a new personal best en route to gold in the 100m final at the NI & Ulster Senior Track and Field Championships in Belfast last weekend.
Leahy was the only runner to go sub-12 seconds in the heats (11.77) and she carried that form into the big race, clocking an impressive time of 11.54. She was over four-tenths of a second faster than runner-up Roseanna McGuckian (City of Lisburn) who was the only other athlete to break the 12-second barrier. Orla Comerford (Raheny Shamrock) took the bronze medal with a time of 12.07. Killarney Valley woman Leahy had a previous PB of 11.59 which she recorded in Florida in April of this year.

For further context, her new personal best of 11.54 is faster than over a quarter of the participants in the 100m Round 1 heats at the recent Olympic Games in Paris.
County Championship at Flesk Valley on Sunday
This Sunday Flesk Valley Rowing Club will host the final County Championship regatta of the year, in Castlelough Bay on the Lakes of Killarney.
The coastal rowers of Kerry are expected to flock in their hundreds from 14 clubs to the Flesk Valley shore for a programme of 24 races, encompassing all age groups
from U12 to Masters.
This event was first hosted by Flesk Valley very successfully in 2022 but was unavoidably cancelled last year due to bad weather.
“At the moment the weather forecast is favourable and we are really looking forward to a great day of competitive rowing and bringing the colour and energy of a coastal regatta to Killarney,” Flesk Val-
ley’s chairman, John Fleming, said.
“We are very grateful to the Killarney National Park and the Kerry Coastal Rowing Association for their support and encouragement in hosting the regatta.”
John also expressed his gratitude to the Flesk Valley members and supporters for their hard work behind the scenes in putting this event together.
The County Championship regatta is a
key event in the Kerry coastal rowing calendar as it gives clubs much-needed competition in the one-design boats before the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships which take place in Dingle the following weekend.
The regatta will take place at the Flesk Valley boathouses (V93 ED7Y) from 9am to 4pm on Sunday. Entry is free and all are welcome.

Killarney Legion GAA
INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: A quarter final date with Austin Stacks in Connolly Park this Sunday August 18th is the reward for our Senior Men following a hard-fought win over St Mary's in Con Keating Park on Sunday. A stiff wind and a stoic defensive showing allowed the home side to retire to the changing rooms with a slender 0-4 to 0-3 advantage, Rob Leen and David O’Sullivan notching up the scores. The second half needed an injection in urgency and so it transpired as Cian Gammell with two fine efforts from the middle of the field and Davod O’Sullivan’s accuracy pushed us two clear. The Caherciveen side were hanging in there but a well worked move found Shaun Keane in one on one with the South Kerry custodian and he made no mistake to effectively wrap up the game. There was to be no late drama as the game finished on a 1-10 to 0-7 scoreline. That tie against the Rockies has been fixed for 4pm on Sunday in Connolly Park. Team: Brian Kel-
ly, Darragh Fleming, Darragh O’Doherty, Peter O’Sullivan, Jonathon Lyne, Danny Sheahan, Rob Leen (0-1), Jamie Alade, Cian Gammell (0-2), Eoghan O’Sullivan, Darragh Lyne. Denis Sheahan, Sam Benson, David O’Sullivan (0-7), Peter McCarthy. Subs used: Shaun Keane (1-0) for Denis Sheahan, Mark Heffernan for Sam Benson, Cathal Sheahan for Peter O’Sullivan, Gavin Moriarty for Peter McCarthy, Conor Gammell for Jamie Alade.
MINOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Although a depleted side were competitive in most phases of the game, Kenmare’s ruthlessness in front of goal was the difference between the two sides in a Round 1 game played in Direen on Monday night. Even with the breeze to our backs in the opening half it was Kenmare who netted early when two Legion defenders competed for the same speculative Kenmare aerial ball, but it fell to the Kenmare full forward who beat the keeper. Legion got a couple of good points but a second goal from a similar communication issue meant Kenmare led by four points at half time. Kenmare were defending in numbers and their forwards were a constant threat on the counter and an unfortunate turnover led to a third green flag for the visitors. We grew more into the game in the final quarter and a harsh sending off of a Kenmare wing forward give us a bit of impetus, but the lads were denied clear goal chances by good Kenmare defending. We have two more tough games against club championship winners Austin Stacks (Monday August 19th) and fancied Divisional side St Kieran’s (this Monday August 12th at 7pm in Castleisland) but the lads will benefit from these games, and it is important for the club that we bring them on in a tough competition. Final score Killarney Legion 0-9 Kenmare Shamrocks 3-9.
U13 BOYS: U13 East Kerry Division 1 Phase 2. Legion dominated this opening round game with a convincing display over Rathmore. Despite playing against the wind in the first half, Legion’s defence was solid, limiting Rathmore to just the odd foray. The skill level displayed was exceptional, with all players contributing effectively and moving the ball with precision. Their teamwork and individual performances were top-notch, helping them run out impressive winners.
SUMMER CAMP: A very enjoyable and successful summer camp was held during the week in Direen. Close to 80 kids took advantage of what was in general a dry week and great fun was had by all. It is important to acknowledge the Senior players, adults and older juveniles who helped to coordinate the whole effort. Without them the camp would not have been the success it was. Special mention to Donal O’Leary who was at the steering wheel. Amongst the helpers were Liam O'Toole, Noel Leahy, Brian Looney, Ted Healy, Sean Culloty, Tadgh Doolan, Noelle O'Brien, Ellen Coffey, Lauren Horgan, Becci Fleming, Eve Coffey, James Ander-
son, Éanna Kearney, Kathrina Maguire, Ciara Randles, Eoghan O'Sullivan, Jamie Alade, Darragh O'Doherty, Tom Cronin, Sean Hegarty, Eoghan McSweeny, Claire Lyne, Madison Angland, Kate O'Toole, Sophie O'Shea, Lauren MacSweeney, Kate Pierce, Grace O'Shea, Dara Horan, Seán Horan, Caoimhe Horan, James Murphy, Liam Quirke, Samuel Scroope, Ewan McGillycuddy, Mark Looney, Jack Culloty, Darragh Moynihan, Laura Healy, Sinéad O'Leary and Eimear Kearney.
U12 GIRLS: A very successful blitz was held in beautiful conditions on Saturday in the John Mitchels complex. We sent over two teams, and they played five games each, which was thoroughly enjoyed as they faced opposition from outside the usual suspects.
U14 GIRLS: The U14 girls resumed competitive activities on Wednesday evening when they played their opening round of the East Kerry League Division 1. It was always going to be a toughest challenge as they faced the County League Div 1 A champions MKL Gaels. Going into the game depleted, some of our U12 stepped up to the challenge. The girls were competitive in most phases of the game. However MKL was ruthless in all areas of the pitch, making it hard for Legion to work scores. This was our first loss of the season, and despite our outcome, the girls will benefit from playing tougher competitors. Thanks to the referee Mike Devlin, who stepped in at the last minute. Congrats to MKL on a deserving win and thank you to all our patient supporters tonight.

RESULT: Kerry Petroleum Senior Football Club Championship Group 1 Rd 3. Our Club Championship position ended on a high note when our Senior men travelled to Rath Beg on Sunday evening. In an effort to redeem some points they displayed a brilliant performance closing their campaign with a full-time score Spa: 5-10 (25) to Rathmore: 2-6 (12). Unfortunately it was not enough to go beyond the group stages nevertheless the club will contest Senior status for another year.

Dr Crokes GAA
SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 1:09 Na Gaeil 0:08. We travelled to Tralee on Saturday for the last group game of the Club Championship, where we secured our place in the Semin Final next Sunday away to Rathmore. Na Gaeil started the better, winning the hop and scoring the first point of the game in the opening minute. We levelled matters a minute later through a Tony Brosnan point from play. Both teams were evenly matched for the first half, trading scores and defending well. The first half finished level with 6 points each. We seemed to control the second half, having a number of goal opportunities throughout the half. We eventually got that goal we had been threatening through Cian McMahon, after a well worked ball in. We ran out deserving winners and now face Rathmore in the Semi Final on Sunday at 4pm in Rathmore.

Kilcummin GAA
RESULT: Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Club Championship - Kilcummin 1-12 Kerins O’Rahillys 0-16. Our senior team bowed out of this year's championship after losing to O’Rahillys by a single point at home on Sunday last. Having lost away to Laune Rangers in the previous round we needed to win this one but despite a really gallant effort we just came up short. A second half goal by the dangerous Paul O’Shea saw us level with seven minutes
but O’Rahillys finished the stronger and progress to the Q/F next weekend. Our lads can reflect on a campaign that saw us lose by two points and one point in the last two rounds but certainly some positives can be found with many young players getting valuable championship experience. Well done to players and management and we look forward to the O’Donoghue cup later in the year.
Team and scorers: Brendan Kealy, Kevin McSweeney, Dan Moynihan, (0-1) Chris O’Leary, Keelan O’Shea, Dara O’Callaghan, James Nagle, Paul O’Shea (1-5), Sean O’Leary (0-2), Danny Cronin, Cian Foley (0-1), Philip O’Leary, Mark O’Shea (0-1), Kevin Gorman, Gary O’Leary (0-2). Subs used Shane McSweeney, Donal Maher, James Williams, Eoghan O’Donovan, Noel Duggan.
GOLF CLASSIC: Preparations are in full swing for our annual fundraiser which, this year, will go towards the draining and resurfacing of our main pitch. LOTTO: There was no winner on Monday 12th August of the Jackpot for €12,750. Numbers drawn were 06, 08, 14, 17. Consolation prizes of €50 went to Diarmuid O’Callaghan, Mary A. Culloty, Eoghan McMahon, and Tom Nix. The next draw will be on Monday 26th August for Jackpot of €13,000.
Fossa GAA
LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 11/08/2024 for a jackpot of €4,350 were 3, 10, 11, 22. There was no jackpot winner. The €40 consolation prize winners were Niall Myers, Online; Rory McCann, Online; Eamonn Leslie; Laura O’Sullivan, Aghadoe; Lisa O’Neill, Ballyfin Portlaoise. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online via Clubforce. U16 GIRLS: Fossa U16 Girls were on the road again this evening in Rd 4 of the Division 1 County League. We hadn’t far to go to take on near neighbours Milltown, Keel & Listry (MKL) in Listry GAA. Our numbers as ever were tight, but MKL had plenty, and we were required to play the full 15 to include our youngest and those on the way back. With on field conditions wet and a very strong wind Fossa had to face it up in the 1st half. A big defensive effort was needed and that is what we got, and our defence did excellently to blunt the MKL attack. Our girls were miserly conceding an unbelievable 1-02 only against the full gale. With a goal of our own also, which came at the right time, it looked promising for the restart. In the 2nd half the girls slowly got the attacking game going, used their wind advantage and started to get the ball up the field and build a score. They kicked 0-12 in the 2nd half to 0-5 and ran out good winners of a tough, physical but fair game on a final score of
1-12 v 1-07. Well done again to all our players - warriors one and all.
INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: It was real championship football when Ballydonoghue took on Fossa on Saturday evening. The sun shone brightly, and the football lived up to the mood. Jack Kennelly opened the scoring for the home side with a free before Emmett O’Shea equalised for Fossa after just a minute of play. In the 8th minute, Brian O’Seanachain powered through the Fossa rearguard to crack home a goal which was quickly followed by a Jack Kenelly point to put them four points ahead. Fossa didn’t panic and a magnificent 45 from Paudie Clifford was followed by long range points from Emmett O’Shea and David Clifford to get them back into the game, the teams were level by the 20th minute after further scores from Cian and Emmett O’Shea. Then Mikey Nolan cracked home a second goal for Ballydonoghue to put them three up again, a turnover by Darren Ryan, who had an outstanding game all through, set David Clifford up for a point which was followed by scores from Paudie Clifford and Emmett O’Shea to leave the sides all square at the break, 2-04 to 0-10. Both sets of defences were working overtime as each side attacked at every opportunity at the start of the second half, but it was Fossa who made the brighter start. Scores from David Clifford, Kieran O’Sullivan and Emmett O’Shea had them four ahead before Jack Kennelly got the first score for the home side after fifteen minutes of play. Further points from Paul and Jack Kennelly got Ballydonoghue back in the game, Matt Rennie landed a left footed point for Fossa and in the 24th minute, Kieran O’Sullivan intercepted a kickout and he slipped the ball across the square to David Clifford who finished to the net. Ballydonoghue didn’t give up and in the 27th minute, Jack Kennelly caught the Fossa defence napping when he cracked home a free to the net. They pushed hard for another goal, and they nearly got one only for a brilliant reflex save by Shane O’Sullivan and some great defending by the outstanding Cian McCarthy at full back. Paudie Clifford then sealed victory for Fossa with two sublime individual efforts to leave the final score, Fossa 1-18, Ballydonoghue 3-07. Fossa: Shane O’Sullivan, Cian McCarthy, Rian Colleran, Brian Myers, Dan O’Keeffe, Kieran O’Sullivan 0-1, Paddy Sheehan, Cian O’Shea 0-1, Darren Ryan, Harry Buckley, Matt Rennie 0-1, Eoin Talbot, David Clifford 1-6 (1 free), Emmett O’Shea 0-5 (1 free), Paudie Clifford 0-4.
BLITZ: Munster LGFA U12 Blitz held in Fossa GAA Club on Saturday Aug 10th. Huge thanks to all our club volunteers, referees and club personnel who helped make the blitz a success for our visiting teams. Many thanks to all our visiting teams. Thanks

We have four players involved, Mark Kennelly, Dylan O’Meara, Jack Hallissey, Cathal Breen and Fionn Doyle, hopefully they will have better luck in the next few rounds of the championship. We also have two players involved with the East Kerry U15 team Charlie Griffin and Mikey Moroney and the best of luck to them also.
