Judges making their final choices in Tidy Towns

It’s crunch time in this year’s Killarney Looking Good Competition with the adjudicators preparing to make their final deliberations in the coming weeks.

Nominations and observations are being considered and an independent judge – who is not from Killarney – will recommend the winners of the various categories before the winner of the sought-after 2023 overall award is selected.

Awards will be presented in 26 different categories and high achievers in the business and residential community will be honoured at a gala prizegiving ceremony at the close of the tourist season.

In the business community, there will be awards for the best large and small commercial premises, best newly painted premises, best signage and the best retail award with prizes also for the most impressive hotel, public house, restaurant, café, guesthouse and best public building as well as the most improved premises.

In the residential categories awards will go to the best large and small residential areas, best private residence, best roadside garden, best floral display and best friendly planting award.

Other categories include a green hospitality award, a corporate special responsibility award, a restoration award, best school and a special biodiversity award.

Over three decades after it was first initiated, to help improve the aesthetic values of the town, the Killarney Looking Good Competition returned with a vengeance this summer with a new committee, new categories, new sponsors and a new approach.

The project was first launched by the then Killarney Working Group, in 1991, and it has grown in importance with each passing year, culminating in some style

when Killarney won the prestigious overall award in the national tidy towns competition in 2011.

After an enforced three-year absence, due to the pandemic, the competition has now been given a whole new lease of life.

This year also two new categories have been introduced in memory of two remarkable people who played massive roles in keeping Killarney looking its best down through the years.

YVONNE QUILL MEMORIAL AWARD

Yvonne Quill, who passed away last October, was the driving force behind the Killarney tidy towns campaign for several years and she was at the helm when the sought-after overall award was secured 12 years ago.

This year the Yvonne Quill Memorial Award will be presented to the volunteer of the year – a person who the adjudicators consider to be a standout contribu-

tor – in the overall effort to keep Killarney tidy.

Up to the time of his death in January 2020, Fr Michael Murphy was the public face of tidy towns and he played a huge part in Killarney, Kenmare and Sneem winning the overall national award in 2011, 2000 and 1987 respectively. Affectionately known as Fr Tidy, this year the Killarney Looking Good Competition will honour his memory with a special Pride of Place award.

The Killarney Looking Good Competition is organised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Killarney Municipal District Council and the new committee comprises Sandra Dunlea – a daughter of the late Yvonne Quill – Kathleen Foley, Juliette Kelly and John O’Mahony working under the auspices of the Killarney Tidy Towns Committee chaired by former councillor and Tidy Towns champion Michael Gleeson. MD O’Shea & Sons are the new overall sponsors of the competition and O’Mahony Media Ltd is the media sponsor. The competition has been running throughout the tourist season and businesses and residential areas have been monitored on an ongoing basis. Official nomination forms are still available from the public office in the Killarney Town Hall or from Bricín Craft shop and Boxty House on High Street.

‘Killarney in my Dreams’ released 40 years ago this week

Forty years on, the story behind the hit record ‘Killarney in my Dreams’ and how two local entertainers made it onto to live television will be remembered this week ahead of a gala celebration at the INEC in October.

Dermot Moriarty and Sean Brosnan (Gypsy Fever) recalled how legendary RTE DJ Paschal Mooney invited them to appear on ‘Keep It Country’ live from the Rose Of Tralee Festival Dome live on September 1 , 1983.

Dermot and Sean asked Denis Allen of ‘Limerick You’re a Lady’ fame if he could write a song at short notice about Killarney.

‘Killarney In My Dreams’ was recorded in Mullingar under the guidance of the great Basil Hendricks.

“On the first TV show which was live on the night was ourselves, Susan McCann, Shaun O’Dowd, TR Dallas and Jessie and the James Boys. The second show on

the night was recorded for broadcast at a later date. Twenty-four hours later the Dome was blown down by strong winds,” said Dermot.

“Two weeks later the record ‘Killarney In My Dreams’ went on release. We knew it was selling well, I recall sitting at home having lunch with my parents and listening to Larry Gogan as he played new entries to the charts. I can still hear it as if it was yesterday when Larry said first time into our charts Dermot Moriarty and Sean Brosnan and ‘Killarney In My Dreams’. It made it to Number two, the Furey’s were at Number 1 with Steal Away written by Phil Coulter.”

To celebrate this special occasion and Dermot being on Radio Kerry for 33 years a dance will take place in the Gleneagle Hotel ballroom on October 28 weekend with special guests Louise Morrissey, Patrick O’Sullivan, TR Dallas, Paudie McAuliffe Neily O’Connor, Paddy O’Brien, Bernie Heaney and of course Dermot and Sean Brosnan.

Kerry Airport set for expansion

Big changes are coming to Kerry Airport.

The airport's management company has been granted planning permission for several key upgrades.

The main terminal building is set to become two-storey with a new departure gate planned for the extension. An extended arrivals hall, complete with

new luggage belt will be included in the new development.

An extended bar and restaurant in also included in the new proposal as is a new coach set down area.

It is understood that the some of the new extension will be built in the area between the existing main building and the existing emergency building.

The 40th anniversary of song about Killarney that made it to number two in the Irish charts will be marked over the coming months.

Ian O’Connell’s radio show shortlisted for national award

been shortlisted for the 2023 IMRO National Radio Awards.

His weekly show on Radio Kerry, ‘Stand Out with Ian O’Connell’ has been nominated in the Specialist Speech Programme category.

It is just one of 11 categories that the county radio station has been nominated for. Fiona Stack, Radio Kerry’s General Manager, congratulated all nominees and expressed the station’s gratitude to everybody who worked on this year’s entries. She said: “We are very, very proud of all the output across the week on Radio Kerry. We acknowledge and appreciate the work on all of the entries submitted for this year’s awards, shortlisted or not."

Radio Kerry has been nominated 132 times and has won 66 IMRO National Radio Awards in the past 17 years.

The IMRO National Radio Awards invite radio stations annually to submit entries that they feel show a true and thorough representation of the output of the station and its franchise area.

The 2023 Awards ceremony will take place at Lyrath Estate, Kilkenny, on Friday, October 6 at which the Irish broadcast community from across the island of Ireland will gather to announce the winners of the Gold, Silver and Bronze honours.

Mayor of Springfield visit

Killarney Town Twinning Association welcomed the mayor of Springfield to town last week.

Misty Boscher was on holiday in Ireland – part of a large contingent that attended the Notre Dame and Navy American Football game in Dublin last weekend.

Boscher was welcomed to Killarney by Mayor Brendan Cronin and by Sean Counihan who is chair of the Killarney

Town Twinning Association. Mayor Boscher was presented with gifts including a photographic book published by Valerie O’Sullivan and an official Killarney polo shirt.

“Brendan Cronin, as a recently elected mayor is anxious to restore visitations from Springfield which were interrupted by the covid years,” said Mr Counihan. Springfield has been a twin city with Killarney since 1996.

Busy times for Killarney Cycling Club members

Enduro National Championships took place last weekend in Ballyhoura Trail Centre where Killarney Cycling Club had six members participating.

It was another trip to the podium for Jason Murphy as he kept on top of the pace and greasy trails for all six stages and finished in second place in the Master's category.

Patrick Cremin was also smooth on the pedals all day, the fastest of the nonelites in the Senior Category. This great result would normally see Patrick standing on the top step at the end of the day but with the nationals incorporating elite riders within the age categories, Patrick had to make way on the podium for Ireland's three top Enduro racers.

Adam Murphy continued showing great style and form on the trails but an unfortunate mechanical issue on stage one would end up costing him 15 seconds and narrowly missing out on a chance at the Under 21 Title.

Pedal for Grace is back

The National Council for the Blind has announced that the Pedal for Grace cycle event is returning to Firies on September 9.

Grace O’Sullivan is 13-years old and she has a visual impairment called Stargardt disease, which causes progressive sight loss.

Last year’s Pedal for Grace was a huge success and young Grace O’Sullivan and her family, friends and local community raised more than €25,000 for the organisation.

Grace’s mother Mary O’Sullivan said: “We couldn’t have been happier with how the Pedal for Grace went last year and it was all because of the help from the lovely people in our local community and beyond. This year with we’re back with a bang and we hope that those who had fun with us last year will do the same again this year. We would also love to welcome any new friends who want to take part. This event is for everyone.” The event will kick will be based at the Firies Community Centre and registration will open at 8.30am on the day.

The Munster Criterium Championships took place on August 13, hosted by Greenmount Cycling Academy in it's new home of Limerick Race Course in Limerick.

Killarney Cycling Club riders continued their run of strong results from last year's race with Milo Donaldson initiating an attack in the final quarter of the race and riding aggressively to second place.

Mark McGlynn and Frank Doherty worked their way towards the front in the bunch sprint behind to finish fourth and seventh respectively. These three strong finishes resulted in Killarney Cycling Club taking the team prize for the second year in a row.

In recent racing hosted by neighbouring club Sliabh Luachra, Pierce Curtin put in a strong performance in the A4 race finishing second while Luke Costelloe took seventh in the A3 race.

Huge crowd at Kilcummin Comhaltas Celebration

The Kilcummin Village Inn was at capacity with a crowd in excess of 200 people in attendance to celebrate another fantastic year for the Comhaltas Kilcummin branch.

The night, a now annual occurrence is a celebration of the branch, its’ members and supporters and offers a chance for all to come together to celebrate with music and dance.

Shane O’Callaghan, Chairperson of Kilcummin Comhaltas opened proceedings by welcoming all and indicating the

exciting night of entertainment that lay ahead.

All of the age groups involved in set dancing throughout the year demonstrated, once more their skills acquired through many nights of practise through the year. For many their dedication has been rewarded with experience and success across the numerous competitions that the branch had representation in throughout the year - Sult na nÓg, Ceoil an Geimreadh, Fleadh Cheoil Charraí, Munster Fleadh Cheoil and of course Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

Wedding Anniversary Mass St. Agatha's Church

Glenflesk couples who are celebrating milestone wedding anniversaries this year and those who celebrated during Covid attended a special anniversary mass at St Agatha’s Church at the weekend.

The mass was organised by parish priest Fr Jim Linehan and concelebrated by Fr. John O’Donoghue last Saturday evening. The special celebration took place in St. Agatha's Church Glenflesk and was attended by couples who were celebrating their 20th, 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th,

50th, 53rd, 55th, and 60thAnniversaries.

The couples renewed their marriage vows while holding a Crucifix, the symbol of Sacrificial love and blessing.

After the mass the couples were invited to Spillane's Bar for celebratory wedding Anniversary cake and refreshments.

Glenflesk and Kilcummin GAA Clubs Announce KWD as sponsor for OsKaRs 2023

Glenflesk and Kilcummin GAA Clubs have announced KWD as the main sponsor for its upcoming fundraiser, ‘A Night at the OsKaRs’.

The event will take place on December 7 in the INEC.

This is not the first time that the local re-cycling company have got behind the two clubs, as they were also the main sponsor when the OsKaR fundraiser was first tool place in 2018.

On that occasion it was a huge success, attracting a capacity crowd to the INEC and raising much needed funds for both clubs.

This year’s event promises to be bigger and better, with over a hundred actors signed up to act out eight films on the night.

“It’s great to be supporting a local event, the clubs did such a good job five years ago that we are proud to be part of it again,” said KWD’s Sean Murphy. The sponsorship deal was officially launched last week in the Killarney Heights Hotel.

“We are extremely grateful for KWD’s generous support which will play a pivotal role in the success of the event,” says Niamh Dwyer of Kilcummin GAA.

Killarney Camogie Club’s trip to Croker

Friday.

They were among plyers from 64 teams from across Ireland who took part in the Allianz Camán to Croker blitz in Croke Park.

The girls played three games over the course of the day.

Their opponents were Wolfe Tones Bellaghy(Derry), CLG Carndonagh (Donegal) and Castlebar Mitchels (Mayo).

“After registration, the girls had a tour of the dressing rooms and warm up area before following the footsteps of so many legends before them by walking out of the tunnel in the Cusack Stand and onto the hallowed ground of Croke Park.” said PRO Caroline O’Leary.

“Each and every one of our 19 players rose to the occasion and showed

their tremendous skill and talent. Great cheering from the crowd for each score we got and every save we made,”

“The bus home was lively as all nerves for the big occasion had disappeared and there was plenty of banter. All in all it was a fantastic day out, and an excellent opportunity for the girls to play against teams from Derry, Donegal and Mayo in one of the best stadiums in the world.

“Thanks to all the parents and family members for coming along in massive numbers to cheer on our girls from the stand. And thanks to everyone who made the day such a huge success including committee members; trainers Sarah Dineen and Sean Casey, parents and a fantastic group of girls. Credit too to the Camogie Association for organising such a brilliant event, one we will all cherish for a long time.”

Mary Culloty O’ Sullivan is a European award winner

Local singer and songwriter Mary Culloty O’ Sullivan was an award winner at the European Red Carpet Show in Amsterdam last weekend.

The show, hosted by Country Music magazine ‘Fair Play Country Music’ and is attended by over 2.000 artists from all over the world.

There were over 200 winners from the USA, Canada, Australia, Asia, Europe, U.K., Ireland.

For the second year in a row she won the ‘Best Voice’ award.

“To win ‘Best Voice’ two years in a row means the world to me.

“I would like to pay tribute to my husband Paul who travelled with me and is a huge support. Also my musical director and producer Tony O’ Flaherty who brings my songs to life in his recording studio,” she said.

Life in Muckross in the 18th and 19th centuries was re-enacted this week as part of Heritage week celebrations.

Members of Dochas Drama Group, acted out 'Big House' which told the story of the Herbert family’s life and times in the area.

Henry Arthur Herbert and his Mary Balfour Herbert built the present Muckross House. He hosted Queen Victoria on her

visit to his estate at Muckross in 1861 –this event is said to have kicked-started Killarney’s tourism industry.

Actor Liz Ryan played Mary Herbert, and Don Rohan played Henry Arthur Herbert.

2024 Liebherr apprenticeship programme deadline extended

Liebherr Container Cranes has extended the application deadline for its highly sought after 2024 Apprenticeship Programme.

Due to continued demand, they are giving aspiring apprentices an additional week to apply, with the new deadline now set for September 1,2023. This comprehensive programme equips

apprentices with practical skills and academic qualifications. Participants can choose from three disciplines: Electrical, Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitter, or Metal Fabricator. The Liebherr Apprenticeship Programme offers a practical alternative to traditional education and incorporates a mix of hands-on learning and class-

room-based tuition in a well-rounded training experience.

Along with their craft qualifications, apprentices also receive a Level -Six higher certificate in engineering, from Munster Technological University, allowing qualified apprentices to continue with their academic education if desired. Successful candidates can work at Liebherr sites

PAINT LIKE A PRO: HOW TO PAINT YOUR FRONT DOOR

STEP 2: SAND

If your door is wooden, sand the surface lightly (or ‘key’ the surface) with a medium to fine sandpaper (120 – 180 grade). This will enable the paint to adhere correctly when applied. Completely remove any dust from the surface. Sanding is not required for uPVC.

STEP 3: FIX

For a wooden door, use Prestonett Wood Filler to fix any cracks, chips, or holes. Once dry, sand it back so that it is smooth and flush with your door. Completely remove any dust from the surface.

STEP 4: PRIME

As the focal point of your home’s exterior, your front door plays an important role in setting the tone for the rest of the property. Repainting your front door is a quick, easy and very doable way to instantly upgrade your home’s exterior. Read on to learn how to paint your front door.

STEP 1: PREPARATION

First things first, remove all hardware (door handles, numbers, letterboxes etc.) and store them in a safe place. Alternatively, you can leave them in place and protect them with good-quality masking tape such as Deltec Gold Masking Tape.

Lay down a dust sheet to protect the floor.

Clean dirt, grime and dust with a dedicated degreaser such as Fluxaf PowerClean or a simple sugar soap solution. Let the door dry fully.

TOOLS FOR THE JOB:

• Microfibre cloth

• Fluxaf Power Clean or Sugar Soap

• Dust Sheet

• Deltec Gold Masking Tape

• Medium to fine sandpaper (120 – 180 grade)

• Prestonett Wood Filler

Whether or not you need to prime the door will depend on several factors, so it’s best to speak with a member of our expert team first.

For example, if you are painting a PVC door, you will need to use a water-based primer such as Ralston All-Primer. If painting a door previously coated in oilbased paint, you will need an oil-based primer. For this, we recommend Ralston Uni-Primer as this will allow you to follow with a water-based topcoat.

Tip: Both Ralston All-Primer and Ralston Uni-Primer can be tinted into the colour, but don’t be tempted to stop here as these products don’t offer UV protection.

Use a 2” brush or a mini-roller to apply a primer to the door. You will need white spirits to clean if using the Ralston Uni-Primer.

Allow the primer to dry fully according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

STEP 5: PAINT!

Now it's time for the fun part - painting! Use a brush or a roller to apply your chosen topcoat. If you need a second coat, wait for the first one to dry completely.

Tip: Sand the door in-between coats to prevent drips and to achieve a more professional and hardwearing finish.

90 pub closures in Kerry since 2005, 35 since 2019

The rate of decline in rural pubs has accelerated since Covid-19.

A Drinks Industry Group of Ireland analysis shows Irish pubs have declined by an alarming 22.5% (1,937 pubs) since 2005, with an average closure of 114 pubs a year, rising to 152 per year since 2019. There has been a decrease in pubs in every county, with 90 closures in Kerry – 35 of these since 2019. The sector has called on the Government to ease the cost burden on regional small and family-run businesses to ensure their sustainability by reducing Ireland’s high alcohol excise tax over the next two years.

Over 450 pubs nationally have closed in the period since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic with the greatest decreases seen in more rural parts of the country compared with Dublin. Analysis also established that the rate of closures has accelerated in the aftermath of Covid-19, with 349 pubs closing in 2020 and 2021 nationwide. According to an economic and social

analysis of the numbers found in the DIGI report, economist Anthony Foley notes that while public houses play a particularly important role in contributing to the communities in Ireland’s towns, villages and rural areas, smaller local markets and populations mean many pubs in regional counties operate on tight margins making them more atrisk of closure.

The 6,680 pubs operating across the country are at the cultural and social heart of their communities - according to Foley. His analysis also cites the significance of pubs to Irish tourism as providing an extensive network of facilities and services. The importance of public houses as a factor for tourism is most notable in more rural counties including Kerry (with 413 pubs), Cork (856), Donegal (334), Mayo (337) and Leitrim (100) writes Foley.

Ryan Tubridy teases 'new beginning' on social media

Ryan Tubridy has broken his silence this week after negotiations with RTE ended abruptly when he angered new RTE director general Kevin Bakhurst by releasing a statement in relation to a report into his under-declared salary.

Tubridy was due to make a comeback next month on a reduced annual salary of €170,000. However, all traces of Tubs have been wiped from RTE.

Tubridy shared a simple message with his followers letting them know he was looking onwards to the future, he wrote: "A new dawn, a new day, a new beginning. Stay tuned for more…"

Since being dropped by RTE last week, the 50-year-old has been approached by UK news channel GB News about a

potential presenter role at the station.

GB News editorial director Michael Booker told the Irish Sun: "Ryan Tubridy is a fantastic broadcaster. A people’s presenter with great wit and empathy.”

He added that the network keeps a "keen eye" on broadcasters across the UK and Ireland.

'Putin’s Chef' presumed dead

Putin’s Chef turned Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin is presumed dead after his private jet crashed and exploded in a field.

When Prigozhin and his Wagner troops launched their insurrection two months ago, Vladimir Putin made his feelings more than clear. He called it "treachery" and promised that the perpetrators would be punished. The Wagner mutiny had been a direct challenge to President Putin's authority and Putin himself pointed out that the Russian state had been financing Wagner. Money had clearly not bought loyalty.

But it was his creation of the Wagner mercenary group that made him a key player for the Kremlin - and a wanted man across the globe after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

His short-lived revolt against Russia's leadership was the biggest domestic threat to Putin since he took power. The fallout precipitated a fall from power for Prigozhin - and now his possible death.

India on the moon

India on Wednesday landed a spacecraft near the moon's south pole, an uncharted territory that scientists believe could hold vital reserves of frozen water and precious elements, as the country cements its growing prowess in space and technology.

A lander with a rover inside touched down on the lunar surface at 6:04 local time. After a failed attempt nearly four years ago, India made history by becoming the first country to touch down near the little-explored south pole region and joins the United States, the Soviet Union and China in achieving a moon landing. India's successful landing comes just

days after Russia's Luna-25, which was aiming for the same lunar region, spun into an uncontrolled orbit and crashed. It would have been the first successful Russian lunar landing after a gap of 47 years.

Numerous countries and private companies are racing to successfully land a spacecraft on the lunar surface. Japan plans to launch a lunar lander to the moon over the weekend as part of an X-ray telescope mission, and two U.S. companies also are vying to put landers on the moon by the end of the year, one of them at the south pole. In the coming years, NASA plans to land astronauts at the lunar south pole, taking advantage of the frozen water in craters.

Fukushima plant releases radioactive water into Pacific

The operator of the tsunami-wrecked Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says it has begun releasing the first batch of treated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean – a controversial step that prompted China to ban seafood from Japan.

The water release begins more than 12 years after the March 2011 nuclear meltdowns, caused by a massive earthquake

and tsunami. It marks a milestone for the plant’s battle with an ever-growing radioactive water stockpile that TEPCO and the government say have hampered the daunting task of removing the fatally toxic melted debris from the reactors. The pump activated on this week would send the first batch of the diluted, treated water from a mixing pool to a secondary pool, where the water is then discharged into the ocean through an undersea tunnel.

According to Dr Mosley, the key to being more active and energetic before workouts is drinking coffee. Sipping coffee not only induces a sense of freshness every morning but also improves mood, induces alertness but also boosts stamina for workouts. Experts say that drinking coffee every morning gets the brain working, boosts mental performance in many ways and increases the amount of fat that one burns during workouts. Ideally, one must drink a shot of espresso 30 minutes before workouts for best results. But Dr Mosley suggests doing the same an hour before exercise as the

caffeine in it boosts energy levels, relaxes the blood vessels thereby boosting blood circulation all over the body.

Caffeine, which is a stimulation, and antioxidants like polyphenols in coffee have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. In terms of calories too, black coffee contains only three calories per cup which curbs appetite, boosts health and also helps keep a tab on blood sugar levels.

Drinking coffee also improves heart health – as many as three cups a day are associated with a healthier brain and heart. Studies say that people who drink it regularly have a lower risk of dementia, heart disease and stroke. Patients are also likely to have a healthier and better functioning body, particularly the heart.

As per a recent study, drinking coffee stimulates brown fat and the main function of this kind of fat is generating heat by burning calories. Other studies show that women drinking up to two cups of coffee in a day had a lower body fat and abdominal fat portion as compared to those who did not drink it at all. Doctors say that a cup of instant coffee can also do the trick. But it is also advised to not go beyond three cups in a day as it can spike blood pressure and induce insomnia along with dehydration.

Giuliani surrenders at jail in Georgia election

Rudolph W. Giuliani turned himself in on Wednesday in the racketeering case against former President Donald J. Trump and his allies, surrendering at the Atlanta jail where the defendants are being booked.

After his booking, Mr. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, addressed reporters, calling the case “an attack on

the American people.” He then made his way to A 2nd Chance Bail Bonds, a business near the jail.

The case against Mr. Giuliani is a striking chapter in the recent annals of criminal justice. A former federal prosecutor who made a name for himself with racketeering cases, he now faces a racketeering charge himself.

Opel and Vauxhall enthusiasts enjoy Killarney road run

Opel and Vauxhall enthusiasts from all over the country assembled in the Gleneagle Hotel car park on Saturday last for the 16th Annual Ted's Opel Vauxhall Run.

Bringing people and their cars from Donegal, Louth, Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Galway and a mix of other places in between an array of models from various years attended. Also in attendance was a representative from Opel Ireland, one of the main sponsors. Other main sponsors were Cartell.ie and Casey Caravan Services.

As the weather brightened the first leg of the journey began taking the cars over the famous rally stage of Moll’s Gap and

on to Sneem and stopping for lunch at O'Carroll's Cove Bar and Restaurant. After everyone had satisfied their appetite the presentation of Awards took place. A Raffle also took place after the awards. The journey then continued on to Waterville, over Ballaghisheen and Ballaghbeama Passes and returning to the Gleneagle Hotel via Molls Gap again.

“A great day was had by all and the weather held out. Thank you to all who attended and supported the run, the proceeds will be donated to the Dogs for the Disabled, a very worthwhile charity who train dogs to assist people with various disabilities. Keep next year's date in your diary, August 10, we'll see you there,” said organiser Ted O’Connell.

Notice is hereby given that, pursuant to Section 75 of the Roads Act 1993, and the Temporary Closing of Roads Regulations 1994, Kerry County Council is proposing to close to public traffic the following road:

Road Closed: L-11012 Dromkerry/ Gortacollopa Road, Fossa

Road Closing Times: from 8.00 a.m. on Monday, 18th September to 6.00 p.m. on Friday, 6th October 2023, both dates inclusive.

The purpose of the road closure is to facilitate the installation of a new watermain. Diversions will be as follows and will be clearly signposted:

Two Rathmore couples celebrated a unique golden wedding anniversary this week.

Mary Gordon and Timmy Jo Brosnan

and her first cousin Mary Cronin and Charles McCarthy were married in a double wedding celebration at St. Joseph’s Church, Rathmore on August 25, 1973. The two brides are cousins, grew up together and celebrate their birthdays less than three weeks apart.

Congratulations to the Class of 2023! Results day has finally arrived

. You have arrived at an important milestone. Whatever the outcome, celebrate what you have achieved in getting to this point and look forward to what lies ahead. Over the next week there are lots of important dates and deadlines to be aware of. Make sure to take note of them all and don’t miss them.

ACCESS TO EXAMINATION DATA AND VIEWING OF SCRIPTS

Once the results have been issued, check the important dates and deadlines around accessing your examination data and scripts which is done through the Candidate Self Service Portal (CSSP). You must apply to do this, the deadlines are in the couple of days after the exams and can be found on https://www.examinations.ie/cssp/2023/. The examination data will include a detailed breakdown of marks in each subject. You will also have the option to apply to view your exam scripts.

APPLICATIONS TO APPEAL

It you are disappointed with your grade in one or more subjects may wish to appeal the result. Make sure to view your exam script before applying to appeal so you can check for errors. You can be downgraded as well as upgraded on appeal. You can apply to appeal one of more subjects and for a fee of €40 per subject your exam will be rechecked. If you are upgraded on appeal the fee is refunded for that subject.

Applications to appeal must be made through the CSSP by the deadline issued by the State Exams Commission (SEC). Leaving Certificate Applied applications must be made by email (viewlcascript@ examinations.ie) and students will need to access his LCA Viewing Application Form on the CSSP.

CAO ROUND 1 OFFERS

CAO Round 1 offers will be issued to applicants on Wednesday, August the 30th, from 2pm. You will be able to check your offer(s) by logging into the ‘My Applications’ section of www.cao.ie using your CAO number, date of birth and CAO account password. Offers will also be issued by email and SMS text. Applicants who are not receiving an offer will receive a ‘Statement of Application’ email.

The cut-off points for 2023 will also be published by CAO on their website once the offers are issued. You may receive two offers, one from their level 8 list (Honours Bachelor Degrees) and one from level 7/6 (Ordinary Bachelor Degrees and Higher Certificates) and have the option to accept one offer only. You have the option to accept, decline or

Children Mental Health Service “not fit for purpose”

A Kerry Fianna Fâil Councillor has stated that the Health Service Authority has proved itself to be unfit for purpose, following a number of recent reports into the shambolic Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in this country

“It is with a heavy heart that I read that the Inspector of Mental Health Services, Dr Susan Finnerty, in her recent report admitted that she couldn’t provide an assurance to parents ‘that their children have access to a safe, effective and evidence based mental health service,” said Councillor Michael Cahill.

APPLYING TO DEFER A COLLEGE PLACE

They are not guaranteed and are dealt with on a case by case basis. If you want to apply to defer a course, check the deferral application process for the particular HEI and follow it. WHAT TO DO IF NO CAO OFFER IS RECEIVED

If you do not receive a CAO offer you will get a Statement of Application email so the first thing to do is to check the detail of this and follow the instructions.

Check for errors or omissions with your examination number, language exemption or account information and contact the CAO immediately via the Correspondence section of your CAO account. Check that you have the required minimum entry requirements and points. If you are still not entitled to an offer of a place, there is no need to panic as there are lots of options still open.

Please note that there is a lot more to all of this but this info will get all students throught the first post-leaving cert results days.

“The year is 2023 and there are 976 vulnerable children and adolescents waiting for CAMHS treatment in the Cork/Kerry region, the longest waiting list in the country, despite the fact that the population here is lower than other parts. The HSE has treated all these families horrifically, has destroyed their lives instead of providing relief. If the HSE cannot provide access to safe, effective and evidence based health service, then it should be disbanded and replaced with an efficient mental health system” stated an enraged Councillor Cahill.

“If a Restaurant cannot provide food in a clean and healthy environment, if

a night club cannot provide safe dancing, they will be closed down before anybody is adversely affected. These families depending on CAMHS have been subject at times to, no service or an inferior one including the over prescription of dangerous drugs, putting young patients and their families at risk. We can no longer accept this treatment and I am today contacting the Ministers for Health, Stephen Donnelly, Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman and Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler, to demand immediate proposals on how an effective Children and Adolescent Mental Health service can be procured for the families involved, all over Ireland,” added the Rossbeigh-based Councillor.

"I personally know many of the families caught up in the CAMHS scandal in Kerry and I have witnessed first-hand the impact it has had on their lives. It is worse than horrific, if that's possible.”

“Failing an acceptable response from Government Ministers, I will take a Deputation to Táinaiste Micheál Martin’s Office in Dáil Éireann to ensure he is appraised fully of the situation. All these individuals and families must be heard,” said Councillor Cahill.

‘Our girls can hold their heads up high’

In this exclusive interview, Adam Moynihan chats to Kerry ladies’ joint-manager Darragh Long about losing the All-Ireland, his and Declan Quill’s future, and the ‘phenomenal’ progress being made in women’s sport

Darragh, you’ve had a few days to reflect on the final. How do you feel about it now?

Hugely disappointed. Sport is cruel and we all know that when we get into it. That’s just the way it is.

How are the players coping? Are they holding up alright?

Ah yeah, they are. A lot goes into it, you know. A lot of sacrifice and a lot of dedication. This was our fourth year. The first two years we were building and in the last two years we’ve really taken off. So they’ve put their lives on hold for the past 24 months, each and every one of them. We weren’t cocky or anything going into the All-Ireland but we were very confident in what we had been doing. But we never got going on the day. It was just one of those days. It certainly wasn’t the kind of performance we’ve come to expect from this team. What do you put that down to?

We haven’t really had the chance to go back and watch it. I won’t be watching it for a couple of months I’d say! We just never got out of the blocks. In the last three or four games we started really well. But Dublin rattled off two scores within 60 seconds. We had the goal chance with Louise [Ní Mhuircheartaigh] that went over the bar… But the prep and everything was brilliant. Physically the girls are in the best shape they’ve ever been in. The likes of Louise would testify to that. I think she’s probably played the football of her life over the last two seasons.

Hopefully that might culminate in an individual honour with a Player of the Year award in a couple of months’ time. I think that would be richly deserved. We’re not sure what happened (on the day). I’m guessing if I was (Dublin manager) Mick Bohan I would have targeted the first quarter to go after us because we had been getting such good starts. I don’t want this to sound like sour grapes but the foul count was 26 to 14. That accumulated over the course of the 60 minutes and look, we’d be feeling a little bit aggrieved that there wasn’t further punishment at times. But that’s sport for you. The better team won on the day. I thought we had a good second half, we just left ourselves with too much to do.

Dublin’s tactical fouling was definitely noticeable. They committed 91 fouls in their last three games – over 30 fouls per game – while their opponents committed 40. I don’t want to put words in your mouth but is there something wrong with the rules if a team can foul that much and go unpunished?

I don’t know. I suppose the stats are there for everyone to see. There’s definitely a bit of coaching gone into it. It’s gamesmanship. If we had done it, we’d be saying that we pushed the rules to the limit of what the ref is going to allow. There are plenty of clips from the last day of players soloing, dropping the ball with the right hand, and the left hand is being pulled back. Whether that’s men’s football or ladies’ football, that’s a foul.

I know have been calling for changes in

what’s allowable in terms of physicality, but even so we’d still be calling for that to be a foul. We can’t go down the road of changing everything but that’s just a blatant foul. And if those accumulate in the ladies’ game, that’s a yellow card. But the count shows that fouls were given for other things but there’s no punishment.

I did some research and a yellow card was issued in the men’s All-Ireland series once every 4.7 fouls. In the women’s All-Ireland series, a yellow was issued once every 72.8 fouls.

[laughter] Are you serious?! I mean…

That’s mad. That makes no sense because it’s three ticks and it’s a yellow (in ladies’ football). Going back to that game in Parnell Park, I’m not going to name anyone, but there are certain players who made six, seven, eight fouls, and there was no yellow. And we had two players sent to the sin bin. Am I saying there’s favouritism? I’m not. But there is definitely a lot of wiggle room within the laws of the game. We paid the price for it.

Are there fewer yellows in ladies’ football because the consequences are different? A yellow in ladies’ football sends a player to the sin bin for ten minutes. Are refs reluctant to do that for pushing and holding fouls?

Yeah, maybe so. Everyone has a different interpretation of the tackle rule in ladies’ football so it’s very hard, unless you define it in black and white. And I really don’t know how to do that. Like, that charging rule in ladies’ Gaelic football

is one of the most frustrating rules there has ever been.

But, again, the main point is that the better team on the day won. We can talk about tackles and coaching of tackles all day long but, unfortunately, it’s not going to change the result.

Some Kerry players are expected to retire between now and next season. Do you know how many at this point? We have no idea at the moment, Adam. I suppose, invariably, myself and Declan Quill’s future is connected to some of the more experienced players’ futures as well. We’ll have to see what happens over the next couple of weeks. We’ve been on the road with this group for four years. If you add another year on to that, it will be five. That’s a long time. We’ve sacrificed a lot, same as the girls. The girls can walk down the streets of Tralee and Killarney with their heads held high after what they’ve done for ladies’ football in this county.

I have no doubt there will be retirements. Who and how many, we don’t know. Whatever happens, there’s enough respect and honesty within our group that there will be phone calls made to talk things through before any decisions are made. In a couple of weeks’ time, we’ll see where we end up. It will be made public then at that point because I don’t think we can drag things out for too long. Kerry ladies’ football was there before myself and Dec and it will be there long after us. We have to make our decision with Kerry’s best interests in mind.

Is there any possibility of one of you staying on? Or are you a tag team forever?

[laughter] Well, we’re definitely a tag team for the Kerry ladies. I think it would be very hard for one of us to stay on. As Dec said in some interview, what we do is very different to what Jack O’Connor does. When Jack rocks up, the bibs are washed, the balls are ready, the cones are there, the sponsorship is sorted – he doesn’t even know about it. Everything is done. Whereas, in our case, we wash the bibs, we pump the balls, we sort the jerseys, we do the fundraising. There are huge time commitments for us and for our families too. Dec has three kids and I have two. My young fella was three when we started with Kerry and he’s nearly eight now. He has grown up amongst 36 fantastic ladies, who are fantastic babysitters too because he’d go off with any of them at any stage!

I would say, whatever our future holds, if it’s with the Kerry ladies, we’ll be together. If our decision is to step away… Look, there might be no one who wants us either! Our decision will be solely based on talking to our experienced core of players, our leadership group, and making the best decision for the group that’s there.

Do you have ambitions to manage other teams whenever your time with Kerry comes to an end?

Oh yeah. Definitely. Myself and Dec have always talked about it. Five years ago our roles would have been with our clubs and with development squads. You develop a grá for the managing side of things and it’s definitely something we want to build on. If any other teams want us, there will be discussions at that stage. The two of us would be hugely ambitious on the management side of things. But right now we’re joint managers of a hugely successful Kerry ladies team so we have to decide our future with this group first. How much progress has been made in the ladies’ game over the past four years, both nationally and locally?

Nationally, I think it has grown immensely. I think it’s a hugely attractive sport to watch. The way the men’s game has gone with the over and back and in and out, it’s not what it was. The speed of the ladies’ game and the conditioning… Dublin started it and Meath took it to another level. That has added to the pace and power of the game – and I think the laws have to reflect the conditioning of the players and the work they’re doing in the gym.

Locally, I think the legacy that this group of girls will leave for girls around the county is absolutely phenomenal. Four years ago the ladies were at a bit of a low ebb. Things weren’t going well for them and maybe it wasn’t the happiest group of all time. What they have done over the past four years is incredible. The crowd that travelled to see them in Croke Park was huge and he support from around the county, both male and female, was massive. The number of players is increasing because now, instead of a young girl say-

ing David Clifford is her hero, she can say that it’s Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, it’s Síofra O’Shea, it’s young Amy Harrington. I think Kerry ladies’ football is in a hugely positive place at the moment.

You mentioned Síofra, we were all shocked to see her take to the field in the final after she tore her ACL just a few weeks ago. What actually happened there?

I think it was the best kept secret in the country that Síofra was going to play. There were no mind games or anything like that. The reason we kept it quiet was that the knee could have gone in training before the final so we didn’t want the whole country thinking she was back, and then to put her through the highs and lows of that again.

She’s going for her operation next week. She has a torn ACL. But we were able to get her up to Santry - Colm Fuller from Killarney was very helpful – and they took a look at her and she passed every test that they put her through. If it was any other game and not an All-Ireland final, the risk wouldn’t have been taken.

We had discussions with Síofra’s parents and with Síofra, and we kept it away from the group until the week after the Mayo game because we didn’t want it to be a distraction.

She played 30 minutes of football in the Fitzgerald Stadium the day of the meet and greet with the fans. We just got her off the field and changed before ye all came in. She played another 20-25 minutes on the Tuesday night and she was absolutely lifting. The people in Santry called her a medical wonder, but that’s a testament to the effort and the work she put in after her last ACL injury. Her muscles around that area are just so strong. As the team’s captain she was willing to take the risk and she really wanted to help us try and win the game. There is precedent there: Ciara O’Sullivan of Cork did the same thing and Henry Shefflin did too. Once the doctors and Síofra and her parents were okay with it, we talked to the group and they were okay with it too. To get to run out as captain for the final with Louise by her side was a huge thing for her. And it was great for the team be-

cause we all hold Síofra in very high regard. That girl is probably going to go on to become one of the greatest players of all time, that’s the potential she’s got. We have no doubt that she’ll put her head down, she’ll work hard, and she’ll be back playing for Kerry next year.

Is this team shifting perceptions about women’s sport in general? In the last few months I have certainly noticed more men talking about the Kerry ladies with genuine interest.

Definitely. We were in O’Connor’s pub in Kenmare on Tuesday and the amount of old fellas drinking their pint or their hot whiskey wanting to talk to the players and wanting pictures… It’s phenomenal. Even my own father, I don’t think he missed a game this year. Down at my club, Austin Stacks, they’re talking about the team - they’re all experts now! Twelve months ago they couldn’t name five players on our panel. Now they know them all. That will tell you where ladies’ football is at.

The support that the men’s team has shown our group as well has been massive. Anything they do, the rest of the county will follow. Earlier on in the year when that picture was taken in Currans of the boys standing side by side with the girls, I thought that was brilliant. Kerry were the first county team to put that kind of picture out. They had no hesitation in standing in and putting their names to that and supporting the girls. As I said, we’re just in a hugely positive place and it’s up to all of us to keep that going.

Kerry Club Championship round-up

It is still all to play for with varying fortunes for local clubs after two rounds group games in the Kerry Club Football Championships. Round 3 games will still be critical for the knockout series.

SENIOR

Spa are in great scoring form and this continued on Saturday last where they made light of the challenge of Na Gaeiland away in Killeen at that.

Spa took the initiative in that first half making full use of the wind by hitting Na Gaeil with 2-9. The home side could only manage four points, even with the Kerry midfield of Diarmuid O’Connor and Jack Barry i lár na pairce.

Na Gaeil did improve in the second half but Spa were out the gap thanks to goals by top scorer Evan Cronin, (1-2), Mike Foley, and Cian Tobin (1-1). Kerry star Dara Moynihan was also very prominent pitching in with three points in this 13-point win.

It was never going to be easy for Rathmore to win away to Dingle, having won the opening round in a canter versus Kerins O’Rahillys.

All-Ireland intermediate champions Rathmore did manage three goals, but Dingle needed this one badly having lost out by a single point to Dr Crokes in Round 1.

Dingle won the toss and decided to play against the wind in the first half. That was vital in this victory. There were five goals in all with the home side winning comfortably 2-14 to 3-6. Barry Dan was a key man for Dingle.

Rathmore have home venue against Crokes in their vital Round 3 match and they will be hoping to make the most of their elevation to senior club ranks. Meanwhile, Dr Crokes had a big home win over Kerins O’Rahillys. After a sluggish start it was just three points to two in favour of Crokes at half-time.

Stevo delivered a strong motivational speech at the break and they romped home to a 2-11 to 0-5 victory over the Narries.

An understrength O’Rahillys side were further weakened by the absence of the injured Tommy Walsh. They played very defensively in the first half as Crokes spurned several scoring opportunities. However, the Killarney team stepped up several gears in the second half with goals by Cian McMahon and

Mark O’Shea putting the game out of the reach of a poor Rahillys team, who were already hammered by Rathmore in the first round.

The game ended in injury time with a flare up where referee Billy O’Shea issued three red cards. Diarmuid O’Sullivan got a second yellow and then Con Barrett delivered a very high challenge. He went. Kieran O’Leary was also sent off for retaliation.

Most pleasing for Crokes is that they were able to bring on three veteran players in the final quarter. Fionn Fitzgerald has been out of play for a year after sustaining severe knee injuries. Dáithí Casey, the ever-reliable free taker, and veteran Kieran O’Leary also entered the fray. O’Leary’s cameo appearance was short lived.

A key player for Crokes was the ageless Brian Looney, the scorer of two points and the provider for so many more.

INTERMEDIATE

Legion had it all to do in their home game against Laune Rangers. It was nip and tuck all the way in this evenly contested game before former Kerry star James O’Donoghue shot the winning point in the closing stages.

His former Kerry teammate Brian Kelly made two brilliant saves to deny a much-improved Laune Rangers side. Another key player for Legion in this 0-14 to 1-9 win was William Shine. That makes for an eagerly awaited Round 3 game as Kilcummin will be at home to neighbours Legion. Kilcummin continue to show winning form with an easy win over Currow having beaten Laune Rangers easily in Round 1. Gneeveguilla did well to rally and draw level away to Beaufort in a thrilling fivegoal encounter. Final score: Beaufort 2-13 Gneeveguilla 3-10. Meanwhile, Fossa continue to prosper in the intermediate ranks, having won the 2022 All-Ireland junior title. They were always in top against St Mary’s, who did stage a comeback, but the Clifford inspired Fossa side had plenty to spare in this 1-16 to 2-10 win.

Glenflesk will be very happy with their win away to An Ghaeltacht, 1-13 to 1- 11. It is never easy to win at Gallarus but Glenflesk did the business. Meanwhile, in the Tralee local derby, Austin Stacks gave ample warning that they want to return to senior status with a 2-10 to 1-9 win over John Mitchels.

Street League revived again after 99 years

The 99 is a very popular ice cream cone and 99 was very much in the minds of Dr Crokes juvenile club officers David Byrne (secretary) and Eoin Brosnan (chairperson) when they rolled back 99 years on Sunday last with the revival of the Killarney Street League.

The streets and lanes of Killarney in 1924 were teeming with big families and with the demographic changes in the Killarney of 2023, the organisers assembled teams coached by former Crokes players. It caters for male and female players U6 through to U17. All teams are mixed and age appropriate.

The league got underway on Sunday last with Team Brosnan (Amanda), Team Fitzgerald (Fionn), Team Cooper (Colm), and Team Buckley (Johnny) involved.

David Byrne told the Killarney Advertiser that they had 200 players signed up with 40 coaches to look after the 20 teams.

“The response was magnificent and the commitment of the four team leaders who are also former Kerry stars made a huge difference.

“Some young players were engaging for the first time, while the competition and skill levels as we went up the age ranks made it a great spectacle.

“We had so many willing helpers as coaches, mentors and referees that it became a real Sunday evening for the various families. The social aspect of the event was hugely important in our preparations. Parents, grandparents and carers really got into the swing of it.”

1924

On 18 October 1923, The Kerryman reported on a meeting of the Dr Crokes which decided to form an Inter-Street football league and to present a silver cup to the winners.

At last, local competitive football fixtures got underway in 1924 with Round 1 between Main Street and New Street (referee Conno Healy) and College Street v High Street (referee Small Jer O’Leary). There were hectic games right through to the final where, according to the late Reddy O’Connor: “admission is 3d (old Irish pennies) enough to suit the poorest pocket. The entrance (to the Cricket Field, Flesk Bridge) is by the gate, not at Woodlawn or the arch bridge. Come and see football as it should be played”. With only one club in town up until the Legion was founded in the Temperance Hall (now O’Shea Tyres/Garage, High Street) in 1929, many young men were deprived of football competition. Ladies football didn’t exist at that time although camogie got underway in the 1930s.

Kerry FC bow out of cup

Kerry FC are finding it so difficult to secure a win in the LOI. Their many appearances for the first time at senior level have been very tough, losing most games.

Still, Billy Dennehy is very hopeful that his young side will gel. The FAI Cup offered a new lease of life with a win in Round 1. However, that escape hatch disappeared last week when they lost 1-0 to Premier Division side Drogheda Umited. The game was at home in Mounthawk so hopes were high. However, Drogheda, who are in relegation trouble, scored after seven minutes. A cross into the box on the right side from Dayle Rooney broke to Kyle Robinson. He scuffed the shot and surprised Lee Axworthy as Kerry’s goalkeeper got a hand to it, but the ball trickled into the back of the net to give

the Premier outfit the lead.

The best Kerry FC could manage was a Seán McGrath goal attempt.

The first substitutes introduced were Kennedy Amechi and Rob Vasiu. They lifted the spirits right away and helped take the game to the opposition, but Drogheda prevailed.

Kerry FC are back in League of Ireland action today (Friday) as they travel to Limerick to take on Treaty United.

The Killarney Street League continued to thrive in the 1930s, but then died away until 1959 when Michael Coiny O’Connor, Murt Galvin, Jameso Donoghue, Bernie O’Connor, Jackie Looney, Brian Moroney, John McCarthy, Joe Sheehan and J. Fleming met. Four teams were affiliated: Kilcoolaght, Ballycasheen, High Street and Moyeightragh, who were the eventual winners.

The Street Leagues produced several players who starred with the Kerry teams. A Town League for minors was started in 1929. In that first minor final CTS (Catholic Truth Society) defeated New Street 2-5 to 1-2. Referee was Dr Eamon O’Sullivan.

The Town Leagues spawned the Killarney Medal Tournament which helped pay off the debt incurred by the erection of the statue of Christ the King, Church Place at the Hahah.

This year there were many commemorative events to mark the centenary of the end of the terrible Irish wars, the War of Independence and most bitter of all in Kerry, the Civil War. People were fed up with war and the infamous Cogadh na gCarad ended officially in 1923. In the previous year and for obvious reasons sport was practically non-existent and that continued even after the Truce was called. The legacies of bitterness lasted as

the new Irish Free State was born. More than anything else sport and particularly football became the magic potion, the balm and the soothing agent to assuage the bitter memories of the Civil War. Thankfully, that terrible era in the life of Ireland, Killarney included, ended. Meanwhile the current Street League continues this Friday evening (25th) with games scheduled for 6.30pm and 7.15pm. Then Round 3 and the final are scheduled for Friday, September 8. “We’re planning a special night for all in the clubhouse and the presentation after the games that evening,” David Byrne said.

The Aussie Rules talent drain

All sporting teams try very hard to retain the players they have nurtured from juvenile academies through to senior. However, a significant number never play beyond minor level and the reasons why are many.

Most minors now go to 3rd level education, move away from home, seek employment elsewhere, emigrate, develop new relationships, become parents and so on and so on.

Also, players may transfer from their own club to ones in other counties where they are employed. Shane Walsh, the brilliant Galway sharpshooter in the 2022 All-Ireland final, is a case in point, moving from his own small rural club in Galway join up with Kilmacud. This week we received confirmation that an elite player will soon be leaving Kerry. Youngster Rob Monahan will be departing for Australia in the autumn, taking up a contract with Aussie Rules side Carlton Blues.

I was very impressed by this fine young player at colleges level, particularly in the Park where he almost defeated St Brendan’s College in Corn Uí Mhuirí by scoring seven points. He was a fine Kerry minor, and part of the Kerry U20 team that won the 2023 Munster title but lost out to Sligo in the All-Ireland semi-final. The 18-year-old will be a huge loss to the

Ardfert footballers and to the Kilmoyley hurlers. He was certainly on the radar for a Kerry senior call up.

He was a key man for Ardfert on Sunday last in their Club Championship match against Listowel.

An Ardfert club official said: “Rob informed us last weekend that he was going to Carlton for a two-year contract. It's a great opportunity for him. He had been at trials and testing over the last couple of weeks, and it worked out well, so we wish him the very best of luck in that.

“He's just a wonderful athlete really. He's a very accomplished hurler as well with Kilmoyley, and he was with the Kerry U20 footballers this year obviously and had been a minor previously. He's been very good and very effective with Ardfert in the last two years, and with St Brendan's in the county championship last year, he had a stellar campaign.

“Rob's a wonderful athlete, kicker, fielder, scorer, he has the full package really. It's great for him. He just did the Leaving Cert there in June. I'm sure his results will be out shortly, but obviously they won't bother him now for a bit.”

The likelihood is that he will be aroufor the club and county championships but he will probably be gone Down Under before the North Kerry Championship starts.

Most counties lose star GAA players to

the Aussie Rules. Kerry lost the likes of Tadhg Kennelly, Mark O’Connor, Tommy Walsh and Stefan Okunbor.

Weren’t we fortunate that David Clifford and Seánie O’Shea weren’t lured Down Under. Scouts tried very hard to get Clifford to go professional, but he opted to stay with Fossa and Kerry. He was the one they really wanted. Dublin’s Ciarán Kilkenny went to the Aussie game but returned to rejoin Dublin and win several All-Irelands.

LGFA

The development of elite LGFA players produced outstanding female competitors such as the great Cora Staunton who won four All-Irelands with Mayo and 11 All Stars. I believe if she had been in the forwards for the Mayo men’s teams the Sam Maguire would have crossed the Shannon a few times. Bríd Stack and the Kellys also come to mind. Understandably, it is difficult for clubs to see their elite players departing but they should not try and prevent them bettering themselves in the professional game.

That being said, I believe that from viewing the robust tackling in the Australian football, those who return usually are never the same after those crushing injuries which are part of the Aussie’s game.

Tommy Walsh is a case in point. He

suffered horrific leg injuries and even though he recovered sufficiently to win an All-Ireland with Kerry and club success with Kerins O’Rahilllys, the best sporting years of his life were Down Under. He was never quite the same when he returned to the GAA.

Jim Stynes of Dublin was the first real success story in Australian Rules. Kennelly of Listowel did exceptionally well of course and is one of the chief scouts/ advisors, sourcing the best up and coming sport stars for conversion to the Aussie game. He is akin to the role of the soccer scouts that come to Ireland to lure the bright young skilful soccer players to sign for one of the cross-channel clubs.

The money is good and a rookie in the AFL earns about €40,000, without even playing a game for the senior side. Players are paid for each senior match that they do play in and that varies between $3,000 and $5,000 per appearance.

Indeed, Tadhg Kennelly said: "You have to be able to offer him (an Aussie player) $80,000. He has to have three return flights home a year for him and his parents and he has to have free rent and a free car for the first two years."

The top established AFL player can enjoy a nice average league wage of €204,000 per annum.

INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Better late than never for our Senior Men as they eventually outpaced a fiercely competitive Laune Rangers side is this Group C encounter played at a lush Direen. They would be grateful to custodian Brian Kelly whose heroics denied the Killorglin side at pivotal moments. When the visitors did storm the gates, it prompted a 0-6 to 0-1 scoring run in the final ten minutes to secure the precious two points. The first half was an even affair with Eoghan O’Sullivan, Padraig Lucey, Ryan O'Grady and William Shine sending the teams to the dressing room with the home side one point ahead, 0-5 to 0-4. With the elements in their favour you'd expect the hosts to push on, but a combination of missed chances and stubborn opposition had the Launesiders ahead entering the final eight minutes. But points from Shine (2) and Jamie O’Sullivan (2) gave Peter McCarthy the chance to draw level. Half time substitute James O’Donoghue hit a boomer to get the noses in front and an Eoghan O’Sullivan point sealed the deal. A hard-fought win secures a quarter final place with the upcoming trip to Kilcummin deciding the table toppers. Final score Killarney Legion 0-14 Laune Rangers 1-9.

U13 BOYS: Our U13 Boys participated

in the prestigious Rose Cup in Tralee on Saturday and emerged as winners of the Shield Competition. We were drawn in a group with Ballymac, St James Galway and Milltown Castlemaine. We had good victories over Ballymac and Milltown Castlemaine and lost to a strong St James Galway Team. This qualified us for the semi-finals where we overcame St Senan’s before winning the final against Austin Stacks. A great achievement for the boys to emerge as winners in such a well-run competition. Thanks to all our supporters for the encouragement throughout the tournament.

U12 GIRLS: The Legion U12 Girls represented our club very well on Saturday at the U12 Munster LGFA blitz which was hosted by Moyvane GAA. It was a really well organised blitz which had an emphasis on friendly match play and the spirit of good sportsmanship. Legion entered two teams into the blitz and all 23 girls had plenty of game time and a lot of fun. The hosts treated us to an excellent spread of food and beverages. A great day out for the club and for the Legion girls was had. Thank you to the supporters who travelled, the coaches who made the day happen and our most gracious hosts. Next up is the County League final game for the Green Team away to Beaufort on Tuesday night. Earlier in the week there were no rewards in our Legion U12 Girls White team final against a strong Laune Rangers team. In the first quarter, we got off to a slow start, conceding a number of goals, which kept Laune Rangers firmly ahead for the rest of the evening. We steadied the ship thereafter and delivered some nice points to help the scoreline. We struck back a number of times, but alas, the die was firmly cast in Rangers favour. We'll take some lessons from it and head back to the training ground. Thanks to all who made the trip!

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: In the second round of the Kerry Petroleum Club Championship, we comfortably secured our second win when we travelled to Kileen, Tralee to play Na Gaeil. The game was very one sided with our lads giving us another inspiring performance. We now meet Kenmare in the final group game of the competition. This game will take place at home in Spa this coming weekend Saturday 26th at 6:30pm.

RESULT: Club Championship Rd 2 Dr. Crokes 2:11 Kerins O’Rahillys 0:05. We continued our winning streak in the Club Championship with a 12-point win over Kerins O’Rahillys at home on Saturday evening. The game started slow and scores were hard to come by with both defences on top. Our first half points came from the boots of Mickey Casey and Michael Potts. Half time Dr. Crokes 0:02 Kerins O’Rahilly’s 0:03. The second half began a lot livelier than the first with Rahilly’s Barry John Keane coming close to raising the green flag from the throw in. Brian Looney opened the scoring with a fine point from play. We worked patiently in the second half, working well and taking our chances. The score of the game came from the boot of Brian Looney in the 6th minute of the half. One minute later Micheal Burns worked well and made a great pass into Cian McMahon who slotted the ball passed the Rahillys number 1. We finished the game with a very experienced team with Kieran O’Leary, Daithi Casey and Fionn Fitzgerald all coming on throughout the half. We now face Rathmore away next weekend.

STREET LEAGUE: Our Street League began on Sunday last. 200 boys and girls will be taking part with almost 40 coaches looking after 20 teams We continue on Friday August 25th.

Following our victory over Laune Rangers in Rd 1, we travelled to Currow on Saturday knowing that a victory would most likely qualify us for the Quarter-Finals of the Intermediate Club Championship. We started brightly kicking over six points without reply but Currow settled and fought back with a goal and reduced the arrears to four points. A splendid goal from Sean O’Leary got us back on track and we lead 1-12 to 1-3 at half time. We dominated the second half and goals by Philip O’Leary twice and Mark O’Shea saw us run out comfortable winners. EAST KERRY GAA ALL STARS LAUNCH: A great night was had by all at the launch of the 2023 East Kerry All Stars at Gleneagle Hotel on Thursday last, August 17. With each club represented by juvenile players, there was a great atmosphere at the venue. Assistant PRO Michael O’Mahony was MC for the evening, while Acting Chairman of the East Kerry Board, Gary O’Halloran, explained the layout for the awards night. Paul Brennan, the Sports Editor of the Kerryman, Deter Gogsch, assistant manager of the Aquilla Club, and Father Paddy O’Donoghue, of the Dr O’Donoghue family, were the guest speakers. Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club

MUNSTER INTER-COUNTIES: Well done to club members who were involved in the three Kerry Men’s teams that that all won medals at the respective provincial competitions in Raffeen Creek in Cork last weekend. Fintan Martin and Brian Moloney played their part in Kerry’s success in Saturday’s Junior event as they will now go forward with the Kerry team to face Leinster winners Louth in the National Inter-County Challenge in September. Gearoid Cronin and James Fleming won silver medals with the Intermediate team meanwhile in their event last Sunday while there were bronze medals for Damien Fleming and John McGrath with their performance with the Senior team.

NATIONAL U16 STROKEPLAY AND INTER-COUNTY: Best Wishes to our club members heading to Seapoint in Termonfeckin, Co Louth on Saturday for these events. We wish them a safe journey up as well as a safe journey home.

WELL DONE: Great to see club members doing well in other sports at the moment. Ryan McCarthy made the final of the Kerry Boys Golf Championship in Ballybunion last week while Joey McCarthy won a County Minor Championship medal with East Kerry on Monday night. Well done to both.

Killarney Rugby

AVA LINES OUT FOR MUNSTER: A huge congratulations to our own Ava O’Malley of our U18 girls, who started for Munster U18 girls in last Saturdays Interpro against Connacht at Musgrave Park in Cork. Ava scored Munster’s try on the day and the girls take on Leinster next weekend at Energia Park. Very well done Ava, we are so proud of you.

CAR WASH: We have organised a Car Wash in support of our forthcoming Youths trip to Toulouse next Easter so please support this fantastic cause. Simply come along to Ross Products, located off the bypass on Upper Lewis Road on Saturday the 02nd of September between 10am and 4pm and get your car washed while you enjoy complimentary tea or coffee. All proceeds go towards the tour to Toulouse next Easter, so all support very much appreciated.

MINIS RETURN: Our Minis return to training for the new season from Saturday the 2nd of September at Aghadoe. Boys and girls born between 2012 and 2018 are very welcome. For details give Minis Coordinator Dave Hickey a call on 087 2546290.

YOUTHS RUGBY BACK: U14, U16 and U18 girls rugby training returned for the new season from Wednesday the 9th of August last. Training will take place between 7pm and 8:20pm. Meanwhile U14boys returned last Wednesday at Aghadoe and continues every Wednesday at 7pm.

U16 boys returned last Thursday at 7pm and U18’s are training every Tuesday and Thursday. New players and existing players very welcome.

SENIOR TRAINING: Senior training has returned for the new season at Aghadoe and takes place each Monday and Thursday at 7:30pm. New players very welcome. For details contact John O’Connell on 086 8525116 for details.

LAND ROVER RAFFLE: Killarney RFC are honoured to be chosen as one of the charities for this year’s Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Raffle with a wonderfully restored 1979 Land Rover the top prize, as well as a host of other amazing prizes. Tickets are only €10 each and all funds raised by the club go towards the development of our new clubhouse. Simply contact any committee member or if you could sell some tickets for us, it would be very much appreciated. Please support this amazing fundraiser.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

CUP: This Sunday the 27th, we are back in competition mode, fishing for the accolade of the Church Island Cup. Competition commences at Ross, with a start of 1030am and ashore for 6pm . Also at present we are looking into a juvenile event for the weekend of the 2nd/3rd of September and hopefully will have more details by the time Sundays Competition commences.

Killarney Valley AC

MASTERS: The National Masters Championships was held on Saturday 12th August in Tullamore. Alan Delaney came 1st in the M40 High Jump and the 110m Hurdles. Derek Pyne came 2nd in the M45 Long Jump and 200m and 3rd in the 400m. Maureen O’Shea came 2nd in

the W50 Shot Put and 3rd in the Discus. Congrats and well done to them.

BANNA: The Banna 5K/10K Run was held in the beginning of August hosted by St. Brendan’s AC Ardfert and well done to Darragh O’Leary who came 2nd in the 10K and Noel Rice who came 6th in the 5K.

TRAINING: We will return to training Monday 28th August for our Cross Country Season which begins on Sunday 24th September in Killarney with the Juvenile Even Age/Novice County Championships followed by the Juvenile Uneven Age/ U20/Senior on Sunday the 1st October followed by the Intermediate/Masters/ Juvenile Relays on Sunday 8th October.

KILCUMMIN CCÉ: As this is our 50th year we also have some important events upcoming. On Saturday 2nd September there is a mass for all deceased members of Kilcummin Comhaltas at 7.30pm in Kilcummin Church. DIGITAL MEDIA COURSE: Digital Media Course Kerry ETB are offering a Computer Literacy Level 3 in Kilcummin Rural Development Office, starting on Monday 11th Sept from 7pm to 9.30pm. This course is an introduction to Word Processing, email, Internet, Computer theory. It will finish end of January with progression to Spreadsheets level 3, (710pm). Places are limited. KILCUMMIN GAA FAMILY FUN DAY: We are delighted to announce that our Family Fun Day will now take place on Sunday 27th August. We will have the same schedule of events with the preliminary games of the Parish League commencing at 11am. Giant Games like Jenga and Hook a Duck, Face Painting, Colouring Corner will commence at 1pm. The Skills Competitions for our U8s, U9s, U10s and U11s will take place at 1pm. Races and Tug O’war will take place and 2pm. We will round off the day with the Final of the Parish League at 3.30pm. Food will be available on the day while our Tuck Shop will be open to purchase tea, coffee and other treats. Marie Lehane will also be present on the day should anyone wish to purchase club merchandise. It promises to be a fun-filled day for all. All are welcome and please note, it’s free entry.
