Weekly clinic at Scotts Hotel every Saturday @ 3pm. I am always contactable on 087 2461678

ARE YOU PLANNING YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAYS?

Currently in Kerry there are over 800 people waiting to have a cataract removed and the current wait time is almost 4 years

Would you like to have it removed by the end of August and have your sight restored ?

The HSE will change the reimbursement amount for a cataract removal on the 1st September 2024.

Is your passport in date? Is there someone in your family who never held a passport?

This will mean that any patient who travels after 1st September will only receive €863 as a refund compared to the current amount of €1900. So, I’m urging anyone who is considering travelling to please contact me or my office immediately, so you can travel before 31st August and get your full refund.

First time passports are currently taking 8 weeks to process so DON’T DELAY ON APPLYING

Following the HSE’s recent announcement that the reimbursement to people travelling to Belfast for a Catatact Procedure would be reduced, I raised the matter in the Dail with the Taoiseach and Minister for Health and the HSE.

They have agreed to extend the date of changes for the reimbursement until the end of August 2024.

Therefore I am advising anybody who is in need of a Cataract Procedure to book your place NOW on one of the three buses that I have arranged during the month of August.

Please contact myself or my office for full details and everything will be arranged for you.

I assure you that I will continue making strong epresentation until such time as the Government can provide a proper service for people in the Republic of Ireland. Until such time, the reimbursement needs to be reinstated to the full amount to ensure people can go to Belfast to get their sight back.

L'Etape could pave the way for Tour de France stage in Killarney

Local councillors are expressing optimism that the upcoming L'Etape Ireland event could serve as a catalyst for bringing a stage of the Tour de France to Killarney.

The L'Etape, a cycling event inspired by the Tour de France, will take place on September 7.

A emergency meeting of the Killarney Municipal District was held on Thursday morning to discuss the impact of the event as the Port Road will be closed to traffic for the duration of the event.

Several councillors expressed belief that the event could showcase Killarney's suitability as a potential host location. At the meeting councillors discussed the potential impact of the L'Etape on the town and also the possibility of attracting a future Tour de France stage.

Residents and business owners had raised concerns that the road closures for the event could have a negative impact

on the town.

Councillors called on Kerry County Council’s executive to change the current ways road closures for events are publicised. However, they also agreed L'Etape –which is endorsed by Le Tour de France organisers – could be the first step in securing a stage of the world’s biggest bike race to the town.

“The spin off from this is the possibility of

Chamber demands action on Farranfore to Killarney road

The Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has issued a strong call for immediate action on the long-awaited N22 Farranfore to Killarney project.

The Chamber has urged the Department of Transport, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and the Road Safety Authority to expedite the process of identifying the preferred route for the new road. This project has been stalled for years, with limited progress made since initial plans were drawn up in 2003.

In a statement, the Chamber outlined several key demands: Prioritization of the N22 project: The Chamber emphasised the urgent need for the project to be completed before the end of this decade.

Identification of the preferred route: A clear decision on the route corridor should be made to allow for project advancement.

Delivery of the Bohereen-Na-Goun inner relief road: This project is essential

for easing traffic congestion in the town centre.

Funding for the Killarney Bypass to Park Road link: This strategic link road will improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion.

Improvements to the Killarney Bypass: The Chamber called for the implementation of planned junctions at Lewis Road and Kilcummin.

Increased policing of congested roundabouts: Additional Garda resources are needed to manage traffic flow at busy intersections.

Creation of more parking options: To alleviate congestion caused by motorists circling the town, more parking spaces should be provided.

The Chamber's demands reflect the growing frustration among locals and businesses with the lack of progress on this vital infrastructure project. They hope that by raising awareness and exerting pressure on government agencies, they can finally see the N22 project move forward.

N22 preferred route to be revealed by end of the year

After several false starts, the preferred route corridor for the N22 between Killarney and Farranfore is expected to be announced by the end of the year.

Maps detailing the proposed route will be available for public viewing by the end of October or early November, according to Mr. Frank Hartnett, a senior roads engineer with Kerry County Council.

Mr. Hartnett attended an emergency meeting in Killarney Town Hall on Thursday morning to address the ongoing traffic congestion in the town.

He informed the meeting that the new road could be constructed in phases, with the Lissivigeen to Lawlor’s Cross section taking priority.

bringing the Tour de France to Kllarney,” said Cllr Niall Kelleher.

Cllr Brendan Cronin called for proper Garda presence at critical junctions during next week’s event.

“This is a line to the Tour de France,” he added.

Cllr John O’Donoghue said: “This is a huge event for the town, it is a precursor to the Tour de France.”

However, it was also noted that this section alone could take five years to complete, and funding remains a significant concern. As a result, the construction of the entire new road could potentially take up to ten years.

Local councillors are calling for immediate political intervention at a national level to expedite the construction of this urgently needed road.

Chronic traffic forcing locals to avoid town centre

People are deliberately avoiding Killarney town because of the chronic traffic congestion which is having a hugely negative impact on business and is leading to growing frustration, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has complained.

The organisation’s executive said traffic chaos, which appears worse this year than ever before, is now the biggest single issue for the town to contend with and it needs to be addressed as a matter of absolute priority.

Now is the opportune time to secure that commitment with a general election looming, the business organisation said.

“It has been going on far too long and it is now the ultimate Kerry joke. Motorists are encountering absolute gridlock on all the approach roads and in the town centre on a daily basis and it’s time for action,” the Chamber said.

“The chronic, daily traffic back-up in Killarney town centre and on all the approach roads has now reached crisis pro-

portions,” the Chamber added.

“It is far too simplistic to suggest that it is merely a seasonal problem and an indicator of the town’s success because that is of little consolation to those who are late for work, missing trains and buses, late for medical appointments and caught up in snarling traffic for what seems like an age”.

The town business representative body said it is very much aware and fully acknowledges that the matter has been raised time and again by the elected members and officials of Killarney Municipal District Council and Kerry County Council but repeated appeals appear to be falling on deaf ears.

Killarney for Palestine to hold vigil for Gaza's children

The Killarney for Palestine group is organising a vigil this Sunday, to honour the children of Gaza who have been tragically affected by the ongoing conflict.

The event will take place adjacent to the Courthouse at midday.

In recent months, over 16,400 children have been confirmed dead in Gaza, a figure that surpasses the total number of primary school children in County Kerry.

This devastating statistic highlights the severe impact of the conflict on the region's young population.

The vigil will include a brief walk through the town, pausing at schools along the route to reflect on the stolen lives and

dreams of Gaza's children. The group is calling on the community to show solidarity with Palestine and support their cause.

"We believe that there should be solidarity from every strata of society for Palestine," said a spokesperson for Killarney for Palestine. "We invite everyone to join us in honouring these children and raising awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza."

The group has been holding weekly vigils at the Market Cross on Thursdays at 7pm and every Sunday at the Courthouse to highlight the ongoing strife in Palestine. They have also organised several other events to raise awareness and support for the Palestinian cause.

Killarney man breaks record for climbing 275 Irish mountains

Sean Clifford, a Woodlawn native now residing in the South of France, has broken the record for running all 275 of Ireland's mountains over 600 meters, known as the Vandeleur-Lynams.

What began as a light-hearted joke with a friend to run all the mountains in County Galway quickly evolved into a monumental challenge that spanned the entire country.

Sean's remarkable achievement, completed in just 22 days, shattered the previous record of 47 days held by Dan Cooney.

Covering an impressive 880 kilometres and climbing a total elevation of 66,620 meters, Sean's journey showcased his extraordinary physical endurance and mental resilience.

He traversed Ireland's most rugged and picturesque landscapes, testing the limits of his abilities.

A passionate trail runner with a deep connection to Ireland's natural beauty, Sean's involvement with the Kerry Way Ultra further fuelled his motivation for

this ambitious undertaking. His love for the trails of Kerry and the Irish mountains drove him to conquer the Vandeleur-Lynams challenge.

"Ireland's mountains have always been close to my heart," he said. "This challenge began as a joke with a friend, but it quickly grew into something much more. Finishing in 22 days feels surreal, and I hope it inspires others to push their boundaries and explore the beauty of these mountains."

Sean's record-breaking run not only sets a new benchmark for endurance athletes but also highlights the allure of Ireland's wild and untamed mountain ranges. The Vandeleur-Lynams challenge is a testament to human perseverance and a tribute to the stunning landscapes that Ireland has to offer.

Due to an EU regulatory change regarding certain security screening equipment, the following LAGS rules will come into effect at Kerry Airport from September 1st 2024

1. Only LAGS in containers of 100ml or less can be brought through security – these can stay inside your cabin bag and there are no restrictions on the number of containers or type of LAG (provided they are not dangerous goods) – they do not have to be in a plastic bag.

2. We will accept LAGS in containers over 100ml but these must fall into the category of baby foods/milk, medicines or special dietary requirements – these must be presented at the screening point outside of your cabin bag but do not have to be in a plastic bag – they will be subject to additional screening after they have passed through the x-ray equipment.

3. All other LAGS in containers over 100ml, aside from point 2 above, will be rejected and you will be asked to surrender them at the screening point for disposal.

If you have LAGS that fall into the category of point 3 above, then please ensure they are packed into your hold baggage or else do not bring them. It’s important to note that the screening equipment itself, which is of a high quality, is not in question and also that the European Commission are not acting on any new threat information, but rather they are responding as a precautionary measure to a temporary technical issue that has been identified. We expect to resume allowing all LAGS to remain inside cabin baggage at some stage in 2025.

This year is expected to be the largest Memory Walk yet, and Castleisland native Donal Murphy, Operations Project Manager for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, is encouraging people in Kerry to register now.

The walk starts at 11am at Killarney National Park, along with walks in Tralee Town Park and Kenmare Reenagross Park. Specific meeting points within the parks will be announced soon on the Memory Walk website www.memorywalk.ie.

“I am really looking forward to this year's

Memory Walk,” said Donal Murphy. “It’s a chance to share memories and create new ones together. It’s a lovely event for everyone who attends.”

Walkers can register online for €20 (adult) or €5 (child) at www.memorywalk.ie. Registration includes a t-shirt and Forget Me Not flower seeds to plant at home as a reminder of the event.

The Alzheimer’s Memory Walk raises awareness and funds to support people living with dementia in Ireland. In 2023, over €120,000 was raised to fund vital services like daycare, family carer training, social clubs, and a national helpline. You can share your Memory Walk experience on social media using #ASIMakingMemories #ASIMemoryWalk2024 #LetsWalkTogether.

Twitter faces ban in Brazil

Elon Musk's X platform, formerly known as Twitter, is facing a potential ban in Brazil.

The dispute stems from X's handling of misinformation related to the 2022 Brazilian presidential election. The Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the platform to block certain accounts spreading false information. While X initially complied, Musk later intervened and unblocked the accounts, leading to a clash with the court. De Moraes has insisted that X appoint a legal representative in Brazil to ensure accountability and compliance with local laws.

The court has threatened to impose a daily fine and ultimately ban the platform in the country if X fails to comply.

In response, Musk has taken a defiant stance, posting unflattering AI-generated images of De Moraes. This move has further escalated tensions between the tech mogul and the Brazilian government. The potential ban in Brazil would be a significant setback for X, which has a large user base in the country. It would also raise concerns about the platform's commitment to free speech and its ability to operate in diverse markets.

Proceeds from the event were generously donated to the Knocknagoshel Over 55 Services and Scoil Íde Curranes National School.

The day began with a Cars N Coffee event at O'Riadas Bar & Restaurant Ballymacelligott, followed by a vintage car rally that attracted over 120 participants. A wide

Three generations of the Leslie family’s Ford Popular

A remarkable story of family history and automotive heritage unfolded at the recent All-Ireland Vintage Rally.

Over the years, the Ford Popular has been passed down through the generations, with Michael's son, Tom, and grandson, Pierce, becoming cherished custodians of the vehicle.

The Leslie family showcased their classic car at the All-Ireland Vintage Rally, an event hosted by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club and Trustees of Muckross House.

The rally took place on the grounds of Muckross Traditional Farms, providing a picturesque backdrop for the display of vintage vehicles.

Taylor Swift's Concert cancellations causes insurance dilemma

Insurers face millions of dollars in claims after a foiled attack forced three Taylor Swift concerts in Austria to be cancelled, though several providers will share out the hit, two people involved in insurance for her tour told Reuters.

The concerts in Vienna were cancelled in August after a planned attack at the Ernst Happel Stadium. Some 195,000 ‘Swifties' had been expected to attend, with many travelling from abroad for a chance to see the pop superstar.

Swift is popular among insurers as she

rarely cancels concerts, a third insurance source said. Her celebrity and success mean that most specialist event cancellation insurers in London would be involved in covering her tour, one of the sources said. The sources declined to be named, citing client confidentiality.

Organisers of large sporting and entertainment events typically buy event cancellation insurance, much of which tends to be insured through Lloyd’s of London.

A Lloyd’s of London spokesperson confirmed that event cancellation insurance is offered at Lloyd’s, but said it could not

comment on specific policies.

Militant attacks are often excluded from event cancellation policies, but policyholders typically buy extra cover against them, or the threat of them.

”The standalone terrorism cancellation insurance policy would have been triggered by the terrorism act or threat clause within the policy, as there has been a known potential terrorism event,” said Tim Thornhill, managing director at broker Tysers.

Swift’s Eras tour is estimated to have generated nearly $2 billion in ticket sales.

Prices predicted to continue rising

A recent survey of estate agents conducted by The Society of Chartered Surveyors (SCSI), a leading governing body for the profession, has found that agents expect property prices will continue to rise by an average of 4.5 per cent over the next 12 months.

A whopping 77 per cent of its agents believe prices are increasing but will level off soon – up from 43 per cent last year. Almost half of SCSI members believe the key factor influencing house prices over the next 12 months will be the supply of new housing.

75% of agents reported low stock levels and almost half said the lack of supply is the main driver of price inflation.

Other contributory factors influencing price movements include the economy, interest rates and the availability of credit, access to schemes supporting house purchases such as help-to-buy, and changes in the levels of immigration and emigration. The recent decision by the ECB to reduce interest rates was warmly welcomed.

A major cause of concern in the industry is the length of time it takes a sale to close and indeed an increase in the number of sales agreed but not completing Delays caused by planning irregularities, non-compliance with building regulations, delays regarding probate and accessing property deeds, are continuing to pose challenges.

The SCSI survey also indicates that, though there has been an increase in the number of buy-to-let properties coming on the market in the past six months, it has fallen “significantly” since the final months of 2023.

The ratio of owner-occupied properties to investment buy-to-let properties which agents are selling has remained unchanged at 60:40.

While agents have noticed a noticeable fall off in the number of landlords leaving the market, the number is still rising.

The three main reasons they are leaving is because rent legislation is too complex and restrictive, net rental returns are too low, and some landlords are coming out of negative equity.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Your rights when buying services

The Consumer Rights Act 2022 introduced new rights when you buy services. However, they only apply if you bought a service on or after 29 November 2022. You have different rights if you bought on or before 28 November 2022.

What is a service?

Consumer law covers many contracts for services. Examples of services covered include entertainment, accommodation, transport, building works and maintenance contracts. Personal services (for example, wedding photography), pet care services, storage facilities and legal or other professional services are also covered.

If you have a contract for a service, consumer law sets out the minimum standards that apply and the remedies if the service falls short of these standards. What should you know before you buy a service?

You have a legal right to certain information before you buy a service, including:

• The trader’s business name, address and phone number

• Details about the service (if not already clear)

• Total price, or how it will be calculated

• Length of the contract (if applicable)

• Any extra charges, for example, delivery charges

• Your right to cancel (where it applies) The information must be clear, easy to understand and given to you before you buy. You have additional rights to information if you buy online or from your doorstep.

Traders must not make claims that would distort your buying decisions. A seller who makes a false or misleading claim about a service is committing an offence and can be prosecuted. What you can expect from the service

If you have a contract for a service, consumer law sets out the minimum standards that apply to the service. Services must be in conformity with the contract you made. In conformity means the service is as you expect it would be, according to the contract you made with the trader.

Services must work as the trader said they would. They must match any advertisement and any verbal or written information you got. In addition, they must meet the terms of the contract, where the service is supplied with goods or digital elements.

The trader is obliged to:

• Provide the service in line with the

contract

• Have the required skills to carry out the service

• Supply the service with reasonable care and attention

• Only use materials that are fit for purpose and match any descriptions you got

• Charge you a reasonable price, where the price is not agreed beforehand (for example, it was based on an estimate or quote)

• Comply with all applicable laws

If a trader tells you they will provide a higher standard of care and skill than can be reasonably expected, or if they are subject to a standard set by a professional body or a code of practice, they will be held to that higher standard.

What are the options if you are not happy with the service?

If things go wrong with the service, it is always the trader who should put things right.

Under consumer law, the trader must resolve any issue, so the service meets what was agreed in the contract. The seller must correct the issue for free, within a reasonable time and without significant inconvenience to you. A reasonable time means the shortest possible time to fix the issue.

If it is not possible or too expensive for the supplier to resolve the issue, you have the right to either a price reduction or refund. If the issue is minor, you can only ask for a price reduction.

If your complaint cannot be resolved by the supplier of the service, you can make a formal complaint to the relevant trade or professional body. However, many suppliers are not members of any trade or professional body.

If you have used the service provider’s complaints procedure and the problem is still not resolved, you can use the small claims procedure (for claims less than €2,000) or take a civil case (for claims over €2,000).

Where can you get more information on what to do if you have problems with a service.

If you have a dispute with an Irishbased service supplier, you can contact the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) for advice and support. Their telephone number is (01) 402 5555 and (01) 402 5500. The CCPC can take enforcement action against a trader who fails to comply with consumer law. There is also very useful information on their website: www.ccpc.ie

Battle for seniority

Club rivals set for

KERRY SENIOR CLUB FINAL

Dr Crokes v Dingle Sunday 2pm

Austin Stack Park | Live on TG4

Only two clubs who have won the Senior Club Championship in the past ten years are currently operating at the highest level of football in the county, and those two clubs meet in the 2024 decider in Tralee on Saturday.

With Austin Stacks (winners in 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2021) and Kerins O’Rahillys (2022) now in the Intermediate Championship, Dingle and Dr Crokes are the two bona fide “big” clubs left. The West Kerry outfit are the holders and although it has been five years since the Crokes last reached a county final, the fact that they are eight-time champions doesn’t count for nothing.

mouthwatering championship final

These two teams were certainly the two favourites to advance to this year’s final and that’s how it transpired with Dingle looking particularly impressive, even if they needed a last-minute goal from Darragh O’Sullivan to overcome the challenge of Kenmare in the semi-final.

Crokes’ only defeat came at the hands of Sunday’s opponents in the group stage (a six-point loss), but Pat O’Shea’s side have improved since that opening fixture and they looked good against Rathmore a fortnight ago.

The availability or otherwise of Kerry star Tom O’Sullivan could be a decisive factor for Dingle. The stylish defender would be the obvious choice to pick up Crokes dangerman Tony Brosnan but he missed the semi-final due to injury.

At the other end of the pitch, the Killarney men will need to make special arrangements for the Geaneys. Paul, Dylan

and Conor have all been superb over the course of the competition to date, and corner forward Cathal Bambury has also impressed.

It promises to be an intriguing encounter between two senior heavyweights and a large crowd is expected in Tralee.

INTERMEDIATE

The finalists in the 2024 Intermediate Club Championship have also been confirmed following an engrossing semi-final double header at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday.

Tournament favourites Austin Stacks survived a minor scare against Glenbeigh/ Glencar, eventually doing enough to secure a 0-14 to 1-7 victory. They will be joined in the final by Laune Rangers who mounted a second half comeback to overturn a six-point deficit against Fossa. David Clifford was in sensational form for the East Kerry club,

registering a whopping 3-5 in the first half alone. He finished up with 3-8 to his name but it wasn’t enough for last year’s All-Ireland Junior champions as Eoghan Hassett (0-10) inspired Rangers to a memorable win (1-19 to 3-11).

Stacks will play Rangers in Killarney on Sunday, September 8 at 3pm.

In other Kerry GAA news, it has been confirmed that Tomás Ó Sé will carry on as U20 football manager for another year, as will minor manager Wayne Quillinan. According to Tony Leen of the Irish Examiner, former Kerry minor boss James Costello will be joining Jack O’Connor’s senior management team as a selector to help fill the void left by Mike Quirke and Diarmuid Murphy, who have both stepped away from the fold.

Meanwhile, the Kerry senior hurlers have a new manager as John ‘Tweek’ Griffin replaces the outgoing Stephen Molumphy.

160 players line out at Jerry Foley Blitz

This year’s annual Jerry Foley Memorial Blitz took place at Páirc Eammon, Farranfore last weekend with teams from Firies, Kilcummin, Milltown/Castlemaine, Currow, Ballymacelligott, Listry, Beaufort and Gneeveguilla taking part.

Approximately 160 players treated everyone in attendance to a fantastic spectacle of skill, teamwork and camaraderie. It turned out to be Kilcummin’s day as they defeated the home side, Firies, despite gallant effort by the hosts who gave it all but fell short against a very strong Kilcummin side. Both of Jerry’s grandsons lined out with Firies on the day.

Congratulations to Kilcummin with notable mention to Player of the Tournament Dylan McCarthy.

Great days like this do not happen automatically and speaking on behalf of the family Neil Brendan Foley, Jerry’s son, thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the event.

“It is the epitome of the GAA when so many people are willing to give of their time for the benefit of the young players,” Neil Brendan said. “In its 28th year running, it is an incredible illustration of how our dad, Jerry, is commemorated and on behalf of the Foley family we are very grateful and glad that this blitz bearing his name is still taking place.”

FINALISTS: The host team, Firies, who were runners-up at the Jerry Foley Memorial Blitz.
WINNERS: The Kilcummin team who won the Jerry Foley Memorial Blitz at Firies GAA grounds.
BEAUFORT: Players and mentors from Beaufort GAA Club at Páirc Eamonn for the Jerry Foley Memorial Blitz.
FUN TIMES: The Gneeveguilla squad enjoyed their matches at the blitz.
BLITZ: The Listry GAA side who travelled to Farranfore for the annual competition.

Eamonn Fitzgerald previews the 2024 Paralympic Games, which get underway in Paris this week

The 2024 Olympics in Paris shone brightly for the Irish team of 134 athletes participating across various sports. All were Olympians and that is memorable when you think of the personal sacrifices involved in reaching Olympic qualification standards. Ireland performed admirably, securing seven medals (four gold and three bronze). So that’s it for another four years, the Olympics are all over. Not so. The Paralympics began on Wednesday in Paris and will continue until September 28. While the memories of the able-bodied Irish athletes continue, let’s not forget the Irish team competing in Paris over the next week or so, those athletes who have had to overcome huge disadvantages not just in sport but in their adopted and adapted lives. 4,000 athletes from 160 countries will be bidding for 549 medals across 22 events. Let us get behind those wearing the Irish singlets and cheer them all on. Winning a medal of any colour will be a bonus. In truth, they are all winners. Team Ireland abú.

TALENT

The Paralympics have grown to become one of the world's largest and most celebrated sporting events, showcasing the resilience, determination, and talent of athletes with disabilities.

The 2024 Paralympics will be hosted in Paris, marking the first time the French capital has held the event. Paris previously hosted the Olympics in 1900 and 1924, but this will be the first Paralympics held there. The city has made significant efforts to ensure that the 2024 Games are inclusive, accessible, and inspiring for both athletes and spectators alike. The venues for the games will be spread across the city. By the time you get to read this column, the opening ceremony will have taken place on the splendid Champs-Élysées and Place de la Concorde, creating a truly unique and memorable start to the event.

The Paris Paralympics will also be historic in its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The organisers have pledged to reduce the carbon footprint of the Games by 50% compared to previous editions, with a focus on using existing venues and infrastructure. Additionally, the Paris Games will see a significant emphasis on gender equality with equal numbers of male and female athletes participating, and a balanced number of events for men and women.

IRELAND’S HISTORY

Ireland has a proud history in the Paralympics, dating back to the inaugural Games in Rome in 1960, when the nation won its first medals. Since then, Irish athletes have consistently performed well, winning a total of 123 medals, including 31 golds. Ireland's success has spanned multiple sports with particularly strong performances in athletics, swimming, and cycling.

One of the stars of Irish Paralympic history is swimmer Darragh McDonald who won gold in the 400m freestyle at the 2012 London Games and silver in the same event at Beijing 2008. Another standout athlete is Jason Smyth, often referred to as the fastest Paralympian on the planet. Smyth, who is visually impaired, dominated the T13 sprints throughout his career, winning gold in both the 100m and 200m at every Paralympics since 2008. His consistency and speed made him a household name, not just in Ireland, but globally. Ireland’s achievements in cycling are also notable with athletes like Mark Rohan, who won two gold medals in hand cycling at the 2012 London Paralympics, and Katie-George Dunlevy, who, alongside her pilot Eve McCrystal, secured two golds and a silver at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

AMHRÁN NA BHFIANN

There is a sense of optimism and excitement surrounding this Irish team. The nation will be represented by a mix of seasoned Paralympians and promising newcomers, all of whom are eager to leave their mark on the global stage. Won’t it be special if we hear Amhrán na bhFiann as the tricolour rises to mark a golden moment?

A standout Irish athlete is Nicole Turner, a swimmer who made her Paralympic debut at the age of 14 in Rio 2016. Turner, who has a condition called hypochondroplasia, competes in the S6 classification and has already secured a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics in the 50m butterfly. Turner’s dedication and drive have seen her improve consistently, and she will be aiming for gold in Paris. In cycling, Katie-George Dunlevy and her pilot Eve McCrystal are returning as one of Ireland's strongest medal contenders. The duo has a proven track record, having won multiple medals across the last two Paralympics. Dunlevy, who is visually impaired, has found incredible success with McCrystal, a former national

cycling champion, as her pilot. Their synchronization, trust and teamwork have been key to their success, and they will be aiming to replicate their past performances in Paris. Think about what they have to overcome - so much more than the thousands heading up to Coomakista in the annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Wheelchair racer Patrick Monahan is another athlete to watch. Monahan competes in the T53 category and has represented Ireland in marathons around the world, including the Paralympics. His endurance and strategic racing have earned him a place among the world’s best, and he will be looking to make a significant impact in Paris.

RISING STARS

While the veterans bring experience, the 2024 team will also feature several newcomers who have shown great promise in their respective sports. Look out for some new stars in the making. Shotputter Mary Fitzgerald competes in the F40 classification. She has been steadily improving her performance on the international stage and is seen as a strong contender for a medal in Paris. No relation to this writer, by the way.

Another rising star is Róisín Ní Ríain, a visually impaired swimmer who competed in her first Paralympics in To-

kyo at just 16 years of age. Róisín delivered impressive performances, reaching multiple finals, and she will be looking to build on that experience in Paris. The road to Paris 2024 has been marked by intense preparation and challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the usual training routines and qualification events, but Irish athletes have adapted remarkably well. The Paralympic Federation of Ireland has provided support through virtual training sessions and mental health resources, and by ensuring that athletes have access to the necessary facilities and equipment.

Funding has always been a critical issue for Paralympic sports, and the Irish gov-

Paralympic stars

ernment, along with various sponsors, have stepped up to provide increased financial support for the athletes' preparations. This funding is crucial for training camps, international competitions and the development of young athletes who are the future of Irish Paralympic sports.

The Paralympics are more than just a sporting event; they are a powerful platform for raising awareness about disability, promoting inclusion and challenging perceptions. The success of Irish Paralympians has had a profound impact on society, inspiring countless individuals and highlighting the importance of accessibility and equal opportunities in sports. In Ireland, Paralympians are celebrated not just for their athletic achievements, but for their role in advancing the conversation around disability rights and inclusion. Their stories of overcoming adversity resonate with people from all walks of life, and their successes on the global stage bring immense pride to the nation.

The journey to Paris has been challenging but the Irish Paralympians are ready to take on the world, aiming to bring home medals and inspire a new generation of athletes.

The local Kerry Stars may yet produce some Paralympians and earlier this week I was delighted to meet someone closely involved in the new shared facility at Bally-

dribbeen. Hats off to the many helpers and coaches who have developed the sporting pursuits of so many Kerry Stars athletes over many years.

JORDAN LEE

Spare a thought for the great Jordan Lee from Killarney Valley Athletics Club whom we have seen clearing the high jump with consummate ease at the athletics facility

near St Brendan’s College on the New Road.

In his teens, he was the first one-handed player in the world to represent his country when he played for Ireland at the age 15.

He switched to the high jump and is coached by Tomás Griffin (Bishop Moynihan Crescent), himself a notable former sprinter and long jumper. Jordan competed in an Irish athletics vest in 2017 after just four months of training for the high jump and, within a year, he had won a bronze medal at the 2018 European Championships.

His personal best of 1.95m dates from the Irish National Championships (able-bodied) in 2019 and the European record in his event was 1.97m so he is not far off it. He is also one of very few Para Athletes to have won a National Championship in able-bodied competition.

He was the flag-bearer leading Team Ireland out into the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo and he had high hopes for Paris, but injury, the bugbear of all sportspeople, left him with no choice but to pull out of the games in Paris.

Typical of the man, he says he will bounce back for the next Paralympics in four years’ time. Now that is heroism at its best in the true Olympic spirit. Similarly, our Irish Team will focus on ability over disability.

Let’s get behind these stars - and they are all stars. Let’s hope RTÉ will provide decent coverage. The athletes deserve it, and so do we.

St Paul’s golf classic a swinging success

St Paul’s Basketball Club staged another hugely successful golf classic on Saturday last as sunshine and a fresh westerly breeze greeted the early starters in Beaufort.

Cllr Niall O’Callaghan fired off the first drive at 8.40am and by evening time over 30 teams had negotiated their way around the long but pristine track. When all the calculations were complete it was the Gallivan Murphy Insurance Brokers (GMIB) team of Tina O’Sullivan, Sinéad O’Shea, Sinéad Lynch and Lelia Moloney who displayed great course management and no little skill to find themselves in the winners enclosure. They had to be at their very best as another all-female combination chased them all the way home. Aileen Curtayne and her team played wonderfully well and ultimately secured the silver medal. Jim Delaney assembled a crack squad of Anthony O’Carroll, Donal Carroll and Ryan Kavanagh and they were the final group home, capturing third place. The Tony O’Sullivan-led Kerry Agri Business Store are never far away from a podium finish, and they dovetailed well to grab fourth place.

Flesk Valley youngsters row their hearts out

Flesk Valley had a brilliant weekend at the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships in Dingle on August 24th and 25th.

The conditions were challenging at times, especially for the younger rowers, and the club are immensely proud of all those who wore the Valley blue at the weekend, rowing their hearts out. Flesk Valley had plenty of success on the medal table, too, with gold for the U14 boys, U21 ladies, U16 mixed and U18 mixed; silver for the U12 girls, U21 Men, and U21 Ladies; and bronze for the U12 boys and U18 mixed. Notable mentions also for the U12 beginners, U14 girls and U16 girls who rowed very well across the weekend, qualifying for their respective finals.

In total Flesk Valley had almost 90 rowers on the water at the weekend, and they were vocally supported by parents,

grandparents and siblings who travelled in great numbers to Dingle over two long days. The club are very grateful to everyone who came to support their rowers and shout on the Valley. Gratitude was also expressed to Ger Sweeney who towed the boats to and from Dingle and spent two days catching and loading boats on the pontoon in all four seasons.

This was the culmination of a long year of rowing on the Valley shore and the club would like to thank all the coaches and coxes who put so much time and effort into the club on the water or in the background organising and helping out in all sorts of ways, especially Paul Burke, Saoirse Sweeney, Colm O’Suillebháin, Breeda O’Sullivan, John Fleming, Alison O’Sullivan, Jillian O’Neill, Caoimhe Kelly, Leah Burke, Tadhg Kelly and Donal Kelly.

ing second hole to secure Nearest the Pin while Paudie Kerins was like a radar on the fourth to pilfer that prize.

Afterwards, the club expressed their gratitude to everyone who took part in the golf classic, as well as those who sponsored a team or a tee box. Special thanks was also given to Tadgh Clifford and the greenkeeping team at Beaufort Golf Club who had the course in immaculate shape despite the unpredictable weather, and to Helen and the staff in the clubhouse who made sure everyone got fed and watered.

Finally, this event would not be the success it was without the work of the organising committee, namely Seán Brosnan, Joe Sheehan, Maurice O’Donoghue, Jim Delaney, John Carroll and Tom Looney.

RESULTS: 1st GMIB (Tina O’Sullivan, Sinéad O’Shea, Sinéad Lynch, Lelia Moloney). 2nd Bunkers Bar (Aileen Curtayne, Deirdre Galvin, C Doyle, A Walker). 3rd Senator Windows (Jim Delaney, Anthony O’Carroll, Donie Carroll, Ryan Kavanagh). 4th Kerry Agri Business Store (Tony O’Sullivan, Kieran McCarthy, Brendan Nagle, Mike Fitzgerald). Nearest the Pin - 2nd Lorcan King, 4th Paudie Kerins.

Lakers sign Mikah Blackwell

Mikah Blackwell has signed for Scotts Lakers St Paul’s for the 2024/2025 National League season.

Blackwell, a native of Norfolk in Virginia, is a graduate of the Arizona Christian University. He helped the ACU Firestorm reach the quarter-finals of the NAIA National Tournament and win their third straight regular season GSAC Championship in 2022/23. Mikah was named the GSAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year for his efforts.

Standing at 6’6”, his all-round game can see him play both inside and outside with his athleticism being his strong point. His contribution at the defensive end is highlighted by his innate blocking ability and his frequent double-digit rebounding stats.

St Paul’s supporters of a certain generation may recall Terry Smith in his pomp and comparisons may well be drawn with the mesmeric American, given Blackwell’s agility around the rim.

He will join fellow new signing Patrick Lanipekun and new Head Coach Ron Howard as the Lakers plan for their opening league game on the first weekend of October.

RESULT: Keane’s Jewellers Munster Champions Trophy - Ringmahon Rangers 0 Killarney Celtic 1 (Wayne Sparling). Killarney Celtic A opened their competitive season with a win away to Ringmahon Rangers Junior Premier side. The 1st half was even with neither team creating many clear-cut chances. Roy Kelliher had to be alert to snuff out a through ball and Celtic also used up some good fortune after a mix up at the back. The 2nd half continued in the same vein until Ringmahon almost hit the front. Good work by Kalem Cashman down the right led to a pull back from the end line which resulted in Ringmahon hitting the crossbar. Celtic made the most of this let off and on 62 mins after good interplay on the left between Wayne Sparling and Nattagan Ryan, a shot from Wayne Sparling ended up in the net. Celtic were unlucky not to extend their lead when Stephen McCarthy almost scored after he intercepted a back pass and Sean Lovett was denied on the follow up. Celtic continued to be dangerous on the break with Matt Keane and Wayne Sparling having openings to add to the score. Ringmahon came forward with purpose in the closing minutes but Celtic defended stoutly. Celtic broke forward in the closing minutes of injury time and showed their experience at this level by controlling the ball in the Ringmahon half and thus qualified for a semi-final away to Grattan Utd of the Cork AUL.

FAMILY OPEN DAY: The Saturday Morning Academy is hosting an open day for all families on Saturday September 7th. Boys and girls, aged 3-11, are all invited to the event, which takes place in the club grounds in Direen, and will feature bouncy castles, face painting and other fun activities. The good news is admission is free and snacks and drinks will be provided as well as Club wristbands. New people are encouraged to call up and meet the coaches, team members and learn more about the club and what it has to offer. More information can be gathered from Derek Pyne 089 2299769 and Justin Healy at 086 3684108. The Academy itself returns itself on this Saturday August 31st.

SENIOR LADIES: Fresh off the back of the Corrib Oil Senior Club league title, the senior ladies commences their Bon Secours Junior B Championship at home in a rematch with John Mitchels, who they had defeated just five days earlier to capture that league crown. Another tough battle was anticipated and so it ensued. The sides went in at the break level, the Tralee side hitting two goals, the first a rather fortuitous effort and the second one a penalty. The Ladies got their radar working early to slot over seven points in the opening half and it was anyone’s to play for in the second half. It looked like Mitchels were going to avenge that league defeat when they grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, hitting five points without reply in the third quarter. But the ladies didn’t panic and clawed their way back into the game with a very productive finale, getting some well worked scores and displaying great accuracy from placed balls. The final scoreline read 0-16 to 2-08 in their favour and next they head along the west road to face Dingle on Monday of this week, the 26th August at 7.15pm. Kilcummin lie in wait in the final group game, which will be played in Direen on Monday September 2nd.

MOTHERS AND OTHERS: Our Mothers and Others troop are busy as usual, hosting Laune Rangers during the week for a bit of fun. It's the latest in a series of games they will be partaking in and it's never too late to join their crew. They meet Wednesday nights between 8-9pm in Direen and when all the football is done they are equally adept at having a cuppa and a chat. Social football with a twist at its best.

U13 BOYS: Kilcummin were the visitors to Direen last Tuesday in phase of the East Kerry League Division 1. They started the game strong and led by 2-8 to 1-4 at half time. Extending the lead to eleven points things looked ominous but credit to our boys they battled hard to close the gap to just five, 3-13 to 3-8 by full time. While defeat was their lot, there was loads of positives to be gleaned from the performance. Later in the week they met a strong Firies, but some importantly

timed goals saw the Farranfore side pull through. Nonetheless they have qualified for the semi-finals which will take place this weekend. Also through to the semi-finals are the second team who secured a 1-14 to 0-8 over the same opposition. That game also takes place on Sunday.

U17 BOYS: Our Minors finished the County Minor Championship with a tough trip to Tralee to play the County Club Champions Austin Stacks in the John Mitchels complex on Monday evening last. The lads started well and scores were evenly shared in the first quarter. Stacks, gaining momentum, hit a purple patch in the last five minutes of the first half to lead at the interval by four points, 0-9 to 0-5. An early goal and some nice scores from play saw the Tralee side cruise into a lead and they netted two further times as a younger smaller Legion side battled with their power, pace and physicality. Our boys raised 5 white flags in that second half and never gave up. Thanks to the ref on an excellent game and to the Stacks players and management for a game played in an excellent spirit. Final Score Austin Stacks 3-16 Killarney Legion 0-10.

U14 GIRLS: Plenty of drama on a windy Sunday evening for our U14 girls in Glenbeigh against Cromane. In Round 2 of the East Kerry League. Playing against the elements in the opening half they stayed well in touch, trailing by only four at half time, 2-2 to 0-4. But the Mid Kerry side drove on in the third quarter doubling that advantage which left them with plenty work to do. But they rolled up their sleeves, increased the tempo, kicking some great scores and put in a storming fourth quarter to win out by two points in a breathless game. Final score Killarney Legion 2-13 Cromane 5-2.

U16 GIRLS: Well done to our fantastic U16 Girls who put up a fabulous display to kick 3-11 against the mighty Castleisland Desmonds in the final of the U16 Division 1 County League Final. Alas, Desmond’s kicked 4-15 on the night and took away the win. In a game of two halves played in terrible conditions the football played by both teams was of the highest quality. After a slow start Fossa found themselves chasing shadows and with the positive running of Desmond’s they were well down by 10 points at half time. The girls really rallied in the 2nd half and for a fleeting moment it really still looked possible but in the end it was just too much to do. Well done to all 19 players young and old who played their part in a tough campaign that brought our very small club to an U16 Division 1 Final, we played against the biggest and the very best in the County. They always play their hardest and gave all that they had, they are great and a credit to the club, their parents and themselves.

SENIOR LADIES: Well done to the Fossa Senior Ladies who got off to a winning start at home in the 1st round of the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee Junior County Championship against Inbhear Scéine Gaels Ladies Football Club. After a blistering start they never looked like giving up the lead and went in at the break 1-10 to 1-02 up. While ISG competed hard, a solid 2nd half Fossa display followed and at the final whistle the girls ran out strong winners on a score line of 2-15 v 1-06.

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Fossa’s Intermediate championship aspirations came to an end in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday afternoon at the hands of Laune Rangers. The game started in whirlwind fashion, Rangers opened the scoring in first minute but immediately, David Clifford does what he’s best at and crashed home a fabulous goal to get Fossa on the board. Rangers were level by the 5th minute, but two Emmett O’Shea points and another David Clifford point put Fossa three ahead by the 11th minute. A slick passing move by Rangers resulted in their midfielder, Tom Whittleton rattling the Fossa net to leave the sides all square. Once again, the hard-working

Paudie Clifford found David who scored his second goal of the day, however Rangers wouldn’t go away and pulled back three unanswered points. Fossa did have a period of dominance and went ahead with scores from Harry Buckley and a monster point from David Clifford, in the 25th minute Fossa were awarded a penalty which David duly completed his hat trick with to leave the half time score Fossa 3-08, Laune Rangers 1-08. Perhaps the warning signals were there in that Laune Rangers had put up a respectable score playing into a very strong wind in the first half, they came out and attacked hard from the off and they really punished every mistake. They had levelled matters by the 13th minute and were two points ahead before David Clifford got Fossa’s second score of the half from a free in the 24th minute, Fossa tried really hard but playing into the elements, they struggled to get out of their own half. Rangers kept the score board ticking and with Fossa pushing hard for a goal, Paudie Clifford was unlucky with a flick that came back off the crossbar. It ended with a twopoint win for Laune Rangers on a score of 3-11 to 1-19. It just wasn’t to be, but this Fossa team have given us some memorable days out over the past two years, they can be very proud of their efforts and deserve a rest after a long time on the road.

Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club

NATIONAL U16 CHAMPIONSHIPS: It takes something special for us not to start with the Ricky Kelly but the achievements of the Kerry U16 ‘Gold’ team along with Ben Kelliher and Brian McCarthy at Hillview in Clonmel last Saturday deserve their due recognition. Ben and Brian found themselves locked in a four-player playoff with Gowran duo Jack McShane and Harry Concannon for the U16 Boys titles after all four finished on six under par. It was still level between three of them after the extra nine holes but as Ben went to the 10th tee-box with Brian and McShane he birdied the hole to join Creagh Courtney and Conor McCarthy as the club’s only winners of the Eugene McCarthy Cup. Brian finished second for the second straight year on countback from McShane as both Ben and Brian combined later with Listowel duo Ajay Barrett and Jayden Chute to win Kerry’s fifth straight title in the Inter-County event as part of the ‘Gold’ Team. Fionn McMonagle and Aodhan O’Halloran finished just behind Concannon in the battle for the U13 prize, but we just want to say a well done to all concerned on their

performances and thank our U16 Officers Gearoid Cronin and Derry McCarthy for looking after the players on the day.

RICKY KELLY: Despite the murky weather we had another great staging of this event last weekend as we thank all those who contributed to its success once more. Our thanks to our sponsors the Tatler Jack Bar on their continued support as we acknowledge all those who helped out on the course, those who helped with the bar and the barbeque, Meitheal and Jackie O’Mahony for entertaining everyone on Sunday night as we were delighted to make a special presentation to Michael F O’Connor for his outstanding services to the maintenance of our course down through the years. There was a family win for the Kelly’s to celebrate this year by only by a margin of one-third of a shot!
