Killarney links to Ireland’s oldest person who passed away this week

Ireland’s oldest person, Máirín Hughes, has died at the age of 109

Máirín Hughes, who turned 109 on May 22, has strong Killarney connections. The previous record was held by 107-year-old Nancy Stewart who died on September 10 2021.

Although born in Belfast, Máirín went to school in the Mercy Convent. Her father was a customs and excise officer and the family moved around a lot eventually coming to Killarney after spells in County Down and Dublin.

Her mother came from the Rathmore area and her father was from Newmarket in County Cork.

She attended the Mercy Convent and has, in previous interviews, recalled growing up on the shores of Lough Lein. In 2021 she featured in the book ‘Independence Memories: A People’s Portrait of the Early Days of the Irish Nation’, shar-

ing stories of being kept in school in Killarney during an attack on the RIC barracks down the road.

In 1924 she started a degree in science and a diploma in education at University College Cork, before working in the pathology lab in University College Cork’s Department of Medicine for 16 years. Last year she recalled her story on the podcast: ‘Living History - Irish Life and Lore’.

During the broadcast she talked about her parents' membership of the Gaelic League in 1910; the Spanish Flu in Ireland in 1918; The Black and Tans in Killarney in 1921; the early days of the new Free State; Eucharistic Congress in Dublin in 1932, visiting the Basket Islands in 1929; and working in the UCC medical laboratory from 1932 until 1948.

Michael Fassbender’s latest movie premieres in Toronto

Michael Fassbender‘s latest movie ‘Next Goal Wins’ will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend.

“Directed by Academy Award Winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok), ‘Next Goal Wins’ follows the American Samoa soccer team, infamous for their brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001,” said a press release issued by the production company.

“With the World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-hisluck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen (Fassbender) hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around in this heartfelt underdog comedy.”

NPWS issues fire warning ahead of weekend heatwave

The National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) has appealed to members of the public to be conscious of the dangers posed by fire and to exercise extreme caution over this high risk period.

Rivals Clifford and O’Hora join forces for Kerry Mental Health

Breakfast takes place in The Great Southern Killarney on October 6. The Kerry captain and his on-field marker from Mayo will be part of an expert panel discussion on the importance of staying connected in our communities and how to look after our mental wellbeing.

Pádraig O’Hora is a Youth Justice Worker with Youth Work Ireland, and Community Liaison Officer with Mayo Mental Health Association. Key insights will be provided by two members of the Kerry Mental Health Association Board, Dr. Caitriona Kelly, Lecturer Department of Nursing and Healthcare Sciences at MTU Kerry and Samantha Keane who works as an engineer.

“Our vision is to ensure that society is better informed about how to take care of its mental health. This fundraising business breakfast will help us provide the educational infrastructure necessary to achieve that goal,” said The General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey.

“We want to open a conversation to remind us all how important being part of a community is. We believe this

can have a positive impact on mental health through social connection in business, sport and wider community activities.

“Kerry Mental Health Association is proud to bring together four key roles models in David Clifford, Pádraig O’Hora, Dr. Caitríona Kelly and Samantha Keane and we are grateful to them for giving their time to take part in the event.

Community college goes phone free in classroom

The Killarney Community College have introduced new measures in order to reduce online bullying and general distraction within the classroom by asking their students to voluntarily hand up their phones to their teachers at the beginning of every class.

The initiative comes in the wake of new data published this week reporting worrying online trends faced by school goers. CyberSafeKids, an Irish online safety charity, carried out research for it's annual trends and usage report and were able to include secondary school data for the first time.

98% of all 12-16 year olds now own a mobile phone with up to 40% of secondary school goers reporting being cyber bullied with girls overall being the most likely victims. Almost two thirds of teachers have reported dealing with online safety incidents. The survey also showed many students reported being unaware of how to best protect themselves online.

Feedback from the student council has been overwhelmingly positive as students noted that notifications and the temptation to look at their phone are now a thing of the past thus maximising teaching and learning in their classes. Principal Stella Loughnane has already noted the positive impact it is having on the school.

"In recent years I've found myself dealing with more and more online issues that have spilled over to the classroom. Incidents of Cyber bullying are worrying and clearly on the rise. Every student has a right to feel safe in school and learn in a distraction free environment,” she said. “Our teaching staff have noted the ease to which our students have taken to handing up their phones and have noticed a greater focus and improved levels of concentration within the classroom. Students are still free to use their phones at lunch time but we are definitely seeing the benefits of less screen time for our students.”

Dr Crokes’ Healthy Club has embarked on an initiative in conjunction with Order of Malta Killarney Unit to provide certified training for its members as Cardiac First Responders. Around 10,000 people die of heart related failure and strokes in Ireland each year. Early intervention by Cardiac First Responders can save people’s lives.

Accountancy firm celebrates 50 years in business

Killarney firm Orchid Accountants celebrated 50 years in business at the weekend.

From humble beginnings, Donal A Culloty & Co started in the front room of the family home on Lewis Rd in 1973 before becoming one of Kerry's top accountancy firms.

At a special gathering at the Mad Monk last Friday, Michael Culloty, son of the founder, explained why Orchid Accountants is special.

“It is because of our clients, some of whom have been with the firm since the beginning, and the staff who each bring their unique backgrounds, perspectives and ideas,” he said.

ANAM Arts centre to host Culture Night events

The ANAM Arts and Culture centre on East Avenue is one of the key venues for the county-wide Culture night celebration.

Culture Night - an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity, and the arts – will take place September 22.

Special events are programmed at participating locations throughout the County, and, thanks to the continued support of the Arts Council and Kerry County Council, all activities are free of charge.

One such event will take place in Anam and will give people of all ages a chance to get in touch with their creative side. Music Generation Kerry will host children workshops with unusual instru-

ments followed by an evening painting workshop for adults facilitated by Arthouse Killarney.

Algae warning on Lough Leane

The unseasonably warm weather has led to an increase in algal growth at a number of locations around Lough Leane in Killarney.

Kerry County Council is advising members of the public not to bathe or paddle in water if there are visible signs of algal growth in the vicinity which can be identified by a green, blue or brown colour in the water or along the shoreline.

They are also advised to ensure that they keep their dogs under control as such algal accumulations can be harmful if

ingested by small animals, particularly dogs. In addition, water from the lake should not be used for cooking, drinking or washing.

Advisory signage has been erected at a number of locations on the lake shoreline.

“The situation is being monitored closely on an ongoing basis by Kerry County Council, particularly during the current spell of warm weather and conditions in which this phenomenon is known to occur,” said council spokesperson.

Biosphere conference in Killarney House

The Kerry UNESCO Biosphere Reserve will host its Autumnal Series Biodiversity Conference in Killarney House between 12pm and 4pm on Saturday.

The conference will be a celebration of the local natural biosphere heritage and will provide a fascinating insight into the natural world.

The strong panel of speakers include Éanna Ní Lamhna and Anja Murray.

Éanna is the president of the Tree Council of Ireland, biologist, broadcaster, and author of popular environmental books including ‘Wild and Wonderful’ and ‘Our Wild World’. Anja is an ecologist and broadcaster who has previously presented on RTE 1’s ‘Eco Eye’. Anja is also the author of the book ‘Wild Embrace’ which celebrates Ireland’s natural heritage. They will be joined by Dr Therese Higgins from the Munster Technological University to discuss

native Irish woodland habitats.

Dr Barry O’Donoghue from the National Parks and Wildlife Service Agri-ecology unit will present a discussion on ‘talmhaíocht’ which examines the relationship between farming and nature in modern Ireland.

This is a free event hosted by the Kerry UNESCO Biosphere Reserve supported by Kerry County Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund.

Strong performances by KCC members on Charleville two-day

The 23rd edition of the Charleville Two-Day Road race took place in Cork last Saturday and Sunday, with a strong field for the last stage race of the year.

Killarney Cycling Club had Frank Doherty, John Blackwell, Luke Costelloe, Milo Donaldson and Shane Spellman lining out in the A2/A3/Junior race and Pierce Curtin taking to the start of the A3/Masters/A4 race.

Costelloe and Doherty were fortunate to slip through a late crash on Stage One to contest the bunch sprint and finished fourth and sixth respectively.

Luke continued his strong form, after recent participation in the Junior Tour of Wales, to make the winning break of Stage 3, to finish 11th on the stage and the General Classification for the weekend.

In his first season of racing with Killarney Cycling Club, Pierce Curtin has

shown to be a natural, finishing eighth on the opening stage and second on the third test to secure fourth overall in the General Classification in the A3/Masters/A4 race.

Round four of the Vitus Gravity Enduro Series continued in Carrick, County Wicklow last weekend. Jason Murphy took second in the Men’s Masters, with Patrick Cremin also securing a spot on the podium, finishing P3 in the Men’s Seniors.

Paddy Moore and Tom Costelloe kept up the fight going in what has been a long season, full of progress and finished 11th and 17th respectively in the Men’s Under 17s.

Toastmaster ready for new season

Killarney Toastmasters 2023/24 season gets underway on Tuesday next.

The group will met at the Dromhall Hotel at 8pm and going forward every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at the same place.

Toastmasters is an international organisation which strives to help people of all ages gain confidence in a positive and

non-judgemental environment.

The core values of the organisation are respect, integrity, service and excellence and members can develop leadership and diplomacy skills while also overcoming the nerves of speaking in front of other people.

Killarney Community First Responders has launched its annual art competition with local primary schools. The programme raises awareness of CPR through art. Last year 16 schools across the locality entered the competition.

Shock and sadness at the passing of Brendan Conway

The classic car community is mourning the sudden loss of Brendan Conway who passed away suddenly this week.

Brendan was ever-present at every classic car event in the locality.

His pride and joy was his Ford Escort Mk1 in period Shell livery. Brendan and the Escort attended almost every car show and road run in the county and he was a popular among classic car enthusiasts. He was a member of the Kingdom Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club.

In a social media post the club said: “Very sad news about the passing of our good friend Brendan, a long-time member of the club and always a great supporter of classic car events. One of nature's gentleman and he will be missed. Our condolences to his family.”

He was also a great supporter of local motorsport and took great pride in his son Ger’s achievements locally, nationally and internationally.

Ger’s most recent win came on the Kerry Winter Rally last October.

Brendan was one of the first people at the finish ramp outside the Banna Beach Hotel to offer his congratulations to Ger and his driver Richard Moffett.

Brendan recently retired from the Liebherr Container Cranes Factory in Fossa. Brendan will be sadly missed by his wife

Ballydribben mural unveiled by Mayor

The Mayor of Killarney Brendan Cronin and Cllr. Martin O’Grady officially unveiled the new mural in Ballydribeen last week.

The mural was painted by Artist Deborah O'Keeffe.

Matthew Farrell, Municipal District Officer with Kerry County Council was also in attendance along with members of the Ballydribeen Residents Association who were involved in accessing funding from Creative Ireland Kerry and The Community Sports Fund for this Project.

The committee behind the project included Liam Grimes, Suzanne Blenner-

hassett, Jim O’Donoghue and Rayla Tadjimatova.

“Huge thanks also to Jannie Prins who worked on all the administration work and TUS for assisting in preparing the wall for the Artist. Deborah did a wonderful job and encouraged the children in the area to get involved, which they were delighted with,” said committee member Suzanne Blennerhasset.

“All in Ballydribeen are very proud of the work and it has transformed the space, reflecting life in the Deenagh River. “Thanks to all parents and children who took part and all the volunteers who helped out.”

Mary, daughter Marion and son Gerard, his son-in-law Declan, daughter-in-law Ciara, his adored grandchildren Aodhán, Bláthnaid, Muiris, Séamus, Róisín, Brian, Ollie and Ada, sisters Kathleen, Patricia and Bernadette, aunt Kitty, brothersin-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and many friends. His funeral mass will take place on Saturday morning at 11am at the Church of The Immaculate Conception, Listry.

Jack's back for another crack

Jack O’Connor has been ratified as the Kerry Senior Football Manager for another two-year term.

O’Connor re-joined the fray last year, leading Kerry to the 2022 All Ireland title and a narrow defeat to Dublin in this year’s contest.

His ratification was confirmed at Monday night Kerry GAA county board meeting and he will confirm his backroom team in due course.

Stephen Molumphy was also ratified as the Kerry Senior Hurling Manager for a one-year term.

Over 300 people have already committed to the Lily Daly Challenge

Lily’s Pink Challenge is shaping up to be a very exciting day with well over 300 participants already signed up from all around Kerry and across Ireland.

The fundraiser kicks off on September 16 at Killarney Racecourse.

The Lily Daly Foundation’s primary mission and purpose is to support children and their parents when in hospital with heart related issues. Lily Daly was born in 21 June 2019 and suffered from Pulmonary Vein Stenosis, a very rare condition affecting the heart and surrounding arteries. Unfortunately, after frequent visits to Crumlin, major heart surgery in both Crumlin and the Presbyterian Hospital in New York, Lily passed away on the 26 February 2021. Support for the Lily Daly Foundation has been phenomenal with growing numbers signing up daily to take on Lily’s Pink challenge, be that the 60km cycle through the Gap of Dunloe or the 10km run/walk around Ross Castle and Killarney National Park.

In addition, many individuals, families and companies have also made donations on the Lily Daly Foundation web site. All proceeds go towardsthe Heart Centre in Crumlin Children’s Hospital andthe Ronald McDonald house in Dublin.

All participants, volunteers, families and friends are also invited to enjoy Link’s Pink Party after the event also at the racecourse, which includes music

Bell choir from Colorado to perform free concert on Saturday night

A unique concert is set to take place at St Oliver’s National School on Saturday night.

A bell choir - from The Bells of Vista Grande - Colorado Springs, will visit the school on invitation from the local Grace Baptist Church.

“They will be performing a concert Saturday night, September 9 at 730pm. This is free to the public. All are welcome. The concert is called ‘Freedom, A Celebration of Music and Life’. They will be playing a selection of music ranging from classical, sacred, modern musical theatre, and Irish hymns, old and new,” said local organiser Mark Webb.

Adventurers brave the Kerry Way

The Kerry Way Ultra Marathon, a 200km endurance race, a daunting 40 hour, 200km, non-stop race, which traverses the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and Iveragh Peninsula took place last weekend.

The Kerry Way/Slí Uibh Ráthach is one of

Ireland’s longest established recreational walking trails. It consists of over 220 kilometres of old highway and ancient paths, sea scapes and butter road. This was the 11th edition of the legendary race.

Over 100 people attend ‘Pop Up Gaeltacht’

Over 100 people attended the third ‘Pop Up Gaeltacht’ in Teddy O'Connor's bar last week.

Based on previous events, where numbers have been steadily increasing, organiser James Knoblauch has decided to go ahead with a third meeting. At the first Pop Up, they had about 30 in

attendance. At the second one, around 50 turned up.

This increased to 100 at the third attempt, and guests included local MEP Sean Kelly.

There was a great mix of all levels of fluency, from learners using a ‘cúpla focal’, to native Irish speakers from the Gaeltacht.

€21m TV licence shortfall amid RTÉ seeking €34.5m in additional funding

RTÉ has their hand out seeking €34.5 million in additional funding, Media Minister Catherine Martin has confirmed this week, in addition, the projected licence fee deficit is expected to be €21 million. She said that the government was not going to accept the figures that were presented by the national broadcaster and the figures will be independently verified by New Economy and Recovery Authority.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that he believes the vast majority of the public do value public service broadcasting. “But I don’t think that the Irish public would accept a financial bailout of RTÉ with no strings attached. There has to be strings attached,” he said, stating the funding would have to be “conditional”. “And that’s why we’re not in a position to sign off on something like that, until we’ve seen the new strategy and the reform plan,” he said.

The controversy that engulfed the RTÉ in June after revelations about the underreporting of the salary paid to Ryan Tubridy triggered a multi-million-euro drop-off in TV licence revenue. On wider licence fee reforms, the Taoiseach said he is giving a commitment that a system will be in place by 2025. “We can’t continue to deal with this issue on a year-by-year basis,” he said.

Mysterious 'golden egg' discovered at the bottom of the ocean

A mysterious golden object has been found at the bottom of the ocean by scientists exploring the Pacific Ocean and it has left them baffled.

The discovery was made by a team of experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) were taking a closer look at an underwater volcano 250 miles off the coast of Alaska. Experts caught a glimpse of the unusual gold orb two miles beneath the surface lodged into the side of the volcano and were left puzzled over what it could be. It was found thanks to the NOAA’s Seascape Alaska 5 expedition that is currently mapping the seafloor of the Gulf of Alaska.

‘Bizarre’ long-legged bird-like dinosaur has scientists enthralled

About 148 to 150 million years ago, a strange pheasant-sized and birdlike dinosaur with elongated legs and arms built much like wings inhabited southeastern China, with a puzzling anatomy suggesting it either was a fast runner or lived a lifestyle like a modern wading bird.

Scientists said this week that they have unearthed in Fujian Province the fossil of a Jurassic Period dinosaur they named Fujianvenator prodigiosus – a creature that sheds light on a critical evolutionary stage in the origin of birds. The question of whether the Fujianvenator should be classified as a bird depends on how one defines a bird, according to study leader Min Wang, a palaeontologist at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Asked for a word to describe Fujianvenator, Wang replied, “I would say ‘bizarre’. Fujianvenator is far from similar to any modern birds.”

Fujianvenator is a member of a grouping called avialans that includes all birds and their closest non-avian dinosaur relatives, Wang said. Despite their modest beginnings, birds survived the asteroid strike 66 million years ago that doomed their non-avian dinosaur comrades. Scientists are seeking a better understanding of the origin of birds, as well as non-avian dinosaurs with bird-like traits.

The earliest chapters in the history of birds remain murky due to the paucity of fossils. After Archaeopteryx – a crowsized bird with teeth, a long bony tail and no beak whose fossils were first found in the 19th century – there is a canyon of about 20 million years before the next birds appear in the fossil record.

What is known for sure, is there is still a big gap between the oldest known bird and the second-oldest known birds.

Earth has just experienced its hottest three-month period on record by a significant margin. The global average temperature for June, July and August was 16.77°C, 0.66°C above average, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

“Climate breakdown has begun,” said António Guterres, secretary-general of the United Nations, in a statement. “Our climate is imploding faster than we can cope with extreme weather events hitting every corner of the planet. Surging temperatures demand a surge in action.” Last month was the hottest August in records going back to 1940 and the second hottest month ever after this July, when the average global temperature was 16.95°C. Ocean temperatures have been even warmer, averaging 20.98°C in August – the new hottest month on record.

Both July and August were estimated to be 1.5°C above the pre-industrial average, temporarily reaching the limit on yearly average warming established by the Paris Agreement.

The average for the year to date is only 0.01°C behind 2016, which holds the record for the hottest year, with El Niño, a periodic buildup of warm water in the eastern Pacific, expected to keep boosting global temperatures.

Government warned it risks overheating economy

The government's budget will include core spending increases of €5.2bn and additional temporary spending, such as help with energy costs. The Irish Fiscal Advisory Council says there is "little to no justification for further temporary non-core measures."

The Irish government is at risk of overheating the economy in a repeat of past mistakes, the country’s budget watchdog has warned.

The Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (IFAC) has published its analysis ahead of next month’s budget.

It said that energy prices are already falling and temporary measures risk adding to inflation currently standing at 5.8%.

The watchdog criticises the government’s intention to breach its rule that core public spending should increase by no more than 5% annually.

The budget plan will see core spending

increase by more than 6% in 2024.

The council said the government now plans to repeatedly breach the National Spending Rule every year to 2026 and describes this as "a serious cause for concern".

Despite the strong economic performance, high housing costs and strained public services mean many people feel they are not sharing in the country’s prosperity.

The IFAC said it recognises pressures for additional spending and that there is a good case to be made for additional public investment. But it said that "these pressures should be funded sustainably", suggesting that new spending commitments should be offset with tax increases or spending adjustments elsewhere.

Irish Finance Minister Michael McGrath rejected the IFAC criticism, saying inflation meant the government had to adapt its policy, which included breaching the spending rule.

Classic convoy from Kilgarvan to Killarney show

Two classic car events are set to join forces in Killarney on Sunday.

Kilgarvan-based Roughty Valley Vintage Club will embark on its annual ‘Remembering Elaine’ classic and vintage car run on Sunday morning.

The run will leave the South Kerry village on Sunday morning and will drive, in convoy, to the Killarney Valley’s Classic and Vintage Club’s annual show at Killarney Racecourse.

The Killarney Valley event will celebrate women’s contribution to car culture in Kerry.

Their September show, dubbed ‘Heel and Wheels’ is open to all cars, jeeps and motorbikes including Classic, Vintage, Retro and Modified vehicles.

“There is a twist to this year's show, as there is a special call out to all the Lady drivers.

So for each Lady that shows a vehicle at the show, they will be entered into a draw for some fantastic prizes held on the day,” said club secretary Richard O’Donoghue.

PAINT LIKE A PRO: HOW TO PAINT EXTERIOR WALLS

STEP 1: PREPARATION

Before you grab that paintbrush, let's talk prep. Protect surrounding surfaces by laying down dust sheets and masking off features and fittings (e.g., windows, door frames etc.).

Next, give those walls a good scrubbing to remove nasty contaminants like dirt and mould. Once fully dry, scrape down the walls so there are no uneven surfaces.

Painting your walls is a great way to protect your exterior and boost your home’s curb appeal. If you want to refresh your exterior walls, but don’t know where to start read our guide below.

BEFORE YOU START...

If you’re working with a freshly plastered surface, we recommend giving it about six months to fully dry out before painting.

Fix minor defects (e.g., cracks, holes, scratches) by applying an appropriate filler such as Prestonett Exterior Filler. Once dry, smooth it out with sandpaper and wipe away any dust.

STEP 2: CHECK IF YOUR WALLS NEED SEALING

A simple test is to run your hand along the wall. If you're left with a powdery residue, seal 'em up! Apply Ralston Wall Primer to seal any unstable areas and to ensure that the first coat of paint adheres correctly. Dilute it with water by a ratio of 1:1, making sure to mix thoroughly. Apply the primer to your wall as you would a normal paint and give it roughly four hours to dry.

Tip: If your house faces onto the street, display “wet paint” signs so passers-by don’t get any nasty surprises!

STEP 3: PAINT!

Always use a masonry paint when painting your home’s exterior. Dulux Weathershield is made in Ireland and is perfect for our unique weather.

Tip: In recent years, more lime-based or breathable plaster has been used in Ireland. To ensure that you maintain the breathability of your walls, be sure to use a breathable masonry paint which will not unnecessarily seal your surface.

Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Event to be hosted in Killarney

The Alzheimer’s Annual Memory Walk will take place in Killarney National Park on September 24.

The local event is one of 30 taking place nationwide and it gives families, friends and those living with dementia the opportunity to come together, honour, celebrate and raise funds for the vital support services that The Alzheimer Society of Ireland provides.

really looking forward to the Killarney Alzheimer's Memory Walk which should attract huge crowds,” she said.

The Alzheimer’s Memory Walk is a family-friendly event suitable for all ages and walking abilities to unite friends, families and communities to raise awareness and funds for dementia supports. The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is aiming to secure over 3,000 walkers across Ireland to participate and help raise funds for vital services that support so many people living with dementia and those who care for them. These services include Daycare, Daycare at Home, Family Carer Training, Social Clubs, Cafés, and a National Helpline.

Killarney fundraiser for Bumbleance

The Turas Nua team in Kerry recently ‘gave back’ to their local community by spending a day volunteering their time with BUMBLEance, the Children’s Ambulance Service in Killarney.

Turas Nua team members from Killarney, Tralee, Listowel, Dingle and Caherciveen braved the wet conditions and spent the afternoon running a street bucket collection to raise funds for this vital service. BUMBLEance is the first service of its kind in the world and operates nearly 2,000 trips per year. They provide safe and comfortable transportation for Ireland’s youngest patients as they travel between their homes and hospitals, hospices, treatment centres and respite centres. Their aim is to distract, comfort and entertain these young patients on their health related trips.

Nua. That is why Turas Nua developed their ‘Give Back Day’, an annual programme whereby the various offices of Turas Nua operating around the country give a day’s worth of activity to help local community groups, nonprofit organisations and charities in areas that require support.

“As part of our normal working process, each day we put a focus on improving the communities we work in. Normally that is through our work supporting individuals seeking employment or training, as well as by assisting the thousands of employers we work with around the country,” said JulieAnn McCann, General Manager of Turas Nua.

Major aquaculture conference set for Killarney

An international aquaculture conference will take place in the Brehon Hotel next month.

The Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) organised- conference aims to position Ireland as the centre of excellence for aquatechtechnology enabling sustainable seafood farming.

The conference titled “Aquatech – Ireland’s Global Opportunity” is being held in partnership with global aquaculture accelerator, Hatch, and supported by the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund.

It will gather some of the world’s leading experts in aquaculture including Kristen Virega, SVP Global Shrimp efishery, Neil Sims, Founder and CEO, Ocean Era and Jennifer Bushman, Sustainable Aquaculture Strategist and Communicator. BIM CEO, Caroline Bocquel, is also among the key speakers.

According to Richard Donnelly, Bord Iascaigh Mhara’s Development and Innovation director, there are currently 62 aquatech companies operating in Ireland, employing almost 900 people and with a combined turnover of €217 million.

Supports for farmers

I am a farmer but I’m finding it hard to manage on the income from farming. What social welfare schemes can help?

You may be eligible for Farm Assist, a weekly means-tested payment for low-income farmers.

How do I qualify for Farm Assist?

To qualify for Farm Assist, you must be a farmer farming land in Ireland, aged between 18 and 66, and you must pass a means test. There is an online calculator for Farm Assist is on the IFA website www.ifa.ie which will help you work out whether you are eligible for Farm Assist.

Hickey’s Centra Rathmore carbon reduction measures

Hickey’s Centra Rathmore has achieved a 49% carbon reduction since implementing sustainable initiatives over the last year.

As part of the significant store investment Hickey’s Centra Rathmore has incorporated a number of sustainability upgrades to enhance the efficiency of the store, including the upgrading of its refrigeration and freezer equipment, and the installation of LED lightbulbs and eSELs on shelving. In addition to these energy efficiencies, the store features a ‘Reduced to Clear’ section to help combat food waste and has appointed a member of staff take on the role of sustainability champion.

Sustainability efforts at Centra Rathmore also extend beyond the store, with the Hickey’s involved in supporting local sports clubs and charities in the locality. In 2022, the Centra store donated €5,000 to the local community.

You are considered a farmer, if you farm land that you own or lease and that you use for the purpose of husbandry (working the land with the aim of taking produce from the land). It is not sufficient for a person simply to own a farm of land.

How much is Farm Assist?

The current maximum rate of Farm Assist is €220 per week. There are also increases for:

• An adult dependant (€146)

• Child dependants under 12 (€42 fullrate, €21 half-rate)

• Child dependants 12 and over (€50 full-rate, €25 half-rate)

How are my means assessed for Farm Assist?

All your sources of income are assessed in the means test, including cash income, capital (the first €20,000 of which is not taken into account), and maintenance paid to you.

The means test includes income from the farm and off-farm self-employment, farm schemes and direct payments, leasing of land, and other employment. Only some of your income (70%) is assessed and there are disregards if you have children and if you are on certain farming schemes.

Your income from farming is assessed as gross income that you, your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant may be expected to receive minus any expenses you incur to earn that income. Your income from the previous 12 months is used to assess your likely future earnings. However, it is not simply assumed that your previous year’s earnings will be repeated the following year as farmers can have significant variations in income from year to year. When you apply for Farm Assist, a social welfare inspector will call to see you and ask to see various documents. For example, accounts prepared for tax purposes, creamery returns, cattle registration cards, details of headage payments and area aid.

They will also want information on the sale of crops, cattle, milk and other produce. The inspector will then assess the costs actually and necessarily incurred in connection with the running of the farm.

These costs may include rent, annuities, the cost of inputs like feed and fertiliser and the depreciation of farm machinery. Labour costs are taken into account, with the exception of the labour of the farmer and their spouse, civil partner or cohabitant. You are entitled to receive a copy of this farm income calculation.

Will I qualify for Farm Assist if I have my land leased out?

If you have leased part of your land, the income from the leasing is assessed in full. None of it is disregarded. If you have leased all your land, you are not eligible for Farm Assist.

How do I apply for Farm Assist?

To apply for Farm Assist, you should complete the application form, which you can download or pick up from your local Citizens Information Centre or Social Welfare Office.

Are there any additional benefits available to people in receipt of Farm Assist?

There are some extra supports which may be available to you are getting Farm Assist, depending on your circumstances such as:

• Fuel Allowance- a payment to help with the cost of heating your home during the winter

• A medical card- many farmers qualify for medical cards even if they are not getting a social welfare payment ( apply on the medical card form or online on www.medicalcard.ie

• Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance

• The Rural Social Scheme

You should contact your local Citizens Information Service to clarify the eligibility criteria for each of these benefits.

Fossa march on to semi-final

Stacks next up following dramatic win over Desmonds

The Fossa fairytale is inescapably enthralling. For decades the club from the small parish alongside Killarney languished in the lower reaches of Kerry football. Now, after earning promotion from the Junior Championship to Junior Premier and from Junior Premier to Intermediate, they find themselves almost within touching distance of securing senior club status.

No one really saw this coming but victory over Desmonds last weekend has sent the All-Ireland Junior Club champions through to the semi-final of the Intermediate Club Championship, and confidence within the camp must be high after that dramatic extra time win away in Castleisland.

It only gets tougher from here, however, as Austin Stacks, giants of the Kerry club scene, now stand in their way. Stacks are desperate to return to senior level following their shock demotion in 2022 and they undoubtedly have several senior calibre players in their ranks, most notably Kerry panelists Dylan Casey and Jack O’Shea, along with the likes of in-form midfielder Michael O’Donnell and dangerous forwards Shane O’Callaghan and Seán Quilter. Fossa have plenty going for them too, particularly in the forwards where David Clifford and Emmett O’Shea have been thriving. Paudie Clifford is the engine that drives them forward and Stacks will no doubt do their utmost to curtail his influence.

The Tralee side are the favourites for this one but Fossa have upset the odds to make it this far. Can they pull another rabbit out of the hat and secure what would surely be the most famous win in their history?

Fossa v Austin Stacks takes place on Sunday at 4pm in the Fitzgerald Stadium.

LEGION

The other Intermediate semi-final sees

the Killarney Legion take on Milltown/ Castlemaine, also at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. Throw-in is at 2pm. The Legion booked their place in the last four with a deserved - if slightly nervy - two-point victory over Beaufort on Sunday last. They managed to get the job done without talismanic forward James O’Donoghue who was forced to sit the game out with a hamstring injury. It is not known if O’Donoghue will be available for selection this weekend.

Peter Keane will be hoping that his county player Cian Gammell can dictate terms with his elite athleticism while high-flying midfielder Darragh Lyne and the dynamic Eoghan O’Sullivan are also likely to be key figures.

Like Stacks, Legion are eager to return to the top table as quickly as possible and they will be fancied to advance to the final, but Milltown/Castlemaine have dangerous weapons like Gavin Horan, Éanna O’Connor and Cillian Burke who are capable of posing serious problems.

It promises to be an exciting double header in the Park with a large crowd expected to attend.

SENIOR

The Senior Club Championship reaches its climax on Saturday evening when Dingle face Kenmare Shamrocks in the final in Tralee (7pm).

Dingle impressed in their semi-final win over Spa in Tullig as the Geaneys and Tom O’Sullivan made key contributions. Losing Kerry senior Barry Dan O’Sullivan to an ankle injury is a blow but that blow has been softened by the news that AFL player Mark O’Connor has now been cleared by Geelong to line out for his home club.

Kenmare might be the underdogs but any team that can boast the kicking talents of Seánie O’Shea is always in with a fighting chance in any game.

Why don't Ireland have the backing of all of Ireland?

A recent survey carried out by Energia suggests that rugby is now the most popular sport in Ireland. 31% of respondents said it’s their favourite sport, which puts it ahead of soccer (27%), Gaelic football (23%), and hurling/camogie (19%).

The fact that the Rugby World Cup is almost upon us, and Ireland are favourites to win it for the first time ever, probably skewed the results somewhat. You can also be sure that rugby is lower down the pecking order in certain parts of the country, Kerry included. Rugby definitely isn’t the biggest sport in Ireland in terms of participation - soccer and Gaelic football lead the way there – and the fact that there are more GAA clubs in Cork than there are rugby clubs in the entire country tells its own story. There is certainly plenty of hype surrounding the Irish rugby squad at the moment but it’s fair to say that they are not universally popular. In fact, despite being adored by rugby fans, they have more detractors than any other Irish team. Why is that?

Perhaps there is a class and culture divide at play here. Over half (18 out of 33) of the current Irish panel hail from Leinster and many are products of the private rugby school system in Dublin. Ireland have been branded commercially as the ‘Team of Us’ but not many of us went to private schools in Dublin, you can be sure of that. The friction between rugby supporters and GAA/soccer supporters is very noticeable online. Some of this just basic tribalism, but some if it may be down to the type of sports fan each code attracts. While there is obviously a core of staunch rugby fans who “get” the game and follow it religiously, rugby also attracts more casual fans than the other rival sports. This is understandable. First of all, if you have only a passing interest in sport, would you rather see Ireland compete at the highest level in rugby or struggle against mediocre teams in soccer, for example?

Rugby is also more intense and, in some ways, simpler, at least from the perspective of the uninitiated. Like any sport there are intricacies that only the trained

eye will see and understand, but soccer and Gaelic football has extended periods where nothing is really happening, which can be difficult for newcomers to grasp and enjoy. (It can be difficult for the rest of us to grasp and enjoy too.) Rugby tends to have more cut and thrust about it.

For those reasons, I think there is a perception amongst soccer and GAA folk that rugby is a sport for people who aren’t really into sport. Again, not forgetting that there are loads of people who take rugby very seriously and are very passionate about the sport. But even proper rugby people have complained in the past about casuals turning up at the Aviva and having no interest in what’s happening out on the field, instead spending the 80 minutes going up and down the stairs to the bar.

I’m not saying that GAA and soccer supporters don’t enjoy the drinking aspect of sporting occasions too, they 100% do, but alcohol isn’t allowed in the stands and ultimately the match itself is the centrepiece of the whole experience. I think

this different outlook partly explains why fans of other sports might not have a high opinion of fans of rugby in general. People who follow soccer and GAA also don’t like hearing “you wouldn’t get that at the rugby” whenever there’s a case of indiscipline or diving. To be fair, the rugby crew have a solid point there.

All of these things combined mean that not everyone in Ireland will be cheering for Ireland when they take to the field in France this weekend. In fact, some will be actively hoping that Andy Farrell’s team fall at the quarter-final hurdle once again. Personally, while I wouldn’t be the biggest rugby fan and some of the discourse around the team does irritate me, I would never go that far. I will always support any team that is representing Ireland and I’ll definitely be jumping on the bandwagon in a major way if they manage to make it to the semi-final.

Hopefully most fans of other sports will do the same. We might have our ideological differences but we’re all Irish, after all. And if they win it we’ll surely get a day off work.

No joy for Crokes or Spa

Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on last weekend’s Kerry Club Championship action

Being at home didn’t work out as an advantage in last week’s Kerry club games. Instead, teams such as Dingle, Kenmare Shamrocks, Legion, Milltown/Castlemaine, Fossa and Austin Stacks all played away from home and won.

SENIOR

Kenmare Shamrocks 1-14

Dr Crokes 0-12

Kenmare took the initiative from the start in this semi-final with Kerry sharpshooter Seán O’Shea firing over two quick points. Dr Crokes were chasing this game throughout as Kenmare progressed and fully deserved their win.

Crokes were unusually profligate, kicking 11 wides and that told its own story. Kenmare led all the way and got a huge boost from the dominant midfielder James McCarthy. As expected, O’Shea contributed 0-8 (two marks, four frees, one 45). Fellow Kerry star Stephen O’Brien was very well marked by David Naughton throughout and really only came into play in the last few minutes with teo well taken points.

Crokes had to depend on Micheál Burns as their main scorer of seven points (four frees) and he kept them in it, particularly

in the first half when they still trailed by 0-6 to 1-7.

Goalkeeper Kieran Fitzgibbon denied Cian McMahon a goal chance while Shane Murphy used his legs to great advantage to deny McCarthy just before half-time. The loss of their injured Kerry players Tony Brosnan and Gavin White as well as regular full back Neil O’Shea was critical for Crokes, especially evident in the 8th minute when Kenmare struck for the only goal of the game scored by David Ciuciu. Crokes’ troubles were compounded in the 28th minute when big player David Shaw went off injured. On the plus side Fionn Fitzgerald returned for his first full game after a very bad injury sustained in this equivalent game away to Kenmare a year ago. He did very well but Kenmare

kept coming in waves, especially with their dominant midfielders. The real turning point was when veteran Dáithí Casey fouled McCarthy on the latter’s route to goal which referee Daniel Clifford deemed a black card offence. I agreed with the ref’s decision. Deliberately hauling down a player on route to scoring is a black card offence. Down to 14 men, Crokes struggled big time and in that 10-minute sin bin period Kenmare made hay, scoring five points to a solitary point by Crokes. The hosts battled hard but the Kenmare defence was very tight as they strode into the final. Crokes have a very short window of hope to get some of their key players back for the first round of the Kerry SFC against Dingle, the top club team in Kerry.

Dingle 2-18 Spa 1-12

A tally of 1-12 might win a lot of games but this scoreline flattered Spa who had a late flurry of scores unable to match the 2-18 of Dingle.

Dingle have been the most consistent top senior club in Kerry for the past few years and they stand a great chance of not alone winning the Club Championship but also the County Championship. Remember they were unlucky to lose out to East Kerry last year when Paul Murphy’s point proved crucial.

On a beautiful Indian summer evening the whole Spa environment looked resplendent for the large shirt-sleeved attendance. Spa had won all three games to date. Would they deliver in this big one? Dingle lost their most influential midfielder Kerry player Barry Dan O’Sullivan in the throw-in when he came down heavily and suffered what looks like a serious leg injury. It did not seem to matter as Dingle bombarded Spa who were defending the town goal. The Spa defence did very well to deny Dingle a great goal opportunity but, in reality, they were never in with a chance of winning.

then Glenflesk trailed 0-8 to 1-10. Young Luke Crowley came nearest to scoring a goal for Glenflesk. He had the ball in the net but the referee had blown his whistle before that and the goal didn’t count. Glenflesk were still in contention but once Darragh Roche, their Kerry player, picked up a second yellow card the result was never in doubt. Seán Quilter kicked three great points from play and one from a free.

Milltown /Castlemaine 0-10

This thrilling game went to extra time as Brendan Kealy struck a 45 straight over the bar to equalise, so it had to go to extra time.

all the strings, gliding upfield and delivering pinpoint passes which the Geaneys turned into scores. He also got his trademark off the side of the foot points, one in each half.

Mikey Geaney in particular tortured Spa, who paid the price for a defender picking the ball off the ground in the small rectangle. Mikey Geaney gave James Devane no chance with a well struck penalty. Spa battled on and got their first score in the 16th when Timmy Moynihan scored a point. They trailed 1-5 to 0-1. Pointed frees by Mike Foley and Evan Cronin and a fine point by the veteran Stam put some gloss on the Spa scoreline, but Dingle just dominated in all sectors leading 1-9 to 0-4 at half-time. Moynihan could make no impression against the teak tough Dingle defence. The ’sos’ gave an opportunity for the Spa management to assess their situation, down eight points and facing the slight breeze. But try as they might Spa could not contain Dingle, who were superbly led by Kerry star Paul Geaney who scored 1-2 in total. He was the playmaker in the second half, playing more like a centre forward, sending sublime pinpoint kicked passes crossfield to Conor Geaney who popped over the points. The latter impressed me.

The Dingle tsunami continued to roll over Spa, who were struggling to stay afloat. They were still 0-9 to 2-18 adrift against a relentless Dingle. Now 15 points down,

Spa battled bravely and finished well when Cian Tobin scored their only goal near the end.

It was a sobering experience for Spa who had been going so well, but I couldn’t see any club in Kerry living with Dingle and I expect them to leave Neidín behind on Saturday evening in the final - if they can compensate for the loss of Barry Dan.

INTERMEDIATE

Legion 0-13

Beaufort 0-11

Legion made light of this away match and even though there were just two points in it at the end, they controlled this game. They now march into the last four with that semi-final v Milltown/Castlemaine. Beaufort were weakened by the absence of four key players, so they were always on the backfoot to the Legion who were missing James O’Donoghue, their most experienced warrior.

The Killarney men went four points to one clear early on until Beaufort’s Jack O’Connor got going. By half-time a single point separated them (0-7 to 0-6).

It was nip and tuck in the second half, but Legion were never headed. The best Beaufort could manage was to draw level.

Legion upped their game when it mattered with points from Cian Gammell and Jamie O’Sullivan. They withstood the pressure as Beaufort went in search of the goal they needed. The Legion defence held firm. Top scorers were Finbarr Murphy (0-4, 3f), matched by Beaufort’s Jack O’Connor (0-4, 3f, 1m).

Stacks had some of their missing players back and they showed why it is not long ago since they were in the Munster Senior Club final.

Their key player once more was midfielder Michael O’Donnell who has scored in every game. He scored six points in this one, three from play.

Shane O’Callaghan’s goal was decisive;

The visitors shot three early points before Kilcummin got going. Sharpshooter Éanna O’Connor (0-8, 7f, 1 ‘45), Cillian Burke and the powerful Gavin Horan impressed. Kerry U20 star Burke was always a threat but his fellow U20 Dara O’Callaghan proved to be a tight marker, confining Burke to a single point.

Kilcummin did well due to the accuracy of free taker Gary O’Leary who scored five points from frees.

Kilcummin needed a goal. It never came, although they did come close late in the game. They trailed by just a point (0-7 to 0-8) at half-time. They may well have been level after Cian Foley ‘scored’ a huge point, deemed a wide by the umpires. Kilcummin fell three points behind in that second half and they were slipping, especially when key man Gary O’Leary was black carded.

The former All-Ireland Intermediate champions dug deep and had to rely on the highly experienced former Kerry goalkeeper Brendan Kealy to snatch that brilliant equaliser.

Milltown/Castlemaine dominated extra time, going four points clear. Kilcummin had to go without their top players Paul O’Shea and Kieran Murphy. They needed a goal, but the visitors cleared their lines. Matt Keane, the captain of Kerry FC who opted out of the LOI set-up, returned to Kilcummin.

Fossa 5-17

Desmonds 1-19

A huge crowd turned up in Castleisland and we can be sure that the majority were there to see the Clifford brothers. They certainly got value for money as this one went to extra time. Indeed, Desmonds were lucky not to to lose at the end of normal time.

Fossa went on a scoring spree in extra time to win 5-17 to 1-19. That did not reflect the worth of Desmonds. A powerful second half by Paudie Clifford, Fossa’s most influential player, paved the way for David’s 1-7.

CURROW

Meanwhile, Currow lost out in the Intermediate relegation semi-final 0-7 to 1-10 to Glenbeigh-Glencar. No joy either for Listry who lost their Junior Premier quarter final to Listowel Emmets 1-6 to 1-9.

Crokes battled hard but the Kenmare defence was very tight as they strode into the final.

Kerry FC issue second professional contract

Kerry FC have confirmed that young midfielder Ronan Teahan has signed a long-term contract which will see him stay at the club until the end of the 2025 season.

Teahan, who is playing his debut season in the League of Ireland First Division, has been central to Kerry’s midfield partnerships since the first game of the season. The Cahersiveen native has featured in 28 out of the team’s 30 matches, making 22 starts. The only game he missed was in June when he was sitting his Leaving Certificate examinations.

Teahan becomes the second player in the squad to sign a professional contract with the club, following the announcement that Killarney man Ryan Kelliher has also committed his next two seasons to the League of Ireland newcomers. The former Iveragh United player is a familiar face in Mounthawk Park having joined the Kerry FC Academy at U15 level. He then graduated to the U17s and later the U19s. It was announced in January that Teahan would be lining up with the senior team ahead of the 2023 League of Ireland campaign.

“I am delighted to have signed with Kerry FC for the next 2 years,” Teahan said

upon signing on the dotted line. “I can see the club is headed in a positive direction so I think this is a great chance for me to improve and further my development. I'm grateful to everyone at Kerry Football Club for this opportunity.”

Billy Dennehy added: “Ronan is a young player that has come into the League of Ireland set up over the last number of years with us. He has gone through a lot of obstacles in terms of his size and height but his determination, character and heart makes sure his ability always shines through.

“He has taken to senior football and League of Ireland for the first time seamlessly in relation to his performances on the pitch and also in relation to his improvement over the last number of weeks as well.

“He is another player that epitomises what Kerry FC is about. He is a player who most likely wouldn’t have had the opportunity to showcase his talents and abilities if Kerry FC was not available to him in his home county… I look forward to seeing what he can do for the team going forward as he continues improving in the next few months and years ahead.”

Kerry host Longford Town in Mounthawk Park tonight (Friday) at 7.45pm.

Paul’s and Cougars get 2023/24 fixture list

Basketball Ireland have released the fixtures for the upcoming 2023/24 National League season and it has been confirmed that all three Killarney sides will be on the road in Round 1.

St Paul’s will once again line out in the Women’s Division 1 after narrowly missing out on promotion last season, while their male counterparts, Scotts Lakers, will operate in the Men’s Division 1. Their crosstown rivals, the Killarney Cougars, are also in the same division.

St Paul’s and the Lakers are set for a double header against SETU Carlow in the Barrow Centre on October 1. The women play the hosts at 12.30pm while the men are in action at 3.15pm.

The Cougars get their Southern Conference campaign up and running the previous night (Saturday, September 30) in Laois against the Portloise Panthers.

We will have to wait until the New Year for the first Killarney Derby of the season as the Lakers don’t face the Cougars until January 2024.

Titans Basketball Club make the return

to Division 1 this season, adding a new dynamic to what proved to be the most unpredictable league in Irish basketball in 2022/23.

First to make the trip to Knocknacarra

will be Limerick Sport Eagles, who agonisingly missed out on promotion to the Super League at the hands of Ulster University in April. Team North West and Drogheda Wolves will be first to tip-off in ATU on September 30 in their North Conference tie.

Recently relegated UCD Marian make the short journey to Coláiste Bríd to face Abbey Seals Dublin Lions, with another Dublin derby between Moy Tolka Rovers and Mater Private Malahide rounding off conference play.

In the Super League, Garvey’s Tralee Warriors are aiming to bounce back from missing the playoffs last season and they start their season against Maigh Cuilinn (Moycullen). The top flight’s other Kerry team, Killorglin KCYMS, entertain UCC Demons on opening weekend.

Killarney Legion GAA

INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP:

Our Senior Men advanced to the last four of the Intermediate Club Championship courtesy of a hard-fought win over Beaufort. Played in blazing sunshine there was never much in the contest although we did make the stronger start leading 0-4 to 0-1 after 11 minutes. This was due to the accuracy of Finbarr Murphy, but the Mid Kerry side tried to make home advantage count closing it to 0-7 to 0-6 by half time. The second half was an even tighter affair as the ante was upped and the sides were deadlocked at 10-10 with ten minutes to go. But Eoghan O’Sullivan, Cian Gammell and substitute Jamie O’Sullivan struck for three vital points as the rock-solid defence held firm in the closing moments. Milltown Castlemaine provide the opposition in the semifinal and will no doubt prove to be obdurate opponents.

JUVENILE BOYS UPDATE: Our U11 boys were back in action and played some great football against a very sporting Fossa side on Thursday night. In all 26 boys played their part across 2 games on a great evening for football. Huge thanks to John Keane and Oisin Fleming for refereeing both games and thanks to Donal O’Donoghue for getting the pitches ready for this evening games. Ronan O’Brien, Samuel Scroope, James Murphy, Mark Looney and Jack Culloty finished their block with South Kerry Development Squads in a game vs North Kerry in Currans last Saturday morning. Thanks to the coaches and development officers for their work with the lads.

U12 LADIES: Our Legion U12 White team took on Glenflesk on Tuesday evening in a competitive match, which saw our opposition ahead for a good part of the game. With Glenflesk holding a lead, our players battled hard and put in a solid hours work that saw us briefly take the lead in the third quarter. Overall happy with the performance and effort level put in across the team but further work required. Thanks to everyone who assisted on the night- players, coaches, match officials, parents.

U14 LADIES: The U14 league continued when Beaufort provided the opposition for a Division 1 clash. A late afternoon deluge made for difficult conditions before throw in but both sides adapted well to serve up a rip-roaring contest. The second half was an absorbing contest as Beaufort found their range and picked off points to eat into the deficit. The hosts defence were put to the pin of their collars and did well to stem the tide on several occasions. Legion raised a green flag at the other end to keep their noses in front. When the ref called for the ball, it was the home side who claimed the points on offer. Well done to both teams

who served up an exciting and entertaining game in very challenging conditions. Thanks to Sean Courtney for officiating on the night. Final score Killarney Legion 2-06 Beaufort 0-10.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: In the semi-final of the Kerry Petroleum Club Championship, we welcomed Dingle to Spa after claiming home advantage after impressive wins in the group stages. Unfortunately, it was not our day on this occasion facing an imposing display of football from a hungry Dingle side nevertheless our senior side did not go down without fight. Well done to the team and management on qualifying for the semi-final stages, we wish them the best of luck in preparation for the Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football County Championship when they will play Mid Kerry in Austin Stack Park on 17th September at 4:15pm

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 0:12 Kenmare Shamrocks 1:14. A disappointing result at home on Saturday meant that our Club championship campaign has come to an end. Lining out without inter county stars, Gavin White and Tony Brosnan, and team captain Gavin O’Shea we struggled to hold form for much of the game. Kenmare started the livelier, winning the throw in and kicking the games first point through a Sean O’Shea mark. Micheal Burns responded with a point from play and his first of 7 points, 3 of which came from play. Our opponents played defensive football and pressured our forwards to kick from distance. The turning point of the game came in the 7th minute when David Ciuciu broke through the Crokes defence and slotted the ball passed Shane Murphy, increasing their early lead to 3 points. Daithi Casey and Gavin O’Shea were introduced just before half time, replacing the injured David Shaw and Billy Courtney. Both teams exchanged points for much of the half leaving the scoreboard reading Dr. Crokes 0:08 Kenmare 1:07 at half time. We started the second half with more energy than we finished the first but unable to find the target, we kicked 3 wides, one after another before Cian McMahon kicked a fine score from play

in the 7th minute. Daithi Casey was black carded in the 12th minute and Kenmare outscored us 5 points to 1 during his absence. It was always going to be a big ask to come back from there and Kenmare eventually ran out 5-point winners. Our focus now turns to the County Championship in two weeks’ time.

LGFA SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 2:07 Castleisland Desmonds 1:09. Our Senior ladies made history last Monday night when they played in their first ever Senior County Championship game. Lining out without All Star Kayleigh Cronin, current county minor start Leah McMahon and club star Lillie Foley. We played with confidence and had great passages of play through the lines but were guilty of some poor finishing, kicking 3 wides before Kate Stack kicked our first score. Both teams traded scores for much of the second half and the home side went in trailing by a manageable 2 points at half time. The first 2 scores of the second half were goals. The first for the visitors from centre forward Oonagh Bergin. Rheanne O’Shea positioned herself brilliantly to feed the ball to the onrushing Amanda Brosnan who finished raised the green flag. We were on the ascendancy and Laura O’Shea’s massive point, after a seaming run, 15 minutes into the 2nd half had the teams level at 1:06 a piece. The last few minutes were played on Crokes terms, and we ran out 1-point winners. The girls have a bye in the next round and play Na Gaeil on September 10th.

JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 3:09 Duagh 0:05. Our Junior team had a comprehensive win over Duagh in Caherslee on Wednesday evening.

INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Quarter-Final - Milltown/Castlemaine 0-19 Kilcummin 0-14 (after extra time). A huge crowd turned out to witness this absorbing encounter in extremely hot conditions. Already without the injured Paul O’Shea we were dealt a serious blow before the game when Kieran Murphy was declared unfit to play. However in what proved to be a tense and physical encounter our players gave it their all and took the game to extra time courtesy of a massive Brendan Kealy 45 at the death. The opposition proved too strong in extra time but Dara O’Callaghan, Sean O’Leary, Mark O’Shea, Gary O’Leary and Eoghan O’Donovan stood out in what was a great team effort which just came up short. RESULT: Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Club Football Championship Quarter-Final - Milltown/Castlemaine 0-19 Kilcummin 0-14 AET. A huge win for our Senior footballers on the road on Sunday evening in very warm temperatures. It took more than 80 minutes to separate these two Division 1 clubs after a Brendan Kealy '45' sent the sides to extra time deep into 2nd half injury time. Milltown/Castlemaine lifted themselves however and outscored the hosts 0-7 to 0-2 in extra time to emerge five-point winners. A terrific all round team performance to upset the odds and progress in the competition.

Muckross Rowing Club

CELEBRATION: The club extends an open invite to all our members, past and present, supporters, families and friends to attend the boathouse this Sunday, September 10th at 12 noon to mark the achievements of Daniel Daly and Caoimhe O’Sullivan who rowed for Ireland this summer at the Home International Regatta. Daniel and Caoimhe join the club’s international roll of honour, among the ranks of Muckross rowers who have been selected to race in the green jersey, following a testing year of selection trials. KENMARE REGATTAL: Best of luck to all our crews competing in the Kenmare Offshore Regatta this Saturday. The club will be represented by 22 crews across several categories from Junior to Senior and Masters. The event is among the last of the extended racing season with the new rowing season for 2023/24 already

underway. Next Saturday, September 16th, the Courtmacsherry Regatta and rescheduled Rowing Ireland 1k Classic Regatta will finally bring the curtain down on another busy rowing year for MRC.

ROWING IRELAND 1K CLASSIC: The Rowing Ireland 1k Classic is finally set to take place on Saturday next, September 16th at the National Rowing Centre in Cork. Following two postponements due to bad weather, our Junior 14, Junior 15 and Masters crews will have their chance to shine at the top national regatta for these grades.

GERRY O’SULLIVAN RIP: Our hearts were filled with immense sadness last Sunday morning at the news of the death of our former Club Chairman, Gents Captain and Competition Secretary Gerry O’Sullivan. Gerry was a great worker on and off the course for a number of years and was a major help to us in 2011 when we hosted the Irish International Open. His love and organisation of table quizzes was well known! To Gerry's family we offer our immense condolences as well as his wider circle of friends from many walks of life in Killarney. NATIONAL INTER-COUNTY: Well done to Damien Fleming and John McGrath on their involvement in last weekend’s third place finish by the Kerry team at the Men’s Inter-County event in Lucan as they continued their impressive form of recent years. The team was managed by James Fleming.

MINIS BACK: Last Saturday our Minis returned for the new season, in glorious sunshine at Aghadoe. A fantastic turnout with new players of all ages starting also, the season got off to a flyer. U16 BOYS IN PRESEASON MATCH: Our U16 boys played a preseason matchagainst themselves, getting the season off to a flying start at Aghadoe. A cracker of a game with all players putting their

shoulders to the wheel. Training continues on Tuesday evening at 7pm for the Backs and for all on Thursday evening for all. New players welcome.

CAR WASH: A very busy day last Saturday for our car wash fundraiser and the weather did not disappoint. Thanks to all who supported the event and came along to the car wash, to Ger Moynihan and all who organised and helped run the day, all who baked and brought the wonderful home baking along and a special thank you to all the U14’s and U16’s players who worked hard (and had great craic!!) washing the cars yesterday. A fantastic day! All funds raised go towards the Youths Easter trip to Toulouse. Thanks again for all the support!

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

SUNDAY: This Sunday the 10th of September, the Mar Loughlan Competition takes place on Lough Lein. Not only is the competition based on winning the overall shield but as a club on the day we also fish for the Michael Fleming Memorial Cup. A good turnout of members will be needed if we are to have a chance of winning the shield against the stiff competition out there. The top four rods from each club will determine the overall winning club. Boats may not leave the shore until 10.30am and fishing stops at 5.30pm. Weigh in takes place at the Kerry Way at 6.45pm. Also on the radar for us is our annual competition taking place the following Sunday the 17th of Septemberentries will need to be with the secretary as early as possible on this competition as we are delighted to have sponsored teams again this year, fishing for the Michael Casey Memorial Cup. A few busy Sundays ahead and tight lines to all our competitors.
