Underutilised Kerry Airport: A solution to Dublin's capacity crunch?

As Dublin Airport grapples with a passenger cap that threatens to disrupt travel plans and harm the economy, the underutilised Kerry Airport emerges as a potential solution.

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary met with government officials this week to discuss the issue.

It's time to explore the viability of sched-

uling some flights to the southwestern hub.

While Dublin Airport has reached its capacity limit of 32 million passengers per year, Kerry Airport remains significantly below its potential.

With ample runway space and modern facilities, it could accommodate a portion of the overflow from Dublin, easing congestion and ensuring smoother oper-

ations for both airports. Adding flights to Kerry Airport would not only alleviate pressure on Dublin but also provide a much-needed boost to the local economy.

Increased passenger traffic could lead to job creation in the aviation sector, hospitality industry, and other related businesses.

Additionally, it would enhance Kerry's connectivity, making it a more attractive destination for tourists and business travellers.

Of course, there are challenges to be addressed. Infrastructure improvements

may be necessary to accommodate the increased passenger flow, and coordination with airlines and other stakeholders will be crucial.

However, the potential benefits of utilising Kerry Airport more effectively outweigh the obstacles.

The government's decision to expedite the planning process for Dublin Airport's night flights is a step in the wrong direction.

Kerry Airport offers a viable option to alleviate the capacity issue at Dublin while also supporting regional development.

Fitzgerald Stadium development could boost tourism

Kerry County Councillor Michael Cahill has called for the community to rally behind plans to modernise Fitzgerald Stadium.

Cahill believes that the proposed development, which would transform the stadium into a state-of-the-art sports venue and outdoor concert arena, could significantly boost tourism in the region.

"A modernised Fitzgerald Stadium would not only attract more visitors to Killarney but also extend the tourist season for businesses throughout County Kerry," Cahill said. "The potential for hosting international sporting events and major concerts would bring a significant economic boost to the area."

Cahill envisions the stadium as a versatile venue capable of hosting a wide range of sporting events, including GAA fixtures, international soccer and rugby matches, as well as music concerts.

"Imagine being able to say you saw Oasis, Real Madrid, and the All-Blacks play in Killarney in the same year," he said. In addition to the stadium itself, Cahill wants the proposed Kerry Sports Museum back on the agenda.

The museum would showcase the achievements of local athletes throughout history. "This would be a fantastic way to honour our sporting heroes and attract sports enthusiasts from all over the world," he added.

Fossa girls win silver at Community Games

A group of five talented young girls from Fossa National School in Kerry have brought home a silver medal from the National Community Games.

Amelia O'Shea, Aoibheann Moloney, Dearbhla Kiely, Emily Kavanagh, and Jennifer Lynch represented Kerry in the Group Singing Under 12 category at the competition held in Carlow last weekend.

The girls performed the songs ‘Maybe’ and ‘Never Fully Dressed’ from the mu-

sical ‘Annie’ and secured second place. They have worked extremely hard over the last number of months on their songs and performance and they were absolutely delighted with winning a medal,” said Aisling Fitzgerald, Amelia’s mother. “They thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.”

Killarney to boldly go where no town has gone before

A new petition has emerged from the final frontier, sparking excitement amongst Star Trek fans worldwide.

The petition, launched by Sean Daly on Change.org, proposes the construction of a statue in Killarney to honour Chief Miles O'Brien, a main character from the Star Trek universe.

According to Star Trek lore, Chief O'Brien (played by Colm Meaney in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), hails from Killarney, born in

September 2328.

"Star Trek represents a hopeful vision of the future – one where poverty and discrimination have been overcome on planet Earth," the petition reads. "This statue would shine as a beacon of hope for our world standing at the centre of one of the most beautiful regions of Ireland, if not the galaxy."

The petition has garnered significant support from Star Trek fans, raising the possibility of Killarney becoming a pilgrimage site for Trekkies across the globe.

Father-daughter duo take on World Jigsaw Championship

A local father-daughter duo is set to make their mark on the international stage as they compete in the World Jigsaw Championship in Valladolid, Spain, from September 17 to 22.

Emma Quirke, a 24-year-old teacher, will be representing Ireland in both the individual and pairs categories alongside her father, Darren Quirke.

The individual competition involves completing a 500-piece puzzle within 90 minutes, while the pairs competition requires the duo to finish a 500-piece puzzle in 75 minutes.

A former pupil of Lissivigeen National School and St. Brigid's Secondary School, Emma has a long history of involvement in the community.

She was a competitive swimmer with Killarney Swimming Club and later served as a coach. In her final years of secondary school, she volunteered her time to assist with Special Olympics swimming training.

Emma's passion for jigsaw puzzles began at a young age, and she has spent countless hours completing puzzles of varying difficulty, often tackling 1,000-piece puzzles. Inspired and encouraged by her family and friends, Emma decided to enter the World Jigsaw Championship. To prepare for the competition, Emma

participated in an online UK jigsaw competition, where competitors had until August to submit their best times. She achieved a time of 29 minutes and 38 seconds placing her among the top competitors.

Over 3,000 participants are expected to compete in this year's championship.

Coffee cup waste significantly reduced –but more to be done

A recent survey conducted by the Clean Technology Centre at Munster Technological University revealed that Killarney's streets are significantly cleaner when it comes to coffee cup litter.

The survey found that only 3.8% of the weight of street litter in Killarney's bins is made up of single-use coffee cups, a stark contrast to Dingle and Kenmare, which recorded 8.8% and 6.2%, respectively. This achievement is a testament to the collective efforts of the local community, businesses, and environmental advocates.

While the results are encouraging, the survey also highlighted that there is still room for improvement.

Coffee cups from Irish and multinational chains, as well as a few non-participating local outlets, continue to contribute to the waste stream.

“While the results are encouraging, they also indicate that there is still more work to be done. The presence of coffee cup waste in Killarney, even at a reduced level, suggests that not all businesses or consumers have embraced the shift towards sustainable practices,” said Louise Byrne,

Sustainability Manager The Killarney Park and The Ross Hotels.

SURVEY

The Clean Technology Centre is committed to further reducing coffee cup waste in Killarney and is seeking input from the community.

Residents, businesses, and visitors alike are invited to get involved in this conversation. If you have thoughts, ideas, or feedback about the project, now is the time to share them. Simply scan the QR code and have your say.

By sharing your opinion through the survey, you can help shape future initiatives and policies that will make Killarney an even more sustainable town.

Geraldine Cunningham from Woodlawn recently turned her dream of skydiving into a reality, jumping for a cause close to her heart – Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland (YSPI).

"I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who generously supported this cause," said Geraldine. "Your donations will make a real difference in the lives of young people struggling with suicidal thoughts."

The primary care centre is expected to alleviate pressure on the overcrowded accident and emergency department at University Hospital Kerry.

Sara's design graces Lee Strand homework journals

A young artist from Barraduff National School has had her artwork featured on the cover of 10,000 Lee Strand Homework Journals.

Sara Prieto's winning design was selected from over 1,000 entries submitted by pupils across the region. The Lee Strand Homework Journals, now

in their 13th year, are distributed free of charge to national school pupils in Kerry. The initiative aims to support local schools and reduce costs for parents.

Gearoid Linnane, CEO of Lee Strand, praised Sara's design and the creativity of all the participating students. He emphasised the company's commitment to

supporting the local community and expressed his hope that the journals would be a valuable resource for pupils throughout the academic year.

materials, including a weekly diary, timetable, tables book, healthy eating tips, and Irish culture information.

Retail sector booming as new businesses open

Shopping in Killarney is thriving, with a surge in new businesses and strong demand for commercial spaces.

Donal Culloty of REA Coyle & Culloty addressed the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, highlighting the recent influx of new retailers to the town. The imminent opening of a Rituals store at 35 Main Street is a testament to Killarney's attractiveness to investors. Culloty pointed to the recent opening of three new stores on New Street alone - a bakery, an equine supplies shop, and a specialist nail bar - as further evidence of the growing retail interest in the area. The positive market sentiment is also reflected in the occupancy rates at Deerpark, where the former Aldi store has found a new tenant and the two adjacent units are soon to be occupied. Additionally, the Reeks Gateway development has

achieved full occupancy for the first time ever.

Despite a nationwide shortage of vacant offices, Killarney faces a different challenge: a severe lack of available professional services facilities. The demand for such spaces far exceeds the supply in the town.

Tour de France fever in Killarney

The inaugural L'Étape Ireland, held last Saturday, transformed Killarney into a cycling haven, attracting over 1,800 cyclists eager to tackle challenging routes and breathtaking scenery.

The event's resounding success has fuelled speculation about a potential future Irish Grand Départ for the official Tour de France.

Killarney's similar terrain to the iconic French stages drew the attention of Tour de France scouts, leading them to Elite Events Management, known for organising renowned Irish cycling events like the Ring of Beara Cycle and Ride Dingle. Tour de France, and limited-edition Tissot watches.

Former professional cyclists Dan Martin and Imogen Cotter, along with Irish rugby international and Love Island winner Greg O'Shea, joined the event, adding star power to the occasion.

Supporters and locals welcomed finishers at the lively L'Étape Ireland event village on Port Road, featuring refreshments, music, and cycling memorabilia.

Oliver Kirwan, race director and owner of Elite Events Management, said: "This was a significant event for Killarney and Kerry. Volunteers and supporters of Autism Friendly Killarney at the sensory area they set up for St. Patrick’s Day Festival earlier this year.

Killarney seeks public opinion on becoming Autism Friendly

The Autism Friendly Killarney Committee is launching its first-ever street collection and survey as part of its mission to make the town more inclusive for individuals with autism.

The street collection will take place on Saturday, from 9am to 5pm, throughout the town centre and at locations like Lidl and Daly's Supervalu.

The committee is urging the public to support the initiative, as donations will enable them to continue providing essential services such as Autism Awareness training sessions and sensory boxes for local businesses and organisations.

In addition to the street collection, the committee has launched a survey to gather feedback from members of the public affected by autism.

The survey features five short questions that allow individuals to share their opinions and suggestions on how Killarney can become a more autism-friendly town.

The survey will be open until September 30, and can be accessed by scanning the QR code or visiting the Autism Friendly Killarney Survey website.

"It is crucial for the committee to have input from people with autism and their families to ensure that we are making the appropriate improvements in our town," said Kevin Leahy, Chairman of the Killarney Autism Friendly Committee.

"We want Killarney to be a leader in supporting individuals with autism, and your feedback will be invaluable."

Cosy Autumn Interiors:

Transform your living space for the season

As the crisp air of autumn begins to creep in and the days grow shorter, there's nothing quite like retreating to a warm, inviting living space.

The shift in seasons is a wonderful opportunity to refresh your home decor and infuse it with a sense of cosiness and comfort. Here are some ideas to help you embrace the beauty of fall and create a space that's perfect for snuggling up.

1. LAYER UP WITH TEXTILES

The quickest way to add warmth and comfort to your living space is through textiles. Think plush throws, chunky knit blankets, and an array of cushions in rich autumnal colours such as burnt orange, deep burgundy, and forest green. Opt for a mix of materials like velvet, wool, and faux fur to add depth and texture to your room. Place blankets over your sofas and armchairs, and pile cushions of different sizes for a relaxed, inviting feel.

2. BRING IN WARM, EARTHY COLOURS

Autumn is synonymous with earthy tones, and incorporating these into your interiors can instantly transform the ambiance of your home. Deep, warm colours like terracotta, mustard yellow, and warm browns can evoke a sense of cosiness. Consider painting an accent wall in one of these shades or incorporating them through your accessories—think

vases, picture frames, and decorative bowls. If you're not ready to commit to a new colour palette, add smaller accents like candles or seasonal flowers in these hues.

3. LIGHT IT UP WITH SOFT, AMBIENT LIGHTING

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a relaxed atmosphere, especially as the daylight fades earlier. Switch out harsh overhead lights for softer, ambient lighting to create a warm glow in your living space. Use floor lamps and table lamps with warm-toned bulbs to create pockets of light that feel gentle and inviting.

4. INCORPORATE NATURAL ELEMENTS

Celebrate the season by bringing the outdoors in. Natural elements like wood, stone, and greenery can add warmth and character to any room. Consider adding a wooden coffee table, rustic shelves, or a bowl filled with pine cones or acorns. Fresh flowers in warm tones, such as sunflowers or dahlias, can add a pop of colour, while dried flowers or branches in vases create a subtler, natural aesthetic. Houseplants can also add life and freshness to your space, and they pair beauti-

fully with autumn decor.

5. CREATE A FOCAL POINT WITH A COSY NOOK

Nothing says autumn like a cosy reading nook or a dedicated space for relaxation. Find a corner in your living room or a sunny spot by the window, and turn it into a haven for unwinding. Start with a comfortable armchair or a chaise lounge, add a soft throw and a few cushions, and place a small side table nearby for your favourite books or a warm cup of tea. A floor lamp or a small table lamp can provide the perfect lighting for those long autumn evenings, too.

6. PLAY WITH PATTERNS

Autumn is the perfect time to experiment with patterns in your home. Think plaids, tartans, and other classic fall patterns. These can be introduced through your choice of textiles—like throws, cushions, and rugs—or through wall art and decorative accessories. Layering different patterns and textures can add depth and interest to your decor, making the space feel dynamic and inviting.

7. RUG UP

A rug not only adds warmth to a room but also helps to define and anchor a space. Choose rugs in rich, autumnal colours or those with traditional patterns to add character to your living space. A large area rug can make a room feel cosy and

connected, while smaller rugs can be used to create distinct zones, such as under a coffee table or by the fireplace.

8. EMBRACE

THE POWER OF A FIREPLACE

If you're lucky enough to have a fireplace, autumn is the time to make it the focal point of your living room. Arrange your seating around it to create a cosy gathering area. Decorate the mantle with seasonal foliage, candles, and lanterns. If you don’t have a fireplace, consider a portable electric one or create a faux fireplace with candles to mimic the warm, inviting glow of a real fire.

Autumn is a time for slowing down and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. By making a few thoughtful changes to your living space, you can create a warm, inviting environment that celebrates the beauty of the season. Whether you're entertaining guests or curling up with a good book, these cosy autumn interior ideas will help you make the most of this magical time of year. McElligotts EZ Living Furniture stores in Castleisland and Killarney are a perfect destination to help you cosy up your living spaces. Texture is a significant trend, especially on floors Many homeowners prefer textured pebble tiles, faux wood effect tiles, or natural stone tiles for their prac ticality, as they reduce the risk of slipping.

Tiling bathroom walls and floors in the same color is popular for its sleek look, but it can feel monotonous. Adding texture to the floor brings personality to the space

Feature walls are also trending. In muted bathrooms, a colorful or patterned wall can really stand out.

Bathroom ware is shifting toward a more luxurious feel, with warm metals and mood lighting becoming key elements in contemporary designs

In today’s climate-conscious world, many of us are looking for new and creative ways to be greener, and painting is no exception. Read our guide for our top tips to help lower the environmental footprint of your painting projects.

Test Colour Samples to Avoid Re-painting

A chosen colour can look somewhat different in various settings, so we always recommend testing a colour first with paint samples. You can apply test patches in several spots to get comfortable with the colour. Take a few days to observe how the paint colour appears on different surfaces, in various lighting conditions, and at different times of the day. This way, you can confidently get it right the first time.

Only Buy the Paint You Need

Save money and minimise waste by calculating how much paint you'll need for your project before you start. Once you have chosen your paint, you can simply bring your measurements into your

nearest branch of Pat McDonnell Paints and our team will assist you in calculating your requirements.

Embrace Water-Based, Low VOC Paint

When buying paint, look out for water-based and low VOC/ VOC-free products. These paints include ingredients that are kinder to the environment and to your health. Thanks to advanced technology, water-based paints now offer excellent coverage and quality – ensuring you’ll get a finish that is as stunning as it is sustainable. For top-notch VOC-free paint, we recommend the Ralston BioSeries, which is made with bio-based materials and rated A+ for low VOC content. What’s more, Ralston has B Corp Certification – a highly-regarded seal of approval for brands that excel in making a sustainable and ethical impact.

Use Leftover Paint on Smaller Projects

Ask yourself if there are smaller projects you could complete to use up any leftover paint. By finding creative ways to repurpose unused paint, not only do you cut down on waste, but you can also give your home a budget-friendly

refresh. For example, you could upcycle a piece of old furniture or try your hand at painting a mural.

Recycle the Paint at Your Nearest Recycling Centre

Don't toss your leftover paint in the bin or down the drain! While paint is safe to use in our homes, it can harm the environment if it isn’t disposed of properly. The best way to safely and responsibly dispose of unwanted paint is through your local Civic Amenity Site. Check out your local county/city council's website to see if your nearest centre offers paint recycling services.

Invest in Good-Quality Reusable Tools

Once you’ve caught the ‘paint happy’ bug - chances are you will paint many more times in your life, so it’s best to find good-quality tools and accessories (e.g., paintbrushes, rollers, trays etc.). While disposable tools are cheaper, they are often bad for the environment and will lead to a poorer finish. Well-made tools can be washed, stored, and kept aside for future projects.

GETTING AUTUMN-READY Boyles of Killorglin-

Welcome to 2024, where garden design merges style, sustainability, and comfort. This year's trends focus on creating inviting outdoor spaces with chic and cozy garden furniture, eco-friendly solar lights, and quality, lasting pots.

Chic Garden Furniture: Gone are the days when outdoor furniture was an afterthought. In 2024, garden furniture takes centre stage, offering a seamless extension of your home’s interior style into the great outdoors. Think plush, weather-resistant seating in neutral tones or bold colors, complemented by textured cushions and throws. Modular seating options provide flexibility, allowing you to reconfigure your space for intimate gatherings or large parties.

SOLAR LIGHTING: Lighting is not just functional; it’s transformative. This year, solar lights are illuminating gardens with both eco-friendly and aesthetic appeal. Whether it's soft path-

way lights, elegant lanterns, or string lights draped over a pergola, these energy-efficient options create a warm, inviting atmosphere without the need for electrical wiring. Look for designs that incorporate motion sensors for added security and convenience. The trend leans towards subtlety—think delicate fairy lights intertwined with foliage or chic, minimalist fixtures that blend seamlessly into the landscape.

DURABLE POTS: A trend towards sustainability and longevity has influenced our choice in planters. Quality pots made from durable materials like terracotta, stone, and concrete are favoured for their timeless appeal and resilience against the elements. These pots not only provide a sturdy home for your plants but also add a sculptural element to your garden. Consider using them to create striking focal points or to accentuate pathways and seating areas. Mixed heights and sizes add depth and interest, turning a simple plant display into a dynamic visual experience.

WATER FEATURES: The soothing sound of water can transform any gar-

den into a tranquil retreat. In 2024, water features are making a splash with innovative designs that range from traditional fountains to contemporary water walls. For those with smaller spaces, sleek, self-contained units or compact wall-mounted fountains offer a perfect solution. Water features not only enhance the sensory experience of your garden but also attract wildlife, adding a touch of nature to your space.

SUSTAINABLE PLANTS: This year’s plant trends are all about sustainability and biodiversity. Native plants, which require less water and care, are at the forefront, promoting a garden that thrives with minimal environmental impact. Flowering plants that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies are popular choices, supporting local ecosystems. Additionally, edible gardens continue to gain popularity, with herbs, vegetables, and fruit trees providing both beauty and bounty. For a touch of the exotic, consider hardy tropical plants that can withstand various climates, adding a lush, vibrant feel to your garden.

Ireland to receive €14 billion windfall from Apple tax ruling

The European Union's General Court has upheld a previous ruling that requires Apple to pay €14 billion in back taxes to Ireland.

The decision, which was announced on Tuesday last marks the end of a lengthy legal battle between the tech giant and European regulators.

The European Commission had initially ruled in 2016 that Apple's tax arrange-

ments with Ireland amounted to illegal state aid, arguing that the company had received preferential tax treatment that gave it an unfair advantage over its competitors. Apple strongly contested the claim, maintaining that its tax practices were legal and consistent with Irish law.

The General Court's decision to uphold the Commission's ruling is a significant blow to Apple, which has argued that the case is based on a flawed interpreta-

tion of European law. The company has indicated that it will appeal the decision to the European Court of Justice.

The €14 billion tax bill is a substantial sum for Ireland, and it is expected to have a significant impact on the economy. The government has said that it could take up to six months before it can be drawn down and it is expected the money will be used to invest in public services and infrastructure.

Report shows Ireland ranks last for education investment away Home

Ireland to ban disposable and flavoured vapes

In a move aimed at protecting public health, particularly among young people, cabinet has approved a ban on single-use and flavoured e-cigarettes and vaping products. The draft legislation is a part of a broader effort to reduce the appeal of these products, especially to minors.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly expressed concern over the increasing popularity of flavoured vapes, citing their potential to entice young people into nicotine addiction. Flavoured e-cigarettes often come in sweet or fruit-based flavors, which can make them more appealing to younger consumers. Speaking to media this week the minister said “Nicotine is addictive and the long-term effects of these products is not yet known, so it is important to act.”

"I know that some adult smokers use nicotine inhaling products to quit smoking so these products, other than disposable vapes, will continue to remain available."

A recent OECD report has highlighted Ireland's significant underinvestment in education compared to its peer nations. The organization's Education at a Glance report ranks Ireland last among 34 OECD countries in terms of the percentage of GDP allocated to education. The report reveals that Ireland spends only 2.8% of its GDP on education, falling far short of the OECD average of 5.7%. This disparity is particularly pronounced in primary and secondary education, where Ireland's spending is well below the OECD average.

Education unions have expressed deep concern over the underfunding of ed-

ucation in Ireland. They argue that the current levels of investment are insufficient to meet the needs of students and educators, leading to overcrowded classrooms, inadequate facilities, and compromised learning experiences. Union leaders have called for a substantial increase in education funding in the upcoming Budget, emphasizing the need to reduce class sizes, improve facilities, and provide better support for students. They contend that Ireland's failure to invest adequately in education is a disservice to its young people and a hindrance to its future economic development.

Jer O’Connor lives

life with no limits

Jer O’Connor from Lixnaw is one of Enable Ireland’s 2024 Life With No Limits Champions. Jer attends Enable Ireland Adult Service in Tralee. At the age of 18, he was diagnosed with Friedrich’s ataxia (FRIDA), a genetic, progressive movement disorder. Since then he has embarked on some incredible physical adventures, which have taken him soaring through the sky (he’s jumped out of a plane – twice) and diving to great depths in the ocean, despite having had a life-long fear of water.

“When I was young, I was terrified of the water. I remember going to Ballybunion Beach with my family. Even trying to dip my toes in the water gave me motion sickness.

After I was diagnosed, I spent a long time putting off certain things. However, I realised that my condition was getting worse and that my time was becoming limited to do the things I wanted to do in life. I wanted to try and conquer my fears and not let anything hold me back. I told Conagh, my key worker at Enable Ireland services in Kerry, about my phobia of water. She introduced me to Kerry Passion of Diving by taking me to one of their open days. They are a voluntary organisation that specialises in making scuba diving accessible to everyone. That’s when I decided I wanted to overcome my fear and achieve a diving certification. My first day of training with Passion of Diving was at the Aqua Dome. I was so afraid. But the team there are amazing. They didn’t force me to do anything I

Apple announced this week that its AirPods Pro 2 have received FDA clearance for use as a hearing aid. The AirPods Pro 2, equipped with Adaptive Transparency and Personalised Spatial Audio features, will now be available as a Class II medical device in the United States. This means users can purchase them over the counter without a prescription. However, it's important to note that while the AirPods Pro 2 can be a helpful tool, they are not a replacement for traditional hearing aids prescribed by a healthcare professional.

didn’t want to. I was slowly introduced to the water and got familiar with the equipment. Passion of Diving were very methodical and good at slowly building your confidence. Now I trust them with my life. However, back then, my fear was getting the better of me.

But on the third day, something clicked in me. I realised that I was in no danger.

I was surrounded by scuba diving instructors who would quickly pull me up if anything went wrong. I found that the fears which were limiting me were all in my head.

It was so freeing to have conquered my fears and be able to dive. I don’t feel disabled when I am under the water. It’s like my disability fades away.

To achieve the practical part of my qualification, I was fortunate to take a trip to Egypt and go diving in the Red Sea. We went for a week and spent four days diving. 20 people of mixed abilities went from Passion of Diving and they are the some of the best people I’ve met in my life.

I would love to get more people with a disability interested in scuba diving, simply for the freeing feeling it gives you. I’ve learnt it’s important to be open to new opportunities in life and to not let fears or self-doubts restrict you.

Returning to work after holiday …. Make it easy for yourself!

We all know the feeling – 2 weeks chilling out, some sunshine, experiencing different things and then … it’s back to work.

There are a couple of key things you can do to make the transition from holiday mode to work mode easy!

• Your desk

Before you do anything, tidy your work environment – clear all the clutter away. It will make tackling the tasks ahead much easier.

• Your Inbox

If you can block 2/3 hours out just to deal with your Inbox – reading, deleting, replying and prioritising emails. I always categorise my emails – red is urgent, amber is needs a response in 2/3 days and green is delete.

• Catch up with your colleagues

If someone has covered your work while you were on holiday, arrange to sit down with them and let them up-date you on any developments in your absence and take the work back. Don’t forget to thank them for their assistance!

• Your calendar

Try not to put too many meetings in your diary for your first week back –perhaps scheduling them towards the end of the week. I think non-urgent meetings can be scheduled for the following week.

• Prioritise and set goals

There will be urgent items and important ones. The urgent will always get done, the important can often get overlooked and pushed down the list. Make some notes on what the priorities are for the coming week and set some time frame around them.

• Give yourself a break Take time out for lunch and try to leave on time on your first day. I don’t believe it’s possible to go from 2 weeks chilling straight into an 8-hour day. Ease yourself in gently!

Increased funding for the First Home Scheme

Darragh O’Brien, Minister for Housing, Heritage and Local Government, has announced that the Government has pledged a further €100m to the First Home Scheme.

This news has been welcomed by estate agents DNG who have been requesting more funding for some time.

The First Home Scheme was set up to help first-time buyers bridge the gap between their mortgage, deposit and the price of a new home.

Since its launch over two years ago, the scheme has been hugely popular with 5,400 buyers approved.

Perhaps more significantly, applications continue to surge with the number of new applicants in the first six months of 2024, 43% higher than last year.

Minister O’Brien said:

“The First Home Scheme has been a big success in making homeownership a reality for people who otherwise would have been unable to bridge the affordability gap between their mortgage, deposit and the price of a new home. With today's announcement of increased funding, the scheme will extend its reach, turning the aspiration of owning a home into reality for even more people.

“Today’s announcement of increased

funding ensures that the scheme is sufficiently resourced, paving the way for first-time buyers, new home builders, and those embarking on a fresh chapter in life to become homeowners. In light of the scheme's success to date, work is underway to consider extending the scheme past 2026.”

While this is welcome news, the supply of new homes to the market, particularly on a local level, continues to be an issue. Difficulties and delays in the planning system and exorbitant increased costs are continuing to drive the price of new homes beyond the majority of first-time purchasers.

It’s East Kerry’s to lose…

District powerhouse odds-on to retain the Bishop Moynihan Cup

Reigning champions East Kerry are on the hunt for three-in-a-row as the Kerry Senior Football Championship gets up and running across the county this weekend.

With the Clifford brothers to the fore alongside a host of top talent from several local clubs, the divisional side have been the dominant force since 2019 when they beat the Crokes to secure their first title in 20 years. They have captured the Bishop three more times since, in 2020, 2022 and 2023, and now they are unsurprisingly odds-on favourites to claim their fifth championship in six attempts. This would be a remarkable feat and one that was not previously achieved by the likes of Dr Crokes or Austin Stacks who are joint top of the

all-time leaderboard with 13 titles each.

To date John Mitchels are the only club to win five championships in six years or less; they won a famous five-in-a-row from 1959 to 1963.

During their remarkable run, East Kerry have lost and regained their Kilcummin players, lost their Spa and Rathmore players and gained a Legion contingent but there will be no major changes for manager Jerry O’Sullivan this year as no club from the district was relegated from or promoted to senior in 2023.

That doesn’t mean he will be going with the same line-up again, however, as a number of young players are sure to have caught his eye during the recent Club Championship matches. Rathmore await in Round 1 for the Kerry kingpins.

As for the pretenders to East Kerry’s throne, recently crowned senior club champions Dr Crokes

appear to be well placed to at least improve upon recent showings in the Kerry SFC. Crokes haven’t reached a final since that changing of the guard in 2019 but with Pat O’Shea back in charge and with key players like Tony Brosnan and Micheál Burns in impressive form, they will be hoping to buck that trend. A fixture against Kenmare Shamrocks in Kenmare is a good test in Round 1. Dingle, who made it to last year’s semi-final and went on to represent Kerry in Munster as club champions, are a tough team to beat at this time of the year but they have been handed a potentially tricky draw against Mid Kerry, the side who knocked them out in the last four in 2023. Mid Kerry have been weakened by the loss of their Milltown/Castlemaine players but they still have a decent crop of talent to choose from. It will be fascinating to see how

St Brendan’s fare in this competition now that they have players from both Austin Stacks and Kerins O’Rahillys at their disposal. They will be fancied to get off to a winning start against South Kerry in Tralee.

This year’s format sees a return to the old backdoor knockout system with each team guaranteed two matches. The eight winners from Round 1 will advance to Round 2A with the four winners of those games moving on to the quarter-finals. The eight losers from Round 1 go to Round 2B with the four losers of those games being eliminated and the four winners qualifying for Round 3, where they will meet the four losers from Round 2A.

All Round 1 matches will be streamed live by Clubber.

Shake-up adds more pressure for Jack

Apart from the odd throwaway remark about an in-form player potentially catching his eye, Jack O’Connor really shouldn’t be on our minds right now. Under the new split season model, September should be a time of rest and relaxation for the Kerry manager, albeit with a bit of research at club matches thrown in for good measure. Kerry haven’t played in two months and we are four months away from the start of the 2025 season. The pressure should be off. But, as you can probably tell from the headline of this article, it very much isn’t. The fairly radical overhaul his management team has undergone in recent weeks means that O’Connor is currently facing unseasonable scrutiny.

DEPARTURES

First, Mike Quirke and Diarmuid Murphy quit their roles as selectors. When confirming his decision, Quirke gave no reason for stepping away after what he termed “three largely enjoyable years”. Murphy made no statement at all as far as I can see. And, so far, their departure has not elicited any comment from Kerry GAA or from the manager. No goodbyes, no see you laters, no thanks for the memories.

Given the lack of a proper explanation for their departure, fans are naturally wondering if all was rosy in the Kerry management team’s garden. Maybe some or all of the relevant parties can come out and contradict what I’m about to say but the word on the street is that all was not rosy and the outgoing selectors were not totally satisfied that their input was valued. Once it was known that Quirke and Murphy were out, the scramble to find replacements began. According to Tony Leen of the Irish Examiner, several candidates turned O’Connor down, among them former All-Ireland-winning Kerry players Tomás Ó Sé, Kieran Donaghy, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, Declan O’Sullivan, Colm Cooper and Séamus Moynihan. If that’s accurate (and Leen has suggested even more people were

CHANGES: Kerry boss Jack O'Connor will have a new management team for 2025.

approached), it makes you wonder where the men who were eventually appointed as selectors, namely James Costello and Aodán Mac Gearailt, were on the original longlist.

Costello managed the Kerry minors for four years between 2019 and 2022 and last year he was a selector under Mark Fitzgerald in Clare. Mac Gearailt was a regular starter for the Kerry seniors around the turn of the millennium and in recent years he is best known for his work as a co-commentator on TG4 (and he is a very good one, it must be said).

The pair might turn out to be shrewd appointments and their names don’t look out of place on a Kerry management ticket but when higher profile names were linked, it’s bound to affect fans’ perspective. Perhaps more pertinently, the fact that so many of those high-profile candidates said ‘no’ can hardly be interpreted as a positive.

CIAN O’NEILL

Hiring Cian O’Neill as a head coach is another outcome that does not appear to have been greeted with widespread enthusiasm by the green and gold faithful. O’Neill has been around the block a few times by this stage having previously worked with Limerick, Tipperary, Mayo, Kerry, Kildare, Cork and, for the last three seasons, Galway. He helped Kerry to win the All-Ireland in 2014 in what was the second of his three years under Eamonn Fitzmaurice. Revisiting the past and rehiring a previous coach is rarely (if ever) going to generate massive excitement amongst a team’s fanbase but players who have

worked with O’Neill say he is excellent at what he does. He also appears to have strong feelings about Kerry GAA. As recently as last year he spoke to The Irish Times about how much he enjoyed his time here, saying he would have stayed for 10 years were he not tapped up for the manager’s role in his native Kildare. “I loved it down there,” he told Denis Walsh. “I loved the players. I loved the management, the county board. Everything they did was just class.”

Not many of those 2014 players are still around – just Paul Murphy, Paul Geaney and Stephen O’Brien from this year’s panel – but the fact that he is no stranger to the idiosyncrasies of Kerry football and Kerry footballers will hopefully work to his advantage.

The managerial shake-up also sees head coach Paddy Tally (he was not officially referred to as “head coach” but he was the main man by all accounts) being repurposed as a performance coach (a role previously held by Tony Griffin); Brian Kelly replacing Brendan Kealy as goalkeeping coach; and Pa McCarthy coming in as an assistant coach. All told it is a significant upheaval for the team and one that was not anticipated or necessarily desired. After the season ended in disappointing fashion following the unexpected defeat to Armagh in the All-Ireland semi-final, it was felt that a new voice – possibly a forwards coach – would be a welcome addition to the dressing room. But the sense was that tweaks were needed, not major changes.

PRESSURE

The fact that the entire management team has effectively been disbanded and reimagined, along with the manner in which it has all played out, and the way Kerry came up short in the last two championships, somehow heaps even more pressure on O’Connor to deliver an All-Ireland in 2025.

While it seems unlikely that he will stay beyond next season either way, winning just one All-Ireland in four years with this team will be considered a failure. In many respects, the greater question of Jack’s legacy as a Kerry manager is also on the line.

None of this was supposed to be part of the public discourse at this time of year but that’s Kerry football for you. O’Connor is feeling the heat. He will be hoping that things cool down for the remainder of 2024 before he embarks on what will be one of the most challenging seasons of his career.

Lakers learn fixtures for 2024/25 season

The fixtures for this year's National League Division 1 campaign have been confirmed and the schedule will afford supporters of Scotts Lakers plenty of opportunity to see their favourite team in the opening weeks.

League newcomers the Tipp Talons will be the first visitors to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday, October 5 as new head coach Ron Howard looks to hit the ground running.

The Lakers’ second fixture of the season is an away trip to Waterford on October 12 and the Titans will travel down the west coast to Kerry on October 19. Fellow Galwegians Moycullen, who were relegated from the Super League at the end of last season, will be pulling into town on Saturday, November 16. Portlaoise Panthers are the visitors the following weekend while the always competitive Limerick Celtics come to Beauty’s Home on the last weekend in November.

There are five more home games in the New Year with another league newcomer Carrick Cruisers making the long trek down from Monaghan, and games against Ulster University, Tolka Rovers and the Limerick Eagles finishing off the home programme.

Two significant dates for your diary are the Killarney Derbies which take place in the Pres Gym on the October Bank Holiday weekend and the Sports Centre on March 1.

As well as having three new teams in the division, Basketball Ireland has

St Paul’s confirm signing of sharpshooter Marinkovic

The St Paul’s women’s team have announced the signing of Anja Marinkovic ahead of the upcoming Super League season.

The Serbia-born shooter played college basketball at Detroit Mercy and Florida Gulf Coast University. As a sophomore in Detroit she was ranked second in scoring and led the team with 59 three-pointers in the season. Due to NCAA transfer rules, she had to take a year out following her move to Florida, and she continued to progress and refine her accuracy from long distance. More recently, the 25-year-old played for Alpo in Italy, where she averaged 10.5 points per game in the 2022/23 season.

Along with Marinkovic, Simone O’Shea and Queralt Almasqué Almirall have also been added to the St Paul’s roster. O’Shea (23) arrives in Killarney on the back of a successful innings in the Super

League with Glanmire. In the 2022/23 season she lined up alongside Khiarica Rasheed in an all-conquering campaign as they captured both the league title and Champions Trophy. Success runs deep in Simone’s family: her mother Caroline Forde is a Basketball Ireland Hall of Famer and her aunts Annette and Miriam (both RIP) formed the axis to the famous Blarney side who dominated Irish women's basketball in the late 1980s and early 90s.

Queralt Almasqué Almirall has come to Ireland from her native Barcelona and now lives in Beaufort. She played for Nou Basquet Olesa at home, and while she is studying her masters online she will be representing St Paul’s for the foreseeable future.

The new players will link up with the squad this week as they continue their preparations for the season opener against Liffey Celtics on October 5 in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre.

tweaked the regulations in the league. The most obvious one is the reduction in the number of Category 2 players permissible. Each team can now only field one of this category which in most cases means clubs will only have one "American" player. There must also be at least two Irish homegrown players on the court at all times, a stipulation brought in to preserve the role of the Irish player the league.

Scotts Lakers have of course installed a new head coach in Howard who is combining the role with a coaching development officership within the St Paul’s club. He has certainly made a favourable impression in his early days.

Mikah Blackwell, a 6’6” native of Virginia, has also settled into the town and community while Patrick Lanipekun has wasted little time making himself at home, the transition made easy for him by the presence of close family in the area.

The rest of the squad has now had a couple of seasons in the league to find their feet and the young guns Eoin Carroll, Jack O’Sullivan, Mark Sheehan and Oisín Spring are a year older and wiser. Rui Saraiva is back in harness while Marko Bencic is returning to the fold. Jamie O’Sullivan is stacked with experience and know-how and the hope is that the production line will also unearth a new batch ready to step up to the challenge.

Season tickets are currently on sale for families, adults and patrons and are available from any club officer or committee member.

League champions Cork visit neighbours Kerry

Kerry FC will host newly crowned First Division champions Cork City at Mounthawk Park tonight (Friday) with the game getting underway at 7.45pm.

Cork’s immediate return to the Premier Division has seemed inevitable all season long and their recent 1-0 victory against UCD confirmed them as league winners with six games to spare. With that in mind, they come to Kerry with little to play for apart from professional pride and local bragging rights. Losing to the new boys from over the border would certainly put a dampener

on their promotion party.

For Conor McCarthy’s men the focus will be on getting a result after letting two points slip in disastrous fashion against Treaty last weekend. The Kingdom looked to be heading for another precious win at Markets Field thanks to a terrific individual goal by Seán McGrath, but a scruffy equaliser by Evan O’Connor in the 100th minute left the visitors heartbroken.

There is nothing else to do but get back up on the horse and they will take anything they can get from a Cork side who will hopefully be a little hungover from their celebrations.

‘Scoring
In-form Kelliher happy to play his part as Kerry FC continue to learn the hard way

It was never going to be easy for fledgling Kerry FC to make an early impact in the League of Ireland First Division. They are now well into year two with just six league games left in the 2024 season and costly results have been their downfall, leaving them second from bottom in the table, ahead of Longford Town. They have been doing quite well generally but invariably leads have come to nought as they have lost many points in the closing stages of games. Friday last is a good example. They led 1-0 away to Treaty United and instead of copper fastening the three points they conceded an equalising goal in the 100th minute, with the ball somehow crawling over the line at the death.

They have been scoring freely, however, often depending on Lissivigeen’s Ryan Kelliher who is their leading goalscorer. I chatted to Ryan about the goals he has scored and the ones Kerry have conced-

ed, as well as other matters on the Kerry

Ryan, yet another galling equalising goal conceded away to Treaty Utd… It was literally the last kick of the game which had run into a fairly long injury time. We looked to be quite in control, but didn’t kill them off. I didn’t score on this occasion.

But only for your in-form displays at centre forward they would really be in the doldrums.

That’s what I’m there for. My primary role with Kerry FC is to score. I’m an outand-out centre forward and my job is to strike when the opportunities arise. Of course, you have to help out at the back to create the scoring opportunities, but when the ball is in the scoring zone I need to be there to capitalise, be it a low or a high cross. Timing is everything. Be in the right place at the right time and deliver.

goals is what

Of course soccer wasn’t your first sporting experience. I remember you playing juvenile football with your local Spa GAA.

You continue to deliver. Tell me about your feelings when you do score. Ah, sure it’s everything. Magical. You have succeeded in doing what you’re supposed to do. Then turn around and head outfield to celebrate with your teammates. The backslapping is confirmation of you doing your job and also the defence and midfield working so hard to create the chance.

What is a normal week for you at Mounthawk Park?

Train on Monday and do some match analysis. Tuesday may be a specific pattern of play to be understood by all. More of that on Wednesday and on Thursday, in particular, you relax. Good nutrition throughout, and rest and sleep are essential in all preparations. The players in the LOI Premier are paid while in our First Division, the players are parttime workers. Last year we had a player preparing for his Leaving Cert and still playing soccer.

Yes, I think I was only six years old when I went to the juvenile coaching sessions with my neighbours from Spa. I played right through the juvenile ranks with Spa and they were very good to me.

I am sure the golf course beckoned with such a strong pedigree. The golfing DNA is good back to your grandfather’s time. Your dad, Tomás, was an outstanding young golfer who went to La Salle University in Philadelphia on a golf scholarship. Affectionately known as Seve (Ballesteros), he was one of those young stars in Killarney along with Eoghan O’Connell, Paul Murphy and Kevin Leacy.

Yes, I took up golf at a very young age and loved it. I still do. I was playing loads of golf when I was aged 12 and 13.

Apart from soccer and golf, what other sport do you follow?

GAA, especially hurling. What an amazing game, so fast and so skilful. I tune into darts as well, especially over the Christmas period.

You were on the Killarney course earlier today when I made contact with you.

It was a great pick me up after the draw with Treaty the previous evening. Dad and I had a great partnership together playing Jimmy Bruen for Killarney. We won our games, even though Killarney did not advance.

Even with your soccer commitments you still play off 0.5. Understandably your dad has gone out a little, but he is still a very consistent single-figure golfer. That shows your personality and how skills and winning qualities transfer easily to other sports. Back to your progress in soccer first with Killarney Celtic. Who were the coaches who nurtured your talent?

I played with Killarney Celtic from underage up and then to youths and U19s. Then I became overage and went senior under Billy Dennehy in Kerry’s FC's first year in LOI. I had some great coaches at Celtic, men such as Joe McCarthy, Neil O’Sullivan, Eugene Cosgrove and Phil O’Sullivan.

Having progressed through the different age groups, what advice would you give to young soccer players?

Listen to your coaches’ advice and follow it. Train hard and respect your club and all who have your best interests at heart.

FC soccer scene.

what I’m there for’

Managers and scouts at all levels are always on the lookout to sign up scorers. If you got an attractive bid from a top-class side would you leave Kerry FC? When your contract ends would you be open to offers?

Obviously, my aim is to continue improving and mature as a soccer player and if I got the opportunity to go to the Premier Division, or elsewhere, I would follow my instincts to reach my best possible achievements.

One of your great underage successes was winning the highly rated Kennedy Cup in 2015 beating DDSL the crack Dublin side.

That was a great achievement to come out tops in the country at that age. Five members of that DDSL team are now playing football in England. They have really made it big.

Wasn’t it wonderful that your late, great mother Sheila, a great Legion woman who passed away in early 2016, saw you win this national title?

That was a really tough time for all of us, Dad, my brother Stephen and myself. She was a great loss for us.

To return to Kerry FC, I was in contact with some ardent Bohs supporters recently and they said they got the fright of their lives from Kerry in the 3rd round of the FAI Cup.

The atmosphere for that game was electric and it became a thriller. They had to come from the back supporting each other and then the goals came.

Why do you think Kerry FC find it so hard to win games?

It is not for the want of preparation and commitment, but too often we fail to close out a game where we’re in control. Then we’re stung at the death, pulled back to a draw or even lose the game. That comes with experience. You also need a lot of luck, and we were very unlucky in several games. We are in a learning process and with just six games left we have learned and keep learning hard lessons.

Thank you, Ryan, and good luck with the rest of the season.

RESULT: Keane’s Jewellers Munster Champions Trophy Semi Final - Grattan Utd 2-1 Killarney Celtic. Killarney Celtic exited the Keane’s Jewellers Munster Champions Trophy after defeat in Cork last weekend. Celtic fought their way back into the game in the 2nd half despite being a goal down and a man down but a goal inside the last 10 mins gave the victory to the AUL Premier side. Celtic started well and created a good chance for Kalvin O'Sullivan who was just wide. However Grattan were adapting better to the swirling breeze and created the next 3 chances with Roy Kelliher having to move swiftly after a free kick moved in the breeze. The game settled down with neither side creating chances before Grattan hit the front when a ball from the right was flashed across the box and finished to the net by Christopher Bullman in the 35th minute. 1-0 to Grattan at half time. Celtic came out with a more determined attitude in the 2nd half and carried the game to Grattan but were dealt a severe blow in the 57th minute when losing a player to a 2nd yellow card. However Celtic continued to carry the game to Grattan and were back on level terms when 3 minutes later after a Lee Downing effort came off the post and was finished to the net by Sean Lovett. Celtic continued to hold their own in the game but the tide turned in the 83rd minute when Celtic lost possession in their own half and Grattan got in for their 2nd when Adam Lee Reynolds found the net. Try as they might Celtic could not find an equaliser and it was Grattan who were closer to finding the net in the closing stages as Celtic chased the game U15 PREMIER: Ballyhar 2-4 Killarney Celtic. Luke Clancy, Marco Mosca, Jason Harrington, Kiernan Kelly. Celtic held firm in the opening quarter before Celtic hit a purple patch with a 3-goal strike. Ballyhar pulled 1 back before Celtic struck again to stretch their lead. Ballyhar closed out the scoring late on to

leave Celtic winners on the night.

U13 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic Green 3-0 Castleisland. Paul McGrath 2, Dylan McCarthy. Celtic opened their league campaign with a good win over Castleisland. Paul McGrath opened the scoring before Dylan McCarthy doubled the lead. Paul McGrath completed the scoring to give the points to Celtic.

U13 DIV 2 SOUTH: Killarney Celtic Hoops 3-3 Inter Kenmare B. Hoops played out an exciting draw against Inter Kenmare. Jake Scannell gave Celtic a lead at the break before Kenmare struck back to lead 2-1. Celtic went 3-2 ahead thanks to Noah Murphy and Conor Randles. However Kenmare came back again to leave it all tied at the final whistle.

Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR LADIES: Our senior ladies bounced back from the Dingle defeat in the Junior B championship on Monday evening when they welcomed neighbours Kilcummin to Direen. Knowing it was a must win game to advance to the knockout stages, the girls started brightly and open up an early 1-01 to no score lead. Kilcummin settled into the game and were more economical in front of the posts and with the help of a penalty led by three in closing stages of the half. But the ladies knuckled down and went In at half time only down by the minimum at the break, 1-06 to 2-04. The second half saw our ladies gain control of the game and some well worked scores edged them in front. In a tough encounter both teams served up an entertaining game of football with the game ending on a score of Legion 1-12 Kilcummin 2-06. Advancing to the quarter finals of the competition, Kerins O’Rahillys will provide the opposition in Direen on Sunday September 15th at 12 noon. All support is welcome.

U11 BOYS: Our U11 boys were back in action this week with a trip to Kenmare to play the next round of the East Kerry Go Games league. The 10 am start did not deter the teams from producing excellent football, good teamwork and some excellent score taking. Thanks very much to Kenmare for hosting and to their young referees who did a great job. Thanks also to Kerry senior star Seánie O’Shea who took time out of his warmup to say hello and sign autographs for the boys. Up next are local rivals Kilcummin this Thursday September 12th. U15 DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP: Congratulations to the six Legion lads in-

volved with the East Kerry U15 team that captured the Lee Strand County District Championship in Austin Stack Park last Wednesday evening. They beat St Brendan’s Board in the final 4-9 to 0-9, a reverse of an earlier result where they lost to the Tralee area team. Well done to Nigel Shevlin who was part of the successful management team. ACADEMY OPEN DAY/BARBECUE: Direen was a hive of activity on Saturday morning as our Academy hosted an open morning for all families based in the Killarney area. Bouncy castles, fun and games were on the menu for the morning and fair to say the young and not so young certainly enjoyed the activities. Hats off to Justin Healy and Co., they have given Saturday mornings a flying start. The festivities spilled into Sunday as our Social committee hosted the end of Summer barbecue. Hats off to Brita Hegarty and her committee who helped organise a fantastic afternoons entertainment. Timmy Bull O’Donoghue wand his crew made sure everyone was kept fed and watered and by dusk the weekend had drawn to a close. A big thank you to everyone who volunteered and helped make the two days such a huge success. A sure sign that great teamwork isn't just limited to the pitch!

Fossa GAA

LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 08/09/2024 for a jackpot of €4,950 were 10, 16, 23, 28. There was no jackpot winner. The €40 consolation prize winners were Roisin Moriarty, Online; Shane O’Sullivan, Online; Pat Moynihan, Dromduhig, Aisling Fleming, Curragh; Michael Cunningham, Fossa. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online via Clubforce.

SENIOR LADIES: Another good game in the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee Junior County Championship as our young Fossa Ladies team travelled to play Laune Rangers GAA at the track. The home team started brightly but Fossa

responded and took an early lead with some superb free taking. The home team struck back for a goal just at the right time and took the minimum lead into the break 1-07 v 0-09. In a bruising overall encounter after a period of dominance Fossa hit the front early in the 2nd half, the home team enjoyed their own spell on top and closed the gap but try as they might they were unable to close the gap. Fossa ran out well deserved winners on a score of 1-11 v 0-16. Well done to all as Fossa now top Group A and can look forward to a quarter-final at home to Listowel Emmett’s.

EAST KERRY U-13 DIV 3 SEMI-FINAL:

Fossa 2-13 Glenflesk 4-08. Fossa playing at home faced old rivals Glenflesk in the East Kerry League semifinal. Both sides served up an absolute classic of a game which kept the large crowd on the edge of their seats throughout. It was a wonderful advert for all that is great about Kerry football. It had everything gifted scores, tenacious defending, spell binding saves, sunshine and heavy rain! Fossa hit the ground running driven on by their captain fantastic Gerry Moroney at midfield. Johnny Myers and Ryan Lynch scored 2 outstanding goals in the 1st half to give the home side a commanding lead at the short whistle of 2-08 to 1-05. Unfortunately, the Gods were not looking down on us at the break as the weather took a turn for the worse at half time and the skies opened up leaving conditions most difficult for the remainder of the game. The change in weather conditions certainly favoured the visitors, who used their physical supremacy to greater effect as the game wore on. Glenflesk scored 3 goals in the 2nd period to put their noses ahead and Fossa were most unlucky not to raise a few green flags of their own. However, Fossa continued to kick some great points and were terribly unlucky to miss out on an equalising point in the last play of the game. When Spa referee, John O’Neill blew his final whistle Glenflesk had prevailed by the narrowest of margins. Our young men died in their boots tonight for their teammates and their club and carried themselves impeccable all year. They were most unlucky during the season to lose both a County Semi Final and East Kerry Semi Final by a kick of a ball, better days lie ahead. Scorers were Johnny Myers 1-04, Gerry Moroney 0-05, Ross Cronin 0-03, Ryan Lynch 1-00, Mark O’Connor 0-01. Team: Noah Crawley, Noah Keogh, Donnacha Coffey, Charlie O’Meara, David Kennelly, Shea Driver, Peter Clifford, Gerry Moroney, Ryan Lynch, Mark O’Connor, Ross Cronin, George Nomikas, Eoin Murphy, Johnny Myers, Cian Sheehan, Luke Nott, Colm O’Sullivan, Oliver Bagi, Rian O’Reilly, Billy Brosnan. Huge thanks to the boys, their fantastic parents and dedicated coaches for their commitment and hard work all year. Thanks to Mike and Marti-

na Cronin of Thermohouse for sponsorship of Fossa Coiste Na nÓg.

IRISH WORLD CUP TEAM: Last Saturday in St Patricks in Enniscorthy saw Damien Fleming become the sixth player from the club to earn the right to put on an Irish jersey as he qualified as the sub for the Irish World Cup team at next month’s event in Catalonia. Damien finished third in the deciding trial and was only denied an automatic place on the team by a Hole-In-One on the last hole for Louth’s Padraic Sarsfield in missing out on a Top 2 finish. Damien joins Kildare’s Ian Dillon, Limerick’s Kieran Earls and the aforementioned Sarsfield in representing the country at the first World Cup event in the sport since 2016.

NATIONAL U16 MATCHPLAY: Unfortunately, Brian McCarthy’s defence of the Boys Championship title ended in the First Round in St Bridget’s as did Fionn McMonagle’s campaign at the same stage. Still it was another marvellous U16 year for the club overall as we congratulate former associate member Sophie Moynihan of Tralee on finishing as runner-up in the Girls event.

CLUB MATCHPLAY FINALS: These came to a conclusion last Sunday morning as Eileen McCarthy’s great year continued by becoming the first ever female member of the Club to win our main Matchplay competition after she got the better of Daniel Kelly by 6&5 in the Championship Final. She only had a lead of 1up after 18 holes as Daniel battled valiantly in registering two HoleIn-Ones in the match before Eileen finished strongly to win. The Plate decider saw Sean O’Mahoney defeat his namesake Sean O’Brien 4&3 in an 18-hole

match as Sean powered ahead after finding himself one down after the first seven holes. Our thanks to Murphy’s Bar for their sponsorship of this event once more this year.

VICTORIA HOUSE HOTEL MULTICARD:

Thanks to all those who took part in this event last weekend as Niall O’Loughlin emerged victorious in a Multicard format again but only just as Eileen McCarthy’s winning of the Ladies prize ensured her of overall victory in the Player of the Year standings with one event left. Results - Overall Nett: Niall O’Loughlin 92, Overall Gross: John McGrath 96, Second Nett: John Looney 93, Third Nett: Bobby Kelly 94 (B18), +3-7.4 Nett: Dave Spillane 95, 7.5-16 Nett: Hugh O’Sullivan 97 (B18), Ladies Nett: Eileen McCarthy 94.

Muckross Rowing Club

FESTIVAL OF ROWING: This Sunday, September 15th, the club will host the Muckross Rowing Club Festival. In partnership with the Trustees of Muckross House and the NPWS, the Festival will celebrate the unique heritage of rowing in Muckross and Killarney. The club’s oldest active rowing boat, the ‘Elizabeth Rose’ Killarney Six, marked its 100th year on Lough Leane this year - coinciding with the 60th year celebrations of the opening of Muckross House to the public. The Festival will commence at 10.30am at the Dundag Boathouse, with a talk on the history of rowing and boating in Killarney. The Dundag Boathouse is home to the Herbert Barge which carried Queen Victoria on the lakes during her visit of 1861. At 12pm, there will be a blessing of the Elizabeth Rose Six as well as a reunion of those who have rowed the boat at the Muckross RC boathouse. At 12.30, the rowing clubs of Killarney will compete in a fun mixed race to contest the inaugural ‘Elizabeth Rose’ Challenge race. The unique display of Killarney’s rowing heritage can be viewed from the Garden Quay, a short walk from the club’s boathouse. From 1.30-2.30pm, there will be refreshments at the club’s New Boathouse, kindly sponsored by the Muckross House Garden Restaurant. The club invites all those with an interest in Killarney’s rowing heritage to come along on the day. We would also encourage everyone to spread the word to those who may know an older

family member or relative with a connection to rowing in Killarney.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

WEEKEND: A busy weekend on the angling front for the club to report on we are delighted to say. Activities commenced on Friday night the 06th of September when 23 juveniles fished as part of our juvenile outing on Barfinnihy Lake. They had a fantastic evenings fishing and earned their refreshments and medals in the car park as dusk closed in. We are most grateful to all the parents and grandparents who brought the children up to the lake and to our club members who turned up to assist on the night as well. A special word of thanks to Inland Fisheries Ireland who sponsored our nights fishing on the lake - to Paul O'Reilly IFI who co-ordinated the event for us and to Assistant Inspector Tim Moore, ably assisted by Paul and Jose who assisted greatly on the night and who presented the youngest members of the outing with memorable "Go Fishing Bags" sponsored by IFI. Further to this Denis O’Neill, in O'Neill of Plunkett Street, kindly sponsored equipment to the club on the night - it was fantastic to have such great support coming for these youngsters and we are indeed fortunate to have such facilities and assistance in our localitywe look forward to working closely with all parties going forward as we expand on the activities for our juvenile anglers. Following on from Friday night, Saturday saw three of our club members represent Munster in the TAFI Interprovincial on Lough Corrib - Aidan O’Callaghan, Alex O’Callaghan and Tom Dennehy. Tom finished in 14th Place overall, assisting Munster to claim third spot this year. On Sunday 08th the club took part in the Maher Loughnane Competition on Lough Lein - In trying conditions our top four rods on the day returned a respectable 9 trout but were beaten by Owenabue Club who had a heavier 7 trout - we didn't succeed in retaining the shield this year but as the runners up we are keeping the flag flying for Kerry in this great competition - Many Thanks to Brendan Spillane and

all the organisers who ran a great competition. For the record our top four anglers were: 1) Dave Mears - Claims the Michael Fleming Memorial Trophy for the first time. 2) Steve Cambell - also had the heaviest trout on the day. 3) Paul Lawton. 4) DJ O’Riordan. Our Angler of the Year Points race is now opening up a bit following on from Sunday. Steve Cambell hold the lead now with 31 points, followed very closely by Dave Mears on 30 and then Anthony Griffin on 25.5. Two competitions remaining. ROYAL OAK: This Sunday we take to the waters for our annual competition, fishing for the Royal Oak Cup and sponsored teams plying for the Michael Casey Memorial Trophy on the day.
