Deputy Healy-Rae brings bypass woes to the Dail

Deputy Danny Healy-Rae has once again raised the urgent need for a Killarney bypass in the Dáil, highlighting the ongoing traffic congestion and safety concerns plaguing the town.

During a Topical Issue debate in the Dail on Wednesday night, Healy-Rae pressed the Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform, Ossian Smyth, for updates on the long-awaited project.

"The safety of motorists is being compromised daily at the existing junctions at Coolcaslagh, Ballycasheen, Lewis Road, and Aghadoe," Healy-Rae said.

"People's lives are in their hands trying to cross that road with cars coming out from Killarney."

He also emphasised the severe traffic congestion in the town, with roads like the Tralee Road and Mission Road often gridlocked.

"Many of the roads into Killarney are ded-

icated car parks," he added. Healy-Rae urged Smyth to expedite the process of selecting a preferred route for the bypass, which has been under consideration for years.

"Hundreds of acres of land have been effectively sterilised for more than 20 years," he said, referring to the planning restrictions imposed during the assessment of potential routes.

Two new members to Join McShain Memorial Committee

Two new members will be appointed to the McShain Memorial Committee at Friday's Killarney Municipal District meeting.

The committee is currently working to determine the most suitable way to honour the memory of John McShain, the generous benefactor who donated Killarney House and Gardens, Innisfallen Island, Ross Castle, and 8,000 acres of surrounding land to the State. It is anticipated that the memorial will take the form of a statue, plaque, or artwork and will likely be located near Killarney House and Gardens, where the McShain family once resided.

The current members of the McShain Memorial Committee include Cllr Niall Kelleher, Cllr Marie Moloney, Johnny McGuire (Joint President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce), Ea-

monn Meskell and Pat Dawson (National Parks and Wildlife Service officials), John C O'Shea, Damien Switzer, and Mary G O'Sullivan.

At Friday's inaugural meeting of the newly elected council, two members will be co-opted onto the McShain Memorial Committee to help guide the memorial project forward.

In response, Smyth confirmed that the Killarney to Farranfore bypass project remains part of the National Development Plan and that sufficient funding is allocated to complete the route options phase in 2024.

However, he acknowledged that the project's delivery timeline may be subject to review in future years based on the overall funding available.

Healy-Rae expressed his disappointment with the slow progress and reiterated the urgent need for government support to ensure that the bypass project proceeds to the design and environmental evaluation stage. He highlighted the economic benefits that the bypass would bring to the region and the frustration experienced by residents and visitors alike due to the current traffic congestion.

Killarney residents urge bypass to alleviate traffic congestion

Local residents are sounding the alarm over the detrimental impact of traffic congestion on businesses and tourism in the town centre.

Michael Cahill, a local representative, is calling for immediate action to address the issue, primarily through the construction of the Killarney-Farranfore Bypass.

Cahill argues that the current traffic situation in Killarney is unsustainable, affecting both locals and visitors alike.

The town's streets are often gridlocked, making it difficult for residents to get to work, shop, or attend events.

Businesses, particularly those reliant on tourism, are also feeling the strain as potential customers are deterred by the congestion.

"The situation is becoming increasingly dire," Cahill stated. "We're hearing complaints from people all over the county, not just in Killarney. If we want to revitalize our local economy and attract more visitors, we need to address this problem head-on."

The Killarney-Farranfore Bypass has been proposed as a solution to the traffic congestion. Cahill believes that by diverting through-traffic away from the town centre, the bypass would significantly improve accessibility and reduce congestion.

He has called on the government to prioritise the project and allocate the necessary funding.

Unless the traffic situation is improved, local residents fear that the town's reputation as a tourist destination could be damaged.

New Primary Care Centre plan gathers momentum

The long-awaited establishment of a primary care centre and minor injuries unit in Killarney is finally gaining momentum.

Last week the Killarney Advertiser revealed that Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has confirmed that a planning application has been submitted for the new primary care centre, which aims to ease the burden on the University Hospital Kerry's accident and emergency department.

The primary care centre and minor injuries unit, a joint project with Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, is progressing as part of the HSE Capital Plan for 2024. While the exact location of the unit has not been disclosed – for now – it has been doubly confirmed that a primary care centre will be built in Killarney.

In a recent letter to Cllr Marie Moloney, Dr Gerard O'Callaghan, Chief Operations Officer of the South/South West Hospital Group, stated that the plan for the care centre is progressing and is aligned with

the Health and Safety Executives’ Capital Plan for 2024.

He also confirmed that Killarney has been chosen as the location for the centre.

Cllr Marie Moloney, a member of the Cork Kerry Community Health Forum, welcomed the news and expressed her intention to inquire about the specific location at the next meeting of the forum. In a related development, Cllr Martin Grady has proposed converting the existing District Hospital in Killarney into a primary care unit once the new Community Hospital off Lewis Road is completed. The establishment of these new healthcare facilities represents a significant step forward for Killarney and the surrounding region, providing much-needed access to primary care services and relieving pressure at University Hospital Kerry.

Cllr. Moloney calls for increased Dublin flight options at Kerry

At the upcoming meeting of the Killarney Municipal Council, Cllr. Marie Moloney will propose that Kerry County Council write to the Manager of Kerry Airport to advocate for the introduction of an early morning flight and a late afternoon return flight.

Cllr. Moloney believes that these additional flight options would be beneficial for passengers who need to travel to Dublin for business or other purposes and wish to return the same day. It would also be advantageous for those who have early morning flights departing from Dublin Airport.

pate in the Killarney Christmas Markets, a brand new initiative featuring festive market cabins.

Council to take charge of Cronin’s Wood development

In a major development for the town, Kerry County Council is to take over 249 new residential units being built at Cronin's Wood..

In a letter sent to elected councillors in the Killarney Municipal District and seen by the Killarney Advertiser it has been confirmed that Kerry County Council will purchase all 149 houses.

The proposed development, by Kenmare-based KPH Construction, is located on Upper Park Road and will be delivered between 2025 and 2027.

The approval of this phase of the plan marks a significant step forward in addressing the housing crisis in Killarney and providing much-needed new homes for the community.

Local councillor Niall ‘Botty’ O'Callaghan said: "A real light at the end of a long tunnel. It is a huge step in the right direction, I cannot ever recall, in my time as a councillor that the local authority has purchased so many houses in one go.”

While it is not yet clear who will be able to purchase these new houses or how the scheme will work O’Callaghan added: “We also need to find schemes for young couples not able to get on the housing list or the housing ladder. They are falling between the cracks. But this is a step in the right direction.”

Updates sought on traffic management plan at St. Oliver's

Cllr. Martin Grady is continuing his efforts to address the longstanding issue of traffic congestion and limited parking at St. Oliver's National School during peak hours.

At Friday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, Grady will raise the matter once again, urging for a comprehensive traffic management plan to alleviate the problem.

While St. Oliver's School received planning approval for a new one-way vehicular set-down area, revised pedestrian

facilities, and relocated parking facilities, the implementation of these changes depends on funding.

Grady is emphasising the need for a solution to the traffic flow and parking issues, highlighting the inconvenience and safety concerns for parents, students, and the local community.

In December 2023, a meeting was held between the Killarney Municipal District Office, An Garda Síochána, and representatives from St. Oliver's National School to discuss potential traffic management solutions.

Killarney House hosts key US state legislators

A delegation of prominent US state legislators and legislative staff from the Corporate Policy Group National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) visited Killarney this week.

Hosted by Kerry County Council the aim of the conference was to explore potential development and exchange opportunities.

The meeting, held at the historic Killarney House, brought together some of the most influential decision-makers in state assemblies across America with senior officials from Kerry County Council. The NCSL is the parent body of US State Legislators and Legislative Staff, repre-

senting a significant portion of the legislative leadership in the United States.

Leading the Kerry delegation was Mayor of Kerry Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald who welcomed the visiting US officials and emphasised the potential for fruitful collaboration between the two regions. Senior officials from the local authority were also present to discuss potential areas of cooperation.

Fianna Fáil candidate wants town councils returned

Killarney-based Fianna Fáil general election candidate Linda Gordon Kelleher has said she passionately believes that town councils should be restored as a matter of priority as abolishing them in the first place was a serious error of judgement.

She said a town the size of Killarney, where the population has increased significantly and where tens of thousands of visitors are catered for every year, needs the power and the resources to manage itself.

“As the premier tourist town in the country, Killarney requires its own budget rather than fighting for scraps and having to go with the begging bowl to Tralee.

“The former town councils in Killarney, Tralee and Listowel set their own budgets which were decided by councillors who were elected by the people rather than by civil servants and knew what the towns needed.

“It worked well and in 2014 there was absolutely no need for Phil Hogan and co to interfere and try to fix something that wasn’t broken,” Gordon Kelleher said.

“The Killarney and South Kerry area has been underfunded and seriously neglected by not having its own voice in the corridors of power and a town council with its finger on the pulse and with strong connections to Government can help restore some of that balance,” she added.

The first time general election candidate, a solicitor based in Killarney, said Fianna

Fáil is committed to restoring town councils going forward and revamped local authorities can play a vital role in some of the most important issues facing the county – especially in helping to build more homes which they always did so well.

“Those living in Killarney, in Kenmare, in Killorglin, in Cahersiveen and all over Kerry know what their home towns need, they know their strengths, they know their weaknesses and they know the need for proper investment on housing, roads, infrastructure and health and social care.

“I will be a strong voice for Killarney and South Kerry in Dáil Éireann and I would cherish the opportunity to work closely with a newly elected town council for the betterment of our home place,” Gordon Kelleher said.

Outdoor dining on the agenda at Municipal District meeting

Outdoor dining in Killarney will be a hot topic at Friday's meeting of the Killarney Municipal District.

Two councillors have raised concerns about the current management of outdoor dining areas in the town centre.

Cllr. Martin Grady is seeking an update on a previous motion he raised regarding the widened footpaths.

He is requesting that footpaths that are not being used for outdoor dining be re-

turned to car parking spaces.

Cllr. John O'Donoghue is proposing that the Town Management Plan be reviewed ahead of next year's tourist season to ensure consistency in all outdoor dining areas. He believes that all dining areas should be located on the new black top areas rather than on the footpath, as this can pose a hazard for people with disabilities, particularly those with visual impairments.

Three local hotels, the Arbutus Hotel, Randles Hotel, and The Victoria, will be joining a nationwide relay cycle along the Wild Atlantic Way to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

The 800km cycle challenge, organised by Original Irish Hotels, will take place from September 30 to October 7, starting in Baltimore, Cork, and ending in Dunfanaghy, Donegal. The event marks the 10th anniversary of the Wild Atlantic Way and aims to raise €50,000 for the charity.

Milltown farm among finalists for Quality Milk Awards

The McCarthy Farm in Milltown has been named a finalist in the prestigious 2024 National Dairy Council and Kerrygold Quality Milk Awards.

The farm is one of two finalists from Kerry, and one of eleven finalists nationwide.

The annual awards recognise Ireland's top dairy producers who excel in milk quality, animal care, sustainable farming practices, and environmental stewardship.

A panel of experts, including academics and industry professionals, evaluated the finalists based on a wide range of criteria.

Mark Keller, Interim CEO of the National Dairy Council, said: "This is exactly why Irish dairy is so unique and special. The family farming model has been practiced here for thousands of years, ensuring the high quality of Irish dairy products."

The awards ceremony will take place on October 1, at Lyrath Estate Hotel in Co. Kilkenny.

Young writers dive into the world of rubber ducks

A group of young writers from the Story Sanctuary workshop have taken their imaginations for a splash, crafting entertaining tales about the lives of rubber ducks.

The workshop, hosted by Sorcha Trant, invited the children to choose a duck from the Killarney Duck Store and then weave their own unique stories around their quacky companions.

The resulting tales were as diverse as the ducks themselves.

From a cow-duck named Cowfinda to a squeaky clean duck who feared drowning, the children's imaginations ran wild.

There was a roguish duck named Billy Bob Joe who irritated his nemesis, Mr. Bacon, and a rags-to-riches story about a sparkly duck that was just out of reach. One duck even travelled all the way from Osaka, Japan, to end up in the hands of a little pigtailed girl.

The children's creativity and enthusiasm were on full display during the workshop, and their stories were a testament to their imagination and storytelling skills. A prize-giving ceremony took place on Sunday last where the young writers were celebrated for their imaginative tales.

Kilcummin GAA Golf Classic a huge success

The annual Kilcummin GAA golf classic, played in perfect sunshine at Beaufort Golf Club last weekend, was a resounding success with up to 80 teams competing for generous prizes.

This event serves as a valuable fundraiser and also honours the memory of Anthony 'Skinner' O'Sullivan, who tragically passed away in 2017 at a young age. During the event, Kathleen Lynch presented a cheque to the Kilcummin GAA Club on behalf of Anthony's friends and the local community living abroad.

"This generous donation will significantly help cover the costs of running the event, and we are immensely grateful to everyone who contributed," said Mike Riordan of the Golf Classic Organising Committee.

At the prize-giving ceremony, Paddy O'Sullivan presented a perpetual cup to the winning team (Donie McSweeney, David Walsh, and Pat Ryan) in memory of Anthony.

The club also expressed its sincere appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the committee, sponsors, and community members who made the event possible.

Other prizes included nearest-the-pin awards for Simon Coffey and Owen Hayes, and the longest drive went to Noel Duggan.

Black Valley welcomes greater connection

The Black Valley, renowned as one of the last regions in Ireland to receive electricity, is now embracing the digital age.

A historic moment for the remote Black Valley occurred last Friday as the first homes and farms were connected to high-speed fibre broadband.

This milestone marks the completion of a significant project by National Broadband Ireland (NBI) under the National Broadband Plan (NBP).

Residents and businesses can now enjoy the same reliable, high-speed internet access as urban areas, thanks to NBI's efforts.

Connecting the Black Valley presented unique challenges due to its remote location and rugged terrain.

NBI worked closely with government officials, conservationists, and local residents to ensure minimal disruption to the area's natural beauty and heritage.

Minister of State Ossian Smyth celebrated this achievement, emphasising the government's commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring all communities have access to high-speed broadband. He highlighted the transformative impact this connectivity will have on local residents and businesses.

Peter Hendrick, CEO of NBI, expressed his delight at the successful completion of the Black Valley project. He acknowledged the challenges faced but emphasized the team's dedication to delivering broadband to rural Ireland.

Kealan Donoghue, Director of Broadband & TV at eir, a partner in the NBP, highlighted the positive impact of high-speed broadband on rural communities. He noted that the Black Valley now has access to both fibre broadband and 5G mobile connectivity, providing residents with a range of options to stay connected.

Matt completes Alphabet Parkrun Challenge in The Hague

Local runner Matt O'Sullivan successfully completed the Alphabet Parkrun Challenge in Zuiderpark, The Hague, Netherlands, last Saturday.

The challenge involves completing an official parkrun event starting with every letter of the alphabet.

As there is no parkrun beginning with the letter "x," a X-mas Day parkrun is accepted to fulfil this requirement. O'Sullivan completed his Christmas Day parkrun in Tralee, in December 2023.

During his journey to complete the challenge, O'Sullivan ran parkruns on two islands: Bere Island and Inis Meain, Aran Islands.

He also participated in events in Northern Ireland (Queens, Belfast) and the United Kingdom (Jesmond Dene, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; Pavilion Gardens, Peak District; University Gardens, Oxford; and York

Racecourse).

In total, O'Sullivan completed 109 parkruns, with the majority being in his home town of Killarney. Other Kerry parkruns he participated in included Fenit, Inch, Listowel, and Tralee.

Parkruns take place every Saturday morning across Europe.

In Kerry alone, there are parkruns in Killarney House, Fenit, Inch, Listowel, and Tralee.

O'Sullivan's alphabet included Ardgillan, Bere Island, Castletown House, Darndale, Edwin Carolan (Cavan), Fenit, Glen River, Hartstown, Inis Meain, Jesmond Dene, Killarney House, Laytown, Macroom, Newcastle West, Oranmore, Pavilion Gardens, Queen’s Belfast, River Valley, SETU Waterford, Tramore Road, University Gardens Oxford, Vandeleur, Waterstown, X-mas Day, York Racecourse, and Zuiderpark.

Darcy will again be in action on Sunday morning but her Sunday morning workshop is aimed at adults and will be a mixture of scientific exploration, knowledge sharing, creative fun, and connection with nature.

Finally, the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks Access Officer, Ronan O’Connor and ecologist Daire O’Hare Doherty will deliver an Upland Ecology and Management workshop at Cronin’s Yard.

Council to focus on housing crisis at Friday’s meeting

The housing crisis in Killarney will be a central topic of discussion at the upcoming meeting of the Killarney Municipal Council on Friday.

Several councillors have submitted questions to Kerry County Council regarding the urgent need for affordable and social housing in the area.

Cllr. Maura Healy-Rae has proposed the use of modular housing as a potential solution to address the homelessness issue in Killarney. She believes that the current situation, which forces homeless individuals to travel to Tralee for accommodation, is unacceptable. Other councillors have raised concerns about the lack of affordable housing options for local residents who fall outside

of the social housing income threshold. Brendan Cronin have both inquired about the status of the affordable housing survey conducted earlier this year and the Council's plans for providing affordable homes in Killarney.

Cronin has also requested a detailed report from the Housing Department outlining their plans for social and affordable housing construction in the

Killarney Municipal District for 2025. Cllr. Niall Kelleher has also sought information on the results of the affordable housing survey and the steps being taken to implement a social housing scheme in Killarney MD. He has also asked for details on the number of people currently on the transfer list for housing in the area and the types of units they are seeking.

The Wolfe Tones bid fond farewell to Killarney

The Wolfe Tones, one of Ireland's most legendary and enduring folk groups, performed their final shows at The Gleneagle this weekend, marking the end of an era at a venue that had been a special part of the band's journey.

Famous for their rousing anthems and deeply rooted Irish folk traditions, The Wolfe Tones have captivated audiences for 60 years, and The Gleneagle has been a cherished stop on their tour schedule since the very beginning.

The weekend's two sold-out shows were an emotional farewell to a venue that held special meaning for the band and their fans.

"We have always felt a deep connection to Killarney and The Gleneagle. The energy and passion of the audiences here have been unforgettable over the years," said band member Tommy Byrne. "This weekend's performances were a celebration of everything we've shared together."

The Gleneagle had hosted The Wolfe Tones hundreds of times throughout the band's 60 years on the road.

Patrick O'Donoghue, CEO of The Gleneagle, said, "The Wolfe Tones were stalwarts of our cabaret for decades, performing in The Gleneagle Ballroom every Thursday night of the summer. They have a rich history of standing-room-only concerts at The Gleneagle, so it's fitting that their final bow here was to a full house in The Gleneagle INEC Arena. It is an emotional farewell, but we wish Brian, Tommy, and Noel the very best for the future."

The 8,000 fans lucky enough to have tickets for the weekend's concerts heard a memorable setlist featuring all the favourites as well as special moments to mark the significance of these final performances at The Gleneagle.

The Wolfe Tones are set to perform their last-ever concerts in Dublin's 3Arena in October.

‘Streetscapes’ art project to be unveiled on College Square

A unique art project showcasing the perspectives of young children on their hometown is set to be unveiled on College Square on Wednesday next.

The ‘Streetscapes’ project is a collaboration between Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership at Kerry ETB, creative practitioners Me and The Moon, and the Architecture Kerry festival initiative at Kerry County Council.

It will feature a large-scale artwork on the exterior wall of Reen's Life Pharmacy in College Square.

Created by children aged seven to ten, the artwork reflects the built environment of Killarney through the eyes of its young residents.

Artist David Fortune, who facilitated the project, praised the children's artistic abilities and their ability to capture the

essence of their surroundings.

Deirdre Enright, Co-Ordinator of the Local Creative Youth Partnership at Kerry ETB, expressed gratitude to Reen's Life Pharmacy for providing the wall space for the public display.

The project is supported by Creative Ireland and the Department of Education through Kerry ETB and Kerry County Council. Victoria McCarthy, Festival Organizer and Architectural Conservation Officer at Kerry County Council, highlighted the importance of involving young people in the Architecture Kerry program to gain valuable insights into their town and the world around them.

‘Streetscapes’ is a must-see for anyone interested in art, community engagement, and the unique perspectives of children. The artwork will be on display in College Square, Killarney, until October 25.

Europol's cracks ‘Ghost’ encryption network

Law enforcement agencies across Europe, Australia, Canda and the US have successfully dismantled a sophisticated dark web communication network known as "Ghost."

This operation, codenamed "Ghostbuster," resulted in the arrest of several individuals in Ireland this week, among other countries, and the seizure of significant amounts of illicit goods. Ghost was a highly encrypted platform that facilitated the sale of illegal items, including firearms, drugs, and stolen personal data. The platform boasted an impressive user base of thousands of

criminals and was notoriously difficult for law enforcement to infiltrate. However, Europol's investigators managed to gain a foothold within the network, allowing them to track the activities of its operators and identify key targets.

The operation culminated in a series of coordinated raids in multiple countries, including Ireland. Irish law enforcement agencies, working closely with Europol, executed search warrants at properties believed to be linked to the Ghost marketplace.

In addition to arrests, authorities seized a substantial amount of digital

evidence, including computers, servers, and storage devices. This evidence is expected to provide valuable insights into the structure and operations of the Ghost marketplace.

Europol's Director-General, Catherine De Bolle, praised the international cooperation that made this operation possible. "The dismantling of Ghost is a significant blow to the dark web ecosystem," she stated. "It demonstrates that law enforcement agencies around the world can work together to dismantle even the most sophisticated criminal networks."

1990 World Cup star Salvatore Schillaci dies away Home

Salvatore Schillaci, the Italian football legend who burst onto the world stage during the 1990 FIFA World Cup, has passed away this week at the age of 66.

Schillaci, affectionately known as "Toto", made a name for himself as an unlikely hero during the 1990 World Cup, which was held in Italy. Despite not being a regular starter for his club Juventus at the

time, he was selected for the national team and quickly became a fan favourite with his impressive performances. The Italians name lives long in memory of many Irish fans. The goal he scored in the 38th minute, ultimately eliminated Ireland from the tournament and propelled Italy to the semi-finals. Schillaci's powerful header, assisted by Andrea Carnevale, was a moment of pure class and skill. Despite the heartbreak for Ireland,

Iconic brand Tupperware files for bankruptcy

Tupperware Brands, the iconic American company known for its airtight containers, has filed for bankruptcy. The move comes amid declining sales and increasing competition from online retailers and disposable packaging.

Founded in 1946 by Earl Tupper, Tupperware revolutionised home storage with its innovative products and unique direct sales model. The company's signature home parties, where hosts would showcase the products to their friends and family, became a cultural phenomenon in the US. The business name turned from a brand to a noun and enjoyed decades of dominance in the market, reaching more than 70 countries,

However, in recent years, Tupperware has faced challenges adapting to changing consumer habits. The rise of online shopping and the popularity of disposable plastic containers have eroded the brand's market share. The company, which once symbolised American ingenuity and consumerism, has struggled to maintain its iconic status among younger generations.

the goal is widely regarded as one of the most memorable moments of the 1990 World Cup.

The striker scored six goals throughout the tournament, including a hat-trick against the United States in the group stage. His performances helped Italy reach the World Cup final, where they were narrowly defeated by West Germany. Schillaci's contributions earned him the Golden Boot award as the tournament's top scorer.

Following the 1990 World Cup, Schillaci enjoyed a successful career, playing for clubs like Inter Milan and Juventus. He also represented Italy in international competitions, including the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

Court Battle over Murdoch media empire begins

A high-stakes legal battle kicked off this week in Nevada, with the future of the Murdoch media empire hanging in the balance.

At the heart of the dispute is a family rift over the control of Rupert Murdoch's vast media holdings, including iconic publications like The Wall Street Journal and Fox News.

The 93-year-old media mogul has spent decades building his empire, transforming it into one of the most influential forces in Western journalism. However, as he nears the end of his life, questions have arisen about who will inherit his legacy and how his companies will be steered in the future. The case centers around the Murdoch Family Trust, which was established in 1999 to determine the distribution of voting shares in News Corp and Fox after Murdoch's passing. Initially, the trust outlined a plan for his four oldest children – Prudence, Elisabeth, Lachlan,

and James – to share control.

However, earlier this year, Murdoch announced plans to revise the trust, granting his eldest son, Lachlan, exclusive control over the companies. This move sparked a rebellion from his other children, who argue that it undermines the original agreement and could lead to a significant shift in the political orientation of the Murdoch media empire.

The family feud has been fuelled by differing political views. While Lachlan is seen as aligning more closely with his father's conservative ideology, James, Elisabeth, and Prudence have expressed concerns about the direction of Fox News and its impact on public discourse. If Murdoch's revised trust is upheld, Lachlan would be poised to maintain his father's conservative legacy. However, a victory for his siblings could lead to a significant shift in the companies' editorial direction or even a potential sale of some of the assets.

New trailer drops for Cillian Murphy's "Small Things Like These"

Renowned Cork actor Cillian Murphy is set to captivate audiences once again with his powerful performance in the upcoming film"Small Things Like These."

Ahead of its November release, a gripping new trailer has been unveiled, offering a glimpse into the emotionally charged drama.

Directed by Academy Award nominee John Crowley, "Small Things Like These" is based on the acclaimed novel by Claire Keegan. Murphy stars as Bill Furlong, a seemingly ordinary man whose life is upended by a shocking discovery. As the film unfolds, Furlong is forced to confront his past and the dark secrets that have been hidden for years.

Nintendo sues Palworld over alleged patent infringement

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have filed a lawsuit against the developer of Palworld, a popular survival adventure game, alleging patent infringement.

Palworld, often referred to as "Pokémon with guns," was released in January 2023 and quickly gained a significant following. The game features similar mechanics to the Pokémon franchise, allowing players to collect and battle strange creatures.

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company claim that Palworld infringes on multiple

patent rights related to the game's core gameplay elements. They are seeking an injunction against future infringement and compensation for damages.

In a statement, Pocketpair Inc., the developer of Palworld, acknowledged the lawsuit and apologised for any concern it may have caused. The company previously stated that Palworld had undergone legal review before its release. Despite the lawsuit, Palworld has been a commercial success, attracting over 25 million players within a month of its launch.

Amazon scrap WFH policy

Amazon has announced that it will be phasing out its remote work policy and requiring employees to return to the office.

This decision comes as part of the company's broader efforts to foster a more collaborative work environment and maximize productivity.

"We believe that working together in person is essential for building strong teams, fostering innovation, and de-

livering exceptional results," said Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon. "While remote work has its benefits, we've found that there are certain aspects of our business that simply work better when employees are physically together."

The company has not yet provided a specific timeline for the return-to-office mandate, but it is expected to be implemented gradually over the coming months.

Ballyduff rallies around injured racer Anthony O'Carroll

Over the weekend, the quiet village of Ballyduff transformed into a bustling hub of motorcycle racing excitement as the community gathered to support local racer Anthony O'Carroll.

and Derek Shiels, who shared their experiences from the recent Manx Grand Prix.

Renowned commentator Jim Halligan hosted a captivating Q&A session with the racing stars, enthralling the large audience.

The weekend also showcased a stunning display of over 30 racing bikes, including the two bikes that O'Carroll used in the 2023 Manx Grand Prix. The bikes were returned to their original racing livery for the event, adding to the festive atmosphere.

You can close your eyes and pray that he’ll come back Or you can open your eyes and see all he’s left.

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him Or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday

Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember him only that he is gone

Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind

Be empty and turn your back

Or you can do what he’d want Smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Glory

On the day when the weight deadens on your shoulders and you stumble, may the clay dance to balance you. And when your eyes freeze behind the grey window and the ghost of loss gets into you. may a flock of colours, indigo, red, green and azure blue, come to awaken in you a meadow of delight.

When the canvas frays in the currach of thought and a stain of ocean blackens beneath you. May there come across the waters a path of yellow moonlight to bring you safely home.

GLORY BE TO THE FATHER

Winners seeking simple path to quarter-finals

Rounds

2A and 2B of the County Championship take place this weekend

four points. Photo: Brendan Moran/ Sportsfile.

Intensity levels in the Kerry Senior Football Championship will be dialled up a notch this weekend with four teams set to be eliminated and four more set to book their places in the quarter-finals.

Last weekend’s opening round threw up few surprises as favourites East Kerry brushed aside Rathmore with 10 points to spare, Dr Crokes got the better of Kenmare Shamrocks in Kenmare, and a decent-looking St Brendan’s outfit defeated South Kerry.

Dingle, who recently lost the Club Championship final to Crokes and would be fancied to reach the latter stages of this competition, did come up short against Mid Kerry (perhaps a statement of intent by the divisional club who are shorn of their Milltown/Castlemaine players this year).

The victors from Round 1 now advance

to face each other in Round 2A (aka the winners’ round) with a place in the last eight up for grabs. One of the ties of the round sees Mid Kerry, last year’s beaten finalists, go up against Crokes in Tralee with both sides eager to take the direct route to the quarters.

Defending champions East Kerry face Milltown/Castlemaine, Shannon Rangers play Templenoe and two neighbouring district teams, St Kieran’s and St Brendan’s, meet in Stack Park. The losers of these four ties will have to contest Round 3 where they will play the winners of the 2B (losers’ round) matches. Club sides Kenmare, Dingle and Rathmore will be expected to get past Feale Rangers, South Kerry and West Kerry respectively, while Spa versus Na Gaeil is tougher to call.

NEXT STEP: Pat O'Shea and his Dr Crokes team are through to the winners' round after beating Kenmare Shamrocks by

Adam Moynihan gives his assessment of the seven major rule ‘enhancements’ being proposed by Jim Gavin’s Football Review Committee

We’ve grown accustomed to regular updates to the Gaelic football rule book. Radical changes in the way the game is being played and, subsequently, enjoyed (or not) has led to frequent and frantic tinkering on the GAA’s part. They are well aware of the widespread dismay at the negative tactics and boring fare, and, to their credit, they have tried to fix it. Their efforts so far have not really had a major impact but if the Football Review Committee can force through their proposed amendments, the effects could be revolutionary.

Here are the seven key rule enhancements and what I make of them.

1V1 THROW-IN TO START THE GAME

At the start of both halves the referee would begin the game by throwing the ball in to just one player from each team. Throw-ins have become messy with two opposing midfielders pinning each other down while the other two jump for possession. Removing the wrestlers from the equation will do no harm at all.

40-METRE SCORING ARC AND

NEW

SCORING SYSTEM

The introduction of a new 40-metre scoring arc around both sets of goalposts would facilitate a new scoring system. Points scored from on or outside the 40-metre arc would be worth two points with points scored from within the 40-metre arc worth one point. A goal would be worth four points. Converted 45s would continue to be worth one point. The benefits of the two-point scoring arc are twofold. Firstly, it encourages longrange shooting, a wonderful skill which we are seeing less and less of in the modern game. Secondly, more shots from distance will force packed defences to press slightly higher, potentially opening up gaps closer to goal. Increasing the value of a goal to four points goes hand in hand with the introduction of the arc as it encourages attacking teams to maintain an inside threat rather than simply picking off scores from distance.

KICKOUTS

Kickouts would be taken from the 20-metre line and must go beyond the 40-metre arc.

I’m not sure about this one. I don’t think short kickouts are as detrimental to the game as some traditionalists seem to, especially if the limits on passing to the goalkeeper are brought in…

Gavin and co. are talking about a revolution

LIMITS ON PASSING TO THE GOALKEEPER

A player may only pass the ball to their goalkeeper if both they and the goalkeeper are inside the large rectangle or if the goalkeeper has advanced beyond their own 65-yard line. The goalkeeper can still move up the field to challenge the opposition kickout or attempt to intercept a pass from the opposition.

If introduced, this, in my opinion, will fundamentally change the game for the better. One of the biggest scourges of the modern game is long, pointless, uninterrupted periods of nothing possession, passing the ball back and forth across the pitch as the opposition sit back and refuse to press. And one of the main reasons this happens is the team with the ball always has an extra man: the goalkeeper. Removing the keeper as an easy outlet will inevitably lead to more gegenpressing, more tackles, more turnovers, and more excitement. It could be as revolutionary as the back pass rule was in soccer.

SOLO AND GO

A player who is fouled has the option of continuing play by taking a ‘solo and go’ rather than pausing play to take a free. It doesn’t have to be the player who is fouled that takes the ‘solo and go’. Inspired by the ‘tap and go’ in rugby, this is a terrific idea aimed at speeding up the game. A definite ‘yes’ for me.

ADVANCED MARK

You can claim an offensive mark if you field a ball inside the 20-metre line that has been kicked from outside the 45-metre line. But, rather than stop and claim the mark, players can instead continue to play and attempt to score from open play. The referee plays advantage and if none accrues then the ball is brought back for the mark. Rather than limit an advantage to five seconds, consideration is being given to allowing referees to give advantage for as long as there is positive momentum.

While personally I would prefer if they ditched the advanced mark entirely, this is a slight improvement (although maybe I wouldn’t be saying that if I was a corner back).

THREE UP/THREE BACK

This rule enhancement under consideration would oblige both teams to always

have a minimum of three players inside each 65-yard line. If a defending player retreats beyond the ’65 to give his team a numerical advantage then they would concede a free on their own 13-metre line. If a player carries the ball past their own ’65 and leaves less than three teammates behind them then a free is given to the opposition at the point where they crossed the line.

This is a big one and arguably the most ambitious of the FRC’s proposals. The merits are obvious. Fewer defenders behind the ball, more space for forwards, and more opportunities for counter-at-

tacks. The practicalities are the worry here. Will the officials be able to keep track of the bodies? If it works it will be a total game-changer. There are several other “smaller” proposals being trialled and tabled, such as the introduction of a hooter, an NFL-style overtime showdown, and vanishing foam for referees to mark the location of frees. Overall, the ideas seem bold and positive. They may not all get the green light at Special Congress on November 30 but, for the first time in a while, I’m feeling optimistic about the future of Gaelic football.

Eamonn Fitzgerald chats to All-Irelandwinning Kerry footballer

Kayleigh Cronin

She doesn’t have to outline her own CV, a CV that is laced with achievements at the highest level in sport, more particularly LGFA. Here are just some highlights. An All-Star in 2022, a National League Division 1 title in 2023, an All-Ireland in 2024 and the Laoch na hImeartha (Hero of the Game) award in the final. She was recently awarded the Player of the Month for August and is a shoo-in for another AllStar before Christmas.

Not only does Kayleigh Cronin deliver on the playing field she is also a deep thinker on the meaning and value of sport for all. She has just finished another training session when I interview her.

‘Sport is

Kayleigh, accolades galore with the LGFA, but it was a strange turn of fortune which brought you into ladies' football.

Sport has always been my central focus. Growing up I was like most young sports people sampling all sports, and that’s how it should be until you find the one that suits you. I loved football, basketball, and soccer but athletics became my prime sport, particularly the discus. I concentrated on that until I got a shoulder injury which meant I couldn’t throw during that summer. I took the summer off between my third year and fourth year in college and then re-joined football with Dr Crokes. We had great craic and friend-

ship playing at junior level and Division 3 but we improved all the time and now Crokes is the only club competing in the Kerry senior championships in men’s football, LGFA and senior hurling. Mind you, I missed many of their games because of my involvement with Kerry. I was called into the Kerry panel within a year of switching from the discus. When I joined the team in 2019 it took a while but we progressed to become one of the top sides. Sport was - and is - in my DNA so when I went to DCU for college, I specialised in Athletic Therapy in Training. After graduating I did a Masters in Sports Performance at UL.

In those early days, would it be fair to say that the ladies were very much the poor relation in the male-dominated club and intercounty scene?

We certainly were and there was hassle about pitch availability for training and

games. The support that men's teams were getting regarding travel expenses, meal allowances, access to physio and many more things were not the same as what we got on the ladies' side. Yet we were putting as much effort and commitment into training as the men. We got little recognition but thankfully that has improved a lot and there are plans in place for it to continue to improve.

I attended Kerry’s first league game of 2023 versus the Dubs in Parnell Park and the LGFA made its protests, there and on other occasions.

The LGFA is 50 years old while the GAA goes back to 1884 and certainly playing football was a no-no for women at that time. However, there is a huge improvement in these matters. The Kerry County Board is supportive but, in some clubs, the LGFA section is not taken as seriously as it should be, and they do not get fair play in basics such as availability of the club pitches. I’m fortunate to be a member of Dr Crokes. Naturally, the senior men’s football side is the flagship as one would expect but ladies' football is promoted and supported by enlightened leadership and vision by the officers and executive. We have come all the way through from Division 3 to Division 1 in the league and from junior to senior in the championship. Our next game is on Sunday next when we meet Castleisland Desmonds in the County Championship semi-final.

There is a great euphoria in Kerry since you won the All-Ireland final, lifting the Brendan Martin Cup. Was it compensation for the men’s disappointing loss to Armagh?

I wouldn’t say it's compensation, especially as Kerry people want the Sam Maguire. But you saw the turnout at the Glebe Car Park when we came home from Croke Park with the cup and it has been a series of whirlwind receptions all over the county to visit the clubs of our players. We do realise, of course, that much and all as Kerry supports the men, we are also big supporters of the men and even though they didn’t win this year, they will be fully determined to win the Sam Maguire again in the near future. Wearers of the green and gold have such great pride in the colours.

Glory in Croke Park in 2024 but for you it was a bitter disappointment losing to

in my DNA’

Meath in 2022 and Dublin in 2023… We played so far below par in 2022 and 2023. Meath was bad but we felt we had learnt a lot, so losing to Dublin was a bitter memory which led to a lot of soul-searching. In January 2024 when Darragh (Long) and Declan (Quill) made a big sacrifice with their commitments to young families, we all bought into the one focus to win the All-Ireland for the first time in 31 years. That was a famine when you look at the LGFA records and see in the past Kerry won nine out of ten All-Irelands, led by the great Mary Jo Curran.

Why do you rate the joint managers so highly?

Their commitment is unbelievable and even in the cold, wintry months they cajoled us into doing intense early season preparation. They built up solid personal relationships with each individual player. We were all respected whether we were young, new or experienced. Both had the people skills to get the best out of players. There were no prima donnas. Everyone worked selflessly for the greater good of the team to help us collectively reach our goal. It was just one united happy family moulded by Declan and Darragh.

Last week you attended the John McCarthy AI Summer School in the RDI Hub, Killorglin along with your Kerry colleague Síofra O’Shea, Paudie Clifford and Cian O’Neill, the much-travelled coach who is back with Kerry again. Can you see AI being used to assist in winning an All-Ireland?

One thing is for sure, AI is here to stay and it will affect all aspects of our lives. Sports managers are always looking for an added advantage to secure victory. There are advances in technology, so managers and players look to technology. The GPS tracker is an obvious tool to provide useful data to managers.

How does GPS work?

The GPS slips into a vest in the jersey and tracks you, providing a lot of useful information to be used by the manager such as distance travelled, total sprints made, max speed and much more during training or in a game.

How far would a player travel in a game as recorded by the GPS?

A full back where I play for Kerry will run approximately 6-8km per game. The half backs, midfield and half forwards would average anywhere up to 10km, and sometimes even more. It is also very use-

ful in diagnosing someone’s rehab coming back from injury and their readiness to play. Take Síofra for example. When she returned after she did her cruciate the GPS was able to inform the physios and the S&Cs of vital data like total distance, was she compensating for rehabbing her leg by pushing off the good leg more than the injured leg, how many sprints she made from the left and the right etc. Based on the cumulative data they were able to design a suitable gradual return to training and maybe start with just 15 minutes of a game.

Having said all that, technology must not be allowed to take key elements out of the game, the emotions, pride in wearing the Kerry jersey and the determination and the individual brilliance of the players.

Name some heroes in sports you admire.

LeBron James in basketball, Serena Williams in tennis, Lionel Messi and Steven Gerrard in soccer, Mary Jo in ladies’ football and Gooch, of course, a brilliant skilful player from my own club.

I realise that at 27 there are many more years in your playing career but when you do retire how are you going to adapt to an ‘ordinary’ life? No more playing in front of big crowds at Croke Park. How will you come down from that high?

I’ll have to start thinking about it as I push on. I’d love to help out in such areas as S&C and coaching in ladies' football in the county. I’ll have more time to help the young girls and boys learn the skills of the game and be a mentor for the emerging

young girls in the Crokes Saturday morning academy. I would love to be involved with Kerry LGFA at some stage down the line, especially in the area of S&C, where my qualifications lie, or coaching. More and more girls are so enthusiastic about ladies’ football and I will be supporting that as well by going to as many games as I possibly can. I will have an opportunity to support more local teams in other sports too, such as basketball and soccer. Kayleigh, Kerry’s brightest star in a star-studded Kerry LGFA team of All-Ireland winners, we have so much more to talk about such as the slow progress in the unifying process of the GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association. We will get back to that topic another time, no doubt.

All the best, Eamonn.

History made at enjoyable Beaufort President’s Day

While all the excitement of the final day of the Solheim Cup was being played out in Virginia on Sunday last, Beaufort Golf Club was also building up to a very entertaining President’s Day.

History was being made at Beaufort GC as it was the first time in 29 years that there would be a female president presiding over the day. Irene McCarthy took up golf in 1995 and through work commitments took up a position with the Department of Justice in Killarney and joined Beaufort Golf Club.

Having worn many hats throughout the years from Lady Captain to many various roles on the committee, it was richly deserved that Irene should become the first female President of the Club. Irene described being chosen as President as a great honour and privilege. She is delighted to see the men’s and ladies’ clubs both thriving at Beaufort GC. The increase in membership and the good camaraderie that is at the heart of Beaufort GC makes it even more special to be the President in 2024.

Irene also commented on the vast improvement in the course and club house facilities in the recent years by the current management. The course is in fantastic condition at the moment and Tadhg Clifford and his staff deserve every bit of

credit for the tremendous work they do to have the course and the greens in particular in the superb condition they are. It was tremendous to see President Irene at the golf club early on Sunday morning welcoming her golfers and having a cup of tea and a chat with everyone before they teed off.

President Irene thanked all the ladies for their support not only yesterday but in the previous couple of years as she fought a tough battle in overcoming cancer. She was grateful for all the kind messages, cards and well wishes she received. Irene also thanked the ladies who showed up for her prizegiving, even the ladies that didn’t participate in the golf. There was a great turnout for the 18-hole stroke play competition. All the ladies enjoyed some top-quality food in the clubhouse after the golf and then President Irene’s prizegiving.

The worthy winner, with a three-stroke lead over her nearest competitor, was the very talented Gráinne McShortall. Grainne has been playing golf for only a few years now and her handicap seems to be coming down all the time and this is due to the dedication and time she dedicates to her golf.

As the sun settled in Beaufort on Sunday evening it’s fair to say that the ladies had a wonderful President’s Day.

Paul’s to start Super League adventure with home stretch

St Paul’s will have three home matches in the opening month of the 2024/25 Women’s Super League as the Killarney club hope to hit the ground running at the highest level of Irish basketball.

Paul’s earned promotion to the top table after a terrific showing in Division 1 last season but tougher tests await this time around, starting with a home game against Liffey Celtics on Saturday, October 5.

Cork powerhouses Glanmire will take advantage of the newly improved N22 the following Saturday while Killester will be in town on the October Bank Holiday weekend. The only away fixture James Fleming's side will have in the first month will be in Brunell.

New signings Megan Ormiston and Gracen Kerr have landed safely in Ireland and they will be looking to settle seamlessly into their new surroundings. Ormiston, standing at 6’3”, can play in both the four and five positions with her power under the boards one of her best assets. Kerr, who hails from Connecticut, is a quicksilver point guard, adept at evading the hard press and always looking to bring her teammates into the game.

They will link up with Deirdre Geaney who has ample previous experience with both Tralee and Castleisland and the assiduous Paris McCarthy who will join the fold upon her return from Australia. Also signed up is Anja Marinkovic who had a star-studded college career with Detroit Mercy and Florida Gulf Coast University, and Simone O’Shea who is crossing the county bounds, bringing with her title-winning experience from Glanmire in 2023.

The squad will, of course, feature the bulk of the side that gained promotion so impressively last season, including Denise Dunlea, Lynn Jones, Leah McMahon, Rheanne O'Shea, Meabh Barry, Lorraine Scanlon and Síofra O’Shea.

The team is once again generously sponsored by Utility Trust and there are a couple of notable additions to the camp. Shane Horgan will be the assistant coach, a man who will be remembered as a topclass performer for St Paul’s at National League level. The same goes for Brian Clarke who will assist as an analyst, helping the team prepare for their next opponent. Coach Fleming will be keen to make St Paul’s as competitive as possible, with the ever-dependable Christina Bartlett pulling the strings backstage.

NEWCOMERS: American players Gracen Kerr and Megan Ormiston are linking up with St Paul's for the 2024/25 Super League season.

90-year-old golfer Seán captures Tim O’Shea Cup

Seán ‘The Castle’ O'Donoghue was an easy winner of the recent Tim O'Shea Perpetual Cup for seniors played at Mahony’s Point, Killarney.

Reaching a handicap of seven and later becoming the captain of the Strandhill, the talented player always retained his membership with Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and has happy memories of playing in fourballs with the late Jim Leacy and Patie O'Connor. Tim Brosnan made up the quartet.

The team showed great resilience, especially after being reduced to 10 men, to secure the win. A big thank you to all the parents who travelled to support the team. Next up, the team will face Ballingarry at home in the next round.

U14 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 5-2 Inter Kenmare. We started in the front foot and created some early chances but were denied by the Kenmare goalkeeper with some super saves. We did break the deadlock in the 8 minute when Rory Moynihan finished from close range after great pressure from Nathan Mulcahey forced a mistake. Second half, our boys put in a stellar performance with Sean Quill scoring a perfect hat-trick. First with his left, a header assisted from a brilliant Robert Murphy cross, and a right footed finish to put us well in control. We didn't have it all own way. Kenmare fought back and scored 2 quick goals to give the visitors a glimmer of hope. But the 3 points were secured with our fifth goal from Shea Driver. An unstoppable strike from 25 yards into the top corner.

Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR LADIES: The Senior Ladies qualified for the last four of the Bons Secours Junior B Championship with a hardearned win over Kerins O’Rahillys in Direen on Sunday afternoon. A goal from the throw in from Keri-Ann Hanrahan was soon followed by points from Andrea Murphy and Eve Coffey as it took O’Rahillys seventeen minutes to get on the scoreboard. When they did, they hit four in twelve minutes with an Orianne McGillycuddy goal sandwiched in between. In a carbon copy of the first half Ciara Randles struck for a goal early in the second but the Rahillys responded, kick starting their best period in the game. It took an Andrea Murphy goal at the three quarters stage to keep them at bay, with five points between the side, 4-4 to 1-8. Lauren Carey stretched the lead but again Rahillys whittled it down to a one score game, 4-5 to

2-8, heading down the stretch. A strong rearguard action kept the back door locked as two further points from Lauren minded the gap, as the final scoreline read 4-7 to 2-10. The Ladies now face Annascaul/Castlegregory in the semifinal this Sunday down west.

U10 GIRLS: Our U10s entertained Kilcummin in Go Games in Direen on Saturday morning. Both games were played in a good competitive spirit with the odd friendly bumps exchanged. To top off the evening, the girls had a drop-in visit from Kerry All Ireland medal winners Lorraine Scanlon and Siofra O'Shea to offer some encouragement and advice and pose for some photos. Thanks to Spa for hosting us, Sharon O’Grady, for organising the game, our supporters, and all who helped out in the evening.

Dr Crokes GAA

SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP :Dr. Crokes 1:14 Kenmare 2:07. Fresh from winning the Club Championship, we got our we got our County Championship campaign underway with a good win away to Kenmare on Saturday. We opened the scoring in the first minute through a Tony Brosnan free, having worked hard to turn over the ball, having lost the throw in. Kenmare replied a minute later, with their first score of the game, a goal from Seánie O'Shea. Shane Murphy had made a brilliant save to firstly deny the goal, but it was the rebound that found the back of the net. Keeping our opposition scoreless for the next 18 minutes we clocked up some fine points, leaving the scoreboard reading 4 points to 1 goal after 19 minutes. It was in the 27th minutes of the game that Tony Brosnan was brought down inside the small square and converted from the penalty spot to give us a 1:05 to 1:03 lead at the break. The second half was as entertaining as the first with both teams trading points and Shane Murphy pulling off some fantastic saves to keep us leading for the entire half. Team: Jayden Tynan, Jack Fogarty, Darragh Brosnan, Luke Daly, Gavin Morrissey, Oisin O’Leary, Andy Lowin, Shane McSweeney, Colm Kelleher, Padraigh Moynihan, Mikey O’Shea, Cian Lynch, Aaron Buckley, Richie O’Connor, Sean Doolan. Fossa GAA

MOLYNEAUX CUP: Fossa upped the ante at the start of the second half and were on level terms after two minutes with a Tadgh O’Shea free and a super point from Eoin Talbot. Driven forward by the impressive Cian and Ruari Doyle, the game ebbed and flowed and the lead changed hands a few times. In the 13th minute Glenflesk struck for a crucial score when they broke quickly and scored their second goal. Our midfield and forwards worked their socks off but couldn’t break down a tight Glenflesk rearguard to get the goal needed, points from Ruari Doyle and Killian Buckley weren’t enough, and the game finished in a two-point defeat on a score of 2-12 to 0-16.

U15 BOYS: Fossa U15 B team made the short trip to Listry to play Keel/Listry B’s in the East Kerry Division 3B final. In blustery conditions and against the wind the Fossa boys started brightly and found themselves 1-4 to 0-1 to the good with points coming from Sam O’Leary, Josh Salvador, Ross O’Gorman and Luke Rennie, Donnacha Vaughan scoring the all-important goal. Keel/Listry stormed back into the game and aided by the strong breeze kicked 6 points without

reply to leave the scoreline level at half time, 1-4 to 0-7. Jake Dunlea, Gerry Moroney and Luke Clancy were putting in a great shift around the middle while Dara Whelton, Donnacha O’Sullivan and Kevin Breen had the defence well marshalled. Fossa now playing with the breeze in the second half scored two early goals from Eoin Bennett and Donnacha Vaughan to re-establish the lead. Keel/Listry laid siege on the Fossa defence, but the boys held strong through some excellent defending by Paddy Myers, Oisin Cryan and captain Morgan O’Brien, who kept their opponents to just two frees in that period. The fresh legs of Ben O’Sullivan, Johnny Myers, Marc Sheehan and Ben Kavanagh kept Fossa on the front foot with Eoin Bennett hitting the net again and the boys followed up with two points from Donnacha Vaughan and Gerry Moroney. Keel/ Listry added a late goal, but the introduction of Mateusz Golebicki, Shea Driver, Ross Cronin and Charlie O’Meara ensured Fossa ran out winners on a full-time score of 4-6 to 1-9, a result that capped off a fine EK League campaign for the boys. A big thanks to Brendan Brosnan for his outstanding refereeing during the match. Glenflesk GAA

Killarney Camogie Club

UNDER 13: Congratulations to our Under 13 girls who won the Shield Final at the Aoibheann Duffy Memorial Blitz in Kilmoyley last Saturday! 6 group games were played, with 3 wins (over Sliabh Luachra, Abbeykillix & Cillard) and 3 losses (to Tralee, Causeway & Ballyduff). This saw us progress to the Shield Final, again playing Cillard. The final performance at the end of the day was really worthwhile. We are so proud of all the incredible performances at the Aoibheann Duffy Memorial Blitz. The shield final showed all the grit and talent that this team possess. The second-half performance to hold the opposition scoreless, battling against the wind, was amazing. Congratulations to Caoimhe on receiving the Player of the Match Award. All the girls played with heart, passion, and skill - Killarney Camogie Club certainly has a bright future! It just shows the work and dedication that they all have put in this year - please keep up the practice/training! Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

ROYAL OAK: Becoming a grandad again on Saturday night did not deflect Steve Cambell one bit, in fact it must have spurred him on to win the Royal Oak Cup on Sunday in emphatic style! Steve took top honours in the clubs main competition for 2024, a lovely catch of 6 trout holding off the chasing competition on the day. A Grand total of 32 anglers took to the water and the top 10 places were allocated as follows: 1) Steve Cambell, 2) Anthony Griffin, 3) Liam Buckley, 4) Aidan O’Callaghan, 5) Dave Mears and Tom Dennehy, 7) Eamonn O’Leary, 8) Gerry McGuinness, 9) Brendan Kelleher, 10) Boris Uzik/Malcom O’Brien/Owen Casey. Heaviest Trout fell to the rod of Tom Dennehy. Best Boat on the day, winning the Paddy Kelly Cup, was the dynamic duo of Liam Buckley on the tiller and Anthony Griffin riding shotgun in the bow. The winning club team consisted of Steve Cambell, Owen Casey and Anthony O’Connor. Our winning sponsor team this year, winning the Michael Casey Memorial Cup, was Laois Welding Services comprising of Steve Cambell, Frank O’Sullivan and Tom Ankatell. The points allocation post the competition see's Steve Cambell retaining his lead, now on 41 points, chased within catching distance by Dave Mears on 35.5 and Anthony Griffin on 34.5 points - an upset in the fishing for the Tom Bambury Trophy could turn it on its head yet! Our final outing for 2024, namely the Tom Bambury Memorial Trophy, takes place on the 06th of October.
