Ballydribeen residents living in fear due to anti-social behaviour

Residents in the Ballydribeen are living in fear as a result of increased anti-social behaviour in the estate.

Several serious incidents in the estate have resulted in several Garda visits in the last week.

Local councillor Martin Grady told the Killarney Advertiser that residents are “living in fear” as a result of very serious incidents in the last week alone.

One house in the estate was badly damaged when fire crackers were placed inside a letter box.

Another house had its windows smashed in over the weekend.

“It’s a major problem,” added Grady after meeting residents there earlier this week. One of the most serious incidents occurred on Tuesday night.

A passing motorists had a rock thrown at his car while driving along the bypass whch is adjacent to the estate.

“Travelling home tonight, at 11.05pm on the Killarney side of the bypass our car was hit by a rock – not a pebble – from the Ballydribeen side, which hit the passenger door.

“It was centimetres away from hitting the window where my father, who is visually impaired, was sitting.

“This could have caused catastrophic permanent injury to him.

“The Killarney Garda were on the scene within three minutes.

“They can’t be patrolling the bypass all night.

“It comes down to parenting. You should know where your children are at this hour and be able to teach them what’s funny and what can ruin a person’s life or cause a fatal crash.“

Gardai investigating church theft release image of suspect

Footage of a man stealing money from a Killarney church has featured on RTE’s Crimeline.

The footage relates to a man who stole around €80 on December 21 last year.

It shows him entering the Franciscan Friary at around 6pm on the day in question and using a tool to open two

No extension to Torc Waterfall carpark due to special location

Kerry County Council’s hands are tied when it comes to providing extra car parking spaces at Torc Waterfall.

Clllr Maura Healy Rae raised the issue at a recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District.

She is concerned that the popularity of the tourist attraction is leading to overcrowding and as a result causing danger to road users.

She said: Due to the inadequate size of the car park and its failure to cater for all the visitors and locals who use this special amenity, cars are being parked on the

public road which is limiting the roadway for passing vehicles, jarveys, pedestrians and cyclists and therefore, leaving all of them in a perilous situation. Action must be taken ahead of the next tourist season before a fatality occurs.

The car park falls under the remit of the National Parks and Wildlife Service and is in an Special Area of Conservation.

“The NPWS informed Kerry County Council that given its location within an SAC, there is no potential to increase the size of the carpark. Kerry County Council will liaise with the NPWS and will again highlight this issue with them.”

Killarney author part of national campaign to promote children’s books

Traffic management at St Oliver’s School

A new traffic management plan to alleviate congestion at St Oliver’s School in Ballycasheen will go ahead.

There have been numerous calls by elected members of Killarney Municipal District to do something to solve the chronic traffic problems at the school during pickup and drop-off times.

Recently retired councillor Donal Grady first highlighted the issue in 2022. His replacement in the council chamber, his son Martin, and Niall Kelleher raised the issue again at the most-recent Killarney Municipal District meeting.

An council official said: “2022 the Killarney MD Office had extensive pre-planning discussions with representatives

of St. Oliver's School in relation to traffic generated by the school.

In March 2023, St. Oliver's National School received planning approval for the construction of new boundary treatment to the Rookery Road, incorporating a one-way vehicular set down provision, revised pedestrian facilities and the relocation of parking facilities.

It is expected that once completed, this design will allow for improved traffic flow and will alleviate congestion, while maximising the safety of the vulnerable road user.”

Killarney author Olivia Hope, author of 'Be Wild Little One', is among a group of Internationally celebrated authors and illustrators behind a new initiative to champion children’s books written by those living and working in Ireland.

This week in O’Mahony’s Bookshop, Tralee Olivia organised a meet up with fellow Kerry writers Emma Larkin, Anna McQuinn and Katie O’Donoghue to highlight the range of Irish titles available to young readers.

Olivia said: "as a nation we are incredibly supportive of Irish adult fiction, and our bestselling lists reflect this, however it is very rare for an Irish children’s book author or illustrator to feature in the equivalent children’s best seller list, which are usually UK and US domain."

Children’s author and Laureate na nÓg, Patricia Forde added: “Ireland now has a wonderful canon of literature for children in both English and Irish. We owe

it to our young people to promote that work and to make sure that they are aware of books that are written and illustrated here. We all need to see ourselves and our culture in the books that we read, and our writers and illustrators need our support to continue making that work.”

Children’s Books Ireland CEO Elaina Ryan said: “There’s much deserved celebration of the four Irish authors longlisted for the Booker Prize at the moment but what went by with little fanfare earlier this year, was the longlisting or shortlisting of two Irish authors and illustrators and an Irish publisher for the prestigious Yoto Carnegie Medals which recognises work created for children and young people. Ireland’s literary excellence is as obvious in our books for young readers as it is in those for adults, and they are equally worthy of our praise and support.”

Ring of Kerry night time road closures to start in October

Essential embankment repairs at Gleensk on the N70 Ring of Kerry road will be carried out overnight from 24 October to 15 December, over a shorter timeframe than previously advertised.

Night-time closures will apply from 8pm to 7am from Monday night to Friday night each week. Diversions will be in place and clearly signposted. The essential works are being carried out at night-time to minimise disruption for road users.

Excitement mounts ahead of new store opening

Excitement is mounting in Killarney ahead of the official opening of an eagerly awaited new store by one of the major league players in the sports fashion retail industry.

A bumper crowd is expected to turn out at Killarney Outlet Centre for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for global leisurewear style giant JD Outlet. The big event is scheduled for Saturday, October 7 at 10.00am – and you just never know who might be there.

Access to the Old Weir Bridge at Dinis Cottage Killarney National Park will be restricted for the rest of the year.

This is to facilitate important restoration work. The Old Weir Bridge is believed to date back to the sixteenth century. The historical twin arch stone bridge is synonymous with the “Meeting of the Waters” where the famous Killarney three

lakes meet, joining the Upper Lake, Muckross Lake and Lough Leane. Travelling by boat or kayak, ‘shooting the rapids’ down the Old Weir Bridge is considered the highlight of the Gap of Dunloe tour. The bridge is of enormous

architectural value - having survived the devastating floods in 1867 when Dinis Cottage was washed away. The National Parks and Wildlife Service and Killarney National Park wish to apologise for the inconvenience.

Tributes to Damien Fleming following tragic passing

Tributes have been paid to Kerry co-driver Damien Fleming who lost his life while competing in the Clare Rally on Sunday.

The Kilcummin man, 37, was one of Kerry’s leading co-drivers.

He has competed in over 150 events since he started in 2006.

Highlights include winning the Banna Beach Resort Kerry Winter Rally alongside Cavan’s Stephen McCann in a Mitsubishi Lancer E9 in 2015.

He was also the inaugural Kingdom of Kerry Rally champion in 2018 – the only county rally championship in Ireland. Championship sponsor and co-founder Mike Moriarty of Central Car Sales in Farranfore said:

“This was something we thought up and Kerry Motor Club and Killarney and District Motor Club all came in behind it. It was because of people like Damien Fleming that the championship is a tremendous success. He is the first name on that trophy, many more have come behind him but he will always be the first name on that trophy.”

Fleming, although based in Dublin, was a member of Killarney and District Motor Club.

Club chairman Thomas Randles paid tribute to his clubmate.

“He was a sought-after navigator,” he said. “He was passionate about the sport

and was very well-known all over the country. He had a fierce passion and love for the sport. It is a very sad day for motorsport.”

Before the Clare event, his most recent rally as a co-driver was the Tour of the Sperrins in County Tyrone where he finished first in class alongside Gareth Deazley in a Ford Fiesta in May.

Fleming’s longest-running partnership was a with Monaghan’s Raymond Conlon. They competed on 14 rallies together between 2018 and last season.

The Toyota Corolla driver scored some of his best results with the Kerry co-driver by his side including class wins in the Rally of the Lakes and Killarney Historic Rally.

“He was a grand lad,” said Conlon. “His knowledge, especially in Killarney, and Moll’s Gap, made life easier in the car. Everyone thought that Kilcummin was my home stage, it was the way he called the notes. His attention to detail and the amount of homework he did before any event was unreal. He was big into country music too and often on a road section you would hear Big Tom blaring from the phone.”

As well as being an accomplished co-driver he was also a good driver.

He recently bought a Nissan Micra rally car that he used on Northern Ireland Rally Championship events.

These cars are considered budget, entry-level machines ideal for newcomers to the sport and Damien was so impressed with the Northern Ireland Rally Championship that he was trying to find

a way to introduce the class into Motorsport Ireland-sanctioned events. He was laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery, Kilcummin on Thursday morning following his funeral Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

On Wednesday evening Killarney and District Motor Club members were out in force to send off their club colleague. Members of the club and neighbouring clubs provided a guard of honour as the cortege left O’Shea’s Funeral Home on Damien’s final journey.

Motorsport Ireland, the sport’s governing body, has launched an investigation into the accident.

“Motorsport Ireland extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of

37-year-old Damien Fleming, who was fatally injured during a tragic accident while competing on the fourth stage of the 2023 Clare Stages Rally which was organised by Clare Motor Club,” said an official Motorsport Ireland statement.

“The thoughts of everyone at Motorsport Ireland and within the wider motorsport community are with the Fleming family, Clare Motor Club and the members of the motorsport community who were present at the scene who reacted so quickly and professionally to the incident. Motorsport Ireland will conduct a full investigation with the relevant authorities into Sunday's events to establish how this accident occurred.”

BUDGET 2024 PREVIEW

How is the government going to support households?

The annual budget is one of the highlights of the political calendar and the 2024 budget is going to be no different. Ireland (and Europe) is dealing with high inflation and households are battling with a cost of living crisis. Food prices are still relatively high, petrol and diesel at the pumps have once again increased and recent strikes relating to issues such as childcare costs show families and small businesses are struggling. There are some signs of easing on the energy front with many of the utility providers announcing price reductions of up to 20% on Gas and Electricity in recent weeks. This is welcome news after a report from the Commission for Regulation of Utilities this week released some stark figures on customers in arrears. 256,000 electricity customers (11%) – were in arrears, up 72,000 since January, while gas customers in arrears rose by 24,000 to 168,000.

Commenting on the report, the CRU said there had been a notable increase in the number of domestic electricity custom-

ers falling into arrears since the application of the final Government Emergency Electricity Credit in March. Despite the hardships currently being faced, the government managed to run up a huge surplus in tax receipts last year and they are looking at similar returns this year. So, while the exchequers purse has never being in better shape, Minister for Finance Michael McGrath needs to find the balance in this budget between supporting struggling households without adding inflationary pressures to the economy as warned by the European Central Bank. Here are 4 key areas the government will be looking to provide some relief for households.

COST OF LIVING

In last year’s budget the government introduced the rent tax credit to help households with the spiralling rent costs, but reports suggested that for whatever reason the uptake was low. Will the government look to tweak this

initiative, or come up with another way to put money back in to renters’ pockets? Another measure which has been floated is a re-introduction of mortgage interest relief for homeowners on high or variable rates.

HOUSING

There is likely to be some form of tax incentives for small landlords to remain in the rental market after we saw a mass exodus from the market following the introduction of the eviction ban last winter. The government remain tight lipped on the other measures that will address the single biggest crisis they face but they could look at tackling issues around the cost building material supplies, schemes to make it viable to convert commercial buildings to residential, more incentives to renovate derelict and vacant properties and it is likely we will see the extension of Help to Buy scheme.

TAX

There has been talks of protecting work-

ers who have received recent wage increases from entering the higher 40% income tax band as a result of wage inflation by adjusting income tax bands. The Universal Social Charge may also be looked at.

SOCIAL WELFARE AND LOW INCOME SUPPORTS

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has been calling for a minimum weekly adjustment of €27.50 in welfare rates in Budget 2024, in order to prevent an increase in poverty. It is unlikely the government will go that far considering that under budget 2023, the weekly pension and social welfare rates were increased by €12. Other measures the government will likely be considering is the Fuel Allowance, HAP and Rent Supplements, and SUSI supports for cash-strapped students.

Budget 2024 is to be delivered next Tuesday 10 October and we will have a full review in the Killarney Advertiser the following Friday.

Popular Autumn Talks are back

The first of the popular Killarney National Park ‘Autumn Talks Series’ 2023, will take place next Thursday night.

National Parks and Wildlife Services’ regional manager Eamonn Meskell will give a talk on the White Tailed eagle’s reintroduction to the locality in what is the first event of its kind since before the

pandemic.

The talks series commences on October 5 and continues for six weeks and takes place at Killarney House Auditorium Thursday nights at 8.00pm.

The talks series is free, seating is limited and it will also be live-streamed via the Killarney National Park Facebook page. Organiser of the Talks Series Padruig (Brac) O'Sullivan said: “It’s great to see the Autumn Talks Series return again, the response to this event is always so encouraging. People really engage with the

speakers and subjects. This year we have an added bonus with live-streaming on Killarney National Park Facebook page. Massive Park Road housing development given green light

A private developer has been given planning permission to build 249 new residential units at Upper Park Road.

The development, which will be built on a recently cleared site near An Post’s sorting office, will include a variety of properties from five-bed houses to single apartments, along with a crèche and

over 500 car spaces and over 300 bike spaces.

The development has been welcomed by local councillor Martin Grady.

“Killarney has a massive housing shortage so this is very positive. It will retain young families in the area, stimulating economic growth,” he said. “After 17 years of different planning applications it’s finally coming to fruition.”

Tara Cronin drives sheep across a London Bridge

An Aghadoe woman celebrated her Freedom of London by driving sheep over a city centre bridge on Sunday.

Tara Cronin was awarded the Freedom of the City of London last October. She earned her award thanks to her tireless charity work which includes her role as the Events and Fundraising Manager with ICAP, an Irish Mental Health charity in London.

She was the founder of the London-version of the Darkness into Light charity walk and is the former long-serving secretary of the Kerry Association. She is also a board member of the Irish Women’s Network.

In 1835 eligibility for the freedom of the city was extended to anyone who lived in, worked in or had a strong connection to London.

These days it is largely ceremonial and bestowed upon people in recognition for their personal achievements and charita-

ble work.

One of the rights connected with the award is permission to herd sheep over Southwark Bridge in the city and Tara exercised that right on Sunday.

She was joined on the day by her parents Jerry and Margaret and brother Eoghan and a group of close friends.

“What an amazing weekend celebrating my Freedom of the City of London Sheep Drive.

Thank you to all my family and friends who celebrated with me albeit very last minute. Huge thanks to Vince Dignam and Alderman Vincent Keaveny for making this all happen,” she said.

“Lots of laughs and memories made. It was also wonderful to be able to celebrate Dad's birthday in style.”

Valentia Coastguard featured in new TG4 series

Ireland's mountains, seas and coastline provide an irresistible draw for holiday makers, hikers and those seeking adventure.

But things can go wrong in the blink of an eye. In this brand-new series for TG4, we follow the brave men and women of the Irish coastguard, mountain rescue teams and community rescue boats across Ireland.

The everyday heroes who drop everything to come to the aid of people in need across Ireland at sea, on the ground and in the air.

The programme follows the teams as they put themselves through rigorous training, join them at community events and fundraisers and hold our breath as they perform daring rescues around the country.

In the first episode, viewers meet the team at Valentia Coastguard, the oldest station in the country.

In Kerry, we follow the Banna Coastguard team who are keeping the waters of this beach safe, and follow some willing volunteers as they fundraise much needed funds for this service at the Ring of Kerry Cycle.

Since Covid the mostly voluntary rescue teams are now busy all year round. Their training, equipment and rate of call outs is of a very professional standard. They are hugely committed people, rooted in their communities, ready to search and rescue at a minutes’ notice.

Over the Summer and early Autumn of 2022, teams from Big Mountain Productions followed the men and women of the Irish Coast Guard, our mountain

rescue teams and community rescue boats across Ireland.

Having access to the coastguard co-ordination centre in Valentia we follow one of the four full time Coast Guard rescue helicopters based around the country - R118 stationed in Strandhill, Sligo.

At the heart of the series is the extraordinary commitment and work of volunteers the length and breath of Ireland. These men and women make up the unpaid coast guard units along our coast from Malin to Greenore, the mountain rescue teams to the community inshore lifeboats.

The 8-part series, Tarrthálaithe na hÉireann, starts on October 5.

Ryanair cut schedules due to Boeing delivery delays

Ryanair announced several cuts to their winter schedule due to Boeing delivery delays.

A statement by Ryanair said in that it had expected to receive 27 aircraft between September and December. But due to production delays it now expects to receive only 14 aircraft between October and December.

Flight cancellations will take effect from the end of October and will be communicated to all affected passengers by email over the coming days, Ryanair said. "At this early date, we do not expect these delivery delays will materially affect our full year traffic target of 183.5 million,” group chief executive Michael O'Leary said.

"But if the delays worsen or extend further into the January to March 2024 period, we may have to revisit this figure and possibly adjust it slightly downward," he added.

The budget airline said it will cut two aircraft from those based at Dublin Airport, three from Charleroi airport in Belgium, and five from Italian airports, including Bergamo, Naples and Pisa. There will also be aircraft reductions at East Midlands airport in the UK, Porto in Portugal and Cologne, Germany, it said.

NASA astronaut Frank Rubio finally returns to earth

Record-breaking NASA astronaut Frank Rubio has finally returned to Earth, feeling the pull of the planet’s gravity for the first time in more than a year.

Rubio and his two Russian cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin parachuted to a landing in Kazakhstan aboard the Russian capsule on Wednesday.

The crew’s arrival marked the end of a

long, and unexpected, journey for Rubio, who had been scheduled to spend only six months aboard the International Space Station. He instead spent a total of 371 days in space following the discovery of a coolant leak coming from his original ride while docked to the orbiting outpost delaying his return. Rubio’s stay set a new record for the longest a US astronaut has ever spent in microgravity and the first American to log an entire calendar year in orbit.

2CV celebrates 75 years

The Citroen 2CV has been out of production for some time, however, it’s still one of the most recognizable cars of all time, and this year celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Citroen started its ‘Toute Petite Voiture’ or very small car project in the mid-1930s and was due to unveil the finished car at the 1939 Paris Motor Show. Had it not been for the outbreak of WWII, that milestone would have been a few years back. The 2CV eventually made its debut at the Paris show in 1948 packing a 375 cc, aircooled flat-twin developing just 9 hp with a top speed of 50 kmh, which sounds mad in today’s terms, but post WWll thousands of low-income French families were finally able to realize their dream of car ownership.

Speed and power aside, demand was off the scale because of its clever and versatile design.

5 tonnes of litter were removed from Kerry Beaches

Nationwide, 7,700 incredible volunteers joined forces to collect an overall 46 tonnes of litter, and to take part in a worldwide citizen science project.

To mark Sustainable Development Goal Week, Clean Coasts wants to celebrate the efforts of volunteers in County Kerry working towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, not only in September but throughout the whole summer.

On Wednesday, in an extraordinary display of environmental stewardship and community spirit, 7,700 Clean Coasts volunteers rolled up their sleeves and removed a staggering over 46 tonnes of litter all across the country as part of the Big Beach Clean.

In County Kerry, 31 groups and over 840 volunteers removed an estimated 5 tonnes of marine litter. Clean-ups happened in various locations.

Among them, 43 volunteers from Banna Coastcare were joined by Kerry Islamic Outreach Society and they hosted their Big Beach Clean event on Banna Beach, removing 17 full bags of litter, from both the beach area and the car parks. In addition, the group re-

moved a mattress, some lobster crates and contents of a compost bin. Finally, volunteers filled in marine litter data cards to join the Ocean Conservancy International Coastal Cleanup citizen science project. The event was also a celebration of Banna Rescue 40th anniversary.

Clean Coasts group Inch Beach Park Run also joined the Big Beach Clean with a litter picking event that marked the group’s 200th clean-up.

Finally, Maharees Conservation Association hosted a Big Beach Clean cleanup getting over 6km of their beaches cleaned as part of the event, at least 22 volunteers collecting at least 15 full bags and some large unbaggable items. The group also split up to fill in the marine litter data cards as part of Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup survey.

The Big Beach Clean is part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) organised by the Ocean Conservancy, and it entails an annual call-to-action for individuals, families, and communities to join forces to carry out a clean-up at the end of the bathing season and join a worldwide citizen science project.

The 2CV evolved over the years, gaining a little more power and comfort, while still always remaining slow and basic. Killarney has played host to many visiting 2CV adventurers, with this group visiting in 2022, and wherever you may go on holidays you'll most likely see one going about its business with its loyal owner. Not a car you would associate with motorsport - however, the first 2CV 24hr race was held in 1990 at Mondello Park, and remained at the circuit until 2003 when it moved to the UK.

To celebrate the anniversary Citroen has produced eight portraits of noteworthy 2CVs, including a 2CV A, one of 250 prototypes built in 1939 for the Motor Show, a 1950 2CV A Berline identical to the one unveiled at the 1948 show, and one of the twin-engined Saharas. It’s also putting together a special display of 75 different 2CVs at the Conservatoire Citroën in Aulnay-sous-Bois, France, on October 7, exactly 75 years after the 1948 debut.

Six arrested:

MV Matthew under guard after record drugs seizure

Six men are being questioned in connection with the seizure of over two tonnes of cocaine aboard the cargo ship MV Matthew.

Gardaí say it is the largest seizure in the history of the State estimated at €157million followed a dramatic operation in which elite special forces descended from a helicopter onto the moving cargo vessel in rough weather.

Three men, an Iranian and two Ukrainians, were arrested as gardaí continued to interview the crew on the cargo ship.

A further three other men are being questioned at Wexford garda stations. The Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau are interviewing the 25 crew members who were on board.

MV Matthew is under armed guard in Cork harbour while the investigation continues.

It is reported that the gang planned to unload the consignment onto a waiting trawler. This plan fell apart after the trawler ran aground off the Wexford coast.

Aftermath of Storm Agnes

Storm Agnes ravaged the county on Wednesday causing widespread chaos and disruption.

The first major storm of the season brought flooding and power outages. Much of Killarney was without electricity for much of Wednesday morning. Roads in the Kilcummin area remained closed on Thursday.

From Altar Boy to Priesthood Joy

A conversation with FR. MARK MORIARTY

Mark is the son of wellknown Legion GAA stalwarts Brian and Marjie, and is a former student at St Brendan’s College. I would have known Mark growing up through these connections. I played for Legion and was a few years ahead of him in the Sem. At Legion matches or in the corridors of school is where we would usually cross paths.

He would probably admit himself he was quiet a shy lad growing up but without ever becoming very friendly with him, it was easy to tell he was one of the good guys.

Fast forward a decade or so and Mark is now a newly ordained priest serving in St. John’s parish in Tralee. His recent ordination was a long time in the making and I sat down with him this week to chat about his journey to priesthood, what his new vocation means to him, as well as getting his thoughts on faith, amongst other things.

It is clear from talking to Mark the Church played a big part in his life from a very early age, starting in primary school where he was an altar server in St. Mary’s Cathedral. He spoke with great fondness about those formative years and how he got to know some very good priests. It was here his interest in the church seemed to first develop.

As Mark says - “I wouldn’t say there was a particular ‘epiphany moment’ where I felt the Lord calling me to be a priest, but while in Maynooth I felt a gentle prompt in my heart, inviting me to give it a go and see if this was what the Lord wanted for me in my life”

It turned out priesthood is exactly where he was being called, and a decision he seems very content with now. Getting to this point took him seven long years of training in Maynooth. The elements that make up the formation of a priest can be broadly divided into what Mark describes as “the four main pillars of formation” - The human, the spiritual, the academic and the pastoral. Within these pillars students focus on various things throughout the year. This would include regular formation meetings with their director to help process their journey, monthly meetings with a spiritual director and several pastoral assignments and placements including visits to schools and nursing homes.

All of this was underpinned with the academic side of things. During the first few the years of study Mark would have focused primarily on philosophy and then on to theology which would focus more on the religious faith, practice, and experience. Mark admits it was sometimes challenging to juggle all these elements at once but that all of them played an important role in his formation.

THE ORDINATION

He was finally ordained in August of this year in St Mary’s Cathedral, back at the place his spiritual journey first began. Having had some weeks to reflect on the event he found two parts of that ceremony particularly moving.

DISCUSSING FAITH

I self-admittingly confessed to Mark that despite being a Catholic myself, faith was something that I struggled with.

“Maybe “we (the Church) have to take some of the blame for this, we teach young people a very ‘fluffy’ version of Jesus Christ which people may not relate to when there is actually so much more to him.”

Mark believes that many of the issues young people face nowadays are due to an absence of faith.

“I would say, don’t give up! The Lord has not given up on you and continuously desires to seek out your heart. Come and speak to someone, attend a prayer meeting and be introduced to others who only want to help us all on our faith journey. You are not on your own!”

I was keen to get his thoughts as a young (27) priest on a survey I read recently which highlighted that only 2.5% of priests in Ireland were under the age of 40 and whether he thought priest being allowed to marry might change that.

“I don’t think it would, nor do I think it could work in practical terms, the life of a priest requires devotion and if priests were to marry and maybe have children would we really be able to be there for our parishioners when they need us the most?”

Mark also pointed out that while the western world may not have as many young men becoming priests, there are a lot young people joining other religious orders.

“For example, the Dominicans are seeing great numbers of young men joining the order, they would exercise the same priesthood but they do not have to partake in parish ministry.”

“I think this is an exciting time for the Church. Our challenges and opportunities are intertwined in going back to basics and proclaiming the gospel in a life-giving way. It is the task of the Church to proclaim the gospel of Jesus to every heart, not to convince anyone that this message is true.”

NEW CHAPTER

STUDYING IN MAYNOOTH

After his leaving cert Mark attended Maynooth as a lay student. The plan was to study theology and history with the intention of doing secondary school teaching after. However, it was in the seminary in Maynooth where he got to know some of the other guys studying to be priests and it was their dedication and commitment to their vocation that sparked a real interest.

“It was a really beautiful ceremony. Lying prostrate on the floor while the congregation were asking the angels and saints to intercede for me was a great moment, Another highlight of the ceremony was when my parents put on my vestments - that was special” Mark described the emotions he went through on the day as ‘happy’, ‘joyful’ and with an element of ‘surrealness’. He also mentioned a feeling of “unworthiness” to be ordained a priest (a feeling his peers would surely disagree with given his dedication and devotion getting to this point). I questioned him a bit further on this point as it seemed a strange thing to say. Of course, there is a bit of impostor syndrome in us all but through our conversation Mark came across as anything but ‘unworthy’.

“I suppose what I am trying to say is that when people come to see me, or listen to me at mass, they want Fr. Mark, not Mark as a person. I am very comfortable in who I am, but as a newly ordained priest I feel like I am relying heavily on the Lord to guide me along”

I was taken aback when he gave me a statistic where in the US, the second highest cause of death in children between the age of 10-14 is suicide. He believes that “social media is crippling young people with fear, anxiety, hostility and loneliness and that the voice of the Church can offer assurance and hope that we don’t need to be afraid in these times in which we live”.

“Take children living in third world countries as an example, how is it that these children with no phones, toys, money or basic essentials can still go through life with a smile on their face and enjoy the simple things, all the while children in the western world can have everything they want and still struggle to find joy in their lives…society nowadays wants maximum pleasure with minimum pain”

One thing that was clear to me was that Mark has a great way of expressing his beliefs, a skill that would have been difficult to teach or learn.

When asked about working with people through the lows of life and the advice he would give to people who may be struggling with their own faith, Mark

I could have questioned Mark for another hour as he had some very interesting views on a range of different topics but I finished up with a few (naïve) quick fire ones…

CD: Do you get time off to relax?

Mark: Yes, downtime is very important in the life of a priest. I still make an effort to connect with family and friends often and I still attend various basketball and football matches when I can. I enjoy travelling and spending time with people so I arrange opportunities throughout the year for all these to take place”.

CD: Would you go for a pint?

Mark: Occasionally I might head to the local with my dad for a pint.

CD: On the topic of your father Brian, does he call you father now?

Mark: (laughing) Only when he is having the craic!

Leaving your job – giving notice

If you decide to change your job, you must by law tell your employer that you plan to leave. This is called giving notice.

You must give your employer a certain length of notice (for example, 2 weeks or a month). The length of notice you must give is set down in law and is usually stated in your contract of employment.

Generally, your contract of employment states how much notice you must give. Your employer must give you a written copy of these rules, even if the rest of the contract has not been written down in full. You should check what your contract says about giving notice and follow those rules. If you want to make a different arrangement, discuss this with your employer. If my contract does not specify the notice period what should I do?

Statutory minimum notice is the shortest period of notice you are allowed to give under Irish law. If your contract of employment does not specify how much notice to give, you must give the legal minimum amount of notice, which is one week.

The legal (or ‘statutory’) minimum notice is set out in Section 6 of the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Act 1973.

County-wide electric car charging plan

Kerry County Council is working with Cork County Council to bring more electric car charging points to the county including Killarney.

A recent Kerry County Council meeting revealed that there is a three-step process in place to roll out more charging points across the country.

The points are: Develop EV charging infrastructure strategies; prepare a business/implementation plan and funding application and begin the delivery and roll-out of residential/neighbourhood charging infrastructure and destination charging infrastructure.

The plan is managed by the Department of Transport under its Zero Emission

Vehicles Ireland scheme which was established in July 2022 to co-ordinate the delivery of EV charging infrastructure. Local Authorities are being requested to prepare strategies that will focus on, destination charging, residential/neighbourhood charging for those without off street charging capabilities, and en-route Infrastructure along the National Road Network.

The move was confirmed at the September meeting of Kerry County Council after Killarney councillor Niall Kelleher asked if “Kerry County Council organise a competitive tender to install 20 electric car chargers in the public car parks in Killarney.”

Deadline for inclusion in National Fleet Database

Fleet owners and motor traders must upload their vehicle details to the National Fleet Database (NFD) by November 30 under newly enacted legislation, according to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI).

This legal responsibility was set out in the recently enacted Road Traffic and Roads Act (2023) and the deadline confirmed by the Department of Transport.

Private vehicles with dedicated insurance policies make up the vast majority of vehicles on Irish roads (approximately 92%) and they will be unaffected by this requirement.

However an estimated 8% of the total road vehicle population use flexible, fleet style insurance policies which can be transferred within a specific fleet from

A dedicated online database, the Nation-

al Fleet Database (NFD), was launched last year to enable the collection of this information. Currently details for over 62,000 fleet vehicles have been uploaded to the NFD – in the region of 25% of the estimated 250,000 vehicles covered by fleet and motor trade insurance policies operating in Ireland.

The vehicle data on the NFD will be combined with the same information for private vehicles and used by An Garda Síochána to identify vehicles which are being driven illegally without insurance.

First Home Scheme extended to Self builds

In the past week the government have made the welcome announcement that the First Home Scheme has been extended to cover those going down the self build route.

The scheme was initially set up to help first time buyers bridge the gap between their mortgage, deposit and the price of a new home as part of the Government’s Housing for All strategy. Initially it had been open to those buying newly-built houses and apartments in private developments and later extend-

ed to renters looking to purchase their rental property from their landlord.

This latest extension now means that self-build customers can benefit from financial support of up to 30% of the total build cost of their home, to add to their self-build mortgage and deposit.

The scheme is available to qualifying homebuyers and self-build customers who are taking out mortgages from AIB (Incl EBS & Haven Mortgages) Bank of Ireland or Permanent TSB.

So far, almost 500 homes have been bought using the scheme, with almost

2,000 buyers approved.

Houses with prices of up to €475,000 and apartments with prices of up to €500,000 are currently eligible for the scheme, depending on location. Around 80% of approvals have been for buyers in Dublin, Cork, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow, with the remaining 20% spread across 19 counties throughout Ireland.

Who sadly left us on 16th July 2023.

The late Seamus McCarthy, known by one and all as the “heart of Gneeveguilla village’’, loyally served for 52 years as postmaster in the area. Seamus, who died on July 16 last, aged 82, is dearly missed by his family, his many friends and people in the local community.

Born on April 6, 1941, to Francie and Maggie McCarthy, he was one of a family of ten and the third generation of the family to run the post office in Gneeveguilla. He attended Gneeveguilla National School and secondary school in Naas, Co Kildare, and started working with his mother in the post office after his father had been unwell for many years.

Seamus went to work in London for a short period before returning to work in the post office after his father passed away, also delivering mail and telegrams to houses in a scattered area when the occasion demanded. When his mother retired in the late 1960’s, Seamus took over. Shortly after returning from England, he met his wife, Noreen, from the Ballydesmond area, and they went on to have seven children.

As well as running the post office, the couple also built the first supermarket in the Gneeveguilla area. An ardent GAA supporter, Seamus was a founding member of the Gneeveguilla club, serving as honorary secretary, in 1961, and as chairperson in 1973/’74. He was instrumental in starting the club’s under-age structure and in coaching juvenile teams.

Passionate about keeping rural Ireland alive, he was the main representative postmaster for the Mallow area in the fight to keep post offices open countrywide. And, as was the case with any cause he espoused, he devoted all his considerable energy to it.

Seamus lived out his Christianity in his everyday life and loved helping people, especially the vulnerable and the needy. He spent endless hours assisting people fill out forms for various types of assistance. Christmas Day was a really big occasion in the McCarthy home, with several invited dinner guests, including people living alone and those unable to cook for themselves. It was a day Seamus truly enjoyed in the company of others whom he warmly welcomed. Known for his in-depth knowledge of local families, he loved to walk around Gneeveguilla, especially Teahan’s Wood where had had fond childhood memories. As a person who loved meeting people and chatting with them, he enjoyed a pint of Guinness in the village pubs. Seamus also loved the Irish language and spoke it with anyone willing to so engage with him. He also loved having visitors call to the house, as well as family members and relatives from America, England, Dublin and other parts of Ireland. A bed was always found for such people, who often spent time with the family during the summer holidays.

The closure of Gneeveguilla post office, on January 26, 2019, marked the end of a long and dedicated McCarthy connection with the service, dating to 1910. It was an emotional occasion for Seamus whose grandfather, Michael McCarthy, was the first member of the family to be postmaster.

Predeceased by his sons, Frank and Vincent, Seamus is survived by his widow Noreen, children Margaret, Timmy, Ann Marie, Nora and Patrick, sister Hannah Mary O’Connor, brother Ambrose, and grandsons Broghan and Jayden.

Seamus was laid to rest in his beloved Gneeveguilla and the large crowds at his funeral bore ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held.

It’s do or die for Kenmare, Rathmore and Spa in the Kerry

The final round of group games in the Kerry Senior Football Championship takes place this weekend with 11 out of 16 teams still alive and vying for a spot in the last eight.

Unfortunately, brutal weather condi-

tions badly affected most matches in Round 2 last weekend but credit to the players, they persevered and still managed to put on a show.

East Kerry, Templenoe, Dingle and Na Gaeil all secured their place in the next phase with impressive wins; Na Gaeil’s unexpected 0-10 to 0-9 victory over Dr Crokes was perhaps the result of the round.

There is still plenty to play for in Round 3 with qualification and top seeding up for grabs right across the board.

CHANCE

Group 3 is perhaps the most intriguing pot of the bunch with all four teams in with a realistic chance of advancing. By the same token, all four teams know that if things don’t go their way, their championship will be over.

Last year’s beaten finalists Mid Kerry lead the way on four points – a tally that would be good enough to guarantee qualification in other groups – and a draw at home to Kerins O’Rahillys on Saturday (5pm) will be good enough to

secure top spot and top seed for the quarter-final draw.

Spa will join them in the hat if they can beat Shannon Rangers at home (also Saturday at 5pm), but things get complicated if one or both of Spa and Mid Kerry slip up.

Kerins O’Rahillys, boosted by the return of Jack Savage, are still very much in contention. They can catch Mid Kerry if they beat them in Beaufort. If Spa also win, there will be a three-way tie and the top two will be decided on scoring

difference. Spa are currently lagging behind in this department so a high-scoring win would be optimal.

If Spa and Rahillys both lose, they will remain on two points and they will be joined by Shannon Rangers. Again, scoring difference will apply to determine the group runners-up. A draw will be good enough for Spa if Rahillys draw or lose.

All things considered, the smart money is on Mid Kerry and Spa to qualify.

RATHMORE/KENMARE

Group 2 is also up in the air with three teams firmly in contention. Unfortunately for Feale Rangers, they were unable to match their strong showing in 2022; after two defeats in two games, they have already been eliminated from the competition.

Rathmore and Kenmare Shamrocks are currently joint top on three points each with St Kieran’s just a point behind in third. Rathmore and Kenmare play each other in Kenmare on Sunday at 4pm with the winners heading for the next round. The losers could be in a spot of bother as Kieran’s will fancy their chances of beating Feale Rangers, who have nothing to play for but pride. A Kieran’s win will guarantee a quarter-final berth as long as the other match isn’t a draw. If Rathmore and Kenmare draw and Kieran’s win, there will be a three-way tie at the top. Rathmore’s superior scoring difference would see them through and Kieran’s would need to win by five points to overtake Kenmare in second. It’s also possible that Kieran’s could sneak through with a draw but scoring difference makes this scenario unlikely. Still, this group could go right down the wire.

EASE

Things are more or less decided in Group 1, apart from the identity of the

top seed. Champions East Kerry have already eased their way into the knockout stages on the back of consecutive eight-point wins over South Kerry and West Kerry.

Remarkably, they have managed this feat without eight of the starting 15 who defeated Mid Kerry in the 2022 final. The Clifford brothers are still being rested, as are fellow Kerry players Chris O’Donoghue and Ruairí Murphy. Legion pair Jonathan Lyne and James O’Donoghue and Rathmore duo Shane Ryan and Paul Murphy are also notable absentees from last year’s decider.

The winners of East Kerry v Templenoe (Sunday at 1.30pm, Fitzgerald Stadium) will earn first place. Jerry O’Sullivan’s side will be favourites, regardless of how many stars are rested.

The other game between South Kerry and West Kerry is meaningless on paper but both teams will be eager to end the year on some kind of high.

PASSAGE

It’s the same story in Group 4 as Na Gaeil and Dingle have both already booked their passage to the quarters. Senior Club champions Dingle will host their co-leaders in Páirc an Ághasaigh on Saturday at 2pm. They would naturally like to win and keep the momentum going but it wouldn’t be surprising if some players are given time to recuperate following a hectic period that has included seven games in as many weeks. Likewise, Na Gaeil may choose to hold back with one eye on what will be a historic quarter-final for them. They failed to make it out of their group in their first year at senior level in 2022. Following last weekend’s famous win over Dr Crokes, the lads from Killeen will be dreaming of at least one more scalp. Remember, if they fail to make the county final then a senior relegation playoff

against Tralee rivals Kerins O’Rahillys awaits (assuming Rahillys don’t make the final themselves).

Dr Crokes host St Brendan’s in Lewis Road (also Saturday at 2pm) with both sides on zero points from two matches. The Killarney club were devastated to lose to Na Gaeil in Round 2 and coupled with the opening defeat to Dingle, that result means that they have failed to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2014 when they lost to Legion in Round 3 of what was then a knockout

competition.

Losing Gavin White to a hamstring injury during the Club Championship was a massive blow and Tony Brosnan, another key player, has only just returned following a collapsed lung.

After this weekend their focus will shift to preparing for the O’Donoghue Cup, a competition they are aiming to win for the third year in a row.

All six of this weekend’s matches that have something on the line will be streamed live by Clubber.

The GAA: where you can do things that are illegal in UFC

Back when Conor McGregor rose to prominence, around ten years ago now, the UFC became quite popular in Ireland. The Dubliner’s fights were big events. You’d go in for a pint and hear lads chatting about spinning back fists and rear naked chokes. (If you were only half listening, you’d nearly think they were on about something else entirely.)

I never got into MMA. I couldn’t warm to McGregor so that didn’t help, but the primary reason is that the spectacle is too violent for me.

Give me a good clean game of Gaelic football any day, I would say to no one in particular, as my friends gleefully watched some Brazilian chap getting his face smooshed into the canvas in a blood-soaked flurry of fists and elbows and kneecaps to the nose.

Of course, the irony of my holier-than-though attitude is that the GAA is violent too, and arguably in a worse way. At least in the UFC you know what you’re getting. If you’re participating, there’s a good chance your arm might get ripped out of its socket or your skull might end up with more cavities than is strictly necessary. If you’re sitting in the front row, you could get blood spatter on your shirt. You know that when you’re buying your ticket.

On the other hand, the violence in the GAA is a sneakier kind of violence. It’s always there, lurking in the long grass, waiting to show its angry head. Sometimes - in fact, a lot of the time - it doesn’t bother. But when it does reveal itself, things can get very bad, very fast.

Some of the harder b******s amongst you are probably rolling your eyes at this point. Sure, what would the GAA be without the odd belt?

That would be grand if the odd belt was all we were talking about here. On the contrary, some of the violent acts we’ve seen on GAA pitches are far worse than that. In fact, not only are they bad by GAA standards, they’re even bad by UFC

Yes, some scenes that unfold in Gaelic football and hurling games are too violent for the most violent mainstream sport in the world.

Take the recent Johnny Glynn incident in the Galway hurling championship. The former county footballer was caught on video apparently choking an opponent with his hand fixed around his neck. The prostrate victim was visibly struggling for air. When he got back to his feet, the skin around his throat was badly marked. In typical GAA fashion both players were yellow-carded at the time. But then, after the match (no doubt prompted by the reaction on social media), the CCCC stepped in to investigate. Glynn received a one-match suspension – the same punishment he’d get if he was sent off for throwing a punch or for calling the referee a bollocks.

In January, during the All-Ireland Junior Club final at Croke Park, a Stewartstown Harps player aggressively grabbed Fossa’s David Clifford in the groin area. The referee didn’t see it but the TV footage is pretty clear. The incident sparked outrage but, as far as I can tell, no subsequent action was taken against the perpetrator. Any attack to the groin area, including striking or grabbing, is illegal in UFC.

In 2022, when the championship match between Armagh and Galway turned into an all-out melee, Armagh panellist Tiernan Kelly gouged Damien Comer’s eye. He received a six-month ban, but the timing meant he didn’t miss a single minute of intercounty football. Eye gouging is illegal in UFC.

from Roscommon showing a team mentor entering the field during an U17 match and physically assaulting a referee. The referee was knocked unconscious and had to be removed from the scene in an ambulance. A 96-week ban – the maximum suspension allowable by the GAA’s current rules – was proposed at the time.

As recently as last weekend, an amateur video from a Dublin hurling match brought the issue of GAA violence to the fore once again. Another ugly mass brawl turned uglier when some guy in plain clothes an opposition player in the side of the head with a hurley. The victim was not wearing a helmet.

These instances of violence that we have seen in Gaelic games are not just excessive for a field sport, they are excessive for the most vicious sport out there – a sport that is too bloody for a lot of viewers (myself included).

Does this bother top ranking GAA officials? Because it should. This week they launched a new ‘respect’ initiative alongside the FAI and the IRFU. “The three main sporting bodies in Ireland are working together to remind everyone within their games about the values of ‘Respect’ on and off the field,” the press release reads.

That sounds nice but the people who engage in violence on our playing fields exhibit a complete lack of respect to our games and “reminding” them of “values” isn’t going to make a blind bit of difference. They need to face appropriate consequences for their actions - including permanent bans for dangerous acts - not a slap on the wrist or some time in the bold corner.

They talk about players and coaches and supporters showing respect but by failing to properly punish violence, the GAA are showing a lack of respect to everyone else.

Clarke’s young guns are ready to rock

This is a big challenge for you Brian, coaching what is basically a very young squad of local players coming out of U18 ranks with the addition of two US players.

Yes, it’s a big challenge for these young men and for me as a senior coach, but I like what I’ve seen with these U18s, particularly over the past year. They’ll give good value. They will be totally committed, prepared to work their socks off and want to push hard for success. I can promise spectators that these lads will bring youthful enthusiasm and excitement to their game.

As a past player, I enjoyed coaching the U18s team. They have ability, commitment and drive, showing well in over 39 games in the highly competitive Cork league last season that they are up for the senior league. They also did well in a trip abroad to Valencia over four games and of course they won the prestigious 2022 Christmas Blitz in Castleisland.

Have you been busy in the pre-season preparing for Sunday’s opener?

Certainly. I’ll be using the local young guns as the nucleus of the team and we have added Braden Bell, the 6’7” Texas native, and Terrion Moss, the 5’10” player from the University of Maine. They are both coming off five very successful seasons of college basketball.

Moss is not a big man so how do you intend to use him?

He is a very versatile player, comfortable on the ball, good defensively, can do a lot assisting scores and he is great on the steals, providing scoring opportunities.

You are confined to a max of two Americans on the floor, but there are no such restrictions on European guests… Yes. The option is there to sign up Europeans without restrictions in numbers, but we intend to build our campaign around the two US players and the locals. The option to draft in Europeans is always there but our nucleus is a St Paul’s team built on local players.

Who can the spectators expect to see on the floor during the campaign?

Young local players from last year’s U18 squad include Mark Sheehan, Jack O’Sullivan, Oisín Spring and Eoin Carroll. Then you have the experienced guys like Mark O’Shea, David Gleeson - hopefully returning from injury, Jamie O’Sullivan and Ronan Collins, who has rejoined the squad. I see from your fixture schedule that after this weekend in Carlow you will have two consecutive home games. We’re looking forward to a big home support in the Killarney Sports Centre (Aura) on October 7 against the UL Eagles and then on October 14 we welcome the Galway Titans. All games tip off at 7.30pm and we are inviting local lovers of basketball to come along to see the young players stepping up to the big challenge of senior National League standards. You seem to be putting great trust on these young guns to step up to the tempo?

They are great young players and they are totally committed to our training rota every Monday and Thursday. They’ll give it everything in the games, so your readers are promised great fare in home games. All support will be appreciated. Back to yourself as a sportsman. You reached great heights in basketball, football and golf. Tell me about your background in basketball. We got a great grounding in Coolgreane Park [Brian’s siblings are Seán, Caroline and Dessie Junior RIP]. I was always playing sport with fellas older than myself, and you had some great players in Coolgreane when I was growing up. You learned how to take care of yourself. You

On Sunday the St Paul’s ladies’ and men’s teams tip-off their respective seasons with a double header in Carlow. Eamonn Fitzgerald caught up with Brian Clarke, the new Scotts Lakers senior men’s coach, to chat about the challenge that lies ahead.

learned how to shimmy, duck, dodge, weave, or whatever to get past the older fellas, and the same happened in the football.

I admired the great Paudie O’Connor, Merv Griffin and then later when I played senior, I learned a lot from Tom Looney and Joey Sheahan who was a great player. Seán Coleman was our coach.

The skills learned at a young age were features of your game thereafter. I recall two incidents. First, the 1992 All-Ireland Vocational Colleges final in Croke Park. You were full forward on the Kerry team and after 14 minutes you seemed to get a little bored having already scored 1-3 against the unfortunate Offaly full back. You drifted 80 yards outfield toward the Davin/Hogan Stand side, collected a punt pass and as the full back bore down on you, all you did was one solo and quick as lightning whipped the ball overhead and caught it behind your back with your right hand. The disappearing act brought howls of protest from the Offaly bench, but the referee did not deem it a foul. And wasn’t he correct in his decision?

Yes, but very few refs would wave play on. Of course, you went on to win that game, your first All-Ireland, to be followed later in 1996 when you won the All-Ireland U21 title with a Kerry team that included Diarmuid Murphy, Dara Ó Sé, Dara Ó Cinnéide, Liam Hasset (captain) and others.

Crokes men on the starting 15. What was the other story?

You will recall the Killarney Community College basketball team you were part of had the likes of Mark O’Leary, Brendan O’Neill, Richard Horgan, Martin Brosnan and others. Pat O’Shea was the top-class coach and in the away game against the highly fancied senior Dungannon College you had a tremendous first half. During the interval the headmaster asked me who was the number 13 who was breaking their hearts. When I told him it was a garsún named Clarkey and to look out for him, he was a versatile sportsman, he replied, “He must be doing very well with St Vincent’s National League team in Killarney”. When I told him you were a 15-year-old precocious talent, his reply was instant. “If he was here, he would be playing senior men’s National League”.

Nice one. I thought it might be another double-trouble Clarkey story…

Yes, you were rarely run of the mill. Sometimes explosive and certainly temperamental, which some opponents used to get you sent off. Hands up, Eamonn. No, I wouldn’t say they set out to get me sent off, but they could certainly get under my skin. Sometimes they did and I walked. I could not handle what went on and reacted, making an instant wrong decision, but only sometimes. Isn’t that life itself? Sometimes we make the wrong decisions - but only sometimes.

Your underage performances with Dr Crokes were picked up quickly by the Kerry GAA selectors.

Yes, I was just 16 when Dan Bán (O’Sullivan), the Currow referee and Kerry selector, called me into the Kerry minors.

So you were on for a three-year stint with the Kerry minors?

Could have been, but poor Dan Bán was amazed that I did not join them. I was off to New Hampshire, USA with the Irish underage basketball squad. And when you are young and want to go, you gotta go.

No luck with the Kerry minors on the following two years, losing to Cork. You were picked up quickly for the Kerry senior squad to win the Sam Maguire in 1997, but you didn’t kick on with Kerry as expected. Why not?

Yes, 1997 was the breakthrough for Kerry after some lean years. I had a great understanding with Maurice Fitzgerald, a class player, a genius, really the man that won that final.

At age 22 you looked set for a long and successful career with the Kerry seniors, but by age 24 you walked away from the Kerry team. Yourself and Páidí Ó Sé didn’t hit it off.

Yerra, we’ll park that and leave it lie. It wasn’t a huge surprise that you took to the golf like a star, and your handicap came tumbling down. How far down? I got to 5.4.

That is phenomenal, even as low as Paudie Clifford. How come?

Know what you are doing and then it is practice, practice and more practice. The same goes for basketball and football.

There are examples of players who reached the top in both football and in basketball. I think of Tadhgie Lyne, Jim McKeever, Jason Sherlock, Pat

O’Shea, Liam McHale and Star (Kieran Donaghy). The latter told me that the safe hands and quick hands so necessary in basketball are a big plus for football. Can one transfer experiences and skills from one sport to another?

Certainly, and to add to Donaghy’s advice, you also have excellent vision, knowing what’s going on around you and deciding to lay the ball off to a teammate better positioned to score, or on some occasions the correct thing to do is to go for your own score. Good decision making is key to success. If you are prepared to learn and practise what you learn in one sport and transfer that to another sport, you will succeed. Attitude is just as crucial.

There must be down sides to playing basketball on a hard surface and playing football on the following day where the going is anything from yielding to very soft. It must be very difficult to marry both?

You are correct. I found that joints weren’t a problem but muscles, hamstrings etc were under pressure. They may be very stiff after being on the boards and that doesn’t transfer well to a football match the following day.

We’d better wrap this up Brian, due to space constraints. Best of luck on Sunday to St Paul’s men’s and ladies’ teams. We look forward to seeing your young guns in the Aura for the home games on October 7 and 14. One final word: what can we expect of your team in the 2023/24 season?

Spectators can expect a very competitive young squad, and excitement that will light up the court. They will be fired up and competitive like I was as a player. They are up for it; so am I. They will bring athleticism, passion, enthusiasm, scores, and maybe a few dunks as well.

U15 NATIONAL CUP RESULT: Shannon Town 3 Killarney Athletic 2 AET. Our U15s made the trip to Shannon on Saturday morning for the first round of the national cup and unfortunately came away empty handed after extra time. We started on the front foot and played some great football which resulted in a Jayden Hurley free kick finding the top corner. This seemed to spur the home side on, and their physically bigger boys began to impose themselves on the game. After some good play in the middle of the park the home side levelled just before half time. HT 1-1. The second half started with Shannon on the front foot, but our boys stood firm until a pretty soft penalty was awarded to Shannon as we were headed paying out from the back 2-1 to the Clare side. Our boys started to grow back into the game and got rewarded with an equaliser when Jayden again hit another cracking free kick to the Shannon net. 2-2. We pushed and pushed for the winner only for our own penalty appeals to be waved away after Tadgh was upended in the box and Alan headed the resulting corner just over. FT 2-2 Extra time was needed to separate the two sides and it was the home team that struck the killer blow halfway through the first half of extra time to make it 3-2. All 18 players tried their best, but the home side saw the game out. The home team laid on the best of hospitality to our lads and parents after the game and we wish them all the best in the remainder of the competition it’s back to local action for our boys in two weeks’ time who hopefully can get back to winning ways.

SENIOR B TEAM: Patrick Kielty may be the new host of the Late Late Show on Friday night, but the Senior B Team produced their own Saturday evening version in Direen to qualify for the Molyneaux Cup final. Trailing by 1-10 to 1-5 with twelve minutes to spare the game looked to be out of reach but a strong finish grabbed the spoils. Sam Benson got the ball rolling with a point soon followed by another by David O’Sullivan. With the game heading for injury time Peter O’Sullivan broke down the right wing, cut inside and laid it off to Shaun Keane, who duly sent a low scudder to the net. With the sides now level it was all in the melting pot. David O’Sullivan, accurate all afternoon, nudged Legion one point ahead and some stout defending saw out the win. Glenflesk had looked comfortable at various stages in the first half as well but some well-timed interventions from David O’Sullivan and Thomas Moriarty with an opportunistic goal meant they were never out of reach. Leading 1-7 to 1-5 at the short whistle, the men from the Glen extended their advantage to five midway through the half but that was only the prompt for the home side to finish with a flourish. They now face local rivals Dr Crokes in the decider which is due to played this weekend coming.

Dr Crokes GAA

SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 0:09 Na Gaeil 0:10. We travelled to Na Gaeil on Saturday where we suffered another disappointing loss in the County Championship. We played the first half against a very strong wind. The wind didn’t seem to bother us in the first minute of play when Charlie Keatings effort on goal hit the cross bar. The rebound fell to the hands of Cian McMahon who was blocked down before Micheal Burns fired the ball to the left and wide. The first score of the game came in the 4th minute through a Na Gaeil 45. Tony Brosnan then levelled matters 2 minutes later with a free of his own. Charlie Keating had another chance at goal in the 7th minute but struck the ball too far to the left and wide. Points were traded for the remainder of the half, and we went in trailing by one at half time. We opened the scoring in the second half through a Tom Doyle point to level matters once again. The home side played very defensively throughout the half and forced us to kick under pressure and from distance. We took our chances throughout the half, some of which paid off while others didn’t. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be our day. We now face St. Brendan’s at home next weekend in the final round of the group.

MOLYNEAUX CUP SEMI FINAL: Dr. Crokes 2:12 Firies 1:04. Played in tough conditions in Dr. Crokes GAA grounds our second team secured their place in the 2023 Molyneaux Cup Final. It was the visitors who got the scoreboard moving first before an Alex Hennigan free levelled matters moments later.

Alex Hennigan soon saw green when he fired the ball passed the Firies number 1 to give us our first maximum of the day. Our backs played fantastic football and Firies scoreless for the remainder of the half. Special mention to Sean Coppinger

who was outstanding in defence. Conditions seemed to worsen in the second half and wet and slippy conditions made it hard for players to keep the ball. Shay O’Meara was unlucky not to stop a Firies ball rolling passed him and into the net 3 minutes after the reset. Second half points from Brian Fitzgerald, Sean Fitzgerald, Sean O’Neill and a Brendan Falvey goal set us on our way, and we ran out comprehensive winners. We now face Legion in the Final next weekend.

U14 Super Ten competition took place this weekend. Killarney Legion, Dr Crokes and Fossa hosted games in testing weather conditions. The standard of football was excellent with over one hundred twenty players in action.

Clubs pitches were in superb shape for the games. Thanks to Eddie Walsh (Rathmore), Evan Horan (Glenflesk), John O’Neill (Spa) and Sean O’Keeffe East Kerry Board for supporting Vince Cooper East Kerry/Kenmare GDA in completing the games. Killarney Camogie Club

UNDER 12: Well done to our girls who are Division 2 County League Champions after a well fought victory v Ballyduff in Crotta GAA Grounds last Monday evening 18th September. There was great hurling on display throughout the game from both sides, and our girls pulled through with the victory winning by a small margin in the finish. Thanks to Ballyduff for a very sporting game, which was nail biting most of the 2nd half! Thanks to referee Mike Hennessy and Crotta GAA for the use of their pitch. County Secretary Elaine Murphy & Kerry star Kate Lynch were on hand to present both teams with their sets of medals. Thanks to Sarah Dineen and Sean Casey for their hard work training the girls all year. Thanks to the parents and supporters for the car pooling and dropping the girls to each training session and match, no matter how far we had to travel. Most of all, thanks to a fantastic group of girls, who give 100% and keep on digging deep, especially when it's needed the most. The bond they are making is incredible and lifelong friendships are being forged along the way. Looking forward to more great games over the coming years

U11s TO PLAY AT THOMOND PARK: Best of luck to our U11 boys and girls who head to Thomond Park tomorrow to play Richmond RFC at half time of the Munster v Barbarians game. A double header at Thomond which promises to be a wonderful day out for our players with a dream coming through to play on the hallowed turf! Best of luck to our coaches Liam Murphy and Fergus Cronin and all the players taking part.

BALLINCOLLIG BLITZ: A huge congrats to our U18 girls who won the 10 a side blitz today at tanner park. The blitz featured 12 teams from Across Munster and Leinster. The girls played fantastic running rugby despite very wet conditions. Killarney played Middleton-Youghal, Ballincollig and Kilkenny in the group stages before meeting

Dolphin in the semi-final and Ballincollig again in the final. Defensive work rate was excellent and the girls conceded just one try across the five matches. Thanks Ballincollig for a fantastic day. Well done to all our girls and coaches. Next Saturday the girls take part in a blitz in Limerick ahead of the big Munster matches at Thomond.

MILLO O'MEARA TOURNAMENT: Last Sunday we held our annual Millo O'Meara memorial Tournament with 8 clubs taking part on the day, in wet conditions. The pitches were in fantastic shape in spite of the weather and the rugby flowed. In the end Clonakilty beat Killarney to win the Millo O'Mara trophy, Kanturk won the Bowl, Shannon won the plate and Dunmanway/Bantry were the medal final winners. A wonderful day in memory of our dear friend and coach Millo who would have been so proud to see the tournament take place, with €1,500 raised for the Kerry friends of Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. Thanks to Anne Gabbett, Fiona Landers and Liam Murphy for the hard work in organising the day, to all our referees (Declan, TJ, Pamela, Marie and Steve) who braved the elements allowing free flowing rugby. Also thanks to Mags, Sharon, Wendy and Nora for running the clubhouse on the day and Donncha and Seany for their help. Thanks to all the teams who took part.

WELL DONE to all the athletes that braved the weather conditions in Killarney last Sunday for the County Juvenile / Seniors Cross Country Championships. First up was the U10 Girls 1000m, Lucy Devane came 2nd and Chloe O’Sullivan came 4th and their team came 2nd place. In the U10 Boys, Conor O’Donnell came 2nd, James Doody came 3rd, Charlie Kelliher came 5th and Joe O’Shea came 6th. Fionn Culloty came 2nd and Aaron O’Sullivan came 4th in the U12 Boys 2000m. Saoirse O’Shea came 1st and Alannah McGlynn came 3rd in the U12 Girls 2000m and their team came 3rd place. Conor Duffin came 2nd in the U14 Boys 3000m. Kirsten Kenny came 2nd in the U16 Girls 4000m while Gabriel Ortega came 2nd in the U16 Boys. Grace O’Meara came 1st in the U18 5000m and Cian Spillane came 1st in the U20 5000m. Our Senior men also did fantastic with a Gold and Bronze for their team.

SEASON: Badminton season started back with the Munster Master held in the SET University Waterford on the 16th of September. Sinead Galvin started off her season in style. Winning the ladies doubles with her partner Miriam Rohan (Kingdom Castleisland), and runner up in the singles and mixed. As the new 2023-2024 badminton season commences it is the perfect time to reflect on the highlights from last season: Kerry County Championships. International: The highlight for the Killarney Club was our very own Sinead Galvin who was chosen to play for Ireland in the Netherlands in June 2023 with the Irish Masters Team, a huge achievement based on her Irish ranking from winning competitions in Munster, Leinster, Connaught, and Ulster throughout the year. COMPETITION: The final competition on our calendar is the Tom Bambury Memorial competition, being fished on this Sunday the 01st of October on Lough Lein - an annual fundraiser for the great services provided at St. Francis Special School in Beaufort - it’s

always a well-supported event and has added spice this year with the race for the final few points being heavily contested for. We are delighted to have Michael Twohig of Twohigs Supervalu Kanturk onboard this year as the competition sponsor. Entry being taken from members right up to the morning of the competition.
