€2m Derreen sports development to become hub for Killarney sports clubs
This week’s allocation of €500,000 under the Sports Capital Grants to the Derreen Sports Development Project in Killarney has been hailed as a transformative development for the town and surrounding areas.
The project core plan is for a Kerry Stars Hub, which aims to be a first-of-its-kind facility for special needs athletes.
The project, located on Council-owned property, includes plans for two basketball courts, a gymnasium, a multi-function room, changing facilities, a playground, ample parking, and a sensory garden.
Earlier this year Kerry County Council allocated just under €1 million through the Community Recognition Fund.
It is hoped that an additional €500,000 will be allocated in a second round of Community Recognition Fund grants which will be announced before the end
of September.
The Derreen Sports Development will benefit a wide range of local sports clubs, including Kerry Stars Special Olympic Club, St Paul's Basketball Club, and Killarney Judo Club.
Its proximity to Killarney Legion GAA Club and Killarney Celtic grounds will make it an attractive facility for athletes of all ages and abilities.
A playground will also be included, providing a much-needed recreational space for local children.
If a total of €2 million can be secured the project will open up to a wide range of sports clubs in the area.
The second phase of the project, which will involve public consultation, will expand the facility's appeal to clubs from East Kerry.
Killarney Celtic also has plans to build a state-of-the-art clubhouse and a dedicated pitch for soccer, and it is intended to incorporate the Tennis Club, Killarney Legion GAA Club, and other local sports organisations.
Transition Year students drive Derreen sports development
Transition Year students from St Brendan's and St Brigid's Colleges in Killarney have played a pivotal role in driving the Derreen Sports Development project forward.
The dedicated team of students has been instrumental in navigating the planning process and securing funding for the project.
They created the initial drawing for the project, prepared a multi-media promotional video and, in a first for schools in the area, were responsible for the Part 8 Planning Permission application to Kerry County Council.
“We all know that complicated development proposals need dedicated people
to put in long hard hours, to bring a project to reality. I was hugely impressed at the fact that it was designed and driven by TY students in two of the local schools and that they in fact filled out the application for the Part 8. Massive credit is due to all the individuals involved as well as Kerry County Council officials,” said Cllr Michael Cahill.
The Derreen Sports Development is a groundbreaking initiative for secondary school students in the area. The project aims to create a state-of-the-art sports facility that will benefit the entire community. In addition to the core facilities, the project includes plans for a Kerry Stars Hub, a first-of-its-kind facility for special needs athletes, and a playground.
Several Killarney clubs benefit from funding
While Derreen Sports Centre emerged as the biggest winner in the recent Community Sports Facilities Fund announcement, several other Killarney-based clubs have also received money. The funding allocation, totalling over
Notable recipients include:
€13.6 million, will benefit more than 140 clubs across Kerry. The grants will be used to fund various improvements, including new pitches, dressing rooms, sports halls, gyms, floodlights, and solar panels.
• Ballyhar Dynamos FC: Second Playing Pitch (€141,972)
In addition to the funding allocation, the Community Sports Facilities Fund has introduced a new stipulation to promote female participation in sport.

Franciscan Friary hosts
Triduum
for St Padre Pio
The Franciscan Friary in Killarney recently hosted a successful Triduum in honour of St Padre Pio, the Patron Saint of healing.
The event was led by Fr Eamonn O'Driscoll OFM, a popular figure in the community.
The Triduum, a three-day preparation for the Feast of St Padre Pio, took place on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
The feast day itself, September 23, marks the saint's memorial day and the anniversary of his entrance to heaven. This was the third year that the Friary has held a celebration for St Padre Pio, and organisers were pleased with the
turnout and the devotion shown by attendees.
A first class relic - a bandage with St Padre Pio's blood - was on display during the two daily Masses held over the three days.
Br Pat Lynch of the Franciscan Friary expressed hope that the Triduum would become an annual event.
"It was very well attended, and it's lovely to see the devotion to Padre Pio. We were very happy with it,” he said.

Marie Meets
Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.
20 years of magic from Maura Moriarty of Aghadoe Heights Hotel
“The love bug of hospitality and tourism, and the buzz that went with it, hit me from an early age.
"It began as a summer job, many moons ago at the Three Lakes Hotel run by the King family, a hotel with a unique family atmosphere which we all enjoyed. We worked breakfast, lunch and dinner and a wedding too if it was on the cards. I then moved to Cork to Hayfield Manor, still owned by the lovely Scally family. This was a game changer in fine-tuning attention to detail and the standards that go with the efficiency and personalised touch of maintaining the five-star standard. It was a personal goal to deliver the 'Wow' factor and premium service to each guest that walked through the doors of Hayfield Manor”.
“In 2004, 20 years ago, I moved back to my hometown Killarney, where Pat and Marie Chawke gave me the opportunity of working as Food and Beverage Lounge Supervisor at the five-star Aghadoe Heights Hotel,” said Maura. It was clearly visible from simply looking out the window how one would feel 'the wow' ever before experiencing the relaxation of premium and personalised comfort, not to mind the extravagance of the surroundings before a guest's anticipated needs might be met. A panoramic, therapeutic view of Killarney's beautiful lakes and mountains where nature really lives its best life in all weather!
“At the Heights Bar & Lounge, I'm at home Marie. A casual lunch, an evening meal, a family get-together or a wedding day, I've been blessed to work in these surroundings for the past 20 years with great staff and management down through the years, some of which I consider extended family members. Work-
ing as a team is key and I particularly enjoy welcoming new staff to this team, showing them the ropes. I love to see them excel” Maura continued.
“Surely you've seen lots of changes in those ropes over the last 20 years Maura”? I asked.
“Yes, it sure has, but in general, it will always be maintaining a high standard, and consistency and giving each guest the five-star personalised touch,” Maura
explained.
Maura experienced a flip in the magic of this five-star wand when she married Padraig (affectionately known as PChead concierge at the Killarney Park Hotel) at the penthouse in Aghadoe.
“The staff awaited my arrival with a guard of honour as I entered. It was a wonderful feeling to be on the receiving end of a product I put my heart and soul into. Many celebrities such as Meat
Loaf, Cold Play, The Cranberries, Mary McAleese, Morrissey, Westlife have passed through this door but we treat everyone the same. Something I can vouch for personally.” Maura smiled. I needed to ask Maura, about the helter-skelter nature and ever-changing schedule of a busy hotel, and how she copes with achieving a healthy work/life balance over a lengthy 20 years delivering a five-star service at Aghadoe, all the while raising a family and balancing shifts with her hospitality husband PC. “I have 3 children – Daniel is in construction and Eimear is studying Business in Cork and Aoibheann is in 5th class at Lissivigeen National School. The balancing of it all is down to my parents Mary and Donie Moriarty. They have always been the backbone to me and all my siblings since the day we were born. They are the biggest cog in the wheel of making family life work. I've been offered managerial promotions down through the years and the hotel has been fantastic in facilitating family life, but my friends and family are everything to me and balancing that is my priority.
“I thoroughly enjoy delivering five-star standard to guests for 40 hours of my working week, Marie, but giving five stars to my nearest and dearest is of equal importance too. I love the simple things in life like walking my dog Toby in the National Park. We love Kerry and its beaches especially Cromane, Inch, and Valentia as an extended family, making memories and spending quality time together. It's the little things.” Maura added.
It's so true. People will, of course, remember the material things in life but never forget how you've made them feel, and this applies to all aspects of life, family and work life included.”
Daniel O'Donnell's INEC show on TG4
The popular country music show
‘Opry le Daniel ar Thuras’ is returning to TG4 this week, hosted by Ireland's number one country music artist, Daniel O'Donnell.
The show, which features a mix of estab-
lished and emerging Irish country music talent, was filmed live at the INEC earlier this year.
Each episode of the show offers a unique theme and features special guest performances. The first show of the
Traffic data highlights urgent need for bypass
New figures released this week have underscored the critical need for the construction of a bypass in Killarney.
Data on average daily traffic flow on the current bypass reveals that it carries significantly more vehicles than even the busy M7 motorway near Moneygall.
According to the data, released by Kerry Sinn Fein TD Pa Daly, the Killarney by-
2024 series will feature Jimmy Buckley, Mike Denver, and Barbara Fairchild.
pass handles an average of 19,400 vehicles per day.
This figure surpasses the traffic volume on the M7, which sees approximately 13,300 vehicles daily.
The data further highlights that the Killarney bypass experiences even heavier traffic during the summer months, when the town attracts a larger influx of tourists and residents.
Later episodes will introduce new artists to the Opry stage, including Eurovision winner Dana, Frances Black, and rising stars like Gavin Gribben, Chrissy Mac, Lauren Mc Crory, Onóir, and Meadhbh Walsh.
Tune in to TG4 on Tuesday, October 1, at 9:30pm to catch the premiere of ‘Opry le Daniel ar Thuras’ and enjoy a night of great country music.
Route reveal imminent
The long-awaited announcement of the preferred route for the Killarney and Farranfore bypass is imminent.
Senior Council officials confirmed at last Friday's meeting of the Killarney Municipal District that the chosen route will be publicly displayed in the town hall and online by the end of next month or early November.
Cllr Niall Kelleher sought an update on the N22 road project's timeline at the meeting.
Senior Engineer Paul Curry informed the meeting that the preferred corridor had been identified and would be presented to the public in the coming weeks.
Despite this progress, the project re-
mains a significant undertaking. The N22 Project is being developed in accordance with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) guidelines, and the current funding allocation only covers Phase 2 (route option selection).
To advance the project to subsequent stages, additional funding will be necessary. The project was included in TII's latest round of funding, enabling the narrowing down of options to a single preferred corridor.
Councillor Kelleher expressed his desire for a more expedited timeline for the various phases involved in the project. Mayor of Killarney Councillor Maura Healy Rae stated the importance of finalising the preferred route to provide clarity for landowners along the other potential routes.
Kerry Mountain Rescue opens base extension
Kerry Mountain Rescue has officially opened its new extended base on the grounds of Killarney Garda Station.
The expansion provides additional space for equipment, vehicles, training, and facilities, enhancing the team's capabilities to respond to emergencies in the region. The new base was officially opened by retired team member Christy McCarthy on Friday.
The timing was particularly significant as the team was immediately called into ac-
tion to respond to two separate incidents on Carrauntoohil the following day.
Two walkers were injured on the challenging Devil's Ladder section of the mountain. Kerry Mountain Rescue volunteers stretched their resources to assist both casualties, demonstrating their dedication and expertise in mountain rescue operations.

Kelly condemns Taliban's oppression of Afghan women
Seán Kelly, MEP for Ireland South and Leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament, has strongly condemned the Taliban's escalating oppression of women in Afghanistan.
Ballydowney-based Kelly is calling for decisive international action to address the grave human rights violations being perpetrated under Taliban rule.
"The situation for women and girls in Afghanistan is absolutely appalling," Kelly said. "Since the Taliban regained power in 2021, we have witnessed a systematic campaign to erase women from public life. The restrictions on education, work, and basic freedoms are a clear attempt to impose gender apartheid."
Kelly highlighted the Taliban's radical interpretation of Sharia law, which has led to rampant gender persecution, as a major concern for the international community.
"We must unequivocally condemn these actions," he said. "This isn't just about denying women their rights; it's about systematically oppressing them. Afghan
women are being silenced, and it is our duty to be their voice."
Referring to this week's meeting at the United Nations, Kelly emphasised the importance of international cooperation in supporting Afghan women.
"The voices of Afghan women were heard at the UN, and it's crucial that we continue to amplify them. We cannot let this regime continue its atrocities without consequence," Kelly said, citing the UN's role in opposing gender-based discrimination.
Kelly also called for the European Union to take a leading role in holding the Taliban accountable for their crimes.
"The EU must do more. We need an independent investigative mechanism to ensure justice is served. The Taliban must be held responsible for their crimes against humanity," he added.
Anyone for (indoor) tennis?
The Killarney Pickleball Club is celebrating a major milestone with the success of its member, Michael Lyne, at the Portuguese Open held in Vilamoura last weekend.
In his first-ever pickleball tournament, Lyne partnered with Gary Perry from Bermuda to reach the finals of the over 60 men's doubles.
Despite being a relatively new player, Lyne's 50 years of experience in badminton proved invaluable.
Although he narrowly missed out on
the gold medal in the doubles, Lyne also competed in the over 50 singles and reached the bronze medal playoff.
The Killarney Pickleball Club, which was established last year, now plays every Thursday evening at 8pm in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre.
The club welcomes players of all ages and abilities and offers a fun and social atmosphere.
Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of tennis and badminton.

Renewed calls for Fitzgerald Stadium funding
Cllr Michael Cahill has reiterated his calls for increased funding to redevelop Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney.
His plea comes on the heels of a significant announcement this week, which saw over €13.6 million in sports grants distributed to 140 clubs across Kerry.
The Community Sports Facilities Fund, formerly known as the Sports Capital Grants, has allocated funds for various
projects including new pitches, dressing rooms, and sports halls.
While the current grants range from €3,000 to over €500,000, Cahill has expressed his hope that some of these funds can be directed towards the stadium's redevelopment in the in next year’s allocation.
"Fitzgerald Stadium has the potential to be a magnificent venue, not only for international sporting events but also for
concerts and other cultural activities," said Cahill. "Such a development would significantly boost tourism in Killarney and Kerry as a whole, benefiting businesses throughout the county."
The politician urged both the Government to support Kerry County Board's efforts to redevelop the stadium, emphasising the need for a "state-of-the-art" facility.
Cahill highlighted the potential benefits
of hosting international soccer and rugby matches, as well as music concerts, which could attract visitors from far and wide.
"A redeveloped Fitzgerald Stadium would not only benefit Killarney but would have a positive impact on the entire county," Cahill added. "It would be a significant boost to tourism and local businesses, and would solidify Kerry's position as a premier destination for sporting and cultural events."

Killarney Celebrates culture night with a magical street spectacle
A captivating 10-foot street puppet of Peig Sayers, the renowned Irish writer and folklorist from the Blasket Islands, was a highlight of Culture Night activities in Killarney.
The puppet, Aistear Pheig Mhór, accompanied by gannets, naomhóga, and shoals of mackerel (all symbols of island life on the Blaskets), paraded through the streets, drawing crowds of young and old.
The spectacle was made possible thanks to the collaboration of 32 performers and West End House School of Acting. Culture Night, a countywide celebration of arts, culture, and creativity, took place on September 20.
In Kerry, the Arts Office of Kerry County Council, co-funded by the Arts Council and Creative Ireland, coordinated over 50 free cultural events at 45 locations across the county. The favourable weather contributed to a lively atmosphere, ensuring record attendance for the diverse range of offerings, which included music, dance, storytelling, visual arts, historical talks, street spectacles, circus art, fashion, and theatre.
"Culture Night is a unique opportunity to celebrate and appreciate what Kerry has to offer in terms of arts, culture, and creativity," said. Kate Kennelly, Arts Officer for Kerry County Council. "I'd like to thank our artists, arts venues, community groups, and organizations that made this year's Culture Night so special."
The street spectacle featuring Peig Sayers was just one of the many highlights of Culture Night in Kerry.

St. Brigid's Presentation students immerse themselves in Bordeaux
A group of students from St. Brigid's Presentation Secondary School recently embarked on a memorable trip to Bordeaux, France, to enhance their French language skills and experience French culture firsthand. Accompanied by three teachers, the students spent four days exploring the vibrant city.
Their adventure began with a guided walking tour, allowing them to appreciate the city's rich history and unique atmosphere.
They also enjoyed a scenic boat trip along the Garonne River and had free time to shop on Rue St Catherine, Europe's longest pedestrian street. On the second day, the group visited a local French bakery, a highlight for many students. They then ventured to the charming
seaside town of Arcachon, where they explored Bunker 502 and learned about World War II history.
The students also tackled the impressive Dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe.
The trip also included a visit to the Bassin des Lumières, where breathtaking art projections captivated the students.
On the final day, they enjoyed a visit to the Futuroscope Theme Park, a science-themed amusement park with interactive exhibits and thrilling rides. Throughout their trip, the students had the opportunity to practice their French language skills and experience authentic French cuisine. They sampled delicious local treats like canalés, a traditional French pastry.

AIB's rate cuts may spark mortgage war
AIB has once again lowered its fixed mortgage rates, fuelling expectations of a broader price war among Irish lenders. This marks the third-rate reduction by the bank this year, benefiting both new buyers and existing customers coming off fixed-rate deals. The move comes after the European Central Bank (ECB) announced its second interest rate cut of the year. AIB's decision to reduce its key "green rates" and four-year fixed rate by 0.25 percentage points each has prompted speculation that other banks may follow suit.
AIB's green mortgage rates, which are available for properties with a BER rating of B3 or higher, are particularly attractive due to their lower interest rates. The bank's five-year green rate is now available from as low as 3.2%, while the four-year fixed rate for mortgages over €250,000 is available from 3.7%.
In addition to the rate cuts, AIB has extended its approval in principle period to 12 months, providing customers with more time to find and purchase
their new homes. The bank is also offering a €3,000 switcher cash offer to customers who meet the criteria and wish to avail of one of its fixed rates.
Geraldine Casey, AIB's managing director of retail banking, emphasized the bank's commitment to offering customers a wide range of choice, value, and convenience. She noted that this is the second time AIB has reduced mortgage rates in 2024.
While AIB's rate cuts have generated optimism, it remains to be seen whether other lenders will follow suit.
Japan acquits world's longest-serving death row inmate away Home
A Japanese court has overturned the conviction of Iwao Hakamada, who had spent 48 years behind bars, including over 45 years on death row.
This acquittal makes him the world's longest-serving death row inmate to be exonerated.
Hakamada was originally accused of a 1966 multiple murder and arson case. Despite maintaining his innocence, he confessed to the crimes under duress during a violent police interrogation. Over
the years, numerous inconsistencies and questionable evidence emerged, casting doubt on the validity of his conviction.
One of the key pieces of evidence against Hakamada was a set of blood-stained clothing found at his home. However, experts later determined that the bloodstains were likely fabricated, as clothing soaked in miso for an extended period would become too dark to retain visible blood marks. Additionally, DNA analysis revealed that the blood on the clothing did not match Hakamada's. The case was further complicated by the
Biden announces $8 billion military assistance package for Ukraine
U.S. President Joe Biden this week announced a military aid package for Ukraine worth $7.9 billion.
The new package will include an additional Patriot air defence battery, unmanned aerial systems, and air-to-ground munitions, as well as funds to strengthen Ukraine’s defence industrial base and support its maintenance and sustainment requirements.
Washington will also provide Kyiv with the Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) munition "to enhance Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities," Biden said while also announcing the expansion of training for Ukrainian pilots
"Through these actions, my message is clear: The United States will provide Ukraine with the support it needs to win this war," The US President said.
Commenting on the support, Volodymyr Zelensky said in a social media post. "I am grateful to U.S. President Joseph Biden, the U.S. Congress and both parties, Republican and Democrat, and the entire American people for today's announcement of significant defence aid to Ukraine totaling $7.9 billion and the imposition of sanctions against Russia."
discovery that the trousers submitted as evidence were too small for him to wear. These discrepancies, coupled with the questionable circumstances surrounding his confession, led to a series of appeals and retrials.
Hakamada's sister, Hideko Hakamada, played a crucial role in seeking justice for her brother. In 2008, she initiated a second appeal, which eventually led to a retrial in 2023. Despite his advanced age and frail health, Hakamada was released from prison in 2014 pending the outcome of the retrial.
British twins aim to smash world pumpkin record
A pair of twin brothers are anxiously awaiting the results of a weigh-in that could potentially shatter the world record for the largest pumpkin. Ian and Stuart Paton, both 63, have cultivated a colossal squash that they believe could weigh as much as a rhinoceros.
The brothers, who have been growing pumpkins for an impressive 50 years, are confident that their latest creation will surpass the current world record. The enormous vegetable, which they estimate to weigh over 1.1 tonnes, is the result of cloning a "monster" pumpkin they produced two years ago. Photographs of the twins' pumpkin showcase its immense size. Ian, from Lymington in the New Forest, revealed that they have a total of four pumpkins to be weighed this year. "Two of them have a fighting chance of breaking the record, one has a good chance, and two are definite contenders," he stated. "They're absolutely massive, it's unbelievable."
The current world record for the heaviest pumpkin stands at 2,749 pounds, set last year by Travis Gienger at the
New online vehicle ownership transfers service
A new online service has been launched in Ireland to simplify the transfer of vehicle ownership between private individuals.
The initiative eliminates the need for the traditional methods, which involved either sending the Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC) by post to the Department of Transport's offices in Shannon or visiting a motor tax office in person. Now, with a few clicks, you can access real-time and accurate details about the vehicle directly from the official vehicle register. This crucial information includes the vehicle's make, model, and colour, along with its motor tax status, test status (whether it has passed its recent inspection), the number of previous owners, and even whether it was
imported. In Ireland, there are approximately one million vehicle ownership changes annually, with private sales accounting for roughly half of that number.
The Online Change of Vehicle Ownership service is readily accessible. You can initiate the transfer process by visiting either https://www.vehicleservices.gov. ie/cvo/ or the familiar www.motortax.ie website.
Safeway World Championship Pumpkin
Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, California. Ian confidently predicts that their two largest pumpkins will exceed 2,600 pounds.
The twins meticulously measure their pumpkins using various methods, including circumference, length, and width. They then carefully weigh them on a scale. The two most promising pumpkins will be measured approximately four weeks before the official weigh-in.
The patons will compete in the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth, a global competition that includes weigh-ins in countries as diverse as Australia and Alaska.
The brothers have dedicated half a century to growing pumpkins, and they acknowledge that the process has evolved over time. "It used to be simpler, but now it's more technical," Ian explained. "Once you start growing them, it's hard to stop."
To achieve such enormous size, the twins' pumpkins require approximately 300 liters of water per day. They transport these massive vegetables to competitions using a four-wheel drive vehicle and a trailer.
New research unveils inheritance trends in Ireland
A significant portion of Irish adults have been fortunate enough to receive substantial gifts or inheritances, according to a recent survey conducted by Amárach on behalf of the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI).
More than a third of respondents revealed that they have been the recipients of such windfalls, highlighting the prevalence of intergenerational wealth transfers in the country.
Among those who have received gifts or inheritances, a considerable number have used these funds to make significant investments in their own homes. Approximately one-third of recipients indicated that they allocated a portion of their inheritance towards purchasing or building their primary residence.
The survey also shed light on the most common sources of these gifts and inheritances. Parents emerged
as the primary donors, accounting for a substantial 70% of the total. Other relatives contributed 23%, while grandparents followed closely behind at 16%. This underscores the strong familial bonds and the importance of intergenerational support within Irish society.
In terms of the nature of the gifts and inheritances, money was the most prevalent form, received by 81% of recipients. Additionally, 22% acquired dwellings, while 11% received land. The survey's findings come at a time when the Irish Government is facing increasing pressure to reform inheritance tax rules. Many argue that the current rules are overly restrictive, especially given the significant rise in asset values, particularly property, in recent years. While Minister for Finance Jack Chambers has ruled out the complete abolition of inheritance tax, there is growing expectation that the tax-free threshold for children inheriting from parents could be increased.

Glenflesk and Raheen Schools conquer Rome on Erasmus trip
Following a successful trip to Rome last week, pupils, teachers, and parents from Glenflesk National School and Raheen National School can confidently say they have conquered the Eternal City.
A group of 93 people from both schools embarked on the trip as part of an Erasmus project.
"It was an action-packed week for the children as Rome has so much to offer," said a delighted Principal of Glenflesk National Scholl, Paul Favier.
The primary goal of the trip was to visit a partner school in Rome. The schools were fortunate to secure funding under the Erasmus Programme, allowing their pupils to travel for free.
Joan Mullane, Principal of Raheen NS, highlighted the fantastic day the children had at the Italian school.
The group also explored some of Rome's most famous landmarks, including the Vatican, the Colosseum, the Trevi Foun-
tain, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, and several basilicas.
One of the aims of Erasmus programmes is Life Learning and traveling to Rome provided an excellent opportunity to achieve this.
While the trip included educational and cultural activities, the children also had plenty of downtime in their campsite.
"After a busy day in the city, the children really enjoyed the swimming pools, slides, arcade, crazy golf, and other amenities," added Paul.
Foreign travel with peers is something the pupils in both schools are familiar with. They previously enjoyed a successful trip to Spain in May 2023, and there was strong interest in another similar trip.

"None of this would be possible without the support of our parents. Having them with us on the trip added to the experience for everyone involved," added Mr Favier.
Both schools hope to continue building on their existing partnership by applying for another Erasmus-funded project in the next 6-12 months.

New Road Safety Matters programme aimed at Transition year students
Minister for Education Norma Foley has just launched the new Road Safety Matters transition year (TY) programme designed to help students become safer road users.
It was developed in partnership with the Road Safety Authority and supported by An Garda Siochana. The programme has been developed to support TY students and teachers further, offering a step-bystep guide to prepare, educate and help students on their road safety journey. Pupils participating in the programme will learn the importance of sharing the road and developing the knowledge, skills, values and qualities to prepare them as road
users and as safe drivers if they decide to drive in the future. There are 10 modules in the programme including an overview session, learning to drive, components of a car, speed, alcohol, drugs, distractions, safety belts, vulnerable road users and an assessment. The Road Safety Matters programme can be taught over a 10-week period or longer depending on a school's transition year timetable. It will be introduced initially in 143 schools
nationwide.
Speaking at the launch Minister for Education Norma Foley said: "The new Road Safety Authority TY programme is a very important road safety awareness resource for schools. With this new programme, we are taking a big step forward in terms of education for a critical age group of road users. Good quality, evidence-based road safety education at the second level is arguably the most efficient and effective way, over time, to equip the entire population with a good understanding of their roles and responsibilities."
A road safety toolkit will also be made

The current housing market is a significant concern for many voters, and recent data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) highlights the ongoing price increases.
Residential property prices nationwide rose by 8.5% in the year to the end of June, marking the highest rate of inflation since October 2022. The monthly rate of increase has also been acceler-
ating, with prices rising by 0.7% in June compared to 0.4% in May.
In Kerry, average house prices increased by 9.4% in the year to June, with a particularly sharp rise of approximately 15% in the price of second-hand three-bedroom semi-detached houses. This growth rate slightly outpaced the national average of 8.5%.
The median national house price now stands at over 10% above its peak during the property boom in mid-2007.
The demand for housing remains strong, with first-time buyers accounting for
35% of the market in June. Properties are selling at a rapid pace, with the average marketing period now just 6 weeks. Local real estate agent Ted Healy of DNG reports a high demand for well-located properties in Killarney town, with many properties selling quickly. The shortage of available properties in the market has contributed to the sustained price increases, particularly in Killarney. DNG is actively seeking properties for sale in the Killarney area to meet the demand from their growing list of cash and approved buyers.

One Parent Family Payment
The One-Parent Family Payment is a social welfare program that supports single parents, both men and women under 66, raising children without a partner's financial assistance. This benefit helps to alleviate the financial burden of single parenthood by providing a regular income stream.
ELIGIBILITY FOR THE ONE-PARENT FAMILY PAYMENT
To qualify for the OFP, you must meet several essential criteria:
Age: Be under the age of 66.
Parental Role: Be the biological parent, step-parent, adoptive parent, or legal guardian of a child under a specific age limit (explained later).
Primary Caregiver: Be the main carer for at least one qualified child who lives with you. The OFP is not available if parents have joint custody.
Means Test: Pass a means test, which assesses your income and determines the payment amount.
Residency: Live in Ireland and meet the habitual residence conditions.
Marital Status: Not be cohabiting (living together as a couple without marriage or civil partnership) or receiving proper financial support from a former spouse or civil partner. Exceptions apply for separated individuals and those whose spouse/partner is incarcerated for at least six months.
AGE LIMIT FOR QUALIFIED CHILDREN
Generally, you must have at least one child under 7 years old to receive the OFP.
However, some exceptions exist:
Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA): You can get OFP for a child aged 7 or over if you also receive DCA, half-rate Carer's Allowance, or Blind Pension. Loss of Spouse/Partner: If the OFP application follows the death of your spouse/partner, you might receive the benefit for 2 years.
Reaching the Age Limit: Once your youngest child reaches the age limit (typically 7), your OFP payments will stop. You may be eligible for the Jobseeker's Transitional Payment, which supports single parents with children aged 7-13.
HOW INCOME AFFECTS YOUR OFP
The OFP is means-tested, meaning the Department of Social Protection (DSP) assesses all your income sources. Your overall income must fall below a specific threshold to qualify. The means test considers income from employment, savings, investments, and certain types of property (excluding your primary residence). The first €20,000 of your
capital is disregarded. Maintenance payments received are also factored in, but child maintenance payments are now excluded from the OFP means test (as of June 6, 2024).
The first €165 of your gross weekly earnings are not considered when calculating income for the means test. However, half of the remaining gross earnings are assessed, potentially resulting in a reduced OFP amount. Social security contributions, superannuation/PRSA contributions, and trade union subscriptions are not included in the gross earnings calculation.
Citizens Information Centre (CIC) –Your Resource
For personalized guidance on how the means test applies to your unique circumstances, contact your local Citizens Information Centre (CIC). They can estimate your potential OFP amount.
EDUCATION AND OFP
You can continue receiving the OFP while pursuing education. You can either transfer to the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) or remain on your current payment and apply for a student grant. Each option has its advantages, so researching with your local CIC is recommended.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
The OFP program can be combined with other social welfare benefits like the Household Budget Scheme (managing bills), Fuel Allowance (heating assistance), Working Family Payment (income support), Back to School Clothing & Footwear Allowance (clothing and footwear assistance for school children), Medical Card (healthcare access), and rent assistance (depending on your circumstances). Working Family Payment is excluded from the income assessment for OFP.
APPLICATION PROCESS
The application process for the OFP depends on your marital status: Widowed/Surviving Civil Partner: Apply within three months of your spouse/partner's death. Single: Apply within three months of your child's birth.
Separated/Divorced/Civil Partnership Dissolved: Be living apart for at least three months before applying. Prisoner's Spouse/Civil Partner: Apply when your spouse/partner has been in custody for at least six months without sentencing or starts their sentence (minimum six months).
For additional information or clarification on any aspect of the OFP, visit the Citizens Information Service website (www.citizensinformation.ie) or call the office in Killarney on 0818 07 7820.

FOLEY

They say that memories are golden, Well maybe that is true, But we never wanted memories, We only wanted you.
Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you.
We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed and sore, We did our duty to the end, ‘Til we could do no more.
In tears we watched you sinking, We watched you fade away, And though our hearts were breaking, We knew you could not stay.
Our lips cannot speak how we loved you, Our hearts cannot tell what to say, But God only knows how we miss you, In our home that is lonely today.
So dearly loved and sadly missed by husband Seán, daughters Siobhán, Caroline, Corrina, and Mary Frances, sons-in-law Eoghan, Peter, John and Justin, and grandchildren James, Emma and Devin.

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. RF

East Kerry and Crokes march on to last eight
Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on Round 2 of the Kerry Senior Football Championship
The race for the Bishop Moynihan Cup is heating up as the contenders jockey for position, but the defending champions are looking as comfortable as ever…
East Kerry 0-16
Milltown/Castlemaine 0-6
Champions East Kerry strolled through this curtain raiser at Austin Stack Park last Sunday, showing exactly why they are champions.
In fairness to Milltown/Castlemaine, they battled bravely but did not have the necessary calibre of players to test East Kerry. The architect of their downfall,
especially in the early stages, was Fossa’s Clifford. Not David on this occasion but his older brother Paudie. He set the tone in the first 10 minutes with four points (two from play, a free and a 45). He was their top scorer on the day, ending up with seven points - and indeed he could have gone into double digits.
The younger brother David had a quiet game by his high standards but still hit four points.
There was never any doubt about the outcome as East Kerry had so many options on the field and on a very strong
bench. While the Cliffords were doing most of the damage, Milltown/Castlemaine frittered away their scoring opportunities.
Former Kerry goalkeeper Brian Kelly was never in trouble and got his kickout strategy as accurate as ever. The defence snuffed out any dangers, particularly centre men Dan O’Brien and Cian Lynch, both from Glenflesk.
Jerry O'Sullivan was able to empty the bench and give game time to Kieran O’Sullivan, Seán O’Leary, Paul O’Shea, Cian O’Shea and Finbarr Murphy.
The game was a foregone conclusion as East Kerry strolled to inevitable victory and re-established themselves as firm favourites to retain the Bishop Moynihan Cup.
Dr Crokes 1-16
Mid Kerry 1-8
In the second fixture of Sunday’s double header in Tralee, Dr Crokes went straight into the quarter-finals after this clear-cut win over the fancied Mid Kerry who have been beaten county finalists in recent years.
Crokes’ victory was built on the solid foundation of team play. Of course, there were brilliant individual displays by Tony Brosnan and David Shaw, but the Pat O’Shea strategy of teamwork all over the field was the blueprint for this victory. Whenever a Crokes player won possession he had the immediate backup from teammates and options galore.
When it came to scoring there were no Holy Mary long-range efforts from positions where the percentage was too low to gamble. The best-placed player pulled the trigger and Dr Crokes kicked no wide until the 41st minute.
Playing into the John Mitchels’ End with the aid of a breeze, they made every post a winner. The build-up was patient but when the opportunity arose the long ball into the scoring forwards Shaw and Brosnan reaped rich dividends.
Mid Kerry designated the experienced Pa
Kilkenny as Brosnan’s marker and also played a variety of sweepers in front of the Crokes talisman, but he outsmarted them time and again, scoring 1-5 in the opening 20 minutes.
The goal was the score that pushed Crokes well ahead. Quick-thinking Cian McMahon delivered a great pass to Brosnan who seemed to be well-closed down by the Mid Kerry defence, but after a quick shimmy he sent a powerful low shot to the left of Seán Coffey who made a great effort to stop it. Fortunately for Crokes, the pinpoint accuracy and force yielded the goal.
Mid Kerry were down a man when Keith Evans was black-carded for the 10 minutes before half-time. A well-taken goal by Ciarán Kennedy, who wiggled his way in from the left, and the accuracy of Eoghan Hassett kept last year’s runners-up in the game.
One expected Mid Kerry to wipe out that deficit with the aid of the firm breeze blowing into the Horan’s End in the second half. They were just 1-10 to 1-4 behind at the break. However, the divisional side were denied by their Killarney opponents, despite being thrown a real lifeline in the 48th minute when Brian Looney received a red card following a second yellow.
Remarkably, it was Crokes’ 14 who prospered instead, delivering the points to win easily by 1-18 to 1-8, with Mid Kerry failing to score in the final 20 minutes.
The top scorer was Brosnan on 1-7 (1-4 from play), while Shaw was also superb, shooting four points. Micheál Burns was a provider but also chipped in 0-3. Tom Doyle and veteran Daithí Casey added a point each.
Much was expected from the Mid Kerry midfielders, Liam Smith and Seán O’Brien

- the latter is a member of the Kerry panel - but O’Shea and Keating won that battle for Crokes.
Eoghan Hassett was Mid Kerry’s chief scorer with three points from play and three frees. Crokes' defence played solidly throughout.
Elsewhere in the winners’ round, Templenoe had a fine win over Shannon Rangers (1-12 to 1-16) and St Brendan’s defeated St Kieran’s by a point (2-14 to 2-13).
BIG WIN FOR KENMARE
In the losers’ round, Spa beat Na Gaeil by 4-8 to 2-10; Dingle came back into the frame after a 0-13 to 0-7 win over a poor South Kerry side; Kenmare, who must have been smarting over their first round defeat, blitzed Shannon Rangers
3-20 to 1-13; and Rathmore showed their pedigree to advance past West Kerry (116 to 1-11).
The winners from the losers’ round and the losers from the winners’ round now meet in Round 3 this weekend. On Saturday, Spa face St Kieran’s in Milltown at 3pm and Shannon Rangers take on Rathmore in Castleisland at 4pm. On Sunday, Dingle go up against Milltown/ Castlemaine in Strand Road at 2pm and the tie of the round sees Mid Kerry meet Kenmare Shamrocks in Lewis Road at 3pm.
The victorious teams will advance to the last eight where East Kerry, Dr Crokes, Templenoe and St Brendan’s await. The quarter-final matches will take place next weekend (October 5/6).
CASH AND CARD
Full credit to the Kerry County Board for the presentation of last Sunday’s double header in Tralee and for providing admission to the games by cash or card as well as the prepaid online purchasing option. The reasons why this column advocated this compromise have been well covered in the past. I realise that the central GAA body wants all pre-match sales online. Fair dues to Kerry for displaying common sense. Common sense isn’t all that common in this world.
There is another aspect to this burning question of why certain people are not attending matches. Quite simply a high percentage of dyed-in-the-wool lifelong supporters are not going because they are fed up of the pass the parcel game dominating the GAA scene at local and at national levels.
Over two years ago I reported on my conversations with a man on the terrace who swore he would not go to another football match. It was not football, he said, but more like basketball or soccer, played by athletes who ran all over the pitch clocking up miles (or is it kilometres?) on the GPS. Blanket defences, 13 men behind the ball, goalies kicking 69% of the kickouts twenty-five yards at most to either corner back who sent it back, and then the passing hither and thither. Lateral passing they call it. How long does it take paint to dry? Painstaking. Stay at home.
I am aware that Jim Gavin and his committee are working hard to bring football back into the modern game. The hands have taken over from the foot and the mark is not fit for purpose.
Football can be brought back to its former greatness and appeal. Then our friend on the terrace and the other missing spectators will return. Political parties who bypass grassroots face defeat; the GAA needs to cop on and realise what those pioneering men founded in Thurles when it was anything but safe to take on the then foreign authorities.
The efforts of Gavin and the realisation that not all GAA spectators are cashless in their dealings will be a start on the way back for football. Let’s say it once again, common sense is not that common after all.
Howard: I want us to win the league
This week Adam Moynihan caught up with new Scotts Lakers Head Coach Ron Howard ahead of the new National League season, which gets underway on October 5
Welcome to Killarney, Ron. What are your first impressions of the town?
The town is amazing. Last week I went to Ross Castle to see the sights there and get in the lake. And I actually stayed in for a while, even though it was cold! It was a good day. Everyone is so welcoming and I'm grateful to be around good, genuine people.
It’s not your first time living abroad… No, I played professionally for 13 years so I’ve lived my whole adult life overseas. I was in China, Mexico, Germany for seven and a half years, Bulgaria, Romania… I was able to experience all types of different places and learn that people are just the same, no matter where they’re from.
Can you tell me about your background in basketball, going back to when you were growing up in the States?
I was born in California and played all of my basketball growing up in California. In high school I led the state in scoring in 2002. From there, I went on and had a really good collegiate career. I bounced around a lot of different colleges, but finally landed at a school called Maple State North Dakota. I'm in the Hall of Fame there and was able to win Conference Championships and play in a National Championship game. From there I started my pro career in the NBA Development League (now called the G League), and I played there for a little stint. But then I knew that if I wanted to truly start playing some pro ball, I gotta take myself overseas. So I went to China and signed for the Zhejiang Cyclones. It was amazing over there. The basketball is at a super high level, and now it's grown even more.
What is your role with St Paul’s? Because it extends beyond the senior men’s team, doesn’t it?
Yes, I'm the senior men's Head Coach and I'm also the Director of Youth Development. So that means I’m in charge of the whole development of the youth programme. When I was looking for a team, I only wanted to go somewhere I would have control over the entire programme so we're not only building that senior team up, we’re also having a big impact on the youth. That's where it's at.
This team I have is a whole new team. The style of play is going to be very different to what you’ve seen in the past here.
The youth is always the future and that’s where we need to be focussing in on.
What have you made of the standard of talent here?
I understand that basketball isn't the first sport here in Ireland and I know it's not the second or third neither, but it's at a level that they want to grow. I would compare the Super League here to Germany's Regionalliga, their fourth tier. The Super League is highly competitive and they do get Americans at a high standard, but the level isn't as good as I would have expected it to be. But, again, it's a growing country when it comes to basketball, and they've been showing that the last four years.
I see you on Instagram working with the club’s new international players, male and female. What can you tell me about them? What are they going to bring to the table?
With Patrick Lanipekun, we got a local guy. A guy that was born here, left and then came back. So that’s a community guy. He won a championship with the Irish U18 team and he’s a great player. He’s going to be my point guard and the leader of the team. Mikah Blackwell is a funny guy, a guy that you're going to love. He came from a school called Arizona Christian, so he has a good dynamic background with morals and values that he believes in. That, for me, is awesome. He's a two-time Defensive Player of the Year so that means he brings defence automatically, and an energy that is not going to be matched.
As for the girls, we got Megan Ormiston who is also from California so it’s cool that we’ve got that connection. She played at the University of Santa Barbara and then played her graduate year at the University of Nevada, Reno. She's about 6’2” or 6’3” and is a good back-to-the-basket player. And then Gracen Kerr at point guard, I love her game. It’s nice to be able to work with them all four days a week, to tune up their skills and show them some more things to put in their toolbox. I think they're going to be great.
What are your expectations for the Lakers this season?
I want to be promoted. I want us to win
the league. I feel that what we have will be able to do that. I've watched so much film on our team, before I even accepted the job, and I just felt that last year things went through the Americans and the Americans didn't give us anything. They might have put a lot of points on the board but they didn't give us anything on the defensive end and they didn't make our Irish players feel part of the team. For me, playing defence is non-negotiable. This team I have is a whole new team. The style of play is going to be very different to what you’ve seen in the past here. We're going to run a lot, we're going to play real physical. We're going to show that this town, Killarney, is to be respected, and that this is a place for basketball.
How will you blend the foreign and local players into your starting lineup?
I'm comfortable and I'm confident with my local guys because I believe that I’ve got some of the best local guys in the country. They just haven't been pushed, and they haven't been given that confidence to be able to play.
Will there be at least two local starters?
Oh yeah. We're going to run off with Rui Saraiva as my big man and right now I'm
in the midst of deciding who else do I want to come out there and start. I love Eoin Carroll, I love Jack O’Sullivan, and I love Jamie O’Sullivan’s game right now. Jamie's getting in unbelievable shape. I'm confident in my young guys.
Are you excited for next weekend’s big tip-off away to the Waterford Vikings?
I am, man. I'm more than excited. I'm anxious to see my guys get after it. We’re preparing by playing Tralee and Killorglin this week. I wanted to play Super League teams to get that feel of how it is at that top level because I want our guys to bring that level every night.
Do you have a message for the local Lakers supporters?
This is a different team, it will be a different type of basketball, and a different level of coaching. This is something that you will want to be a part of.
Best of luck for the season, Ron, and thanks for your time. Thanks Adam. I appreciate you.

O’Carroll lands Premier League coaching role
Killarney man Diarmuid O’Carroll has sealed a massive move to Premier League giants Newcastle United where he will take over as lead coach of the club’s U21 team.
O’Carroll, who hails from Ross Road and played for Killarney Athletic at schoolboy level, has made the switch from Scottish side St Mirren where he was assistant manager to Stephen Robinson. He previously held positions at Morecambe and Motherwell.
The ambitious 37-year-old has also been coaching the Northern Ireland senior men’s team under Michael O’Neill since 2023 and the IFA and Newcastle have confirmed that he will continue in that role in addition to taking on his new job on Tyneside.
Signing for such a high-profile Premier League club marks a major milestone for O’Carroll, who set off on his professional football journey as a highly-rated 16-yearold prospect with Scottish giants Celtic in 2003. Spells in Belgium, Iceland, England and Northern Ireland followed before he turned his attention to coaching.
“The club speaks for itself in terms of the size, stature and fanbase,” O’Carroll told NewcastleUnited.com. “It's a really exciting time now as well with the ownership and everything that is planned going for-
ward.
“The opportunity to come in is something I would've never expected, but when it came across my desk, it was a really exciting one and a quick process.”
The former St Brendan’s College student said he will be placing an emphasis on player development and helping the club’s talented youngsters break through to Eddie Howe’s first team.
“People think it’s all about results but I’m extremely development focused. I always have been. That’s the element of the work that I enjoy. Of course we have to win games, of course we have to strive to be successful, but ultimately I’ll be judged on the development of the players. Trying to get players into the first team and trying to give them a lifelong career in the game. That’s something I’ve prided myself on and hopefully I can keep it going here.”
Newcastle United’s academy director, ex-goalkeeper Steve Harper, said he is “delighted” to have O’Carroll on board.
“He’s a young, progressive and ambitious coach, and will play a key role in supporting our talent pathway into the first team.
“We have gone through a rigorous process and in Diarmuid we have an exceptional coach and person joining us. I’d like to welcome him to the Newcastle United family.”
Boos ring out in Dublin as judges deny Cronin
Kerry boxer Kevin Cronin was on the wrong side of a controversial split decision after a brilliant performance against former Olympian Emmet Brennan at the 3Arena in Dublin on Friday.
Cronin appeared to have done more than enough to win the bout and capture the BUI Celtic Super Middleweight title but only one of the three judges scored the fight in his favour.
The Milltown man was left visibly furious after the result was announced and the crowd – who one might expect to be on the side of local lad Brennan – jeered loudly.
Brennan read the room and bristled at the notion that Cronin was robbed.
“A close fight isn’t controversial. It has to go either way. He probably did the harder work on the inside but I was blocking a lot. And then the second I was getting to middle distance I was catching him with the one-two. I had the cleaner, clearer punches. It was a tight fight. But tight fights aren’t robberies, they have to go either way.
“He’s tough. No matter what you hit him with, he’s going to keep on coming.
“In terms of my professional career, it’s the best night of my life.” Cronin was magnanimous in defeat, while also acknowledging the harsh nature of the outcome.
“Emmet, thank you for a great fight.
Nothing but respect for you and your team after that.
“I’ll let you all have your own verdict on it but I couldn’t be prouder of what me and my team showed the world. I’m battered, bruised and heartbroken and have missed out on so much life with family and friends while chasing [this] opportunity. It just breaks my heart and I think I de-
serve a lot more from boxing.”
Calling for a rematch, Cronin’s manager Michael Conlon said the Kingdom Warrior should have won by two rounds. Meanwhile, UFC CEO Dana White, who was sitting ringside (the event was live on UFC Fight Pass), said Cronin “clearly won”.
“I mean that's devastating for the kid's career. It's brutal. I don't even know if it deserves a rematch. If that was judged correctly, nobody would be screaming for a rematch. Cronin would be moving on to whatever he's going to do next if it was judged properly.
“I don't have the answers right now, but I believe Cronin won the fight.” As for what comes next, Cronin has long been angling for a big fight on Kerry soil. Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, he wrote: “The magnitude of a homecoming at this stage would be massive. Any stadium!”

Killarney Athletic
MUNSTER YOUTHS CUP: Round 1 - Killorglin 1-8 Killarney Athletic. Luke Doolan, Brian O’Shea, Liam O’Brien, Nathan Cronin. First thing to be said is that Killorglin’s U17 team were playing in the National Cup today also, so their youth team had to do without them. Half of our squad today was U17, including 5 starters, so if you take them out of our team then we’d struggle. It’s the same for all teams in Kerry. The game itself was our first for the season where we showed lots of good things and some things that need work after the Summer break. Some great finishes on show and we’ll take it and move on to our next game v Dynamos at home in 2 weeks in the first round of the National Cup. Thanks to Killorglin for a sporting game and for fulfilling the fixture under the circumstances.
U13 DIVISION 1: Killarney Athletic B 0 Kenmare A 8. The U13B boys team came up against a strong Kenmare side Saturday morning that proved to be a tough test. The final score was not a fair reflection of the balance of play and effort, and they were very unlucky not to score a few goals. No doubt the lads will learn from the experience and bounce back stronger.
U12 GIRLS SOUTH: Killorglin 1-0 Killarney Athletic A.F.C. On Saturday at 12pm, we tipped off away, against Killorglin FC. It was an evenly matched affair with both teams trying hard to get the opening goal. After a free kick down the middle, Killorglin broke through Killarney's defence to go one up. Two great clearances from Isabelle Tangney kept us within touching distance going in at half time. Abbey O’Leary was also unlucky not to equalise just before the break with some last gasp defending from Killorglin. In the second half, Athletic again tried hard with a close range shot from Julie Quinlan being saved by the keeper. Alannah McGlynn was great in midfield while Rebecca Coffey and Maebh Coughlan were solid out in defence in the second half stopping multiple breaks from Killorglin. Special mention to keeper Abbey Reidy who pulled off some wonderful saves both in the first and second half to keep Athletic in the game. Well done to all the girls for a great game. Final score 1-0 to Killorglin FC. Captain on the day, Alannah McGlynn.
U13 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic A.F.C 3-2 Iveragh FC. Sean Quill, Caelan Prendergast, Darragh O’Toole. The U13 A team had a hard fought 3-2 win against a very strong Iveragh United at home this afternoon. Sean Quill started the game with a lovely well taken goal to put Athletic up 1-0. The first half was back and forth, and the lads played well to end the half 1-0. Caelyn Prendergast’s well taken finish put the boys up 2-0, 10 minutes into the second half. Youngest boy on the pitch Darragh O’Toole had a well taken finish to put the lads up 3-0 which proved to be a crucial goal. Iveragh got back into the
game with a penalty late in the second half. They scored a late goal from a scramble to make the extra time very nervy for Athletic. The boys all bonded together and fought hard for the well-deserved 3-2 win. Man the match was birthday boy and assistant captain Ewan Marshall who made numerous fantastic saves to keep the lead for Athletic. Well done boys for a very hard-fought win and great start to the season.

Sean Lovett gave Killarney Celtic the lead on 28 mins which they held until the 76th min when Jack Kelly equalised. On to extra time ad Celtic hit the front again through Nattagun Ryan. However Newmarket came back again to force penalties, and it was Newmarket who advanced to round 2.

U16 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic 7-0 Listowel Celtic. Jack Culloty 2, Dara Horan, Samuel Scroope, Jack O’Grady, Ignacy Truchan, Sean Collins. Killarney overcame Listowel in a game played early last week after an impressive performance. Killarney led 3-0 at the break and continued to put pressure on Listowel throughout the 2nd half resulting in further goals for a clearcut win.
U15 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic 2-3 Mastergeeha. OG, Nikita Tkachenko. Celtic unfortunately came up short here after a valiant effort to come back into the game. Mastergeeha led early and always stayed ahead in the game.
U15 DIV 2: Ballyhar Dynamos 1-3 Killarney Celtic B. Simon Sirotiak 2, Fionn O’Connor. In a very entertaining game Celtic B came out on top. Celtic hit the front through Simon Sirotiak, but Ballyhar came back to level. Celtic went back in front when Fionn O’Connor goaled from close range. Simon Sirotiak goaled to extend Celtic's lead. In the 2nd half, despite many chances, neither team could find the net and so it finished 3-1 to Celtic B.
U14 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic 5-2 Killorglin AFC. Cillian Scannell 3, Emmanuel Iheme 2. A good 1st half saw Celtic take a 3-0 lead at the break. Killorglin came back but Cillian Scannell completed his hat trick to keep Celtic clear. Killorglin scored their 2nd before Emmanuel Iheme finished off a good night's work with a fine goal to ensure the win.
U13 PREMIER: Listowel Celtic 0-5 Killarney Celtic. Cillian Scannell 2, Conor Doherty 2, Sean Doyle. Killarney had a clearcut win in the battle of the Celtics. 2 goals from Cillian Scannell put Killarney clear before Conor Doherty added a brace and Sean Doyle rounded off the scoring.
U13 DIV 1: Killarney Celtic White 5-0 Tralee Dynamos. David Ajibare 3, Rowan Murphy, Eoin Murphy. Celtic put in a powerful performance to take the points on Monday night. Celtic led 3-0 at the short whistle and continued to impress in the 2nd half. 2 further goals sealed the win.

Killarney Legion GAA
SENIOR LADIES: Kilcummin will provide the opposition to our Senior ladies in the Bons Secours Junior B Championship final following a tightly contested semi-final win over Castlegregory / Annascaul. The game played at the coastal village in ideal conditions last Sunday afternoon would eventually be decided by a first half penalty, well dispatched by Ciara Randles. It gave the ladies a four-point half time cushion, 1-5 to 0-4. The westerners pushed hard in the second half, even plundering a goal in the fiftieth minute, but the advantage was maintained throughout the second period courtesy of some smart finishing and stoic defending. The final against Kilcummin will be the latest meeting in the rivalry between
the sides which has stretched over an extended period. Time, date and venue to be confirmed.
U10 GIRLS: The U10 girls enjoyed an end of season trip through the Gap of Dunloe last Sunday. The girls set off from Kate Kearney’s and walked to Lord Brandon’s cottage where they met Kerry stars Fiadhna Tangney and Hannah O’Donoghue. The girls then took the boat trip down to Ross Castle with Donal Dux O’Donoghue, where they were collected by Pat Moynihan’s Big Red Bus. The day concluded at Four Star Pizza, where the pizza was well and truly devoured.. Thanks to all the girls and coaches for a great season. Special word of thanks to Pat Moynihan, Seánie Culloty, and Donal “Dux“ O’Donoghue. A great day was had by all no doubt.
U13 GIRLS: In the U13 Kerry LGFA Club Championship, the U13s have advanced to a final after defeating Glenflesk in their own backyard on Sunday afternoon. Thank you to Glenflesk for a great sporting game and thank you to our ref and our supporters who travelled on the day. The details of the final will be confirmed in due course.
U17 LADIES: Our U17 side took the field against Rathmore on Monday evening in the County Championship quarter final played in sunny Direen. Starting brightly they dominated the early exchanges and led at half time by 4-05 to 2-05. The second half was a bit more tense and tighter, with Rathmore always pushing before we ran out winners on a score of 5-10 to 3-08. Next up is a semi-final against MKL Gaels with time, date, and venue to be confirmed.
SENIOR B TEAM: Having lost out to a fancied Rathmore side in the first round, our Senior B team made the short trip to Fossa for the Molyneaux Cup Shield semi-final. All the damage was done in the first half by the home side when it looked like they had built up an unassailable lead. But huge credit to the lads they battled away and when the final whistle there was only three points between the sides. Final score Killarney Legion 4-10 Fossa 3-16. Next up is an O’Sullivan Cup tie, away to Firies, with fixture details announced in due course.
U11 BOYS: The weather played it part in contributing to a very entertaining and sporting games for our U11 boys in Direen last Thursday evening. Rathmore provided the opposition and a good stern test for both teams which helped to produce two very good games. Thanks very much to the referees, Fergal Moynihan and one of our younger referees, Evan Cox, who did a great job officiating which lent to the entertainment. This marked the end of scheduled games for the team, and they can enjoy the last few weeks of the academy before they graduate to the big leagues after seven years on the Saturday morning shift.
Dr Crokes GAA
SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr.
Crokes 1:16 Mid Kerry 1:08. After a hardfought battle with Mid Kerry in Austin Stack Park we secured our place in the County Championship Quarter Final. We controlled the game from the beginning with Tony Brosnan picking up the first point of the game after just 1 minute of play, easing us into 5 points to 1 point lead after 10 minutes. It was in the 20th minute when Cian McMahon found Tony Brosnan who finished the ball fantastically in the back of the Mid Kerry goal. Mid Kerry responded well with a goal of their own just 2 minutes later. We went in leading 1:10 to 1:04 at the break. The second half was much like the first, with great scores from Tony Brosnan, David Shaw, Micheal Burns and Daithi Casey. We finished off the game comfortably. Next up is the Quarter Final on the weekend of October 5th.

The €40 consolation prize winners were Bernadette Kissane, Tadgh Kelly, Dominic Rintoul, Liam Walsh, Denis Myers. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online via Clubforce.
MOLYNEAUX CUP SHIELD: Legion were our opponents in the shield semifinal in Fossa on Saturday. Fossa controlled the first half and were winning their individual battles all over the field, Joe Cahillane, Anthony O’Keeffe and Ruari Doyle marshalled the defence well, Eoin Talbot and Mark Donnellan won lots of primary possession around midfield and up front Killian Buckley, Ted O’Gorman and Fintan Coffey led the line brilliantly while Tadgh O’Shea was in scintillating form. Ted O’Gorman had the ball in the Legion net after six minutes and a slew of points from Tadgh O’Shea, Kevin McCarthy, Rocco Sheehan and Ruari Doyle had Fossa in front, 1-10 to 0-1 after eighteen minutes. Legion did pull a goal back from the penalty spot, but Ted O’Gorman replied almost immediately with his second goal of the day to leave the half time score Fossa 2-12, Legion 1-03. Eoin Talbot and Tadgh O’Shea got the first two scores of the second half before Legion struck for a goal in the fifth minute. A further goal and point from Tadgh O’Shea had Fossa in complete control but then Legion made a great comeback. They kicked four points without reply and they quickly followed this up with two goals in the 23rd minute to get back in the game. They pushed hard for more goals but kicked the last three points of the game to leave the final score Fossa 3-18, Legion 4-10. Fossa will now face Laune Rangers in the final next weekend. Team: Lee Lenihan, Pauric Talbot, Cian McCarthy, Joe Cahillane, Ruari Doyle 0-1, Anthony O’Keeffe, Cian Doyle 0-1, Eoin Talbot 0-1, Mark Donnellan, Kevin McCarthy 0-2, Killian Buckley 0-1, Ted O’Gorman 2-0, Tadgh O’Shea 1-10, Fintan Coffey, Rocco Sheehan 0-1, Francis Moran, Peadar Kelliher, Ryan O’Leary, Darren Cronin, Jack Sugrue, Richard Wallace 0-1.
U15 BOYS: Fossa U15 boys were away to Dr Crokes B in the quarter final of the Division 3 East Kerry Championship. Mid-way through the opening half only a Donnacha Vaughan goal separated the teams, with Fossa leading 1-4 to 0-4. The Fossa boys went on a roll then kicking another goal and 5 points to leave the half time score 2-9 to 0-7, the vital 2nd goal coming from James O’Meara. In the second half Fossa were very clinical in front of goal with the green flag being raised a further 4 times through Mikey Moroney, Charlie Griffin, Gerry Moroney and a second from James O’Meara. Goalkeeper Dara Whelton and the Fossa rearguard had to be on their toes throughout the match as the Crokes equally created some very good goal
scoring opportunities, converting two of these. Charlie Griffin, Sam O’Leary and Morgan O’Brien were putting in a great shift around the middle of the park. Fossa closed out the game with a number of points from Eoin Bennett to win on a scoreline of 6-13 to 2-15. Best of luck to Dr Crokes in their Division 2 & 4 semi-finals. Next up for the Fossa boys is a Division 3 semi-final away to Rathmore.
