Killarney Town Council approves Lower Beech Road for new multi-story car park

The Killarney Town Council has selected the Lower Beech Road car park as the preferred location for a new multi-story parking facility.

The decision was made following a presentation by local authority engineers outlining various options and their associated costs.

The proposed development, estimated to cost €12.7 million, would add 297 parking spaces to the existing capacity of 319 spaces at the Lower Beech Road car park.

“Killarney is in need of extra parking for many years. I believe New Street car park is suitable as it will least affect residential areas, and will have the most gains , adding 300 extra spaces. I have concerns with lack of parking at Lewis Road when Aras Padraig is developed,” Cllr Martin Grady told the Killarney Advertiser.

The Lower Beech Road car park, located near the tourist office and bottle bank, was chosen over other potential sites such as Lewis Road, High Street, Fair Hill, Glebe, Rock Road, and St. Mary’s Cathedral.

While St. Mary’s Cathedral was considered, it was ultimately deemed unsuitable due to its proximity to buildings of archaeological and historical significance.

“I had concerns as a Lewis Road car park won’t be sufficient with the extra de-

mand for parking with the Aras Padraig development, and it wouldn’t be fair on the residents of Lewis Road to have a four-storey car park within metres of their homes. Lewis Road is already congested with traffic,” added Grady. A detailed financial analysis and exploration of funding streams will be conducted to ensure the feasibility of the project. Additionally, a comprehensive car parking strategy will be developed to address the town's parking needs and optimize the use of the new facility.

Killarney is in need of extra parking for many years. I believe New Street car park is suitable as it will least affect residential areas, and will have the most gains , adding 300 extra spaces.

New search and rescue helicopters take flight near Carrauntoohil

The Irish Coast Guard is gearing up for a significant upgrade to its search and rescue capabilities with the introduction of new helicopters.

The first of these state-of-the-art aircraft were recently spotted conducting training exercises over Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain.

Bristow Ireland, a leading provider of aviation services, has secured a 10-year contract with the Department of Transport to operate the new helicopters.

The contract, which includes an option for a three-year extension, will see Bristow deliver six specialised search and rescue-configured AW189 helicopters from bases in Shannon, Sligo, Waterford, and Dublin.

These helicopters are equipped with the latest technology to ensure efficient and effective search and rescue operations. They will be supported by two special-

ized King Air fixed-wing aircraft, providing additional capabilities for search and rescue and environmental monitoring. The new fleet is expected to significantly enhance the Irish Coast Guard's ability to respond to emergencies across the country.

Alan Corbett, Bristow's Chief Operating Officer, Government Services, said: "We look forward to collaborating closely with the Irish Department of Transport, Irish Coast Guard, and all stakeholders to ensure the success of this new endeavour.”

With the introduction of these new helicopters, the Irish Coast Guard is poised to provide even more comprehensive and effective search and rescue services to the people of Ireland.

“Killarney crying out for a drama venue” Cllr Cahill

Michael Cahill has called for Kerry County Council to expediate plans to finally develop the Áras Padraig drama venue on Lewis Road.

The project is set to include a 300-seat theatre space, with rehearsal, exhibition and gallery space, along with an educational space and room for office facilities.

Councillor Michael Cahill, a candidate in the upcoming General Election has said that Killarney town centre has been crying out for a drama venue for some time now and Áras Padraig is in a fabulous location.

“Given the long-time interest in drama locally and the number of visitors to Killarney annually, a drama venue in Áras

Padraig will become a vital attraction for the town. It will provide, not only entertainment for visitors and residents, but it will provide employment for actors and playwrights and will require staff to run the venue” stated Councillor Cahill.

“My campaign manager who lived in Killarney in his youth, recalls fond memories of the ‘Áras’. It once hosted school ‘hops’ and became a cinema for a time. Many shows were staged there and for a time it was home to Dóchas Drama Group and Killarney Judo Club. Killarney is the premier tourist destination in Ireland and the development of Áras Padraig can be the icing on the cake of its attractions for theatregoers,” added the South Kerry Councillor.

14 years of Nathan's Walk comes to an end

Pieta has paid tribute to Killarney local Marie O'Carroll after she decided to call time on organising Nathan's Walk after 14 years.

This year marked the final Nathan's Walk but Pieta CEO Stephanie Manahan led a special presentation recognising Marie's incredible work. Nathan's Walk was created in memory of Marie's son, Nathan O'Carroll, who died by suicide in 2007.

Over the years, Marie has been a driving force behind the event, working alongside volunteers and local businesses. The walk grew into one of Pieta's largest Darkness Into Light events, raising awareness and significant funds for sui-

cide prevention.

"Marie's dedication has brought hope to the community," said Manahan. "Her efforts leave a lasting impact. Because of Marie, countless individuals know they are not alone."

While Nathan's Walk has ended, Pieta and the community hope Darkness into Light can continue in Killarney.

Anyone interested in organising a Killarney Darkness into Light event can express interest at volunteer@pieta.ie.

Council approves new raised pedestrian crossing on Ross Road

A proposal to install a controlled raised pedestrian crossing on Ross Road has been given the green light by local councillors.

The crossing will be located just south of the junction with Castle Falls housing estate entrance and will provide improved pedestrian and cycle access between the Flesk cycleway and walkway and the existing footpath on Ross Road.

The decision was made following a council meeting on Tuesday, where councillors unanimously approved the plans.

While the proposal was advertised publicly, only one observation was received, from An Garda Siochána, who suggested changing the zebra crossing to a controlled pedestrian crossing activated by a push button.

Kerry County Council engineer David Doyle confirmed that discussions had taken place with representatives of Killarney Racecourse and Castle Falls residents to ensure the new crossing would not disrupt their activities.

A new public consultation on the future of Ireland’s National Parks was announced this week.

The initiative – titled ‘Your Parks, Your Say’ – will give members of the public and stakeholder organisations the opportunity to express their views on Ireland’s National Parks across a range of topics, from biodiversity conservation and restoration to visitor amenities, education, community engagement and legislation. Definitions of what a National Park is will also be sought.

“Under this Government, we have transformed the National Parks and Wildlife Service, increased its funding by 170% and created new National Parks for the first time in over 25 years. Now is the right moment to reflect on this progress and have a meaningful national conversation on what National Parks are and how they should be managed. There is currently no legislative underpinning for National Parks in Irish law and no definition of what a National Park is or what it’s for. This is something I’d like to see addressed on foot of this consultation,” said Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD. “It’s important that we evolve and refine our view as to what National Parks mean for Ireland.

“We are fortunate to have a network of Parks with tremendous community buyin and support. Our Parks are uniquely Irish, providing protection to a range of flora and fauna across multiple habitats in landscapes that people have lived in for thousands of years. They also provide a range of environmental, social, economic and health benefits to local communities, and are enjoyed by millions of visitors. But their future development – both in terms of ecological restoration and visitor and educational facilities – needs deep and broad consideration. As we look towards the coming decade, it is only right that we take stock of where we are and encourage people to have their say, tell us more about how they see the Parks

Have your say on the future of National Parks

and what suggestions they have for their future direction.”

The first phase of the consultation is an online questionnaire with a number of questions across seven topic areas. It will run until the end of the year, closing on December 31.

The Minister also announced that he has commenced the development of a framework for management planning across all eight National Parks and Coole Park Nature Reserve. This framework will include detailed information on each Park, including an inventory of natural and cultural resources, the challenges and opportunities that each Park faces, and how these are being addressed. Killarney musician Junior Brother announces tour

Killarney singer-songwriter Junior Brother, also known as Ronan Kealy, has announced a tour to coincide with the release of his latest music video, ‘Take Guilt’.

The tour will kick off in Dublin on October 19 and make its way across to the UK before wrapping up in York on October 27. Junior Brother will then return to Dublin on December 17 to perform at The Pogues' 40th-anniversary celebration of ‘Red Roses for Me’ at the 3Arena. ‘Take Guilt’ is one of Junior Brother's most powerful songs to date, and the accompanying music video explores the

themes of facing, feeling, and suppressing the horrors we see in the news.

This upcoming tour follows the critical acclaim of Junior Brother's first two albums, ‘Pull the Right Rope’ and ‘The Great Irish Famine'. He is currently working on his third album with producer John ‘Spud’ Murphy.

framework is developed, individual management plans will be finalised. Further public engagement will happen as each plan is developed.

The Minister said: “For the first time in a long time thanks to increased resources under this Government, we are in a position to bring people closer to the inner workings of our National Parks. I am determined to improve the ways in which information from and about our National Parks is made available to the public, and to share greater insights into their current condition and on the decision-making behind their management. By providing for deeper understanding and creating new opportunities for engagement, I hope to

dispel some of the negativity we see on social media.

Our National Parks are amazing places, staffed by incredibly dedicated and expert people who go above and beyond to protect nature and provide access to all. These vast, diverse landscapes – which co-exist alongside local communities –face a range of complex challenges. But with greater transparency, continued investment and collective action and effort, it is my hope that Irish society can see them for what they are: the jewels in the crown of our nation that should be cherished.”

Spectacular season finale at Killarney Races

The final meeting of the season took place at Killarney Racecourse on Sunday and Monday and delivered top-class racing, good crowds and a superb atmosphere.

The penultimate day of the season provided a thrilling national hunt card with seven exciting races over jumps. Eric McNamara’s purple patch continued on from the five winners he clocked up recently at Listowel when Say It So won the Ross Castle Handicap Hurdle under jockey Calum Hogan.

Tralee trainer Tom Cooper ‘kept it in the

Kingdom’ with Brave Adam claiming victory in the Ross Golf Club Beginners Chase for jockey Tom Kelly and owner Ciaran Mooney. The six-year-old is a brother to King George winner Bravemansgame.

On Monday, the official curtain closer of the season at the track, all patrons enjoyed free admission, a well-received

gesture from the management of Killarney Races gifted to their loyal racegoers as a token of their appreciation for their support throughout the season. The pace also went up a gear on the track as the flat took centre stage.

Champion jockey Colin Keane recorded a treble on the card, the final leg of which saw him register his seventh annual Irish ‘century’ of winners aboard John Murphy’s Sea Chariot in the Torc Travel Handicap. Keane said: “I was coming with nice rides and was hoping

to get one (winner) but to get three is a bonus.”

Killarney Racecourse Chairman Billy O’Sullivan commented “What a lovely meeting our two-day October fixture and seasonal finale turned out to be, with fantastic winners and a wonderful atmosphere on both days. I would like to thank all our patrons, supporters, sponsors, industry personnel and of course our wonderful team here at Killarney Racecourse without whom racing would not be possible. We enjoyed a wonderful season and plans are already underway for an even bigger and better season next year!”

In 2025, Killarney Races will host four racing festivals in May, July, August and October. Tickets for all festivals including general admission tickets, punters packs, dining and hospitality and racegoers club memberships will be available online soon at www.killarneyraces.ie.

Understanding ADHD: A guide for adults and children

In her second column for the Killarney Advertiser Una Buckley explains Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults. ADHD is one of the most common childhood disorders, but many cases persist into adulthood.

Prevalence: ADHD affects approximately 5-10% of children and around 2-5% of adults globally. It is more commonly diagnosed in boys than girls, though this may be partly due to boys showing more hyperactive symptoms, while girls may display more inattentiveness.

ADHD is typically divided into three types: (1) Inattentive, where people struggle with focus and organisation; (2) Hyperactive-Impulsive, where hyperactivity and impulsive actions are more prominent; and (3) Combined, where symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity are present.

Diagnosis and Treatment: ADHD is diagnosed through a comprehensive evaluation that includes medical history, behaviour assessments, and often interviews with teachers or family members. While there’s no cure, treatment options include behavioural therapy, medications like stimulants and lifestyle changes.

TOP TIPS TO HELP WITH ADHD

Create Structure: ADHD brains thrive on routine. Set daily schedules and stick to them as closely as possible. Using calendars, to-do lists, and reminders can help manage tasks and deadlines.

Break Tasks into Smaller Steps: Large tasks can feel overwhelming, so breaking them into smaller, managea-

ble steps makes them easier to tackle. Focus on one step at a time, which also helps sustain attention.

Use Timers and Alarms:

Timers can keep you on track, especially for activities that require sustained focus. Use alarms to signal breaks or transitions between tasks.

Practice Mindfulness:

Mindfulness exercises, such as meditation or deep breathing, can improve focus and reduce impulsive behaviour. They help train the mind to manage distractions.

Limit Distractions:

Create a workspace with minimal distractions. Turn off notifications on devices, avoid multitasking, and designate a quiet space for work or study.

Exercise Regularly:

Physical activity can help burn off excess energy, improve mood, and boost focus. Incorporating movement into your routine can be highly beneficial.

Sleep and Nutrition:

Prioritize sleep and a balanced diet. Lack of sleep can worsen ADHD symptoms, and proper nutrition can improve cognitive function and energy levels.

Calls for permanent base as Killarney Women's Shed launched

The Killarney Women's Shed, the second of its kind in County Kerry, officially launched this week.

The organisation aims to provide a supportive and inclusive space for women in the community.

Chairperson Sheila Martin, who is also the Secretary of the Phoenix Women's Shed in Tralee, expressed the growing need for such a space in Killarney.

"The response to our launch was overwhelming, with over 145 women attending our initial meeting," she said. "This clearly demonstrates the demand for a place where women can connect, learn, and support one another."

The Killarney Women's Shed offers a variety of activities, including workshops, social events, and opportunities for skill development.

Members can participate in fitness classes, creative pursuits, and informative talks.

"Our goal is to create a welcoming environment where women can feel empowered and valued," Martin explained.

"We believe that such spaces are essential for promoting community engagement and well-being."

While the Shed has been operating successfully, Martin highlighted the need for a permanent building.

"Currently, we rely on rented spaces, which can be limiting," she said. "Having our own premises would allow us to expand our programs and better serve the community."

Regan’s Family Apiary wins gold for best honey in Ireland

Regan’s Family Apiary is buzzing with excitement after winning the coveted Gold Award for the tastiest honey in Ireland at the prestigious Blas na hÉireann competition held over the weekend in Dingle.

"We are delighted to win the Gold award at Blas na hEireann having won Silver in 2021," said Tim Regan, beekeeper and owner of the apiary.

"The bees will be buzzing when I tell them that they are producing the tastiest honey in Ireland."

Regans Family Apiary attributes the unique flavour of their honey to the abundance of wild flowers found in Kerry.

"Just as the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so too is the proof of the honey in the taste," Tim said. "The nectar the bees bring back to the hive comes from these wildflowers, giving each apiary's honey a special character. We're truly blessed in Kerry with such a vast variety."

Their 100% pure, natural, and unfiltered honey undergoes a meticulous harvest

process in early September before being bottled.

"People are increasingly interested in natural foods and the health benefits they offer," added Tim. "This translates to a growing appreciation for local, unblended honey like ours."

Located on a traditional farm just outside Killarney, the Regans' apiary encompasses twenty acres of farmland bursting with bee-friendly hedgerows and a dedicated 2.5-acre Bee Meadow.

For those wanting to experience this award-winning honey, Regan’s Family Apiary offers its products various outlets, including local 5-star hotels, an honesty box at the farm, and local cafes like Blacksheep Hostel and Café and Noelle's Retro Café.

Navigating modern workplaces: Insights from The Podgecast

In a recent episode of The Podgecast, hosted by Podge O'Connor, career coach Teresa Randles joined the conversation to discuss the challenges of modern workplaces, including toxic environments and building strong career connections.

The Podgecast was launched by O’Connor in April of 2024 through the Noom Vibe app.

She discussed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on work culture, the importance of setting boundaries, and the challenges of navigating toxic work environments.

Randles and O'Connor first met while attending yoga classes at the Nave Yoga studio in Killarney, where they developed a friendly rapport.

Their shared connection to the local community and their mutual interest in personal growth led to the collaboration on The Podgecast.

"When The Podgecast was launched Teresa reached out to congratulate me and started following the podcasts.I invited her on to be a guest on The Podgecast to talk about her background in HR, workplace stress and toxic work environments,” said O’Connor.

In the podcast episode, Randles and O'Connor explored a range of topics related to modern workplaces, including the shift to remote work during the pandemic has had a significant impact on work culture.

While it has increased productivity for some, it has also made it more difficult to build and maintain strong connections with colleagues.

She also stressed that it is important to set boundaries and avoid burnout in today's fast-paced work environment. Randles emphasised the importance of taking breaks, disconnecting from work, and prioritising self-care.

She advised listeners to be aware of these red flags and to take steps to protect their mental and emotional well-being.

Randles offered practical advice on how to build a successful career, including the importance of networking, continuous learning, and self-reflection.

Florida reels after Hurricane Milton makes landfall

Hurricane Milton unleashed its fury on Florida's west coast on Wednesday night, slamming into Siesta Key as a Category 3 storm with 195 km/h winds. While weakening to a Category 1 by Thursday morning, Milton continues its destructive path across the state, bringing heavy rain, storm surges, and deadly tornadoes.

Over 3 million homes and businesses are without power at the time of writing on Thursday, with the situation

particularly dire in the Tampa Bay area, including major cities like Tampa, St Petersburg, and Clearwater. A flash flood emergency remained in place on Thursday as the region grapples with torrential downpours. Milton's wrath has been felt far beyond the coast. The storm spawned at least 19 tornadoes, causing widespread damage and destroying an estimated 125 homes, most of them mobile units. Governor Ron DeSantis confirmed at least two fatalities associ-

ated with the tornadoes.

A major tourist hub, Orlando, lies directly in Milton's path. With the iconic Disney World closed in anticipation of the storm, residents are bracing for potential impact.

This disaster comes just two weeks after Hurricane Helene ravaged Florida, leaving many residents still recovering. Millions were ordered to evacuate for Milton, adding to the already strained resources.

Son of Kinahan crime group member extradited from Spain to UK

A 24-year-old, Jack Kavanagh, the son of a member of the Kinahan crime group, has been extradited from Spain to the UK to face alleged firearms charges.

Kavanagh, who hails from Tamworth, was transferred to the UK following a National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation into his activities.

He appeared via video link at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 4 October, where he was ordered to remain in custody. Kavanagh was initially detained in May 2023 at Malaga Airport by Spanish National Police officers while traveling from Dubai to Turkey.

The charges against him relate to his alleged involvement in the supply and acquisition of firearms, based on evidence obtained from encrypted messages on the platform Encrochat. His next court appearance is scheduled for 1 November at the Old Bailey.

Meanwhile, Kavanagh's father, Thomas ‘Bomber’ Kavanagh, 57, along with his brother-in-law, Liam Byrne, 44, from Dublin, and Shaun Kent, 38, from Liverpool, recently pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to conspiracy charges. These include conspiring to possess a prohibited weapon and prohibited ammunition between 9 January 2020 and 3 June 2021.

Minister Donnelly questions €25 million invoice for €200k job

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has expressed his determination to see the long-awaited National Children's Hospital open by the end of 2025. However, he has emphasised that this timeline is contingent on the construction firm BAM adhering to their promised completion date of June 2025.

The minister's comments at the Joint Committee on Health this morning shed light on the ongoing tensions between the government and BAM. Donnelly revealed that the contractor recently invoiced the state for €25 million for a relatively minor task that ultimately cost less than €200,000. This incident highlights the ongoing disagreements over costs and project management.

BAM has repeatedly contradicted the government's statements regarding the hospital's progress and costs. The contractor's actions have raised concerns about their commitment to completing the project on time and within budget. If BAM delivers the hospital keys as promised next summer, the development board can initiate a six-month commissioning phase. However, the hospital's original completion date of 2020 has been pushed back multiple times, with the current estimated cost now reaching €2.2 billion. The repeated delays and escalating costs have raised questions about the project's management and the government's ability to deliver essential healthcare services to children.

Wimbledon removes line judges after 147 years

In a significant advancement for tennis officiating, Wimbledon officials have announced plans to replace human line judges with artificial intelligence (AI) technology during future tournaments. This groundbreaking decision aims to enhance accuracy, consistency, and efficiency in match officiating.

The AI system, currently under development, will utilise advanced computer vision algorithms to analyse ball trajectories in real-time. By tracking the ball's path and comparing it to the court's lines, the AI will be able to determine whether a ball is in or out with a high degree of precision.

While the transition may raise concerns among some traditionalists, tournament organisers believe that AI can provide a more objective and reliable officiating

experience. The system's ability to process information at lightning speed and eliminate human error is expected to significantly improve the overall quality of matches.

Wimbledon's decision to embrace AI line judges aligns with its commitment to technological innovation and maintaining its position as a leading global tennis event. The tournament has a history of pioneering technological advancements, such as the introduction of Hawk-Eye, a video replay system.

While the exact timeline for the implementation of AI line judges at Wimbledon has not been disclosed, officials are confident that the technology will be ready for use in future tournaments. As the system continues to evolve, it is anticipated that it will be adopted by other major tennis events around the world.

Young Cork rappers on the verge of making Grammy shortlist

The breakout hit The Spark, created by a group of young rappers from Cork and Clare, has made it onto the longlist for the 2025 Grammy Awards.

Released in the summer by the Kabin Crew & Lisdoonvarna Crew, the track quickly went viral, amassing millions of views on social media. The upbeat and infectious song was featured in TikTok and Instagram posts shared by numerous celebrities.

The Spark is now competing in two Grammy categories for 2025: Best Dance/Electronic Recording and Song of the Year. The academy's voters will soon finalise the shortlist of nominees, which will be revealed on November 2, ahead of the 67th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 2, 2025.

The song was recorded by children aged nine to twelve at The Kabin Studio, a community-driven youth music space

housed in a repurposed metal container in Knocknaheeny, on the northside of Cork City. Since its release, the feel-good track has become a summer anthem, receiving coverage from BBC News, The Guardian, The New York Times, Time, and RTÉ News.

The young artists had a busy summer, performing at festivals like Electric Picnic, All Together Now, and Pukkelpop in Belgium, as well as at Cork's Everyman Theatre. They also made TV appearances, including a spot on The Late Late Show.

Israel troops fire at UNIFIL positions in Lebanon

In southern Lebanon, multiple United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) positions, including those near the Irish Defence Forces contingent, have been hit by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the Irish peacekeepers.

According to a statement from Unifil on Thursday, the headquarters and nearby positions of the UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon have been hit repeatedly. Two peacekeepers sustained injuries due to Israeli tank fire.

Unifil stated that the IDF had "deliberately" targeted several of its positions recently, including an incident on Thursday morning where shots were fired at personnel.

"Two peacekeepers were injured when an IDF Merkava tank fired at an observation tower at Unifil’s Naqoura headquarters, hitting it directly and causing them to fall," the statement explained.

Unifil also reported that the IDF fired on UN position (UNP) 1-31 in Ras Naqoura, hitting the bunker entrance where peacekeepers were sheltering, damaging vehicles and communication systems. An IDF drone was observed flying near the bunker entrance.

"On Wednesday, IDF soldiers deliberately targeted and disabled the position’s monitoring cameras. They also fired on UNP 1-32A, a site used for Tripartite meetings before the current conflict, damaging lighting and a relay station," the statement continued.

Unifil said, "Any deliberate attack on peacekeepers is a severe breach of international humanitarian law and United Nations Security Council resolution 1701." The Irish Defence Forces confirmed that all Irish personnel are safe and accounted for, stating that "all necessary force protection measures are in place." They also confirmed that Irish positions had not come under fire.

Central Bank Governor gives inflation and wages warning

The Governor of the Central Bank has warned that the Government's decision to increase spending by more than 5% over an extended period could worsen price inflation and wage pressures.

Gabriel Makhlouf explained that, given the current macroeconomic environment, maintaining an expansionary fiscal policy introduces unnecessary stimulus to an economy that is already at full employment.

This approach could harm the country's competitiveness and create risks that may hinder sustainable economic growth, he told the Oireachtas finance committee in his opening statement.

He noted that increased public investment will be required in the coming

years to address existing deficits in housing and to tackle long-term challenges, such as the climate transition.

"While the anticipated rise in public investment is essential, it is crucial to manage the overall fiscal policy carefully to prevent overheating," he told the committee.

"With the economy already at full employment, there is a risk that large-scale increases in public investment could fuel overheating pressures and result in poor value for money.

"To prevent this, it would have been better if the increases in public investment had been managed while keeping overall net spending below 5%.

"Undoubtedly, this approach would have required making tough choices and trade-offs in other areas of spending and taxation."

Double World Rally Champion Rovanpera to tackle Killarney Historic Rally

Double World Rally Champion

Kalle Rovanpera is set to make a special appearance at the Killarney Towers Killarney Historic Rally.

attracts a big crowd, and I'm sure there will be an even bigger buzz with Kalle and Jonne joining the entry list. We're putting in a lot of effort to ensure the car is in perfect condition for them."

FINAL FOUR

Crokes and East Kerry tipped to progress but Brendan’s and Dingle poised to strike

This year’s County Championship has been criminally short of upsets - it feels like every single game has gone pretty much as expected - but St Brendan’s and Dingle will be hoping to buck that particular trend this weekend.

Brendan’s came into the competition as something of an unknown quantity. How would the Rahillys boys bed into a squad that already contained players from their fiercest rivals, Austin Stacks? The answer, so far, has been ‘quite well’. David Moran has bolstered the midfield while Jack Savage and Barry John Keane have added legitimate scoring threats, and the Tralee and environs outfit have impressed en route to the last four with

victories over the likes of St Kieran’s and Kenmare.

Dr Crokes will be their toughest test yet, however, as the Killarney club’s dangerous forward division are sure to test their defensive resolve.

The midfield battle will also be fascinating with the Brendan’s pairing of Joe O’Connor and David Moran going up against Mark O’Shea and Charlie Keating. It promises to be a keenly contested game with Crokes, perhaps, just about favourites to advance. Whoever comes through this battle will be in good shape for the final against the winners of East Kerry and Dingle.

The West Kerry side were too strong for

Templenoe in the quarters and in Paul Geaney they have arguably the most in-form forward over the course of the Kerry club season to date. East Kerry will have a tough job in trying to pin him down, but the same can be said for the Dingle backs at the other end who have the Clifford brothers to contend with. It’s fair to say that the holders haven’t really been sensational so far. We’ve seen this film before, though, and it invariably ends with Bishop Moynihan residing in

the east. They have been playing within themselves, just doing enough, and that can be considered concerning or ominous depending on your own personal disposition.

Either way, they are justifiable favourites for Sunday’s semi-final - it would be a massive achievement by Dingle if they were to turn the district powerhouse over on this occasion. Both matches will be streamed live on Clubber.

No fireworks yet from fancied teams

Dr Crokes 1-17

Rathmore 2-9

Dr Crokes were expected to have a runaway win over Rathmore last weekend considering that Rathmore were very understrength with so many players injured and others who have emigrated. In the end the Killarney club were fivepoint winners, which is an unconvincing enough result considering their aces. Top scorer once more was Tony Brosnan on 1-5. His goal came from a penalty. He had sent a great pass into David Shaw who was tripped in the parallelogram.

Crokes led 1-6 to 1-2 at half-time and cruised through the third quarter, piling on the scores. Brosnan was clinical in his finishing. In true Rathmore fashion, they did not buckle but took over, although it counted for little in the end.

Ten Dr Crokes players scored and that will pose problems even for a very good defence, which semi-final opponents St Brendan’s possess. Their backs are led by Stacks man-marker Dylan Casey.

A crucial factor in Crokes' great run of successes this year is that they are coached and managed by the highly motivated and skilful strategist Pat

O’Shea. They can push on now and make it to the final.

St Brendan’s 0-16

Kenmare Shamrocks 0-14

In many ways, St Brendan’s are the surprise package in this year’s competition, but having said that they are awash with players who have strong county experience with Kerry.

The addition of big-time names from both Stacks and Rahillys were needed to hold off a very spirited Kenmare

Shamrocks team for whom Seán O’Shea excelled, scoring 10 points. Kenmare were just two points adrift at the end. Jack Savage kicked five points (three frees), Barry John Keane added 0-4 and substitute Paddy Lane chipped in with 0-2.

There are question marks over the availability of full forward Tommy Walsh for the semi-final after the former Kerry star was forced off with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.

East Kerry 1-14

St Kieran’s 1-12

East Kerry have been installed as firm favourites to retain their title with such a huge panel of players from so many clubs at their disposal, but they just squeezed through with two points to spare against St Kieran’s on Sunday. The goals were scored by defenders, Paud O’Leary for East Kerry and Brian Leonard for Kieran’s.

That left the teams level at half-time. Paul Walsh was the other key man for Kieran’s and he kept them in the game. Indeed, it was one of the subs that Jerry O’Sullivan introduced who made all the difference in their win. Yes, David Clifford scored six points, but Finbarr Murphy really impacted the game when he came off the bench. The Legion man kicked five points which was a great contribution to an East Kerry side that did not sparkle as expected.

If Kieran’s had been awarded a penalty after Walsh was fouled close to goal, a surprise may well have been on the cards.

Dingle 1-16

Templenoe 0-9

Meanwhile, Dingle had it somewhat easier in their quarter-final against Templenoe with Paul Geaney scoring 1-7 in his team’s solid win at the Fitzgerald Stadium. With Killian Spillane to the fore for Templenoe (he finished with 0-6), it took Dingle much of the first half to get to grips with a sprightly opponent, and four late points gave them an 8-7 halftime lead.

Dingle moved 0-11 to 0-7 ahead after the restart as Templenoe’s scoring dried up. Still, they battled well with Spillane the only big threat.

Paul is still the key scorer for Dingle. They also have Barry Dan and Tom O’Sullivan back from injury and that strengthens their side.

Which of East Kerry’s defenders will mark 33-year-old Geaney in the semi-final? Maybe Cian Lynch? It will be a tough task for this very promising Glenflesk centre back.

East Kerry just squeezed through with two points to spare against St Kieran’s

Louise and Adam’s big interview at Fitzgerald Stadium A TALK IN THE PARK

Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh has opened up on her life and career in an exclusive video interview with Killarney Advertiser sports editor Adam Moynihan. Speaking to Adam on a special episode of The Kerry Football Podcast in partnership with GMIB.ie, the All-Star forward talked about her childhood in West Kerry, her ‘grá’ for the Irish language, struggling with defeat, and finally winning an All-Ireland in her 17th season. She also revealed the hurt and frustration she and her teammates felt at being treated poorly in the early part of her career, saying she hopes things are “easier” for the next generation of female Gaelic footballers. To that end, she believes the proposed merger of the GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association is of critical importance.

“I’d be hoping that they would try and bring everything under the one umbrella in 2027 like they had promised us,” Ní Mhuircheartaigh said.

“I’m hopeful for the next generation that it will be equal and things will be much easier for them than what we had to deal with when we were growing up.”

When asked if it hurt to be treated differently to male players, the 33-year-old veteran said, “it did, of course”.

“We see ourselves as the same as the men. We put in the same amount of training and effort and put our lives on hold probably even more. If women want to have kids and do that part of their lives, they have to stall it if they’re playing football. It was frustrating to see the men get this, that and the other, and we’d be

fighting to get small things like meals. “Compared to now it wasn’t great. I remember we were training outside the Fitzgerald Stadium on the grass patch. We would never get into the main pitch, anyway.

“Thankfully things have improved since. Both county boards are working well together. It’s looking really good for the future.

“I’d be hoping that [my younger teammates] will be equal with the men. That’s something that we have been fighting for with years, and that’s part of our job as older players to look after the next generation. The majority of our senior team are very, very young and they have long careers ahead of them, so I would be really hoping that they will be equal

to the men in a few very short years.”

Louise also expressed her gratitude to joint managers Darragh Long and Declan Quill who have confirmed that they will not be staying on for a sixth year at the helm.

“They had a massive hill to climb with us, especially the older players. We had hit rock bottom by the time they came in. We’re very, very grateful for what they’ve done for us as a group. We owe them everything.”

At the beginning of the video, which was filmed by Dylan Clifford, the reigning Players’ Player of the Year goes through her kicking routine with Adam and shares advice on how to practice free-taking.

Terrific Legion ladies capture county title

Four goals (three in the second half) propelled the Killarney Legion to a memorable victory over Kilcummin in the final of the Ladies’ Junior B Championship on Sunday.

The girls in green and white put in an excellent display to cap an impressive season with goals by Orianne McGillycuddy,

Andrea Murphy, Áine Devlin and Lauren Carey proving crucial in a resounding 4-6 to 1-9 win.

Legion actually trailed at the interval at John Mitchels GAA grounds with Kilcummin taking advantage of the wind to build up a three-point lead, but the Derreen side responded admirably in the second period to power their way to glory.

Camogie matches held in Veronica’s memory

Killarney Camogie Club’s Veronica Stack Tournament took place in Spa on Sunday under glorious sunshine with thrilling matches across all age groups.

The event, held in memory of Veronica Stack and her contribution to the sport of camogie in the Killarney area, saw teams compete in U8, U12, U15 and junior divisions.

Veronica's father Hugh, husband Jason, and sisters Joyce and Clodagh were all on hand to award medals to the participating players. Also present were Veronica's daughters, Sadhbh, Kate and Niamh, who also played in the junior game, adding a very special touch to the day's events.

Teams from Iniscarra, Cillard, Ballinascarty, Causeway, and Killarney took to the field in the U8, U12, and U15 games, with the Killarney junior team playing an in-house match with players from other clubs adding their skills on the day.

Killarney Camogie Club expressed their gratitude to Michael Cronin and Spa GAA club for the use of their fantastic facilities. The excellent clubhouse, pitches, coffee dock and amenities contributed significantly to the smooth running of the tournament.

The day also saw the presentation of new jerseys to the club’s newly formed junior team, who will participate in the Mai O'Connell Tournament in November. The gear was kindly sponsored by Maginn Machinery Ltd, who were represented by Peggy Brosnan.

The Veronica Stack Camogie Tournament was a resounding success thanks to the fantastic weather, the enthusiastic participation of all the teams, and the tireless efforts of the volunteers, referees, and the committee.

The club say they are already looking forward to welcoming everyone back next year for another exciting tournament.

Along with a shiny trophy, the team have also earned promotion to a higher tier for next season, which is a fitting reward for the great work being done by the players themselves and their mentors Ted Healy, John McCarthy and Orla Culloty.

“The whole club got behind our ladies’ team with banners and bunting around the clubhouse, lots of well wishes and

good luck signage around the town,” Ted said. “It really helped drive the girls on in the lead up to the final.”

In other ladies’ football news, Castleisland Desmonds had a superb victory over Southern Gaels in the senior county final. They eventually ran out 3-14 to 1-9 winners with the evergreen Lorraine Scanlon influential as always.

After waiting patiently for the start of the new National League season to begin, Scotts Lakers and the Waterford Vikings were left frustrated on opening night as their fixture was called off with just 19 seconds to play.

The reason is not one you would expect to find at an indoor sporting event: rain. More specifically, rainwater was leaking through a vent in SETU College Hall and making its way onto the court. When Lakers player Shane Daly slipped on the wet floor with roughly three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, officials stopped the game and made attempts to fix the problem.

Unfortunately, the issue persisted and with the scores at Vikings 69-68 Lakers heading into the final 19 seconds, the match was abandoned in the interest of player safety.

The decision apparently angered the home team who were in a good position to take the W (they had possession and Aaron Jackson, the former Laker, was about to shoot two free throws).

Proceedings ended with a heated exchange between both sets of players and coaches.

Blackwell excels before Lakers get rained off

The Lakers now believe that according to league guidelines the points should be awarded to them as the Vikings were unable to provide an alternative home venue to finish the game. The Waterford club are unlikely to take such a ruling lying down.

The match itself ebbed and flowed with both sides racing ahead at different junctures before losing momentum and allowing the opposition to respond.

After losing their way a little in the second half, the away team battled back admirably and they would have been

Tough Super League intro for St Paul’s

Utility Trust St Paul’s had a difficult introduction to Super League basketball on Saturday last as they suffered a 33-point defeat at the hands of the Liffey Celtics (98-65).

The hosts went ahead early in the second quarter thanks to scores by Rheanne O’Shea, Gracen Kerr and Anja Marinkovic but the Celtics responded emphatically, building up a 13-point lead by half-time. The gap was twice as wide by the end of the third as the Kildare side took control. Megan Ormiston top-scored for the

home team with 20 points, Kerr contributed 15, and O’Shea and Marinkovic had 13 each but it wasn’t enough to trouble the visitors who had strong performances from Sorcha Tiernan and Alexis Tucker.

James Fleming’s charges will learn a lot from this defeat against an established top-level team and they will be hoping that the return of Lorraine Scanlon, Síofra O’Shea and Denise Dunlea will lead to an improved performance at home to Glanmire on Monday. Tip-off at Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre is at 8pm.

ahead in the closing seconds were it not for some poor free throw shooting on their part (they missed nine in total). On the plus side, the young Irish players showed great tenacity and the performance of new US signing Mikah Blackwell was extremely encouraging. The versatile 6’6” two-way player scored in just about every way imaginable, from catch-and-shoot threes, to pull-up midrange jumpers, to close-range finishes in traffic….

There was even a put-back dunk and an alley-oop

thrown in for good measure. He finished up with 42 points in a display that bodes well for the rest of the season.

Patrick Lanipekun chipped in with 12 points, Shane Daly had 7, Eoin Carroll had 4 and Rui Saraiva had 3.

Next up for Ron Howard’s men is the first home game of the campaign against newcomers the Tipperary Talons on Saturday. Tip-off at the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre is at 7.30pm.

Elsewhere in Division One, the Killarney Cougars fell to a 98-77 defeat away to Titans BC with Kani Glover and Joshua Strongman combining for 52. The veteran Andrew Fitzgerald registered 15 points.

Patrick O’Regan’s team will be aiming to build on the positives from their season opener when they host Waterford Vikings in their first home game on Saturday at the Presentation Gym. Tip-off is at 7.30pm.

CHARLEVILLE CHEESE PREMIER A: Killarney Celtic 4-1 Listowel Celtic. Mikey Moynihan. Kalvin O’Sullivan, Matt Keane, Terry Sparling. Killarney recovered from going a goal down to come back and take all 3 points last Sunday. Listowel took the lead in the 6th minute, but Killarney were back on level terms just before the break when Mikey Moynihan netted. Killarney turned the game on its head with a double goal blast in the 51st and 53rd minute after Kalvin O’Sullivan and Matt Keane scored. Terry Sparling rounded off the scoring in the 77th minute to leave Killarney clear winners on the day.

CHARLEVILLE CHEESE PREMIER B: Killarney Celtic B 8-5 AC Athletic. Mikey Moynihan 2, Erin Moloney 2, Mark Kolesnikov, Nattagun Ryan, Dylan Callaghan, John Falvey. Celtic B overcame AC Athletic in a Friday night game which was entertaining from start to finish. Celtic took control early and were 2 up but

Camp struck back before Celtic reasserted to lead 4-1 after 32 mins. However Camp fought back to leave it 4-3 at the break. Camp were level on 47 mins before an OG gave Camp the lead in this exciting game. Celtic regrouped and 4 unanswered goals turned the game back in the home side's favour. Killarney Celtic B 2-0 Camp Utd. Eoghan Crowley, Evan Cronin. In their 2nd game in 3 days Celtic B gained another win. Celtic led 1-0 at the break after an Eoghan Crowley goal. Evan Cronin goaled in the 2nd half to secure the win.

U15 SFAI NATIONAL CUP: Ennis Town 0-8 Killarney Celtic. Jason Harrington 3, Kiernan Kelly, Luke Clancy, Marco Mosca, Ben O'Sullivan, Colm O'Sullivan. In very testing conditions Celtic came away from Ennis with a clear-cut win to qualify for the next round of the SFAI National Cup.

U15 DIV 2: Killarney Celtic B 5-2 Killarney Athletic B. Simon Siriotak 2, Majd Khaleel 2, Hammad Atiq. Celtic B overcame local rivals Athletic last week. Celtic took advantage of the elements to lead 4-1 at the break. Athletic came back with a goal but Celtic steadied to score against the win which settled the match in Celtic's favour.

U13 NATIONAL CUP: Mungret Regional 1-5 Killarney Celtic. Paul McGrath 2, Cillian Scannell, Conor Doherty, JJ Landers. Celtic qualified for the 2nd round of the SFAI National Cup after a fine win in Limerick last weekend.

Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR LADIES: Pride of place this week goes to the Senior Ladies team who added the Bon Secours Junior B Championship to their collection of titles with a hard earned but deserved win over neighbours Kilcummin. The crowning glory on a successful season now sees the team promoted and hopefully will be the first step on the climb of the ladder. Special mention to the management team of Ted Healy, John McCarthy and Orla Culloty who were at the wheel all year and can take buckets of credit for the teams performances. And while it would be easy to pinpoint some excellent individual display it was essentially a great all-round display that carried the spoils.

U15 BOYS: Our U15A team qualified for the Division 1 East Kerry Championship Final after a good win in Spa against the hosts on Wednesday evening. In ideal conditions the first half was tight with Spa in a good defensive structure which the boys found difficult to break down. At half time we led by two points 1-5 to 0-6. A goal early in the second half put daylight between the teams and from there on the boys worked some tremendous scores running out comfortable winners in the end by 4-12 to 0-10. In the final we will face an excellent Firies side in what will be a repeat of the Division 1 County League Final from earlier in the

year. The game is foxed for Kilcummin this Sunday October 13th.

U17 BOYS: The U17s qualified for the East Kerry Division 2 final with a well-earned win over Glenflesk in a sunny Direen on Sunday morning. Buoyed by the return from injury of a couple of our key players, and a very good performance against Rathmore in the previous game, Legion entered the game in good spirits against a good Glenflesk / Kilgarvan side who beat Spa in the 1/4 final. The game was tight in the first half. Glenflesk opened the scoring and the teams traded scores until the visitors raised a green flag when Legion failed to clear a ball in the square. The returning Oisin Fleming was looking sharp and converted a penalty when he was pulled down in the square. Jack Culloty, who was a handful throughout, and Luke Courtney had goal chances but Legion failed to net and entered the break with a one-point deficit. Playing into the breeze on the second half, Legion upped their game and a couple of good goals by Eoin Murphy and Bryan Walshe gave Legion a lead entering the final quarter. Glenflesk fought hard with Liam O'Brien and James Kelly a handful for Brian O'Connor and Ronan O’Brien who had good games in the Legion defence. There was a bit of late drama when Glenflesk pointed late and there was some confusion over the score with all present having Legion ahead by a couple of points. Good points by Mark Looney and Cillian Murphy put the game beyond any doubt and Legion will play Cordal in the final in 2 weeks. Final score Killarney Legion 3-11 Glenflesk 1-13.

Dr Crokes GAA

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 1:17 Rathmore 2:09. Our Senior Footballers secured their place in the County Championship Semi Final with a good win over Rathmore in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. Played in poor conditions, we started the better, with Gavin O’Shea opening the scoring in the first minute. Two minutes later Tony Brosnan was unlucky not to raise the green flag after a super effort on goal. It was halfway through the half when Rathmore got their first of two goals, after a fantastic save from Shane Murphy. In typical Crokes fashion, this only pushed us on further and we scored three consecutive points from the boots of Tony Brosnan, Micheal Burns and David Shaw. In the 25th minute David Shaw was taken down inside the small square and Tony Brosnan converted from the penalty spot, giving us a 1:08 to 1:02 lead at the break. We took control early on in the first half, with score from Cian McMahon, Tony Brosnan and Evan Looney. Shane Murphy was once again forced to make a number of brilliant saves, to keep us well ahead for much of the half. Rathmore continued to put it up to us, battling hard and eventually raising a second green flag in injury time. We

now take on St. Brendan’s on Saturday at 5pm in Austin Stack Park.

Killarney RFC

U16 GIRLS: Our U16 girls’ team had their maiden voyage of the new season on Sunday morning as the amalgamated Killarney RFC/Iveragh RFC/Listowel Rugby/Killorglin Rugby Club. It kicked it off with a well-earned win against a Cobh/Midleton/Youghal team. Our girls started very strong in the first half with good hands and support play in offence to put three tries on the board early, one of which was converted. They conceded a try late in the first half to go in

at halftime 17-5 up. The opposition grew into the game in the second half after an early try from our girls, putting us on the back foot defensively and with strong forwards play going on, the score two tries, both converted well. This led to a nervy final few minutes, but we held on to secure the win. It was an excellent first-team performance, and many girls new to rugby got a taste of the game during periods throughout the match. Big thank you to Cobh/Midleton/ Youghal for a very competitive game, for travelling so early, and for being so lovely to players on both sides. Thanks to all the parents who helped out before and after, brilliant sideline support as always appreciated, and to our u16s coach Tony Dunne and u18s coaches TJ Brosnan and Chip Vivier for working together when needed fabulous stuff.
