Killarney’s top award for Margaret O’Donoghue A woman who has been to the forefront of the tourism industry throughout her life is to be inducted into the Order of Inisfallen – the highest honour the town of Killarney can bestow. Margaret O’Donoghue of The Gleneagle Group will be honoured at a reception in the historic Muckross House and she will join a very elite list of previous recipients who have been recognised by Cairde Chill Áirne. Margaret was one of 10 children born to Hannah and John O’Sullivan in Shanara, Beaufort. She began her working life in Killarney’s Great Southern Hotel. She met Maurice O’Donoghue, who was studying to become a pharmacist, at a dance in Tralee in 1961, and they were married in 1964. Maurice’s parents, Sheila and Paddy O’Donoghue, purchased Flesk House – a Georgian House sitting on four acres – and in 1957 they opened it as The Gleneagle Hotel. It had 12 bedrooms at the time but, together, Margaret and Maurice set about developing The Gleneagle into an all-inclusive holiday destination. From modest beginnings, it has flourished to become one of Ireland’s largest and most popular hotel groups.
Margaret O'Donoghue, of the Gleneagle Hotel Group, will be honoured by the Order of Inisfallen for her contribution she and her family have made to tourism in Killarney and the economy in the greater Kerry area for over half a century. Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan
The entrepreneurial family went on to develop the Gleneagle INEC Arena – one of the flagship entertainment, conference and events facilities in the country – as well as the very popular Brehon Hotel, the Killarney town centre Scott’s Hotel, The Maritime Hotel in Bantry and a number of other key tourism properties.
Cycleway network to begin construction next year Killarney’s Active Travel Plan and cycle network is to begin construction early next year. In February 2021 Kerry County Council revealed an ambitious plan to build four new cycleway withing the town centre. The first of these is plan to link Cleeney Roundabout with Rock Road and St Anne’s Road. At this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, Kerry County Council confirmed that construction could begin on the Rock Road section either Quarter One or Quarter Two next year. Other sections like the Deerpark Road, Gaelscoil Road / Chestnut Drive, and Flesk Cycleway will begin construction
late next year. The final sections, including the Upper Lewis Road portion wont' see shovels on the ground until at least 2026. “A total of €1,043,000 has been allocated by the National Transport Authority in 2023 across the 10 Active Travel Projects proposed for the Killarney Municipal District,” a council official told the meeting. “These projects are currently being progressed by the Kerry County Council Active Travel Team. It must be noted that these anticipated start dates for construction are dependent on process steps which are outside of Kerry County Council's Control.”
The Gleneagle Group is now operated by a third generation of the O’Donoghue family, under the direction of Margaret and Maurice’s eldest son, Patrick, who is the chief executive officer of the Gleneagle Group. The Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District Council, Cllr Brendan Cronin,
described Margaret O’Donoghue as the matriarch of a very iconic family that has been to the forefront of the tourism industry in Killarney, Kerry and Ireland for decades. “Margaret has been the guiding hand in all that the family has achieved and, given her enormous contribution over so many years, it is wonderful that she is being officially recognised with this very important award,” he said. Margaret O’Donoghue said it is an honour to accept the Order of Innisfallen on behalf of both herself and Maurice, who passed away in 2001. “The Gleneagle wouldn’t be the success it is today without the support of the incredible staff that have worked with us down through the years, the many regular guests, families and friends who have always supported us and my own family who have taken over the reins,” she said. The Cairde Chill Áirne Order of Inisfallen awards scheme is a joint initiative between Kerry County Council and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. It was established in 2005 to recognise outstanding contributions by people to the economic development of the town and its tourism industry. Previous recipients include former Taoiseach Enda Kenny, actor Michael Fassbender, Charles, the King of England, entertainer Daniel O’Donnell, industrialist Isolde Liebherr and businessmen Donal Ring and Micheál O’Donoghue. The Order of Inisfallen award will be presented by Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin, at Muckross House at 4.00pm on December 11 and, later that evening, Margaret O’Donoghue will be the guest of honour at the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation’s Christmas Ball which will be held, appropriately, in The Gleneagle Hotel.

Macroom to Baile Bhuirne bypass officially opens The final section of the N22 Macroom to Baile Bhuirne bypass has been officially opened marking the completion of the €280 million project, funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and progressed under the Government’s Project Ireland 2040. The ribbon was cut on the last 6 km section by Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Frank O’Flynn, Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar TD and Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan, together with the Chief Executive of Cork County Council Valerie O’Sullivan and Chief Executive Peter Walsh of Transport Infrastructure Ireland on Monday. The new section of road features one of the deepest cuts ever excavated and blasted in Ireland. Over 500,000m3 of rock was broken and blasted over a twoyear period from this section, with the rock recycled to form the foundation of the road throughout the project.Construction of the 22km road began in January 2020 with contractors Jons Civil Engineering Company Ltd and John Cradock Ltd working together as a joint venture. J.B Barry & Partners are the Contractor’s Designer and Mott MacDonald is the Employer’s Representative on the project.
2,200 WORKERS
The number of work-hours during the construction stage amounts to 1.8 mil-
lion. There were 2,200 people directly involved including engineers, designers, planners, supervisors, excavator and dumper drivers, carpenters, steel fixers, pipe layers, pavement laying crews and traffic management operatives. Over 300 construction staff were working each day during the peak. The completed dual carriageway extends from the eastern side of Macroom at Coolcower to the townland of An Sliabh Riabhach on the western side of Baile Bhuirne. Macroom Town with Baile Mhic Íre and Baile Bhuirne bypassed as part of the project, marking a major upgrade on the road infrastructure between Cork and Kerry. It features four junctions and 101 principal structures including four river bridges, four overbridges, 15 underbridges, retaining walls, bases for variable message signs, culverts, and environmental barriers.
WELCOMED
The 22km stretch of road bypassing both Ballyvourney and Macroom on the road
from Kerry to Cork city, is a major step forward and will enhance the journey of thousands of commuters and visitors between both counties, according to Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill. “The reduction in travel times between Kerry and Cork City is immensely welcome for all those who travel the route regularly and the removal of the frustration of sitting in traffic jams is a godsend. Many Kerry people need to travel regularly to Cork for work, health, leisure, etc,
and vice versa for many Cork residents. Irish and foreign visitors also will benefit from the smooth transition between the two locations” stated Councillor Cahill. “This, coupled with the ongoing works on the Adare Bypass on the border with Limerick, will open up Kerry for increasing numbers of visitors and commuters throughout Munster and Ireland for years to come” said the Rossbeigh based Councillor.

Mountjoy Prison Governor gives mental health talk
Last week it was announced that 77 Protection males were to be placed at the Harmony Inn, Kings Court Hotel. On Wednesday this week over 100 residents of Muckross Road attended a meeting at the Old Weir Lodge to discuss
concerns surrounding the housing of 77 males at the two hotels. They are to hold a second meeting at the Killarney Avenue Hotel at 7pm on Sunday evening. “Our national and local representatives will all be in attendance. We would like to see a large turnout of people at the meeting in support of the town of Killarney as we seek to protect the services, infrastructure, health system, tourism and brand of Killarney town,” said a statement issued by the meeting organisers.
All paths led to the Killarney Plaza Hotel on Thursday night last (November 3) as a large crowd gathered to receive the wisdom and insight of Mr. John Lonergan.
John served in the Irish Prison Service for over 42 years. He was Governor of Mountjoy Prison for over twenty-two years and Governor of the top security prison at Portlaoise for almost four years. He retired in June 2010, and later that year, his autobiography “The Governor” was published. He is today a much sought after mental health speaker. “It was a challenge to get John for the event, such is the demand for his talks but it was clear on the night that John has an insight into the Irish mentality and psyche that everyone in the room could relate to” stated Derek O Leary, Manager of Ballyspillane Community and Family Resource Centre who hosted the event. “He was so engaging and insightful and delivered his address with the wit and humour of a capable stand-up comedian
and had the whole room in great humour on the night” The crowd of over 150 people enjoyed John’s talk for over an hour but they also experienced ‘Chocolate Mindfulness’ first hand, which saw each individual benefit from a bar of chocolate to challenge their mind on the night. “’Chocolate Mindfulness’ is chocolate meditation that uses a piece of chocolate to engage all your senses and not only do you get to enjoy chocolate, but the chocolate also acts as a focal point to keep your mind in the moment,” Deirdre Nagle, Social Prescriber at Ballyspillane Community and Family Resource Centre explained. The night culminated in each person attending leaving their finger print on a beautiful tree depicted on a canvas thus ensuring all were represented from the night.
THERE WAS A TOUCH OF HOLLYWOOD AROUND KILLARNEY ON MONDAY NIGHT: Fossa native and A-lister Michael Fassbender returned to his hometown to visit his acting school, The West End School of the Arts on New Street. Also on site was another silver screen favourite Brendan Gleeson. The famous actors are pictured here with school director Jessica Courtney Leen, tutors Charlie Hughes, Jessica Plunkett and Christina Cronin.

Yellow Boxes
Yellow boxes on Killarney’s streets are to be re-painted following a request by Cllr John O’Donoghue. The council said it will survey the junction boxes, with a view to having them re-marked. Any that are identified and are located on National Roads network will be forwarded on to the Transport Infrastructure Ireland for their consideration.
Plan to reduce congestion on Mission Road
Listry Bridge might finally be getting an upgrade Plans to upgrade Listry Bridge might finally be taking a step in the right direction. There have been numerous calls made over the years to make-safe the notorious accident black spot on the road that links Killarney to Milltown. Kerry County Council has confirmed that
it will appoint a consultant for the Listry Bridge project. At this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, suitably held at Listry Community Centre, Mayor Brendan Cronin asked: “ Can the Council specify what will the consultants’ brief of work involve and what is the timeframe for completion of
same?” Kerry County Council said, “it is appointing a company called Engineering Consultancy Services to progress this project through three phases of project development.” • Phase 1 Concept and Feasibility, review • Phase 2 Options Selection • Phase 3 Design and Environmental Evaluation • Phase 4 Statutory Processes “It is anticipated that completion of the above project phases will take approximately 2 years,” added the official.
Preliminary designs for a proposed slip road linking the Lower New Street Car with the lower end of Mission Road have been drawn up. Cllr Brendan Cronin has been calling for a new slip road to be created on Mission Road to allow traffic to enter the car park before reaching the junction with Beech Road. He asked for an update at this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. A council official said: “ Kerry County Council has completed preliminary designs for a proposed entrance and exit as this location. However, further review and additional reports are required prior to proceeding to the Statutory Process, which would be expected to be carried out in the 2024.”

Game, Set and Match for Killarney students Pupils attending Kerry Primary Schools are set to be top of the class when it comes to sporting and academic success and it’s all thanks to the development of a magnificent Handball Wall opened at Lissivigeen National School gymnasium this week. Lissivigeen School, the best and most modern sporting and academic facilities to enhance the development of students in a fully inclusive and holistic manner. The Indoor Handball Wall initiative, the first of its kind in a Kerry primary school, has been spearheaded by the school community under the guidance of Tadhg O’Sullivan, a member of the Board of Management at the school and a founder member of Spa Killarney Handball Club. “It will afford students the opportunity to sample one of Ireland’s oldest sports, handball, and provide a fun element as students are introduced to the sport,”
Teachers attending the Killarney Course were Michelle O’Byrne, Brid Ryan, Marie O’Mahony, Sarah Cahill and Margaret Daly.
said Tadhg, Kerry Handball Board Schools Liaison Officer. Handball, thanks to the development of the Handball Wall, will now feature as one of the models in the School Recreational Programme and will also form part of the schools Physical Education Programme.
This week teachers from eleven Kerry Primary Schools attended a special handball introductory training programme at Lissivigeen National School hosted by Wexford native Marguerite Gore, Handball Ireland Regional Development Officer and Elaine Cahill from Kerry Recreational
10.11.2023 and Sports Partnership. “Our role was to fund and present each of the participants with an information pack that will enable the teachers to coach the game of handball to the students. The afternoon in Lissivigeen was also a practical session where the teachers received hands on training from Marguerite on the rules and procedures involved in the sport.” Brid Ryan, a teacher at Lissivigeen National School was one of the course participants and is looking forward to teaching the skills to her pupils. “Playing handball dramatically improves the fine and gross motor skills of the participants. Concentration levels will soar and this will no doubt become evident in the classroom. There is also the added dimension of social interaction between the students and the added benefits that students will learn the skills and rules of a new sport.” The Handball Wall developed at Lissivigeen School is expected to be the first of many in Kerry. “From experience I was in a position to advise on the best materials and the correct construction and positioning of the wall which was skilfully built by Tom Hurley. A lot of work was also essential for correct and durable floor marking materials. However the most important element this week was training the teachers to run handball programmes in the school,” said Tadhg O’Sullivan who is now hoping to develop handball walls in other Kerry schools.
The Friary Youth Club will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its first attempt at the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. “A reunion of the Friary Youth Club will be held on November 25 at the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney. “It is 40 years since we did the Ring of Kerry Cycle 1983, in aid of the Irish Wheelchair Association,” said organiser Finola Geary. €20 million for Charity by 2024! Heading into its 41st year, accumulating in excess of €19.6 million to date, peaking at €1.8 million in 2017, the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is the greatest cycling charity event in the world! Just last week, splitting €1,076,279.43, across 32 tiered charities, I was delighted to catch up with two of the organisers at the beautiful Killarney Park Hotel. Completing the Ring of Kerry Cycle 25 times himself, and full steam ahead for 2024, it was an honour to chat with Brendan Coffey (right) and Cathall Walshe (centre), who has volunteered since founded in 1982 by Denis Geaney, taking part in 19 cycles to date. This legendary duo assured me that the wheels are well and truly in motion for 2024! With so many worthy charities, how do you decide the charitable recipients? “There are many charities that we try to support every couple of years such as Down syndrome Ireland, Kerry Hospice, Recover Haven, Kerry Parents & Friends and the Kerry Mountain Rescue to name but a few. We have branched out nationally to other worthy charities such as Children's Hospital in Crumlin and Break Through Cancer Research. All of these registered charities are worthy of funding so yes, it is a very difficult task, but we study each application individually and their needs, as a committee. We then shortlist carefully each year in three tiers” Cathal explained. The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle has grown from strength to strength generating millions each year. What do you think is the reason for its success? “We might organise the event but it's the volunteers that make it the huge success it has been. There are over 1,100 people that make it all happen, not just us. One of which is the owner of this hotel, Padraig Treacy, who together with his team, complete a clean sweep of the aftermath, left by the recklessness of littering. These

people give up their time and mark their calendar for the year ahead. Our medical professionals unite, (The Irish Red Cross, The Order of Malta and The Civil Defence), and work hard to ensure the safety of every cyclist. The Gardaí and the Co. Council facilitate this huge operation and the bus drivers opt for alternative Kerry views on Dingle Peninsula. It's team effort all the way and we couldn't do any of it without them. I personally think Cathal Walshe epitomises the ring. His enthusiasm is infectious .... plus he knows everyone!” Brendan laughed. Brendan you have a huge grá for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle involving yourself on the committee as well as completing the cycle for 25 years. What have been your stand out moments? It's more of an addiction than a grá Marie. For an event that started with just 200 cyclists, the thing I love the most is engaging with random strangers that have the same goal in mind. Can you imagine my delight, enjoying the breath-taking views of Coomakista, setting off alone downhill when a stranger approaches 'Sure you can’t be cycling alone'. Who was it only my idol, footballer Mick O'Connell, whose company I enjoyed for the remainder. A similar situation for my wife Brenda, who cycled alongside Sean O'Suilleabháin from Killorglin, regarded as one of Ireland's foremost walking expert and founder of the Kerry Way, who
passed away last week” Brendan recalled. “He's being modest Marie” Cathal interrupted. My ears perked. “Brendan along with Paul Curtis resurrected two high nellyies as a novel idea to complete the Ring of Kerry one year. No gears, just raw pedal power from start to finish” Cathall explained. Brendan laughed. “We weren't the only ones with this novel idea. We enjoyed great camaraderie with a group from Cork who came in their droves on High Nellys. The next year we decided to make it a theme, and meet up with the Cork gang again. Anto Cronin finished the cycle, complete with a smile and fun filled personality on a penny farthing in record time! The year after that, I did one better, completing the cycle on a 1960 tandem with my daughter Catherine” Brendan recalled. “I suppose the most memorable high nelly cyclist was Jimmy Duffy (RIP), from Blenberville, who took in his return journey to Killarney on the saddle stopping off at The Shanty on the way home from completing the ROK Cycle. Jimmy's bike satchel was rarely complete with out an emergency bottle of 'baby Power'". What about you Cathall, I'm sure you have many memories to share? “Working with people like Brendan makes it easy. His tremendous work and dedication is above and beyond and not only with the ROK Charity Cycle, he is also a member of the Kerry Mountain Rescue team for the past 25 years” Ca-
thall began. “You mean I cause all the fights” Brendan laughed. “The ROK Cycle has become a destination event to meet new like-minded people and gives a huge spin off to Killarney and Kerry. Many have produced 'the ring' on the ring. There's even been a wedding on the ring” Cathal. laughed. “A Tipperary man stopped to help a distressed Dublin lady with a flat tyre and they agreed to meet at the finish line. They met frequently thereafter, and at the next ROK Cycle, he produced another type of ring. Fr Harrington at Fossa Church tipped us off about the nuptials so we lined the exit with bicycle wheels in hand, similar to that at Killarney Credit Union's, Karena McCarthy's wedding. This was in recognition of her huge contribution to the administration of the Ring of Kerry Cycle for many years” Cathal recalled with a smile. “I involve myself in many things Marie but I can thank the Ring of Kerry Cycle for bringing me to the two most memorable, uplifting moments of my life as winner of 'Radio Kerry Hero Award 2023' and the wonderful opportunity I had in being selected as Grand Marshall for this year’s St Patrick's Day Parade. I also really enjoy visiting the Bricin, the Tatler Jack, The Flesk, Foley's, O'Donoghue's etc to touch base with many of the cyclists enjoying a well-deserved refuelling before I head home” Cathal continued. So what are the plans for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2024? “We do have an addition with the Irish Cancer Society in the pipeline for 2024. They are facilitating the '170km MyWay' option, which was a huge success during covid, generating €445,000, when events were not possible. Cyclists completed the 170Km over one month within the 5Km radius restrictions at that time” Brendan explained. We will be launching the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle for 2024 on 29th November and applications are open from 1st December. " I left these two legends , in awe of the fact that this Killarney charity event will most certainly tip over €20 Million in 2024! Magical.

Choosing a perfect
Sofa for you or your family Your sofa selection will play a big role in creating a comfortable seating area. Offering a welcoming place to unwind with a book, watch TV, or just being the central gathering hub for nights in with friends and family. Considerations, when choosing your perfect sofa, • Your seating requirement • Available space • Access – to get the sofa into the room • Sofa and fabric options The amount of sofa seats needed doesn’t have to correspond to the exact amount of people in the household, especially if the room is compact. Consider the floor space available and the need to leave room for fireplaces, radiators, walkways or other furniture, such as cabinets or occasional tables. Adding a single chair that complements
the sofa, may give better balance to the room, than increasing the sofa size. Ensure access is sufficient to manoeuvre the new sofa into the room. Some sofas have removable backrests and armrests or come split into smaller sections as others only have removable legs for easier transport. We are all familiar with simple rectangular shaped sofas, but when visiting furniture showrooms, you see how the popularity of snuggle type sofas or chaise sofas has increased. These are all there to give different room layouts and flexibility to your space.
For more generous rooms consider modular sofas, where the size and shape can be adjusted to your space by adding on sectional units. Seating comfort will vary from sofa to sofa and from individual to individual. Do take your time to explore and test out different options available. Sitting on the sofa is important! Some sofas are designed with higher backrests that offer more support, while others with low profile, for more modern look and open plan living spaces. Another important consideration is the choice of material for your favourite sofa. Have you considered leather or fabric upholstery? Some sofas are only offered in one or the other, while some factories give both options. McElligotts sales staff will clarify your options.
Leather is a durable and a natural material, known for its strength and for ease of cleaning. This is the main reason why this material has been used in car interiors for decades with huge success. You would also have a wide variety of colours to choose from as most of the animal hides used for upholstery have been dyed. As leather is also hypoallergenic, it is a welcoming material for dust related allergy sufferers. Some customers may prefer the warmth of fabric upholstery, there is a huge variety of fabric sofas to choose from. And for ease of cleaning ‘’aquaclean’’ fabric use for domestic upholstery has become more popular in recent years. This type of fabric has been specifically treated to protect the fabric fibres from dirt and liquids penetrating it. And the cleaning of stains would require water only – hence the name, aquaclean. McElligotts also offer fabric and leather service plans that cover furniture against life’s little accidents; such as accidental staining or accidental damage (ie rips, tears, burns and stains). This will give you peace of mind on your choice of sofa covering and increase your colour/fabric options available.. Both leather and fabric sofas should be dressed daily and will have maintenance to consider. Once you will combine the right size, comfort and material that fit your budget - this is ultimately the perfect sofa for you and your family. McElligotts welcome you to find your perfect sofa at unbeatable prices at their Castleisland and Killarney stores…

Near 50% jump in value of car loans - BPFI Sick leave at Personal Loans Report from Banking and Payments Federation Ireland has shown a surge in the volume and value of car loans being issued.
The report, which covers the three month period to the end of June, shows a year on year increase of 36% in the volume of car loans drawn down with the total value rising by nearly 50%. 15,828 car loans to the value of €189m
were issued in that period. Figures from the CSO and SIMI show a growing number of EV purchases partly accounts for the jump in the value given that EVs are substantially more expensive than petrol and diesel vehicles. CSO data shows almost 14,000 new electric cars were registered in the first half of 2023, about 65% more than in the first half of 2022. The report also reported a surge in green personal loans drawn down with
the value rising by almost 175% year on year to €29.3m in the same period. The average green loan, at €23,419, was substantially higher than the average for all loans at €9,562. "Today's report shows a continued upswing in personal loan drawdowns in Q2 2023 with 56,385 drawdowns valued at €539 million," Brian Hayes, chief executive of BPFI, said of the overall lending figure.
Dublin Airport caused flight delays A shortage of air traffic controllers in Dublin airspace, amongst other issues, led to the closure of the airport twice on Monday. The issues included unscheduled sick leave, and mandatory safety training. Seven flights were left in a holding pattern over Knock Airport, with hundreds of passengers affected by the closures.
Visited Emyvale, Monaghan recently? The National Lottery has called on Lotto players to carefully check their old tickets as one punter is at risk of missing out on a prize worth over €1 million. A Monaghan player scooped €1,000,500 in a special 'Ireland Only Raffle' event in the Lotto draw on Saturday August 19, after purchasing their winning Quick Pick ticket on Thursday 17 August in Emyvale, Co. Monaghan. As ticket holders have 90 days from the draw date to claim their prizes, the last date to claim this life-changing amount is fast-approaching as the claim deadline is close of business on Friday 17 November.
Kerry men honoured at the National Bravery Awards The Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD, today (Friday November 10th) presented 26 National Bravery Awards to individuals from across Ireland who risked their own lives to aid others in peril. Speaking at the ceremony, the Ceann Comhairle said: “Today the Irish State recognises and celebrates the noblest impulse in a human being, the impulse to risk our lives in order to save someone else’s. But just as importantly, what these awards also do is mark the importance of the lives that were saved and
also those that were lost. I say this because in several instances, we are making awards where, in spite of brave actions and valiant efforts, lives were tragically lost. Those involved in these attempts know how hard they struggled, the families of those lost appreciate their efforts as do we, the Irish nation.” Recipients from Wexford, Kildare, Laois, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Mayo, Meath, Wicklow, Donegal and Dublin were among those honoured at the ceremony in Farmleigh House.
Kerrymen, Don O’Neil and Donal Hanley were honoured at today’s ceremony for the rescue of a man from the sea at Ballyheigue On the 24th of September 2022 a man, who was a regular sea swimmer, found himself caught in a rip tide while swimming in the sea off Ballyheigue Beach, Co. Kerry. He began shouting for help and was struggling to stay afloat when Donal Hanley and Don O’Neil entered the water and swam out to him. At this point he was some distance offshore and all three were swept out further to
sea while struggling to stay afloat in the strong current. Due to the current and the sea conditions all three were in fear of their lives but after some time battling the waves all three eventually got back to the safety of the beach. The rescued man, who was a strong and experienced swimmer, was very appreciative of the assistance of both Don and Donal and recognised they were instrumental in saving his life that day. For their actions, Donal Hanley and Don O’Neil are each awarded a Bronze Medal and Certificate of Bravery

Greenland’s northern ice shelves have shrunk by a third since 1978 New research suggests Greenland’s ice shelves have shrunk by around a third since 1978. A study published this week by Nature Communications said the ice shelves in the northern part of the country have lost more than 35 percent of their total volume. The study also said three ice shelves in the region have collapsed “completely.” The study also noted the glaciers in North Greenland have ice that can “raise sea level by 2.1 meters” and have long been considered to be stable. The study also noted an increased rate of “basal melting,” which is defined as “the melt-
ing of the ice shelves from underneath” by NASA. “Between 2000 and 2020, there was a widespread increase in basal melt rates that closely follows a rise in the ocean temperature,” the study said. “These glaciers are showing a direct dynamical response to ice shelf changes with retreating grounding lines and increased ice discharge.” “These results suggest that, under future projections of ocean thermal forcing, basal melting rates will continue to rise or remain at high level, which may have dramatic consequences for the stability of Greenlandic glaciers,” the study continued.
World Award winning photo in Tralee exhibition Yesterday, November 9, the photo exhibition "The Light of Azovstal" opened in Tralee, which consists of Ukrainian soldier, Dmytro Kozatskyi's strongest photos, which capture himself and his comrades during the defence of "Azovstal". Dmytro’s photo "Light will win" was selected as one of the best in 2022 by The Guardian newspaper. It was also selected for the list of "100 best photos of 2022" by Time magazine. The photo was taken by Ukrainian soldier Dmytro Kozatsky, during the defence of Azovstal. Now you can see this legendary photo with your own eyes in Tralee at Siamsa Tire. This exhibition has been organised by Ukrainian woman Alona Strienikova along with Kerry author Olivia Howe. On May 20, 2022, just before being captured by the Russians, Dmytro published a post on his Twitter: “Well, that's it.
Thank you for the shelter of Azovstal the place of my death and my life. By the way, while I am in captivity, I will leave you photos in the best quality, send them to all journalistic awards and photo contests, if I win something, it will be very nice after the release. Thank you all for your support.” Along with his works, documentary photos of the destruction of Ukraine made by the famous photographer Oleksandr Harvat will also be presented. The exhibition will last 20 days - from November 9 to 29. Admission is free. Warning! - the exhibition can make a strong emotional impression on visitors. The exhibit includes images of destruction and pain. Children under the age of 12 should not be taken with you. Dmytro, together with other defenders of Mariupol, was in Russian captivity and was released on September 21, 2022. On December 6, he returned to the ranks of the Armed Forces where he still serves.
Nestlé axing Caramac and Animal bars after decades Confirming the news, Nestlé wrote: “Unfortunately we had to withdraw Caramac from our range as sales were relatively low. It was a difficult decision for us because we’re proud of all our products and don’t like to disappoint our consumers.
“We hope you can understand why we took this decision." In a further update the company also confirmed that the Animal Bar is also being discontinued "due to the low performance of the product and a steady decline in its sales over the past few years" End of an era.
Couple sue over 'unfair' mortgage interest rate A Cork couple, Darren Hennessy and Emer Barrett have launched a High Court action against Pepper Finance Corporation Ireland DAC over the "out of proportion" and "unfair" high rate of interest they claim they are being charged on their mortgage by the bank that acquired their loans from a PTSB. In a case which the court heard may
have implications for thousands of other mortgage holders. They claim Pepper is currently charging them an unfair rate of 8.5 per cent interest, whereas if their loans had remained with PTSB they would be paying just over 4.3 per cent. They claim that Pepper remains bound as successor in title to the same corresponding rates of interest as those currently being offered by PTSB. The judge adjourned the case to later this month.

The announcement came during Circular Week, an international series of events and initiatives promoting the circular economy and sustainability, from October 23 to October 27. Kia have made a resolute commitment to sustainability, placing it at the core of their business strategy with a long-term goal of Carbon Neutrality by 2045. As
Kia Ireland announces partnership with Clean Coasts part of this initiative, Kia is dedicated to using recycled materials in vehicle production, including recycled ocean waste. Notably, Kia is a global supporter of The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organisation dedicated to developing and scaling technologies to combat plastic pollution in the world's oceans. In a recent milestone, The Ocean Cleanup successfully retrieved 55 tons of plastic from the Pacific Ocean in a single operation. This plastic was then recycled and upcycled for use in the production of the fully electric New Kia EV9. This partnership underscores Clean Coasts' dedication to fostering sustainable practices and engaging communities
in coastal and marine conservation. Going forward, this collaboration will bolster the efforts of Clean Coasts volunteers as they continue to clean and protect Ireland's coastal environments. It will support beach clean-up initiatives and explore innovative ways to transform collected waste into new resources, aligning with Clean Coasts' vision for a cleaner, more sustainable coastline. The alarming statistic that 88% of marine life faces a threat to existence due to ocean plastic underscores the urgent need to address this environmental challenge. Clean Coasts, An Taisce, and Kia are determined to be part of the solution.
Fassbender’s rare Irish race outing Michael Fassbender finished in the top ten of his first event Irish race last weekend. The Fossa man and Hollywood A-lister tackled last Sunday’s Ford Fiesta Six Hour Race at Mondello. He shared a POB Motorsport with former Irish Formula One Grand Prix drivers David Kennedy and Tommy Byrne. Fassbender has been racing in the European Le Mans Series since 2021.
Driving a Proton Competition in the Le Mans 24-hour race feeder series he has scored podium finishes with his teammates Richard Lietz (Austria), Felipe Fernandez Laser (Germany), His last appearance at an Irish event was during the 2019 Rally of the Lakes driving a Ford Escort Mk2. The Fiesta six-hour race is Ireland’s only endurance event and runs into darkness – again the only Irish motor race that takes place at night.
Rules of the event state the driver may not drive longer than 45 minutes continuously and must rest for 30 minutes between stints. No driver can drive for longer than three hours out of the six and each team is assigned a marshal to ensure rules regarding driver and fuel stops are adhered to. Fassbender, Byrne and Kennedy finished ninth and completed 275 laps of the County Kildare track during their six hour stint.
Cathal Kealey, Head of Marketing and PR at Kia Ireland said: “By 2030 Kia will have 20% of all vehicle plastics coming from recycled materials. Our EV9 which will launch in Ireland in the coming weeks uses ten sustainable items in vehicle production, that have either originated from recycled plastic, or have been sourced from plant-based materials. Going forward, these materials will be used in all future Kia models also. We are delighted to support Clean Coasts and to assist them in finding ways to reuse collected beach waste in line with our circular economy initiatives.”

Dacia celebrates ten years in Ireland This year has been a highly memorable one for Dacia in Ireland with the brand celebrating 10 years and over 35,000 sales since launch. 2023 has been Dacia Ireland’s best ever year for sales, with almost 5,000 units done. This success helped Dacia achieve a record market share of 7.6% in the European retail market (compared with 6.2% in 2021). For the sixth consecutive year (since 2017), the Dacia Sandero was the most sold car in the European retail market. The Duster ranked second in 2022 and has also been the best-selling SUV to retail customers since 2018. These two best-selling models have played a major role in Dacia reaching the eight million sales milestone. Dacia and its customers, the brand introduced its new emblem – “Dacia
Link” – in 2021, which consists of a ‘D’ and ‘C’ connected in the middle. Further highlighting the brand’s rugged and adventurous nature, 40% of customers live in the countryside. People who purchase the Dacia Spring – Europe’s most affordable new electric car – are the most rural (50%), the innovative all-electric hatchback being at home in the country as it is in the city. Due for launch in Ireland in 2024, the all-electric Spring also plays a significant role in Dacia striving to address the concerns regarding future mobility.

New quad bike law comes into effect in November The use of All-Terrain vehicles (ATV/Quad Bikes) is becoming more and more common on farms and forests and for many other sectors such as road works and airports, ATV’s/Quads are essential pieces of equipment. However, there have been a significant number of fatalities involving quads and the potential for a serious injury or fatality when using a quad is high. The main causes of serious or fatal injury associated with ATV/Quad Bikes are: • Being thrown off during vehicle overturns or after loss of control; • Collisions with structures, trees, poles, other vehicles etc.; • Being trapped/asphyxiated under an overturned machine; • Being drowned under a quad bike overturned in a water course; • Pedestrians being struck or run over by an ATV/Quad Bikes. Regulations governing the safe use of ATV/Quad Bikes in all workplaces will
John Healy of Healy Insurances.
HELMETS
come into effect on 20 November 2023. These regulations have two essential requirements of note: • Training to be undertaken with a registered training provider to a QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland) standard or equivalent • Use of helmets to a (generally) prescribed standard. • Persons who undertake ATV/Quad Bike training must ensure that; • The training provider used, is a regis-
tered training provider, registered with a registration body such as QQI, Lantra, City & Guilds or others such registered training bodies, and on successful completion of the training course, they receive a certificate of training that confirms that the course was successfully completed to the QQI standard 5N1752 or equivalent, and they retain and show when requested their training certificate as proof of training.
Helmet types suitable for ATV/Quad Bike operations, depending on the circumstances of use, are motorcycle helmets and specialist ATV helmets. All helmets should have a chinstrap and be capable of being used with suitable eye protection. The type of helmet chosen must be based on an assessment of the circumstances in which the ATV/Quad Bike will be used, e.g. the types of surface travelled over and anticipated speeds. The harder the surface and higher the speed the greater the degree of protection needed. Standard industrial hard hats, forestry helmets and cyclist helmets are not acceptable for any ATV/Quad Bike operations. Importantly, ‘All quad bike helmets should fit comfortably and securely, to ensure full protection.’

Killarney chosen to host Global Incentive Summit 2024 Killarney has been announced as the host destination for the 2024 Global Incentive Summit, an event that will bring together 170 of the world’s leading incentive travel professionals, to participate in one-on-one appointments and networking activities. The summit will showcase Kerry as an iconic, diverse and green destination for global incentive programmes and has the potential to generate €6.3m in revenue for the region. The news was announced at this year’s Global Incentive Summit in Portugal on 8th November. Incentive travel is a management tool that uses exceptional travel experiences to recognise employee performance. The incentive travel market is extremely lucrative with delegates estimated to be worth more than three times the value of a leisure visitor. Fáilte Ireland,
in partnership with Tourism Ireland, The Europe Hotel & Resort and Kerry Convention Bureau led the bid to bring the summit to Ireland. The Europe Hotel & Resort was chosen as the venue to host the summit’s attendees, including 65 North American incentive travel buyers and 90 international incentive travel suppliers. “We are honoured to be the chosen venue to host Global Incentive Summit in 2024. Kerry is Ireland’s premier regional tourist destination and offers spectacular scenery and unique experiences for

Vacant home tax deadline looms Revenue have this week began reminding homeowners of the 7 November deadline they must meet to begin the process of paying the new Vacant Homes Tax. The tax, announced in the recent budget, will target 60,000 properties across Ireland and it will be applicable at a rate of three times that of the local property tax and will be payable by the start of January. The idea of the new tax is to make more housing available by encouraging those who own empty houses to put them up for sale or into the rental market. There is currently no database of these
properties and the tax is self-assessed, but Revenue say it is “very important” for homeowners to determine if they are required to pay the tax. The levy will apply to all unoccupied homes if their property was occupied for less than 30 days by 1 November. Revenue is also writing to 25,000 property owners to advise them of the steps they need to take towards their Vacant Homes Tax return. They have advised that those who receive this letter are required to submit a return, even if their property does not meet the relevant conditions for the tax to apply. Exemptions are included for homes that
are undergoing refurbishment or are in use as holiday homes. Approximately 800,000 homeowners are also being reminded by Revenue that they must set up their payment options for the Local Property Tax. As of 1 November, newly built residential properties or homes which have been refurbished and have been occupied between 2 November 2022 and 3 November 2023 are now also subject to the local property tax. If a taxpayer bought or built a new residential property between 2 November 2022 and 1 November 2023, Revenue is reminding them that the property is now liable for the local property tax.

THIS WEEK’S ISSUE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: Business Development Manager: Chris Davies Graphic Designer: Leszek Szeligowski, Sports Journalist: Adam Moynihan, Sean Moriarty
You must have made a certain number of PRSI contributions to be eligible for some social welfare payments. You may be eligible for other payments, if you pass a means test or if you are in urgent need. Time limits apply for many payments, so apply as early as is possible. You cannot be expected to do everything right away, but if the deceased was getting a social welfare payment or you were claiming for them as a dependant or you were getting a Carer's Allowance to look after them, it's important that you notify the Department within the first few days of the death. Notifying the Department does not mean the payment will be taken back immediately. In many cases, the spouse, civil partner, cohabitant, parent or carer may continue to receive a payment for 6 weeks following the death. What happens when a person being cared for dies & carer was in receipt of Carers Benefit/Allowance? Payment of Carer's Allowance (full or half-rate) continues to be made for 12 weeks after the death of the person you were caring for while payment of Carer's Benefit continues to be made for 6 weeks after the death of the person you were caring for. If you are getting Carer’s Allowance (full or half-rate) on behalf of a spouse, civil partner or cohabitant and that person dies, you can continue to get Carer's Allowance for 12 weeks plus the State Pension/Invalidity Pension/Disability Allowance etc (if in payment to that person) for 6 weeks after the date of death. If you were getting Carer’s Benefit, you continue to get it for 6 weeks and any payments your spouse or partner was getting.
Domiciliary Care Allowance continues to be paid for 3 months in cases where the child being cared for has died. Is there any help available with funeral costs? You can get help with the cost of the funeral in certain circumstances. The Widowed or Surviving Civil Partner Grant is a once-off payment to widows/ widowers/surviving civil partners with dependent children. This grant is a once-off payment of €8,000. If someone dies from an accident at work, a Funeral Grant is available. To be eligible for this grant, the death must have resulted from an accident at work, an accident while travelling directly to or from work or an occupational disease. It amounts to €850. Whether you qualify or not for one of the above grants you may be eligible for an Additional Needs Payment to help with funeral costs if you are on a low income. Each case is decided on its merits. The Community Welfare Service prefers if you apply before the funeral takes place, but in practice, most people apply afterwards. In many cases a payment or a grant cannot be paid until all the necessary documentation is received. If you are claiming the grant, you are responsible for the production of certificates, documents and any information required, for example: • Death certificate • Birth certificate • Marriage or Civil Partnership certificate (to prove your relationship to the deceased) • Funeral receipts • The deceased person's Personal Public Service (PPS) number Your PPS number may also be required If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website. Paudie Clifford leads East Kerry to fourth title in five years Defending champions East Kerry clinched another county title in Tralee on Sunday last as they withstood Mid Kerry’s spirited fightback to prevail in the final by the narrowest of margins. Goals in either half by captain Paudie Clifford and substitute Luke Crowley appeared to have settled this meeting of divisional rivals but a flurry of late points gave Mid Kerry hope. There was to be no upset, however, as a fine save by Brian Kelly and some calm play by Jack Sherwood secured the victory for the undisputed top dogs of Kerry football. After losing to the same opposition in 2020 and 2022, it was another agonising defeat for the runners-up. They can find some encouragement in the fact that they only lost by one point – compared to twelve and nine in those previous deciders – but in a way that makes it all the more frustrating. Attention now turns to what is shaping up to be one of the most important Intermediate Club Championship finals ever. If Fossa beat Milltown/Castlemaine on November 19 they will be promoted to senior, and East Kerry will lose the Clifford brothers for 2024. Meanwhile, if Milltown/Castlemaine win, Mid Kerry will lose five starters (and East Kerry will remain just as strong). So, whatever happens, the result will radically alter the face of next year’s County Championship.
UNDERDOGS
With five minutes remaining in the first half of Sunday’s final, things appeared to be going to plan for the underdogs. Points by Éanna O’Connor, Gavan O’Grady, Fiachra Clifford and Cillian Burke had them one point ahead, 0-4 to 0-3, and they were looking solid defensively with David Mangan negating the threat of David Clifford and Mike Breen keeping a close eye on Paudie. A free by the younger Clifford in the 27th minute evened the scores and seconds
later disaster struck for Peter O’Sullivan’s side when they lost their own kickout and the elder Clifford ghosted in unmarked to strike a low shot that deceived Seán Coffey in the Mid Kerry goal. A brilliant point by Man of the Match Darragh Roche followed and although O’Connor pulled one back with a 33rd-minute free, East Kerry were sitting in a comfortable position at the break (1-6 to 0-5). With the wind at their backs in the second period, it was all set up for a trademark runaway win for the reigning champions but Mid Kerry fought back admirably in the third quarter. Frees by Clifford and O’Connor (two beauties) and a point by midfielder Gavin Horan made it a one-point game with 15 minutes to play. A free by Roche extended East Kerry’s lead to two before his Glenflesk teammate, young Luke Crowley, stole in for what should have been a contest-ending goal in the 47th minute. O’Connor and O’Grady and Roche and Donal O’Sullivan exchanged scores over the following ten-minute period and with Mid Kerry still trailing by five, another East Kerry win seemed inevitable. A chaotic finish followed, however, as Mid Kerry scored four straight points via Mike Breen, O’Connor (free), Seán O’Brien and Liam Carey. Somewhere in between, Carey forced Kelly into a sprawling reaction save. It was frenetic and far more stressful than it needed to be for East Kerry, but they ultimately held on to become the first divisional team in the history of Kerry football to win four titles in five-year period.
EAST KERRY SCORERS: D Roche 0-5 (3f), D Clifford 0-3 (1f), P Clifford 1-0, L Crowley 1-0, D O’Sullivan 0-2. MID KERRY SCORERS: É O’Connor 0-6f, G O’Grady 0-2, F Clifford 0-2 (1f), C Burke 0-1, G Horan 0-1, M Breen 0-2, S O’Brien 0-1, L Carey 0-1.

Getting rid of divisional teams is not the answer When I say that my eyebrows were raised as I scrolled through the statement on the Kerins O’Rahillys website last Thursday morning, I mean they were raised from start to finish. The Tralee club, who last weekend lost their senior status for the first time ever, spoke of their “anger” at the county board and their “ire” at getting demoted to intermediate while divisional teams enjoy a “special status” that spares them such a grisly fate. Clearly, Rahillys feel that they still deserve to be a senior club. And they offer us a “solution that can suit everyone” – one that they describe as a “small change”: take the divisional teams out of senior, move them to the Intermediate Club Championship, and replace them with the top eight clubs at intermediate level. This would mean that the 2024 County Championship would be comprised exclusively of club sides - with Rahillys being one of those club sides, naturally enough. Whatever you think of their idea, you have to admit they have balls. It's one thing for a manager or a chairman to respond to a question from a journalist and say something like, "yeah, we're a bit disappointed, we feel there should be more senior clubs". But to publish a lengthy manifesto on the club website outlining why they shouldn't be relegated just days after being relegated? And to suggest that divisional teams like East Kerry and Mid Kerry should be booted
out of the championship next year, just three days before those two teams contested a county final? Of course any club is entitled to fight their own corner, but I was genuinely taken aback by what I was reading. As official club statements go, this one was pretty wild. The fact that Rahillys are making this proposal now, immediately after they have fallen through the trap door, has unsurprisingly been ridiculed by some observers. It comes across as self-serving given the circumstances. It should be pointed out, however, that they have tabled a motion to increase the number of senior clubs twice in the past five years, so it is an issue that has been on their mind for a while. The thing is, they’re not alone in thinking that change is necessary. The debate surrounding the number of senior clubs in Kerry has been lumbering on for years. The general consensus is that eight simply isn't enough. As the rapid and unexpected demise of Legion, Austin Stacks, and now Kerins O'Rahillys shows, it's very easy for clubs to have an off year, or an off month, and lose their coveted place in the County Championship. It can also prove very hard to get it back. Meanwhile, divisional teams are always invited back to the feast, irrespective of the contribution they made to last year’s shindig. For what it’s worth, my own instinct is

that 16 senior clubs is too many. It would dilute what is a very competitive and very entertaining Senior Club Championship and it would make it basically impossible to include the eight divisional teams in the County Championship. Rahillys are clearly fine with that, but I have a feeling there would be strong resistance in other corners of the county. One of the redeeming qualities of the current format is that it gives the best players from smaller clubs the opportunity to compete in the senior championship. Significantly, these smaller clubs far outnumber the would-be senior clubs who might be in favour of a radical overhaul. That’s one part of Rahillys’ proposal that has to be dismissed as fanciful. They say that their suggestion constitutes a small change and it can suit everyone. Removing the divisional teams from the County Championship, dropping them down to intermediate and taking their intermediate clubs away from them is not a minor alteration. For example, East Kerry would be left with three clubs: Listry, Firies and Kilgarvan. Mid Kerry would be left with just two: Keel and Cromane. How does that suit them? Raising the number of senior clubs to 10 or 12 seems more realistic. Keep the eight divisional outfits and have a playoff round to see who qualifies for the 16-team championship. The best district sides will still make it and still contribute to our showpiece competition in a meaningful way.
Most importantly, in the interest of fairness and transparency, any decision on restructuring the championship needs to be made before all relevant championships start, not after they end. The county board can't decide there will be 10 or 12 senior clubs next season and allow the already relegated Rahillys to be one of those clubs. Of course I understand Rahillys' frustration. They're a great club with a great history. They want to play in the County Championship and they feel they offer more than certain divisional teams. But the rules were the same for everyone at the start of the season. The senior clubs knew what they needed to do to avoid relegation. In the statement they're not shy about highlighting the failings of South Kerry, West Kerry, Feale Rangers, St Brendan’s and Shannon Rangers in 2023. With respect, Rahillys weren’t great themselves. The goalposts can’t be shifted now to make allowances for them because they’re a big club. That wouldn’t be right, and I said the same thing last year when it was Stacks, and the same thing the year before when it was Legion (and nearly Dr Crokes). If there are to be changes, they need to come into effect in 2025 so that the 2024 competitions are run off with those changes in mind. So, for example, if the number is to be increased to 12 then tell clubs that there will be no senior teams relegated in 2024, and that the four semi-finalists in the intermediate will be promoted. A club like Rahillys would fancy their chances of being one of those four teams. In fact, if they really feel that they’re a senior club, they should be going out to win the Intermediate Championship. That, in my opinion, would be the right way to do it.

More heartbreak for gallant Mid Kerry Eamonn Fitzgerald reflects on a keenly contested county final that went right down to the wire In a nail-biting finish it took a splendid, reflex, fingertip save by Brian Kelly for East Kerry to regain the Bishop Moynihan Cup 2-10 to 0-15 at Austin Stack Park on Sunday last. Mid Kerry lost once again in another heartbreak defeat in a county final. They lost to Dr Crokes in 2011, they also lost to Austin Stacks after a replay in 2014, and then to East Kerry in 2020, 2022 and now 2023. There were heavy defeats in the past, but a mere one-point defeat on Sunday last will do little to assuage the pangs of regret in Mid Kerry. They lit the fire of hope, especially in that final quarter, but hopes don’t always spring eternal. Maybe from the ashes of defeat, the phoenix of triumph will rise. Basic analysis will reveal why they failed in a game they should have won. Match stats will provide cold comfort. Nine wides, two more balls that dropped
short, a cardinal sin for any forward, allowing East Kerry to start a new attack from their own square. Mid Kerry were also blocked down on two occasions when a score was definitely on. Great defence by East Kerry but mistiming of these shots drew blanks. They had to depend on six frees converted by the ever-reliable place kicker Éanna O’Connor. The experienced East Kerry had 17 shots and scored 12 points. Enough analysis. CAPTAIN PAUDIE Goals win matches and two well finished goals broke the hearts of Mid Kerry. East Kerry captain Paudie Clifford showed once again that he is not only the best man to assist in scoring with those darting runs, but that he can also score himself when it’s most needed on the big day. The first 25 minutes of this game was
lacklustre, pedestrian and bedevilled by incessant overuse of the hand pass, and to make it worse mostly lateral movement. The captain led by example. The scoreboard read just four points each. The match needed a lift. The Fossa and Kerry star picked up a pass from Man of the Match Darragh Roche (0-5, two from play) and made his way on Route 1 to goal before unleashing a splendid low drive past Seán Coffey. Mary Jo’s son used all of his 6-foot-plus frame to get to the piledriver, but Paudie had perfected that shot from the days of his youth with Killarney Athletic and Killarney Celtic. For the first time the game came alive and East Kerry went into half-time four points clear. It was a crucial score.
Even with that goal Mid Kerry should have been level at least but they shot too many bad wides. Their build-ups were slow, boring and predictable, but credit the East Kery defence who forced the Mid Kerry men to shoot from positions and angles that had a high propensity for wides. It cost Mid Kerry big time. I was surprised that Easy Kerry took off corner back Dara O’Callaghan for Niall Donohue after 24 minutes. Memories of those heavy defeats in county finals of the past must have weighed heavily on the Mid Kerry players and management. They were four points in arrears, they had lost Nathan Breen as early as the 17th minute, and now they were facing into a strong breeze. AGAINST THE ODDS They refused to buckle, though, and they were at their best against those odds. Éanna O’Connor really came into his own and he led the claw-back. Last week I predicted that O’Connor needed to score six points from frees to form the basis for victory. He did just that, but it wasn’t enough to compensate for the profligacy of so many of his teammates, particularly in that first half. 10.11.2023 Jerry O’Sullivan made a tactical move by introducing Luke Crowley in the 45th minute for his Glenflesk clubmate Patrick Darcy, and it reaped early dividends. The Kerry U20 player could hardly believe his good luck when he scored East Kerry’s second goal in a give-and-go move, tucking in the low shot for goal number two. What a great moment for the Crowley dynasty in Glenflesk. Luke’s dad John scored so many goals for Kerry and for East Kerry in their many victories, and of course his grandfather Derry prevented opponents from scoring goals. Derry won four Kerry SFC titles with East Kerry. The footballing successes of the Crowleys from Glenflesk continues in this new generation. The lid was sealed on Mid Kerry’s coffin. Or was it? Not so as against the odds Mid Kerry continued the ascent of Carrauntoohil, all 3,414 feet of it, having slid down the Devil’s Ladder twice to those sucker punch goals. They faced the challenge and gave East Kerry a real fright. O’Connor (two frees) and points from Gavan O’Grady, Mike Breen, Seán O’Brien and Liam Carey brought the game to a nail-biting conclusion. But try as they might - and they did try very hard - Mid Kerry couldn’t eke out an equalising point or a winning goal against a splendid East Kerry defence. Naturally, much of the pre-match speculation centred around the likely dominance of the Cliffords on the scoreboard. Still, it was Darragh Roche who earned the Man of the Match award. It was a sweet win for East Kerry. One very happy man who smiled his way through the final was Mike Allen of
Firies. 77 is not his age, but on Sunday last he attended his 77th Kerry SFC final. That's interest and stamina. JACK O’CONNOR Who will be new recruits in Jack’s army 2024? The Kerry boss was tucked away strategically in the stand in his twin roles. Would his son Éanna kick enough points from frees to win the title? Who was he pencilling in to replace Jack Barry? He was also looking for at least one natural scoring forward - and I mean a scoring forward - to ease the burden on the Cliffords. Will there be some opportunities in January to give Ronan Buckley, Barry Dan O’Sullivan, Seán O’Brien, or the Ryans of Rathmore a shot at replacing Jack Barry who is going off travelling for a year? The Kerry boss will have to cast out the net further than he had bargained for. The selectors will be keeping a close watch on the form players in the various third level colleges games. For scoring forwards, I am impressed by Cillian Burke, although not on last Sunday’s display when he was well policed. All he could manage was a single point. He is a fine, strong, direct forward. He’s no Bomber but has the raw credentials and the DNA is good. Where else are the scoring forwards? Drink-fuelled readymade solutions of the hurlers on the ditch, the unofficial Kerry selectors, are often knee-jerk reactions. Selecting the dream team in November will not deliver the All-Ireland next July, The wisdom of ‘nuair a bhíonn an t-ól istigh bíonn an chiall amuigh’ still makes a lot of sense. Referee Paul Hayes made sensible decisions in some tricky situations and settled for yellow cards where they were warranted. No point throwing the rule book at some player when a page sufficed. Common sense.
How many All-Stars will Kerry get? It’s that time of year. The clock has gone back to old time and November has heralded the winter storms and the intense deluges. Unfortunately for some people in other parts of Ireland, the elements have caused destruction, particularly in Wexford, Waterford and Midleton. Sports aficionados love lists of likely award winners and the debate around the choices of judging panels. In GAA circles, the selections are heavily favouring the All-Ireland finalists. All choices are personal and so is mine, certainly not professing any more wisdom than the ordinary punter. How will Kerry players fare out in the football All-Stars? The team will be announced live at the banquet on November 17.
FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR
David Clifford is my choice to hold off the claims of Brian Fenton and Brendan Rogers. Why? He’s simply the best, better than all the rest. Thank you, Tina Turner, for providing the apt description. I believe David Clifford is the only Kerry certainty on this year’s team, probably at corner forward with Shane McGuigan of Derry at full forward. Shane Ryan won an All-Star in 2022 NOMINATED: David Clifford is in line for an All-Star and possibly Footballer of the Year at next week's ceremony. Photo: Piaras Ó Mídheach/ Sportsfile.
and he had a splendid year in goal for Kerry this year. He is my choice but he will have to fend off the prejudicial bias of the Dublin based media who will be swayed by the exploits of the returning 41-year-old Stephen Cluxton. He gave some great displays, but I believe the Rathmore man deserves the number 1 geansaí. Jason Foley is a possible but not a probable. I expect the No. 3 geansaí to go to Derry, with Mick Fitzsimons of Dublin in the mix, and also Séan Kelly of Galway. No chance of getting a Kerry midfielder on. It looks like Fenton and Rogers for that department. Any other Kerry forwards apart from David Clifford? I think older brother Paudie is high on the probable list, with Seán O’Shea only in the possibles. That would leave Kerry with only three All-Stars, the Clifford brothers and Shane Ryan. That would be unusual for All-Ireland finalists. Of course, go back to 1971, the first year of the All-Stars, and Kerry had just one: Donie O’Sullivan (Spa/East Kerry). Young Player of the Year will most likely come down to a decision between Ethan Doherty and Eoin McEvoy (both Derry), If the judges can’t agree, Conor Carroll (Roscommon) may be the compromise. Unlikely, but possible.

OPINION WEEKLY SPORT
Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues
VAR’s broken promises are a real pain in the neck Imagine this. For years you’ve been going to your doctor with neck pain. It’s intermittent pain that you can live with but you’d rather it wasn’t there at all. Your doctor says nothing can be done. They can treat it but there will always be some discomfort. So, you go out and you find a specialist in neck pain. This specialist costs more but they promise to fix you. However, after seeing the neck pain specialist for two years, you still have neck pain. Now: what do you think of the specialist? Do you feel better or worse about your neck pain? You feel worse, naturally, because you were promised perfection and you didn’t get it. And it came at an added cost. This is VAR. Referees making mistakes that cost your club has always been a pain and the introduction of VAR was sold to you as a modern means of cutting out those mistakes. Of removing the pain. It has come at a cost. It’s taking up your time. It’s sapping your enjoyment of goals. And, at the end of day, mistakes are still being made. Every now and then, that pain in your neck returns. VAR is failing and ultimately our human egos are to blame. On the surface, we have brought in technology to pinpoint and correct human error. We’re putting
our hands up and saying, “the machines know best”. But who is controlling the machines? Who is interpreting the pictures being relayed by the cameras? That’s right, more humans. We have not ceded responsibility to a higher technological power, an all-seeing, all-knowing RefereeBot. We have actually tried to solve a human-based problem (i.e. a referee struggling to interpret a complex game with nebulous laws) by adding more humans to the mix. The Spurs v Chelsea game on Monday
night was hilarious. The match had 11 VAR checks and 21 minutes of added time. Now, in fairness, the game itself was very entertaining. The chaos of the whole thing was engrossing (although that was more down to Spurs losing the plot than anything else). But, in general, no one wants all these stoppages. No one wants the excitement of every goal to be diminished by pangs of Inevitable VAR Check Anxiety (IVCA). And no one wants the post-game analysis to be completely dominated by this single glaring
issue, week, after week, after week. Managers, clubs and fan bases are now becoming conspiracy theorists, and they’re growing increasingly radicalised by the day. “It’s PGMOL, man, They’re out to get us.” It is a truly bonkers mindset that could only take root in the brain of a fanatic. Soccer-related debates can get a bit silly at the best of times, particularly in the current landscape of banter-based social media discourse, but this VAR stuff has taken it to a new extreme. Whether we like it or not, video technology is here to stay, but the way it’s being used has to change because we’re genuinely on the brink of a total and complete meltdown. Personally, I would like to see the Premier League adopt an NFL-style approach to video tech. Instead of bringing every single debatable decision to the altar of the Video Assistant Referee, hand authority back to the on-pitch officials. The decision on the field stands - unless a manager holds his hand up and asks to challenge it. In the NFL coaches have two challenges per game. I think one would be enough in the Premier League, with managers given a second if their first challenge is upheld. This would cut down the number of VAR checks while still incorporating the technology. It would give teams some peace of mind when it comes to the most important incidents involving goals and red cards. (Goal-line technology should still be used for all goals or possible goals. This can be handled amongst the officials without the need for challenges.) It won’t be perfect but that’s life. Perfection isn’t an option. There will always be some pain – we just need to learn to live with it.

Tom reflects on great year both on and off the course Killarney man Tom Doherty enjoyed another successful campaign on the international disability golf circuit in 2023, testing his game in France, England and Italy. After winning bronze at the Paragolf French Open in Biarritz, he quickly followed that up with the runners-up prize at an event in the UK. He then came fourth out of a very strong field at the second Irish Open in Roganstown, Dublin. In September the former Mayor of Killarney qualified for the European Stableford Match Play finals, which were staged just outside London at North Hants Golf Club (the home club of top professional golfer Justin Rose). Tom made it to the semi-finals where he just came up short against eventual champion Loris Stradi from Italy. The season finished up in October with the European President’s Cup in Turin. The Kerry man left the Royal Park Golf Course with a sixth-place finish. His efforts throughout the 2023 season earned Tom a top 10 placing in the stableford world rankings for golfers with a
disability. “Success for me is more than giving it my all on the fairways and greens of the golf course,” Tom told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s also about meeting up with my fellow competitors in the clubhouse after our golfing day is done. We share stories of sporting challenges and life challenges as individuals with a disability. “This has given me a truly diverse international and ever-increasing group of friends. “It was great to see so many young spectators with a disability at the Irish Open this year. With the announcement of new sponsorship, I’m confident that the Irish Open will quickly become a leading event on the European circuit.” Tom is now an enthusiastic ambassador for Golf Ireland’s Golf4All Champions Programme. “We travel around the country to events, telling our stories and encouraging more people to get into golf,” Tom explains. He hopes that his personal story will help inspire the next generation of golfers with disabilities.
DEAL: California native Ethan Kos will be back in the green of Kerry in 2024.
Kerry tie down Kos for 2024
Kerry Football Club have confirmed that American centre back Ethan Kos has signed a new contract with the club which will see him stay at Mounthawk Park until the end of next season. Kos (21) made the move to the Kingdom in the summer transfer window following his studies at UCD. The Californian landed in Ireland in 2019 and during his time with UCD he played in the Leinster Senior League, FAI Intermediate Cup and CUFL. Kos played a vital role for Kerry in 2023, featuring in 15 of 17 matches since joining in July. He played over 1,200 minutes in the green and gold and he is sure to be a regular contributor for Billy Dennehy’s side next season. “It means a great deal to me to extend with Kerry FC for next season,” Kos told
KerryFC.com. “There’s no doubt that this club is special and it’s going to do great things. I’m privileged to be a part of it.” Manager Billy Dennehy said it is “great to have Ethan on board” for the 2024 season. “Ethan is a player who showed great desire to try and progress his career by travelling over here and spending some time on trial during the summer. I could tell straight away that his personality was very well-suited to the club and the team. “I must say he really developed as the games went on and he showed that he has the ability to play at this level. He still has a lot to improve on and I’m looking forward to seeing him use last season’s experience and his work during the off-season to be bigger and better in 2024.”
Lakers to host Lions in Killarney Scotts Lakers will be hoping to bounce back from last weekend’s disappointing cup defeat to SETU Carlow when they host the Dublin Lions in the National League on Saturday. The match-tips off at 7.30pm at Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. PAR FOR THE COURSE: Killarney's Tom Doherty is now ranked in the top 10 in the world for golfers with a disability.
It will be the first of three home games in a row for Brian Clarke’s side, who current-
ly find themselves mid-table in Division 1. The St Paul’s women’s team were also eliminated from the cup last weekend following an unexpected heavy defeat at the hands of SETU Carlow. James Fleming’s league leaders have a weekend off before getting back into the swing of things with a home match against the Phoenix Rockets next Saturday, November 18.

SPORT NOTES
Killarney Athletic U13 NATIONAL CUP: Round 3 Ballymackey 4-2 Killarney Athletic (aet). Our National Cup journey came to an end this afternoon away to Ballymackey from North Tipperary. On a very heavy pitch, the sides were evenly matched with nothing separating the sides in the first half. Second half was a battle, and we deservedly went ahead when Robert Murphy reacted quickest in the penalty area and put us ahead with ten mins to go. This seemed to spur on Ballymackey, and they got a deserved equaliser with a few mins remaining to send the game to extra time. A mad 6 mins in the first half of extra time saw Ballymackey score 3 quickfire goals to go 4-1 ahead. Our lads didn't let this get their heads down and Eric Corcoran scored in the second half of extra time to put us within 2 goals. Our lads kept battling to the final whistle but, unfortunately there was no way back. Well done to our boys, who left it all out on the pitch in difficult conditions. Thanks to Kevin and Ballymackey for providing food and refreshments for players after the game, much appreciated.

Any motions or nominations should be forwarded to the Club Secretary at your earliest convenience.
JOHNNY CULLOTY: It was nice to see the Kerry GAA Supporters Club honour Johnny Culloty at their recent end of season get together. Johnny has of course been an ever present and strong influence in our club for many years, recognisable to all of our members. But for those of a younger vintage they may not be fully up to verse with Johnny's glittering career. He lined out 44 times for Kerry in senior championship football, played in nine All Ireland finals and gathered five of the treasured medals. He was successful in five National League campaigns and in a career that lasted sixteen years he won twelve Munster titles. He started out in the forward line, but a knee injury saw him take up position between the posts. Football was not the sport in his repertoire, he played in goal for the Kerry minor hurlers at the age of 14 and won three Minor County championships and one Senior County Championship. When his playing days were over, he managed the Kerry Senior footballers in 1972 and 1973 and served as a selector under Jack O’Connor in the mid noughties. Is it any wonder they acknowledged him at this function on October 29th! U17 BOYS: The minor boys qualified for the East Kerry Minor Division 2 Final following a hard-fought win away to Cordal/ Scartaglen. The home side started brightly and raced into a 1-2 to 0-0 lead after ten minutes. The lads grew into the game and a couple of quick-fire goals saw us get back into the game and lead 4-2 to 1-6 at half time. The second half was a tight affair with a missed penalty almost proving costly for the lads and Cordal/ Scartaglen converting one. The scores were level with time running out and both sides spurned chances to win the game late on. Extra time beckoned and it was the last turn to make a fast start with a goal and two points. A black card late in the first period of extra time meant all shoulders had to be put to the wheel and a 3-point lead was preserved. But with 5 mins to go in the second period of extra time another black card was dished out and it really was a case of all hands to the pump. It was back to the walls for the remaining minutes, but the lads saw out the game to progress. Final Score Killarney Legion 5-10 Cordal/Scartaglen 2-18. Team: Joshua Alade, Kevin Looney, John O’Grady, Luke Courtney, Aindi O’Cathasaigh, Cillian Murphy, Ronan Fahey, Bryan Walsh, Josh Bowler, Eanna Kearney, Brian O’Shea, Jason O’Sullivan, Oisin Fleming, Daire Murphy, Eoin Murphy, Bryan O’Connor. We will now play Glenflesk in the final, date and venue to be confirmed.

Leading 30- 0 at half time, a number of changes and including some positional changes were made at halftime. The killarney girls didn’t stop scoring and Bronagh Dorrian got a super try, the last score of the day went to the home team.
