Progress at last for Áras Phádraig as planning application lodged

A planning permission application has been submitted to Kerry County Council to develop the historic Áras Phádraig building.

The landmark building, which has lain idle for over 15 years, is set to be demolished to make way for a new mixed-use development.

The proposed plans include a three-storey theatre and community building, a

six-storey primary care centre, and public realm improvements.

The Franciscan Order donated the 2,623 square metre complex to Killarney Town Council in 2009.

However, legal issues delayed the pro-

ject. In 2017, a feasibility study was conducted, suggesting a community theatre and art space, offices, education and meeting rooms, and a primary care centre.

The primary care centre will offer services such as GP and dental surgeries, an X-ray department, child and adolescent mental health services, and a base for the local

community mental health team.

The overall cost of the project is estimated to be over €21 million, with €16 million coming from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF). The remaining €5 million is expected to be funded through various sources, including the HSE and the local authority.

The public consultation period for the planning application is now open, with submissions due by December 19.

Members of the public can view the plans and make observations on the Kerry County Council website or at the Town Hall in Killarney.

€1 million boost for Dereen Sports Hall project

The Dereen Sports Hall in Killarney is set to receive a significant €1 million boost from the government's Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF).

The funding was announced this week by Minister Catherine Martin and Minister Thomas Byrne.

Construction of the new state-of-the-art sports facility is well underway. This project is a collaborative effort between the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, St. Paul’s Basketball Club, and Killarney Judo Club.

The new facility will cater to the needs of the local community, providing a

much-needed space for sports and recreational activities.

The complex will include a double basketball court, a multi-functional room, changing rooms, a gym, and a coffee shop.

Additionally, there will be a dedicated judo room, an outdoor playground, and improved car parking facilities. This investment is part of a wider government initiative to improve sports infrastructure across Ireland. The LSSIF has already allocated significant funding to various projects nationwide, demonstrating the government's commitment to promoting health and wellbeing through sport.

Young people urged to register to vote

As the general election on November 29 approaches, authorities are emphasising the critical importance of voter registration, especially among young people.

The registration deadline is November 12 and voters can easily register or update their information by visiting ChecktheRegister.ie. Young voters, in particular, are encouraged to take action. Engaging in the electoral process not only ensures representation but also empowers the younger generation to influence policies and decisions that affect their lives directly.

N22 preferred options to go on public display at Great Southern

Kerry County Council will host two in-person public consultation evenings at the Great Southern Hotel as part of the N22 public consultation.

Kerry County Council, in partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), is developing the N22 Farranfore to Killarney Project to deliver a sustainable solution for transportation problems identified in Killarney, Farranfore and the wider communities along the N22 corridor.

This project involves the examination of feasible transport solutions including active travel, public transport, and road-based options. A key driver for the project is to ensure that all forms of transport are working together to achieve a sustainable solution and to minimise the impact to the natural and built environment.

A public consultation will run for four weeks from November 11 to December 6 and Kerry County Council is seeking submissions on the preferred transport solutions.

The Project Team has undertaken an

appraisal of the Feasible Transport Options which were published in June 2021 and has considered feedback received through the first non-statutory public consultation to identify a Preferred Transport Solution for this second round of consultation.

Feedback and submissions received through this second non-statutory public consultation will be considered by the project team before a Preferred Route Transport Solution (or a ‘Preferred Option’) is finalised.

Kerry County Council will host two in-person public consultation evenings at the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney on November 11 from 2pm to 8pm and November 12 from 10am to 8pm. The open evenings are open to all members of the public and members of the Project Team and Kerry County Council will be in attendance to assist with any queries.

Cash reward offered as beloved family pet stolen

A local family is desperately seeking the return of their beloved pet dog, Bruce, who was stolen from their home in the Kilcummin/Mastergeeha area on the night of Saturday, November 2.

Bruce, an 11-year-old Doberman, is easily recognisable due to a fresh wound on his left paw and his larger-than-average size.

Despite his intimidating appearance, Bruce is a gentle and friendly dog who requires daily medication for arthritis. The family is offering a reward for any information leading to Bruce's safe return. If you have any information regarding his whereabouts, please contact the Killarney Garda Station immediately. The family is urging anyone who may have seen Bruce or knows anything about his disappearance to come forward, no matter how small the detail.

GARDAÍ SEIZE €47,000 AT KILLARNEY

Gardaí in Killarney have seized €47,000 in cash, suspected cannabis, and ecstasy tablets during a routine Mandatory Intoxicating Testing (MIT) checkpoint in the early hours of November 6. The seizure was made during a vehicle inspection at approximately 1:30 am. Gardaí discovered a significant amount of €50 notes hidden within the vehicle. An investigation into the incident is currently underway. The seized cash and drugs will be sent to the Property and Evidence Management System (PEMS) for further analysis.

Crystal meth lab discovered in Killarney

A mother-of-one has been arrested and charged in connection with the discovery of a crystal meth lab in a Killarney apartment.

The 43-year-old was arrested last week following a Garda raid on an apartment in the Knocknasartnett area of Aghadoe.

During the search, Gardaí discovered the necessary components to produce crystal meth.

The woman faces multiple charges, in-

cluding possession of methylamphetamine and possession of stolen and forged identification documents. Gardaí believe that the apartment was being used as a clandestine drug laboratory. Evidence, including chemicals and drug paraphernalia, was seized at the scene.

The accused appeared before Tralee District Court and was remanded in custody. Further charges may be pending as the investigation continues.

St Brendan's Class of 1974 reunion

Over 50 former classmates of St Brendan's College gathered in Killarney to celebrate their 50th anniversary since graduating in 1974.

The reunion, held on October 25, brought together old friends from all over the world, including the UK, Switzerland, and Australia.

The idea for the reunion was sparked by

Michael J. O'Connell from Ballyduff, who realized the 50-year milestone was approaching. With the help of St Brendan's principal, Sean Coffey, and the power of social media, a WhatsApp group was

formed, and the word spread. The reunion attendees also had the opportunity to meet six members of the current student council. These young men spoke confidently about their experiences at St. Brendan's and their aspirations for the future. One student even jokingly remarked that he looked forward to attending his own 50-year reunion in 2075.

The group also embarked on a tour of the school, visiting the archives which date back to 1860.

The day concluded with a celebratory dinner at the International Hotel, attended by over 60 members of the class of 1974. Some former classmates who had been unable to attend earlier events joined the festivities, making the reunion even more special.

Christmas Day Dip organiser steps down

After 15 dedicated years, Niki McCarthy has announced her decision to step down as the organiser of the annual Christmas Day Dip at Dundag.

McCarthy, who started the event in memory of her sister Sylvan Money, has expressed her gratitude for the support and participation of the community over the years.

"After much careful consideration, I have decided to step aside from organising the Christmas Day Dip. It was a difficult decision, but after 15 years, it feels like the right time. I am grateful and proud to have created an event that has become a cherished part of so many people's Christmas traditions," she said. The event has raised a significant amount for charity, with over €68,500 donated to Aware. McCarthy thanked

the volunteers, lifeguards, and sponsors who have contributed to the success of the Dip. She also expressed her appreciation for her family's support.

"My husband, Dave, who spent days preparing for the event and has been there every Christmas morning from 6 a.m., making the much-needed hot drinks—now, finally, he can enjoy a well-deserved Christmas morning liein,” she added.

Council outdoor staff the real key to success

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has congratulated everybody involved in the successful Tidy Towns campaign which resulted in a gold medal winning performance and secured the Kerry county award, despite stiff opposition

Killarney was awarded a total of 384 marks which was an impressive nine more than last year when the town was declared Ireland’s tidiest large town. This year it gained additional points for tidiness and litter control, community involvement, streetscape and public places, green spaces, landscaping and sustainability as well as in the categories for residential areas, approach roads, streets and lanes.

Chamber Co-President, Johnny McGuire, a long-time Tidy Towns stalwart, said the success was a personal triumph for Killarney Municipal District Council’s outdoor staff who lead by example and set an incredible standard every year.

“Their wholehearted commitment and dedication is the key to Killarney’s success and we thank them, most sincerely, for everything that they do,” Mr McGuire said.

“While they will be delighted with the gold medal, they will undoubtedly be a little disappointed that Killarney didn’t win the coveted overall award for the second time but that day will come too,” he said.

The Chamber Co-President also thanked the council management and staff and the elected members who spearhead the Tidy Towns effort every year and he

Santa will be popping in to say hello to all the kids before the big day, and this will be followed by a unique screening of the Christmas movie 'Elf' in the auditorium at Great Southern.

AADI's life-changing ambassador dogs will also be there to greet all those attending the event.

“This Christmas celebration is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season with friends and family, and we are delighted to partner with Great Southern Killarney to raise much-needed funds

for Corcoran’s charity of the year, Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland (AADI). praised them for the great enthusiasm and foresight they show when preparing and presenting Killarney in the best possible light.

Mr McGuire also thanked the Tidy Towns volunteers who turn out day after day to ensure the town is looking its best.

“Where would we be without the dedicated volunteers? The effort they make is magnificent and Killarney owes them an enormous debt of gratitude for their admirable sense of civic pride,” he said.

Mr McGuire said the reintroduction of the Killarney Looking Good Competition in 2023 brought renewed enthusiasm and a great focus to the Tidy Towns campaign, and the strong performance at a national level this year and last can be attributed to the exceptionally high standard set by the Looking Good event. He added that the spirit of the late Fr Michael Murphy and Yvonne Quill, true Tidy Towns champions, lives on in Killarney and the sense of community pride they had is stronger than ever.

“I have never heard so many people, locals as well as visitors, saying that they have never seen Killarney looking so good so to everybody involved, the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce says thank you and feel free to take a well-deserved bow,” he added.

Glenflesk GAA Club is hosting a special Rambling House on Saturday, November 16 to raise funds for local man Jerry O’Leary. The event will take place from 8pm to 11pm in the Glenflesk GAA Hall.

The Rambling House will feature a fantastic lineup of talented musicians and

singers, promising a night of great music, song, and storytelling. All proceeds from the event will go directly to Jerry O’Leary to support him through a challenging time.

Rathmore woman joins relief efforts after devastating floods ravage Valencia

Samantha Cahill, a native of Rathmore, spoke to The Killarney Advertiser this week recalling her lived experience from last week’s flash floods in Spain.

She has been a resident and English teacher in Spain for over 11 years. Samantha lives and works in the town of Torrent, which is just a 15-minute metro ride to Valencia. Over the past week and a half she has witnessed first-hand the devastation and aftermath of the disaster that has gripped the region.

The floods struck with alarming speed and severity. Last Tuesday, as Samatha was working, an alert came from the local town hall around lunchtime, warning of severe weather and advising schools to close early at 3:30pm. That evening, after a video call with her father back in Ireland, she set out for a brief shopping trip, noticing ominous lightning streaking the sky. “The lightning was crazy,” she recalled. “I’ve never seen anything like it before.”

WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION

By nightfall, the storm had worsened, and videos of flooding and destruction were quickly circulating among her Spanish friends. Torrent, where she lives, sits on a hill, sparing it the worst of the flooding, but the low-lying areas below were submerged. “There is a dry riverbed in Torrent that usually has no water at all. By Tuesday night, it had turned into a fully flowing river, carrying water with immense force into nearby towns like Picanya and Paiporta,” she explained.

As news emerged of the devastation in those two towns on Wednesday, Samantha joined friends to see if they could offer any assistance. “Hundreds of cars were overturned in Picanya, with flooding and debris everywhere,” she said.

RELIEF EFFORTS

Moved by the destruction, they continued to Paiporta, where the damage was even more profound. “It was heartbreaking. People were out on the streets, carrying suitcases and belongings. I couldn’t help but break down in

tears,” she added.

Samantha spent Wednesday through Saturday volunteering with local cleanup efforts, working tirelessly alongside hundreds of others to clear debris from the streets and help affected residents.

“By Saturday, the military had arrived, and many park rangers and firefighters from nearby towns and cities joined the relief efforts,” she said

On Monday, Samantha returned to school. “The kids needed to get back to some level of normality,” she said. But for many residents, the effects of the flooding continue to disrupt daily life. “A lot of people in the worst-affected places are still without clean running water, electricity, and internet. From Torrent alone, over 300 people had to be evacuated to a local sports complex, and many others in neighbouring towns had to move in with family members because of the destruction caused," she said.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

While the impacts of the event will stay with Samantha for a long time she said "It was truly heartwarming to witness how the locals came together, to support the locals in the affected towns."

At the time of writing, over a week after the floods, authorities have confirmed the recovery of 217 bodies —211 of them in the eastern Valencia region. Search efforts remain ongoing, with at least 89 people still unaccounted for. Police, firefighters and military personnel continue to search the flood-ravaged areas, hoping to find and assist the missing.

Local man Pat Moriarty releases new album

Local musician Pat Moriarty has released a new album titled ‘The Ballad of Dan Allman’.

The album is a collection of traditional Irish ballads that have been a part of the Tiernaboul man’s life for many years. Growing up in a musical family, Moriarty was exposed to music from a young age. "There was always music in our house. My grandparents were always singing at home, and my mother loved to sing. I learned a lot of songs and then I loved singing ballads,” he said.

Moriarty's musical journey has taken him through various stages, from singing with friends and neighbours to performing in local bars as part of the group ‘The Rowans.’

The album's title track, ‘The Ballad of Dan Allman’, is a poignant tribute to the Rockfield man who lost his life in Headford Junction Ambush during the War of Independence in March 1921.

The album also features Moriarty's

original composition, ‘The Ballad of the Hometown’, which he wrote while feeling homesick while living and working in Germany.

‘The Ballad of Dan Allman’ is now available in most record shops.

Gum litter taskforce roadshow hits Killarney

The Gum Litter Taskforce's ‘Bin It!’ roadshow made a stop in Killarney this week, educating school children about the importance of responsible litter disposal.

Pupils from Lissivigeen National School participated in an hour-long workshop, learning about the environmental impact of gum litter and how they can contribute to a cleaner future. The interactive ses-

sion, led by experienced actors, aimed to foster positive habits and encourage proper waste disposal.

"Young people are increasingly environmentally conscious, but there's still work

to be done," said a Gum Litter Taskforce representative. "Our roadshow focuses on educating children at a crucial age, when habits are formed. By encouraging responsible behaviour, we can make a significant difference in reducing gum litter."

Research has shown that lifestyle habits are established early in life, making

schoolchildren a key target audience for litter prevention campaigns. The Gum Litter Taskforce's ‘Bin It!’ programme aims to address this issue by providing engaging and informative workshops. Over the next eight weeks, the roadshow will travel to 25 counties across Ireland, reaching over 7,000 students in 68 schools

Chamber briefs Chambers on Killarney’s needs

Greater connectivity, particularly focusing on better access by rail, air and road to and from Kerry, was close to the top of the agenda when the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce executive met with Finance Minister Jack Chambers for an important pre-election briefing.

The cost of doing business, greater supports for smaller operators and the need for a more intense focus on the provision of housing also formed a key part of their discussions which were facilitated by Fianna Fáil general election candidate Linda Gordon Kelleher.

The Chamber executive met with Minister Chambers in the Killarney Park Hotel while he was canvassing with the candidate, and the business representative organisation described the encounter as constructive, practical and helpful.

“He was well briefed on the topics of key interest here in Killarney. Minister Chambers listened to what we had to say and he was very attentive and forward-thinking in his response,” said Chamber Co-President Johnny McGuire.

The Chamber officials also stressed the need for more urgency with the delivery of pledges to construct a new N22 Farranfore-Lissivigeen road and the development of a promised third level tourism and hospitality college at the former Pretty Polly site on Park Road. An Taoiseach Simon Harris visits Killarney

An Taoiseach Simon Harris visited Killarney this week to support local Fine Gael candidate Billy O'Shea.

During his visit, An Taoiseach and O'Shea met with local residents and business owners, discussing priority issues including housing, infrastructure development, and economic growth for the area.

"I am honoured to have the support of An Taoiseach Simon Harris as we work to build a brighter future for Kerry," said Billy O'Shea.

was also highlighted as a priority, as was the need to provide sufficient URDF funding to meet local requirements.

Chamber also sought assurances on the finance required for the necessary infrastructure to tackle traffic congestion in Killarney, including the construction of a multi-storey car park and new inner relief and slip roads.

Given the critical importance of Killarney National Park to Kerry, the minister was also briefed on the need to sanction additional funding for the National Parks and Wildlife Service to allow hugely important projects to be brought to fruition.

“Minister Chambers was very favourably disposed to what we had to say,” said Mr McGuire.

It was stressed to the minister that as Killarney is Ireland’s premier tourism town, it has a whole range of support needs to improve infrastructure and opportunities.

Chamber said a town of its importance needs to have its interests adequately represented at the cabinet table.

The upgrading of critical infrastructure like the Killarney Bypass to reduce traffic congestion was a key topic during the visit.

"My goal is to make sure the people of Kerry have a strong voice at the government level. I am deeply committed to helping our communities, addressing their concerns, and working towards real solutions for the challenges we face. With the Taoiseach’s support and a strong voice in Dáil Éireann, we can make a lasting impact for the people of Kerry."

Lissivigeen roundabout lane markings repainted

Fianna Fáil's Michael Cahill has praised Kerry County Council for their swift action in repainting faded lane markings at the busy Lissivigeen Roundabout.

Cahill stated that he had received numerous complaints from concerned residents about the deteriorating road markings, which were leading to confusion and potentially dangerous driving conditions. He brought the issue to the attention of the council, who promptly addressed the problem.

"This is a vital junction, especially with the National School nearby. It's crucial to ensure road safety for everyone, particularly children," Cahill said.

Predeceased by her son Podge, Margaret leaves behind a legacy of style, kindness, and community spirit. She is deeply mourned by her loving daughters Pam, Valerie, Grace, and Rachel; sons-in-law, grandchildren and a wide circle of relatives, friends, and neighbours.

Margaret's passion for fashion was infectious. She was more than a shopkeeper; she was a trusted advisor, helping women of all ages navigate the ever-changing world of style. Her warm smile and cheerful demeanour made every visit to The Eyecatcher Boutique a delightful experience.

Beyond her business, Margaret was a force for good in the community. She organised numerous fashion shows, rais-

Motorsport Ireland President and rally star visit MTU Tralee

Motorsport Ireland President Aidan Harper and Rally Academy member Aoife Raftery made a high-profile visit to Munster Technological University (MTU) Tralee on Monday.

The visit coincided with The Rose Hotel Kerry Winter Rally, which was held the previous day and used MTU's campus as its service park for the first time.

The event was a significant step towards a larger goal: bringing the World Rally Championship (WRC) to Ireland.

MTU Tralee has been shortlisted – along with venues in Waterford and Limerickas a potential host location for the WRC.

The collaboration between the university and Winter Rally organiser Kerry Motor Club was another step in the process.

"We're working closely with the Major Bids Department, which is based in Killarney, to secure government funding," said President Harper. "Our dream is to have Ireland on the WRC calendar in 2026 or 2027. This is a major opportunity for the country, and we're determined to make it happen."

Raftery, the first female driver in the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy, shared her experiences in the Junior FIA European Rally Championship with MTU students.

"It was fantastic to be at MTU and to inspire the next generation of engineers, business leaders, and sports scientists," said Raftery. "Rallying is a complex sport that requires a wide range of skills, from driving and navigation to engineering and team management. I hope to encourage more young people to pursue their passions in motorsport."

Harper and Raftery also visited the university’s virtual reality suite where they were introduced to the school’s road safety demonstrator.

“I was very impressed with the road safety simulator, this should be rolled out to schools and colleges around the country and use it educate drivers in the dangers of using a mobile phone while

driving and how speeding and lack of concentration are all contributory factors in road traffic accidents,” she said.

Raftery also recorded a road safety message on behalf Kerry County Council where she emphasised the importance of road safety, particularly for young drivers.

"I'm a strong advocate for the 'Keep the Race In Its Place' campaign," she said. "It's crucial to remember that driving is a serious responsibility, and we must always prioritise safety."

Other guests included Colette O’Connor of Tralee Chamber Alliance and Kerry County Council’s recently appointed road safety officer Declan Keogh.

Suspected burglar rescued from vent above Limerick fast food restaurant

A man suspected of attempted burglary is scheduled to appear before Limerick District Court this morning after being rescued from a vent above a fast-food restaurant.

Firefighters from Limerick City and County were called on Wednesday to extract the man, who was found stuck in the vent on the restaurant's roof. The individual was discovered by a passerby and is believed to have been trapped in the vent for over 12 hours. Firefighters used specialized equipment, including a Bronto skylight lift, to reach and free him.

Gardaí from Roxboro Road station arrested the man on-site. He was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Limerick Garda Station and has been formally charged in connection with the incident.

Ireland welcomes first Palestinian ambassador in historic appointment

For the first time, the Cabinet has appointed a full Ambassador of Palestine to Ireland, following a recommendation from Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin.

Dr. Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, who currently serves as the Palestinian Head of Mission in Ireland, has been appointed to this new role. This decision follows the

Government’s move last May to formally recognise the State of Palestine.

On September 29, formal diplomatic relations between Ireland and the State of Palestine were established through an exchange of diplomatic notes.

On October 17, the Palestinian government officially informed Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs of its decision to elevate Palestine's representation in Ire-

land to a resident Embassy, in line with the Vienna Convention.

Ireland first approved the establishment of a Palestinian Delegation in Dublin in late 1993, and in early 2011 the government raised the delegation’s status to a “Palestinian Mission,” with the Delegate-General receiving the title of “Ambassador-Head of Mission.”

Now, with the Palestinian Mission’s status upgraded to a resident Embassy, it will enjoy the full range of privileges and immunities provided under the Vienna Convention.

Trump reclaims the White House in a historic political comeback

In what is being called by many as the greatest political comebacks in history, Donald J. Trump was re-elected as the 47th President of the United States, fighting off the challenge of current vice-president Kamala Harris.

The win marks Trump’s return to the White House, making him the first president in U.S. history to serve non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland. After a hard-fought and highly polarised election season, Trump's victory was secured by key wins in battleground states, where voter turnout surged to historic highs. Exit polls indicate that Trump’s MAGA message resonated strongly with many voters concerned about the economy, immigration, and national security.

In a victory speech held in front of thousands of cheering supporters in Mar-aLago, Trump celebrated the outcome and vowed to “make America stronger than ever before.”

“This is a victory for all Americans who want their voices heard and their country protected,” Trump declared, amid chants of “U-S-A.” He promised to prioritise policies focused on economic growth, increased border security, and rebuilding America’s global standing.

“We are going to bring back the America that we all know and love,” he said. “This isn’t just about winning; this is about a rebirth for our country. We’re ready to put Americans first again and make sure everyone in this great nation can prosper.”

Trump also extended a message to those who voted against him. “To those who

CSO reveals earning stats

According to new data released today by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Dublin recorded the highest median earnings in the country last year, with a figure of €47,873.

Kildare followed closely at €46,819, then Meath at €44,902, Wicklow at €44,750, and Cork at €44,348. All these counties reported median earnings above the national median of €43,221.

The CSO report also highlighted the counties with the lowest median annual earnings in 2023, with Donegal at €35,010, Monaghan at €35,894, and Kerry at €37,151.

In terms of income distribution, 56.7% of those in the top 1% income bracket were Dublin residents, the CSO noted.

The data also reveals that the employment gender balance last year was almost equal, with men making up 50.9% of jobs active for at least 50 weeks, and women accounting for 49.1%.

The report indicated that men generally had higher average incomes and represented nearly three-quarters of the highest-earning 1%. In contrast, women dominated the health and social work

sectors, making up more than 75% of the workforce in these fields, though they comprised only about a third of the sector's top earners.

Additionally, the CSO data showed a notable gender gap in employment representation among certain age groups. For those aged 30-39, men accounted for 52.3% of employment, while women represented 47.7%. In the 25-29 age group, men made up 51.8% of total employments, with women representing the remaining 48.2%.

didn’t support us this time, I hear you. This country belongs to all Americans, and I intend to work tirelessly for every single one of you.”

In a concession speech delivered late Wednesday night, President Kamala Harris addressed the nation, urging Americans to remain united despite their differences.

“While tonight’s results are not what we hoped for, we respect the democratic process and the will of the American people,” Harris said. “I want to congratulate Mr. Trump on his victory, and I sincerely hope he will govern in the interests of all Americans.”

Harris emphasised the progress made during her administration in areas like healthcare, climate change, and education and encouraged Trump’s team to build on that work. “We’ve come far as a nation in tackling some of our biggest challenges, and I encourage the new administration to continue the progress we’ve started,” she stated.

In a hopeful tone, Harris addressed her supporters, saying, “Our work does not end here. We will continue to fight for justice, equality, and opportunity, because the future of America depends on each of us holding true to our values.”

Following Donald Trump's election victory, world leaders have swiftly extended their congratulations. Taoiseach Simon Harris stated on twitter, "The people of the United States have spoken, and Ireland will work to deepen and strengthen the historic and unbreakable bonds between our people and our nations in the years ahead."

Autumn Nation Series kicks off with blockbuster clash

Despite four exciting Autumn series matchups lined up over the next month, not many Irish rugby fans are looking beyond tonight’s (Friday) blockbuster clash between Ireland and New Zealand.

Over the past eight years, Ireland and New Zealand have developed a fierce rivalry, sparked by Ireland's historic win in 2016 in Chicago. That 40-29 victory at Soldier Field ended a 111-year drought against the All Blacks. Since then, the teams have played eight times, splitting victories with four wins each, producing matches that rank among the sport’s best showcases.

Despite the competitive stakes, Irish

players would likely trade their victories in these Test matches for a win in a World Cup knockout game, especially given last October's heartbreaking 2824 loss. Friday’s game may not erase that disappointment, but it promises to be a fierce, thrilling encounter in a packed Lansdowne Road. Interim head coach Simon Easterby anticipates a lively atmosphere: "New Zealand in town, a sold-out stadium—it doesn’t get much better."

Currently ranked third, New Zealand arrives fresh from a 24-22 victory over England, though England nearly snatched the game in the final minutes.

Volunteers battle invasive rhododendron

in

Killarney National Park

Men's shed members from across Ireland, joined by local Meitheal Volunteers, descended upon Abbey Wood within the Killarney National Park.

Their mission was to confront the relentless spread of the invasive rhododendron, a plant that poses a serious threat to the park’s delicate ecosystem. This collaborative effort was initiated at the invitation of the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. The volunteers' dedication and hard work were

evident as they tirelessly cleared the invasive species, working diligently until Wednesday evening.

The rhododendron, with its aggressive growth and ability to outcompete native plants, has long been a concern for park officials.

The volunteers' efforts were crucial in mitigating its impact on the park's biodiversity. By removing the invasive plant, they helped to preserve the delicate balance of the Killarney National Park's ecosystem and safeguard its unique flora and fauna.

Vacant Property Grant payments increase

With the shortage of properties available in the market nationally, particularly newly built homes, the Vacant Property Refurbishment

Grant has become a significant factor in the 2nd hand housing market.

There has been a huge increase in the number of Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant payments issued in Kerry in the third quarter of the year. However, figures indicate that the number of grants paid out is still a very small percentage of the total number of applications.

Nationally €45 million has been paid out by the state in grants for the renovation of 867 homes.

The Vacant Property Refurbishment

Grant was launched in 2022 and allows a payment of up to €70,000 to renovate a vacant or derelict property to live in or rent, €50,000 applicable to homes vacant for 2 years or more and a further €20,000 for derelict properties.

The grant is distributed by local authorities and once an application is approved, the applicant has 13 months to complete the refurbishment works to draw down the money.

Since its introduction 29 applicants have been paid the grant in Kerry.

In the two years to June of this year, only 6 applications were approved but the rate of payments issued has rapidly increased over the summer, with 23 payments made in the last three months alone, resulting in 80% of all grant pay-

ments issued in Kerry issued in the last three months.

The level of grants drawn down in Kerry is still a low percentage of total applications and just under 500 applications have been made for the refurbishment grant since it was introduced, and just under 6% of those have been successful in drawing down the grant.

Of those applications, 227 were approved, meaning only around 12% of approved applicants are successful in drawing down the grant payment, the vast majority in the last three months. It is expected in the coming weeks and months, that the number of grant payments will continue to ramp up as thousands nationally complete refurbishment work and draw down full grant awards.

We wish we had just one more chance

To see that tender smile

To laugh with you again my dear Just for a little while.

Gone too soon but not forgotten

Forever you will remain

Our guiding light, our shining star

Until we see your face again.

In loving memory of a dear grandfather John (Jack) Harrington 25 O’Kellys Villas, Killarney and Cloughaulabeg, Millstreet who died on 15th November 2000.

The moment you died

Our hearts were torn in two

One side filled with heartache

The other died with you.

Remembering you as our grandad is easy

We do it every day

But missing you is the heartache

That never goes away.

We hold you so tightly within our hearts

And there you shall remain

Until the day arrives that we meet again.

Always loved and remembered by your grandchidren and great grandchildren.

Anniversary Mass on Tuesday 12th November at 6.15pm in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.

Kerry land €6m for new stadium

…but ‘work to be done’ to reach €77m target

Kerry GAA have welcomed a €6 million injection from the government’s Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) for the redevelopment of Fitzgerald Stadium – though they admit “there is still much work to be done” if they are to reach their overall target of €77 million. The €6 million will go towards revamping the Scoreboard End of the ground but that is just a small part of the county board’s ambitious plan to modernise the famous Killarney venue. If the project comes to fruition, the O’Sullivan Stand will be rebuilt and the central section of the O’Connor Terrace will be covered with a second tier to be added to the top of the terrace. The new roof will stretch

roughly from one 20-metre line to the other. It is also planned to convert the Lewis Road End to an all-seater uncovered stand.

“This funding marks an important milestone for our community and brings us one step closer to realising our vision for a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a home for our players, supporters, and the people of Kerry,” Kerry GAA said.

“We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering support from our local community, whose passion for Gaelic games and commitment to this project have been nothing short of inspiring. We also extend heartfelt thanks to our local

councillors and government officials, especially TD Brendan Griffin and Tánaiste Micheál Martin in particular, whose efforts have been crucial in securing this investment. A special acknowledgment goes to Kerry County Council, CEO Martin O’ Donoghue, and his team of directors, who have backed this project from the very start.

“We would also like to give special recognition to Minister Norma Foley, whose tireless work behind the scenes over the past several months has been pivotal.

“However, as we look ahead to our ambitious plans for a full redevelopmentwhich are projected to cost €77 million - we understand that there is still much

work to be done. Kerry GAA remains committed to exploring all available avenues to secure the additional funding necessary to make our dream for Fitzgerald Stadium a reality.” One such avenue is the now discontinued ‘Golden Visa’ scheme which allowed foreign millionaires to invest in Irish projects in exchange for immigration permission. The government scrapped the initiative in February 2023 but not before Kerry GAA had sourced almost €40 million in funding from China. The government refused to accept Kerry’s application for technical reasons which are disputed by Kerry GAA, leading to a High Court challenge which is ongoing.

Football for players of a certain vintage

Adam Moynihan speaks to Tommy Griffin about his annual Gaelic football tournament for players aged 35 and older

Eighteen teams from Galway, Laois, Armagh, Cork, Dublin and Kerry will compete in this year’s Tommy Griffin Over 35 Football Tournament, which takes place on Saturday (November 9) in Dingle.

The event, which has been running since 2012, has become a popular feature of the local sporting calendar for footballers of a certain vintage.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Tommy explained how the competition came about.

“A few of us were in the bar one night talking about kicking a bit of ball,” the former Kerry player said. “Fellas had retired by that time, so we said we’d try to gather a few lads from old teams. We made some enquiries and there was a bit of interest. We managed to gather eight teams the first year.

“Séamus Moynihan was a real driving force behind it in fairness to him. He

brought a Sem team for years. We got teams from Cork and Dublin as well, and it grew from there.”

In the 2024 edition, a total of 26 matches will be staged at two venues:

Páirc an Ághasaigh (the home grounds of Dingle GAA) and Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne. Each team will be guaranteed at least two games with the losers from Round 1 going through to the Shield.

Just as important as the football itself is the social aspect of the tournament.

“It’s a social weekend with a bit of football thrown in,” Tommy jokes.

“It’s a great way of meeting up with lads you haven’t seen in years, and a great way of meeting lads you might have played against but never met. Shane Ryan (the former Dublin footballer) has been down a couple of times and the first time I met him was in the bar after the tournament, even though I actually

marked him a few times.

“And there are lads who never played county level who get a chance to play against these county players. Stuff like that is good.”

Tommy, who won five All-Ireland medals during a stellar intercounty career, says the support of local businesses makes a big difference.

“We kind of fund it ourselves but suppliers for the bar (Muiris Dan’s) and Deirdre and Micheál from The Fish Box restaurant have always been very good to us. It’s great to get support from Denis Murphy from GMIB.ie as well.”

The SMERC recovery truck will be on site in Páirc an Ághasaigh to help players get the bodies right between games. After all, while they might be looking forward to their couple of pints later in the evening, they’re still competitive sportsmen.

“Ah look, it’s a bit of craic to start off,” Tommy notes, “but when the ball is thrown in, there’s always a bit of needle in it.”

PARTICIPATING TEAMS: Clann Éireann (Armagh), Claregalway (Galway), Cork Vets, Currow, Dohenys (Cork), Dr Crokes, Duhallow (Cork), Gneeveguilla, John Mitchels, Kerry Masters, Portlaoise (Laois), Raheny (Dublin), Rathmore, Russell Rovers (Cork), Spa, St Pat’s, Stradbally (Laois), Tuosist.

Fitzgerald previews the Munster Senior Club Championship quarterfinal between Dr Crokes and Castlehaven

The histrionics of Dr Crokes’ Late Late Show versus Dingle are unlikely to be sufficient on Sunday against Castlehaven. Dr Crokes have home venue (throw-in at 1.15pm) and they will need it as these powerful Cork and Munster champions have ambitions to go all the way to Croker and lift the Andy Merrigan Cup for the first time.

Last year they outfoxed Dingle for the Munster crown on a Limerick pitch that was unplayable – the match should not have gone ahead.

Castlehaven will be hell-bent on avenging Dr Crokes who defeated them twice in past Munster campaigns. Those Crokes’ teams of past eras were battle-hardened, mature opposition for any team. Now it is the reverse. This Castlehaven team is battle-hardened. They showed that against Nemo Rangers in the Cork final when they retained their title and as Munster champions they are favourites to go all the way to Croke Park now that the other provincial winners of 2023 have been beaten this year.

“We will respect Dr Crokes, especially in their home ground, and also after defeating Dingle who gave us a huge challenge last year,” said George Dennis, the Castlehaven native, when I spoke to him earlier this week. “We will be coming with great support and the added spice of the Kerry v Cork rivalry will entice a huge attendance with football supporters expecting a great game.”

George has done trojan work for colleges football in Kerry where he taught at Killorglin Community College. His great friend, the late Paudie Palmer from Templenoe, did exactly the same for Cork colleges football and for his wonderful commentaries on Cork's local radio station, County Sound.

FROM JUNIOR

Castlehaven includes the two fishing villages of Union Hall and Castletownsend. The club re-established in 1965, coming all the way from South West Cork junior level in 1969 and through the ranks to their first Cork senior championship in 1989 captained by the very influential Larry Tompkins and Niall Cahalane as the rock in defence. They went on to win six more Cork SFCs and four Munster SFC titles.

How did they manage to entice Kildare man Tompkins to join Castlehaven? George picks up the story. “Larry Tompkins was in New York playing for Donegal with brothers Anthony and Vincie Collins, uncles of Castlehaven captain Mark Collins. They became friends and he was

Powerful Cork champions Castlehaven roll into town

persuaded to come home. Tompkins was a huge addition to Cork and to Castlehaven, both as playmaker and scorer in chief.”

The same surnames keep cropping up in the present team: Cahalane, Collins, Hurley and Maguire. “Niall Cahalane is no stranger to Pat Spillane and to Kerry supporters,” George said. “He has three sons on the team: Damien, Conor and Jack, who was Man of the Match in the county final. Jack plays at wing forward but he could pop up anywhere, just like Brian Looney for Dr Crokes. Damien lines out at full back and we hope he will be fit after going off injured against Nemo. Conor came on as a sub for Damien at half-time in the final.

“Goalkeeper Darragh is the brother of trainer Seánie Cahalane, the winning captain in 2012 and 2013. The Cahalanes are first cousins of the three Maguires. Of course, we also have the Hurley brothers, Brian and Michael, in the full forward line.”

How are the preparations going? “We have a number of players working in Cork where they train during the week and all return to Castlehaven for the Friday session. The club is very strong at present at underage level, LGFA and a senior squad of 40 players.”

Is George confident that this is the year Castlehaven can go all the way to win the All-Ireland?

“Yes, I hope so, but first we don’t underestimate Dr Crokes, especially with Pat O’Shea in charge. I remember an occasion having the Killorglin CC team playing Killarney CC at Fossa. We were leading by four or five points with two minutes to go and this small fella who had come on for Killarney scored two goals. I hope Dr Crokes don't repeat the feat on Sunday. I am very aware of Pat O’Shea’s influence as a manager. He has a great football brain and is a brilliant strategist. Very much fingers crossed that Seánie Cahalane will get the game plan right.”

SEVEN

NEW PLAYERS

Denis Coleman, a selector on the Dr Crokes team, did say to me that home advantage will be helpful but added that Castlehaven are a proven team.

“They have so many big names and their record speaks for itself, especially their recent back-to-back Cork title wins over Nemo Rangers,” Denis said. “We have some very experienced players at the highest level, but we also had seven new men playing in the county final versus Dingle. I suppose one could say that it is a leap into the unknown on such a big

occasion.”

Will Crokes have all players available for selection?

“Yes, all good and we are looking forward to this mighty challenge from Castlehaven. We have experience of big occasions in the past and Sunday’s venture is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our magnificent facilities and the great work done by so many Crokes people, especially this week dealing with the logistics of making it a pleasant experience for the large crowd that will certainly attend. Crokes v Castlehaven will be a big draw.”

Since Dr Crokes' venue is in a residential area the club, gardaí and Order of Malta have put in place restrictions to cater for the match patrons. You are advised to respect local residents' rights and not obstruct gateways. Very limited parking will be available close to the venue and match-goers are advised to use the public car parks at High Street, Rock Road, New Street and College Street. Come early.

FIRIES DRUMS

“The day will come when Firies drums will sound in Farranfore.”

Well, they certainly sounded at Austin Stack Park, Tralee where the spirit, determination and patience of this very young Firies team was rewarded in their ET win over Ardfert in the Kerry Junior Premier final. They won the Kerry Junior competition in 2022. The Premier grants entry into the Munster Club Championship. They will make the long trip to Walsh Park, Waterford tomorrow (Saturday) to take on Fenor, the champions of the Déise.

Earlier this week I spoke with Derek Comerford, Firies PRO, who said the Kerry final display was promising. They did it without Jack Sherwood, their vastly experienced player.

“Unfortunately Jack has been injured for some time, but it was so encouraging to see how the younger team members stood up to the challenge of Ardfert, who have won two All-Irelands. Hopefully Jack will be able to come on at some stage on Saturday.”

Niall Donohue’s two mighty, long-range points were pivotal, bringing Firies to extra time.

“Niall has proved himself with East Kerry in the past and remember we eventually won with 14 men after Diarmuid O’Mahony’s black card,” Derek noted. “This is a very young team. We have great structures in place at underage level, winning at U13 and U15. The future looks bright as these come through to minor and then to senior.”

What augurs well for the rapidly populating Firies is the number of excellent coaches and the fact that no fewer than nine players scored in the county final. First on the bus will be the much-travelled octogenarian Michael Allen. How fitting it is that such a great GAA supporter was able to view in-person his native parish win the Junior Premier final. He has been attending games for well over seven decades and to finally see his own parish crowned Kerry champions was heaven on earth.

Add in divine inspiration from Firies native Fr John Ahern, another sports aficionado who spurred them on. Miraculous. Heaven above will be busy with Fr Paddy Doc and Fr Tom Looney pleading the case of Dr Crokes.

Equally proud was former Firies player Thady O’Donoghue, whom I believe would have made it onto the Kerry team in the early 1960s. He was that good a corner back, but his work took him to Dublin where he starred with Clann na nGael.

Another very proud man recently was Hooker Kennedy, the quintessential GAA club man, who saw his beloved Doon win their first Limerick hurling title by defeating the mighty Piarsaigh who were chasing the three-in-a-row.

Killarney-based retired vet Noel Ryan is still on cloud nine, or maybe ten, after seeing his native parish’s success. Doon led to doom when the local bar ran dry in the after-match get-together. Celebrating a 135-year famine is thirsty work.

PAUL COTTER RIP

The news of the passing of Paul Cotter earlier this week saddened us all. He was the friendly host at the halfway house on Mahony’s Point, the pick-me-up provider after yet again double-bogeying the 9th, the easiest hole on the course (for some). You rang up from the 9th tee box and the answer was always the same. “Not a bother: the same as usual.” Telepathy is God-given.

Known as the Chapel, Paul was the High Priest who consoled, cajoled and provided freshly baked scones, breakfast rolls and whatever you’re having yourself. We knew him best on very quiet winter days when footfall was sporadic at best. Tea flowed and so did the yarns. The golden principle was that fact should never come in the way of spoiling a funny story. He loved them; we loved them. Paul, did you hear the one about the time…? The referee has called for the ball. Time is up for Paul. We’ll miss his presence in the Chapel, but the memories of stopping off at Paul’s, the banter, the craic, and much more will stay in one’s memory. Comhbrón ó chroí to his family and friends worldwide.

ATHLETIC SCRIBBLINGS

Former Kerry-winning captain Jimmy Deenihan will launch his new book Athletic Scribblings at Sherwood’s Bar, Farranfore on Friday, November 15 at 7.30pm. I am looking forward to reading about such immortals as Jim O’Shea, Mike O’Connor et al who continue to thrive in Tír nan Óg.

All past and present club members as well as supporters around Kerry are invited. It will be of particular interest to locals charting the athletic activities in the greater Farranfore area and indeed Kerry. The book is priced at a very modest €15.

Also, best of luck to Gillian O’Sullivan who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the National Athletics Awards in Santry on November 20. Well deserved. Maith thú, Gillian.

Youth badminton takes centre stage in Killarney

The 2024/2025 Kerry Juvenile Badminton season got underway on Saturday last in Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre. This competition was a “fun” event to give Kerry’s first-time players a taste for competitive badminton.

Killarney Badminton Club was well represented on the day with Conall Murphy finishing second in the U16 category, Oscar O’Sullivan finishing third and Cormac Flanagan finishing fourth.

Events were staged at U10, U12, U14 and U16 levels for both boys and girls. Kerry Badminton expressed their gratitude to Suzanne for taking the entries and making the draw; to Mary who ran the desk; to the juvenile club volunteers on the day; to Tom Bradley for the photos; and also to Siobhán and Craig for the pop-up Yonex shop.

Meanwhile, the Munster F Open and the Munster Senior Open took place in the SETU Arena in Co. Waterford last weekend. Players from Kerry featured in

both competitions. Fergal Hannon and Michael Belov Flanagan (both Listowel) took part in the Munster Senior Open on Saturday. Michael lost out to Tony Murphy from Alpha while Fergal made it to the quarter-final before being defeated by Praneel Reddy Vallapureddy (the eventual beaten finalist) from Pembroke in Dublin.

In the Munster Grade F Open, Hassib Ahmad and Alvin Rahman Fahad (both Killarney) teamed up in the doubles, winning their first round game in a close encounter. The second set went all the way to 27-25. Unfortunately, in their second round game they fell to a strong Waterford pairing.

Alvin then paired up with Kingdom’s Jessica O’Loughlin in the mixed doubles where they were unlucky in their game that went to three sets, losing out 21-17 in the third.

A big well done must be said to all competitors on the day and also to all those involved in the running of such competitions.

Talented

Killarney Swimming Club brought home a huge haul of 31 medals from the Blackrock Gala in Douglas on Sunday.

The Killarney competitors claimed 12 gold, nine silver and ten bronze at the event, which was hosted by Blackrock Swimming Club. For some of the Killarney swimmers this was their first ever gala. The gold medals went to Aoibhinn Heinemann (three), Zarah Tomlinson (two), Pádraig Quill (two), Kyrylo Lutchenko (two), Juan Avila, Liam O'Mahony and Beibhinn Kiely. Reece O'Donoghue, Maria Avila, Maro Lucic-Kovacevic, Aideen Casey, Kaia Ferris and Adam Tomlinson also had podium finishes in their respec-

No cup magic as local teams bow out in Round 1

There was no joy for the St Paul’s Ladies Development squad in their NICC Cup match as they got pipped at the post by Athlone in a Round 1 game played in Kilcummin.

It really was a game of two halves as Paul’s looked to have a tight grip on proceedings early on, but Athlone came roaring back in the second period. The loss of Siobhán Burns in the third quarter was a blow but Athlone were also very adept from three-point land and it was here they did the most damage. This was the first game of the season for this team with two County League games coming up this weekend. These games will help sharpen them up ahead of the first Development League game which will be played towards the end of the month.

It was great to see 11 players all getting meaningful game time and there will be plenty of action for them this winter between all the competitions.

Siobhán Burns (3), Katie O’Brien (9), Marguerite Cronin (4), Ava Doherty.

Meanwhile, both of Killarney’s senior men’s basketball teams will be focussing on the league from here on out after they exited the President’s Cup following difficult defeats in Round 1.

Scotts Lakers were unable to match the impressive Titans in Galway as the home team ran out 92-71 winners. Next up is another away trip, this time to Drogheda to take on the Wolves in Division One. The Lakers’ crosstown rivals, the Killarney Cougars, also came up short in their cup opener as they lost 85-113 at home to those Wolves. The Killarney club are back in league action this weekend with an away fixture against Ulster University on Saturday.

Athletic improved greatly in the second half and showed great spirit to get back into the game. They were rewarded with a goal 5 minutes from full time and very nearly grabbed a late equaliser. Well done to Milltown for the sporting game. SENIOR A TEAM: FAI Junior Cup 3rd Round - Ballingarry 0-4 Killarney Athletic A.F.C. Today we travelled away to Ballingarry in the 3rd round of the FAI Junior Cup. A cagey start by both teams early on. 0-0 going in at the break with Atheltic missing some chances early on and the hosts forcing our keeper Caolán into an excellent save late in the half. We came out strong in the second half and got a deserved lead through an excellent finish from Josh Bowler who was a constant threat. We kept pushing and got a second through Luke Doolan with a super finish. Luke got his second with another good finish and finished off his hattrick with a well-placed finish late on. A strong defensive display keeping a clean sheet on the road and, we look forward to the draw for the next round. Thanks to Ballingarry for a good game and for the food & refreshments after the game.

U12 GIRLS SOUTH: Killarney Athletic Blues v Killarney Athletic Whites 1-1. The White team went one up with a lovely strike from Abbey O’Leary mid-way through the first half. There was constant pressure from the Blue team but at half time it was still 1-0 to the White team. Some great chances from both teams in the second half, but with constant threat of goal from Caitlin Hickey, she eventually got their equaliser mid-way in the second half. Both sides had their chances to win the game but some good saves from Laura Hickey and Maya Lesniak made sure the spoils were halved at full time. Captain for Athletic Blue - Maya Lesniak. Captain for Athletic White - Gemma Leahy. U13 BOYS DIVISION 1: Killarney Athletic B 1 Milltown 2. Goalscorer: Sean O’Connor.

Killarney Legion GAA

U17 BOYS: Our minor team finished the long season off with a fine win in an entertaining final played under lights on a great surface in Direen. Legion started well with Oisin Fleming proving a serious threat up front, linking up well with Finan Blackwell. This pairing was joined in the attack by the free back- Darragh Moynihan, who finished off a lovely move to raise what proved to be the decisive goal. To be fair to Cordal, through their Kerry and St. Kieran’s midfielder, Killian Dennehy, worked their way back into contention, and at the break, Legion led by 1-9 to 8 points. Cordal did capitalise on a number of turnovers but found the Legion defence led by Brian O’Connor, Ronan O’Brien, Cillian Murphy, and Fionn Sheahan in no mood to allow any threat to James Murphys goal. Cordal clawed their way to within one point, but the impact of subs Mark Looney and Jake Coffey tilted the game back towards the home side. Some fine points from Oisin Fleming and Samuel Scroope sealed a great win. It was great to see a near full squad of players available after a tough season of injuries, and while only 18 players got a runout, the squad spirit was commendable. Thanks to Cordal players and management on a great game played in a great spirit. Thanks also to Evan Horan for a good job with the whistle. Finally, thanks to the parents and supporters who gave the lads great support tonight as always! Full time Killarney Legion 1-16 Cordal 0-15.

O’DONOGHUE CUP: The competition is tipping away at a nice pace. Rathmore and Dr Crokes are through to the semi-finals by virtue of their recent wins over Kenmare and Gneeveguilla respectively. Spa face Kilcummin on Saturday evening next, November 9th in the quarter final. But of course our interest is on Saturday also when we entertain Glenflesk in Direen with a 3pm throw in. Fossa GAA

EAST KERRY DIV 3 MINOR FINAL: Spa and Fossa served up an absolute cracker in the Fitzgerald Stadium this afternoon in this keenly contested minor final. The first half was evenly balanced, Spa took a two-point lead before Shay McCormick and Harry O’Connor brought Fossa back on level terms. Fossa then enjoyed a period of dominance but didn’t convert it into scores, Luke Doolan hit three points on the bounce for Spa and a brilliant block down by Derek O’Gorman denied Spa a certain goal. Points from Dylan O’Meara and Harry O’Connor left the bare minimum between the teams at the break, Spa 0-6, Fossa 0-5. The second half exploded into life, Cathal Breen led the charge with the opening score, then young Donnacha Vaughan who was on as a blood sub, produced a superb cameo when he finished a flowing Fossa attack to the Spa net for the first goal of the game. Joey McCarthy pulled two back for Spa but scores from Dylan O’Meara and Harry O’Connor had Fossa leading by four points mid-way through the half. It was end to end stuff, great skill, mistakes and brilliant scores all rolled into one! In the 20th minute, Luke Doolan scored a goal for Spa, and he quickly added a further three points to put them two up. Jack Hallissey broke forward to score a great goal in the 28th minute and Dylan O’Meara kicked a free to put Fossa two ahead with time almost up. In the 34th minute Joey McCarthy hit an absolute screamer to the roof of the Fossa net which looked like being

the winner, but Dylan O’Meara showed all his class and composure to land a long range free to bring the game to extra time, full time score Fossa 2-11, Spa 2-11. In the first period of extra time Fionn Doyle broke forward from full back to finish a great move to the net after two minutes, Joey McCarthy and Dylan O’Meara exchanged scores to leave Fossa leading at the break, 3-13 to 2-13. Shay McCormick struck for another Fossa goal at the start of the second half, but Spa replied immediately when Joey McCarthy hit a free to the Fossa net. It was a welter of excitement at this stage with both teams giving it their all, Ronan Bennett and Dylan O’Meara kicked two points, but Spa refused to yield and scored two in reply. In the 9th minute, Ronan Bennett sealed the victory with a goal and Charlie Griffin completed the scoring with a point to leave Fossa winners on a score of 5-16 to 3-15.
