N22 Farranfore to Killarney road plans on display for the first time

The proposed route plans for the N22 Farranfore to Killarney project were showcased to the public for the first time on Tuesday, at the Great Southern Hotel.

The public consultation session ran throughout the day and provided residents, commuters, and other stakeholders a chance to review provisional route maps, learn about the planned infrastructure improvements, and offer their feedback on the project.

Project team members were present to answer questions and discuss the proposals with visitors. This in-person consultation marked a significant step in the planning of the long-anticipated N22 upgrade, which Kerry County Council had been developing in collaboration with Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Department of Transport.

Following initial consultations in 2021, the project progressed to the option selection phase, identifying a preferred transport solution for the 400-metre-wide corridor between Farranfore and Killarney.

Information on display included route maps, insights into the assessment process, and an interactive, Eircode-searchable map that allowed attendees to see potential impacts on their areas. Visitors also had access to downloadable documents and a feedback form, making it easier for them to engage with the project’s consultation phase.

Those unable to attend in person were given the option to explore the project proposals through a virtual consultation

on the official project website, https:// n22.kerrycoco.ie.

The public can view detailed plans and submit feedback online. Submissions can also be sent by Freepost to the Kerry National Roads Office in Castleisland, with the deadline for all feedback set for Friday, December 6. Safety concerns were a primary motivator behind the project, with high collision rates along this stretch of the N22, including 18 fatalities, 45 serious collisions, and 257 minor collisions recorded between 2005 and 2023.

The existing road infrastructure’s limited capacity and lack of active travel options for cyclists and pedestrians highlighted the need for upgrades to accommodate growing traffic volumes and improve safety for all road users.

Kerry County Council said that this consultation would allow the public to share their views and concerns, contributing to a well-informed final plan.

Additionally, those with questions or who wished to request a brochure or feedback form had the option to contact the project team by phone at 066-7183583.

While the project was still subject to changes based on public input and further assessments, Tuesday’s session marked a key milestone toward finalising a route that balanced regional development priorities with safety and environmental considerations.

Road upgrades needed to address accessibility issues

The current N22 between Farranfore and Killarney presents significant safety and capacity issues, especially due to limited active travel options for cyclists and pedestrians.

With increasing traffic and rising demand for safe, sustainable travel, the proposed upgrades are crucial for Killarney town. The new plans will incorporate ‘Core Active Travel’ routes (marked in green), adding dedicated paths and safer lanes for cyclists and pedestrians. Existing routes (in orange) and planned Kerry

County Council Active Travel projects (in red) are also integrated into the design to create a seamless, accessible network for non-motorised transport.

The upgrades may even include additional neighbourhood schemes to ensure better local connectivity.

This enhanced infrastructure is expected to ease congestion, improve road safety, and support Killarney’s tourism industry by offering a more user-friendly and sustainable travel environment for visitors and locals alike.

Ukrainian community expresses a thousand gratitudes to Killarney

Marking 1,000 days since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian community in Killarney unfurled a 20-metre Ukrainian flag along one of the town's central streets.

This symbolic act was carried out to draw attention to the ongoing war in Ukraine and to express heartfelt thanks for the safety and support they have received in Killarney.

"Our deepest gratitude to Kerry, especially to the Killarney community, for these 1,000 days of safety and the chance to live without fear," said Natalia Krasnenkova, NEWKD community worker and organiser of the event.

"Although the war in Ukraine no longer dominates world news, it remains a harsh daily reality for us. Ukraine and Ukrainians still need support.”

Currently, approximately 2,500 Ukrainians live in Killarney under temporary protection. Nearly half of them are employed, while others attend further education and language courses.

Ukrainians have also begun opening small businesses, including alteration shops and beauty salons.

The Ukrainian community actively participates in local parades, concerts, races,

and various cultural and sports events. Killarney hosts a Ukrainian school, a Ukrainian code choir and Out of frame show ballet.

As long as the war in Ukraine continues, Ukrainians cannot return home. Currently, 18% of Ukraine's territory remains under occupation. Russian missile, bomb, drone, and artillery strikes continue across the country, with no region entirely safe from attack.

Civilian casualties are severe, with the United Nations reporting over 11,743 deaths, including 613 children, and 24,614 injuries since February 24, 2022.

Additionally, 1,358 educational and 580 medical facilities have been damaged or destroyed according to a UN report.

The war continues to escalate, with Russian forces launching 2,023 missiles over Ukraine in October 2024 alone.

The extensive bombing has left 128,000 square kilometres of land- almost twice the size of Ireland - contaminated with explosive ordnance.

Andy to the forefront when it came to innovation

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has paid tribute to Andy O’Sullivan, a hugely popular local businessman who passed away on Wednesday following an illness.

The business representative organisation said he will be fondly remembered as a wonderful community man who always put the best interests of Killarney first and he was forever willing to put his shoulder to the wheel when it came to promoting and improving the town.

Andy was a long-time member of Chamber and he always had great suggestions on how the town could be progressed in the right direction.

“He was very much to the forefront when it came to innovation and Andy and his family have contributed enormously and steadfastly to the commercial life of the town,” the Chamber executive said.

Andy operated a busy business at Killarney Carpet and Furniture Centre on High Street and he furnished many homes, hotels, guesthouses and other businesses in Killarney and well beyond down through the years.

“He was a great neighbour to others in business, offering very useful advice to many and he was always willing and able to help others if the need arose,” the Chamber added.

The executive said while Andy’s cheery

disposition, friendliness and smile will be greatly missed, Killarney is lucky that his sons and daughters are very active in the business life of the town and, like their dad, they are very forward-thinking and progressive.

Andy was also a great and loyal supporter of the Killarney Tidy Towns organisation and his attractive business on High Street was a great example of how a commercial premises could and should be presented. He was a regular award winner in the Killarney Looking Good competition and Andy always led by example. His requiem Mass will take on Saturday morning at 10.30am in St Mary's Cathedral, followed by burial in Killaha Graveyard, Glenflesk.

Valley Rowing Club seeks winning crew photo

The Flesk Valley Rowing Club is on a mission to find a photo of their victorious Senior Sixes team from the Killarney Regatta, held 70 years ago at Castleross.

A recent discovery by club stalwart John Hegarty unearthed a rare photo of the club's winning Senior Four team from the same era.

This photo, showing Seamus Murphy (Oar Number 2), Miah O’Callaghan (trainer and cox), Seamus Lynch (Oar Number 4), and Danny O’Leary (Oar Number 3) alongside Tom O’Sullivan (Oar Number

5), serves as a valuable piece of club history.

However, the quest for a complete picture remains. Hegarty believes a photo of the triumphant Senior Six crew must exist and is calling upon readers of the Killarney Advertiser to help locate it. The additional members of the championship squad are believed to be Micheal Healy (Oar Number 6 ) and Paddy Doyle (Oar Number 1).

Anyone with a copy of the photo or information on its whereabouts is asked to contact the Killarney Advertiser at info@ killarneyadvertiser.ie

VINTAGE PRES FLAG MAKES A COMEBACK: A piece of school history has returned to St. Brigid’s Presentation this week. Two students, Lea and Ella O’Connell, brought in a vintage Pres flag that had been tucked away for 45 years. The flag was discovered by their aunt, Ita O’Connell, during a recent clear-out. It last flew proudly at a Pres basketball game on the 1980s. Now, it’s been dusted off and is ready to cheer on the next generation of Presentation students.

Local singer’s Christmas tune to fill shopping centres nationwide

Local singer-songwriter Mary Culloty O’Sullivan is set to bring a touch of festive cheer to shopping centres across Ireland this Christmas season.

Her self-penned song, ‘Christmas Bells’, has been selected for a Christmas playlist that will be played in popular shopping centres such as the Ilac Centre, Dundrum Town Centre, and Crescent Shopping Centre in Limerick.

In addition, O’Sullivan has recently been honoured with an award at the Red Carpet Awards in Europe. This international recognition acknowledges her significant contribution to the music industry.

To celebrate her success and give back to the community, O’Sullivan is organising a Christmas fundraiser on December 1, at 3pm in Listowel Community Centre. He special guests are the Killarney Community Singers, North Kerry Community Choir, Frances Kennedy (renowned storyteller) , Muiris O Laoire (poetry) Dolores Carroll (poetry) .

“A huge thank you to my Musical Director, Tony O'Flaherty, who has brought my songs to life and is an integral part of my success. He will also be accompanying myself and my singers at my forthcoming fundraiser,” she said. All proceeds from the event will benefit Asiam, the Autistic Charity.

Killarney adventurers conquer Ireland’s Four Peaks

A group of seven adventurous Killarney men recently embarked on a challenging three-day trek, conquering the highest peak in each of Ireland’s four provinces.

This gruelling feat was undertaken to raise funds for the invaluable work of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT). The intrepid hikers, Pat Sheehan, Paudie Dineen, Denis Reen, Rory Murphy, Niall Dennehy, Martin Maher, and Jer Maher, set off on Thursday, October 25, and returned home on Sunday evening.

Huge demand for affordable housing in Killarney area

Killarney Municipal District has seen a significant level of interest in its affordable housing scheme, as evidenced by the number of expressions of interest (EOIs) received for each property.

Since the launch of the Council’s online property portal, a total of 894 EOIs have been lodged for the various properties available in the Killarney area.

The most popular property, Pimpernel Court, a one-bed apartment, attracted 132 EOIs.

The data highlights the pressing need for affordable housing in the region and the Council’s commitment to addressing this issue.

The data was released at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting following a request by Cllr N. Kelleher.

Their journey took them to Lugnaquilla in Wicklow, Slieve Donard in Down, Mweelrea in Mayo, and finally, Carrauntoohil in Kerry.

To facilitate the expedition, Niall Dennehy, the trip organiser, drove a minibus provided by Kerry Coaches, who generously waived the fee and donated it to the KMRT.

The group’s efforts have raised over €1,500 for the KMRT, which relies on volunteers to provide essential search and rescue services in the region.

It follows a man who returns to his childhood home with a double-wide American fridge freezer, determined to impress his former neighbours after losing

everything in the 2008 economic crash. Carroll, who is a former student of St. Brigid's and the Michael Fassbender West End School of Acting, shared the screen with renowned actor Robert Sheehan.

‘Two Halves’ scores international recognition

A locally produced short film, ‘Two Halves,’ has gained international recognition, being selected for several prestigious film festivals.

Written and directed by Woodlawn resident Paddy Osborne, the film delves into the sensitive issue of referee abuse in sports.

The film has been chosen to compete at the Melbourne Lift-Off Film Festival, the Stockholm City Film Festival, and the prestigious Paladino d’Or Sports Film Festival in Italy. The Paladino d’Or is the longest-running sports film festival, celebrating its 44th year.

This follows selections at the Bleeding Pig Film Festival and the Finglas Film Festival in Dublin.

The film boasts a talented Killarney

crew, including Mikie Galvin as director of photography and editor, and Brian Bowler as producer.

Galvin, took up filmmaking two years ago. This is his first venture into short film making but he has already gained recognition for his work, including making car commercials for Ahern's Garage featuring David Clifford.

"I really enjoyed working with Paddy and Brian, and would love to do more," said Galvin. "The film was shot entirely on location in Killarney with Killarney Athletic FC’s grounds and Countess Road

featuring.” Osborne, a well-known local author, is often described as Killarney's answer to Roddy Doyle for his sports-themed novels and prose. His latest work, ‘Two Halves’, showcases his talent for storytelling and his ability to tackle sensitive social issues.

Meanwhile, the film’s production team ‘The Four Esquires’ present their annual series of short plays at Courtney’s Bar, Plunkett St, from November 26 to 28 with tickets now on sale via Eventbrite.

Down Syndrome Kerry benefits from Tour de Munster funding

Down Syndrome Kerry is one of the Munster-based charities that will benefit from funds raised during this year’s Tour de Munster charity cycle.

This funding will be used to support vital services and facilities for people with Down Syndrome in the county.

In total, the tour raised over €442,000 with some cyclists raising funds for other charities near and dear to their hearts, including West Cork Down Syndrome Support Group, West Cork Jesters and Enable Ireland.

Over 120 cyclists embarked on a challenging 600km journey through the six counties of Munster, raising funds for various charities, including DSI. The Tour de Munster has been a long-standing

supporter of DSI, and this year's event has made a significant impact on the lives of people with Down syndrome in Kerry.

Enda O’Brien of Down Syndrome Kerry said: “Thanks to the Tour de Munster, we can continue to provide essential services and supports for our members with Down syndrome in Kerry. We are incredibly grateful for the cyclists, volunteers, and the public who made this possible.”

The funds raised will help DSI Kerry to provide a range of services, including early intervention programs, educational support, and social activities.

New bus shelter for Glenflesk

A new bus stop and shelter are in the pipeline for the village of Glenflesk, following a call from local councillor, Maura Healy-Rae.

Cllr. Healy-Rae highlighted the urgent need for a proper bus stop, especially for those who rely on the Kerry-Cork Cancer bus. The current lack of adequate facilities leaves passengers exposed to the elements and without a suitable waiting area.

In response to the councillor's concerns, Kerry County Council confirmed that plans are underway to develop a Road

Calls for youth hub and retirement centre at Dereen

Local councillor Martin Grady has called on Killarney Municipal District to consider the Derreen Site (Phase 2) as a potential location for a Youth Hub and a venue for retirement groups such as the Women’s Shed.

Speaking at a recent council meeting, Cllr. Grady highlighted the lack of amenities for both young people and older adults in the town. “Some people may believe Killarney has it all, that’s not the case,” he said. “In terms of tourism we may have it all, but for our teens and senior citizens we are lacking amenities.”

Grady said there is a need for a safe space for young people to gather, particularly during the winter months. “Teens will tell you themselves the lack of amenities can lead to anti-social behaviour. They need a safe place to meet up, with facilities

like pool tables, snooker, and a bowling alley,” he told Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

He also highlighted the growing number of older adults in Killarney, citing census data that shows one in three residents is over 60.

“The Killarney Women’s Shed and Active Retirement Group need a purpose-built, permanent home to meet the needs of 160 women currently signed up,” he added.

Grady pointed out the challenges faced by these groups when renting spaces, such as limited access and the inconvenience of constantly setting up and dismantling equipment. He stressed the importance of a dedicated space for these groups to connect, engage in activities, and alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Safety Improvement Scheme for the area, which includes the provision of bus stops at Glenflesk. The council is also exploring the possibility of creating a Shared Mobility Hub at the location, allowing for park-and-ride and bus transfers.

The council is currently awaiting feedback from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) on the proposed concept design, which will incorporate either on-line or off-line bus stop facilities. Once TII approval is received, the council will proceed with the next steps in the project.

Delayed footpath project at Madam’s Hill

Councillor Brendan Cronin has expressed frustration over the lack of progress on a much-needed footpath connecting the new Madam’s Height housing development in Aghadoe to the existing footpath at the N22 junction in Cleeny.

During this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, Cllr. Cronin questioned the status of the project, highlighting the urgent need for the footpath to en-

sure pedestrian safety.

In response, the council stated that they have reached an agreement in principle with the current landowner for the acquisition of the necessary land. However, they are still actively seeking funding to initiate construction.

Residents of the area have been vocal about the need for a safe pedestrian route. The absence of a footpath has forced many to walk along the busy N22, posing a significant safety risk.

Healy-Rae campaign lorry better value than a bicycle shed

Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae has taken his campaign on the road in style with a larger-than-life mobile advertising unit, leaving opponents puzzled.

The lorry—emblazoned with Healy-Rae's face and a call to vote—has become a familiar sight on Kerry’s roads.

Taoiseach Simon Harris, who spotted the vehicle while driving between Killarney and Tralee recently , described it as

a “very large portacabin-type thing, with Deputy Healy-Rae's face emblazoned across it asking people to vote,” Harris said. “He is clearly ready for battle. The Deputy is clearly ready for battle.”

Healy-Rae quickly set the record straight, saying, “It’s just a lorry with a bit of Kerry spirit. And I’ll tell you this much, it didn’t cost €326,000, unlike some government projects I could mention. It’s better value than a bicycle shed—and we could fit more bicycles in here, too!”

Calls to use existing hospital for minor

injuries clinic

Local Councillor John O’Donoghue has called on the HSE to consider St. Columbanus’ or the District Hospital as potential locations for the new minor injuries clinic in Killarney.

Speaking at a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting, Cllr. O’Donoghue expressed his delight at the news that Killarney had been selected for a Minor Injuries Clinic. He highlighted the importance of this facility for the entire East and South Kerry region, as it will alleviate pressure on University Hospital Kerry.

O’Donoghue proposed that the HSE should consider the soon-to-be-vacated St. Columbanus’ or the District Hospital as ideal locations for the new clinic. He earmarked the suitability of the District Hospital in particular, stating that it is a well-maintained building with the potential to be repurposed as a minor injuries clinic.

The councillor expressed concerns about the potential neglect of these historic buildings. “My great fear is that these two magnificent buildings will suffer the same fate as St Finan’s and be allowed to fall into a state of disrepair,” he said.

Canal safety needed at Ross Castle

The funding, allocated across three strands, will support essential equipment purchases, training programs, and participation initiatives for 133 clubs throughout the county.

Kerry Fianna Fáil General Election candi-

date Michael Cahill expressed his delight at the announcement.

“This funding is crucial for the survival of these clubs and the volunteers who dedicate their time to them,” said Cahill. “It's a small token of appreciation for their hard work and dedication.”

The funding distribution reflects the diverse range of sports and activities available in the county, from traditional Gaelic games to modern sports like pickleball.

This canal creates the island of Ross, entering the Lower Lake on the eastern shore at Bunrower and on the western side, it flows under the centuries old Guards bridge, into the Bog Bay at Ross Castle," said Councillor Cahill.

Scrapping of Short Term Let bill a boost to tourism operators

Linda Gordon Kelleher, Fianna Fáil candidate for Kerry in the upcoming general election, has welcomed the scrapping of the Short Term Let bill.

Gordon Kelleher has said it would have been devastating to the local tourist industry.

“I am delighted to see this bill being shelved, as I believe it would have had a devastating impact on rural and coastal regions that rely on AirB&B for accommodation.

Gordon Kelleher stated that this decision would boost the southern tourism industry, saying such a bill could have had a detrimental impact on the sector.

“The Short-Term Lets are vital for Kerry’s local economy, with tourism strife all year round. This bill would have a detrimental impact here in Kerry, with many visitors and tourists spending money and contributing to our local economy.”

“These regions don’t have large hotels or guest houses, and this bill would have crippled them. We must continue to support this sector,” she said.

“I believe in supporting businesses and giving them a break as they face increased costs, and I welcome the news of the shelving on the Short Term Let bill which will be much of a relief to businesses in Kerry and in the southern region.”

Kerry library receives Fionán Lynch photograph

A significant addition has been made to the Kerry Library Archives with the donation of a framed photograph of renowned Kerry native and Irish revolutionary Fionán Lynch.

The photograph was presented by Lynch's grandnephew, Professor Tim Lynch, to County Librarian Tommy O'Connor.

The photograph, which features a bilingual account of Lynch's life, will be permanently displayed at Caherciveen Library.

Fionán Lynch, born in Caherciveen in 1899, was educated at Saint Brendan's College in Killarney, Rockwell College and Blackrock College.

He qualified as a teacher in Swansea, South Wales where he formed a branch of the Gaelic League and taught the Irish language there. On his return to Dublin in 1909 he trained as a primary school teacher and joined the Keating Branch of the Gaelic League. He was recruited into the Irish Republican Brotherhood, joined the Irish Volunteers and became captain of F company Battalion of the Dublin

Brigade. He was actively involved in the Easter Rising and was subsequently imprisoned a number of times.

In a varied career he was a Sinn Féin TD for South Kerry in 1918 and for Kerry-Limerick West in 1921. Fionán was involved in the Treaty negotiations and later became Minister for Education in the provisional government. Post Civil War he served in the national army and was later elected a Cumann na nGaedheal TD.

He was Minister for Fisheries from 192228 and Minister for Lands and Fisheries 1928 -1932. In 1931 he qualified as a barrister and served as Leas Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil until 1939. He retired from politics in 1944 to concentrate on his legal practice and was subsequently appointed Circuit Court judge in the northwest district, retiring from the bench in 1959. Lynch died suddenly at his home in Dublin on 3 June 1966.

Raheen NS launches all-weather sports field fundraising drive

Raheen National School have set out on an epic whole school community project to develop their own all-weather sports field.

This is a massive undertaking for this rural, East Kerry two teacher school of 33 pupils. While small in size it makes up for it in community spirit. At the initial meeting on the development of the school sports field over 30 people turned out representing families past, present and the broader community. On the night parents, staff and members of the broader school community pledged their support to taking on this project as a ‘meitheal’. In other words they are pooling their skills including project management, groundwork development, labour, finance, legal and social media. This project is spearheaded by Tony McCarthy, Chairman of the Parents Association as Project Manager.

Joan Mullane, Principal said: “The Raheen community has a strong history of volunteerism. In the 1950s this community built their own two-room technical college all on volunteer effort. At the time this was achieved by 34 men volunteering labour one day a week over a 6 week period. I have no doubt that this current

group can achieve a sports field for Raheen N.S. In 2024 they won the overall title in the Killarney St. Patricks Day parade for the school float. When they work together they can achieve anything”. To commence the project significant funds needs to be raised to pay for materials and resources such as sand, gravel, fuel and piping. This they hope to achieve though fundraising. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the initial fundraising goal of €35,000 by summer break 2025. Other fundraising events will take place throughout the year led by the Parents Association.

Eugene Bowler, long term member of the parents association, said: “We invite all those who believe in the power of community to support our efforts. We want this sports field to be our legacy. This sports field will be for the school children but with an external walking track we hope it will be a safe place for our older community members to walk off the road.”

New safety measures approved for N22 junction

Following concerns raised by local councillor, Cllr John O’Donoghue, at this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, additional safety measures are set to be implemented at the dangerous junction of the N22 Cork road and R569 towards Kilgarvan, known as Poulgorm Bridge.

Cllr. O’Donoghue called for further safety measures at the junction in light of yet

another serious accident.

In response to this call, Kerry County Council has secured funding approval from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to implement signage improvements, including additional advance warning and no overtaking signage. These improvements are scheduled to be completed in December 2024.

The council is also seeking further TII funding for additional road safety improvements at the junction in 2025.

HIQA finds shortcomings at Killarney IPAS Centre

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published a report on its inspection of Linden House, an International Protection Applicant centre in Killarney.

The inspection, which took place on June 5 and 6, found that while residents felt safe and supported, significant improvements were needed in governance, management, and quality control to fully

comply with national standards. While the centre was deemed generally clean and safe, residents expressed concerns about inadequate heating, a lack of fresh food in deliveries, and the high cost of non-food items.

HIQA’s report highlights the need for Linden House to address these issues and implement measures to improve the overall quality of care provided to residents.

Night of appreciation for town's volunteers

Dedicated volunteers who have played an active role in ensuring events ran smoothly in Killarney throughout the year have enjoyed a night on the town for their efforts.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce organised an appreciation night in The Laurels lounge to thank everybody who devoted their time and effort to various events in the community.

Those who gathered included Tidy Towns volunteers, Mountain Meitheal team members and those who gave of their time to act as stewards, drivers or safety marshals during the various festival parades and celebrations.

They were treated to an informal buffet and drinks and were praised for their contribution and the community spirit they have shown.

“Killarney simply wouldn’t be the success

it is without the volunteers,” declared Chamber Co-President Johnny McGuire.

“Whether they are grabbing the litter pickers and donning their protective gloves to help keep the streets clean or wearing hard hats and protective boots to lend their support to the rhododendron clearance work in the national park, they are all doing a tremendous job and we are very grateful to them,” he said.

The Mountain Meitheal team is back in action every Sunday and Tuesday morning while, in the weeks ahead, the festival volunteers will be kept busy with the Christmas in Killarney festival events.

Students welcome renowned furniture restorer

Students at Killarney Community College had a unique opportunity to learn about the rich history of Killarney's furniture-making heritage.

Renowned historian and restorer James Flynn visited the school to share his expertise and demonstrate traditional restoration techniques. Flynn's presentation highlighted the thriving furniture industry that once existed in the Gap of Dunloe region between 1825 and 1953. During this period, local craftsmen produced exquisite pieces of furniture using native woods like yew, oak, holly, sycamore, and the distinctive Arbutus tree, from which the furniture derives its name.

St.

The furniture was renowned for its intricate inlay and marquetry work, often featuring motifs of local landmarks such as Muckross Abbey, Muckross House, and Inisfallen. Flynn emphasised the importance of preserving this unique heritage and has dedicated himself to restoring and showcasing these historical pieces.

The students were captivated by Flynn's demonstration of traditional restoration techniques, gaining a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and artistry involved in creating these beautiful pieces. They also had the chance to ask questions about furniture design and restoration.

Brigid’s students Stand Up to homophobic bullying

Students at St. Brigid’s Secondary School have taken part in ‘Stand Up Awareness Week’, an annual campaign aimed at promoting inclusivity and combating homophobic, biphobic, and

transphobic bullying.

The campaign, initiated by ‘Belong To’, highlights the alarming statistic that nearly half of LGBT+ post-primary students in Ireland experience bullying.

To raise awareness and funds for ‘Belong To’, Ms. McKenna’s fifth-year Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme class organised a ‘Rainbow Sweet Sale’ on Friday, November 8. The sale was a huge success, with stu-

dents selling out within minutes. In addition to the sweet sale, students distributed leaflets and information about ‘Belong To’, a national organisation that supports LGBTQ+ young people in Ireland.

Donald Trump’s recent team selections spark controversy away Home

Donald Trump’s recent selections of Elon Musk, Matt Gaetz, and Pete Hegseth as members or advisors to his team have generated heated debates across political lines.

These high-profile figures are controversial not only because of their own public personas but also due to the political implications of their appointments. Each brings unique strengths and baggage, and their selection reveals a lot about Trump’s strategic vision and political ambitions.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is known for his innovative ideas, technological advances, and massive influence in the tech industry. Trump has praised Musk in the past, and his inclusion in Trump’s circle could be an attempt to appeal to tech-minded voters, job creation advocates, and libertarians who appreciate Musk’s unconventional approach to business.

Musk has garnered attention for his unpredictable and sometimes polarising Twitter posts, including controversial statements about free speech, COVID-19, and even public figures. Critics argue that Musk’s online behaviour demonstrates a lack of restraint that could be problematic if he wields influence in political decision-making. His recent involvement in geopolitics has raised eyebrows. For example, his comments on the Russia-Ukraine war and his discussions with foreign leaders have worried some officials who

believe he may overstep boundaries. With Musk’s controversial stances, his inclusion in Trump’s team could invite scrutiny regarding his influence on U.S. foreign policy.

Matt Gaetz, a Republican congressman from Florida, has been a staunch ally of Trump and a vocal supporter of his policies. Known for his hardline stance on issues such as immigration and his “America First” rhetoric, Gaetz resonates with Trump’s core base and could help solidify Trump’s appeal with far-right conservatives.

Gaetz has faced allegations of sex trafficking and underage relationships, though he denies these claims and has not been formally charged. Nevertheless, these allegations have damaged his reputation in mainstream media and among certain voter demographics, potentially making him a liability for Trump’s image.

He is notorious for his confrontational approach. His polarising style of politics is beloved by Trump’s most ardent supporters, yet it alienates centrists and moderates. Critics argue that Gaetz’s extremism could reinforce the perception of Trump’s team as too far-right.

Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host and Army veteran, has been an outspoken supporter of Trump, especially on issues related to military policy and veterans’ rights. Trump has historically maintained a close relationship with Fox News, where Hegseth frequently endorses Trump’s policies and ideological

views. His media expertise makes him a valuable spokesperson for Trump’s viewpoints.

Hegseth’s association with Fox News, a network often criticised for its proTrump bias, makes him a controversial pick for those who view the network as more aligned with ideology than objective journalism. Critics argue that his selection further deepens the merging of Trump’s political agenda with a specific media agenda, raising concerns about political objectivity and fairness.

Hegseth has sparked controversy for downplaying the importance of COVID-19 precautions and vaccines on his platform. His views have drawn backlash from public health advocates and some conservatives who feel his statements may have contributed to divisive discourse around pandemic measures.

While Hegseth’s military background lends him credibility, his views on military policy are sometimes seen as too hawkish. He has openly supported Trump’s aggressive stance on foreign policy, which some believe could lead to unnecessary conflicts. His selection might suggest Trump’s alignment with a more militaristic foreign policy stance, which concerns those wary of escalating global tensions.

Trump’s choices of Musk, Gaetz, and Hegseth send a clear signal about his approach: he values loyalty, boldness, and media influence, even if these figures come with significant public relations challenges.

Hippo-hop legend releases new song

A lovable pygmy hippo named Moo Deng from Thailand has taken the internet by storm with a catchy new song available in four languages to celebrate this baby animal sensation.

The 50-second song, titled “Moodeng Moodeng,” is available in Thai, English, Chinese, and Japanese and features playful lyrics like “Moo Deng Moo Deng, boing boing boing/ Mommy mommy, play with me.” Accompanied by a music video, the tune showcases clips of the young hippo bouncing, playing with her keeper, and spending time with her mother, Jona. Composed by Thai songwriter Mueanphet Ammara and released by GMM Music, one of Thailand’s largest music labels, the song has captured the hearts of Moo Deng’s fans worldwide. Her name, which means “bouncy pork” in Thai, perfectly captures her lively personality and spirited energy that fans adore. Since her debut on Facebook by the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri, Moo Deng has become a viral sensation, inspiring memes and even being featured by sports teams and businesses.

At just four months old, Moo Deng has already become a significant draw at the zoo, which is located about two hours from Bangkok. The zoo reports that daily visitor numbers have surged to between 3,000 and 5,000, and they now offer a variety of Moo Deng-themed merchandise, including clothing and bedding. Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoi noted that the increased revenue from Moo Deng’s popularity will support critical breeding programs, including those for endangered species like the pygmy hippopotamus, which faces threats from poaching and habitat loss in its native West Africa, where only about 2,0003,000 remain in the wild.

Unregistered doctor found treating patients

A person posing as a doctor and treating patients was reported to the Gardaí last year, according to the Medical Council’s annual report, revealed yesterday.

The report highlighted that this individual, who was not a licensed medical practitioner, had falsely presented themselves as a doctor.

The Council's investigations also identified several unregistered medical practitioners working in the country without proper credentials.

The Medical Council’s report noted that it conducted 32 investigations over the past year and assisted Gardaí with six distinct criminal cases. Under its authority,

the Council can investigate any person practicing or who has practiced medicine without appropriate registration.

Last year, 22 doctors faced disciplinary actions, with four removed from the register entirely.

The report documented a record 353 complaints received in the past year, the highest in five years. Of these, 61 cases were sent to the Council’s fitness-to-practice committee. Most complaints, numbering 273, came from the public, while 32 were initiated by the Medical Council, and 29 were raised by healthcare professionals. Communication issues, including those related to diagnosis and clinical investigation, were the most frequent source of complaints.

FF commit to decriminalise drug possession for personal use

Fianna Fáil reaffirmed this week its commitment to decriminalising drug possession for personal use, a stance outlined in its election manifesto.

This proposal, in line with recommendations from the Citizens' Assembly on Drugs Use advocating a health-centered approach, has drawn criticism from Fine Gael, which called the plan "astonishing."

While Fianna Fáil has not finalised specifics, it indicated the decriminalisation might exclude Class A substances like cocaine and heroin. The manifesto’s statement simply reads that the party would “decriminalise drug possession for personal use.”

In addition, Fianna Fáil has pledged to raise the State pension to €350 per week if elected, as part of its nearly 200-page manifesto, "Moving Forward

Man arrested and released in Jo Jo Dullard investigation

In a significant development in the nearly three-decade-old case of Jo Jo Dullard's disappearance, a 55-year-old man was arrested this week in County Kildare on suspicion of her murder. Dullard, then 21, vanished on November 9, 1995, after last being seen in Moone, County Kildare.

The suspect, described as coming from a "well-known family," had been a longstanding person of interest in the investigation.

Following his arrest, Gardaí conducted searches of two houses in County Kildare and a patch of open ground in County Wicklow. The area of land, located on the Wicklow/Kildare border, was subjected to excavation, technical, and forensic examinations. A seven-day temporary no-fly zone for unmanned drones was also declared over the search area by the Irish Aviation Authority. The man was later released without charge although it is understood a file is being prepared for the DPP. The investigation into Dullard's disappearance was upgraded to a murder investigation in 2020 following a reinvestigation by the Garda Serious Crime Review Team.

On the night of November 9, 1995, Jo Jo Dullard went missing while attempting

to hitchhike home. Jo Jo had been living in Dublin, where she worked as a waitress, but decided to return to her family. That evening, she missed the last bus home from Dublin, so she began hitchhiking, reaching the town of Moone, County Kildare, where she stopped to make a phone call to a friend from a public phone box around 11:37pm. During the call, she mentioned a car pulling up, telling her friend she would try to get a lift with them. This was the last known communication from her, as she failed to reach her intended destination. Despite extensive searches and public appeals for information, no solid leads emerged until now.

Together." Launched earlier today, the document promises support for families and businesses facing high costs, enhanced investment in healthcare and education, expanded housing efforts, and economic stability.

Among its welfare proposals, Fianna Fáil committed to raising core welfare rates by €12 annually and intends to continue lowering the cost of public services. For childcare, the party aims to cap fees at €200 monthly per child, potentially lowering this further if economic conditions allow. The health section of the manifesto includes expanding hospital beds, increasing consultants and GP numbers, and extending free GP cards to all children under 12. In housing, Fianna Fáil aims to build 60,000 homes per year starting in 2030, including 10,000 affordable homes annually, while also increasing support for first-time buyers through to 2030.

Gerry "The Monk" Hutch announces candidacy in upcoming Irish election

Gerry Hutch, widely known as “The Monk,” has announced his candidacy in the upcoming general election. Hutch, who has been a central figure in Dublin’s organised crime landscape for decades, has signalled his intention to run for office as an independent candidate.

In a video posted on X that showed him speaking to members of the media in

Dublin Airport, Mr Hutch said that he was "100%" going to "go for it". He refused to comment on his policies and when asked about whose seat was most at risk with him running, Mr Hutch said: "I don’t know, any seat will do me." Hutch, a well-known figure in Dublin, rose to prominence in the 1990s with a reputation as a highly effective and disciplined operator within Dublin's criminal underworld.

Killarney and District Motor Club (KDMC) is offering a unique opportunity for aspiring young co-drivers.

On Friday, November 22, at 7:30pm, a special evening will be held at Killarney Racecourse, featuring some of Kerry’s top co-drivers.

This event, organised by the KDMC2 Youth Programme, will provide aspiring

co-drivers with invaluable insights and advice from renowned co-drivers Paul Nagle, Mikie Galvin, Noel O’Sullivan, and Ger Conway, all members of the KDMC. These experienced professionals have represented the club at national, European, and international levels.

To register your interest, contact Laura Healy at 085 147 2086 or Mike O’Shea at 087 329 0071.

Killarney Historic Rally officially launched

The event, which is set to take place on November 29 and 30, promises to be bigger and better than ever.

"We're excited to welcome competitors from all over the world to Killarney," said Anthony O’Connor, Clerk of the Course. "The popularity of this event continues to grow, and we expect a strong field of entries."

The Killarney Towers Hotel returns as the main sponsor, while the KC Print continues its long-standing support of the event. Other key sponsors include Aherns Motor Group, Castrol, Traynor’s, and Keans Centra.

This year's rally will feature eight stages, including the iconic Molls Gap, Beallaghbeama, Caragh Lake, and Kilcummin. These stages will be run in both daylight and darkness, offering a thrilling challenge for competitors and spectators alike.

“Saturday morning starts with fast-flowing and iconic Molls Gap followed by Ballaughbeama and the classic Carragh Lake stage, then goes into service at Liebherr Container cranes Killarney. This Loop is repeated and into service again, before

heading out to take on Kilcummin in daylight, we head to a holding area in Farranfore before heading out to complete the final stage of Kilcummin in darkness,” explained O’Connor who also announced plans for a motorsport festival on the streets of Killarney town. The two-day event will begin with a ceremonial start on Friday evening, November 29th.

The top three crews from each class will arrive back in Killarney for the finish ramp at 7 pm outside the Killarney Plaza Hotel and Spa.

Gemma Ring, managing director of the O’Donoghue Ring Collection of Hotels said:

“I would like to thank all the Killarney and District Motor Club organisers for their hard work and dedication to bringing this event to Killarney.

“The rally showcases Killarney and picturesque surrounds to all who attend,

“With the festive season just around the corner, the rally followers create a great atmosphere around the town over the weekend.”

The town centre ceremonial starts on Friday (November 29) evening and will be the first opportunity for fans to engage with double World Rally Champion Kalle Rovanperä.

The Flying Finn is on his first visit to Kerry and will drive Jason Black’s Toyota Starlet in the modified category.

All eyes will be on defending Modified Rally champion Rob Duggan. Will it be the local hero or the World Champion who will come out on top in that battle?

But this rally is all about the Historic element and close to 80 genuine historic rally cars are set to take to the start line on Saturday morning.

This is a record for the rally and another step closer to Killarney and District Motor Club’s ambitions of hosting a full field of historic rally cars.

Leading the field away will be defending champion Jonny Greer in his Ford Sierra Cosworth.

He will be aiming for three in a row. Is there anyone out there able to stop his bid for three in a row?

His rivals include local driver Alan Ring

who will compete in his Subaru Legacy and he would dearly love to win the rally that his family business is sponsoring. Other contenders include former winners like Mark Falvey and Dennis Moynihan their Ford Escort Mk1S and recently crowned Irish Tarmac Historic Rally Champion Neil Williams in his Ford Escort Mark2.

There is a fleet of BMW M3 E 30s in the rally which is going to make a spectacular sight on the classic stages around Carragh Lake and Moll’s Gap.

These will be driven by Donagh Kelly who just pipped his fellow county man John O'Donnell in the recent Kerry Winter Rally for historic rally honours.

Donagh’s son Eamonn has put a late deal together to run a BMW as opposed to the advertised Ford Escort Mk2.

Other examples will be driven by local man Paul Ahern who is also one of the associate sponsors of the rally.

Michael Cullen returns in his example and a Kerry man Fergus O’Meara will debut his newly acquired E30.

O’Meara will be co-driven by current Irish Tarmac Rally Champion co-driver Mikie Galvin.

Other interesting include World Rally Championship co-driver Liam Regan who takes to the steering wheel for his annual visit to Killarney in his Skoda Estelle 130. Atlanta-based Donegal man Seamus Burke returns in his BDA-powered Ford Escort and Joe White flies in from San Fransisco to drive an Austin Mini.

1ST ANNIVERSARY O’SHEA

In loving memory of Katie O’Shea Lawhir, Glencar and late of Rathmore and Killarney 19th November 2023.

Our time together was special

So were the memories we made And although you live in Heaven now Those memories never fade.

We bow my head in silence

And remember our sister with love

And we know that you are up there

Watching from above.

Everyday’s a struggle

And nothing feels the same And our hearts break a little more

Everytime we hear your name.

You’ll always be remembered

And time may heal our hearts

But a piece of us is missing

Since the day we had to part.

If Heaven is for Angels

Then we know that’s where you’ll be And we know you will be waiting

When Heaven calls for us.

Always remembered and loved by all her sisters and brothers, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, and nieces.

FINAL FOUR

Glenflesk, Rathmore, Kilcummin and Dr Crokes set for East Kerry semi-final showdowns

The semi-finals of the prestigious O’Donoghue Cup take place this weekend in Killarney with four local rivals vying for East Kerry’s most coveted prize.

County champions Dr Crokes take a brief hiatus from their Munster adventure when they face Kilcummin on Saturday and the division’s two most eastern clubs, Glenflesk and Rathmore, go head-to-head on Sunday. Both games will be staged at the Fitzgerald Stadium.

The Crokes had a tough outing last weekend as they overcame the challenge of Castlehaven of Cork in the provincial quarter-final and with the semi-final fixed for next weekend, Pat O’Shea might decide to rest some star players tomorrow. They will still be fielding a strong team, however, and they will be expecting to handle the challenge of Kilcummin, although the men in green and red have some momentum following recent wins over Firies and Spa.

A brilliant first-half goal by Cian Foley teed up that 1-14 to 1-10 victory over Spa and their impressive spread of

scorers (nine in total) marks them out as a tricky assignment for any opponent. Dynamic half back Seán O’Leary, who was their Man of the Match last weekend, is a weapon on both sides of the ball.

As a senior outfit Rathmore will be favourites to get the better of Glenflesk in the other semi but the latter certainly caught the eye in last Saturday’s 2-16 to 1-14 win over Legion in Derreen.

Glenflesk looked to be in trouble when Legion opened up a five-point lead but two quickfire goals propelled them to their first O’Donoghue Cup semi-final since 2020.

Two of the Roches, Dylan (1-4) and Darragh (0-5), combined for 1-9 with exciting prospects Callum Cronin (10), Jamie Moynihan (0-2) and Tommy Bowler (0-2) also making their mark on the scoreboard.

Rathmore have been waiting in the last four since their 2-11 to 1-10 victory over Kenmare Shamrocks on October 25. Whether that three-week break leaves them well rested or a little rusty remains to be seen.

Fans rightly angered by yet another new Ireland jersey

Adam Moynihan explains why supporters are justifiably unhappy about the latest Irish soccer shirt

Ireland’s latest football shirt was released this week to widespread criticism from supporters, and it’s easy to understand why.

First of all the shirt itself, a predominantly white effort marketed as a “hype shirt” by manufacturers Castore, is supposedly inspired by Ireland’s victory over Italy at Giants Stadium at the 1994 World Cup. So it’s the wrong colour for a start. Ireland wore their green home shirt in that famous 1-0 win, with their white away shirt being used in their other three matches at the tournament. (The official blurb also incorrectly states that the match in question took place in New York. Giants Stadium is, of course, in New Jersey.)

The jersey, which is not expected to be worn in any games, is part of a concept range built around USA ’94, but it’s difficult to pinpoint anything particularly ‘nineties’ about the designs. They are all pretty modern-looking pieces and were it not for the year ‘1994’ being plastered all over them, it would be difficult to figure out what (if anything) they were

MERCH: One of the pieces from the new Castore range, apparently inspired by Ireland's victory over Italy in 1994.

referencing. Many fans are drawing unfavourable comparisons between the new Castore range and the cheap, off-brand Ireland soccer gear one might find in Dunnes or Penneys.

The fact that the jersey itself is priced at €95 for the regular version and €140 for the ‘pro fit’ version has added to the

Ireland have had 13 outfield jerseys since 2020, the same number as neighbours England and Scotland combined

backlash. Especially when the quality of Castore’s output has been far from perfect. The UK brand have been criticised in the past for supplying gear with upside-down logos, and this year Aston Villa ditched them for adidas over performance issues.

All of these factors are significant but per-

haps the most egregious part of all this is the alarming frequency with which the FAI are bringing out new shirts. Ireland have had 13 outfield jerseys since 2020, the same number as neighbours England (six) and Scotland (seven) combined. Wales and Northern Ireland have brought out six each – basically a new home and away jersey every two years. This appears to be more or less the norm for international sides across the board. It is also worth noting that the Irish team have been going through a terrible run of results during this timeframe. They have won just 13 games since 2020 (that’s a new jersey for every win) while failing to qualify for a major tournament in the process.

Sadly this pattern of foisting new kits upon us appears to be yet another example of a sporting organisation trying to take advantage of supporters’ fanaticism. Fans are not seen as loyal followers who deserve to be rewarded; on the contrary, they are seen as cash cows that are there to be milked at every given opportunity. You would think that the “new” FAI would be more conscious of how acts like this tarnish their already battered reputation. If they cared about fans they would strike a deal with a reputable kit supplier –someone like adidas or even Irish company O’Neills - and stick to a two-year cycle for shirts.

That would go some way towards repaying the unrequited support they’ve been getting from Irish soccer fans during what has been the worst period in the Association’s history.

Man of the Match Tony Brosnan hits 1-7 against Cork champs Castlehaven

Both of the Kerry representatives came through last weekend’s Munster Club Football Championship games and so moved one step closer to provincial glory.

It’s a whole new challenge for Firies and they got off to a terrific start in the Junior competition with a runaway 5-13 to 0-7 win over Fenor, the Waterford champions. The highlight of the day was the unbelievable score recorded by centre forward James Horgan, a whopping 4-8 (0-4f, 0-1 ‘45’). That must surely be a record.

Poor Fenor battled bravely until halftime and were happy enough that they were only five points adrift, 1-6 to 0-4. Was a comeback possible?

Not so as Firies took complete control with that scoring blitz. Hopes are high that the East Kerry side will qualify for the Munster final via a home semi-final versus Cappagh of Limerick on the weekend of November 23/24. Expect a big crowd at Farranfore for that one to cheer on the Boys in Blue. Kerry teams have dominated both the Munster and the All-Ireland Club Championships at junior and intermediate levels, with the added advantage arising out of the way clubs are structured and graded in this part of the world. As more than one GAA supporter said after Fossa won their All-Ireland Junior title: “How in the name of God can any junior club hope to beat a Kerry club at this level, with the two Clifford brothers, both AllStars, and David Footballer of the Year? How can they play junior when winning senior county championships in Kerry in the same year?”

Indeed, Kerry teams have won 19 of the last 20 Munster Junior titles.

CROKES TOO GOOD

Castlehaven of Cork had high hopes of retaining their Munster crown and also winning the All-Ireland which has eluded them on four occasions, but those hopes were dashed by Dr Crokes who were always in control. The final score was Dr Crokes 1-15 Castlehaven 1-8. Dr Crokes took full advantage of the home venue and always seemed to have the upperhand - even if Castlehaven were still very much in the game at halftime when they trailed by just a single point (0-6 to 0-5).

Pat O’Shea used the interval to great effect. He is reticent to speak to the media, as is his prerogative. After the game, I spoke with another member of his management team who is anything but reticent and first asked him if they were worried at any stage. His reply was swift and direct. Pat Spillane was noted for shooting from the hip with his com ments. This man shoots from both hips.

“No way. We had Tony. Man of the Match once again. 1-7. His usual. He’s brilliant and I’ll tell Jack (O’Connor) the same thing.”

Crokes really floored Castlehaven with telling scores in the third quarter when Brosnan scored from the penalty spot after Cian McMahon was about to pull the trigger close in. Gavin White was the big assister for this goal, making one of his trademark upfield surges through the Castlehaven defence and opening the way for McMahon and Brosnan. In fairness to the Munster champions, they battled bravely, but Crokes were in cruise control and they unleashed three of the oldies, Kieran O’Leary, Daithí Casey and John Payne, without weaken ing the side one bit.

As I expected, Damien Cahalane was unable to start after the first-half injury in the Cork county final, so he did not get onto the field until the 40th minute. He did rally them but when Castlehaven were down to 14 men after veteran Mark Hurley was given a straight red for a high tackle on McMahon in the 50th minute, it seemed like a stroll for Crokes.

Fair dues to the Cork side, they came back into contention when Cahalane blasted a powerful penalty past Shane Murphy and reduced the margin to just three points. Would they snatch a draw in those final moments with another five minutes added on for injury time? Not this time as the Crokes shut the door and tacked on four insurance points.

Crokes will be on the road for an away semi-final versus Rathcormack, the Wa terford champions. That game will be played at Fraher Field, Dungarvan on the weekend of November 23/24.

OBSERVATIONS

A winning club needs top-class perfor mances from its intercounty players and for Crokes, Tony Brosnan, Gavin White, Micheál Burns and Shane Murphy deliv ered the goods.

the Munster trail

However, goalkeeper Murphy was correctly penalised by the referee for delaying the kickouts. Quite correctly the ref brought the ball back for a throw-in on the 20-metre line, a very dangerous position for the defending team. Fortunately, Crokes’ midfielder Mark O’Shea used all of his basketball skills to outjump everyone, and the ball was cleared outfield. O’Shea had yet another

Crokes have so many players in their mid-30s, all playing well, but two of the young ones stole the show for me. Charlie Keating was superb, especially in that first half. He produced that awesome moment when he soared above everyone and with one hand caught the ball cleanly. It was amazing and it was no wonder the crowd gasped. Moments like these enthral spectators. He was withdrawn early in the second half to give him some rest in his recuperation from that injury in the Kerry semi-final. I wonder did Clubber sent that magical

The 19-year-old Maidchí Lynch was outstanding throughout and was very comfortable on the ball, coping very well with the Castlehaven attacks. He was also well able to turn defence into attack and scored a fine point. He was confident in his own shooting ability where a less confident young player would have released the ball to a more experienced

STAGING THE GAME

This game was the Munster Council’s gig even though staged by Dr Crokes. The club had prepared so well and the staging of the game drew wide plaudits from so many sources. The pitch was in exceptional shape although players

had to adapt to the slippery surface after the unexpected morning rain. All the organisational preparations by so many volunteers headed up by Karl McMahon and Maggie McAuliffe made it so pleasant for all.

The paid spectators numbered just under 4,000 and there must have been close to 5,000 in the grounds with extended teams, officials etc., and all the children were allowed in free. Overall, I felt referee Seán Lonergan did a good job. I agreed with most of his decisions, and I felt he got most of the calls correct. That, in itself, is commendable. Dr Crokes have 10 days to the Munster semi-final but first face a semi-final in the O’Donoghue Cup this weekend. They certainly won't put out a full team. We will have to wait and see how many of the starting 15 v Castlehaven will start tomorrow (Saturday) against Kilcummin, who defeated Spa last weekend.

In the other semi-final, Rathmore will play Glenflesk. The window of opportunity for the East Kerry Board to stage the O’Donoghue Cup, their premier competition, is just five weeks such is the default position with the so-called split season.

ATHLETIC SCRIBBLINGS

The new book Athletic Scribblings will be launched by former Kerry captain Jimmy Deenihan at Sherwood’s Bar, Farranfore this evening (Friday) at 7.30pm. Looking forward to reading about such immortals as Jim O’Shea, Mike O’Connor et al, who continue to thrive in Tír nan Óg.

Best of luck to Gillian O’Sullivan who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the National Athletics Awards in Santry on November 20. Well deserved. Maith thú, Gillian.

Behind every good man is a good wom-

an and now it gets even better. Ballina Stephenites men’s team engaged Cora Staunton as their coach/selector this year. They won the Mayo County Championship and bid for Connacht glory now that Corofin are out of the race.

I believe Cora must be the first lady to coach a successful men’s team at this level. How many times have I written in this column about the Mayo senior team’s bad luck in All-Irelands having not won Sam since 1951? None of that baloney about the curse on the team because they did not pay due respects to a funeral. They needed a scoring forward. Cora Staunton was the best around. If she had been chosen as a corner forward Mayo would have won several All-Irelands. Simply the best. Is it any wonder that she was also successful in Australia? Well done Stephenites on a bold but wise choice in an Ireland where misogyny still rears its head.

In-form Lakers looking for fourth straight win

Scotts Lakers will be looking to continue their sparkling early season form when they host Moycullen at the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre on Saturday. Tip-off is at 7.30pm. New coach Ron Howard has led his freshly assembled squad to five wins in their opening six league matches, a run of results that has them joint third in the Men’s National League Division One table. Their most recent victory came on the road against the Drogheda Wolves with local lad Eoin Carroll coming up clutch to seal a memorable 83-86 win.

The Lakers led by a single point in the closing seconds when star player Mikah Blackwell was sent to the free-throw line to ice the game, but the US import uncharacteristically missed both shots. Thankfully for the visitors, Carroll was on hand to grab the offensive rebound and when he was fouled he made no mistake from the stripe, draining both free shots to secure the W.

Carroll (20 points) and Blackwell (30) accounted for a half century between them with Darnell Snyers (14) and Shane Daly (13) also making their presence felt. Coach Howard was delighted with the manner of the victory, telling club PRO Enda Walshe that “this was a true testament to how we want to pride ourselves on the defensive end as our determination shone through”.

ON A ROLL: The Lakers have won three straight league games in a row.

“I am extremely proud of every single player, the way they stepped up,” the Californian said. “Mikah had an incredible game with 11 rebounds and Eoin had a standout performance. They made significant contributions when we really needed them. Darnell added vital points and 18-year-old Shane Daly was phenomenal with three big three-pointers.”

Elsewhere in Division One, the Killarney Cougars fell to a 102-79 defeat away to Ulster University despite a determined

Killarney claim 27 medals at Munster Judo Open

Members of Killarney Judo Club acquitted themselves brilliantly at the recent Munster Open, claiming no fewer than 27 medals between them.

The event, which was hosted by the Killarney club in conjunction with Cork City Judo Club, attracted 200 entries from all over Ireland and the United Kingdom. Over 600 fights were staged on the day under the watchful eye of tournament director Tim Kelly, with the help of volunteers from both host clubs.

Killarney had 27 members competing, all of whom displayed a range of spectacular throws throughout the day. Overall, Killarney won seven gold medals, eight silver and 12 bronze. It was a fantastic performance as the members gear up to the All-Ireland in Dublin next month. With an eye towards the future, it is hoped to make use of the Derreen Sports Project to potentially host the Munster Open once the building is completed.

Elsewhere, Utility Trust St Paul’s are back in Women’s Super League action this weekend after a three-week layoff. James Fleming’s side travel to the Kingfisher Gym to face the Galway Mystics on Sunday with the game tipping off at 12.30pm. The Mystics are currently winless so Paul’s will be hoping to secure a positive result to improve their record, which currently stands at 1-3.

MUNSTER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 1:15 Castlehaven 1:08. There was a fantastic club performance both on and off the pitch, when we welcomed Castlehaven to Dr. Crokes GAA Grounds on Sunday last. A special word of thanks to all of the volunteers who helped out on the day, and throughout the week to prepare for the occasion. With Charlie Keating winning the throw in, we started the livelier, leading 2 points to no score inside the opening 5 minutes. Much of the first half was very closely contested with both teams evenly matched, and swapping score throughout the half. We held a one-point lead going in at the break. The second half was all to play for. Just three minutes after the restart, Cian McMahon was fouled inside the small square and Man of the Match Tony Brosnan converted from the penalty spot. With momentum on our side, we worked well and kept our opposition scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the half. Shane Murphy then pulled off the save of the day to deny Castlehaven a goal of their own. They eventually got that goal they had been threatening, through a Damien Cahalane penalty in the 58th minute. With 5 injury time minutes played, we ran out comfortable 7-point winners. Fossa GAA

RESULT: Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Division 1 Final - Nagle Rice N.S. Milltown 2-09 Fossa N.S. 0-08. Commiserations and hard luck to our gallant Fossa National School team who lost out in the Division 1 Cumann na mBunscol Final. Three weeks ago, Fossa were crowned Urban 3 champions and Milltown claimed the Urban 2 crown, so last night it was the Battle of the Champions to decide the Div 1 winners in Kerry for 2024. Milltown are a formidable team backboned by the Milltown Castlemaine U13 team who went through the 2024 season in Kerry unbeaten in Div 1, so Fossa knew they would have to be at their very best to cause an upset. Before the game Fossa were dealt a severe body blow when they were forced to line out without their defensive pow-

erhouse David Kennelly who was ruled out due to illness. Played under lights in the famed Austin Stacks Park, Fossa started quite nervous and found it difficult to get to the pitch of the game as they played against a very strong wind in the opening period. The pitch was also covered in sand, and this certainly did not help the Fossa lads as they are used to playing the game at pace on a fast surface. In contrast the physically stronger Milltown team hit the ground running and quickly built up a 5-point lead. Fossa’s only score in the 1st half was a pointed free from the boot of Ryan Lynch. When the referee blew the short whistle Fossa would find themselves 11 points adrift of their opponents on a half time score of 1-09 to 0-01. But whatever the Fossa management team said to rally their troops at the break it certainly did the trick. Fossa emerged a transformed team after the break and went on to dominate the 2nd half. Driven on by their captain Aaron O’Sullivan and the ever-elusive Ryan Lynch, the shackles were now off, and the Fossa team played without fear, the hits were big, and the Fossa lads stood tall, laying siege on the Milltown goal for most of the half. Milltown were now in a game, and they knew it, Fossa’s ace marksman Ryan Lynch punished every discretion with his unerring free-taking, kicking 4 great frees to reduce the Milltown led to only 7 points. The game now ebbed and flowed, and the large Fossa supporters were on their feet, Tristan Cyan kicked a monster score to reduce the lead to 6. Then totally against the run of play, Milltown’s main talisman Fionan Burke cut through the Fossa rear guard and hit a rocket of a shot to the Fossa net. But, yet again the Fossa team raised their game and kicked 2 fantastic points from play from Mark O’Connor and Ryan Lynch to finish out the game on the front foot. Unfortunately for Fossa they could not get that elusive goal in the 2nd half, such a score would certainly have rattled Milltown, but alas it was not to be and when referee Paul Hayes blew his final whistle it was Milltown who emerged victorious on a score line of 2-09 to 0-08. The Fossa team died in their boots and left the pitch to a standing ovation. Huge credit to their 3 fantastic mentors, Mr. Russell, Mrs. Murphy and Mr. Kenny who have given hours of their time to this group of wonderful players over the last number of months to restore pride in the school jersey after many barren years. This group went toe to toe with the very best in Kerry over the last 2 months and just came up short against an excellent Milltown team on the night of champions. In both victory and in defeat this Fossa team carried themselves impeccably throughout the campaign. They will go back to their clubs much improved players and to their families as much better people, they formed a great bond and never say die attitude, this was character
