The Adare by-pass is welcome but not at the expense of Kerry While the advancement of the Adare by-pass is welcome news, it seems also that road funding for Kerry is overlooked once again. This week the government approved plans to advance the construction of the Adare Bypass in Co Limerick ahead of the Ryder Cup in 2027. This will provide a motorway upgrade to the N21 Limerick to Kerry route, as well as connecting the Port of Foynes to the motorway network Major golfing tournament aside, Adare badly needed to be by-passed and anyone who has ever travelled to Limerick and beyond, particularly in summer time, will tell you how much of a nuisance the traffic is there. Two things will now happen, once the road is completed, the traffic issues will transfer directly to Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale.

While there are long-term plans to bypass both these Limerick town, details were not included in this week’s announcement so nothing apart from location will change for the foreseeable. But what about our long-promised Farranfore to Killarney road scheme. Anyone who travels that section on daily basis will tell you it that is not fit for purpose. The revealing of the preferred route corridor for the construction of the new Killarney to Farranfore road has been delayed – again. Four potential routes for the N22 Farranfore-Killarney project were identified and were put out to public consultation in May 2021. These have now been whit-

tled down to just one. It was previously promised that the preferred route would be published late last year. This dragged on in to the Spring and there is still no sigh of the preferred route being revealed. A recent Kerry County Council meeting a council official explained that there are

further funding requirements to allow the council complete various reports and investigations required before the road can move to its next phase. It seems a major golf tournament can be a channel to providing funding, but access to the tourism capital of the country cannot.

No meeting with Minister Season to be jolly in as asylum seekers move in the Christmas capital There has been further public outcry in the town of Killarney after 70 International Protection Seekers were placed in accommodation on the Muckross Road.

The 70 males arrived on Wednesday afternoon and are now living in the Harmony Inn. Residents are up in arms over the move, as the asylum seekers arrived ahead of a promised meeting with the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth Roderic O'Gorman. Earlier in the week, Kerry TD Danny Healy Rae said he secured a meeting between the minister and local residents. “I am very pleased following my requests to Minister O’Gorman that he has been in contact with me to inform me that his team will meet with myself and members of the Killarney community regarding the placement of asylum seekers on the Muckross Road,” he said. “I am awaiting further clarification as to when and where this very important engagement will take place.” The meeting did not take place ahead of

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and Killarney will this year further enhance its fully deserved reputation as the most spectacular festive season town in the entire country.

Wednesday’s relocation of the International Protection Seekers to the Muckross Road hotel adding to the already growing public anger in the area. There has been several public meeting on the issue and a protest march in Killarney last Saturday. Former councillor Donal Grady vented his frustration in a social media post. “I had a man today who is being evicted from his home after 15 years. This is a disgrace. Our own come last again. “We have more than our share. Our name in Killarney Is going fast. No Infrastructure in place.” he posted.

Extra spectacular Christmas Magic street parades, magnificent street lights and decorations, a really unique Santa’s Grotto experience at a very special and magical location, sensational shopping and all the fun of the season of goodwill will ensure Ireland’s tidiest large town will also become the country’s Christmas capital for 2023. The incredible hour-long Christmas Magic parades, with Disney-style floats and characters and, of course, Santa Claus himself, will wind their way through the packed streets with the first parade and the switching on of the street lights by Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin, taking place this Saturday night, November 25. The parade will commence at 6.00pm from Lewis Road and it will pass through

College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street and High Street. Further parades are planned for December 2, 9 and 16 and what promises to be an emotion-charged and charming added attraction this year will be the gala festive Welcome Home Parade at 7.00pm on Friday, December 22 with a very special greeting lined up for those returning to Killarney for Christmas from wherever they are in the world. In addition, on December 23, there will be a special welcome home get-together in the newly opened Pig’s Lane which is located beneath the well-trodden streets of Killarney. There is no place quite like home, particularly at Christmastime, and everybody from Killarney knows that only too well. This colourful, feel-good celebration showcases Killarney in a truly magnificent light and the parades attract people from all over the country and beyond. If you haven’t been in Killarney for a Magic Parade at Christmas, you really don’t know what you’re missing.

Tree of light star to honour former Mayor of Killarney The feature star on the spectacular Tree of Light in Killarney will take on an extra special meaning this Christmas when it is dedicated to a man who did so much for the town and worked tirelessly as an ambassador for Killarney on a national stage The late Paul Coghlan will be remembered in a special way during the festive season with the giant star on the magnificent 100ft Californian Redwood tree in the grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral to be illuminated in his honour. The 1,000ft Tree of Light, which is adorned with over 3,500 energy efficient bulbs, will be officially switched on following the 6.15pm Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral next Tuesday, November 28, and it will create a magnificent focal point during the Christmas in Killarney celebrations. Parish Administrator, Fr Kieran O’Brien, said there will be a short prayer service at 6.45pm and everybody is welcome for the ceremony to switch on the lights and to offer prayers for the late Paul Coghlan. The Chairperson of the Christmas in Killarney Festival, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said Paul Coghlan was a larger-than-life character who contributed enormously, over a long period of time, to local business and political life and he always had the interests of Killarney to the forefront of his agenda. “I know he was particularly proud of

The late Paul Coghlan

the two terms he served as Mayor of Killarney and he represented the town and its people with great purpose and eloquence when he wore the chain of office,” Cllr Kelleher said. He described Paul Coghlan as a real driving force in the local business community and a long-time member of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce executive, serving as its President in 1980.

“Paul was great company and he was blessed with a great sense of humour. He is missed by so many people, not just here in Killarney but throughout the entire country, given that he was so widely known and respected,” Cllr Kelleher added. A statement issued by Chamber of Tourism and Commerce joint presidents, Pádraig Treacy and Johnny McGuire, said Paul Coghlan deserves to be recognised in a very special way by Killarney and its people given that he was involved in almost every facet of life in the town and his contribution was as enormous as it was valued. “He was a true and loyal supporter of the Killarney brand and took great pride in playing his part in ensuring the town was a great place to live and to visit. “His was a strong voice and he was a great advocate for the town and county along the corridors of power. “Paul spearheaded several projects that improved the town and its environs and

he played a significant role as a Trustee of Muckross House,” the statement from the Chamber statement read Paul Coghlan, who passed away last June, at the age of 79, had been a twotime Mayor of Killarney who served locally as a councillor and as President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. An auctioneer and an astute businessman who was always forward-thinking and energetic, Paul went on to make his mark in national politics and he was a long-serving member of Seanad Éireann from 1997 to 2020. At a local level, he served as a member of Killarney Urban District Council from 1985 to 1999 and on Kerry County Council from 1991 to 1999. Paul will also be remembered by many for his huge contribution to Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, as captain, director and as a playing member and he took every opportunity to showcase the wonderful local courses to visitors.

Killian Treacy, owner of Luna Coffee and Wine Bar and a spokesperson for the Killarney Coffee Cup Project said: “We met with some of Santa’s helpers this week ahead of this year’s Magic Parade, to tell them about the new single-use free initiative, and to remind them to tell Santa to bring his keep cup along for his post-parade hot chocolate. For anyone who does forget their cup at home, the deposit return scheme will continue to operate, meaning you can buy a reusable cup on the night, and once washed, return it for a full refund to any of the participating coffee shops the next day. The Irish Pilgrimage Trust is a group that brings children and young people with special needs on a week-long Pilgrimage holiday to Lourdes every Easter. Many of the schools applied for funding through the Wine and Art event as they

have projects they wish to complete on the school premises. Principal of Coolick National School, Gearóid O Sullivan said "We are delighted to be a beneficiary this year in the Killarney Rotary Club's annual Wine and Art night. The brothers were recognised for going above and beyond in order to care for their patient with chronic pain syndrome and arthritis. Dr David and Dr Declan Fuller distinguish themselves by offering a level of compassionate and understanding care that goes beyond the standard dental practice. In nominating, their patient said: “Their exceptional patience and flexibility in accommodating the patient's unique challenges, set them apart. In addition, their commitment to providing emergency care during the pandemic showcases a dedication to the well-being of their patients.” The patient, who battles chronic pain syndrome and arthritis, expressed gratitude for the exceptional care they received from the Fuller brothers and their team over the course of many years. “Despite facing the challenges of managing chronic pain and utilising crutches for mobility, the team's unwavering patience and understanding is greatly appreciated,” said the patient who did not want to be named. “There were instances when I had to cancel appointments on short notice due to the immense pain, the team always displayed remarkable compassion. During the pandemic, the team ensured I received the necessary emergency care that I needed.”

The four-person judging panel found that the dedication to maintaining the patient's oral health, showcased their commitment to going above and beyond standard expectations.

New species of moth recorded in Killarney National Park A new moth not previously recorded in Ireland was confirmed this week from Killarney National Park by amateur moth enthusiast Stephen Cotter. The moth is named Scoparia Ancipitella or 'Northern Grey and it is very small and is a light grey mottled colour: Perfect for camouflaging against tree trunks during the day. Stephen roams the quieter parts of the National Park at unearthly hours of the morning and night to catch a glimpse of these rare and beautiful species Speaking about his new recording, Stephen remarked, “People may not appreciate the incredible moth diversity we have in Ireland. We have over 1500 different species and new species are being recorded every year by a small but dedicated network of so called moth-ers!. Some of the new species recorded are related to weather and winds, some due to transportation of plants and foodstuffs, some like this moth are probably always present but in low numbers and simply not recognised.” The caterpillars of this moth feed on Lichens and mosses. “People think that caterpillars only eat leaves but in reality, they feed on a huge range of items including plants, mosses, fungi, rotting

leaves and wood; even the hides and feathers of dead creatures! Moths are in this way incredibly important in the recycling of nutrients. And, of course, everything wants to eat them, they can be thought of as the “plankton of the forest”, and in this way support a huge diversity of creatures.” Earlier this year, Stephen recorded a rare ‘White Prominent Leucodonta’ - thought to be extinct in Ireland. Stephen has recorded over 400 different species in Killarney National Park and Kerry County. The fact that enthusiasts and Conservation Rangers are still finding new species is a sign of the richness of our moth fauna. Killarney National Park is an astounding area of rich biodiversity and this is further evidence of that.

Christmas Hamper Appeal The Killarney Lions Club are organising its annual appeal for Christmas Hampers. On December 1 and 2 the club will we'll be holding a collection at Dunnes Stores in New St to collect money to fund the hampers. The support can also be done by donating some non-perishable foods to the Lions trolley in Dunnes . The club will also hold a further collection on December 15 at other outlets in Killarney. This year they are planning on distributing 100 hampers to some very deserving local families so all support will be very welcome.

The Heights Hotel Killarney is one of the first hotels in the country to be recognised as a ‘Knorr Recommended Roast 2024’ venue. And one of the first pubs is Kirby’s Brogue Inn, the landmark pub at the bottom of Rock Street. As two of Ireland’s top roast venues, both continuously produce delicious roast dishes and as such, have been awarded for the high standard of food served to customers. ‘Knorr Recommended Roast’ is a new programme that acknowledges pubs and hotels across the country who are passionate about food and consistently produce the highest quality roasts and carvery dishes. The Heights Hotel Killarney is no stranger to winning awards for the quality of its carvery offering, having previously won Great Carvery of the Year a few years ago.

Kirby’s Brogue Inn has also established a reputation for serving award-winning carvery over a number of years and has a loyal customer base who regularly visit the pub for the quality of its food, customer-service and value for money. “Ireland is globally renowned for the quality of our ingredients and how we use these in our cooking. At Knorr, we recognise the work and investment that venues around the country demonstrate in contributing to our reputation as a food destination. “Heights Hotel Killarney and the Brogue Inn in Tralee both have a long-standing reputation as top-quality food destinations and are worthy of being acknowledged as two of Ireland’s first ‘Knorr Recommended Roast’ venues”, said Jim Reeves, Unilever Food Solutions’ Customer Director for Ireland. Over the coming weeks and months, venues across the country will be mystery dined and, if the standard of their roast and carvery dishes meets and exceeds the standard, they will join both the Brogue and Killarney Heights as Knorr Recommended Roast venues.

Beaufort road improvement works currently underway Road improvement works are currently being carried out at Dun Buí Housing Estate at Cullenagh, Beaufort by Kerry County Council. Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill has thanked all involved for their patience and perseverance in getting this project over the line at long last. “A big thank you to Kerry County Council, its Senior Roads Engineer, Pádraig Teahan, and Area Engineer, John Sugrue who put in a lot of hard hours to bring this to fruition. I must also thank the res-

idents of Dun Buí for their patience over recent years, while arrangements were being put in place, such as the ‘Taking in Charge’ of the Estate in May 2020,” said Councillor Cahill. "On a personal level, I am delighted that the road in Dun Buí is being brought up to the highest standard. This is a beautiful estate in Beaufort and the residents had to put up with massive craters full of water for years and years and thankfully this has now come to an end. I am pleased that we have been able to assist the residents in this matter.” Maurz Taekwondo Club students from Killarney, Kilgarvan and Kenmare who recently graded in Killarney under Grand Master Michael Mho and Master Mercin. The youngest student is ten-year-old Alice O’Sullivan Bank from Fossa. Their Taekwondo Instructor, Maura O'Reilly, said she was extremely proud of all 12 students who have committed and trained hard over the years.

Killarney Crafty Ladies for Kerry Hospice Killarney Crafty Ladies are at it again this year raising funds for the Kerry Hospice. The Killarney Crafty Ladies were established in 2013 when a group of eight friends ( Betty Benson. Peg Coffey. Honor Doyle. Margaret McCarthy. Kate O’Connor. Brid O’Donoghue. Eilish O’Sullivan. Colette Sorensen ) came together to raise funds for Kerry Hospice Foundation and Palliative Care. The aim was to “rescue” Teddy Bears from Charity shops in Kerry, also Cork, Limerick and as far as Galway. The bears are then given a complete makeover. The Craft group meet once a month where they knit, sew, and treat the preloved bears to stylish new outfits

ready for sales at Halloween and Christmas. “The revamped Teddy Bears make the ideal birthday, christening or Christmas gift, ranging in price from €5 to €20. They will be for sale at Killarney Outlet Centre on three Saturdays in the run to Christmas [November 25], December 2 and December 9]. We raised €2,000 last year and to date over €25,000 has been raised for this very worthy cause and there is a donation box available at the Outlet Centre,” said Killarney Crafty Ladies founder Margaret McCarthy.

Randles Hotel Killarney shortlisted for Sustainable Energy awards Randles Hotel Killarney is delighted to announce that they were one of the shortlisted finalists at this year’s Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) small and medium business category award, which took place on November 16 in The Mansion House, Dublin. Set up twenty years ago, the SEAI Energy Awards recognise and reward excellence in all aspects of energy efficiency and renewable energy in Ireland. They also acknowledge businesses who demonstrate high levels of innovation and strong potential for replication, and those who have achieved significant energy demand reduction or clean energy deployment. This latest award follows on from Randles Hotel’s recent sustainability award they received in May this year, when they were awarded with the All-Ireland Business Foundation’s Solar Evolution Business All-Star Renewable Project of the year award, at the All-Ireland Business Summit. Speaking about being shortlisted as this year’s SEAI Sustainability Awards, Tom Randles said: “Randles Hotel is honoured to be shortlisted in the small to medium size business category for the prestigious SEAI 2023 award. We are delighted to

be recognised for the work that we have done to minimise our carbon footprint over the past twenty years. Our main goal is to deliver top-quality customer service to our valued clientele, while consciously achieving eco-friendly, sustainable, and effective energy solutions across all aspects of our business. We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Ballykilcavan Brewery, the winners of this year’s SEAI award, and we are privileged to have been nominated alongside them.” Since the onset of the Randles Hotel’s sustainability project in 2001, they have made huge strides in implementing their unique and effective reduced carbon

footprint and sustainability plan, and it is no mean feat that they are the first hotel in Ireland to roll out such an extensive carbon zero project on the Island of Ireland. They have also recently completed a series of positive sustainable initiatives via their sister hotel, the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney. Phase one of Randles Hotel’s sustainability plan was completed in May 2023. This includes innovative and effective developments, such as, the reduction of single use plastics, introducing eco-friendly motion sensory lighting throughout the hotel, the avoidance of food waste, the reduction of chemical usage, and minimising transport for in-house laundry.

Under the direction of Kerry based designer, Tim O’ Leary, the hotels most recent developments include, turning a Victorian building into a carbon-free hotel, via the addition of Solar PV panels, an air source heat pump, and air to water heat pump, and an overall energy monitor of the system. As a result, Randles Hotel have achieved energy savings of 28,294Kwh and 13,451kg C02 per year, which has all led to effective and progressive change. This pioneering work was carried out by DJ Walsh of Thermopro, Castleisland, Lukas Kadlik of MastertTherm, and Brigid Walsh of Solar Evolution, who advised and installed the Solar (PV) panels.

Sheep Mops for Killarney National Park An ingenious system to reduce the prevalence of ticks that carry Lyme disease in Killarney National Park has been put forward by Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill at this month's meeting of Kerry County Council. Councillor Cahill has proposed that the Minister for Agriculture urgently investigate the effectiveness of a scheme introduced in the Scottish Moors, whereby sheep, having been regularly dipped to eradicate the ticks that carry Lyme disease, were allowed graze there. "This would reduce the spread of these dangerous ticks to humans," he said. “These ‘Sheep Mops’ as they are known, could be used in Killarney National Park

as a method of preventing this horrible, debilitating disease. A man, who describes himself as a ‘Lyme Survivor’ recalled when there were 3,000 sheep in the National Park. I believe it could be a very simple, cost effective project to introduce and apparently it has been an amazing success on the Scottish Moors." “Dr John Lambert, who is an expert in the area of Lyme disease in Ireland, informed me that many GP's are not aware or informed of the symptoms of Lyme. He said that the HSE do not keep records of those affected in this country, in the United Kingdom, in Germany or any other known location. Dr Lambert said that the figure may be as high as 2,500 affected

every year but we don't know,” said the Rossbeigh based Councillor. “The figure is 70,000 in both Germany and France every year. Testing is not perfect and there is not a good understanding of it. Dr Lambert said that prevention and early intervention is critical. He said that wooden ‘Beware of Ticks’ signs should be erected in all Parks and areas where deer are present”, added Cahill. “Finally, I would like again to call on the HSE to introduce testing and treatment at University Hospital Kerry as the numbers of cases are continuing to rise in both Kerry and Cork and from what we know the figures are higher in the Southern part of Ireland than the rest of the country," he told the meeting.

"The Wizard of Oz" at the Community College Once upon a stage, in a land not far away, the pantomime "The Wizard of Oz" unfolded with whimsical display. Dorothy and Toto, off to Oz they did go, encountering a funny scarecrow, a tinman with no woe. With wicked witches and ruby slippers aglow, laughter and applause did surely grow. A magical journey that stole the show! After two sold out shows and a daytime performance for the local primary schools, the cast and crew of the Killarney Community College Production of The Wizard of Oz can finally take a bow. "As the curtain comes down we look back on a journey that started with au-

ditions as far back as September. The actors, dancers, musicians and chorus gave up numerous hours and weekends to perfect the performance they expertly brought to stage. Let's not forget and thank their amazing teachers who also gave up their time, precious energy and experience to the whole process. The cast will forever be grateful." said the college's Dympna Healy. "Two staff in particular we have to give

them a like, we have to give a huge thanks to Music Teacher Joanna Hughes and Maths Teacher Mike Lynch, for the yellow brick road would have been closed, and without their help Dorothy wouldn't have found her way home. “Thank to everyone you didn't see in the background who helped bring the whole thing together. You know who you are and we appreciate what you did. You made this Panto a dream come true. “Thank you to all our generous sponsors, production team and most importantly, thanks you to everyone who came to the show and purchased a ticket. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed putting it on.”

Over 450 people attended the Kerry Association London annual dinner dance at the Hilton Hotel in Wembley on Friday.

In a break from tradition the association did not name a Kerry London Person of the year. Instead the association honoured longtime member and well-known London-based South Kerry man Dan Tim O’Sullivan. The Gleesk native, who founded construction company Danny Sullivan and Sons in 1986 is also renowned for his charitable work. He received a lifetime achievement award at the event on Friday night. Other guests included the Irish ambas-

sador to the UK, Martin Fraser; Mayor of Kerry Cllr Jim Finucane; TV star Dáithí Ó Sé; and football legend Mikey Sheehy. London Rose Amy Gillen also attended. Funds were raised for six-year-old Jack Lynch. He is currently receiving treatment for Leukaemia at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, and his family has strong Kerry connections. The Association’s annual Mass will take place in Quex Road, Kilburn, on December 10, the same days as the seniors’ Christmas party.

Glenflesk Rambling House hailed a success

The Glenflesk Rambling House, held in memory of two local characters, was hailed a huge success.

Saturday’s celebration of local music and culture commemorated Johnny O’Brien and Dan Favier who both passed away this year. "A huge thank you to everyone, including our sponsors, who made last Saturday’s Rambling House in memory of Johnny and Dan such a brilliant night with the best of talent on display,” said

one of the organisers, Seamus Healy. “Thanks to all the people who worked so hard on the night and the days and weeks leading up to it, thanks to all the entertainers and supporters who turned out and made the night so magical. Johnny and Dan would be proud for sure. Looking forward to the next one already.”

Healthy eating this Christmas for heart patients and diabetics Heart patients and Diabetics who are concerned about what to eat this festive season will not want to miss nutritionist Paula Duggan’s upcoming talk. Organised by HeartBeat Killareny, the

event will take place at the Parish Centre, Park Road, on November 28. “Paula will be looking at the traditional Christmas food dishes and tweaking recipes to make them more heart-safe and healthy without reducing the flavours that we all know and love,” said Heart-

Mary O'Callaghan and Mary O'Sullivan busy dishing out the tea at the Glenflesk Rambling House last Saturday night. Photo Seamus Healy.

Beat chairman Billy O’Sullivan, “She will also be introducing us to some of her own wonderful recipes and her ideas on festive shopping, things to avoid and to look out for. Christmas is a time when it is easy to get careless about our diet. The evidence of this is clear in the extra numbers that end up in hospital at this time. Heart Patients and Diabetics need to take extra care and Paula can advise us how to do this by tweaking recipes.”

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Anticipation ahead of Patrick Kielty’s debut Toy Show The show — which is traditionally the most-watched TV show of the year, is an institution in itself and marks the start of the Christmas season for households across the country.

€87,500 Cocaine Seized in Listowel

While the children of the nation will be eagerly watching on to see the wide variety of toys on show, parents and adult viewers will be keeping a close and critical eye on presenter Patrick Kielty who took over from Ryan Turbidy this year. Turbidy made the Toy Show his own during his tenure, heading up fourteen editions of the programme between 2009 and 2022. While Kielty has admitted he his nervous ahead of tonight’s show many believe that the combination of having two young children himself, Milo (7), and James (5), as well as his background in comedy will ensure he will bring his own unique brand of humour and warmth to the Toy Show.

As part of Operation Tara, Gardaí seized approximately €87,500 Cocaine in Listowel Co. Kerry on Tuesday last. Members attached to Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit and Listowel Detective Unit conducted a stop and search of a vehicle in the Gortacrissane area. During the course of this search suspected cocaine with an estimated value of €87,500 was recovered. The drugs will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for further analysis. A man aged in his 30s has been arrested in connection with this seizure. He is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at a Garda Station in the Kerry Division. Investigations are ongoing.

Real hope Irish Citizen Emily Hand will be released Israel and Hamas agreed on Wednesday to a ceasefire in Gaza for at least four days, to let in aid and release at least 50 hostages captured by militants in exchange for at least 150 Palestinians jailed in Israel. The first truce in a brutal near sevenweek-old war, was reached after mediation with Qatar, who are reported to have played a major part in the brokered deal. It is hoped that temporary ceasefire could ease the suffering of Gaza's civilians and bring more Israeli hostages home. Under the current work-in-progress deal, Israel will be releasing 150 Palestin-

ian women and child prisoners. In addition, it is said that Israel might agree to prolong the temporary ceasefire to five days instead of four if Hamas releases 10 more hostages. Extending the cease-fire in exchange for more hostage releases could be an ongoing negotiation tactic to set all of the hostages free. The Irish Government is said to be pushing hard to ensure that nine-year-old Emily Hand will be among those to be let go. Mr Varadkar said the Irish-Israeli girl’s release was a “major priority” for the Government and it was doing “everything” it could to ensure that children are the first hostages to be released.

Altman's return comes just days after he was ousted from the position in a boardroom coup that sent shockwaves through the AI community. On November 17, OpenAI announced that co-founder and CEO Sam Altman has been dismissed. In a statement on its website, the board said it "no longer has confidence" in Altman's ability to lead OpenAI and that Mira Murati, the chief technology officer is to take over as interim CEO effective immediately. By Monday 20 November, tech giant Microsoft had announced that Altman will be joining the company along with OpenAI president Greg Brockman, who left in protest of his colleague getting the sack. In an attempt make the most of a bad situation for OpenAI, Microsoft also put a call out offering all OpenAI talent the opportunity to jump ship

with a promise of matching their previous employment terms. Later on the 20 November, OpenAI's chief scientist Ilya Sutskever who was involved in the original ousting of Altman posted his regret over the events on X, “I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we've built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company," Sutskever wrote. However, in a bizarre chain of events it was announced on Wednesday that Sam Altman will in fact return as CEO of OpenAI, overcoming an attempted boardroom coup that sent the company into chaos. Former president Greg Brockman, who also quit in protest of Altman’s firing also returned. Altman is widely respected for his technical expertise and his ability to attract top talent to OpenAI. He is also a strong advocate for the responsible development of AI, and he has been vocal about the need to ensure that AI benefits all of humanity.

Co. Meath Gardaí seize car after discovering hand drawn tax disc Gardaí from County Meath were on patrol when they made the peculiar discovery at the weekend. A driver whose tax disc was out of date by over 100 days, drew a fake one which they then displayed on their car. Gardaí seized the car after spotting a handdrawn tax disc on display in its window and say a prosecution will now follow. Ironically the hand drawn disc was out of date having “expired” in September.

Max Lawson, who co-authored the report said that while fighting the climate crisis is a shared challenge, not everyone is equally responsible and government policies must be tailored accordingly, "The richer you are, the easier it is to cut both your personal and your investment emissions," he said. "You don't need that

third car, or that fourth holiday, or you don't need to be invested in the cement industry." The study titled "Climate Equality: A Planet for the 99%", was based on research compiled by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and it looked at the emissions associated with different income groups up to the year 2019. It was published as world leaders prepare to meet for climate talks at the COP28 summit in Dubai later this month. Fears are growing that limiting long-term warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius could soon be impossible to achieve.

Tour de Munster 2023 raises €417k in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland The 2023 Tour de Munster charity cycle has raised €417,077.72 in aid of the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI). The grand total was revealed at a cheque presentation on November 17 which saw cyclists, supporters and DSI Munster branches come together to celebrate the achievements of this year’s Tour. Celebrating 23 years since its inception, the highly regarded Tour de Munster charity cycle has now raised over €5 million. This is the 14th successive year that DSI has been the main beneficiary of the charity cycle, with the Tour raising €4.4 million alone for Down Syndrome Ireland’s Munster branches.

In total, the tour raised over €442,000 with some cyclists raising funds for other charities near and dear to their hearts, including West Cork Down Syndrome Support Group, West Cork Jesters and Enable Ireland. The funds raised will continue to make a tremendous difference to the lives of people with Down syndrome in Munster, as well as their friends and families by providing vital services and facilities in each county which they so heavily rely on.

The 2023 charity cycle witnessed over 120 amateur cyclists embarking on a challenging 600km journey through the six counties of Munster from August 10 to the 13. These cyclists, with the support of their friends, family, and dedicated volunteers along the route, covered their own expenses to ensure that all the funds raised directly benefited DSI and the individual beneficiaries. Cycling legend Sean Kelly, a long-time supporter of Tour de Munster, once again joined the cycling group for the Tour, covering an average of 150 km per day through the picturesque towns and villages of Cork, Waterford, Tipperary, Lim-

erick, Clare, and Kerry – including a day in the Killarney hinterland. Paul Sheridan, the founder of Tour de Munster, said: "I am immensely proud of our cyclists this year for their unwavering dedication and extraordinary fundraising efforts. Thank you to the donors, whose generous donations will make a profound impact to DSI's Munster branches. We are immensely thankful to the numerous companies and individuals who have steadfastly supported the Tour over the past 23 years. I would also like to thank Munster Rugby who provided invaluable support and platforming for our cause through our official charity partnership.”

Rally School revs up excitement for 2023 Ahead of next weekend’s Towers Hotel and Leisure Centre Killarney Historic Rally, members of the organising committee visited primary schools in the areas that the rally will pass through.

A new route has been devised for the 2023 event, which will take in roads near Faha, Listry and Milltown on Saturday December 1. In the run-up to the event, clerk of the course Anthony O’Connor and local rally driver Dave Slattery visited Faha National School, Firies National School and Na-

gle-Rice National School in Milltown. The purpose of the visit was to introduce the sport of rallying to the pupils and also show both the children and teachers the modern safety features of a rally car. “We were very well received and the children and staff really enjoyed our presentations,” said Mr O’Connor. “It is a great way to bring our sport to a new audience and promote what we do as a club. Killarney and District Motor Club is very pro-active towards our future development and this is evident through our recently announced KDMC 2 Youth Programme.”

Insurance details of three million vehicles provided daily to the Gardaí The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) has begun providing motor insurance details to An Garda Síochána on a daily basis, starting from November 16. This follows the official signing of the data sharing agreement between the two organisations. Details for three million vehicles and five million drivers are being provided from the Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID) each day as part of the efforts to identify vehicles being driven illegally without insurance. These data sharing provisions were a key elements of the recently enacted Road Traffic and Roads Act (2023). An Garda Síochána will now receive comprehensive insurance records every night, providing a real time picture of the insurance details for every private vehicle in the country.

The data which An Garda Síochána will now have access to includes: Name and address of the insurance policy holder The insurance policy number and validity dates of that policy Insurance company that issues policy Vehicle registration number covered by the policy Named drivers included on the insurance policy and the class of driver covered (e.g., open driving policies) Date of birth of driver(s) So if a vehicle’s insurance was to lapse, law enforcement would have access to information providing that detail. The signing of this agreement and the

provision of the insurance data is the culmination of years of collaboration between the MIBI, An Garda Síochána as well as the Department of Transport, Insurance Ireland, the insurance industry and other stakeholders all aimed at reducing the number of uninsured vehicles being driven in Ireland. It is illegal to drive on Irish roads without valid motor insurance. Under Irish law, the penalties for vehicles found without valid insurance include An Garda Síochána having the power to seize the vehicle on the spot, as well as other significant penalties such as an automatic court appearance, five penalty points and a substantial fine. The number of vehicles covered in the insurance data updates to An Garda Síochána are expected to rise even further early next year when data relating

Tenants right to purchase It is being reported this week that Housing minister Darragh O’Brien is proposing new legislation which will oblige landlords who are intent on selling their property to offer their existing tenants first refusal to purchase the property on the basis of an independent property valuation. The proposed Residential Tenancies (Right to Purchase) Bill will give first option to sitting tenants to purchase the property if the Landlord is selling up. Under current rules, a landlord intent on selling a property with vacant possession must issue a termination notice on the tenants with an accompanying

statutory declaration confirming their intention to sell the dwelling. Under new proposed rules, once the termination notice is issued signalling the landlords intention to sell up, the landlord must invite the tenant to bd for the property. The tenant will have a period of 90 days in which to make 1 or more bids. After the 90-day period, the landlord is obliged to invite a further bid from the tenant if the sales price agreed with a third party on the open market “is lower than or equal to the tenant’s highest unsuccessful bid made during the initial 90-day period”. “The landlord would be required to give this further invitation to bid to the ten-

ant directly prior to agreeing the final sales price with the third party and the tenant would have 10 days within which to make the necessary further [matching] bid,” the draft legislation says. The proposed new rules would then oblige the landlord to accept such a further matching bid from the tenant. This proposed new legislation was first announced ahead of the lifting of the eviction ban in March this year. If the tenant is not in a position to buy and is at risk of being made homeless by the sale, the Bill allows for the relevant local authority (for tenants in receipt of social housing support) or the Housing Agency (for private tenants) buy the

rented property “to continue renting it to the sitting tenant”. The Bill has to go through pre-legislative scrutiny and be passed by both houses of Oireachtas, meaning it may not come into force for another year.

Sammy’s on Inch Beach up for sale

FOR SALE

Sammy’s Restaurant, Café & Shop Inch Beach, Anascaul, Co. Kerry, V92F348

Price: €1,600,000

When Sherry O’ Callaghan from Town and Country Real Estate got a call to throw her hat in the ring and represent the sellers to market and ultimately sell Sammy’s Restaurant, Café & Shop, she couldn’t help but break out her happy dance! In what she describes as a ‘remarkable property’, she is looking forward to doing what she does best: SELL! Having applied her trade back home in Canada for years, she is already experienced in selling commercial properties but this particular project has presented a boost to her budding real estate career in Kerry – and indeed Ireland! We caught up with Sherry this week to get her thoughts on a property that is already garnering interest. “Every time I think or talk about Sammy’s I get excited! It is the best opportunity I’ve come across since arriving here 2+ years ago. Sammy’s offers 3 business under one roof – the acclaimed Sammy’s Restaurant, the cosy Sammy’s Café and the convenient Sammy’s Shop. With a bit of imagination and some good work ethic what one could do here is truly limitless! The phrases "uncapped potential" and

Local Auctioneer: Sherry O' Callaghan

"boundless opportunity" come to mind. Sammy's wasn’t built yesterday! It was established in the 80’s. It has long been a favourite of locals in the area and visiting tourists alike (including bus tours). Sammy's was re-imagined & renovated to a high standard and re-launched in recent years and is seen as a tourist "hotspot" and the "place to go" to enjoy a memorable beachside experience. And rightly so! There are not too many ocean front restaurants around that sit directly ON the beach- a blue flag beach at that!

OVERVIEW • 3 story, double fronted property (nearly 4000 square feet ) • Sitting on c.0.31 hectares

So Sherry, Sell it to us… "The location of course has to be mentioned – a wild and windswept dune system stretches along this amazing sand spit as it reaches out into Dingle Bay towards the northern shores of the Iveragh Peninsula, creating a mesmerising panorama. Sammy's is located right in the thick of it and offers the most exciting opportunity to own a gorgeous, meticulously maintained & well-run oceanfront commercial property. Sammy’s is being sold as a going concern, it is fully fitted with just about everything you will need to keep these business' running smoothly." "This building is well thought out and well laid out. It has enjoyed many years of success and presents a rare and exciting opportunity for local investors and businesspeople."

• For further information or to view the property get in touch with Sherry with the contact details above.

O’Connor fires Milltown/Castlemaine to dramatic intermediate final win KERRY INTERMEDIATE CLUB FINAL _____________________________________________________________________________

Milltown/Castlemaine 0-18 | Fossa 2-13 AUSTIN STACK PARK A Man of the Match performance by sharpshooter Éanna O’Connor helped Milltown/Castlemaine to a memorable victory over Fossa in the Kerry Intermediate Club Championship final in Tralee on Sunday. O’Connor scored eight points including two remarkable long-range frees as the Mid Kerry club came from behind to secure promotion to senior football for the first time since 2016. The Dromid native, who landed in Milltown via Kildare where he played intercounty, was actually outscored on the day by the indefatigable David Clifford. The two-time Footballer of the Year racked up 0-12 in another incredible shooting display, but it wasn’t enough as he pushed a difficult free wide with one of the last acts of the game. As integral as O’Connor was, the impact of half forward Brendan Casey must also be highlighted; his two second half

goals proved to be crucial. The second of those strikes was teed up by the rampaging Cillian Burke, a player who looks set to be part of Jack O’Connor’s plans for 2024. On this performance, it’s easy to see why. Milltown now advance to the Munster semi-final against Cill na Martra in Cork on Sunday at 1.30pm. The result of last Sunday’s decider will have major implications for next year’s Kerry Senior Football Championship as the main pretenders to East Kerry’s throne, Mid Kerry, will now lose five starters – Burke and O’Connor included. Meanwhile, the Cliffords will be back in with East Kerry in 2024 and few would bet against them securing their fifth title in six years. Next up for Fossa is the O’Donoghue Cup. They will take on Legion on Sunday week (December 3) in Derreen.

Top honours for Kerry’s footballing superstars Kerry’s male and female footballers swept up nine All-Star awards between them as star forwards David Clifford and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh were named the country’s top players at a pair of gala events in Dublin last weekend. Clifford beat off competition from Dub-

lin’s Brian Fenton and Derry’s Brendan Rogers to claim his second consecutive Footballer of the Year award. The 24-year-old is the first player since Jack O’Shea in 1984/1985 to do so. It was a first Players’ Player of the Year award for Ní Mhuircheartaigh, who was Kerry’s top scorer this past season as

they reached another All-Ireland final. Fossa native Clifford was joined on the All-Star team by Tom O’Sullivan (Dingle), Paudie Clifford (Fossa) and Seánie O’Shea (Kenmare Shamrocks). It is Clifford’s fifth All-Star in just his sixth season as a Kerry footballer. Only Pat Spillane (nine), Colm Cooper (eight),

Mikey Sheehy (seven), Jack O’Shea and Ger Power (both six) have more All-Stars than Clifford. John Egan, John O’Keeffe, Páidí Ó Sé and Tomás Ó Sé also won five. O’Sullivan, Paudie Clifford and O’Shea each picked up their third All-Star award. The Kerry ladies were also well represented on their All-Star selection as Ní Mhuircheartaigh (Corca Dhuibhne), Niamh Carmody (Finuge/St Senan’s), Eilís Lynch, Cáit Lynch and Lorraine Scanlon (all Castleisland Desmonds) made the final cut. It was a fourth All-Star for Ní Mhuircheartaigh, a third for Cáit Lynch, a second for both Carmody and Scanlon, and a first for corner back Eilís Lynch.

The Dubliner who Eamonn Fitzgerald investigates the mysterious story of Jimmy Bermingham, a Dubliner who lined out for Kerry in the 1923 Munster football final I am pretty sure there are former players in all sports who never received the medal they deserved for playing on the winning team. It is very rare at intercounty level, though. This week we focus on Jimmy Bermingham who never got his Munster SFC medal despite playing at left corner forward for the whole game in Kerry’s 0-6 to 0-4 Munster final win over Tipperary one hundred years ago. The match was played in a downpour in Tralee on 14 October 1923. His grandsons Paul and Mossy are hoping the 100-year wait is over and that their application to the Munster Council to present a replica medal to them will succeed. That was the only GAA medal their grandfather ever won and the only football the Dub played was in Kerry. Hence it is so precious. Mossy and Paul are staunch GAA followers living beside Parnell Park, home of Dublin GAA. They attend all Dublin games and will be at Austin Stack Park, Tralee for the much-awaited Round 2

of the National league, most likely to be played on Saturday evening January 28. The clash of these great rivals under lights will be a certain full house. The chairman of the Kerry County Board supports the application, and so do I. Wouldn’t it be very appropriate for Patrick O’Sullivan to present a replica of their grandfather’s 1923 medal to Mossy and Paul at half-time in that game? Now it is over to the Munster Council, who must remember that above anything else Kerry football did most to heal the bitter Civil War wounds in this part of the country. Arch-political enemies such as Con Brosnan (pro-treaty) and John Joe Sheehy (anti-treaty) temporarily parked their political differences to unite and play for Kerry.

KERRY IN 1923

Quite rightly the council asked John O’Leary (Spa), former PRO of the Kerry County Board, to establish the bona fide of Jimmy Bermingham. John asked me

if I knew anything about a certain player named Bermingham who apparently played with Kerry in the 1923 Munster football final. The surname Bermingham seemed very unfamiliar, but I suggested to John that the year in question may be the vital clue. Naturally, he asked why. That was the year of the Civil War, and it was most bitter of all in Kerry. In fact, many prominent Kerry anti-treaty players were either on the run or in prison. I suggested that with a name such as Bermingham it was quite likely that he could be a member of the Free State Army (FAS, also known as the National Army). The fledging Free State sent 500 troops from Dublin aboard the Lady Wicklow ship which landed in Fenit on 2 August 1922, in what is termed ‘The Kerry Landing’. They had just one mission and that was to finally defeat the Kerry anti-treaty supporters of Éamon De Valera. The rest of the country acquiesced to the Free State, but not so the Munster Re-

public of Cork and Kerry. I knew that Dick Fitzgerald was a very close friend of Michael Collins after their sojourn together in Frongoch jail in Wales. On to 14 October 1923 in Tralee where Kerry defeated Tipperary in the Munster football final. On that same day that Jimmy Bermingham won his Munster medal in Tralee, a fellow National Army mate of his was killed near the town. Another was wounded but lived. Dick Fitzgerald, winner of five All-Irelands, and Small Jerh O’Leary were the key men selecting the 1923 Kerry team. The grained photograph I have of that 1923 Kerry team published in the Cork Examiner on 23 October 1923 makes it difficult enough to identify the players. Team captain Johnny O’Mahony wearing a cap is very clear in the front centre, while selectors Dick Fitzgerald, wearing his customary hat, and Small Jerh with the cap are very visible; it is difficult to identify others.

played for Kerry Could it be that in view of the ‘unavailability’ of so many regular Kerry players that they looked to the shipload of the FSA to bolster the Kerry team? Probability moved from possibility in my mind. Yes, a Dub may have been on the 1923 Kerry team. The lightbulb moment came when I recalled that Joe Joe Barrett wrote in his excellent book ’In the Name of the Game’ that a Dub played with Kerry in the 1923 team.

EVIDENCE

Those were my first responses, but evidence was needed. Sports journalists Joe O’Muircheartaigh (Kerry’s Eye) and Neil Cotter (The Irish Sun) were so helpful. The match report from the Nenagh Newspaper gave a brief account of the game where Kerry beat Tipperary in the 1923 Munster final 0-6 to 0-4 and left corner forward on the team list was a D. Bermingham (Dr Crokes). Other Killarney Dr Crokes players on the first 15 were Johnny O’Mahony captain and Dinso Hurley was the goalkeeper. Was D. Bermingham a brother of Jimmy Bermingham or someone playing under an assumed name - quite likely in view of the tense political situation in Kerry? Neil put me in contact with Paul and Mossy Bermingham. I spoke with them first asking them when they realised that their grandfather may have played for Kerry. They told me that Jimmy lived with them in Donnycarney. When the Kerry v Dublin rivalry took off in 1975, they were all part of Heffo’s Army, true Blues supporting the Dubs. Their grandfather Jimmy said: “Kerry is my team and I’m supporting them. I won a Munster medal with Kerry in my young days.” They wondered if he was doting, and that this Kerry idea was some farfetched fantasy. He explained that he had gone on “a cattle ship” with hundreds more from Dublin and that they embarked at Fenit. I asked Paul and Mossy if their grandfather mentioned men in charge on the army ship with names such as Emmet Dalton, Niall Harrington or Paddy O’Daly? “Only a man named Paddy. Yes, he mentioned Paddy.” That was enough of a clue. Paddy O’Daly, leader of Collins’ squad and now the ‘Dublin Guard’, was the most hated man in Kerry during the Civil War. Think of 1923 and the atrocities starting in Knocknagoshel on March 6 followed by swift reprisals at Ballyseedy, Countess Bridge in Killarney and Bahaghs (Cahersiveen). Paul and Mossy had set about research-

ing the life of their grandfather and showed me the replies from the Military Archives of the Irish Defence Forces. The record showed that Jimmy Bermingham (of the Dublin Guard) was based in Killarney, Killorglin and Collins Barracks, Cork. Also, from An t-Óglach, a Defence Forces publication, was a short report of a Kerry win over Waterford in the football game, two goals and eight points to three points, with this short summary: “Larkin and Birmingham were the pick of the Kerry fifteen”. That typo of ‘Birmingham’ was clarified when they received the military records in September. From microfilm data EPS Box number 4 of Enlisted Personnel Section, I noted: ‘James Bermingham, 16 Harmony Row, Great Brunswick Street, Dublin, 6th Regiment, enlistment number VR 498, age 18 years’. ’The 1911 Census for that area validates that. Listing father James (50), mother Margaret (35), children Michael (9), James Junior (Jimmy) (8), Patrick (4), Joseph (2) and baby Edward not yet 1 year old.

DONNYCARNEY

For those who know Dublin, Harmony Row was just off Pearse Street, close to town . These were tenements of course and the Dublin Corporation-built new houses for the innercity people. In the north side the hitherto green fields of Donnycarney became a suburb in the 1928-1933 rehousing programme. The only green part left was what is now Parnell Park, home of Dublin GAA. The Berminghams moved to Donnycarney and even with successive generations they all still live in Donnycarney,

right up to this day. Jimmy Bermingham’s army record shows that he joined the FSA on 14 July 1922 at the Curragh Camp. All ranks were paid two shillings and sixpence per day and where applicable allowances were paid to dependents (e.g. wife got 4 shillings per day). On the same day he enlisted as Reg no. 498 6th Battalion of Dublin Guards at City Hall Dublin. His vital stats were 5’7 tall, auburn hair, blue eyes. Weight 142 pounds (10 stone 2 pounds). Scars/marks: none. Character: V good. When he was examined in Killorglin on 28 January 1923 the signature was James Bermingham. He had six months duty done at that stage and ranked as Quarter Master Sergeant so his pay rose to 4 shillings and 3 pence per day. He had a scar on his left forehead when examined by Frank Carey Medical officer in Killorglin. He was ‘transferred for duty to Killarney and later went to Cork. He was discharged 18 February 1924. Duration of service: 1 year and 220 days. His medical history shows that he was declared fit by Overseer C. O Connell at Killarney, Kerry Company. Health was very good when examined in Killarney on 30 November 1923, aged 20. In the half yearly character assessment his conduct was “very good”. Paul said his grandfather returned to his 6th Regiment Dublin Guard in Dublin after army service in Kerry and Cork. He married Elizabeth O’Hara, a native of Ballinasloe. “Unfortunately, my grandfather had only one son, Maurice (our Da), who married Bernadette, my mother.”

75

Bernadette is still as alert as ever living in Donnycarney. Heading into her 90th birthday, she ensured that all the dates for this article are correct. She recalls Jimmy often mentioning Paddy O’Daly. Maurice died in 2013. Even on his death bed he said he regretted that he had not followed up on what his father Jimmy’s life story, including playing for Kerry, and several very successful soccer clubs including Bohs, as well as Ireland in soccer. That prompted Mossy and Paul to trace the amazing sporting life of their grandfather. Key points were clarified. Did he talk about the Civil war and his time with the Dublin Guard in Kerry? “No, not really. He said very little about it or about his time with Dublin Guard in the National Army, except that he made good friends there and made good friends in Kerry.” Those involved in the Civil War here in Kerry rarely mentioned that awful year, 1923. “It was the same with our two grandfathers. One was anti-treaty and the other was pro-treaty. When we had the Christmas dinner together my mother warned our grandfathers: ‘Now yous two, there is to be no mention of the Civil War or of Dev and Collins to spoil the peace of Christmas day dinner for all of us, including the young childer’.”

SOCCER

From the tenements of Harmony Row, Mossy and Paul discovered that their grandfather played soccer on the streets in the Dublin Central area and showed great promise as a 15-year-old with famous teams such as The Wasps, Dolphins and Brooklynn, which was the big underage soccer nursery of the time. This is where the English scouts came to sign up young Irish players. What was a young sports-mad 20-yearold do after his return from Kerry only play soccer at the barracks? After his honourable discharge in 1924, he played with different teams including the highly successful Dolphins and ‘The Gypsies’ (Bohemians). Jimmy went on to have an extraordinary sporting career winning every competition possible with Dolphins and Bohs at that time including leagues, cups, a European competition, and he was also capped three times for Ireland. He was an amateur of course and worked as a wire weaver with Smith & Pearson until he retired in 1973. This amazing story will be continued next week, dealing with the similarities between football wizards Jimmy Bermingham and Gooch Cooper

Kerry Schoolboys/Girls League KERRY V CORK U16: Cork U16 emerged victorious in a compelling clash against Kerry U16 with a commanding 3-0 win. The game showcased a clear division into two distinct halves, each offering its own set of fortunes for both teams. The first half witnessed Cork capitalizing on two set-piece opportunities, securing the lead through two tune-outs from corners. A stroke of unfortunate luck for Kerry added to their woes, with an own goal off a deflected ball across the box leaving them trailing 3-0 by halftime. However, the dynamics shifted significantly in the second half. Despite Kerry's tactical adjustments, luck favoured Cork's defence, denying Kerry's efforts to convert three or four promising opportunities into goals. Kerry notably dominated possession and displayed superior ball control, but struggled to convert their dominance into goals, failing to tighten the grip in the final third. The game unfolded as a tale of contrasting fortunes, with Cork seizing the advantage in the first half through strategic plays, while Kerry showcased a commendable performance in the second half, showcasing their prowess on the ball but unable to translate it into tangible goals. The match concluded with Cork U16 claiming a well-deserved victory, while Kerry U16 demonstrated resilience and determination, despite the scoreline not reflecting their second-half dominance. SFAI U15 INTERLEAGUE: Cork 2-1 Kerry. Kerry came out the wrong side of an excellent game of football played in Carrigaline. A last-minute winner saw Cork take the spoils after both teams battled hard throughout the 70 mins. The first half finished nil all, with goal mouth action at both ends, Kerry coming closest to opening the scoring when a free-flowing break saw a shot come back off the post and run agonisingly across the line and cleared to safety by the Cork defender. The second half continued in the same vein with action at both ends, Kerry hitting the crossbar with a fantastic strike from outside the box. With 15 mins to go, Cork took the lead. Kerry to their credit never dropped their heads and were rewarded with 10 mins to go, when Danny Kingston unleashed an unstopped shot from outside the box into the top corner. The last 10 mins both teams had their moments and just when both teams thought the game was going to end level, the ball broke to the Cork striker to unleash an unstoppable shot into the net to break Kerry hearts with nearly the last kick of the game. A tough end to the game, but plenty more days to get back on track in our group. U14 INTERLEAGUE: Kerry 1 Cork 4. In their second SFAI ETP U14 Boys Inter League clash, Kerry faced Cork at Mas-

tergeeha FC on Sunday. The first half was evenly contested, with Killarney Celtic's Kiernan Kelly impressive in attack while Listowel Celtic's Liam O'Flaherty and Adam Moynihan of Killarney Athletic looked solid in a newly formed Centre Back partnership. Kerry's good work was undone when Cork took the lead just before half-time with a near-post corner, that could have been cleared, poked into the home side's net from close range. The introduction of Lúc MacGearailt of Dingle Bay Rovers and St Brendan's Park's Ryan O'Flaherty into midfield, sparked an impressive spell for Kerry after the restart. However, a combination of mistakes and genuine misfortune allowed Cork to score two goals in quick succession. Danny Lane of Tralee Dynamos capped a Player of the Match performance with a brilliant goal to bring Kerry back into contention. Both sides continued to create chances before Cork took advantage of another lapse in concentration to add a fourth shortly before the final whistle. Kerry might take some satisfaction with an improvement in general play but the scoreline shows there is still plenty of work to be done in minimising the type of unforced errors that determined the result.

Killarney Legion GAA O’DONOGHUE CUP: A routine win for our Senior Men as they accounted for a disappointing Listry challenge last Saturday afternoon in Direen. Fast out of the block they racked up eight points to no reply in the first quarter and a Thomas Moriarty goal put the gloss on 1-14 to 0-1 half time lead. James O’Donoghue struck for two early goals in the second half while William Shine kicked three points when introduced in the final quarter. The win sets up a quarter final clash with Fossa in Direen on Sunday December 3rd with a 2pm throw in. Final score Killarney Legion 3-22 Listry 0-4. Team: Brian Kelly, Peter O’Sullivan, Danny Sheahan, Rob Leen, Cian Gammell, Jonathon Lyne, Thomas Moriarty (1-0), Padraig Lucey, Jamie Alade, Finbarr Murphy (0-5), Peter McCarthy (0-1), Eoghan O’Sullivan (0-3), James O’Donoghue (2-3), Jamie O'Sullivan (0-2), David O’Sullivan (0-4). Subs: Podge O'Connor for Thomas Moriarty, Darragh Fleming for Rob Leen, Shaun Keane (0-1) for Jonathon Lyne, Mark Heffernan for James O’Donoghue, Will Shine (0-3) for Eoghan O’Sullivan. LADIES AGM: The Ladies Department of the club held its AGM on Friday night last. Chairman Ted Healy gave a comprehensive rundown of the affairs for the year highlighting the good playing numbers in the younger age groups while also stating that a watchful eye will have to be kept on the older groups as we tackle player fall out. Tributes were paid to all the ladies players who represented the club at both divisional board and inter county level. The year was deemed successful on the playing front but a s always the hun-

ger for more should be present. Ted paid tribute to two outgoing officers who had stepped down. Oonagh Moynihan was a most conscientious Ladies Secretary who advanced the role no end, always lending great assistance to the chairman. Mike Doody was a very able wingman as Vice chairman of the branch, combining that role with his coaching and mentoring roles. Now the club is fortunate to have found two people to step up to replace Mike and Oonagh. Claire Duke will take up the secretary job, falling into her first role within the club while the familiar and reliable Shaun O’Connor is now tasked as the vice chair. John Foran (Treasurer), Fiona Ni Chonchubhair (Registrar), Enda Walshe (PRO) and Linda O'Donoghue (Childrens Officer) have all remained in their various roles. Also great to see Mike Hanrahan back in the fold as the delegate to the Ladies County Board. THOMAS MORIARTY: We would like to wish Thomas Moriarty as he heads down under this week for a spell. Thomas has been a mainstay of our Senior panel for the last 13 years and he will certainly be missed. Also a belated bon voyage to Luke O’Donoghue, who departed our shores a few weeks back. CLUB MASS: We will be holding our annual Club Mass this Friday November 24th at 7.30pm in the Clubhouse. All members are urged to attend. CLUB AGM: The Club's Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday, December 4th, at 8pm, venue to be confirmed in the com8ng week. The close of nominations and motions will pass on Monday November 20th. MOTHERS AND OTHERS: Our ever-active Mothers & Others gang are starting a Social Walking Group on Tuesdays, commencing this Tuesday 21st November at 7pm sharp. The initial walk will be from the Gleneagle Hotel to the Killarney Cathedral and back, a trek of approx. 5km. The route will change weekly. The hope is that in the New Year to bring this on to a starter running group for those who wish to. This is open to Killarney Legion GAA Club associates that are not with Killarney Mothers and Others Legion and would like to join us. Only two little rules.1. Overs 18s only and 2. No pets. ALL STARS: Well done to the four Kerry players who picked up Football All Star awards at the weekend. The selection of the dynamic Clifford brothers, David and Paudie couldn't be disputed, and they were joined by Seánie O’Shea and Dingle defender Tom O’Sullivan. David also was a most worthy recipient of the Footballer of the Year, a gong picked up by our own James O’Donoghue in a mercurial 2014. BABY JOY: Congratulations to Jonathan Lyne and his good wife Adrienne on the birth of their new baby girl, Zoe. Glad to report all doing very well! LOTTO: Monday 13th November. Numbers were 8, 10, 11, 12 Bonus No 1. No Jackpot winner. Match 3s/Lucky Dips. Mike Pigott Online. Maria O’Sullivan On-

Dr Crokes GAA O'DONOGHUE CUP: Dr. Crokes 0:18 Glenflesk 1:09. We welcomed Glenflesk to Lewis Road this evening where we ran out 6-point winners, in a closely contested game. The result could have gone either way, up until half time. From the throw in, we got our first score of the game through a Tom Doyle point from play. Both teams played a very deference first half with most of the scores coming from frees. 8 of the 12 first half scores came from placed balls. Glenflesk were awarded a penalty in the 8th minute with Darragh Roche slotting the ball passed Shane Murphy in the Crokes goal. Half time 0:06 to 1:05. Tony Brosnan was introduced in the second half and proved to the difference between the two teams, adding 4 points to his name. It was a lively start for both teams and Shane Murphy was forced to make a great save after just 2 minutes.
