PAGESIX Minsiter for Health Stephen Donnelly this week announced a public consultation has been launched to help shape future regulation of tabacco and nicotine products such as vapes. Topics up for discussion will include the possibility of price increases and putting further restrictions on advertising. Speaking to the media this week Minister Donnelly commented: “This consultation will help us make effective decisions to protect our children from an addictive product, while reducing the extreme harm caused by smoking. “While I understand that e-cigarettes are used by many adults who are trying to quit smoking, I am deeply concerned by the rise in popularity of vaping among young people. These products clearly appeal to children and young people, and we do not yet know the long-term health impacts of their use.” The announcement comes the same week that students in St Brigid’s Secondary School in Killarney released an insightful study on the matter, with student surveys and focus groups providing valuable information for teachers, parents and the students themselves. Principal Ms. Roisin Moore, who led the project, noted that school communities across Kerry have noticed significant numbers of students vaping and so the schools LCA class recently undertook

St Brigid’s students carry out insightful vape study some research with students regarding vaping. In a follow- up survey completed by 286 students 66% of students indicated that vaping was a significant issue in the school. 88% indicated that students vape more frequently outside of school than in school. 74% indicated that vaping takes place from time to time in school and 4% indicated that it takes place at every break time.

FOCUS GROUP

Following on from this survey Ms. Moore conducted a focus group with Transition Year students. The group were incredibly honest and taught her a great deal about the vaping culture amongst students. Much of what follows is information gathered from the focus group. The focus group advised that a disposable vape usually costs between €8 - €12 The rechargeable vapes cost approximately €30 and the liquid costs between €5-€10. The most popular brands are Elf Bars and Lost Mary. The focus group reported that girls tend to purchase the

disposable vapes and that boys tend to purchase the rechargeable and refillable ones. The students reported experiencing no challenges in purchasing vapes in shops locally. Unfortunately, unlike cigarettes, shops and other retailers are permitted to sell vaping items to young people under the age of 18. Vapes can come in different forms, shapes and sizes. Some common styles of vapes include ones which look like a thick pen or highlighter pen, a USB stick or even cosmetics. These devices are usually very small and can be concealed on a person or blend in with normal school equipment, consequently they can be easily mistaken or missed. Most vaping amongst girls is done socially with friends and according to the focus group it is less common for girls to vape in public on their own. They reported that boys seem to be braver about this. Exposure to nicotine and other chemicals

in vapes can have

LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES

Impacting memory, attention, and learning. There have also been reports of young people becoming unwell and needing immediate medical attention after using vapes. Furthermore, there have been incidents of young people experimenting with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) vaping. THC is the psychoactive compound in cannabis. “We know from our engagement with students that a small number of the girls have developed an addiction to nicotine and that these students may see the use of a vape as being a safer alternative to cigarettes. The purpose of this research was to provide parents with helpful resources as well as to alert them to the potential consequences should their child be found to be in possession or use of electronic cigarettes/vapes in school” said Ms. Moore.

Killarney Town’s Pulse Colin Grady with Shane MacGowan in Kilarney town centre in the mid 1990s.

The Killarney man who worked for Shane MacGowan A Killarney man has recalled how he once got a job working as security for Shane MacGowan. The Pogues frontman passed away on Thursday after a long illness. He played several gigs in Killarney, including once at the INEC and a memorable gig with his second band The Popes in Mustang Sally’s in the mid 1990s. Ardshanavooly man Colin Grady was the security on the door of Mustang Sally’s that night. The story goes that Colin was so good

at his job McGowan invited him to act as his security man for later concerts at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre. “He was brilliant to work for,” Colin told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was a very intelligent man. He was very good to the Irish community in London too, he kept them together with concerts during the height of The Troubles.”

Fill in our 2 minute online survey and be in with a chance to win One4All Gift Vouchers before Christmas The Killarney Advertiser are inviting you to participate in a brief survey to gauge locals current perceptions and expectations as a consumer in our community. Your insights are important in helping us understand the factors affecting purchasing decisions, spending patterns, and overall economic outlook for the town. This survey is designed to gather valuable information about local sentiment, including your assessment of the current economic climate, your expectations for the future, views on how the government are tackling certain issues and your confidence in making various purchases. Completing the survey will take approximately 5 minutes and your responses are completely confidential (we do not look for any personal details). The more responses we get the better we can gauge the pulse of Killarney locals in the run up to Christmas. We will report our findings in next week’s magazine.

Killarney Lions Club has launched a new initiative called Message in a Bottle aimed at helping older people, people living alone and people with medical conditions in cases of emergency. Message in a Bottle is a simple idea that encourages people to keep their basic medical details in a common place where, in cases of emergency, it can be easily accessed by Paramedics, Gardaí, Fire-fighters, and first responders. The initiative was launched on Monday at the Killarney Avenue Hotel. Killarney Lions Club launches new ‘Message in a Bottle’ initiative by representatives from medical, emergency, first responder and retirement organisations in the Killarney area. They heard about the benefits of the initiative, which started in Ireland eight years ago, from Damian Carbery, National Coordinator of Message in a Bottle, Lions Ireland, and James O’Loughlin, Ennis Lions Club. The ‘bottles’ (a plastic container) will be distributed through various organisations over the coming months. A person

who wants to use it completes their personal and medical information on a form that is then put in the container. They then put the container in the fridge, and put self-adhesive green crosses on the front door of their home and on the door of the fridge. In the event of an accident or incident within the home, the first responder/ emergency services on the scene will be alerted to the bottle by the label on the door.

"When we heard about Message in a Bottle from Lions Ireland we felt it would benefit the local community in Killarney," said Denis Doolan, President of Killarney Lions Club. "We suggested it to emergency, first responder and medical organisations who provide such services in our community, and they were very supportive. If it helps even just one person to get the help they need more quickly and effectively, it will be well worth it."

Dundag Christmas Day Swim Temporary repairs promised

on roads near An Gaelscoil

Local lady Niki McCarthy is organising the 13th Christmas Day Dip for charity Aware in memory of her 26-year-old sister Sylvan who took her own life in Wales in 2004. To date the dip has raised over €60,000. “I chose Aware because it's a charity that not only helps people who are struggling with mental health issues but also because it offers courses to obtain life skills for schools and adults and has many other in person or online courses that anyone can join to help improve individuals' mental health,” she said.

Temporary repairs will be made to the road surfaces on Lios An Fhia and Chestnut Drive on the approach to An Gaelscoil but a more permanent solution will take more time.

Niki McCarthy is organising the Dundag Christmas Day Swim to raise funds for AWARE

At a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting Cllr Martin Grady asked: “ That Killarney Municipal District would resurface a section of road at the entrance An Gaelscoil to as a matter of urgency. This is in a very poor state,” A Kerry County Council official replied:

“The full resurfacing of this road would need to be funded via a Restoration Improvement Grant. In the interim, the Killarney MD Office will, as much as possible, carry out repairs to this section of road. “The road will be considered when drafting the next Multi Annual Roads Programme, however, this particular section road has received planning approval to provide a Cycleway and Active Travel Measures, therefore any resurfacing would need to co-ordinated with these proposed works.”

Overseas tourism continues to rebound with air access from key source markets up on 2019 Overseas tourism to the island of Ireland continues to rebound in the first full year since pandemic limitations were lifted – according to Tourism Ireland. Air access to Ireland is up on winter 2019, including from two of the island’s biggest source markets, Great Britain (at 103% of 2019 levels) and North America (112%). Hotel occupancy is also ahead of 2019 levels, albeit with the caveat that the industry is operating in a new reality, with 13% of rooms under contract for humanitarian reasons. As Tourism Ireland prepares for 2024, the organisation is mounting a significant presence at World Travel Market in London this week, with around 75 tourism companies from the island of Ireland on its stand – from premium hotels, whiskey distilleries and jaunting car tours to visitor activities and hidden gems of heritage. Over the coming days, around 2,800 meetings will be conducted on the Ireland stand, delivering overseas tourism business for Ireland next year worth

millions of euro. Tourism Ireland will be bringing together those Irish tourism providers who have more capacity to welcome visitors with international tour operators with the skills and scale to bring valuable tourists to the island. WTM marks the beginning of the promotional drive overseas for 2024. It’s the largest B2B event in the global travel and tourism calendar. Alice Mansergh, Chief Executive Designate of Tourism Ireland, said: “As we look to 2024, our presence at World Travel Market is really important to kick-start our promotional drive overseas. In our first full year post pandemic, every tourism business is eager for recovery. When we talk to tourism operators across the island of Ireland, we know that overseas tourism is playing a vital role. “We are delighted to have around 75

St Brigid’s students visit Amsterdam

Leaving Cert students from St Brigid’s have just returned from their final school trip abroad.

Liam was joined on stage by his family members Saoirse, Oisín and Cillian.

During their three-day tour of Amsterdam, the students took in the NEMO science museum, the Anne Frank House tour, the Rijksmuseum, and the Irene Hoeve Cheese and Clog Warehouse. Students also took part in a cycling tour of the city, as well as travelling around the canals of Amsterdam on a relaxing scenic

boat tour. The boat trip followed a complete loop of the city, pointing out iconic highlights such as the A’DAM Tower, the Magere Brug, century old canal houses and historic neighbourhoods. “A wonderful time was had by all, and many thanks to Ms. Miriam Malone (year head), and the accompanying teachers, Ms Gilligan, Mr Roberts, Ms Healy, Ms McCarthy and Ms Daly,” said one of the organisers Jer Lyons.

Liam O’Connor enters Cork Hall of Fame

Killarney-based accordion maestro Liam O’Connor won new fans with his performance at the recent Rémy Martin Cork Business Awards 2023 at which he received with a Business Cork Hall of Fame Award 2023 for his services to the Arts, Culture and Entertainment. As part of the celebrations O’Connor turned in a dynamic live performance that drew enthusiastic plaudits from RTE’s Miriam O’Callaghan, Executive Chairman of Business Cork, Michael Mulcahy, and others. The event took place at a packed Convention Centre at the Clayton Hotel Silver Springs in Cork. As event host O’Callaghan posted on Instagram: “The icing on the cake was the extraordinarily talented Liam O’Connor and his band comprising of his two remarkable sons and daughter. No wonder O’Connor, who played with Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance, has been called the Jimi Hendrix of the accordion. It was a stunning moment watching him in action as he showed all of us there his magic. It was incredible.” Mulcahy was equally impressed. He said “We had an absolutely incredi-

ble and unexpected performance from the renowned Liam O'Connor at The Rémy Martin Cork Business Awards after he was presented with A Business Cork Hall of Fame Award 2023 for his services to the Arts, Culture and Entertainment Industry in Ireland and Globally.” The Newmarket, County Cork, native now based in Killarney, Liam was joined onstage by his family members Saoirse, Oisín and Cillian for a spectacular performance that brought the house down. Local women help steer Clanmaurice to Munster title Two local Camogie players were integral parts of the Clanmaurice Camogie Club’s qualification to the All-Ireland Intermediate semi-final this Sunday. Clanmaurice Camogie Club retained their Munster Intermediate title for the second year in a row last Sunday against Shannon Rovers (Tipperary) in an end to end nail biting encounter. The two sides were evenly matched and Clanmaurice had to wait to until extra time to pull ahead to secure the title. Danielle Looney from Rathmore and Kate Lynch from Glenflesk were members of the panel that only had 17 players available to them on the day. “Wearing the number nine, Kate Lynch played a pivotal role in midfield. She is well involved with the local camogie club, Killarney, where she played her juvenile camogie and is currently an active coach with the club. Both women are raising the standard for camogie within the county and are great role models for all involved in the game. Best of luck to Kate, Danielle

and all in Clanmaurice,” said a Killarney club official. The All Ireland Intermediate semi-final takes place this Sunday in The Ragg, Tipperary at 1pm where the Kerry team take on Shamrocks (Galway).

He came dashing through the town on Saturday night and packed streets greeted him with huge excitement. Yes, that's right - Santa Claus took some time out of his very busy schedule and arrived to town for the annual Christmas in Killarney switching on of the Christmas lights and Christmas magic parade on Saturday night. Spectacular Christmas floats, Disney characters, amazing snow horses, dancers, performers and famous US characters hit the town with a vengeance and, of course, Santa Claus himself, on his stunning reindeer sleigh. Sam Maguire also took pride of place and centre stage in Killarney.

Each Saturday night the parade will leave from the Fitzgerald Stadium, heading along Lewis Road, turning on to College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street and High Street before heading back up to the stadium via St Anne’s Road. There will be parades tomorrow (Saturday 2), Saturday next (December 9) and Saturday, December 16 so there will be plenty of opportunities for all the boys and girls – and the young at heart – to turn out to meet and greet Santa.

Silent majority needs to stand up and call out far-right hate Last Friday’s Dublin Riots should not have come as a surprise to anyone. | By Chris Davies It has been bubbling under the surface of Irish society for a good number of years now. The actions of a small minority last week was a culmination of years of racism, hatred and misinformation shared online by far-right groups. Late on Friday night a disturbing WhatsApp voice note was doing the rounds on social media where a far-right actor could clearly be heard encouraging violence on the streets of Dublin. “'Seven o'clock, be in town. Everyone bally up, tool up…Any foreigner, just kill them” Watching the Riots unfold on social media brought me back to when I was working in Dublin a number of years back. My morning commute from Skerries to the city centre involved a dart to Connolly Station followed by a short trip on the Luas to the Jervis. Every week, without fail, I would witness at least one racial slur or attack on someone who didn’t fit the narrow minded view of what an Irish person should look, dress or talk like. I don’t know if it is the eerie silence of public transport that seems to amplify the situation, but that’s where I found it to be most common. The abuse was usually perpetrated by a group of youths or someone who was clearly under the influ-

ence of drink or drugs. The victims were always of colour, often dressed smartly enough to presume they were on their way, or coming from work. A far cry from the perpetrators who you could tell were roaming aimlessly around the city looking for trouble. While shameful to admit, I would often look on and watch the abuse unfold, only to spend the rest of my work day thinking about the poor person who was told to “F*&K off back to your own country”. I would sit at my desk questioning why I didn’t step in and say something. There were one or two occasions where I did step in and call it out, but not nearly often enough. This disgusting behaviour is much more visible in our cities. Since moving back to Killarney I wouldn’t witness as much direct abuse on the streets but working with the Killarney Advertiser I would be tuned in to local news and some of the comments I read on our social platforms are far more disgusting than anything I witnessed during my time in Dublin.

There is a significant group of people in Ireland that I would call the ‘silent majority’. We are not as outspoken on issues we care about. We tend to observe and consume the news quietly, and only speak of our support or disgust on certain issues in close circles, too afraid we might offend someone. The problem with this is that we are leaving these far-right groups unchallenged, to become louder, more aggressive and more hostile as seen last week. The past week Sinn Fein and the Social Democrats have been busy in the media expressing no confidence in Justice Minister Helen McEntee and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris but I would suggest that there is a large percentage of the Irish population that bears some of the responsibility. We witness racism in our communities and online every day and we need to start speaking up and calling it out. On the issue of immigration in Killarney, there is no doubt resources are being stretched and our tourism industry is suffering as a result of an influx of immi-

Seven o'clock, be in town. Everyone bally up, tool up… Any foreigner, just kill them

gration. Locals have also raised concerns in relation to the placement of so many male international protection applicants in one setting and we only have to look back on the incident in Hotel Killarney last year where a number of men were involved in a harrowing stabbing incident to see how that played out. However, being concerned around immigration is not the same as anti-immigration. It is important to raise these issues with local representatives and Kerry TD’s but also to separate ourselves from farright groups who are only interested in encouraging violence. The anarchy we witnessed last week should never be the answer and research shows it is completely unnecessary. Harvard University have looked at hundreds of protests over the last century, and found that non-violent campaigns are twice as likely to achieve their goals as violent campaigns and that it only takes around 3.5% of the population actively participating in the protests to ensure serious political change. Let's continue to protest peacefully for issues we believe in, but stand up and speak out against people and movements in our community that incite hate and violence.

Killarney Rotary Club Annual Wine and Art Night Killarney Rotary Club Annual Wine and Art Night is a masterpiece, as many local charities and communities will benefit. | By Grace Foley Known for being one of the year's social high points in Killarney, the event took place in the Great Southern, Killarney this week. This is a charity event that is in its 20th year and all proceeds raised from the evening will go to local charities and community projects. The Rotary District Governor, Kenneth Fisher and his wife Betty were in attendance on the evening. They travelled all the way from Enniskillen in County Fermanagh. Mr Fisher accepted an invitation extended by the Killarney Rotary Club, President Barry Murphy. Mr Fisher is responsible for all the 70+ Rotary Clubs on the island of Ireland, with one in almost every county and around 1,500 members in total. The Rotary District Governor, Kenneth Fisher said “I heard about this event as it is one of Rotary Club’s biggest events. We were delighted when Killarney Rotary Club President Barry Murphy reached out. The evening has been amazing, a great gathering for the local area, showing them working together and it’s incredibly vibrant.” President of Killarney Rotary Club, Mr Barry Murphy said the event was a “great opportunity to the professional and amateur artists and crafters to display their work, to a most appreciative audience in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, whilst sipping a glass, nibbling a selection of cheeses, and finger food.”

There was a selection of cheeses, breads and wines available on the night provided by Daly’s Supervalu, Killarney and there was also a selection of local beers and ales courtesy of Killarney Brewing and Distilling Company. Artists and craftspeople from across Kerry and beyond displayed their work. One craftsman who was there for the first time was Seán O' Ceannabháin from Killarney Pens. O' Ceannabháin makes handmade pens using native Killarney woods. He said: “From start to finish the evening was spectacular, it was great for both local and non-local businesses and I for one will definitely be back next year.” Local Killarney Artist Therese O’Keeffe was also in attendance. Her work, which is typically abstract and impressionist, has been on display at the event every year since it began. O’Keeffe said: “Tonight itself has been a masterpiece and a great opportunity for me every year to meet local Killarney people and beyond while displaying my art” The Rotary Club held an auction with art pieces which were kindly donated by attending artists and crafters. One of the items auctioned was a signed Kerry Jersey. There was also a raffle held on the night in aid of the Irish Pilgrimage Trust. Music was provided by the renowned musician, Mike Neeson throughout the night.

Extras in The Wind that Shakes the Barley.

In the Name of the OsKaR!

Excitement is at fever pitch in the parishes of Glenflesk and Kilcummin in the build up to their joint fundraiser ‘A Night at the OsKaRs’, which takes place on December 7 in the Gleneagle, INEC Arena.

This is the second time the clubs have joined forces to organise the event, which was a sell out when previously held in 2018. “The interest and enthusiasm of locals wanting to take part has been incredible from the start,” said Derry Healy of Glenflesk GAA. There are 103 cast members and over 100 extras taking part in the 8 films, so there will be stiff competition for the coveted ‘OsKaR Awards’ on the night. The involvement of popular local priests, Fr Jim Lenihan and Fr. Joe Begley in this year’s event is adding to the excitement and interest in both parishes and beyond. Fr. Jim and Fr. Joe will be taking a brief break from the altar to walk the red carpet as actors in OsKaRs 2023. Despite being very busy with parish responsibilities, Fr. Jim and Fr. Joe took on their respective roles as Dennis in ‘Kerry Girls’ and as Kevin in ‘The Wind that Shakes the Barley’ with enthusiasm and a great sense of fun. “We were delighted when Fr. Joe and Fr. Jim decided to get involved,” said Niamh Dwyer of Kilcummin GAA, “And the bit of healthy rivalry has really added to the event for everyone. They both have strong connections with the two parishes, so there has been plenty of banter throughout the filming and in the lead up to December 7.” There will be six more outstanding films shown on the night including ‘Braveheart’, ‘Bridesmaids’, ‘Calendar Girls’, ‘Veronica Guerin’, ‘Blues Sisters’ and ‘Downfall’.

A tough task lies ahead for the judges and all eyes will be on the big screen in the INEC to see which films and individuals will be picking up the awards on the night. The award for ‘Best Film’ will be voted on by the audience and there will be prizes for the ‘Best Dressed’ male and female in the crowd. It is guaranteed to be nonstop entertainment from start to finish. Doors will open at 6.30pm and the show will start at 7.30pm. Post-show celebrations are set to continue late into the night with a DJ in the Backstage Bar at the Gleneagle. Tickets are selling quickly and a capacity crowd of 2,000 people is expected again this year. Tickets are €32.50 and can be purchased online. Links are available on the The OsKaRs by Glenflesk & Kilcummin GAA Facebook and Instagram pages as well as on www.kilcummingaa.com. Hotel Killarney staff raise €7000 for Bumbleance The team at Hotel Killarney presented a cheque for €7000 to Bumbleance on November 24. These funds were raised as a result of the efforts of all the management and staff at Hotel Killarney throughout the month of October. “We hosted a series of events throughout the month including a family fun day and a spin-a -thon. We are also grateful

for the generosity of our guests and the Crimmins family who contributed as well. Bumbleance, the Children’s Ambulance Service of Ireland provide a much-needed service for sick kids and their families throughout the country. Hotel Killarney were honoured to raise funds for this very deserving charity,” said the hotel’s Duty Manager Louise Daly

Killarney residents advised to tell Cork friends about free Christmas bus Relations might well be rather strained come Munster Championship time but, given that it’s the season of goodwill, Kerry is extending the hand of friendship across the county bounds in a gesture of Christmas solidarity with the Cork neighbours. In keeping with the traditional festive theme of giving, the Christmas in Killarney Festival is organising a free return bus from the city by the Lee to the heart of Killarney town to enable Rebel hearts to be lined with an extra layer of warmth in the country’s Christmas capital. The coach will depart from Merchant’s Quay in Cork city centre at 10.00am on Saturday, December 2nd with a stop in Ballincollig and, thanks to the new Macroom bypass, it will arrive in Killarney in no time. Locals in Killarney might be more inclined to rollout a green and gold carpet rather than the red variety to welcome the guests from Cork who can enjoy a day of quality shopping, a wonderful at-

mosphere and all the Christmas season excitement before the fantastic Magic Parade, with Disney charters, festive floats and, of course, Santa Claus himself. After a day of great excitement and a chance to savour the real Christmas experience, the bus will return to Cork at 7.30pm. People in Kerry have been advised to inform their relatives and friends in Cork of the great initiative to ensure they can enjoy the most magical time of the year in the most magical town in the country. Places are limited and bookings can be made from November 27 at www.christmasinkillarney.com

At this month's meeting of Kerry County Council, Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill called for funding to be provided to surface dress the busy road from Beaufort Bridge to Beaufort Village. "This is a very busy road on the outskirts of Killarney. Beaufort is a very popular

tourist area and this particular road carries traffic for the Gap of Dunloe, Kate Kearneys and the McGillycuddy Reeks and locally it carries traffic to the village, GAA grounds and the Community Centre,” said Councillor Cahill. Kerry County Council confirmed that the road from Beaufort Bridge to Beaufort Village will be Surface Dressed in 2024.

€15 Million Bailout for Peter McVerry Trust Sought Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien is seeking Cabinet approval for a €15 million bailout for the Peter McVerry Trust as the charity deals with financial issues.

Viewers shocked to find out jungle is under roof

The Peter Mcverry Trust is one of the biggest homeless charities in the country. In recent months, it's been dealing with cash flow problems and significant debts. The Department of Housing confirmed this week that it has received a request for a bailout. Senator Victor Boyhan, who raised the matter, commented in the Seanad this week by saying, “The charity needs Government support now to continue its work and advocacy. Yes, corporate governance issues will have to be examined and indeed strengthened and confidence rebuilt and any additional money granted must come with conditions”.

Fans of the ITV hit show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out were shocked to learn this week that the jungle campsites are in fact covered with a roof in order to protect the contestants and expensive equipment from the outdoor elements. Fans became suspicious when they noticed the fire burning no matter the weather with one fan commenting "Funny that when it’s pouring down with rain the fire's still going and their hair's never wet."

Trapped Indian workers rescued after 17 days There were jubilant scenes in India on Tuesday as rescue workers saved the lives of 41 construction workers who were trapped in a collapsed tunnel in the Himalayas for 17 days. After a major rescue operation and days spent drilling through the debris of rock, concrete and earth to reach them the men finally saw daylight. The men are reportedly low-wage workers from some of India's poorest regions,

who stuck in the 4.5 kilometre (3 mile) tunnel in Uttarakhand state since it collapsed on November 12. Initially people feared the worst for the workers but they were seen alive for the first time last week, peering into the lens of an endoscopic camera sent by rescuers down a thin pipe through which air, food, water, oxygen, medicine and electricity were delivered. Once the rescuers knew the men were alive and well search operations expanded and eventually all men were pulled to safety.

Iconic Irish singer Shane MacGowan passes away aged 65 Shane MacGowan (65), Irish folk hero and frontman of The Pogues, passed away Thursday having been in intensive care for several months after being diagnosed with viral encephalitis last year. A memorable occasion was when he and Imelda May performed ‘Fairytale of New York ‘ at the INEC with Imelda May on New Year’s Eve in 2009. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Shane MacGowan. Shane performed here many times over the years

and hearing him sing Fairytale of New York with Imelda May on New Year’s Eve 2009 was one of the INEC’s all-time greatest moments. Our sympathies are with his family and many friends at this sad time,” said Patrick O’Donoghue, CEO Gleneagle Group. The son of Irish immigrants, Shane MacGowan was born on December 25, 1957, in Kent. His legacy was cemented when The Pogues released the famous Christmas hit alongside the late Kirsty MacColl in 1987.

Irish Pub goes viral with Christmas video produced on iPhone Charlie’s Bar in Enniskillen, Co Fer Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, unveiled its festive advert on Friday with some calling it better than John Lewis' renowned productions.

Is this the story of how Spiderman came to be? English man Colin Blake and his wife were docked from their cruise in Marseille, France, when his toe started to swell up and turn purple. When they jumped back on the ship the next day Mr. Blake visited the on-board doctor who told him a Peruvian wolf spider had bitten him and laid eggs inside his toe. Wolf spiders, which are not poisonous, are often found in the French port city after arriving on cargo ships. Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland this week Mr. Black said: "My wife thought it may be because I had new sandals and

The video shows an elderly man with a sad expression, walking through town alone. In the advert, the man is ignored by people passing him on the street who acare too immersed in their own lives to ac knowledge or say hello to the man. That is until he enters the bar and is joined by a small dog and it's owners who

sit, drink and talk with him. The video - which was filmed and edited by Aoife Teague on an iphone has gone viral racking over millions of views on social media. The video ends on a quote from a W. B. Yeats poem: "There are no strangers here, only friends you haven't yet met" and is a gentle reminder for all of us to check in with the elderly and those who you think might be a bit lonely this Christmas and that one salute, or conversation can have a significant impact on someone’s day.

they were rubbing on my big toe and that was causing it to be red." However after the doctor cut his toe open, spider's eggs starting to spill out. After the holiday, Mr Blake went to hospital in the UK where doctors prescribed antibiotics - but four weeks later, he noticed his toe still was not right. After another visit to the doctors, they discovered one of the eggs had hatched into a small spider, which was stuck underneath his skin. He said: "They believe the spider was making its way out - eating its way out of my toe."

Redemption for Pride of Ireland Katie Taylor In what has been a trailblazing career littered with remarkable achievements, Katie Taylors victory against Chantelle Cameron cements her place in history as one of Irelands greatest ever sports people. In what will seem a distant memory for her now, 6 months ago Taylor suffered her first defeat as a professional fighter to the same opponent but last Saturday night in a packed out 3 Arena there was Redemption for the Bray native. The victory will feel all the sweeter after many pundits wrote her off – at the age of 37 and off the back of a heavy defeat many believed the world's most iconic female boxer had run her race. Speaking at her post-fight conference she told the media: "I was nearly half offended that people were writing me off so much. It's great to prove people wrong and I'm back on top again" "This is what dreams are made of. Twoweight undisputed champion, this is

more than a dream” "I had a lot of pressure going into this fight. It was the longest six months waiting for the rematch. I had sleepless nights thinking about the loss." It is easy to forget that when Katie Tay-

lor was growing up Ireland with a dream to one day be world champion, it was in fact illegal for her to box, women were not allowed to box in the in the Olympics and there are stories of her tucking her hair into her head gear and going out and

competing in boys competitions growing up. Fast forward some years later and she broke new ground for Ireland and womens boxing as a whole – Gold at the London Olympics in 2012 and becoming Ireland's first undisputed boxing world champion in the four-belt era and to sell out Madison Square Garden. Even so, Taylor felt beating Briton Cameron "definitely feels like the greatest night of my career so far". Cameron was previously unbeaten in 18 pro fights and a trilogy fight between Taylor and Cameron is now on the cards, in what would be the first super-fight in women's boxing. If it does happen she wants it at GAA HQ: "To have a trilogy would be iconic for the sport," Taylor said. "Even better if we could have it at Croke Park, with 80,000 people. Retirement for 37-year-old Taylor can’t be far away but judging by her post-fight comments last week we expect to see at least one more epic night of boxing in Ireland before then.

Calls to honour Msgr. Hugh O’Flaherty's 60th anniversary Kerry County Council have been asked by Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill, to include a fitting memorial to the internationally renowned World War 2 hero Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty in the Public Realm plans for Cahersiveen town, under the Town Regeneration Plan. Although he was born in Kiskeam, where his mother's family were from, in North Cork, Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty grew up in Killarney, where his father was the steward of the old Killarney Golf Club when it was located in Deerpark. Hugh had a vocation for the priesthood and as a young seminarian he was posted to Rome in 1922, the year Mussolini came to power in Italy. He earned a degree in theology in just one year while studying in Rome, was ordained in 1925 and continued his studies for a further two years, earning doctorates in divinity, canon law and philosophy. Monsignor O’Flaherty was a former resident of Cahersiveen who was responsible for saving the lives of 6,500 Allied soldiers and Jews in Rome, during the conflict. “Monsignor O’Flaherty became known as the Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican during his heroic exploits and he still has strong family connections with Cahersiveen. His niece, Pearl Dineen, was interviewed on Nationwide on RTE the other night, in a programme dedicated to him. The remains of Monsignor O’Flaherty rest in peace in the grounds of the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Church since his death in Cahersiveen on 30 November 1963 – 60 years ago,” said Councillor Cahill. “I have studied the Monsignor, watched programmes and read books about his

truly fascinating life. For decades there was very little known about him here at home in Ireland, whereas internationally he was a hero, he was a hero in Rome, he was a hero in Europe and he was a hero throughout the world. He put his life continuously at risk while trying to save the lives of others, namely Italian Jews and Allied Troops and airmen in Rome, while at the same time trying to avoid the Nazis and the Gestapo,” added Rossbeigh based Councillor. “In 1960, Monsignor O'Flaherty suffered a serious stroke during Mass and was forced to return to Ireland. Shortly before his first stroke in 1960, he was about to be confirmed as the papal nuncio to Tanzania. He moved to Cahersiveen to live with his sister, at whose home he died aged 65. In early 1963 while very unwell he travelled to London as a special guest on the TV Programme, ‘This is Your Life’, when eight million viewers tuned into the BBC to see this great man,” said the Fianna Fáil Councillor. “I believe the timing is now right, on the 60th anniversary of his death, for a fitting, permanent memorial to be placed in the heart of Cahersiveen town, to honour this great man. I have asked Kerry County Council to include such a fitting project in the Public Realm plans, under the €19.5 million Town Regeneration Scheme in Cahersiveen,” added Councillor Cahill.

Kerry Food Hub honoured at Chambers Ireland annual awards The innovation and employment offered by the Kerry Food Hub based in Firies has been recognised this week with a prestigious national award. Kerry County Council was presented with an honour at the Chambers Ireland annual awards at the weekend in recognition of how the Food Hub promotes economic development in the county. The Kerry Food Hub is managed by a board of social entrepreneurs and its purpose-built food production facilities in Firies provide start-up entrepreneurs and food businesses with the opportunity to expand and develop in purpose-built facilities. Since opening in 2016, the Hub’s artisan occupants have quickly built strong relationships with food industry professionals in their key markets. They have also found the Hub a great location from which to serve retail outlets in the major urban centres in the county. In 2022, The Kerry Food Hub, completed ten new 1,000sq ft food grade

production units and launched artisanmarket.ie, a multi-vendor online marketplace linking artisan food producers and professional buyers. Fifty-five people are currently employed by the food entrepreneurs operating from the Kerry Food Hub. Cathaoirleach of the Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District, Cllr Bobby O’Connell said: “The overall aim of the Kerry Food Hub is to enhance employment, it was the vision of local farmer David Gleeson. Mr Gleeson assembled a group of local social entrepreneurs to enhance employment opportunities in the region and make the community it serves a better place to live and work through the creation of employment opportunities. “Since opening in 2016, the Hub’s artisan occupants have quickly built strong relationships with the industry across the county. I pay tribute to everyone involved in the Food Hub as well as our own team in the Economic Development Unit for supporting the initiative since its inception.”

Locally sourced seasonal produce inspires menu at Cahernane The luxurious, four-star Cahernane House Hotel is fast becoming known as a food lover’s heaven and with Executive Head Chef, Cormac Vesey at the helm the cooking is as skilful as it is tantalising, offering patrons an elegant yet uncomplicated dining experience. With Cormac leading the charge at the main hotel restaurant ‘Herbert’s’ the menu showcases all of the best of the sea and the land and offers gourmet cuisine but without any fussy embellishments. Emer Corridan, the General Manager of Cahernane House Hotel hosted an eightcourse tasting menu in Herbert’s Restaurant (on November 24). The fabulous dining experience, called ‘A Taste of Cahernane’ saw guests enjoying a spectacular menu inspired by the best locally produced seasonal produce. Cormac’s focus on food provenance and seasonal ingredients lies at the heart of everything he does and is the corner-

stone of his cooking. Speaking to guests on the night he said: “Great dishes start with great flavours, it’s my job to make the ingredients sing, it’s not my job to over complicate the best that mother nature has already provided.” “I don’t subscribe to the idea there has to be all of these extra flourishes such as gels and foams to make a dish impressive, great dishes don’t need that. I like to start from the beginning, and to look and see what’s in season. What’s growing now is going to be the very, very best thing on

your plate. It’s incredible how something as simple as a winter root vegetable can become something extraordinary with careful and thoughtful cooking. Ingredients don’t need to be pimped up and made into something they aren’t they just need to be complemented and matched carefully and thoughtfully.” The tasting commenced with a sensational game terrine served with pickled walnut and quince, followed by a pumpkin tortellone stuffed with delicate dingle goat’s cheese and sage.

1.12.2023 Guests were then treated to a perfectly cooked seared scallop on a bed of beurre noisette and cauliflower followed by roast venison that was a triumph to look at and taste. The sheep’s yoghurt with bee pollen and plum provided a refreshing taste revival before diners enjoyed a decadent dark chocolate orange dessert served with jaffa cake ice cream. The evening provided the kitchen team with the opportunity to showcase the culinary offering at Cahernane and gave diners the chance to experience the dishes in an elegant and relaxed setting. Each of the courses were beautifully presented and executed and each dish was a celebration of the best locally produced seasonal produce. The complete culinary experience was finished off with homemade Petit Fours, served with tea and coffee. Cormac Vesey then went out to the dining room to chat to the guests about the meal and the produce which was used. Herbert’s Restaurant, The Cellar Bar and the Drawing Room at Cahernane House Hotel all offer various dining options for guests and visitors. Herbert’s is a fine dining restaurant while the Cellar Bar serves casual fare, cocktails and artisan gins and beers. The Drawing Room, overlooking the mature garden is an elegant space to relax in front of the fire and read while enjoying a glass of something lovely. All the dining outlets are open to both hotel residents and non-residents alike.

The date – St Brigid’s Day - is particularly poignant for those involved, with the show set to incorporate the extraordinary Irish saint and mark her 1500th anniversary. Renowned fashion designer Colin Horgan will be the star attraction of the event, showcasing a number of pieces from his new collection, while beloved Ballyheigue designer Don O’Neill - the

charity’s newly appointed Patron - will showcase a select few pieces from his fashion archive. The event will be MC’d by legendary RTE broadcaster, Mary Kennedy, who will also facilitate an exclusive Q&A session with both designers, who will chat about their amazing careers and no doubt enthral the audience with stories of starting their respective fashion journeys from humble

Killarney Advertiser continue to support Historic Rally The Killarney Advertiser and KC Print are, once again, supporting the Towers Hotel and Leisure Centre’s Killarney Historic Rally this weekend. The event is always a fantastic celebration of classic cars and rich rally heritage in the Killarney area. The Towers Hotel and Leisure Centre (part of the ODR Collection) was officially announced as the event’s headline sponsor last month and will be the main headquarters for this year's event. The rally will officially commence with a ceremonial start on Friday night between 7-8.30 pm outside The Killarney Plaza Hotel (a member of the ODR Collection of hotels). The traditional town centre start ramp, which is another highlight of the Christmas in Killarney Festival, will be placed directly outside the town centre hotel. A number of stages will follow over the weekend including an exciting nighttime stage which has been reintroduced for the first time in many years. Full details of rally stages can be found in the programme which is now on sale in the majority of local outlets. Cormac Casey, owner of KC Print Group and the Killarney Advertiser has a long-standing tradition of supporting all events that Killarney and District Motor Club run throughout the year and this year's Killarney Historic Rally is no different. To the frustration of the Killarney Advertiser and KC Print teams, Cormac

has been a difficult man to get a hold of the past two weeks as he puts many of his business interests on hold to ensure the event is well looked in terms of their print, signage and branding needs. We did however manage to catch him between jobs for a quick few words. "KC Print Group and the Killarney Advertiser are proud supporters of the local community and is committed to promoting events that bring people together. The Historic Rally is a perfect example of this commitment. Since the running of the first event, in 1996, the Killarney Advertiser has been proudly promoting the event locally, in fact, KC Print produced the very first event programme under the guidance of the, then Clerk of the Course and founder of the event, the late Maurice Nagle,” he said. "Many Killarney locals may not realise it but this event has gained legendary status in the rallying community, with all credit going to the organisers and the town of Killarney which hosts it." In addition to the rally itself, there will be a number of other other activities taking place throughout the weekend culminating with the finish ramp outside the Plaza Hotel around 6 pm Saturday and prizegiving ceremony at the Killarney Avenue later that evening.

Kerry ladies ‘delighted’ to get new pitch at Currans | By Adam Moynihan

New Kerry GAA field to be allocated exclusively to ladies’ football Kerry ladies joint-manager Darragh Long has welcomed the news that Kerry GAA will be allocating one of their new training pitches exclusively to Kerry LGFA. The men’s county board will develop three new fields – two sand-based and one 4G - at their Centre of Excellence in Currans, with one being made available solely for the use of the Kerry ladies’ teams. Last year, tensions ran high between the county’s GAA and LGFA bodies when Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh revealed that she and her teammates were not being allowed to train in Currans, despite a large picture of the current Player of the Year adorning the outside wall of the state-of-the-art x facility. Kerry GAA put that down to the unavailability of pitches at the time, and the ladies were subsequently invited back in to use the Centre of Excellence during their run to the 2022 All-Ireland final. Being officially allocated one of the new fields will guarantee the Kerry ladies’ a place at the Centre of Excellence moving forward. With the amalgamation of the GAA and the LGFA coming over the horizon, this new agreement is another positive step towards equality. “We’re absolutely delighted that we’ll finally have a pitch to call home,”

joint-manager Long told the Killarney Advertiser. “I think it’s hugely important for the ladies’ game to have a base at the GAA Centre of Excellence, especially with the amalgamation coming down the tracks as well. We’re all going to be under the one umbrella. “For all the young girls coming up now, and for generations to come, they can really look forward to being out there training alongside the top male and female players in the county.” The news, which was already known to those involved on both sides, became public this week ahead of Kerry GAA’s upcoming annual convention. Secretary Peter Twiss will outline the development plans in his annual report. “We are delighted to have entered an agreement with our sister Association, Kerry LGFA, designating one of the sand-based pitches for their sole use,” Twiss’ report reads. “This initiative confirms the Board’s strong support for Kerry Ladies Football and Kerry Camogie. We will continue to work closely with both Associations as all three bodies move toward full amalgamation.” Meanwhile, Treasurer Tom Keane is set to report an operating profit of €400,000 for Kerry GAA in the last year, with €2.8m in the bank and outstanding loans of €1.5m.

Top performance seals significant win for Lakers Scotts Lakers put in a superb performance on Saturday last to defeat the Limerick Celtics 90-77 as Braden Bell and Jack O’Sullivan contributed 51 points in a memorable home win. League leader Bell registered another 30-point game and O’Sullivan chipped in with 21, but the performances of Terion Moss, Oisín Spring, Eoin Carroll, Paul Clarke and Jamie O’Sullivan were also very important. Moss had 12 points and ten assists while Spring, Carroll, Clarke and Jamie O’Sullivan combined for 27 points. Sharing the scoring burden is something captain Paul Clarke feels is crucial. "The local lads must show up in every game and if you look at our wins the spread of scoring has definitely been key,” Clarke told club PRO Enda Walshe. “As amazing as Braden and Terion are, we can't just stand there and expect them to do everything." "It doesn't matter what size or age you are, you have to be physical in defence. We really upped that tonight especially against their big man Motley. It's the

reason we won the game. You have to be able to change your approach sometimes, both in offence and defence, and I'm finding that I'm playing closer to the basket at both ends of the floor." The Lakers are beginning to gather some momentum and with the fixture calendar giving them a three-week hiatus, Clarke now has a window to further implement his ideas. Their next game is at home to Malahide on Saturday, December 9. That will be followed by a trip to Tolka on December 16 and the visit of the Drogheda Wolves on December 30.

ST PAUL’S

The St Paul’s women’s team made it seven wins out of seven last weekend as James Fleming’s side ran out 74-67 winners against Templeogue. Khairica Rasheed played a pivotal role for the Killarney club in what was a hardfought win on the road, with Sofia Paska, Rheanne O’Shea and Lynn Jones also in fine form. Lorraine Scanlon, Denise Dunlea, Niamh Ní Chonchubhair and Meabh Barry also made important contributions. It's obvious now that Fleming's squad have built a strong team spirit, something

newcomer Rasheed has immediately tapped into. Having won a Super League title last year with Glanmire, the American knows what it's all about. "I learned a lot from Britany Byrd (her American teammate at Glanmire), she showed me the ropes alongside my teammates pushing me to be more aggressive,” Rasheed said. “This year I'm playing in a new position and I'm stepping more into that scorer mentality. "The team is so competitive and our mentality going into every game is to win no matter how close the game may be. And in those close games that you do come through, it helps build up the spirit and that's really beneficial for us as a team.” It's a lunchtime tip off this Saturday when

St Paul’s travel to Dublin to take on the Swords Thunder in the ALSAA Sports Centre. Swords started the season strongly but recent defeats to Tolka Rovers and Templeogue were less impressive. Jensen Caretti has been their shining light so far this season; the Ohio State native is averaging around 20 points per game. Jasmine Walker has been playing in the Irish league for the last five years and her combination with Caretti will have to be watched. Peggy Black, Kate Kelly and Megan Howe form the backbone of their squad and past results will count for nothing as St Paul’s look to extend their winning start to the season. Tip-off is at 1pm.

100 years on, Jimmy’s family to get his Munster medal In Part 2 of his piece on Dublin sportsman Jimmy Bermingham, Eamonn Fitzgerald reveals that Jimmy’s family have received good news from the Munster Council There was great rejoicing in Donnycarney last week when the Berminghams, Paul, Mossy, Terry, Liz, and their 90-year-oldmother Bernadette, received the following message from the Munster Council: "Following validation of the involvement of Jimmy Bermingham on the Kerry team in the 1923 Munster Senior Football Final, Munster GAA have approved the commissioning of a 1923 Munster Senior Football medal for descendants of Jimmy and the extended Bermingham family." Last week we featured the remarkable story of Jimmy Bermingham, a brilliant player who won every soccer honour available in the 1920s and 1930s, includ-

ing three international caps. His only experience of Gaelic football was while he was a member of the Free State National army that landed in Fenit on 2 August 1922 with the sole purpose of putting ‘smacht’ (discipline) on the Kerry Republicans who still defied the new Irish government. Dick Fitzgerald, holder of five All-Irelands, was also a prominent Pro-Treaty supporter and a close friend of Michael Collins. Dickeen, author of How to Play Gaelic Football (1914), invited Bermingham to join Dr Crokes and try out Gaelic football. He was corner forward on the Kerry team

that defeated Tipperary 0-6 to 0-3 in the 1923 Munster final played in Tralee in October 1924. The match had been postponed as the country was emerging from the Civil War, a bitter war which was especially bitter in Kerry. Bermingham never played Gaelic football anywhere, not even in his native Dublin, and he resumed his soccer career when he returned to his 6th Regiment Dublin Guard after his 18-month spell of duty in Kerry. After his honourable discharge on 14 February 1924, he resumed his soccer career playing with different teams such as the hugely successful Wasps, Brideville,

Brooklyn, Dolphin and Bohs, where he still has legendary status. Jimmy went on to have an extraordinary sporting career, winning every competition possible including leagues, cups, and a European competition with Bohs. He was capped three times for Ireland. He was an amateur, of course, and worked as a wire weaver with Smith & Pearson until he retired in 1973. That was located near the Five Lamps. He gained his first amateur international cap in 1929, just five years after winning his Munster medal with Kerry. That team was run by the FLIFS (Football League of Irish Free State). He scored on his in-

BODIES

Let’s be clear about the governing bodies of soccer at that time in Ireland. You had FLIFS (Free State) and the IFA (Irish Football Association, in Northern Ireland). The FA governed soccer in England, as it still does, but the FAI as we know it today came later. Bermingham was a member of the star-studded Bohs team and four members of that team - McMahon, Horlacher, Bermingham and Morton - were picked to play for the All-Ireland 32 counties team. McMahon was born in Derry and the only one of them with an natural affinity with Northern Ireland. It was anathema to the new Irish Free State government, who had accepted the 26 counties version of Ireland, that the IFA would select players from those 26 counties for international duty against England (both the old and very recent enemy of that time). The FLIFS muscled in very quickly and what followed were ultimatums, objections, court injunctions and a high profile High Court proceeding which still makes for fascinating reading nearly 100 years later. All hell broke loose. Here is a summary the protracted and much publicised saga fought out so publicly, starting at the end of 1930. The selectors of the All-Ireland team were so impressed with the performances of four of the all-conquering Bohs team that they selected McMahon, Horlacher, Bermingham and Morton from The Gypsies. Banner headlines in the Belfast Newsletter on 10 November 1930: ‘Irish amateur surprise, Free State players selected for Saturday’s international’. Four days later the same Belfast newspaper stated: “The North is jubilant over this sensational development in the Irish football controversy. A telegram has been received by the IFA from four Bohemian players – McMahon, Horlacher, Bermingham and Morton – chosen to represent amateur Ireland against England at Cliftonville, Belfast, intimating their acceptance of the invitation to play, and thanking the Association for the honour.” And then, on November 11, the FLIFS commented: “The Emergency Committee of the FA of the FLIFS has learned with astonishment – through the press – of the action of the IFA in selecting players born and playing within the area under the jurisdiction… to play in the match between England and Northern Ireland at Belfast, misrepresented as an amateur match ‘Ireland’ versus England. “This committee regards such action as a gross act of discourtesy and arrogance… and also contrary to the terms of the Liverpool conference in 1923 which recognised the authority of this association to be complete and independent within its own area. “This committee forbids any players reg-

istered and playing under our jurisdiction and who were born within the area now known as the Irish Free State from playing in this or any other match arranged by the IFA.” What it did not say in its statement is that the 26-county Republic was not deemed a nation as such, rather it had dominion status as agreed by Collins and the Pro-Treaty delegation. The Minister for External Affairs was briefed on the matter which was also sent to FIFA and the English FA. McMahon previously played an amateur international but was a member of Derry City then under IFA. The Liverpool Conference of 1923 stated that the FL of the Irish Free State was the sole ruling body of Free State football. IFA was restricted to the six counties but was also granted the right to speak for Ireland in international matters. There was no agreement on the subject of internationals and that was significant. Until this, the IFA had never selected Free State club players since the foundation of the Free State. Those professionals in England played for both. The Free State had passed a resolution on the night of the 13th protesting against Nordies (North of Ireland) choosing Free State players and forbidding the players to participate.

COMPLICATED

The Irish Examiner stated that this created a very complicated situation, likely to be productive of a crisis. The players’ attitudes was justified by former Bohs President Tom Greene who insisted ama-

teur players should not be bound by professional rules and could play for whom they pleased. Greene said that Bohs were supportive of the players whatever they chose. Bohs were still in a quandary and on the 14th, their committee passed a resolution advising their players to abide by the ruling of the Free State. Their top four players later told the committee they would play the game. Two prominent officials quit, Greene and VP JJ Doyle. Greene strongly favoured the players. Doyle differed. “A serious split in the Bohemian club is feared as a result,” it was noted in the press. The ban came as a shock, and “its effects may be far-reaching”. The Ban was not recognised in N.I. and the players were expected to go play at Cliftonville. On the day before the England game, the other three Bohs players including Bermingham joined the rest of the All-Ireland team at Cliftonville while the IFA heavily promoted the game and the involvement of the cross-border players. November 15. All-Ireland v England international game played at Cliftonville, Belfast. The All-Ireland team won 3-1 and the four Bohs players starred. The match report stated that: “an Irish eleven containing the four defiant Bohs players decisively beat England in Belfast 3-1. Bermingham playing at inside right and Horlacher on the wing tormented the English and linked up well to set up the first goal after a great cross.” Nov 19: “The Emergency committee of the FSIFSA of the Irish Free State having

considered the explanations furnished by Birmingham, Horlacher and Morton… as regards their failure to obey an order of this committee… do not regard the explanation as satisfactory. The actions of the players concerned a direct challenge to the recognised football authority in the Irish Free State, in as much as they are deemed guilty of conduct objectionable… The council cannot allow its authority to be flouted by any player under its jurisdiction and accordingly the three players are hereby banned from further participation in football.” This led to the famous High Court proceedings (more on that in next week’s edition).

JAMES MCCLEAN Nearly 100 years later I think of James McClean winning his 103rd cap for Ireland. Born in Derry, he played U21 soccer with Northern Ireland but declined a callup to the senior squad because he wanted to play for the Republic of Ireland. In February 2012, McClean received international clearance from FIFA which made him eligible to play for the Republic. 103 caps later he ended his international career at the Aviva, summing up his feelings by saying, “I lived a dream”. No bans, thank God. I wonder did he win a GAA medal playing Gaelic football with the Seán Dolans GAC when he was a garsún? If so, I hope he got the medal and did not have to wait 100 years like Jimmy Birmingham.

Jordan eyes Paris prize Killarney Valley AC man Jordan Lee is back from injury and raring to go for 2024 Killarney high jumper Jordan Lee says he feels like a “caged animal” as he prepares for a 2024 season that will hopefully include the Paralympic Games in Paris. Lee had to endure a scaled back campaign this year as he recuperated following the ankle ligament injury he sustained in November 2022, but he now feels as though he’s ready to compete on a global stage. “The recovery was really good and physically I’m feeling great. I’m just looking forward to starting the season now. I only competed twice this year so I feel like a caged animal in a sense, I just want to really get going. “It’s going to be a hectic year. The Olympics are in August and there are a lot competitions that we need to do before that and criteria that needs to be met. My first competition is on January 27 in Dublin. My first three competitions are in Ireland on successive weekends and my goal is to achieve the high performance standard for Paris pretty quickly. “Then it will be about gearing up for the World Championships in Japan in May. I want to get that exposure to international competition because you can’t really replicate the feeling of competing internationally.” Reaching that high performance standard is the key for Lee in 2024. If he fails to do so his Paralympic dream will fade away, but he believes he’s on track to make it happen.

“Trying to hit these objectives and targets is really, really difficult. It’s about having the confidence and being in the right condition to do it. Something that has gone against me is the fact that I wasn’t at the World Champs this year because of my injury. I decided to focus on my recovery and make sure I was right for 2024. There was a bit of a risk involved but me and my team felt we were going to be in good enough shape to achieve the required standards next year anyway. “I’m aiming to get that high performance standard in my first three comps early in 2024, which I feel is something I will definitely do. Overall, I’m feeling confident. I’m going to be jumping well next year. That’s for sure.” The Kerry native, who this year signed a deal with global sports brand Puma, is looking forward to the Killarney Valley AC awards night which takes place on December 10 at the Great Southern Hotel. In addition to honouring Lee’s clubmates for their many achievements in 2023, the club will be screening a documentary about Lee on the night. Filmed by Pep Talk in the buildup to the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, the hour-long movie is called ‘Man on a Mission’. The screening itself is free but the club will be accepting donations with proceeds going to the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit.

Overall, I’m feeling confident. I’m going to be jumping well next year. That’s for sure

SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic U17 NATIONAL CUP: Round 3. Johnstown FC 1-1 Killarney Athletic. Johnstown win on penalties. Not to be for the lads in Navan but it wasn’t for a lack of effort. To a man, every one of them put in a massive shift over 110 minutes of football and into penalties. We were slow out of the blocks, understandable after a long bus trip, and Johnstown took advantage to score within 2 minutes. It took us about 10 minutes to get going and we went on to dominate much of the chances for the remainder of the half with Luke scoring a header just before half time. Second half started as the first finished with us on top, but Johnstown did have spells in the second half where they had us pinned back and looked dangerous also. Nothing to separate the sides at full time so we progressed to extra time. We’d the ball in the net in the first additional period of extra time which was ruled out for offside. It looked very tight where I was standing but in fairness the ref is doing his best without the aid of linesmen. We’d a few unlucky efforts throughout extra time but couldn’t get the winner. Onto the lottery of penalties and unfortunately things didn’t go our way but that’s life. Last week we got something out of a game we didn’t really deserve, and this week is the opposite. Extremely proud of all the lads and can’t single out anyone as it was a great collective effort. Congratulations to Johnstown and best of luck in the next round. They’re a good footballing side. We’ll dust ourselves off and come back ready for our next challenge. U12 DIVISION 1: Fenit 4 Killarney Athletic B 1. Goalscorer: Freddie Glinwood. The U12B boys put in a good performance on the day but came up short against a Fenit side strong in all parts of the pitch. A lot of positives to take away, the second half being very tightly contested. Thanks to Fenit for the sporting game. U12 DIVISION 2: Athletic 5 Iveragh 0. Goalscorers: Harry Randles x 2, Mark Clifford, Ethene Colaco, OG. Following a very competitive game the lads came away with an excellent victory. Some lovely football was played and overall a great team performance. Thanks to Iveragh for a sporting game and best of luck to them for the rest of the season. U13 GIRLS PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 4-1 Iveragh Utd. Ella Crowley, Lillian Slattery, Millie McSweeney. Fantastic performance by our young Blues. U15 GIRLS PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 2-4 St Brendan’s Park. Kelsey Cummins, Roxana Wawro. Fantastic Performance by our Girls. U12S NATIONAL CUP: Caherdavin 2-1 Killarney Athletic. Sean Quill. Our U12 boys had a heartbreaking loss in the very last minute of the game to exit the 4th round of the National cup today

against a strong Caherdavin side from Limerick city. The boys were the better team in the first half and went up 1-0 from a well worked goal from Sean Quill. Mark Doonan played a wonderful assist for the goal. The lads gave up a cheap goal minutes after that and the game was drawn 1-1 at halftime. The second half was a battle back and forth. The home team scored a last-minute goal to take the victory. Our lads were heartbroken, but we are very proud of each and every one of the lads who fought hard and represented Athletic well. Proud of all the boys today. Well done lads! Man of the match Jack Doyle.

MEK Galaxy GIRLS: U15 Girls MEK Galaxy 1-1Listowel Celtic. If ever you wanted to see a game with grit, hard work & determination, this was it. Only 11 players, heavy pitch and a well-oiled opposition would have you think it was going to go one way. And it looked it from the refs whistle. Listowel must have created at least 2 dozen chances. But our GK, Clodagh Quirke had a different idea. She was outstanding, and that's an understate-

ment. But she didn’t just get the point on her own. The work rate by the 10 outfield players was fantastic. 1-0 down early in the game made it difficult. But we fought, stayed in the game and in the 2nd half with about 13 min to go, Fleur O'Neill broke over a Listowel line and lobbed the goalie. It took a lifetime to hit the back of the net. But if finally did. It was all Listowel again. They pushed and pressured us. But we stood strong to earn the first point of the season. POTM We would say that opposition would agree, Clodagh Quirke in goal was a different level. Scorer: Fleur O'Neill. BOYS: Under 14 Division 1 MEK Galaxy 1-1 Listowel Celtic. A great match and a great team effort unlucky not to get the win well done to all the boys. MEK Goal scored by Cade Jameson. Under 12 Boys National Trophy MEK Galaxy 2 - 1 Avenue United (Clare) AET FT 0-0. A humdinger of a cup tie with MEK having to wait until the first period of extra time to get the 2 goals their play deserved. Avenue hit back with a well taken penalty in the second period of extra time, making for a nervous last few minutes for MEK. This one went right down to the wire with Avenue testing the crossbar in the scramble from a last minute corner. MEK held firm to see it out for a well deserved win. Scorer for MEK: Oisin Bevan 2.

Kerry Schoolboys/ Girls League U14 BOYS NATIONAL TROPHY: Aisling Annacotty B 0-4 Inter Kenmare. Inter Kenmare U14 boys made the journey to Aisling Annacotty in Limerick City Saturday to take on their U14 team in the National Trophy round 3. After 5 mins and some pressure Kenmare changed their system and therefore became more attack minded. This settled them and they started to play some excellent football. Kenmare on the wings with Jimmy Mc Gann caused big problems for their fullbacks and it wasn’t long when one of moves saw Kenmare combine for a low cross that went across the goal and there was the man Jimmy McCann to slot the ball home. Aisling Annacotty played impressive one touch football and had a few chances, but Kenmare’s Goalie was excellent. With 10 mins before half time the ball was bouncing on the edge of their box when Ronan Hussey unleashed a volley that went in over the keepers head. That put Inter Kenmare 2:0 at half time. Aisling Annacotty pushed in the 2nd half, but Kenmare were stout in defence Kenmare combined on the left and Matthew Miles lobbed the keeper but as it was allegedly heading in the net the striker instinct of Ronan Hussey tapped it in first. Kenmare were able to relax for the last 10 mins as they soaked up the pressure from Aisling An-

nacotty and broke on the wings. Jimmy Mc Gann again got inside the fullback and was callously cut down for a penalty. Tony Desmond their usual penalty taker handed the ball to Ronan Hussey who slotted home the penalty for his Hattrick. Well done Kenmare who came out on top. U15 GIRLS LEAGUE: MEK Galaxy 1-1 Listowel Celtic Scorer: Fleur O'Neill. If ever you wanted to see a game with grit, hard work & determination, this was it. Only 11 players, heavy pitch and a well-oiled opposition would have you think it was going to go one way. And it looked it from the ref’s whistle. Listowel must have created at least 2 dozen chances.
