TG4 poll puts Michael Healy-Rae in pole position

Michael Healy-Rae is on course to get the highest vote in the country in the general election as he exceeds the quota by 10 percent in TG4 Kerry constituency poll, ensuring a seat for Danny Healy-Rae too.

As the county prepares to cast their votes on Friday, an Ipsos poll commissioned by TG4 shows Michael Healy-Rae as a certainty to retain his seat. The three other seats will go to each of the three main parties, one each for Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Sinn Féin.

The results of a TG4 / Ipsos B&A constituency poll for Kerry revealed on Nuacht

TG4 this week show that Michael Healy Rae will receive a whopping 27% of the vote putting him far ahead of any other candidate, and he will be amongst the highest vote getters in the whole country on Friday.

His brother Danny Healy-Rae comes in fifth on 10 per cent. Michael’s surplus of almost 40 per cent according to this poll

will transfer to Danny, guaranteeing both Healy-Raes a return to the Dáil.

FIVE SEATS

The Kerry constituency is a five-seater, with a quota of 17 percent.

Outgoing Minister for Education Norma Foley polls second on 14 per cent, and with transfers from the other Fianna Fáil candidates, Michael Cahill (on 7 per cent) and Linda Gordon Kelleher (on 3 per cent) she will retain her seat. The combined Fianna Fáil vote is ahead of its 2020 tally, which is a good performance given that John Brassil has retired. Brendan Griffin is not running in this

election and is replaced on the Fine Gael ticket by Billy O’Shea. The newcomer is polling well on 14 per cent, although the Fine Gael vote appears to be down marginally in Kerry. The two main government parties are transferring well to each other even across geographical lines. Sinn Féin’s Pa Daly is on 12 per cent with running mate Stephanie O’Shea on 3 per cent, giving Sinn Féin a combined 15 per cent in Kerry, and not quite a quota. Similar to Fine Gael, the party vote appears to be slightly lower this time but they are holding their own in Kerry.

The Labour Party, which held a seat in Kerry for decade, are performing poorly at 2% of the poll.

METHODOLOGY

This TG4/Ipsos B&A poll was conducted on Friday and Saturday of last week (November 22 and 23 ), one week before election day. A sample of 521 attaches a margin of error of about plus or minus four percentage points.

Other candidates are polling at 2% or less.

Bookmakers predict intense battle for Kerry's fifth seat

The race for the fifth and final seat in Kerry’s upcoming election is shaping up to be a dramatic showdown, with bookmakers and the recent TG4 poll painting slightly different pictures.

According to Paddy Power, the Healy-Rae brothers are widely expected to dominate

the early count, with Michael Healy-Rae a near-certainty at odds of 1/200 and Danny Healy-Rae also strongly favoured at 1/20. The duo is likely to secure the first and second seats, with Danny benefiting from transfers from his brother's overflowing surplus.

Fianna Fáil's Norma Foley and Sinn Féin's

Pa Daly are strongly positioned for the third and fourth seats, with odds of 1/3 and 1/8, respectively. However, attention now turns to the fight for the fifth seat.

Fine Gael’s Billy O’Shea has odds of 6/5, making him a strong contender for the final seat. Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil's Michael

Cahill, priced at 1/3 by Paddy Power, could pose a significant challenge if he attracts enough transfers from his party’s base. If TG4’s polling proves accurate, O’Shea could be on track for success. However, as bookmakers like Paddy Power suggest, unpredictable transfer patterns could lead to a surprise contender emerging.

Fatal train incident Grady calls for increased Mental Health funding

A serious incident occurred on Tuesday morning, November 26, resulting in the suspension of Irish Rail services between Tralee and Mallow.

Emergency services were called to the scene after a person was struck by a train and was fatally injured near the Minish

level crossing.

The incident, which took place around 10:30am, led to significant disruptions on the rail line.

Iarnród Éireann confirmed that the 9am Cork-Tralee service remained at the location for a number of hours.

Services between Tralee and Mallow were suspended for most of the day.

Local councillor, Martin Grady, has called for increased funding and resources for mental health services in Kerry. Speaking at a recent meeting of Kerry County Council, Grady highlighted the urgent need for additional support in this area.

Quoting a major EU-wide survey, Grady stated, “Irish people experience the highest level of difficulty in accessing mental health services among citizens of the 27 European Union member states.” He further emphasised the World Health Organization’s recommendation to allocate 10% of health budgets to mental health services, while Ireland currently allocates only 5%.

Grady expressed deep concern about the current state of mental health services in Kerry, citing staffing shortages, lack of support staff, and limited rehabilitation options. He warned that patients are suffering due to these issues and are being

discharged prematurely.

The council passed a motion calling on the Ministers for Health and Public Expenditure to address these concerns and increase funding for mental health services in Kerry.

Only two Kerry GAA clubs won the award.

GAA President Jarlath Burns, who presented Dr Crokes with their award at the event, applauded the clubs leading the sustainability charge for the GAA.

“Green Clubs are reinforcing our social leadership, improving their facilities, and helping ensure a better future for their communities. The breadth of initiatives being celebrated here today, spanning energy, waste, water, biodiversity, and travel, speaks volumes about the innovative and community-focused spirit of our clubs. The diversity of these projects demonstrates how clubs are finding creative ways to address local challenges while contributing to a national movement,” he said.

Eoin Brosnan, former Kerry All-Ireland winner and Cathaoirleach of Dr Crokes,

accepted the award on behalf of the club. He said: “All in Dr Crokes are delighted with the recent success of the club in the Green Club awards. As well as excelling on the playing field the club has been at the forefront of the GAA’s efforts to promote sustainability whilst educating the club members on the importance of this. The committee under the stewardship

of Éamonn Fitzgerald has been carrying out great work around the club grounds improving the visitor experience for all.

To be one of only two Kerry clubs to have received this award is a testament to the work of Dr Crokes’ Green Committee. While the award has been great to receive I know the committee has future plans to improve our club further.”

It has been a busy year for Dr Crokes’

Green Club committee, Éamonn Fitzgerald, Healthy Club Officer, Niall Keogh, Killarney Biodiversity winner, Dan Kelleher, Gene O’Doherty, Micheál Fitzgerald, Sinéad O’Mara and Peter O’Toole who created projects in the five criteria needed to win the award: Waste/Litter, Transport, Energy, Biodiversity, and Water which included partnering and supporting the innovative Killarney Coffee Cup initiative and progressing it by designing and producing the bespoke Crokes Coffee Cup.

A woman who dedicated much of her life to ensuring Killarney was a special place to live in and visit every Christmas is being remembered in the town in a very special way this festive season.

The feature star on the spectacular Tree of Light in Killarney takes on an extra special meaning this year as it will be dedicated to the late Rena Kennelly, the gifted artist who designed and created the magnificent Christmas crib, seen in St Mary’s Cathedral for over 50 years. She had been at the helm of that project every Christmas season since the Church was refurbished in the 1970s and her work was created using life-sizes figures, a striking stable full of animals, an artificial lake, fir trees and moss which she sourced herself.

Fittingly, she also helped create the state-of-the-art new crib – designed for a new generation – which was unveiled last year, and she was responsible for the design of the wonderfully atmospheric sacred space in the cathedral.

Rena, who passed away last March, lived in Aghadoe, Killarney and formerly at Cleeny, Killarney and Ballymullen, Tralee.

For her incredible dedication, she received the coveted Benemerenti Medal in August 2022 which is the highest honour Pope Francis can bestow on a person for services to the Church. She was also honoured with a civic award by Kerry County Council.

Rena worked in her earlier years as a nurse in Scotland before she met the dashing Colm Kennelly, a Trinity graduate and a fine footballer who was the youngest member of the Kerry team that won the 1953 All-Ireland.

Colm then worked as a civil engineer for the ESB in Tralee and affairs of the heart

Predeceased by Colm, Rena is mum to daughters Shirley and Kate and son Mark.

Killarney duo spread

Christmas cheer for London charity

Two Killarney women have joined forces to spread festive cheer and support a worthy cause.

Aghadoe’s Tara Cronin, Fundraising and Events Manager at icap, a London-based charity offering mental health services to the Irish community in Britain, and Margaret Looney, a local artist, have collaborated to create a stunning collection of Christmas cards.

“On a recent trip to Killarney, I took the opportunity to visit the Killarney market and came across Margaret Looney’s stall,” said Cronin. “I was struck by her beautiful cards and had the idea to collaborate on a collection for icap. Margaret was incredibly enthusiastic about the

project, and the result is a stunning set of cards that perfectly capture the spirit of Christmas.”

Looney’s artwork adorns each card, capturing the essence of an Irish Christmas with its warm colours. One card even features a festive scene from Killarney.

Looney added, “I have recently decided to develop my hobby into a small business. I’m a local Killarney artist. As you will see from my paintings, I didn’t have to travel far to get my inspiration. With a passion for capturing local landscapes and landmark buildings which there is abundance of in Killarney, I enjoy putting my brush to the canvas to make my creations. “Rena was a wonderfully creative and gifted woman and we all saw her remarkable work in the cathedral every year,” he said.

Scoil Bhríde, Loreto holds ‘election’ in democracy lesson

While many schools in the Killarney will be closed on Friday to serve as polling stations for the general election, Scoil Bhríde, Loreto is buzzing with its own democratic excitement.

Instead of adults casting ballots, pupils are taking part in their own school-wide general election, complete with larger-than-life candidates like Sonic (Fine Gael), The Hulk (Green Party), Spiderman (Social Democrats), and Homer Simpson (Independent).

The initiative, led by teacher Pádraig O’Sullivan, turns the real-life election day into an engaging educational experience. “The children in my class are acting as campaign managers, working hard to get their candidates elected,” said Mr. O’Sullivan. “They’ve created posters, badges, persuasive manifestos, and catchy slo-

gans to win over the electorate, which even includes the teachers. It’s not just a great learning opportunity—it’s also a lot of fun.”

Throughout the day, the school has been filled with energy as pupils campaign, vote, and eagerly await the results. All candidates have run impressive campaigns, making it a tight race for the five coveted seats in the Scoil Bhríde Dáil.

“It’s an experience the children will remember, and it’s teaching them valuable lessons about the democratic process,” Mr. O’Sullivan added.

A cheque presentation took place on Wednesday night at The Village Inn, Kilcummin, to mark the success of the second Annual Tractor Run. The event, held on November 17, raised an impressive €7,238.38, all of which will be donated to the Kerry Cancer Support Group. Kerry Airport funding warning

Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has issued a stark warning about the future of Kerry Airport, highlighting a potential funding cliff-edge in 2027.

Ní Mhurchú has urged the Irish government to seize a unique opportunity to significantly invest in Kerry Airport before EU state aid rules for regional airports expire on April 4, 2027.

"We need to be more ambitious about our plans for Kerry Airport," she said. "We have a golden opportunity to dramatically upscale our investment and position it as a major player in Irish aviation."

The MEP believes that Kerry Airport, with its current passenger numbers nearing half a million, is well-positioned

to alleviate some of the pressure on Dublin Airport, which currently handles the majority of Ireland's air traffic.

"Forty percent of passengers flying into Dublin ultimately travel outside the capital," Ní Mhurchú added. "This presents a clear opportunity for regional airports like Kerry to attract more passengers and routes."

Ní Mhurchú plans to raise this issue with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to advocate for increased investment and support for regional airports like Kerry.

She highlighted the importance of regional airports to Ireland's economy.

"Our airports are critical to our success as an island nation. Kerry Airport is a vital piece of infrastructure for the growth of the Southwest region,” she said.

Killarney Sports Centre to host election count

Ger Healy Memorial Tractor Run raises €6,300 for LGFA

Killarney Valley Vintage and Classic Club presented a cheque to the Healy family and Kilcummin LGFA, following the successful ‘Ger Healy Memorial Tractor Run’ held on October 27.

The event, organised to honour the memory of Ger Healy, a popular member of the Kilcummin community, drew a large turnout of tractors and generous donations from the public.

The tractor run was a collaborative effort between the Killarney Valley Classic and

Vintage Club and the Kilcummin Ladies Gaelic Football Association.

Ger was a strong supporter of women’s football, and the event aimed to honour his legacy.

It was a resounding success, raising €6,300. This generous donation will go towards supporting the Kilcummin LGFA and providing assistance to the Healy family.

The club expressed their gratitude to everyone who contributed to the event’s success, including the participants, volunteers, and donors.

Billy O’Shea urges action on Pretty Polly site

Fine Gael General Election candidate for Kerry, Billy O’Shea, has called for action on the development of the Pretty Polly site in Killarney.

He also highlighted the need for improved connectivity between the town’s train and bus stations to enhance local infrastructure and opportunities.

results.

After the polls close on Friday night, ballot boxes will be transported to the count centre. However, the counting process will not begin until Saturday morning

Traffic delays are anticipated on the Killarney bypass throughout the weekend, with local authorities urging motorists to plan their journeys accordingly.

“The Pretty Polly site has been sitting idle for far too long,” said O’Shea. “We’re talking about a location that once provided employment for thousands and still holds enormous potential. The proposal to establish a hospitality and culinary college there is a game-changer, not just for Killarney but for the entire region.”

“This isn’t just about creating jobs on-site; it’s about boosting the local economy, attracting more businesses, and elevating Killarney as a hub for education and tourism. Training in areas like green tech and renewable energy is exactly what Kerry needs to remain competitive and prepare

for the future.”

“For a town as vibrant as Killarney, the lack of a proper link between the train and bus stations is unacceptable. This affects residents, businesses, and the tourism sector. If we’re serious about connectivity and supporting sustainable travel, this issue must be addressed as a priority.”

Brian McCarthy receives Killarney’s highest honour

Receiving major national and international awards, in recognition of his remarkable achievements in business, has been part and parcel of Brian McCarthy’s busy life but the latest honour, bestowed on him in Killarney on Thursday afternoon, is one he said he will really cherish.

The founder of financial services giant Fexco has become the latest recipient of the prestigious Order of Inisfallen award which recognises outstanding contributions to the economic development of Killarney, Kerry and its tourism industry. Mr McCarthy worked with AIB in Killorglin until 1981 before circumstances – in the form of a bank strike – saw him identify a huge opening in foreign exchange. That initial very small scale operation, catering for the currency swap needs of visitors on the streets of Killorglin, quickly grew to great heights and it led to the foundation of a dynamic financial services company that now employs more than 2,800 people worldwide.

At the Order of Inisfallen investiture at Muckross House, Mr McCarthy was formally presented with the award – a special pin and framed scroll – by Mayor

of Killarney Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, who pointed out that it is the most prestigious honour Killarney can bestow.

“There is no more deserving recipient of the Order of Inisfallen than Brian McCarthy, who is acknowledged worldwide as a prominent, dynamic and successful business leader,” she said.

The mayor said he has demonstrated incredible professional and entrepreneurial abilities, instilled confidence within Ireland's business community and played a pivotal role in fostering job growth and economic progress in Kerry and in the country.

“The most impressive thing of all is that, despite the incredible success, Brian McCarthy is still the same humble, genuine and compassionate man today that he was all those years ago when he first dipped his toe into the mainly unchar-

tered territory that was the foreign exchange business.

“Success hasn’t changed him one iota –and that’s the true sign of a great man,” Mayor Healy-Rae said.

The Order of Inisfallen awards scheme is a joint initiative between Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Kerry County Council. It was established in 2005 to recognise outstanding contributions by people to the economic development of the town, the county and its tourism industry. Those selected for the honour are invested as Members of the Order of Inisfallen.

The 17 previous recipients include Charles, the King of England, former Taoiseach Enda Kenny, actor Michael Fassbender, entertainer Daniel O’Donnell, industrialist Isolde Liebherr and business personalities Margaret O’Donoghue, Donal Ring and Micheál O’Donoghue.

Other speakers at the award presentation, at which businesswoman Geraldine Rosney was the MC, included the outgoing Chairman of the Muckross House Trustees, Marcus Treacy, and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce

Co-President Johnny McGuire, who described Brian McCarthy as one of the greatest entrepreneurs and innovators this country has ever produced.

“Brian is very deserving of this recognition and those of us that have watched his remarkable entrepreneurial spirit come to the fore over the past four decades and more know how worthy he is of every success that comes his way,” Mr McGuire remarked.

1 million Ukrainians left without power after energy attacks

Russian missile strikes this week disrupted power for hundreds of thousands across Ukraine, with officials warning of a concentrated assault on the nation’s energy infrastructure.

Lviv region’s governor, Maksym Kozytskyi, reported on social media that 523,000 people were without electricity. In the Rivne region, 280,000 subscribers were cut off, while 215,000 faced outages in the Volyn region.

Energy Minister German Galushchenko confirmed that Ukraine's power infrastructure is under "massive enemy attack" following a countrywide air raid alert. "Attacks on energy facilities are

taking place across Ukraine," he stated on Facebook, as temperatures plummeted to near freezing.

National grid operator Ukrenergo announced emergency power cuts in response, with blackouts reported in Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and Donetsk. Ukraine's military issued air raid alerts across the country, warning of missiles heading for Kharkiv, Odesa, and eight other regions.

In Kharkiv, three strikes hit the city’s Kyivskyi district, though no casualties were reported, according to regional head Oleg Synegubov. Meanwhile, explosions were reported in Lutsk, northwest Ukraine, as Mayor Igor Pol-

ishchuk noted fresh attacks on the city. The escalating strikes add to civilian hardships, with UN official Rosemary DiCarlo warning this winter could be the "harshest since the war began." Russian targeting of Ukraine's energy infrastructure has intensified, threatening millions with cold and darkness.

UK Parliament divided over assisted dying bill

The UK Parliament faces a pivotal vote on the controversial Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) bill, which proposes granting terminally ill adults in England and Wales the right to die on their own terms. Introduced by Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, this landmark legislation has sparked unlikely alliances and sharp divisions across party lines and within Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Cabinet.

The issue has ignited intense debate, with medical experts weighing in on both sides. While a recent YouGov poll shows 73% of Britons support assisted dying, 19% express concern about implementing effective safeguards.

Following similar discussions in Ireland, Scotland, and France, the UK joins a growing European trend addressing this deeply personal and ethical issue. MPs will cast a free vote on this matter of conscience on Friday.

Study finds cash-in-hand on the rise in hospitality

A new study has revealed an increase in cash-in-hand payments to staff within the hotel and catering industry.

Excel Recruitment's 2025 Salary Guide for the hospitality sector indicates that some businesses, struggling to manage their budgets, have resorted to paying workers in cash.

"By adopting cash-in-hand payments, some establishments risk fuelling black market activity, creating challenges for competitors who don’t use this practice as competition for staff intensifies," the

report warns.

The sector is under increasing financial pressure as the minimum wage is set to rise to €13.50 per hour in January 2025, alongside other costs such as increased sick pay, PRSI contributions, and pension obligations.

The guide anticipates noticeable wage increases for entry-level and supervisory roles in 2025, while management salaries are expected to remain largely stable. Additionally, the report highlights a growing reliance on staffing agencies and automation as businesses strive to

balance rising costs with maintaining customer satisfaction.

"The hospitality industry is facing a critical moment," said Shane McLave, Managing Director at Excel Recruitment.

"With an estimated 600 to 700 hospitality venues closing in the past year, it’s no wonder that many in the sector are deeply concerned about its future sustainability," he noted.

"Businesses are being forced to make tough choices to stay afloat, which has serious implications for both employees and customers," added Mr. McLave.

Lockdowns and protests: What’s going on in Pakistan?

Protests began on Sunday, with a convoy traveling from Peshawar as part of a “long march” to Islamabad, roughly 180 kilometers (110 miles) away. The demonstration, led by Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi and party leader Ali Amin Gandapur, aimed to stage a sit-in near parliament at D-Chowk.

Defying security lockdowns and rally bans, protesters reached Islamabad’s outskirts on Monday. Along the way, police used tear gas and set up barriers with shipping containers to slow the march. Footage showed fires along the highway, including a police post in flames. Reports indicated that 22 police vehicles were set ablaze near Islamabad and in Punjab province.

Violence escalated on Tuesday, with at least six people, including four security officials, reportedly killed. Some deaths occurred when a car collided with individuals during the protests, according to medical sources. By morning, demonstrators had breached city boundaries, reaching D-Chowk, where soldiers were stationed outside key government buildings.

Pakistani security forces conducted a nighttime operation on Tuesday to disperse thousands of demonstrators rallying in Islamabad in support of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned. The protest escalated after participants breached barricades and gathered near the capital, demanding Khan’s release.

The government had implemented strict security measures, including internet shutdowns, roadblocks, and a lockdown in key areas to deter crowds from reaching Islamabad. Imran Khan had previously called on his followers to march toward the parliament.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that protesters would be allowed to remain on the outskirts of the city but issued a stern warning against entering its central areas, promising severe action if boundaries were crossed.

Despite these warnings, protesters advanced to Islamabad’s high-security red zone, clashing with law enforcement. Tear gas was deployed, and reports emerged of multiple arrests and casualties. Most fatalities were reportedly from the security forces.

Regulator urges public not to purchase Ozempic online

More than 430 websites selling medicines linked to Ozempic have been shut down or altered by the Irish Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) so far this year, reflecting a significant rise in illegal online sales.

This figure is more than double the number of websites targeted last year, highlighting a growing demand for the drug among individuals seeking unregulated access.

Ozempic, containing the active ingredient semaglutide, is used to manage blood sugar and insulin levels for type 2 diabetes patients and as an appetite suppressant for those with obesity. It can be administered via injection or taken orally. The rise in illegal online sales is attributed to people without prescriptions seeking semaglutide and similar drugs for weight loss, with unregulated sellers exploiting this demand.

The HPRA has expressed concern over the growing availability of counterfeit and illegal versions of the drug in Ireland. In the past year, authorities have seized

1,401 illegal products marketed as Ozempic or similar brands, a dramatic increase compared to 568 units seized in 2023 and just 40 in 2022.

The confiscated items include tablets and pens branded as popular semaglutide products or “generic” versions.

Consumers are being urged to avoid purchasing these medicines online, as counterfeit products may contain harmful substances or incorrect dosages, posing serious health risks.

The HPRA has ramped up unannounced inspections at suspected facilities and issued warnings across the EU, mirroring similar trends in the UK, US, and Australia.

Some illegal sellers in Ireland have operated through social media platforms and independent websites.

Gráinne Power, the HPRA’s Director of Compliance, described the surge in fake Ozempic products as “alarming” and emphasised the dangers of unregulated medicines, warning that they could jeopardize both user safety and treatment effectiveness.

Australia approve bill to ban under 16’s from social platforms

Australia’s House of Representatives has approved a bill aimed at barring children under 16 from accessing social media platforms, setting the stage for the Senate to consider finalising what could become a groundbreaking law.

The legislation, supported by major political parties, targets platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X, and Instagram. It includes penalties of up to 50 million Australian dollars (£26 million) for systemic failures to block underage users. The House passed the measure with 102 votes in favour and 13 against.

If enacted, platforms would have a year to develop methods to enforce age re-

strictions before facing potential fines.

Opposition lawmaker Dan Tehan noted that the government had agreed to Senate amendments aimed at strengthening privacy protections. The bill would prohibit platforms from requiring government-issued identification, such as passports or driver’s licenses, or using a government-run digital ID system.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland stated that the Senate would take up the legislation later on Wednesday. Bipartisan backing ensures a strong likelihood of the bill passing the Senate, where no party holds a majority.

Independent lawmakers expressed the strongest opposition during debates, voicing concerns about the legislation being rushed, ineffective, and poten-

tially creating privacy risks. Critics also argued that the proposal undermines parental authority, isolates children, and could push young users toward unsafe online spaces, such as the dark web.

Independent MP Zoe Daniel criticised the measure as performative, asserting it would fail to address the core harms of social media. “The real purpose of this legislation is to reassure parents and voters that action is being taken,” she said, adding, “No other country wants to adopt this approach, and there’s a reason for that.”

Social media platforms had called for delaying the vote until mid-2024, after a government evaluation of age verification technologies could inform enforcement strategies.

Leaving Cert student Grace Foley has secured first place in the Regional Heat, marking the third consecutive year that a KCC student has topped the competition.

Grace’s speech on the topic of ’People & Human Rights’ impressed the judges with its powerful message, inspired by

Marie Curie’s quote, “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less,”

Tara O’Shea, Grace’s mentor and KCC teacher said: "We spend a lot of time preparing and practicing for this event, and Grace delivered a truly outstanding performance. We are thrilled for her success.”

Grace advances to the next stage of the competition, where she will face even tougher competition from across the country.

Annual Winter Solstice on the Paps of Anú

A call from our ancient ancestors to celebrate the Winter Solstice on the sacred Paps of Anú mountain takes place on Saturday, December 21 with the kind permission of landowners Sean and Mary O’Donoghue.

Walkers will depart in darkness at 6.45am from Garries Bridge, the first bridge after St Agatha’s Church, Glenflesk on the Main Cork Road.

This year's chosen charity is Killarney Water Rescue - a voluntary team of dedicated people, whose mission is to respond, support and assist in search and rescue on a 24/7/365 basis. The crew members train on the Lakes of Killarney, practising navigation, emergency first aid, handson practice in boating skills, rope work, weather charts and rescue techniques. Kieran Caulfield Chairman of Killarney Water Rescue, said “We are absolutely delighted to be chosen as this year's charity, new equipment and training are key to us providing a service and availability 24/7. The Lakes of Killarney are magnificent, but as we know, the weather can turn unexpectedly. If we can make a difference through our voluntary service saving one kayaker or rescuing a swimmer in difficulty, then your donations will have made this happen.”

Carpooling is encouraged at the Kerry Way Inn, Glenflesk. Paddy Chauvet and staff will be baking scones and providing complimentary tea and coffee for all the early risers after the trek. Donations to

How to be in the right place at the right time all the time

BNI Kerry Chapter recently joined forces with the RDI Hub to demonstrate how being in the right place at the right time can change everything for businesses.

This unique collaboration brought together two dynamic organisations focused on fostering growth and connection for local businesses.

“The RDI Hub is an impressive facility, offering unparalleled support and guidance to its members,” said Anne Hannan, President of the BNI Kerry Chapter. “It was a privilege to host our weekly meeting at the Hub and invite their members to experience the power of referral-based marketing firsthand.”

BNI (Business Network International) operates on the philosophy of ‘Giver’s Gain’, creating structured opportunities for professionals to exchange referrals and grow their businesses.

Dan O’Donoghue of Asentiv Ireland South led a thought-provoking session for attendees, emphasising the distinction between casual networking and

the strategic approach of referral-based marketing.

“Ask anyone how they landed their biggest client or achieved their biggest breakthrough, and they’ll likely point to a connection made through someone they knew,” Dan explained. “BNI takes that process and makes it both proactive and predictable.”

Eoin Ferris from Sitecert, an RDI Hub member and former BNI Chapter member, echoed these sentiments: “I’ve seen firsthand the value BNI offers to businesses aiming to make those all-important connections. I was excited to help fellow RDI Hub residents explore how BNI could take their businesses to the next level.”

Megan Daly Tyrell, Business Development Manager of the RDI Hub expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. She said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to connect our members with the resources and expertise of BNI. We look forward to further partnerships that continue to bring value to our community.”

Killarney Water Rescue can be given on the morning at the Kerry Way Inn.

The long walk in darkness to the summit, has two strenuous inclines, leading to the Western Pap at 690 metres. At approximately 8.45am sunrise begins. John Lynch, whose family are neighbouring landowners, will perform an ancient ritual of placing a piece of holly into the Cairn on the summit. Then the craic begins with the finest musicians from Glenflesk, Derry and Rosie Healy and Michael MacGillycuddy, as John sets the pace for the Sliabh Luachra Polka. Mountaineer Donie Mulcahy and crew will guide the walkers to and from the summit.

These ancient sacred summits, ‘The Paps of Anú’, resemble a pair of breast-shaped hills known as ‘The Paps’ in the Derry Na Saggart Mountains close to the Cork/Kerry border. The Paps have long been associated with mythology, mysticism and majesty. The Goddess Anú represents all that is earthly, fertile, abundant and protective. It is compulsory to wear a head torch, a level of fitness is required. Proper walking boots and rain gear are advised. Guides will be on duty for a gear check before departure.

Extension to Churchtown burial ground begins

Councillor Michael Cahill has announced that work on the long-awaited extension to Churchtown Burial Ground in Beaufort is set to begin in the coming weeks.

The project will come as a relief to residents, who had faced mounting concerns over the lack of burial spaces in the parish

“The marking out of the extension is ready to go ahead very shortly. I fought long and hard for the people of Beaufort to ensure that the remains of their loved ones could continue to be interred in their home parish,” he said.

“There was much anxiety and stress felt by local residents as Churchtown ran out of space. Many people feared that the burial of deceased loved ones might have to take place outside of the parish.”

Cahill credited the resolution of the issue to collaborative efforts between Kerry County Council and local landowners, which he helped facilitate.

“I’m delighted that, as a result, agreement was reached and additional burial spaces will soon be available,” he added. “At last, people can rest easy on this issue in Beaufort.”

WRC champion Kalle Rovanperä makes appearance at Kelliher’s Toyota Garage

Double FIA World Rally Champion Kalle Rovanperä made a special appearance at Kelliher’s Toyota Garage in Tralee on Wednesday, ahead of his participation in the Killarney Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally.

Earlier this week TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team confirmed its driver line-up for the 2025 FIA World Rally Championship.

Rovanperä will return to a full-time campaign with the team, following a partial 2024 season, when he secured four wins from seven starts for the Japanese manufacture.

Wednesday’s visit to the Tralee dealership was his first public appearance since Monday’s announcement by the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team.

During his part-time season, Rovanperä broadened his motorsport experience, competing in various events, including the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux.

Rovanperä and co-driver Jonne Halttunen took four wins from seven starts in this year’s World Rally Championship and contributed to Toyota’s fourth Manufacturer’s World title in a row.

For the Killarney Historic Rally, he will take the wheel of a Toyota Starlet loaned by leading Irish national rally driver Jason Black.

The deal was pulled together by former WRC co-driver, Killarney man, Paul Nagle and current WRC co-driver, Tyrone man Aaron Johnston who navigates for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team’s Takamoto Katsuta.

Kelliher’s Toyota, the long-standing Toyota dealership in Kerry, is one of Rovanperä’s sponsors for the Killarney Historic

Rally.

The Tralee-based dealership offers a wide range of new Toyota vehicles, a diverse selection of used cars, and comprehensive aftersales services, including an award-winning body shop.

Managing Director Tim Kelliher said:

“We were thrilled to host Kalle ahead of the rally. His presence here is a huge boost for the event and for rally fans in Kerry. It’s an honour to showcase our Toyota dealership to one of the sport’s biggest stars.”

Other guests attending Wednesday’s included Kelliher’s Toyota brand ambassadors Paralympian Jordan Lee and Kerry footballer Paudie Clifford.

Rally fans will have another chance to meet the Finnish duo during a special meet-and-greet session in Killarney on Friday evening as part of the rally’s festivities.

The double World Rally Champions will attend an autograph signing session at Scruffy’s Nite Club on College St (note change of venue) at 6.15pm on Friday.

To meet the Finnish duo, fans will need to purchase an official RallyPak, which includes a poster of the Flying Finns

The meet and greet session takes place ahead of the ceremonial start at 7pm where the top 20 Historic and Modified cars and the top local crews will attend the pre-event celebration outside the Plaza Hotel.

He put his arms around you and raised you up to rest

His garden must be beautiful because he only takes the best.

For part of us went with you on the day God called you home.

Burns says Kerry exit was Jack’s call

Crokes man did not step away from panel as was reported at the time

Dr Crokes footballer Micheál Burns says he didn’t walk away from the Kerry panel in February of this year, clarifying in a podcast interview that he was told he was “surplus to requirements” by manager Jack O’Connor.

It was reported at the time that Burns had decided to leave the set-up as he was not satisfied with his role within the team. O’Connor himself told the media that: “There comes a time in all careers when you have to make a decision whether the effort is worth the potential reward. Micheál has come to that stage. He’s 27, and possibly didn’t feel he was getting the game time that was going to keep him happy and motivated. That leads to a discussion.”

However, speaking to former Laois player Colm Parkinson on the Smaller Fish podcast this week, Burns revealed that at a meeting at the Europe Hotel, the Kerry manager informed him he was no longer needed.

“I don’t think it’s any secret, I was more told I wasn’t wanted [rather] than leaving the panel,” the Killarney man said.

“It’s not really that important. Kerry is full of talent. A few people asked me at the time would I talk about it, but my loyalty would be to the lads inside there that I played with. It was a bad time of the season to be going out and talking about it. A few months down the line I’ve no problem saying I was more told that I was surplus to requirements than leaving the panel. Which is fine. That’s their decision and you have to live with that as well.”

Burns, who went on to spend the sum-

mer in Chicago before returning home and helping Crokes to win the Club and County Championships, admitted that being let go was tough to take.

“Look, without going into too much detail, he just said he didn’t see me having a role to play. No more words than that. I actually had the bag packed ready to go to training that evening and I got a call to meet him behind at the Europe and he just said it to me. I was in a bit of shock at the time so I probably didn’t say too much to him.

“It took a bit of time to adjust. I spent, I think, seven seasons in there so I was getting ready for training that evening and next thing I know I’m on the road home. Didn’t know what I was going at for the evening.

“It was tough but, look, these things happen. Like I said, you just get on with it.”

Burns and Dr Crokes will take on Loughmore Castleiney of Tipperary in the Munster Club final after defeating Rathgormack in the semi-final by 0-9 to 0-8 last weekend. The final is scheduled for next Sunday (December 8) at 1.30pm in Mallow.

Elsewhere, Firies booked their place in the Munster Junior final with a ninepoint victory over Cappagh of Limerick. Their provincial decider against Cork outfit Kilmurry will take place next Saturday (December 7) in Rathkeale.

Austin Stacks have also reached the Munster Intermediate final. They beat Kilshannig last weekend, setting up a showdown with Tipperary champions Aherlow on December 7.

Time to hit the unfollow button

Adam Moynihan asks if Conor McGregor’s passive social media followers know they are propping up a perpetrator of sexual assault

When Conor McGregor rose to prominence around a decade ago, I remember wondering if this guy was a pr*** or if he was acting the pr***. Turns out it was both.

After initially winning a lot of people over with his success in the cage and his braggadocious persona, the MMA fighter has since given us plenty of reasons to dislike him. Time and time again he has shown us who he really is: a violent clown with zero class and even less humility. This is a man who won RTÉ’s Irish Sportsperson of the Year award in 2016. Compared to other recent winners like Katie Taylor and Shane Lowry, he isn’t even worthy of the title ‘sportsperson’, never mind the rest.

Last Friday, Nikita Hand, who had claimed that McGregor raped her in a Dublin hotel in 2018, won her civil case against him. The High Court jury heard how she was left with brutal injuries and post traumatic stress disorder following

the incident. Hand showed remarkable courage to see this process out from start to finish despite facing a barrage of hate from McGregor’s fans and even threats to her personal safety. It was revealed after the trial concluded that her house had been broken into by armed and masked men who attacked her partner with a knife.

One might hope that the result of this case would finally convince any lingering McGregor supporters that this is not a man worthy of their adulation. Unfortunately, that doesn’t appear to be totally true.

Judging by social media, the Dubliner still commands a legion of mush-brained American fanboys who sadly are too ignorant to know any better. They think McGregor should be our president, our own version of Trump, typically oblivious to what the President of Ireland actually does, or the fact that the majority of us

are ashamed to share a nationality with the man.

McGregor also has the backing of angry, far-right losers here in Ireland, many of whom rallied behind him after he made despicable and dangerous comments at the time of the anti-immigration-fuelled Dublin riots in 2023.

And of course, there are people, mostly men, who simply don’t believe the victim. They never do. They see any allegation of rape against a celebrity as an attempted cash-grab, an argument which holds no water in this case as Hand unsuccessfully pushed for a criminal prosecution before going the civil route.

Whatever about these elements in society standing by their man – what would you expect from an ass but a kick? – many of us are helping to prop up McGregor without even knowing it.

He has over 47 million followers on Instagram - around 250 of the people

I’m following (mostly friends or at least acquaintances) currently are. I have no doubt that almost none of those people actually like McGregor, and certainly none would condone sexual assault. They simply followed him several years ago because he’s an Irish celebrity and they haven’t thought about it since the outcome of the trial, or if they have they don’t think it matters.

But as Reportd.ie (a platform for anonymously reporting sexual harassment) brilliantly argued via a viral social media post this past week, unfollowing McGregor can make a real difference.

“Taking the small step of unfollowing perpetrators like Conor McGregor actively shows that you don’t support this behaviour,” the post said.

Reportd suggest it is also worth unfollowing him on financial and algorithmic grounds.

“Continuing to follow McGregor means financially supporting him; it's estimated that he makes over €100,000 per sponsored Instagram post. Without engaged followers this projected number will dwindle.

“Mass unfollowing also teaches social media platforms' algorithms that users are not interested and therefore shows less of this content to other people.” So, yes, passively following McGregor on social media doesn’t necessarily mean anything. But actively unfollowing him can.

For the love of the Part 1 of Eamonn Fitzgerald’s in-depth interview with international basketball coach James Weldon

It was this time of the year in late November 1990, when darkness still enveloped the early-morning arrival of students to the Killarney Community College on New Road. The silence was punctuated by the one strange sound of a ball bouncing on the tarmacadam. One solitary garsún, a 1st year student, shooting for yet another basket. Run the tape on James Weldon.

Eamonn Fitzgerald: It is great to recall those moments, James, and congratulate you on your marvellous progress in basketball now as the Head Coach of the Irish women’s team. Let us track how a boy from Barleymount followed his dream.

James Weldon: It’s hard to believe that was 1990. Our school bus was always in early, and I loved to spend those times all alone practicing on the outdoor basketball court. Kieran Coffey had just about introduced us to basketball in the Two Mile school but when I went to Killarney Community College it really came alive for me. I was very fortunate that all sports were promoted in KCC and I took to basketball in a big way thanks to teacher Tom Looney in particular who encouraged me to get into coaching.

In my Leaving Cert year of 1995, I got the opportunity to coach the school team to an All-Ireland college success for 1st and 2nd year female students. It just went from there. That led to me making gradual steps with underage girls' teams in St Paul’s and this progressed to National League and Super League levels.

Emer Buckley was the driving force on that KCC team. She was interviewed for this column recently as a young woman who is now a top basketball referee at the highest level. She is surely that. She was a great player who really played on the edge, testing the rules. Now she has the role of implementing those same rules, going from poacher to gamekeeper. I have seen her refereeing the men's games at the highest levels and she is top-class. She’s also very involved in the mentoring programmes.

You played your club basketball with St Paul’s?

Yes, I was playing Division 1 at first and then Super League, enjoying it so much

until I did my cartilage. I was 25 then and during that year out I got heavily involved with Paul’s as a coach learning the ropes. In 2000 we entered a very young Killarney team which included Lynn Jones and she is still playing. What a great servant to basketball here locally. We had some great Killarney players and were also fortunate to sign the likes of Louise Galvin, who went on to achieve success in football and also in rugby. Another teacher, Ger Tarrant (Listowel), was coaching the Irish U18 women’s team, and he brought me in as an assistant doing odd bits and helping him out. He’s a great guy, and I still have great contact with him. He travelled out to Riga recently for our games with the Irish senior team. I took over coaching the Irish U18 women’s team in 2005. We had a very good Irish team in the 2007 European Championships. You were very successful with coaching the UL Huskies, too…

They had a good winning team but then went five years without much success so I was brought in to get them back on track. We didn’t do well in my first year and I thought I might be fired but then we went on an unbeaten run for 50 games. Intrinsically motivated, that was a special team and we won ten national titles in four years. The players were very committed, arriving 30 minutes before training to start their warmup off-court so they maximised the allowed timeslot on the court totally for tactical and technical improvements. I still keep in contact with them. So many of them travelled down for my mom’s and dad’s funerals.

When did you take over the Irish senior women’s team?

That would have been in 2018, but Covid struck after that and all games were cancelled. There was no Irish team involvement during the Covid years. Later just a few teams got together for tournaments in Luxembourg and I coached there. We took part in the European Championships for Small Nations and did well to make it to the final. It was strange as none of our players had played during Covid. Following this we progressed to compete in the Senior European Qualifiers at Riga. It is a big step up as we are ranked 86th in the world whereas France are ranked

second while Latvia and Israel are over 30 places ahead of us in the rankings. That is ongoing and we have games again next February. We played Latvia and Israel in those recent qualifiers. You were very busy on international duties when I spoke with you recently and it was a very sensitive time in the Middle East considering the volatile political situation, as we saw in the media.

It was a very difficult position for the team to be in. It’s terrible what’s going on in Gaza and Lebanon. There is so much destruction, suffering and death of so many people including the young innocent children.

And was there pressure put on to cancel the game versus Israel?

The draw paired us against Israel. FIBA insisted that the game would go ahead. If we hadn’t played the first game there was a fine of €80,000, and if we didn’t play again there was an extra €100,000 fine and a five-year ban from competition. The decision (to play) wasn’t taken lightly.

So, who made the tough decision?

It was the governing body of basketball’s decision who participates and who doesn’t, but they consulted regularly with myself, of course, and with the team as well.

It must have been very intimidating to play under such difficult circumstances considering the spin-off from the political situation.

This time (November 2024) was not as awkward as the previous time in February, which was intense. I must say this young team handled the situation very well. For a sport that doesn’t get much media attention I was very aware that there was intense pressure on the players. We kept a very tight ship and the situation was handled very sensitively for such a young group. When we sign up for competition that then becomes our focus. Some players were unavailable to travel for various reasons but the squad that travelled all bonded very well.

Did you feel under danger?

Not really to be honest. The Israelis are huge in their security. They always travel with special services and all that. Riga in Latvia was the venue, and it was

a home game for them, but once we were in the arena there was no danger as such. I concentrated on preparing the team for the game.

How is the team funded?

The big thing for me in my first two years was to secure sponsorship and in this aspect, John Fitzpatrick (Gotham Drywall, New York) has been a godsend. You would know John from Ballinskelligs who played with Kerry Vocational Schools in the All-Ireland Inter-County Colleges competitions. He invested heavily in the team and is also emotionally involved. He’s on the phone every week for updates just to see how we are doing.

Are there any potential Killarney players capable of making it to the top?

It’s great to see the local squad led by James Fleming back playing Super League. Rheanne O’Shea and young Leah McMahon are showing well which makes it easier for me just to drive down the road to see them in action, much easier than going to Cork or Dublin to watch players. That’s a very important part of my role as an international coach. I’m always seeing players in action or watching games on TV to keep my finger on the pulse. There’s a huge amount of work to be done in the periods between actual competitions. While we don’t have any Killarney players on the Irish team at the moment, the presence of a Killarney team in the Super League is a very positive step and can inspire the next generation of young players to succeed and progress to the top level.

It’s a big step up for James Fleming’s team this season…

Apart from their first match they have settled in very well. Liffey Celtics are the favourites to win this year but St Paul’s are doing well.

It must be difficult for you to get the Irish squad together as most of them are playing Super League with their clubs and you may well have to keep updated on Irish players who are in the USA. What happens when you get them in preparation for an international?

It’s quite similar to the schedule for the manager of the Irish soccer team with a short enough window to prepare.

game

Typically, I get the players on Sunday night/Monday morning after their club games. We train twice on Monday, twice on Tuesday and once on Wednesday. The game is on Thursday, and we return to training on Friday and Saturday before playing again on Sunday. It’s usually one home and one away game in the action-packed week with the Irish team. With a short window, it is vital to maximise your time, work on the transition offence and defence, and develop and plan the set plays. Basketball is becoming more and more about conceptual play as opposed to set plays. Last summer we were involved in the Small Nations tournament, and it was played over a week. It was easy to get them at weekends up to the tournament because they weren’t involved with their clubs during the summer. Last November we played France at home. That was a big step up as France went on to claim a silver medal at the Paris Olympics.

Then, in February, we played Israel in a stand-alone fixture at Riga. Looking ahead our schedule in February 2025 will be a Thursday game against France away and on Sunday it will be home against Latvia in Tallaght. We have Cyprus in June 2025. Then the cycle starts all over again. We have some players in the USA and colleges will not release them during term. We are seeing more Irish players going Stateside. It’s great to see Irish players accepted into the US colleges, but the downside is you may not have access to them for four years. We will only have them during the summer holidays.

Amy Mallon, my American-born first cousin, is the Head Coach at Drexel University and they are very successful.

I remember Amy playing for Ireland in Limerick. I was involved in Limerick at that time. (She was eligible to play for Ireland because her grandmother Mattie nee O’Sullivan was born near Sneem). At that time there were no restrictions on the number of passport players (non-Irish) you could use. Now you are only allowed one player over 16 with a passport. We have just one such player at present, Bridget Herlihy whose grandmother is from the Aran Islands and whose grandfather is from the Gaeltacht near Dingle. She is in college in Spain and playing at the top level over there.

TO BE CONTINUED

Read Part 2 of this interview next week. Why did Éamonn Fitzmaurice bring James into the Kerry team training sessions? How does a basketball coach see things differently from a GAA coach? What skills are transferrable, as shown by Liam McHale, Jayo Sherlock, Pat O’Shea, Kieran Donaghy and others?

That and more from local man James Weldon, living his dream in the game he loves so well.

SMALL TALK Matt McAuliffe

This week Adam Moynihan caught up with Killarney RFC captain Matt McAuliffe.

Hi Matt. Thanks for speaking to me. No bother, Adam.

How has the season been going so far?

Not too bad. We started off a bit slow but we’re getting going now. We’ve won our last two games so we’re on a bit of a roll.

What are the team’s goals for the rest of the campaign?

Our main goal is to try and get promoted up to Division 2 of the Munster Junior League and if we could pick up a cup along the way that would be a big plus as well.

I have some questions for you about your Killarney RFC teammates… You need one of them to convert a longrange drop-goal to save your life – who are you picking?

I’d have to pick Ciarán O’Brien. He’s a man of many talents.

Which teammate spends the most time in the gym?

Darren Enright.

Who’s the biggest joker in the dressing room?

Either Brendan Fuller or Declan Fuller. It must run in their family.

Which teammate would you want backing you up in a fight?

Alan Mulligan. I’d definitely be confident with him by my side.

Which teammate would you least like to get stuck in an elevator with?

Dion O’Neill. You never know what he’s going to do next.

If you could steal any of your team mates’ attributes, what would it be/ from whom?

I’d say Donnchadh Grealy’s speed and his ability to break the line. That would be very useful for me.

Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with?

In Killarney, Dave Howard or Ger Moynihan. I played with UL Bohs in Limerick and I’d have to say Evan O’Connell for them.

And the best player you’ve played against?

When we were under 18 we played Cobh Pirates and Edwin Edogbo of

Munster was playing for them. That was not fun.

What was the low point of your sporting life so far?

We had a very good team under 18 but the season was cut short due to Covid. That was disappointing.

ously Gaelic football, and I like watching the NBA and the darts around this time of year.

How’s the golf going? Not good. At all.

Are you watching a series at the moment?

I heard it was good… Ah it’s brilliant.

Which actor would play you in a movie about your life?

John Travolta when he was a young fella back in the day.

What’s your go-to pre-game song?

YOUTHS: National Cup Round 3 - Athletic 2-0 Duleek. A decision was made to move this fixture to Tralee after the relentless rainfall over night. Playing against the breeze in the first half, we got a great start with an early headed goal by Nathan Cronin from a corner. This spurred on Duleek and they were passing it better in the windy conditions. They had a few dangerous counter attacks from direct clearances which caused trouble. Thankfully Caolan Mitchell was his ever-reliable self and dealt with everything that came his way. We had a few chances of our own to extend our lead from Brian O’Shea, Luke Doolan and most notably when Jake Nash’s effort came back off the post and into the goalies hands. 1-0 at half time and still plenty of room for improvement. The heavens opened at the start of the second half and hasn’t stopped since. It was fairly miserable conditions to try and play football. In spite of this, we started getting more control of the game by passing short instead of rushing a long pass. 15 minutes in and we were 2-0 ahead when Nathan finished again from a corner. Duleek responded by pushing men further forward which resulted in a few chances from them but also a few chances for us from Luke, James Dempsey, Finan Blackwell and Dara O’Sullivan. No more goals before the final whistle blew to seal our place in the last 16 of this year’s National Cup. Man of the match is beyond question on this occasion, Nathan Cronin with a brace and a clean sheet. He has been playing some brilliant stuff this year. Special mention also for Fionn Daly and John Murphy who were powerful all game and especially near the end when we were under a lot of pressure to keep the 2-goal cushion. Thanks to the KDL for the use of their facility and also the referee and 2 linesmen who were very fair throughout. Safe journey home to Duleek who are a fine footballing side and played a very sporting game. We wish their club lots of success in the future.

Dr Crokes GAA

MUNSTER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 0:09 Rathgormack 0:08. Another Munster Club Final awaits us on December 8th after a narrow win over Rathgormack of Waterford on Sunday last. Playing against a gale force wind in the first half meant that we had to defend well and work hard to keep the scoreboard ticking over. With the win on their side, it was our opposition who opened the scoring in the second minute of play. One minute later Tony Brosnan levelled things through a free. With further points from Tony Brosnan and Micheal Burns we led 5 points to 3 points after the first quarter. Both teams swapped points, and we held our lead of two-point lead going in at the break, 0:07 to 0:05. Playing with the wind in the second half it took us 6 minutes to open the scoring from the boot of Micheal Burns, who finished the game with 4 points. Going into injury time we led 9 points to 7 points, so it was still all to play for. Rathgormack threatened a goal a number of times throughout the game, but it was Shane Murphy who got the better of them each time. The same was the story in the dying minutes of the game when he cleared a good Rathgormack effort on goal to ensure our place in the Munster Final against Loughmore Castleiney on December 8th.
