Full employment, minimum wage set to rise, but locals still feeling the pinch! Warning: This article does not come with the usual bells, whistles and Christmas cheer you would expect at this time of the year. | By Chris Davies So, jobs are aplenty, the minimum wage is set to increase in 2024 and yet according to our findings, locals are not too optimistic about the year ahead. Just 1 in 10 people reported that they are better off now than they were a year ago. Only 16% expect the economy to be in a better place this time next year and there seems to be widespread dissatisfaction with how the government are tackling key issues affecting our standard of living.
HASN’T EVERYTHING GONE SO EXPENSIVE?
If I got a euro for every time I heard this the over the past 12 months I certainly wouldn’t be feeling the pinch myself! Generally speaking, people do not like to talk about their personal finances but
people’s behaviour is changing under the current climate. We are so frustrated with the cost of everything we are venting at home, in the office, and even while out for dinner with friends. It is not a dig at local business, I know plenty of small businesses struggling to keep their heads above water too.
INFLATION IS A CONCERN BUT THE REAL WORRY IS WHERE PRICES WILL LAND
Consumers and businesses are dealing with higher interest rates that have come as a result of the Central Bank trying to tame inflation. Loan products such as mortgages and car loans are more expensive. The noise coming from these issues alone is enough to drown out any positive aspects of the economy. Stubbornly high inflation is a concern for policy makers, but for the average Joe, we are more concerned about where prices will eventually fall back to. We can deal with some short term pain but with inflation stabilising and some early signs it may even be falling, a large percentage of our survey respondents expect prices
to continue to rise. This is backed up by many economists predicting they will never return to what they were. It’s not clear how much wage increases have played into higher prices up to now but there is a general consensus that where business margins are tight, higher wages for workers will lead to sustained higher prices for everyday products.
GOVERNMENT IS FAILING ON ISSUES IMPACTING OUR STANDARD OF LIVING
Research published by the National Youth Council of Ireland last week showed that more than 7 in 10 young people aged 18-24 are considering moving abroad because they think they would enjoy a better quality of life elsewhere. We asked a similar question to locals in our survey and more than 50% of Killarney locals said that either they, or someone they know, is considering moving abroad. This is a sad indictment of Ireland today. The pace of housing delivery is dampening young people’s hopes of owning their own home and is even making renting unaffordable. It is not just impacting the youth however, I know of business owners in Killarney where housing shortages are impacting their ability to attract and retain talent, Businesses can’t afford to pay them a wage that allows them to comfortably rent and live in Killarney.
At the start of September we were reading about a major teacher shortage across the country. Graduate múinteoirí are now ditching Ireland for the Middle-East where their accommodation is often subsidised and their take-home-pay benefits from a largely tax-free society. This Wednesday we witnessed a staff walk out at UHK in protest of a recruitment ban in place by the HSE. Reports claim that there are over 90 clerical positions waiting to be filled at the hospital. It is no wonder with all of these added pressures that our nurses and doctors are heading Down Under for warmer weather and better pay and while you couldn’t begrudge them, the drain of health workers in Ireland is leaving those left behind working in stressful and sometimes dangerous conditions.
IT’S THE NOT KNOWING THAT KILLS
The economy is in a strange place at the moment, we are not sure if it is growing, slowing or shrinking. It kind of feels like we are dangling off the edge of a cliff and one big gust of wind could push us over the edge. The preferred outcome is that we will be pulled back to safer ground but can this government gets to grips with the major issues impacting our standard of living and will inflation, and more importantly prices, decrease to a more tolerable level?

St. Brigid's TY students take part in 'Think Languages Day' Organised by the Modern Foreign Language departments in the school, the day focused on the cultural and academic benefits of learning foreign languages. Students took part in a wide variety of activities over the course of the day, including Zumba, film screenings, beginners' German, a workshop on Spanish music,
Capoeira with Movement & Fitness (New Street), a trip to Killarney's Argentinian restaurant, Tango, and a presentation from Jean Conacher of the University of Limerick. “The day was a fantastic success. Well done to the girls for taking part so wholeheartedly, and congratulations to all involved in organising this successful day.,” said organiser and teacher Ms Dineen.
Students from St Brigid's Killarney recently attended a workshop in Killarney House hosted by the Killarney Coffee Cup project.
Killarney Coffee Cup project goes back to school Students from St Brigid's Killarney recently attended a workshop in Killarney House hosted by the Killarney Coffee Cup project. The session began with the task of matching the common items of litter, to the time it takes for them to decompose. The items ranged from crisp packets, banana skins and single-use coffee cups. The aim of this activity was to highlight the importance of minimising waste and litter, to protect the unique Biosphere Reserve that is Killarney National Park.
The Killarney Coffee Cup project has now challenged the students to create an art, science or communication project, using the unwanted single-use coffee cups, which were disposed of by local businesses. We look forward to seeing what creative ways the students will repurpose these coffee cups!

Gardaí make another arrest in Thomas Dooley murder case As part of the ongoing investigation into the fatal assault of a Killarney man in Rathass Cemetery, Tralee, last year, Gardai arrested another man. The man, in his 60s, was detained at an unspecified Garda station in the county.
However, he was later released without charge. Gardai are investigating the death of 43 year-old Thomas Dooley of Hazelwood Drive, Ballyspillane, who died following a fatal assault at the Tralee graveyard on October 5. His wife Siobhan was also injured in the incident,

Continuing the wonderful tradition of the life-size Christmas Crib, this week a new crib was installed in St. Mary's Cathedral. Inspired by Mrs Rena Kennelly, who created the iconic Cathedral crib for over 50 years. Fr Kieran O'Brien, Killarney Parish, commissioned the very talented Eamonn Mulvhill, to design and construct a new crib in time for the annual blessing during 6.15pm mass on December 16. Kerry County Council has extended the current ban on motor traffic on the town centre street until December 31 next year. This is to facilitate ongoing efforts to make the town centre of Killarney more pedestrian-friendly. Pedestrianisation was introduced on the street at the start of the pandemic to allow for social distancing. “The purpose of the road closure is to facilitate the extension of Public Health Measures introduced in response to public health emergency and to facilitate best practice design and consultation with respect of Killarney URDF Pro-
ject. The closure will also facilitate the continued support of the government initiative to promote to Outdoor Dining in the Hospitality Sector,” said a council statement.

He received his award in MTU Cork from the Engineering Technology Teachers association of Ireland. He made a model of a site utility vehicle which was deemed exceptional and noted by the examiners. His metal work
teacher Mr Jer O Sullivan said "His attention to detail was exceptional, his projects met all the criteria of the brief while the level of finish was excellent while maintaining the design. The electronic aspect of the project was above and beyond what was required. I was not very surprised when I heard he won the award as his work always stood out to date." Lucas is currently continuing his academic journey at Kerry College and plans to go onto to complete a degree in computing in MTU next year.

The same but diffeusreiciannst - A tribute to three great Irish m
Driving home from work last Friday, tributes for Shane McGowan were pouring out across the radio stations and while listening in, I got a strong sense of déjà vu. | By Chris Davies It was only a few months earlier that we got the sad news that the talented Aslan front man Christy Dingham had passed away, and a short few weeks after that Sinéad O’Connor. The loss of three iconic Irish musicians that left music fans across the country reeling. When I think about each artist individually, their personalities couldn’t be more different. Yet, for days after the passing of the Pogues frontman, I found myself wondering why I was so drawn to all three. And then, over the weekend I stumbled across a completely unrelated article
which led with a headline: “In a year dominated by artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and disingenuity, “authentic” has somehow emerged as Merriam-Webster’s word for 2023.” And there was my answer. The one characteristic that embodied all three of these great Irish musicians. It was my mother that first introduced me to Aslan’s music. She grew up during their peak and loved all sorts of rock music. I regularly watch their Vicar Street performances back on YouTube and still get mesmerised by Christy’s intense stage presence. Using elaborate hand gestures to evoke a greater meaning behind the words, he always looked like he was away
in his own world. Off stage, and particularly later in his career, I admired him for his honesty when talking about his struggles with addiction and mental health. He was talking openly about these issues long before it was the norm. Sinéad O'Connor was another original soul who, because of her talent, was catapulted into a music industry consumed by artificiality; she was almost too pure for it all. I always admired her unwavering commitment to her beliefs. Her authenticity was evident in every aspect of her artistry. The way she unapologetically embraced her shaved head and boy-ish style, she challenged conventional opinions around beauty. Her music reflected her personal struggles and she never shied away from addressing issues of social injustice, religion, and gender equality. Her stances often drew criticism and controversy, but she always remained
true to herself. Shane MacGowan will always be remembered for his unfiltered nature, and while the lyrics of many songs were dark and gritty, there was also an element of empathy and compassion in what he wrote. Like Christy, he too struggled with addiction and mental health issues throughout his career. While his demons sometimes spilled over into the public eye, his honesty and vulnerability just endeared him even more to us Irish. So isn’t it apt in a year we lost three great musicians, the word of 2023 happens to be the one undeniable trait that they all shared. Thank you Christy, Sinead and Shane for showing us that authenticity is not just about being different to everyone else; but also about possessing the courage to challenge the established, to question the norms, and to keep going, even when the going gets tough.

Christmas Video from St. Oliver’s The staff and children of St. Oliver’s have gotten together again to produce another entertaining and moving Christmas video. The cast, selected from sixth class, really shone during filming and they had short windows of time to do the various scenes. It was an idea by Oisin O’ Connor originally, and after some creative discussions, a lovely heartwarming storyline came from Elaine Price. The video was directed by Noel O’ Sullivan and produced by Oisin. “We had great help from the local community with enjoyable cameo roles by
Kate O’ Leary of the Laurels, Niamh Sheahan, manager of Reidy’s, Garda Gillian O’ Donoghue, singer Maura Reen and former All Star Kerry goalkeeper Diarmuid Murphy,” said Noel O’Sullivan. The video is accompanied by an original Christmas song written by Noel and sung by fellow teacher Sinéad Flynn and school principal Colm Ó Súilleabháin. The video was released on December 8 on St. Oliver’s new Facebook and Instagram pages.

Planning investigation A Kerry Fianna Fáil Councillor has welcomed the RTÉ Investigates Programme dealing with serial objectors to Planning Applications and has called on An Garda Síochána to immediately initiate an investigation into the matter. “There are people who appeal against Planning Applications that have no bearing whatsoever on them, the building project sometimes many miles away from where they live and work. I am always suspicious of such actions, and I am calling on the Garda Commissioner to initiate an investigation into any individuals
or organisations who submit appeals that do not concern them. Some objectors claim to be objecting to protect the environment and their Bona Fides need to be checked," said Councillor Michael Cahill. “Opportunities to object and then withdraw the objection for monetary gain must be stopped also and Planning Law must be updated to ensure that this does not become a money making racket for unscrupulous people. Serial objectors exist all over the country and their motives must come under scrutiny. All if this brings our Planning Laws into disrepute and the public have lost confidence in the process itself." said Councillor Cahill.

Killarney story exhibition launched at Killarney House Killarney House welcomed 72 locals to the launch of the Storied Killarney Exhibition, a voluntary community project which brings to life eight Killarney stories. The exhibition was officially opened by Michael Gleeson who spoke of the importance of sharing local histories and stories in Killarney and commended the storytellers for their time and creativity and wonderful work, now on display in Killarney House. Pat Dawson, Diana Fawsitt and the team at Killarney House have been giving their support for this community project by providing a wonderful exhibition space. They are simple stories told by Killarney people for our community, with the aim of sharing some of what they love, have learned and remember about their unique home place. Here we see them told through words, photographs, art, dance and song. Storytellers /groups involved: • Daisy Sugrue (11) wrote her version of the legend Tír na nÓg and painted Oisin and Niamh. • Jessica McCrohan & Lauren Casey shared the story of their favourite place – Torc waterfall through words, art and dance, including a wonderful video of Jessica performing her own choreography at Torc waterfall. • Killarney Creatives: Michale (mick-gale) Pingo, Rachel Griffen, Anna Dunlea, Mischa McCarthy, Ellen McSweeney and Elizabeth O’ Shea explored and documented their response to Reenadinna
woods through words, photographs, art and poetry. • Stephen Cotter – introduces us to the incredible world of Moths with facts and practical protection measures. His macro photography is as good as anything you’ll find in National Geographic. • Maurice Moriarty gives us a flavour of growing up on Lower New Street in the 50’s with the Demesne as their playground and his song The Fields of Cnoc na Ri takes us back in time and through the landscape and lifespan – not a dry eye in the house. • Anna Dunlea – shows how to complete family tree research and presents some of the interesting people in her family tree. • Brian Bowler – displays his short film script based on a local ghost story at Derrycunnihy and his son Glen Bowler captures a stunning image to accompany it. • The Men’s Shed give us an idea of what happens in the Shed and introduces us to some of the people involved and the type of work undertaken along with lots of fun and banter. There are also a group of children’s micro stories, showing off their favourite Killarney spots. The exhibition will run through to the end of January and is free to all.

Local dancers retain Munster titles
Dancers from the Áine Murphy Academy of Irish Dancing brought the year to a very successful end at the recent Munster Championships which were held in the INEC at the end of November. Following huge wins recently at the Great Britain and All-Scotland Championships the dancers continued the winning ways over 4 days of competitions. Three dancers, Alexandria Scally (Under 7), Marcus O'Sullivan (Under 10) and Caoimhe O’Halloran (Under 16) retained the Munster Titles they won last year. In addition to this there were five further dancers who made the podium in their respective age groups, Ceallaigh Fahy Murphy, Réidín Ni Laoithe, Isabelle O’Sullivan, Grace O’Sullivan and Caoimhe Cawley. Following this competition six of the old-
er dancers have qualified to dance at the World Championships which will be held in Glasgow next Easter. These dancers are Marcus and Grace O’Sullivan, Laura Cronin, Saoirse Griffin, Caoimhe Cawley and Caoimhe O’Halloran. Further to the solo results, the Under 12 Ceili team finished in the second spot and there was super dancing from Roisin McAuliffe and Katie Heneghan. The dancers now look forward to Christmas before the competitions start again with the All-Ireland back in the INEC in February and the World Championships in Glasgow in March.
Minister for Education and Kerry T.D, Norma Foley, has welcomed the inclusion of 43 Kerry primary schools in to the programme. It is also known to facilitate better education outcomes and I know that today’s announcement will be welcomed by many parents and families. “The Hot School Meals Programme has been a tremendous success and it is hugely important that it is expanded to include every primary school in the country.”

We are already making plans for the Fest from 5 to 12t October 2024 and we are looking forward to building on this year’s successes. That said, there is always room for improve-

Dermot McCarthy closes a One of Killarney’s most talented artists Dermot McCarthy is calling time on his accomplished career. Born in Killorglin, they may like to call him their own but having lived and worked in Killarney for so long we are definitely claiming him as ours.
Dermot. Although far too modest to admit, I am sure he has inspired many young Killarney artists over the years. I noticed that Dermot was closing up shop and decided to drop by his Art Gallery on Barry's Lane (High St.) for a chat with himself and his wife Helen. Dermot and Helen are two of the most pleasant and genuine people you will meet and after an hour of chatting with them you can tell they make a great team.
| By Chris Davies
The pair first hit it off at a dance in the Old Town Hall back in 1968 and five years later they were married in Kilcummin Church. At the time, Dermot was a welder and fitter in Liebherr and while the money was decent, his dream was always to own his own art gallery. The couple ran a craft shop on Brewery Lane for a while selling Dermot’s black and white prints and they also spent a bit of time running another craft store on the Muckross road. In the mid- 70’s they bought a derelict
I know Dermot from my days in the Monastery N.S school. Dermot was going around to local schools teaching art at the time and I always remember it as the highlight of our week. He had a knack of taking what looked like a very difficult drawing, and breaking it down into easily digestible, step-by-step instructions. If I rooted through my attic at home I would probably find a clown or hot air balloon painting that I did with
HISTORY
site on Barry’s Lane from the owners Taylors Bar on New St. with the view of Dermot one day realising his dream. They admit the purchase was a “bargain at the time”. Not long after, Kerry County Council notified property owners on the lane that a regeneration project was planned to bring new life into what wasa largely derelict laneway. The council told all property owners that they would either have to invest and build up with apartments or sell to someone that would. Dermot’s wife Helen said this was a stressful time for them. By now (early 80’s) Dermot had taken redundancy from Liebherr and was teaching some art classes in schools while she was working part-time. “We didn’t have the money to do the job that needed to be done”. A number of approaches were made by different business people in town who said they would build Dermot’s Art Gallery but on the condition that they
would have ownership of the apartments above the shop. The couple felt like they had no option but to press ahead with this offer but one day Dermot got a call from a close friend who told him before he makes a decision, at least go down and speak with the bank about getting a loan to redevelop the property themselves. Helen says “We didn’t have big incomes at the time but we were always good little savers and the lovely young man in the bank took a chance on us, we are glad that he did now”
TALENT
Self-taught from a very young age, Dermot would have grown up doing a lot of landscape stills and nature paintings, with one particular painting of a bird ending up in a David Attenborough nature book. Over time his style naturally shifted to the type of work you see in the photos here. It is a more surreal style which is comparable to that of Salvador Dalí, a

s art gallery after 25 years renowned Spanish artist who is best known for paintings that balance a rational vision of life with one that asserts the power of the unconscious and dreams. I asked Dermot if he could describe his style and he said he couldn’t, but that an old friend Frank Lewis, who actually gave him his first start with two exhibitions in his gallery, called them “Parable Paintings”. Each painting has a story and meaning behind it. I was curious to find out about Dermot’s creative process from idea through to the finished product. I thought he might reveal some big secret but to my disappointment he simply replied that "I just start drawing and one shape leads on to another”. The Gallery is stocked with everything, from small A5 prints right up to larger A1 framed pieces. He told me that a small one could take days to complete while the larger ones could take weeks. Artist Pauline Bewick, who sadly passed away in 2022, used to keep in touch with Dermot described his work as “unique and ahead of its time”. Dermot said that Pauline was a good friend to him, often sharing advice on the best materials to use. He has been a big supporter of the Killarney Rotary Club down through the years, always donating a piece of his art which would go on to raise a tidy sum of money.
RETIREMENT
So what’s the plan now he is retiring? “I will still paint, but just for my own pleasure now”. He enjoys reading books and has a keen interest in reading about musicians’ lives. On his favourite music
genre - “I enjoyed Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones back in my day, I was a bit of a rocker. I also listened to a lot of blues, long before it became cool” he said with a wry smile. Helen said that not much will change for the couple, “we will still head off to Rossbeigh Beach for a walk, although the legs aren’t what they used to be. Did you know Dermot was a great runner?” she added. Not a man to heap praise on himself, Dermot reluctantly told me that he ran with Farranfore Athletic Club for many years and also ran one of the first Dublin City Marathons in an impressive time of 2 hours 38 minutes. I finished up by asking Dermot if he could give one bit of advice to any young artists out there what would he say to them - “Have a clear focus and just go for it, there are a lot more supports out there now for young artists. Kerry County Council have an active arts department and are great for supporting us with events and other stuff - it is a good time to be a young artist”. As I headed out the door I asked Dermot how it feels to be closing down, to which he replied “We are sad to be closing up and we will miss it, but we feel that we have earned a rest at this stage.” He added, “Make sure to thank my wife Helen for all the help with my expeditions down the years, and all of our old customers, friends and neighbours that have been so good to us.” Dermot and Helen are running a closing-down sale with super deals on all of his pieces. I recommend dropping by and checking out the sale - his works would make a great centrepiece on any wall in the house.
I just start drawing and one shape leads on to another...

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
RTE Investigates: The Planning Trap If there was ever a show on TV that is worth the licence fee then it has to be RTÉ Investigates. On Monday night the programme revealed their latest instalment titled ‘The Planning Trap’, a six month undercover investigation that revealed how two brothers were using loopholes in the planning system for their own financial gain. The brothers John Callaghan (Kells, Co Meath), and his brother Micheál (West-
port, Co Mayo) were exposed as the pair that were submitting objections based on environmental concerns, objections which looked legitimate. However, their intentions were much more sinister. Knowing that an appeal could hold up a development for anywhere between 12-24 months the brothers were using the loophole to take payments from the developers in exchange for them withdrawing their objection by way of a simple one-page
form called a Section 140, which is submitted to withdraw an appeal from An Bord Pleanála In one instance, a payment of over €50,000 was made by a developer in return for the withdrawal of an appeal against a multi-million-euro commercial development while another property developer who refused to make an offer to the brothers has had his 74 home development delayed for almost a year.
Are you smarter than our 10 year olds? According to a major international report carried out by the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), Ireland's 10-yearolds are outperforming their international peers when it comes to reading. The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) was one of two reports published this week of which reflect well on our primary school children’s literacy skills. The tests were completed by 300,000 school children across 57 countries and the scores achieved by Irish children were among the highest achieving countries. Due to Covid the last tests done were in 2016 where Irish 10-year-olds outperformed pupils in all other EU countries and internationally only Singapore and the Russian Federation scored higher.
Harry Redknapp returns to manage ‘best worst team’ Harry Redknapp has come out of retirement to try and help change the fortunes of Cwm Albion. The club, which was formed more than 100 years ago, currently play in the Swansea Senior League. They lost all 22 of their games last season, which earned them the title no team wants to win - The Specsavers' "best worst team" in the UK It is reported that Redknapp will support the club throughout the season, including running some training sessions. Speaking about his new appointment Harry said that he didn’t know what to
expect. "The team's 191-goal difference certainly caught my eye, but after meeting the lads, you can't doubt their determination," "They're a real close unit, and their hard work is already starting to pay off, with the lads securing their first win in three years in their latest match." Among the club's players is 73 year old John Rees, who has been with the club for over 50 years and goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald, the club goalkeeper who hasn't kept a single clean sheet in 10 years.

Santa’s Reindeer may have been spotted on UK road The Police were called to the scene of the A11 near Barton Mills in Suffolk last weekend after a report came through of reindeer blocking traffic on the road. The incident is said to be very peculiar as there are not thought to be any wild reindeer living in England and it is unclear where the animals came from. The police are still trying to formally identify reindeers involved but are not ruling out Dasher, Comet, Vixen, and Rudolph, the red-nosed lead reindeer, being involved. They said that they are following a num-
The team revealed that this particular breed of penguin, engage in thousands of ‘microsleeps’ lasting just 4 seconds each while nesting. This unusual sleep pattern allows them to accumulate more than 11 hours of sleep per day, ensuring the safety of their nests and offspring.
During the nesting period, one parent stands guard over the nest, protecting it from predatory birds and intruding penguins while the other forages for food. Sleeping for regular periods would expose the nesting penguins to potential threats which prompted them to adopt a sleep strategy that involves frequent, but brief episodes of sleep. Utilising advanced technologies the scientists observed the sleep behaviour of nesting chinstrap penguins in a colony exposed to the brown skua, a predatory bird, on King George Island, Antarctica.
ber of lines of inquiry into the incident including one theory which suggests Santa sent the four reindeer off from the North Pole last week to finalise the Christmas route plan. However the deer we so impressed with the beautiful beaches, charming villages and bustling port towns of Suffolk that they decided to stop off for a bit of sight-seeing. The Killarney Advertiser have contacted Santa’s press office to see if we could confirm that the sighting was indeed Santa's reindeer, but the elf that we spoke with said that Santa was very busy and could not make himself available for comment.
Date set for 'role of women in the home' referendum Votes on plans to remove the constitutional reference to the role of women in the home; and expand the concept of the family within the constitution, will take place next year. The votes will be held on March 8th, 2024, International Women’s Day.
However, the coalition will not put a proposal to the people that the constitution would be amended to refer explicitly to gender equality and non-discrimination - something that was recommended by the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality and the special Oireachtas Committee which assessed its recommendations.
Micheál Martin vs Google New court filings this week show the Tánaiste Micheál Martin has issued a High Court action against Google Ireland Ltd and Google LLC. The Tánaiste is seeking a court order to identify who is behind a series of ads which have appeared online on “respectable websites” for “financial products” A spokesperson said the Tanaiste believes it is “neither acceptable nor tolerable that persons unknown can use his image and name online in an effort to associate him with financial products he has never heard of and seek to extract money from people, using his name”. They added: “As they were not in a position to hand over the information without a court order, the Tánaiste was left with no option but to pursue the matter through the courts."

Christmas Recipe
Hotel Europe culinary team share Christmas recipes Executive Chef Alex Nahke and his culinary team at The Europe Hotel & Resort share their expertise for the perfect Turkey this Christmas. With just weeks to go before Christmas day, it’s time to start planning your Christmas day feast. We’ve asked the
culinary team at The Europe Hotel and Resort for their tips to ensure the perfect turkey this Christmas.
The Christmas Turkey Part 1 Some important things to consider before cooking the perfect Christmas Turkey.
Method:
What size Turkey do I buy?
Preheat your oven to 180°C/gas 4.
Please see our rough guide: 2-2.5kg 3kg 3.5kg 4-4.5kg 5-5.5kg 6-6.5kg
serves 4-6 serves 6-7 serves 7-8 serves 8-10 serves 10-12 serves 12-15
How long should I cook my turkey for? Heat your oven to 180°C/gas 4 4-5kg cook 2¼ to 2½ hours 5-6kg cook 2½ to 3 hours 6-7kg cook 3 hours to 3½ hours 7-8kg cook 3½ to 4 hours 8-9kg cook 4 to 4¼ hours 9-10kg cook 4¼ to 4½ hours
Remove your turkey from the fridge at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before you cook it. This is to avoid less shrinkage when it goes into a hot oven. Place a trivet of Root Vegetables, such as parsnip, carrots, and onions in the bottom of the tray to help make a gravy with all the juices. Slightly season the Turkey with Sea Salt & Black Pepper, cover the turkey loosely with foil. Remove the foil for the last 40 minutes of cooking time to allow the bird to nicely brown. Roast your bird for the calculated time, or until the juices run clear from the thigh if you pierce it with a knife or a skewer. The safest way is to buy a temperature probe and penetrate the thigh - if it has a temperature of 70C for 2 min that is perfect and safe. Once cooked, carefully lift the turkey out of the tray and rest on a board. Cover loosely with foil for at least an hour while you get on cooking the rest of your spread.
Additional Tips: There is no need to wash a turkey before roasting.
Or 20 minutes per lbs + 20 minutes safety- this is a rough guide. Make a note of the weight of your bird, knowing the exact weight will ensure the cooking time is correct and thus avoid an overcooked and dry bird or an undercooked one. Make sure your turkey is going to fit into your oven. You will need a roasting tin that’s big enough with room to spare and deep enough to catch all the fat and cooking juices.
The safest way of cooking the stuffing is not to stuff the turkey with it.
How long should I leave my Turkey to rest for after cooking?
Keep an eye on next week’s magazine where Chef Alex Nahke with be sharing his recipe for a special Sage, Onion & Sausage Stuffing which should accompany the Christmas Turkey
Please see our resting guide below: 4-6kg – rest for 1 ½ hours 6-10kg – rest for 2 hours
Use some of the cooked turkey juices for your stuffing to add the necessary flavour. If you get your butcher to remove the legs, bone and roll them. You are left with the crown of the turkey which would fit better in the oven! It also cooks faster, and you will have a cleaner way of serving your turkey. The boned and rolled legs can be used for a normal roast over the Christmas.

Kerry Active Retirement teams take top prizes at National Bowls Competition Members of two Kerry Active Retirement bowls teams have taken out top prizes at the 2023 Active Retirement Ireland National Indoor Mats Bowling Competition, which took place at the Gleneagle INEC Arena last week. The Kenmare Dolphins bowls team won the large bowls plate final, with the Fossa Swans coming in second place for the large bowls cup. The Kenmare Dolphins team members are Vera Shaw, Mo Glover, Alan Storey and skip Bill Glover, while the Fossa Swans team members are Barbara Sweeney, Norman Wilson, John Byrne and skip Hannah Mai Harris. Last night (30.11.23), Kenmare Dolphins were presented with the 2023 large bowls plate and Fossa Swans were presented with the 2023 large bowls cup runners-up
prize by Active Retirement Ireland National President Kevin Monaghan and Mayor of Killarney Cllr Brendan Cronin. Over three days, 63 Active Retirement teams from across the country competed for the 2023 Active Retirement Ireland Cup in indoor mat bowls at the organisation’s 11th annual flagship event. Speaking at the awards presentation, Active Retirement Ireland CEO Maureen Kavanagh said: “Congratulations to the Kerry bowls teams, the Kenmare Dolphins and Fossa Swans, on their fantastic achievement at this year’s National Bowls
Competition. The 252 bowlers who have competed for the cup this week, alongside our volunteers who helped deliver the event, confirm the drive and desire of older people to do things for themselves, maintain social connections and be a part of life. Social events like the National Bowls Competition, where older people can get together, be active and enjoy a little healthy competition and camaraderie, are vital for positive ageing. We are grateful for the generous support of our event host the Gleneagle for making this event possible for so many of our members and for their recognition of the contribution that older people make. “Older people don’t want things done for them; they want to be active in their own lives. It’s time the Government
instituted and implemented a comprehensive, whole-of-government positive ageing framework in Ireland, including an adequate state pension benchmarked against average earnings, so that they can.” There are 494 Active Retirement Associations (ARAs) in local communities across Ireland — groups of older people who come together to organise social events and activities to reduce isolation and loneliness — supported by the national body Active Retirement Ireland, the largest membership organisation for older people in the country. In 2019, Active Retirement Ireland had 25,000 members operating out of 550 local ARAs. According to latest figures, 90% of this number of ARAs are back up-and-running again, with membership numbers now strengthened to 84% of pre-pandemic levels. This is an increase on 2022 figures, which at the end of last year showed that 81% of ARAs had resumed activities and 74% of members had returned to their ARAs.

Co-driver Ger Conway dedicated his win on the modified section of Saturday’s Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally to the memory of his late father.
Conway dedicates his win to his late father Brendan
Brendan Conway passed away in September. He was always a great supporter of Ger’s career and local motorsport. A dedicated classic car enthusiast, the Killarney Historic Rally was always one of the highlights of Brendan's year. Ger was co-driving for Rob Duggan and their win means he has six wins in the event – three on the modified section and three on the overall Historic section. Rob brought his tally to five, four Modified wins and one historic win. Their victory on Saturday was not without drama. Rob’s last rally was the Escort Rally Special in Belgium. He retired from that event after a sizeable accident and faced a race against time to have his Ford Escort rebuilt in time for the December 2 event. The paint was barely dry on the car when he drove it under the ceremonial start gantry on Friday night. The wipers failed on the opening loop and the car also suffered a bent steering rack, a possible legacy from the Belgian
crash. “The first stage started [by Listry Church] by where he is laid to rest,” said Ger. “He is sorely missed by all but he was definitely watching over us today.” They trailed last year’s winner Kevin Eves and Chris Melley by 1.2 seconds with just two stages to run but the local turned the deficit into a 3.4-second advantage over the double run over Rockfield. The second run over – under the cover of Darkness was decisive - Duggan and Conway were 2.7 seconds quicker than their main rivals to secure the popular win. Glenflesk’s Denis Hickey and Eoin O’Leary were ninth in their Ford Escort. “It was an eventful day,” said Hickey. “We had an overshoot in the morning, a clutch problem all day but we are happy out to finish even if it is one place less than last year.” Cousins Shane and Aidan Buckley were third in class three. Shane is better known as top co-driver but this was his first time driving.
“I spent the day telling Aidan how to do his job, and Aidan spent the day telling me how to do my job,” he joked at the finish. David Slattery and Ger Coffey were second in class six, which should be enough to secure Slattery the Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship.
CLASS ROUND UP
Jack O’Shea and Darragh Lynch were second in Class 1 in their Mini. Kerry Motor Club navigator Mike Cleary guided Cork’s Ollie Kierce to second in class 3, while Cleary’s KMC clubmates, brothers Ken and Ray McKenna were third in the same class in their Peugeot 205.
HISTORIC RALLY
The overall historic rally was won by Jonathon Greer in his Ford Sierra Saphire Cosworth. The defending champion, guided on this
occasion by the returning Kirsty Riddick, enjoyed a day-long duel with Donagh Kelly and Rory Kennedy. The gap was just 3.7 seconds after eight challenging stages. “I don’t mind finishing second where you are in the fight for it,” said the BMW driver at the finish. Alan Ring and co-driver Adrian Deasy were expected to challenge for the event lead but a misfiring engine on the opening stage ended their challenge and they retired their Subaru Legacy soon after. Rathmore schoolteacher Declan Casey was third overall alongside Michael McDaid in a Ford Escort Mk2. Robert Falvey and John Doody won class D3 in their Ford Escort RS 2000. Tommy Commane guided San Francisco driver Joe Whyte to second in class B2 in their Austin Mini Cooper S.

Remembering Rosemary Smith “It is a funny thing that in my 50 years of rallying and racing all over the world it is not the wins I think of but the funny things that happened before, during and after the events”. | By Mike Marshall These were the opening words of the interview which Rosemary Smith gave to Michael O’Mahoney when he was gathering material for Icons of Irish Rallying his brilliant publication of human-interest stories collected from over seventy men and women who have been part of the Irish motorsport scene from the mid1960s to recent times. Michael got to know Rosemary and her long-time co-driver Pauline Gullick during his years in Dublin and through his company sponsored several Pauline’ appearances on the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally as co-driver with the great Jim McRae. While Rosemary had of course rallied on the Killarney stages years earlier in her time with various works teams on the Circuit of Ireland, it was not until 1992 that she made her one and only appearance in the Rally of the Lakes. That entry was brought about through the efforts of Joe Foley, a larger than life character who with a number of fellow glass blowers and cutters had set up Tipperary Crystal near Carrick-on- Suir, after the world famous Waterford Crystal had closed its doors. Joe was a rally enthusiast and thanks to him many motor clubs were able to present beautiful crystal glass trophies which would have been far beyond the club’s budget were it not for the exceptional
Margaret O’Donoghue of the Gleneagle Hotel presenting awards to Rosemary Smith and Joe Foley.
discounts provided by Joe. In 1992 Tipperary Crystal came on board as trophy sponsors for the Rally of the Lakes and Joe came up with the idea that to get max return for his involvement the best plan would be to enter a Tipperary Crystal sponsored car, driven by somebody who would be guaranteed to attract media attention. Rosemary had at that stage virtually finished with competitive driving to concentrate on her Driving School and Fashion interests, but such was the persuasive power of Joe’s idea that the entry list for the 1992 Lakes records Rosemary Smith at No 38, co-driven by Joe Foley in a Class
A7 Peugeot. It is doubtful if the team carried out any recce but it was clear that Rosie’s years of experience gained in tackling rally stages all over the world has not deserted her and she came back to the finish on Sunday evening with an unscratched car and a class win after eighteen of the Classic Killarney stages. This was the last December Lakes before the switch to May, so the latter stages on both days would have tackled in failing light or darkness, adding to the challenges of the event. The photo shows Margaret O’Donoghue presenting their class awards to Rose-
mary and Joe. Joe left Tipperary Crystal a few years later when the company changed hands. He went to live abroad but did not enjoy a long retirement before he passed away. Rosemary and Joe have now left us but thankfully Margaret remains very much with us as an iconic reminder of the pivotal role which the O’Donoghue family and the Gleneagle have played in the development of, not only the Rally of the Lakes and the Historic Rally, but also so many other events and initiatives which have ensured that Killarney always remains in pole position as the premier visitor destination in the country.
Killarney and District Motor Club members honoured by Motorsport Ireland | By Cormac Casey Several members of Killarney and District Motor Club were honoured at the Motorsport Ireland awards lunch in Dublin on Wednesday. The highlight of the event is the announcement of the sport’s top awards. Kilkenny’s Jack Brennan (19) was named Young Rally Driver of the Year, while Wexford native Jack Byrne was named Young Racing Driver of the Year and International Driver of the Year award went to recently crowned FIA Junior World Rally Champion, William Creight-

Keeping your home safe this Christmas As Christmas approaches many of us will be decorating our homes inside and out. This time of year will see more use of lights, additional plugs, extension leads and candles. We should be mindful of the additional hazards at this time of year. Here are some simple tips, Inspect Christmas lights and electrical decorations. Check all leads, cables and plugs before use. Anything with a frayed end should be fitted correctly or replaced. Only buy festive lighting marked with a CE mark
Switch off all festive lights when unattended. Use only one extension cord – do not double up on extension cords or overload sockets Do not use outdoor lights indoors. Never leave lighted candles unattended. Ensure your real Christmas tree is a safe distance from any open flames. Check smoke detectors are in working order. A fire blanket is a good investment for any home.
If you are away from your home over Christmas consider a timer switch for lights and do not advertise that your home is vacant on social media. Thefts occur at Christmas time too unfortunately. If your home is to be unoccupied for a longer period, inform your insurers, drain the water system so that freezing of pipes cannot occur and ask a friend or relation to check your home daily. Please check on the wellbeing of any neighbours who are alone over the Christmas period. Stay safe and have a peaceful, relaxing and Happy Christmas.

A look ahead to 2024
As we approach the end of 2023, three very obvious things stand out when it comes to the property market in that time: under supply, significant price increases and interest rate hikes.
This has been evident on both a national level, despite reports that government will exceed their housing targets for the year, and very much so on a local level. We have experienced unprecedented demand for properties, both for sale and rent, in 2023. It has been a year where demand has heavily outstripped supply. 2023 has witnessed 5 ECB interest rate
hikes. The variable ECB rate in Jan 2023 was 3% and it looks like it will finish the year at 4.5%. It is difficult to see much changing as we look ahead to 2024. We can expect to see a similar market picture with relatively stable prices and a shortage of available stock on the market. First-time buyers are likely to remain the dominant cohort of buyers nationally, underpinning demand in the market for both new and second-hand homes. It appears the present interest rate environment is close to, or at the top of the current cycle with rate reductions forecast for the second half of 2024 which
will be good news for buyers from an affordability perspective. We expect new housing output to continue on its upward trajectory, in line with the targets set out in the Housing for All strategy and recent housing commencements data would indicate that close to 30,000 new homes will be completed next year. The extension of the Help to Buy scheme combined with the other existing supports for buyers of new homes will help underpin demand in the new homes market. In terms of price movements in the year ahead, we expect low single-digit rates of price growth across most sectors of the market, however, homes with excellent energy efficiency ratings will continue to command a premium.

Legion, Crokes, Spa and Kilcummin in O’Donoghue Cup action The three Killarney clubs plus Kilcummin are vying for a place in the 2023 East Kerry Championship final as the famous old competition reaches the semi-final stage this weekend. Holders Dr Crokes face Spa on Saturday and Legion take on Kilcummin on Sunday with both fixtures being staged at the Fitzgerald Stadium. Two keenly contested matches are in store as these fierce local rivals try to finish the season with a flourish. It has been an up and down campaign for all four sides so capturing the coveted O’Donoghue Cup would certainly shorten the winter for whoever manages to do it.
• Spa v Dr Crokes
Last year’s finalists meet again on Saturday (2pm) and Spa will have revenge on their minds after losing the 2022 decider in disappointing fashion. Crokes won that game by 11 points (1-7 to 1-18) thanks, in part, to a blistering start that saw them race into a 1-4 to 0-0 lead inside six minutes. Goal-getter Mikeyx Casey (1-2) and Tony Brosnan (0-8) did most of the scoring for the club from Lewis Road and veteran forward Kieran O’Leary also played a pivotal role as Brian McMahon’s team dominated from start to finish. A late goal by Dara Moynihan improved the appearance of the scoreboard from Spa’s point of view but they were nowhere near their best on the day. A much better performance will be needed on Saturday if they are to extend their season by one more week and reach their third O’Donoghue Cup final in a row. The fact that Crokes are nearly at full strength (apart from absent Kerry star Gavin White) will make things difficult for the Tullig club and the defending champions will be favourites going into this one. Spa are capable of pushing their illustrious neighbours close on their day, though, and the wintry conditions will bring another layer of uncertainty to proceedings.
• Killarney Legion v Kilcummin
The last time these sides met it was Kilcummin who took the spoils as a dogged defensive performance led to a fourpoint win in the group stage of this year’s Intermediate Club Championship. Both Kilcummin and Legion advanced to the knockout rounds regardless, but both teams were knocked out by eventual champions Milltown-Castlemaine at the quarter-final and semi-final stage respectively. Legion were one of the favourites to win the Intermediate so falling at the penultimate hurdle came as a significant blow. How bainisteoir Peter Keane would love to see the year out on a high by capturing the club’s second East Kerry title in five years. If that last meeting in August is anything to go by, the town club will get nothing easy on Sunday. With the likes of Chris O’Leary, Seán O’Leary and Dara O’Callaghan in the backs, Kilcummin are tough to break down. Paul O’Shea has been operating at midfield in the absence of Kieran Murphy and he picked up the Man of the Match award in last week’s victory over Firies. The fact that they defeated senior opposition in Rathmore in Round 1 also underlines their credentials. Legion have made it to the semi-final stage with little fuss having seen off Listry in Round 1 and Fossa (who waited until the second half to unleash the Cliffords) in the quarters. Finbarr Murphy (0-7) was their MVP against Fossa with Ryan O’Grady (0-3) and substitute David O’Sullivan (0-2) also making key contributions in a 0-16 to 0-11 win. Much will naturally depend on Legion’s best footballer, James O’Donoghue. If he finds pockets of space he can unlock Kilcummin’s stubborn defence and drive his team to success. The winners of this weekend’s semi-finals will be out again next weekend for the last match of the season, the 2023 O’Donoghue Cup final.

Derry to visit Kerry in league opener Kerry’s first competitive match of the 2024 season will be against their opponents in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final, Derry, on Saturday, January 27 in Tralee. The Kingdom’s National League Division 1 fixtures were officially confirmed on Wednesday as the GAA released their master schedule for the new intercounty season, which will run from January to the end of July. Jack O’Connor’s men will have four home games in the league. They will welcome to Derry and Mayo to Austin Stack Park in Rounds 1 and 3, and Tyrone and Galway will travel to Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium in Rounds 5 and 7. In between, last year’s All-Ireland runners-up will make trips to Monaghan, Dublin and Roscommon. For obvious reasons, the game against All-Ireland champions Dublin under lights in Croke Park on Saturday, February 24 is the standout fixture in the spring calendar. The football league finals will be staged on the weekend of March 30/31. After enduring a difficult campaign in 2023 that saw them lose all four away games, the Kerry players will be eager to impress in next year’s league. They will likely go in as one of the favourites alongside Dublin, who are back in the top tier following a season in Division 2, and the other newly promoted team, Derry. The dates for the Munster Championship, All-Ireland Group Stage and All-Ireland Series have also been confirmed. Kerry will play the winners of Cork and Limerick in the Munster semi-final on April 20 with the final being held on May 5. The All-Ireland Group Stage then gets underway two weeks later with this stage following the same format as
2023. The All-Ireland quarter-finals are on June 29/30 with the semi-finals down for July 13/14. The All-Ireland final is fixed for the last Sunday of July. Before the serious business of the league and championship, Kerry will compete in the McGrath Cup. Their first fixture is at home to Tipperary on January 3 and they are away to Limerick on January 8. If they win their group, they will face the winner of the group containing Cork, Waterford and Clare on January 19.
HURLERS
The Kerry hurlers have also received their fixtures for the 2024 National League and they will get their Division 2A campaign underway with a home match against Carlow in Tralee on February 4. They will then face Down away, Meath at home (Austin Stack Park), Kildare away and Laois at home. The Division 2 and Division 3 hurling finals will take place the same weekend as the Division 1 football final (March 30/31). The Joe McDonagh Cup begins on April 13/14. Kerry’s opponents in this competition will be Laois, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath and Down.
KERRY LADIES
The LGFA also confirmed their schedule in recent weeks and All-Ireland runners-up Kerry will be hoping to hit the ground running when they play All-Ireland champions Dublin in the capital on Sunday, January 21. Kerry, who are the reigning Division 1 champions, will then have three consecutive home games against Waterford, Cork and Mayo before heading on the road to play Armagh and Meath. Their final fixture sees them play host to Galway on March 24. The league final will take place two weeks later in Croke Park.s

Jimmy’s struggle to In the final part of Eamonn Fitzgerald’s series on Jimmy Bermingham, the Dubliner who played for Kerry fights to save his name in the High Court As we move into the post-Stephen Kenny and post-Vera Pauw eras in Irish soccer, one thinks of who is eligible to play for the Irish teams. Any one of three criteria suffices: born in the Republic of Ireland, or have lived in ROI for 60 consecutive months before applying, or has a parent/ grandparent who was born in the Republic of Ireland (the ‘granny rule’) is eligible. It was not always so and this week I conclude the story of the amazing sporting life of Jimmy Bermingham. He won a Munster Championship playing at left corner forward on the 1923 Kerry football team but never got his medal. Now, 100 years later, fair dues to the Munster Council for commissioning jewellers to provide that elusive replica medal to his immediate descendants, daughterin-law Bernadette (90) and offspring Mossy, Paul, Liz and Terry. The Irish Football Association (IFA), founded in 1880, was the governing body for football across the entire island
of Ireland. However, following the setting up of the 26-county Free State, partition brought its own problems and caused soccer division in Bermingham’s story. Those who felt represented by the new Irish Free State formed the Football Association of the Irish Free State (FAIFS), which later became today’s Football Association of Ireland (FAI), governing football in the Republic of Ireland. The crux was that the Irish Free state had only dominion status whereas the IFA was part of the UK and as such had international recognition and acted on behalf of the new Irish Free State. In earlier editions we covered in detail how Bermingham played for the 1923 Kerry team who won the Munster final. He returned to Dublin and to soccer. He never again played Gaelic football. For Bohemian FC, the outside-right finished the 1926/27 season as top scorer with 23 goals in all competitions. He went
on to captain Bohs in 1928/29, and was capped for Ireland versus Belgium in 1929 at Dalymount Park. He was also part of the Bohemian FC team that won the Aciéries d'Angleur competition in 1929. He won three international caps and was involved in court injunctions for playing on the All-Ireland teams, not favoured at that time in the 1920s/1930s. Along with three other Bohs players on the 1930 international team, he was accused of “objectional conduct” and drawn into a “territorial dispute”. 26-county-born Horlacher, Bermingham and Morton accepted the invitation to play with the All-Ireland soccer team but on 11 November 1930, they received a letter from Mr Ryder in FSLOI (Free State) saying they took exception to players born here and forbade them to play. They played and got an invite to appear before the FA. They said they broke no rules but were (unjustly) suspended.
CONTROVERSY: The 1930 All-Ireland team that played England, including Jimmy Bermingham (front row, second from left).
Bermingham, in an affidavit, claimed his reputation as an amateur player was being ruined for life and that he had offers of professional contracts at English clubs which would now be in serious jeopardy. On November 20, the Bohs players took legal advice with a view to challenging the ban. The strong stand and defence of amateurs sparked huge interest in Dublin, Belfast and in Great Britain. Bohs management met and selected a team to play Cork at the weekend in the league. Would they include Bermingham, Morton and Horlacher? Most of the Bohs squad sided with the players and there was talk of a refusal to play Cork. On November 30, the Lord Mayor of Dublin attempted to broker peace deal. Senator Byrne said the IFA could meet with Free State FA and he could arrange to have the suspensions lifted and court proceedings dropped.
THE HIGH COURT
On December 1, the aforementioned three players applied for injunctions against the FA. “The court was over over-

o save his reputation crowded, and many persons were gathered in the corridors. The judge James Meredith Creed remarked that one would think a match was to be played in the court,” according to one report. The central issue was to seek to drop the ban which was preventing them from taking part in any soccer in the Free State, and if full effect were given, would prevent them from playing in any part of the world even though, “the players were among the foremost in the game”. After their selection for the match in which they played they were hauled before the emergency committee and suspended on the grounds of being guilty of “objectional conduct.” The Bohemian Three were represented later in court by George Gavan Duffy KC. Duffy had defended Roger Casement after the 1916 Easter Rising. He was also one of de Valera's plenipotentiaries to negotiate the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921. The players wished to be left out of any “territorial disputes” between the governing bodies. They asked the court to say that according to the rules of the Association, what they did in playing in the match was justified by the spirit of amateurism. After all, they were amateurs and not subject to the same restrictions as professionals. The players said Bohs should be free to select them. Mr Justice Meredith warned that the FA might say “very well, we will expel Bohemians FC from membership. I cannot prevent that”. They contended it was invalid, and if it continued “those forefront players in the height of the football season would be deprived of the right to play”. Bohs were due to play at Crystal Palace in January 1924 and “these young men would lose the most important season of their lives and the most important match of their lives”.
BOHS SPLIT
This saga caused internal strife at Bohs. James Doyle resigned after 35 years in protest at the players actions, for “disregarding matters of national importance”. Other comments included: “In common with the majority of players and bulk of football public north and south we deplore the differences which exist between the two ruling bodies”. It was a “wholly unprecedented attempt to control amateur players”. Pointing out that an English FA would have no jurisdiction if a player from an English club was selected and would not get involved. On December 3, the Defence (IFA) were given jurisdiction in the Free State but

had no affiliation with the international board. The judge said the IFA became a “peculiarly northern (Ireland) association, but I do not see that political changes should be reflected in sport or football”. The real issue was this: the struggle the Irish Free State was making for its life, for its very existence. “The Irish Free State had been recognised by every nation in the world, but apparently this limited liability company in Belfast thinks it can stand out against the whole world... in denying recognition.” “If (the Free State) tried this in Belfast, they would probably be forcibly ejected before they could select any players. It had done all it can in the interest of sport and good feeling between the people of the island. But they have always been turned down by the IFA and resisted – the IFA wanted the gate money and wanted control.” However, the new Free State through the FAI was trying to set up the League of Ireland as we know it today, The judge said that suspension was a bit extreme as there was no other international in the offing. Counsel said that on November 10, the players were warned not to play and told they could be suspended. IFA told FA: your association have no power to suspend the players, adding it would not be recognised in the North of Ireland. The judge asked if the suspension might be forever. Counsel said that was not contemplated. “There is no ill will or mal-
ice towards the players at all, and the very last thing the association wanted was anything in the nature of a vendetta and if there had been any expression of regret… It might not be necessary to trouble the judge with this. On December 8, the judge refused the injunction. “The plaintiffs feel aggrieved by being dragged into what I regard as a semi-political dispute and made a pawn in the game between two associations. But what they’re doing is using their eminence as players to dictate the policy of the FA.” He insisted if they can do what they did and insist on playing in the Free State jurisdiction, the IFA might as well abandon its claim in respect of status. On 2 February 1931, the trio plus McMahon were linked with selection for a game against Scotland, but IFA said that the four could not accept any invite under present circumstances. On February 13, the IFS announced that suspensions would be lifted “over the next two weeks” (without officially confirming it). The IFA’s refusal to recognise the bans led to the abandonment of an inter-league match. On February 20, the action was settled, ending this Irish soccer dispute. The players sought damages and an injunction against the Free State FA. Counsel announced a settlement had been reached following negotiations.
AFFIRMING LOYALTY
The players wrote to the Free State FA in December to say: “We wish to affirm
our loyalty to the association, and our anxiety to see the association prosper, and to ensure them that we honestly believed that under the rules we were within our rights in accepting the invitation to play in the amateur international. We now realise that our action was open to misconstruction. We undertake not to accept invitations from other football bodies in future without first submitting them for approval and further undertake to abide by all their decisions. In these circumstances we ask the association to remove the suspensions. It is our earnest desire to maintain friendly relations with the association and its members.” On February 19, each side bore its own costs. The Bohemian Three were obliged to pay their costs of the case and got no apology. The players were back with Bohs v Cork. “Horlacher was back for the first time that season to pick up his devastating partnership with Bermingham’”. On 6 January 1932, a peace conference was mooted with IFA among councils in the south. In May, the FAI turned down an offer by the IFA that in order to have peace after 10 years of war, the IFA get equal share in formation of an international committee to select teams and play games alternatively north and south, equal share in profits accruing form these games. FAI said no unless they had representation on international board.
REFUSING CAPS
Capped three times for Ireland, Bermingham also refused two more caps. Strange indeed. After retiring, Bermingham coached several sides, especially Bohs. No wonder he is still revered in Dalymount as one of their legendary soccer stars. He transferred to Dolphin FC who would go onto win the FAIFS Cup in 1932–33, before returning to Bohs as an amateur. He had attracted interest from Walsall FC and Linfield FC. He also played two seasons for Drumcondra FC in the late 1930s, returning in 1949 to coach the Bohs firstteam, and then taking over from Matt Giles, the uncle of John Giles, to manage CIE-sponsored Transport FC in 1953-54. He also had a career as a professional singer under the stage name 'George' Bermingham while retaining a strong association with Bohemian FC until his passing in November 1985. Thus ends the remarkable life story of the Dub who played with Dr Crokes and with Kerry, and then won three international soccer caps.

Kerry FC team up with Food Aid charity As part of the launch of their new home and away kits for the 2024 season, Kerry FC are setting up a food collection point this weekend in support of Tralee Food Aid’s Christmas Hamper appeal. The League of Ireland newcomers are keen to show recognition for the hard work being carried out by Tralee Food Aid during the busy festive period. The Tralee based charity are actively looking for food donations as they prepare food hampers to give to those in need in the Tralee area this Christmas, in particular to those who are homeless. As the club store is expected to be busy ahead of the launch of their 2024 New Balance home and away kits, Kerry FC ask anyone who intends to attend the club shop this coming week to bring a non-perishable item out of their press to support the appeal. “As we enter into the busy festive period, it is very important to take a step back to remember people who might be less fortunate than ourselves,” Kerry FC Media Officer Ivan Hurley said. “Our kit launch is always a special occasion and we hope

that we can use the busiest weekend of the year in our club shop to help families in need this Christmas. So the appeal is there to anyone attending the shop this weekend to bring just one item out of the press and we will happily forward all donations to the Tralee Food Appeal on
your behalf.” The Kerry FC Club Shop will be open this weekend for the 2024 kit launches. The kits will be officially launched at 9am today (Friday) and they will go on sale in the Club Shop, located in Mounthawk Park, from 10am.
The shop opening hours are as follows: Friday - 10am to 2pm and 6pm to 8pm. Saturday - 10am to 4pm. Sunday - 10am until 4pm. For further information on the Tralee Food Aid campaign, email traleefoodaid@gmail.com.
Celts and Blues to clash in Munster Cup derby Great Killarney rivals Killarney Athletic and Killarney Celtic meet on Sunday in a keenly anticipated Munster Junior Cup last 16 tie at Athletic’s home ground in Woodlawn. The Celts qualified for the last 16 thanks to a hard-fought 2-3 victory away to Coachford (Cork) on November 12. Goals by Trpimir Vrljicak, Mark Kolesnikov and Matt Keane made all the difference for the club from Derreen; the return of former Kerry FC players Vrljicak and Keane
has undoubtedly strengthened their squad. Athletic got the better of College Corinthians (also Cork) in their last 32 game with youngster Luke Doolan amongst the goals in a 0-2 win for the Blues. Celtic have mostly enjoyed the upper hand over their crosstown rivals in recent seasons – they defeated Athletic 3-1 in last season’s Premier A final - but Athletic’s recent form suggests that they mean business in 2023-24. Killarney Athletic v Killarney Celtic kicks off at midday on Sunday.

MEK Galaxy U12 GIRLS SOUTH: Killorglin 9 MEK Galaxy 0 A tough day for the girls. But the performances are getting better. Onwards & upwards. POTM Alyssa O'Connor in goal. BOYS: Well done to our U8 players yesterday who showed fantastic skill in their blitz against Mastergeeha FC. There were 4 teams for each club of five a side and all were very evenly matched games with some excellent attacking but also great defending on show. Many thanks to the hard-working coaches on both sides, a great afternoon all round. Also a mention to our U10 boys who hosted Castleisland in a blitz. U13 DIVISION 2 SOUTH: Mastergeeha 2 MEK Galaxy 3 Another fantastic game for our U13 B side which was end to end in cold conditions at Kilbrean Park. Our MEK side took the lead with a great ball in finished well by Eoin Murphy only for Mastergeeha to break and equalise. A Carson copy of the pass for the first goal produced our 2nd with Jack Galivan finishing well. We held the lead then well into the second half and had plenty of attacks to make it three before a fine top corner finish for Mastergeeha made it 2 v 2. The pressure from our MEK side paid off as they got the winner Eoin McClure playing the ball in to create the pressure which led to the goal. A fantastic performance from the lads with the bare 11 players they worked so hard
and well done to Mastergeeha again for a great and sporting game. Scorers: Jack Galivan 2 Eoin Murphy 1.
Kerry Schoolboys/ Girls League GIRLS U-14 INTER LEAGUE MATCH: Kerry 2-1 Limerick Desmond. Kerry started brightly and had two great chances to go up within 5 minutes, a decent corner from Meabh Kennedy saw Ally Russell glance just wide. Good inter play from Evanne Mason to Sofia Rybanski fed Maja Wolska for a great long-range effort. The breakthrough came on 18 minutes when the hard running Sadhbh Dowling forced a throw in, Aoibhinn O’Callaghan cleverly picked out Maja Wolska who crossed for captain Taylor Kate Leane to score. Limerick attacked but keeper Lucy Griffin and the back four held out to half time. The second half saw Limerick come into the game for their purple patch, but it was Kerry through the introduction of the fleet footed Izzy Lyons and Leona Meaney who looked more likely to score. Limerick fought hard and with 10 minutes left equalised after a defensive mix up to level matters. Daisy O’Donnell anchoring midfield along with her tenacious back four shut up shop as Clodagh Quirke commanded her area with great assurance. Kerry with 6 minutes remaining began to counterattack and seek out chances with Fleur O’Neill getting the winning score with 4 minutes left. Kerry held firm and saw out a great battle against the Limerick girls. Final score Kerry 2 -1 Limerick Desmond. Panel: Captain Taylor Kate Leane, Lucy Griffin, Shannon O’Sullivan, Clodagh Quirke, Ally Russell, Evanne Mason, Daisy O’Donnell, Niamh + Aoibhinn O’Callaghan, Abbie Fleming, Meabh Kennedy, Sofia Rybanski, Maja Wolska, Sadhbh Dowling, Izzy Lyons and Leona Meaney.
Killarney Legion GAA O’DONOGHUE CUP: Our Senior Men qualified for the final four of the blue riband East Kerry O'Donoghue Cup with a hard-fought win over Fossa in Direen on Sunday afternoon. The reigning All Ireland Junior Champions lined out without the Clifford Brothers but the supporting cast battled gamely. They led by 0-3 to 0-2 after twelve minutes with Finbarr Murphy and Ryan O’Grady on target. Finbarr struck the next three points and Peter McCarthy set up Rob Leen to make it 0-6 to 0-4 after 25 minutes. Finbarr added to his tally just before the break while James O’Donoghue made it 0-8 to 0-4. Points from Darragh Lyne, Finbarr and Ryan O'Grady made it 0-11 to 0-6 as David and Paudie Clifford were summoned into action. They made an instant impact but points from the O’Sullivan’s substitute David and Eoghan kept it at a four-point game. Brian Kelly pulled off
a top drawer save to deny David Clifford and further efforts from Finbarr, from a free, and a beauty from David O’Sullivan saw the final score read 0-16 to 0-11 in the end. The draw for the semifinals were made directly after the game and it sees Dr Crokes play Spa in Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday at 2pm while we face Kilcummin at the same venue on Sunday at the same time. Team: Brian Kelly, Peter O’Sullivan, Danny Sheahan, Rob Leen (0-1), Cian Gammell, Darragh O’Doherty (Capt.), Jonathon Lyne, Jamie Alade, Padraig Lucey, Finbarr Murphy (0-7), Darragh Lyne (0-1), Eoghan O’Sullivan (0-1), James O’Donoghue (0-1), Peter McCarthy, Ryan O’Grady (0-3). Subs Used: David O’Sullivan (0-2) for Jamie Alade, William Shine for Ryan O’Grady, Jamie O’Sullivan for Finbarr Murphy, Darragh Fleming for Peter McCarthy MATCH DAY: The O’Donoghue Cup Quarter Final game with Fossa was noteworthy as it was our first time hosting a major championship game on our new All-weather pitch. The ongoing care and maintenance of the pitch meant the surface was in great nick but there was another effort that must be acknowledged off the pitch. A big thank you to everyone who helped with the stewarding, erecting of pitch fencing, car parking, selling of lotto tickets and the operating of a shop and the scoreboard. A fine example that teamwork works as well off the pitch as it does on it. CLUB SHOP: The Club Shop is now open on request. Kilcummin GAA O’DONOGHUE CUP Q/F: Kilcummin

8.12.2023 SPORT NOTES 0-17 Firies 0-10. This was indeed a novel pairing as few could remember when these two sides last met in a championship game. Kilcummin may have been favourites but Firies with a lively young team driven on by the likes of Jack Sherwood and Niall O’Donoghue took the game to the home team early on. However our lads settled and in a good fifteen-minute spell opened up a six-point gap and led by four at the break. Kilcummin 0-10 Firies 0-6. A feature of this half was that Kilcummin scored nine of their ten points from play spread out over seven players. We generally had the better of the second half but wasted a lot of scoring opportunities allowing Firies to remain in contention. However with Keith O’Leary saving a goal chance, Chris O’Leary and Donal Maher outstanding in defence, Paul O’Shea dominant in midfield and Gary O’Leary and Danny Cronin shining upfront we imposed ourselves in the last ten minutes and ran out comfortable winners by seven points. We now play Legion in the semi-final this Sunday at 2pm. Paul O’Shea was presented by the Aquila Club Man of the Match after the game. Team: Keith O’Leary, Kevin McSweeney, Chris O’Leary, Damien O’Leary, Sean O’Leary, Dara O’Callaghan, Donal Maher, Kevin Gorman, Paul O’Shea, Mark O’Shea, Danny Cronin, Cian Foley, Eoghan O’Donovan, Gary O’Leary, Philip O’Leary. Subs used James Nagle, Mikey O’Shea, Oisin O’Leary.
Listry GAA LOTTO: 12, 14, 16, 25. €100 Philip O’Sullivan Listry, €50 Andrew O’Sullivan, €50 Carmel and Tim, €25 Ned Moloney Faha, €25 Ciara O’Reagan Rockfield. Jackpot Dec 10th €8,550. SPORT NOTES
Killarney Valley AC NATIONALS: The Athletics Ireland National Uneven Age Cross Country Championships were held in Navan, Co. Meath last Sunday. KVAC had 3 athletes qualify for this event through Munster podium finishes, Saoirse O’Shea in U11 and Jack Culloty and Kirsten Kenny both in U15. Saoirse finished 15th in a field of 193 athletes and received a Silver Team Cross Country Medal as a scoring member of the Munster Team. In the U15’s, Kirsten and Jack both finished in the top half of a huge field of 180 athletes. Only the best of the best get to Nationals, so both have had great Cross-Country seasons. INFO: All information on training schedules are on our website www.killarneyvalleyac.ie.
Killarney Rugby MINIS: Last Saturday our Minis enjoyed a trip to O’Dowd Park in Tralee for the second West Munster Blitz against the hosts and Listowel RFC. A fab morning of rugby with our players of all ages showing off their skills in the cold weather. Thanks to Tralee for the fantastic hospitality. Training continues this Saturday at 9:45am and new players welcome. Contact Dave for details on 087 2546290. U18 GIRLS: Killarney U18 girls came out on the wrong side of a titanic tussle away to Clonakilty at the weekend, recording their first loss in the league. A slow start cost the visitors as some poor defending saw them concede 14 points in the first 10 minutes to a well drilled and highly motivated Clonakilty team. Killarney played well once they got going with 2 tries from Ava O’Malley and one from Mary Ellen McDonnell on the board by half time bringing the score line to 22-17. Killarney dominated possession in the second half with great physicality on display from both teams. Lily Morris, Ella Guerin Crowley and Emma Dunican carried tirelessly, Fia Whelan kicked well from hand and Marina Eagar put in a big shift at fullback, but ultimately the home defence held firm and a try against the run of play left the final score 29-17. These teams could well be meeting again in the knockout stages of the league and if so, it will make for an interesting match. Killarney u18 girls are out again in the League pool stage v Dolphin on 16 December. Training continues on Wednesdays at 6.30 and new players are always welcome. RESULTS: U14 boys: Charleville 27-26 Killarney. U16 Girls: Killarney 46-24 Midleton. U16 boys: Killorglin 14-10 Killarney. U18 Girls: Clonakilty 29-17 Killarney.
