"He was one of our own" Killarney bids farewell to former councillor and mayor Donal O’Grady | By Chris Davies Earlier this week, the people of Killarney turned out, as they always do, to celebrate and commemorate the life of one of their own – Donal O’Grady, a man whose kindness and dedication to his community impacted so many. For over two decades, Donal served the town of Killarney, and this week that commitment was paid forward to his family in an extraordinary outpouring of love and respect. On Monday, thousands came together, lining the streets to say their final goodbyes. The queue at O’Shea’s Funeral Home stretched far along Port Road and continued uninterrupted for hours, from mid-afternoon until well into the evening. On Tuesday morning, it was much the same. St. Mary’s Cathedral filled with hundreds of locals, all there to celebrate Donal’s life – one lived with purpose, passion, and a commitment to helping others.
REMEMBERING DONAL
The heartfelt tributes that flooded into the Killarney Advertiser this week speak volumes about the man he was. Former colleagues highlight-
ed his dedication to addressing local issues like housing and youth services, and the passion he showed on projects like the Killarney Skate Park were also recognised. As I made my way to the funeral service on Tuesday morning, I passed by the Mug and Bean Café. I couldn’t help remember another side of Donal, his quiet kindness. Donal would often meet my mom for breakfast in the same café. She looked forward to those mornings, where Donal offered her his ear, his advice, and, I’m sure, a laugh or two. There was nothing special about their friendship, that was Donal’s way with so many in town and is probably why so many turned out and supported him election after election… He wasn’t just a councillor; but a good friend and a man you could genuinely trust. As Fr Kieran said during his homily, “He was one of our own—a proud Killarney man who was many things to many people.”
BEAUTIFUL SEND OFF
Donal’s send-off on Tuesday was fitting and heartfelt. His fellow Legion clubman, Mark Moriarty, led the service, while Fr Kieran O’Brien’s homily
NEWS 7
6.12.2024 captured Donal’s essence perfectly. Fr Kieran acknowledged the shock and sadness of town at Donal’s sudden passing, saying, “Just weeks ago, Donal had attended a mass for deceased fire service members and had seemed in good health… there was a real outpouring of grief, sadness, and disbelief.” He offered comfort to Donal’s family, adding, “In this town, he left his mark. His name, Donal O’Grady, will certainly live on, and you can all be so proud of his many achievements.”
LASTING IMPACT
Throughout the service, Fr Kieran and others shared stories of Donal’s contributions to Killarney. They spoke of his advocacy for mental health services and his tireless efforts in housing. Donal’s son Martin gave a touching eulogy, remembering his father’s empathy for the homeless and his belief that “every man, woman, and child deserved a roof over their head.” Martin’s words painted a picture of his dad’s life beyond politics. Donal loved travel, whether it was heading to Dublin for a Kerry match or visiting horse fairs. He loved his daily walks through town, visiting the jarvey stands, meeting his brother Seán for tea, always stopping to chat with locals along the way. These everyday moments, Martin said, gave Donal an deep understanding of the issues of the day in Killarney. Donal’s connection to the Killarney diaspora was another point of pride. Through his involvement in the Killarney-London reunions and the Killarney Town Twinning Association, he fostered lasting bonds between Killarney and communities around the world. Martin also shared how his dad found his true calling in the Fire Service after transferring from Liebherr. In 1999, Donal was elected to Killarney Town
Council, continuing a family tradition started by his late father, John, and brother Seán. He held his seat for over 20 years and served proudly as Mayor in 2010. Fr Kieran noted how proud Donal would have been to see Martin follow in his footsteps earlier this year, becoming the next generation of O’Gradys to serve Killarney.
LOVE FOR MANY THINGS
During the mass, items representing Donal’s life were brought to the altar: a family photo symbolising his deep love for his family, a Kerry jersey for his passion for football, a fire helmet reflecting his time in the Fire Service, and a Christmas decoration honouring his love for the season. A bridle represented his love for horses, rosary beads signified his faith, and his old council tie paid tribute to his political service. A picture of Killarney was also brought forward, a nod to the place he held closest to his heart.
FINAL FAREWELL
The funeral procession through Killarney was poignant. Led by a horse and cart, Donal made his final journey through the streets he had walked so many times before, accompanied by a guard of honour from his Fire Service colleagues—described as “his second family,” by Fr Kieran. On through the streets of Killarney one last time before finally being laid to rest at Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery. There’s a seanfhocal that goes: 'Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine.' It translates to: 'We live in each other’s shadows'. The deeper meaning is about how as humans, we rely on, and need the support of one another to navigate life’s challenges. For those who were lucky enough to call Donal their friend, this sentiment couldn’t ring more true. May he rest in peace.

Tributes pour in for much-loved council colleague The sudden passing of former Kerry County Councillor Donal O’Grady has left the community of Killarney and his former colleagues in local government deeply saddened. As a public representative for over 25 years, he held roles on Killarney Town Council, Kerry County Council, and even served as Mayor of Killarney in 2010-2011. His colleagues describe him as a fearless advocate who championed causes he believed in, often putting the needs of his community at the forefront. Cllr. Niall Kelleher highlighted Donal’s relentless drive to improve Killarney. “He loved the town and its people and worked tirelessly on their behalf,” he said, pointing to the Killarney Skate Park as a shining example of Donal’s tenacious lobbying and commitment to providing amenities for the town’s residents. Donal was especially vocal on issues such as housing, tenants’ rights, youth services, and the preservation of Killarney’s cultural and historical identity. John O’Donoghue remarked on Donal’s ability to give a voice to the voiceless, and his steadfast convictions, which often set him apart as a public servant who truly cared about the people he represented. “He very often championed the case for the marginalised in our society,” John noted, adding that Donal’s real legacy lies in the countless individuals he helped over the years. For those who had the privilege of working alongside him, Donal was not only a colleague but also a mentor and friend. Maura Healy-Rae recalled how
Donal guided her when she first joined Kerry County Council, providing advice and support while fostering a warm friendship. Despite occasional disagreements, Donal’s colleagues always found him to be a generous and welcoming presence. Marie Moloney echoed these sentiments, describing Donal as a well-respected figure with a deep knowledge of Killarney’s history. She noted that his personal vote count reflected the high regard in which he was held by his constituents. Beyond his political career, Donal was a proud family man. His son, Martin O’Grady, recently followed in his father’s footsteps by being elected to Kerry County Council, an achievement that brought Donal immense pride. Brendan Cronin remarked that while Donal’s passing is a tremendous loss, his legacy will endure through his family and Martin’s continued work in public service. From his tireless efforts to establish the Killarney Skate Park to his broader contributions to housing and community development, Donal’s achievements have left an indelible mark on Killarney. His colleagues and the community at large mourn his loss this week but also celebrate a life dedicated to service, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his beloved hometown.

Chamber urges public input on Dinis-Torc Loop Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce is encouraging locals to voice their support for the proposed Dinis-Torc cycleway and pedestrian route.
Killarney’s Saoirse O'Connor – who was honoured with the ‘Outstanding Performance in School Experience and Professional Practice’ Award – pictured celebrating with her dad, well-known Irish Musician, Liam O'Connor, at Dublin’s Convention Centre during the annual Hibernia College Conferring ceremony.
The Chamber’s Joint President, Johnny McGuire, confirmed a recent resubmission of the planning application for this much-anticipated project. McGuire emphasised the importance of public input, urging people to submit their views before the January 24 deadline. He said:“Anyone wishing to make a submission on the plans please do so immediately as the planning decision will be announced on the January 24.” The proposed loop, which would connect Torc Waterfall to Dinis Cottage, has been a long-awaited project for many in the community. It is expected to signif-
icantly enhance recreational opportunities for locals and tourists alike, while also boosting the local economy. At a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting Cllr John O’Donoghue asked for an proposed start date to complete the loop between Torc and Dinis. A Kerry County Council Official replied: “This project requires planning permission under the Planning and Development Act 2000 as amended. As there is a live planning application by the NPWS before the Planning Section Kerry County Council, there is a long-established and well-founded practice of not commenting on or pre-judging matters around or in relation to planning applications which are currently being assessed by the Planning Section Kerry County Council. Unless or until planning permission is granted, we cannot advise on any anticipated start date.”
Saoirse O'Connor receives Outstanding Performance award Killarney native has been recognised for her exceptional dedication to teaching with the prestigious Outstanding Performance in School Experience and Professional Practice award at Hibernia College’s recent conferring ceremony. Saoirse, a graduate of the Post-Primary Education programme, was celebrated alongside over 930 peers who earned qualifications in Primary and Post-Primary teaching or in Inclusive and Special Education. She is the daughter of renowned musician Liam O’Connor. The event, held at Dublin’s Convention Centre, highlighted the achievements of educators from across all 26 counties. The accolade reflects Saoirse’s excellence during her school placements, a core component of the programme designed to prepare future educators for real-world challenges in the classroom. Her commitment and skill not only earned her top marks but also set her
apart as a role model for aspiring teachers. Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Mary Kelly, Academic Dean at Hibernia College, said: “All of you here today will help shape futures, inspire change, and contribute to the betterment of society in ways that extend far beyond the classroom.” Saoirse’s recognition underscores her passion for education and her potential to make a meaningful impact on students’ lives. Another Kerry graduate, Clodagh Carey from Tralee, also shone at the event, receiving the Student of the Year Award for the Primary Education programme.
Donal O’Grady loved Killarney – and it showed Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has paid a warm tribute to the late Donal O’Grady whose sad and unexpected passing has come as a huge shock to everybody in the town. The business organisation said Donal was a great public servant who always and forever had Killarney’s best interests at heart and he worked tirelessly and with great determination to improve facilities and living conditions for everybody. Chamber said the O’Grady family has been one of Kerry’s great political dynasties as Donal’s father, John, his brother Seán and his son Martin have all been elected at a local level to represent Killarney and its people. In a statement, Chamber Co-Presidents, Johnny McGuire and Padraig Treacy, said Donal played a very active and progressive role in so many facets of Killarney life. “His commitment to many community causes was admirable and he leaves a real legacy of public service of which he and his family and supporters can be immensely proud,” they said.
The business representative body added that Donal was a great supporter of the Tidy Towns campaign and the Killarney Looking Good project and he campaigned hard to keep the town looking its best and to ensuring the necessary supports were put in place to help the town to prosper. The new skate park, adjacent to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre, can also be attributed to his tenacity as he campaigned long and hard, over several years, for it to be put in place. “The fun and laughter that will ring out from that facility in the years to come will be a fitting legacy to Donal’s memory,” Chamber said. “He will be remembered for his commitment and contribution over many years of faithful service during a long and distinguished career in local politics." Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce added: “Donal O’Grady loved Killarney – and it showed. He always put the welfare and the wellbeing of his town and its people first and his was a strong and influential independent voice."

As the Christmas season approaches, there is no better time to give back to our community, and in Killarney, we have a special opportunity to do just that. The Killarney Coffee Cup Project is partnering with Christmas in Killarney to host a heartfelt charity drive, asking locals and visitors alike to bring any unused 2GoCups they may have accumulated at home, in their cars, or at the office. This is your chance to contribute in a simple yet impactful way – and make this Christmas even more meaningful for those in need. How it works is simple: Gather any 2GoCups you’ve collected
over time. For every cup collected, the value of that cup will be donated to the charity ALONE. ALONE, a charity dedicated to supporting older people to age at home throughout Killarney and Kerry, will benefit from your donation. Frank Dillon, Head of Fundraising for ALONE said: “We would like to sincerely thank the great people in Killarney for their clever initiative and generosity in supporting ALONE. Christmas is such an important time for all of us in ALONE with so many people living on their own throughout the area. Our services will run all over the Christmas season. You
can contact ALONE for support of advice on 0818 222 024.” You can drop off your 2GoCups to the Christmas Markets and at Santa’s Grotto at Deenagh Lodge and know that your gesture will help fund important programs that provide companionship and assistance to those in need, particularly the elderly who may be facing a lonely Christmas season. Why is this important? This initiative not only gives us a chance to declutter and get those cups we’ve accumulated back into circulation but also provides a unique way to support an incredible cause during the Christmas season. It’s a reminder that sometimes, small actions can have a big impact – and
that together, we can make a real difference in the lives of others. So, this festive season, let's clear out those accumulated 2GoCups and spread some Christmas cheer! Your donation, no matter how small, will help ensure that Christmas in Killarney is a time of joy for everyone, including those who need our support the most. Huge business supports outlined at Chamber gathering The Kerry Local Enterprise Office and Kerry County Council have paid out close on €33 million to local businesses under the terms of various support schemes and help programmes implemented after the Covid-19 pandemic. The information was provided to those in attendance at the final Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce lunch of the year which was held in The Laurels Restaurant on Wednesday. Head of the Kerry Local Enterprise Office, Tomás Hayes, who was the guest speaker, said his organisation – a unit of Kerry County Council – succeeded the former County Enterprise Board in 2014, when there was a large-scale re-evaluation of roles. The updated brief was to work with small-scale manufacturing and exports and innovative products and services with 10 or fewer people employed. He said the remit has again changed gradually over the past two years with a much stronger emphasis on the retail and hospitality sectors and his office has been increasingly involved with the increased cost of business programmes and schemes over the past couple of months. He said that post-pandemic, they have
been working on the administration of the two restart schemes, small business assistance and business continuity schemes, the increased cost of business programmes and the power-up grants. “We’re not just dealing with a few hundred applications here – we’re dealing with thousands of applications. We reckon over the last period of time we’ve probably dished out in the region of €33 million to the local economy. That can only be done with the teams within Kerry County Council across revenue, finance and the Local Enterprise Office. “That has been a huge challenge that, to a certain extent, has probably distracted us from our core activity,” My Hayes stated. He said he was delighted to now be in a position to advise Chamber members of new enterprise projects that are coming through, particularly a new green-forbusiness scheme and energy efficiency grants, which are aimed at focusing more on sustainability. Details of the new schemes were out-

lined at the lunch by Conor Slattery who is a sustainability-in-business advisor. He said the free green-for-business scheme is aimed at smaller businesses who can apply for inclusion into the Local Enterprise Office which will, in turn, appoint a consultant to assess and advise each business in terms of energy and fuel consumption, lighting and heating and renewable energy options. It is open to all sectors with a cap on businesses with 50 employees or more and, in many cases, the grant is being used for equipment upgrades. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Co-President, Johnny McGuire, availed of the opportunity at the lunch to acknowledge the recent passing of two people he described as “great Killarney champions.” He said Andy O’Sullivan, a great GAA stalwart and proprietor of the Killarney Carpet and Furniture Centre, and former councillor Donal O’Grady both left a lasting legacy in the town through their commitment to the betterment of the community. “It is fitting that their children are continuing their legacy into the next generation,” he said.
He also praised Fexco founder Brian McCarthy who was inducted into the Order of Inisfallen scheme, which is an awards programme organised by the Chamber and Kerry County Council. “His contribution to the economic life of our county and town is immeasurable,” Mr McGuire said. He also thanked all the candidates in the recent general election and, in particular, Linda Gordon Kelleher who facilitated a meeting between the Chamber Executive and the Minister for Finance, Jack Chambers, at which important issues relating to the future of Killarney town were highlighted and acknowledged. The Chamber chief said Killarney was delighted to have secured a fourth consecutive gold medal in the recent SuperValu National Tidy Towns Awards. “I want to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of Kerry County Council management and outdoor staff, who are a shining example of public service, and to thank the many local volunteers for their commitment to keeping Killarney Looking Good,” Mr McGuire said. This week also marked the 50th Meitheal outing of the year in the national park and the regular volunteers were joined by 18 staff of Irish Water whose input was of great benefit. “We have had great support this year from various businesses and voluntary groups outside of our town and their input and the increased resources for the staff of the national park are greatly appreciated,” he said.

€452,060 raised for 4 Kerry charities by Radio Kerry Bingo Players On Saturday, November 30, an additional €86,868—the latest proceeds from Radio Kerry Radio Bingo—was presented to the four charity partners: Kerry Cancer Support Group, Kerry Hospice, Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House, and Comfort for Chemo Kerry. Representatives from all four charities joined Joe McGill on the Saturday Supplement on Radio Kerry. They shared details of the projects they are currently undertaking and explained how the latest funds from Radio Kerry Radio Bingo will be used. Jack Shanahan, Chairman of the Kerry Hospice Foundation, said: “Kerry Hospice Foundation is hugely appreciative of the continuing support from Radio Kerry and its listeners. We will shortly begin groundworks on our much-needed five-bed extension to our inpatient unit. Delivering world-class palliative care requires continuous invest-
ment in both people and facilities. We will pay in full for this multi-million-euro extension, as well as fund day-to-day expenses, including wages, in the pursuit of our mission.” Comfort for Chemo Kerry welcomed the latest allocation of funds, saying: "Comfort for Chemo Kerry thanks Radio Kerry and their listeners for their continued support, which will ensure that the
people of Kerry can receive chemotherapy on their own doorstep. All of the funds will go toward a state-of-the-art chemotherapy unit, for which the design has now been agreed." Breda Dyland of Kerry Cancer Support Group stated: “Kerry Cancer Support Group is, as always, extremely grateful for the support received from Radio Kerry Bingo. The
funding has been crucial in addressing a 40% increase in demand for our services over the past year. It will also contribute to the purchase of a new bus for our Limerick route, ensuring continued accessibility for those who need our Healthlink transport. We extend heartfelt thanks to the bingo players, whose involvement directly aids in maintaining and expanding our essential services.” Marisa Reidy of Recovery Haven said: “On behalf of Recovery Haven Kerry, we would like to thank everyone at Radio Kerry for involving us in this amazing fundraising initiative from the beginning. Receiving this kind of funding is incredible and will help us immensely in continuing to provide vital, free support services to those affected by cancer and their families. This, of course, would not be possible without the support of all the listeners who play Radio Kerry Bingo week after week. We hope they know just how much their support means to us all. It is always a pleasure to work with Radio Kerry, alongside these other wonderful cancer support charities, and we never take the generosity of the people of Kerry for granted.” Numbers are broadcast five times per day on Radio Kerry and are also posted daily on Radio Kerry's Facebook and Instagram Stories. Bingo books, priced at €5 each, are available from over 66 outlets countywide. Radio Kerry does not benefit financially from the Radio Bingo game.

The final Killarney Chamber lunch of the year, held at The Laurels Restaurant, provided an opportunity to discuss the upcoming festivities and reinforce the importance of supporting local businesses.

The Killarney connection to the 70th Anniversary of ‘White Christmas’ This year marks the 70th anniversary of Bing Crosby’s iconic Christmas movie , ‘White Christmas.’ While many know the song that gave the movie its name, few realise that the B-side to this classic is ‘Christmas in Killarney’. Though not a musical masterpiece, the song has gained popularity across the Atlantic, putting Killarney on the international stage. As ever Killarney is pulling out all the
stops to celebrate Christmas. The town is beautifully illuminated, and there are fantastic Santa parades, ice skating, and Christmas markets as part of the ‘Christmas in Killarney’ festival. The 1954 film ‘White Christmas’, starring Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen, is a timeless seasonal classic, soundtracked by the unforgettable music and lyrics of Irving Berlin,. While the film premiered on October 14, 1954 the song that gives it its name is two years older.

East Kerry GAA supports blood donation drive
The East Kerry GAA Board is partnering with the Irish Blood Transfusion Service for a blood donation drive in Killarney Heights from December 9 to 12 in honour of Oisín Kelly.
Oisín, a member of Naomh Eoin GAA in Carlow, passed away in August 2023 after battling osteosarcoma (bone cancer). During his illness, he relied heavily on blood and platelet transfusions, highlighting their critical role in cancer treatment. Oisín's campaign aims to raise awareness about blood donation, particularly among young people. His girlfriend, Mairead Bennett (Spa Club, Killarney), and his family encourage everyone to register to donate at: https://www.giveblood.ie/campaigns/ oisin-kelly/ The campaign's importance is under-
scored by the experience of Kerry senior panellist Sean O'Leary. After a serious car accident in 2021, Sean needed blood transfusions but faced a critical shortage. Blood had to be imported from the UK for his life-saving treatment. "Every Drop Counts, I Know," the campaign emphasises the vital need for blood donation. The East Kerry GAA and the Irish Blood Transfusion Service urge the community to spread the word and register to donate. The campaign launch took place at Spa GAA Club with members of Spa GAA, Spa LGFA, St Paul's Basketball Ladies and Kerry footballer David Clifford.

Marie meets Mary Fuller “Nobody is ordinary, if you know where to look.” ~ Maeve Binchy. Given Mary Fuller's 'special' career path in life, and as a huge fan of the Irish writer herself, isn't it funny how a quotation by her idol could be so fitting for Mary, who has a unique natural talent to observe, nurture, and enhance the lives of so many? Mary Fuller recently retired from Killarney Community College as a SEN (Special Education Needs) teacher, so I thought I’d catch up with her at the Arbutus Hotel. Let’s start from the very beginning, Mary, shall we? “Are you ready for a rollercoaster ride around Slea Head and the Wild Atlantic Way!” “I am one of seven children born to Pat Buckley and Dr. Norrie Buckley, of whom four survived. We were brought up here at the Arbutus Hotel, where my parents worked and ran the hotel.” Wait a minute, Mary, I thought you said your mother was a doctor? “My mother was a doctor, yes, Marie, at St. Mary of the Angels. She also ran this hotel with Dad and was widowed at the young age of 51. In hindsight, I think she threw her pain of loss into helping others. I think subconsciously I learned a lot from my mother. We loved living at the hotel. My grandfather Tim Buckley was a sheep farmer in Rathmore. In 1911, he emigrated to New York, and after 14 years, he returned with enough savings to buy the Arbutus Hotel. I'm delighted we decided to meet here, Marie.” “I qualified with a degree in Arts, English, and Psychology, followed by a Higher Diploma. I know you might find it hard to believe, Marie, but I was a little bit wild! I spent most of my teenage years in boarding schools. When I’d completed my studies, emigration was hugely on the rise. In 1984, 120,000 people emigrated from Ireland, many to London, but I chose Inverness, Scotland, and worked with L’Arche, who supported adults with disabilities, for two years at the age of 25. It was so beautiful there, much like Killarney. But when my father died at the
age of 52, I returned home. I recall seeing Mike Fuller out the window of the car after the funeral and thinking to myself, ‘Is he still around after all the emigration?’ I remembered my father sending me in, hand in hand with Mike, on our first day of school.” “On returning home, I took up a job with Brother Con Leane at St. John of God’s in Tralee, where my main focus was to teach social and living skills to adults. I admired Brother Con for his mission to repatriate the people of Kerry back home instead of them living in Dublin or Kildare to obtain such skills. I bumped into Mike Fuller a few times while living at home, and we were married in 1988 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, where we made our Communion and Confirmation and, later down the line, christened our two boys, Pat and Brendan. I never really stopped working throughout. Maternity leave was a mere six weeks, and at this point, I was working at Kerry Parents and Friends in the Old Mon with Tony Darmondy, teaching social and living skills, before moving to Tiernaboul at St. Anne’s Literacy Education. Even listening to our chats now, I feel so privileged to say that I have made a difference in people’s lives.” “While still working in Tiernaboul, I got a call from Eamon Fitzgerald, principal at
the time of Killarney Community College, asking me to set up a special class. Many of the students had smaller needs like dyslexia and dyspraxia that are adaptable to mainstream classrooms today. I think it’s wonderful to see how the education system has progressed since I was a child. I wanted the new classroom to be like a nest that the students could fly in and out of, having the independence to enjoy work experience and benefit from continuous assessment, such as the JCSP (Junior Certificate Schools Programme) and the Leaving Certificate Applied, where students are more tuned into real life than books. A complete game-changer within education.” “In 2008, under Principal Fiona O’Brien, at Killarney Community College, I took up a full-time post with a Special Education Class. Looking back, I have been at the College with all of the principals to date – Tim Healy (1st year before heading to boarding school), Pat Favier, Eamon Fitzgerald, Fiona O’Brien, and the current Principal, Stella Loughnane, before I retired.” As an SNA myself, I know only too well that the ebbs and flows of any given day warrant forward thinking but with the ability to change direction at the drop of a hat to achieve a similar goal. What
has kept your motivation over the years, Mary. “It can be intense but in equal measures, Marie. I suppose I’ve advocated more for my students than I ever would for myself over the years. I’ve made adaptations within the classroom, such as no homework. In fact, leave the bag in school. What parent of a special needs child needs to be facing into homework after a long day on both ends? We’ve already won the day! For many families, it is a journey of grief, and with that goes a daily level of understanding. I have been absolutely honored to work with some of the best SNAs in the country, most recently with Liz Elbel, who is a credit to her profession. I suppose trust was a huge privilege I was entrusted with over the years, both by parents and principals. In recent years, I found anxiety management and sensory circuits to be a huge release, and how blessed I was with my location at KCC, right beside the National Park.” So what is the plan for retirement, Mary? I believe you’re just back from Vegas? “Las Vegas to Ballyheigue and crosswords with Mike at Mary Donal’s. Separate crosswords so there’s no 'cross words,' Marie. With an accompanying pint, it’s just as lovely as Vegas. I can’t wait to spend more time with my son Pat, who coincidentally has taken up a similar career as an SNA at Killorglin Community College, and my son Brendan, his wife Eve, and our two granddaughters, Hannah and Nell. But to get back to Vegas, we did a helicopter ride of the Grand Canyon. Something that scares me a lot with vertigo. I was already having difficulty coming down the escalator when Mike announced he’d paid for an upgrade so the two of us could sit up front of the helicopter! Can you imagine? I reverted back to my lovely Maeve Binchy, who once said, ‘Do something every day that scares you." I thought of the helter-skelter nature of Mary’s colourful career and how she sat with me so calm and upbeat, always smiling and never seeming one bit tired. I think Mary had gained strength, courage, experience, confidence, gratitude, and empathy from every experience she encountered, doing what she loves best: helping people.

PARENTING IN A GEN Z WORLD
Insights from a teen's perspective
My name is Abbie McGuire, and I’m a 15-year-old transition year student at St. Brigid’s Killarney. As part of my school’s TY program, I am currently completing a six-week block of work experience with the Killarney Advertiser, working every Friday. For one of my articles, I decided to conduct a survey among my peers to explore some of the unique stresses and challenges teenage girls face in today’s world. The goal of this project was to provide parents with insights into our experiences and help bridge the generational gap in understanding. Below, I present my findings and observations based on the thirty responses I gathered.
THE THINGS PARENTS DO THAT ANNOY US
The first question I posed to my peers was, “What are the top three things your parents do that annoy you?” The overwhelming majority pointed to com-
plaints about phone usage as the number one grievance. Personally, I can relate to this frustration, as it’s something I hear frequently from my own parents. Interestingly, many of my friends and I feel that our parents use their phones just as much as we do - though for different purposes - yet their complaints seem focused solely on our habits. The second most common annoyance was parents’ frequent criticism of messy rooms. This, too, is something I hear all the time, and from talking to my friends, it’s clear that none of us expect this issue to go away anytime soon. While we understand that our parents simply want to help, we also believe there’s room to appreciate that a spotless room isn’t always realistic or necessary. The third response highlighted the pressure parents place on academics. As teenagers, we know our parents have our best interests at heart, but it can be difficult for them to understand the weight of the pressure we already place on ourselves. Their added expectations can sometimes amplify this stress. Clinical psychologist Erynn Macciomei from Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital has noted that “the pervasive high pressure to achieve impacts kids’ overall level of emotional stress” and can contribute to greater concerns like anxiety and depression. This observation resonated deeply with my findings.
THE STRESSES PARENTS DON’T UNDERSTAND
My second survey question asked, “What are the top three stresses for teenage girls that parents don’t understand?” Unsurprisingly, the number one stress identified by my peers was the pressure to conform to modern beauty standards. Many teenage girls feel that our parents can’t fully relate to this issue, as they grew up in a time before social media and influencers. The constant
exposure to curated, unrealistic images online creates a culture of comparison that can be overwhelming. Girls feel immense pressure to look a certain way, often striving for an ideal that isn’t even attainable. The second major stress was the impact of social media itself. While this ties closely to beauty standards, it also includes other aspects of online life. Apps like Snapchat and TikTok have become primary ways for Gen Z to communicate and maintain friendships. However, the societal expectation to be constantly available and responsive can feel exhausting. Fear of missing out and the pressure to keep up with group chats and trends can create a relentless sense of obligation. Finally, academics emerged as another significant stressor. This overlaps with the earlier discussion on parental expectations but underscores the weight that school-related pressures place on teenagers’ mental health.
THE RULES WE WISH WERE DIFFERENT
The third question in my survey asked, “What are the top three things your parents don’t let you do that you feel they should?” The most common answers revolved around independence and curfews. While many of us are allowed to go into town or have sleepovers, we feel ready for greater freedom, such as attending concerts or taking day trips to cities like Dublin without parental supervision. These experiences, while intimidating for some parents, could teach us valuable skills in independence and problem-solving, preparing us for adulthood. It’s understandable that parents focus on the potential dangers, but the benefits of allowing us to navigate these situations independently cannot be overstated. With the right guidance and
trust, these experiences can help us grow in confidence and maturity.
THE HABITS PARENTS DON’T APPROVE OF
The fourth question addressed “the top bad habits you have that your parents don’t or wouldn’t approve of.” Unsurprisingly, staying up late and excessive phone use were common responses. Other habits included unhealthy eating, vaping, drinking, and procrastination. These are behaviours parents understandably worry about, but they also provide an opportunity for open discussions about making better choices.
REFLECTIONS AND CONCLUSIONS
From analysing the results of my survey, it’s clear that there is a gap in understanding between Gen Z and their parents when it comes to stresses and annoyances. The issues we face today— particularly surrounding social media and academics—can feel overwhelming. Parents might not always realise how their responses to these challenges affect us. While it’s tempting to respond with rules or restrictions, I believe that fostering open conversations and trying to see the world from their child’s perspective can go a long way in easing tensions and improving relationships. That said, it’s also worth acknowledging that parents’ concerns often come from a place of love and care. The findings about beauty standards, for instance, highlight why parents might feel worried about their teenagers’ social media use. Recognising this mutual care and striving for better communication could help bridge the gap between generations. Ultimately, understanding, empathy, and dialogue are key. By working together to navigate these challenges, I believe parents and teenagers can build stronger, more supportive relationships.

Healy Raes open to propping up coalition
Michael Healy-Rae Independent TD for Kerry, has indicated that both he and his brother Danny Healy-Rae would consider taking on ministerial roles if they are offered during government negotiations.
As Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael fall just shy of forming a majority coalition, the involvement of Independents like the HealyRaes may become pivotal in securing a stable government. Michael, speaking on Radio Kerry after his election, said he was open to discussions, “My phone is always on, and I am available to talk.” However, he stressed his independence, declaring, “I won’t be a yes man,” signaling that any cooperation would depend on the government addressing key issues for Kerry and rural Ireland. This development follows a commanding performance in the 2024 General Election, where Michael Healy-Rae topped the poll with 18,596 first-preference votes, a personal best and his third consecutive time leading the constituency. Danny Healy-Rae was elected on the fourth count with 13,239 votes, reasserting the Healy-Rae family’s political dominance in Kerry. In his victory speech, Danny paid tribute to their late father, Jackie Healy-Rae, whose legacy continues to influence their political approach. The election also saw Sinn Féin's Pa Daly claim the second seat with 13,751 votes, supported by transfers from running mate Stephanie O’Shea. Fianna Fáil celebrated significant gains,
The event focused on the challenges and opportunities of sustainability in business and featured a panel discussion with inspiring business leaders from left: Shane Finn, Outwest Clothing, Dingle; Jonathan McCrea, Broadcaster, Cahersiveen native; Geraldine Casey, MD Retail, AIB; Aurelien Gilbert, Tricel TK, Killarney and Neil Grant, The Brehon Hotel. with Minister Norma Foley retaining her seat and Michael Cahill getting elected on his debut. Cahill’s election now means there is a vacant seat in the Kenmare Municipal District for Kerry County Council. Fine Gael faced a major setback, losing its Kerry representation for the first time in years. If Independents like the Healy-Raes enter government talks, their influence could be crucial in shaping the next coalition and securing concessions for rural communities, transportation, and local development. Their potential interest in ministerial positions adds another layer of intrigue to ongoing negotiations.

Ballydribeen residents’ final push for playground project The Ballydribbeen Residents’ Association is making a heartfelt appeal for support to bring a long-awaited playground project to fruition. Located in one of the town's most densely populated residential areas, Ballydribbeen has seen the construction of over 330 houses across multiple housing developments over the past two decades. The addition of a playground promises to be a transformative amenity for local families with children. The playground is planned for the grounds of the Dereen Sports Centre, situated near Killarney Celtic FC and Legion GAA Club. Once completed, it will serve as a valuable resource for the entire com-
munity. The association has already organised several successful fundraising events, such as raffles and cake sales. Local club Killarney Celtic recently hosted a soccer tournament and generously donated the proceeds to the cause. Additionally, the project was part of the Tesco Token Campaign. Their efforts so far have helped raise €8,000. Despite this success, the group is still €2,000 short of their €10,000 goal. "This is a much-needed facility for chil-
dren in the area," said Chairperson Liam Grimes. "The universal playground will be open to all of Killarney and designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring it caters to children with additional needs." The project will cost a lot more than the 10,000-fundraising goal, but the residents are hopeful to receive additional support from the local authority. “We are actively preparing applications for the local authority LEADER fund which if successful, will bring us significantly closer to getting the playground. It is important that we do our fundraising also” Liam added. Although Ballydribbeen has experienced rapid growth over the years, it still lacks essential amenities for children. The play-
6.12.2024 ground's location near existing sports facilities will create a hub of activity, adding vibrancy to an already dynamic area. "We believe this playground will become a cornerstone of the community, offering a space where families, friends, and neighbours can connect and create lasting memories," said Iza Dian, speaking on behalf of the Ballydribeen Residents’ Association team. "Our project aims to foster social interaction, host events, and provide a welcoming, inclusive space for everyone." The group are inviting the community to support the project by giving a donation (no matter how small) through their gofundme page.

Tánaiste welcomes UK plans to reform Troubles Legacy Act Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin has expressed support for the UK government’s commitment to “substantively reform” the contentious Troubles Legacy Act. In a statement released earlier this week, Mr. Martin acknowledged the efforts of Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn to find a collaborative way forward that aligns with the principles of the Stormont House Agreement. "In our discussions and in his address to the House of Commons, the Secretary of State has outlined a pathway to reform the Act in a substantive manner, which is welcome,” Mr. Martin
said. “He also reaffirmed his commitment to continued discussions between the British and Irish governments, as co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement, on this issue. I fully share this hope. More work remains to be done, and we will continue and intensify our efforts to this end," he added. Hilary Benn emphasised the UK government’s intention to repeal and replace the Legacy Act. During his speech at the House of Commons, he highlighted specific measures aimed at addressing concerns surrounding the legislation. "This order will resolve all the human rights deficiencies identified by the Northern Ireland High Court in February, as well as an issue highlighted by the Court of Appeal in September,"
Mr. Benn said. "If adopted by Parliament, the order will remove all provisions from the Act related to the immunity scheme, which could have allowed individuals responsible for heinous terrorist acts to seek immunity from prosecution via the Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR)." Mr. Benn further noted that the reforms would restore individuals' ability to bring Troubles-related cases to civil courts, a right denied under the existing Act. Mr. Martin reiterated Ireland’s key concerns regarding the reforms, emphasising compliance with the European Convention on Human Rights and earning the trust of victims and survivors.
Major drug seizure in Castleisland On Tuesday morning, Gardaí seized suspected drugs valued at €40,000 in a targeted operation. As part of ongoing investigations led by the Kerry Divisional Drug Unit, the operation involved coordinated efforts from the Armed Support Unit and local Garda units. A day of action in the Castleisland area saw searches conducted at seven residential properties, leading to the discovery of suspected cocaine and cannabis. In addition to the drugs, Gardaí seized three registered firearms, and a range of items linked to criminal enterprises. Two individuals were arrested in connection with the operation: a man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s. They were taken to a Garda Station in the Southern Region, where they are being detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007.
Message left at scene of fatal NY shooting New evidence has emerged in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, suggesting the suspect may have left a cryptic message on bullet casings found at the crime scene, authorities revealed. According to police sources, words including "deny," "depose," and "defend" were inscribed on the live rounds and casings left behind by the gunman. Investigators believe each bullet and casing bore a single word, potentially signalling
an intended message. A shocking surveillance video obtained by Fox News Digital shows Thompson walking along a New York City sidewalk before being ambushed by a masked assailant dressed in a black hooded jacket and carrying a backpack. The gunman approached Thompson from behind, drew a handgun, and fired multiple shots. At one point, the firearm appeared to jam, prompting the assailant to strike it before pursuing the victim, who attempted to flee. The attack occurred near the Hilton Ho-
tel in Midtown Manhattan. Following the shooting, the suspect fled on a bicycle, disappearing into Central Park. Contrary to initial reports, the NYPD confirmed the bike was not a traceable Citibike. Authorities are examining additional evidence left near the scene, including a cellphone found in a nearby alley and a discarded cup retrieved from a Starbucks trash can. Surveillance images released by the NYPD show the suspect, who remains at large, in what appears to be a targeted killing.

Guinness in short supply across UK Guinness supplies to UK pubs in the lead-up to Christmas are being lim limited by its producer, Diageo, follow following an "exceptional demand" surge over the past three weeks.
Marian Price to sue Disney over ‘Say Nothing’ series Marian Price, a prominent figure during Northern Ireland's Troubles, has initiated legal action against Disney+ following her portrayal as being responsible for the killing of Jean McConville in the streaming platform's new series, Say Nothing. The series dramatises the 1972 murder and secret burial of McConville, one of the "Disappeared" – 17 individuals abducted, killed, and buried by republican paramilitaries during the Troubles. The allegations stem from a storyline in the series, which is based on Patrick Radden Keefe's 2018 book of the same name. Jean McConville, a widowed mother of ten, was abducted and killed by the IRA on allegations of being an informer. Her remains were uncovered in 2003 at Shelling Hill Beach, Co. Louth, by the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains. To date,
no one has been prosecuted for her death. Ms. Price, who also goes by Marian McGlinchey, has firmly denied involvement in the crime and has called the depiction "egregious and unfounded." Her legal representatives argue the allegations are baseless and have been sensationalised for the sake of boosting the series' popularity. In a statement, Peter Corrigan of Phoenix Law, acting on behalf of Ms. Price, said: "The publication in question depicts our client, Marian Price, as the person to whom was responsible for murdering Ms Jean McConville. Mrs Price has initiated legal proceedings as a result. Given the context, it is difficult to envisage a more egregious allegation than the one to which has been levelled against our client." Disney+ has yet to comment on the lawsuit.
Despite operating at full production ca carestricpacity, Diageo has imposed order restric tions across Great Britain. The brand's growing popularity among women and reyounger drinkers, coupled with the re cent rugby internationals, has intensified pressure on supply. In response to rising demand, Diageo stratehas adopted a weekly allocation strate gy to ensure adequate stock availability spokesthroughout the festive season. A spokes person for the company stated: “Over the past month, we have seen exceptional consumer demand for Guinness in Great Britain. We have maximised supply and
are working proactively with our customers to efficiently manage distribution to the trade.” Guinness has been outperforming broader market trends, according to CGA, a food and drinks industry research firm. While overall beer consumption fell slightly between July and October, Guinness keg sales grew by over 20%. The company has been heavily investing in its St James's Gate brewery in Dublin and constructing a new brewery in County Kildare. Simultaneously, Diageo has ramped up its marketing efforts, collaborating with influencers and celebrities like singer Lewis Capaldi and actor Jason Momoa to boost Guinness’ appeal. This strategic push has bolstered Guinness’ profile, particularly among a younger demographic, contributing to the supply strain as Christmas approaches.
Bitcoin surges past $100,000 Bitcoin has surpassed the $100,000 milestone, with its value reaching $103,280 (£81,160) at the time of writing this on Thursday. This marked a 7.9% increase in the past 24 hours, according to data from XE.com. The surge marks a high point in a rally that began on November 5, coinciding with the day of the U.S. presidential election. Since that date, Bitcoin’s value has climbed roughly 45%. The world’s largest cryptocurrency crossed the historic threshold amid market excitement following a significant political development. Former President Donald Trump announced a cryptocurrency advocate as his pick for the chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Paul Atkins, who previously served as an SEC commissioner during George W. Bush's administration, is a strong proponent of cryptocurrency and has consistently argued against excessive market regulation. In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed confidence in Atkins' approach to fostering economic growth through innovative financial markets. He stated: "He believes in the promise of robust, innovative capital markets that are responsive to the needs of investors and that provide capital to make our economy the best in the world." Bitcoin's rapid rise and Trump's SEC pick are being closely watched as signals of a shifting landscape for cryptocurrency and its regulation in the U.S.

Hickey's unbroken run of 21 Sliabh Luachra journals The recently published 21st edition of the Sliabh Luachra Journal is a treasure trove of the local history and culture of the region. Edited by the renowned journalist Donal Hickey, this year’s edition delves into a range of fascinating stories, from the tragic to the triumphant. Hickey, the editor of all 21 editions of the Sliabh Luachra Journal, will be featured on the Saturday Supplement on Radio Kerry on December 7. The programme will delve into the stories from the latest edition and celebrate Hickey’s invaluable contribution to local history. One such story is that of Nurse Ellie Buckley, a native of Knocknagree who
tragically passed away in 1942 while serving as a nurse in London. Her grave was recently discovered, shedding light on the sacrifices made by Irish nurses during World War II. The journal also highlights the vibrant history of local communities. Christy Lehane explores the bustling fair days of Knocknagree, while Ben Brosnan documents the changing landscape of local grocery stores in Kilcummin. Music enthusiasts will be delighted to read Bryan O’Leary’s personal reflection on the legendary Jimmy Doyle and his music. The journal also features a tribute to Dr. Elsie Quinlan, a remarkable Irish missionary who dedicated her life to serving others in South Africa.

SEM students raise funds for Lions Club
Students from Transition Year at St. Brendan's College recently presented a generous donation of over €850 to the Killarney Lions Club's annual Christmas Food Appeal.
Student exchange scheme strengthens ties with Pleinfeld The Killarney Town Twinning Association have announced a collaboration with St Brendan’s College, Killarney, and its twin town partners in Germany, facilitating an exciting exchange programme for students from St Brendan’s College and Gymnasium College, Roth. This initiative aligns with the association’s mission to promote cross-cultural, sporting, and educational exchanges while enhancing Killarney’s international presence. The idea for the exchange was first proposed over two years ago by Killarney Town Twinning Association officials and enthusiastically supported by St Brendan’s College Principal Sean Coffey. With the guidance of German teacher Angela Daly, the vision began to take shape. On December 13, a group of students and teachers from St Brendan’s College will embark on their journey to Germany, marking the start of what is hoped to be a long-standing collaboration between Killarney and the communities of Pleinfeld and Roth. The students will experience a rich
cultural immersion, including visits to the renowned Nuremberg Christmas Market and the Franconian Lake District. They will also attend classes at Gymnasium College in Roth, offering a glimpse into German education and culture. In March 2025, German students from Roth will reciprocate by visiting Killarney, staying with the families of Irish students who participated in the December trip. This exchange promises to forge meaningful friendships and foster greater understanding between the two communities. The Killarney Town Twinning Association has been instrumental in organising this exchange. Chairperson Sean Counihan, Secretary Sheila Dickson, and Treasurer Micheal O’Leary recently addressed parents and students during an information evening hosted by Angela Daly and Mr. O’Sullivan, who will accompany the group to Germany. Further strengthening the programme is the involvement of James O’Shea, the newly appointed Irish Consul General in Munich. A native of Killarney, James will meet with the students, teachers, and members of the Pleinfeld Town Twinning Association during their visit. His connections, including discussions with Twinning Association Chair Josef Miehling, highlight the importance of this initiative on both sides of the partnership.
The funds were raised through a "no uniform day" initiative organised by the students. The donation will be used to support local families in need during the festive season. "We are incredibly proud of our stu-
dents for their initiative and generosity," said Eimear Buckley, TY Coordinator at St. Brendan's College. "This is a fantastic example of young people making a positive difference in their community." The presentation was attended by John Fuller from the Killarney Lions Club and several Transition Year students, including Fionn Doyle, Shay McCormack, Cathal Regan, Rory O'Connor, Thomas Harrison, Ian O'Leary, Ivan O'Shea, Conor Regan, and Jack Spillane.

Rovanperä backs World Rally bid Two-time World Rally Championship champion Kalle Rovanperä has thrown his weight behind Kerry’s bid to host a round of the world championship after making his Irish debut at the Killarney Historic Rally. The Finnish rally star, who competed in a Toyota Starlet alongside co-driver Jonne Halttunen, was impressed by the challenging roads and the enthusiastic fan base.
"At least the roads are difficult enough for the World Championship, and it's clear that the fans are actually ready for it," Rovanperä said at the finish in Killarney on Sunday evening. Despite an early electrical issue that hampered their progress, Rovanperä and Halttunen still managed to set some impressive stage times, including the fastest time on the second run over the iconic Moll's Gap stage.
Local hero Rob Duggan’s Ford Escort was just 1.5 seconds down on the factory Toyota driver over the famous stage. “I wanted that one,” said Rovanperä. “Everybody had talked about Moll’s Gap being special and it was probably my favourite stage. I knew nobody had beaten Rob Duggan in this one, so it was nice to do. I think he lives at one end of the stage and goes to work at the other end, so he knows the road quite well. I have to say,

he was quick – the other drivers were really fast on this event.” Duggan won the modified class for the second time in a row, taking the win by 18.6s from Declan Gallagher’s Starlet. “It took a two-time world champion to beat me up the Gap. I’m OK with that,” said Duggan at the finish ramp on Saturday evening. Gallagher was co-driven by Kilcummin’s John McCarthy. Colin O’Donoghue and Kieran O’Donoghue were third on the category despite an overheating engine in their Ford Escort.

Kelly/Kennedy claim Historic Rally win
Donagh Kelly and Rory Kennedy sealed a memorable victory on the Killarney Historic Rally, finishing one place better than their result 12 months earlier. The BMW M3 crew finished 23.7 seconds ahead of Tomas Davies and Killarney co-driver Shane Buckley’s Ford Escort RS1800. It was a perfect start to the defence of Davies’ Wales Motorsport Fabrication Historic Irish Tarmac Rally Championship crown as he picked up top points on the first round of the 2025 NAPA Auto Parts Irish Tarmac Championship. John O’Donnell completed the Killarney Historic Rally podium on his first visit to Killarney since switching to the increasingly popular BMW M3. The Donegal driver found a great turn of pace as the single-day event progressed, climbing from ninth after the opening stage. O’Donnell’s co-driver Paddy Robinson secured top co-drivers’ points in the Wales Motorsport Historic ITRC opener. Junior WRC crew, Eamonn Kelly and Conor Mohan, took the early Killarney Historic lead after a mighty sunrise effort through Moll’s Gap. Kelly went eight seconds faster than Davies through Killarney’s opener but his run at the front ended after falling off the road on Caragh Lake. His father Donagh inherited the lead on stage three, controlling it until the rally’s close in darkness on Saturday evening. Davies, meanwhile, slipped 16.5 seconds behind Kelly and his focus turned to 2022 Historic Irish Tarmac Rally Champions Neil Williams and Anthony O’Sullivan. Williams finished stage three 12.5 seconds off Davies’ pace with Denis Moynihan a further 7.6 seconds back in fourth. A spin on stage four, Moll’s Gap, cost Moynihan a bundle of time as he slipped back to 10th. That opened up a three-way
fight for fourth spot. It was three BMW M3s fighting for position with Fergus O’Meara enjoying his M3 debut to grab fourth on Moll’s Gap. 5.6 seconds covered O’Meara, O’Donnell, and Alan Ring at the rally’s halfway point. Their fight for fourth became a fight for third when Williams and O’Sullivan were left stranded on Caragh Lake with a broken timing belt. O’Meara’s positive M3 debut ran into trouble on Killarney’s penultimate test, a wet Kilcummin. A spin cost O’Meara the guts of 30 seconds, leaving him fifth overall with one stage to go. Meanwhile, O’Donnell was going from strength to strength and caught O’Meara through the same stage. The Donegal driver’s push gave him his first stage win of the day, putting him into the podium places. O’Donnell held onto his podium spot with a strong time through Killarney’s finale. His effort was only bettered by Cathan McCourt who was charging back from mechanical woes on Saturday morning. McCourt’s stage win propelled him ahead of Ring and O’Meara to finish fourth. Ring and Adrian Deasy rounded out the top five, 22.1 seconds ahead of Mark Falvey and James O’Brien. O’Meara fell out of the top five in Killarney’s final night-stage. A hard-charging Greer nipped ahead of him by two seconds on the decisive test, leaving O’Meara eighth. The local pilot has many positives from his M3 debut, including third-placed Wales Motorsport Historic ITRC points.

Home rebuilding costs continue to increase The latest House Rebuilding Guide published by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) shows that national average rebuild costs, which include demolition and site clearance, have increased by an average of 6.2% over the past 12 months. This is almost half the 12% rate of increase recorded last year and is well down on the 21% increase recorded in 2022. Labour costs and skills shortages are continuing to drive rebuild costs, while levies on concrete and waste are new factors. From an insurance perspective your property should be insured for the reinstatement cost and not the market value, in other words the cost of rebuilding the house excluding the site value. Bear in mind that currently the rebuild cost
could be higher than the market value. The base rebuilding costs in the Kerry region are running at an average of €280-€300 a square foot (or €2980 per square metre for a 4 bed detached house of 119 square metres) in the most recently published guide. The rebuilding rates quoted by SCSI are for estate type homes and not one-off homes. The calculation should account for the most recent building regulations, professional fees, demolition costs and VAT, and should make provision for

higher than average fittings, built in wardrobes, fences, walls, and garages. It is very important to note that “under insurance” can have a serious effect on any future claims settlements. Most policies include an “Average Clause” which means in the event of “under insurance” any claims settlement can be reduced in value in proportion to the degree of under insurance. Where the Sum Insured is only 75% of the total reinstatement cost, you will receive 75% of the agreed cost of reinstatement, whether the claim is made for partial reinstatement or total loss. I would recommend that you undertake a review of your reinstatement sum insured. Many insurers are index linking sums insured at renewal date. In order to

Fancy a new home for Christmas? With properties in short supply in the Killarney area, estate agent Ted Healy of DNG has this week reported that only one property remains in phase-one of Cloverfield, a development of four-bedroom detached family homes on Muckross Road. Construction of phase-one is now underway with phase-two due to be released in 2025. Commenting, selling agent Ted Healy
said: ‘We have had great interest in this development. With only 1 remaining property in Phase 1 we expect to be sold out very soon – once it is gone its gone!’ With the site due to be opened up onto the Muckross Road in 2025, it is sure to attract the attention of homeowners seeking quality detached family homes at this much sought after address. Expressions of interest are now being taken for phase two.
Meanwhile, the finishing touches are currently being put to the showhome in The Inches, Woodlawn Road. This will be an exclusive development of 11 x two-bedroom townhouses and is set for release in early 2025. And with another new scheme of semi-detached homes due to be announced in the new year, DNG Ted Healy are certainly to the fore when it comes to new homes this Christmas.

Crokes tipped to topple Tipp champions

Killarney men on cusp of Munster glory and All-Ireland series return MUNSTER SENIOR CLUB FINAL
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dr Crokes v Loughmore-Castleiney Sunday 1.30pm Mallow | Live on TG4 Kerry champions Dr Crokes will be fancied to bridge a six-year gap to their last provincial title when they square up to Loughmore-Castleiney of Tipperary in the final of the Munster Senior Club Championship on Sunday. The Crokes last won this competition in 2018 when they enjoyed a relatively comfortable nine-point victory over St Joseph’s Miltown Malbay at the Gaelic Grounds. No senior Kingdom outfit has triumphed in Munster since. Pat O’Shea’s charges became resounding favourites for this year’s edition when they beat Castlehaven of Cork in the quarters, although they did subsequently get a bitx of a fright against underdogs Rathgormack in the last four. Four points apiece by Micheál Burns and Tony Brosnan just about saw them over the line a fortnight ago as the Waterford representatives fell to an agonising 0-9 to 0-8 defeat. Perhaps that close call will spur them into life against a Loughmore-Castleiney side who arrive at the final on the back of an impressive 3-9 to 2-7 win over Éire Óg Ennis in the semi-final. The Tipp team were grateful for their bench that day as subs Ciarán Connolly and
Philip O’Connell scored a goal each to propel them to their first Munster final since 1973. Crokes, meanwhile, are no strangers to this stage having won five Munster titles between 2011 and 2018 – although this will be uncharted territory for the likes of Evan Looney, Mark O’Shea, Charlie Keating and Cian McMahon who arrived on the scene after the club’s trophy-laden period in the 2010s. Later on Sunday, Errigal Ciaran of Tyrone will play Kilcoo of Down in the Ulster Senior Club final. Coolera Strandhill of Sligo and Cuala of Dublin have already booked their spots in the All-Ireland semi-finals. Elsewhere this weekend, Austin Stacks will be expected to overcome the challenge of Aherlow of Tipperary in the Munster Intermediate Club Championship final. The match is scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday) at 1pm in Mallow. Firies will be hoping to move one step closer to Croker when they take on Kilmurry of Cork in the Munster Junior Club final. That one is also fixed for tomorrow. Throw-in at Mick Neville Park in Rathkeale is at 6pm.

Carroll and O’Sullivan shine for St Paul’s U20 NATIONAL LEAGUE ___________________________________________________________________________________
St Paul’s
98 | Moycullen 67
KILCUMMIN NS GYM After an opening day defeat to the Tralee Warriors, St Paul’s bounced back with a comfortable victory over Moycullen last weekend to get their first U20 National League win and hopefully set them up for more success in 2025. The Killarney team were dominant from the first tip with Eoin Carroll quickly into his stride. Jack O’Sullivan did the heavy
lifting also in terms of scoring but Mark Sheehan and Oisín Spring laid the platform for a lot of good work in the opening quarter. With a 31-14 lead, Adam Whitty and TJ O'Sullivan saw court time in the second quarter with Shane Daly and John Hughes also influential as O’Sullivan and Carroll again led the way in scoring. Moycullen got into the game much better
in the third quarter with senior National League player Cian Walsh their leading light. However, Spring and Daly made sure the lead was still healthy at 68-47. The fourth quarter saw Adam Whitty and John Hughes get on the scoresheet and Mark Sheehan hit a purple patch beyond the arc. With the game safe it was good to see U18 players Dara O’Sullivan and Cathal Spring on the court, emulating their brothers Jack and Oisín. Coach Tim O’Sullivan, ably assisted by Paul Sheehan, will be very happy with the 31-point win. The team will play the Limerick Celtics
early in the New Year.
ST PAUL’S: Shane Daly (6), John Hughes (4), Oisín Spring (9), Dara O’Sullivan, Cathal Spring, Adam Whitty (4), Eoin Carroll (30), TJ O’Sullivan (3), Mark Sheehan (15), Jack O’Sullivan (27). In the senior Men’s National League Division One, Scotts Lakers suffered a heavy 106-70 defeat at the hands of the Limerick Celtics. Ron Howard’s side will be aiming to bounce back when they take on the Tipp Talons away from home this weekend. Elsewhere, the Killarney Cougars gave a good account of themselves against the Limerick Sport Eagles but were unfortunate to lose by six points (93-87). Utility Trust St Paul’s also lost last weekend, coming up short away to the Trinity Meteors (75-62) in the Women’s Super League. The teams will meet again this Saturday in the Paudie O'Connor National Cup with the game being played in Coláiste Íosagáin, Dublin at 5.30pm.
VICTORY: The St Paul's team who defeated Moycullen in an U20 National League match in Kilcummin.
Strong second half sees Rathmore over the line O’DONOGHUE CUP FINAL ___________________________________________________________________________________
Rathmore
1-12 | Kilcummin 2-7
FITZGERALD STADIUM A strong second-half display was enough for Rathmore to capture the 2024 East Kerry Championship title over a spirited Kilcummin outfit at the Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney. Kilcummin, who were hoping to lift the O’Donoghue Cup for the first time in 51 years, were in the ascendency in the first half and Matt Keane’s goal plus scores by Keelan O’Shea and Paul O’Shea gave them a commanding four-point advantage (1-6 to 0-4) at the break. Rathmore needed a good start to the second period and they got it as a point by
Kerry star Shane Ryan and a goal by Alan Dineen reduced the deficit to the minimum. Keane goaled again for Kilcummin to re-establish their hold on the game but they were unable to maintain it down the stretch as John Moynihan, Mark Reen and Shane Ryan all found the target to level the contest. In the end it was the veteran Paul Murphy who was the hero, notching two crucial points when his team needed him most. So, Kilcummin’s wait for an O’Donoghue Cup goes on as Rathmore celebrate their ninth district title and first since 2017.

‘I’m enjoying every d In Part 2 of his interview with Eamonn Fitzgerald, Irish women’s basketball coach James Weldon reveals how losing his parents changed his perspective on life Eamonn Fitzgerald: The mastery of skills in one game transfers to other codes. Let’s take football and basketball. Many GAA followers say that GAA copies basketball and soccer too closely, retaining possession at all costs which is ruining the modern game. James Weldon: That has led to new proposals to change the rules of football, but football can learn from basketball. The skills of high fielding along with what I term ‘quick, smart hands’ from basketball improves the football player. That’s a great observation, Eamonn. I've seen it with Jayo and Mark Ingle, used by Jim Gavin of Dublin and others too. It goes back to scanning. In basketball, you are scanning play the whole time. You're trying to see where the next pass is coming from and where it may lead to. There are a lot of technical skills and tactical skills both from defence and offence in all codes and it is a learning process. Why do you think Eamonn Fitzmaurice brought you into the Kerry setup in 2018 as an advisor? I suppose because a basketball coach has a different perspective on a game that can be used in football, leading to success. A manager will try to get every advantage for his team. Eamonn is an excellent coach and he has become a great pundit. I’m happy that people get to see how he views the game. You can suggest certain movements and play to tighten up a defence but also to control the game and influence the outcome with new strategies. Since I was involved in 2018, football has become very zonal. This makes sense as support defence is vital as it’s impossible to contain a star player one-on-one if you’re talking about a David Clifford or Michael Jordan. I hope the proposed new rules will address this. I know some people are not in favour of some of these new rules, but they will help. The simple things in basketball work, like see the man, see the ball. In football, a lot of times when players have the ball they don’t look up and see the move to pass quickly. Very often in football they just tag their direct opponent. Over the years there have been topclass GAA players who are also brilliant in basketball. Off the top of my head,

way back I think of Paddy Culligan, Jim McKeever, Tadhgie Lyne, Johnny Culloty, Liam McHale, Jayo and Star (Donaghy), of course. And Pat O’Shea. You know him as a teammate and basketball coach. He is on the Munster Club football trail as we speak. Yes, Pat and Clarkey were exceptional passers of the ball, scanning the whole time. Pat could think not just about the immediate pass but could visualise the situation three or four passes ahead and the possibilities that could emerge. That’s the difference; the great player will give the correct pass at the precise time to a teammate who’s in a better position, and he’s not worried about his own scoring stats. It’s no ego trip for him: the greater good of the team is all that matters. Colm Cooper was in that category and present-day David Clifford is of the same mould, a great individual scorer but also great to assist a team member to score. The winner is the Kerry team. When I was playing National League, Pat always stressed the basic skills, moves that were not so obvious to most, and always to play with your head up and hands up when needed.
You mightn’t see the pass he was going to throw to you and if you weren’t switched on you were going to get it on the nose. I remember going to Crokes games and wondering how a player with such a slight frame could survive, not to mention influence the outcome of the match. And the game was far more physical then. As a coach his record speaks for itself, managing Kerry to win the All-Ireland and also so much success at club level. Look at this year, he has come in and transformed Crokes into a winning outfit. That is a rare talent. What goes through your mind as head coach of the Irish women’s squad? In one word: support. My job as a coach is to serve and support the players so they can perform to their maximum and in turn I have an incredible support team around me with my assistants and a backroom team who are all very experienced in their own areas. My Dad used to say, “you don’t always have to be the smartest person in the room in every aspect of the business - recruit quality people around you”. I am fortunate to have two great assistant coaches. Ioannis Liapakis has won the Men's Super League and he has a great tactical mind.
Then I have Jillian Hayes who played at senior international level herself. Her on-court technical development work with the players is second to none, as is her ability to connect with and bring the best out of the players. I lean on them very much during the game. One of them would be looking specifically at the defence elements of the game while the other concentrates on the offence. Also, our manager Dolores, analyst Adrian, S&C coach Sam and physiotherapist Declan all do an incredible job to keep the ship moving forward. During a game, our focus is to manage the momentum. Time and score are critical components of game management, as is the ability to make adjustments to counter the game plan being executed by our opponent, wherever possible. Ensuring the ball is in the right player’s hands late in the game is another important factor and taking high-percentage shots when the opportunity arises. I’m interested in all sports and in basketball it strikes me that court time is very pressurised. There may be about eight seconds left on the clock in basketball but so much can change compared to a similar situation in football. My former club coach
6.12.2024
y day as it comes’ Paul Sheehan will tell you that even 1.9 seconds is a long time in basketball. You get huge momentum and swings in basketball games. One or two silly mistakes or lack of concentration often lead to a different result, so you don’t want to concede turnovers. The players and the coach need to be focused all the time and at the top international level, it is more so. In so many cases the coach may not even be from the country of the players, so he has to have good communication skills.
Heading up the Irish team must mean a lot of travel and time away from home? People may think so, but not really as an Irish coach. I remember when I got the job Brendan Kealy asked if I would be moving to Dublin. The reality is different. I spend most of my time at home in Barleymount and will only be away for a week around an international. I may
travel to some Super League games to assess players or potential internationals. The rest of the time I spend at home where I can see games in which our internationals are playing, or I will be switched on to college games in the US or elsewhere. I watch Euro League games as well, always learning ways of improving my coaching, learning from others and adapting strategies to our team. If I was coaching a National League or Super League team I would be tied up with training a few times a week and travelling all over the country for games.

How do you see your future, James? I hope to continue to build on the steady progress we have made with the national team, but this year has taught me an awful lot about what's important in life. I lost my Mom (Eileen) and Dad (Séamus) this year in March and June respectively, so you do not look too far ahead. As human beings, we tend to spend too much time looking too far ahead. Enjoy every day as it comes. Every opportunity I get to stand under the tricolour is a blessing and I value all the time I spend with my wife Sharon and two children Zachary and Esme as very precious. That’s my future and my present all in one. Sound man, James. We’ll end on that philosophical note. Thanks for your time and best of luck in your next game against France on February 6th. Killarney is proud of you.
This year has taught me an awful lot about what's important in life. James WELDON

Our silent Irish soldiers should find their voice
Adam Moynihan believes the Irish men’s team (all of them) should copy our female players and sing our national anthem Sadly, the Irish women’s team looked a little disjointed in their defeat to Wales on Tuesday night, but they were at least singing from the same hymn sheet immediately prior to kick-off. Linked together arm in arm, all 11 starters – five of whom were born and raised in foreign lands – belted out Amhrán na bhFiann in unison and with great gusto. It was clear from their passionate rendition and the expressions on their faces that they were delighted to be there representing Ireland on the international stage. This shouldn’t really be noteworthy. After all, singing the anthem is standard practice for international football teams all over the world. However, one notable exception to
the rule is the Irish men’s team. Some members of the current squad do not sing The Soldier’s Song, instead remaining straight-faced and silent while their teammates and supporters join in. As a fan, I have to say it’s not something I like to see. It should go without saying but this is obviously nothing like American football players kneeling during The Star-Spangled Banner or a person from the UK choosing not to sing God Save the King. If someone refuses to acknowledge their country’s anthem due to their personal or political beliefs or to highlight a societal issue, more power to them. I think that’s admirable and should be respected. But that’s not what’s going on with the Irish soccer team. Certain players are
simply not participating, perhaps because they don’t know the words in the case of the England-born lads, or because they’re choosing not to sing in the case of the native Irish lads. Being too patriotic can be a bad thing in the real world, especially if it bleeds into nationalism, but what is international football if not a stage for patriotism? We have our guys. You have your guys. Send them over here and we’ll see who’s best. It’s an exercise in flag waving and showing the world how proud you are of your team and, ultimately, the place you come from. The whole thing is a show and the anthems are probably the most visceral and emotive part of the pageantry. Frankly, I find it a bit weird that some of the players are opting out. If nothing else, taking part would be a really easy PR win. In fact, if I was an adviser to Heimir Hallgrimsson
I’d pull him aside and say, “Come here, do you know what the fans would love…” If he doesn’t want to learn it, fair enough. He’s not Irish and unlike the British media, I wouldn’t consider it an act of treason if he declined. (Good luck to their new German manager Thomas Tuchel, by the way. He will be doing well to get out of there uncrucified.) Everyone in Heimir’s squad is Irish, though, and I don’t think it’s too much to ask for the Ireland-born players to sing the anthem, or for the England-born players to learn 11 lines of a song, even if the language is foreign to them. We’re not asking them to master the modh coinníollach. A child can learn Amhrán na bhFiann having little or no command of Irish – we all did it. And so did Courtney Brosnan (born and raised in the USA), Caitlin Hayes (England), Anna Patten (England), Ruesha Littlejohn (Scotland) and Kyra Carusa (USA). I’m sure the boys who don’t sing the anthem are all proud Irishmen beneath their cold, lifeless glares. I just think it would be no harm if they expressed that pride through the medium of song like the rest of us.
Some of the male players don’t sing Amhrán na bhFiann. As a fan, I have to say it’s not something I like to see. LOUD AND PROUD: Ireland players singing Amhrán na bhFiann before the EURO 2025 playoff against Wales at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Photo: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile.

SPORT NOTES
Killarney Athletic U14 DIVISION 2 NORTH: A solid performance by our U14B’s this evening as they came away with the 3 points after travelling to Tralee to play Park. A great response to get their season back on track after losing in their previous fixture, keep this momentum going now lads! MOTM - Dylan O’Connor. U12 GIRLS SOUTH: Killarney Athletic White v Kenmare. 1-2 to Kenmare. Athletic had a great 1st half, and went 1-0 with a fine touch from Aoife Delaney, after a great flick through from Julie Quinlan. Some great saves from Jane Brosnan kept Athletic with the lead at half time. Kenmare really came out in the second half with a determination to win and had two quick goals in the second half. Athletic tried hard to get the equaliser at least, but the Kenmare defence held strong. A good game in bad conditions. Clara O’Donohue and Alannah McGlynn were excellent throughout the game. U12 GIRLS SOUTH: Iveagh FC v Killarney Athletic Blue. Iveagh win 6-0. A tough game in very poor conditions, wind and rain being the order of the day. The girls came up against a strong Iveagh team today. We showed some great football at times, but Iveagh were excellent on the break and got some quick goals in both halves. We were very unlucky not to get on the score board in the second half with some link up play between Rian O’Donnell and Caitlin Hickey. Rian being unlucky to have her shot saved in the end. U13 BOYS DIVISION 1: Ballyhar 4 Killarney Athletic B 1. Goal: Eric Reed. The first half was an even affair. Ballyhar were strong on set pieces and took the lead early on when Athletic failed to clear their lines. Athletic responded well and scored an equaliser before half time through a well taken finish by Eric Reed. Weather conditions deteriorated in the second half and Athletic found themselves playing into the strong wind and rain. Ballyhar, to their credit, took full advantage scoring 3 goals to claim the win. U14 GIRLS DIVISION 1: LB Rovers 5-4 Killarney Athletic A.F.C. B. Leah Heineman 3, Croi O'Carroll 1. Athletic travelled to LB Rovers today for which proved to be a very entertaining match. LB started strongly and hit the post a couple of times, but Athletic soon settled and soon pulled ahead with a fantastic goal from Leah Heineman from a though ball through midfield which left her 1v1 with the Rovers keeper. Leah slotted the ball past the keeper for 1-0 lead. Athletic kept the pressure and Leah grabbed 2 more similar goals with though balls from midfield. Athletic 3-0 up at half time. The second half proved to be a much-changed half and LB rovers started to grab the goals and the game was level at 3 -3, 15 minutes
into the second half. The Athletic girls started to tire due to only 1 sub available but kept on trying. However Rovers grabbed another goal with 10 minutes left. Athletic head didn't dop and were soon level with a great goal from Croi O’Carroll. Game 4 - 4 with 5 minutes left. Athletic tiredness started to show and a long ball from Rovers resulted a snatched goal for Rovers with 2 minutes left. Game finished LB Rovers 5 Killarney Athletic 4. U14 GIRLS NATIONAL CUP: Killarney Athletic A.F.C. 8-0 Castleisland. Ella Crowley 3, Lillian Slattery 2, Esme O’Sullivan, Aoife Kelleher, Ellie O’Sullivan. U13 DIV 1: St Brendan’s Park B 2-2 Killarney Celtic White. Jace Flynn, Mark Van Der Merwe. In an exciting contest Celtic White played out a draw in Tralee. Kilcummin GAA O’DONOGHUE CUP FINAL 2024: Rathmore 1- 12 Kilcummin 2-07. Despite a great effort and total commitment from players and management we came up short in Fitzgerald' stadium last Sunday losing out by two points to a strong Rathmore outfit. We started well with a Paul O’Shea free and a fine long-range effort from Keelan O’Shea. Rathmore responded with two points, but Matt Keane put us back in front after 12 minutes from play. Paul O’Shea added two further points from play and from a placed ball. At this stage our defence was playing really well, and we were breaking fast up field to get our scores, but Rathmore settled their ship with two further points to leave us ahead by just a point with five minutes left in the first half. A quick ball out of defence found Mark O’Shea bearing down on goal but the Rathmore goalie saved brilliantly. From the resultant 45 metre Matt Keane claimed the ball and finished expertly to the net. When Paul O’Shea pointed a further free we led at half time by five points 1-6 to 0-4. Rathmore started quickly in the second half and had scored a goal and a point by the sixth minute. However our players were dangerous on the break and following a great move Matt Keane stepped in again to find the net after ten minutes to leave us ahead by four points 2-06 to 1-05. Rathmore made some changes, and their impact was evident as they kicked the next five points to lead by a point with five minutes remaining. Our boys were not giving up and when Paul O’Shea pointed the sides were level with five minutes remaining and our supporters were hopeful, but credit to Rathmore who added two late points to run out deserving winners despite a phenomenal effort from a young Kilcummin team. Final score Rathmore 1-12 Kilcummin 2-07. Special mention must go to Matt Keane who was named "Man of the Match" just reward for a tremendous effort on his behalf scoring 2-01 and defending when needed. Well done to the team and mentors and we can only benefit from the experience going forward. Team: Brendan Kealy, Dara Stack, Chris O’Leary, James Williams, Sean O’Leary,
