A Heartfelt message from a Ukrainian migrant in Killarney

As a migrant in Killarney in 2023, I reflect on the significance of the International Day of Migrants initiated by the UN General Assembly in 2000. Little did I expect this day to personally touch my life, but due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, I increasingly find myself feeling like a forced migrant. | By Natalia Krasnenkova Amid the festive spirit of Christmas, reminiscent of the biblical story where Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt with baby Jesus, I can't help but draw parallels to the 8,000 Ukrainians in Kerry today who resonate with the pages of the Bible as forced migrants. Like the family of Joseph and Mary with the baby Jesus in their arms 2,000 years ago, Ukrainian families have become a forced-migrant nowadays. What is it like being a migrant? It means a complete loss of control over life's basics. Living in a hotel without cooking facilities, we can't control even the simplest things like food. Zero absence protocol means we're not allowed to leave the hotel, marking our presence there every day. Starting anew as a migrant involves learning a new language, searching for jobs,

mastering new professions, and adapting to unfamiliar rules. Often, it feels like being a failure, struggling to comprehend half of what is said around you. Living as a forced migrant means navigating two parallel realities. While physically in Killarney, attempting to forge a new life, thoughts and emotions frequently return to Ukraine, where the war persists and loved ones endure. Constantly checking the news and calling home is a ritual, reassuring ourselves that our dear ones are still alive. However, our migrant experience in Killarney is also adorned with bright moments. Grateful for the support of local families in Fossa and Killarney from the early days, we, the first Ukrainians at the Innisfallen Hotel, received immediate assistance, clothes, toys, bicycles. The kindness of Sean Sweeney from the local scout organisation, Nicola Lynch uniting

mums from Fossa School to raise funds for vouchers, and Maria Carol O'Sullivan's thoughtful gestures made our days brighter. The O'Raw family sheltered a Ukrainian family, and the Killarney Immigrant Support Center (KASI), NEWKD, SKDP, and Kerry County Council have been a significant support. While I may not name everyone, the warmth and hospitality received are deeply appreciated. Eager to contribute to the close-knit community, we participate in local events like the St. Patrick's Day parade, Christmas celebrations, and organise concerts, film screenings, and volunteer projects. Symbolically, we brought and planted 20 viburnum bushes along the Killarney municipal area, expressing our gratitude to this community that has embraced us. Being a migrant is challenging, but the local Killarney community makes our stay a bit easier. I extend my heartfelt thanks to every local resident, family, and organisation that supports us. In the spirit of the season, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Personally, I dream of meeting the next day's migrants at home, in Kyiv, in a peaceful Ukraine.

Natalia Krasnenkova was one of the first Ukrainian war refugees to arrive in Killarney.

Palestinian Mia Saleh’s Speech Raises the Roof

Killarney-based Palestinian Mia Saleh at the 'Gig for Gaza’ in Tralee on Wednesday night. Photo: Cillian Garvey

A Tralee ‘Gig for Gaza’ on Wednesday night starred local Mia Saleh with a powerful speech on her experience of being a Palestinian, a place that she has yet to visit. | By Aidan Quirke The Killarney resident is daughter of Mohammed Saleh and Fatima Al Khateeb, who run The VIP Turkish Barbers on Glebe Lane. Up to 300 people from Kerry attended the concert in St John’s Church, Ashe St. Tralee to show solidarity with the people of Palestine. Mia, who is just 15 years old, took to the stage to give a speech detailing her lived experience and how her parents arrived as refugees to Ireland. “When my parents first arrived to Ireland as refugees they had no papers so they had to go to the Palestinian ambassador and told him that they were refugees from Palestine. They got papers eventually but, in the paper(s), it stated that we had no right to go back to our homeland Palestine to visit. We couldn’t go to the place we are from,” said Mia. The youngster held a rapt audience for 10 minutes as she detailed how she as a child had to act differently from other children. “At a young age I always saw children messing around and playing but I could

never do the same as if I did anything wrong people will judge us, ‘people won’t see anything but the fact that I wear a hijab’ is what my mom would always say,” Mia said. The confident teenager spoke with hope and belief that she will return to Palestine one day. “I will return home and so will all the families and refugees that were kicked out, we will go back to a free and peaceful Palestine,” Mia said to a thunderous round of applause for her speech. Over €5,000 was raised on the night for the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fun and was organised by Tralee local arts group, nonfaction, in collaboration with the Kerry branch of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Group. The event also featured Kerry and national musicians. The headline act was rising folk star John Frances Flynn along with Tralee native Teresa Galvin, singer songwriter Aoife Nessa Frances and Limerick spoken work artist, Dyrt. Nationally, ‘Gigs for Gaza’ and other events are happening nationwide. Another concert for Kerry will be announced in the New Year

The Golden Dragon Chinese Takeaway on the Tralee Road was found to be in breace of food safety legislation during an inspection in November. The restraint was closed from November 10 to 16 as a result of the order but has since re-opened. “Food law requires all food businesses to be notified to the relevant competent authority prior to operating. This requirement ensures that food businesses will be registered and/or approved with the appropriate inspection agency to ensure food safety and protect consum-

er health,” said Commenting, Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive, Food Safety Authority of Ireland “Every food business must have a food safety management system in place to protect consumers’ health and prevent instances, such as those seen in the Enforcement Orders in November. Each business must also have a positive food safety culture embedded within it. Failure to comply with basic food safety legal requirements is not only a potential risk to public health, but also a risk to the food business’s reputation if things go wrong. Several of the Enforcement Orders in November also detail problems with pest infestations. These must be prevented by always having robust pest control systems in place, but especially during these colder winter months.”

Blessing of St. Pio’s Glove on Monday evening There will be a blessing with St. Pio’s Glove in the Church of the Resurrection in Killarney after the 7:30 Mass on December 18. The Killarney St Pio Prayer Group meets in the Church of the Resurrection at 7.15pm on the third Monday of each month. Usually they have the Rosary, Mass, Benediction and a blessing with one of the St Pio relics. This Monday evening however, there will be a blessing with St Pio’s glove from 7.15pm on and all are welcome to come

along. Saint Pio of Pietrelcina as he is known, is believed to have performed many miraculous healings down through the years. Padre Pio wore many gloves over this time to cover his stigmata which, devotees believe, corresponded with Christ's crucifixion wounds.

Margaret O’Donoghue pictured with her children and extended family at the Order of Inisfallen awards do at her family’s Gleneagle Hotel on Monday. Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan

Business legend receives the town’s highest honour Margaret O’Donoghue of the landmark Gleneagle INEC Arena was inducted into the Order of Inisfallen by Cairde Chill Áirne at a reception in the historic Muckross House in Killarney National Park on Monday evening. The award was created in 2005 to allow Killarney to recognise, celebrate and say thank you to a select number of people who have, in a variety of different ways, brought good to Killarney’s name and image around the country and around the world. Margaret follows in the footsteps of very distinguished previous recipients including former Taoiseach Enda Kenny,

international industrialist Isolde Liebherr, Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender and entertainer Daniel O’Donnell. She becomes the first lady to receive the honour since 2018 when the recipient was Camilla, then Duchess of Cornwall and now the Queen of England. Margaret and her late husband, Maurice, who passed away in 2001, transformed an eight-bed guesthouse into the incredibly successful entertainment complex that is now the Gleneagle INEC Arena which has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors to the town over the years. They were the guiding hands in the push

to develop The Brehon Hotel, The Gleneagle Apartments and Scott’s Hotel as well as top class indoor and outdoor sports and leisure facilities and a concert band, and the O’Donoghue family has been to the forefront of several other major developments which have been of huge benefit to Killarney, to Kerry and to Ireland. The Order of Innisfallen award – a joint initiative between Kerry County Council and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce – was presented to Margaret by Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin. “Margaret has been the guiding hand in all that the family has achieved and, given her enormous contribution over so many years, it is wonderful that she is being officially recognised with this very important award,” the mayor said.

Event host and Muckross House Trustee, Geraldine Rosney, said the award reflected the enormous contribution Margaret and Maurice O’Donoghue have made to Killarney. “They were a couple with a dream, a couple with a vision and a couple with getup-and-go determination to pick up the ball and start running and running and running. “Margaret, Maurice and their family’s achievements with the creation and building and expansion of their enterprises over the last 59 years is nothing short of monumental,” she said Margaret said it was an honour to accept the Order of Innisfallen on behalf of both herself and the late Maurice and, indeed, their seven children, Patrick, Maurice, John, Eamonn, Áine, Shelly and Aoife. Margaret was one of 10 children born to Hannah and John O’Sullivan in Shanara, Beaufort. She attended school in Kilgobnet and Killorglin Community College and she began her working life in Killarney’s Great Southern Hotel. She first met Maurice O’Donoghue, who was then studying to become a pharmacist in Dublin, at a dance in Tralee in 1961 and they were married in 1964.

Fr Kieran O'Brien celebrates 30 years in priesthood it gave from schoolwork!"

Celebrating 30 years of service in any line of work might well reward recognition in the form of 'glitz and bling' or perhaps a night on the tiles with friends! It is important to celebrate longevity for many reasons, including the dedication, continuity and commitment, to improve and motivate, and the ability to change over three decades, within our society and the community of Killarney. I was delighted, after much persuasion, to score an opportunity to chat with Fr Kieran O'Brien, on his 30th anniversary of being ordained a priest in 1993, where 18 of those years have been served the people of Killarney! Have you always wanted to be a priest Fr Kieran? "I come from a very ordinary family Marie. A home where three generations lived, my grandmother, my parents and five children, me being the middle child. There were no expectations for me to become a priest. I have great memories of sitting in the same seat at Sunday mass each week with my family. I had one uncle and two granduncles who were priests so there were always great religious values amongst us all at home. I was never an alter server but I gained financially as well as spiritually when I served for my uncle, Fr Humphrey McMahon's (RIP) masses when he'd return on holiday (he passed one year after my ordination). It came as no surprise to my family when I left for Maynooth, at the age of 18. My parents worked hard to put us all through education. It was especially hard times as my father had lost his job just before I began in Maynooth. There were 80 students in

What is the most difficult part of being Fr Kieran O'Brien? Definitely, the sorrow when a loved one is lost. You worry and hope you will say the right thing. I found it hard to serve my own father's funeral but it was also something I considered a huge honour. I also find it difficult when colleagues change parish. The notice is three weeks. Any change is difficult, changing house, changing jobs and the adaptations that are incurred.

my class, and 300 in the college when I arrived. I lodged at the college for 6 years and made many friends, most of which still reside in parishes throughout Ireland, so was delighted to have the opportunity to reunite in Maynooth, to mark our 30th year in the priesthood recently". Did you always stay in Kerry? "The Diocese of Kerry spreads as far as West Cork and Kerry has a foreign mission too but I'm a home bird, Marie, so all of my posts have been in Kerry. I began in Killarney in 1993 before moving to Dingle in 1999. I then went to Ballyferriter in 2003 for two years before heading home to Tralee in 2005 and returned to Killarney in 2012, where I've stayed since". What is your most memorable moment throughout your career? "Getting Killarney!! It meant so much to me, it still does now. I was one of 6 hopefuls. I was ordained in Killarney's Cathedral by Bishop Diarmuid O'Suilleabhain, and my parents were married here, 60 years ago, Brendan (RIP) & Margaret O'Brien. Out of college, I had all the academics but not the practical. I was the

youngest priest to start out of those six and I am now the administrator of Killarney parish today. I have learned from my experiences and my mistakes. Overall I have been blessed to spend over half my career in this parish. Killarney is a wonderful community to be part of. I have already married two out of 8 children that I baptised when I arrived. These were extra special occasions for me. Outside of the day job, what do you enjoy in your spare time? "I enjoy sports of all kinds and played with Austin Stacks when I was younger. I also loved handball as a child and play twice a week with Spa GAA". What gives you the energy to keep going? "I suppose I am on a journey with the people of the parish all the time. I get huge rejuvenation from visiting the schools I am assigned to, Loreto, Tiernaboul and Lissivigeen National Schools. I love to answer the children's questions, especially from those preparing for sacraments. I have great memories of the parish priest visiting my school as a child and the break

What do you think are the biggest challenges of the 21st century? "Fear is the main challenge for the lack of priests going forward. The church plays a huge part in the many joyous as well as sorrowful milestones throughout life. It is difficult to cover a number of parishes and communities, instead of one, all the while sustaining the energy to celebrate and empathise accordingly. I worry will our churches not always be open if we do not have the manpower to sustain them. What is your message for Christmas 2023? Christmas is a homecoming, even for me! Once all my masses are said, I am at the same table where I have always been in Tralee. I conveniently arrive moments before the turkey is carved!! Christmas is a joyous time of year. For some, it can be more painful as every year brings about changes in our lives. Rest, and cherish the moments, and the time spent with loved ones over the festive season, and I hope the New Year brings health and many blessings to everyone for the year ahead. Congratulations on your 30 years of service Fr Kieran O'Brien. It was a no-brainer to take his celebratory portrait by the most impressive and 'blingiest' location in Killarney, the Tree of Light!

Rotary Youth Leadership Development Competition

| By Grace Foley Aoibhín, a Fifth Year Student from St. Brigid's Secondary School, Killarney, was chosen as the Killarney Representative, for the Zone Finals of the Youth Leadership Development Competition after an intense two day interview process held in October with students aged between 1518 from a number of schools. For many students including Aoibhín Kelly it was the first interview they had ever done. Aoibhín represented St. Brigid's Secondary School and The Killarney Rotary Club, at the Zone final interviews this week for The Annual Youth Leadership Development Competition. This Competition is one of the Rotary Club's longest running youth projects and it rewards young people with clear leadership potential. The candidates were asked some challenging questions on current affairs, focusing mainly on Europe. President Barry Murphy said, "Our interviewers were in awe of the calibre of the participants. Aoibhín can be very proud of her achievement. We wish her well on her adventure and look forward to hearing all about it on her return." Kevin Taylor, member of Killarney Rotary Club said: “The standard of the candidates increases year on year which is a credit to both their parents and teachers.” As winner of the Zone Final for the Rotary

Youth Leadership Development Competition, Aoibhín was successful in gaining an all-expenses paid trip to Stormont in Belfast, The European Parliament Office in Dublin, Dáil Eireann and finally Strasbourg. In advance of the trip the students will be taught about current European issues which they will be given the opportunity to debate, amend, vote and adopt in the EU Parliament. Last year, the Killarney club finalist, Abbie O’Sullivan, won the Zone Final which was

held in Cork and had the opportunity of going on the all-expenses paid trip. Abbie O’Sullivan said “I can’t believe this opportunity was available to me in Killarney. It was the chance of a lifetime”. The 2023/2024 Zone winner, Aoibhín Kelly, plays soccer with Killarney Celtic and has a passion for equal representation for women in sport. Aoibhín Kelly said “ I would have to say my passion probably would have to be equality for women in sport, being a woman in elite

sport myself. I was at Ireland assessments, I’ve been at the centre of excellence and my soccer team has reached the national finals a couple of years in a row. So it’s definitely something I feel strongly about” The Youth Leadership Development Competition has been running for over twenty-five years and gives young people the opportunity to enhance their personal development and communication skills.

It was no surprise to anyone on learning Damien Switzer was running for the council, knowing his passion for Killarney, its history and heritage, as a local historian and regular contributor to the Killarney Advertiser. BACKGROUND

The Switzer family from Dalton’s Avenue is well known and has been steeped in volunteering in the community, and sporting and cultural organisations. Damien’s parents Frank and Eileen were a driving force in the parish, heavily involved in numerous groups and clubs. ‘As children, it was instilled into us and I’ve tried to instil the same values into my lads too - give your time where you can’. Damien would be known for his work in the Community Games and as well as supporting a number of local GAA, Basketball and Motor Clubs. In a professional capacity Damien has worked with all manner of businesses, various tourism bodies and served on committees which he believes gives him an insight into the challenges facing the business community and tourism sector. “We are a tourist destination but we are a town first, and locals can’t be second. As a local, from being an employee, and a business owner to returning to higher education as a student, a volunteer, a father to four boys, paying a mortgage, student costs, general cost of living pressures, being stuck in traffic like every-

15.12.2023

Damien Switzer running with Sinn Féin in local elections one else to discussing local issues with friends and colleagues I feel more than equipped to represent a wide variety of the Killarney MD constituency and I can assure locals by voting for me that their vote will be put to good use!" Speaking about his reason for running… “We all know the issues that are confronting our town, they are mimicked the length and breadth of the county, even one of my boys and his girlfriend cite the cost of living and houses prices as a reason they would consider migrating when they get their qualifications” “Look at what they would have earn to rent a house, never mind save to buy a house. They know plenty of their peers are looking very closely at not having or delaying having children, mainly due to the lack of affordable housing, and the availability and cost of crèches … they see their futures commuting long distances to work, early mornings and late nights, hardly seeing their kids, and tied to a generational mortgage or god forbid still living at home with us.’ “With this outgoing tide of our youth, the knock-on effects will slowly become evident when their social contribution is gone with them, the local shop closes due to lack of business, the club can’t field a

team, the pub only opens its doors at the weekend, no one to care for elderly parents, or take over the farm. With Christmas looming I offer a glimpse of a bleak future for many, quiet houses, dinner for two, looking forward to a brief few minutes FaceTime with grandkids that hardly know us on the other side of the world” “Killarney needs some fresh representatives, a new dedicated local voice putting local interests to the fore, with no vested interests, a common sense approach in policy and decision-making, and a strong input into Kerry County Council strategy plans, planning and budget spending”. With local elections around the corner Damien has a few clear objectives if he gets the support of Killarney locals

INCREASE FUNDING

for sporting and community facilities ‘As part of a team, a community and wider Killarney family… the benefits for all are immeasurable’

BETTER CONSULTATION IN PLANNING

‘Make everybody’s voice heard, ensure KCC justify their decision making and call them out when it simply doesn’t make sense’

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

‘More homes for people living and working in Killarney, create communities not just structures’

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PLAN

‘Bring solutions not problems, get things done right once and not getting half done year after year just to spend

the annual budget’ Another of Damien’s priorities is around town planning. An example he gives is Upper Park Road and Spa. “It’s great to see announcements putting in hundreds of houses in Cronin’s Wood, blocks of apartments on the bypass and plans for a college on the Pretty Polly site for thousands of students coming to Killarney but who does it really benefit, on the face of it not the local population. House prices will be driven by investors looking to rent, more developments will follow, not to mention the sewage infrastructure, pedestrian safety and roads that are already choked and won’t be able cope. Getting from Spa/Tiernaboul to Daly’s roundabout is slower ‘than some days on Mission Road’ and that’s saying something. You can’t just put thousands of people and cars into the system without infrastructure being in place first. Before any planning is allowed the overall picture and future development must be taken into account” So if you find Damien on your doorstep this Winter what will he be promising? ‘My promises, I won’t promise the world, I won’t be at every funeral, event or opening. You won’t see me calling for things I have no power to change. If you ask me a question be I’ll honest. If I don’t know something I’ll tell you, I’ll will go away and find out. I will identify what I can change and do everything in my power to make it happen.' Damien's running mate is Caroline Kenneally who is Constituency Office Manager for Pa Daly and he believes that “together we bring something different to the table”.

KCC students learn the art of film making Students from Killarney Community College took part in a Film Making Workshop. Students from second, transition year and Leaving Cert Applied work with Burning House Productions. Burning House Productions is an award-winning production company based in Dublin that specialise in film and theatre production. The students learned how to devise a script, operate the filmmaking equipment as well as acting and directing on camera. The students learned how to visually story tell and bring their ideas to life using cinematography. They used their own smartphones as well as professional filmmaking equipment and ended up shooting professional advertisements and short films. This is the second year that the award-winning production company has joined up with the college to not only teach students about how to creatively

write a script for a scene but to also teach them the understanding of the technical aspects of filmmaking, such as camera operation, lighting, sound design, and editing which provides a strong foundation in multimedia production. English teacher Tara O’ Shea said: “Filmmaking skills can open doors to various career opportunities, including film production, video editing, advertising, content creation, and more. The film industry is diverse, providing options for different interests and talents so we felt it was important to give our students the opportunity to explore this area.” “Killarney Community College are working with Burning House Productions in choosing film making equipment for their school to further enhance the learning experiences of all of their students. This will give students the opportunity to enter their short films in competitions for Film Festivals in the future along with the entries they created with the company Burning House Productions.”

Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra celebrates 25th Anniversary Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra in Rathmore celebrated its 25th anniversary this week. On Friday last staff and students marked December 8 by beginning the celebration of what is a very special occasion in the life of the school. The day started with a ‘Reeling in the Years’ video from 1998, the year that Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra was newly formed as a community school. This was followed by a Mass in St. Joseph’s Church, which was celebrated by Fr. Pat O Donnell and attended by the whole school community, as well as primary school students from Rathmore and Hollymount and members of the loThe current full staff team.

The new school at the time was an amalgamation of St. Mary’s Secondary School, which was run by the Presentation Order and Rathmore Vocational School which was run by Kerry Vocational Education Committee (VEC). The late Ted Kiely retired as principal in the Vocational School, also known as ‘The Tech’ and local man, Jer O’ Donoghue, who was the principal in the Secondary School (known as ‘The Convent’) became the principal of the newly formed Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra when it opened in

Winter Solstice climb to The Paps of Anú on Saturday December 23 polka set, followed by a rendition of In memory of Johnny ‘The Rock’ O’Brien Kerry ‘For these are my Mountains’ Johnny ‘the A call from our ancient ancestors - as our astronomical calendar gets closer to the Winter Solstice - the shortest day of the year - this year the ancient trek takes place on December 23 departing at 6.45 am, in aid of Kerry Hospice Foundation Palliative Care. Having a Saturday Solstice will allow people to travel and have time to savour the day, marking the first day of the Christmas holidays. This year the charity walk will be in memory of Johnny ’the Rock’ O’Brien, who sadly passed away on St. Stephen’s Day, 2022. Johnny was the heart and soul of Glenflesk, a caring farmer and wonderful neighbour who lived his life on his own

terms, waving to everyone who passed his house, with a return beep from lorries and locals. He tended to his animals with such compassion, and made sure they were safe during storms and floods. Carpooling is encouraged, parking at the Kerry Way Inn, Glenflesk, and with the kind permission of local landowners, the walk departs at Garries Bridge - the first bridge after St Agatha’s Church, Glenflesk, Meeting at 6.45am. The long walk in darkness to the summit has two strenuous inclines, leading to the Western Pap at 690 Metres. At approximately 8.45am sunrise the craic begins, with Glenflesks finest musicians Derry and Rosie Healy, setting the pace for a

Rock’ O’Briens favourite song. Mountaineer Donie Mulcahy and crew will guide the walkers to and from the summit. These ancient sacred summits, ‘The Paps of Anú’, resemble a pair of breast shaped hills known as ‘The Paps’ in the Derry Na Saggart Mountains close to the Cork Kerry border. The Paps have long been associated with mythology, mysticism and majesty. The Goddess Anú represents all that is earthly, fertile, abundant and protective. Donations will be collected on the morning of the walk. It is compulsory to wear a head torch, a level of fitness is required. Proper walking boots and rain gear is advised. Guides will be on duty for gear check before departure.

David Clifford helps launch Vision Impaired Physical Education Teaching Guide David Clifford helped Vision Sports Ireland launch the Vision Impaired Physical Education Teaching Guide. The Guide has been developed to give readers the skills and confidence to teach students who are blind or vision impaired by equipping them with knowledge, skills, and considerations to make PE more inclusive for all; ensuring students with a vision impairment have equal access to participate in physical education activities. Sean Poland, Education and Training Coordinator with Vision Sports Ireland, stated “We believe in the power of physical activity and its ability to transform lives, this vision was shared with our expert steering group who have a vast wealth of knowledge and years of ex-

perience in the area of Inclusive Physical Education. “We came together to develop this resource to address the gap in Physical Education levels of children with a vision impairment in Ireland, where only 1 in 3 children with a vision impairment are engaging in the recommended amount of PE time in school. “I believe this resource will help equip PE teachers across the country with useful techniques and considerations for providing an optimum experience for students with a vision impairment in their class. “This guide is a testament to our com-

mitment to breaking down barriers and providing meaningful opportunities for everyone to engage in physical activity”. The PE resource is a welcome addition to the offerings from Vision Sports Ireland, following on from the Vision Impaired Rugby Coaching Guide which was launched in May 2023. This toolkit marks a culmination of work from the PE Steering Group, made up of subject matter experts. Kerry Footballer, All Star, Player of the Year 2023, and PE Teacher at St. Brendan’s College Killarney, David Clifford, said: “I was thrilled to lend my voice to the launch of such a vital resource. As a PE teacher myself, I know the importance of having such toolkits available and the impact it will have on students with vision impairments across

the country. “Physical Education is a crucial part of each student’s development and learning, this resource will aid PE teachers to ensure all students get the same opportunities to partake in PE lessons. “I would encourage all PE teachers to download this resource, it is an excellent toolkit to be added to any teacher’s library”. This guide will work in tandem with the Vision Sports Ireland training and education framework which already incorporates Vision Sports Awareness Training delivered both online and through Vision Irelands new Learning Management System and our Vision Impaired PE pack which includes an array of adapted equipment all available on www.visionsports.ie.

Re-turn - Deposit Return Scheme Re-turn, the designated not-forprofit organisation responsible for administrating Ireland's Deposit and Return Scheme is playing a pivotal role in guiding retailers, producers, and consumers through the scheme's processes and ensuring its effective implementation. Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme is going live on February 1st, next year. Under the European Union’s Single Use Plastic Directive, by 2025, Ireland is mandated to separately collect 77% of plastic beverage bottles placed on the market. This target rises to 90% in 2029. The Deposit and Return scheme has been introduced to ensure Ireland can reach these targets. Once live on the 1st of February, con-

sumers will give a fully refundable deposit when purchasing bottles and cans with the Re-turn logo ranging from 15 cent to 25 cent, depending on size - 15c will apply to containers 500mls or less and a deposit of 25c for each container

over 500ml to 3 litres. Consumers receive this deposit back when they return the bottle or can to a designated return point. Return points, either manual or Reverse Vending Machines, will be located in the majority of retailers where

Back in 2018 he donated €100,000 to the county boards but his latest offer is ten times better. The funds are expected to arrive in each boards’ bank account by the end of next year. "With Limerick's success in the GAA in recent years, we have seen the joy that this can bring on and off the field and how it enhances the spirit, camaraderie and confidence of communities, urban and rural,” he said in a letter to all county secretaries. "My family and I greatly value the spirit and meaning of community and our GAA, Camogie and Ladies Gaelic Football clubs who are at the heart of communities right throughout the island." bottles and cans are purchased. The new Deposit and Return Scheme is a circular economy game-changer for Ireland, shifting from 'take, make, dispose' to returning valuable materials and maximising their use - creating a circular system for high-value plastics and cans. Currently, only 60–70% of bottles and cans are recycled annually. This is due to several factors, including containers being disposed of in general waste bins, containers being discarded, or ending up in landfills due to contamination in the recycling bin. It is estimated that Ireland consumes 2 billion cans and bottles annually. The missing 30%, which equates to approximately 600 million containers, goes unrecycled. Deposit return schemes are a proven success in over 40 other jurisdictions around the world, including 13 countries in Europe, soon to be 15, and will help us reach our recycling targets.

Jack and Jill founder passes away at 82 The Jack and Jill Children’s Founda Foundation has announced the death of its founder, Jonathan Irwin. Mr Irwin, 82, passed away on Sunday af after a short illness. “He led a wonderful life that has touched and supported so many families and he never tired of helping others, right up un until the end,” said a statement issue by the children’s charity. “Jonathan was our Chief Fundraiser, our Chief Ambassador, who had true grit, charm and compassion in spades.” Named after his late son Jack, the foun foundation has supported 2,964 children across the country over the last 26 years and counting, without any means test, red tape or waiting list. “Jonathan turned his grief and his vision into support for others. ‘What else can I do?’ he’d often say,” added the statement.

Jonathan is survived by his wife Mary Ann O’Brien and their children Lily, Phonsie, Molly and predeceased by sons Jack and John. He is also sadly missed by his first wife Mikaela and their sons Pirate, Jago, Luke and predeceased by their son Sam.

From Formula Trinity to Ireland’s first satellite Trinity physics graduate Pádraig McDermott is a member of the EIRSAT-1 team which launched Ireland’s first satellite last week. He joined the team in October after beginning his PhD in space science at University College Dublin, where the project is based. His role involved satellite operations and working on the ground segment, handling the radios and antennas used to communicate with the satellite. Having been a senior engineer with Formula Trinity last year, taking the lead on electronics as the team constructed a formula one car from scratch, McDermott credited the experience with teaching him the necessary practical skills for EIRSAT-1. Formula Trinity is a student-led project that designs and builds race cars. Students compete globally with their formula-style race car in circuit racing events, testing their engineering. Educational Irish Research Satellite-1 (EIRSAT-1) was built as part of a joint research project by academic professionals and over 50 students at UCD. As a collaborative project, it aims to advance education in engineering and space science among students in Ireland. The satellite, about the size of a shoebox, took off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on board a Falcon 9 SpaceX rocket on December 1, becom-

ing Ireland’s first-ever satellite. With the support of the European Space Agency (ESA), EIRSAT-1 will carry out three experiments while in space. The first will detect the “high energy radiation that is emitted when stars explode in supernovae” with a gamma ray detector, McDermott explained. “Gamma Ray Bursts are also sometimes produced at the same time as gravitational waves so astrophysicists are very interested in detecting them. Gamma rays are absorbed by the earth’s atmosphere so they can only be directly detected by satellites such as EIRSAT-1.” The second experiment will measure the thermal properties of two materials designed for spacecraft. These materials were developed by ENIBO, an Irish company aiming to “redefine the performance, function and value of metals across a multitude of industries and sectors”. The third experiment is an algorithm called wave-based control which will control satellite orientation using the Earth’s magnetic field. This is the first time wave-based control will be used in space. The development and launch of EIRSAT-1 is a historic moment for Ireland. This landmark project is the first to be fully developed and launched as an Irish satellite.

Vegging Out for the Holidays Paudie turns Christmas Green! Love them or fear them at the festive table, it's Brussels sprout Balseason! Paudie Hanafin from Bal lygarron Farm in Co Kerry, has been playing Santa with Brussels sprouts, delivering these little green 'presents' to SuperValu for over ten jolly years. This Christmas, SuperValu is gearing up to sell a whopping 250,000 nets of these controversial veggies. In Ireland, it's not really Christmas dinner unless you're negotiating whether to eat that

sprout or hide it under your mashed potatoes. And these aren't just any sprouts; they come with the Bord Bia Quality Mark, meaning they're top-notch and as Irish as a leprechaun in a woolly jumper. SuperValu isn't just about sprouts though. They're big on the whole 'support local' sleigh ride. Every euro spent on Irish produce at SuperValu spins the economic merry-go-round, bringing a festive €5 back into the Irish economy. So, whether you're a sprout lover or loather, buying them is like giving Ireland a little Christmas gift.

Kerry’s Aislinn Desmond amongst trio of GAA stars planting trees in Kenya The universal language of sport built bridges that spanned cultures and thousands of kilometres, when a group of some of Ireland’s best known GAA stars travelled to Kenya with Self Help Africa including Kerry’s Aislinn Desmond, Fionan O’Sullivan and Stefan Okunbor. Their trip was part of the Plant the Planet Games initiative to plant one million trees and raise awareness of the impact of climate change on some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. The week-long journey included showpiece exhibition matches in Nairobi between the visiting stars and Kenyan Premier League football team AFC Leopards,

as well training sessions for the visiting players with some of Kenya’s elite long distance runners, and visits to Self Help Africa projects in the country. The visiting group - which included hurling, Gaelic football and camogie players - planted trees during their visit to

local communities, and were the special guests at a reception hosted by Ireland’s Ambassador to Kenya, Caitríona Ingoldsby. The players met Ireland’s missionary priest, Brother Colm O’Connell who has been described as ‘the godfather of

distance running in Kenya’, and visited non-profit ball manufacturer Alive and Kicking, and projects being run by Irish charity, Brighter Communities Worldwide. The Plant the Planet Games were organised for the second successive year by former Galway dual player Alan Kerins’ Warriors for Humanity, and the trip was also supported by the Gaelic Players’ Association, and sponsors Optimum Nutrition. Team gear for their trip was sponsored by McKeever Sports and match day sustainability sponsor were Kerry Group. Fionan O’Sullivan said: “What a journey I was lucky to be a part of and share with some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. The work being carried out by Self Help Africa, Warriors for Humanity and Brighter Communities Worldwide can’t really be put into words. A huge thanks to Alan Kerins, Tom Parsons and everyone at the Gaelic Players’ Association for the chance to be involved.”

Pat and Faye Shortt To Renowned Soprano Celine ‘Knuckle Down’ at INEC Byrne set for INEC debut Pat and Faye Shortt return to the Gleneagle INEC Arena on February 2 with their new show ’Knuckle Down’. After their sell out tour of ‘Well’, a collection of mad characters that won over audiences in venues throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland, this father and daughter comedy duo have come together once again and are selling out venues across the country with their new show ‘Knuckle Down’. ‘Knuckle Down’ shows off the incredible talent of these two performers, as they glide seamlessly from stand up to hilarious characterisation of everyday Irish people. They have the genius of taking everyday ordinary situations and making us laugh at the mundane, previously described as being indigenously Irish in their approach and observation of characters. The new show ‘Knuckle Down’ doesn’t

disappoint. Characters such as ‘Michae’ (Pat Shortt) the hapless builder seems to have the answer to all things that are wrong in the world and shares the advice gifted to him by his late grandmother from Tipperary. Another outrageous character is the ‘mother of the child’ (Faye Shortt) at the school railings waiting to pick up her child PJ, it’s not like her at all to talk bad about anyone but she just can’t help herself, sharing her views on the school principal and her tummy tucking friend back from Turkey. The sharp wit and physical comedy genius of this comedic duo will have you in pain with laughter. Tickets from €33.65 are available from www.inec.ie

Soprano Celine Byrne will perform for the first time at Gleneagle INEC arena, Killarney for one night only in January 7.

It will be an evening jam packed with well-known favourites from the world or Opera, Operetta, Musicals, Irish Songs and much more. Programme includes Villia, Merry Widow waltz, Brindisi, All I Ask Of You (from Phantom Of The Opera), O Mio Babbino Caro, Nessun Dorma and Danny Boy …to name but a few. Celine will be joined on stage by Tenor and Gavan Ring and male voices choir The Baldonnel Singers. With such an array of different music being performed, this will for sure be an audience pleaser and a wonderful night out and would make the perfect Christmas gift idea. Tickets from €33.65 are available from www.inec.ie.

Beaufort Wastewater Scheme Local Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill was delighted to receive the news that Beaufort has been included by the Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien, as a successful applicant for funding under the €50m grant targeting the waste water collection and treatment of villages without access to such services. "I have campaigned over a long period of time for a Sewerage Scheme for Beaufort, arranging Deputations, meetings with Uisce Eireann, Notices of Motions, lobbying Council Officials, lobbying Ministers, etc, and on a personal basis I am delighted that Beaufort has been given the Green Light," saidCouncillor Cahill. “The inclusion of Beaufort in this €50m

funding along with 6 other applicants nationwide, is fantastic news. At last we can see some relief coming to the residents of housing developments in Beaufort such as Coolmagort Avenue, on whose behalf I have lobbied loud, long and hard. Their suffering to date has been horrendous and perhaps now that can be finally ended with this funding,” said Councillor Cahill. “This has been a long battle and it gives me great personal satisfaction that I was able to impress upon the Minister and his Department of the deep need for this Wastewater Treatment Plant in Beaufort. I sincerely hope that there is no further delay in order that this hugely important facility is put in place for the people of Beaufort as soon as is humanly possible,” added Councillor Cahill.

Ring of Kerry overnight road closures have ended! The repair works on the N70 Ring of Kerry road near the viaduct at Gleesk are completed. The period of overnight road closures will end at 7.00am on Friday, December 15. Essential structural repairs on the road and the embankment commenced

on 24 October and works were carried out overnight to minimise disruption. "Kerry County Council would like to thank all road users and local residents for their patience and cooperation while these essential repair works were completed," said a council spokesperson.

Glenflesk Nativity Play and Christmas Lights switch-on A most wonderful nativity play was performed by the children from the four schools in the Glenflesk parish last Saturday night in a packed to capacity Barraduff church. “A top class play from start to finish bringing us all back to our own childhood. Totally professional with narration, perfect sound and lighting effects and not forgetting the donkey was also spectacular,” said Glenflesk PRO Seamus Healy. “The children were brilliant and we must

credit all the hard work put in by the parents, teachers and staff loyal volunteers and Fr. Jim our Parish priest for his huge input and wonderful words. “Santa Claus arrived in the church to great excitement and more wonder, dishing out treats for everyone. Next it was out to the Christmas tree and with a few bits of magic Santa had the tree lit up in no time Thanks to Barraduff Tidy Village Group for all their hard work in keeping our village looking so spectacular.”

Local Suzuki dealer wins Customer Experience Award Dineen O’Donoghue have won the Customer Experience Award at the annual Suzuki Ireland Dealer of the Year awards. Suzuki Ireland crowned the winners of its 2023 Dealer of the Year awards. The annual event, which gathers repre-

sentatives from across the country’s 24 dealer network, recognises dealerships that have exceeded their goals and gone the extra mile to ensure an exceptional customer experience. This year, the annual dealer conference was held at Glasson Lakehouse, County

Westmeath and the trophies were presented by four Directors from Suzuki who are Takanori Suzuki, Dale Wyatt, Martin Lloyd and Denis Houston. Presenting the awards, Takanori Suzuki commented: “We would like to congratulate our winners for their fantastic

achievements, and all dealers across Ireland who have worked so hard for our brand during the last 12 months, especially as we sold a record 2,000 units in the Republic. 2,000 Suzuki vehicles sold in Ireland this year translates to a 1.7% market share and with the majority of those sales going to private individuals, customer service is at the heart of the Suzuki dealership experience. This figure represents a much higher proportion of Private retail sales in Ireland versus the industry average. Five awards were presented by Suzuki including to Dineen O’Donoghue who won the Customer Experience Award.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Appealing a Social Welfare Decision What can someone do if their application for a social welfare payment is unsuccessful? If you think you have been wrongly refused a social welfare payment, you can appeal this decision to the Social Welfare Appeals Office or if you can seek a review of the decision. You must appeal within 21 days of the date of the decision letter. There is no charge for making an appeal. To make an appeal you should download and fill out the Appeals Form which is available on line, include relevant documents (for example, your decision letter). You then email your completed form to swappeals@welfare.ie You can also print and fill out the form and post it to Social Welfare Appeals Office, D’Olier House, D’Olier Street, Dublin, D02 XY31or get a paper form from your local Citizens Information Centre

There is no formal appeals process for these payments, but if you are unhappy with a decision on a payment not covered by the Social Welfare Appeals Process, you can ask for the decision to be reviewed by the section in the Department of Social Protection that dealt with your application. If you contact your local CIC, they can advise you about this.

Where can I get help to appeal a Social Welfare decision? The Citizens Information Service (CIS) provides an advocacy service, and many of their advocacy cases relate to social welfare issues. So, if someone feels they have been wrong refused a payment, they should contact their local CIS. They will go through the matter with you and see if you have grounds for appeal. If they can identify ground for an appeal, they will advise on what supporting documentation you may need to support your appeal and they will assist you to put together your appeal. In most cases the CIS will request your file from DSP to examine the reasons for the refusal and identify the factors that gave rise to the decision When appealing a decision, it is important to focus on the reason for the refusal and then provide evidence to show that the refusal was incorrect.

Who investigates the appeal? The Social Welfare Appeals Office (SWAO) operates independently of the Department of Social Protection. It is set up to provide an independent, accessible and fair appeals service in relation to entitlement to social welfare payments. The Office is headed by a Chief Appeals Officer and has its own Appeals Officers who make decisions on appeals. As part of the appeal process, the SWAO notifies the Department of Social Protection section of the appeal and the DSP must send any relevant documents to the SWAO. This also triggers a review of the original decision in the DSP to decide whether it should be reviewed in your favour. In some cases, new evidence is reviewed by a social welfare inspector, or by a medical assessor if the appeal is about a sickness or disability-related payment. If the decision is changed by the Department at this stage, you will be informed. The Department can only change the decision at this stage if the change is in your favour. If the decision is not changed by the Department, your case will be examined by an Appeals Officer. The Appeals Officer may decide your appeal based on written evidence. This is called deciding the appeal summarily or in some cases you may be invited to attend an oral hearing.

Are all social welfare payments covered by the appeals process? No, some social welfare payments are not covered by the appeals process. This is because they are not set out on a statutory basis, for example, Fuel Allowance, Household Benefits, the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance or Supplementary Welfare Payments such as the Additional Needs Payment

For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & 1ST ANNIVERSARY LEANE

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & 1ST ANNIVERSARY SHEEHAN

Treasured memories of Jack Leane Lawlor’s Cross, Tralee Road, Killarney 15th December 2022. As we lovingly remember our beloved son Jack on his first anniversary, his Brothers Gary, Ryan, Rory, his mom Annette and Dad Padraig, wish to acknowledge the support and kindness shown to us by family, friends, neighbours, staff and parents of St Francis Special School, and the wider community on the very sad passing of Jack. We thank all who sent messages, cards, visited our home, brought food and attended Jacks funeral mass in Kilcummin church. To our Families and close Friends who visited Jack frequently and offered support and help which we greatly appreciate. Our supportive and helpful neighbours who took care of many tasks including traffic control led by Donie Broderick our neighbour, one of Jack’s many friends that he struck a bond with. Fr Tom Looney and Fr Paddy O’Donoghue who assisted Fr Sean Jones and Jacks close friend Fr. Derek O’Connell in celebrating Jack’s short but wonderful life. Siobhan McSweeney Kilcummin Parish Sacristan for her help during Jacks mass and all her help since. The beautiful and heart felt music by Jack’s music therapist Claire Adams. We have many happy memories of her home visits to Jack bringing him such joy from her Music. Our great friend Roisin Moore for her wonderful support and Eulogy which captured Jacks world perfectly. To Mike & Mary O’Shea Funeral Directors for their compassion and guidance in the aftermath of Jacks passing. Fr Sean Jones celebrated a beautiful mass which showed how full a life Jack had and how great an impact he had on so many for such a young man. One such person was Fr Derek who formed a special bond with a big musical influence, Jack would love Fr Dereks visits and his musical renditions, a true friendship formed at an early stage at St Francis Special School between them, his mass on Fridays with Fr. Derek and the many visits Fr. Derek would pay to the classroom and to Jack at home. Fr. Derek’s support and visits gave us as a family great comfort. St. Francis Special school played a big part in Jacks life and he spent many happy years there, from the bus journeys with Johnny Meara, his carers/ Sna’s Mary, Betty, Bernie, teachers Louise, Kathleen, Breda, Elaine and Catriona to mention just a few among the many great people at St Francis special school, we consider all in St Francis an extension of our own family. We sincerely want to thank Liz O Dea, Jacks Nurse of over 7 years. Their relationship was far more than Professional, they formed a strong friendship through both School and Home Life. The pair enjoyed great times with walks, art classes, fancy dress and lots more mischief between them. The Love and Care Liz showed to Jack throughout those years and the Support shown to the whole Family during Jacks Illness, we will be forever thankful. Marion Joy, Jack’s first friend and carer from a young age, entered our household and became part of it bringing such love and attention to Jack for many years. Marion we thank you for all you gave to Jack and us. Over Jack’s 14 years we met many professionals, it would not be possible to list all but some stand out in our memories, the many doctors, nurses and specialist in Crumlin, CUH, University of Limerick and the Cashel ward in KUH. Dr. Sharon Condon Paediatrician, Dr O’Mahony CUH and Dr Webb and Dr Pat Kiely at Crumlin hospital. The Support Services of Lauralynn Ireland and the Jack & Jill Foundation. The many professionals from Enable and Kerry Intervention & Disability Services, Denise Casey Ot, Grace Dukes and Isabel Eyre Physical Therapists along with Jack’s physiotherapist (Wole) Olawole Ajibare & Alan Lyons and Annette Wendig – Reflexology. Throughout Jacks life Ross medical played a critical part of his care, Dr Donal Coffey and Dr Rosemary Kelliher along with all the staff at Ross medical would always go above and beyond to assist us all and provided great support for all our family. We sincerely thank you for all you did for Jack and our family. Karen Lovett Jack’s Outreach Nurse that coordinated all the professional services and supported us throughout Jack’s life, Karen was present with us since Jack’s first day in KUH until his last at home. Her visits during Jacks illness provided us with great comfort and gave us the confidence to care for Jack in the comfort of his own home.

In loving memory of Pat Sheehan Glounacopple, Kilcummin, Killarney who died on 19th December 2022. On this the occasion of his first anniversary on 19th December, Geraldine & Ilona, and the rest of Pat’s family wish to extend our sincere appreciation to all those who sympathised with us after his sudden death. We want to acknowledge our wonderful friends and neighbours with special thanks to Pat & Patricia Cronin. We want to thank Patrick & Eileen O’Donoghue for their kindness and support, and all of Pat’s friends and colleagues there at the Gleneagle Hotel and INEC. We also want to thank Mike & Mary O’Shea, and Seamus, of O’Shea’s Funeral Home. We are so grateful to them for their help through those most difficult days. A special word of thanks to Sarah Dineen and all at Killarney Camogie Club for organising the ‘Pat Sheehan Memorial Tournament’. This meant so much to us all. Thank you to Fr. Jim Lenihan and all at Kilcummin Church for the beautiful funeral and months mind masses. We also would like to thank all who took part in the guard of honour - Killarney Camogie Club, Kerry Camogie, The Gleneagle Hotel, Kilcummin GAA and his own ‘Old Chapel Rovers’. Thanks to Fr. Pat O’Donnell for coming to the house, and a final thank you to the paramedics who gave their all to help our beloved Pat. Every message, card, phonecall, visit and condolence on R.I.P. was so appreciated, and it was heartening to see the affection and esteem that Pat was held in by so many. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. No farewell words were spoken No time to say goodbye You were gone before we knew it And only God can tell us why.

It would not have been possible for Jack to remain at home only for the Palliative care team led by Dr. Mags Clifford, the frequent visits when needed and advice enabled Jack to be where he loved to be, at home with his brothers and parents like any young boy should be.

It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

This allowed jack the dignity to live out his last year at home where he belonged. And finally, a word of thanks to ‘Our Wonderful Boy Jack’. You have made us both the family and the individuals we are today. You have shown us, what pure love is, how joy and love come the simplest things in life, how to persevere and rise above the most difficult of challenges in life and shine through with such bravery. Jack you beautiful Smile remains etched in our Memories Forever.

Pat’s 1st Anniversary Mass will be held on Thursday 11th January at 7.00pm in Kilcummin Church.

The day that you came into this World Jack, Was so full of love and Joy We held you in our arms for hours Our Beautiful little boy. Our sorrow is beyond compare It aches deep in our chest Sleep softly now, In eternal Rest. We will Love you forever and a day In our memories you’ll live on And so long as we live and breathe You will never be truly gone.

Jacks First Anniversary Mass will be celebrated on Sunday 17th December at 11.30am. in Kilcummin church

Legion face Crokes in tantalising O’Donoghue Cup final EAST KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

_________________________________________________________________________

Killarney Legion v Dr Crokes Sunday at 2pm Fitzgerald Stadium Fierce town rivals Killarney Legion and Dr Crokes meet on Sunday with the Dr O’Donoghue Cup and, perhaps more importantly, local bragging rights on the line. Legion were the victors the last time these sides met in the East Kerry final when Stephen Stack led the club from Derreen to glory in 2019. Crokes have bounced back in style, however, exerting their dominance in 2020 and 2022 to clinch back-to-back titles via final wins over Spa. (The tournament was

Jonathan Lyne (Legion) and Tom Doyle (Dr Crokes).

not played in 2021 due to the pandemic.) Peter Keane is now at the helm for the Legion and how he would love to sign off on the 2023 season on a positive note. It doesn’t get more positive than beating your near neighbours in a final. Crokes will be plenty motivated too, though. Brian McMahon’s charges have already secured one significant piece of silverware in the form of the County League Division 1 crown. Adding the O’Donoghue Cup to that would constitute a decent season as they continue to blood new players with the ultimate aim of challenging once again for the Kerry Club and County Championships.

FORM

The Lewis Road club are coming into

this final in imperious form having most recently overcome the challenge of Spa in last weekend’s semi-final. They made light work of that particular task as goals by Tony Brosnan, Kieran O’Leary and Micheál Burns propelled them to massive 3-14 to 1-6 win. After a low-scoring first half, they were much the better team in the second period as they extended their lead from three to fourteen with relative ease. One slight concern for the defending champions is the fact that Gavin White was subbed off early in the second period. The Kerry star has just returned following a hamstring injury so Crokes fans will be hoping that his withdrawal last weekend was more of a precaution than anything else. As for Legion, they have also impressed

en route to the final with professional performances against Listry, Fossa and Kilcummin under their belts. A brutal winter wind made life difficult for both Legion and Kilcummin in the semi-final but the town club managed it slightly better, picking off their scores with the wind in the final quarter to emerge victorious on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-6. They were solid at the back on the day with Man of the Match Peter O’Sullivan catching the eye. With the likes of Danny Sheahan, Darragh Doherty and Jonathan Lyne also providing defensive cover, this appears to be an area of strength for Keane’s side. They will certainly need to be at their best on Sunday if they are to repel the attacking threat of Brosnan, Burns and co.

15.12.2023 The new Kerry FC shirts for the 2024 SSE Airtricity First Division season were recently unveiled at Kerry Airport as the league newcomers get ready for their second season in the League of Ireland. Once again made by New Balance, the home outfield kit is green with a gold trim and stylish pattern on the front; the away kit is white blending into green at the waist; and the goalkeeper jerseys are a ‘vibrant orange’ and ‘popping pink’. "We are proud to enter the second year of our sponsorship of Kerry FC as they unveil their new kits for 2024,” CEO of Kerry Airport Ireland, John Mulhern, said. “The club captured the imagination of soccer fans throughout their first season, commanding loyal support right until the final whistle. Kerry FC, with the Senior and Academy squads, is succeeding in its goal to elevate the profile of soccer in the county to a new level while giving talented players an opportunity to shine. “At Kerry Airport, we recognise the crucial role that sport plays in bringing communities together either through playing, coaching or attending matches. We’re proud to play our part and we’re

Airport as the club’s front-of-jersey sponsor for a second season. “The team at Kerry Airport have been first class partners and we look forward to work-

ing with them again in 2024. We are blessed to have Kerry Airport Ireland as a gateway on our doorstep to welcome family and friends home for Christmas. “Now that our new kits have arrived, they will make excellent stocking fillers for all the family. Supporters can now purchase the home and away outfield and goalkeeper jerseys, in all sizes from children to adults, in-store and online from KerryFC.com." Details of all fixtures for the 2024 campaign will be announced in the coming weeks. The Tralee-based club are pleased to report that season ticket sales for the upcoming season have already surpassed their total for 2023. A number of players who played key roles for the team during their maiden voyage have penned professional contracts for 2024.

15.12.2023

Will it be a Christmas fairytale for Leary and the Crokes? Eamonn Fitzgerald previews the O’Donooghue Cup final between Crokes and Legion The boys of the NYPD choir still singing Galway Bay, and the bells are ringing out for Christmas day. The blessed day is just nine days away. The memorable Fairytale of New York has shot to the number one spot in the music stakes following the recent death of Shane McGowan, the punk poet and the greatest Pogue of them all. Will it be Fairytale at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday next for Kieran O’Leary, bidding for his unbelievable record 13th O’Donoghue Cup medal? Superstitious? Unlucky 13? Legion will be bidding to arrest the domination of Dr Crokes in the most prestigious local GAA cup. Will Legion shatter the dream in the local derby 2023 O’Donoghue Cup final? The O’Donoghue Cup is always special and the added bonus this year is that it brings together the great Killarney town rivals Legion and Dr Crokes at 2pm on Sunday. It will be just a week before Christmas when football considerations should go indoors, reviewing 2023 and planning for 2024 at the various AGMs. It is a shame to see this competition concluding just before mo dhuine sets off from Lapland, bearing gifts. To whom, the green and whites or the black and amber? It is not the fault of the EKB, hamstrung, curtailed and basically snookered by the ridiculous game schedule that is controlled from the top with local boards doing the best they can. One longs for the era when the O’Donoghue Cup final was played at the end of August or early September. Top of the sod allowed players to show their great skills and shirt-sleeved supporters enjoyed the Indian summers. The reality for Sunday next will most likely be strong winds, cold and rain.

CHRISTMAS

It will be Christmas before Christmas for one of the local town teams. The 2023 semi-finals were played last weekend in the Fitzgerald Stadium. On Saturday, Dr Crokes proved far too strong for a disappointing Spa side. In the 2022 final Crokes had a runaway win and history did repeat itself. 3-14 for Crokes and 1-6 for Spa. Spa only led once when Michael McCarthy goaled and were still very much in contention at half-time, trailing 1-5 to 1-2. A special piece of wizardly footwork by Tony Brosnan yielded the Crokes goal. The introduction of the

ageless Kieran O’Leary set the Crokes on a scoring spree in the wind-assisted second half. He scored a typical Leary goal and almost got another as all Micheál Burns had to do was palm the ball into the net. That other ageless Spa warrior Stam gave it his all once more, but there was no stopping Crokes. On Sunday worse weather conditions made it very difficult to score and that is the main reason that the score ended 0-8 to 0-6 favouring Legion. Kilcummin had to start without the injured Noel Duggan and Kieran Murphy: the former could not start, and it was half-time before he came on. He made a big difference when he did enter the fray. It was level at the interval, five points each. Legion were the better team overall and deserved to go through even though Kilcummin were pre-match favourites. While the final will be previewed ad nauseum in the local pubs over the next 48 hours, both teams and managements will be focussing on the final preparations for the derby. It will be a case of a result on the day. Spare us the agony and pain of Dingle v Castlehaven. For the Cork club it was heaven on a dreadful day of bad weather and survival to win the Michael O’Connor Cup. That Munster club cup is in memory of Coiny, that wonderful Killarney man, a teacher in Anabla NS, a great club player and

winner of so many O’Donoghue Cups with Crokes in the 50/60s and the dynamic figure behind the development of the Fitzgerald Stadium.

KEEPERS

The two goalkeepers on Sunday are top class. All-Ireland winners with Kerry as sub keepers, Brian Kelly and Shane Murphy will be called on to make brilliant saves but will also set the tactical pattern with kickouts, so crucial in the modern game ever since Cluckie made his own of it with Dublin. Kelly and Murphy will most likely go very short, usually to one of the full back line, holding possession and building from there. Possession at all costs, the scourge that is keeping so many patrons away from the games. Not the fault of Kelly and Murphy. Stats show that almost 70% of kickouts at intercounty level are sideways taps to a back. Both keepers have splendid long kicks, and they will be used as a second option where we can expect the likes of Pádraig Lucey and Mark O’Shea to pluck them from the clouds. The experienced Jonathan Lyne, Darragh Lyne or Jamie Alade will play the role of the off the shoulder ball carrier. Otherwise, Jonathan may be trying to curb Micheál Burns. Crokes have Gavin White back after that very long injury and his experience will be vital at centre back. However, his

trademark searing run through the opposition’s defence will hardly emerge, after such a long layoff. He will be minding the house, and it may well be Evan Looney who will make the upfield runs. Who will Crokes designate to mark Legion’s best scorers, Peter McCarthy, Finbarr Murphy and the evergreen Jameso? It is nine years since James O’Donoghue starred in the 2014 All-Ireland final. The legs may be tiring, but he knows where the posts are and delivers great scores with that dependable ciotóg. Where will Legion play himself and Murphy? When will they spring the youthful scorer William Shine? It is rarely in the modern game that the starting 15 play out the full game. Injuries necessitate changes but also the pace of the game is such that fresh legs can make all the difference. Tony Brosnan, back after injury which kept him out of the All-Ireland, is a key scorer for Crokes both from play and from frees. He was man of the march v Spa. Legion will need to curtail him and may well assign such duties to Rob Leen, Cian Gammell or Peter O’Sullivan, Man of the Match against Kilcummin. Plenty other avenues to be explored. Place kicking, marks and not forgetting the 45s. These will be goalkeepers’ duties. Kelly and Murphy will have no difficulty with length. Accuracy is crucial. From my observations over several years, Kelly scores on most occasions. Murphy’s stats are not as reliable. Advantage Legion. The ref’s decisions may well have a big bearing, especially in a close contest. He has an unenviable assignment. He won’t please both sides of players and supporters. I just hope he uses common sense in his assessments of what constitutes a card offence. In my view the litmus test is to decide if the foul was deliberate when the offender takes out his opponent, or where accidental clashes occur without malice. Then is it black, yellow or straight red? Such decisions can have a big influence on the outcome. I hope the referee’s back-up team will be pro-actively engaged and supportive for the ref of any off the ball incidents. Then the ref does not have to depend on the roar form the crowd to help him to make an informed assessment and fair decision.

The O’Donoghue Cup is always special and this year it brings together the great Killarney rivals.

EKB

What is so special about the O’Donoghue Cup? The EKB was founded in 1925 when eight clubs attended the inaugural meeting: Currow, Farranfore, Firies, Headford, Kenmare, Dr Crokes, Kilcummin and Killorglin. Later Legion, Fossa, Gneeveguilla, Spa, Scartaglin, Listry, Rathmore, Cordal, St Patrick’s East Kerry Hurling, and Kenmare joined the EKB at different stages. Dick Fitzgerald became the first chairman with six-time All-Ireland winner Paul Russell (Mangerton View) as secretary. The present O’Donoghue Cup competition as we know it today didn’t emerge until 1954 honouring the memory of the late Dr O’Donoghue, a native of Glenflesk and a wonderful doctor who shared his medical expertise serving all. Many told me over the years that treatment was first and foremost by ‘Doctoro’. Payment was of secondary importance for the great man. For those who were in a poor position to pay, the service was provided, and shillings weren’t sought. The Park Place hotel at the top of High Street beside the traffic lights, became the GAA headquarters, particularly for Legion, Kerry and the EKB. The O’Donoghue cup wasn’t played for the first time until 1954 when the Legion defeated Kilcummin 1-8 to 1-0. Danny Jim (O’Donoghue), on behalf of the memorial committee, purchased the O’Donoghue silver cup in Cork and presented it to the East Kerry Board. Appropriately, the first winners of the O’Donoghue Cup were the Legion. Dr O’Donoghue was their president

for many years. Legion retained the title in 1955, defeating Dr Crokes 3-6 to 1-2. Then Dr Crokes took over and won nine out of the next ten years. Rathmore were the only other winners in 1963. One of stars during that period was Jackie Looney, the current president of Dr Crokes. He went on to win a record 10 O’Donoghue Cups held jointly with Con Clifford (RIP) until other greats such as Colm Coper, Eoin Brosnan (the new chairman of Dr Crokes), Brian Looney, Johnny Buckley, Fionn Fitzgerald, Daithí Casey and many more, including Kieran O’Leary, won a shot of O’Donoghue Cup medals. Best known to his friends simply as Leary, 36-year-old Kieran may not start on Sunday, but he will certainly come on, bidding to ease past Colm Cooper and Eoin Brosnan who have 12 O’Donoghue Cup titles. Piseogs abound in relation to unlucky 13. Fairytale for Leary, or a reality check from the Legion ending his dream and bringing the O’Donoghue Cup back to the club of its former president? According to the song ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’, the 12 drummers will be drumming on the 12th day of Christmas. On Sunday the rival supporters on the terrace in The Park will be anxious, and the Cathedral bells may be ringing out for Legion or Dr Crokes just seven days before the Holy Day of Christ’s birthday. For some it will be joyous; for others it will be the tolling bell. Dreams and reality rarely merge. They might in The Park on Sunday next, and it is only a might.

Athletics stars honoured at Killarney Valley awards night 270 people from the club and the wider community attended the Killarney Valley AC awards night at the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney on Saturday last. A very special treat for everyone attending was the premiere screening of a documentary that tells the story of the club’s high jumper Jordan Lee and his training through the Covid-affected period leading into the Tokyo Paralympic Games. The documentary got a standing ovation from the huge audience who were all amazed at Jordan’s story of resilience. The club raised funds at the event for a very worthy cause, the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit, and their volunteers were also in attendance. In his opening address, Club Chairman Jerry Griffin painted a picture of how the Killarney Valley AC club and athletes have enjoyed a meteoric rise this past few years with membership now standing at 370, including nine different nationalities. In 2022, Killarney Valley was selected as the Athletics Ireland Development Club of the Year; earlier this year, Jean Courtney, the club secretary, was announced as the Sport Ireland Volunteer of the Year; and the clubs’ athletes secured a record medal haul of 47 national medals, 97 provincial medals and one European team medal in 2023. Kerry Schoolboys/Girls League RESULT: Inter League U14 Kerry v West Cork. In their SFAI U14 Boys Inter-League clash, Kerry Schoolboys/ Girls League secured a 3-1 win against West Cork at Killarney Celtic's grounds. Ballyhar Dynamos' duo, Ryan Quilter (2) and Ryan Vickers scored for Kerry. Facing a swirling wind, Kerry opened the scoring early on, but West Cork swiftly drew level with a long-range effort. Despite some good chances, Kerry were unable to regain the lead and headed to the break with the scores even at 1-1. The introduction of Killarney Celtic's Stephen Shine brought stability to Kerry's midfield with Adam Griffin of Castleisland AFC growing more influential. Adjusting well to the blustery conditions, Kerry were better in controlling possession and were back in front with goal from the penalty spot early in the half. They doubled the advantage midway through the second period and closed out the game with plenty of shots on target that drew some impressive saves from the opposing goalkeeper. A solid outing from Kerry to wrap up the group stage. The side will aim to further improve performance levels as focus turns to the knock-out phase of the competition.

Killarney Legion GAA O’DONOGHUE CUP: Our Senior Men qualified for our sixth O'Donoghue Cup final in twenty years after eventually getting the better of a game Kilcum-

min side. The game, played at Fitzgerald Stadium, was in the eye of Storm Fergus with a gale force wind blowing down towards the dressing room goal. Kilcummin had the benefit of the conditions in the first half but points from Ryan O'Grady and a brace from Peter McCarthy had us 0-3 to 0-1 in front after eight minutes. Kilcummin eventually settled into the conditions and despite another point for James O’Donoghue we were in arrears by one point heading towards half time. A late point from Eoghan O’Sullivan made it 0-5 each as the teams headed for some respite from the weather. The wind grew stronger in the second half, but Kilcummin made an assured start, clipping over a free to go one clear, 0-6 to 0-5. After a few unsuccessful forays into the Kilcummin half, Finbarr Murphy regained parity with ten minutes on the clock. Substitute Will Shine stole forward to put us one clear with Jameso adding another as the clock ticked towards 60 minutes. To be fair to Kilcummin they battled to the very end, meaning our defence had to be on our toes. Thankfully they were and after five minutes of overtime referee Brendan Brosnan blew the whistle for the final time. Final Score Killarney Legion 0-8 Kilcummin 0-6. Team: Brian Kelly, Peter O’Sullivan, Danny Sheahan, Rob Leen, Darragh O’Doherty (Capt), Jonathan Lyne, Cian Gammell, Padraig Lucey, Jamie Alade, Finbarr Murphy (0-1), Darragh Lyne, Eoghan O’Sullivan (0-1), Peter McCarthy (0-2), James O’Donoghue (0-2), Ryan O’Grady (0-1). Subs Will Shine (0-1), Jamie O’Sullivan, David O’Sullivan, Darragh Fleming, Shaun Keane. The final is pencilled in for Sunday December 17th at 2pm in Fitzgerald Stadium, where our opponents will be Dr Crokes, who defeated Spa in the other semi-final on Saturday. CLUB AGM: A well-attended AGM was held in the Randles Court Hotel last night. David Randles chaired a comprehensive review of the clubs activities this year and paid tribute to all those who undertook various roles from officers to coaches to all the various subcommittee members. He paid particular tribute to Lara O’Brien for her role as Club Secretary as Lara is stepping down. Denise Fogarty was welcomed back into the fold, having previously served in the same position for four years. The Club finances were also discussed with particular emphasis on a renewed effort to fundraise. With our facilities upgraded in recent years it comes with an increased maintenance cost. The ever-busy Field and Facilities committee were rightly lauded for their efforts in keeping our playing surfaces in top conditions and everyone from grass cutters to pitch liners were suitably praised. Donal O’Leary gave a comprehensive round up of the Club Juvenile activities and with over a dozen teams between boys and girls it certainly is a busy department. The

need to recruit new members and retain existing ones is of course of the utmost importance and all club members are being urged to pay their part on that count. A subcommittee will also be established to research, review and survey areas of strength and weaknesses within the club. This process will commence shortly with the hope of being up and running by early 2024. The following will serve as officers for the year ahead: President Tommy Regan; Vice Presidents Noel Wade, Donie Fleming, Joan Culloty, Joan Fogarty, Johnny Culloty, Mary Regan, Sean O’Grady, Jimmy O’Leary; Chairman Dave Randles; Secretary Denise Fogarty; Vice Chairman Liam McGuire; Treasurer John Foran; Registrar Fiona Ni Chonchubhair; PRO Enda Walshe; Children's Officer Linda O’Donoghue; Juvenile Chairman Donal O’Leary; County Board Delegate Donal Culloty; East Kerry Board Delegate John Hegarty; Ladies Chairperson Ted Healy.

Dr Crokes GAA EK O'DONOGHUE CUP: Semi Final - Dr. Crokes 3:14 Spa 1:06. After a physical battle in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday we have progressed to the East Kerry Final after a 14-point win over Spa. Playing against the wind in the first half, we dominated much of the game. Tony Brosnan opened the scoring with two consecutive points from play. In the 23rd minute of the half our oppositions slipped the ball into the back of the net after a sloppy bit of defending. The next play saw Micheal Burns send a high ball in to Tony Brosnan who responded with an absolutely fantastic goal having worked well to get around two Spa defenders. We went in leading by 2 at half time 1:05 to 1:02. We continued to dominate the second half, playing some fantastic football. All 20 players who saw game time made a great contribution and stepped up when needed. We saw 6 different Dr. Croke scorers in the second half. Kieran O’Leary's introduction in the second half saw him add 1:01 to his name. He was unlucky to add another goal when his brilliant effort was saved by the Spa goalie and knocked into the back of the net by Micheal Burns. Tony Brosnan deservedly received the Man of the Match award having scored 1:05 on the day. We now face neighbours Killarney Legion in the Final on December 17th in the Fitzgerald Stadium.
