Staffing concerns as new Irish Coast Guard helicopters go live

The first of the Irish Coast Guard’s new AW 189 helicopters operated by Bristow Ireland, the new provider of Coast Guard aviation services, commenced operation from Shannon Airport at midnight on Saturday last.

The transition of the Shannon base commenced on November 1, when personnel including pilots, technical crews, engineers and support staff transferred from CHC to Bristow Ireland.

The transition will enable continuation of services including maritime and inland Search and Rescue, Helicopter Emergency Medical Service support to the National Ambulance Service as well day and night-

time aero-medical support to the offshore islands. The Department of Transport and the Irish Coast Guard recognises the positive collaboration between CHC and Bristow Ireland in their efforts to ensure a safe and effective phased transition of services and also acknowledges the support of the wider search and rescue community including Coast Guard Units, RNLI and Mountain Rescue teams in assisting

with work-up training conducted by Bristow Ireland. Meanwhile Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae has raised concerns on the new service. There is a proposal by the Ambulance Service to cut the second specialist paramedic from the helicopter emergency air ambulance service that is provided in the region.

“This would in essence mean that the aircraft would have a pilot , a copilot and only one specialist paramedic instead of two,” he said.

“Because of the geography of our area it is most important that the service is allowed to continue into the future.”

“I am making strong representations on the matter to ensure that the second paramedic will continue to be in place.”

Deadline for Áras Phádraig redevelopment submissions

Killarney residents have until 4:00 pm next Thursday, (December 19), to submit their feedback on the proposed redevelopment of Áras Phádraig.

The project involves the demolition of the existing building and construction of a new three-story complex. This complex will house a theatre and community centre, a primary care centre,

a public plaza, and an ancillary building for utilities and storage.

The plans also include modifications to the Lewis Road car park entrance.

Full details of the proposed development, including plans can be found on the Kerry County Council website.

Residents are encouraged to review the plans and submit their feedback by the deadline.

Mr. Craig, a talented keyboard musician and vocalist, was a former student of the MTU Cork School of Music.

A cremation service was held on Thursday, 12 December, at The Island Crematorium.

Tributes have been paid to the young musician, with many expressing their shock at his untimely passing. The CADA Performing Arts stage school, where Mr. Craig performed in numerous shows, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media.

Green light for Milltown Respite Care Centre

Newly elected TD for Kerry, Fianna Fáil’s Michael Cahill has welcomed Kerry County Council’s granting of Planning Permission for a Respite Care Centre in Milltown by An Bórd Pleanála.

“This is fantastic news for Milltown and for all of Kerry in general, as further respite beds are urgently required in every corner of our county. This is a godsend and will relieve pressure on other centres and allow families to have loved ones closer to home,” said Deputy Cahill.

“This is an investment of €9m in Milltown, which will outside of the construction of the facility, deliver up to 60 permanent jobs, with a 46 bedroom residential respite care centre, and an assisted living community of 12 two-bedroom houses for older people. It is a ‘win win’ project for potential patients and their families and also for all those who will be employed there. It will ease pressure on some family members who presently have to travel significant distances to visit their loved ones. For these, it may mean more regular time together.”

"This development will also include 113

car parking spaces for residents and visitors, public outdoor amenity areas, public reception areas, treatment activity rooms, dining and lounge rooms, resident day and space areas, a hairdressing salon, staff facilities and ancillary support rooms."

Pat Sheehan Memorial Walk raises €4,910 for the Irish Heart Foundation

A recent memorial walk held in the late Pat Sheehan’s honour raised €4,910 for the Irish Heart Foundation.

Pat, who passed away on December 19, 2022, was known for his active lifestyle, positive attitude, and dedication to his community. He was a key driving force behind camogie in the Killarney area. A memorial walk was organised in October by his friends and family to honour his memory and raise funds for the Irish Heart Foundation.

The funds, which were handed over this week, will support the Irish Heart Foundation's vital work in preventing and reducing heart disease and stroke.

The Sheehan family expressed their gratitude to everyone who participated in the memorial walk and donated to the cause.

“We would like to thank all who attended the walk, as well as any donations received. It didn’t go unnoticed. We would also like to thank the people who organised the event, anyone who volunteered on the day and the Gleneagle Hotel for their generosity. Pat was close to so many and the attendance really reflected that,” they said.

The walk was organised by Pat’s friends Anthony O’Mahony, Gerry Reen, Gerard Murphy, Pat’s niece Nóirín and work colleague Eimear.

The walk commenced from the Gleneagle Hotel to Muckross Abbey. Pat worked at the Gleneagle Hotel for 26 years. He had built strong friendships both inside

and outside of work, respected by many. His smile and sense of humour would brighten anyone’s day. His loss was very much felt on the day.

“Thank you to everyone who helped organise Pat’s memorial walk and to all who participated and contributed to the Irish Heart Foundation. The incredible turn-

out was a tribute to Pat, reflecting not just the impact he had on our lives but the deep love and respect the community holds for him. His warmth, humour, and dedication was known to many, and it was clear on this special day just how much he meant to us all,” said Patrick O’Donoghue, MD of the Gleneagle Hotel.

BNI Kerry celebrates 25 years of local success

The BNI Kerry Chapter (formerly Killarney Chapter) marked its 25th anniversary in style last Friday night with a celebration attended by around 40 guests, including current and former members of the Chapter.

The event, at the Dromhall Hotel, celebrated not just a quarter-century of business networking but also the vital contributions the group has made to the local economy and the personal and professional lives of its members.

Since its founding in 1999, BNI Kerry has been a driving force for businesses in the region. With over 1200 visitors hosted, and almost 10,000 one-to-one meetings conducted with over 17,000 referrals exchanged, the Chapter has facilitated an impressive €15,706,289.12 in business passed between its members.

“These numbers represent more than just transactions. They signify the wages paid, mortgages covered, and opportunities created in our local economy. It’s about real people and real impact,” said long-standing member and current Chapter President Anne Hannan.

The event also highlighted the chapter’s broader contributions beyond financial success. “What you won’t find in the stats,” Anne noted, “are the lifelong friendships, business partnerships, and invaluable knowledge gained from being part of a diverse and supportive network.”

The celebration paid tribute to the chapter’s founding members, including Donie Moynihan, who was recognised for his unwavering commitment and drive in establishing the group. Anne shared her personal memories of joining BNI 23 years ago and how mentors like Donie and Mort Murphy shaped her approach to business. “BNI Kerry gave me the guidance I needed at a crucial time in my business journey,” Anne added. “The lessons I’ve learned and the connections I’ve made here are priceless.”

Mort and Donie Moynihan marked 25 years of BNI Kerry Chapter membership.

Netanyahu’s corruption trial

Benjamin Netanyahu’s corruption trial marks a crucial juncture in Israeli politics, drawing significant attention from the nation and the international community.

As the trial continues to unfold this week, the long-serving Israeli prime minister finds himself at the center of allegations that have not only challenged his leadership but ignited debates about the integrity of Israel’s democratic institutions. Netanyahu is charged with bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in three separate cases. These cases, widely referred to as Cases 1000, 2000, and 4000,

encompass a range of allegations around ethical boundaries.

In Case 1000, Netanyahu is accused of accepting lavish gifts from wealthy businessmen, such as expensive cigars and champagne, allegedly in exchange for political favours. The second case, known as Case 2000, involves accusations that Netanyahu engaged in secret negotiations with Arnon Mozes, the owner of the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper. The alleged deal sought to secure favourable media coverage for Netanyahu in return for his efforts to undermine a rival publication. Case 4000, the most serious of the three, claims that Netan-

yahu provided regulatory benefits worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Bezeq, Israel’s largest telecommunications company, in exchange for favorable coverage on Walla News, a media outlet owned by Bezeq’s controlling shareholder, Shaul Elovitch.

Netanyahu has steadfastly denied all charges, characterising them as a politically motivated “witch hunt” orchestrated by his adversaries and the media. He maintains that accepting gifts from personal friends does not constitute illegal behaviour and that his decisions as prime minister was always guided by the best interests of Israel.

Mean United

It has been widely reported this week that the English and European super-club Manchester United has replaced its traditional £100 Christmas bonus for staff with a £40 Marks & Spencer voucher, a decision that has drawn criticism from employees and fans alike.

This change is part of a series of cost-cutting measures implemented under the leadership of co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who acquired a 27.7% stake in the club in February 2024.

Historically, the club provided staff with a £100 cash bonus during the festive season. However, this year, employees received a £40 voucher for the high street retailer Marks & Spencer. The decision follows the cancellation of the annual staff Christmas party, a tradition that has been halted due to financial constraints.

These austerity measures are part of a broader strategy by Ratcliffe to streamline operations and reduce expenditures. Earlier this year, the club announced plans to cut approximately 250 jobs, nearly a quarter of its workforce, to align staffing levels with current performance and financial objectives.

Shannon Airport

Last week, revenue officers conducted operations across Shannon Airport, Dublin Airport, Rosslare Europort, and the Midlands, leading to the recovery of contraband valued at over €2.5 million.

The seizures included 9,791 counterfeit items, valued at €1,981,615, approximately 17.5 kg of herbal cannabis, worth nearly €350,000, about 2.3 kg of cocaine, valued at €162,400, various other illicit drugs, valued at €4,500 and 1,320

liters of alcohol, with an estimated retail value of €15,640, potentially costing the Exchequer €8,414. The counterfeit goods, confirmed by the Rights Holder as infringing Intellectual Property Rights, included 9,156 pairs of counterfeit Nike-branded trainers in 35 designs, valued at €1,693,860. This major seizure was made after Revenue officers risk-profiled and searched a freight shipment arriving at Dublin Port from China.

The herbal cannabis, along with 1 kg of

cocaine and other illicit drugs, was seized following risk profiling, aided by detector dogs Sam, Grace, and Ciara.

An additional 1.3 kg of cocaine, valued at €92,400, was discovered during an intelligence-led operation. Revenue officers intercepted a passenger arriving at Dublin Airport on a flight from France. A man in his 30s was arrested by An Garda Síochána and has since appeared in court. Investigations into all these seizures remain ongoing.

Ireland to ask ICJ to broaden definition of ‘Genocide’

Government approval has been given for Ireland to intervene in South Africa’s ongoing International Court of Justice (ICJ) case against Israel under the Genocide Convention.

The case was taken by South Africa last December over alleged breaches of the Genocide Convention carried out by Israel during the war in Gaza. Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin entered today’s Cabinet meeting seeking approval for Ireland to intervene in two cases currently before the ICJ.

The Government has also approved intervention in The Gambia’s case taken against Myanmar in 2019 under the same Convention. Myanmar is accused of genocide over operations by its armed forces against the Rohingya people.

“By legally intervening in South Africa’s case, Ireland will be asking the ICJ to broaden its interpretation of what constitutes the commission of genocide by a State,” Mr Martin said following today’s Cabinet meeting.

“We are concerned that a very narrow interpretation of what constitutes genocide leads to a culture of impunity in which the protection of civilians is minimised.

“Ireland’s view of the Convention is broader and prioritises the protection of civilian life – as a committed supporter of the Convention, the Government will promote that interpretation in its intervention in this case.

“Intervening in both cases demonstrates the consistency of Ireland’s approach to the interpretation and application of the Genocide Convention.”

Approximately 44,800 have died in Gaza since Israel’s invasion of the besieged enclave in October 2023. The invasion followed Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel in which 1,200 Israelis were killed and a further 250 were taken hostage by the militant group.

Much of Gaza has been levelled by the bombing in the past 14 months and more than two million people face precarious conditions such as limited access to food, water, medicines and shelter daily, while the bombing continues.

Social Democrats suspend newly elected candidate Eoin Hayes

Eoin Hayes, a newly elected Teachta Dála (TD) for Dublin Bay South, was suspended from the Social Democrats this week, following revelations about his financial ties to Palantir Technologies, a U.S. software company known for its work with the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF).

Hayes, who served as a member of Dublin City Council from June 2024 until his election to the Dáil, had previously been employed by Palantir from 2015 to 2017. During his tenure at Palantir, Hayes received 7,000 company shares as part of his compensation package. At a press conference on December 10, 2024, he claimed to have divested these shares before entering politics. However, he later admitted that he sold the shares in July 2024, a month after his election to Dublin City Council, earning approximately €199,000. Hayes issued a statement saying, "I unreservedly apologise for providing incorrect information and I am now correcting the record."

The National Lottery Regulator is urging adults to refrain from gifting scratchcards to children this Christmas.

This appeal follows a recent mystery shopping operation conducted by the independent office, revealing that nearly three in ten stores were willing to sell scratchcards to individuals under the age of 18.

Carol Boate, the National Lottery Regulator, emphasized that National Lottery tickets and scratchcards are unsuitable gifts for minors, regardless of the giver's intentions.

"Childhood gambling can result in various harms and significantly increase the likelihood of gambling problems in adulthood," she stated. "It is crucial for adults to recognize their responsibility

to protect children by not giving them scratchcards during the festive season," she added.

The mystery shopping initiative, carried out by Ipsos B&A, involved 15 to 17-year-olds who attempted but did not complete the purchase. Findings showed that 72% of retailers nationwide refused to sell to underage customers, an improvement from 62% in 2018. However, regional differences emerged, with only 57% of retailers in Dublin refusing sales to minors, the lowest rate in the country.

The Regulator has called on Premier Lotteries Ireland (PLI), the National Lottery’s operator, to take additional steps to ensure better compliance with the law among its retailers. Further mystery shopping operations are planned to achieve full adherence.

importance of trust between politicians and the public, stating, "It is imperative

The Social Democrats responded by suspending Hayes from the parliamentary party with immediate effect. Deputy leader Cian O'Callaghan emphasised the importance of trust between politicians and the public, stating, "It is imperative that the media, who hold politicians to account on behalf of the public, can rely on the information they receive from elected representatives."

Hayes has announced his intention to sit as an independent TD when the Dáil

The controversy has drawn criticism from other political figures. Sinn Féin's spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Matt Carthy, called for Hayes to resign and donate the proceeds from the share sale to Palestinian charities, arguing that Hayes "profited personally from a company that benefited from Israeli breaches of international law."

SPSL student wins trip to European Parliament

Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra student Eoin Cashman, has returned from an unforgettable educational trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.

Cashman won the trip after winning a nationwide quiz organised by Graduate.ie, a programme introduced to him by his teachers, Ms. O’Regan and Ms. Aherne.

Cashman's dedication to the programme's weekly quizzes focused on the European Union (EU) earned him a spot among the competition's winners. The trip, sponsored by the Southern Regional Assembly, provided Cashman with the opportunity to connect with students from across Ireland.

The highlight of the trip was participation in the Euroscola EU Parliament event. Students sat in parliament seats, engaging in structured debates and discussions. They even had the chance to vote on a proposal to combat climate change.

"I was incredibly fortunate to be cho-

sen," Cashman said. "The Graduate Programme is fantastic because it connects students nationwide, and all travel expenses are covered."

Cashman wasn't just limited to parliamentary proceedings. He also had the chance to ask questions of EU representatives and experts.

"This experience was unforgettable," he added. "Simulating the workings of such an important governing body and interacting with young people from other member states was incredibly eye-opening."

"Words cannot express the benefit and prestige this opportunity provided. We engaged in insightful conversations and debates, where everyone's unique perspective contributed to a well-rounded analysis of the chosen topic. Our discussions even caught the attention of a former American presidential candidate, who offered us valuable advice."

Students also had the chance to explore Strasbourg and the historic Heidelberg Castle.

Plans to celebrate and socialise over the festive season are in full swing as people head out to pubs, clubs and restaurants in the leadup to Christmas and the New Year. Planning a good night out however includes making plans for getting home safely.

As part of its first joint Christmas road safety appeal between Kerry County Council and the Kerry Division of An Garda Síochána, the theme of the appeal is ‘None for the Road’, focusing on ‘No alcohol or drugs while driving’.

Impaired driving is still a high occurrence among motorists. Up to the end of November, over 7,000 drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 56% were alcohol related and 44% were drugs related.

An Garda Síochána in Kerry are committed to keeping roads safe for every-

one and will have extra patrols in place throughout the county over the Christmas period. Gardaí are urging road users

to make road safety a priority this Christmas and to ensure that their holiday season is full of joy and not tragedy.

Superintendent David Callaghan, Kerry Garda Community Engagement in Tralee said: “An Garda Síochána in Kerry wish to remind all road users in the County that as we head into the Christmas period it is essential that we all remember the importance of road safety. The festive season is a time for family and celebration, but unfortunately, it can also be a time of increased risk on the roads. We want to remind everyone to drive responsibly, to plan their journeys, and to make arrangements for a safe journey home if they are going out to celebrate.”

‘None for the Road’ Christmas road safety campaign Christmas gift ideas for motorsport fans

Two new books chronicling the rich history of Irish rallying have just been released in time for Christmas.

‘Legends All’ by Patrick Buckley is a deeply personal account of his father Ger Buckley's illustrious rally career. Ger, a two-time Irish National Rally Champion, balanced a demanding career behind the wheel with family life and business ownership.

Ger Buckley, from Banteer, in north Cork was a five-time Circuit of Kerry Rally winner and the 1980 Rally of the Lakes winner.

The book captures what Patrick considers “the golden era of rallying” featuring not just Ger's achievements, but also the stories of his fellow drivers and the vibrant rally scene of the time. Proceeds from the sale of Legends All will

benefit Brain Injury Ireland, a cause close to the Buckley family. The book is available at locations throughout Ireland, including locally at Tomo Burke's Electrical in Castleisland. Orders can also be placed directly via email at legendsallbook@ gmail.com.

Meanwhile, legendary TV broadcaster Alan 'Plum' Tyndall has also released his latest work, 'Circuit Brakers'. This 154page, full-colour book captures the history of the Circuit of Ireland Rally, from 1978 to 2024, the years that Tyndall would have covered the rally for RTE, UTV and RPM.

Readers will be transported back to the late 1970s when iconic cars like the Ford Escort RS1800 battled it out with the Vauxhall HSRs and Opel Ascona 400s. The book chronicles the sport's “golden age” fuelled by sponsorship from Roth-

mans Rallying, and the arrival of awe-inspiring Group B supercars like the MG Metro 6R4s and Audi Quattros. Circuit Brakers also explores the changing landscape of Irish rallying. As drivers like Bertie Fisher and Austin MacHale rose to prominence, the sport transitioned from Group A to World Rally Cars. However, with increased car performance came a decrease in mileage, leading to a debate about whether the modern 'Circuit of Ireland' truly lives up to its name.

The Circuit of Ireland Rally last visited Kerry in 1983 so the first few chapters will be of interest to local fans. More recently local co-drivers Dermot O'Gorman, Paul Nagle and Noel O'Sullivan have all won the more condensed Easter classic.

1ST ANNIVERSARY

LLOYD DAVIES

In loving memory of Eric Lloyd Davies Haven’s Rest, Tralee Road, Killarney 15th December 2023.

Our time together was special

So were the memories we made And although you live in Heaven now

Those memories never fade.

We bow our heads in silence

And remember our son with love

And we know that you are up there

Watching from above.

Everyday’s a struggle

And nothing feels the same

And our hearts break a little more

Everytime we hear your name.

You’ll always be remembered And time may heal our hearts

But a piece of us is missing

Since the day we had to part.

If Heaven is for Angels

Then we know that’s where you’ll be And we know you will be waiting When Heaven calls for us.

Always remembered and loved by his parents Richard and Kay, his brother Peter, sister-in-law Elaine, nephews Luke and Jeff, grandmother Megan, aunts Angela and Patty, and uncles-in-law Danny and Brendan.

1st Anniversary Mass for Eric will be celebrated on Sunday 15th December at 10.30am in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.

A part of you will always stay.

Somehow we know that you must be an Angel passing through Cause there was never anyone as Beautiful as you”.

We will love you always and ever, Mom and Dada.

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. And hear me underneath the storm.

Feel me when you’re all alone And in a busy crowd

Feel me in the rainfall

Feel me underneath the clouds.

Yes you can always see me

Though I’ll look a little different And you can always hear me

The hurt is hard to hide

When it is your husband

The hurt goes deep inside

The day that we were married

They told us we were one

But they never told us what to do

When half of one is gone.

What do you do with half a heart

Now the other half is not there

You were the other half of me

A life linked to my own

What do i do with half a life

Now that i am on my own.

From your loving wife Lynda.xx

O’CARROLL

Christmas in Heaven

I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, with tiny lights, like Heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow, The sight is so spectacular! Please wipe away that tear, For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas Choir up here. I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring, For it is beyond description to hear the angels sing.

I know how much you miss me. I see the pain inside your heart, But I am not so far away. We really aren’t apart. So be happy for me dear ones. You know I hold you dear. And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above. I send you each a memory of my undying love

After all “Love” is the gift, more precious than pure gold, It was always more important in the stories Jesus told.

Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do, For I can’t count the blessings or love he has for you.

So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear. Remember, I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

Killarney men claim Munster glory to round off perfect season

Dr Crokes secured their ninth Munster Club football title with a clearcut 0-15 to 1-6 win over Tipperary champions Loughmore-Castleiney on Sunday. The Tipp side came with good credentials after winning the hurling and football at home, but the return of All-Ireland-winning manager Pat O’Shea has delivered a clean sweep of Kerry County League, Club Championship, County Championship, and Munster Championship for the Crokes.

They will go into an All-Ireland semi-final against Ulster champions Errigal Ciaran, probably on January 5, most likely in Portlaoise although that fixture has not been announced as yet.

At senior club level, Kerry clubs have not been that prominent in Munster. Nemo Rangers lead the pack with 13 wins followed by Dr Crokes on nine, and two each for Austin Stacks, Castleisland Desmonds and Laune Rangers. On one each are Kerins O’Rahillys and An Ghaeltacht. All silverware is welcome but there is a special fáilte isteach by Crokes for the Munster Club trophy, the Michael O’Connor Cup, which is dedicated to the memory of the outstanding Crokes player and administrator Michael Coiny O’Connor. Many spectators in the stand were cocooned from the breeze but it was anything but gentle. I observed the prematch kicking by both sides and realised that there was a strong breeze blowing straight down the field into the entrance goal.

PATIENCE

Crokes were patient and then raced clear through the second half to win far easier than the score suggests. The only goal of the game came at the end of extra time and by that stage Crokes captain David Naughten was ready to lift the coveted cup.

Even with it, Loughmore-Castleiney came with a game plan of crowding out Crokes and denying them scoring opportunities and were content to not give any opening for a Crokes goal. It was a poor first half, a packed defence keeping Crokes at bay. Neither side even got a chance of a goal. It was that tight and was hard to watch. The Tipp men were quite happy at half-time to be just one point adrift.

Why did Crokes win? They have plenty of great players individually but more importantly in the plans of chief strategist Pat O’Shea it is the team that matters and the dividend has been rich in titles as one heads to the end of 2024.

They are lucky, of course, and they rode that tight rope at Dungarvan two weeks earlier. They might well have been caught but they weren’t. Forwards usually get most of the kudos but, in my view, the Crokes defence is the basis for success. They are a magnificently cohesive unit and concede very few scores. Also, their Kerry stars present and past deliver match-winning performances for the club as much as for Kerry. Gavin White, Fionn Fitzgerald, Tony Brosnan, Micheál Burns and a splendid goalkeep-

He is still in flying form now nominally at wing back but more accurately just about any place he is needed, popping up free as Boyle Roche’s Bird with the gift of bilocation so often also attributed to Padre Pio. His children were quickly on to the field for the after-match jubilations and also there was Brian’s father Tom Looney, one of the star-studded UCC team of the early 70s. They were affectionately known as UCK (University College Kerry) and also defeated Loughmore-Castleiney in the January 1974 Munster final. Most of this Crokes team are in their prime years, though, so they are well-balanced. Mark O’Shea is a colossus at midfield, really plucking them from the clouds, particularly in the second half where he lorded the exchanges. Tony Brosnan and Micheál Burns delivered 10 points, enough to win on Sunday last. Other scorers were Kieran O’Leary and Tom Doyle (two each), and a point by Brian Looney.

DR CROKES: Shane Murphy; Evan Looney, Fionn Fitzgerald, Maidhcí Lynch, Charlie Keating, Gavin White, Brian Looney; Mark O’Shea, Micheal Potts; Micheál Burns, Gavin O’Shea, Tom Doyle; Tony Brosnan, David Shaw, Cian McMahon. Subs: Kieran O’Leary for McMahon (45), David Naughten for Keating (55), Daithí Casey for Shaw (59), Alex Hennigan for Doyle (59), Mark Cooper for Potts (61).

er Shane Murphy provided the turbo charge. Rising tides lift all boats and it was no surprise to me that 19-year-old Maidchí Lynch, the youngest player on the field, was awarded Man of the Match. He takes his primary duty of defence very seriously and his direct opponents rarely score. He is very comfortable on the ball, has speed and stamina to burn, and is able to go up-field and score. Mastery of skills is the sine qua non for a county player, but it isn’t enough. The player needs grit, determination, ne’er say die attitude, and confidence. Tomás Ó Sé will be delighted to have this man on board.

AGE

Loughmore-Castleiney are an old team with just two of the starting 15 under 30 years of age. Crokes have three over 30s starting in defence: Looney, Fitzgerald and Murphy reach the cumulative 100 years. Add in Casey, O’Leary and Moloney from the bench and it is well clear of 200 years.

Brian Looney has been Crokes most consistent player for close to two decades.

Two out of three Munster football finals went as expected for the Kerry clubs in last weekend’s provincial championships. Hopes were realistically high for a clean sweep.

After all, Kerry clubs have dominated the junior and intermediate grades not alone in Munster but also at All-Ireland level. Teams from the Kingdom have won every Munster junior title from 2014 to 2022 before Cork’s Cill na Martra were victorious last year.

In recent years, East Kerry clubs Fossa and Rathmore won the All-Ireland Junior and Intermediate Football Championships respectively, carrying on the great Kerry tradition of successes. Full credit to all the Kerry winners who have made the most of the system and it certainly is an advantage because of the way clubs are structured and graded in Kerry. There has been míle murder for many years complaining about Kerry’s unfair advantage. Try to explain to small rural clubs around Ireland how Fossa, a small club but with rapidly increasing numbers, can have the Clifford brothers winning All-Irelands with Kerry and still playing junior football with Fossa, as they are entitled to do. The same goes for Rathmore who were

quite entitled to have All-Ireland-winning Kerry stars like Shane Ryan and Paul Murphy leading them to All-Ireland intermediate glory.

Look out for big criticism regarding last Saturday’s Munster intermediate cakewalk by Austin Stacks. They absolutely demolished Aherlow, the Tipperary champions, by 7-7 to 0-2 win. Fair dues to the Rockies who were stung by their relegation from senior status in Kerry. Remember they previously won an All-Ireland Senior Club title with five All-Stars on that team. Just three years ago Stacks were in the Munster senior final. Different class as the unfortunate Aherlow discovered at Mallow. It was more like a hurling score. I still do not understand how the midCork Kilmurry club were allowed to play in this year’s Munster Junior Championship. They defeated Firies - a sweet win no doubt after losing the 2022 and 2023 Munster finals. One expected that if a club wins the Munster junior title they are ineligible for the same grade the following year and must advance to intermediate grade. The official explanation is that a restructuring in Cork has allowed Kilmurry to compete in this competition for three straight years. They are now the first Cork club since Knocknagree in 2017 to claim Munster success at this level. Kilmurry finished the game with 13 players. They proved too strong for Firies

who are new to this standard. Firies will be disappointed with that 0-9 to 1-10 defeat because it is so hard to win out in Kerry. They have been on a roll, defeating Ardfert in the Kerry final (and Ardfert have tasted All-Ireland Club success themselves).

Firies gave great value and hope to their supporters as they won through Munster with dashing displays. This growing parish has a very young team overall and can climb back to win. Their toughest battle in 2025 will be to win out in Kerry.

It was cold and Firies had a strong wind advantage at the tail end of Storm Darragh in Rathkeale in that first half, but they were stunned by a Kilmurry goal in the fifth minute. Firies got going and led by 0-6 to 1-1 after 21 minutes. However, Kilmurry hit a purple patch to lead 1-5 to 0-7 at half-time.

Facing the strong wind after the break, Firies had it all to do and trailed by four points going into the last quarter. Then Pádraig de Brún was black carded. Two minutes later Kilmurry’s James Mullane got his second yellow card to even the numbers and they finished with 13 players when Kyle Keleher was red-carded. It did not give Firies a chance to come back.

FIRIES: B McCarthy; C Palmer, D Brosnan, B O’Leary; N Donohue, P de Brún, D O’Mahony; D Brosnan, T Clifford; C Doe, J Horgan, D Donohue; S Palmer, M Daly (c), J Flynn. Subs: S Cooper for D Donohue (38), P Daly for C Doe (45), L Brosnan for M Daly.

Time to set boundaries in toxic GAA-AFL relationship

Adam Moynihan shares his thoughts on AFL clubs poaching Kerry’s top talent

It’s about time someone said something. Speaking at the recent county convention, Kerry GAA chairman Patrick O’Sullivan called out the practice of AFL clubs coming to Ireland and cherrypicking our best young players. In addition to Cillian Burke, who recently signed for Geelong, and Rob Monahan, who is coming off his rookie season with Carlton, O’Sullivan claimed that AFL scouts are tapping up seven other Kerry starlets.

“If our younger players keep emigrating to Australia the outlook for Kerry senior teams going forward will not be a good one,” he noted. “Kerry players are at the heart and soul of our county and we, as an Association, have to figure out a method of retaining and keeping our players at home in Ireland. We in Kerry aren’t the only county suffering from this issue, there are players from other counties choosing to emigrate as well. We will be calling on the GAA to form a committee to look into this matter.”

Nobody is saying Burke shouldn’t go and nobody is wishing him anything less than the very best. If it goes well he will get our congratulations and if he decides to come back he will be welcomed home with open arms.

We can respect and support the players who are taken from us while also questioning the way they’re being taken. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

AFL clubs are doing nothing to help these kids develop up until adulthood and then they’re snatching them up for free. And they’re giving GAA clubs and counties nothing in return (apart from a handshake emoji on Twitter).

He also raised the possibility of compensation. It was a strong statement from the Killarney man and I’m sure his words will resonate with a lot of Kerry supporters. The situation has gone beyond a joke. When Geelong signed Kerry’s most promising footballer last month, they posted a graphic on Twitter/X that showed Burke and his Kerry compatriot Mark O’Connor side by side. The caption read “County Kerry represent *handshake emoji*”. I couldn’t quite believe my eyes. Are these boys trying to gaslight us into thinking we’re friends?

Because, let’s be honest, if there is a relationship between the Cats and Kerry football then it’s a pretty toxic one. Kerry give and they give and they give. The Cats take and they take and they take.

If Kerry football was seeing a therapistand God knows we probably need one –the advice would be obvious: it’s time to set some boundaries. That’s exactly what O’Sullivan is proposing.

Of course, any such talk is bound to elicit stock comments about how great an opportunity this is for the players and how we should be wishing them well. These words, though well intentioned, are redundant because I’ve never once heard anyone – not even the staunchest GAA head - say anything to the contrary.

I know that as a people the Irish tend to place a lot of importance in being liked by everyone, but let’s put diplomacy to one side here for a second. As a Kerry football fan, I don’t care about Geelong. Frankly, I’m not interested in them or the sport they play. I only want what’s best for Kerry football and consistently having our best athletes taken away from us is not a good thing. It’s heartbreaking. Burke could legitimately have been the difference between Kerry winning and losing the next All-Ireland. Are we supposed to just sit here and pretend like that doesn’t hurt?

The problem as things stand is that AFL clubs are not obliged to give anything back. These are amateur, uncontracted players they’re signing so, from their perspective, why would they? As the chairman suggested in his address, it will be up to GAA chiefs to state their case and perhaps try to somehow appeal to AFL bosses’ better nature.

On our end, the GAA will certainly have to do more to encourage our young stars to stay. Can we offer them a vision of life in this country that can’t simply be trumped by an Aussie scout taking out his phone and showing them photos of Bondi Beach? Can we guarantee them careers? Can we look after them in other ways that stop short of straight out paying them (which seems to be anathema to most stakeholders in the GAA)?

At least Kerry football is taking the first step by acknowledging that this thing we have going on with the AFL is not healthy. Whether it’s friends, lovers, or sporting bodies on opposite sides of the globe, every relationship needs a little give and take.

Doolan hat-trick sends Blues through to last 16

Killarney Athletic advanced to the next phase of the prestigious Munster Junior Cup with an impressive 4-0 win over Cork opponents Crosshaven on Sunday.

The visitors started brightly down in Woodlawn but they were punished for missing an early chance when Luke Dool-

an’s strike crossed the line at the other end in the 18th minute. Josh Bowler provided the assist.

Bowler was again instrumental in the second goal as he fed Roko Rujevcan, who in turn played a beautiful defence splitting pass through to Doolan. The Athletic attacker hit a low and powerful shot to

beat the advancing Crosshaven keeper to double the host’s advantage. After missing a couple of opportunities to extend their lead, they went in at the break 2-0 up and the next round beckoned. Crosshaven began the second half strongly, however, and Athletic knew the next goal would more than likely decide the tone for the remainder of the game. Thankfully from their point of view the Kerrymen managed to make it 3-0 in the 52nd minute as Doolan completed his hat-trick after pressing the keeper into a mistake.

To be fair to Crosshaven, they didn’t drop their heads and they kept the pressure on, enjoying the majority of the possession albeit without creating real chances on goal. It was all about game management now and Athletic managed to keep their Cork rivals at bay.

With Crosshaven pushing on in search of a consolation goal late on, Rujevcan got the ball on the right, beat three defenders with some excellent skill, and worked his way into the penalty area. He then pulled the ball back to the onrushing Bowler who hit a low shot to the back of the net to put the icing on the cake.

The Blues are now in the pot for the last 16 of the Munster Junior Cup as well as the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup.

Elsewhere in the Munster Junior, Killarney Celtic exited the competition at the hands of Peake Villa of Thurles. The Tipperary side prevailed on a scoreline of 1-0 with the goal coming early in the first half.

advance to National Cup semi-final

St Paul’s sent the Trinity Meteors crashing back down to earth and in the process qualified for the semi-final of the National Cup after an intense battle in Dublin on Saturday.

Having Lorraine Scanlon back in their lineup was a huge factor. She missed the league encounter due to GAA commitments and she put in an outstanding display on her return, especially in the second quarter when the Killarney women opened up a 13-point lead.

Scanlon dovetailed brilliantly with Megan Ormiston inside and the duo managed to subdue the threat of Emma Merriweather who can create havoc if allowed. Outside, Morgan Lenehan was given very little leeway to shape the game like she did in the previous encounter and Coach James Fleming will be particularly pleased with his side's

defensive display.

Fleming, who welcomed Paris McCarthy back to the squad, was happy with the win. “We got everything right and hopefully we'll have the injured Rheanne O'Shea back in action for the semi-final. Paris will be with us as well so that's another boost. We'll be looking forward to the semi-final after Christmas.”

It was in the second quarter that St Paul’s really got a grip on the game, that period opened by a nice move from Leah McMahon. They held Meteors to nine points in the period and winning the battle under the boards played a crucial part. It gave them the foothold to drive with Mathilde Diop dancing in for two neat baskets. Scanlon was now in her pomp, winning rebounds at one end and cashing in at the other. Denise Dunlea and Simone O’Shea also hit from downtown and winning the quarter by 22-9 was a massive factor in the overall context of the game. Emma Merriweather hit the ground

running in the third quarter, trying to whittle down the 44-31 lead, and while she had initial success, Megan Ormiston, Gracen Kerr and Scanlon soon burst that balloon. Connaire and Grace Prenter had another go at it but Diop held them at bay.

Síofra O’Shea also did some sterling work defensively in this quarter but Lenehan and Mulligan did have some joy from the free throw line to make it an 11-point game, 56-45.

Like the previous quarter, Merriweather hit first in the fourth as the Meteors started to crank up the heat. Ormiston relieved the pressure with two great baskets before Mulligan slipped in another Meteors three, but almost instantly Kerr replied in kind.

Grace Prenter kickstarted a purple patch for the home side, her eight points helping to cut the gap to three with just three minutes to go. Kerr then weaved her way in to give St Paul’s some breathing space, and Ormiston came up with a brave defensive stop to quell the Meteor rhythm. Mulligan did hit another three but Paul’s held the whip hand, hitting the last five points of the game from the free throw line.

the Meteors.

McMahon and Kerr did the

to help their side book a table at the eagerly anticipated semi-finals. Paul’s will play Killester in the last four on January 11/12.

As for the league, the Waterford Wildcats will be the next visitors to Killarney this coming Saturday. The game tips off at 4pm in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre.

Killarney Athletic

U16 DIV 2: Killarney Athletic 4-2 St Brendan's Park. The Blues made the trip back to league leaders Park yesterday morning despite the storm that had taken place. Captain Twomey won the toss which meant we were playing with the wind in the first half. The boys got off to a lightning start with 2 goals from Conn in the opening 5 minutes including one from the spot after Kenneth was brought down inside the area. The lads kicked on and kept piling on the pressure which led to James getting the third. Right on the brink of half time the windy conditions made it difficult for Park as Kenneth whipped in a corner that went straight in. 4-0 at half time. We knew Park would come flying out at us with the wind to their advantage in the second half and that they did. They pulled one back early on in the half but our defence of Micheál, Luis, Liam and Paddy along with keeper Jamie held firm. Conn nearly had his hat trick only for a great save from the Park keeper. The home side pulled another back to make it a nervy final 10 minutes. This didn’t phase our boys as they kept the heads and held firm all throughout seeing out the result as deserved 4-2 winners. The lads were excellent from minute one and I can’t fault any of the 14 who played their part today. Thanks to Park for a sporting game.

U16 NATIONAL CUP: Killarney Athletic 0-1 Fairview Rangers. Our U16s welcomed Fairview Rangers to Woodlawn this morning and were hit with a blow in the warm up when Tadgh had to withdraw from the squad due to injury. Playing against a strong wind and very good Fairview Rangers side in the first half the boys played some great football and Gerry pulled off two excellent saves but all in all we were pretty comfortable during the half. 0-0 HT. we were dealt another blow at HT when Paddy had to retire due to injury and Jayden slotted in at CB. There wasn’t too many chances for either side, but the definitive moment came mid-way through the half when the Fairview player headed home a long free kick. The boys kept going to their credit but couldn’t find a way past the strong Fairview defence. On the balance of play, the better team won on the day, and we wish them all the best in the remainder of their season. For our boys, our focus now turned back to domestic action and the remainder of the season. Thanks to Paddy for officiating on the day which was challenging in the conditions.

U14 DIVISION 2 NORTH: A solid performance by our U14Bs this evening as they came away with the 3 points after travelling to Tralee to play Park. A great response to get their season back on track after losing in their previous fixture, keep this momentum going now

lads! MOTM - Dylan O’Connor. U14 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic 0-4 Killarney Athletic A.F.C. Sean Quill 1, Max Moynihan 1, Patrick O’Connor 1, Shéa Driver 1. Our U14 A team returned to league action last night & made the short trip across town to play our neighbours Killarney Celtic. A very solid performance from start to finish saw our boys take home the 3 points. All 17 players played their part. Well done lads. With a number of long-term injuries. It was great to see 2 players return to the team and get back on pitch. Sean Quill again showed his clinical finishing in front of goal, in only his second game back after a long injury. Captain Max Moynihan returned to the team last night after a long spell out and got his name on the score board. Well done lads. Thanks to Killarney Celtic for a sporting game.

The only goal of the game came after 10 mins when Peake scored from a penalty. Celtic did have the ball in the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Unfortunately Celtic could not unlock the Villa defence and so bowed out of the competition.

U16 SFAI NATIONAL CUP: Killarney Celtic 1-1 Aisling Annacotty. Celtic came out on top in this dramatic cup tie which went the distance before Celtic prevailed. Aisling Annacotty with the backing of the wind led 1-0 at half time. Celtic came back in the 2nd half, but it took a late equaliser from Luca Mosca to rescue the tie. Both sides had opportunities in extra time but could not score so the tie went to penalties. On this occasion luck favoured Celtic, who gained advantage in sudden death to

go forward to the open draw.

U14 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic 0-4 Killarney Athletic. Celtic never stopped trying but on the night it was Athletic who were stronger.

U12 SFAI NATIONAL CUP: Killarney Celtic Green 1-2 Tulla Utd. Dylan McCarthy. Celtic bowed out of the U12 National Cup after a game effort against Tulla. Wind and rain made conditions very difficult for both teams last week. Celtic led 1-0 at half time after playing with the wind. Tulla came back in the 2nd half to gain the upper hand and qualify for the next round.

U12 DIV 2: Killorglin AFC 2-2 Killarney Celtic Hoops. Dwayne Koeller, OG. Celtic Hoops showed great battling qualities to come from behind twice to gain a point away to Killorglin. Down 1-0 at half time Celtic responded when Dwayne Koeller scored after good approach work. Killorglin hit the front again but Celtic came again and found an equaliser.

GIRLS SENIOR PREMIER: Listowel Celtic 1-1 Killarney Celtic. Katie Doe. Killarney and Listowel played out a draw after a fine encounter. Killarney led after Katie Doe made a powerful run into the box and finished to the net. Listowel came back and levelled things up. The 2nd half was a tight affair with defences on top.

GIRLS U13 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic 2-0 Castleisland. Leah Mannix 2. Celtic maintained their good form with a hard-fought win over Castleisland. 2 penalties in the 2nd half while playing against the wind saw Celtic gain the points. Castleisland exerted some late pressure but Celtic held strong to take the win.

MUNSTER CLUB FINAL: Dr. Crokes 0:15

Loughmore Castleiney 1:06. History was made last Sunday in Mallow as we won our 9th Munster Senior Football Title with a comprehensive win over our Tipperary opponents. We started well and opened the scoring in the first minute of play through the boot of Tom Doyle. We controlled the half, keeping our opposition scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the game. With fantastic football all over the pitch we went in leading 4 points to 2 points at half time with points coming from Tom Doyle, Micheal Burns (2) and Brian Looney. The second half began exactly like the first with Tom Doyle opening the scoring in the first minute of the half. We dominated the half with Mark O'Shea soaring in midfield and Man of the Match Maidhcí Lynch controlling things at the back. Points from Micheal Burns and Tony Brosnan gave us a 10 point to 5-point lead going into the last quarter. The introduction of Kieran O'Leary saw him add two consecutive points to his name. With a 9-point lead going into injury time we know the job was done. Loughmore narrowed the gap right before the final whistle with a goal to leave the scoreboard reading 0:15 to 1:06.
