Christmas Bumper Edition

Merry Christmas! CHRIS DAVIES Manager of Killarney Advertiser

As the year comes to a close, we have the opportunity to reflect on what has been another eventful year locally. This year held particular significance for the Killarney Advertiser as we celebrated 50 years in business. It was heartening to see that we were not the only local business with cause for celebration, as O’Connor’s Pub (100 years), Healy’s Shop (100 years), and Sheahan’s Pharmacy (70 years) also marked significant milestones. One of the most rewarding aspects of working with the Killarney Advertiser is having the chance to connect with many lovely local people and organisations and I have to say, the past year didn't let us down in that regard. As always, locals generously supported various causes, but one story that stood out for me was Lily’s Foundation, which raised an incredible €35,670 for causes close to the family’s heart. We tip our hats to The Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, who once again organised a series of topnotch events throughout the year, and we had great fun covering them all. In terms of local development, it was fantastic to report that the former Pretty Polly and Sara Lee site is finally going to be transformed into a hospitality college, with a number of housing developements also on the horizon. We look forward to pressing local government in 2024 on other sites we have continuously raised issues with, St. Finian's and Áras Padraig to name but two.

This year also marked the groundbreaking ceremony in Derreen, where construction on a new sports facility will soon kickstart. This facility will include a single-story community hall with two full-size basketball courts, a gymnasium, a judo room, a multi-function room, meeting room, and other amenities. It will benefit numerous local sports clubs, including the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, St. Paul's Basketball Club, Killarney Judo Club, and Killarney Celtic. While there were many joyous moments to look back on, 2023 will also be remembered as a year of great sorrow. Local stalwarts synonymous with everything that is great about Killarney, such as Tom Cronin, Dermot O’Sullivan, and Paul Coughlan, all sadly passed away this year. Our thoughts are with the families of these individuals and all the other families who lost someone dear to them this year. Looking ahead to 2024, the Killarney Advertiser team is excited to continue providing you with the same high-quality content, engaging stories, and insightful perspectives that have made us an integral part of our community for the past 50 years. Once again, we extend our heartfelt thanks for being a part of our journey. We are truly grateful for your readership and support.

Esme O'Sullivan wins Killarney Advertiser Art Competition What can we say but a huge thank you to all the schools and students who took part in our Christmas Colouring Completion. We received over 400 entries and we had a very difficult job whittling it down to one winner. The competition drew an impressive array of entries, each showcasing the unique artistic talents of the participants. However, it was Esme O’ Sullivan’s (aged 12) from 6th class in Lissivigeen N.S that emerged as this year’s winner and can be seen on the front cover of this, our Christmas Bumper Edition. Esme’s masterpiece featured an idyllic winter scene, complete with snow-dusted Killarney mountains, a portrait of Rudolph, and a striking multicolour sky in the backdrop. Her masterful use of colour brought the Christmas scene to life, evoking a sense of warmth and holiday cheer while still capturing the essence of Killarney at Christmas time. When asked about her inspiration,

she revealed that she wanted to draw something that had a Killarney theme. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week Esme said that she is looking forward to Christmas at home with her family, in particular her two sisters Fia and Lauren. Esme is not just a talented artist, she also competes with Scorchers Gymnastics & Cheerleading in Killarney and is just back from winning gold in the 21CC Championship last weekend. For Christmas Esme is hoping to get an Air Track so she can continue to practise her gymnastics at home. For winning the competition the Killarney Advertiser has also given her a brand new art set and gift voucher so that she can continue to draw at home. See page 24 for runners-up winners

WINNER: Esme O’ Sullivan (aged 12) from 6th Class in Lissivigeen National School.

Another fabulous year in Ireland’s tidiest large town An end-of-year message from Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Joint Presidents Johnny McGuire and Pádraig Treacy As 2023 draws to a close, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce believes the town and its people can reflect on a really successful year during which time so many existing projects reached a new level and a number of hugely positive initiatives were advanced to make the country’s premier tourism capital a better place to live in, to do business in and to visit.

CHRISTMAS IN KILLARNEY

The year reached a truly spectacular conclusion with the Christmas in Killarney festival which proved a massive hit and saw the streets lined five-deep with children – and the young at heart – waiting to catch a glimpse of Santa Claus and the magical festive floats and fun-filled Disney characters. An added attraction this year was the parade being led by a convoy of fabulous vintage tractors – all afforded a festive makeover – to mark the 10th anniversary of the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club.

An additional €35,000 – provided through the Ukrainian Support Fund – was spent on the already incredible Christmas street lights and decorations and there are additional plans to greatly enhance the Christmas in Killarney celebrations in 2024 to copper-fasten Killarney’s reputation as Ireland’s Christmas capital. And that’s not all – the Wander Wild Festival and the St Patrick’s Festival, both held in March, and the 4th of July Festival, which sees Killarney celebrate Independence Day with its American friends, will also be more elaborate and more colourful in 2024.

TIDY TOWNS

One of the real causes for celebration in Killarney in 2023 was the fantastic news that we were named Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town in the national Tidy Towns Competition, in addition to winning the Kerry award and the south west regional award. That was quite an achievement given that the adjudication takes place in mid-summer, a time when Killarney is at its busiest and the town is bustling. A dedicated Tidy Towns Committee, featuring representatives of Kerry County Council, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and other dedicated individuals, and chaired by Michael Gleeson, worked long and hard and with real purpose to give Killarney every chance of success this year

and that drive and determination really reaped dividends when the results were announced in Croke Park in early October. Killarney was, in fact, just a single point behind the overall winner, Abbeyleix, in the Tidy Towns competition and every effort will be made in the coming months to put us in pole position to win the prestigious overall award for the first time since 2011. Much of the credit for the success in the Tidy Towns competition has to be attributed to the dedication of the council’s top class outdoor crews and the rebirth of the Killarney Looking Good Competition which returned with a new format, new categories, a new determination and new sponsors in the form of MD O’Shea & Sons and O’Mahony Media Ltd. There is nothing really like a little friendly competition amongst friends and neighbours to encourage civic pride and with a €5,000 prize fund to distribute this year, it created a very healthy and friendly rivalry.

COFFEE CUP PROJECT

Killarney became the first town in Ireland to introduce a plan to remove all takeaway coffee and tea cups to help eliminate over one million single-use containers from local waste disposal systems and to tackle the problem of littering in the national park. Other towns and cities have been closely monitoring the hugely successful initiative which was a really pioneering and exciting move by those spearheading the project.

MACROOM BYPASS

So many wonderful local projects were realised during 2023 that it was almost impossible to keep track of them all. The completion of the Macroom bypass has huge benefits for Killarney given that it significantly shortens the journey time to Cork – and, more importantly, from Cork – and it is a real advantage for local people working on Leeside and commuting each day. The new road makes Killarney and other parts of Kerry much more accessible for those who wish to enjoy all we have to offer.

COMMUNITY NURSING UNIT

It was heartening to see work commencing on the new 130-bed community nursing unit on the grounds of the former St Finan’s Hospital during 2023 and, in addition to providing top class facilities for the care of those that will need minding, it will also free up the historic St Columbanus and Killarney Community Hospital for other uses when the construction work is complete and the transfers take place in the coming months.

PRETTY POLLY SITE

Another major shot in the arm for Killarney was confirmation that the former Pretty Polly site, which has been derelict for years, is to be transformed into a state-of-the-art educational facility as we in Chamber look forward to that exciting project coming to fruition as it is just the kind of development the town needs. Great credit for all of the above must go to Kerry County Council and, more particularly, Killarney Municipal District Council who have been to the forefront of the various projects and without the foresight, determination and tenacity of Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin, the elected members and the officials, Killarney would struggle to get its fair share of what is being distributed from the national purse to help fund the various projects. For their great work, we thank and acknowledge all involved in the town hall and in county buildings.

O’Callaghan Coaches Christmas staff party with new Hall of Fame honouree Denis Lynch

50 years on the road for retired school bus driver Denis Lynch O’Callaghan Coaches made a special presentation to retired coach driver Denis Lynch at their Christmas staff party at Kate Kearney’s Cottage last Saturday night. Lena and Jimmy O’Callaghan, who were both school bus drivers, started their company in 1969 and it wasn’t long before their friend Denis joined them in the early 70s. It was only fitting that he was honoured as the first inductee to the company Hall of Fame alongside the founding members. Denis, from Beaufort, has now retired but was a very popular school bus driver in and around the Killarney area for many years. Denis was joined by his wife, Peggy, on Saturday night as Jimmy O’Callaghan was on hand to make the presentation of a beautiful slate clock, adorned with a special inscription. Philip O’Callaghan said : This recognition celebrates his dedicated service to the

company, an impressive commitment spanning five decades. "Over this extensive period, Denis played a pivotal role in laying the foundation and shaping key aspects of the company culture, including work ethic and customer service. "His consistent good-humoured approach with everyone working alongside him has significantly contributed to the way we all operate and engage with each other, still evident today. "Denis Lynch's lasting influence on the company is acknowledged as a key factor in the ongoing success that O'Callaghan Coaches enjoys, and this acknowledgment underscores his substantial and enduring impact, destined to remain with the company forever. Thank you Denis”

Blessing of new crib at St Mary’s Cathedral Continuing the wonderful tradition of St. Mary's Cathedral’s life-size Christmas Crib this week a new crib has just been installed in St. Mary's Cathedral. Inspired by Mrs Rena Kennelly, who cre-

ated the iconic Cathedral crib for over 50 years, Fr Kieran O'Brien commissioned the very talented Eamonn Mulvhill, to design and construct the new crib. The blessing of the new crib by Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne, took place last Saturday night.

Special Christmas Parade for residents of St Columbanus’s

Christmas in Killarney is about sharing the joy and spirit of Christmas with the whole community.

That’s why the team behind the Christmas in Killarney Festivals and Parades were delighted to deliver a very special Christmas parade to the residents of St Columbanus’s Community Hospital earlier this week and get them involved in the festivities.

A short video of the experience has been shared on the Killarney Advertiser's social media channels which we would greatly appreciate you re-sharing on your own social channels to spread the magic of Christmas in Killarney!

Crossing the road is no longer a mission at Killarney House The newly constructed pedestrian crossing on Mission Road become fully operation this week. Current town Mayor Brendan Cronin has pushed for a crossing linking the Beech Road Car Park and to the Mission Road entrance to Killarney House and Gardens. “This new crossing will finally provide

a designated safe location for pedestrians to cross the extremely busy Mission Road,” said Cronin. “I want to express my thanks to the Killarney Municipal District engineers John Ahern and Stephen Sheehan for getting this important project across the line and also to the contractor for completing the job in a timely fashion in difficult weather conditions.”

Kieran O'Brien celebrated a special mass for the whole school community, then the students under the direction of their Music Generation tutor Sorcha O'Connor performed a number of festive songs. A cake sale, with tea and coffee for all attendees and a monster Christmas raffle rounded off the day. A thoroughly fun and festive day was enjoyed by all. “The school is most grateful to all the families who supplied beautiful home

baking and to all the families and businesses from all around the town who donated wonderful prizes for the raffle,” said Principal Maria Breen. “I express my gratitude to all the supporters of the school who helped out in so many ways in the lead up to and on the day. All at Tiernaboul National School would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a bright and peaceful New Year.”

a healthy and successful new year. “We invite you to sign up, be brave and make that step for a healthy new year. “After taking those first few steps by signing up online and starting on January 9 you will be part of the team, with the same goal as yourself. “Mentoring, comradery and a gradual safe system to build you up in a team environment is guarantee.”

St Brigid's students Lauren Casey, Ellen McSweeney, Elizabeth O Shea and Jessica McCrohan contributed to the recent Storied Kerry Exhibition. The four girls, together with Anna Dunlea (who is missing from the photo) have done excellent work in their contribution to this exhibition, which was the subject of a recent programme on Radio Kerry. The exhibition is in Killarney House until February and from there will move on to another central location in Killarney.

Experience the Magic of Paudie and David a Ukrainian Christmas Clifford named joint Footballers of the Year at St. Mary's Church In what has been a huge year on and off the pitch for the Clifford family, it is only right that these brothers be recognised for the fantastic ambassadors they are for Kerry GAA. Coming off a dream run with Fossa GAA in early January when they claimed their first All-Ireland Club title and then straight back into the senior set up, there is certainly no lack of work ethic here. Of course, it would be remiss of us not to mention and remember with fondness their fabulous mother Ellen who passed away in May, but her love of GAA was passed on to all three of her children and every time they play, the heart and passion that they show speaks to her memory. For Paudie, known for his powerful running through the field, his ability to pinpoint the most accurate of passes and of course the sense that when he is on the ball, he is almost conducting the game – pointing to fellow players where to run and finding the smallest pockets of space, this year saw massive performances from him and earned him his third consecutive All Star Award. His passion and drive know no bounds and he is always there to encourage teammates and give momentum when it is most needed. Paudie rises when there are scores needed for Kerry and can kick off both feet, however, his fingerprints can be found on many of the team’s scores this year as he works the ball up the pitch and finds players with his passes. Off the pitch, Paudie is extremely humble and always willing to give his time to

fans both young and old and is a shining example for all young Gaelic Games players. We wish to congratulate Paudie on all that he has achieved this year and wish him every success in all his endeavours for 2024. David is another powerhouse of the GAA and produced heroic performances for Kerry this year. When David attacks it seems as though the football is just an extension of him, and he doesn’t need to break stride to solo or hop the ball as he bypasses defenders. From high fielding and almost uncatchable marks to top class finishes in the back of the net, David’s skillset knows no bounds. Scoring huge points from outside the ’45 metre line to managing to squeeze kicks over the black spot through numerous defenders, the most striking thing about David is his selflessness and how for him it’s always about the team. David will rise when Kerry need him to, but he will also win ball and pass it off to teammates in better scoring positions. This year being named as PWC/GPA Footballer of the Year for the second year in a row really validates the ability of this young man. His skill can only be matched by his humility and David is always willing to give his time and attention to fans and to be the amazing ambassador that he is for Kerry GAA.

Embrace the enchanting traditions of Ukrainian Christmas on December 23 at 6 p.m., as the Ukrainian community extends a warm invitation to St. Mary's Church for a spectacular Christmas concert. Anna Nikulcha, the event's passionate organizer, expresses her joy in fostering the celebration of Ukrainian Christmas in Killarney. Following the success of last year's festive concert, the community is thrilled to continue this cherished tradition. Father Simon from the Church of St. Mary graciously opens the doors to his premises, welcoming all those eager to join. "We're delighted to see everyone who shares the spirit of celebration," says Anna. As a member of the renowned "Ukrainian Code" choir, Anna ensures that attendees will be treated to the distinctive voices of this remarkable choir, known for their dynamic performances across Killarney and throughout Ireland. The concert's diverse program features the lively sounds of the ’Chervona Kalin’ group from Waterville. Adding to the excitement, the Killarney Children's Choir will make their debut appearance, and a dance team led by Alina Maslak will grace the stage. This vibrant dance

group is a traditional participant in both the Killarney Christmas Parade and the 4th of July Independence Day Parade. “We extend a warm invitation to everyone to join us for this joyous occasion. Admission is free, ensuring that the spirit of Ukrainian Christmas is shared with the entire community. Don't miss this festive celebration at St. Mary's Church, where the rich cultural tapestry of Ukrainian Christmas comes alive,” added Anna.

A Christmas Message from Bishop Ray Browne Christmas is a season of encouragement and hope. God, Creator and Lord of all creation, truly loves his creation. In Jesus God choose to be with us and to care for us, and to give hope to the whole human family. Christmas is a time to count our blessings and rejoice. I call to mind and give thanks for all that is good in all the communities and parishes of our diocese. Thank you to our clergy and religious and all in our parishes. Thank you to all our school communities. Thank you to all the voluntary groups: in sport, in the arts and in social care. There are so many wonderful things happening everywhere. Through local media, radio, print and online reporting, again and again we realise the wonderful

number of voluntary bodies present in our communities. Long may it continue. Sincere thanks to all the volunteers involved. “Mary treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart” is a key sentence in the Gospel. It refers to Mary’s reaction to all the significant moments in Jesus’ life. Through the days of Christmas let us treasure and ponder the birth of Jesus, the new-born child in the manger. He is God, God who loves us, and God who has come to be with us always. This year the cathedral crib in Killarney has brand-new scenery replacing the wooden stable that had come to the end of its lifespan. The ‘freshness of the new’ has caused many to see new aspects of that night in Bethlehem. May children especially love our new crib. The crib scene has many people: shepherds, kings, a woman at the village well, and of course Mary and Joseph. How deep was the faith of each that first Christmas night? How did they understand the excitement at the birth of Jesus? Did they live to hear him preach when he began his public ministry? We, the people who will stand and gaze at the new cathe-

dral crib, what of our faith, - our faith in Jesus Christ who is ‘with us always’? Each year the crib scene speaks to what is happening in the world around us. The prophet Isaiah spoke of a ‘Son being born for us’ who would be ‘Mighty God and Prince of Peace’. Every day of Christmas let us each pray to Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, to bring peace where there is war, - the Ukraine, Israel-Palestine, Sudan and sadly so many other places. Far from home for the census, Jesus was born to Mary and Joseph in a stable. He was born without any of the facilities of home, not even neighbours to help out! If that simplicity and poverty was the lot of the Holy Family as Jesus entered the world, surely we, his disciples, ought to have a simple Christmas, the basics with no excess or extravagance? All his life Jesus lived for others, again and again he reached out to help and share with people in need. I firmly believe that what we give to the various charities who seek funds at Christmas time is money well spent. Give to charities, especially to Saint Vincent de Paul who do so much good work throughout the diocese. There are so many among us who

through some misfortune or other find themselves in need this Christmas. Let us open our hearts to them, ‘In giving we receive’. The Holy Family on Christmas night was far from home and without a bed. Then, out of fear of King Herod, they fled to Egypt where they remained until Herod died. The situation is not that different for the refugees and migrants and the Ukrainians fleeing war who are with us in Ireland this Christmas. As a people, as individuals, let us welcome them, and let us do what we can to support them. Put the crib scene, the birth of Jesus, at the centre of your Christmas. Let it remind you of how God ‘so loves the world’, and that all of us have so much to be grateful for. May God’s goodness to us inspire our goodness to others. Le gach dea-ghuí, í gcomhair na Nollag. Every Christmas blessing on all in our communities. Give Christ joyful welcome, love him and revere; cherish one another with a love sincere. Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for the whole world.

Kilcummin Children make generous donation to St. Vincent de Paul

Christmas cheer at O’Donoghue Ring Collection festive party The O’Donoghue Ring Collection hosted its annual ‘Family Festive Party’ last week at the Killarney Plaza Hotel and Spa. The ‘Family Festive Party’ is a way to express heartfelt gratitude and show appreciation for the continued passion, commitment and dedication the team has shown, all throughout the year. Staff members and their little ones enjoyed a few hours of sparkle, joy and

Preparations for Christmas are well underway in Kilcummin with the Christmas decorations up, the letters have been sent to Santa and the children are so excited counting the sleeps to the big night. But the school community of Kilcummin National School and Playschool have also been busy helping families give the wonder of Christmas by donating food for their annual St. Vincent de Paul food appeal.

Mr. Paddy O'Sullivan, a representative from St. Vincent de Paul and a former teacher in Kilcummin National School visited the school. He accepted the generous contribution of seven hampers to the appeal from the Student Council and Miss Charlene O'Connor. Mrs. Marie Condon, organiser and teacher in Kilcummin National School commended the children and their families on their kindness and compassion at this special time of the year.

magic, which included festive refreshments, an interactive disco and a dressup photobooth to capture the moments of cheer. Over 100 children also had the opportunity to meet with Santa and received a little goodie bag from him

Art contest celebrates 800 years of the very first Christmas crib The 800th anniversary of the first Christmas Crib was celebrated at the Friary this week. The original crib was created by St Francis of Assisi, and the Franciscan Community in Killarney organised an art competition to celebrate the occasion.

The art competition was open to mainly sixth class primary school children from all the primary schools in Killarney and surrounding areas. In total 226 children entered the competition and awards were presented to 34 winners.

Killarney hoteliers visit European Parliament Seán Kelly MEP for Ireland South hosted a delegation from the Irish Hotels Federation at the European Parliament, Brussels recently. IHF representatives from Kerry, Cork, Limerick, Mayo, Donegal, Meath, and Dublin were present. The group had the opportunity to tour the European Parliament plenary chamber and to meet with Parliament and Commission officials to discuss the devel-

opment of EU tourism policy. They also discussed how politics and policy-making operates in the European Parliament with MEP Kelly. “Turnout in Ireland for the last European Parliament election [2019], was below 50 percent” said the Killarney politician.

“I really value the opportunity to welcome Irish people to the Parliament in Brussels, I hope these visits give the groups the chance to engage with the EU and inform themselves ahead of the 2024 elections. Irish people’s voices should be heard loud and clear in Brussels.” During their visit, the group also saw the historical cities of Bruges and Leuven in Belgium. Bernadette Randles, Managing Director of Dromhall Hotel, and one of the co-or-

ganisers of the visit said: "I am sure all Irish MEPs work very hard, but I must say for us in Kerry, and indeed in the IHF nationally, it is great to have the support and the ear of Seán Kelly. Seán is really interested in tourism and sustainability and continually lends us his time and wisdom whenever we ask. A huge thank you especially to Sean and the team in his office. I would recommend anyone take that trip with Sean to see the European Parliament.”

Prizes galore as squash club celebrates end of year

Rounding off a superb year for the Gleneagle Squash Club, members gathered for the finals of the annual Club Championships, once again generously sponsored by Kerry Airport. There was a great turnout from members and supporters, with great Squash played across all Divisions, and the club wish to thank Eoin Horan, Lisa O’Brien, Dieter Gosch and all the staff in the Gleneagle Aquila Club for everything during the year. The club also wish to thank John Mulhern of Kerry Airport for his continued support of the annual Club Championship. The Ladies’ Division returned to the club this year, with Nicky Simonds-Gooding and Paula McElligott meeting for a great battle. Nicky took the first game but it was a very close affair. Paula had the upper edge in the second but Nicky’s determination saw out another win. The next game was another close battle but Nicky came out the winner. Ladies Squash has grown this year with a big thanks to Joanne McCarthy and the ladies' coaches. Joanne, Paula, Nicky and Bernice Enright have brought on the ladies' Squash no end this year. Final Score: 3-1. Men’s Div 4 saw Connie Counihan and Pat Twohig battle out a cracking game.

Connie has come through the ranks as a junior and is now playing well in the seniors. Pat has been with the club for a few years and deserved this final spot. A great game ensued but Connie’s energy got him the win on the night. Final Score: 3-1 Men’s Division 3 saw the Aquila Club’s Eoin Horan pit against Michael Horgan. Another cracking game. Eoin, who had a bit more experience, was the favourite but Michael’s fitness and power game saw him come out victorious. Final Score: 3-0. Men’s Division 2 was another massive battle. Brendan Counihan vs James Cahill. Brendan who is the club Junior Coach (along with Keith Cronin) and James Cahill (a Tipperary man who has all the tactics of an ex-hurler). Both are well-deserved finalists. Brendan took the early lead but didn't have it all his own way in the first. James battled hard in the second and pulled one back. Brendan then got his second wind and took the next two but didn't have it easy in both. Brendan has always wanted to win Division2 and has now conquered his goal.

Aidan O’Mahony Triumphs in “Try For CRY” Challenge Aidan O’Mahony, the Cardiac Risk in The Young Ireland Ambassador and retired Kerry GAA player, has completed the 200k he set out to complete for the charity. He has surpassed his goal of raising €2K along with it. The outpouring of support has translated into a remarkable achievement, with the total funds raised now standing at an impressive €3,200. O’Mahony and friend Eoin O’Shea set out on their unique fundraising initiative, ‘Try for CRY’ at the beginning of November, by completing a leg of the Camino distance (200k), and donating all proceeds raised to CRY Ireland. Aidan and Eoin completed their final 5k of the challenge in the popular Tralee Town Park this Thursday 14th December. This challenge was set out to be achieved from any location around Ire-

land from November 1 to December 14, with the primary goal of the “Try for CRY” initiative being inclusiveness, to inspire individuals to step out, whether in their living rooms, gardens, or local parks, and complete a distance equivalent to a Camino leg, all while contributing to CRY Irelands crucial cause. O’Mahony said: “The ‘Try for CRY’ was about challenging ourselves, coming together for a good cause, and generating crucial funds for CRY Ireland during this festive season. Given the absence of the Camino for CRY this year, we embarked on this challenge to ensure that we could still make a meaningful contribution to CRY.

Aidan O'Mahony and Eoin O'Shea conquer the final 5k of their extraordinary 200k in Tralee Town Park as part of the 'Try for CRY' challenge, surpassing their €2K fundraising goal for CRY Ireland. A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Dear Killarney Advertiser Readers

I'm writing to you today from my cosy workshop in the North Pole, where I'm busy preparing for my big night on Christmas Eve. I'm so excited to deliver presents to all the good boys and girls in Killarney, and I can't wait to see the smiles on your faces when you open them. I've been working hard all year long, making toys and filling my sleigh with presents. I've even been practicing my reindeer driving skills so I can nav-

igate the snowy mountains of Killarney without any trouble. I know you've been working hard too, so I'm really looking forward to rewarding you for all your good deeds. Whether you've been helping your parents, being kind to your friends, or simply being yourself, I'm proud of everything you've done in 2023. On Christmas Eve, I'll be hopping on my sleigh with my trusty reindeer and flying all over the world, delivering presents to all the deserving chil-

dren. I'll be sure to stop by Killarney and leave a special present for you under your Christmas tree. So, be sure to go to bed early on Christmas Eve, and leave out a glass of milk and a plate of cookies for me and my reindeer. And most importantly, don't forget to leave out carrots for Donner and Blitzen!

Merry Christmas,

- Santa

Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula Erupts Once Again Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, a region renowned for its volcanic activity, witnessed yet another eruption on Tuesday December 19. This latest episode of volcanic unrest follows a string of eruptions in the area since 2021, with the most recent one occurring in August of that year. The eruption began with a series of earthquakes, indicating the movement of magma beneath the surface. The lava flow emerged from a fissure in the ground, producing a mesmerizing spectacle of molten stone cascading down

the hillside. The eruption, while generating excitement among volcanologists and geologists, posed no immediate threat to human life or property. The lava flow was confined to a remote area, far from populated centres but authorities issued warnings about potential gas emissions and the need to exercise caution when venturing near the eruption site. Iceland, with its location on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, is a hotspot for volcanic activity. The country experiences an average of one eruption every five years, and the Reykjanes Peninsula is particularly active due to its proximity to the ridge.

Government taking UK to court over NI Legacy Bill The Irish Government has decid decided to initiate an inter-state case against the UK under the European Convention of Human Rights, Tá Tánaiste Micheál Martin confirmed this week.

Winter Solace at Newgrange: A Spectacle of Light and Time Nestled in the heart of Boyne Valley, the ancient monument of Newgrange stands as a testament to human ingenuity. Each year, on the morning of the winter solstice, a remarkable phenomenon unfolds at Newgrange, drawing in pilgrims and curious visitors and Thursday morning just gone at 8.41am, it was no different. As the sun began its ascent, its first rays pierced through a specially designed opening above the entrance, illuminating the passage and eventually bathing the central chamber in a warm, golden glow.

For a brief 17 minutes, the chamber was filled with a light, a symbolic representation of the reawakening of the sun and the promise of new beginnings. This remarkable alignment, carefully calculated by the ancient builders, marks a pivotal moment in the natural cycle. The winter solstice signifies the shortest day and the longest night of the year, a time when darkness reigns supreme, yet, as the sun's first rays penetrate the darkness of Newgrange's chamber, they dispel the gloom, signalling the imminent return of light and life.

In a statement, Mr Martin said "I regret that we find ourselves in a position where such a choice had to be made". Mr Martin said the "decision by the Brit British government not to proceed with the 2014 Stormont House Agreement and instead pursue legislation unilaterally, without effective engagement with the legitimate concerns that we, and many others, raised left us with few options. "The British government removed the political option, and has left us only this legal avenue." The Tánaiste added: "The incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights into Northern Ireland law is a spe specific and fundamental requirement of the Good Friday Agreement. Since the UK legislation was first tabled, the Gov Government have been consistent that it is not compatible with the Convention. "I used every opportunity to make my concerns known, and urged the British government to pause this legislation."

the Vatican has announced that it will now be giving blessings to same-sex couples. This decision comes after years of debate and deliberation within the Catholic Church, and it is expected to be met with both praise and criticism from Catholics around the world.

Killarney’s PNJ playing at Tralee Fundraiser This Saturday Tralee City Productions will present ‘Greyhound Live’, a Non-Profit evening event of live music for this year's chosen charity, Multiple Sclerosis Ireland. All proceeds, post-operating costs, will be channelled towards supporting various charitable endeavours as the group is committed to making a positive impact. Greyhound Live successfully raised over €1300 for Pieta House at last year's event

and this year, the event promises to be even more extraordinary, featuring a diverse lineup of local talents. Acts such as PNJ from Killarney, the dynamic E-Train, The Low Field and more are set to grace the stage, ensuring a night filled with captivating performances. Don’t miss an evening of great entertainment on 23 December 7PM in the The Greyhound Bar Tralee. Tickets are available on eventbrite for just €10. To find out more visit their Instagram page @greyhoundlivetralee.

"God loves all of his Chrildren" Pope on blessing LGBTQ+ couples Pope Francis, who has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, has said that he believes that all couples deserve to be blessed by the Church, regardless of their sexual orientation. "God loves all of his children," he said in a statement, "and we should all be able to

celebrate our love in the Church." The decision to bless same-sex couples is a significant step forward for the Catholic Church, which has traditionally been opposed to same-sex marriage and other forms of LGBTQ+ relationships. It may also be a sign of the changing attitudes within the Church.

Lucky 13 for Leary and Crokes EAST KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL _________________________________________________________________________________

Dr Crokes

0-12 | Killarney Legion 1-8

FITZGERALD STADIUM Kieran O’Leary, who was seeking a record-breaking 13th O’Donoghue Cup medal, got the biggest cheer of the day when he entered the fray early in the second half of this East Kerry final. He promptly curled over a beautiful point, and there was just a single point in it at the end as Dr Crokes claimed the title. Too often dreams such as Kieran’s don’t merge into reality, and it looked that way on Sunday last as the unfancied Legion held sway, clinging tenaciously to a deserved single-point lead. However, Crokes refused to panic. They drew level with a mighty Mark O’Shea 45 and Tony Brosnan secured the trophy with a late winner. Legion will be disappointed with this narrow loss as they forged the pace until the dying minutes. It was an absorbing

O'Donoghue Cup final for the small attendance - small because the final was just one week short of Christmas and also there was no rural team in the mix. The game was full of errors, even making allowances for the time of the year. The strong wind blowing down directly into the Lewis Road end favoured Legion in the first half and they took the initiative by scoring two fine opening points via Ryan O’Grady. The Crokes backs did well to repel the efforts of James O’Donoghue and co. but Legion were on top at midfield with Pádraig Lucey, in particular, the main provider. Even when Crokes drew level at four points each, their play was sloppy. Give due credit to the Legion defence. They played as a unit, all seven thwarting Crokes’ best efforts to get into the game.

Scoring forwards win matches. A crucial factor in determining the result of the match was that Legion had only three scorers: Finbarr Murphy (1-3), O’Grady (0-3) and Eoghan O’Sullivan (0-2). In comparison, Crokes had six: Tony Brosnan, Micheál Burns, Mark O’Shea, David Shaw, Cian McMahon and Kieran O’Leary. Credit the Crokes defence for a fine display where three of the starting backs, John Payne, Fionn Fitzgerald and Brian Looney, with a combined age of 105, played superbly. Crokes manager Brian McMahon made three crucial substitutions in that second half, two oldies and a young man in his prime returning after a long injury. The introduction of Kieran O’Leary (36th minute) and the double substitution in the 50th minute of Daithí Casey and Michael Potts reaped rich dividends. All contributed greatly and used possession wisely, especially as Legion battled bravely to hold on for victory or at least a draw, which they deserved after such

a spirited display in putting it up to the holders. This is the last issue of 2023. Sport has the power to change the world and compensate for so much of the bad news bombarding us every day. It has the power to inspire and it has the power to unite people in a way that nothing else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand creating hope, and hope springs eternal. It is always welcome and needed by everyone, especially the young people. The Killarney Advertiser has been around since March 1973. The over-arching vision and philosophy of Danny Casey and the indefatigable energies of the Casey family ensured that Killarney would have its own Friday read and that it would be free. He said he knew little about sport but he realised that sport is central to the lives of so many people. Thus was born the concept of this sports section, and that ball has been in play since ‘73. TEAM: Killarney Legion players stand for the national anthem before the O'Donoghue Cup final. Photo: East Kerry GAA.

Hard defeat for Legion but they died with their boots on | By Adam Moynihan There should be no football at this time of year, really. The split season was supposed to tidy up the GAA calendar and it has to an extent, but it hasn’t solved the riddle of how to end the campaign with time to spare before the next campaign begins. It’s not fair on amateur club players to be training all year round and to then be playing important matches in apocalyptic conditions in the depths of winter. In fairness to Legion and Crokes, they provided great entertainment at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last, despite the awful weather. Peter Keane’s Legion weren’t expected to win but they gave a very good account of themselves with many players delivering excellent performances. In attack, Ryan O’Grady kicked some lovely points and Eoghan O’Sullivan was influential, especially in the second half. Midfielders Jamie Alade and Pádraig Lucey also battled hard, but it was in defence where the underdogs really excelled. The likes of Cian Gammell, Danny Sheahan and Peter O’Sullivan were scrapping for every ball and making life difficult for Crokes’ forwards; the defending champions only managed to kick four points in the entirety of the first half.

CAPTAINS: Legion captain Darragh O'Doherty, referee Pádraig O'Sullivan and Crokes captain Gavin O'Shea before the 2023 O'Donoghue Cup final at Fitzgerald Stadium. Photo: East Kerry GAA.

The strong wind blowing into Crokes’ faces and down towards the Lewis Road End was naturally an important factor too, and you wonder will Legion have one or two regrets about their tactics when they had the wind at their backs. Yes, they kept Crokes’ score down and, yes, they led 1-5 to 0-4 at the break, but that goal by Finbarr Murphy is a bit of an anomaly as it came so fortuitously right at the end of the half. Before that, when they were only leading by one or two points, they were conceding the Crokes kickout and retreating back into their own half of the field.

Their aim was to make it as hard as possible for Crokes to break them down but at times it felt like Brian McMahon was happy for his players to hold the ball in non-threatening areas and effectively run down the clock. I’m sure they felt that going into the second period facing a one or two-point deficit, wind-assisted, would have been very manageable, so in those terms you could argue that Legion played into their hands. It’s very easy to say it in hindsight but maybe they could have went after Shane Murphy’s kickouts a little more aggressively. As it turned out, a lead of one or two

points wouldn’t have been enough, because four points wasn’t enough either. Crokes scored eight with the wind as Legion registered three against it. As well as Legion’s defenders were playing, you always felt that Crokes would eventually go on a mini-run and, in the end, points by substitute Kieran O’Leary, Mark O’Shea (an inspirational 45), and Tony Brosnan won the day. With the win, Leary secured his 13th O’Donoghue Cup medal. He now has more than any other player in the storied history of this great competition. I grew up with Kieran and Brian Looney and John Payne (and Mike Moloney, who is no longer togging out). I played soccer with them for Killarney Athletic and I played football with them in the Sem. If you told me then that they would end up with 11 or 12 or 13 O’Donoghue Cups and I would end up with none, I probably would have said, ‘yeah, that sounds about right’. They are just incredible sportsmen and as much as I wish it was my Legion clubmates who were celebrating the last day, you have to give them credit where it’s due. As for Legion, it was another hard defeat but you couldn’t fault them for effort or application. They turned up and performed, in spite of the conditions and in spite of the opposition, and they died with their boots on. As a supporter, you can’t ask for much more than that.

Rovers overcome Lakers challenge in Dublin Scotts Lakers just came up short against Moy Tolk Rovers in Dublin last weekend but having picked up six wins in nine games so far, Brian Clarke’s side are well poised to make their mark over Christmas and into the New Year. The Lakers lost by eight against Rovers (92-84), despite the best efforts of star American Braden Bell who contributed 36 points. Paul Clarke (12 points), Terion Moss (11), Jack O’Sullivan (10), Eoin Carroll (10), Mark Sheehan (3) and Jamie O’Sullivan (2) also found the target for the visitors on the night. The Killarney side led until the third quarSHOOTER: Braden Bell scored 36 points for the Lakers in their defeat to Moy Tolka Rovers. Photo: Pat Shanahan Photography.

ter before Rovers edged out in front (6358) thanks to buckets by Davis, Howe and Faapito. The Lakers showed good determination to stay in contention, however, and when Jack O’Sullivan beat the shot clock with seven minutes left in the fourth, he put his team three points clear (74-77). With White and Davis to the fore, Tolka ran into an 84-80 lead with 3:35 on the clock. Moss and Jack O’Sullivan tried peg them back but the hosts held firm and prevailed on a scoreline of 92-84. The Lakers are back in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday, December 30 when the Drogheda Wolves make the journey south.

Kerry FC pay Christmas visit to children's ward Players and officials from Kerry FC visited the paediatric ward at University Hospital Kerry on Wednesday to spread some Christmas cheer ahead of the festive season. First team players Seán McGrath, Ronan Teahan, Samuel Aladesanusi, Seán O'Connell and Graham O’Reilly, Sporting Director Billy Dennehy, First Team Coach James Sugrue and Media Officer Ivan Hurley were all on hand to greet the children and hand out gifts. In what was a special and memorable occasion, the club's staff took time out of the pre-season schedule to make the

trip to the Tralee hospital. Speaking after the visit, Kerry FC Media Officer Ivan Hurley said: "It would take you back a step or two when you walk into the children's ward and meet the boys and girls as well as their parents within the hospital environment. We heard multiple stories from parents who are trying to keep their spirits high despite the situations they find themselves in so close to Christmas. “We hope that the chance to meet the players first-hand today will give children some added magic when they need it most this Christmas.”

SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic

Killarney Legion GAA

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN: I would like to extend warm Christmas wishes to everyone on behalf of Killarney Athletic AFC. A big thank you to our dedicated staff maintaining our Woodlawn grounds, our coaches and their families, our committee and their families, and our generous sponsors whose support makes running the club possible. Appreciation also goes out to our trustees, non-playing club members, supporters, and, of course, our players from the Academy to the senior teams. This year, we celebrated the successful return of our annual 7-a-side event, led by Colette Casey. As we reflect on the past year, our thoughts are with the club members and the broader soccer community we've lost. Here's to a joyful Christmas and an even brighter 2024. Best regards, Donie Murphy. We bleed blue, Nollaig Shona Daoibh go Léir. DECEMBER 300 CLUB DRAW: €500 Assumpta O’Donoghue Park Road. €100 Sean O’Donoghue Beaufort. Robbie McCormick Pairc Chuimin Kilcummin. Elaine O’Shea Dublin. Simon Evans Woodlawn. Donal O’Neill Glenbeigh. U17 PREMIER LEAGUE: Killarney Athletic 2-0 Mastergeeha. James Dempsey Jake Nash. Best for Athletic were Brian O’Shea, Brian O’Connor & Mark O’Carroll. U12B: Inter Kenmare 1 Killarney Athletic 1. We made the trip to Kenmare for this U12B fixture today. After an even start Kenmare made the breakthrough to edge things in the first quarter. The blues began to get to grips with the surface and equalised after a well worked team goal. Half Time 1-1. The second half was much the same, with both teams coming close on occasions. Full time 1-1. U14 GIRLS: Killarney Athletic 1-1 Camp. Lillian Slattery.

O’DONOGHUE CUP FINAL: Our Senior Men fell agonisingly short in last Sunday's O'Donoghue Cup Final against our neighbours Dr Crokes. Played in damp and breezy conditions we made a good start with Ryan O'Grady and Finbarr Murphy particularly accurate, helping us in a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after 15 minutes. The Crokes replied with the next three scores spread over a ten-minute period to draw level. Ryan O'Grady was again on target as the half time break drew closer. A free taken by Finbarr Murphy somehow eluded the Crokes defence and ended in the net to give us a 1-5 to 0-4 halftime advantage. With the conditions in their favour the Crokes made a strong start to the second half, but a Finbarr Murphy point made it 1-6 to 0-7. Eoghan O’Sullivan twice responded to further Crokes points, and the score was 1-8 to 0-9 heading into the final furlong. Unfortunately the Crokes finished the stronger, hitting the final three points to carry the day. Final Score Killarney Legion 1-8 Dr Crokes 0-12. WILLIAM SHINE: Congrats to William Shine who has been named as the U20 Munster Player of the Year for 2023, recognition for his 10 points haul against Clare and his Man of the Match performance against Cork in the Munster Final. JP MCMANUS: A big thank you to JP McManus for his incredibly generous gesture of donating 1 million euro to every County Board in Ireland. This is of course one condition, that its divided equally amongst every GAA, LGFA and Camogie club in that county. In short it amounts to just over 10,000 Euro for every club in the county. Dr Crokes GAA EK O'DONOGHUE CUP FINAL: Dr. Crokes 0:12 Legion 1:08. On Sunday last Kieran O’Leary made history as he became the record holder of 13 O’Donoghue Cup medals as we won our 33rd

East Kerry Championship. The game had everything a local derby should have, and it was only 1 point in the end that separated the sides. Legion aided with a strong wind in the first half started the stronger, scoring the first two points of the game before David Shaw opened our scoring in the 6th minute. Gavin White came close to raising the green glass minutes later when Brian Kelly was forced to react fast and send the ball out for a 45. Points from David Shaw, Cian McMahon and Micheal Burns meant that it was a one-point game going into half time. Just before the short whistle was blown Legion were awarded a free close to the sideline. With a strong wind blowing the free dropped short and slipped into the back of net. We went in training 0:04 to 1:05 at half time. Our never die attitude shone through in the second half as the boys refused to lie down. Two of six Tony Brosnan points opened up the scoring in the second half. We levelled matters in the 25th minute of the half when Mark O’Shea stepped up to kick a fantastic 45. Keeping cool and composed, with 2 minutes left on the closed Tony Brosnan won, and converted a free to give us the lead for the first time in the game. We held possession for the closing minutes of the game and ran out one-point winners in the end to claim our last bit of silverware of the year. RACE NIGHT 2023: A video race night will be held in Griffins Bar & Restaurant Castlemaine on Friday, December 29th. Finger food will be served and tote betting will be available on the night. The club is seeking sponsors for the individual races as well as owners for the horses. This is always a great post-festive season night out so we look forward to as many members from our community joining us again this year. It is the end of another successful year for our club, both on and off the field. However, we need your support to continue to provide excellent facilities to our members, especially our children. Running costs exceed €50k per annum, which we need to fund within our club, as no funding comes from the County Board or Croke Park. Membership is part of our income but the other main source, like a lot of clubs, is our Club Lotto. This year to promote the lotto again, we have a promotion in conjunction with our race night. Our aim is to have all families who enjoy the club facilities to have a lotto ticket. We urge all members to please support this fundraiser and help keep our club going in the right direction. We have 30+ volunteers calling to their lists of people but it will be impossible to call to all. A great social night is guaranteed at our Race Night with fantastic prizes on 29th December in Griffins Bar, Castlemaine. We hope to

St Mary’s Basketball BLITZ: The annual St Mary’s Christmas Basketball blitz bounces back into action on St Stephen’s Day for five days of thumping basketball action. This will be the 52nd year that the blitz is being run over the Christmas period. As ever, the maestro behind the competition will be the great Donal O’Connor and he will be ably assisted by his hard-working committee, and the man affectionately known as the Duke promises plenty of thrills and spills once more. “Once again we’ll have twenty-two different competitions over the five days, and after our two years away we are really looking forward to the tip off at 8am on Tuesday morning when St Mary’s Red and St Bridget’s do battle at U/14 boys level”, said the Duke. In total there will be 175 games played over the five days incorporating 22 competitions – 12 underage and 10 adult. A massive total of 120 teams will feature with 1450 players strutting their basketball skills. Castleisland Community Centre will play host to 117 of these games and they will tip off at 10 am each morning whilst St John’s Hall will host 58 juvenile games with an 8 am start to the action. As one can imagine this amount of basketball games over a short period of time is a fair undertaking and Duke said that it is down to his hard-working committee that makes it all possible “It’s a huge effort really”, he said. “But for everyone helping out, referees, timekeepers, the people that work in the shop, the lads that collect the tickets, it just wouldn’t run as smoothly as it usually does. We are very grateful to the volunteers that make the Blitz what it is”. Once again the blue ribbon event of the blitz will be the Premier Men competition which tips off on the Thursday 28th when locals and defending champions Flexachem KCYMS and Killarney Scott Lakers battle it out at 11.05am. Straight afterwards Tralee Warriors make a very welcome return to the blitz when they take on Limerick Celtics .The Premier men action continues throughout Thursday with Limerick Sport Eagles taking on Flexachem KCYMS at 1.25pm and Limerick Celtics battling it out with Killarney Scott Lakers at 2.05pm.
