DECEMBER 2024

Merry Christmas!

Time to take stock and reflect after a busy year

As the year draws to a close and Christmas is upon us, it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and celebrate the milestones we’ve achieved.

This year has been filled with stories that have informed, inspired, and connected our community. From covering the many fantastic events to highlighting the incredible achievements of so many local heroes, it’s been a privilege for me, and indeed all of the Killarney Advertiser team, to bring you the local news that matters most. In the spirit of the season here are some of my highlights from this year. In May, the illustrious Michelle Cooper Galvin was rightly honoured with a Civic Reception for her outstanding contributions to photojournalism.

In a news story that kind of went under the radar, Marie O’Carroll stepped down after 14 years of tireless and inspiring fundraising for Nathan’s Walk in aid of Pieta House. Her dedication to the charity will be nearly impossible to replace but Marie can be very proud of all she achieved.

There was some great photos sent in to us throughout the year. One of local legend Sham Courtney marking his 79th birthday, surrounded by friends at his favourite local, Jack C’s. And there was another great shot sent into us marking the retirement of seven local postmen (if your Christmas gifts are arriving late this year, blame those young replacements!)

The end of the year was a vibrant period for Killarney’s business scene, marked by the arrival of exciting new ventures like Rituals and the beautifully revamped shop by Quill’s Jewellery, which has significantly enhanced the Market Cross. Despite the challenges faced by many small businesses, it was heartening to celebrate two business milestones: Macbee’s commemorated 40 years in business, while The Dungeon proudly marked its 50th anniversary.

The L’Étape Ireland cycling event, or-

ganised by Kerry’s own Elite Events, showcased our town’s potential as a world class event destination and possibly a future Tour de France stage. Speaking of world-class, the Killarney Historic Rally welcomed two-time world rally champion Kalle Rovanperä to town a few weeks ago. He had many nice things to say about Killarney. Closer to home, the annual Christmas in Killarney celebrations, organised by The Chamber, brought their usual magic, from the Christmas Markets and Ice Rink to the Magic Parades and Dine in Killarney. The Shopping Festival at Halloween was another standout success story, and one the Killarney Advertiser were delighted to get behind in support of small businesses. I hear its success is sparking plans for an even bigger event in 2025. The year 2024 will go down as the year we survived not one but two elections. Despite our collective grumbling about local and national issues, it seems most people are content with the status quo. There were, of course, many low points in 2024. We lost former councillor and mayor Donal O’Grady, the entrepreneurial Kay Randles, and the untimely passings of Caoimhín “Shaq” O’Donoghue and Phil O’Sullivan. Their losses have left profound voids in our community. Our thoughts are with their families and the many others locally who are facing into their first Christmas without a loved one. Finally, from all of us at the Killarney Advertiser, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you, our loyal readers. Thank you for always taking the time to read our stories and for sharing your perspectives.

Here’s to a brighter, better, and bolder 2025. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Susie Shines in Christmas Colouring Competition

A huge thank you to all the schools and students who participated in our annual Christmas Colouring Competition.

This year, we were delighted to receive over 500 creative entries, showcasing the incredible talent of young artists in our community.

Choosing a single winner was no easy task, but after much deliberation, we are thrilled to announce Susie Dineen (aged 12) from 6th class at Barraduff National School as the winner.

Susie's winning artwork takes pride of place on the front cover of our Christmas Bumper Edition magazine. Along with the honour of having her masterpiece featured, Susie also received a goodie bag filled with art supplies to encourage her to continue developing her artistic skills.

Her beautiful drawing captured a quintessential Irish Christmas living room scene, complete with a glowing open fire, a decorated Christmas tree, Santa Claus, a snow globe, and intricate details such as the Killarney Advertiser magazine. Susie's thoughtful use of colour brought the scene to life, evoking warmth, and the comforts of home during the festive season.

When asked about her creative process, Susie revealed that she initially drew a gingerbread man but decided to start over after carefully re-reading the competition guidelines. "I noticed we were asked to leave as little white space as pos-

sible, so I made sure to add lots of colours to my new picture," she shared. Adding a personal touch to her artwork, Susie included initials on the stockings hanging by the fireplace to represent her close school friends, Kaitlin, Shauna, and Aimee.

Beyond her artistic talents, Susie is sport mad with a love for swimming and GAA. She plays in the forwards for Glenflesk U12s and hopes to receive a Kerry jersey from Santa this year. When asked about her favourite players, “David Clifford and Shane Ryan”.

Susie is also looking forward to celebrating Christmas with her family, including her sisters Lucy and Emma. The family will spend part of the holiday visiting her grandmother in Cahersiveen. As Susie is half Polish, her household embraces both Irish and Polish Christmas traditions. "On Christmas Eve, we always have a nice fish dinner and lots of traditional Polish cakes," she explained. This year will be particularly special, as her family will travel to Poland in time to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

The competition was incredibly competitive this year, and the standard of entries was exceptional. As a result, we selected several runners-up whose fantastic work is featured on page 24, be sure to check them out.

WINNER: Susie Dineen (aged 12) in 6th class at Barraduff National School

Killarney was shrouded in sadness this week as the community gathered to mourn the passing of Dermot O’Callaghan Jr.

Beyond the hospitality industry, Dermot was a passionate supporter of local sports, particularly Dr Crokes GAA Club and Killarney Celtic Football Club. His enthusiasm for these teams were evident in his regular attendance at matches and his active involvement in club activities.

The O’Callaghan family has a long-standing legacy of public service, with Dermot’s father the late Dermot Sr and brother Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan both serving as prominent figures in local politics.

The news of Dermot’s passing was met with shock and grief throughout the community.

Friends and family gathered to pay their respects at his funeral Mass, where heartfelt tributes were shared about his kind nature, infectious laughter, and love for life.

FAREWELL

At the funeral Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral on Tuesday morning Fr Mark Moriarty paid tribute to Dermot.

“Two words kept ringing through in all the kind messages: that of a kind man and a gentleman. Sometimes we see mission as this big understanding, when our primary mission is love. Dermot's primary mission was love,” Fr Moriarty told the congregation.

Dermot’s son, Colm, delivered a poignant eulogy, reflecting on his father's life and legacy. He spoke of Dermot’s unwavering love for his family, his infectious laughter, and his ability to light up any room. Colm thanked those who had supported his father during his illness and expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from the community.

As symbols of Dermot's life, items including a Glasgow Celtic jersey, a U2 album, and pictures with his son, Colm, and late

twin brother, Donal, were brought to the altar.

TRIBUTES

The Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce expressed their sorrow at the loss of Dermot O’Callaghan Jr.

They acknowledged the significant contribution of the O’Callaghan family to the town’s business and tourism sectors, highlighting the warm welcome extended to all visitors to the Fáilte Hotel.

“Dermot Jnr was always very friendly, pleasant and compassionate and it was no surprise that he built up a such wide circle of friends,” the Chamber stated.

“The O’Callaghan family has contributed enormously to the business, political and sporting life of Killarney and everybody in Chamber shares their sense of loss.”

Dr Crokes GAA Club also paid tribute to

their lifelong member. “Dermot was a lifelong supporter of the black and amber and took great pride in the many successes of the club,” club chairman Eoin Brosnan said.

“His family have always been great supporters and sponsors of the club. Even during Dermot’s illness he took a great interest in the club and he really enjoyed good banter with his friends from other clubs in the area whilst proudly standing up for the black and amber.”

The Kerry branch of the Irish Hotel Federation also paid tribute.

Chairman Brian Lawlor said: “We extend our heartfelt sympathies upon the recent passing of Dermot O’Callaghan Jr. Dermot was a true gentleman and beloved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. From an early age, his dedication and contributions to The Fáilte and the

wider College Street community were evident, leaving a lasting impression on both locals and visitors who passed through its doors over the years.”

Killarney Celtic’s Paul Sherry added: “The Failte Hotel and the O’ Callaghan Family have be an intrinsic part and supporter of Killarney Celtic Football Club and its history for many years . Our history and destiny is interlinked and so the passing of any family member not least Dermot Jr is of great sadness to the club.”

Killarney Celtic along with Killarney Vintners and the staff of The Failte Hotel provided a guard of honour for the funeral of Dermot.

He will be dearly missed by his mother Eileen, his son Colm, his partner Carla, his brother's Michael, Colm, Paudie and Niall and his extended family and friends.

Special parade for hospital and nursing home residents

Determined to spread the goodwill as far as possible for the season that’s in it, the Christmas in Killarney committee organised a very special treat for the residents of St Columbanus Home at Killarney Community Hospital on Tuesday night.

In addition to the weekly magic parades, which have added real sparkle to the streets on Saturday nights during December, a very special extra parade slowly wound its ways along the grounds of St Columbanus Home, much to the delight

of everybody present.

Residents, unable to make it to the town centre to see the weekly spectacular parades, watched from the warmth and comfort of their rooms as the fabulous floats passed by and the biggest waves and smiles of the night were reserved for Santa Claus himself who was delighted to return the compliment.

The parade also visited Kerry Cheshire on St Margaret’s Road, the Mowlam Healthcare facility on Rock Road and Killarney Community Hospital.

The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club also took part in the parade in their seasonally decorated tractors. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, organisers of the annual festival with the support of Kerry County Council, said the team behind the Christmas in Killarney was delighted to organise a very special Christmas parade for the residents for the second year running. “Christmas in Killarney is about sharing the joy and the spirit of the season with the whole community,” the Chamber said.

An end of year message from Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Co-Presidents

Johnny McGuire and Pádraig Treacy.

This time last year, in our annual seasonal message, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce outlined a wish list for 2024 and, we’re happy to report, much of what we had hoped for has been delivered.

It was a remarkable year in many respects with local, national and European elections taking place and, needless to say, we have kept note of all the promises that were made in the build-up. We might be knocking on a few doors ourselves if they are not delivered before the year is out. Chamber congratulates those that were successful in winning seats in Dáil Éireann, the European Parliament and, very importantly, in the town hall here in Killarney and county buildings in Tralee. It takes a great deal of courage to add your name to a ballot paper and it shows just how interested the candidates are in the people and the place.

Chamber was very pleased to have had a detailed meeting with Finance Minister, Jack Chambers, in the lead-up to polling day. Rather than saving it for Santa Claus, we presented him with our shopping list for 2025 and now, at least, he is very familiar with what Killarney needs and what Killarney wants.

It has been a particularly busy year for Chamber culminating, as always, with the wonderful Christmas in Killarney Festival. It was fantastic to see thousands of people lining the streets for the magic parades, the excited children visiting Santa at Knockreer, the fun that was had at the ice rink, the colour brought by the vintage tractors, the hustle and bustle at the busy Christmas markets – a welcome new addition this year – and all the enjoyment that people had at the other festival events.

The town looks sensational with the festive lights, the colourful decorations and

Happy Christmas to all in the best town of all

all the trimmings and Chamber would like to thank all the businesses and private residences that went to great lengths to add their own Christmas sparkle.

One of the most important projects this year was the inclusion of the wonderful Killarney coffee cup project in the festive season celebrations.

Santa Claus and the Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, joined forces to encourage shoppers enjoying coffee on the go to support the campaign to banish single-use cups and to bring their own reusable cups when doing their Christmas shopping or watching the parades.

In the absence of a long promised latte levy, the reusable cup takeaway system in operation has sparked a very noticeable reduction in litter throughout the town and the national park and Killarney is setting a great example for every other town, city and village to try to emulate.

Christmas in Killarney, of course, wasn’t the only bumper festival organised by

Chamber this year and we thank all those who contributed to making the St Patrick’s Festival, the brilliant Wander Wild gathering, the celebrations on the 4th of July and the exciting new Killarney Shopping Festival at Halloween the great successes they were.

They will all be back – bigger and better – in 2025 and there might even be a few more surprises thrown in to ensure Killarney retains its reputation as the best town in which to live and the best town in the country to visit.

Chamber was also thrilled to join forces with Kerry County Council this year to honour the great Brian McCarthy with the Order of Inisfallen award, the highest accolade Killarney can bestow.

He seized an opportunity in Killorglin all those years ago to launch a small foreign exchange operation that has since developed into the financial services giant that is Fexco which employs close on 3,000 people and serves five million merchant

locations in 50 countries.

Brian has the unique distinction of being Dublin born and Cork reared yet he has been honoured with the prestigious Kerry Person of the Year award. That, in itself, is some achievement and we were delighted to add the Order of Inisfallen to his list of accomplishments.

2024 has been a magnificent year for those involved in the Killarney Tidy Towns and Killarney Looking Good projects with another gold medal performance on the national stage, an impressive increase in the overall number of marks secured by the town and a great showing too in the Irish Business Against Litter competition.

Well done to all those who have played their part in keeping Killarney looking good and a very special word of gratitude to the volunteers who put in so much time and effort to play their part. The level of civic pride on show in Killarney is truly amazing.

And while on the subject of volunteers, a heartfelt thanks too to those that roll up their sleeves and help out with the Mountain Meitheal. What they have achieved has to be seen to be believed and, we’re glad to report, our work in support of the NPWS is slowly but surely winning the battle against the invasive rhododendron.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce wishes everybody a happy, healthy, peaceful and joyous Christmas and a very successful year ahead. Rest assured that Chamber will be to the fore once again in 2025 to ensure Killarney continues to prosper in every way.

While all eyes in Killarney are on Dr Crokes’ upcoming All-Ireland Club Senior Football Semi-Final against Tyrone’s Errigal Ciaran, there’s another intriguing connection to the other semi-final.

Con O’Meara, son of the late Padraig O’Meara, is the joint manager of Coolera Strandhill, the Connacht champions who will face Dublin powerhouse Cuala in the other semi-final. The O’Meara

Alternative Killarney connection to All-Ireland Club Semi-Final

family has a long and storied association with Killarney, particularly with Legion and their eponymous bar on High Street.

The late Padraig O’Meara, Con’s father, moved to Sligo and raised a family there, with Con going on to represent Sligo at senior level. Now, as a manager, Con

has led Coolera Strandhill to a historic All-Ireland semi-final. Adding to the family’s sporting achievements, Con’s brother Shane is the head coach of the Sligo All-Stars, who will face UCC Blue Demons in the All-Ireland National Cup Basketball semi-final on January 11.

With both brothers involved in highstakes matches, there’s a strong Kerry connection to the All-Ireland club scene this January. As Dr Crokes prepare for their own semi-final, it’s exciting to see another Kerry family making a significant impact on the national stage.

Chamber’s disappointment over stalled Pretty Polly site

The Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has expressed disappointment at the lack of progress on the development of the former Pretty Polly site.

Co-Presidents Johnny McGuire and Pádraig Treacy welcomed the advancements made on other significant projects in the town, such as the Aras Phadraig site and the new community nursing unit.

““It is great to see progress being made with the Aras Phadraig site and the new community nursing unit which is looking fantastic and will be a wonderful addition to Killarney when it is officially open

very soon,” they said. “The pledge to provide a minor injuries unit in Killarney is also to be welcomed as such a facility is obviously required in a town which sees its population multiply dramatically every tourism season.”

However, they expressed concern over the stalled development of the Pretty Polly site.

“While many projects are progressing at pace, it is frustrating that there is still no movement on the former Pretty Polly site which is earmarked for development as a training college for the hospitality industry,” the co-presidents stated.

Rena’s Christmas legacy lives on

The spirit of the late Rena Kennelly continues to shine in Killarney this Christmas season.

Her family has carried on her legacy by overseeing the annual installation of the stunning Christmas crib in St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Rena dedicated much of her life to making Killarney a magical place during the festive period. For over five decades, she meticulously crafted the life-sized crib, sourcing materials like moss and fir trees herself.

Rena, who passed away last March, lived in Aghadoe, Killarney and former-

ly at Cleeny, Killarney and Ballymullen, Tralee.

Last year, a new, state-of-the-art crib was unveiled, designed for a new generation. Even then, Kennelly was actively involved in its creation. This year, her daughter Kate Kennelly and her grandchildren, along with the help of Andrew

Joy and Fr Kieran O'Brien, have continued the family tradition.

Her dedication to her community was recognised with the prestigious Benemerenti Medal from Pope Francis and a civic award from Kerry County Council.

“Rena was a wonderfully creative and gifted woman and we all saw her remarkable work in the cathedral every year,” said Cllr Niall Kelleher, Chairman of the Christmas in Killarney Committee.”

Festive French breakfast for French for All students

Students from the refreshers, intermediate and advanced classes at French for All enjoyed a festive treat recently at Petit Délice bakery in Killarney.

The annual Christmas celebration featured a traditional French breakfast, complete with a beautiful selection of viennoiseries, pains au chocolat, croissants, brioche, and chouquettes.

Dannie, the owner of Petit Délice Killarney (second left in the image), welcomed the students and helped them enjoy their

delicious breakfast.

Eilish O Donoghue, seated at the top of the table in the image, was the lucky winner of a bûche de Noël, a traditional French Christmas log cake.

The festive breakfast was a delightful way for the students to practice their French and learn more about French culture. The next term at French for All will resume on January 7 for children, exam students, and adult conversational French classes. How can you buy Killarney, as historical calendar goes on sale?

For 75 years, people have wondered—how can you truly capture the soul of Killarney?

Local historian Damien Switzer has finally answered that question with an offering as rich and vibrant as the town itself. Now, you can hold Killarney in your hands with Damien’s extraordinary Killarney Historical Calendar. This isn’t just a calendar; it’s a heartfelt journey through time, packed with an incredible 670 images—yes, you read that right. Across 28 stunning A3 pages, you’ll find 500 portraits of the people who breathe life into Killarney—young and old, past and present—alongside 170 nostalgic scenes of shopfronts, school classes, sports teams, street events, and more. Every photo is lovingly captioned, inviting you to step into moments spanning from the 1860s to the 1990s. This calendar is much more than ink on paper; it’s a tribute to generations who’ve made Killarney special. As Johnny McGuire of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce aptly put it: “More of a book on Killarney than a cal-

endar... and a good one at that!”

For those who call Killarney home, this calendar is a bridge to your roots. For others, it’s a window into the heart of this remarkable place. With every turn of the page, memories will resurface, stories will unfold, and perhaps a lively debate or two will spark!

Damien himself says it best:

“It’s my way of helping to preserve Killarney’s history.”

After a long wait since the last edition in 2020, this much-anticipated treasure is finally here—just in time for 2025. Calendars will be on sale from Thursday, December 19, to Tuesday, December 24 at the former Ulster Bank premises on New Street/Beech Road and select local outlets.

But don’t wait—stock is limited, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. This is 100% Made in Killarney, an essential gift for every household.

Celebrate Nollaig na mBan at Dromhall in aid of KHF

Nollaig na mBan, or Women’s Little Christmas, is one of the more unique Christmas traditions in Ireland, especially in the counties of Cork and Kerry.

This year Bernadette Randles and the Randles family have kindly offered to host a coffee morning to benefit Kerry Hospice. This is an ideal opportunity to begin the celebrations on the final day of the festive season and enjoy delicious

coffee, tea and treats in the company of friends.

“Ladies, you deserve to treat yourselves after all your hard work over the Christmas period. So why not come along for a post-Christmas coffee and catch up with friends while supporting a charity that is close to the hearts of many people,” said Bernadette.

The time is from 11am to 1pm on January 6. There will also be a raffle for some nice prizes on the day.

Killarney Soroptimists back ADAPT Kerry at Christmas

Killarney Soroptimist Club and family and friends created Christmas hampers for the sixth year running. This Friday they travelled to Tralee to present them to Catherine Casey the manager of Adapt Kerry, Women’s Refuge and Support Services.

The Killarney Soroptimist Club President Anne Wrenn said “It is wonderful to be in a position to donate these Christmas hampers to Adapt again this year. We are thrilled with the response since we decided to go ahead and amazed at the generosity and the number of hampers and vouchers. We wish to thank all those who donated including Sheila Rice of the Hope Foundation and the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney as well as our members. Hopefully, they will make

a difference to the women and children that are supported by ADAPT Kerry.” Catherine Casey, General Manager of ADAPT Kerry said: We were again very grateful to all the members of the Killarney Soroptimist Club. We recognise that there is a lot of organising and work done by the Club President and all the members in collecting and putting the hampers together, especially Teresa Irwin Project Manager, Sheila Casey and Doreen Brosnan. It is heartwarming to see the support and generosity of the Club. Adapt Kerry and the Killarney Soroptimist have built a very good relationship over the last number of years. There is no doubt that their work raises awareness of our service and has contributed to many more women contacting us for support by phone, through our outreach service and availing of refuge."

Muckross Park Hotel renews sponsorship of Muckross Rowing Club

Last week, representatives of Muckross Rowing Club and the Muckross Park Hotel gathered at the hotel to mark a successful year of partnership in 2024 and the renewal of the hotel’s sponsorship of the local rowing club in Muckross for 2025.

On behalf of the committee and members of Muckross RC, Sean Daly expressed his thanks to Garrett Power, General Manager of Muckross Park Hotel & Spa, for the hotel’s generosity and ongoing support as the club’s main sponsor.

The junior membership of the rowing club has grown significantly in recent years and the generous sponsorship of the Muckross Park has enabled continued investment in the club’s equipment and facilities. This directly supports over 80 young boys and girls from 12-18 to partake in the sport of rowing year round. Muckross RC is delighted to have the backing of the Muckross Park Hotel, part of the iNUA Hotel Collection, and we look forward to continued partnership in the years ahead.

The Muckross Park will play host to the club once again on Friday, December 27, for the club’s Table Quiz festive fundraiser in Colgan’s Bar. This is a great opportu-

nity for club members, past and present, supporters, family and friends to meet and catch up over the holiday period. The fun Christmas quiz will kick off at 7pm with adult tables of 4 for €40 and under 18s for €20.

Muckross Park Hotel and Colgan’s Bar also looks forward to welcoming customers for their festive meets ups, dining and celebrations over the Christmas and New Year period. In the lead up to Christmas, Colgan’s Bar will open every Friday and Saturday from 3pm to close until Saturday 21December. Following the MRC quiz night on Friday 27, Colgan’s will remain open from Saturday 28 December until Thursday 2 January before the hotel’s seasonal closure on Friday 3 January. From watching the sport to a catch-up with family or friends, Colgan’s Bar has a hearty menu ready and waiting to make your holiday moments unforgettable.

Inaugural Lynn Jones Tournament a success

A celebration of women's basketball took place on Saturday as the Inaugural Lynn Jones Tournament was held. The tournament, the brainchild of James Fleming, was a fitting tribute to Lynn Jones's outstanding contribution to the sport in Killarney, Kerry, and Ireland.

For over 25 years, Lynn Jones has been a dominant force in Irish basketball, and the tournament was a well-deserved

recognition of her achievements. Seven teams, including Killarney Cougars, Glanmire, St Colman's Milltown, Limerick Celtics, Bantry, St Mary's Castleisland, and St Pauls, participated in the event.

After a thrilling morning of basketball, St Paul's and St Colman's qualified for the Plate Final, while Bantry and Limerick Celtics advanced to the Cup Final. Both finals were closely contested, with St Colman's and Bantry emerging victorious.

A Christmas Message from Bishop Ray Browne

volunteers involved.

It is wonderful that Christmas continues to be a family celebration in Ireland. Families celebrate together, family members love to ‘be home for Christmas’. Children grow up with fond memories of Christmas at home. I encourage all families to share their faith with their children through the story of Christmas. The birth of Jesus both fulfilled and revealed the loving plans of God the Father for all peoples. Jesus reveals that God is love, Jesus has offered us the gift of eternal life. May a simple family crib have a special place in your home.

Dia dhiabh. Nollaig Shona dhiabh go léir. A happy and faith-filled Christmas to one and all. Christmas is a time to count our blessings and rejoice. Think of and give thanks for all that is good in all the communities and parishes of our diocese. Thank you to the priests and all in our parishes; thank you to all our school communities. Thank you to all involved in voluntary groups: in sport, in the arts, in social care, - so many wonderful things are happening everywhere. From the local media, print, radio and online, again and again we realise the wonderful voluntary bodies present in our communities. Long may it continue. Sincere thanks to all the

This year we cannot ignore the fact that many families in Ireland lack the basics required to have a happy Christmas. Thousands of individuals, couples and families are spending another Christmas without a home of their own. Many adults are exhausted by the year-round struggle to earn sufficient money to pay the ordinary bills that arise for a family. Many living among us find themselves far from their families and homeland this Christmas. For those struggling and almost despairing, may the scene in the stable of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus give hope and comfort.

In the Church, in tune with the ancient biblical tradition, 2025 will be a Jubilee

Year, a Holy Year. A Jubilee year is held every twenty-five years in celebration of the Christmas event, the Incarnation, the Birth of Jesus Christ. In all our parishes we will celebrate the opening of the jubilee year on Sunday 29th December, the Feast of the Holy Family. For 2025 Pope Francis has chosen the theme, ‘Pilgrims of Hope’. Pilgrimage points to life as a journey, a journey in search of meaning and fulfilment, a fulfilment that is to be found in our relationship with Jesus Christ. The following from the writings of Pope Francis speaks to us all of Christian hope:

“Dear sister, dear brother, even if in your heart you have buried hope, do not give up: God is greater. Darkness and death do not have the last word. Be strong, for with God nothing is lost! The first Christians depicted hope as an anchor. Hope was an anchor fixed to the shores beyond. …

The message of hope should not be confined to our sacred places but should be brought to everyone. For everyone is in need of reassurance, … How beautiful it is to be Christians who offer consolation, who bear the burdens of others and who offer encouragement: messengers of life in a time of death!

In every Galilee, in every area of the hu-

man family to which we all belong and which is part of us – for we are all brothers and sisters – may we bring the song of life! Let us silence the cries of death, no more wars! May we stop the production and trade of weapons, since we need bread not guns. Let the abortion and killing of innocent lives end. May the hearts of those who have enough be open to filling the empty hands of those who do not have the bare necessities. …”

Put the crib scene, the birth of Jesus, at the centre of your Christmas. Let it remind you of how God ‘loved the world so much, that he gave his only Son’ (Jn 3:16), and that all of us have so much to be grateful for. May God’s goodness to us inspire in us goodness towards others.

‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, And peace to all people who enjoy his favour.’ (Lk: 2.14)

Our Lady, Queen of Peace, intercede for peace for the whole world.

Le gach dea-ghuí, í gcomhair na Nollag. Every Christmas blessing on all in our communities.

The final was an all-Kerry affair, with the Natterjack Toads from Glenbeigh securing second place.

Over three days, 42 teams from across Ireland competed for the Active Retirement Ireland Cup in this annual event.

“Congratulations to the Fossa Sikas bowls team for their brilliant achievement at this year’s National Bowls Competition, taking home the large bowls plate and representing Kerry with pride. In particular, I would like to commend

team member Norman Wilson who at age 96 is our most senior bowler and an inspiration to everyone who has competed in the tournament this week,” said Maureen Kavanagh, CEO of Active Retirement Ireland.

Kerry Airport gearing up for busy Christmas period

Passengers travelling through Kerry Airport are being advised to allow plenty of time before boarding their flights to ensure a seamless experience over the Christmas period.

The ongoing work to develop a new arrivals hall and departures lounge coupled with flights operating at capacity will result in the airport being busier than normal at this time of year. Kerry Airport will close on Christmas Eve and reopen on St Stephen’s Day and intending passengers are advised to check

with their airline for any travel updates over the coming days.

“Christmas is always a busy time of year for airlines and airport staff. My recommendation is that if you are heading out on a flight, notwithstanding the ongoing construction work, make sure you turn up early because there will be significant crowds departing on trips or heading home to loved ones,” said Kerry Airport CEO John Mulhern. “We’ll have thousands of people travelling to Kerry from all corners of the world and we look forward to welcoming them home for Christmas.”

Local pupils’

art published in 2025 road safety calendar

Two talented young artists from Killarney have been honoured for their exceptional work in the Kerry County Council Road Safety Art Calendar Competition.

Eabha Huggett Davies from Holy Cross Mercy Primary School and Fionn Spellman from Lissivigeen National School were recognized for their outstanding artwork, which will be featured on the July and August pages of the 2025 calendar, respectively.

The awards ceremony was held in County Buildings, where the students were presented with plaques and calendars by Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Brendan Fitzgerald, and Director of Services for Roads and Transport, Frank Hartnett.

“A lot of work goes on behind the scenes in planning and preparing for the annual

road safety calendar competition and the award ceremony for the winning students, and I think its one of the nicer jobs we get to do in road safety each year, and it’s that bit more special because it involves the students themselves,” Kerry County Council's Road Safety Officer, Declan Keogh.

The competition, which received hundreds of entries from schools across the county, aims to raise awareness about road safety among young people. The winning artwork showcases the creativity and talent of the students, as well as their understanding of important road safety messages.

Judo Club shines at All-Ireland Championships

On Saturday last a group of 14 dedicated young members from Killarney Judo Club travelled to the National Sports Centre to compete in the All-Ireland Judo Championships.

This prestigious event attracted over 390 participants from across Ireland, making it one of the largest judo competitions in the country. Despite the tough competition, the Killarney team displayed impressive skill and determination.

"This was the largest group from Killarney to travel in over 15 years and for many, it was their first time at a National event. The players fought very well and it's clear

their standard has grown throughout," said Coach Tim Kelly

“While not everyone won a medal, the players gave everything and did their best while getting an opportunity to make new friends in Judo.”

The Killarney club achieved notable success at the event. Michelle Walsh and Zarah Tomlinson secured gold medals, while Cuan Kelly won silver. Emily O’Donoghue De Vries, Danielle Walsh, Rian Horgan, Caoimhe Casey, and Carolina Kelly all brought home bronze medals.

The remaining team members, Aideen Casey, Devon Koen, Ethan Koen, Alan O’Donoghue De Vries, and Jack Hanrahan also put in strong performances.

Historic Kerry Co-op deal

In a historic move, Kerry Co-op shareholders this week voted overwhelmingly in favour of a proposal to acquire Kerry Dairy Ireland and exchange shares with Kerry Group.

This landmark decision will directly benefit Kerry Co-op members, delivering approximately €1.4 billion in value. The vote took place at a Special General Meeting held at the INEC on Monday with 82% of eligible members present casting their votes in favour of the proposal.

James Tangney, Chairman of Kerry Coop, said:

“I am very pleased that the shareholders of Kerry Co-op have today voted in favour of the proposal. Today’s acceptance commences a journey that will ultimately lead to the full ownership of Kerry Dairy Ireland, one of the leading

dairy businesses in the country, while its also releases c.85% of Kerry Co-op’s Kerry Group shares into the hands of our members to be retained or sold by each of them at a time of their choosing.

“The transaction is transformational for Kerry Co-op and satisfies the diverse aspirations of the vast majority of our members. Working in partnership with Kerry Group, the focus of the Kerry Dairy Ireland Board will be to transition the business to that of a Co-op ethos and build further on the strong commercial platform in place to deliver sustainable returns in the months and years ahead for all our members. We look forward to working with Pat Murphy, CEO of Kerry Dairy Ireland, and his accomplished leadership team to make this a reality.”

This acquisition is poised to reshape the Irish dairy industry.

Paps of Anú are calling us to celebrate the Winter Solstice

The annual call from Musician Derry Healy and our ancient ancestors to celebrate the Winter Solstice on the sacred ‘Paps of Anú’ is almost upon us.

This year's charity event takes place on Saturday, 21st December, departing Garries Bridge, Glenflesk at 6.30 am. Carpooling is encouraged at the Kerry Way Inn, Glenflesk.

This year's chosen charity is Killarney Water Rescue - a voluntary team of dedicated people, whose mission is to respond, support and assist in search and rescue on a 24/7/365 basis.

Paddy Chauvet and staff will be baking scones and providing complimentary tea and coffee for all the early risers after the trek. Donations to Killarney Water Rescue can be given in the morning at the Kerry Way Inn.

The long walk in darkness to the summit, has two strenuous inclines, leading to the Western Pap at 690 Metres. At approximately 8.45 am sunrise begins.

John Lynch, whose family are neighbouring landowners, will perform an

ancient ritual of placing a piece of holly into the Cairn on the summit. Then the craic begins with the finest musicians from Glenflesk, Derry and Rosie Healy and Michael MacGillycuddy, as John sets the pace for the Sliabh Luachra Polka. Mountaineer Donie Mulcahy and crew will guide the walkers to and from the summit.

These ancient sacred summits, ‘The Paps of Anú’, resemble a pair of breastshaped hills known as ‘The Paps’ in the Derry Na Saggart Mountains close to the Cork-Kerry border. The Paps have long been associated with mythology, mysticism and majesty. The Goddess Anú represents all that is earthly, fertile, abundant and protective.

It is compulsory to wear a head torch, a level of fitness is required. Proper walking boots and rain gear are advised.

Santa Claus is coming

It is that time of year again when Santa will be flying around Killarney on Christmas Eve delivering his presents to all the good boys and girls.

This time last year we reported on how Santa tackles the issue of new modern homes with no chimneys and how he uses his magic key to allow him deliver his gifts safely.

We have again been in contact with the North Pole to check on progress and we are informed that all is going to plan for Santa’s journey next Tuesday night. He has confirmed that his magic key is fully charged and ready again to access any new homes in Killarney. He also assured anyone who may not be in their home this Christmas for any reason, not to worry, Santa will deliver.

There were concerns raised last week with Storm Darragh but we are assured that all is running smooth in Santa’s Village currently, the reindeer are all in good health and the presents are almost loaded onto Santas sleigh. He has asked that all the boys and girls be on their best behaviour this weekend and go to bed early on Christmas Eve. It is estimated he will arrive late on Christmas Eve but a tail wind could bring his arrival forward.

If any of the boys and girls hear Santa

arriving on Christmas Eve his advice is this, "Close your eyes, take slow deep breaths and fall back asleep, before you know it, it will be Christmas morning and I will be back in the North Pole relaxing after a long night."

With a sprinkle of magic and a dash of cheer Santas magic key works one special night of the year.

Quietly he enters as the children all sleep and lays down their presents without a peep.

In the blink of an eye he departs from the scene, but only from those who truly believe

Kilcummin Sewage Scheme to be connected in New Year

A long-standing issue regarding the Kilcummin Sewage Scheme is set to be resolved, with connections to the main sewer scheduled for early next year.

Following a period of mediation, Michael Healy-Rae, TD, played a crucial role in resolving the dispute between the developer and Uisce Éireann.

The agreement will allow residents of the village, as well as those in the Mountain View and Páirc Chuimín developments, to connect to the main sewer system.

“I was glad to act in a mediation role over recent weeks regarding a number of issues that had to be sorted out to allow the Kilcummin Sewage Scheme to be commissioned,’ said Healy-Rae. "I want to thank the developer and Uisce Eireann most sincerely for all acting in good faith in the interests of the community, all the families and couples who wish to move into new properties as soon as possible.”

This resolution comes after months of frustration and concern among residents and local councillors.

However, local councillor Mare Moloney is not convinced that the issue is resolved.

She said: “Like Deputy Healy Rae, I too have been working with Uisce Éireann in an effort to sort out some ongoing issues which were preventing Pairc Cuimin and Mountain View Estates being connected to the sewerage scheme. Mountain View is subject of an application to Kerry County Council to be taken in charge while there were legal issues holding up Pairc Cuimmin.”

There were a number of people who bought a house in the last phase of development in Pairc Cuimmin who could not move into their new home over the legal issue. The provision of a sewerage scheme for Kilcummin was approved because of pollution to the Loch Lein catchment area and it just doesn't make sense that two estates which are the biggest users have still not been connected. Hopefully this will be rectified in the New Year and we can finally see the Sewerage Scheme working to full capacity.”

Revolut warns against Christmas ticket scams

Irish Christmas shoppers are being advised to exercise caution as concert ticket scams see a significant increase, according to Revolut.

On Wednesday, the digital bank reported a 27% surge in losses due to gig ticket fraud during the final two weeks of November compared to the first half of the month.

With high-profile artists like Charli XCX and Oasis scheduled to perform in Ireland next year, Revolut highlighted that concert tickets are a top priority for many holiday shoppers, making scams a growing concern.

“We know that tickets for some of next year’s most anticipated concerts would make the perfect gift for many young

Mr. Eborne cautioned against panic-buying tickets during last-minute shopping, explaining that scammers exploit the “fear of missing out” on major events. Revolut urged gig-goers and gift-givers to only purchase tickets from reputable sources and avoid unverified resellers who could be fraudulent.

In a recent survey of over 1,000 Revolut users in the Republic of Ireland, more than 25% admitted they expect to exceed their holiday budget. Additionally, 10% of respondents said they were considering taking out loans to fund their Christmas expenses.

foiled plot

to kill Pope during Iraq visit

A plot to assassinate Pope Francis during his 2021 visit to Iraq was thwarted thanks to a tip-off from British intelligence, as revealed in his upcoming autobiography.

The Pope recounts that shortly after his arrival in Baghdad in March 2021, he was informed of a planned attack involving two suicide bombers targeting one of his scheduled appearances.

The attackers were intercepted and killed, according to excerpts published by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. The three-day visit, conducted amid the COVID-19 pandemic, marked the first papal visit to Iraq and was accompanied by extensive security measures.

In the years leading up to the trip, Iraq experienced increased sectarian violence, with conflicts between Shia and Sunni Muslims and targeted persecution of religious minorities, including a significant

decline in the Christian population due to attacks from the Islamic State group and other Sunni extremists. The Pope explains in his autobiography that "almost everyone advised me against" the visit, but he felt it was necessary to proceed.

He credits British intelligence with uncovering the plot, which was then passed on to Iraqi authorities and relayed to his security team after his arrival.

"A woman armed with explosives and a young suicide bomber were en route to Mosul to target the papal visit," he writes. "Additionally, a van had sped off with the same intent."

The Pope details that when he later asked a security official about the fate of the attackers, he received a blunt response: "They are no more." The Iraqi police had intercepted and neutralised them, he notes.

The autobiography, titled Hope, is set to be released on January 14.

The incident occurred shortly before 11am at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, which serves 420 students ranging from preschool to 12th grade. The shooter, identified by police as Natalie Rupnow, who also went by the name Samantha, was a student at the school.

The alarm was raised by a second-grade student, estimated to be seven or eight years old, who called 911 to report the shooting, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes revealed during a press conference.

However, such measures have often faced significant political resistance.

Louise lights the way for young rally drivers

Killarney's Louise Bourke helped launch RallyConnection’s new Junior Division last week.

The Waterford-based rally school launched its exciting new programme on Friday, with Bourke and her co-driver Susan Smith showcasing the school’s new Peugeot 206. This expansion offers young enthusiasts

a comprehensive range of options, from introductory experiences to advanced training and licensing courses.

“I’m thrilled to be involved in RallyConnection’s Junior Division launch,” said Bourke. “It’s fantastic to see a programme that provides such a clear pathway for young drivers. This initiative will undoubtedly spark a new generation of rally enthusiasts in Ireland.”

Motor Distributors Limited (MDL) has announced the appointment of prominent motor retailers Ahern's Castleisland as main dealers in Kerry for the BYD range of passenger cars.

Expanding the BYD network to eight outlets overall, Ahern's Castleisland will market itself as ‘BYD Kerry’ and is located on Tralee Road, at the north-western approach to Castleisland.

Describing their outlet as ‘Munster’s Largest Motorstore’, Aherns Castleisland is a ‘leading name for motoring in County Kerry’ and enjoys a history and a reputation that has resonated in the minds of motorists throughout the Kingdom and beyond for almost 100 years since its establishment by the late Jack Ahern in 1927.

Pat Ahern, dealer principal at Ahern's Castleisland said: “We welcome our appointment and the opportunity it brings to offer customers a new and exciting product range and the chance to share in the value and enjoyment that BYD has brought to Ireland with their award-winning ATTO 3, compact DOLPHIN, stunning SEAL, and all-new SEAL U Super Hybrid, all of which will be available to view in our showrooms.”

Currently four models make up the BYD range to be sold by Ahern's Castleis-

land. First to arrive in Ireland some 18 months ago was the BYD ATTO 3 SUV. Since then, three additional models have been added: the BYD DOLPHIN compact C-segment hatchback, the ‘strikingly sporty’ 4-door D-segment sedan, BYD SEAL and the BYD SEAL U Super Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid SUV launched in October. Five additional models are expected to be introduced

in Ireland in 2025.

Celebrating 30 years in business, BYD has its manufacturing base in China and has announced plans to construct a European plant in Hungary. Since its arrival, BYD has been warmly welcomed by motor industry commentators and by its growing body of owners, a fact recognised by its success as one of Ireland’s top-selling EV model ranges, and

by the achievement of BYD ATTO 3 in winning the coveted ‘Continental Irish Small Compact SUV 2024’ award and the success of the BYD SEAL winning the ‘Continental Irish Large Car of the Year 2025’ award, presented by members of the Motoring Media Association of Ireland only last month. McElligott’s of Tralee open new state-of-the-art Kia showroom

This showroom upgrade is part of Kia’s new Global Store Concept and McElligott’s is one of the first dealers in the country to complete construction just in time for the busy 251 sales period which commences in January.

Both Kia and McElligott’s are experiencing a huge period of growth as the brand goes from strength to strength and have now solidified themselves as a top-selling car brand in both Kerry and indeed nationwide.

McElligott’s have been trading in Kerry since 1870 but their goal has remained unchanged by providing a customer-first, customer-focused experience which has established them as a trusted household name in Kerry and beyond. In recent times, this success has been recognised as McElligott’s was awarded the 2023 European Kia Dealer of the Year and also the 2024 Irish Kia Aftersales Dealer of the Year.

The design of the new showroom also referred to as the Kia store, splits the space into two different dimensions comprising of a vehicle display zone and a separate customer zone, each

with a different spatial theme and colour scheme. The customer zone is a warm space with a minimalistic design, nothing like a traditional dealership. It consists of wooden tones and an earthy cosiness more in line with a living room rather than a showroom. Gentle lighting and woven furniture fabrics add additional warmth.

Declan O’Hara, Dealer Principal of McElligott’s commented ‘We are delighted and proud to be representing Kia in Kerry. Our new Kia showroom is a stateof-the-art facility for our customers and staff alike and showcases the fantastic range of Kia vehicles in equally beautiful surroundings. We are all energised by this new facility and would welcome all people in the area to come and have a look for themselves over the coming weeks.”

There’s a great sense of ease that comes when life flows. That’s the hidden power of movement. The Kia electric range is packed with technology designed to do exactly that. To keep you moving, making every daily journey a smooth and effortless ride. Discover our 251 offers with finance from 0% APR, a free €500 SuperValu gift card and get a Free Home Charge Point installation with all our electric vehicles.

Fire and safety tips at Christmas

Christmas is a busy time of the year and it can be easy to become complacent when it comes to fire and home safety.

• Fire and safety hazards can be minimised by taking some basic precautions

• Only buy festive lighting marked with a CE mark

• Switch off all festive lights when unattended.

• Use only one extension cord – do not double up on extension cords.

• Do not use outdoor lights indoors.

• Ensure your real Christmas tree is a safe

distance from any open flames and be wary of candles.

• Review leads and plugs for fraying and replace if needed.

• Check smoke detectors are in working order. A fire blanket is a good investment for any home.

If you are away from your home over Christmas consider a timer switch for lights and do not advertise that your

home is vacant on social media. Thefts occur at Christmas time too unfortunately.

If your home is to be unoccupied for a longer period, inform your insurers, drain the water system so that freezing of pipes cannot occur and ask a friend or relation to check your home daily.

Please check on the wellbeing of any neighbours who are alone over the Christmas period. Stay safe and have a peaceful, relaxing and happy Christmas.

Nothing is more painful in this worldthan losing someone you love so dearly. Mum, you have left some wonderful memories that will never fade from our hearts.

Time passes but not one day goes by that you are not in our thoughts. The day you died was not just a date in a calendar it was the day when our very existence changed forever.

Life has never been the same.

We miss and love you every single day, Maura and Patrick, Geraldine and John, and grandson Harry. xxx

Rest forevermore in the Arms of Jesus.

O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted.

But it’s the quiet moments, when we open your empty bedroom or stop and stare at your picture in the hall. That the loneliness seems to last. You’re brought up in conversation every day. Even by your nieces and nephew, that you never got to meet. You will never truly die, as long as we live.

Love you always, our brother Mart. Mags, Kerrie and Mike. xxx

Oh, Jesus full of grace and charity, victim for sinners, so impelled by your love of us that you willed to die on the cross. I humbly entreat Thee to glorify in heaven and on earth, the servant of God. A Christmas remembrance Christmas comes every year, that’s very true.

Julianne, would say go for a drive, be on your way.

Then, Caroline, Deirdre, and myself would go to Rossbeigh.

This is our 37th year in a row, that we will be there.

Tara would stay with Julianne and help her to prepare.

Then we could get the text, don’t be late.

Everything was ready just to fill our plates.

Tara took over the cooking when Julianne passed away.

The dinner was just like mothers cooking on the day.

We would call to the church in Glenbeigh on our way.

Light a candle for our families, Julianne and a prayer we would say.

Julianne was baptised, made her communion and confirmation there. We enjoyed going to the beach and the walk in the fresh air.

This is the church we got married in, on the 16th January 1964.

We thank god for a wonderful wife and mother who we all adored.

Love you always, Donie and family. xxx

Cronin makes move from Crokes to Crows

Kayleigh Cronin has signed for Adelaide Crows as a rookie for the 2025 Australian Football League Woman’s season.

Cronin, 28, joins the Crows after a fairytale year for County Kerry in the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA).

Dr Crokes member Cronin led Kerry to its first All-Ireland Senior Final win in 31 years, receiving Player of the Match honours for her dominant performance at full-back.

The 181cm left footer was selected in the All-Star team for the second time in her career and was one of three finalists in the LGFA Senior Player of the Year 2024.

Crows Head of Women’s Football Phil Harper said Cronin would join the team for pre-season next year.

“Kayleigh is a powerful athlete with excellent speed for her size and a fierce competitive streak,” Harper said.

“She defends really strongly, likes to take the game on, is driven to succeed and a perfect fit for our environment.”

An all-round athlete, Cronin previously represented Ireland in discus and also played soccer.

Cronin is the fourth Irish player in Adelaide’s AFLW squad, joining All-Australian wing Niamh Kelly, new recruit Grace Kelly and promising rookie Amy Boyle Carr.

“We believe Kayleigh has the skillset to help make us better as a team and she is also a great character,” Harper said.

“Kayleigh can’t wait to get started and we look forward to welcoming her to Adelaide next year.”

Suarez off to a winning start

MENS BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Dublin Lions 66 | Scotts Lakers 71 COLAISTE BRIDE, CLONDALKIN

A busy week for Scotts Lakers new head coach Manuel Suarez was topped off with a hard earned win over Joels Dublin Lions in Clondalkin. He arrived on Monday, got to know his new team with a couple of training sessions and then faced Irish international Aidan Igiehon and his pack of Lions on Saturday evening. He will have learned more after this latest win, the seventh of the season for the Lakers, but will be more than happy with his side's display. It was something he alluded to afterwards but is targeting future improvement.

The Seville native felt the team's rearguard action in the final quarter was pivotal to the win. "It was a difficult game, with a lot of runs for both teams but thanks to the defence in the last quarter, we got an important win on the road. But we still have a lot to improve on but I'm really happy for the guys and the club. I'm very grateful for this opportunity and it was a great way to start this experience." It was a tight game throughout with the middle quarters seeing the lead exchange hands on numerous occasions but that final quarter steeliness from the Lakers held the Lions to just thirteen points and helped turn a possible reverse into a very important win. It was achieved with some shrewd decision making from Suarez and what was particularly pleasing was the

even scoring spread and the ability of different players to contribute at vital times. The first quarter was a case in point as six different players got on the scoresheet to help the Lakers stay pace with the Lions having a slight 18-17 advantage. Mark Sheehan was the headline act, hitting two swift threes early in the quarter. Eoin Carroll opened the scoring while Oisin Spring closed the first quarter account. In between Abdul Oladipupo worked hard for his points , Rui Saravia hit a nice floater while Mikah Blackwell was at the end of some nice combination play. The second quarter saw the Lakers make a strong start, inspired by Oladipupo promptings and when Mark Sheehan hit another from downtown the Lakers held a seven point lead, 27-20. Aran Lee and Tiernan Howe had done the bulk of the heavy lifting for the Lions with the Lakers defence keeping Aidan Igiehon in check under the basket. But Kevin Anyanwu started to spark and that inspired Michael O'Connor and Conor Dikcius to greater efforts. Blackwell ensured his side kept their noses in front aided by a Darnell Snyers three and that saw the Lakers in front by 39-34 at the turnaround . Igiehon had little joy inside in the first half so he decided to take up station further out and that started to pay dividends. He hit nine points in a little over four minutes and teammate Evan Blackmon also wad-

ed in to help the Lions create an eleven point swing and go 47-41 clear midway through. He would hit two further threes but the Lakers gathered themselves thanks to great work from Blackwell, Snyers, Carroll and Oladipupo on the offensive end and Jack O'Sullivan at the other end. That helped to make the game anyones heading down the stretch. And the Lakers came out like greyhounds out of the traps in the pivotal fourth quarter. Oisin Spring stole in for two crucial baskets either side of a Blackwell dunk and an Oladipupo effort. That prompted a Lion's time out but it had little effect as Snyers and Carroll made it a ten point game, 65-55 with five minutes on the clock. Any comfort the Lakers might have felt soon evaporated as Howe hit two outside shots in a row to cut the gap to four. But what's seldom is wonderful as Eoin Carroll hit a three from the corner to land his side a huge psychological edge. It

had the required effect as the Lions could only come to within four points before Blackwell signed off on the scoring for the night from the charity stripe, to give his side a 71-66 win.

Captain Rui Saravia who played a huge role defensively for his side saw the good and bad in his sides defending."Manuel mentioned Aidan Igiehon in his scouting report so it was important that we were ready physically and mentally for the game. But we all know we still need to work on our rotation in defence. " He welcomed new coach Manuel Suarez and his freshness." We only had one week but it was great to see his new ideas working already. As captain I'm very proud of the guys and the effort they put in. We're already thinking of the next home game (Waterford Vikings next Saturday)." Mikah Blackwell hit 20 points, Abdul Oladipupo had 14, Darnell Snyers and Eoin Carroll netted 10 apiece, Mark Sheehan had 9, Oisin Spring 6 and Rui Saravia 2.

For the Lions Aidan Igiehon had 18, Aran Lee 17, and Tiernan Howe was next best with 16.

The Lakers final home game of 2024 will see the Waterford Vikings visit the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre this Saturday December 21st with a 7.30pm tip off. The Vikings may be short on wins but they are extremely competitive and possess, in Aaron Jackson and James Aboaba, two consistent scorers. It will be Manuel Suarez first home game in charge of the Lakers and he will be busy during the week fine tuning his charges .

Wildcats rally to overcome spirited St Paul’s

The Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre played host once again to a top-class game, played at a great pace and featuring excellent scores. But not for the first time, Utility Trust St Pauls came up short in a tight final quarter. James Fleming's side are measuring themselves against the league's best, and results show they are not far off, with a little luck possibly being the difference. They have faced multiple honours winners Killester, Brunell, and league leaders SETU Waterford Wildcats, with the widest losing margin just seven points, including a narrow three-point reverse to Portlaoise Panthers.

In a very competitive league, this game showcased the closeness of encounters.

Tied at halftime, St Pauls led by four heading into the final quarter. Wildcats’ know-how, inspired by Sarah Hickey and Aisha McCalla, won the day. Mathilda Diop hit 23 points, Gracen Kerr proved herself among the league's best point guards, and Meabh Barry contributed strongly, filling in for Megan Ormiston, who had foul trouble.

Ormiston opened the scoring, with Barry and Wildcats’ Americans McCalla and Chelsea Cain trading baskets. Simeone O’Shea put St Pauls ahead, but McCalla and Cain responded. Denise Dunlea pushed St Pauls 12-8 clear before Sarah Hickey and Kate Hickey influenced alongside Aoife Brett. Lorraine Scanlon’s three-point play edged St Pauls 19-18 ahead.

Kerr hit a big one early in the second

quarter, with Ormiston’s free throws putting St Pauls in front. Diop added a three-point play, helping St Pauls lead 31-27. Wildcats’ Hickey, Orla Dullaghan, Cain, and McCalla turned the tide, but Kerr and Ormiston restored parity at halftime.

Diop and Scanlon opened a five-point gap early in the second half. Ormiston picked up two fouls, but Barry stepped up, alongside Diop and Kerr. Leah McMahon added a basket, but Cain and Brett halved St Pauls’ eight-point lead to 61-57 entering the final quarter. Wildcats’ McCalla, on four fouls, still influenced the game. Cain and Brett chipped into the lead, but Kerr led St Pauls’ resistance. McCalla struck from downtown to give Wildcats the lead. Diop and Ormiston replied, but Sarah Hickey, McCalla, and Helena Rohan pulled Wildcats six clear. Diop’s three-point play brought it back to three, but St Pauls couldn’t close the gap, falling 82-77.

Diop hit 23 points, Kerr 21, Ormiston 12, Barry 8, Scanlon 5, O'Shea 4, Dunlea, and McMahon 2 each. McCalla scored 25 for the winners, Sarah Hickey 24, Cain 13, and Brett 10.

St Pauls face Fr Matthews in Cork this Saturday, December 21, at 2pm. Cup finalists last season, they come off a derby loss to Brunell but can point to a three-point win over Killester as proof of their form. They are powered by Grainne Dwyer, Lesley Ann Wilkinson, Shannon Brady, and Kyra White.

Lakers new head coach Manuel Suarez

Visiting Mick

There is something special about him but what is it? You always feel the better from chatting with him. You know from past experience that he is the quintessential rogue of the highest order but a likeable rogue; he is the master of plámás this most charismatic icon of Irish sport. He certainly brightened up last Monday morning on this pre-Christmas visit. The beaming smile of recognition was as bright as ever from the 88-year-old. We had the usual chat about all aspects of sport, and he was in such an upbeat mood that I asked him if he felt up to another interview for On the Ball. He didn’t hesitate.

Off you go. You did plenty of interviews with me over the years. Are you still writing those sports columns for the Killarney Advertiser?

Yes, heading into 52 years of meeting such wonderful sports people as yourself. Where do the years go? Fire away. What do you want to talk about?

Your wonderful life in sport. You’re a great survivor Mick and I can tell you that you are looking so well now compared to my last visit. You have always been up for the challenges in life and seem so alert for an 88-year-old.

I’m coming to 89 next June. The three of us are close in age. Johnny (Culloty) will be 89 on New Year’s day. How’s he doing in Killarney? Connell (Micko) is younger than Johnny by a year, also born in January and I am in the middle.

Life is full of challenges and like everyone else, you faced them up. Like Jack Kennedy that great Dingle-born jockey who has suffered six leg breaks in his sporting career, you also broke legs. No only the same leg twice and that time sure they didn’t know as much as they know now so it took a full year before I got back playing.

That had to be your left leg. How do you know that?

Sure, you never kicked a score with your left leg. I know that for sure. You were centre forward for Waterville in those three county finals 1968, 1969 and 1970 and I was marking you in one of those finals. Donie O’Sullivan had

marked my card. All you have to do is shepherd him off to the left because he will keep angling to get a shot only with the right leg; he has no left leg. And wasn’t it a good right one that I could score with? You know of course that I am the top scorer for Kerry in the national leagues and I’d say that still stands.

And you were the top scorer in Ireland in one of those years. That’s fair going with one leg.

Of course, I had a great punch of a ball and fooled a lot of cornerbacks who were expecting me to shoot with my right foot.

It is true to say that you were very selfish and went for your own score. Why wouldn’t I, sure I knew I could score.

What many people do not realise is that you were powerfully built and could break through any tackle. And without charging. I was strong but the strongest player I knew was Long (Tom). God, he had a pair of shoulders on him that you couldn’t knock him off the ball.

Any other strong players you remember?

Egan (John) of course. Once he got the ball there was no way he would lose it. He was powerfully built, like a tank, but was so light on his feet he’d make a great dancer. He was also so skillful and could waltz his way around backs like the goal he got against Dublin that set us off on those great years winning All-Irelands. The other thing about Egan was that he was such a quiet fella but once he got the ball, he set up the play for Sheehy (Mikey), Powery and Spillane. He also has a powerful punch of a ball and tricked so many backs because he usually used his powerful left fist that codded them all.

Brian Mullins was another huge strong man with hands, more like shovels. I knew that when I shook hands with him.

Eoin Liston was a big find for you. Yes, big and strong was the Bomber who was too fond of the Mars bars instead of the Smarties. When he started teaching in Waterville V, S. my old school, he had a lot of extra pounds, but I kept after him, especially during the winter when the weighing scales went up and up. You had to get Bomber some way fit before you brought him into the Fitzgerald Stadium in March. The wire-to-wire sprints would be out of the question only for the preparation in Waterville. Of course, we often played golf which we both enjoyed.

What about the modern game that is such a turn-off for so many spectators? These are die-hard genuine followers, However, Jim Gavin and his committee have come up with several changes to the rules to address this. Do you think the new rules will work and improve the game.

We'll see.

That’s a very cautious answer, Mick. You don’t seem too convinced. Look, our game is called football, and the foot has been taken out of the game. Tell me a bit more about that. When I was a young fella growing up in Waterville, I spent so much of my time down on the field kicking the ball. Often, I was on my own but myself and Connell got together whenever we could, and we kept practising kicking the ball and that was the old ball that was like a bar of soap when it got soaked wet and became much heavier, so your boot had to strike the ball dead on. There isn’t just one way of kicking the ball. We’d be trying all kinds of kicking, pulling on the ball

on the ground, the ball off your hands and of course the drop kick. All that has changed. When did you last see a dropkick in football? No wonder it’s such a wonder now in rugby when an out-half drops the ball over the bar.

Are you interested in rugby?

I am interested in all sports. In fact, I am a sports’ fanatic and will follow all sports on the television.

I never drank or smoked but I was addicted to sport; it was an obsession. Football was what was there when I was growing up in Waterville so naturally, I went for that.

Of course, you have a splendid golf course in Waterville.

Unbelievable. No wonder all the Yanks come down to take it on. When the wind blows in from the Atlantic, the Wild Atlantic Way, only great players will score.

I’m told you were a handy golfer. Handy, is it? I loved it and of course, I had a very handy handicap.

The wink was unmistakable; no need for words with the wink and elbow language that was mutually deciphered. Let the rogue out to play.

I remember you as a very stylish wingback and also very good. Jackie Looney told me recently that you were so strong on the ball and would deliver a long accurate kick down to the forwards. He told me that in a Kerry County championship match he had scored 3 points in the first half at half forward but the South Kerry selectors moved you over on him for the second half and I didn't get one other score because you were so good and strong as well.

Jackie Looney was a great forward, very intelligent and a great scorer in every match. He is a great club man. Back to using your foot in football. No matter how fit or fast a player is in the modern game- and you must be an athlete now to compete at the highest levelno amount of inter-passing will get the ball into the scoring area as quickly and as effectively as the long accurate firsttime delivery.

You played corner forward just like David Clifford in the present Kerry team. I pity him, a great scorer, but if the team doesn’t get the ball in quickly to that area, he has no chance of controlling the end result. He must be frustrated. I would and so would Gleeson (Mick) and Higgins (Liam) from our time.

Of course, even with all your successes as a player and a manager, you had your disappointments. That’s life and sport is no different.

What were those disappointments that stand out?

1982 of course. We were in a commanding position with four points up in that second half well in control. We had done it all before, three in a row, four in a row and now five in a row, never done before. To cap it all Egan was captain, and no other player deserved it more to lift the Sam Maguire. You know the story. Painful. I was also very disappointed that Waterville did not win one of those three county finals. We worked so hard to win. We were well out of it in 1968 but ran a powerful East Kerry team very close in 1969 and 1970. Continue on

You made a massive contribution as manager of Kerry during the Golden Years and then ignited the hopes of other counties. The people of five counties will never forget what you did for them as a manager. Kerry, Kildare, Laois, Wicklow and Clare are eternally grateful to you. Why did you do it considering the long-haul journey from deep in south Kerry to faraway counties?

I loved the game and still do despite the way it has gone. I love meeting people and what football means to people in counties that rarely win any trophy or even matches is not fully understood in Kerry where we are so used to winning. Travel was never a problem for me. I loved driving and it was no bother for me to sit into the car in Waterville and head for Kildare or Wicklow day or night travelling on my own.

Most people would not like being in a car driving for five or six hours nonstop on their own.

I was always at top speed. You wouldn’t get away with it now. I loved being on my own. It was the only time I had the freedom to think things out. A lot goes through your mind on a journey of six hours without interruptions. Otherwise,

if I was in any place I would be wellknown and people would be coming up to me chatting and standing for photographs. I gave them all the time in the world; sure, I enjoy people

And that was one of your great gifts for successful management.

Yes, you must have people on your side or at least they think that you will be backing them as a team manager. It is very important to speak individually to the players, not the team talk in the dressing room on the day of the match because there is so much going on, but at all those training sessions, team holidays, funerals and so on. You will get the opportunity to build their confidence and in the heat of championship football they will be prepared to die for you. I hate to be critical of managers because it is a tough job especially here in Kerry where demands for Sam Maguire are great. Páidí O’Sé was correct in South Africa that time with Marty Morrissey about the Kerry supporters, even though I would have worded it differently.

Different style of management?

Chalk and cheese but we both had the good of Kerry football at heart. Páidí was a true Kerry warrior

I would say this much about some managers or team bosses, or whatever you call the person in charge. I hate to see good players who would not be on the starting 15 but are always in the subs, travelling all over the country and never getting even a chance to come on and play. Although I would not have that player starting, I would make sure that he was brought on for some occasions. If you are winning by a cricket score you know what the best players can do. You are not sure how good the weaker members of the panel are; you need to judge them and see how they go with the best players. You win both ways; You can now judge how good the sub is, and he is happy to go through the same slog of training as the rest. He is part of the team, and you have the chance to boost his confidence. Everyone needs that. Look at Ger Lynch, another player who never really got the credit he deserved. He was a sub for some time before he got his chance to show how good he was, skillful, and fast. There’s Ger Driscoll, another Valentia man who often played a blinder coming in sub.

A lot of controversy in the media in recent times about paying managers and of course, Mayo and Galway’s ac-

counts have not been signed off on. It seems Revenue is getting involved starting with payment to the referees (a mere 40 euros per game). Do you think that is just the thin edge of the hatchet?

When are you coming again and we’ll chat more?

Diplomacy is the art of dealing with people in a sensitive and tactful way. Mick O’Dwyer is the great diplomat in a lifetime of service to the GAA but he did it in his own way, people skills not learned in college but in the university of life. Diplomacy can also be seen as the art of letting other people have your own way. Mick O ‘Dwyer is perfect for a PhD study on that very theme.

Kilcummin GAA

O’SULLIVAN CUP SEMI-FINAL Dr Crokes 1-09 Kilcummin 1-10.

The cub qualified for the O’ Sullivan Cup final against Glenflesk with this hardfought victory over Dr Crokes in Lewis Rd. on Sunday last.

Points from Cian Lynch, Gavin Cronin, Mark O’ Shea and a Matt Keane free kept us in touch in a first half that was dominated by Crokes but quick thinking and a great strike by Matt Keane left us trailing by just two points at halftime 1-04 to 1-06.

The second half was fairly even early on with both sides trading points and spurning chances but it was our lads who finished the strongest, driven on by the ageless Shane McSweeney. Cian Lynch twice pointed from play while further scores from James Williams, Richie O’Connor, Matt Keane and a splendid effort from Padraic Moynihan saw us over the line by a single point.

Team Keith O’Leary, Jack Fogarty (Capt), Damien O’Leary, James Williams, Oisin O’Leary, Dara Stack, Gavin Morrissey, Shane McSweeney, Colm Kelleher, Cian Lynch, Matt Keane, Aaron Buckley, Padraic Moynihan, Mark O’ Shea, Gavin Cronin. Subs used Richie O’Connor and Darragh Brosnan.

Killarney Athletic

A Christmas message from the Chairman, I would like to extend warm Christmas wishes to everyone on behalf of Killarney Athletic AFC.

A big thank you to our dedicated staff maintaining our Woodlawn grounds, our coaches and their families, our committee and their families, and our generous sponsors whose support makes running the club possible.

Appreciation also goes out to our trustees, non-playing club members, supporters, and, of course, our players—from the Academy to the senior teams.

This year saw remarkable growth in our membership throughout the club, reflecting the continued enthusiasm and dedication of our players, coaches, and supporters. From new faces joining our ranks to the strengthening of our existing teams, it has been a year of progress and promise. This growth is a testament to the positive culture and community spirit that define Killarney Athletic AFC, and we look forward to building on this momentum in the year ahead.

As we reflect on the past year, our thoughts are with the club members and the broader soccer community we've lost.

Here's to a joyful Christmas and an even brighter 2025.

Nollaig Shona Daoibh go Léir.

Round 4 of the Munster Youths Cup

Killarney Athletic A.F.C 8-2 Waterford

Crystal FC Luke Doolan -5 Jack Rudden -2 Colin Looney -1

A great first-half performance today from the lads sealed our place in the quarter-final draw. Luke got us off the mark after 15 minutes and Jack followed suit shortly afterwards with a header from a corner. Luke hit another 4 before halftime in what was a ruthless display of finishing by him. Some days he is just unmarkable. 6-0 at halftime and, no matter what you say, there is always going to be a drop-off in the second half. Jack added a second soon after the restart to make it 7-0.

Credit to the Waterford lads, they never dropped their heads and were rewarded with 2 goals. Colin finished the scoring with a nice finish when put through oneon-one with the goalie.

Luke will get the headlines, and deservedly so, however, James Dempsey had a brilliant 90 minutes in the centre of the park. He’s a big player for this team and we’ll need more of the same to continue our run in the National and Munster Cup competitions.

Thanks to Waterford for a sporting game. They seem like a really decent club with good people involved. The game was played in good spirits throughout. We wish them all the best for the future.

Under 15 B

Castleisland 2 - 5 Killarney Athletic -Villa -2 Murphy -2 Constantin -1

The club travelled to Castleisland this morning and put in a really solid performance to come away with the points. Plenty of goals with Martin Villa's effort the pick of the bunch in a superb team display.

Notable mentions for Malcay Audley, Rob Murphy Martin Villa and the outstanding Constantin Preda in the middle of the park.

UNDER 13 A BOYS RESULT

Listowel Celtic A 0 - 8 Killarney Athletic A Artem Dzhandra -2 Leon Hebda -1 Sean Quill -1 Lucas Uchytil -3 Myron Svyripa -1

The boys travelled to Listowel today and played very well for a hard-earned victory against Listowel Celtic. The lads passed the ball around all day against a much bigger team. They started well and pressed hard all day to go up 4-0 at half. In the second half, they were against the wind and played some lovely football to finish strong with an emphatic 8-0 win.

Special mention to our three talented Under 12 players Trey Hurley, Ryan O’Donoghue and Darragh O’Toole who really played well for us today, they all contributed to our hard-fought win. Man of the match Leon Hebda.

UNDER 15 GIRLS

Killarney Athletic 3 MEK 1 Sophie O Shea -2 Lillian Slattery -1

The Under 15 girls welcomed MEK to Woodlawn today in what was a highly contested game with amazing quality from both teams, Athletic went one-nil up with a great solo goal from Sophie O’Shea beating three players in the box to get her first, in a game of high intensity with no quarter given, MEK got level with an outstanding header from a corner and the teams went in at half time level.

Athletic started the second half stronger after about 10 minutes Lillian Slattery got Athletic ahead again with a great finish from inside the box. Shortly after Sophie O Shea got her second to make it 3-1 another great finish inside the box. Both teams fought so hard for the rest of the game MEK were brilliant and nearly got back into the game on many occasions. But the girls fought hard and played some good football to hold on to

the win.

Thanks to MEK for a great game it really was a credit to girls' soccer it was amazing to see the quality and the hard work by both teams.

UNDER 14 GIRLS DIVISION 1

Killarney Athletic 1 - 3 Dingle

Killarney Athletic faced off against Dingle in a tightly contested match today. Athletic opened the scoring with a well-executed attacking move, finished expertly by Kaitlin Horgan. However, Dingle equalized before the halftime whistle, leaving the teams level at 1-1 going into the break.

Early in the second half, Dingle gained the upper hand with another goal, putting them ahead 2-1. Athletic responded strongly, dominating much of the second-half play and creating numerous attacking opportunities. Despite their sustained pressure, the equalizer remained elusive.

As Athletic pressed forward in search of a late goal, Dingle capitalized on a counter-attack to score a third, sealing the match. The game concluded with a 3-1 victory for Dingle, despite Athletic's spirited performance.

Girls Under 14 National Cup 4th Round GB Rovers 0-2 Killarney Athletic Lillian Slattery -2

The girls were away early in Glin County Limerick, a very competitive and close game with both sides having chances a battle ensued for 70 minutes and it was 0-0 at FT.

Extra time saw our girls really dig in and we got the breakthrough in the first half of extra time when Esme o Sullivan found Lillian Slattery with a lovely ball to her feet and Lillian spun and hit the back of the net with a super strike, then with two minutes left in extra time Ella Crowley beat two players down the right wing and cut the ball across the box for the on rushing Lillian who slotted her second of the game, well done to the entire panel today all 16 players played there part in a brilliant squad performance, we now look forward to the draw for the last 32 Thanks to GB Rovers for a sporting game and hospitality and wish them all the best for the season.
