The town has its own Christmas carol. ‘Christmas in Killarney’ featured on Bing Crosby’s 1951 album ‘Merry Christmas’, and Neil Diamond included the song in his ‘Acoustic Christmas’ album in 2016.
The 25,425-acre Killarney National Park was the country's rst National Park and was established in 1932. In 1981 Killarney National Park was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
The man who built Washington once lived in Killarney. Construction king John McShain’s company built, or was the prime contractor for, such landmark buildings as The Pentagon and parts of the White House. On retirement he lived in Killarney House, and when his wife died in 1998 his daughter gifted the property to the people of Ireland .
Killarney is home to Ireland’s highest mountain. The 1038.6 metre Carrauntoohil rises majestically over the town and its famous lakes.
