2022 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook | 3

Welcome to the 2022 season

W

elcome to the 2022 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook, a joint venture between the Wisconsin State Golf Association and Killarney Golf Media Inc. Wisconsin golf continues to enjoy a historic run. It began with a string of major championships. Along the way, Sand Valley put roots down in central Wisconsin and the hidden gem that was Wisconsin golf is hidden no longer. The spotlight on Wisconsin shined even brighter last year with the United States victory at the Ryder Cup led by captain Steve Stricker at Whistling Straits. If Wisconsin wasn’t on a golfers bucket list before, it’s high on the list now as the state has 10 top-100 public courses according to Golf Digest. There’s more excitement on the way as Sand Valley is close to unveiling The Lido, surely to be one of the most anticipated course openings in recent memory, and the state is preparing to host another run of major championships: •2 022 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Erin Hills (with Blue Mound G&CC serving as co-host) • 2023 U.S. Senior Open at SentryWorld • 2025 U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills But this publication is about more than just the big professional events in the state. Most of the pages are dedicated to the courses, players and amateur events that make Wisconsin special. The 2022 WSGA schedule again features top courses from around the state and events for players of all abilities. Competitive “net” events throughout the summer offer a great opportunity for the higher-handicap golfers to have fun and enjoy some competition. The crown jewel of the WSGA schedule, the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship sponsored by West Bend Mutual Insurance, will be played this year at Sand Valley in Nekoosa. Whether you are playing in the State Amateur or just out for a round with family and friends, be safe and be thankful for all the wonderful courses Wisconsin has to offer.

AMERICA’S BIRDIELAND: STATE’S STATUS AS TOP GOLF DESTINATION GROWS STRONGER BY GARY D’AMATO

W

hen it comes to top-ofmind golf destinations, Florida and Arizona have the weather, Hawaii has the scenery and Texas has land spreadin’ out far and wide. Oregon has Bandon Dunes, South Carolina has Myrtle Beach and Nevada has Las Vegas. Wisconsin has a disadvantage. It’s called winter. Never let it be said, though, that we don’t punch above our weight. Because when it comes to great public golf, we are the heavyweight champions. In Golf Digest’s 2021 ranking of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses,” Wisconsin dominates with seven courses in the top 50 and 10 in the top 100. California also has 10 in the top 100, but only four in the top 50. For perspective’s sake, Florida has seven in the top 100, North Carolina has six, South Carolina five, Hawaii four, Arizona one and Texas a big fat zero. Our Midwest neighbors – Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota – have a combined 13. Whether or not you put much stock in magazine rankings, it’s clear that Wisconsin is America’s Birdieland. Take it from Wisconsin Golf Trips owner Jason Kauflin, who puts together golf

packages for traveling golfers and has seen an explosion of interest in our state’s offerings. “When I first started (in 2015) and I got to meet those first groups that were doing the big-name courses, I think the attitude was that they felt like they knew something that everybody else didn’t know,” Kauflin said. “And now, six years later, if you haven’t been here, you’re on the outs. I’m sure people are like, ‘You haven’t been to Wisconsin and done all those courses?’ They look at you funny. “It’s really a complete shift in where we rank in the country and in the world. I think the secret definitely is out based on bookings I’ve had this year and moving forward.” Patrick Koenig, a golf course photographer from California who has played hundreds of courses around the world and interned with the Wisconsin State Golf Association last summer, said Wisconsin was unsurpassed when it came to public golf. The state’s rise to prominence has occurred over the last 35 years. Before Herbert V. Kohler Jr. opened the original 18 holes at Blackwolf Run in 1988 – and dared to charge the outrageous sum of $51 – public golf in Wisconsin

Blackwolf Run

The Bull at Pinehurst Farms

meant municipal courses and privately owned “town” courses that appealed to locals but rarely if ever drew golfers from outside the region. The Kohler Co. empire, which eventually consisted of two courses at Blackwolf Run and two more at Whistling Straits in the nearby Town of Haven, sparked a course-building boom that gave us The Bull at Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls, Erin Hills in the Town of Erin and two 18hole courses at the Sand Valley Resort in Adams County – all ranked among Golf Digest’s Top 100. In addition, venerable SentryWorld in Stevens Point (No. 50) and the Links Course at the Golf Courses of Lawsonia in Green Lake (No. 68) got

makeovers in recent years and are attracting national attention. “From my own life span – I’m a little over 50 years old – I can say going back to when I was playing competitive golf in my late teens and 20s, not a lot of people were thinking about Wisconsin as a golf destination,” said Michael Carbiener, the general manager at Sand Valley. “But the development that’s taken place over the past two or three decades is truly phenomenal. As you start to talk about the great golf destinations by region in the world – whether it’s the Scotland clusters or the Alabama golf trail – the state of Wisconsin now is right there in the conversation.” Of course, nothing shines a spotlight on a golf course like a major championship, and Wisconsin has had more than its share over the last 25 years. The run started with the wildly successful 1998 U.S. Women’s Open at Blackwolf Run and includes a U.S. Senior Open (2007, Whistling Straits), a second U.S. Women’s Open (2012,

Erin Hills

Blackwolf Run), a U.S. Amateur (2011, Erin Hills), a U.S. Open (2017, Erin Hills) and, most recently, the 43rd Ryder Cup at the Straits last September. Erin Hills is scheduled to host the U.S. Mid-Amateur in 2022 and the U.S. Women’s Open in 2025. SentryWorld gets the U.S. Senior Open in 2023. “It’s been an amazing time to be executive director of the WSGA, to see all of this happening and all the excitement the state has generated,” said Rob Jansen. “To be able to play a small role in it and be a part of some of the events that have come to Wisconsin, working with all of the courses from a tourism and marketing standpoint, it’s been an unbelievable experience for me and one I’m thankful to be a part of and see all this unfold.” World-class golf in Wisconsin is easily accessible from airports in Milwaukee, Chicago and Minneapolis. It’s not uncommon for traveling golfers to include a handful of courses on their

itineraries. If they have an extra day or two, they can play top-notch public facilities in Lake Geneva (Geneva National, Grand Geneva), Madison (University Ridge), Green Bay (Brown County) or Milwaukee (Brown Deer). “When we have visitors at Sand Valley, they say things like, ‘I’m coming from …’ fill in the blank,” Carbiener said. “They’ve already been in Wisconsin for three or four days and they’ve played Kohler, Erin Hills, Lawsonia. Or vice versa – they’re leaving Sand Valley and they’re saying, ‘Now we’re on to Lawsonia, Kohler, Erin Hills, SentryWorld.’ I think that’s great. It lends even more credibility to all the wonderful assets that the state has. “And the beautiful thing is that all those courses are uniquely different.” The geography in our state – from the Kettle Moraine to the central Wisconsin sand barrens to bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan to old-growth forests – ensures the kind of variety that 2022 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook | 11

It’s been quite a run. And it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. “Wisconsin has become a golf destination and it’s hard to believe that because we are in the snow five or six months out of the year,” said Madison’s Steve Stricker, a 12-time winner on the PGA Tour and the 2021 U.S. Ryder Cup team captain. “It’s really cool to see.” 12 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin

IN RYDER CUP’S WAKE STATE PREPARES FOR MORE Wisconsin may be coming off the high of playing host to the 43rd Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits last fall, but the state isn’t ready to concede its position as the home of championship golf. Over the next four years, the United States Golf Association will bring three of its championships to Wisconsin, extending a run that Blue Mound G&CC started with the 1998 U.S. Women’s Open and included the U.S. Senior Open (2007), the U.S. Amateur (2011) and the U.S. Open (2017). First up is the 2022 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, to be contested Sept. 10-15, with stroke play qualifying at Erin Hills and Blue Mound Golf & Country Club, followed by match play at Erin Hills. The Mid-Am is the national championship for golfers ages 25 and over and was last held in Wisconsin in 2007, when Steve Wilson won the title at Milwaukee Country Club. Bill McCarthy, championship director of the U.S. Mid-Amateur, calls it “our true amateur championship” because most competitors have jobs and careers and many have families, yet they are still able to play golf at an elite level. Stewart Hagestad of Newport Beach, Calif., claimed his second U.S. Mid-Amamateur title last year. One year after the Mid-Am, the USGA will bring the 2023 U.S. Senior Open to SentryWorld in Stevens Point. The upscale public facility, owned by Sentry Insurance, played host to a successful 2019 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship won by China’s Lei Ye. Since then, SentryWorld has undergone a renovation to prepare the course for the Senior Open. A boutique hotel, built adjacent to the 18th fairway, is scheduled to open this year. Steve Stricker of Madison, the 2019 U.S. Senior Open champion and 2021 U.S. Ryder Cup captain, is expected to tee it up at SentryWorld, where he won a WIAA state title in 1984. “To be a former (Senior Open) champion and to be here in my home state where I won the state high school championship is really cool,” Stricker said. “Wow, it’s come full circle.” In 2025, the U.S. Women’s Open will return to Wisconsin for the third time in 27 years, this time at Erin Hills. The landmark 1998 Women’s Open, won by Se Ri Pak in a playoff over amateur Jenny Chuasiriporn, was held at Blackwolf Run, as was the 2012 championship, won by Na Yeon Choi. Though currently there are no USGA championships scheduled to be held in Wisconsin after 2025, it’s almost a certainty that the state’s run of significant events will continue far into the future. “It all starts for any of our championships with the golf course,” said John Bodenhamer, senior managing director of championships for the USGA. “Wisconsin has a lot of great championship golf courses and resorts. And it also goes to an enthusiastic golf population that really loves the game and comes out to watch. That is so prevalent in the Midwest – a welcoming atmosphere that, wherever we go, whether it’s Erin Hills or SentryWorld or Whistling Straits or Blackwolf Run or you can even add now Sand Valley, you just feel that warm Midwest welcome. “We’re blessed to be invited by our country’s greatest golf courses and facilities. But I think we do feel a special sense of welcoming attitude (in Wisconsin). And I’d also say, you look at all those facilities and they’re all supportive of the WSGA, too. That is not lost on us because part of our mission is to further the game, not just with championships but in other ways.”

JERRY ROSSI

golfers crave. And we’re not resting on our laurels. SentryWorld was closed for all of 2020 and 2021 and was renovated for the 2023 U.S. Senior Open. When it reopens in 2022, tee times will be spaced at 20 minutes and the green fee of $275 will include unlimited food and drink at concession stands. Sand Valley Resort, which will play host to the 2022 State Amateur on the Sand Valley and Mammoth Dunes courses, is building The Lido, a private club modeled to the linear foot after a fabled “lost” course in New Jersey. It’s a project that already has drawn considerable national attention. Kohler Co. has plans in place for a fifth course on land the company owns a few miles south of Whistling Straits, also on bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. Cherokee County Club in Madison is in the early stages of a transformation, while Abbey Springs in Fontana and Brown County in Hobart underwent extensive renovations last year. Also in 2021, three short courses opened: 12North at Trappers Turn in Wisconsin Dells, The Baths of Blackwolf Run in Kohler and Pioneer Pointe in Middleton. Glenway Golf Course in Madison is getting a facelift and is scheduled to reopen in 2022 as Glenway Golf Park.

SAND VALLEY TO THROW A POTENT ONE-TWO PUNCH AT STATE AM FIELD BY GARY D’AMATO

G

olfers who qualify for the 2022 Wisconsin State Amateur Championship are in for a treat. The first-time host venue, Sand Valley Resort in Adams County, has earned national acclaim for its linksy, windswept courses that sprawl over hundreds of acres of sand barrens and heathland. The landscape is stark but beautiful, and the views from elevated tees are breathtaking. There’s no other place quite like it in Wisconsin, and few that compare anywhere. What’s more, the field of 156 will get to play both the Sand Valley and Mammoth Dunes courses. For the first time in the 121-year history of the State Am, more than one course will be used. The first round will be held on Sand Valley, designed by the team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and opened in 2017. The second round will be held on Mammoth Dunes, designed by David McLay Kidd and opened in 2018. After the 36-hole cut, the final two rounds will be held on Sand Valley. “I talked to quite a few players who were excited about the State Am being there and wondering which course or courses we’re going to play,” said Rob Jansen, executive director of the Wisconsin State Golf Association. “Pretty much every one of them said that they’d love the chance to play both courses while they were up

14 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin

there. The resort was receptive to it, so it seemed like a winning combination. “I think it’s going to be one of the more unique State Amateurs because of the two-course format. I think it’s going to be one of the most fun State Amateurs we’ve ever done, as well.” Last year, Piercen Hunt of Hartland ran away to a six-stroke victory at Westmoor Country Club. Then a rising sophomore at the University of Illinois, Hunt totaled 1-under 279. In 2020, Thomas Longbella of Chippewa Falls shot 6-under 274 at Milwaukee Country Club and won by 10. Sand Valley will present different challenges than the ones golfers faced at Milwaukee CC and Westmoor. The fairway turf is fescue rather than bentgrass, wind is a bigger factor on the mostly treeless terrain and sand – in many forms – is a dominant feature throughout. There are enormous blowouts and waste areas, cross bunkers and cavernous greenside bunkers. “The sand is paramount,” said Adam Miller of Nekoosa, who finished T-2 in the 2021 State Am and has caddied at Sand Valley since it opened. “There is so much of it. You are rolling the dice if you’re going to get a lie you can get a clean strike out of. That can cause a lot of unique interactions, where you’re not going to get a clean strike on that

Sand Valley

ball, and who knows where it can go from there.” Because the turf is sand-based and firm, golfers who hope to play well will have to account for roll-out in the fairways and be able to judge what their ball will do after it hits the ground. In that regard, the courses at Sand Valley play a bit like Erin Hills, site of the 2015 State Amateur, and The Club at Strawberry Creek in Kenosha, site of the 2012 State Am. Relatively few players in the 2022 field, however, will have played in those championships. “The first thing that comes immediately to mind is that there’s not a lot of true links golf in Wisconsin, where courses are designed on sand to be played firm, to be played fast, and many times for the ball to be played on the ground,” said Michael Carbiener, the general manager at Sand Valley. “I think that’s going to be an adjustment for a lot of the competitors, because they’re not frequently faced with that when playing golf in Wisconsin, and certainly not tournament golf in Wisconsin.” Said Miller, “It’s a different style of golf. It’s a different type of fairway than what you’re used to in Wisconsin golf. It’s a little thinner, a little tighter. The style around the greens is much different than what you would expect anywhere else in Wisconsin, in terms

of how you approach shots around the greens.” Of the two courses, Mammoth Dunes is likely to produce the lower scores. The course features extra-wide fairways – in some cases 100 yards across – and massive, rolling green complexes. Kidd said he designed the course so that the 15-handicap golfer would not lose a golf ball and would make a few pars. From the tips, Mammoth Dunes measures 6,988 yards on the scorecard, but Miller said it can be stretched well beyond 7,000. “Mammoth Dunes, I think that’s your round to go as low as you can,” he said. “It depends on how far they stretch it out, but I think Mammoth will be the round where you want to get a good, low round in, because that opportunity is there.” Sand Valley probably is the more demanding of the two courses, with a bigger emphasis on shot-making and precision with irons. The fairways are generous, but the landing areas are not as wide as those on Mammoth Dunes. Over the last 10 years, the average winning score in the State Amateur has been 3.5 strokes under par, and on five occasions fewer than three golfers finished under par for 72 holes. Twice, the winning score has been over par. One factor that could impact scoring is the departure last summer of Bill Linneman, the longtime director of rules and competitions for the WSGA and the man responsible for the State

Amateur course set-up. Geoff Pirkl, the former assistant director of rules and competitions, has been promoted and now will be in charge of the set-up. Sand Valley was built for retail golf, but Jansen and Miller think the courses will hold up well. “They are two great golf courses that are not only fun to play but I think can also be set up to challenge the top players and make sure we’re identifying the best player in the field, which is always the goal,” Jansen said. “I have no doubt we’ll be able to create a set-up that will do that.” Said Miller, “Knowing the history of the WSGA, they take pride in making their courses a challenge for the players. They definitely don’t want to have the type of scores that you would see at other tournaments like, for example, the Ray Fischer, where the winner is routinely 20-under par. I don’t think they want to have that type of scoring for the State Amateur.” Given his familiarity with the courses and his recent form, Miller certainly will be among the handful of favorites. The left-hander was the 2021 WSGA Player of the Year, posting top-five finishes in the Ray Fischer, State Amateur and State Open. “I would have to assume so,” he said. “It’s just knowledge that comes from seeing the course. But that doesn’t mean anything come game day, really. You still have to go out there and play your game and hit your shots. You can have a good day or a bad day, no matter how much experience you have on a course. You still have to get the ball in the hole.” Sand Valley has hosted the Wisconsin State Par 3 Championship on the Sandbox, the resort’s 17-hole short course, since 2018, but the State Amateur will be the first “major” amateur event at the resort. “I think it’s critically important (to host events),” Carbiener said. “We want to be a good partner with the state organization, and we want the best players to compete at our facility. It’s a big honor, actually, and I think it’s great that it rotates around the state. We’re thrilled that it’s with us in 2022.” 2022 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook | 15

A THREE-PEAT AT AMFAM CHAMPIONSHIP WOULD BE VINTAGE KELLY

fter a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Family Insurance Championship returned to PGA Tour Champions schedule in 2021 and one golfer in the field went out of his way to show his appreciation to tournament host Steve Stricker. “I got a gift in my locker … a bottle of wine,” Stricker said on the eve of the fifth AmFam Championship. “Somebody gave me a bottle of wine for putting on a tournament.” Stricker didn’t divulge the name of the donor, so we’ll never know if it came from fellow Madison golfer Jerry Kelly, who once told an interviewer that he has “a couple hundred” bottles in a wine cellar of his Maple Bluff home that “can probably hold 1,800 to 2,000.” Then again, Kelly doesn’t usually uncork wine bottles as much at the start of AmFam week as he does at the end. And why not? His hometown tournament has given Kelly plenty of reason to celebrate, most recently as the first to successfully defend an AmFam title. Kelly’s quest to become the first to win three straight championships at the same PGA Tour Champions event since Bernhard Langer at the 2016 Senior Players Championship will be one of the leading storylines heading into the sixth AmFam Championship, scheduled for June 10-12 at University Ridge Golf Course. Another is the likelihood that the 2022 AmFam Championship will be the first since

2019 to be played without restrictions on gallery size. “We are certainly planning for a full-scale event,” AmFam tournament director Nate Pokrass said during an early January interview, even as the Omicron variant of the coronavirus was causing concern among health officials and scheduling adjustments for a handful of events. “As we did last year, we’ll pivot and adjust to the current environment.” The UW Carbone Race for Research, described as a family-friendly 5K run/ walk to raise money for the UW Carbone Cancer Center, will return June 4. The popular Friday evening concert at Breese Stevens Field and Saturday celebrity foursome, both canceled a year ago due to COVID-19 restrictions in Dane County, will also be back. This year’s concert features Lady A with Boyz II Men and Edwin McCain being the opening acts. After those restrictions also limited daily attendance at the 2021 AmFam Championship to about 5,000 fans, Pokrass is looking forward to the return of the robust galleries that have helped the tournament raise more than $12 million for local charities since 2016. He said tournament officials will be ready for them with the usual assortment of viewing amenities. “It’s going to be awesome; I’m excited for that one again,” said Kelly, whose photo with 30 family members and friends after the awards ceremony

remains one of his favorite memories of his 2021 victory. “The first one was incredible, but that one – with everybody back there – was pretty cool.” Pokrass, meanwhile, is excited by the prospects of restoring all that was cool about the AmFam Championship before COVID-19 protocols led to the 2020 cancellation and 2021 modifications. “We’ll have more hospitality venues on (No.) 17 so we’re intending to fully horseshoe the 17th green and (No.) 18 will continue to remain fully enclosed as well,” Pokrass said. “To have the environment not only on those two holes, but … the (spectating) venues on 15 tee, 14 green and first tee for all fans to be able to sit and watch, our intent is to bring those back, which is in the hands of the environment. Being an outdoor event, like Badger football or Packer football, is certainly advantageous for us. We’re going to work at it. … We were able to run a great event here in 2021 and we certainly feel we can run a great event here coming up in June.” Pokrass laughed when it was suggested that Kelly is counting on it. “I think Jerry has University Ridge figured out, which is great,” Pokrass said. “It’s exciting. We love having our hometown guy win the tournament. He is the one to beat; there’s no doubt about it. But 77 other players are certainly going to give it a shot in June and we know Steve will be hungry, too.”

EXPANDED FORMATS HIGHLIGHT WOMEN’S AM, OPEN IN 2022 BY ROB HERNANDEZ

I

f for no reason other than karma, Milton’s Mia Seeman was thrilled to hear the Wisconsin Women’s State Open will return to the Golf Courses of Lawsonia in Green Lake in 2022. The reigning champion also applauded the move to expand the championship to 54 holes. “I think expanding the State Open to 54 holes is a good idea because almost all college events are 54 holes,” said Seeman, who is in her fourth season at South Dakota State. Shifting the Women’s State Open from the Links Course – where Seeman edged Grace Suter of Oconomowoc in a two-hole playoff in 2021 – to the adjacent Woodlands Course for the 2022 Women’s State Open is just one unique wrinkle to the women’s golf schedule this year. Adding a third day to a championship that has traditionally been completed in two is perhaps the most significant change to what is annually the signature event on the Wisconsin women’s golf calendar. It also reflects an administrative trend in women’s golf heading into 2022 with the Wisconsin Women’s State Amateur, to be held July 12-13 at West Bend Country Club, returning to a 54-hole format that includes a 36hole opening day for golfers competing in championship flight. “I’d personally thought about it a little bit, but not much,” WPGA executive director Joe Stadler said of the Women’s State Open expansion. “I’m like ‘Well, I don’t know.’ Had never really talked to anybody about it. But (during the 2021 championship) I had like five different participants ask me about it. The reason they stated was, first of all, they’d like to play a 54-hole championship and, secondly, on the amateur side, an event like that has to be 54 holes in order to get World Amateur Golf Ranking points, which I didn’t even know because it’s not a world I deal with.” With nearly 200 Wisconsin natives

competing in women’s college golf and dozens more high schoolers looking to test their games against older golfers and tougher set-ups, interest in the top women’s championships continues to gain. Over the last five years, participation in the Wisconsin Women’s State Amateur has jumped from 27 golfers in 2017 to 58 in 2021 while championship flight for the WSGA Women’s State Match Play has grown from 16 to 29. In addition to restoring the 54-hole format for the Women’s State Am in July, the WSGA is taking it to West Bend Country Club – a 94-year-old Langford and Moreau classic that will play host to the men’s State Amateur in 2026. Tournament manager Thomas Fazio, who administers the women’s championships for the WSGA, also hopes to see the field size for the Women’s State Match Play grow for the third year in a row by taking it to Watertown Country Club. “When we took over (administration of) the tournaments, we could kind of tell that women’s amateur golf in Wisconsin was pretty dominated by the senior players,” said Fazio, pointing to the support of Women’s State Am sponsor West Bend Insurance – the long-time sponsor of the Men’s State Amateur – has helped make the women’s events stronger. The rest of the 2022 WSGA women’s schedule isn’t too shabby, either. The Women’s State Four-Ball Championship, which expanded to a 36-hole event in 2021, will be played July 5-6 at La Crosse Country Club in Onalaska and two other team events – the State Women’s Scramble (Aug. 14) and the Patti Pelischek Solheim Cup (Aug. 21) – will be contested on consecutive Saturdays in August. The Women’s Senior Am is June 20-21 at Reedsburg Country Club and the Women’s Senior Four-Ball is Sept. 18-19 at Lawsonia’s Woodlands Course.

Mia Seeman

‘SCRAMBLE’ IS ON FOR WOMEN

One year after replacing its Women’s State Mid-Amateur Championship with a Women’s State Scramble Championship that featured a full field, the WSGA is looking to develop the same following by re-branding its Member Series events into the WSGA Scramble Series. Assistant director Thomas Fazio said the WSGA will model the Scramble Series after its Net Partners series. Men and women alike will have the chance to play in six Scramble Series events at courses such as The Meadow Valleys Course at Blackwolf Run, The Bog and The Club at Strawberry Creek with the top finishers at each stop qualifying for the Scramble Series Championship, to be played Sept. 14 at Wild Rock Golf Club in Wisconsin Dells. “Two or three years ago, each of our Member Series (events) was a different format,” Fazio said. “One was a four-ball. One was a two-person scramble. Last year, we converted them all to two-person scrambles. … And those are extremely popular. We love our premier events, the State Am and the State Match Play, but there is such a demand for all of these different styles.”

STATE OPEN HISTORY COULD BE IN THE MAKING AT TRADITION-RICH OZAUKEE CC BY ROB HERNANDEZ

W

ith a canopy of trees guarding the left side of the fairway, forcing golfers to take dead aim at the out-of-bounds that is adjacent to North River Road and shape their first shot of the day from right-to-left away from it, the first tee at Ozaukee Country Club in Mequon offers a daunting visual for golfers of any age, let alone a 15-year-old playing his first major championship. Welcome to Harrison Ott’s world, circa July 21, 2014. Then a sophomore at Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, Ott remembers the feeling of being on top of the junior golf world as he prepared to tee it up in the Wisconsin State Amateur. He was coming off back-to-back wins on the American Junior Golf Association Tour, the latter coming at the Legend at Brandybrook in Wales three days after winning the last of nine State Amateur qualifiers held around the state with a 2-underpar 69 at Watertown Country Club. “I remember being really nervous on No. 1,” Ott said of his State Am debut. “College coaches had driven from other states to watch me and that kind of threw me off. I’m like ‘Wait a minute.’ “That kind of made me a little more nervous. You’re (competing at) home and you might see (coaches from) Wisconsin and Marquette, but there were like four on the first tee. … I vividly remember that Purdue kind of threw me off. I’m like ‘OK, they came pretty

20 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin

far for this.” “That first tee … might have been the very moment when things changed.” Indeed, if there was a starting line to a journey that will return Ott to the first tee at Ozaukee CC come mid-August as the two-time defending Wisconsin State Open champion, that was it. Ott didn’t come close to winning the 2014 State Am that week; he shot 7779 and missed the 36-hole cut. But he realized the great potential golf had for him and that he had for the game. “I’m like ‘OK, I like playing golf; golf can take me places,’” Ott said. Chasing destiny amid history Golf has taken Ott from Milwaukee Marquette to Vanderbilt University to the doorstep of State Open history and there couldn’t be a more appropriate place to chase it than Ozaukee CC as the Brookfield native – the 13th golfer to win back-to-back State Opens (two have done it twice) – tries to become the first golfer in the event’s 102-year history to win it three years in a row. The venerable Mequon club is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2022 by hosting the State Open for the first time since 1968. That year, legendary Milwaukee Country Club head professional Manuel de la Torre won his record-tying fifth State Open by four strokes over future two-time U.S. Open champion Andy North, then

an 18-year-old amateur from Monona, after third-round leader Jeff Radder, 19, of Madison had been disqualified for having used an illegal putter. One of the three other five-time State Open champions, Bob Brue, was a fixture at Ozaukee CC. Brue spent 22 years as the head professional at the club before qualifying for what is now the PGA Tour Champions and handing the reins over to another familiar face in the golf shop – Rich Tock, who spent 20 years at Ozaukee before taking a position on the staff at Erin Hills. “Ozaukee is rich in its history not only as a great club from a golf standpoint, but a long history of great golf professionals who were pretty darn good golfers; guys like Bobby Brue and Rich Tock were two of the best when it came to that,” said Jason Rasmussen, in his fifth year as head professional at Ozaukee, which hasn’t played host to an in-state major since the 2014 State Am. “We’re trying to hit home on the

‘culture’ of our club, which is based around golf. We’re a great club with its family aspect, but golf is what is the main driving factor at Ozaukee CC. What better way than to have the biggest event in the state of Wisconsin … here.” Rasmussen, who was the host professional for the State Open in 2017 at North Shore Country Club in Mequon, made it a point of emphasis for Ozaukee’s centennial to host the State Open after becoming the head pro in 2018. The 2022 State Open was originally assigned to SentryWorld in Stevens Point, which has been closed for two years in preparation to host the 2023 U.S. Senior Open and will now host the Wisconsin State Open six weeks after the Senior Open as well. “They wanted to host a significant event on their anniversary,” Wisconsin PGA executive director Joe Stadler said. “We asked SentryWorld to flip a year to accommodate that. We haven’t been to Ozaukee for this event since 1968. It was overdue – 54 years to play one of the better golf courses in the state. … They had approached us and we were thrilled to have them.” Ott welcomes Ozaukee’s challenge Ozaukee CC is the latest Milwaukee-area classic to host a state major, joining Milwaukee CC (2019 State Am), Blue Mound Golf & Country Club (2020 State Open) and Westmoor Country Club (2021 State Am) and Stadler warned that it promises to be every bit as challenging as the other three. “The green complexes at these 100-year-old courses can be so difficult and so demanding,” said Stadler, who walked the final round of the 2014 State Am when Lake Geneva’s Alex Gaugert – now a PGA Tour caddie for former University of Minnesota teammate Erik von Rooyen – shot a final-round 68 to win with a 6-over-par 286. “You throw a little bit of rough in there and some firmness, you can set it up as hard as you want. We set Blue Mound up pretty difficult and Harrison Ott still shot 10-under, though there weren’t many people (five) under par. “The challenge at Ozaukee, from a course set-up standpoint, will be (finding)

four hole locations on some of the greens. The par-3 (ninth). Or No. 8 (a long par 4). They’re challenging greens, especially if they are at speeds that are anticipated.” Rasmussen agreed with Stadler’s assessment, saying the greens roll at a 12 or 13 for Ozaukee’s annual Member-Guest tournament in July and could be faster in August for the State Open. But Rasmussen went on to say that will be just a small part of the challenge for the 156-golfer field.

Ozaukee is rich in its history not only as a great club from a golf stand- point, but a long history of great golf professionals who were pretty darn good golfers …” – JASON RASMUSSEN

“Ultimately, it comes down to course knowledge and where you can position (yourself) for your second shot,” Rasmussen said. “I think the person who gets penalized the most is the one who really tries to overpower the course. It’s not the longest golf course and you can take advantage if you’re hitting it straight. If you’re not and you get a little squirrely, you can really get behind a lot of trees and it takes those birdie opportunities that are few and far between out of play.” The last time Ott played a major at Ozaukee CC, that might have been an issue. But now? “It’s funny; now, that’s the golf I appreciate,” said Ott, who won his first two State Opens as an amateur – the first since Ozaukee’s Brue in 1959 to win back-to-back as an amateur – but will likely have turned professional by the time he gets to the first tee at Ozaukee in mid-August. “I’d still go to Sand Valley. I love playing there with my buddies. And I love Erin Hills; it’s one of my favorite courses. But I love the tightish (treelined) country club that has a cool feel around the clubhouse and members that take huge pride in it. I like that type of golf. Running shots up. Big breaking putts. Back then, it was a nuisance for me, but now I like it.” 2022 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook | 21

BUSTLING JUNIOR GOLF PROGRAMS OPENING DOORS FOR MANY BY ROB HERNANDEZ

N

early 600 boys and more than 200 girls competed in events on the Wisconsin PGA Junior Tour during 2021. For some, it was their first taste of competitive golf. For others, the series of one-day tournaments – there were 44 of them between mid-June and late August – provided a bridge to the 36and 54-hole events that have become so critical for those hoping to catch the eye of college coaches. In all cases, they provided opportunities to chase bigger dreams down the road. This past fall WPGA officials analyzed the correlation between girls golfers who competed in WPGA Junior events and their performance at the WIAA Division 1 state tournament. They sought to illustrate the importance of girls competing in WPGA Junior events early in their careers as well as the importance of staying sharp while in high school ahead of the fall WIAA season. They found that girls who finished in the top 16 at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona averaged 8.67 WPGA starts in 2021 and 10.22 per year going back as many as eight years with Brookfield East’s Madison Haugen logging the most starts (129 over the past eight years) and Waunakee’s Izzi Stricker competing in the fewest (15 in the last four). That compared to 8.41 in 2021 and 8.63 overall among golfers who finished in the top 30 and 7.0 and 7.88 among all WPGA Junior members who qualified for state in Division 1. In addition, they found that golfers on Westosha Central and Sussex Hamilton, which finished 1-2 in Division 1 team standings, averaged 7.2 starts in 2021 and 6.92 starts overall. “Just about every girl (in the top 16) committed to playing a heavy summer

schedule (in 2021),” said Ed Swab, junior golf coordinator under WPGA junior golf director Andy Landenberger, who led the study. “I think that’s where all their growth came from.” Junior golfers will have ample opportunity to grow their games again in 2022. There were already 40 Junior Tour events on the schedule when it was unveiled in late December on top of the usual assortment of multi-day events that have provided generations of juniors with resume material. Here is a look at 2022 tournament options grouped for beginning, intermediate and advanced junior golfers: Where to start The Wisconsin PGA offers a Future Tour that featured 20 events statewide plus the Future Tour Invitational during 2021 for golfers aged 7 to 14. Most are nine-hole events, including several on executive or par-3 courses, that are designed to introduce golfers to the rules and procedures of tournament golf. For those looking for opportunities closer to home, the WPGA partners with regional par-3 tours in the Milwaukee, Madison, Wisconsin Dells and Fox Valley areas. Where to go next The WPGA Junior Tour is the next stop on the junior golf journey. From time-honored munis such as Reid Golf Course in Appleton, Odana Hills Golf Course in Madison and Riverside Golf Course in Janesville to some of the state’s top courses like University Ridge in Madison, the Irish Course at Whistling Straits in Haven and a host of private facilities, this 18-hole circuit showcases courses that offer a wide range of difficulty. A separate tour highlighting Milwaukee County courses is also an option.

Kaeden Nomm - 2021 WSGA junior boys champion

Where it all leads Many junior golfers reach a point when their schedules are filled exclusively with multi-day events. For boys, the WSGA Junior Boys – a 54-hole stroke-play event – and Wisconsin Junior Masters, a week-long stroke play-to-match play event at Johnson Park Golf Course in Racine are two of the most established tournaments on the summer schedule. For girls, the WSGA/WPGA Junior Girls – a three-day match-play championship at Hartford Golf Club – and two-day Sherri Steinhauer in the Madison area have become staples on the annual calendar. Golfers of both genders are showcased at a series of 36-hole events including the WPGA Championship, the Dells Junior Championship, the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin College Showcase, the Morgan Stanley Tour Championship and the Lake Arrowhead Invitational and a handful of events on the WPGA Players Tour. Juniors looking to make the jump from high school to college golf are often enticed to register for (women) or qualify for (men) the Wisconsin State Amateur and Wisconsin State Open championships.

Come for the golf, stay for the craft beer. Spend the day on the course, from the beautiful & challenging SentryWorld Golf Course to the waterfront views of the Wisconsin River Golf Club. Then, head out for local flavor, with tours (& a taste) of craft beer, wine, and spirits of the Central Wisconsin Craft Collective.

MURANYI, REINHART JOIN HALL

M

BY GARY D’AMATO

ike Muranyi, who compiled an impressive record as a tournament competitor, and Jim Reinhart, whose administrative skills took him to the United States Golf Association’s Executive Committee and beyond, are the newest members of the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame. They were formally inducted in a well-attended ceremony at Milwaukee Country Club last October, becoming the 97th and 98th members of the Hall, which dates to 1964. Muranyi, a native of Buffalo, N.Y., was the popular head PGA professional at Monroe Country Club from 1980 until his retirement in 2009. For more than two decades, he was one of the top players in the Wisconsin PGA Section. He won the WPGA Assistant Professional title in 1978, the Wisconsin State Open in 1983 and the Wisconsin State Senior Open in 2003. He also was the Section’s match play champion in 1998 and its senior stroke play champion in 2001. Muranyi qualified for the Greater Milwaukee Open seven times and was a 24-time participant in the Nelthorpe Cup. When asked about his greatest source of pride as a player, Muranyi pointed to his longevity. “I would think it’s staying competitive for as many years as I have,” he said. “I won the assistants championship at Milwaukee Country Club in the ‘70s. To go on and win the State Open and the (WPGA) Match Play … and then to win the senior stuff, too, is pretty cool.” Muranyi also gave back to the game over his long and distinguished career. He was the WPGA president in 1993-’94, a board member for 14 years, coached the Monroe High School golf team for 11 years and founded the Mike Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation in 2009. Reinhart, born in Shell Lake, fell in love with golf at an early age and became a fine player with a single-digit handicap. He joked during his acceptance speech that he thought he was being inducted as a player

Mike Muranyi, left, and Jim Reinhart

after winning the Milwaukee Country Club Member-Member tournament with his son, Alex. But Reinhart made his mark as an administrator. He served on the USGA Executive Committee from 2001-’07, was chairperson of the rules and finance committees, achieved expert certification in the Rules of Golf and rose to USGA vice president in 2006-’07. His USGA connections helped Erin Hills land the U.S. Amateur in 2011 and the U.S. Open in 2017, and he served as general chairperson of both championships. He also has been a member of the Masters Tournament Committee since 2001 and has been chairman of the Cup & Tee Placement Committee since 2017. At the state level, Reinhart has been a Wisconsin State Golf Association director since 2000, a WSGA Foundation director since 2013 and a member of the WSGA Rules Committee since 2002. He served as president of the organization in 2013-’14. “I’ve been very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time and do some things in golf that in my wildest dreams I never would have imagined,” he said. “To be recognized in this way is very flattering, but you’re being recognized for doing something that you’re incredibly passionate about and really fortunate to do. So many others I know that love golf would love to do some of the same things. “So, I don’t take it for granted. I just realize how fortunate I’ve been.” 2022 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook | 51

Crafted by Mother Nature. Shaped by Champions. Trappers Turn features three unique but complementing championship 9-hole courses, a putting course, and a Par-3 experience designed by two-time U.S. Open Champion Andy North.
