Welcome to the 2023 season

elcome to the 2023 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook, a joint venture between the Wisconsin State Golf Association and Killarney Golf Media Inc. Wisconsin is poised for another big golf year in 2023. The best seniors in the world will be in Wisconsin twice this summer. First for the American Family Insurance Championship

June 9-11 at University Ridge Golf Course near Madison and then a few weeks later for the U.S. Senior Open at SentryWorld in Stevens Point June 29–July 2. Make sure to mark your calendars and support both events so we can keep Wisconsin’s major momentum going.

The crown jewel of the WSGA schedule, the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship sponsored by West Bend Mutual Insurance, will be played this year at Erin Hills. Erin Hills last hosted the State Amateur in 2015 – two years prior to hosting the U.S. Open. This year’s State Amateur happens to come two years prior to Erin Hills hosting its next major – the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open.

But this publication is about more than just the big professional events. Most of the pages are dedicated to the courses, players and amateur events that make Wisconsin special. The 2023 WSGA schedule again features top courses from around the state and events for players of all abilities. Competitive “net” events throughout the summer offer a great opportunity for the higher-handicap golfers to have fun and enjoy some competition.

And if Wisconsin wasn’t on a golfer’s bucket list before, it’s high on the list now as the state has 10 top-100 public courses, according to Golf Digest. There’s more excitement on the way as Sand Valley officially opens The Lido in 2023, surely to be one of the most anticipated course openings in recent memory. That’s not the only exciting news from Sand Valley as their next resort course, Sedge Valley, is coming along nicely and will be open for preview play later in the year.

WISCONSIN TO BASK IN ITS ‘SENIOR MOMENTS’ THIS SUMMER

all it the Wisconsin Senior Slam.

The best golfers in the world ages 50 and older will visit America’s Birdieland not once but twice in a three-week span in 2023.

First, the PGA Tour Champions will make its seventh stop in Madison for the American Family Championship, June 9-11. Eighteen days after the final putt drops at University Ridge, and just 125 miles up Interstate 39, many of the golfers in the AmFam field will tee it up at SentryWorld in Stevens Point in the first round of the 43rd U.S. Senior Open.

In short order, the AmFam Championship has become one of the most popular stops on the Champions tour and has raised more than $14.8 million for charity. The 54-hole, no-cut tournament has an 81-player field; the purse in 2022 was $2.4 million.

The U.S. Senior Open, scheduled for June 29 through July 2, is conducted by the United States Golf Association and is a 72-hole championship with a purse of $4 million, the biggest on the Champions tour. After 36 holes, the field of 156 is cut to the low 60 scorers and ties.

Unlike the AmFam, which is open

only to professionals, amateurs whose Handicap Index does not exceed 3.4 are eligible to qualify for the Senior Open.

In other locales, two events for senior golfers just weeks apart might result in “tournament fatigue” and a dilution of ticket sales and corporate support. But Nate Pokrass, tournament director of the AmFam Championship, has no doubt that Wisconsin fans will support both events.

“We look at the Senior Open just like the U.S. Open when it was at Erin Hills (in 2017), and the PGA Championship and Ryder Cup up at Whistling Straits,” he said. “We view it as great for the game of golf and great for the state of Wisconsin. The state, all the fans, obviously love golf in Wisconsin and having the two events, I believe we lift each other.

“We feel it just lifts the game of golf and we’re glad to be a part of it.”

Of course, it helps that two of the best players on the Champions tour call Madison home and have outstanding track records in both events.

Jerry Kelly is a two-time AmFam champion and finished tied for third last year. He has been a fixture on the U.S. Senior Open leaderboard, with four top-10 finishes, including back-to-

back years (2018-’19) in which he tied for second place.

Steve Stricker is the AmFam tournament host, and although he hasn’t won at University Ridge, he has never finished worse than 11th and in 2019 lost in a three-way playoff — with Kelly emerging victorious.

The very next week, Stricker repaid the favor, pulling away to a six-stroke

victory over Kelly and David Toms in the U.S. Senior Open on the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.

In Stricker’s only other Senior Open appearance, he finished second last year to Padraig Harrington, just one stroke back after a closing 65.

In addition, Stricker has a history at SentryWorld, having won the WIAA title there in 1984, when he was a junior at Edgerton High School.

“That’s sweet!” Stricker wrote in a text when he learned that SentryWorld would host the 2023 U.S. Senior Open. “To be a former champion and to be here in my home state where I won the state high school championship is really cool. Wow, it’s come full circle!”

Among those who are likely to attempt to qualify for the Senior Open are Madison native Mario Tiziani, who

on the Champions tour, and Fox Point native Skip Kendall, who has made more than 725 starts in PGA Tour-sanctioned events. Qualifying will take place over 18 holes at sites to be determined between May 10 and June 8.

“The history of Wisconsin golfers is tremendous,” Pokrass said. “Obviously, Steve and Jerry and Mario and Skip all compete in the AmFam Championship and of course we have Andy North and his legacy and impact on the game of golf. We’re certainly proud of all of them.

“We love having Skip every year and Mario and of course Steve and Jerry.

It’s great for our tournament. And we hope a couple of weeks later they go up to Stevens Point and all of them are competing at the top of the leaderboard.”

The U.S. Senior Open was held once previously in Wisconsin. In 2007, Brad Bryant won at Whistling Straits, with Ben Crenshaw finishing runner-up.

Sentry Insurance has built strong relationships with both the PGA Tour and the USGA. The mutual insurance company has been title sponsor of the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Maui since 2018 and last August announced an extension through 2035. Sentry is the USGA’s official insurance partner, and SentryWorld played host to a wildly successful U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship in 2019.

Sentry has gone to extraordinary lengths to prepare SentryWorld for the U.S. Senior Open. The course was closed for all of 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic and remained closed for all of 2021 as it underwent modifications for the Senior Open.

Among the changes were the narrowing of fairways on most of the par-4 and par-5 holes, moving some fairway bunkers, modifying three greens (on Nos. 4, 5 and 18) and adding some new back tees. The course will measure more than 7,200 yards for

the U.S. Senior Open.

In 2020, SentryWorld installed a sub-air system under all 18 greens and the practice green. The sub-air system allows the greens to dry faster after rain events; also, cool air can be blown through the system on hot summer days, when the grass would otherwise be stressed.

And last year, the company opened the Inn at SentryWorld, a 64-room boutique hotel built adjacent to the 18th hole.

SentryWorld will not open to the public in 2023 until after the U.S. Senior Open.

“From an agronomic standpoint, we put our course to bed (in the fall) as we normally do and if there are any issues that arise in the spring — snow mold or anything like that — we’ll have plenty of time to address it because nobody will be on the golf course until the championship starts,” said general manager Mike James. “That just shows the commitment and dedication we have to this championship. I’m sure it’s going to pay huge dividends for the players when they step on the tee.”

There are no plans for cross-promotion between the two events, but Pokrass and James are excited about the prospect of a very special month

of June.

“I would expect the Senior Open to have great success up in the Stevens Point market,” Pokrass said. ‘From our standpoint, we’re happy that another major is coming to Wisconsin. Just like in the past, as we look back at the U.S. Open and the PGA and the Ryder Cup, all those events when they’ve been in the same years that we’ve had our tournament, our ticket sales have been strong, our corporate sponsorship has been strong and our volunteer support has been strong. So, we feel good about it.”

Said James, “How do we both capitalize on two fantastic senior golf tournaments in the state of Wisconsin in one year, a couple weeks apart? It can be a great thing for both of us, and for the state.”

ERIN HILLS EAGER TO SHARE SPOTLIGHT AT 2023 STATE AMATEUR

Occasionally in the summer, Eddie Wajda will get a text or email from a friend or acquaintance who played Erin Hills and noticed Wajda’s name on a plaque in the dining room.

“Someone will see it and say, ‘Is this you?’ Or, ‘Am I reading this right?’” Wajda said with a laugh. “At which point, I have to admit that, yes, I won a tournament there, but it was a while ago.”

Wajda won the 2015 Wisconsin State Amateur at Erin Hills, which honors its champions with plaques in the dining room. Wajda’s plaque is on one wall, opposite those of Brooks Koepka (2017 U.S. Open), Kelly Kraft (2011 U.S. Amateur) and Matthew McClean (2022 U.S. Mid-Amateur).

“I wouldn’t say I’m necessarily in that category of the other golfers who have won there,” said Wajda, a Brookfield native and former University of Wisconsin golfer who lives in Chicago. “But it’s really cool to see your name up there.”

Another golfer will join Wajda on Erin Hills’ “Wall of Fame” this summer when the course hosts the State Amateur for the second time. The dates are July 17-20.

The 122nd State Am follows by one

year the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Erin Hills and precedes by two years the U.S. Women’s Open, underscoring the course’s extraordinary commitment to amateur golf. In addition to hosting USGA championships, it annually hosts the Marquette Intercollegiate and a major high school tournament that benefits the MACC Fund.

“We want to support amateur golf and we want to support Wisconsin golf, and the State Amateur does both of those,” said John Morrissett, Erin Hills’ competitions director. “We thoroughly enjoyed that week (in 2015). It’s an honor to host the State Amateur and soon after that we asked the WSGA, ‘When can we do it again?’”

The course essentially loses four days of revenue from public play, along with associated lodging and restaurant revenue. What does Erin Hills gain from hosting the State Amateur?

“What we gain is that we fulfill our mission of supporting golf and specifically amateur golf, and especially Wisconsin golf,” Morrissett said. “We very much want to be a good member of the Wisconsin golf community and we feel like this is one way we can do that.”

Erin Hills is a massive, windswept course, so longer hitters will enjoy an

advantage at the 2023 State Amateur, as is the case in most tournaments. In 2015, the course measured at least 7,200 yards in all four rounds, including 7,235 in Round 3 and 7,226 in the final round.

Though length off the tee is important, Wajda is proof that a player of modest length can succeed at Erin Hills. His winning score was 5-over 293.

“I don’t hit it super long. I would probably call myself more of a strategic

player, just plotting my way around the golf course,” he said. “I think at face value most people see the pure distance at Erin Hills and say, ‘Man, that’s a long golf course,’ or ‘Man, that’s a big piece of property,’ and think they have to bomb it around there.

“But especially during the summer, the way they can get the fescue up and with the wind going and it playing firm, it definitely takes some placement. I think that’s equally as important as bombing it out there.”

Another key to success at Erin Hills, Wajda said, is lag putting.

“They’re massive putting surfaces but in a way they’re sectioned off because they have some of the elephant grave-type of features to them with the mounds,” he said. “You can find yourself with a lot of long lag putts where your speed has to be good. I do think that’s important and probably paved at least part of the way for my success there.”

Erin Hills now has hosted four USGA championships and has earned a reputation as one of America’s finest public courses. For contestants in the State Amateur, playing at least two rounds at a major championship venue — four if they make the 36-hole cut — is a rare opportunity.

“And one thing that will be neat about the (2023) State Amateur is that the players will have the memories of the 2017 U.S. Open in their minds, as well as memories from the U.S. Mid-Am, which is something they did not have in 2015,” Morrissett said. “So they’ll be thinking about Brooks Koepka; they’ll look at the Justin Thomas plaque in the 18th fairway and see if they can even imagine replicating that shot.

“Likewise, they know that just 10 months before they played here, we

hosted a national championship, the U.S. Mid-Amateur, and less than two years after they play here we’re going to host the U.S. Women’s Open. So I think they’re definitely aware of that and appreciative of that. It adds to the experience, knowing that they’re playing the same course where the best golfers in the world have played and will play.”

Last year, 35-year-old Tyler Obermueller of Hudson won his second State Amateur title with a 3-under 286 total at Sand Valley. Obermueller edged 2021 WSGA Player of the Year Adam Miller, a Sand Valley caddie, by one shot.

Obermueller was somewhat of a surprise winner, considering he had played very little tournament golf in recent years while working and raising a family. The former University of Wisconsin golfer won his first State Amateur title in 2009.

Still very much a part-time player, Obermueller hopes to be at Erin Hills to defend his title against a field of battle-tested college players and seasoned veterans, along with some of Wisconsin’s top juniors and seniors who qualify.

“If there’s a venue that would make me want to come back, it would definitely be a place like Erin Hills,” he said. “I haven’t thought that far ahead, to be honest with you. If the game feels decent enough to compete and I can get away from work for a little while, I’d definitely give it a shot.”

The State Amateur champion receives a lifetime exemption into the championship, if he remains an amateur. He also receives a spot on the Nelthorpe Cup team and a five-year exemption into the Wisconsin State Open.

EMILY OR NOT, CHALLENGES ARE PLENTY FOR WOMEN’S GOLF

If Emily Lauterbach doesn’t show up this summer to defend her titles at the Wisconsin State Women’s Open or Wisconsin State Women’s Amateur, don’t read too much into it.

The University of Wisconsin golfer isn’t suggesting that those events no longer provide enough competition for her. On the contrary, they were cornerstones of Lauterbach’s schedule over the last three summers as the senior from Hartland has become the Badgers’ No. 1 golfer, the 2022 Wisconsin women’s amateur of the year and someone with conditional status on the Epson Tour after she graduates UW in May and begins her pro career on the LPGA’s developmental tour.

There is no reason for the state’s other top women’s amateurs to take a pass on the gauntlet of courses lined up to host the three major in-state events on the 2023 calendar.

The State Women’s Open will be played June 12-14 at Blackhawk Country Club in Madison. It falls between the State Women’s Match-Play Championship (June 5-7) and the State Women’s Amateur (July 10-11) at a pair of former venues that recently hosted State Women’s Opens – Racine Country Club (2017) and Janesville Country Club (2018), respectively.

“They are all courses where we’ve run men’s championships whether the state match-play or the State Amateur,” said Thomas Fazio, the Wisconsin State Golf Association’s tournament manager in charge of administering women’s championships.

Here are five women’s events that belong on the 2023 schedule for any competitive golfer:

1. Wisconsin State Women’s Open, Madison (June 12-14)

Younger golfers in the field will be quite familiar with Blackhawk CC. Since 2014, it has played host to at least one round of the Sherri Steinhauer Girls Championship, a top junior event.

The WPGA played the last two State Women’s Opens at the Golf Courses of Lawsonia in Green Lake on layouts that measured about 6,100 yards. That would mean playing from the tips at Blackhawk, which held its own at U.S. Girls’ Junior qualifying last summer when just one of 31 golfers broke par.

2. Wisconsin State Women’s Amateur, Janesville (July 10-11)

Only 16 golfers of the 64 in the field broke 80 in both rounds of what was then a 36-hole State Women’s Open in 2018 at Janesville CC. Fazio expects the same challenge in July when the 54-hole Women’s State Am is contested at the state’s oldest club.

“That’s a second-shot golf course, for sure,” Fazio said of Janesville CC and its many dogleg par 4s and par 5s. There could be a changing of the guard atop the Women’s Am. Milton’s Mia Seeman, the 2022 runner-up, is wrapping up her collegiate career at Lipscomb University in May and could join Lauterbach in the professional ranks, but said recently she “isn’t sure what her plans are for golf” this summer.

3. Wisconsin State Women’s Match Play, Racine (June 5-7)

If Fazio and the WSGA had one wish for its women’s championships, it would be to grow participation in the Wisconsin State Women’s Match Play, its season-opening event.

The format is considered attractive

to golfers looking to make the leap from junior to women’s amateur tournaments. The stroke-play qualifier guarantees golfers at least one, full 18-hole round while the match-play portion allows golfers to shake off the competitive rust in what, for many, is the first championship-level competition on the summer golf calendar.

4. Women’s Western Amateur, Naperville, Ill. (July 18-22)

Lauterbach, Abby Cavaiani and Seeman made the 70-minute drive south of the Wisconsin border last year when the 122nd Women’s Western Am was played at Sunset Ridge Country Club in Northfield, Ill., but only Lauterbach (69-77) earned one of the 32 match-play berths, falling in the opening round. This year, it’s about a two-hour commute from Milwaukee to White Eagle Golf Club for the 123rd playing of an event now run by the Western Golf Association. The event draws top women’s amateur golfers from around the country.

5. Badger Mutual Women’s Amateur, Milwaukee (July 24-25)

With the end of the PHC Classic during the COVID-19 pandemic, a spot in the local Epson Tour stop is no longer a carrot for golfers entering this two-day amateur event at Brown Deer Park.

However, there is a perhaps greater motivation for golfers to enter the Badger Mutual Women’s Am: It is traditionally the last in-state women’s championship on the summer calendar besides a series of popular WSGA team events – the State Women’s Four-Ball, State Father-Daughter, the State Women’s Scramble and the Patti Pelischeck Memorial Solheim Cup.

SENTRYWORLD MAKES LONG OVERDUE DEBUT AS 103RD STATE OPEN HOST

The 103rd Wisconsin State Open might not be the biggest golf championship on the marquee at SentryWorld in Stevens Point during 2023, but its stop carries some historical significance.

For a facility that pioneered destination golf in Wisconsin when it opened in 1982, SentryWorld has never been the destination for the State Open or the Wisconsin State Amateur. The Robert Trent Jones Jr. masterpiece has played host to a State Women’s Open (2011), a State Senior Men’s Amateur (1993), a State Senior Women’s Amateur (2010), the WIAA state boys golf championship Steve Stricker won in 1984 and the

2019 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.

This year, just 43 days after the U.S. Senior Open Championship wraps up its week-long stay in central Wisconsin, the State Open – annually the premier event on the state golf calendar – will take center stage Aug. 14-16 for its 72hole run at SentryWorld. The storylines are abundant.

The course’s famed “Flower Hole” –the 176-yard, par-3 16th hole featuring more than 33,000 flowers around its green – will be in full bloom. Its latest set of renovations ahead of the Senior Open, which shuttered the course in 2020 and 2021, will test a 156-player field on a course that will not open to the public until after the Senior Open has concluded in early July and even then will revert to a tee sheet that

features 20-minute intervals for optimal playing conditions.

Daniel Mazziotta, a caddie at Sand Valley Golf Resort in nearby Nekoosa, intends to be back to defend his championship after outlasting former Marquette University golfer Hunter Eichhorn in a three-hole playoff at Ozaukee Country Club in Mequon to win the 2022 title. But it remains to be seen how golf’s global calendar impacts the availability of challengers to his throne.

The 2023 State Open will be played opposite the U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club near Denver, Colo., which last year attracted 2021 State Amateur champion Piercen Hunt of Hartland and 2022 Wisconsin Men’s Player of the Year Jack Schultz of Milwaukee. PGA Tour Canada, which has not released its 2023 schedule, had an event opposite the State Open in 2022 that kept 2020 and 2021 State Open champion Harrison Ott of Brookfield and 2020 State Amateur champion Thomas Longbella of Chippewa Falls, among others, from competing.

Madison golfer Steve Stricker, one of four five-time State Open champions, told Wisconsin.Golf last August that he’d like to take at least one more shot at a sixth title before he retires from the game. This year’s State Open, while on a course he would have played earlier in the summer, falls between the Boeing Classic near Seattle, where Stricker had his only finish outside of the top 10 in

2022 (T-21), and the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary, Alberta, which he skipped.

“Hosting the State Open is something that is really special to us at SentryWorld,” said Danny Rainbow, the director of golf at the Sentry Insuranceowned facility. “Ever since we completed (initial) renovation work back in 2014 and reopened to the public in 2015, we’ve kind of been on a mission to sort of resurface as a top premier facility in Wisconsin. We’re not really seeking out tournament (hosting) opportunities, per se. But knowing if we provide an impeccable product, those opportunities are going to come along and we want to be part of that tournament scene and be a venue that has some reputation to be able to host some memorable championships.”

Indeed, SentryWorld’s debut as a State Open venue comes just one month after Erin Hills near Milwaukee – another destination venue with a history hosting USGA events – plays host to the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship. In recent years, the Wisconsin PGA has alternated between classic and modern courses with its assignment of the State Open, going to classics such as North Shore Country Club in Mequon (2017), North Shore Golf Club in Menasha (2018), Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa (2020) and Ozaukee Country Club (2022) in and around stops at newer layouts like The Bull at Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls (2014), University Ridge Golf Course in Madison (2015), Geneva National Golf Club in Lake Geneva (2019) and Blackwolf Run in Kohler (2016 and 2021).

“The golf is just so deep in Wisconsin,” said Mazziotta, a 30-something minitour veteran who has competed in all corners of the hemisphere and is working his way back to competing on a full-time basis. “From magical old country clubs with great architecture (to) truly epic public golf experiences. I can’t say enough about how fun and unique Sand Valley Resort is. I’m partial because I think it’s a big reason I’ve stayed working toward a future in golf.”

Future venues for the State Open show that the Wisconsin PGA tournament policy board, which selects courses to host the championship, isn’t afraid to add new destinations to the mix.

While this year marks the first time the State Open has been played north of Portage since 2008 when it was held at Eau Claire Golf & Country Club, it will make its northernmost stop in 2024 at Minocqua Country Club.

“In my time, I don’t think it ever came up,” Joe Stadler – beginning his 29th year as executive director of the Wisconsin PGA – said of SentryWorld hosting the State Open. “I don’t think they ever told us no so I don’t think we ever asked. Part of it is we only go north so often. Stevens Point Country Club hosted it (in 2000). (SentryWorld) had some really good events when it opened. You would’ve thought … before I even got here that it would’ve been booked (for a State Open).”

Stadler played college golf at UW-Stevens Point from 1985 through 1989. He remembers the strong first impression SentryWorld made on him when he played there for the first time.

“It’s stunningly beautiful and that’s not something I typically recognize,” he said. “I remember playing there my senior year. I was walking to the first tee and one of my buddy’s sisters or girlfriends was there. They made a comment like ‘Oh, my God! This place is beautiful.’ I looked up and I’m like, ‘Wow, it really is! I’ve played it 50 times in my life already and never noticed.’”

It was the first course Mazziotta played last fall after winning the State Open at Ozaukee Country Club.

“I’d been caddying like a crazy person (at Sand Valley, with) nearly no days off from August to October, but I loved it,” Mazziotta said of SentryWorld. “(You) have to drive it well and hit some good mid-to-long irons into greens. The condition was incredible. I think that it will be a great venue and (I) hope they bring it to the edge — long rough with some bounce in the greens.”

How SentryWorld will play for the State Open remains to be seen. The course can be stretched to 7,300 yards, which would be nearly 600 yards longer than Ozaukee CC played for the 2022 State Open, and Rainbow anticipates that the WPGA will monitor the set-up for the U.S. Senior Open and apply some of the USGA’s best practices in preparing the course for the State Open.

“It’ll be a unique opportunity coming pretty freshly on the heels of hosting

a U.S. Senior Open,” Rainbow said. “When we hosted the U.S. Junior Girls’ Championship, we essentially prepped the course like we would for regular play. Maybe a little extra emphasis on green speed and firmness and a little less water just to help the course play firmer and faster than normal.

“That’s what good players are looking for; they’re looking for those firm, faster conditions. That’s probably also what the governing bodies are looking to provide, that good test of golf. I anticipate we’d want to shoot for all the things that you would typically expect in a tournament that is trying to test some of the best players in the state. Greens that are firm and fast, weather permitting. Fairways that are firm and fast, weather permitting. And I guess we’ll see what happens with the rough length. For the Senior Open, it’s going to be quite juicy; no doubt about that. We’ll probably speak with the WPGA and see if there is a preference for how we prep it for the championship.”

His preference is to provide a set-up that will identify the best golfer in the state for 2023.

“To me, it’s absolutely the pinnacle of tournament golf in Wisconsin,” Rainbow said of the State Open. “I love seeing the caliber of player that is being drawn to this event. … This is the State Open and it’s for the best players in the state. It’s a who’s who of golf in Wisconsin.”

EVER-EXPANDING JUNIOR GOLF HAS 2023 BUILDING BLOCKS

By all standards, 2022 was “a tremendous year” for the Wisconsin PGA Junior Foundation.

More than 1,350 members accounted for 8,781 entries (up 923 from 2021). There were more events on the WPGA Players Tour (eight in all), more stops on the Junior Tour (50) and more events on the Futures Tour (20) than 2021. The WPGA introduced the Intermediate Tour with seven events for those looking to make the jump from the Futures Tour to the Junior Tour.

“We weren’t sure (what would happen) when we started adding more events – I think we went up 14 or 15 events from (2021), just trying to give more of an opportunity to play,” said Andy Landenberger, the WPGA junior golf director. “That doesn’t necessarily mean you have more players interested. You’re just trying to bring a bigger scope to the state.”

Here are five events junior golf families should scope out in 2023:

1. WPGA Junior Championship, Milwaukee (June 21-22)

It isn’t the first event on the 2023 Junior Tour schedule (that will again come June 9 at Janesville Riverside Golf Course), but the WPGA Junior Championship is where many junior golf careers begin.

The WPGA Junior Championship is also a “major” for the state’s top junior golfers. It serves as one of two qualifiers for the National PGA Junior Championship later in the summer. For the pre-teen golfers, the WPGA offers a 12-and-under championship in mid-August. The location of that 18hole event has yet to be announced.

2. WPGA Players Tour Elite Championship, Hartford (July 16-17)

The Morgan Stanley Tour Championship will be converted to the WPGA Players Tour Elite Championship in 2023.

It will continue to be held at Washington County Golf Club in Hartford. Landenberger envisions the event being a regional showcase of top junior golfers

from around the upper Midwest with as many as 10 boys and 10 girls per neighboring state receiving invitations. “Coach (Mike) Wilson (of Wisconsin) and Coach (Steve) Bailey (of Marquette) are on the board and Mike’s like ‘These (36-hole in-state) events are great, but have you ever thought of doing a higherlevel event?’” Landenberger said. “I think we can get it to be a good event in 2023 and grow it from there.”

3. Wisconsin Junior Masters Championship, Racine (July 24-27)

It’s “match play week” on the schedule with the first three days of the Wisconsin Junior Masters falling opposite the WIsconsin Junior Girls Championship, also a match-play event at Harford GC.

The four-day, boys-only Junior Masters, which drew more than 100 golfers as recently as 2017, has struggled to attract more than 80 since the 2020 tournament was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Junior Masters was launched in 1974 and is played annually in late July at Johnson Park Golf Course in Racine. It features matches in two age divisions after an 18-hole Monday qualifier.

4. Sherri Steinhauer Girls Championship, Madison (July 31-Aug. 1)

The 36-hole event named in honor

of the former LPGA Tour golfer from Madison has grown from 64 golfers in 2018 to 92 golfers in the high school division in 2022 (with eight more competing in the college division, which was added to the tournament format in 2021).

“The Sherri,” as it is known, is getting another boost in 2023 from the event’s namesake herself.

Steinhauer approached Nakoma Golf Club in Madison, her home course growing up, about playing host to the final round of the 11th playing of the event, replacing Pleasant View Golf Club in Middleton. The first round will continue to be played at Blackhawk Country Club, which has hosted the opener since 2014.

5. Mike Schnarr Boys Championship, Madison (Aug. 21-23)

The Mike Schnarr Boys Championship will also have a new look to it this summer.

The third playing of the boys-only event at Blackhawk CC, named for the club’s longtime head professional and father of current general manager Derek Schnarr, will grow to be a threeday event, Landenberger said. The 112-player field will be cut to the low 40 golfers plus ties after 36 holes for the Wednesday finale.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES EXEMPLIFIED THE VERY BEST OF THE GAME

Rob Jansen, executive director of the Wisconsin State Golf Association, got it right when he said that the three newest members of the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame exemplified the very best of the game.

Frances Hadfield was a pioneering women’s amateur golfer in the first half of the 20th century. Carolyn Barnett-Howe represents the PGA of America with distinction as both a player and a teacher. And John Jenson is the epitome of volunteerism, giving selflessly of himself in a number of ways so that others might enjoy the game.

Hadfield, Barnett-Howe and Jenson were inducted into the Hall of Fame this past October at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club. Their inclusion brings to 101 the number of people enshrined in the Hall, dating to the initial class in 1964.

Hadfield, who died in 1953 and for whom no living relatives could be found — she never married and had no children — was presented by Mark Ruttum, the club historian at Blue Mound.

Ruttum said that in doing research at the Milwaukee Public Library, he found more than 500 references to Hadfield in stories in the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Sentinel.

Hadfield was the daughter of Harry S. Hadfield, runner-up in the 1910 State Amateur. She won the first of her four Wisconsin Women’s Match Play titles at age 17 in 1917. She also was a two-time champion of the Clearwater (Fla.) Women’s Invitational, which attracted a national field. And she was runner-up in the 1918 Women’s Western Amateur.

But her biggest claim to fame was a playoff victory over reigning U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Glenna Collett in the 1926 Belleair (Fla.) Invitational.

Barnett-Howe, 60, has compiled an impressive playing record going back to her junior days at Reid Municipal in Appleton. After earning 12 varsity

letters in four sports at Appleton East High School, she joined the women’s golf team at the University of New Mexico as a walk-on and wound up playing in two NCAA championships.

With a degree in Russian studies, Barnett-Howe found she had limited career options upon graduation.

“When you’re done with college, you have to enter the real world,” she said in her acceptance speech. “With my Russian studies degree, they’re like, ‘Would you like fries with that?’ So, I had two interviews. One was at a bank, and that felt soulless. And then the other one, my dad was in the paper industry and they gave me a wing nut to see how fast I could screw it on. I almost cried. Is this what the world has to offer me?

“I seriously was at the end of my rope.”

Then she was introduced to PGA professional Steve Howe, who offered her a job and later asked her to marry him.

She went on to win the Wisconsin Women’s State Open four times and qualified for the Wisconsin State Open nine times, a record for a female.

Barnett-Howe also is a two-time

winner of the National PGA Women’s Stroke Play Championship (2006, 2008) and competed twice in both the U.S. Women’s Open and the U.S. Senior Women’s Open.

Jenson, 75, is an indefatigable volunteer who since his retirement in 2007 has averaged 95 days per year serving as a rules official and a tournament administrator.

The current president of the Wisconsin Public Links Association, Jenson runs the Ray Fischer Amateur Championship at Janesville Riverside Golf Course, which annually attracts a strong field. He has been a WSGA director since 2002 and was the organization’s volunteer of the year in 2021.

Jenson, who lives in Madison, also is a rules official for the WIAA, WSGA and Wisconsin PGA Section.

Jenson has an accounting background and described himself as a “volunteer junkie.” He volunteers with several other organizations in the Madison area.

“That’s just my nature,” he said. “I’m a detail person. The numbers always have to add up.”
