From the Desk THEY SAY A CHANGE IS AS GOOD AS A HOLIDAY...

Welcome to the all-new Killer Rides. These days, Killer Rides is so much more than just a monthly magazine – we are a modified street car community with a host of events, some cool merchandise and more. Think of it as a National Car Club without the need to attend meetings. There will be numerous benefits to those becoming a Killer Rides supporter, with more information coming on that very soon. Plus, there’s a wealth of cars out there that deserve a magazine feature, but didn’t fit into the PSC mag way of thinking. So what else has changed? Well, if you’ve already had a flick through the pages before reading this, you’ll see changes in the way we are featuring cars. I’ve been working on a new concept for a while and now the time is right for it all to fall into place. I want to showcase the entire modified car scene, in a way it’s never been done before. Check out the features in this issue and you’ll see they have been shown in their intended environment. The show cars were photographed at shows (just like an extended show coverage, but just on your car!), the street cars have been shot on location, the drag cars have on-track action shots whilst those intended on frying tyres will be shown doing exactly that! There will be minimal text, just the basic information you need to know. Let me know what you think? There’s so much more happening behind the scenes at Killer Rides, and in coming issues I hope to be able to share even more great things we have planned. Now, before you start emailing me about Performance Street Car, it’s still happening, with some special issues being compiled as we speak. Hang on to your hats people, it’s going to be a big year!

WHAT’S HAPPENING OOOPS...MY BAD!

No one’s perfect, right? So cut me a little slack. In my haste to get the last issue sorted, I incorrectly credited Chad Silvey with the pics of the Showcars Melbourne event coverage, where in actual fact, it was Lauren from Xposed Photography that sent those pics in. Sorry Lauren, I’ll take more care next time…I promise!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – 2022 ROAD TRIP

Some things you just can’t plan for… No one saw the fuel prices going to crazy levels, nor did we expect the interest rates increase as well. And whilst we will just have to live to learn with them, it will affect the things that are considered ‘non-essential’, including car events. I have had people contact me recently about whether the Road Trip will be happening next year, because the way things are at the moment, money restraints due to those factors, will not allow them to take part this year. So let’s be realistic. I want everyone to have the opportunity to be a part of the Road Trip and I still want this to happen to do our best for GOTCHA4LIFE – our charity partner. Here’s what I’ve come up with – a smaller, 3-day cruise that will still start in Wollongong, but will now end in Albury/Wodonga, instead of Ballarat. The original cruise route will now be put on ice for 2023. Day 1 – Wed 19th Oct – Wollongong to Goulburn to Canberra – 251klms Day 2 – Thurs 20th Oct – Canberra to Yass to Harden to Temora to Narrandera – 329klms Day 3 – Fri 21st Oct – Narrandera to Wagga Wagga to Culcairn to Albury/Wodonga – 233klms Show and Shine – Friday evening. 5pm-8pm at a venue to be announced soon! This revised route will not only save money on accommodation and fuel but it will still allow us to continue with the event. So with that information now public knowledge, how about securing your spot for the first ever Road Trip!

PRIZED PIECES OPENS NEW RETAIL OUTLET

The next Killer Rides Show Standout award will be handed out at the Grudge Kings Drag Meet, July 2nd at Sydney Dragway. Who will win?

10

After establishing himself as an online business with trade stands at various show, Matt Sharman has taken the plunge an opened up Prized Pieces to the general public with his new retail shop. Located in the new industrial area in Bellambi, just north of Wollongong, the shop stocks all the lastest and greatest in diecast cars, bikes and trucks as well as a wide range of automotive memorabilia. There’s plenty of parking onsite too! So now you can check out everything Prized Pieces has on offer both online and in person. The shop is lkocated at Unit 70/6 Bellambi Lane, Bellambi. UPDATE SHORTER CRUISE TO HAPPEN FOR 2022

Just when you think everything is finally getting back to normal, the world has once again been thrown into turnoil with the war in Russia afftecting the worlds fuel prices - or so we are led to believe. With fuel now priced at over $2.00 per litre, and with interest prices on the rise as well, I really do believe that expecting people to tackle a six-day cruise is asking for a little too much. So, to make sure the first PSC Road Trip still happens this year, I’ve designed a smaller, more economical threeday cruise to kick off proceedings and of course, to still raise money for Gotcha4life. Check out the details elsewhere in this issue!

ELECTRIC VEHICLES THE FUTURE? NOT FOR ME

Hi Paul, With the push towards Electric vehicles coming from all sides at the moment, where is that going to leave modified cars? Can you imagine a world where the Summernats is a very quiet place? I’m sure the neighbours would love it! I’m hoping that the whole electric car thing is an option and not a necessity, I couldn’t see myself driving something as boring as an electric Corolla. Trevour F Via Messenger

ROAD TRIP…MAYBE NEXT YEAR?

G’day Paul, As much as I was looking forward to being a part of the first Performance Street Car Road Trip, the massive increase in fuel costs has put us out this time unfortunately. Trying to conserve fuel in a big block Camaro for six-days isn’t a possibility and the extra cost of running the car has us sitting out the 2022 cruise. Will you be running it again in 2023? If so, we will be there… Regards, Louis T Via Messenger G’day Louis, You’re not the first to enquire about whether the Road Trip is still on. I completely understand where the concerns are, as it wasn’t going to be a cheap venture regardless, but with the higher fuel costs and the interest rate increases of late, who knows just how wide reaching these will be? So, with that in mind, I’ve decided to make the first Road Trip a three-day version. The details are listed in this issue and on the website. Hope this makes it easier for you guys to attend. Paul.

KILLER T-SHIRTS

Hi Paul, Love the Killer Rides T-Shirts. I’ve placed an order today and look forward to it arriving. Will you be doing any different designs? If so, count me in for whatever you have coming up. You can never have too many cool car t-shirts in the collection. Thanks, Lucas M Via Email. G’day Trevour, There’s been a lot of misinformation being posted on social media lately saying that the newly elected Government plans to eradicate fuel-powered vehicles in favour of electric vehicles. Whilst they do have plans to increase the sale of new electric cars, there are no plans to make everyone ditch their cars for an electric version. Let’s face it, if they made them redundant, they are worth nothing, so there would be millions of petrol and diesel cars littering the country and then those people have to then find the money to buy a new electric car without the chance to trade in their old car. It’s just not realistic and I very much doubt it will ever happen. 18

G’day Lucas, Thanks for the order of the shirt. Hopefully by now, you’re proudly wearing it. Yes, there are more designs coming in the near future and as soon as they are ready to be released, they will be advertised in the magazine and website.

REGO BLITZ

Hi Paul, What the hell is going on with a heap of cars being called in to present for a rego inspection? Has it been started from anything in particular and will this be an ongoing problem for all car enthusiasts? At the moment, I really don’t want to take my Monaro out for fear of being issued a letter about the rego. This is going to be a big problem in the Sydney scene if it continues. I have struggled to get any answers. Name Withheld Hi Mate, The recent rego blitz has certainly had a huge effect on the scene, with many owners refusing to take their cars to any events. I’ve even struggled to get some photo shoots done as well. I have heard though that it’s not going to be a regular thing and the focus is mainly on modified cars running on Historic rego plates. I guess at the end of the day, if you’re driving an obviously illegal car, you’re taking a chance of not getting caught in the first place. My advice is to make your car as legal as possible and get it engineered as soon as you can. From there, you’ll have minimal worries… You may have noticed that I have been blanking out owners number plates too from the coverage we put online from our monthly Mid-Week Meet-Ups just to put the owners minds at ease.

Usually overlooked in favour of the ’55 or ’57 Chev, the ’56 can still be a stunning car when the right people are put on the job! Usually, builds like this start off with a car that has seen much better days, something that was destined for scrap metal if someone couldn’t save it. But that wasn’t the case here. This ’56 Belair Coupe was virtually driven into the Southern Rod & Custom workshop. Sure, the factory aqua and white paint wouldn’t have won any paint awards at shows and the interior was showing signs of years use, but it wasn’t ready to be put out to pasture. Still, a nice car for some, just doesn’t cut it. A Southern Rod & Custom built car though, well that’s a different matter.

Under Shane Rowe’s guidance, his team stripped the ’56 down to its bare bones, preparing to give the Belair an epic makeover. With the body removed from the factory chassis, the guys straightened the panels, shaved the bumpers, converted it from left to right and made sure all the gaps were better throughout the car. There’s lots of subtle changes to, like the custom bonnet hinges, new boot floor, reshaped engine bay, firewall and radiator support panel.

The body now sits on a new Chassisworks-built frame that features an independent front end with tube arms, coil-over shocks, and 14-inch discs with 6-piston Wilwood calipers on each corner. The 9-inch diff features Strange floaters and 35-spline Track Lock centre and is mounted to the chassis via a four-link and coil-overs. The wheels of choice are 20x9 and 22x12 Billet Specialties wrapped in 255/30 and 315/25 tyres.

22

With the bonnet lifted, the view will be dominated by the oh-so-cool Plazmaman billet intake and dual air filter arrangement. 23

The ‘56’s big engine bay now overflows with performance in the form of a 632-cube big block. With the bonnet lifted, the view will be dominated by the oh-so-cool Plazmaman billet intake and dual air filter arrangement. The boys also fabricated a pair of custom headers to help the mega-cube big-block breathe better. The engine features a host of good gear that will see those big tyres struggling for traction once the go pedal is jumped on. Backing the engine is a Rogers-spec Turbo 400 auto.

With the stance right, the driveline sorted and the body ready for paint, I can’t wait to see this one roll from the showroom and onto the blacktop! As with all cars that come from the Southern Rod & Custom Workshop, this ’56 Belair coupe will be one sweet ride. 24

In standard form, the VN Commodore is not something you’d be bragging about owning to all your mates. Let’s face it, they’re not really that exciting. That’s not to say that they can’t be made to be more appealing though. HSV certainly got the job done with their Group A Version, widely regarded as the toughest of all Group A Commodores. Then Ray Elia come along and took it way past anything HSV could ever imagine. Could this be the ultimate VN Commodore? The mundane, well-worn, Berlina-spec VN Ray started with, is now just a distant memory thanks to the team at 2SUS Custom Resprays. With the car stripped

back to its bare bones, the pile of parts no longer required grew bigger. The old faded blue paint was quickly removed and the panels prepped for better things. With a modified Group A body fitted, the reworked body was covered from head to toe in the HSV VN colour, Durif Red. To compliment the new colour, a set of 22x8 and 22x11 chromed FR Simmons fill the wheel arches to perfection.

Forget the six-pack, it didn’t even get a look in. And the twin throttle body HSV set-up? Well, that’s been done a million times.

Even with the bonnet closed, it’s hard to ignore the engine package. Forget the six-pack, it didn’t even get a look in. And the twin throttle body HSV set-up? Well, that’s been done a million times. Now, there’s 6-litres of pumped LS providing plenty of power, thanks mostly to the highly polished 8/71 Blower Shop supercharger topped with an Enderle injector hat that has been set up to run electronically by Joe Blo Speed Shop. As they say, ‘if you’ve got it, flaunt it!’ Needless to say, the engine performs every bit as good as it looks (and doesn’t it look awesome!) with a host of good gear inside. A Haltech Elite 2500 ECU controls how the boosted LS performs.

Taking the bulk of the punishment from the engine is a Turbo 400 auto prepped by Craig’s Automatics with a narrowed 9-inch diff featuring a 3.9-geared Tru Track centre and billet axles tasked with getting that power to the tyres. The diff locates using a 4-link which allows the bigger rubber to sit inside the modified tubs. The fabricated front “tubs” are obvious in the smoothed-out engine bay, but what’s not so easy to see is the custom independent front end. QA1 coil-over shocks and AP Racing brakes are fitted to each corner. 36

Inside, the Commodore never looked so damn good! There are acres of red Nappa leather and suede spread across the four Devonish seats, door trims, headlining, customs centre console and dash. Gone are the factory gauges, with a much more stylish Dakota Digital display added to the facia in a billet surround to compliment the billet steering wheel and surrounds for the speakers in the door trims. The custom trim also extends into the boot area, encompassing the fuel cell. After a long build, Ray unveiled the tough VN, dubbed KING GROUP A to an appreciative crowd at the recent Sydney Hot Rod & Custom Auto Expo at Rosehill Racecourse. There are more show appearances planned, including Killer Rides Live before Ray hits the blacktop – after all, that was its intended use right from the outset!

TUFF MOUNTS HOLDEN NATIONALS_HEATHCOTE PARK RACEWAY WORDS – PAUL BECK PICS – LAUREN @XPOSED PHOTOGRAPHY

l a r e n e G Getting The

Idea!

A move to a two-day format proved to be the right one for the 2022 Holden Nationals held at Heathcote Park Raceway, with an increase of entrant and spectator numbers.

For any promoter, increasing the length of an event is a big call. Will it bring in more entrants? Will the crowds come both days? Can I justify the increased costs of venue hire etc? I’m sure Todd Foley must have asked himself those questions a hundred times before locking in the Holden Nationals as a two-day event.

40

41

When entries officially closed, there were 180 car owners all ready to run down the Heathcote quarter mile and with the track booked for two days, the opportunity to make more passes was certainly on the cards. There were seven classes on offer this year including two eighth-mile, heads-up radial classes – one for those running a 255 tyre and another for those running the bigger 275. Add to this, five dial-in brackets that run over the full quarter, and you have a big couple of days of drag racing action. There was also a show and shine for those wanting to be a part of the event away from the racing.

Day one (Saturday) was hot, and those conditions offered up a track surface that was challenging to say the least.

42

43

Day one (Saturday) was hot, and those conditions offered up a track surface that was challenging to say the least. It was the big-guns that struggled the most, over-powering the tyres at the hit of the throttle. That’s not to say that no one made a great pass. Luke Foley squeezed his Commodore down the track to record a 7.84 @ 178mph – a time that was unbeaten over the weekends racing. As Saturday was qualifying day, many decided to try different set-ups in preparation for the eliminations on Sunday. Some worked, some didn’t…

44

45

Come Sunday, the show and shine was well underway before the blacktop action started. With 40-less cars that qualifying, it was a simple case of you lose, you’re out in all classes. In amongst all of the usual Torana’s, Monaro’s, Commodores etc sat one car on the startline that probably had a few people confused. Jason Waye from Tuff Mounts (the events major sponsor) got permission to bring along his turbo Barra-powered Fox-bodied Mustang to make some passes in preparation for Drag Challenge. I’m guessing most people probably thought it was LS-powered before Jason fired up the hot six-pack and dropped a couple of quick passes for the crowd.

46

With more sponsors coming on board, more than $20,000 in cash and prizes were up for grabs, no doubt pleasing each brackets winners and runner-up’s, taking home $1250 and $250 respectively.

At the end of the proceedings, more than 3000 spectators had made the trip out to the track to take in some of the toughest, quickest and wildest Holden’s ever assembled at Heathcote Park Raceway. Todd will be keeping the two-day format for future events, but may implement a Friday qualifying, Saturday racing program. Stay tuned…

ADRIAN ROMANDINI 700HP, 528CI HEMI-POWERED 1968 DODGE CHARGER

The late 60’s spawned some damn impressive muscle cars, and one such car, the 1969 Dodge Charger certainly stands out amongst the crowd of high-powered coupes available from all of the manufacturers at the time. Obviously, this model made an impression on Adrian Romandini and the search began for a suitable project. Purchased locally in Melbourne from Just Mustangs, this Charger started its life as a 383-powered car in Turquoise with a black vinyl roof. The build on this Charger took a long period of time, but like anything, achieving the highest quality possible takes time, especially when you’re running a busy business and raising a young family. With no deadline to work towards, Adrian spent all the time he needed to reach his end goal.

Externally, this Charger looks like a factory restored muscle car. The original Dodge B5 Bright Blue has been laid down over flawless panels and with the all new chrome in place, the Charger’s body is better than ever, thanks to the combined efforts of George Lyras at KB Restorations who not only looked after the body and paint, but also the mini-tubs. To compliment the factory-style build, Adrian kept the right wheel under each guard. The Magnum 500 rims fill each guard perfectly, including the mini-tubs that swallow up the 12.5inch Mickey Thompson tyres. The underside is detailed just as well too. Like the body, the interior has been mostly restored with the white trim (by Jim at Terry’s Motor Trimming), wood-rimmed steering wheels and factory gauges reminiscent of how it looked when it rolled from the showroom floor. The only additions include the B&M Shifter and a pair of AutoMeter gauges.

But it’s under that scooped bonnet that gets muscle car lovers week at the knees. Muscle cars need big engines and really, is there anything bigger (or better) than a Hemi? Adrian added a 528-cube Hemi to his Charger, filling the engine bay to capacity. The 1050 Pro-Systems Dominator topped Hemi makes around 700hp and is detailed like a seasoned show car. Con Sagiaris is the man responsible for the engine package, which is backed by a tough 727 Torqueflite that sends the power to a full-floater, 3.7-geared Dana60 rear end located with split mono leaf springs, Calvert 9-way shocks and Caltracs. That’s about as tough a driveline as you’ll ever need. The meticulous build period culminated with the Charger making its debut to the world at the recent MotorEx event where it had muscle car fans grinning from ear to ear – much like Adrian does every time he fires up that big cube Hemi and hits the blacktop!

Early Corvette’s like Wendy and Robert Stevenson’s ‘58 Roadster, simply oozed style, charactor and charisma. With an abundance of chrome adorning every corner of the body, these cars are what the 50’s were all about. As much as this particular car looks like a resto, with its classic black, white, red and chrome colour combo, first impressions can definitely be deceiving...

When this Corvette rolled from the factory floor in 1958, the top-spec engine option was a 290hp, 283ci small block topped with fuel injection - yes, injection, back in ‘58. Those engines are very hard to come by these days, and even if you could find one, the price tag would be astronimical! For Wendy and Robert, they updated their driveline by fitting a Gen V, LT376 engine making 535hp matched to a 6-speed auto. A Dana 44 rear end has been fitted to the modified chassis featuring C4 Corvette front and rear suspension. The brakes are C6 Z06 discs with electronic master cylinder.

Though its style is still pure 1958, there’s been so many mod cons added to this Vette that aren’t very obvious. OK, so the one-off EVOD 18-inch billet wheels and engine are a bit hard not to miss, but did you spot the auto-sensing LED headlights, Dakota Digital gauges, bluetooth vintage sound system, Vintage-Air air-con, inertia reel seatbelts, keyless entry, push-button start, and electronic park brake? No? Neither did I... Wendy and Robert credit Fuel Bespoke Design for the build. 62

MEGUIAR’S MOTOREX_MELBOURNE SHOWGROUNDS_APR30/MAY1-2022 WORDS – PAUL BECK PHOTO’S – CHAD SILVEY

t s e t a e r G e Th SHOW, MAN!

66

After a forced break from the calendar, the Meguiar’s MotorEx returned in 2022 with the biggest, most impressive indoor car show Australia has ever seen.

Everyone knew this was going to be an amazing show, after Covid had caused the promoters to shelve plans a couple of times. Those car owners that had prepared their new rides to be unveiled had more time than they had bargained for, but that’s a good thing. So leading up to the events first day, the snippets of new car unveils that had been sent out via social media, had tongues wagging. There was so much hype surrounding the next batch of cool cars to be unleashed onto the scene, that this quickly became the ‘must-do’ event of 2022.

67

Along with the unveils, there were a bunch of cars in the running to be awarded the Best of Breed after qualifying at various events around the country. The line-up of cars that have travelled far and wide to be at MotorEx are, put simply, the best of the best. Supreme quality was everywhere, making it very difficult for the judges to find the winners. The group was whittled down to half a dozen cars, dubbed the Super Six which included Trent Carter’s 1970 Plymouth Barracuda; David Xuereb’s TC Cortina; Brenton Dalwood’s

68

’35 Ford Coupe, Kees Wheels ’35 Chev Coupe, Dean Rickard’s HT GTS Monaro and Brian Imlach’s ’34 Chev sedan. After all the points were tallied up, the Grand Master award went to Brenton Dalwood, whose amazing ’35 Ford Coupe won his spot at his local show, the Adelaide Auto Expo. Brenton also took home first place in Paint, Engine Bay, Undercarriage and Driveline, as well as Engineering and Innovation. He also came runner up in Interior and Impact and Display categories. That’s quite a haul…

Bodywork Winners

1st Trent Carter – 1970 Plymouth Barracuda 2nd Charles Harley – 1957 Chevy Bel Air 3rd Kees Weel – 1935 Chevy Chevrolet 3 window

69

But, there was so much more than the unveils that make MotorEx what it is. Over 700 cars are put on display for the huge crowd to drool over as patrons made their way around the expansive Melbourne Showgrounds. On top of that, there were plenty of traders on hand showcasing their products and services to the power-hungry sector of the assembled crowd. And whilst you could stare at the indoor displays all day, making the trek in between each building wasn’t a brisk walk along the pathway, with the entrants in the Rare Spares Real Street competition scattered around the venue too.

Paint Winners

1st Brent Dalwood - 1935 Ford Coupe 2nd Brian Imlach - 1934 Chevy Sedan 3rd David Xuereb - 1973 Ford TC Cortina

71

Back to the unveils, and because of the cancellation of events all over the country, MotorEx were inundated with no less than 24 cars ready to have the covers removed from them on Day 1 of MotorEx. Variety was the name of the game this year, with plenty of traditional Hot Rods and Street Machines unveiled including Robert & Wendy Stevenson’s ’58 Corvette Roadster that, at first glance, looks like it’s been faithfully restored until you spot the 535hp Gen V LT376 engine transplant (with six-speed auto) and then find out about the later-model underpinnings. In stark contrast, Peter Sauer’s HG Brougham was nowhere near as subtle with the twin-turbo big block filling the engine bay to capacity. The ProStreet styled luxo-racer had a huge crowd around it the entire time! Another car that was completely left of centre, was Paul Tinnings Twin-turbo, V10Viper powered custom XP Falcon coupe that made the long haul down from Darwin. Luckily he did, taking home the prestigious Laurie Starling Engineering Excellence award. In amongst all the glitz and glamour of the paint and chrome sat

72

a couple of creations that were on show in bare steel. Eliminator Rod & Custom had a smik ’68 Dodge Charger that looked almost too good to lay paint on. With its big diametre wheel combo and slammed stance, this will be one to look out for. Another ‘all in the raw’ unveil was Wayne Price’s blown HK Monaro. Praised by those in the know as having some of the best bodywork ever seen, the HK was one of the talking points of the weekend. In the ‘dare to be different’ section, nothing even come close to the stunning 911 Porsche built by the Real Steel Group. In fact, the Porsche was so good, it beat off some highly regarded competition to take off the Top Street Machine award!

Engine & Compartment Winners 1st Brent Dalwood - 1935 Ford Coupe 2nd Brian Imlach - 1934 Chevy Sedan 3rd Trent Carter - 1970 Plymouth Barracuda

Undercarriage & Driveline Winners 1st Brent Dalwood - 1935 Ford Coupe 2nd Brian Imlach - 1934 Chevy Sedan 3rd David Xuereb - 1973 Ford TC Cortina

MotorEx started life in Sydney as an indoor show and shine, but over the years has grown to include the prestigious Meguiar’s Best of Breed winners, Performance Garage and more recently drifting, free-style moto-x, and burnout demonstrations. Whilst the residents within earshot probably weren’t impressed by the noise, for everyone else, it was awesome – taking MotorEx from a static show to a more interactive event. Whilst the drifters put on a great display, the few cars assembled for the burnout demonstrations really had the crowd smiling, thanks in part to Jake Myers, and the LOO5E Commodore. Did someone say entertainment?

Interior Winners

1st Dean Rickard - Holden HT Monaro 2nd Brenton Dalwood - 1935 Ford Coupe 3rd Brian Imlach - 1934 Chevy Sedan 74

75

With this year’s event being the 20th in MotorEx history, how will the team top this year’s line-up for the 21st event in 2023. I can’t wait to see what they come up with… www.motorex.com.au

NEVILLE HAYNES 1941 OUTLAW WILLYS COUPE

For some Hot Rodders, life doesn’t revolve around the ’28, ’32, ’33 or ’34 Ford. For some, like Neville “Nifty” Haynes, happiness is a tough ’41 Willys coupe and he found just the car for sale in the good old US of A! Before being shipped across the globe to an anxiously awaiting Neville, this cool Willy’s was part of a very special collection of cars and bikes owned by none other than Paul Teutul Senior of Orange County Choppers fame. When Neville saw it for sale, he couldn’t help but make it his…

There’s 502-cubes of tough Chev big block jammed into the small engine bay and like the rest of the build, its detailed to the enth degree.

NEVILLE HAYNES 1941 OUTLAW WILLYS COUPE

It’s not hard to see why Neville was attracted to the Willys in the first place. The 40/41 Coupe has that certain style that lends itself so well to the Hot Rodding treatment and because you don’t see that many of them here in Australia, they will always be on the ‘must-have’ list. Underneath that stunning Mercedes Silver and Wade Hughes applied reverse candy flamed paint work is an Outlaw fibreglass body that relies on mostly traditional styling to look just right. The non-Willys item added to the body is the slimline taillight that is flush-mounted for that ultra-smooth body. The body also features remote door poppers and bootlid too.

In stark contrast to the body colours, the interior is red…very red! Shannon Walters did the trim work in the US covering everything in red leather and what couldn’t be wrapped in leather was painted to match. With just a sprinkling of billet alloy used, the interior space is as impressive as the outside! From the comfy bucket seats, the AutoMeter gauges and the heater / air-con set up, it’s not only show quality, but functional too. 80

81

NEVILLE HAYNES 1941 OUTLAW WILLYS COUPE

Obviously, there’s no engine hardware hanging through the flamed bonnet, but that doesn’t mean the Willys is powered by a stock 283! There’s 502-cubes of tough Chev big block jammed into the small engine bay and like the rest of the build, its detailed to the enth degree. Backing the fat block is a Turbo 700R that sends the 500-plus horsepower down to the 3.7-geared 9-inch diff. The driveline sits on an Outlaw chassis that incorporates a Heidts front end, polished four-bar rear and a full Airride suspension setup. The wheels of choice are Budnik Gassers measuring 15x6 and 17x13 and each does its best to hide the Wilwood disc brakes. Neville is happy to enjoy the Willys just how it is, with no future plans to change anything. And being a big ’41 Willys fan, I can understand that. From where I am sitting, this Willys couldn’t get any better really.

MUSTANG OWNERS CLUB ANNIVERSARY PONY ROUND-UP - APRIL 10, 2022 WORDS / PICS – PAUL BECK

58-years after the first Ford Mustang was unleashed onto the muscle car market, the Mustang Owners Club of Australia (NSW) got together to celebrate the milestone with their annual Anniversary Pony Round-Up.

84

85

Can you spot the odd one out? Finding the Vineyard Hotel on Windsor road was easy, simply find a Mustang heading in that general direction and follow it. Chances are it was heading to the event anyway. Pulling into the carpark, one thing became very clear – these Mustang owners are a passionate bunch! The carpark surrounding the Hotel is by no means small, but it was full. Very full. And I reckon more than half of the Mustang’s on display were the latest shape – not that that’s a bad thing. It’s a fact that the Mustang is the number one selling muscle car in the world, and the fact that Ford saw the need to build them for right hand drive markets as well, proved to be a great move.

From the faithfully restored rarities to the mildly modified streeter’s and of course those race car replicas. There certainly was something on show that suited everyone’s taste.

86

87

In the late model group, most chose to keep them just how they bought them from their local dealership, but there was a couple of exceptions. One car emulated the XB John Goss special coupe with the green with orange stripes added to the white bonnet and gold centred wheels. It really did look the part with its simple, but effective additions. Some others opted for Lambostyle doors, non-factory striping and modified body kits.

88

89

If plastic bumpers aren’t your thing, there were plenty of old-school Mustangs on hand too. From the faithfully restored rarities to the mildly modified streeter’s and of course those race car replicas. There certainly was something on show that suited everyone’s taste. By all accounts, the 2022 Anniversary Pony Round-Up was a huge success. I have never seen so many Mustangs gathered in one place, and with no apparent plans for Ford to stop production of the Mustang anytime soon, I reckon the 2023 event could be even bigger again. If you have a Mustang and would like to join in with the clubs activities, just onto their website and become a member - www.nsw.mustang.org.au

Of course, there can be only 8 and those 8 are always mindblowing in their design, construction and impact. In 2022, this again was a true statement.

TODD & JAMOND HAUG Blown Injected 540ci Hemi-powered ‘63 Chev Impala

In Australia, even our toughest genuine street cars don’t have steamroller sized rear rubber; wheelie-bars, enough rollcage to entertain ten small children and a mountain of hardcore motor hanging through the bonnet. Makes you want to pack up and move to the USA where cars like the Haug brother’s homebuilt ’63 Impala SS are legal to drive on the street! It puts a whole new spin on Pro-Street!

Todd and his brother Jamond built up this ‘all-steel’ Impala in their garage at home, aiming directly at the No-Prep Street Racing scene.

Todd and his brother Jamond built up this ‘all-steel’ Impala in their garage at home, aiming directly at the No-Prep Street Racing scene. Under that flat black body sits a mass of tube forming the chassis that has proved to be strong enough to handle the power being shoved through it. Likewise, the interior is all business, surrounded by plenty of tube tied into the chassis to stop the ’63 from twisting itself inside out. Gone are any Impala inclusions, the bench seats replaced with Kirkey alloy seats in the front and tubs in the rear.

AT THE STRIP

TODD & JAMOND HAUG Blown Injected 540ci Hemi-powered ‘63 Chev Impala

Making quite the statement high above the bonnet line, the Whipple blower and PSI hat connect to a 540cube, Hemi backed with a Turbo 400 auto and severely narrowed 9-inch diff. Even though its classified as a street car, that pumped Hemi produces around 2700hp so cruising down to get some bread and milk probably isn’t going to happen. The Haug brothers built this Impala for a purpose – to cover the strip as quickly as possible. Job done…

CRAIG ‘GUSBOY’ INGOLD Twin-Turbo LS Rat Rod Burnout Pickup

Part Rat Rod, part Burnout Ute, Craig ‘Gusboy’ Ingold’s one-off Pickup is certainly a head turner whether its melting its rear tyres on the pad, or sitting parked up at a show. Mounted to a Hilux chassis, the ‘37 Chev cab forms the basis for the radical build that includes lots of one-off bits and pieces. There’s so many custom touches that have been added into the build, that you’ll be going back for a second, third or fourth look!

It may not impress the elite show judges, but does Craig care? Umm, that would be a great big HELL NO! 100

On KILLER Rides THE PAD

CRAIG ‘GUSBOY’ INGOLD Twin-Turbo LS Rat Rod Burnout Pickup

The best part of building something like this is that there are no rules! The more outrageous, the better! Forget the old saying ‘less is more!’, that simply doesn’t cut it here! Check out the interior! Whilst there is no actual upholstery, apart from the hessian bag door trims, the interior has lots of cool addtions such as the Harley fuel tank console with the custom shifter (attached to the 4L60 box), the race seats and the old school case that just happens to contain all of the wiring! Likewise, the engine compartment is filled with what started out as a basic LS-1 but now combines two-turbochargers, dual throttle bodies and a host of one-off fabricated items including the missile shaped air cleaner. It may not impress the elite show judges, but does Gusboy care? Umm, that would be a great big HELL NO! 102

103

On KILLER Rides THE PAD

CRAIG ‘GUSBOY’ INGOLD Twin-Turbo LS Rat Rod Burnout Pickup

Traditionally, Rat Rods are built around their patina’d paintwork, but occassionally, there’s simply no paint to be seen, just like on Craig’s Pickup. Almost all of the metal on the body features surface rust and that includes the dash and around the wooden tray. The body mods are many and include the fabricated rear guards, custom 1921 front fenders, suicide doors and the coolest tailights we’ve seen for a long time. And did you notice the camshafts used to mount the radiator? Like I said, there’s no rules when building this type of car. Sitting still, its cool, but smoking the rear tyres at full noise - well, that’s just damn tough!

There’s so many custom touches that have been added into the build, that you’ll be going back for a second, third or fourth look! 104

SUPERFORMANCE - MORE THAN JUST A SPEED SHOP

If you think that all Superformance does is supply some of the best performance gear on the market, read on. Our Customer requested we build him the coolest car in Australia. The photographs will confirm Superformance has come extremely close to pulling off this request. Starting with a Bog Stock early Ford Falcon the only other Customer specification was for it to be “Super Low” to the point where the owner could collect a can of Beer from the Roof of his car at Shoulder Height. To achieve this, Superformance completed in house a 3D scan of the under Body. From there a completely new Rear Chassis Clip was designed to lay frame on ground and includes Air Bags, custom Four Link and Watts Linkage. Superformance has been Building Nine Inch Differentials since 1978 so this was built in the workshop with Wilwood Disc Brakes and a Tru Trac Centre. Up the Front Superformance again worked their wizardry and created a new Independent Front Suspension with Air Bags and Wilwood Disc Brakes. The Driveline consists of a 347 Cubic inch Windsor mated to a C4 Automatic. The Customer is a Diehard Blue Oval fan so it is all Ford in a Ford. To accommodate all these major underbody mods the Floor Pan is extensively modified but retains the original bench seat inside. The original gauges are supplemented with Autometer Oil, Water and Fuel for better Accuracy. The build has the big Tyre look on the back on the massive 15 x 12 rims. Wheels are Black with an O.E look. The Tailshaft is a work of art and resembles one as used in a lifted 4x4 I.E Cardinal Style. To show off all the amazing Suspension work there is a clear cover on the top of the frame in the rear of the Car which features LED lighting to highlight the Rear Chassis Clip. The Seat, Hood Lining and Floor have all been trimmed with the exterior remaining untouched as per the vehicle owner’s request. So, it is one radical Patina finished ride.
