From the Desk PLUG IN PERFORMANCE – IS THERE AN ELECTRIC ENGINE IN YOUR CARS FUTURE?

Whether you like it or not, the future of performance cars will no doubt feature electric engines. The major factories have already shown the capabilities of the performance end of the electric vehicle with purpose-built drag cars running very low quarter times. But will you make that move? Would you still own a Monaro or XYGT tribute car if it didn’t have a stonking big V8 engine providing the power? Would a silent Torana or Cortina cut it for today’s high-performance car builder? At this year’s SEMA event, there was more than a couple of old-school cruisers repowered with Electric engines and in fact, you can now buy an electric “crate” engine – just in case you want the “green” of a Tesla with the “mean” of a traditional street car. To be honest, if the only option was to add an electric engine to keep our cool cars on the road, I reckon it will be a no-brainer. As car crafters, we have managed to “go with the flow” in regards to rules and regulations surrounding vehicle registrations. Speaking of SEMA, it was great to see the complete opposite of this type of conversion, with a Tesla being kitted out with a turbo charged LS-powerplant. Obviously, some people will fight to the very end… With restrictions starting to lift and more events coming back to every state, I am starting to see many cars out and about every weekend – and how good is that? After what seems like an eternity, the time has come to polish up the paint, replace the fluids, check the tyre pressures and get out on the street to enjoy your rides every chance you can get. And I’m very happy to say that I’ll be right there with you with the Performance Street Car ’62 Chev Belair coupe out on the blacktop at events everywhere… See you on the street,

Paul

ONE-DAY KANDOS EVENT FOR 2022

For many hardcore street car guys and girls, the long weekend in January is all about packing up their car and heading to Kandos in the NSW’s west for three days of car fun that included a big show and shine, grass events and of course burnouts. For those guys, it was a weekend away with mates and cars. Unfortunately, 2022 will see the event reduced to just one day, with the show and shine and burnouts happening in one big day of horsepower. PROJECT X ’57 CHEV RETURNS TO SEMA ELECTRIFIED!

The world’s most famous magazine project car – the ’57 Chev Tudor dubbed Project X, returned to the 2021 SEMA Show sporting an electric engine under the bonnet. The Chev has been rebuilt many times with various looks including the ever-popular Pro-Street, but this time around, it’s all about being part of the electrification trend. Whilst the build was welcomed by some, others seem to be horrified that one of the most well-known Chev’s in the world doesn’t have a V8 up front…

WILL DRAG RACERS BE FORCED BACK TO THE STREETS?

Hi Paul, After all the hard work done with upgrades to Sydney Dragway, I can’t believe things are happening the way they are in regards to the IHRA vs. ANDRA battle. Surely, Sydney Dragway could see out their contract with the IHRA before moving across to ANDRA? All this is doing is holding up racing on the track and forcing people back onto the streets to ace not only illegally, but also in a very dangerous manner. With the Speedway coming together quickly, I wouldn’t be surprised to find some drag racers heading to the roundy-roundy dark side. After all, racing is racing! Lets hope this mess gets sorted sooner rather than later. Karl C Via Messenger G’day Paul, What’s going on in the drag racing scene. All I am seeing on Social Media is the shit storm happening at Sydney Dragway about who gets to sanction events there. From where I sit, the board at Sydney Drgaway need to be sacked immediately. We need a team in place that will not onbly do the right thing for racers, but when they sign a contract, they see it through to the end so racing can keep happening without legal battles holding up proceedings. The last thing we need is to force racers out onto public roads again... Warren B Via Email.

STREET & STRIP - THE ONLY WAY TO GO!

Hi Paul, I have been a fan of Performance Street Car from day dot when Paradise dropped that first issue and its heritage has been built on showing both street and strip cars, so please don’t listen to Andy from last issue who wants to keep the mag full of legit street cars. Whilst I agree there are some wild streeters out there that certainly deserve their place in the magazine, I think adding a couple of strip only cars couldn’t hurt either. As you know its all about getting the right balance and as long as the race cars still resemble a road-going car, it should also get a feature. Just my two cents worth... Darryl K via Email. G’day Darryl, I agree. Whilst you won’t be seeing any funnycars or Top Fuel cars featuring in PSC any time soon, I think that a street-style race car does have the right to be featured in the magazine - and we;ve featured plenty over the years. That trend will continue...

HIGH TECH PERFORMANCE

G’day Paul, I have been following the electric vehcile scene with interest lately and after reading about the EV cars at SEMA, including the famous Project X ‘57 Chev and the crate engine offered by Ford, it makes me wonder just where our scene is heading. To be honest, I’ll fight the move to the very end and are forced into the EV movement in my LX Torana. I can’t imagine a world where you go to a car event and every car is silent! That just deosnt seem right. Is our scene doomed? Damn, I hope not. Johnny K Via Email

PSC ROAD TRIP - THE ULTIMATE EVENT!

Hi Paul, I have been keeping up to date with what’s happening with the upcoming Road Trip and can’t wait to be a part of it. I am working towards having my big block HK Monaro finished in time to bring it along for the entire cruise, and if things go to plan, I should just make it. I can’t wait to hit the road with a few hundred cool cars! This really has the potential to be the ultimate car event in Australia. Bring it on... Mike F Via Messenger G’day Mike. Yes the PSC Road Trip will be a great event and I can’t wait for October to get here. There’s plenty of work happening weekly leading up to the event and when Monday 17th of October rolls around, its on! Like you, I can’t wait!

Hi Johnny, Check out the editorial this issue. I think it’s probably inevitable that at some stage, we will be forced to either conform and fit electric engines, or have or registration cancelled. It will be a sad day as I love a big thumping V8 engine. All I can suggest it enjoy it as much as you can, while you can...

Hopefully, by the time this is online, the division at Sydney Dragway will be sorted and a return to racing will be back on the cards again... 18

! T R A E H E V A R B PRO-STREET RESTORATIONS - V8 GEMINI SEDAN WORDS – PAUL BECK PICS – PRO-STREET RESTORATIONS

20-something years ago the Gemini made its first appearance at Pro-Street Restorations with the then owner wanting the engine bay filled with a rotary engine backed by a 5-speed box. It was also at this time that the black with blue pearl paint was added to the refreshed bodywork. Long story short, after the owner refused to pay the bill, the Gemini became the property of Pro-Street Restorations and eventually was sold off to recoup the expenses owing.

You can imagine Beachy’s surprise when the new owner of the Gemini contacted him to see if he was interested in completing the build he started all those years ago! This time around, the Gemini arrived without its 13B and 5-speed combo – the new owner insisting the Gemini needed eight cylinders up front. Wanting to keep it all Holden by dropping in an LS, Beachy told him that it’s no longer a Holden and for legal reasons, the capacity needed to be 5.0-litres maximum, so a 5-litre Ford Windsor backed by a four-speed auto was purchased.

Although the 20-year old body and paint had held up extremely well, most panels either had some stone chips or small dents in them...

22

But before the foreign engine and box were to find their way into the small Gemini engine bay, Beachy had to make some suitable upgrades including a Southern Chassis Works independent front end with tube control arms, Viking coil-overs, and 400mm Wilwood brakes along with a fabricated firewall and new, larger trans tunnel to accommodate the larger 4-speed auto. New chassis connectors will be fitted to tie both ends together along with a new floor. The steering now features a custom rack and pinion setup by Erebus Garage. Out the back, there’s a Pro-Street styled 4-link locating the narrowed and braced 9-inch diff that houses 35-spline axles, and Viking coil-over shocks. Six-spot and four-spot caliper clamp each 400mm Wilwood disc brake and live inside polished 18x7 and 18x10-inch Simmons wheels.

23

Body wise, the rear quarters have been stretched to fit the massive 315/35/18 tyres, but apart from that, the body is just how the factory had intended, minus the badges and mouldings fitted when new. Although the 20-year old body and paint had held up extremely well, most panels either had some stone chips or small dents in them, but that will be rectified when Beachy and the boys spend time bringing the sheet metal back to new before applying fresh coats of the same black with blue pearl colour.

As with any project of this enormity, the finish line is still a far way off, but once it is done, not only will it be one of the toughest Gemini’s around, there’s a fair bet it won’t be back in Pro-Street Restorations again any time soon… 24

MODERN

e l c s u M

We’ve seen all kinds of HQ Monaro builds over the years from Tuff-Street to Pro-Street. Tony Sharp took his humble HQ to the next level adding lots of modern refinements inside and out!

TONY SHARP - 1972 HQ MONARO WORDS – Paul Beck PICS - Jimmy Tee Photography

26

27

As an impressionable 18-year old apprentice carpenter, Tony was awe struck when he first saw Dave Bennett’s injected big block and tubbed HQ Monaro. With its chrome injection stacks hanging through the bonnet, the big and little rubber and typical Pro-Street stance, the Monaro quickly became the “I want one” car for Tony. With limited funds available, it took Tony until 1990 when he got serious about starting his own Monaro project. He found a wreck for sale for just $500, with no front sheet metal, no engine and no trans. For Tony it was the perfect

candidate, but not everyone shared his vision. After being told time and time again that the car wasn’t worth saving, he parked the rolling shell at his parents place whilst he spent some time in the mines earning the big bucks to pour into the build of the Monaro. The Monaro was forgotten about whilst Tony travelled around Australia and around the world living the life. Then in 2007, yes 17-years after it got locked away at Mum and Dad’s, Tony found out that old shell was now worth around $20,000. So, the time had come for the build to finally start.

Unless you know the history of the car, chances are there’s some nasty surprises hiding under the old paint. 28

29

Doing bodywork on an old, neglected car is fraught with danger. Unless you know the history of the car, chances are there’s some nasty surprises hiding under the old paint. So, with that in mind, finding the right people to do the best job possible can be a hard task – something that Tony knows all too well. “I met a lot of people who said they could help me reach my goal, but many just ripped me off. One panel beater even filled a hole with silicone before painting over it!”, Tony told us. Other problems encountered were shops going out of business due to the global financial crisis. Thinking that all hope was lost, a friend introduced Tony to his mate, Charlie, who just happened to be a pro at panel work. Charlie got stuck into removing the

rust and other body imperfections before the team at Motorvation laid on the new colour. The Monaro’s heritage has been kept in place on the exterior, with the exception of a piece of bonnet steel removed for some engine hardware. Tony did purchase a WB Statesman front end to go onto the Monaro, but his Mum put paid to that idea when she reversed over it in the garage when the Monaro was in storage. To be honest, the factory front suits the car much better anyway. With the bodywork complete, Tony had Justin at Motorvation lay down the Nitro blue, usually seen on late model XR Falcons. To compliment the base colour, the factory styled GTS stripes were added in a different shade with lots of flake to make them stand out!

The Monaro was forgotten about whilst Tony travelled around Australia and around the world living the life.

Inside, it’s more Commodore than HQ. Somewhere along the way, Tony had decided to update the interior and added some late model technology into the 70’s Holden. With that plan in his mind, he collaborated with Andrew Crawford at Garage Days to rework a complete VY Commodore innards to fit the HQ. And not just the seats, but also the complete dash, console and door trims to make the whole lot flow properly and look factory fitted. Tony said it wasn’t as daunting as they first thought it would be. In fact, the dash was a relatively easy fit! Charlie returned to redo the entire under dash workings to ensure when the key was turned, everything did what it should. With the boys happy with the fit, it was up to Cam at Cam’s Custom Auto’s to retrim the interior in a mix of black leather and grey suede with a splash of colour added to the console surround. The front seats even feature the Sharp family crest embroidered into them! Not only does the updated trim look amazing, but it all works just how it should – with the exception of the airbag in the steering wheel. 30

31

The high-tech wizardry continues in the smoothed off engine bay. With a view dominated by the highly polished 2.8-litre Whipple supercharger that Tony imported from the USA, the HQ has been repowered by an LS3 that has been pieced together by Cavehill Engines. With a cubic capacity of 383-cubic inches, the aluminium block has been filled with the right gear for maximum but reliable performance, and on a strict diet of 98-octane fuel, the pumped LS produced a staggering 800hp – more than enough to put the muscle in this old muscle car. And with colour-coded rocker covers, metres of braided line, a custom air-cleaner set-up and lots of polished alloy, this engine bay isn’t just about horsepower. Using the LS-engine offered plenty of choices for Tony when it came time for

32

a transmission. The logical choice is the 4L80E – the six-speed auto trans that are a common sight behind LS-engines and are easily found. Tony had the box fitted with a 2800 stall converter using a CRS conversion kit which had to be modified to accept the 3-inch dual exhaust system that helps the blown engine breathe so much better. Down the back, there’s a 9-inch diff fitted with a Truetrac 3.55-geared centre that handles the new power with ease. Like the interior, the braking system is all VY Commodore too with the discs, calipers and master cylinder all adapted from the later model Holden, as was the steering. Suspension wise, the standard issue springs and shocks are now just a memory with Koni shocks and lowered springs fitted to each corner in behind the 17x7 and 17x10 KWC Billet rims.

Tony knows full well how much the HQ has gobbled up, but in an effort to keep his home life happy, is keeping that amount to himself.

33

Like any build of this size, Tony’s encountered plenty of problems along the way. The hardest part was finding the right people to get involved in the build. During the construction, Tony has learned plenty of lessons and has some advice for those looking at kicking of a full-tilt build themselves. “I suggest joining a car club and logging on to some discussion boards to get advice from other car owners who have been down this road before, and get second opinions as well. Learn from people’s mistakes and things should go relatively smoothly.” Great advice! The

build consumed around 13-years of work and an undisclosed amount of cash to get to this point. Tony knows full well how much the HQ has gobbled up, but in an effort to keep his home life happy, is keeping that amount to himself. One thing is assured though, all of the hassles, money and time spent creating the Monaro was all forgotten when he rolled into St Kilda for its first show. With the blown LS3 exposed and the doors open to show off the restyled interior, Tony’s HQ was a massive hit all day. I’m sure that’s not the last we’ll see of this high-tech Holden…

...on a strict diet of 98-octane fuel, the pumped LS produced a staggering 800hp... THANKS TO: Tim Kollosche and Justin at Motorvation Custom Paint and Panel. Andrew Crawford at Garage Days. Cam at Cam’s Custom Auto’s. Steve at Mcal. Dean Lillie at Ravage. Mum and Dad for the use of the home garage for all those years. My wife for her patience and last but by no means least, Charlie Goodall who fixed everyone else’s mistakes and made all that new gear work how it should. Without Charlie, this build would still be ongoing… 34

SOUTHERN Stars South Australia’s premier car show, the Extreme Auto Expo, once again gathered together a bevy of high-powered, street, strip and show cars for all to enjoy!

40

EXTREME AUTO EXPO WAYVILLE SHOWGROUND, ADELAIDE WORDS – PAUL BECK / PICS - JOE CRISPIN

The Extreme Auto Expo isn’t like most other indoor car shows. Sure, it has some of the best cars and bikes on display and a heap of traders showcasing their latest and greatest products, but what sets this event apart is that it kicks off at 5pm on Friday and keeps the doors open for four hours before opening the doors on Saturday at 10am until 8pm, leaving Sunday as a pack up day for those who need to travel any sort of distance. And it works. Not only does it cut back the fee’s associated with hiring such a venue, but it still offers plenty of time for spectators to come and see what’s on offer at the event. As he has done in previous years, event promoter, Geof Tartoosie handed out a free Hot Wheels car to every child that ventured out to the show! What a great initiative!

By the time the doors finally flung open to the public at 10am, the outdoor show and shine was in full swing, acting as a precursor for what was waiting undercover. 41

BRENTON DALWOOD - 1935 FORD COUPE

Amongst the cars unveiled was Brenton Dalwood’s absolutely stunning ’35 Ford Coupe. Looking brilliant in its candy orange colour, the ’35 not only brained everyone when the covers were taken off for the first time, but it also impressed the judges winning a gaggle of awards including; Best Interior, Best Engine Bay, Best Undercarriage, Best Body, Best Paint, Best Display, 1st in the Elite Top 5 and one of the spots for MotorEx. That’s quite a haul!

42

The Extreme Auto Expo isn’t just one event – there are several shows within the show. Apart from the main game, Friday also had the Aussie Muscle Car Cruisers arrive for an outdoor show and shine as the event opened, before leaving the venue for their cruise, providing quite the show of colour and sound as they made their way from the showgrounds, bringing a close to the event on the Friday night. Saturday was always going to be the big day for the Extreme Auto Expo. With the Wayville and Ridley Pavilions jam-packed with some of the finest cars on show, those heading to the venue were going to be gob-smacked with the offerings indoors. By the time the doors finally flung open to the public at 10am, the outdoor show and shine was in full swing, acting as a precursor for what

was waiting undercover. As with previous years, the Extreme Auto Expo acts as the host for the start of the annual Zippel Cruise which sees hundreds of American cars roll into the venue mid-afternoon for yet another display of vehicles, before departing on their cruise around 7.30pm. Always a highlight of the event, this year’s cruise didn’t disappoint.

43

JOE ESPOSITO - 1968 CHEV CAMARO

Joe Esposito’s stunning twin-turbo 615-cube big block Camaro was hard to miss with its eye-catching bright orange paint. Rolling on black Billet Specialities rims (the rears measuring a massive 20x18inches!), the Camaro was one of the highlights at this years Extreme Auto Expo. Joe didn’t go home empty-handed, his Camaro earning Runner-Up in Best Engine Bay and Best Undercarriage, 2nd in the Elite Top 5 and one of the MotorEx invites!

In fact, many comments I saw online have said that this year, the 15th staging of the Extreme Auto Expo, was by far the best yet. The judges had spent plenty of time going over the cars on display both inside and outdoors, and the first of the presentations were held at midday where the awards were handed out for the Elite cars, followed by the Promo Girls on stage. Come 3.30pm and it was time to find out who won what for the Show and Shine. The Extreme Trophy Presentations happened at 6.30pm, also held inside the Wayville building. For a full list of winners, check out the website at www.extremeautoexpo.com.au

44

45

One section of the event is relatively new, but always attracts attention. Geof introduced a Barn Find Auction into the running of the Extreme Auto Expo, giving those looking for a new project, the opportunity to swap some cash for a car that has been locked away for some time. Ten special interest vehicles were put up for auction, with the bidding being fast and furious. It’s a part of the event that makes this show unique, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing others do something similar down the track.

As he has done in previous years, event promoter, Geof Tartoosie handed out a free Hot Wheels car to every child that ventured out to the show! What a great initiative!

46

47

MATT MITCHELL - 1971 PLYMOUTH CUDA

The Mopar fans weren’t left out this year either, with Matt Mitchell’s amazing Cuda dropping jaws left, right and centre. Powered by an EFI, 6.4-litre (392-cubes in the old money) Hemi, the Cuda has been set-up with hand-controls so that Matt can enjoy the coupe after swapping over from his wheelchair. Covered in a slick coat of PPG Licorice, the Cuda scored 3rd in the Elite Top 5, Runner-Up Best Paint, Runner-Up Best Body and the second MotorEx invite in the Street Machine category.

By 8pm, the 2021 Extreme Auto Expo had come to an end. Geof and his team had, yet again, had put together an event that outshone the previous years. In fact, many comments I saw online have said that this year, the 15th staging of the Extreme Auto Expo, was by far the best yet. With a bit of luck, 2022 should see more interstate cars head to SA for the event, where I am sure, the Extreme Auto Expo will continue its trend of being South Australia’s best custom car event!

UNWANTED

PRIZE

What started as a show car build, soon became an unwanted project. Pete Murphy just happened to be in the right place at the right time to take on his great mates former build.

Pete Murphy - 1967 XR Falcon Ute Words / Pics - Paul Beck 50

51

Pete Murphy has had his hands all over many of Australia’s top show cars. As owner of Get Buffed, Pete has been commissioned to prepare many show cars paint work in readiness for displays all across Australia and was the man behind keeping Mario Colalillo’s Cadillac in pristine condition when it toured around the USA. He has also spent plenty of times in workshops making their paint jobs that much better and it was in one of those workshops where he came across this XR Ute that was close to being finished. The owner

52

at the time, who had previously campaigned a stunning silver FC Holden Ute on the show scene with plenty of success, was well into this build at Down Town Kustoms when he decided he had had enough of building cars and offered his long-time mate, Pete, who realised the deal was just too good to pass up. Knowing just how much money had been pumped into the build so far and how little he would need to add to complete the build, Pete quickly reached for his wallet and the deal was done.

Body wise, the Falcon may look like every other XR Falcon Ute, but there’s a few subtle changes added to make you wonder just what has been changed.

53

As owner of Get Buffed, Pete has been commissioned to prepare many show cars paint work in readiness for displays all across Australia... Body wise, the Falcon may look like every other XR Falcon Ute, but there’s a few subtle changes added to make you wonder just what has been changed. Most obvious is the rolled pan rear that replaces the factory fitted bumper, but not so in your face are the one-piece billet taillight surrounds that keep the LED lights in place. The flush tonneau cover completes the rework of the rear end. Up front, the Shaker scoop is a new addition and the chrome work on the front bar has been replaced by the body colour. That new colour, by the way, is from the dark side and could be found on a number of HK Holden’s when the Silver Mink box was ticked. The paint covers ultra-sharp lines that have had plenty of hours put into them getting them just right. Finishing off the exterior visuals are 18 and 19-inch Intro billets.

As you’d expect with a build of this quality, the underside is finished off just a nicely as the top side – though that doesn’t stop Pete from using the Ute in any kind of weather. In fact, right near the end of the photo shoot, the heavens opened up and Pete made the trip home in the rain, proving he bought the Ute to drive! Making it drive so much better is a host of RRS gear including the springs, shocks, and calipers that clamp over the big disc rotors. 54

55

Inside, it’s just as classy. Using the factory bucket seats as the basis for the retrim, they are probably the only part that is factory XR used. Now covered in black leather, with door trims to match, the interior is practical as well as first class. From the driver’s position, the billet wheel comes into view, as does the full custom dash facia sitting neatly inside the Ford panel, with no less than five classic styled gauges supplying Pete all the info he needs. There are more billet accessories added to the clutch, brake and accelerator pedals.

56

Under that shaker scoop sits plenty of horsepower in amongst a surgically clean engine bay. Built by Sam at Westend Performance, the 351-cube Cleveland is chock full of top shelf gear inside the prepped block to form the basis for the powerhouse. On top of the tuff bottom end, sits a pair of alloy heads, Edelbrock intake and big cfm single carb. Plenty of spark is provided by the MSD ignition system and a pair of custom headers and dual system dumps the spent gases. Making around 650hp, this Clevo ensures this Ute hauls big time! All that power runs through a Tremec 5-speed through to a four-linked 9-inch diff.

57

Pete is suitably impressed with how the Ute has come out and enjoys every minute he spends behind the wheel, and what makes it that better is that his much-loved partner Barbara loves it just as much! After spending so much time making sure everyone else’s cars are looking their absolute best, he now puts the same effort into his own ride. And you’d think that owning such a slick Falcon Ute would see Pete more than content to cruise it forever, that’s not necessarily the case. As a member of the prestigious Outkasts Car Club, he is surrounded by some of

the coolest rides in the country, and that group of cars is constantly growing and changing as its members embark on new projects or import something unique from the USA. With that in mind, you get the feeling Pete is always looking for that next special set of wheels to call his own, which means that if the right offer comes along, he’ll gladly part company with the XR. If you think that this Falcon would look awesome in your garage, and you have plenty of spare cash laying around, reach out to Pete at www.getbuffed.com.au and make him an offer!

In the 80’s, Ben Attard’s Dad built a tough blown/injected Candy Red Pro-Street Cortina known as AWSOME. Obviously, the apple doesn’t fall far from the Attard family tree! 60

BEN ATTARD - HZ HOLDEN KINGSWOOD WORDS / PICS – Paul Beck

61

We’ve all heard the stories of buying a second-hand car only to find it has 10-kilos of bog in every panel with rust rotting away behind that, an engine full of additives to stop it from rattling inside out and suspension that rode like a horse and buggy. Like many, I’ve been down that road myself! This however, is a story that is the complete opposite. Ben had been into cars for as long as he could remember, following his Dad Emanuel’s footsteps. Having found this HZ in a nearby suburb, Ben checked it out and to his surprise, found the HZ to be a one-owner car complete with log books. Having left his wallet at home in his rush to get out the door, the lady offered Ben $20 for fuel and told him to take the car and show his Dad! You certainly wouldn’t find that trust today! Excited about this being his first car, Ben and his Dad gave it a thorough look over and when his Dad gave

62

him the thumbs up, the deal was sealed. Right from the outset, Ben had a plan in mind that would see the HZ go from family hack, to tough street…eventually. Like any build of this size, things don’t happen quickly, especially when the build involves big horsepower running gear, candy paint and acres of leather trim. The body retains its factory look but without the badges, mouldings, door and boot locks and the external mirrors. Once coated in bright red, Ben employed 2SUS Custom Paint to transform the exterior look from sedate to sensational. Whilst Basa and Fuf spent time removing the old paint and relieving the body of any imperfections, Ben had settled on the colour, Brandy Wine from House of Kolor. The colour was laid on beautifully over the smoothed panels and offers a range of shades depending on the light. It truly is a stunning colour.

Showing his patriotic side, Ben opted to keep his HZ all Holden by using a stroked version of the all Aussie V8.

63

Inside, in stark contrast to the candy coloured body, sits an award-winning interior trimmed by Darren and Jay at House of Trim. Light grey leather and suede has been used exclusively throughout the interior covered the reshaped original HZ seats, restyled door trims and a modified dash that now houses just enough AutoMeter gauges to keep Ben up to date with what’s happening around him. Just in front of the dash sits a billet steering wheel that compliments the billet window winders and the B&M shifter surround that has been adapted to the factory console. Lighting the interior comes from downlights incorporated into the headlining, offering a brighter

64

solution than the old centre light – the same treatment continues through to the boot area. Ben also added a substantial Pioneer sound system, incorporating four speakers and two big 1200watt amps to provide the tunes when cruising with the family. Completing the interior part of the build is a colour-matched, fourpoint roll cage with side intrusion bars that was fabricated by the team at Westside Mufflers who also handled the mini-tubs that now feature on the HZ’s underside, allowing those 15x10 Weld Wheels and Hoosier rubber to tuck firmly up under the modified guards. In true Pro-Street fashion, the fronts measure just 15x4 with the right sized Bridgestone rubber.

Having found this HZ in a nearby suburb, Ben checked it out and to his surprise, found the HZ to be a one-owner car complete with log books.

65

Showing his patriotic side, Ben opted to keep his HZ all Holden by using a stroked version of the all Aussie V8. Starting with 308 cubes, the engine was a work in progress, that battled him constantly before he spoke to Aaron at APM who steered him in the right direction and pieced together the tough Holden stroker. Now sporting 383-cubes, the power figure was always going to be amazing. The main feature of the new bottom end is the COME Racing forged steel stroker crank that works in with the rest of the gear to increase the cubic capacity. The alloy heads are also from COME Racing

and have been given the once over to ensure they are up to the task of providing as much horsepower as possible. Wanting to keep the engine aspirated, Ben added a CNC-machined tunnel ram intake that holds to 750 Demon carbs that feed plenty of high-octane pump fuel through the tough Holden-based engine producing a staggering 615hp. There’s more in it if Ben decides to add some more exotic fuel, but insists this is a street car so pump fuel is a necessity. A complete MSD ignition system fires the angry engine into life while a pair of headers push the gases rearwards through the dual 3.5-inch exhaust system.

Completing the interior part of the build is a colour-matched, four-point roll cage with side intrusion bars...

Backing the engine is a purpose-built Turbo 400 fronted by a 4500rpm Dominator converter that feeds the power through a 4-inch chromoly tailshaft to the braced, sheet-metal 9-inch diff that’s located via a four-link with QA1 adjustable coil-overs. Wilwood discs and calipers provide plenty of braking power. Up front, the standard Holden gear has been given the flick for a pair of 90/10 shocks, and PBR slotted rotors and calipers. 66

67

The build has taken some 15-years to complete to this level so far and of course, there’s been plenty of problems encountered along the way, but no that Ben gets to cruise the car with his family onboard, those issues are just a distant memory now. Ben intends to use the HZ as much as he can and there’s some show appearances on the agenda, along with a return to the race track again to see how the new engine combo performs. And just as Ben did with his Dad, I have no doubt that Ben’s three ‘car-mad’ boy’s will be planning their own candy-coloured creations soon!

There’s more in it if Ben decides to add some more exotic fuel, but insists this is a street car so pump fuel is a necessity.

THANKS TO: Builds like this don’t happen without the help of some very special people including my three boys and understanding wife Mellisa; Mum and Dad for the space in the home garage to start the build. Thanks also to Mario at Chipping Norton Auto Electrical, Tony at Tony’s Mufflers; Gary and his two sons at All Aluminium Welding. The team at 2SUS Custom Paint; Aaron at APM; Darren and Jay at House of Trim; and last but not least, my ‘Guidance Counsellor, Steve Azzopardi who was always there for me! Thanks everyone! 68

BRIGHT ROD RUN WORDS – PAUL BECK PICS – CHAD SILVEY

So officially, the annual Bright Rod Run had fallen victim to Covid 19. Yep, officially it was canned for 2021. But, someone decided they were still going to head to the town in their cool car regardless. That person told a mate, then they told a mate and before you knew it, the town flooded with high-powered cars! Welcome to the unofficial Bright Rod Run… 72

73

It may still be referred to as the Bright Rod Run, but these days, there’s just as many highpowered muscle cars heading to the small rural town of Bright for a long weekend of cruising and having fun with cars. Usually known for its wineries and rich gold rush history, for a few days each year, the small town in amongst the Victoria show fields region becomes home for hundreds of car enthusiasts as they take over the town for the annual event. So popular is the run, that accommodation is booked for years in advance and those that missed out, find themselves making up to a 1.5-hour trek to the event from other areas outside of the region.

Pro-Street cars were in abundance as well as low-slung cruisers, traditional styled Hot Rods and the flavour of the month, patina-covered early Pickups.

74

75

The fact that there was any kind of modified car action happening at Bright this year show just how resilient car owners are. With Victoria suffering the longest lockdown of any Australian state, the organisers of the event actually pulled the pin due to Government restrictions surrounding Covid19. But with those restrictions lifted and the VIC/NSW borders reopened just in time for what would have been the event weekend, hundreds of car lovers packed up their rides and headed for a weekend away in Bright – unofficially, of course!

76

It may still be referred to as the Bright Rod Run, but these days, there’s just as many high-powered muscle cars heading to the small rural town of Bright...

77

Once in the centre of Bright itself, the tree-lined streets are overflowing with all kinds of cool, custom and collectable cars that circled the town creating one hell of a cruise time. Pro-Street cars were in abundance as well low-slung cruisers, traditional styled Hot Rods and the flavour of the month, patina-covered early Pickups. Combine those with a host of cool street cars and you have the makings of one of the biggest events Bright has ever seen. And didn’t the crowds love it. In some area’s the people lining up to watch the cruising were five or six deep – all trying to get a great vantage point to not only see the cars, but feel the rumble as they idled by.

In some area’s the people lining up to watch the cruising were five or six deep...

78

79

Whilst the weather forecast didn’t look promising with rain predicted for most of the weekend, those that took the chance and headed out anyway were lucky enough to get a lot of sunshine before a storm made its way through the region, slowing but not stopping, the cruising for just a short while.

Once in the centre of Bright itself, the tree-lined streets are overflowing with all kinds of cool, custom and collectable cars...

80

81

...and before you knew it, the town flooded with high-powered cars!

Our man Chad Silvey was fortunate enough to be able to be part of the Bright Rod Run this year and snapped plenty of great pics of the cars in attendance for you to enjoy. Whilst this years event was not the official Bright Rod Run, we are hoping that things get back to normal next year ensuring the 2022 Bright Rod Run will be the largest to date. Now to try to get some accommodation sorted. Anyone not needing their room?

GRANT PECK - 1934 FORD COUPE WORDS / PICS – PAUL BECK

E R B I F S S A CL

When you decide to build your first custom car, might as well make it an elite level Hot Rod! 84

85

Grant Peck spent much of his adult life in the Navy and as such, he spent very little time at home. So even though he has always had an interest in custom cars, it took a considerable amount of time before he could put the process into action, but when he did, the results have been amazing. For his very first custom build, Grant decided a ’34 3-window Ford coupe was the car for him. He promptly placed an order with Deuce Customs for one of their 3-inch chopped body that was shipped to Andy’s Restorations along with a matching chassis, that was purchased by Grant’s wife for him, to be mated together to create the platform for what was going to be a long build. Right from

86

the outset, Grant wanted his coupe to be one that was capable of regular driving, so the plan wasn’t to go over the top with wild modifications that meant any type of cruising was going to be a battle. With that in mind, the chassis was kept userfriendly with a four-bar set-up added to locate the 9-inch diff and coil-over shocks. At the other end, there’s a Rod Tech front end that helps the ’34 steer like a newer model car. Disc brakes have been added to each corner – Commodore to the front and Ford on the rear and each lives inside Intro Indies wheels measuring 17x7 and 18x8-inches. Again, the wheel and tyre combo ensure that Grant can cruise the coupe anywhere at any time…

One of the great things about building a hot rod is the options available when it comes to adding a driveline. It really is up to your imagination.

87

Covering the detailed chassis is the fibreglass body that was prepped at Andy’s Restorations in readiness for colour. Grant wanted something a little different when it came time to choose the colour. He didn’t want something that had been done a hundred times before. That ruled out black, blue, red and yellow – not that there’s anything wrong with those hues, it’s just that Grant wanted to stand out in a crowd of coupes. In the end, he decided on a Subaru colour called Camellia Red Pearl, that certainly gives the ’34 a unique look. Whilst Andy’s laid on the base coat, the rolling body was sent to Ronnie Tarabay for finishing at Winners Circle Refinishes in Campbelltown where Joe Webb was called in to lay on the one-off graphics to each side and also the underside. Once Joe had finished, the clear coats were added giving the body a silky-smooth coat that looks like it was poured over the body like a fine red wine…

Where Grant lives on the NSW south coast, it just so happens that one of the country’s best motor trimmers lives in the same region, so you’d be crazy not to have them handle the stitch work. Grant sat down with Matt at Inside Rides and worked out a design and colour scheme that would not only compliment the body colour, but would turn the inside into a work of art. The custom seats, moulded door trims, floors, centre console and one-piece headliner was all covered in a mix of tan leather and suede in a couple of different shades and material type. New seat belts were installed along with a Dakota Digital dash, Pioneer sound system with hidden speakers (there’s two subs behind the seats) and an array of billet gear from the air vents, window buttons, steering column and half-wrap steering wheel. As you’d expect, the interior work is top shelf. 88

89

One of the great things about building a hot rod is the options available when it comes to adding a driveline. It really is up to your imagination. Blown big blocks, twin turbo anything, high-tech late model technology – anything goes. For Grant though, staying true to making his ’34 ultra-reliable for cruising meant keeping the horsepower under control. It’s no good having 1500hp if you have to have someone follow you in a Ute with a drum of high-octane fuel just to go to a show. To ensure there were no hassles like that to deal with, Grant opted for a single-carb,

pump-fuel small block Chev sporting 350-cubes. The engine makes good usable power thanks to the alloy heads, 600cfm Holley, Edelbrock intake and custom exhaust system. Like every other part of the build, the engine and its surroundings are detailed to the enth-degree with its painted and graphic-clad rocker covers and air cleaner the main features. A Turbo 400 auto built by Hume Performance and fronted with a 2500rpm converter is connected to the small block and sends the power through to the 4.11-geared rear end.

For his very first custom build, Grant decided a ’34 3-window Ford coupe was the car for him.

After a massive 14-year build period, where Grant has had to deal with some health issues, the Coupe made its debut at the 2017 at MotorEx were it scored a Pinnacle award. It’s also scored a place in the Top 20 at Killer Rides Live in 2018. More recently, whilst Grant was out of action, his family and some great mates all got together and got the Coupe sorted so that it could secure some hot rod rego. Grant had no idea what was going on and didn’t even know that car wasn’t in the shed. His young Grandson almost spilled the beans, but stopped short of telling him what was actually happening. You can imagine how wide Grant’s smile was when he did find out the secret that they had been keeping… 90

F O E R A BEW R E P A E R THE Daniel Andrew and his street-tough Charger have been through plenty of hard times – some of which Daniel reckons could have been the death of him. Thankfully, the end result is a happy one…

DANIEL ANDREW - 1976 VK770 CHARGER WORDS / PICS – PAUL BECK 92

93

After swapping a E55 VJ Charger for a highly modified VG 4-door Pacer, Dan had yearned for another Charger and found this one on the Central Coast of NSW. At that stage, it was hidden under bed sheets and mattresses in a garage with an old black paint job from an earlier era in its street machining past and, as you’d expect, it was sporting some rust in all of the usual places. Whilst most would have discarded the coupe in search for something else, Dan could see the potential. The 40-minute drive home was an eventful one as the rain washed years of built-up dirt across the windscreen, limiting vision and almost causing Dan to come to grief at a roundabout – one of many ‘fun’ times Dan would go on to share with the Charger. There was a mishap around 10 months later that led to some damage down the left-hand side, causing the build to begin – a process that would see work start and stop for almost 13-years while Dan dragged the car from house to house in primer!

Although the engine hasn’t been dyno’d as yet, there’s little doubt that tough small block will produce some big numbers for street duties! Thanks to Rod Cordingley at Rod’s Custom Restorations, the Charger’s body has been given a new lease on life. Those primer days are well and truly over with Rod laying down a smooth coat of PPG Jet Black with a Lilac Pearl overlay to make the colour that much more special. Before any colour found its way onto the sheet metal, Rod had the task of removing all of the rust area’s as well as treating the body to a few subtle changes including the removal of the boot lock and all of the holes left behind from the ‘never to return’ badges. The body lines over the ducktail are now a thing of the past, as are the holes in the engine bay and the ashtray in the dash. Finishing up the body work was a complete smoothing of the engine bay and firewall. 94

95

That new look engine bay now houses six-point-one litres of tough Chrysler small block, that Dan purchased as a built short engine. Knowing he didn’t want to skimp on engine parts, Dan spent the next five years getting the gear he wanted, before piecing the rest of the engine together himself – the first engine he has attempted, and with over 9000-klms on it, the 371-cube engine hasn’t missed a beat! The 60-over, US-spec 360 bottom end now features a balanced standard crank that swings stock rods and SP 4.060 flat top hypereutectic pistons wrapped in moly rings. The cam of choice is a Mopar-spec flat tappet item that works in with the Comp Cams hydraulic lifters. A Miloden sump covers up all of the good gear. Up top, the aluminium Edelbrock RPM heads were bolted to the bottom end straight out of the box – leaving plenty of room for future improvements if needed. Filling the gap between the heads is an Edelbrock airgap RPM dual-plane intake holding a single 750cfm Brawler double-pumper carb.

That new look engine bay now houses six-point-one litres of tough Chrysler small block...

A complete ICE ignition system provides the firepower and when the spark ignites, the Pacemaker headers show the gases the door via a dual 3-inch stainless system that cuts off at the diff. Although the engine hasn’t been dyno’d as yet, there’s little doubt that tough small block will produce some big numbers for street duties! A 727 Torqueflite auto backs the engine and relies on a manual valve body, reverse shift and 3000rpm B&M converter to get the power down to the 9-inch diff. And with a true-trac 3.7-geared centre, 31-spline Currie axles, Strange race case, Daytona pinion support and 1350 yoke, there’s no chance there will be a problem getting that grunt to the tyres. 96

97

Speaking of the rear tyres, the 255/50 Mickey Thompson rubber is mounted to the seldom seen, but oh-so-cool ‘Black Edition’ Weld Draglite wheels. Measuring 15x7 and 15x8, the wheels really do give the Charger a sinister look. The wheels hide the drilled and slotted discs on the front and drum brakes on the rear. KYB shocks have been added to each corner and help the Valiant handle much better for now. Inside, it’s a case of less is more. Daniel has kept the original interior

98

in place and has had it retrimmed to suit the new, tough look. The door tops feature imitation snake skin which wraps around the parcel shelf as well. Daniel even tried his hand at being an interior designer, making the door trims and kick panels! The factory console has been modified to accept the B&M Quicksilver shifter, whilst the dash has been upgraded with an assortment of AutoMeter gauges. Daniel never fitted a stereo, as he reckons he’d never hear it anyway!

Those primer days are well and truly over with Rod laying down a smooth coat of PPG Jet Black with a Lilac Pearl overlay...

99

Anyone that has attempted a full, ground-up build will testify that the job at hand can be frustrating to say the least. Whilst the build has consumed more than 13-years of Daniels time and a considerable amount of the folding stuff, the Valiant is still not completely finished. The brakes and suspension are still to get upgraded and there’s a pair of 300C bucket seats that just may find their way into the cabin, but for now, Daniel is just enjoying the Charger as much as he can. Sure, there’s been plenty of times where Daniel has thrown his hands in the air and had wanted to walk away from it, but is now happy he persevered with it. Turning the key to fire up the small block, or getting the thumbs up from onlookers makes all of those hassles just a memory. See, the Reaper can be a good thing after all…
