Almost 30-years after being completed, here’s proof that Pro-Street is still KING!
From the Desk STREET OR STRIP CARS? WHAT DO YOU PREFER TO SEE? I was a little worried about running Steve Grima’s Camaro on the cover of Issue #34. Why? Well, we all know there’s people out there hiding behind their keyboards just waiting for a reason to have a whinge about something - or everything, which is sometimes the case. I really was expecting to get some feedback having a go for running a car on the cover that wasn’t technically a street car, when the mast head clearly says Performance Street Car. But, I couldn’t have been more wrong. It seems that like me, you guys and girls are into tough cars. Whether they are 100% legal for street use of not doesn’t seem to matter. Sure, there were a couple of people who took the time to send a message saying that whilst they loved the Camaro, they would prefer to keep the magazine predominantly street-car based, and I completely understand where they are coming from. But I also think that there are some awesome drag cars that resemble street cars and should have a place in the magazine as well. What do you think? I can’t begin to tell you how great it is to be able to spend time at events again. Whilst I did miss the Powercruise in Sydney, I was in my element at the Bathurst Autofest. There were more cars than ever and the laid back atmosphere the Autofest events bring, was more than evident by the good times being had by the entrants. Check out the huge coverage in this issue. Also featured is the King of the Streets Drag meet from Heathcote Park Raceway and the annual Showcars Melbourne event. I’ve also booked the dates for my own show too! Yep, Killer Rides Live returns to the Illawarra Hockey Centre over the weekend of August 21/22! More details inside. I hope you enjoy this issue of Performance Street Car – Australia’s Toughest Car Magazine! See you on the street…

WHAT’S HAPPENING OOOPS, MY BAD...
Last issue was one of those months that produced plenty of headaches with wet weather, feature car shoots not going to plan etc, and when times are like that, inevitably, mistakes get made and that’s what happened with the feature on Nick Novak’s Mustang. I had amended the story a few times and then, in my haste, uploaded the version that didn’t acknowledge Jason Mansweto’s involvement in the construction of the car. Not only did Jason build the big horsepower aspirated small block, but had a hand in the entire driveline and made it all work how it should. My sincere apologies to Nick and Jason for the balls-up on adding the wrong version of the story…

KEEP THE MAG STREET CAR BASED!
Hi Paul, I’m not one that usually complains about stuff, but the new Issue with the Camaro on the cover got me a little annoyed. The mag is called Performance Street Car for a reason. The Camaro is blatantly not a street car and while it may deserve a place in the mag, I think the prized position of front cover should belong to a genuine Performance Street Car. Apart from that, loved the mag – and the Camaro too! Bryce J via Email
TOUGH AS HELL COVER
Hi Paul, Finally, someone has featured the LAUNCH Camaro! I’ve long been a fan of Steve’s Camaro and it was great to see it on the cover of Performance Street Car. Great work. Can’t wait to see some more full-tilt Pro-Street cars in the near future. Adrian L via Email
SETTING THE STANDARD
G’day Paul, Once again, you’ve come through with the goods with a great cover. Tough car. Tough angle. Keep this stuff coming! Peter D via Messenger
LS THE WORLD – IT’S A GOOD THING, RIGHT?
G’day Paul, Good on you for featuring Anthony Galea’s turbo LS-powered Falcon. I know the amount of LS-conversions isn’t for everyone, but it’s a popular swap for the right reasons. There’s an abundance of engines and parts available, the prices are right for everyone to afford and the narrow engine is perfect for even small engine bays! Why wouldn’t you consider the LS? Love them or hate them, the proof is out there… Tony T via Email Tony, I agree with you 100%. I’m a big fan of the “Dare to be Different” type of build and that certainly includes Anthony’s XD, so running a feature on it was a no brainer. Look for more of that type of car in coming months…
CHANGES DEFINITELY FOR THE BETTER
POWERCRUISE COVERAGE BEST YET
G’day Simon, Yep, there’s no complaining that there’s nothing to go to anymore. Cruising is a big part of what we do, and when we have some many options available, that’s got to be a great thing!
Thanks Michael. I try to show as much of an event as I can, but there’s never really enough space to show it all. I appreciate the feedback and its great to know that people are happy with what I put together. Thanks for the support…
G’day Paul, I read your last Editorial and couldn’t agree more. The scene has definitely changed, and I think for the better. There’s so many opportunities now to get our cars out and about, that it’s hard to try to get to everything. Owning a cool car is fine, but getting it out and about as often as we can is awesome. I love the fact that just about every Saturday night and every Sunday morning, there’s any number of meets to get to. The only problem we now face it bad weather… Simon K Via Messenger
Hi Paul, One thing I really like about the new PSC is the event coverage and the amount of cars you showcase. Case in point the coverage of Powercruise #85 from Sydney. It so great to see coverage that doesn’t just concentrate on the big guns of the scene. After all, its the little guys that make up the bulk of the entrant lists at these types of event and giving them some coverage will keep them coming back for more! Keep the great work up. Michael H Via Email
I thought running the Camaro on the cover would get a reaction, but surprisingly, its mostly good reactions. Have a read of my Editorial this issue, it explains it in more detail. Look at the end of the day, we are all into modified cars. Whether they legitimately wear rego plates or not won’t make that much of a difference to me… 18

PAUL TINNING - TWIN-TURBO V10 VIPER XP COUPE WORDS - PAUL BECK PICS - OWNER
RESHAPED BONNET OPENING ONE-PIECE SLIDE-OFF FRONT
With a body featuring more mods than half of Hollywood’s A-List, and a twin-turbo Viper V10 engine for power, Paul Tinning’s XP Falcon Coupe is going to have plenty of sting when completed…
As owner of The Resto Shop in the Northern Territory, Paul is in the right business to piece together a one-off, custom Falcon coupe. It was back in 2018 when Paul decided to build the XP, originally planning on dropping the 427-cube Windsor from his XW Falcon into the XP’s engine bay. That all changed though when all the stars aligned, and with some spare cash from the sale of the XW, a Viper V10 engine and box came onto the market. Not even thinking twice, the Ford engine was dumped and the Dodge V10 was slotted to power the coupe.

Soon after purchasing the V10 Viper motor and box, Paul decided to add a couple of turbos’ – as you do! With the engine bay plans now changed, Paul, along with his in-house fabricator, Troy Dunning, (and mate Nick Walker) set about reworking not just the engine bay, but all of Ford’s panel work in an effort to make this XP a true, one-of-a-kind build. Troy fabbed up a new recessed firewall to accommodate the extra length of the Viper engine. Troy also handled the new chassis graft, adding a four-link set-up from McDonald Bros in the process. The original front end has been swapped out for a Rod Tech version featuring stainless control arms and coil-over shocks. The wheels of choice are Billet Specialties Winlite. The body changes are numerous and include reworked
T RENDERING BY CRISS CROSS AR 22
bonnet and boot opening, the bonnet happening around a front end that see’s the guards and nose welded together along with the bumper bar (which has also been narrowed) to make it one giant panel that slides off leaving the new engine fully exposed. The same process was done to the rear bar and the metal between the quarter panels welded up leaving a smaller boot opening. The bootlid and bonnet are yet to be completed, and will be made in either fibreglass or carbon-fibre. Due to the nature of the weather in the top end, the boys put in a big effort in seven weeks to complete the body work and get it into primer.
Inside, there’s also been plenty happening. Lots of time has been spent on getting the floor pans perfect as these will be painted and exposed, with “pads” being added for the driver and passenger. The dash will feature a Haltech IC7 dash that gets the info from the Haltech Nexus R5 computer. Making sure the huge amount of wiring to power everything is done to perfection, Paul looked no further than his brother Chris who just happens to own A&C Auto Electrics. Chris will also fit up the air-conditioning unit. Other upgrades include a Billet Works column, Wilwood pedal box assembly and a split bench seat. All Car Upholstery will be handling the stitch work in the interior. 23
Soon after purchasing the V10 Viper motor and box, Paul decided to add a couple of turbos’ – as you do! But they weren’t symmetrical, so a set of NRE turbos were sourced and fitted with fabricated manifolds. Backed with a 6-speed Tremec box and Sequential shifter and finishing with a 9-inch diff with 4.11-gears and 35-spline axles, this XP is like a hamburger with the lot!
Not even thinking twice, the Ford engine was dumped and the Dodge V10 was slotted to power the coupe. Paul is big on supporting local Darwin businesses to build this project and will be handling the paint himself with his crew at The Resto Shop. Paul wants to thank not just those who have been helping in the construction of the XP, but also his wife, who has been more than patient and very supportive during the process. This is one Falcon that I can’t wait to see finished! 24
URBAN Legend
Having been built in the early 90’s, Jimmy Talevski’s Pro-Street XW Falcon dubbed HYPO made a huge impression in the scene, then it disappeared… JIMMY TALEVSKI - 1969 XW FALCON WORDS / PICS - PAUL BECK 26
27
Those that are approaching their 50’s and have been in the custom car scene since their early years will no doubt remember Jimmy’s custom XW. Scored from his Dad who bought the XW new and used it as a family ride for many years, obviously had a huge impression on a young Jimmy. When it was time for Dad to part ways with the XW, the keys moved just a few inches further along on the kitchen bench, right next to Jimmy’s wallet. Jimmy had a plan for the Falcon, and it was a long way from what Dad had handed over to him all those years ago. Initially built at the height of the Pro-Street movement, HYPO drew in massive crowds with its big rear rubber and even bigger mountain motor hanging out up front when it made its debut around 1993. I was fortunate enough to photograph this Falcon back in its heyday for Street Heat magazine and who would have thought that almost 30-years later, I get to do it all
again! After spending what would have seemed like an eternity in hibernation, Jimmy pulled the car from its hiding place in 2016 and then spent plenty of time and money making some changes (some necessary, some not so) to bring the car back to the street. When I spotted it at a cruise night in Sydney’s Wetherill Park on Saturday night, I thought I was seeing things. A beaming Jimmy greeting me confirmed my double take – HYPO was back! Not wanting to take too much away from the original build, Jimmy made just a few changes to bring the car up to speed to where the scene is at the moment. The most notable changes are the swap from red-centred Neale’s Wheels to the polished American Racing Hoopsters measuring 15x4 and a massive 15x16-inches for that undeniable Pro-Street look. Externally, the other obvious change was the removal of the Mr Gasket scoop that once topped the dual four-barrel carbs.
Inside the Falcon is a full three-seater. Wait… What?
28
29
Speaking of the engine, the blown 351-cube Clevo that powered the Falcon back when the XW made its debut on the scene is long gone. A dropped valve put paid to most of it, so Jimmy had Louie Saab at Auburn Engine Reconditioning piece together a tough new combo. A new 4-bolt block was soon full of the best gear he could find, with a pair of CHI 4V alloy heads forming a spot for the Newby intake and 6/71 Mooneyham blower to slot into. Feeding plenty of premium fuel into the engine is a pair of ‘old-school’ 750 Holley carbs. The custom headers flow into a dual
3-inch exhaust system that easily expels the gases when the pumped Clevo fires into life. On the dyno, the engine produced 720hp – more than enough to keep Jimmy smiling. The full-manual C4 auto that backs the Clevo was pulled out, given the once over and then slotted back into place to send the power back to the four-linked 9-inch diff. The Falcon’s underside features the obvious rear wheel tubs along with lowered springs (coil-overs on the rear) with disc brakes inside each wheel. The detail under the XW is just as good as the top – as you’d expect!
Jimmy had a plan for the Falcon, and it was a long way from what Dad had handed over to him all those years ago. 30
31
With everything closed, the Falcon’s body looks like it’s been restored except for the huge hole in the bonnet for the blower to hang through. And that’s true to a certain extent. One feature on this XW makes it like no other. Jimmy had the boot hinged in reverse using custom hinges and latches. Once open, the alloy fuel cell is exposed. The Hermitage Red colour was laid onto the smoothed body by Paul Galvin at P&R Smash Repairs. The GS-stripes in Silver compliment the body colour nicely.
THANKS TO: My cousin Steve “Tongz”, George Tarabay, Vince Virzi, Bobby Stoj and last but by no means least, my partner Carolina Duque. Thanks to you all!

33
On the dyno, the engine produced 720hp – more than enough to keep Jimmy smiling.
Inside the Falcon is a full three-seater. Wait… What? No, you read that right, there’s three seats available – the two factory front seats and the custom single seat in the rear in between the covered wheel tubs. The seats and door trims are still covered in the same black American wool added during the first build, and still present as new. The harness belts offer that cool racer car look too. The ’69 model dash still holds the original gauges, but they have now been made redundant thanks to the AutoMeter dials that have been added not just for their good looks, but also for their accuracy. A MOMO steering wheel is a much better fit for this interior over the factory item.
When the decision was made to bring HYPO back to the scene, and after the changes were made, Jimmy had his cousin Steve “Tongz” go over the Falcon with a fine-tooth comb, looking for any irregularities that may cause some issues when Jimmy idled out of the garage and down the street. Something he intends to do on a very regular basis… 34

The 6th running of the King of the Street drag meet at Heathcote Park Raceway was always going to be a big affair. When the gates opened at 10am, the long line of race fans started flowing into the carpark, which was overflowing with cars by the time racing was to commence.
The event kicked off on Saturday with a test and tune session as a last chance opportunity to get tunes and settings ready for the ensuing battle that was scheduled to start after lunch. When the gates opened at 10am, the long line of race fans started flowing into the carpark, which was overflowing with cars by the time racing was to commence. From those in the know, it has been a long time since the spectator packing area was that busy! You can’t help but be a little happy for Lance Warren and his team that have put so much work into getting the track sorted and ready to host events again.

With the test hits all done and dusted, it was down to racing and to say the action was intense would be a gross understatement. Big burnouts. Wheels-up launches. Door handle to door handle racing. It was all on show at the King of the Street event.

WHINE MAKER
For most, having a tough HQ powered by a 588ci big block Chev would be more than enough. Terry Clemmet however, is a true hardcore car guy and knew that adding a Procharger would take his humble HQ to the next level. TERRY CLEMMET - HQ HOLDEN WORDS / PICS / VIDEO - PAUL BECK RACE PICS - GRANT STEPHENS / CACKLING PIPES 50
51
Having previously spent time building up a number of tough Torana’s, the move to the bigger sedan came along when Terry found the partially completed HQ on the market. With the ability to run a big block in the engine bay legally, Terry didn’t hesitate to part with the cash required to call the HQ his. Being handy on the tools, Terry built up the 9.8-litre fatblock Chev himself, kicking the build off with a tough Merlin block, knowing full well, this big-cube combo was going to generate north of 1000hp effortlessly. After the prepped block landed back in his garage, he added the Clevite bearings before sitting in the Scat crank swinging Callies rods and JE blower-spec pistons wrapped in C33 steel top rings. The cam is from Comp Cams and works in with the Crower lifters to provide a nasty idle. A Miloden oil-pump and sump complete the tough as nails bottom end. The BMP alloy
52
heads were fitted with Manley valves and springs and more serious rocker arms before they were introduced to the Merlin block. When the time come for the induction system, Terry could have went a number of different ways, but decided to drop in an Edelbrock intake manifold that now houses Bosch 2200cc injectors and a 90mm throttle body that is fed plenty of air to mix with the E85 pump fuel via the F3 Procharger that absolutely dominates the HQ’s engine bay. So big is the blower, that Terry had to chop away at the reverse cowl bonnet to make way for the unit to break through the bonnet line. With the MSD ignition system firing the pumped big block into life and the Fueltech FT450 engine management controlling its running, the engine was put to the test on the ACM Mechanical hub dyno, where Adam Cope managed to tweak the tune to produce an impressive 1406rwhp!
Ultimately though, Terry would love to run just one 7-second pass – even if it ends with a .99!
53
With that much power coming from the HQ’s engine bay, you don’t second guess the quality of the gearbox you bolt up behind it. Not wanting any embarrassing moments when the green bulb flashes and he jumps on the go-pedal, Terry played it safe and added a BTE Top Sportsman Powerglide rated to 2400hp along with a BTE bolt-together converter. The power is then fed through a custom 3.5-inch driveshaft by Ricky’s, to the 9.5inch fabricated diff with 3.7-gears in the Ultra case and 40-spline Strange axles that handle the torture with ease. With the HQ destined just for straight line passes now, the underside hasn’t seen too many upgrades. The braking system is still HQ, with the disc and drum combination still doing the job adequately. The front shocks have been replaced with QA1 coil overs whilst Afco shocks and Strange coils handling the launch duties when in track mode. The wheels of choice are black-centred Welds wrapped in Mickey Thompson tyres.
THANKS TO: Adam Cope at ACM Mechanical in Bathurst for his tuning expertise and general help with the car. Nathaniel Ardern at FuelTech for help with their product through the FuelTech Support. 54
55
Whilst the Sting Red body remains pretty much standard, with the exception of the modified reverse cowl bonnet, the GTS guards and the obvious lack of badges and mouldings, the same can’t be said for the interior. Built with racing in mind, there’s only glimpse of what was intended to be a family-friendly space by the Holden engineers. Only the passenger seat remains from its daily duty days, with the drivers bucket making way for an vinyl-covered RCI one-piece seat complete with G-Force harness. Looking past the SAAS leather steering wheel reveals the factory dash facia that now houses AutoMeter gauges. The FuelTech screen sits on the transmission tunnel just in front of the custom centre console and stripped down Hurst shifter. Terry has fitted a Pioneer sound system, but hearing it over the whine of the Procharger is a tough ask. The bolt-in roll cage encompasses the interior space of the HQ and legal down to an 8.0-pass.
So big is the blower, that Terry had to chop away at the reverse cowl bonnet to make way for the unit to break through the bonnet line.
56
57
To date, the HQ has run a best of 9.0@155mph with a 1.6 60ft. That pass was made with a heap of power pulled from it with the FuelTech and on street radials with a full exhaust system, so obviously the HQ has an 8-second ET in it. Before returning to the track, Terry now has to fit a parachute and there’s a few more dyno sessions to be had with Adam Cope at ACM Mechanical in Bathurst where the boys are confident they’ll extract even more power from the 588-cuber. Getting that power to the blacktop has proven to be an issue too, so there’s some work to do to the suspension too. Ultimately though, Terry would love to run just one 7-second pass – even if it ends with a .99! After that, he’d be content with 8.0’s consistently. Stay tuned, there’s much more to come from this HQ!
...the engine was put to the test on the ACM Mechanical hub dyno, where Adam Cope managed to tweak the tune to produce an impressive 1406rwhp!

To be honest, I’m surprised no one had come up with the idea of staging this type of event at Australia’s most famous race tracks. Les Adam’s, the main man behind the Autofest series of events, obviously saw the potential and as soon as the gates opened to the very first Bathurst Autofest, his belief that this could potentially become a big deal, had paid off. Since that day, there’s been more smoke produced, and more horsepower gathered at the Mountain year after year. It was quite obvious that the 10th staging of the Bathurst Autofest was going
to be a big celebration of all things horsepower related. After many months of events being postponed and cancelled, it was evident early on that the Bathurst Autofest was going to happen and when word got out that the show was a definite starter for the beginning of March, entries flooded in, and not surprisingly, it was the burnout comp that filled up long before any other section. That’s not to say it was the only driving event on the program. Hell no, this is Mt Panorama and when you have an iconic pit straight at your disposal, you damn well use it!
And this year, the King of the Mountain Burnout winner was a first time visitor to the event – Jake Myers!
During the course of the event, there were more passes made down Pit Straight than there would be in two V8 Supercar events combined. With the timing systems in place, the entrants lined up along the pit garages before making their way onto the straight to make a side-by-side pass in the Auto One Super Sprints. Some took the event seriously, doing their best to get the power to the ground in an effort to get to the finish line first. Other’s used it as practice for the burnouts that were to take place on the other side of the pit garages. The laid back nature of the event and from those making sure everyone abided by the rules, meant that it was all about having fun in cars. No agro. No bullshit. Just good old fun. Remember those days? There were four opportunities during the event to take part in the Super Sprints and each time, the line-up was long, winding its way through Pit Lane in two, sometimes three lanes! When the Sprints were done, the Street Printz Heads-Up Go-Whoa took over the straight. 62
63
Whilst the hardcore action was happening out the front of the venue, the pit area was alive to the sounds of tough cars strutting their stuff in the sectioned off area set aside for the Wilful Damage Grab-a-Flag and Autotek Autokana driving competitions. As we’ve come to expect, there were two groups present. One part of the entry list just wanted to blow off a set of rear tyres, whilst the serious competitors meticulously navigated the courses in an effort to get the quickest time possible. It was easy to see who was there for what reason… But it wasn’t just highrevving action in this area. The show and shine was in full swing for most of the day, with some entrants deciding to have their car on display rather than to flog the hell out of it. Gleaming under the Bathurst sun, the show and shine featured some standout cars including a very impressive HR Holden Ute with a V6 engine transplant, finely reworked interior and silky smooth paint. It was one of two HR Ute’s that got plenty of attention in the show section – the other being Chad Ribbon’s slammed over big billet wheels version that relied on a full-tilt, triple carb Holden 6 for power. One thing you can always count on at Bathurst Autofest is a variety of cars entered. There tough Fords and Holden of all ages on display, with a sprinkling of cool American muscle cars and an abundance of odd-ball builds that all seemed to be powered by LS-engines – most of which were built to destroy their tyres! The pit garages were always worth looking in too, as many cars that were there for the driving events, were kept in the garages until it was time to flex some muscle.
64
It was quite obvious that the 10th staging of the Bathurst Autofest was going to be a big celebration of all things horsepower related.
65
SOMETIMES
As with all Autofest events, the burnout competition was the star attraction event for 2021, bringing together a mix of pro-burnout competitors as well as those who just love the smell of burning rubber and love to put on a show in whatever they could get together in time for the event. For every rev-limiter bashing V6 Commodore out there having a go, there was one big hitter waiting in the wings to show just how to do it in style and that kept the crowds focussed on the massive burnout pad for longer! And this year, the King of the Mountain Burnout winner was a first time visitor to the event – Jake Myers, who along with Dad Gary, prepped the famous Mustang for their inaugural Bathurst Autofest win with a performance that left the judges and spectators in awe..
THINGS JUST GO
WRONG!
No agro. No bullshit. Just good old fun. Remember those days?
66
67
Sunday lunchtime saw a new inclusion to the event, that wasn’t really announced until the event took place. Although each year many had asked, their requests for an organised super-cruise around the mountain had always been denied – until just after midday during the 10th event! Although I had missed it due to a photo shoot back in Sydney later that day, I can imagine just how cool the long line of entrants cars would have looked as it weaved its way around the famous skyline track!
...this is Mt Panorama and when you have an iconic pit straight at your disposal, you damn well use it! LONG TERM PLAN
Just one day after the smoke had cleared from the Mount ain, Les and his team posted a press relea se announcing that they had done a deal with the Bathurst Council th at will see Autofest held ther e for the next 5 years with a further 5 year option! Great news for all invo lved!
68
69
During the course of the event, there were more passes made down Pit Straight than there would be in two V8 Supercar events combined.
Once again, the Bathurst Autofest showed why it’s become one of those events that you just have to be at. There’s plenty of opportunity to (literally) drive the wheels off your car, you get to cruise the Mountain and drag race your mates on the iconic Pit Straight! If this sounds like fun to you, book your holidays now for March 11th-13th, 2022 for the 11th Bathurst Autofest. We’ll definitely see you there!

GEORGE PERDIOS_1973 CHARGER WORDS – PAUL BECK PICS – XPOSED PHOTOGRAPHYY
Fully Charged
After dropping a 6.0-litre LS2 into a HQ Ute, George Perdios showed his Mopar side and added some technology to his ’73 Charger! 72
73
Whilst the HQ Ute was so much better with the updates made, it just didn’t offer the right amount of seat space for George and his family, so it was sold off and soon after, this Charger popped up on eBay for sale. Looking very much like his very first car, George had an instant connection with the coupe, and placed a bid – which was enough to secure the sale! Armed with a trailer, George made the long haul up the Hume highway from Melbourne to the NSW Central Coast to pick up his new drive. Although the panels were out of alignment and there was a couple of rust spots showing through the burgundy acrylic paint, the Charger was in good shape. George’s original intention was
to put rego on it and drive it, which really means it was destined for a full resto. After adding an Elko rack and pinion steering assembly, Wilwood front brakes, rebuilding the 265, adding triple webers, replacing the Toyota 5-speed with a T56 HSV box (which necessitated a larger trans tunnel), bolting up an All Race Fabrications 9-inch diff to the relocated leaf springs in the SSD Performance mini-tubbed rear end, George was happy to cruise the Charger. Or so he thought. Still not 100% happy with the car, it lasted two weeks before he stripped it down and started on another rebuild – this time, with bigger plans than he had originally thought.
George took the plunge and purchased a new, crate 6.4-litre SRT Hemi engine. Yep, 392 cubic inches of late model Hemi goodness!
THANKS TO: Andrew and Michael from MA Bodyworks. Brad and the boys at Valiant Spares & Repairs. Paul @ Elko. Joel the Auto Electrician. Adrian at SSD Performance. All Race Fabrications and Sam at Tekcoat Australia for the powder coating. 74
75
With a firm plan of what he wanted the finished car to look like, George stripped everything out of the Charger and sent the body shell off to Andrew at MA Bodyworks for the team to massage all of the defects from the aging metal, and in the process, remove the burgundy paint that had been added in the nineties! Taking the coupe back to the original colour as laid on by the factory was an easy decision for George. With the body smoother than a door to door salesman, Andrew loaded up his spray gun and laid on a couple of flawless coats of Limelight to the primed body and smoothed out engine bay. The result? Well, you tell me… It’s obvious George isn’t an introvert! As mentioned, the Charger’s underside had
been mini-tubbed before this rebuild started. Along with the rack and pinion steering upgrade, the front end also scored Koni shocks, lowered springs and Wilwood discs and calipers. At the opposite end, Koni shocks work with the relocated leaf springs to provide a better ride with braking taken care of via the same set up as the fronts. A re-sleeved master cylinder and eight-inch booster provide the stopping power. Wheels can make or break a car, but George got it spot on with the 15x6 and 15x10-inch Weldstar Street RT series in perfect prostreet styling – helped with the inclusion of the 28x13.5inch Mickey Thompson Sportsman Pro tyres tucked up into the mini-tubs.
Inside, the all-black factory style trim has been enhanced with the addition of more shapely Honda Integra front seats, a 5-inch AutoMeter tacho located just behind the Valiant sports steering wheel and a B&M shifter that has taken up residency where the factory manual stick shift once lived. A pair of smaller gauges have been added to the underside of the dash to compliment the factory dials. Whilst the seats don’t look too much out of place, George is having them retrimmed to suit the rest of the Charger’s interior. 76
77
When it came time to add the driveline to the Charger, the smooth engine bay was to house more cubic inches than ever before after George parted company with the rebuilt 265. Wanting that familiar V8 rumble that he had with the Ute, George took the plunge and purchased a new, crate 6.4-litre SRT Hemi engine. Yep, 392 cubic inches of late model Hemi goodness. Making 485hp in standard trim, George saw no need to pull the engine apart to make any performance upgrades. He did however, add a pair of custom headers made by Brad McKenzie at Valiant Spares that flow into a Michael Ryder fabricated full stainless, twin three-inch exhaust system incorporating two Growler mufflers for that meaty V8 sound. With the option to bolt-up any number of different boxes to the
78
Hemi, George opted for the all-Mopar combo adding an old-school, COAN Racing spec 727 Torqueflite that has been fitted with a full manual valve body, transbrake, billet alloy direct drum, six clutch direct, super support kit, 5-pinion planetary, super sprag, billet band apply strut, all housed behind the fabricated deep pan. George has ticked every box on the options list when he placed the order for the box. The converter came from Dominator and has a stall speed of 3500rpm. The final member of the driveline trio is the narrowed nine-inch, with its Eaton true-trac centre with 4.33-gears, 31-spline axles and Race Products floaters. A GJ Drivelines tailshaft with Strange yokes and 1350 uni’s ensures the horsepower gets to the big Mickey’s without any hassles.
Still not 100% happy with the car, it lasted two weeks before he stripped it down and started on another rebuild...
79
When the painted shell arrived back in George’s possession, he shipped it off to Brad at Valiant Spares and Repairs where the rest of the build happened over a six-month period. Since its completion, the reworked Charger offers George everything he wanted from the build. There’s room for five people, it now has plenty of power from the latemodel Hemi and it’s ultra-reliable. Not to mention it’s a massive head turner too! So, is it all done and dusted now? Are they ever? George still has some changes he’d like to make including blacking out the bonnet and ducktail and swapping the factory dash out for an RT-spec version along with a decent sound system. For now though, George and his family get to cruise in one of the coolest, tough street Charger’s in Melbourne!

l r i G POWER
With her husband driving a twin-turbo LS-powered HK Monaro, there was no way Toni Ritchie was going to be happy cruising anything even remotely stock. TONI RITCHIE - LJ TORANA WORDS / PICS - PAUL BECK 82
83
“I was wanting a project of my own, a car that would be known as mine, and that’s when I found this Torana for sale on Facebook. As it turned out, it was owned by someone my husband Rodney and I knew. When I excitedly rang Rodney to tell him about it and to get him to find out more, it seems we were on the same page, as Rodney had already spoken to Luke and we were going to check it out that afternoon. As soon as I saw it in front of me, I fell in love and knew it was going to be mine!” explained Toni. The purple paint was the icing on the cake for
Toni. In a sea of red, yellow, white and black Torana’s, the pearl purple certainly stands out. With the Summernats fast approaching, and with Rod being an engine guy, the decision was made to drop a blower and hat onto the Torana for that extra impact. To cap off the build for the event, a set of 18-inch billet wheels were bolted up under the guards for Toni to cruise on. “The car stayed this way for 12 months or so, but I was getting jealous of my friends driving their cars on the street, so we pulled it off the road and gave it a complete makeover.
Is Toni happy? Oh hell yeah! She has created a tough street, 500hp Torana that can be driven anywhere at any time. 84
85
In Toni’s eyes, the colour was spot on, so there weren’t any colour changes planned. With the LJ stripped down to its bare bones, Toni and Rodney shipped the body off to 2SUS Custom Resprays where Bassa got the body relieved of any defects and added a reverse cowl bonnet before laying down a couple of new coats of PPG Custom Purple. The new colour flowed into the engine bay too, that was soon going to be home to the aspirated Holden V8 that Rodney was working on. In stark contrast to the body colour, the custom interior is wall to wall white leather that covers the modified Recaro front seats and modified rear bench – reworked to fit around
86
the enlarged wheel tubs. The seats and door trims all feature a flame design stitched into the material as a highlight to break up all of the white. The factory dash is now just a distant memory, with a trio of AutoMeter gauges fitted into the housing behind the SAAS steering wheel, and another four smaller versions added under the purple painted and white leather wrapped dash panel. A full Pioneer sound system provides the cruising tunes. The interior trim was already in place when Toni became the new owner and is one area of the car that will change in the future, with a full factory style GTR interior being the ultimate goal.
...the blower and hat were removed and replaced with a single 850dp Holley carb mounted to a single plane Torque Power intake manifold that feeds the engine plenty of 98-octane fuel straight from the bowser.
87
Knowing that the Torana was going to see plenty of street use, the blower and hat were removed and replaced with a single 850dp Holley carb mounted to a single plane Torque Power intake manifold that feeds the engine plenty of 98-octane fuel straight from the bowser. The Holden block was prepped in the usual fashion before Rodney added a Scat stroker crank swinging H-beam rods wearing the same branding and SRP forged pistons. A Crane roller cam and Morel roller lifters soon joined the party as did a Solo Hercules modified Chrysler oil pump to ensure the slippery stuff gets to every part of the engine quickly. A High-energy sump caps off the tough bottom end. Rodney had Steve Gay ported a set of B-cast heads before fitting Manley severe-duty valves wrapped in Crane springs. When the factory HEI ignition system fires the now 355cube Holden into life, the custom 4-into-1 headers and dual 3-inch exhaust expels the gases with ease, all the while offering a legal, but noticeable tone. Rodney estimates
the engine is good for 500hp – enough to keep Toni smiling…. for now. Let’s face it, is there such a thing as too much horsepower? Backing the tough Holden stroker is a beefed up Powerglide that has a transbrake added along with a 5500 TCE converter. Gear selections are made via a TCI shifter. The third member of the driveline trio is, as you’d expect, a 9-inch diff with billet axles and a Truetrac centre with 4.11-gears. The 19x8 and 20x12 polished Intro V-Rod wheels dominate the exterior view and certainly make a statement tucked under the Torana’s guards. Obviously, the rear wheel tubs were opened up to fit the big rear rollers under. Suspension wise, the front end was upgraded with 3-inch lowered Pedders coils and shocks along with HQ Holden discs and calipers. Down the back, Strange coil-overs control the ride with chrome-moly adjustable control arms replacing the factory items. Ford drum brakes remain on the 9-inch diff. A remote booster now lives in the boot. 88
89
The Torana has been subjected to a three-year build in total, with a considerable investment made to get it to where it is now. Is Toni happy? Oh hell yeah! She has created a tough street, 500hp Torana that can be driven anywhere at any time. And it gets driven regularly to cruise nights, car shows, coffee runs – even date nights! And when Rodney gets the Monaro back together, there’s no doubt that when there’s an event on, the neighbours will hear two cars idling down the Ritchie driveway…

After postponing his event once in 2021, there was no way Elvis Barbieri was going to let a little rain spoil the party again…
Over the past ten years, the Showcars Melbourne event has proven itself to be one of those “must attend” events, not just for those in Victoria, but Australia wide. Over the years, Elvis has had many big name cars attend the event from all parts of the country, much to the appreciation of those spilling through the gates to see what’s on display. One of the big drawcards this year was of course, the XBOSS Falcon.

Whilst the 2021 show wasn’t the largest event in terms of car entrants, there’s no denying the quality on display was once again first rate, ensuring those that ventured out into the rain to visit the show, went home happy that they got to see some fantastic cars. Unfortunately there’s not much you can do about the weather, but with plenty of cars housed in the undercover areas, this year’s Showcars Melbourne was still a complete success. Bring on 2022!

COPPIN’ AN
AT TITUD E! Hot Rodding isn’t always about shiny wheels and candy paint. Craige Ward’s ’34 Coupe proves that sometimes less is more…
CRAIGE WARD - 1934 FORD COUPE WORDS / PICS - PAUL BECK 104
105
Nasty. Bitchin’. Bad Arse. Call it what you will, but there’s no denying that Craige’s Hi-boy ’34 is pure Hot Rod in every sense of the word. This coupe could very easily slot into the leading role of any remake of American Graffiti and quickly gain a cult following. From the wildly chopped roof to the traditional wheel and tyre combo and that all-black Hemi power-plant, this is one killer coupe. And that’s exactly how Craige knew it would be. When Craige dragged home the body and chassis from Rod Bod’s, he had a firm idea on what he wanted to completed project to look like. Two years after getting stuck into the build, his dream had become a reality. That aggressive, restyled roofline really makes Craige’s coupe a standout amongst the many traditionally chopped ’33 and ’34 Ford coupes currently on the scene. Now available from Bonneville Hot Rods, the slammed roof was relatively unique when Craige purchased his body. Not only does
106
the body have the wild chop, it has also been extended by four-inches, offering a little more leg room. The raw fibreglass body, with its hanging panels, was dropped off to Joe and Charchie at Napps Customs where it was prepared in readiness for colour. Craige didn’t want anything too flashy – candy colours were out, as were any two-tone combinations. For him, it was all about a traditional, tough Hot Rod colour. He found just wanted he wanted with a mix called Washington Blue. With no fenders or running boards to worry about, the colour only extends to the grille shell and chassis.
For a killer build like this, is there any other engine that would suit the ’34 as perfectly as this?

Speaking of the frame, with before the body could be mounted for the final time, Joe added the body colour to the already suspended chassis. Keeping the underside styling traditional, the front end features a fourbar I-Beam set-up with Commodore disc’s and calipers living inside the 5-inch, black steel wheels with small chrome hubcaps. Down the back, the wheel size increases by an inch and a half and hang off the nineinch rear end located with a McDonald Bros four-link assembly using coil-over shocks to provide a firm ride. The diff holds 31-spline axles and uses the standard drum brakes to provide adequate braking power.
Nasty. Bitchin’. Bad Arse. Call it what you will, but there’s no denying that Craige’s Hi-boy ’34 is pure Hot Rod in every sense of the word. 108
Whilst the interior could be considered plain but some, the quality is right up there with the best. Steve at All Trim is well versed in creating stunning interior spaces, and Craige’s ’34 is no exception. The relatively small confines of the interior is wall to wall black leather covering the restyled door trims, custom low back seats and headlining. The same theme continues into the boot area. Looking past the era-perfect steering wheel and chrome Flaming River steering column, the array of Dolphin gauges mounted into the dash facia. As there is no centre console to speak of, the B&M shifter is mounted high above the floor on a custom tube mount. It’s there where you’ll also find the all-important 5-inch AutoMeter tacho. 109
That just leaves the hero of this entire build – that black, blown, bad-ass Hemi engine that dominates the view from any angle. For a killer build like this, is there any other engine that would suit the ’34 as perfectly as this? Built by Aaron at APM, the 57-spec 392ci Hemi retains the stock crank but has Scott rods and pistons hanging off it. Likewise, the cylinder heads have been cleaned up and kept as per factory specs. What’s not factory is that Weiand 6/71 blower and

dual Carter AFB carbs. An MSD ignition system gets the beast firing while the custom Lake pipes not only look cool, but do a great job of expelling the gases whilst sounding so damn cool as well. On the dyno, the pumped Hemi made 630hp on 98-octane pump fuel. Power and reliability too… Making sure cruising the coupe is easy, there’s a Turbo 700, four-speed auto adapted to the Chrysler engine via a Hot Heads bellhousing.

After sending around two-years and plenty of the folding stuff to create a Hi-Boy Hot Rod like no other, Craige is more than happy with how the finished product has come together. In fact, there’s nothing he would change on it now it’s done. Craige now plans to cruise the coupe as much as possible before eventually handing over the keys to his son Jett.
Craige didn’t want anything too flashy – candy colours were out, as were any two-tone combinations. For him, it was all about a traditional, tough Hot Rod colour.
THANKS TO: Joe & Charchie at Joe Napps Customs for going above and beyond what they needed too. Nothing was too hard, and a family that understood my passion. Steve at All Trim for the awesome interior. Aaron at APM for the engine.
