From the Desk HANG ON TO YOUR HATS PEOPLE, THE AUSTRALIAN VERSION OF THE HOT ROD POWER TOUR IS COMING IN 2022!

Now more than ever, custom car owners are jumping behind the wheel of their cars and putting plenty of miles on the speedo on a regular basis, whether that is from attending any number of Cars and Coffee meets, Saturday night cruises or just a family drive on a sunny Sunday. And that’s a good thing. Who wants to look at their killer ride sitting idle in the garage? So I’ve decided that come September 2022, I’m going for an extended cruise from Wollongong to Geelong, taking in various regional centres over six days. And here’s the best part, you’re all invited to come along for the ride, making this a rolling car show unlike anything Australia has ever seen before! Now a six-day cruise in a highperformance car may not be for everyone, and I completely understand, so you can register to do any of the sections or all of them and become a long hauler! I’m still finalising the details, but the basic run down will be stops each lunchtime and overnight where the entourage will create a show and shine for everyone to enjoy. There will be sights to see, plenty of fuel stations and auto parts stores along the way, just in case you need to replace any parts. But don’t think we’re going for a cruise just for the hell of it. Men’s Mental Health issues are something that’s close to my heart and for the Performance Street Car Road Trip, we’ll be supporting these charities and raising awareness of their cause. Taking part in the Road Trip will set you back a donation towards the charity of choice, and a I reckon a minimum of $50 per car is fair. Of course, if you want to part with more, feel free and the person who manages to donate the highest amount will be awarded with a plaque on the final day of the Road Trip. I’ll have the dates secured next issue so you’ll have plenty of time to organise a week’s holiday with work, convince the other half of how much fun will be had and to book your accommodation. I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am, hope you are too. With that said, I hope you enjoy Issue #36 of Performance Street Car – Australia’s Toughest Car Magazine! See you on the Street,

Paul

WORKSHOP WARS ON 7MATE

There’s no denying that 7MATE is the number one TV channel for anyone even remotely interested in cars and one of the big shows currently on air, features one of our long time advertisers – Superformance. Grant and his team, based in Queensland go head to head with other shops to create customs rides, showcasing their ideas and talents that Superformance are well known for. If you’ve never seen an episode of Rides Down Under Workshop Wars, click on the logo here!

PRO STREET INDUSTRIES MOVES

Matt Marsh continues to build on his already impressive reputation for first class chassis and fabrication work in his Pro-Street Industries workshop, recently moving into a new premises that offers more space for more cars to be worked on. On our recent visit, Andrew Simmon’s gassed big-block had just had a set of new pipes made and fitted after a massive wheelstand saw the pipes squashed flat when the front end eventually found the blacktop again. The new pipes are a work of art and have been made to rectify a couple of existing issues as well. Also on hand was one of Simon Kryger’s Torana project’s as well as a cool LJ that is in for a bunch of work. Situated in the Illawarra area, you can reach Matt on 0401 047767 during normal business hours!

Finalist No.4 - April 2021

VALE: MARK POTTER

The car scene in the greater Wollongong area lost another one of the goodguys on April 15th, with the passing of Mark Potter. Mark, who has a tough as nails XA GT Falcon, leaves behind his wife, Ange and two young boys Travis and Tristan, as well as a long list of mates - all of which are missing him terribly. In a fitting farewell, many tough cars were in attendance at Mark;s funeral all sending him off with a few more clouds coming from many melting tyres. I have no doubt Mark would have been looking over everyone with a big smile and two thumbs up. Mark will remain in many peoples memories as a kind hearted family man who loved his mates and doing burnouts. To honour Mark, Killer Rides Live will have a Memorial trophy for a car that his family thinks he would have loved. RIP Mark. Until we meet again!

WHAT’S HAPPENING

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT - 1963 PRO-STREET PONTIAC TEMPEST

Phil Riley’s Pontiac Tempest is not your typical Pro-Street build. Sure, it’s tubbed, blown, has massive meats out the back and half the engine hanging out of the bonnet. But, it’s not a Tri-5 Chev, ’69 Camaro or Dodge Charger. Phil certainly looked outside of the box when deciding to build his Pro-Street pavement pounder. The ’63 Tempest would probably never make a Top 100 ProStreet Rides list…until now. And that colour. When was the last time you heard someone say they were going to paint their car Metallic Brown? Ok, so officially its Matrix Golden Bronze Metallic, but either way, it’s an unusual choice that just works. And whilst it would be expected to find a big cube Chev under that blower and carbs, it’s actually a 421-cube Pontiac big block providing in excess of 800hp to those 33x22.5-inch MT’s squeezed inside the tubbed rear end. The full custom interior is covered in contrasting tan leather and surrounded in a mass of chrome-moly tube cage. As owner of Riley Customs, Phil’s Tempest is a brilliant rolling drawcard for his business, showcasing just what he can offer customers…

STREET LEGAL? WHO CARES??

Hi Paul, Great work on the mag. I look forward to every issue. I enjoy all kinds of cars, whether they are legally registered or not. To be honest, I don’t want to read a magazine that only features cars that are 100% built to the law – that could be boring to say the least. Sure, a cool streeter certainly deserves its place in any magazine, but it needs to have a point of difference over what we would see daily in any carpark. For me, the wilder the better and I loved the fact that you had Steve Grima’s Camaro on the cover. Pro-Street for ever! Brad T Via Email

COMING ATTRACTIONS – BEST SECTION!

Hi Paul, Without doubt, the best part of Performance Street Car magazine for me is the Coming Attractions. It’s the first pages I go to each month, and Issue #35’s build was a cracker! Who would have thought to drop a Viper V10 into a relatively small XP Falcon, and then drop two turbo’s into the mix? The custom body is awesome and I can’t wait to see this one finished. Hope the owner decides to do the show circuit with it when it’s done. On top of that, I love the way to show the cars too. You can tell there’s others out there trying to mimic your style, but are not doing a very good job at it. Keep this cool stuff coming. Stuart S Via Email G’day Stuart, Thanks for the feedback mate. It’s always great to see what’s coming up in the scene and yes, Paul’s XP is definitely a standout car – even partly completed. The boys have done so much work to date and its only getting better! Like you, I am hanging to see this one in the flesh once it’s done! Cheers, Paul.

FAT FALCON

Hi Paul, Having only come into the car scene relatively recently, I was amazed to see Jimmy’s XW Falcon on the cover of Issue #35. That’s one tough Ford! I love the reverse bootlid – something I haven’t seen done before and of course, the blown engine and big rubber make quite a statement. How many other cool cars for years ago are there like this one locked away from people like me? Keep up the great work on the mag. Katie D Via Messenger Hi Katie, I have been in the scene for quite some time, and Jimmy’s Falcon is one of many from back in the day that have been garaged and hidden from sight. It’s a shame we don’t have a modified car museum in Australia, like the Peterson in the USA. It would be fantastic to see all of these older builds on display for everyone to enjoy. Maybe one day… Thanks, Paul.

G’day Brad, Thanks for your support mate. It’s a struggle each issue to try to get a good mix of cars to keep as many people happy as I can. Anyone that thinks they have it 100% right is dilussional. I know I am never going to keep everyone satisfied, but I can only try. Hope you enjoy this issue too! Cheers, Paul. 18

COMING ATTRACTIONS

Falcon

BRYCE MCCABE - PRO-STREET XR FALCON WORDS - PAUL BECK PICS - OWNER

TOUGH

With prices on XW/XY Falcon’s almost unattainable now, more people like Bryce McCabe are putting their efforts into building XR/XT Falcon’s with great results.

Some would say that the 67/68 Falcon’s were every bit as tough as their later model counterparts. And for me, that’s true. I’ve always liked the XR/XT styling, but while most people were restoring them or building GT replicas, tough street versions were a bit thin on the ground. Thankfully, that trend has changed and there’s plenty of wild versions pounding the streets for inspiration.Three years ago, at the age of just 17, Bryce found the perfect candidate

for a tough street build. The dead stock XR sedan had seen better days. But it was complete and for Bryce, a spray painter by trade, that was the main reason he took the project on. With the Falcon dragged home and pushed into the garage, Bryce got stuck into stripping the old girl to see what he was up against. With dreams of building a pro-street style car, Bryce planned the build around a tubbed rear end and tough, big horsepower engine.

TAN TRIM FULL CAGE

FORD PLATINUM BLUE PAINT OVER STANDARD BODY 20

FLAT FLOOR TUBBED REAR SHEET METAL 9-INCH DIFF WELD WHEELS 21

Whilst he is a painter by trade, he is also handy on the panel shaping tools and you can see his handiwork in the fabrication of the flat floor, wheel tubs, and smoothed out engine bay. The factory green paint (that had an inch of dirt covering it) was removed, leaving the factory steel in bare, shiny metal. With the problem area’s now fully exposed, Bryce spent plenty of time making the necessary repairs to the sheet metal in preparation for the new paint, which you can see is a Ford colour – Platinum Blue.

Three years ago, at the age of just 17, Bryce found the perfect candidate for a tough street build.

The engine of choice is a 393-cube Cleveland that visually is dominated by a pair of BRB Bob Book carbs on top of a Weiand tunnel ram intake. Making 675hp and a tyre-melting 560nM of torque, the engine also features AFD 4V heads and a Scat rotating system. The engine will be the “jewel in the box” when the bonnet is lifted with no wires in view to take anything away from the power plant. Backing the tough Clevo is a reverse-pattern, trans-braked C4 auto built by Al’s Race Glides that sends all that power to the narrowed Xtreme Fabworx sheet-metal 9-inch diff that is located via a custom four-link. The Falcon will be rolling on a pro-street inspired “big and little” Weld wheels. 22

23

The build has been in progress for three years now, and the end is definitely in sight for Bryce, with just the interior, front end, windows and exhaust to complete. If all goes to plan, Bryce is hoping to be amongst the crowd cruising around Canberra next January for the Summernats, where the Falcon will no doubt turn its fair share of heads…

Whilst he is a painter by trade, he is also handy on the panel shaping tools...

TOUGHLove

Anthony is a Holden man, but it’s the LJ Torana that he thinks is the best thing that ever rolled from Fishermans Bend. The Torana’s popularity no doubt started with Brocky’s antics around Mt Panorama, sticking it to those blue oval boys and embarrassing their 351’s with just six cylinders. In the modified car scene, there’s been a long run of tough LJ’s over the years to provide inspiration for anyone looking at building their own version. Whilst most would end up as regular use street cars, some guys like our man Anthony, decided to go down the race car route, adding more power, more rubber and more attitude than the Holden engineers could have ever dreamed of.

Anthony Terkalas has a long-held love of the LJ Torana and with a turbocharged 540-cube big block under the bonnet, he now owns one of the toughest! Enter PROWOG! 26

ANTHONY TERKALAS WORDS / PICS – PAUL BECK RACE PICS - GRANT STEPHENS / CACKLING PIPES

27

Twelve years ago, Anthony dragged this Torana home to Sydney from Melbourne after parting with just $1500. These days, that might buy you a grille and a couple of badges! Although very rusty, the Torana still represented enough good value that Anthony just couldn’t pass it up. As ordinary as it was, Anthony had a crystal clear picture in his mind of exactly how the LJ was going to be, and once home, it was stripped to its bare bones for what would turn out to be, a very long build period. Anthony was realistic though, he knew that to get the Torana to his eventual end goal, it was going to take time,

money and the right people to make it happen. Right from the outset, this was always going to be an epic build that Anthony was determined to pilot down the quarter mile in the 7-second zone initially, then dropping into the 6’s once the team got on top of the tune and Anthony got more familiar with the drive. Running those sorts of times means you need a killer driveline combo and of course, a car that’s built to handle the power as you do your best to keep it in the groove. Luckily for Anthony, he has friends in all the right places and you’d have to be crazy not to take advantage of those in the know…

And as it so happens, the late Joe Sabato was Anthony’s best mate and was the one responsible for piecing the big block together.

28

29

Before any driveline was fitted, work began on the body. The Torana’s rear floor section was chopped out and replaced with a new clip featuring a big set of tubs, four-link and much narrowed, Strange equipped 9-inch diff, suspended on Strange shocks wrapped in Hyper coils – the same suspension combo added to the front end. The braking system is all Wilwood including the disc’s, calipers and master cylinder. Also helping in the bottom end of the track is a pair of parachutes! Billet Specialties supplied the race-spec wheels measure 15x3.5-inches on the nose and a huge 16x16-inches on the modified rear. Although ravaged by time, the rusty panels were expertly taken care of by mate Mark who replaced the affected area’s with new metal before straightening out all the defects and stretching the rear guards in preparation for the much bigger rubber.

Twelve years ago, Anthony dragged this Torana home to Sydney from Melbourne after parting with just $1500. These days, that might buy you a grille and a couple of badges!

When he was satisfied the body was ready, Mark dumped a few coats of Dupont Grey onto the LJ’s body. The colour also covers the restyled body and adjustable wing that’s attached to the bootlid. Inside, it’s all business. There’s room just for Anthony, with the Kirkey seat surrounded by a mass of chrome-moly tube roll cage and alloy panelling that shows its purposeful and of course, light weight. When strapped securely into the driver’s seat, the air-equipped shifter, and Racepak dash are within easy view and reach. The fabricated dash features a little airbrushing for something different in a race car. 30

31

And that brings me to the substantial engine package. The Torana was always going to feature a big block. And as it so happens, the late Joe Sabato was Anthony’s best mate and was the one responsible for piecing the big block together. Joe earned a reputation for being so precise and meticulous when building any engine, and this 540-cube monster was no different. Starting with a prepped Dart block, Joe added a tough rotating system comprising of a Callies crank, BME rods and Diamond pistons wearing SpeedPro rings. Anthony is keeping the cam-specs a closely guarded secret. A Cantan sump and belt-driven Aeromotive fuel pump completes the bottom end. Joe then took a pair of AFR heads and added Ferrea valves and Pac springs and tougher rockers before bolting them into position. An Edelbrock intake soon joined the party and plays host to the Wilson 105mm throttle body and Plazmaman 550cc injectors. Joe decided on a single 118mm Precision turbocharger that mounts front and centre of the engine – poking through the grille for optimum air flow.

Sadly, the world lost Joe Sabato before the Torana made it to the track – something the guys never thought they would have to deal with. 32

Custom headers and exhaust system easily take care of the spent gases. Controlled by a Haltech ECU with spark coming from Haltech coil packs, and guzzling gallons of methanol, the force-fed big block makes in excess of 2000hp. Hello six-second passes! A tough engine relies on a tough transmission to get the power to the rear end and through to the monstrous slicks. In this case, there’s a 2-speed, Turbo 400 box bolted up to the big block that is like a burger with the lot. If it’s needed to deal with the horsepower, it’s been fitted inside this box. Inside the Reid bellhousing sits a Coan, bolt-together converter. The box will handle more power than the big block currently makes, but you can’t help but wonder if the boys over-engineered the box in case they get the urge to up the ante in the horsepower stakes later down the track… 33

After 12-long years of building this tough Torana, Anthony has finally had the opportunity to get it down the track with some set-up passes made and a full pass under power to gain his licence. Sadly, the world lost Joe Sabato before the Torana made it to the track – something the guys never thought they would have to deal with. As sad as the situation is, I have no doubt Joe was riding shotgun with Anthony with a grin from ear to ear…

Joe decided on a single 118mm Precision turbocharger that mounts front and centre of the engine – poking through the grille for optimum air flow.

THANKS TO: My best mate, the late great Joe Sabato for the huge effort he put in with not just the engine, but the entire car. Without him, this car would still be in the build. I wish he was here to see the first pass. Mick from Mick’s Motorsports for all the time he has given me from the dyno time to coming to the track. Alex at Plazamaman for always going above and beyond with product and his help. Brendan for all the fabrication work he did for the build. A big thanks to all my friends who have contributed in some way and last but not least, a massive thank you to my family for all their understanding and patience whilst the car was built. You simply can’t do this without family… 34

30th ALL FORD DAY_EASTERN PARK, GEELONG_APRIL 18th, 2021 WORDS – PAUL BECK PICS – CHAD SILVEY

A move to a new venue was the catalyst for one of the largest All Ford Day’s ever seen in Victoria.

The 1200 or so entrants that made their way to the 30th All Ford Day were all smiles when they rolled into the events new home, the spacious Eastern Park in Geelong. Offering plenty of display space and ample shade from the surrounding tree’s, this was the perfect place to host the event, with Geelong being the spiritual home of Ford in Australia.

Leo Khouri - 1971 XW GTHO Race Car Winner - William Clay Ford Jr Best Ford Award 38

39

More than 4000 Blue Oval fans spilled through the gates to take in the 30th Anniversary event and with a massive line up of cars on display in near perfect weather conditions, no one walked away unhappy with what they saw. No matter if your preference was for a faithfully restored GT Falcon or a custom classic, full tilt street machine or just a nice daily driver, there was plenty of each to keep even the fussiest spectator smiling.

40

“Ford is in our blood here in Geelong.” said Cr Kylie Grzybek, who officially commenced the All Ford Day. “It’s a great source of pride, multiple generations have worked in and around Ford for many years”.

41

Each year, there’s a feature car that’s a special build, and for 2021, that car attracted plenty of attention. The “one of one” 1991 EA Falcon GT was the focus of many, with it too celebrating 30-years since its unveiling. Having previously been on display at the Ford Discovery Centre, but stored away from the public since the Centre’s closure, for many, this was the first time they would have had the chance to see it up close and personal. It showed just how committed to the performance brand back in the day. Would it have been a collectable if put into production? I have no doubt…

By all reports, the event was a complete success, with a record number of cars, a new venue and a bright outlook.

“Ford is in our blood here in Geelong.” said Cr Kylie Grzybek, who officially commenced the All Ford Day, “It’s a great source of pride, multiple generations have worked in and around Ford for many years”. Sales Director of Ford Australia, Fadi Mawal, was also there to open the day. “[Ford] is one of the leading businesses in terms of high-end technology and R&D in Australia, and we’re really proud that it all started here in Geelong.” he said. Event Director Scott Pigdon said they couldn’t have asked for a better day, “it’s been perfect for Ford lovers, friends and families to come out, have a wander and take in some amazing vehicles,” he said. “Of course, we couldn’t have done it without our partners, volunteers, attendees and spectators, especially Ford Australia and the City of Greater Geelong.”

I took this photo of Ash Bailey’s fuel funny car at Willowbank Raceway in 2012. I have photographed drag racing for over fifty years and this remains one of my favourite images. Nitro is simply a drug – producing acrid fumes that cause your eyes to water and the sound is eight times louder than a football crowd, it rattles your entire body. Lastly there are these fifteen foot long flames. No matter where you are at a race track, when you hear the sound of a Nitro engine, people come running. – it is just amazing.

The Memory REMAINS

When Rick Selby passed away, his wife couldn’t keep the prized XB Falcon he had built up over many years. The logical choice was to sell the Falcon to someone who knew Rick, and who better than one of his oldest school mates, Alberto ‘Bert’ Freire?

ALBERT FREIRE - 1976 XB FALCON WORDS / PICS - PAUL BECK 50

51

Since taking possession of the Falcon, Bert has not just maintained what his mate Rick had built, but has also added some of his own tweaks, his own personal touches.

As a youngster, Bert’s Dad cruised the streets in an XB Falcon and it obviously left a lasting impression on him. When his Dad passed away, Bert knew he just had to have one of his own, in memory of his late father. What he wasn’t counting on was the news that his good friend Rick had passed on too. Fate has a funny way of making things happen, and when a friend of a friend heard the Falcon was on the market, Bert couldn’t help himself, and had to make it his. That call saw Bert become the custodian of the Falcon, fulfilling his ambition of owning a tough XB Falcon. Rick had spent plenty of time and money building up this old-school-cool XB, creating a tough Falcon that could be driven anywhere at any time. And for Bert, that was also the appeal of the car.

The custom mix Blue that still adorns the XB’s body, was part of Rick’s original plan. But before any colour could be added, many hours were put into each panel making sure that the sheet metal was in the best shape it could be for the new paint to cover. Ford’s original style has been kept with just a GT-spec grille with spotlights differing from the factory specsheet. The GT-408 decals mimic the style of the GT and give the game away as to what’s lurking under the bonnet. 52

53

Speaking of which, the engine started life as a 351-cube Cleveland, but thanks to a stroker rotating system, the cubic capacity has been upped to a more respectable 408ci. Bert doesn’t have a lot of the engine specs, as the build was complete when Rick was occupying the driver’s seat. What we can tell you is that the gap between the Chi 3V alloy heads is filled with a single Demon carb mounted to an intake from the same company. On a strict diet of Premium fuel, the engine makes plenty of power and isn’t too hard on the eye’s either. Backing the stretched small block is a full-manual C4 fronted with a 4000rpm

converter, with gear changes via the B&M ‘pistol-grip’ shifter. As you’d expect, the diff is a nine-inch with a 4.11-geared centre. The engine may not be as wild as some we feature in these pages, but it was never meant to be. For Rick, it was about having a true street car – a trend that Bert continues with to this day. The entire underside of the Falcon has been treated to upgrades including new lowered (but not too low) suspension, new discs and calipers to each corner, hidden behind the chrome 18-inch US Racer wheels. So now the XB not only goes hard, it corners well and stops just as good.

55

In stark contrast to the body colour, the interior is draped in white leather that covers the factory seats and door trims in the Ford-style pattern. The steering wheel is a wood-rimmed item that replaces the tired old Ford one with much more style. The XB dash still retains the standard gauges, with just a couple of smaller dials added to the shifter housing and a 5-inch Tacho attached to the left side of the steering column. Whilst just the standard radio is in full view in its original place, there is a Kenwood CD head unit mounted safely in the glove box that sends the tunes through Pioneer speakers.

...the engine started life as a 351-cube Cleveland, but thanks to a stroker rotating system, the cubic capacity has been upped to a more respectable 408ci.

56

57

Since taking possession of the Falcon, Bert has not just maintained what his mate Rick had built, but has also added some of his own tweaks, his own personal touches. Whilst those changes so far have been subtle, that may no longer be the case as Bert has a big change planned – something that Rick would have be more than happy to see on his Falcon. At some stage in the near future, that single carb fed Clevo may soon have a polished 6/71 and carbs proving the considerable power through the Falcon. What a tribute that would be to a mate who is no longer with us…

GENERALDuties Heathcote Park Raceway has proven to be the new home of Drag Racing in Victoria this year, and when the Tuff Mounts Holden Drag Nationals team arrived for their annual meet, both reputations went through the roof.

There’s no denying the Tuff Mounts Holden Drag Nationals has built up a huge following over the years and when it was time to stage the 2021 event, no one was surprised to see a full house at Heathcote Park Raceway. The event is held in such high regards, that it brings in racers from all over the country, which in turn brings in plenty of punters who line the track just to see their favourite drivers and cars make a pass down the track.

Those arriving to the track early, got to spend Friday as a test ‘n’ tune in preparation for the battle that was to take place the next day. Racers soon realised that Lance and his team were offering up a sticky track that was going to see some tightly contested racing. As is always the case, the quick-passes were supported by some big wheels-up launches, paint-melting fires and even a brush with the concrete barrier.

The event is held in such high regards, that it brings in racers from all over the country...

Yep, the 2021 Tuff Mounts Holden Drag Nationals was as spectacular as you could have asked for. We’ve all seen the multiple angles of Brad Young’s HR sitting on its rear bar as well as the huge flame out on Hernan Tosti’s HB Torana that dominated the internet the day of the event. Then there was Matt Lampard whose HZ Kingswood smacked the wall shortly after launching down the track, leaving some battle scars down the HZ’s side. You wanted action, you certainly got it…

With no less than six classes for racing, five of which were run over the full quarter in a DYO format, there were plenty of opportunities for racers to compete.

With no less than six classes for racing, five of which were run over the full quarter in a DYO format, there were plenty of opportunities for racers to compete. Not only were the category winners walking away with a cool trophy fabricated by Steel Edge Constructions and finished by Race Coatings as well as a share of the prize money, but in a great gesture by the IHRA board, the winners also scored a 12 month membership to the organisation. Pretty cool, huh?

2021 proved that the Holden Drag Nationals thoroughly deserves the praise heaped upon it from both racers and spectators and with constant upgrades happening at Heathcote Park Raceway, I have no doubt you’ll have to get in early to make the cut for the entry list for the 2022 Holden Drag Nationals. Bring it on…

QUICK TEMPER With 1400hp and mid 7’sec potential, Ben’s streetcar-spec VL HDT LE is more than deserving of wearing the TEMPER plates…

BENNY TEMPER - VL HDT LE CALAIS WORDS / PICS – PAUL BECK 72

73

Those who regularly attend drag racing at Sydney Dragway will no doubt remember Ben’s previous Turbo 6 VL Commodore – the original car to have the TEMPER plates attached. That can made many 7-seconds passes, but when the opportunity came for Ben to purchase the long desired HDT LE Calais, he just knew that it would soon take over where version one had left off. Right from the outset, Ben had demands on this particular car. It’s no good building a new car and going slower, so the deal was, this VL had to run mid 7’s – or quicker. And that’s not all, it had to do that as well as being driven to and from the track. A big ask? Not necessarily.

It still amazes me that a six-cylinder engine can produce anywhere near 1400hp, but the proof is in the numbers and as they say, numbers don’t lie! 74

75

No one would argue that the guys at Maatouks Racing know their way around the Nissan RB30 engine. In fact, many regard them as performance guru’s when it comes to extracting power from the inline six. Ben is firmly a fan of what they offer and had no problem sending his engine to them to get the humble six pack screaming. Externally, there’s no possible way you could look passed the big Precision 8891 turbocharger hanging off the side of the engine. On the opposing side of the body-coloured rocker cover sits a Hypertune intake manifold with 2400cc Haltech injectors providing enough fuel to drain the tank in no time. Internally, it’s no less impressive. The prepped RB-block now features a Nitto 3.2 stroker crank

swinging rods and forged pistons from the same manufacturer. Likewise, the oil pump from Nitto ensures the slippery stuff is sent from the high-capacity sump to the entire engine in record time. The race-spec cylinder head is another Maatouks special item, CNC-machined for optimum flow. The ignition system comprises of a Platinum Race Products trigger kit and R35 Skyline coils. Once fire up, the 6-Boost exhaust manifold and ensuing pipe work, easily ditches the gases into the atmosphere. It still amazes me that a six-cylinder engine can produce anywhere near 1400hp, but the proof is in the numbers and as they say, numbers don’t lie! Whilst the engine is wild, its surrounds are surgically clean with hardly a wire or unnecessary component to be seen.

THANKS TO: A big thanks to my Dad, Mick for always helping out no matter what needs doing. Ahmet for giving me the car! Anthony Maatouk for the engine combo. Dean at Pulver Brothers Smash Repairs. Sam at KTek Industries for all the fab work. Zein for wiring the car from front to back and helping with the entire build. Justin from PSI Fab. Rani, Chop, Ahmed, Dave and Skinny for their help along the way as well as anyone else I may have forgotten…

Backing the potent RB six-pack is an Al’s Race Glides built Turbo 400 auto with the right gear inside to handle any punishment that Ben can put through it. 76

77

Backing the potent RB six-pack is an Al’s Race Glides built Turbo 400 auto with the right gear inside to handle any punishment that Ben can put through it. Fronted with a big TCE converter and relying on a B&M shifter for gear changes, the hope is that the box will never have to be repaired, just maintained. Of course, the rear end features a 9-inch diff and with that much power up front, it is fitted with billet axles and floating hubs. The diff is suspended under a tubbed rear end with AFCO coil-over shocks, with the same shocks featuring on the Pro-9 front end. The HSV-spec steering and brakes are still in place, with a VT Commodore master-cylinder employed to give more efficient brake feel. Now most Commodore owners tend to go big diametre wheels, but Ben isn’t most Commodore owners and to him, width is more important – especially on the rear end. The wheels of choice are Weld V-series measuring 15x10 beadlock version on the rear and 17x4.5-inches on the pointy end. The rear squeezing 275/60 tyres into the reworked tubs. The black wheels certainly compliment the stunning custom red paint that adorns the essentially stock HDT-enhanced VL body. With the blackouts around the windows and across the taillights and with that huge intercooler highly visible through the front bar, the exterior of TEMPER version 2 is nothing short of spectacular and a huge credit to the team at Pulver Brothers Smash Repairs.

Those who regularly attend drag racing at Sydney Dragway will no doubt remember Ben’s previous Turbo 6 VL Commodore, the original car to have the TEMPER plates attached. 78

79

Inside, it’s part cruiser, part weekend racer. The series two Calais’ interior space is comfy and classy in acres of grey velour and when combined with the KTek Industries fabricated 6-point roll cage, B&M shifter, dash mounted iPad and cool Haltech dash, the VL becomes the perfect mix of street and strip. Sure, there’s an impressive Kenwood sound system on board, but you get the feeling Ben would rather hear that RB30 screaming…

It’s been around 18-months since the project started and now that it’s all but finished, Ben is happy. There’s nothing he would change if he had his time again, and is now preparing to get the new TEMPER to the track to run some numbers. And when (not if ) Ben achieves his goal of driving to the track, run a mid 7 and drive home, there won’t be a happier guy at Sydney Dragway. Bring it on… 80

POWER

ADAM REID - 1969 CAMARO WORDS - PAUL BECK PICS - LAUREN @ XPOSED PHOTOGRAPHY 82

With a shed full of tough US rides, this stunning ’69 Camaro may be the most subtle, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing… 83

Sharing space with a tubbed, big-block ‘69 Camaro that was featured in Killer Rides #31 and a wild, blown Pro-Street Nova, this Camaro isn’t tubbed, doesn’t have a blower, but is full street and out of the three Killer Rides Adam has the keys to, this Pro-Touring Resto-Mod Camaro gets the most use out on the black top. Adam found this Camaro as it went through the Barratt Jackson Auctions in Scottsdale Arizona – at which time it had just 30 miles on the speedo. With a deal done, the Camaro was securely packed into a container and was soon on its way to an anxious Adam waiting in Victoria. The Camaro was exactly what Adam wanted couldn’t wait for it to arrive so he could go through the registration process and hit the road in style.

If you can handle the upkeep needed for black, why would you choose any other colour?

84

85

The factory-styled body is, in most people’s opinions, as good as the get for a Camaro, so it’s no surprise to see the exterior has been left pretty well how the GM engineers had intended it to be. What you can’t see are the Detroit Speed Engineering mini-tubs and the Hotchkis sub-frame connectors added to the original chassis. Both of these changes were needed to help the Camaro fit the Pro-Touring Resto Mod theme, with the enlarged wheel tubs allowing the fitting of the 20x10 American Eagle Boss charcoalcentred wheels wrapped in 305/25 Pirelli rubber. Up the front, the matching 18x8inch rims are attached to the new front end that helps the handling of the Camaro immensely. Many may disagree, but I reckon the Tuxedo Black paint accented with the familiar white stripes suits the curvy lines of the Camaro perfectly. If you can handle the upkeep needed for black, why would you choose any other colour? The body and paint are as they were when the Camaro made the long haul from the US, but shines so much more brightly now thanks to Anthony Huynh from Bon Vivant, who expertly polished the paint the way it should have been done.

Adam found this Camaro as it went through the Barratt Jackson Auctions in Scottsdale Arizona – at which time it had just 30 miles on the speedo.

To compliment the body colours, there’s been plenty of billet added in the form of the taillights, bonnet hinges and latch, fender braces and door vents. Inside, the all-black theme continues with plenty of black vinyl covering the factory issued seats and door trims, with the original centre console housing a new ‘horseshoe’ shifter to suit the extra gear in the transmission. That’s where the standard spec stuff ends. Sitting behind the factory-styled, but aftermarket steering sits a dash that has had the analogue dials ripped from it to make way for the Dakota Digital gauges. There’s no doubt the interior is practical, but it looks so damn right – just how you’d expect a muscle car interior to be. 86

87

So, what would you expect to find when you lifted the lid on the engine bay? Big block? Multiple carbs? No. How about GM built 5.7-litre LS1 that is topped by what is no doubt, this Camaro’s talking point – that oh-so-cool OBX CrossRam electronic fuel injection. Not only does it increase the power from the LS, but the amount of bling it brings to the engine bay is almost unmeasurable. The coil packs have been moved to the inner guards to give the engine its self a cleaner look, with a billet pulley system allowing the use of a serpentine drive belt. A pair of custom headers flow through a fully-fabricated exhaust system. Backing the trick LS1 is a 4L60E

built by Hasty’s Transmissions using a TCE converter with a 3000rpm stall to get the Camaro moving quickly. Down the back, you won’t any Ford parts in and around the diff area. This Camaro is all GM and has a 3.73-geared, Positraction 10-bolt diff in place to get the power to those big 20-inch tyres. The suspension and braking have also been suitably upgraded with 3-inch lowered Detroit Speed Engineering leaf springs in the rear and a 2-inch drop in the front coil springs, that work in with the shocks built by the same company. A quartet of CPP disc and calipers live inside each wheel and easily handle pulling up the Camaro from any speed.

How about GM built 5.7-litre LS1 that is topped by what is no doubt, this Camaro’s talking point – that oh-socool OBX Cross-Ram electronic fuel injection. 88

89

As mentioned, this Camaro is everything Adam wanted in a Pro-Touring Resto Mod inspired ’69. The right colour, right wheels, right stance and of course, the right engine combo. There’s nothing he could ask for to be done differently. But after owning the coupe for some time, and after making some subtle changes to make the cars his own, resulting in the coupe winning a few trophies, Adam reluctantly has put the Camaro on the market, due to health reasons. Adam’s loss could very well be your gain, so if you’re cashed up and looking for a high-quality piece of US Muscle that perfectly combines modern technology with classic oldschool looks, contact me here at the magazine and I’ll pass your details on to Adam. Be warned, it’s not going to be a cheap car to buy, but nothing worthwhile ever is…

The Camaro was exactly what Adam wanted couldn’t wait for it to arrive so he could go through the registration process and hit the road in style. 90

THE UPGRADES KEEP COMING AT HEATHCOTE PARK RACEWAY!

True to his word, track owner Lance Warren has been continuing the upgrade works at Heathcote Park Raceway, with the concentration being placed on the startline area, with new concrete barriers being fitted to the centre of the track around the Christmas tree was well as resurfacing on the tracks edges and around the undercover canteen area. These are just part of the journey that Lance and his team are taking to take Heathcote Park Raceway to the next level.

SUNRAYSIA DRAG RACING ASSOCIATION GETS $500K GRANT

As part of the Victorian Governments Community Motorsport Program, the Mildurabased Drag Strip worked with ANDRA and the Mildura Rural City Council to apply for the grant, with the funds being delivered via the first dedicated motorsport investment program. Its great news all round with Club President Kingsley Kuchel explaining that the dollars will be put aside for upgrades at the facility including a short barrier extension in the run-off area, a new return road entrance, and the repairing of the well-worn bitumen area’s on the return road, pits and staging lanes. The sealed area’s in the pit area will be extended offering more usable space for entrants, in the same area that will see a new toilet and shower block built. “These upgrades will help us move forward in the future to be able to handle bigger entrant numbers and at certain events – such as for Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series rounds and our Easter Supercharged Shootout Event – give better flexibility with handling the larger transporters which attend. Kingsley went on to say, “The projects we will be completing with this funding are definitely going to be such a huge help to our Club in bringing us to the next level and the Club is excited to see the developments come to life over the next 12-18 months.” For more information on the Sunraysia Drag Racing Association, click on the image. 102

Rollin’ For

Rowdy

When his brother passed away, Jeff Hind took on the build of the Hot Rod his brother always wanted to build. This is his tribute…

JEFF HIND - 1937 FORD SLAMBACK WORDS / PICS - PAUL BECK 104

105

Affectionately known as Rowdy, Jeff’s brother Rod bought this sleek ’37 body, chassis and engine in from the USA some ten years ago. Being way too busy with work to get started on the project, it sat idle for three year. But before Rowdy could lay a spanner on it, he suddenly passed away. Devastated, but knowing how much Rowdy was looking forward to building the ’37, Jeff purchased the project from Rowdy’s wife and got stuck into the build as a tribute to his brother. As the owner of a panel shop, Jeff had the right skills, tools and staff to get the Rod to the stage he knew Rowdy would have been more than happy with. Getting the body and chassis sorted was the main priority, with Jeff dedicating his own time in preparing the fibreglass body for paint. But before any colour could be added, Jeff added electric openers to the bonnet and bootlid, recessed the rear floor to accommodate the planned rear seats and completely steeled out the interior space. As with any fibreglass body, there was plenty of work to get it to a point where the team were able to lay down some colour. Every component required that couldn’t be purchased, had to be fabricated and even those they could buy, still had to be modified to fit.

And in a bold move, there’s no chrome on the car at all. Any metal that would normally be chromed or polished, had been painted metallic black

106

107

The body now sports cool flush mount taillights, fuel filler and number plate. The rear of the body also scored cut-outs for the dual exhaust. This restyled ’37 Ford body comes with big fenders, late-model style headlights and an impressive grilled that continues along the bonnet sides. The front and rear windows are flush-mount and the late-model side mirrors suit the style to perfection. With the panel working tools back on the shelf, Jeff filled his spray gun with a custom mix silver and laid down its contents onto the smooth body. The colour is as smooth under the body as it is on top. And in a bold move, there’s no chrome on the car at all. Any metal that would normally be chromed or polished, had been painted metallic black, giving the high-tech ’37 that late model feel that both Rowdy and Jeff were aiming towards.

Like the body, the chassis has seen plenty of attention lavished on it. The rails have had plenty of tube cross members added to stiffen up the ride, while a Ride-Tech front end has been added along with tube control arms, coil-over shocks and a power rack and pinion steering assembly. Down the back, there’s a 9-inch diff located with a custom four link and relying on Ride-Tech coil-overs for a smooth ride. The brake booster has been added to the chassis and controls the quartet of Wilwood discs and calipers that live inside the 17x7 and 20x12 Billet Specialties rims that have been painted in a custom metallic black. Low profile and sticky Dunlop SP Sport tyres offer great grip on the road. With the fit up done, Jeff once again added the custom Silver to the chassis which was now ready for the driveline to be bolted up. 108

Rowdy wanted his ’37 to be user friendly and the 6.0-litre LS2 engine is perfect for this application. Not only does it make plenty of usable power, their reliability and fuel efficiency make them ideal and offers a drive compared to a late model Commodore. Essentially stock, Jeff did add “Rowdy 1967-2013” to the detailed engine cover. For added comfort when out cruising, the engine was fitted with a custom air-con set-up. The custom headers unwind into a dual system and to ensure the heat doesn’t affect the floor (or the passengers above it), there’s heat shield incorporated into the underside. The LS-engine is mated to the 4L60E four-speed auto with a 3000rpm converter, while the 9-inch diff is kitted out with 4.11-gears offering great acceleration.

With just the interior space to complete, Jeff went to see O’Shea Trimming with a firm design plan in hand. Using a pair of Nissan 280Z front seats as the basis for the retrim, these have been mounted as low as possible to offer more head room. Normally, in this body style, there wouldn’t be a rear seat added, but with Jeff having two sons that like to go cruising too, Jeff designed a pair of custom buckets for the rear, complete with flash mounted seat belt stalks, retractable belts and a JBL speak system mounted to the parcel shelf. A neat touch are the interior lights added to the bottom of each rear seat. The flat dash now houses a cool billet facia holding the Dakota Digital gauge cluster, with the air-con dials located just below. The tilt column is a Flaming River item that is topped with a billet steering wheel, trimmed in the same leather and painted metallic black. The interior was covered by Chris in a great mix of leather and suede. Like the engine cover, ROWDY has been added to the seats and steering wheel.

But before Rowdy could lay a spanner on it, he suddenly passed away. Devastated, but knowing how much Rowdy was looking forward to building the ’37, Jeff purchased the project from Rowdy’s wife and got stuck into the build as a tribute to his brother.

Rowdy wanted his ’37 to be user friendly and the 6.0-litre LS2 engine is perfect for this application.

After a solid 18-months of constant work, Jeff and the family had the ’37 on show for the first time at the 2020 Victorian Hot Rod Show, which is where I first spotted the car. Like everyone else, I was blown away. Sure, there were cars on show that were painted brighter colours, sported much bigger engine packages and were all out show stoppers. But there was something about this ’37 that just grabbed everyone’s attention. Maybe it was the sleek style? Maybe it was the lack of chrome? Whatever it was, Jeff and everyone else that put any time into the build, achieved their goal of building a show-quality hot rod that could be driven anywhere at any time. As Jeff explained, “There’s absolutely nothing I would change. I couldn’t be happier with what we’ve achieved!” And you know what, I reckon Rowdy is looking down with the biggest grin on his face agreeing with Jeff one hundred percent!

HIGH PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Not only does having your headers and exhaust system look great, there’s also a practical side to having it done too. Having your headers coated by HPC drastically reduces under bonnet temperatures, improves engine performance and longevity as well as reducing fuel use in the process. The unique HPC’s HP1 process is designed to protect steel against corrosion and thermal fatigue/oxidisation created by cyclical temperatures. Performance is enhanced by reducing under bonnet temperatures, improved air density assists combustion chamber stabilisation, and increased gas velocity is achieve by the coating’s heat retention properties. But it’s not just exhaust systems the coatings can be applied to. You can also coat intakes, calipers, rocker covers, blowers and more. Ask about your specific needs. Available in a polished aluminium, Satin Black and Cast Iron Grey, HPC can apply the right coating to suit your street car, show car, drag car or restoration project.
