From the Desk DARING TO BE DIFFERENT CERTAINLY HAS ITS PRO’S AND CON’S!
Anyone that knows mw, knows that my taste in cars is certainly varied. Sure, I like Torana’s, XW-XY Falcon’s, and all kinds of Mopar muscle cars. But, I have a passion for cars that are different to what most people consider normal. Hence my love of the 50/51 Studebaker – a “love ‘em or hate ‘em” type of car! My interest in seeing oddball builds has been sparked by the US car scene, where people aren’t worried about upsetting those around them, and actually go out of their way to find cars to build that are unusual. I love seeing what people come up with and spend plenty of time on US sites searching for that stuff. Case in point is George Athos’ huge ’74 Chev Monte Carlo featured this issue. How many of you have actually seen one before? And now raise your hand if this would be a model you’d choose to build for yourself? Yeah, thought so… Performance Street Car built its reputation on featuring tough street cars, no matter what the badge might say, and for that reason alone, George’s bulbous coupe deserves its place in PSC. Sure, the paint is showing its age. The interior is still 70-spec and the engine bay won’t impress any show judges, but it’s tough, and for me, that’s all that matters. George drives the wheels off it and enjoys the stares it gets while he does. So whilst owning something wild like this guarantees to turn heads, there’s always a downside, and that usually involves the lack of available parts when you need them the most. I know body panels for my Studebaker were thin on the ground, and guys like George are in the same boat. It can be frustrating and at some point, we’ve all sworn we’ll never do this again, but when the temper settles down, and you secure the bits you need, its happy times again when you can cruise that head-turning, rarely-seen Performance Street Car down the road again. It’s all part of the game we play… See you on the street…

GPC ASIA PACIFIC ACQUIRES RARE SPARES.
GPC Asia Pacific, best known for their Repco brand, has officially become added Rare Spares to their group. Founded in 1974, Rare Spares was the go to shop for those restoring or modifying their early Holden’s, Fords and Chryslers, eventually diversifying into industrial rubber products, pressed metal products, clips and fasteners along with many automotive OEM products. Rare Spares had really cemented themselves as part of Australian Motoring history. Repco has been serving customers for almost 100-years, winning many Customer Service awards during that time. GPC Asia Pacific is the perfect home for the Rare Spares brand.
Finalists No.6 - June 2021 “RSP and Rare Spares will continue to operate under the Rare Spares banner, under my leadership, and will be fully supported by the Repco crew.” Said Rare Spares Managing Director, Lance Corby. “In addition, my existing leadership team and operational structure will remain in place and the RSP and Rare Spares brands will continue to exist and grow in the market. There is only upside to this, you won’t really see a change in the Rare Spares brand at all. Repco has a lot of tools that we can piggy-back off to help our development and supply faster to market – product sourcing, shipping and so on. There are so many synergies with the two companies working together.” Rare Spares will continue to operate alongside Repco and will ensure that automotive enthusiasts and professional workshops around Australia and New Zealand will continue to have access to the parts and accessories they require well into the future…

WHAT’S HAPPENING
B&M RELEASE SHIFTER FOR NAG1 5-SPEED CHRYSLER TRANS
The B&M Magnum Grip Pro-Stick is the only aftermarket shifter available for the NAG1, 5-speed auto trans commonly found in the 300C Chrysler. Having personally owned two of these, I know first hand how the factory shifter has an issue of breaking the plastic clip that holds the spring to take the shifter out of park, jaming the shifter leaving you stranded. I have replaced both of mine with a sturdier unit. These shifters certainly fix that problem and are made to be used with a centre console in modified applications. The reason that there’s been no other shifter available is that in manual shifting mode, the NAG1 shifts from side to side. so to combat this, B&M have incorporated side buttons on the grip handle to retain the digital shifter movements. The kit comes with a Super Duty cable, and all of the necessary hardware to complete the installation.

GOT TO LOVE TECHNOLOGY
Hi Paul, Whilst I still like to have a printed magazine in my hands, I am really starting to get into the whole digital magazine deal. I love that you include video’s within the pages – it certainly adds a whole new perspective to reading a magazine. I’ve also found it useful to be able to click on the advertisers page and go straight to their website to check out what they have on offer. And as I use public transport a lot, having it available to read on my phone makes each trip that much better. Thanks for all the effort you put in. Looking forward to many more issues in the future. For me, it offers the opportunity to be able to continue doing what I do. Sure, it’s not for everyone, but so far, Performance Street Car has built up a big readership that continues to grow daily – something I am very proud of. There’s definitely more to come…
COOTA IS COOL
G’day Paul, I love the coverage of the Coota400 event in the new issue. What a great event it looks like it was. It’s almost like a daylight version of Street Outlaws! We’ve showcased plenty of killer rides both in the build and in finished form that have been masterfully built in house at Pro Flo Performance, and one of the latest, this HK Monaro is one of the toughest yet. Sure, it may not be as wild as some of the cars that the guys build, but whilst the Monaro may not be as over the top visually, its sure to be a wild ride thanks to the big block chosen to power it. It’s cool to see staggered

injection hanging through any bonnet, but when its poking through a classic Aussie muscle car, it’s just that much cooler. Converted to EFI and running a Fuel Tech computer, the injection tops a 632-cube fat block Chev that is sure to make plenty of power, as well as being relatively streetable. The custom 2.5inch stainless headers were fabricated in house and unwind to form a twin, 3.5inch stainless exhaust system.

Backing the engine is a built Turbo 400 auto that feeds to power to the four-linked, sheet-metal Pro Flo signature rear end. Up front, the factory front end has been replaced with a Rod Shop independent version with stainless a-arms, coil-overs and rack and pinion steering. The wheels of choice are the ever-popular Weld V-series, 17x4.5-inch on the front and 15x10-inch on the rear with single bead-locks. The underdash booster and master cylinder operate the 6-piston front and 4-piston rear Wilwood calipers that clamp on 355mm and 300mm discs.

The body has had plenty of attention lavished on it with widened wheel tubs in the rear, reshaped and smoothed-out engine bay and boot area. There’s a new, enlarged trans tunnel and the underside is considerably smoother than it once was. We can’t tell you the final colour combo at this stage as the car is set to be unveiled at the Summernats. Inside, the original GTS centre console should give some clue that the interior makeover is to be a refined GTS style trim, that will no doubt be stitched to the highest standard. At the time this Issue went live, the Monaro was in having the body and paint sorted, with just the trim to do to complete the build. Get to the Summernats if you want to check out the reveal…

Once again, Leo’s looked way outside the square and laid on a couple of silky smooth coats of a Candy Brown that he mixed up himself. Complimenting the body colour is an interior covered in a combination of burnt orange and tan leather that Just Upholstery stitched over the Recaro-style front buckets, reshaped rear bench, door trims and dash pad – the latter sharing the limelight with the body coloured facia that now holds a quartet of Digital gauges and the Kenwood head unit. There’s no centre console, just the shifter wrapped in a matching leather boot. The steering wheel of choice looks like it came straight from a 60’s touring car – fitting the ProTouring theme perfectly. The boot area has had a steel floor added along with an alloy fuel cell – both of which now feature body colour.

The heart of this Valiant is a 440-cube big-block built by drag racing legend Ben Gatt. Sporting a tunnel ram intake with twin 650 Holley carbs, Aeroflow alloy heads and a prepped block full of suitable gear, the engine is all about reliability, proving that Leo plans to drive this Valiant as much as he can. Whilst the 440 isn’t the most powerful big block on the street, it is one of the nicest looking. Painted in a contrasting candy gold, the engine and its components absolutely glow when the bonnet is lifted. Nestled into a completely smooth engine bay, there’s plenty to check out on and around the 440 including
the added polished alloy components, detailed carbs and metal fuel lines from the carbs to the regulator. True Pro-Touring cars have three pedals, and that’s certainly true here. Leo opted for a four-speed manual box behind the engine that feeds the power back to the shortened nine-inch diff via a chrome-moly tailshaft. The diff is located via a four-link with coil-over shocks added for improved handling and ride. Likewise, coil-overs have been fitted to the front end and each corner scoring Wilwood discs and 4-piston calipers inside the oh-so-stylish Ferrada wheels measuring 20x9 and 20x11.5-inches.

32
33
The Valiant made its debut at the Sydney Hot Rod & Custom Auto Expo, and it won’t be the last time the coupe goes on show with planned displays at the upcoming Killer Rides Live #4 and MotorEx in Melbourne before putting plenty of miles on those big, low-profile tyres! That could also include the Performance Street Car Road Trip in 2022. So what’s next? Leo told us he is looking at doing a VF Pacer sedan, and if this build is anything to go by, it should be spectacular! Stay tuned…
THANKS TO: My wife and my brother for helping out. Ben Gatt for the engine. All of the sponsors including Basloc Paints and Mothers Polish along with everyone else that has helped along the way.

STREET MACHINE NATIONALS - DU QUOIN, USA – JUNE 4-6, 2021 Words - Paul Beck Pics - Supplied by Bonnier Events
ThePOWER PARTY
The Continental Tyres Street Machine Nationals returned to DuQuoin, Illonois with around 1200 entrants converging on the fairgrounds to have an extended weekend of blown engines, big tubs and good times!
40
41
The team at Bonnier Events have been running the Street Machine Nationals twice a year for a while now. The first for the year is this big event in Du Quoin, which is followed by an equally impressive event at St. Paul, Minnesota in July. Whilst both events feature plenty to see and do for both the entrants and spectators, the organisers made sure that those who headed to Du Quoin were going to enjoy everything the event had to offer. And it offered plenty! Apart from the obvious show and shine and cruising – both big parts of the Street Machine Nats, the entrants could also take part in a burnout comp and dyno challenge – both designed to flex the considerable muscle being paraded around the fairgrounds.
Du Quoin always has a huge Pro-Street contingent and this year was no different.
42
43
On top of the horsepower competitions, the Street Machine Nationals also has a variety of traders as part of the Performance Marketplace, along with a huge swap meet run by the Eqyptian Antique Auto Club where you could find all kinds of rare parts, tools, equipment, accessories and collectables. For those whose cars are still in the build, this is the place where they spent the most time.
By all accounts, the 2021 Continental Tyres Street Machine Nationals was a huge success for all concerned.
For 2021, there was a new category added to the show and shine awards – the Modern Muscle award. Aimed at those entrants who prefer 2000 and newer model cars, the award offers those with late model Mustangs, GTO’s, Camaro’s, Chargers etc, the opportunity to take home some gold. With more and more people preferring the ride a late model car offers, this is a great initiative from the Bonnier Events people. 44
45
For the most part, the Street Machine Nationals is all about the wild cars that people travel from all over to have on display. Du Quoin always has a huge Pro-Street contingent and this year was no different. All the usual suspects were there including Matthew Hay, Steve Low, Rod Bollini, James Riley, and Tony Netzel to name but a few, proving what everyone already knew – Pro-Street is as popular as ever! Headlining the toughest cars on the planet, was the much anticipated debut of Wally Elders insane pro-street Dodge Daytona. Wally’s slammed Daytona was definitely the star of the show. With a ground-rumbling blown Hemi up front, the Dodge was the most photographed car of the 2021 Continental Tyres Street Machine Nationals. It’s no surprise to see it was awarded Top Pro-Street.
Headlining the toughest cars on the planet, was the much anticipated debut of Wally Elders insane Pro-Street Dodge Daytona.
46
47
By all accounts, the 2021 Continental Tyres Street Machine Nationals was a huge success for all concerned. The weather turned it on, the entrants arrived in droves and the thousands of spectators that poured into the Fairgrounds were treated to an awesome array of cars. What more could you ask for? GENERAL DELIVERY
After building a show-winning HT Monaro in the mid 80’s, Henry K parted with the coupe before starting a new project, a HG Holden Ute. 50
HENRY K - HG HOLDEN UTE WORDS / PICS - PAUL BECK 51
The Monaro won a lot of trophies, over 40 in fact at various shows around the Sydney area. It featured in magazines and cut a fine line on the street. But Henry had other plans to deal with, and the Monaro sat dormant in the garage. It wasn’t long before Henry started looking for a new project, and whilst flicking through the Trading Post, came across a HG Ute that was a roller. It turned out to be very straight and in primer. After parting with $1200 (it was the late 90’s), Henry dragged the new acquisition home where it was parked beside the unused Monaro. What followed was a decision Henry still regrets to this day. The Monaro was relived of its driveline and sold off for a mere $5000, eventually landing in Perth. Henry just shakes his head when he thinks of the value the Monaro would now have. Pity we all don’t own a crystal ball…
As soon as the Ute hit the show scene, the awards started coming, and as the style and performance of the build has progressed over the years, the trophy hauling antics continued on.
52
53
With the aspirated, single carb small block, Powerglide auto and nine-inch diff sitting beside the Ute waiting to get acquainted, Henry decided the time was right to get the ball rolling on his new build. The primered shell was shipped off to Peter and Nick Antoni to make sure the body was paint ready before laying on the PPG White paint – the complete opposite of what Henry had done the Monaro in. Of course, before the colour was added, there were a few changes made to Holden’s design including deleting the fuel filler from the side (it’s now in the bed), the wheel arches have been modified, there’s no visible bolts on the bumpers, the front apron panel is now smoother, and the spare wheel door has been welded up and filled in. With the bonnet lifted, you can clearly see just how smooth the engine bay is, with a considerable amount of work being done on the inner guards and newly install flat firewall. The battery tray has been relocated to under the floor along with the twin brake boosters. When everyone was completely satisfied that the sheet metal was as smooth as it could get, the colour was flowed over the body. Completing the exterior is a custom grille.
54
As the Ute was a roller, Henry had full control over what interior was going to go into the Ute. Before any stitch work could be done, he fabricated a custom steel dash that now holds a quartet of AutoMeter gauges, with the 5-inch tacho from the same catalogue hanging off the side. The dash has been painted black, setting the tone for the rest of the trim, including the SAAS steering wheel. With his part done, Henry called on Ty Pringle to cover the door trims, and headlining in black before the carpet was added and the race-spec Sparco seats were bolted in the same spot a lifeless bench seat once sat. When strapped in by the Sabelt harness belts, Henry can still comfortably reach the B&M Pro-Stick to grab the gears in the Powerglide.
55
Whilst the work was happening on the Ute’s body and interior, Henry was preparing to slot in the driveline that served duty in the Monaro and while that was good for a while, Henry wanted more power, and so after some time powering the Ute, he approached John Feneck at Fenecks Race Engines to build up a new combo to slot into the smoothed-out engine bay. Starting with a Dart block, John added a Callies crank and rods, and blower-spec pistons in readiness for the forced induction that was going to top the engine. A high-volume Mellings oil pump and ASR sump finished off the bottom end. A pair of AFR alloy heads
56
were bolted into place to form the platform for the B&M 250 supercharger, topped with two 600cfm Holley carbs. As you’d expect, the engine is detailed to the enth degree, with all of the alloy polished to a chrome-like finish. The owner-fabricated headers flow into a dual exhaust and have been ceramic coated to keep the show car theme rolling when the bonnet is lifted. Backing the pumped engine is a 2-speed ‘glide built by Johnny’s Automotive featuring beefed up internals, a Dominator converter and B&M trans cooler. The third member of the driveline trio is a Ford 9-inch diff with 3.7-gears courtesy of Chris Soulos.
57
With the new driveline built and installed, the work continued underneath the Ute with the fitment of Lovells lowered coil springs on the front and reset leaf springs on the rear. Koni shocks feature on each corner and give the Ute a much better ride on the road. The dual brake boosters power the Ford drums and HQ discs, that provide ample stopping power. The braking system lives inside the 15x3.5 and 15x10 Weld Pro Star rims and appropriately sized rubber.
As soon as the Ute hit the show scene, the awards started coming, and as the style and performance of the build has progressed over the years, the trophy hauling antics continued on. It’s a testament to the quality of the build. So now it’s at the point where Henry is happy with the Ute, he is more than happy to cruise and show the HG whenever the opportunity arises. He was quick to add though, that there’s always something to add, change or modify. One thing is sure though, after so long on the road, this Holden Ute’s journey is far from over…
THANKS TO: John Feneck -Fenecks Race Engines. Peter & Nick Antoni for the body and paint. John Rigatos – Johnny’s Automotives. Joe & Tony – Pioneer Plating. Chris Soulos for the diff. Bob Wiseman for the brake and booster setup. 58

GEORGE ZAMMIT - 1932 FORD COUPE WORDS / PICS - PAUL BECK
With his competitive Drag Racing days over, George Zammit turned his attention to the project he had stashed away for a rainy day - this oh-so-cool ’32 Ford Coupe.
60

Having always had an interest in Hot Rod’s, he put the feelers out to see what he could find, and he found exactly what he was looking for in an unfinished ’32 Ford three-window coupe project that was sitting idle in Victoria just waiting for someone like George to come along and finish off the build. With the body, chassis and a big pile of parts loaded up and ready for a long trip up the Hume to Sydney, George no doubt spent plenty of time thinking of “where to from here?” The body was unpainted, the chassis was partially completed and the interior was basically non-existent. Sure, there was still plenty of work to do, but our man George was up to the
task, knowing full well the dedication it was going to take to get the coupe finished. Not to mention the time and money needed as well. The coupe was stored away for some three-years whilst George continued racing, but when the day come for the Dragster to be shipped off to its new home, leaving his weekends free, the ’32 was wheeled from storage to occupy the space left vacant from the sale of the Dragster. Now, when George lifted the garage door, he was staring at a partly completed Hot Rod project instead of a ready to rumble Dragster. Four years later, the Coupe drove from the garage under its own power. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves just a bit.
Ample amounts of high-octane fuel is passed through the Borla 8-stack EFI system that’s controlled by a FAST 2.0 computer.
62
63
Let’s start with the body. It’s from the Gibbons factory in the US and features a nice roof chop, and familiar lines that make the ’32 Ford three-window coupe one of the most sought-after Hot Rods on the globe. There’s no denying that red is a popular colour for Hot Rods, and you can understand why when you see them looking this good. For George’s deuce coupe, the colour is Vermillion Red and covers the fully-fendered body from top to bottom. The colour flows into the interior space covering the dash panel and the tilt steering column, which by the way, sits on the left-hand side and is topped with a billet steering wheel. The material of choice is tan leather and is the perfect accompaniment for the body colour. Covering the custom bench seat, fabricated door trims and headlining, the leather makes spending time cruising the Coupe so much more comfortable, as does the electric windows
and air-conditioning – though the latter wasn’t fitted at the time of the shoot. A row of Classic Instruments sits inside a billet surround and keeps George up to date with all the vital info. Though it’s not visible, George installed a Pioneer sound system with a six-stacker and speakers hidden behind the seat. The painted body sits on top of the custom chassis that has been detailed from front to back including all of the components added to the bare chassis rails including the 4-bar front end and ladder bar rear end – both of which have Super Bell springs fitted up. A pair of Pete & Jakes shocks found their way onto the nose while coil-over shocks provide a better ride in the rear. A quartet of discs with GM calipers up front and Wilwood’s on the rear hide behind what some consider to the be ultimate Hot Rod wheel – polished Halibrands that measure 15x7 and 15x10-inches.
Now, when George lifted the garage door, he was staring at a partly completed Hot Rod project instead of a ready to rumble Dragster.
64
65
Being pretty handy on the tools, George took to building the engine for the ’32 himself. Not wanting to go as wild as the blown injected small block that powered his Dragster to 7-sec quarters, but not wanting a stock-spec engine either, George filled the four-bolt main block with a balanced Scat crank, King Rods with Wiseco forged pistons wrapped in Mahle rings and a mild roller cam and Howards lifter combo. From there, he added a pair of reworked heads that now feature larger valves, springs and roller rockers from the Comp Cams catalogue. Ample amounts of high-octane fuel is passed through the Borla 8-stack EFI system that’s controlled by a FAST 2.0 computer. After the MSD ignition fires the 385-cube small block into life, the ceramic coated block hugger headers come into play and dumps the spent gases through a stainless exhaust system and dual Borla stainless mufflers.
It’s taken George around 4-years and $100,000 dollars to get to this point in the ‘32’s resurrection, and since it’s been on the road, George has amassed some 23 awards at various shows.
The Turbo 700R4 three-speed auto with overdrive, that backs the injected small block was built in the US at Animal Performance and features an inhouse converter with a 3200rpm stall speed. Gear selections are made via the carbon-fibre B&M Shifter. The power is sent rearward via a shortened GM tailshaft and ends up at the 3.5-geared nine-inch diff. The engine produces great usable power – just the thing George wants for the coupe. 66

It’s taken George around 4-years and $100,000 dollars to get to this point in the ‘32’s resurrection, and since it’s been on the road, George has amassed some 23 awards at various shows. And he’s not finished just yet, with more cruising and showing planned now the Summer months are here, but he did say that if the right offer was to come along at some stage, he may be tempted to part company with the Coupe. Until that happens, he is more than happy to idle the ’32 out of the garage and out onto the open road as often as he possibly can…

WILD AT HEART
With the sale of his tough Cortina pending, Billy Berches went looking for an equally tough replacement. He found this big-cube Holdenpowered Torana south of the border...
BILLY BERCHES - 1974 LH TORANA WORDS / PICS - PAUL BECK 72
73
This isn’t the first time we’ve featured Billy’s cars. His pro-street Datsun 1200 and the now sold Cortina were both featured in Killer Rides and when combined with the Torana, Billy’s thirst for tough street cars is more than obvious. Obviously, there’s no loyalty to anyone brand, but when he went searching for something to park in the garage where the Cortina once sat, the only stipulation was that it had to be a five-seater. The Datto is just a four-seater, and with his wife and three kids all enjoying cruising in something cool, the new ride had to offer enough seating for all. For Billy, the Torana – a genuine SL/R, ticked all the boxes. Without even driving the car, Billy did the deal and shipped it home to NSW…
THANKS TO: Jason at Rocket Industries. Joe at J Performance Automatics. Mick Turbo. Mick’s Motorsports. Brett at Wicked Industries. Tim the Fabricator. Tow and Go. Pro-Tilt Towing. Rob Sarkis. My wife and kids…
Apart from the reverse cowl bonnet and LX headlights, the Torana pays homage to its SL/R heritage, as does the yellow and black paint scheme. The original intention was to get the Torana registered and just drive it. He promised himself that he wouldn’t spend any money on this one as it seemingly had everything he wanted. But, and there’s always a but when you buy a car sight unseen, Billy soon found out that the Torana had a Powerglide fitted and for Billy, that had to go. And so the money started flowing out of his wallet again. A three-speed Turbo 400 auto, built by Joe at J Performance Automatics, soon took up residency in the tunnel after being fitted with tougher internals and a TCE converter with a stall speed of 4800rpm. A new custom tailshaft was fabricated and connects the box with the 9-inch diff, which uses 31-spline axles and a Tru-Trak centre to handle the power coming from up front. 74
75
Speaking of the powerplant, the previous owner had resisted the temptation of slotting in an LS-based engine and decided instead to get the crew from Addicted Performance build a big cube, aspirated Holden engine. The Commodore-spec block was prepped before scoring a stroker rotating assembly taking the cubic capacity from 308 to a more impressive 383-cubes. A roller cam and lifter kit from Comp Cams was added, giving the tough engine a menacing idle. A pair of alloy COME Racing heads were next
76
on the parts list and top the long motor off perfectly. With so many options available for the induction system, the decision was made to go with EFI, but instead of going with some boring factory manifold, this engine is topped with a custom, 8-throttle body set-up from Shaun’s Custom Alloy. Not only does it look impressive, it performs just as well with Bosch injectors all controlled by a Haltech 2500 ECU. On the dyno, the stretched Holden produced 620hp, more than enough power to keep Billy smiling…
87
The body and paint are just how it was when Billy became the owner. Apart from the reverse cowl bonnet and LX model headlights, the Torana pays homage to its SL/R heritage, as does the yellow and black paint scheme. The 4.2-litre badges remain on the front guards as a bit of fun. Inside, it’s more of the same. Well, almost. Sure, the Holden designers had no intention of fitting a pair of Recaro seats for the driver and passenger, but the previous owner did, and they certainly look the part, not to mention they offer plenty of support over the original buckets. The rear bench seat and the majority of the interior is as per the factories wishes. From the wood-grained dash,
78
SL/R steering wheel and matching gauges, there’s plenty to this interior that mimics of how the car would have looked when it rolled off the showroom floor back in 1974. The Pro Bandit shifter has been adapted to the console and there’s a couple of added AutoMeter gauges to keep Billy on top of what’s going on with that engine. And whilst the radio may look like the Holden engineers placed it in the dash, where in fact, the 70’s style hides a bunch of technology including Bluetooth etc so Billy and his family can enjoy plenty of cruising tunes through a quartet of speakers powered by Focal amps.
On the dyno, the stretched Holden produced 620hp, more than enough power to keep Billy smiling…
79
One area that has seen plenty of changes is the underside. Hiding in behind the 17x4.5 and 15x10 V-Series Weld wheels is a complete suspension and brake upgrade. Thanks to the fitment of the fullyadjustable tube front end, adjustable rear arms and Koni shocks, the Torana has never handled or steered so well. It’s the same for the braking. With the ’74-spec brakes removed and thrown in the bin, there’s now a pair of Wilwood vented and drilled discs with 6-spot calipers on the front working with the drum brakes on the rear end to provide more than enough stopping power.
For Billy, the Torana – a genuine SL/R, ticked all the boxes. Without even driving the car, Billy did the deal and shipped it home to NSW…
Now that Billy has sorted out the little issues he has found on the Torana, its fate is sealed. There will be plenty of cruising with his mates and his family to be had and he has even suggested that the Torana may make the long haul for the Performance Street Car Road Trip in 2022… 80

CHATTANOOGA PRO-STREET & AUTO NATIONALS WORDS - PAUL BECK PICS SUPPLIED BY KEVIN ROSS
It was wall to wall blowers, tubs and high-horsepower as the Chattanooga Pro-Street and Auto Nationals hit the ground running. 82
83
Kicking off with a Pre-event party at Farm to Fork, one of the events sponsors, the car park was overflowing with all kinds of pure Pro-street machinery, creating quite a spectacle, setting the standard for the three days ahead. For those who ventured to the restaurant to check out the cars, they were treated to around 30 of the baddest, most insane rides imaginable. Blowers, dual carbs, injector hats, and big and little wheels were everywhere. It was a great way to start the event. Continuing the trend, Friday evening saw the cars cruise out for another impromptu show and shine.
Come Saturday, the Pro-Street entourage made their way to Brainard Optimist Dragway where the show and shine shared the spotlight with the cars parading down the track, showing off the horsepower each car housed.
Come Saturday, the Pro-Street entourage made their way to Brainard Optimist Dragway where the show and shine shared the spotlight with the cars parading down the track, showing off the horsepower each car housed. There was also a burnout competition held for all entrants, not just the Pro-Street portion of the event and after the smoke cleared, the South East Nostalgia Drag Racing group took over the track and showcased everything they were about, with big smokey burnouts and hard launches down the track in front of an appreciative crowd. 84
85
Pro-Street fans in Australia are so jealous that our US counterparts get to cruise, show and race their Pro-Street cars together at an event like this. Whilst we can show and race our vehicles here, cruising the wilder versions on the streets are frowned upon by those in Authority to don’t look kindly at mountain motors, massive rubber and race-spec interiors. Thanks to promoters Kevin Ross, Amy Farrow and Eric Hugh Harris, Chattanooga could be the new home of Pro-Street in the USA as the word gets around about this new event on the calender.

NO PREP STREET OUTLAWS COMES TO SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK
Gup and the Powercruise team are introducing a new series of Street Racing to Sydney Motorsport Park - No Prep Street Outlaws, aimed directly at the hardcore, tough-street racers. There is a Top 50 list happening, with all drivers having to race the “Gate Keeper” to get into the battle. From there, its a fight to get to the number one spot. So the rules are simple. All racers will need to be licensed at $30 per event or $75 annually - and when there’s plans to run 8-10 events per year, you’d be crazy not to jump on the annual license. To get your licesnse sorted, go to www.racers. world and jump onto the app. Apart from that, its the typical “run what you’ve brung and hope you’ve brung enough!” The first event is set to happen on Saturday night, August 7th between 6pm and 10.30pm. There’s a new Facebook page set up that will have all the info you need, so keep an eye on that one. Check it out here - https://www.facebook.com/ groups/500541684607562 This is going to be wild - as you’d expect from Gup and the Powercruise team. TOUGHLuxury Built by Chevrolet as a “Gentleman’s Muscle Car”, the Monte Carlo’s life in the fast lane was short lived due to the buying public moving away from performance cars. George Athos fixed that…
GEORGE ATHOS - 1974 CHEV MONTE CARLO WORDS / PICS - PAUL BECK 94
95
After moving from Sydney to Brisbane, George went looking for an American car that was different to what he was seeing cruising the streets. He certainly got what he wanted when he found this 1974 Monte Carlo coupe that was owned by a 73-year-old guy. It was totally stock and the owner had stripped it down to repaint it several years before. The bonus for George was that it had already been converted to right hand drive. With the right amount of cash burning a hole in
his pocket, the deal was done and George was cruising the Chev with a big smile. Having always been into performance cars, the stock driveline powering the big coupe wasn’t cutting it for George. A decision was made to bring in good mate Peter Madden to build up a stout small block that could get this land yacht moving at a rapid rate of knots. By now, you’ve probably commented on how big that front end is. Trust me, it’s even bigger when you see it in person!
To date, the engine has produced 524hp! That definitely livens up the big Chev! 96
97
Peter took a prepped 2-bolt 350-cube block and fitted up a rotating system featuring a reground crank swinging Chevy X-rods and cast flat top pistons. The hydraulic roller cam and lifter kit came from Comps Cams and gives the tough small block a distinct, “don’t mess with me” growl at idle. A pair of AFR heads were bolted into place and were joined by an Edelbrock Performer Airgap intake that plays host to a single, QFT Brawler Drag Series 750cfm carb that guzzles lots of Premium 98 fuel. The ignition system comprises of an MSD ProBillet distributor, Mallory coil, custom leads and an MSD 6AL with rev limiter – that provides more than enough spark to fire the small block into life. After the spark ignites, a pair of Hooker headers shows the gases the door via a twin, 3-inch exhaust system incorporating Hooker mufflers. Now residing back in Sydney, and to keep the engine running sweetly, George has Ned at Hercules Competition Engines look after the tune and maintenance of the 350. To date, the engine has produced 524hp! That definitely livens up the big Chev!
By now, you’ve probably commented on how big that front end is. Trust me, it’s even bigger when you see it in person! After a couple of failed transmission builds, George had Joe at J Performance Transmissions rebuild the Turbo 350 auto that’s mated up to the engine. The full manual box features only the best internals and relies on a Converter Shop 3800rpm converter to make sure the big Monte Carlo leaves the line the way it should. Gear selections are made via a Hurst ProMatic shifter. Down the back, there’s a Chev 10-bolt diff with a 4.56-geared Posi-Traction centre. The underside is fairly basic with Gabriel Ultra shocks on each corner along with Kings super low springs. The braking system still comprises of discs and drums behind the 15x3.5-inch and 15x10-inch Weld wheels wrapped in ET Street rubber.
98
99
Apart from being what some would call “morbidly obese”, the Monte Carlo body is almost how the factory specified. The reverse cowl scoop adapted to the original bonnet was an afterthought that was added when George became the owner. He also recoloured the stylish, half vinyl roof from beige to black that looks much better against the Mazda Soul Red paint. Inside, as George admits, it could do with a makeover. If nothing else, its
comfy. The cream vinyl covers the split front bench and spacious rear seats. From the driver’s position, all the vital information is in easy view, thanks to the AutoMeter tacho and trio of SAAS gauges mounted below the woodgrain dash. Matching the dash is a wood and black alloy version that suits the Monte Carlo’s tough car theme. When out on the open road, George gets his cruising tunes via a Sony/Pioneer combination stereo system.
...the desire to give the big coupe a run down the Sydney Dragway quarter mile is growing stronger and will happen sometime soon.
100
101
Now that George is back amongst the flourishing Sydney modified car scene, he gets the big Chev out as much as he can with the gang from the Muscle Car Outlaws Car Club, attending all kinds of meets around the area, and each time, the Monte Carlo certainly grabs its fair share of attention. So, while that’s is his main goal at the moment, the desire to give the big coupe a run down the Sydney Dragway quarter mile is growing stronger and will happen sometime soon. When asked what he thinks the Chev will run, he’s a realist with his answer – “Maybe a 12 or thereabouts.” Let’s face it, it would probably be the heaviest car at the meet and with a small block sitting in an engine bay that could swallow a Hemi easily, he’s probably right on the money. I reckon that if this small block were to retire early, there would be a fair chance George would be getting Ned to build him one tough big block to repower the Monte Carlo. Then we will see if size does indeed matter…
Apart from being what some would call “morbidly obese”, the Monte Carlo body is almost how the factory specified.
