From the Desk THIS ISSUE IS DEDICATED TO TWO LEGENDS OF THE MODIFIED CAR SCENE THAT RECENTLY LEFT US. JIM BROADLEY AND CHIC HENRY. I’m still in disbelief that we’ve had to farewell not one, but two hardcore car guys - guys that offered so much to the Car Scene, that things would have been so different now without their input. First off, we received the sad news that “Diamond” Jim Broadley had passed away, leaving behind the legacy that was Diablo Motors. Jim’s larger than life personality drew people in like a magnet. If you had visited any major car shows, you’d see Jim and his wife Coralie manning the huge Diablo stand that always had some rare and exotic gear for sale, that always had a big crowd handing of money to own a piece of hard to find gear. I remember fondly the conversations Jim and I shared at each Summernats, with Diablo Motors being one of the first places we stopped in on day one. Like many, I’m gong to miss you old mate. Then, on our way to Narrandera Rod Run, I received a call that saddened us all. Chic Henry had lost his long battle with cancer. I’d known Chic was fighting as hard as he could, and after a recent phone call from him, I think he knew that his time with us all was coming to an end. To many, Chic was Mr Summernats - the man that created an event that changed the modified car scene forever. To me, he was much more. Chic and I shared a love of ‘62 Chev’s back when I had my bright pink Belair sedan, and like him, I was passionate for the scene in general. Our paths were always destined to cross and we spent plenty of time together talking about cars and reliving some of the old days. They were great times that I will cherish forever. Away from the car scene, Chic was just as passionate about his family and those around him that he considered his extended family. It’s hard to believe that both of Gentleman have cruised onto a better place. In their memory, this Issue of Performance Street Car is dedicated to both Jim Broadley and Chic Henry. May you both Rest In Peace...

HEATHCOTE RACEWAY BEING PREPPED FOR 400 THUNDER ASSAULT

In a short period of time, Lance Warren and his dedicated team have certainly made some welcomed changes to Heathcote Park Raceway since taking ownership. And with a deadline looming for the 400 Thunder series to attend the track, Lance has taken on the task of having the entire track and braking area resurfaced to ensure the best possible racing surface for those racers intending on taking part in the event scheduled for April 30th / May 1st.

GRUDGE KINGS TO TURN THE EARTH JULY 2ND

There’s going to be so much horsepower going down the Sydney Dragway quarter mile on July 2, that the earth may spin just a little faster than normal. Widely regarded as the number one Pro-Street drag meet in Australia, and definitely the richest with lots of prize money up for grabs, it’s no wonder the biggest hitters in the ProStreet scene will be on hand to put on quite a show. Along with the racing, there will be a huge show ‘n’ shine on the Eastern Hill with lots of Food Vans on hand to feed the masses. More info can be found at www.grudgekings.net

With new LED lighting in the process of being added, there’s no doubt Heathcote Park Raceway is the Premier Drag Racing Facility in Victoria. Well done to all involved. 10

UPDATE ENTRY NUMBERS TO BE CAPPED!

To ensure we can take on the massive task of staging this first event with minimal hassles, I’ve decided to put a cap on the first Road Trip. The magic number is 200! Now, of course this is still a big number of cars to cruise over six-day, but it will be much more manageable than many more hundreds. So here’s the deal. If you are planning to be part of the two hundred chosen cars, better get your entry in now to secure one of those spots. Remember, the entry fee is a donation of a minimum $50 - all of which will be given directly to our charity partner - GOTCHA4LIFE! Get onto it now! 9

KILLER RIDES SHOW STANDOUT AWARD

At selected events we plan to hand out our Killer Rides Show Standout award to a car that we think is deserving. Now this may not necessarily be a full-tilt show car or the car that has the highest horsepower engine – it will just be a car that grabs out attention. And there’s no need to wait for the Trophy Presentation as we will be awarding the trophy to the owner ourselves, so that they car proudly display it with their car during the show. The first one handed out was at the Narrandera Rod Run at Easter where Les Piggot’s all-steel ‘35 Ford three-window coupe appealed to us. Congrats Les!

HANGING FOR THE ROAD TRIP!

G’day Paul, I’m a long-time reader of what you do, from way back in the Extreme Magazine days to your latest digital version of Performance Street Car, and have enjoyed every single issue. Like many people I know, we are looking forward to seeing the convoy of cars taking part in the Road Trip rolling into Albury/Wodonga. For years I have been watching videos of the Hot Rod Power Tour and seeing how the towns folk line the footpaths with their chairs and refreshments taking in the atmosphere. We hope to do the same when your event rolls into town. Can’t wait until October! Bring it on. Roger W via Messenger.

THE WORLD IS AGAINST US!

Hi Paul, Is the world telling us custom car owners something? Do they not want us to cruise our cars? First it was Covid putting an end to life as we knew it, cancelling every event over the past couple of years. Then, just as restrictions were being somewhat relaxed, fuel prices have gone through the roof, making it hard to justify spending upwards of $100 for a tank of fuel! So, the car mostly sits parked in the garage. Now, the bloody wet weather looks like its set in for weeks! It would seem that Mother Nature is no fan of what we do. Andy J Via Email Hi Andy, I am feeling your pain. The Chev doesn’t see as much use as we’d like for the very reasons you’ve outlined. Surely, things will get better soon. Hang in there mate, cruising time is coming!

BARGO PUB RUN FAN

Hi Paul, What a great day the Bargo cruise was. No one cared about the rain, they were only interested in the tough cars that were there to cruise from Thirlmere to Bargo Pub. As a spectator from out of the area, I was pleasantly surprised to see just how welcoming the locals were to the amount of high-powered street (and strip) cars invading their town. Well done to all involved. I can’t wait to tag along next time in my car. Ronnie G Via Email

BATHURST AUTOFEST A WINNER!

G’day Paul, Just wanted to do a shout out to everyone that made the Bathurst Autofest a possibility. This year was the first time I had visited the event and it certainly won’t be the last. I was only there for the Saturday and Sunday, and the amount of action taking place at the venue was nothing short of mind-blowing. Next year, I’m hoping to have the HR finished so the family and I can cruise down in it. Great mag by the way… Tony L Via Messenger G’day Tony, I know Les and his team put in a huge effort for all of his events, and Bathurst is definitely one of the more popular that they do. I’m sure that by now, you’ve spotted our massive coverage of the event in this issue, starting on page 72. Enjoy and see you next year!

Hi Ronnie, There’s no doubt the people of those area’s a pretty used to hearing the Thirlmere Fryers idling around their once quiet little country towns. When a hundred or so ground-pounders roll into town, it’s very hard to keep a low profile, so you might as well put on a spectacle for all to enjoy. I’ll see you at the next one.

G’day Roger, I have done the same thing many times, and in fact, that was part of the motivation of bringing the Road Trip to Australia. Like you, I can’t wait for the Road Trip to roll out of Wollongong. 18

HYPO

PRO FLO PERFORMANCE_LX TORANA WORDS – PAUL BECK PICS - CHARLIE SANT / KNGR MEDIA

HATCHBACK

Yet again, the team at Pro Flo Performance set their sights on building a blown, injected Torana streetcar! Like many cars that come from the Pro Flo workshop, this Torana is copping the full-monty, with full fabrication happening from the front to the rear and everywhere in between. The engine is an obvious improvement over what ‘The General’ could have ever offered and is based on an LS2, with a host of top shelf gear added internally before the blower and EFI injector hat were added to get the blood rushing just a little faster. That spectacular engine is nestled into a reworked engine bay that now has fabricated firewall and inner guards as well as the underside of the bonnet. The radiator support encloses the alloy radiator and fills the gap between it and the nose cone. As good as it looks in raw steel, when the paint goes on, the engine bay will be next level.

17-INCH POLISHED WELD WHEELS 21

The amazing fabrication continues on the Torana’s underside with flat floors, custom four-link and suspension and an exhaust system that proves that less is more. The rear beaver panel has been cut to allow an exit for the exhaust system and the sheet-metal diff houses the right stuff to handle anything that blown powerplant up front can push through it. The rear wheel tubs swallow the street-spec polished Weld Wheels, with 17-inch versions tucked up under the front guards.

...an LS2, with a host of top shelf gear added internally before the blower and EFI injector hat were added to get the blood rushing just a little faster.

22

So far, the interior has the rear seat replaced by the fabricated wheel tubs, the new trans tunnel, a pair of Recaro seats and the Turbo 400’s shifter. It may not look like much right now, but you know that when this car comes back for final fit up after the paint and trim is completed, the interior space will be as good as every other part of this build. 23

When this Torana does leave the workshop, it will be a completely, finished, turn-key car in typical Pro Flo style. It will be tough, streetable thanks to the EFI topped blown LS2 and will, without doubt, be capable of holding its own at any show. Until then, you can just salivate over these build pics and wait patiently until the finished product is done and dusted.

HISTORY

Almost 30-years after terrorising opponents on every quarter mile strip, the iconic COME-1 Torana is back. Same style. Same driveline. Same Attitude. New driver!

REPEATS

Dave Andrews

COME RACING LJ TORANA

Words / Pics - Paul Beck Race Pics - Joe Crispin 26

27

Dave Andrews had been very close to owning one of his dream cars, this very LJ Torana, a while back, but circumstances ensured he missed out by a matter of days. But, after flicking through Facebook one day, someone posted a pic of the COME1 Torana and asked if anyone knew the whereabouts. Dave’s attention instantly locked onto the thread, checking it regularly to see if anyone replied. And guess what? The new owner posted telling the world it was sitting in his garage, untouched from when he purchased it from Sam and Issy Blumenstien – the original creators and owners of the Torana they used to promote their Chev Offroad & Marine Engines business. Dave couldn’t help himself and contacted the owner for a chat. To cut a long story short, the owner wanted to part company with it, and Dave had the right amount of folding stuff to make the deal happen. Proof that good things do come to those that wait…

28

Now this isn’t the first Torana Dave has had in his garage. You’d remember his blown, injected PRO LC that was bright green with green flames. It was a tough, show-winning Pro-Street car that still packs a punch for the new owner. He also owns the V8-powered, Pro-Street HB Torana – on of the OG Pro-Street cars from back in the day. To Dave’s credit, the HB (also green) has been kept the way it was and is instantly recognisable when Dave punts it down the quarter. There’s also a highly-detailed red LX sedan and another Pro-Street red LJ that he has stashed away in the home garage. But it’s the COME Racing Torana that now has his full attention.

With so much history surrounding this car, there was no way Dave was going to remove any of the signage adorning the Torana’s panels.

29

With so much history surrounding this car, there was no way Dave was going to remove any of the signage adorning the Torana’s panels. But to make sure no one was to get upset, he sought permission from Sam and Issy to leave the signage as is – even though the phone number is no longer current. The yellow paint is still the same paint that was laid onto the skin way back when this Torana was first put on the strip. The hornet scoop may be considered old-school, but with almost 30-years under its belt, what part of this LJ isn’t old-school? The rear wing and parachute complete the exterior picture.

One of the big selling points for Dave was that the COME Racing 383-cube Holden engine was still providing the power after all those years sitting in that tube engine bay.

Flicking open either door is like taking a trip down drag racing memory lane. Whilst the bar work surrounding the interior space was fine “back in the day”, Dave had good mate and owner of Pro Street Industries, Matt Marsh add some extra bar work to make the Torana that much safer. The cage wraps around a pair of black vinyl-covered race seats that sit amongst raw aluminium covering the floor, trans tunnel and the tubbed rear section. A period correct Grant steering wheel tops the racespec column with necessary gauges being added to the original Torana dash. A Hurst Quarter stick shifter (minus its housing) sits on the fabricated tunnel, with a switch panel to operate everything sitting neatly beside it. The passenger footwell plays host to the MSD ignition system. The interior may not be the most up-to-date or the flashiest you’ll ever come across but it does get the job done, and for the 9-seconds that Dave needs it to perform, that’s all that matters… 30

31

THANKS TO: Ross Torrisi for giving me the opportunity to buy

the car. Glen and Pam Durham from G-Force Performance Centre for their ongoing help. Matt, Kayley and Josh at Pro-Street Industries for all the fabrication work. Last but not least, my partner Jess and the kids – I’d be lost without you guys!

One of the big selling points for Dave was that the COME Racing 383-cube Holden engine was still providing the power after all those years sitting in that tube engine bay. The five-litre block has been filled with some of the most exotic gear available for the humble Holden engine at the time. Sam and Issy machined up one of their special stroker cranks and mated it up with a set of COME Racing rods to take the capacity out to a point where the boys were happy. A special grind solid roller cam found its way into the stretched Holden, with the tough bottom end all sealed up with a modified sump. The cylinder heads are also part of what

32

makes this Holden engine special. The alloy heads were designed, modified and taken to their limits by Sam and Issy and feature only the best components under the alloy covers. The intake manifold is a Harrop unit that has been further enhanced by Wilson to be more in tune with the 383’s needs. A single 950cfm carb pushes plenty of VP Racing QM25 fuel through the engine for the MSD ignition system to ignite, with the gases produced shown the door via a pair of fabricated 4-into-1 headers. There is a nitrous system plumbed in, but to date, Dave has been running the combo naturally aspirated. So far…

33

A 5500rpm converter fronts the purpose-built Powerglide that feeds the power through an alloy tailshaft to the very-narrow 9-inch diff with 35-spline internals that is located via a four-link and coil-overs. Strange discs and calipers live inside the 15x14-inch Convo-Pro wheels and 32x16-inch slicks. Up the front, the fabricated chassis (built by Shane Cable) uses struts with coil overs, rack and pinion steering, and Strange discs and calipers that are hiding behind the 15x4-inch Centerline Pro-Stock rims. Sure, there’s nothing exotic on the Torana’s underside, but it still works well considering how long ago the work was completed.

There is a nitrous system plumbed in, but to date, Dave has been running the combo naturally aspirated. So far… 34

Dave has only had the Torana back on the track a couple of times and is still sorting out a few things, but it is consistent and it’s that trait that landed him the Runner-Up position in the V8 Holden N/A Class at the recent Holden Nationals held at Heathcote Park Raceway. There are no plans to change the car too much, but there are things that will need upgrading eventually. Until then, Dave is just happy jumping behind the legendary COME 1 Torana and laying down plenty more passes! Sometimes dreams do come true… 35

s ' t I SHOWTIME Back for its eleventh year, the annual Showcars Melbourne packed out Moonee Valley Racecourse with an amazing mix of show cars, street cars and competition cars!

40

SHOWCARS MELBOURNE_MOONEE VALLEY RACECOURSE WORDS – PAUL BECK PICS – CHAD SILVEY

The Melbourne modified car scene is well known for supporting events. I jokingly tell people that Melbournian’s will line up in the thousands for the opening of a toilet door! So, it came as no surprise to hear that thousands of people filed through the gates at the Racecourse to drool over the cars on display – both indoors and outside in the sunshine.

41

Before even getting inside the buildings, the punters needed to make their way through lots of cool rides set up across the expansive paved area. After walking under the Rare Spares inflatable, spectators were greeted with a mix of tough street cars, hot rods, minitrucks, resto muscle cars and full-tilt drag cars, including Mike Trahar’s blown ’53 Studebaker, topping off the list of high-horsepower cars glistening in the sun. You could easily spend a couple of hours checking out the killer rides on show, and most did, before heading into the indoor area to see what the show car side of the event had to offer.

42

Inside, there was a bevy of show cars set up with full displays, showing every part of the build that makes these cars so special.

43

Inside, there was a bevy of show cars set up with full displays, showing every part of the build that makes these cars so special. Choosing the Top 5 Cars of Show was always going to be a mammoth task, but one that the show judges took on regardless, ending up with a list that included Jack & Heath Madgwick’s EH “NO SAY”, Matt Olver’s ’34 Coupe “VENOM”, Frank Darmanin’s “PROGM8” VH Commodore, Dean Rickard HT Monaro “69GMHT” and John Corigliano’s white XTGT Falcon that was unveiled at the show. Frank’s PROGM8 Commodore also took home Top Elite after it was unveiled earlier in the event.

44

45

The Showcars Melbourne event is also a feeder show for the upcoming Meguiar’s MotorEx event with two cars selected from this show to go into the list of Superstar finalists. It was no surprise to see the PROGM8 VH Commodore score a spot at MotorEx and this year it will be joined by Kevin & Margaret Baird’s amazing FX Holden that was built by the Deluxe Rod Shop. Of course, there were so many high-quality, high-impact cars on hand, that choosing just two to attend MotorEx as finalists must have been a hard decision. There was quality everywhere you looked including Chris Borg’s stunning FJ Ute, Adam Reid’s blown Pro-Street Nova, Lou Ackovski’s TOXICQ injected big-block HQ sedan, and Greg Angus’ dynamic blown duo – the blown HT Monaro and blown ’57 Chev coupe. To name just a few.

And let’s face it, who doesn’t want to cruise their cool custom ride along the water ways under brilliant blue skies?

46

47

Like the ten shows held before it, the 2022 Showcars Melbourne event not only bought together probably the finest mix of cars and bikes together, but also attracted a huge crowd, making this one of the most successful in the events history. Next up for Elvis and his team is the always anticipated Father’s Day event in St Kilda where a mass of cars will take over not just Ackland Street, but every available footpath, side street and carpark. So If you want to impress Dad on Father’s Day, take the trip to St Kilda. You won’t be disappointed. www.showcarsmelbourne.com.au

SECONDUND TIME ARO

You’d think that someone who races a Pro-Stock Pontiac down the quarter at warp speed, would have a street car that has an abundance of horsepower turning the rear tyres. Well you’d be right…sort of!

Jason Hedges

1972 XY FALCON UTE Words / Pics - Paul Beck

50

51

It was an old Farm ute, with every panel almost perfectly preserved as if the Ute had been locked away not long after beginning its life on the land.

Jason Hedges has proven himself as a force to be reckoned with in the Pro-Stock ranks of Australian Drag Racing, winning races and finishing in the Top 3 in recent National Championships amongst some hardcore competition. But before he joined the Group One bracket, Jason cut his teeth in his tough street car – an XY Falcon sedan that regularly ran under ten seconds with wheels-up launches always getting the crowds and assembled photographers entertained. With plenty of passes made in the sedan, Jason set about building a new street and strip car – another XY Falcon, but this time a Ute, this actual Ute. Jason built it up in readiness for racing and then, before it could turn one wheel in anger at the track, he

52

sold the Ute as a roller to a guy in Perth with the one stipulation that if he ever wanted to get out of it, Jason needed to be the first phone call the new owner made. After a few years, Jason got that phone call. The owner wanted to downsize his collection and kept his promise to offer the Ute to Jason before making the sale public. The conversation started with the owner offering up an asking price to which Jason made a counter-offer. Two days later, the owner accepted the offer and loaded the Ute up to send back home. Instead of coming home to Sydney, Jason had it trained to Adelaide where Lincoln Tucker at LJT Restorations reassembled the Falcon, transforming it from race car to streetcar. That was some eight years ago…

53

Jason just happens to be one of those guys that has bargains fall into his lap. He found this Ute and couldn’t believe his luck. It was an old Farm ute, with every panel almost perfectly preserved as if the Ute had been locked away not long after beginning its life on the land. And because the Ute was so straight, Jason knew this Falcon hauler could only be painted one colour – Onyx Black. The boys at Twin’s Panel and Paint stripped the body down to its bare bones, made just a few slight repairs and then rolled the prepped body and associated panels into the spray booth for colour. The gloss black soon showed of the gun-barrel straight sheet metal, but needed something else to compliment the colour. Orange GT-stripes were laid onto each side, with the familiar GT black-outs being added to the shakerequipped bonnet in satin black. As for body mods, there’s a custom, three-piece hard lid covering the load area and the fuel filler has been removed for a much smoother look. Apart from that, it’s classic XY Falcon…

When Jason first built the Ute, the original intention was to punt it down the 1320 at full-noise...

Inside, the racer-spec interior has been redone to make the Ute much more street-friendly. Whilst the Pete Cleary fabricated roll-cage is still in place, the rest of the interior is almost a replica of the front half of a GT Falcon of the era, with the low back buckets replacing the race seats and the rest of the trim recovered to suit.

54

55

When Jason first built the Ute, the original intention was to punt it down the 1320 at full-noise, and to do that, he had a big cube small-block Windsor between the chassis rails that featured a host of top shelf gear including a unique sheet-metal hi-rise intake manifold that held a single carb high in the air. These days though, with Jason racing in Pro-Stock, he didn’t need another 1000hp street car. When he became the owner of the Ute for the second time, he bought it as he sold it – engineless. With his priorities changed, Jason decided to buy a crate engine from the USA to slot into the Falcon’s bay. The 302-cube Windsor is mild at best and probably only makes 300hp, but for Jason, that’s fine. He still has the XY sedan that he used to race before the Ute appeared, so if he needs to feel that big horsepower rumble on the street, he can jump into it.

But before he joined the Group One bracket, Jason cut his teeth in his tough street car – an XY Falcon sedan that regularly ran under ten seconds with wheels-up launches... As it is now, his wife can cruise the Ute with ease and its as reliable as a brand-new car. There’s no overheating issues and it can handle driving in any condition easily. A near stock C4 auto backs the small block and feeds the ‘power’ to a braced 9-inch diff that has 35-spline Mark Williams axles and a mini-spool, which is located with mono-leafs with Caltracs. The rear end remains from the original build and is perfect if Jason ever decides to take the Ute racing again. The front end has changed since Jason parted with it initially, with the new owner fitting RRS components to the front end, resulting in the shock towers to be shaved – making the Windsor look way too small in the Falcon’s engine bay. A complete Wilwood braking system hides behind 15x6 and 15x10 Weld ProStar wheels. Jason describes the Ute as a “tame daily driver surrounded by a bullet-proof chassis”. You could easily drop in a 1000hp driveline and go racing. 56

57

Since having it back in his possession, Jason is happy with how the Ute has progressed. He gets to cruise it regularly, knowing its reliability will always get him home without a hassle, all the while enjoying the looks and thumbs up everywhere he goes. Seems everyone loves a classic Falcon…

Fate is a funny thing. You may not realise it at the time, but sometimes it just happens. As luck would have it, on this fateful day, Danny decided to pull into McDonalds in Geelong for a feed. At the same time he happened to glance out the window, a HR Ute cruised passed and caught his eye – and in particular, the unique sticker on the back window. No doubt that Ute stirred up some memories at the time, but it wasn’t until a few years

later that Danny saw the same Ute pop up for sale – still with that sticker attached to the window. With fate as his motivation, Danny jumped on the phone and bought the Ute sight unseen. And that is how fate works… Danny probably didn’t realise it at the time, but that purchase was going to turn into a major rebuild…eventually. Initially, Danny used his new purchase as a daily driver, complete with a sixpack and 5-speed manual box.

plenty of hours were lavished onto the sheet metal to make sure it was going to be straight enough for the new colour.

62

63

Remembering his previous HR Ute, Danny wanted to go to the next level with this one. The future rebuild actually started with the purchase of the 6/71 blower. But we all know that a big blower is useless unless its pushing air and fuel into a suitable V8 engine. Did you hear that? Its fate coming down the road yet again. “I was lucky enough to find an engine that was built by Drag Racer Aaron Hambridge. After ringing him and confirming that it was in fact built by him, I purchased it!”, Danny explained. The small block Chev sports a much larger capacity of 383-cubes thanks to a Scat crank and rod combo that swings JE pistons inside the World Industries 4-bolt block. A Mellings oil

pump, Crow cam and custom sump complete the bottom end. A pair of alloy AFR 210 heads soon joined the party providing a platform for the Weiand blower intake, 6/71 pump and twin 750cfm Holley carbs to be mounted into place. After the Aeromotive fuel pump sends plenty of Premium unleaded fuel through the carbs and the MSD ignition lights the fire, a pair of custom-made headers (by Craig Pearce) dump the gases via a twin 3-inch exhaust system. The system was a big job, as Danny didn’t want the headers to go through the inner guards, so Craig had a big job ahead of him. On a moderate level of boost, the stretched small block pumps out an impressive 600hp.

Danny probably didn’t realise it at the time, but that purchase was going to turn into a major rebuild…eventually. 64

65

Getting the power through to the 3.5-geared nine-inch diff is a full-manual Powerglide transmission built by Burko Transmissions in Shepparton that is fronted with a 3500rpm TCE converter. Gear selections are taken care of via a Hurst Pro-Matic shifter. Whilst the attention was focussed on the Ute’s underside, Danny added a pair of King springs and Koni shocks to the HR front, whilst the rear now features reset leaf springs with Koni shocks. The steering has been updated with a rear-mount rack assembly that makes driving the Ute a much nicer experience. Like the steering, the braking system has been enhanced with HQ slotted discs and calipers while Commodore discs and calipers handle the rear braking power. Convo Pro wheels look awesome on any car, and that is proven here with 15x6 and 15x10 rims fitted to the appropriate ends – the rears sitting inside a mini-tubbed rear end.

The HR’s body wasn’t in too bad as far as the body work went. Still, plenty of hours were lavished onto the sheet metal to make sure it was going to be straight enough for the new colour. Danny’s previous HR Ute was this shade of blue usually found on a VT Commodore so it was a no brainer what colour Danny was going to lay onto the HR’s now prepped body. With the paint work completed, polished timber panels were laid into the one-time load area. 66

67

Inside, it’s a master class of old-school street machine style. The modified bench seat has been covered in a two-tone blue velour and vinyl – the latter flowing onto the door trims, dash pad and custom centre console. Retractable seat belts keep all three passengers safe, and from the driver’s position, Danny has the HR X2 dash in view (just behind the SASS steering wheel) as well as the AutoMeter gauges – a 5-inch tacho inside and a trio of smaller gauges mounted on the plenum outside. A&H Trim in Bendigo did a great job of bringing the old trim back to life.

On a moderate level of boost, the stretched small block pumps out an impressive 600hp.

The entire makeover from daily driver to weekend warrior took around ten years and more money than Danny could even bother adding up. There’s been a few lessons learned during the build period, the main one being ‘to wait until I had everything needed before starting the build process!’ Good advice for anyone looking at taking on a project. The HR’s future is pretty well mapped out. Danny explained, “I’m hoping to get it out and about to do some shows and cruises in it and to eventually get it down the drag strip to see what its capable of.” Bring it on…

BATHURST AUTOFEST_MT PANORAMA_BATHURST - MARCH 10-13 WORDS – PAUL BECK PICS – PAUL BECK / FLAMING RIM PRODUCTIONS

DRIVING FORCE Mt Panorama is regarded by many as the best motor racing circuit in the world, so why wouldn’t you want to run your tough street car there?

It comes as no surprise to see just how popular the Bathurst Autofest is. The opportunity to line-up against a mate on the famous track front straight in front of a massive crowd are what dreams are made of for so many hardcore street car owners. And when the pit area houses one of the largest burnout pads in the country and enough room for a massive show and shine, there’s no real negatives in being part of the Bathurst Autofest.

72

73

Being just a couple of hours west of Sydney, and offering those car owners from western NSW an event within an easy cruise, the Bathurst Autofest attracts a wide variety of cars, all eager to leave their mark on the mountain. It’s obvious that this event is more of a driving event over a show and shine. Sure, there’s still enough cool cars on hand to keep the show judges very busy, but I reckon that if you asked what was the main reason why you entered the Autofest in Bathurst, more often than not, you get the same answer - for the driving events. And for

that reason, Les and his team made the call early on, to expand the competition days to include both Thursday and Friday nights to cater for the massive influx of entrants wanting to send a bunch of tyres to the smoke gods. With the two added burnout comps, this year there was four groups of competitors, ranging from first timers in their daily drivers, to those big guns of the burnout scene, including the most well-known father and son team, Gary and Jake Myers who dragged not one, but two blown, injected Mustangs to the mountain!

Even from a rolling start, there was lots of tyresmoke, lots of sideways action and lots of smiles and cheering from the rooftop spectators!

74

75

Looking at the long line up of burnout competitors waiting for their shot at glory, it’s obvious that blower and LS sales had gone through the roof recently. From Hilux’s, to Commodore’s to H-series Holden’s and Torana’s and even a bloody Mini - the boosted LS was the weapon of choice for many. And then there’s the traditional blower brigade! It seems that most think the old saying is true - “You’re not known, unless you’re blown!” But before the burnouts started “officially”, there was the Grab-a-flag and Autokana to run in the same arena. Mind you, many drivers used these as a warm up to the burnout out comp anyway!

76

With the two added burnout comps, this year there was four groups of competitors, ranging from first timers in their daily drivers, to those big guns of the burnout scene...

77

But it’s not just on the burnout pad where the entrants get to flex their cars muscle. There’s plenty of on-track action happening all weekend on the famous main straight, including the Super Sprints and the heads-up Go-Whoa - both of which resulted win plenty of new black marks running more than half way up the strip! Even from a rolling start, there was lots of tyre-smoke, lots of sideways action and lots of smiles and cheering from the rooftop spectators! And when the action finished ‘out the front’ those on the rooftop just had to take a few dozen steps and they had a birds eye view of the burnout pad and surrounding area’s! It really is a great venue to watch any and all of the action!

This year, the main show in the burnout section was held from 5pm-10pm on the Saturday night - much of which was under lights, with the cooler conditions obviously helping some of the more wilder engines.

This year, the main show in the burnout section was held from 5pm-10pm on the Saturday night - much of which was under lights, with the cooler conditions obviously helping some of the more wilder engines. Come Sunday, it was all about the finals. Final show judging was taking place, along with the finals in all of the other driving events. At Midday, a large portion of the entrants filed out of the pit area for a slow-paced cruise round the mountain. For some, this was their first visit to Bathurst and unless you’ve experienced a drive around the track, you simply can’t fathom just how steep and narrows the track is in places. It really is a great part of the Autofest experience.

With the last set of tyres smoked for the event, and the trophies handed out to the deserving winners, another cracking Bathurst Autofest had come to an end.

80

81

With the last set of tyres smoked for the event, and the trophies handed out to the deserving winners, another cracking Bathurst Autofest had come to an end. As you’d expect, some entrants had to tow their cars home with damage done - some mechanical, and some panel/paint, but that’s just part of the game we play! Whilst there will always be the not-so-happy memories for some, the majority of people at the event had an awesome time, whether they were entrants or spectators. So, will the 2023 Bathurst Autofest follow the trend and sell out once again? I reckon so. If I were you, I’d be booking my spot in the driving events as soon as the entry forms become available. SOUL Revival

Take Ford’s ’37 Roadster, modernise it with more swoopy lines and fill it with high-tech gadgetry. Ray Crisp’s slammed, restyled ’37 Roadster hides all the mod-cons…

Ray Crisp

1937 Wild Rods Roadster Words / Pics - Paul Beck

84

85

Imported from the US as a body, chassis and a box full of parts, this Wild Rods Roadster was built at Oz Rods in Queensland for a customer who wanted a high-tech Hot Rod with a difference. Once finished, Ray bought the Roadster and proceeded to make it his own. Sometimes, the right car just falls into your lap, eliminating the years of work, lots of stress and without doubt, plenty of the folding stuff. When Ray found out this ’37 was on the market, he couldn’t help himself, he just had to make it his.

The fibreglass body also features electric door poppers, electric boot lid, side opening bonnet and removable hard top.

Once in NSW, Ray found there were a few things needed to comply with NSW rego rules. One by one, those issues were sorted and before too long, the ’37 had Conditional Rego plates attached – the front plate being mounted so that it can fold up under the front guard to allow the body to be slammed down low. The two-tone paint scheme and graphics were added at Oz-Rods, but after a slight accident with the passenger suicide door popping open on the freeway on the way to the Newcastle Street Rod Nats, Ray had some unscheduled repairs to make and sent the damaged ’37 off to Andy’s Restorations where the body was repaired and the lower section repainted - the colour slightly different to what it once was. The colour scheme suits the swoopy lines of the Wild Rods body perfectly. The fibreglass body also features electric door poppers, electric boot lid, side opening bonnet and removable hard top. The distinctive grille and headlight treatment complete the unique look from Wild Rods. 86

87

Sometimes, the right car just falls into your lap, eliminating the years of work, lots of stress and without doubt, plenty of the folding stuff. 88

Ray also had the interior restitched by Steve Maiolo at All Trim to match the paint scheme taking the exterior theme into the interior. Steve used a combination of Maroon and Black leather to cover the Camaro seats, moulded door trims and centre console. The same material was added to the boot area along with Mercedes black carpet. The black painted dash panel holds an array of Haneline gauges set into a trick billet surround, matching the IDIDIT steering column and Budnik steering wheel. The custom console not only holds the Lokar shifter, switches, speakers (for the Kenwood sound system) and air-suspension digital gauge, but also a host of billet buttons to operate the air-suspension, power windows, door and boot openers. Steve is well known for his superb craftmanship and Ray’s interior is a testament to his talents.

89

The driveline fitted is perfect for a cool rod that is meant to be driven. In fact, Ray could jump in his ’37 and drive it any distance with ease thanks to the standard-spec LS1 engine backed with a 4L60E, 4-speed auto box. The 9-inch diff houses highway-friendly 3.25-gears in the limited-slip centre. Not only is the driveline ultra-reliable, but its fuel efficient and user-friendly. The chassis that came from the US with the body has retained its left-hand drive configuration and relies on a Mustang II independent front-end and 4-link rear along with Air-Ride Shockwave suspension and a full complement of Wilwood 350mm discs and calipers (6-spot on the front and 4-spot on the rear) to help the ’37 steer, ride and brake like a late model car. The wheels of choice are 17x8” and 20x9.5” Billets wrapped in Goodyear Eagle rubber.

90

91

After spending two-years getting the car finished to his liking, Ray has taken the ’37 to around 45 shows and amassed no less than 50 awards along with a few big checks for winning car of the show! The plan is to cruise the car some more before parting company with it to finance a new project. Ray calls the car “Rosie” after the ACDC song “Whole Lotta Rosie”. Ray needs

92

to thank his wife Annette for allowing him to spend plenty of time and just as much money on “the other woman” in his life. He also wants to do a shout out to his son’s Daniel and Troy and his daughter Amy for helping out with the build to make it what it is today. Hopefully they’ll all put their hands up when the time comes to help out on the new project…

When Ray found out this ’37 was on the market, he couldn’t help himself, he just had to make it his.

James and Sarah Clay have a thing for tough cars, and thanks to Race Car Specialties, their Pro-Street ’67 Nova is one of the toughest!

James and Sarah Clay 1967 Chev Nova

Words - Paul Beck Pics - Race Car Specialties & James Clay 94

95

Some cars set the internet alight when they first appear, just like this Nova. I have been a fan of Race Car Specialties for a long time, and long before I jumped behind the wheel of the PSC ’62 Chev Bubbletop, I ran a feature on a full-tube, but still street-friendly, blown injected ’62 Chev coupe that came from the same company. Knowing what those guys are capable of building, I knew as soon as I saw the first pic of the Nova, I knew it was going to be something special.

As cool as this build is, it’s the blown mountain of horsepower that is the talking point of this Nova.

Before the new Candy Brandywine paint was added, the Nova was treated to all new underpinnings. In the US, there’s no rules and regulations about not being able to modify the factory chassis rails, so with that in mind, the original Chev chassis was binned to make way for the more impressive race car-spec, chrome-moly tube chassis that incorporates a strut front end, Strange coil-overs front and rear, along with brakes sporting the same brand. The diff is a severely narrowed 9-inch with a Strange centre-section using 4.11-gears. The chassis has been certified for 6.0 and rolls on highly polished Weld V-series wheels and appropriately size rubber. 96

97

Inside, it’s all business. In Australia, this would be a Pro-Mod car, but in the “Land of the Free”, it’s still classed as a street car, despite the mass of roll cage surround both James and Sarah when they are out ‘cruising’ the Nova. Along with the cage, the interior also sports a pair of Kirkey seats with RaceQuip harness belts, lots of powder coated tin on the floor, tubs and door trims that works in with some carbon fibre to complete the picture. A TCI shifter sits on top of the fabricated tunnel that flows into the carbon fibre dash. A digital RacePak dash unit has been mounted to the tube steering column. Popping open the trunk (ok bootlid for us Aussies) reveals more exposed tube, a big fuel cell with pumps, the red top Optima battery and the most unique hinge system I’ve seen.

Combined with the refurbished chrome bumper bars, polished grille and new lights, the colour absolutely pops...

98

99

After all of the fabrication work had been completed, the rolling Nova was taken directly to MPB Restorations was all of the imperfections were taken out of the Nova’s body and associated panels before laying down a coat or two of that mesmerising custom mix Candy Brandywine paint. Combined with the refurbished chrome bumper bars, polished grille and new lights, the colour absolutely pops, making quite the statement on its debut at the Detroit Autorama.

Inside, it’s all business. In Australia, this would be a Pro-Mod car, but in the “Land of the Free”, it’s still classed as a street car...

100

101

As cool as this build is, it’s the blown mountain of horsepower that is the talking point of this Nova. Built by Marksmen Engineering, the 548ci big-block Chev has all the right internals to deal with the stresses and strains being pushed through it by the BDS 8/71 blower and dual, Quick-Fuel 1050 Dominators carbs. Making around 1100hp on 110-octane

race fuel, the engine is also reliable enough for James and Sarah to cruise in when the mood arises. And whilst no one would disagree with the engine’s capabilities, the show judges will tell you it’s detailed like a seasoned show car! James is looking at swapping the carbs for some electronically-controlled fuel injection, but not just yet.

We’ll let James have the final word… “I intend to use this car for just about anything. I can drive it to any local car shows, or if I choose to, I can take it to the local track and go have some fun. It may look pretty, but the car was built to beat on and last!” That just proves the old saying, “You’ve got to drive ‘em!” 102

DETROIT y t i C k c o R

The annual Detroit Autorama is probably the most anticipated car show in America, if not the world! Why? Read on…

69th Detroit AutoramaW - March 4-6, 2022

WORDS – PAUL BECK / PICS - GREG ‘BEACH’ BALL

As home to the most prestigious award in the global custom car scene, the Ridler, the Detroit Autorama is the event where anyone and everyone attends to see the best of the best, never seen before, custom rides – in particular, the Great 8, of which the Ridler winner is chosen. The rules are strict though. To be a contender for the Great 8, your car has to be a brand-new build that has never been seen before. That includes at events, in magazines and definitely not on social media.

2022 RIDLER WINNER / GREAT 8 - RICK & PATTY BIRD – 1931 CHEV COUPE Candy paint covering a full-custom body! Twin-turbo 509ci. 104

105

Since the show kicked off in 1953, the Autorama has been the one show that those builders of high-end cars all strive to be a part of. And even if they don’t admit it, each of them would be harbouring a desire to have one of those Great 8 Flags inside their show displays. Of course, there can be only 8 and those 8 are always mind-blowing in their design, construction and impact. In 2022, this again was a true statement.

Since the show kicked off in 1953, the Autorama has been the one show that those builders of high-end cars all strive to be a part of.

GREAT 8 - JIM & RHONDA SAPPENFIELD – 1951 STUDEBAKER PICKUP A true custom built over 20-years. Slammed, chopped, widened and channelled.

GREAT 8 - DON & MARY DOCTOR – 1970 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA Pro-touring style with blown Gen 3 Hemi-power!

107

GREAT 8 - CHRISTOPHER WRIGHT – 2021 DEVIN Z ROADSTER A modern-day scratch-built tribute to the original 50’s Devin.

But it’s not just about the high-end, Ridler-spec cars. There’s so much more on display inside Detroit’s Huntington Place. There’s hundreds of cars on display in many area’s including the “Basement” where the traditional hot rods, customs and wild, one-off creations filled the floor space. For many, this is the only space that matters. If you’re into Patina paint, flathead engines, whitewalls and historical customs, this would be where you’d spend most of your time.

GREAT 8 - DON SNELL – ‘33 FORD ROADSTER Traditional styled with a780hp Fuel injected 520ci KAASE Boss 9.

108

GREAT 8 - KEVIN TIRPAK – 1970 DODGE CHALLENGER A Whipple-blown Gen 3 Hemi wrapped in Sub Lime coloured body.

109

The 2022 Autorama didn’t disappoint. The variety, quality and style of the Hot Rods, Customs, Lowriders, Race Cars and Street Machines on show ensured most people were happy after flowing through the doors in huge numbers. For Rick & Patty Bird, this years event will be one they will never forget, after their radical candy-coloured ’31 Chev Coupe topped the Great 8 to win the Ridler award amongst some highly regarded competition. I for one, can’t wait to see what’s on offer in 2023…

GREAT 8 - DALE BERNARD – 1950 OLDSMOBILE Old-school hot rod custom built over 15-years by the owner!

Of course, there can be only 8 and those 8 are always mindblowing in their design, construction and impact. In 2022, this again was a true statement. GREAT 8 - GLENN SEE – ‘36 PONTIAC TWO-DOOR SEDAN A rare body style featuring an 1100hp turbo LS.
