From the Desk FORGET INVESTING IN MULTIPLE HOMES, GOLD BARS OR RARE COMIC BOOKS – OLD CARS IS WHERE THE REAL MONEY IS…

Have you tried to buy an old car lately? Not even something with a big reputation like a GT Falcon or any model Monaro – try just a basic, entry level early Holden, Falcon, Chrysler or even Fiat? Cars that were worth nothing just 10 years ago are now commanding money that is bordering on insane. In a recent classified’s magazine, there was a ’71 Valiant Charger for sale complete with its triple carb six-pack in place. Now, these Charger’s went like stink in a straight line, but weren’t renowned for their cornering or braking capabilities. The price tag? $295,000! Directly under this was a 2019 Hellcat Challenger. 707hp supercharged Hemi, 8-speed auto, all the mod-cons and converted to right hand drive. It had a price tag of $195,000. In what world is the Charger worth a hundred grand more than a Hellcat Challenger? Then there was an A9X Torana four-door sporting a hefty price tag of more than half a million dollars! What??? $525,000 for a 308, 4-speed Torana sedan! Does anyone else find this disturbing? When you see a HQ Belmont powered by a 202 with a column auto for sale, you’d expect that a great example would be worth somewhere around $12-$15,000. Nope. Try $48,500! But it did have weather shields, venetian blinds and a sunvisor too! With older cars asking these sorts of prices, there’s no wonder the next generation of car guys and girls are buying current model Commodores, Hyundai’s and the like. Can you imagine an 18-year old going to the Bank and asking for a $100,000 loan to buy a replica ’71 GT Falcon? The bank manager would laugh in your face. But ask the same question for an up-spec Commodore and they couldn’t get you the money quick enough. This is why there are so many Commodores and other plastic bumper cars at events like Powercruise, Autofest and Summernats. It may not be their first choice of car, but when the bank doesn’t see the value in older cars, you’ll need either a rich Daddy or relative to finance any old car purchase or be resigned to the fact that you’ll only ever drive a later model car. And really, that’s not necessarily a bad thing with so many safety features built in, they will certainly help reduce the death toll on our roads. But if you modify even the smallest component, you’re going to be in a world of pain if caught out by the Authorities. So, if you’re looking to increase your wealth dramatically, ditch any ideas of doing anything considered normal and start looking for some old steel cars at the right money to store away for resale. You may just find the right car for yourself too and the right price. Of course, you can gamble weekly, hoping to get the balls to drop into the right sequence. Good luck with that. Enjoy this issue of Killer…wait, Performance Street Car. I’ll get used to it eventually! See you on the street…

COVID STRIKES AGAIN - SPRINGNATS POSTPONED TO NOV 26-28

Just as we were preparing to close down the computers for Christmas, news came through that the Springnats set for the long weekend of January, had been cancelled. Due to the ongoing complications surrounding the Covid-19 situation and the way the Victorian Government are handling it, Les and his team had no choice but to postpone the event back to the original November date. If you’ve entered the Jan event, your entry will just transfer across to the November event. I would suggest rebooking your accomodation now, as typically, the Springnats in November is a huge event and places to stay fill up very quickly. WELCOME BACK PSC!

Hi Paul, You’ve made my day with the news that Killer Rides is changing its name to Performance Street Car! Sure, I enjoy Killer Rides each month, but Performance Street Car was my favourite magazine and it will be great to have the brand back. Bring on Jan 2021! Dylan J Via Email Hi Paul, Hell yeah, Performance Street Car is coming back! Three words – Best. Magazine. Ever! Nathan K via Messenger Hey Paul, Killer Rides is a great title for a magazine, but let’s face it, Performance Street Car is iconic! I think the name change will do wonders for the magazine and will see your reputation head skywards. Great move Paul, can’t wait for the new Issue. Aaron D via Email G’day Paul, I always enjoy your editorial each month, but this Issues (#31) was by far the best yet – what great news! I have every issue of Performance Street Car, which to me (and many others) was the tough car bible. Whilst I applaud the move, the name Killer Rides was awesome too! Some people just think too much into things. All the best for 2021 and beyond! Tim R Via Email Thanks everyone. These are just a fraction of the good wishes I received following the news the Killer Rides is to become Performance Street Car. Like you all, PSC was my favourite magazine and I am so happy to be able to bring the title back. There will be some new additions (check out this Issue for the Radial Top Ten Lists and Full Pit Access section) and the line-up of cars will remain, well, Killer! 2021 has kicked off with a massive bang! 18

FALCON TOUGH!

Hi Paul, Thanks for yet another great issue of Killer Rides. Steve Azzopardi’s XB is one of the toughest street cars I have ever seen. The style, attitude and quality of the build is amazing and it’s great to see Steve using it to its full potential. For me, that’s your Killer Ride of the Year! Simon G via Email G’day Simon, I agree. Steve’s XB is proof that the pro-street style will never go out of fashion. Tough cars are here to stay and you’ll see them featured here. I’ll note down your vote for the XB. Cheers, Paul.

LATE MODEL MUMBO

Hi Paul, Thanks so much for featuring the FGX Falcon in Killer Rides. I have been a big fan of the Barra engine package for some time and it was great to see these boys get some recognition for their efforts in raising the bar in performance Ford six-pack engines. Hope to see many more tough late-model Falcon’s featured! Charlie P via Messenger Hi Charlie, The guys at Empire Mechanical are certainly letting their builds do the talking on the track. It’s only a matter of when, not if, they get that elusive 7-second pass. And yes, we have more turbo Barra-powered features coming soon. Regards, Paul.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

LATE MODEL

Make Over

An accident in the family SRT8 Jeep was the catalyst for the high-tech make-over on Damien Galea’s VC Valiant.

FULL RESPRAY IN ORIGINAL GREEN

MINITUBBED REAR END 9-INCH DIFF RELOCATED LEAF SPRINGS 20

With the grinder still warm from removing the old trans tunnel, Damien cut and stretched the rear wheel tubs to accommodate the move to bigger, 15x10-inch Weld wheels and more impressive 295-tyres. With a shed full of cool cars, including a slammed, supercharged VW Beetle, a tough XE Falcon and a turbocharged HSV Clubsport, Damien has no loyalty to any particular brand or make. He does though, have a passion for performance cars. When his wife and daughter were involved in the accident in the Jeep (both are fine by the way), he decided to purchase the wreck from Shannons and set about dropping that 6.4-litre Hemi into an early Valiant. Not having much to do with Chryslers in the past, Damien purchased a roller VC sedan that was in reasonable condition and sat on a set of Convo Pro wheels.

21

In hindsight, the VC wasn’t the best choice of car to do this conversion on. Damien soon found out that this model has an offset transmission tunnel which meant that when the new Hemi was dropped in, the engine sat off centre making it impossible to use in that position. The engine bay is quite small too, so the plan to use his P1SC Procharger that he had put aside for the Jeep, was never going to fit without major modifications. The only answer to this problem was to remove the tunnel completely, and fitting a new fabricated tunnel that is centred in the car. Likewise, the offset rear end was now of no use, so the decision was made to add a much stronger 9-inch diff into the build – a

wise move seeing that the 6.4 Hemi was still going to score some forced induction in the form of a single, Precision 7675 turbocharger. The engine will also be stripped down and rebuilt using Manley H-beam conrods and forged Ross pistons so that when the boost comes on song, the engine doesn’t grenade. The engine will keep its air-conditioning – after all, this is destined to be a regular, street driven cruiser. There’s a water to air intercooler barrel placed behind the front bumper out of sight. There were plans to use the 8-speed auto from the Jeep, but that has been ditched in favour of a stronger 727 auto fronted with a Coan transbrake and suitable converter.

If all goes to plan, Damien wants the VC to be finished for the long haul to Chryslers on the Murray.

22

With the grinder still warm from removing the old trans tunnel, Damien cut and stretched the rear wheel tubs to accommodate the move to bigger, 15x10-inch Weld wheels and more impressive 295-tyres. To make them fit right, the leaf springs were relocated. Once the Valiant comes back from paint and is rolling again, Damien will send it to the Gazzard Bros shop to have them weave their magic on the rear end. The original front end has been retained along with power rack and pinions steering. The matching black-centred Weld wheels on the front are considerably narrower for that pro-street feel. 23

The body and paint were in pretty good shape when Damien purchased it. Though he does admit that the chips in the paint are enough to warrant a full respray in the original green paint. Inside, the Valiant’s interior space is getting a completely new interior, using the factory VC V8 bucket seats as the basis.

By the time you read this, the Valiant should be sporting a shiny new coat of paint and the engine should be back on its mounts awaiting the computer system to be sorted. Then it will be a case of finalising the interior retrim and sorting out the little things that always pop up in a built like this. If all goes to plan, Damien wants the VC to be finished for the long haul to Chryslers on the Murray. And now that the event has been put back a few months, that gives him an extended time frame to work with. When completed, the VC will look right at home amongst the Holden’s, Ford’s and VW’s currently in the garage… 24

JASON HOCTORS - FORD CORTINA’S WORDS / PICS / VIDEO - PAUL BECK

T C A E L B U DO

Jason Hoctor’s antic’s in his WINDSOR Cortina are legendary, but with that car now set aside for off-street duties only, he needed a street car too.

26

27

In the early days of such events as the Easternats, Summernats and Springnats, Jason’s WINDSOR Cortina was a regular. Most of the time, Jason would be taking the tough V8 to the limits, whether it was frying a set of tyres or laying down some sub-10-sec passes at the track. Whatever the occasion, Jason would be in amongst it putting on a show in spectacular fashion. He quickly gained a reputation as being one of those wild guys and WINDSOR became one of those iconic cars that everyone knew about. It remains that way to this day. Jason originally built the Cortina back in 1992, after purchasing the car at 17. Being a panel man by trade, he took to the small Ford’s body and paint relieving the sheet metal of all defects including years of neglect from owners who had probably driven by feel. According to Jason, the body was f&*ked! After spending countless hours getting the body sorted, Jason enlisted

28

the help of mate Lorrie Tess to lay on a coat of PPG Teal Glow. The paint covers an essentially stock body with the exception of the fibreglass bonnet and scoop, giving the Cortina a much nastier demeanour. Sticking your head in any window reveals an interior that is Pro-Street in its purest form. There’s nothing that doesn’t serve a purpose. A full-cage encompasses the interior space. The shapeless factory front seats have been replaced with Scheel items flanked with Simpson harness belts with a MOMO steering wheel, B&M Pro-Stick shifter and parachute release handle within easy reach once Jason is strapped into place. The dash now houses a full complement of AutoMeter gauges, with the MSD/ICE ignition system mounted to the trans tunnel. The back seat is long gone, made redundant by the wheel tubs. Grey velour now covers the feats and door trims in contrast to the body colour.

Sticking your head in any window reveals an interior that is Pro-Street in its purest form.

29

The small block Ford sports big block proportions, running out at 454 cubic inches. Jason had Glen Wells build the big cube engine, fitting the Dart block with a Callies Magnum crank, Oliver rods, custom JE pistons and custom TOCA cam working in with Crower lifters. A custom High Energy sump finishes off the tough bottom end. The Yates C3 alloy heads have been modified by TOCA Performance and fitted with titanium valves wrapped in PSI springs. With the heads bolted in place, the gap between them is filled with a CID intake (ported by TOCA) holding a single 1350cfm Ray Edwards carb. On a strict diet of R00 16 / Methanol, the small block punched out an impressive 911hp. It sounds even more impressive – check out the video. A tough engine needs a tough driveline to back it up, so Jason had Ray Caruana build a Powerglide

30

using one of hid custom bellhousings to mate it to the Ford engine. Along with the obviously strong internals, the ‘glide uses a 7000rpm (yes you read that right) TCE converter. A Competition sheet metal diff housing holds 31-spline axles and a 4.2-geared centre. The underside improvements are all about going fast in a straight line. Up front there’s 90/10 Koni coil over shocks and Strange discs and calipers. The wheels are 15x3.5-inch Weld Magnum. Down the back, there’s a ladder bar setup with Koni coil overs and drum brakes. 15x10inch Max Dumsey rims rolling on M/T slicks. As you can see, WINDSOR is a purpose-built race car now, running a best time of 8.80-sec’s down the quarter. Future plans call for a big effort to better that ET and then to pass the car down to his boys to enjoy. Car’s like WINDSOR stay in the family forever.

Whilst the blue car is anything but a street car, the same can’t be said for the orange Cortina. Built purely for Jason to use on the street with his family on board...

31

Whilst the blue car is anything but a street car, the same can’t be said for the orange Cortina. Built purely for Jason to use on the street with his family on board, Jason found the standard car in Sunbury in 2018 and spent 12 months creating a streetable monster. Whilst still a tough, prostreet styled car, Jason wanted to keep this car relatively streetable in both its appearance and performance. Like the blue car, this one needed a full resto on the body work, and just like the other car, Jason wanted to keep the Cortina essentially how the Ford engineers had signed off on. And just like WINDSOR, the only change made to the orange cars body has been to the bonnet, where a piece of metal was taken out for the engine to hang through. Jason also mini-tubbed the rear and smoothed out the body before he fired up the compressor and laid on the Debeer Orange colour. Black accents on the bumpers, grille, window surrounds and stripes all add to the tough street car appeal. As do the black and polished Weld V-series rims – the rears using Max Dumsey hoops with bead-locks designed by Jason.

Whilst still a tough, pro street styled car, Jason wanted to keep this car streetable in both its appearance and performance. 32

Because this Cortina is a regular streeter, Jason didn’t go too wild with the Windsor small block providing the power. Once again, Glen Wells got the nod to build the engine. A Scat crank and rod combo with custom JE pistons were slotted into the Dart block giving a cubic capacity of 363-cubes. A suitable Comp Cams roller cam and lifter kit completes the short engine. AFR alloy heads soon joined the party after being kitted out with stainless valves and PSI springs. Deciding that two carbs are the way to go on the street, Jason topped the engine with twin 750HP carbs mounted to a Hogan’s sheet-metal tunnel ram intake. Finished on black, the engine is highlighted by a pair of rocker covers that have been dipped for an unusual effect. Not only did Jason piece the engine together, he also fabricated the headers and dual exhaust system. With the MSD 6AL2 ignition firing the stout small block into life, and with 98-octane fuel running through it, the small block made a credible 630hp – more than enough to get you into trouble on the street! Fred at Protrans built-up a trans-braked C4 auto to handle the power getting shoved through it, a 6200rpm TCE converter handling the job at hand with ease. The guys at Diff Co built the 9-inch diff using a Strange Engineering housing and 35-spline axles. Apart from the adjustable chrome-moly arms and the UPC discs and caliper up front, the steering and suspension are as per factory specs. 33

Inside, it’s much more about street than pro-street! The unusual patterned seats are stock Ford and complement the white vinyl taking Jason and the family back in time to 1976 whenever they are out cruising the Cortina. A stealth Pro-Ratchet shifter has been adapted to the centre console and a Racepack dash sits where the original instruments once did. The orange car has turned out just how Jason had envisaged and there’s nothing he would change if he had to do it again. For now, the orange Cortina is scheduled for plenty of street use. Whilst it would be capable of running a low 10, maybe high 9-second ET, that’s not what this one was built for and when Jason feels the urge to hit the track, he only needs to uncover WINDSOR, fill the fluids and make it happen. Until then. It’s time to create a reputation for the orange car…

34

BUILDING A COLLECTION

With these two Cortina’s taking up most of his time at the moment, Jason is fair from finished. There’s another on the go, this time with a high-powered, turbo Barra 6-pack for power and also a stock version with less than 40,000klms on the speedo. Yep, that’s right – a stocker that’s like new! Check it out! And before you ask, no, Jason won’t be chopping this one up. It’s going to stay as is…

CRUISIN’ FOR

LYGON STREET BREAKFAST & TOY RUN LYGON STREET, CARLTON - SUNDAY 13TH DEC 2020 WORDS / PICS – PAUL BECK

Kids

Melbourne’s most famous stretch of inner-city street rumbled to the sound of hundreds of slick street cars as the owners came together for breakfast and to donate toys for those in need.

38

It’s common knowledge that Melbournians will go to the opening of a toilet door in droves, so it was no surprise to see so many cars and people filling Lygon Street for such a great cause. Organised by Rob Bellio and the team at Kingpin Kuztums, the breakfast cruise has become one of the most anticipated events on the calendar. With lots of food outlets lining both sides of the street, and plenty of cars to admire, the event is not just fun for the entrants, with lots of people heading out onto the street to check out the proceedings.

After months of events being cancelled, there was plenty of hype surrounding the Lygon Street Toy Run.

39

After months of events being cancelled, there was plenty of hype surrounding the Lygon Street Toy Run. Rob had been in constant communications with those who make the rules and took on board everything that had to offer. With these people happy, the event officially got the nod to proceed. With that news, Rob started promoting the event to anyone and everyone. All eyes were on the weather forecast with a week to go, and the closer it got to the day, the more it looked like Melbourne was going to be bathed in complete sunshine, just the thing to bring all that chrome-plated, candy-coloured cars out early on a Sunday morning.

Officially set to kick off at 7am, there were many car owners that got their parking spot much earlier so there was no chance that they would miss out on a good spot close to where the action takes place. Mind you, with so many cars cruising both sides of the iconic road, I don’t think there’s a bad spot to be in. Most though wanted to hang around the park area where the Salvation Army had set up their truck to collect the amazing number of toys that were donated by the car owners to be distributed to those kids that would be doing it very tough come Christmas day. Well done guys and girls, your generosity was going to make a huge difference to lots of families‌

40

41

No matter where I pointed my camera, either down Lygon Street or down any of the many side streets, there were an abundance of street machines, muscle cars, hot rods, resto’s and customs - all gleaming in the morning sun. In and amongst the throngs of cool rides were groups of car owners all checking out each others cars, watching the cruising take place and generally having a great time. After being in isolation for so long, everyone made the most of the outdoors, socialising and playing cars.

The Lygon Street Breakfast & Toy Run not only got plenty of support from car enthusiasts, but also got the thumbs up from the Melbourne City Council and Victorian Police including the Highway Patrol.

42

43

The Lygon Street Breakfast & Toy Run not only got plenty of support from car enthusiasts, but also got the thumbs up from the Melbourne City Council and Victorian Police including the Highway Patrol. Events like this go a long way to bridging he gap between modified car owners and the Police. Thankfully, everyone behaved themselves, bringing smiles all round from the boys and girls in blue.

Most though wanted to hang around the park area where the Salvation Army had set up their truck to collect the amazing number of toys that were donated by the car owners...

44

45

WIN THIS 1970 There’s no denying that the 4th running of this event on Lygon Street was the biggest an best yet. I have no doubt that everyone was hanging to get there cars out and about again after so many months in isolation. NICK GRGICH - 1976 TORANA HATCH WORDS / PICS / VIDEO - PAUL BECK

t e e r t S k c Ba R E S I U R B In a car scene that is dealing more and more with technology, it’s refreshing to see a build that is all about raw horsepower in a bad-ass Torana Hatchback…

50

51

After swapping a VT Clubsport for a well-worn Torana hatchback, Nick Grgich put his plans in place to build himself one bad-to-the-bone tough street car. At this early stage, many people would be considering filling the engine bay with a LS-based engine relying on a hightech induction system to supply fuel through the engine. Whilst that is a great idea, our man Nick wanted to go old school - back to a time where bigger was definitely better. In regards to engine capacity, Nick wanted to go bigger than big, opting for a 632-inch big block Chev.

When Nick swapped the keys of the Clubsport for the Torana, he got one of the toughest body shape’s Holden had ever produced.

Bluey at M&A Mechanical in Queensland is well known in the tough car scene for building and maintaining some of the toughest street and strip engines around. For Nick, Bluey’s reputation was all he needed to have him build the fattest of fat block Chevs. Starting with a Big M Dart block, Bluey got to work piecing the bottom end together using a Callies crank and I-beam rods, together with SRP pistons, to complete the tough as nails rotating system. Bluey also added the custom cam and Jesel lifters. A Moroso sump capped off the lower part of the engine. A pair of modified Pro-1 Dart heads soon joined the block with a Profiler intake manifold filling the gap between the heads. Getting ample amounts of 98-0ctane pump fuel into the engine is left up to a single, 1150 Dominator carb. When the MSD ignition fires the 632 into life, the ignited fuel is sent out via the 2.5-inch, 4-into-1 headers that unwind into a 3.5-inch dual system. By now, you’re no doubt wondering about the power output, right? Let’s just say the aspirated big block makes in excess of 1000hp. And that’s road friendly, reliable horsepower… 52

53

Backing the potent big block is a Powerglide built by Sash to handle the gobs of torque the 632 pushes through it. With tough internals and a 4500 converter, the 2-speed box is more than up to the task of taking anything the engine can dish out. As you’d expect, there’s a nine-inch diff out the back with 3.5-gears and 35-spline axles. A three-inch tailshaft connects the gearbox and diff. There’s not many changes made to the Torana’s underside other than the upgrading to Pedders springs and shocks at each corner, and a braking improvement with a switch to HQ discs on the nose and Ford drums on the rear. A Wilwood master-cylinder controls the new braking system. The wheels of choice are black-rimmed Weld wheels measuring 15x9, and 17x5-inches for that undeniable pro-street look.

Let’s just say the aspirated big block makes in excess of 1000hp. And that’s road friendly, reliable horsepower…

54

55

When Nick swapped the keys of the Clubsport for the Torana, he got one of the toughest body shape’s Holden had ever produced. However, you wouldn’t quite call it pristine. In fact, average wouldn’t really be accurate either. Maybe poor is a better description. Whichever way you look at it, Nick is more than happy with the done deal, knowing full well, that when finished, his hatchback was going to look killer. Nick decided to pay homage to the Holden designers, keeping the Hatchback’s body in the same shape it was designed to be back in 1976, with the exception of the reverse cowl scoop. After countless hours were spent relieving the body of the many hits, ripples and defects collected along the way.

Once happy the body was straight enough, the body was handed over to Danny at Custom Body Works to lay on the colour. Nick knew from the outset the Torana was always going to be black. After all, tough cars always look better in black, right? The all-black theme carries through to the interior, where the standard seats and door trims were recovered in their original style thanks to Koda at Just Upholstery. Whilst the trim returns to how things were in 1976, the same can’t be said for the dash. Now fitted with AutoMeter gauges, the dash reflects on the pro-street styling Nick was after, as does the TCI Outlaw shifter. The interior space is the perfect mix of street and strip.

Now fitted with AutoMeter gauges, the dash reflects on the pro-street styling Nick was after...

56

57

Nick has invested more than two years and plenty of the folding stuff in the build of the Torana, and now that it’s finished, he’s ready to hit the blacktop as often as he can. So, what does the future hold for this hot Hatch? Nick has no plans of selling it, instead, he went through the build process so that one day he can hand the keys over to his son. And when that day comes, he can show all of his mates, just who owns the toughest car around…

THANKS TO: My family for their patience. Danny from Custom Body Works for the paint. Bluey at M&A Mechanical for the tough big block build. Sash for the gearbox. Most of all, big thanks to the boys at Gas Racing for putting the car together. 58

Dubbed the biggest and baddest Doorslammer event in the US, the 16th running of the Street Car Super Nationals at Las Vegas was three full days of high-horsepower action… The Street Car Super Nationals held at the Strip in Las Vegas, has a huge reputation amongst Doorslammer racers as being the ‘bucket list’ event. It’s the one event that you just have to do at least once in your lifetime. The event attracts racers from all over the world to compete at the November race, all vying to take home the big payouts and of course, the bragging rights for the win. Featuring big fields in all brackets, the racing is nothing short of spectacular in the qualifying

rounds as racers take their cars to their absolute limits to grab one of the two spots in the finals. With around 550 cars entered, the 2020 event, stayed constant with previous event numbers, even though there was some Covid-19 rules and regulations put in place by the State of Nevada. Most people wore masks and the social distancing was evident in the stands. By abiding by these rules, the punters that turned up in force were treated to plenty of high-octane action.

61

The quality and variety of the race cars on offer was simply mind-blowing. From the full-tilt Pro-Mod’s to the X275, 10.5 and Limited 235, the standard of the cars lining up to race has gone up a level as drivers present their cars gleaming as best they can. Standing out in a crowd is what it’s all about, and when you do that, you may just attract the attention of a potential sponsor – something all hardcore racers strive to achieve.

Of the four lanes on offer, two were prepped for slicks whilst the other two were prepped for those guys choosing to race on radial tyres.

Right from the outset, the tracks surface was prepared to perfection. Of the four lanes on offer, two were prepped for slicks whilst the other two were prepped for those guys choosing to race on radial tyres. Kurt Johnson and his team obviously did a great job with plenty of sky-high wheel-stands and low ET’s happening during the course of the four-day meet. Come Friday and the surface got even better with the cooler weather on offer. Saturday once again saw brilliant track conditions and racers in each bracket took advantage of the prep and although there were some upset eliminations, other drivers continued to run personal bests.

73

Whoever it was that headed the design team at Ford on the Capri project obviously had highoctane blood running through his veins. How else can you explain such a small car having an engine bay that can accommodate any production motor available? From the time that Bob Pinnell first dropped a Windsor small block into his street Capri and got it legally registered, we’ve seen the

humble small Ford coupe powered by everything including Clevo’s, Chev’s (both small and big block) and more lately, the turbo Barra 6-pack. In each occasion, there’s been little, if any, modifications to the engine bay to house the desired engine. That alone makes them a target for power-hungry car crafters wanting a tough street and strip car. People like our man Gerard Mifsud.

The Capri has been finished for a while now, and has had plenty of miles added to the speedo – something that Gerard plans to keep doing regularly.

74

Gerard is no stranger to tough Fords, with a pristine XYGT Falcon tucked away and a new pro-street Falcon Ute on the build, he a blue-oval man to the core. Whilst the GT gets used every now and then, it’s the Capri that see’s the most action – driven to car meets and events every chance he gets. I first took notice of the GAS69 Capri at last year’s Bathurst Autofest, where Gerard had the Capri cranking hard all weekend taking part in every driving event

held on the main straight. The colour first got my attention, as its very rare to see a modified Capri coated in Yellow Ochre. The paint combined with the obvious pro-street styling certainly has its appeal too – and not just from me, as I found it hard to get a good clear pic of the Capri from the big gathering of people that was surrounding it on the rare occasion it was parked in the pit area and not out on the main straight flexing its muscle. 75

Apart from the old-school Hornet scoop, the body pretty much appears to be as the factory had intended, but that’s not necessarily the case. The bonnet also scored GT Falcon bonnet latches to ensure that when Gerard jumps on the go pedal and the Capri tries to twist itself inside out, the bonnet won’t wrap itself along the windscreen and roof. Gerard was also quick to point out that he was never really a fan of seeing the lower part of the radiator protruding from the stone tray in Capri’s that have had a V8 jammed into them, so to combat that look, there’s now slots cut into the panel to allow more airflow into the cooling system. And yes, it works a treat, even in the dreaded Sydney traffic! The black stripes with its ‘347’ added to them not only break up the body colour it gives the game away as to what is nestled under that scoop.

Built by John Koolbanis at Unique Performance in Windsor, the 302-cube small block has been taken out to 347ci with the addition of a stroker crank and rod combo. The block also scoring a host of premium parts in the process to form the basis for one tough street engine. Externally, there’s a CSR electric water pump added to replace the old mechanical unit. With the bottom end sorted, John added a pair of massaged Edelbrock Victor Junior alloy heads that has the matching intake manifold bolted down in between. Remembering that the end goal was for a street driven car, the stroked Windsor has a single Demon carb and Wilson spacer added to supply ample amounts of high-octane fuel into the belly of the Windsor for the MSD 6AL-2 ignition system to ignite. Moroso sheet-metal rocker covers and a K&N air filter complete the long motor. The custom headers unwind in time to flow through a dual exhaust system that gets the job done without attracting the wrong attention for excess noise. Gerard was keeping his power figures close to his chest, but we all know and half-decent small block in a lightweight Capri is going to be a handful – and this engine package is much more than just decent! 76

77

The power runs through a modified C4 auto trans that is kitted out with the right gear to cope with the new found power and relies on a big converter to get the Capri moving hard off the line. Gear selections happen via a B&M Quicksilver shifter. Naturally, down the back is a tough, narrowed nine inch diff. The wheels of choice are pro-street favourites – Centerline Convo-Pro measuring 15x8-icnhes on the rear and a narrow 5-inches up front. The rears have been fitted with 275 tyres necessitating a mini-tub job. The underside of the Capri is fairly basic in regards to suspension mods, bit it has seen an upgrade to four-wheeldisc brakes to satisfy the engineer for rego.

Gerard is no stranger to tough Fords, with a pristine XYGT Falcon tucked away and a new pro-street Falcon Ute on the build. Inside, it’s tough street car image is carried on with the factory gauge cluster being given the flick to make room for the alloy facia that now plays host to AutoMeter gauges and an array of switches that operate all of the necessary functions. Being a true street car, Gerard didn’t want to add a roll cage, preferring to keep the Capri as user friendly as possible. Unfortunately, that limits his chance of seeing the Capri’s potential down the quarter mile. But I guess that’s more suited to the new project that’s happening at the moment. The factory seats have been retrimmed in black vinyl and material and the original door trims are retained, as is the steering wheel. The MSD box is also mounted under the dash to the tunnel for easy access if needed. The interior is functional, but is still comfy when out cruising with the boys. 78

The Capri has been finished for a while now, and has had plenty of miles added to the speedo – something that Gerard plans to keep doing regularly. And even though he is engrossed in the new build, he hasn’t ruled out some changes to the Capri to keep it fresh. Personally, I don’t think the oldschool pro-street look will ever be out of trend, but Gerard is contemplating a switch to a reverse cowl and maybe even a change of wheels. Stay tuned…

GONE IN John Willard spent three years of weekends constructing his angry Anglia. All the while, he had one goal in mind – to beat the Pom’s to that elusive 6-second pass! In the UK, the Outlaw Anglia class is massive. At any track meeting, it’s not uncommon to see up to 40 Anglia’s ready to go head to head over the quarter. To date, not one driver in the UK has managed to drop into the six-second zone, prompting John to get his Anglia on track sooner rather than later to own the bragging rights. John’s interest in tough Anglia’s started

6

SECONDS

with his previous drag-spec Hot Rod Anglia that was tubbed and sported a big block Chev topped with staggered injection before being swapped over to a blower and hat for street use. The previous Anglia was (and still is) tough as hell. John owned that car for a long time, but parted company with it, leaving the space to build the new Pro-Mod styled car.

JOHN WILLARD - 1948 ANGLIA WORDS / PICS - PAUL BECK RACE PICS - GRANT STEPHENS 82

83

Being the owner of Flat-Out Services, a chassis shop constructing all kinds of tough street and strip cars, John possess the skills to tackle the fabrication of the new car inhouse – saving lots of time and money. But before any tube could be bent to start on the chassis and cage, John needed the body. He found exactly what he wanted in Scotland and promptly did the deal with Colin Millar who crated up the fibreglass body before sending it to Australia. Once it landed, John worked out how he needed the body to be shaped and called in Stephen Busch to help him modify it. Thinking ahead, they boys grafted the front clip to the cowl panel to allow easy access to spark plugs and rocker covers at the track. The front clip also had the wheel opening moved forward and made smaller.

While working on the front end, reliefs were cut into the guards for the exhausts to poke through and a removable panel was created for the starter to attach. Moving to the rear section of the body, the wheel arches have been modified for larger slicks and there’s air relief flaps added to the boot area. The Lexan windows are all-but flush mounted to the body too. Once the now mostly carbon fibre body was sorted, Concept Paints were called into mix up the colour and lay on a few coats of bright Ford Lemans red. Those cool decals adorning the paint are the handiwork of Colin Hardy in the United Kingdom. The large rear wing was designed and fabricated by John inhouse and is fully adjustable. Tied into the chrome-moly tube chassis and cage, the wing also mounts the dual parachute.

Making around 1700hp at the moment, the Hemi features a 14/71 Littlefield hi-helix blower with an oh-so-cool Enderle ‘Barn Door’ injector John spent hundreds of hours constructing the Anglia’s tube chassis and roll cage that form the basis for the body to mount to. The mass of tube used in the frame’s construction forms a cocoon around John when in the driver’s position, but also offers mounting points for the chromemoly sheet-metal diff housing, 4-link and Stilleto rack and pinion steering. Hypercoil springs are used on each corner working with Strange struts on the front and JRI 4-way shocks with air-lock on the rear. The entire braking system wears the Strange brand on the master cylinder, four discs, single piston front calipers and 4-piston rear calipers. Hiding all the hard work and keeping the chassis off the ground are 15x3.5-inch and 16x16-inch Weld Alumastars – the rears also scoring bead locks and billet solid centres courtesy of Peter Mitcherson Engineering. 84

85

The cabin area is focussed solely on getting the job done safely and in the quickest possible time. Carbon fibre is used extensively throughout the interior for its strength and lightweight and you’ll find the tubs, seat and other panels made from it. An all-important fire-system takes up the space where a passenger would normally be and there’s just the right number of switches, electronics and buttons included in the interior for John to fly down the quarter mile in under 7-seconds at a time in complete safety. Yeah, it’s a tight space, but it’s not like you’re driving across Sydney strapped into the driver’s seat! The heart of any tough drag car is of course the engine and in John’s Anglia, that’s one hell of an engine. Yep, it’s a Hemi! But not just

any old Hemi, this tiny Anglia has a 451ci BAE Hemi that was built by fellow racer and great mate Brett Gillespie. Making around 1700hp at the moment, the Hemi features a 14/71 Littlefield hi-helix blower with an oh-so-cool Enderle ‘Barn Door’ injector, Brad-5 heads, a Promag-44 and cool 3-inch stainless steel Zoomie headers. Inside its all top shelf gear that should make well in excess of 2000hp once the boys get on top of the race tune. Backing the potent Hemi is a 3-speed Lencodrive with a Dominator converter and air shifter. The power passes through a chrome-moly tailshaft to the very narrow rear-end fitted with a Strange 4.3-geared Ultra centre, floaters and Strange 40-spline axles. Drivelines don’t come much tougher…

The cabin area is focussed solely on getting the job done safely and in the quickest possible time.

86

87

So, after a long build period, the Anglia was ready to go. But then the damn Coronavirus showed its full force by shutting down countries at will, and on top of that, John suffered a major back problem putting him out of action for a few months, affectively shelving any plans of giving the Anglia a blast. That was until Saturday December 5th when restrictions were lifted enough for a club track day at Sydney Dragway. The time had finally come… With rain forecast on the day, John and his team were itching to get the Anglia on track and managed to get a couple of low 7-second passes laid down. With everything on the car doing exactly what it should do during each pass, Brett upped the tune and prepared himself for a full pass at full noise. Bang, 6.93@201mph! Mission accomplished! Can you hear that? That’s the sound of 40-odd Anglia racers in the UK crying into their warm beer! To say John and the team were ecstatic is a gross understatement. Getting the Anglia onto the track has been a battle in itself, but to come away from the meet owning the bragging rights to having the quickest Anglia in the world is a huge achievement.

John spent hundreds of hours constructing the Anglia’s tube chassis and roll cage that form the basis for the body to mount to.

88

89

So now that John has achieved his goal, what’s next? More passes at Sydney Dragway where they will continue to develop the chassis and tune to get the Anglia running at its absolute best and then if everything falls into place and all the stars align, John would like to ship the little red Anglia to the UK to show those competing in the Outlaw Anglia just how we do it down under and also to take the record officially on their track, and on their terms. Stay tuned…

Yep, it’s a Hemi! But not just any old Hemi, this tiny Anglia has a 451ci BAE Hemi that was built by fellow racer and great mate Brett Gillespie.

RACE YOUR MATE AT MT PANORAMA!

Have you ever wanted to drag race along Pit Straight at Mt Panorama, Bathurst? Well, at the upcoming Bathurst Autofest, that’s just one of the many things you’ll be able to take part in. The 10th Bathurst Autofest is on March 5th to 7th and entries are now open. Check out www.autofest.com.au for details.

BEST ET & MPH: 4.32@177mph (1/8 mile @ Willowbank Raceway) MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN RACING: With this car it would have to be sitting in the staging lanes at Willowbank on a test day before Kenda when my tuner Kon looked at me after shutting the laptop, smiled and said hang on LOL That was the 4.32 pass and at that point we still had quarter mile gears in the car! Kon has been my tuner, mentor and friend since 2014 so watch this space now we have a new convertor and some proper diff gearing! FIERCEST COMPETITOR: That would have to be Perry Bullivant, the man has been by far the most committed racer that I have met, he travels 1000’s of kilometres to race at times and just does not know the meaning of giving up. I think it was 2018 and he had a tail shaft failure that destroyed the gearbox, engine, back hatch, pretty much most of the car and worked all night long with his team to race the next day. I bought this Torana off him as a roller but had met him previous, always up for a beer and a laugh and one of the most focused racers you will meet hands down. FAVOURITE PLACE TO RACE: I’d have to say Sydney, Willowbank is home but the boys down there make you feel so at home, we have a lot of “family” down there. The track and amenities are killer and they normally pull big fields although the crowds have been smaller in recent times. FAVOURITE CLASS TO WATCH: Without doubt, Radial. Being a radial racer, its just so exciting and a real challenge to get these monsters down the track. CAREER HIGHLIGHT: Winning my very first race meet at Willowbank in 2014. FUTURE PLANS: To get the new, mega HP Westend Engine into the car and attempt to take the number one spot in Pro275 from Stu Henry. Stay tuned... 95

BLAST FROM THE PAST 2004 EASTERNATS - SANDOWN RACEWAY, VICTORIA

EASTER r e k c a Cr

John Davison had a long standing relationship with Victoria’s Sundown Raceway, and he decided he wanted to bring a new event to the track - an event like no other. Sure, we’d already had the Street Machine Nationals and the Summernats along with a few others, but none had gone as far as letting the entrants cruise a race track in the street cars and basically let them explore their limits. Some certainly took up the challenge and did well. Others not so.

Long before we had the Supernats and Powercruise, we had the Easterners - the first event that unleashed hundreds of high-powered street cars onto a purpose-built racing surface. What could possibly go wrong?

96

There’s no denying the Easternats was a driver’s event. Sure, there is a show and shine, but it’s more about what’s happening on the track...

97

2004 was my second visit to Sundown Raceway after attending the event in 2003 just after launching Extreme Magazine. My eyes were certainly opened at the first event and I was hooked. Twelve months later and with a few tough Wollongong cars in tow, we landed at the track to set up our trade stand and found quite a few cars already lapping the track. With a thick cloud of tyre smoke already hovering over venue, this Easter was going to be a blur of high-powered cars, lots of sent tyres, thousands of power hungry punters and some very spirited driving. That just about sums up the Easternats right there.

There’s no denying the Easternats was a driver’s event. Sure, there is a show and shine, but it’s more about what’s happening on the track – much in the same vein as the Powercruise today! Sandown Raceway is unique, with every part of the track visible from the massive grandstand situated on the main straight. From there, you could see, hear and smell every car doing their best to destroy a set of tyres.

With a thick cloud of tyre smoke already hovering over venue, this Easter was going to be a blur of high-powered cars and lots of spent tyres...

It’s been quite some time since the Easternats was part of the custom car calendar. It did have a brief stint at Winton Raceway, but it just couldn’t replicate the feel and atmosphere the event created at Sandown Raceway. At least those days are well documented in magazines and on the internet for years to come…

The purists may not like it, but with plenty of power coming from the turbo 13B Rotary transplanted into this tubbed Datto 1600, Brad McFarlane couldn’t care less!

BRAD MCFARLANE - DATSUN 1600 WORDS / PICS / VIDEO - PAUL BECK 104

105

This isn’t the first foray into the world of tough street cars for 36-year old builder, Brad. There’s been another rotary powered 1600 Datto in the garage previously that was bright pink and wore DSTRBU number plates. There was also a series 8 Mazda RX7 prior to Brad getting his hands on this white hot 1600. This particular Datsun had already gained a huge reputation in the small car scene when it was owned by the Hay brothers in Canberra. The brothers had run a best of 7.98-seconds on the quarter mile in the tubbed Datsun gaining plenty of attention, particularly from Brad. When the Datsun was returned to street trim, it was parked in the garage where it sat collecting dust. For two years, an anxious Brad pestered the brothers about selling the Datsun to him when finally, in 2018, they decided enough was enough and did the deal.

Giving the 13B the real big kick in the pants is a custom GTX45 turbo charger, kitted out with Gen-2 Precision wheels for the ultimate in boosted performance. 106

107

At this stage, the 1600 had already had the tubbed rear end and associated chassis mod’s completed by Craig Burns and the team at SCF Race Cars, and the move to rotary power had also been done. Whilst the engine had produced plenty of power before, it didn’t last very long for Brad, kick starting a two year rebuild. Brad looked no further than Tony Marr at Rotor Torque for a fresh engine. With a big reputation to live up to, Brad had the boys at Rotor Torque screw together one hell of a tough 13B, starting with full billet boss plates with custom, semi pp ports. With the basis for the wild engine sorted, Tony added the factory 13B intake manifold that uses a modified Cosmo throttle

body, and 2400cc Siemens injectors, all controlled by Haltech. Giving the 13B the real big kick in the pants is a custom GTX45 turbo charger, kitted out with Gen-2 Precision wheels for the ultimate in boosted performance. A full four-inch exhaust system with a custom twinscroll manifold, twin 40mm Turbo Smart waste gates, 4-inch stainless dump pipe, twin screamers and PEC muffler, provide an escape route for the spent gases after the MSD ignition systems fires the engine into life. A pair of big Bosch fuel pumps get the E85 octane fuel flowing from the boot mounted fuel cell through the engine at a rapid rate. And on this good fuel, the engine is good for more than 800hp!

And on this good fuel, the engine is good for more than 800hp!

Backing the powerplant is a C4 Ford auto box that has been built by Al’s Race Glides using the best billet internals to deal with the power being fed through it. A TCE 6000rpm converter sits inside the custom adapter and ensures that when Brad front’s up at the ‘tree’ and that green globe glows, the Datsun is going to launch with both front wheels in the air. And for the little time he’ll have to change gears during the run, he will be doing that with a B&M Pro-Stick shifter. The rest of the driveline is typical SCF Race Cars-spec. The very narrow nineinch diff houses 3.9-gears and 40-spline Mark Williams axles and is suspended with a pair of Strange coil-over shocks and rose-jointed four-link. Disc brakes are hidden behind the 15x10-inch Weld wheels and 275/60 tyres that are jammed up under the fabricated tubs. Up front, the Datto scored VT BT1 Commodore disc brakes and calipers, coil-over shocks and 15x3.5-inch Weld Magnum rims wrapped in 165/65 tyres for that typical pro-street look. 108

109

Inside, the Datsun’s small internal space wreaks of performance street car. There’s a mass of roll cage surrounding the interior – the bulk of which taking up the space where rear passengers once sat when going to get the weekly groceries. That seat is long gone though, with the wheel tubs dominating the view. The rear space of the interior is now covered in carbon-fibre style leather by X-Trim. A pair of retrimmed Recaro buckets replace the Datsun’s shapeless factory seats, offering a much comfier ride for Brad. From the driver’s seat, the carbon fibre dash, with its row of angled AutoMeter gauges, vital switches for pumps etc and Haltech IC7 screen come into full view, sitting just behind the MOMO steering wheel. The custom door trims feature the familiar Rotary logo embossed into each.

Brad has two simple goals in mind – racing and plenty of street use!

When Brad bought the Datsun, the body was rust free and in mint condition. The only modification made to the body was the shaving of the inner front guards and the obvious rear wheel tubs. Apart from that, the body is stock, now covered in Coke white, laid on by Custom Body Works. With the refurbished chrome work and black wheels, the exterior of the Datsun now has the looks to match the performance that hidden underneath. 110

111

At the time of doing the shoot, Brad was still in ‘run-in’ mode with the engine, but was getting anxious to reacquaint the Datsun to the Sydney Dragway racing surface when the green light is given to hit the track in anger. And when he does, Brad is hoping to run consistent low 8-second ET’s. It’s taken two-years and a considerable amount of the folding stuff to get the Datto to this stage, so what’s the plan from here? Brad has two simple goals in mind – racing and plenty of street use! Sounds like a great plan to me…
